We speak to Mr Matthew Hagger, Group Managing Principal, about what you can expect from a visit to these popular local schools
With two open days every year, in March and October, potential parents have plenty of opportunities to step through the doors of Braeside in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall in Epping, Normanhurst in North Chingford and Oaklands in Loughton to see the schools in action.
“As soon as you step foot into the Early Years departments of the Oak-Tree Group, you will be able to see for yourself the diverse range of activities on offer each day. The children have excellent relationships with staff and often exceed their expected levels of progress.
All four schools have a generous provision for the Early Years, with spacious classrooms and dedicated outside learning areas. As we are schools and not standalone nurseries, we aim to provide more structured learning environments in which children are encouraged to learn through play. Our specialist subject teachers enrich the children’s learning experiences with activities such as sport, music, dance or computing.
Starting in our Kindergartens ensures that parents can secure a place for their child in Reception, saving them from having to go for further assessments at age 4.
The enthusiasm for learning and the excellent relationship with teachers continues into the Infants and Juniors. Smaller class sizes allow for a more personalised education.
Enter a Junior classroom and you may find pupils learning the fundamentals of coding using sets of iPads, taking part in an African Drumming workshop or studiously working together to solve tricky Maths problems. As well as a strong focus on academic subjects, pupils from Year 1 to 6 have a creative and rich curriculum, with specialist teachers in areas such as Languages, Music, Computing and PE/Games.
There are two established senior departments in the Oak-Tree Group, at Braeside and Normanhurst Schools, and there will soon be a third as Coopersale Hall will welcome its first cohort of Year 7 pupils in September. Our Seniors are bustling hubs of activity, offering a wide range of subjects within a varied and
challenging curriculum. The schools benefit from specialist teachers and specialist facilities, including Science labs, ICT suites, Art/Design Technology studios, PE/Games areas and Music studios, which you will be able to see on a tour. The schools also boast excellent success rates at GCSE.
Life as an Oak-Tree Senior is busy, but our pupils wouldn’t have it any other way. When they are not sitting in lessons, they are off on trips or taking part in extra-curricular activities.
Several part-scholarships are awarded annually for pupils entering Year 7 in areas such as Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sport.”
What can potential parents expect from their visit?
Mr Matthew Hagger continues, “We all want the best for our children and an Oak-Tree education offers a rich, yet affordable experience with a personalised approach to education. The best way to experience this for yourself is to visit the schools and see them in action. Our Open Days include tours led by our pupils, an informative speech from the Head and plenty of opportunities for questions to be answered.
Our next Open Days are in March 2023, and you can book a place at your leisure on our websites.

Argentinian culture is recognised by its passion, tango, football, Malbec wine and maybe really good horses too but, there is one more lush and indulgent secret that you might have missed and is accessible to you here in the UK, handcrafted by Argentinian Head Chocolatier Maria Romero at Sur Chocolates.
Alfajores are a traditional confection that Argentinian people grow up with and anyone will make a pause and enjoy with coffee, as dessert, or just because they are a craving for a happy moment for themselves. Maria has transformed this mass produced kiosk treat, consumed by approximately 2 billions every year, in a modern chocolate gem.
The Alfajor [alfaˈ xo ˈ], (plural alfajores) is typically made with two biscakes with an indulgent filling coated with chocolate. The most popular filling in Argentina is Dulce de Leche (the national “milk caramel”) but Sur Chocolates has also introduced new flavours like Yerba Mate, Malbec, Red Berries, Cortado just to mention a few.
Maria uses her 20 years of experience in the field to play around techniques and quality ingredients creating the Alfajor of today. Growing up the tasting experience amplifies: “We have more palate experience and just a machinemade Alfajor would not do. People are far more aware of real handcrafted products, instead of a mass produced chocolate made by machines and operated by people pressing buttons. I wanted to create a business that will bring back craft and
value to our world sharing my identity too”. But, how do you know this is for real? You can visit their workshop and see it with your own eyes. As you come in you will listen to Argentinian Music, smell the freshly baked biscakes and see Maria work with Latin American origin chocolate and ingredients.
They offer on-site tasting experiences and an immersive hands-on Alfajores Class. Although Maria shares her passion bringing this experiences to other workplaces and pop-ups to help spread the word about Argentinian Ingredients and real handcraft, not just for show.
Roots and Inspiration
“I go back to the South as I you go back always to love” is the lyric of the tango Vuelvo al Sur that inspired Chocolatier Maria Romero and Creative Director Emanuel Ferrandez when developing SUR Chocolates. They hope to inspire people to be authentic and connect with their roots. To trust that every part of your upbringing has left a unique fingerprint that makes you who you are.
“Making the best Alfajores is the way of expressing ourselves. In a world were you are surrounded by similar products, all looking and tasting the same, we believe in being different because we have a story to tell, not just something to sell. We should all be proud of what makes us different and be brave to share it with the world”

Westminster Security is a private security company headquartered in its namesake - Westminster, central London. They were established at the turn of the millennium after recognising a niche and under-catered sector within the private security industry. That was high-end security services for UHNW individuals, private households, company owners, and executives alike.
The private security sector was awash with ‘security companies’ providing basic and lowstandard security guarding services, many being rogue and unlicensed companies run by criminals and protection rackets. Thankfully, those days are long behind us now due in part to the regulation of the Industry by the Home Office and the creation of the Security Industry Authority (SIA).
These days, you will likely find more security companies trying to crack the lucrative ‘highend’ market with their service offerings, yet one name remains consistent at the pinnacle of their
trade and the chosen provider to many securityconscious individuals, families, and businesses.
Having built an excellent reputation and enviable brand image through their high standards, exceptional attention to detail, and excellence. Westminster Security has established itself as the industry leader and the ‘go-to’ company for ‘luxury’ high-end security services.
Their services are based around their core service of close protection, what is that? We hear you say. Well, essentially, its bodyguards, but not as you might envisage them. When we think of bodyguards, we all naturally think of Hulk-like burly men or gun-toting Hollywood hearth-throbs. But the reality is very different.
John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd said “Close protection operatives (bodyguards) come in all shapes and sizes, non are armed in the UK, and female bodyguards are ever more popular with our clients”. John is a veteran of the British Army where he served in the Royal Military Police and specialised in close protection within the Close Protection Unit. So, we believe him.
Other services they provide in support of their close protection operations include highly trained security chauffeurs, residential security guards, surveillance, and VIP event security.

Olympia is steeped in motoring history having hosting blue-riband automotive shows for more than a century. The spectacular Grand Hall was home to the International Motor Exhibition from 1905 to 1936 and has accommodated a host of similarly distinguished car-themed events ever since… most recently The London Classic Car
Show in 2020.
With restrictions on indoor venues, the show was forced to innovate with an inspired move to a temporary new outdoor venue in Syon Park in June 2021… but now returns to its traditional February fixture under Olympia’s magnificent, Victorian, barrel-vaulted roof.
“We are thrilled to be bringing The London Classic Car Show back to Olympia,” confirmed Kate Woodley, Show Director at organiser Brand Events. “It’s a truly spectacular venue which provides us with the perfect backdrop for wonderful displays of iconic cars from throughout the ages.

The former will feature an eye-catching collection of evolving 911s from the original aircooled Type 901 launched at the Frankfurt Show in 1963 right up to the latest Type 992 supercars.
The latter will provide a fascinating insight into the uncovering and restoration of recently discovered relics as well as offering visitors a trip down memory lane with a line-up of oncemainstream models that are now becoming muchmissed rarities.
A special display featuring three of the bespoke Mini Coopers presented to the Beatles in 1965 will be another major attraction. Sadly the car given to John Lennon hasn’t survived the test of time, but the Minis of Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are being reunited for the first time in more than 50 years.
As ever, The London Classic Car Show will boast hundreds of the world’s finest cars from yesteryear as well as celebrity interviews on the main stage plus a host of other dazzling highlights. Two special displays have already been confirmed for February – the first will honour 60 years of
There will also be an auction organised by Historics with 100 highly sought-after classics going under the hammer giving both visitors and those online a great chance to join the classic car movement.
Offering exceptional value, adult admission in advance is priced at just £25. Full details of all ticket buying options – as well as the latest show news – can be found on the official theclassiccarshowuk.com website.
The London Classic Car Show was launched in 2014 at ExCel London and is now firmly established as the capital city’s premier showcase for discerning classic car owners, collectors, experts and enthusiasts. The annual event has quickly become an international celebration of the finest classic road and race cars across the UK and Europe, bringing together the very best dealers, manufacturers, restorers and car clubs.
For 2020 the Show moved to a new home at Olympia, a more central venue boasting significant automotive history… and then, to provide a Covid-compliant setting, The London Classic Car Show 2021 relocated to a new outdoor setting at historic Syon Park, in West London.
The 2023 Show will take place between 24-26 February and advance tickets start from £25 per adult, £20 per child (6-16). Entry for children under the age of six years is free. Premium tickets are available for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, starting at £65 per adult, which include fast track entry and show guide. For more information visit: theclassiccarshowuk.com

From bright colours to racy cutouts, these are the workout clothes we’ll be sporting this year. By
Maybe it’s going to that dance class you’ve been eyeing up, or finally figuring out what the fuss around Pilates is all about. If you do want to try something new – or just want that extra motivation to get to the gym – a fresh set of workout clothes will be just the thing you need.
Few things will actually motivate you to exercise more than the perfect gear – and that’s where disco-inspired workout clothes come in. Think shiny leggings, tops and sports bras laced with gold and silver – anything to bring a bit of that party spirit to the gym. Plus, chuck a trench coat or more formal jacket over the top, and you can definitely get away with these looks when not working out too.
The period-proof underwear market is massive, with research from Mintel, published in March 2022, discovering around one-fifth of British women (19%) had bought period pants in the previous year. It was only a matter of time before that market started expanding, and the next logical step seems to be into the world of fitness. As we’re wising up to how women’s bodies change over the course of the month – and adapting our fitness regimes accordingly – there’s a growing trend for period-proof activewear. Period underwear company Modibodi recently teamed up with Puma
Taking its cue from style stars like Kim Kardashian, in recent years athleisure has become somewhat muted in colour. We’re talking beiges, stones, creams, greys – chic, but not a whole lot of fun. However, that looks to be changing, and in 2023 we predict to see a lot more colour in fitness wear. Think animal print leggings and bright tops – anything to inject a bit of life into your workout and help you boost your mood with dopamine dressing.
Cutouts are a huge trend in fashion right now, making its way from the runways to the high street. Now, fitness style is having a go with artful slashes on bralettes and gym tops. It doesn’t really matter what your cutouts are – they can range from subtle keyhole designs to racy flashes of skin – it’s just about bringing a bit of glamour to your workout.
It’s the age-old question: what should you put on top of your workout gear after hitting the gym? Particularly if you can’t be bothered to change, a fleece could be your best option. Keep things simple and chic in neutral-toned fleeces – they’ll go especially well with any brightly coloured or patterned gym kit you might be wearing.

Hair experts reveal the dos and don’ts of becoming a redhead.
Models and actors have been going crazy for copper, making it the biggest celebrity hair trend since everyone went for ‘pandemic pink’ during the first lockdown.
Gigi Hadid was an early adopter, unveiling deep auburn locks at the Met Gala in 2021, and her pal Kendall Jenner was more recently spotted on the Prada catwalk with a sleek, copper-toned updo.
Barbie Ferreira, star of hit drama series Euphoria, debuted a Ginger Spice-esque shade on Instagram earlier this year, and Phoebe Dynevor – normally
known for her blonde locks in Bridgerton – has been rocking a rich, glossy copper look.
“I love the copper hair trend,” says Natalia Vera, designer stylist at Live True London (livetruelondon.com). “Copper hues haven’t had much love for a while, so the recent rise in popularity is long overdue.”
Michael Shaun Corby, global creative director at Living Proof (livingproof.com), is also a big fan: “After years of conservative, made-to-last hair, bolder colours are back.” He suggests coppery reds are “a way to ‘peacock’, and say we’re ready to get out there”.
Fancy a red-hot hair transformation? Here’s everything you need to know before taking the plunge…
How easy is it to get copper hair?
“With lighter coloured hair, the process is easy and can be achieved with a gloss, toner or semipermanent dye that will wash out after about 10 shampoos,” says Belle Cannan, co-founder of Salon Sloane (salonsloane.com). “Darker hair is trickier, as you may have to pre-lighten the hair to get the most natural-looking finish.”
Vera says going from blonde to copper in the salon can be achieved in one session – but you might need to have a few more if you’re transitioning from “very dark or box dyed hair”.
Models and actors have been going crazy for copper, making it the biggest celebrity hair trend since everyone went for ‘pandemic pink’ during the first lockdown.
Corby recommends getting it done professionally, “Especially if you need to lift your base/natural colour before dyeing it copper, as you can end up with unwanted brassier tones”.
How can you find your perfect copper shade?
Looking at your eye colour and the undertones of your skin can help you decide whether to go for a deep cherry red or a more golden shade.
“Copper is very versatile,” says Corby. “It draws out the warmth of brown eyes, and it can also make blue eyes pop – as it is on the opposite side of the colour wheel.” As for skin tones, he says: “If you have greyer undertones, it doesn’t work as well, but for cool and warmer skin tones – go for it!”
Vera adds: “I recommend having a consultation with your stylist first, to make sure you find the right shade for you. There’s a whole range of copper tones, from fiery warm shades with yellow undertones, to more natural deep red colours with blue undertones.”
How easy is it to maintain the colour?
It’s important to consider upkeep before making a major colour change.
“If you wash your hair daily, this colour isn’t for you,” Corby says – particularly as red colour molecules are quite small, so can leave the hair quickly.
Vera recommends using “copper hair masks weekly, and keeping on top of your toner appointments at the salon to keep your colour looking fabulous. You
should also aim to reduce how often you shampoo your hair, and invest in colour protecting shampoos and conditioners to help the vibrancy of your colour last longer.”
Lily James is starring in a new beauty campaign inspired by old Hollywood glamour.
James, 33, is putting the spotlight on Charlotte Tilbury’s latest release – the nextgeneration Hollywood Glow Glide Face Architect Highlighter.
She models the product alongside Jourdan Dunn, Lihi Menahem, Hadassah McGrew, Aimee Cheng-Bradshaw and Bella Tilbury – Charlotte Tilbury’s niece.
James first showed off the product on the red carpet for the 2022 Fashion Awards – in a fairytale-inspired Rodarte outfit – and is likely to be a familiar face this awards season, as she’s nominated for the Best Actress award for her role in Pam & Tommy at the Golden Globes.
“As we head into the awards season, I’m absolutely thrilled to reveal Golden Globe, Emmy nominated, and beauty muse ICON Lily James will star in my latest campaign for Hollywood Glow Glide Face Architect Highlighter,” says Tilbury.
“Like me, she gets the power of glow and is obsessed with the glow glide texture of my new highlighter innovation which she uses for all her red carpet looks! We had so much fun shooting this campaign together, the lights, the cameras, the dresses, the glamour – it was the most magical time!”
James wears an ivory silk gown in the shots with diamond earrings and loose waves in her hair.
“Charlotte Tilbury is the Queen of Glow and I love her new Hollywood Glow Glide Face Architect Highlighter,” James says.
“It has this incredible sculpting effect on my cheekbones and jawline, and the glow glide texture behaves differently to anything I’ve experienced before – it does exactly what it says – smoothing out my pores, putting everything into soft focus and playing with the light to make me look illuminated and lifted from every angle. I know great lighting can transform your face and Charlotte has captured and bottled those light tricks in Hollywood Glow Glide Face Architect Highlighter. It is my go to glow trick!”

Industry insiders share their favourite all-rounders with Katie Wright.
It’s easy for our bathroom cabinets and make-up bags to become overloaded with bottles, tubes, pots and palettes that sit there for months (or sometimes years) gathering dust.
Not only do they take up valuable space, these rarely-used products are more likely to go to waste – and with prices on the rise in so many consumer categories at the moment, replacing them might cost you an arm and a leg.
By choosing multi-purpose beauty essentials you’ll get more bang for your buck, use every last drop of product and streamline your cosmetics collection.
Here are seven of the best skincare, hair and make-up multitaskers – according to experts…
A true cult classic, Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream has been flying off the shelves since 1930, beloved by celebs, make-up artists and skincare junkies alike.
“It’s no surprise this product is so iconic, you truly can use it from head to toe,” says Boots
(boots.com) beauty trainer Hannah Stern.
“You can use it to moisturise and repair dry skin and chapped lips, but it can also be used to tame hair and eyebrows or hydrate nails and cuticles.”
A best-seller from 3INA (pronounced ‘mee-nah’), which has recently launched at Superdrug, The No-Rules Stick is infused with moisturising hyaluronic acid. “It’s make-up that meets skincare,” says Jasmine de Souza, education manager at 3INA (3ina.com), who shares her top three ways to wear it.
“Dot or swipe the stick on the cheeks, use the warmth of your fingertips to blend and melt the product seamlessly into the skin,” she says.
“As a lipstick – these creamy formulas can be intensified with a few swipes across the lips for a stained lip effect; or as eyeshadow – take your ring finger to the stick and tap onto the eyelids to blend and layer the colour exactly where you want it.”
From Swiss beauty pioneers Weleda, this little round pot will help you combat the effects of the winter chill.
“It provides super weather protection for cheeks, while also giving them a highlighted glow,” says Elizabeth King, holistic facialist and skincare expert at Weleda (weleda.co.uk).
“Thanks to the regenerative power of organic calendula, this balm conditions and restores cuticles, brings relief to sore and dry knuckles, and instantly soothes sore red noses when suffering with a cold.”
Plus, it doubles as a make-up and hair perfector: “Use as a gloss for lips or eyes, or for taming unruly brows and flyaway hairs.”
Johnson’s Baby Shampoo
Eco Refill Pack, £2.83 (was £4.25), Boots
YouTube beauty guru and journalist Nadine Baggott (nadinebaggott.com) is a big fan of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, which you can use for much more than just infant hair washing.
“The formula works like magic to remove all that product build-up found in your make-up brushes, and doubles up as a shaving cream thanks to the silky formula that glides over your skin, leaving the ‘slip’ you need for a smooth shave,” Baggott says.
Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks, £20.80 (was £26), Boots Monochrome make-up – meaning the same shade on eyes, lips and cheeks – is a great way to save time and create a chic, pulledtogether look.
“I use Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge to add a soft, stained look to my lips and a subtle blush to the apple of my cheeks and the bridge of my nose,” says Stern.
“Lipsticks, glosses and even tinted balms can all be used as a blush alternative. The key is to choose a shade that is close to your actual lip colour, as this will give you a more natural flush.”
Available in seven shimmery shades, these bargain pigments from make-up brand 17 will add a bit of glam to your look.
“These versatile little pots offer endless possibilities,” Stern says.
“Mix and match to create your own unique shade of eyeshadow, add to a clear lip gloss for a pop of colour, dust over your collarbones or cheekbones for a subtle shimmer, or apply to your nails with a clear top coat for a doughnut-glazed finish.”
A fan favourite from cult American brand ILIA – which recently landed on this side of the pond at Sephora – this cream crayon is available in 10 shades, from pale pink to ruby red. “[The] Multi-Stick is perfect for creating a seamless, uniform look, as it can be used on your cheek or lips,” says Katie Yarbrough, product expert at ILIA (iliabeauty.com).
“Its creamy, lightweight formula also makes it easy to mix, match or layer it with other shades for a customised look. Simply swipe and blend for that naturally fresh, all-over glow.”
There are some furniture designs that seem to belong to both the past and the future, that wouldn’t look out of place in the home of your grandparent or grandchild, that give no clue to when they were designed by the way they look –are they a recent Barber and Osgerby triumph, or a classic Gio Ponti number?
Really, it’s thanks to the Modernist movement which began its climb to dominance in the early 1900s, properly getting going post World War II when contemporary designers turned their backs on the ornate classical furniture of their forbears, instead looking to tone things down and shake things up. As Le Corbusier put it; ‘A great epoch has begun. There exists a new spirit.’
Out went Art Deco, Neoclassical and Victorian styles – no more dark carved woods, gilded carpentry or rich patterns – and in came the shiny and new. Pared-back forms, a focus on function over style and visual lightness, all gloriously massproduced with gleaming new technologies, were
“Designed between 1927-31 for Louis Poulsen, when the first prototype of the PH Septima light was presented at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art, the crowd broke into spontaneous applause”
finally available and affordable(ish) to all.
Design icons rained down. Furniture took on sculptural, minimal forms as hallowed architects began producing smaller objects to fill their projects, and names such as Eames, Wegner, Castiglioni and Breuer were sanctified in the furniture hall of fame.
Jump forward to the present day, and the tubular steel is gleaming just as brightly as it did 70, 80, 90, 100 years ago, and those alluring curves look like they just fell out of the pages of a contemporary design magazine. Traversing the decades is no easy feat, yet several key 20th-century pieces of furniture have made the leap with ease, their utter minimalism protecting them from the ravages of time and blending them in so well with the present-day, it’s hard to tell what new and what’s a revered design icon.
We all know the bonafide classics – the Wishbone chairs, the Tulip tables, the Eames loungers – so let’s discover those (slightly) more under-the-radar pieces that have made it through the years thanks to their brilliantly time-proof aesthetic.
Designed by Hungarian modernist architect Marcel Breuer in 1925, it’s hard to believe the gleaming shapely form of the Wassily lounge chair, now produced by Knoll, is hovering around its hundredth birthday!
Designed between 1927-31 for Louis Poulsen, when the first prototype of the PH Septima light was presented at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art, the crowd broke into spontaneous applause.
With sculptural curves slotting it into modernday sensibilities and the ongoing trend for all things round, the S 533 chair by leading GermanAmerican modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe defies the rules of time.
Poul Kjærholm piece, the seat is also referred to as the Hammock Chair to highlight its function of suspending the body between two points.
Snoopy lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, 1967
A 1960s child in more ways than one, the Snoopy lamp by Italian architect and designer brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni was created in 1967, taking its shape from the loveable illustrative dog from the cartoon strip Peanuts which was at its peak at the time.
La Chaise by Charles & Ray Eames, 1948
The Dali-esque La Chaise by lauded American industrial designers Charles & Ray Eames was inspired by the Floating Figure sculpture by French artist Gaston Lachaise. A conceptual, freeform design on which the user could either recline or sit up straight on, the daybed is an icon of organic design.
CH07 Shell Lounge Chair by Hans J. Wegner, 1963
A new type of shell chair with three legs, no armrests and a deep recline, the CH07 Shell Lounge Chair was created by ‘master of chairs’ Danish architect Hans J. Wegner in 1963, its organically curving seat gaining it the nickname of ‘the smiling chair’.
Haller storage by Fritz Haller, 1965
Purposefully designed to be time-proof, Haller storage was designed by Swiss architect Fritz Haller for Swiss brand USM in 1965 and has had a place in New York’s Museum of Modern Art since 2001.
PK24 chaise lounge by Poul Kjærholm, 1965
Simple, elegant, and minimalist, the PK24 chaise lounge is an iconic

Soriana lounge chair by Afra and Tobia Scarpa, 1969
Created by postmodern Italian architects and designers Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1969, the Soriana lounge chair is a true style icon, changing the face of upholstered furniture and winning the illustrious Compasso d’Oro prize in 1970. chaplins.co.uk
Entering their third year since launch, design duo Niki Wright and Scarlett Hampton have continued to impress with their constant release of innovative and trend leading lighting designs.
Building on their successes, the pair look towards a more natural and grounding design ethos for this Autumn Winter season.
“Hand woven rattan remains an integral part of our range this year” explains Hampton, “the natural finish, warm light and diffused shadows are just things we can’t resist”.
Following their ‘Lagom’: just enough approach, lights&lamps offer a diverse range of elegantly simple products using striking forms in an array of different materials.
“There is already so much natural intricacy in the materials we choose” describes Wright “that we believe the shapes and overall compositions should be kept minimal to let each substrate speak for itself”.
Alongside hand woven rattan and raffia, lights&lamps have created a collection of beautiful pieces using ceramics, polished marbles, ribbed concrete and soft slubbed linens.
Wright and Hampton know their audience and pride themselves on listening to customer feedback and requests. Their ability to create new products and answer demand is market leading and has meant they have already built a loyal following within the UK.
“Our aim is and has always been to offer more
for less” continues Wright, “the design details, the product scale and the materials we use all ensure our customer’s expectations are exceeded every time”.
“We often hear back from our customers to say they thought it might have been too good to be true!” adds Hampton “but we can assure you, our lights and lamps look every bit as good in your home as they do on our website”.

As a young yet highly experienced firm, Blackberry Build is built on a foundation of outstanding artistry, unparalleled design skills and an ongoing commitment to premium quality.
At a very young age I wondered what my purpose in this life was. I worked various jobs, which I would start with excitement, but as soon as I had mastered them, I would start seeking a new challenge. I craved constant learning and growth and wanted to push myself forward. I could not agree more with the quotes – ‘Never tolerate average’ or ‘Impossible is a state of mind’. I started my career in the construction industry 22 years ago, right at the bottom, as a bricklayer’s labourer and worked my way up. Within five years, I was put in charge of a small crew. The following 12 years took a lot of hard work, courage and effort and were very challenging but successful. From a site supervisor, I became a project director picking up a BA (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering, NVQ Level 7 in Construction Management, Membership of a Chartered Institute of Building and other qualifications.
My main and most enjoyable projects were marketing suites and show apartments for such industry giants as St George and Berkeley Homes.
As these projects were the developer’s flagships and showpieces for the quality of design and workmanship, they had to be completed to an immaculate level, and that is what I enjoyed most! After doing this for almost seven years, I had a huge hunger for a new challenge. I had tons of experience, knowledge, determination, and a massive will to create something unique. This is where Blackberry Build was born. It went through the stages and evolved into a unique project delivery company like no other. Now I’m glad to say that I’m thrilled with what I do as my ‘work’. It’s crazy; I like it so much I don’t even call it a ‘job’. I just enjoy it too much.”

Indoor swimming pools are a luxurious and stylish addition to any home, offering a whole new place in your home or garden to relax, have fun and maximise your time.
The latest trends in indoor swimming pools are all about creating a unique and personalised space that reflects your style and preferences. Origin has been building award-winning swimming pools for over 40 years and know that no two projects are the same, every swimming pool designed and built is unique to the client. A lot of trends come and go over the years but there are always some that never seem to go out of style and the trends for 2023 are no exception. These trends can provide enough scope to help create beautiful and functional spaces and with so many to choose from, now is the perfect time to consider enhancing or adding an indoor swimming pool to your home.
Water features can add visual interest, help create a relaxing ambience, and provide therapeutic benefits. Even from a purely aesthetic point of view, water features are a simple yet guaranteed way to add style and individuality to any swimming pool. Water features can come in many shapes and forms; waterfalls, fountains, massage jets or spas and can be customised to fit any taste and budget. They can easily be controlled by a variety of methods and with the help of Origin’s experts, you can create an environment that provides a unique and personalised swimming experience, which is not only beautiful but functional too.
This is an increasingly popular trend in home swimming pool design. These pools are designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding outdoor environment, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of an indoor pool while still feeling connected to the outdoors. ‘Best of both worlds’ pools typically feature large windows or bi-folding doors that can be opened to their full extent, letting natural light and fresh air flood the pool house. This simple design allows you to bring the outside in and swim in the comfort of your own home while still enjoying the natural beauty of your surroundings.
Swim jets are a great way to maximise the functionality of an indoor swimming pool, particularly in smaller spaces. They can be installed in the pool and their powerful jets of water create a current for you to swim against, allowing for a
more intense workout and providing an innovative way to swim ‘virtual laps’ in a smaller space. The strength of the swim jets can also generate a massaging effect, adding to the relaxing sensation of being in the water, releasing endorphins and combating stress.
When it comes to indoor swimming pool design, muted colour palettes are taking over. The neutral or subdued shades help create a serene and peaceful atmosphere, making the pool area a relaxing and inviting space. The minimalistic, ‘scandi’ design choice is great for indoor swimming pools as it can be easily paired with contemporary or traditional style, and create a sophisticated and elegant look. Creating a cohesive design in any space can be tough, however, muted colours can be the perfect backdrop for a pool house, allowing the pool itself to be the focal point.
Do you have a favourite holiday destination? If neutral shades aren’t your style, perhaps you’d prefer to incorporate some exotic and holidayinspired elements into your indoor swimming pool design. Elements such as mosaics, lush greenery and natural stone can be used to create a fun and inviting atmosphere taking inspiration from all over the globe. Design components like lighting and water features can also showcase your exotic inspiration and lend themselves to the overall feel of your swimming pool design. Looking abroad for your design influence is a great way to create a unique and personalised swimming experience for the whole family and ensure you never have the holiday blues again.

It’s no surprise plants can cheer us up in the winter months.
New research by Dobbies Garden Centres (dobbies.com) has backed this up, finding 40% of those surveyed believe colourful houseplants make them feel happier.
But they don’t just lift your mood. The NASA Clean Air study found that many houseplants can clean the air of toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, xylene and ammonia, says podcaster and garden expert Ellen Mary, who recently launched People Plants Wellbeing (peopleplantswellbeing.com), a new nature-based wellbeing consultancy.
“The more plants the merrier, as long as you have the time and space to care for them,” says Mary. “To clean the air you can have fewer plants if they have larger foliage, as they can be more efficient at reducing toxins.”
She continues: “Studies into the wellbeing benefits of houseplant ownership showed that even just being in the presence of indoor plants can improve wellbeing, so not just softening aesthetics but also feeling a connection to the natural world. For those working in rooms with plants, they performed better on cognitive tasks and lower levels of physiological stress.”
According to the RHS, studies indicate that indoor plants can lead to increased worker productivity and increased pain tolerance, for example, where plants were used in hospital settings.
“The spathiphyllum, or peace lily, is a great choice for beginner and seasoned plant parents alike, and will thrive in a bright spot out of direct sunlight. This striking plant should be watered weekly, or when its soil feels dry to the touch,” says Claire Bishop, head of houseplants at Dobbies Garden Centres (dobbies.com).
“If your plant isn’t flowering, water it, feed it and move it to a brighter spot for a beautiful addition to your home that will not only brighten up your interiors but also your mood.”
Mary recommends pothos, an easy-to-grow bushy specimen which thrives on low light and neglect, and purifies the air of toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide. It also helps to eliminate odours and is said to relieve tired screen eyes, she notes.
Hedera helix (English ivy) is also a good air purifier – it grows in partial shade and is a low-care plant, and its long vines make it great for shelves and mantelpieces.
“If you’re looking to give your home a boost of greenery without spending a fortune, smaller plants and ferns are a fantastic option. Adiantum

(maidenhair fern), nephrolepis (sword fern) and phlebodium fern varieties are all typically low cost and will elevate any room in your home,” Bishop suggests.
“The Dypsis lutescens is another wonderful choice and comes in a variety of sizes, making it ideal for homes of all styles and will instantly improve any space.”
Bishop calls houseplants “great additions to your home office, to perk up your working environment and make you more productive.
“If caring for houseplants isn’t your forte but you still want to feel the benefits of them, consider a sansevieria (snake plant). These quirky plants can go without water for up to a month so require very little attention, making them perfect for those just starting their plant journey.”
“To promote wellness in your bathroom and give this space a zen look and feel, use houseplants to create a spa-like vibe,” says Bishop. “Ferns, with their air purifying qualities, thrive in a humid environment, making them ideal for your bathroom.
“Plant your ferns in soil with good drainage and keep them moist with weekly mistings. If your fern is looking dehydrated, you can plunge it into a sink or bucket of water to bring it back to life. Simply submerge your pot into the water and then remove it, letting it drain completely before placing it back into a bright spot.”
Mary recommends orchids for the bedroom, which hold symbolism of positive energy prosperity and growth and can improve sleep, promote relaxation and enhance feelings of calmness and peace, she says. They also don’t need much watering and can flower for long periods and reflower after resting. Another good choice for the bedroom is sansevieria, which thrives in low light, photosynthesizes even at night and is easy to grow, she recommends.
The money plant (Crassula ovata/Jade plant) exudes positive energy, says Mary, and is thought to bring good luck, growth, prosperity and wealth, while also releasing a lot of oxygen.

Viva Magenta is all about jewel tone accents and inventiveness, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
The Pantone Colour Institute experts have chosen ‘an unconventional shade for an unconventional time’ for 2023’s Colour of the Year – and Viva Magenta is certainly far from muted.
In fact, ‘brave, fearless, powerful and empowering’ is how this nuanced crimson-blended shade is described – ‘an animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and selfexpression without restraint’.
According to the Pantone pros, this ‘electrifying’ and ‘boundless’ shade manifests as a ‘stand-out statement’ – and we’ve no doubt it’ll do the same for your interiors.
“Vibrant and energising, Viva Magenta is the perfect accent colour to liven up a room,” says Chelsea Clark, head of brand at Lust Home.
“If you’re looking to make a statement, pair
the warm red hue with neutral or complementary colours that have the same undertone – and add some contrasting accessories for an extra touch.”
As Clark points out, the thought of using a bright or vibrant shade when decorating can be quite daunting at first, especially if it’s a break from the norm for you. After all, big aspirations call for confidence – but you can skip the expected curtains and scatter cushions pairing (depending on your budget) by switching up your wall treatments.
“Wallpaper is a great starting point when looking to dip your toes into the world of bright interiors,” says Clark. “Add a pop of Viva Magenta to your walls in the form of a patterned wallpaper and embrace the bold trend.”
Elsewhere, colourful paint effects can help you
pull off a major wall statement and take your blank canvas to the next level.
“Vixen is Graham & Brown’s take on Viva Magenta,” says James Greenwood, interior expert at Graham & Brown. A bold pink perfect for those who love playful colour, he acknowledges this vibrant hue can often seem quite overwhelming when introducing it to the home – but you don’t have to go all in at once.
As Greenwood says: “For a more easily translatable look into an interior scheme, colour blocking is a great way to incorporate a hot pink into your interior without being overpowering.”
Think about pairing with cooler pink and purple shades, underpinned by a warm neutral like a putty beige, he suggests, which keeps the brighter pops of colour grounded.
Emma Bestley, co-founder of YesColours, agrees – especially if you’re feeling more timid than fearless: “Viva Magenta is a classic hot pink and in colour terms, a pinkish, purplish red. This exact colour may be too intense for your walls, but we don’t have to take Pantone’s colour of the year so literally,” she says.
Indeed, Pantone cite Viva Magenta as ‘a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family –and expressive of a new signal of strength’. How you choose to channel this in your own home is open to interpretation.
Bestley suggests looking at varying tones of pink-purple to suit your needs: “It will still maintain that fearless assertiveness.”
Play around with different depths of saturation and tones to see what works for your space. With a deep pinky-mauve sophistication, Bestley says these shades can wrap you in warmth and comfort,
like cashmere.
“Some may see it as lusty, but we just see it as loving and kind,” she adds.
Another way to get the look is by focusing on upholstery and soft furnishings and having some fun with fabrics.
“Be brave with a rich magenta sofa and matching feature wall, guaranteed to create a statement in your living room,” suggests Francesca Hadland from Bridgman.
“Echo the colour around the space with your accessories, from your throw cushions to your rug,” she adds.
“And, don’t forget to look to house plants and foliage to offset this bold colour palette with complimentary greens, bringing the bold shades of nature into your home.”
Best of all – with Pantone describing Viva Magenta as a ‘pulsating red shade whose exuberance promotes optimism and joy’ – think of all the spectacular ways you can work this joyous shade into your scheme when spring flowers start to bloom.
With peony flowered tulips turning heads, this red-pink hue will be cropping up everywhere.

Five of the best white plants to illuminate your green space. By Hannah Stephenson.
If your garden looks like it’s down in the dumps with the incessant rain and short days, white plants can do a lot to perk it up. From pint-sized snowdrops which can easily be naturalised, to pot-perfect winterflowering heather and cyclamen, plus white Helleborus niger and the glorious bark of birch, there are numerous options for illuminating your outdoor space.
HERE ARE FIVE OF THE BEST WHITE PLANTS…
As their nodding white heads emerge despite the most inclement of weather, snowdrops are among the first bulbs to appear in late winter and early spring.
How to grow: Plant the bulbs in early autumn around 6-7cm deep. If you want them to naturalise, you’ll need to plant in groups of 10 or more spacing them 4cm apart, leaving enough space for them to spread in seasons to come. You can also buy them in spring ‘in the green’, as lifted clumps which are in full leaf with faded flowers, so you can group clumps together which should naturalise quickly.
If you need an evergreen shrub, which is going to give you subtle white richly-scented flowers every winter against a background of rich, glossy green foliage, this could be the one for you. It grows to 2m and will brighten up a shady border or woodland area, performing well in urban gardens. Once it has flowered, it should also give you glossy black berries, so prolonging interest further on in the season.
How to grow: Sweet box likes partial to deep shade and will grow well in most well-drained humus-rich soil.
If you want your tree to lighten the scene, check out the common silver birch (Betula pendula), with its pure white bark which looks wonderful against the grey of winter. Alternatively, grow paper birch (Betula papyrifera), a fairly vigorous specimen whose peeling white bark is beautiful when the tree is leafless in winter.
How to grow: It’s easy, not fussy about soil, should thrive in sun or light shade and is windtolerant.
These pretty little cyclamen with marbled leaves produce a white flower with a deep purple mark at the base of each petal and look fabulous in quiet dark corners, where they will light up the area if you grow enough of them. They can thrive under trees or in alpine beds and rock gardens, their fresh green foliage emerging around the same time in winter and early spring.
How to grow: Plant 5cm deep in moderately fertile, humus-rich, well drained soil – and don’t overfeed them – preferably in partial shade, mulching them when their leaves die off. They can do well in city gardens and in patio containers, but make sure they are kept moist even when dormant. Being among the hardiest of cyclamen, they should return year after year.
White winter-flowering heather is always a hit in containers – and if you are wanting a flourish of white you could pair it with white violas or pansies and silver-leaved senecios, which will give their best if you place the pot in a sheltered position. It also looks great in rockeries and coastal gardens, on banks and slopes and as garden edging. As well as looking pretty, it is also a magnet for bees. How to grow: Unlike some heathers, this one can tolerate some lime so will grow well in virtually any soil. For best results, place it in full sun in welldrained soil, or in a soil-based compost if you are growing it in a pot. After the heather has flowered, trim it with shears, cutting just below the faded blooms to promote new growth. Don’t cut into old wood or the plant is unlikely to recover.
