Using state of the art screen technology, venues across the world from New Zealand to the Arctic Circle have been filled with images of faraway galaxies, alien worlds, supermassive black holes and the latest theories of the origin of the Universe. 10 MARCH DAMIAN LEWIS ‘Mission Creep’ is a thoughtful collection of rootsy, rock and jazz-tinged songs that reveals a deep love of music, and a deep need to communicate. The album’s origin story begins when Lewis, after leaving school, swapped the rigorous dayto-day regime that had dominated his life for 10 years for something altogether less structured. He took to the road with his guitar and went busking through continental Europe. This experience has stayed with Damian ever since and is reflected in his debut album. COVER STORY

THE GREEN AT EPPING GATE

A Commuter’s Dream Amid The Great Return-To-Office Fairview New Homes is launching the second phase of its Epping Gate development, “The Green at Epping Gate” located in charming Loughton; the perfect solution for many city workers as full-time remote working fades into the past.

T

he surge of remote working in 2020 inspired many to put down new roots in search of better value for money and quality of life away from cities, but with businesses now demanding workers return to the office, at least in part, many will now be searching for the perfect outer city hybrid. According to a study by recruitment agency Hays Plc, 43% of employees worked entirely from the office August – September last year, compared to 36% in 2022. Encompassing a range of spacious and modern one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, twoand three-bedroom duplexes and two- and threebedroom houses, The Green at Epping Gate is the perfect place for young professionals and families to call home.

22 FEBRUARY 2024

With one-bedroom apartments at Epping Gate starting at just £345,000, the development presents a cheaper option to the average flat in similar green belt commuter locations within 35 minutes of Liverpool Street or Bond Street, such as Chigwell* where an apartment costs 5.6% more (£364,406), North Acton 32.7% more (£457,878) and Ealing a staggering 36.6% more (£471,141). The Green is the second phase of Fairview’s Epping Gate development. First-time buyers and London workers Jenny and Emily bought at the first phase in Spring last year and were drawn to the perfect work life balance the development offers. Jenny said: We have lots of dog walking routes and have met lots of lovely people during our walks. We’ve also joined the local gym and frequent

Epping Forest with our little dog Coco. We have an abundance of great local restaurants and coffee shops which we regularly visit. “We knew we liked the location of Loughton with its close proximity to Epping Forest, as well as it being an easy commute to London via the Central Line and close to the motorway. Not only this but the local area itself offers a fantastic high street that’s right on our doorstep - so when we found this property, we were immediately drawn to it.”

Epping Forest is less than 10-minutes’ drive away, offering residents an abundance of tranquil green space; with 5,900 acres of woodland, heaths and ponds, weekends with family, friends and dogs will be well-spent there. Its closest high street, Loughton, a 5-minute drive away – a great spot for a take-away coffee en-route to work or on the school run. As well as independent restaurants and cafés for leisurely brunches with friends, and meals out with the family, including Molens Café & Brasserie, Zest Salad Bar, and Aura Grill and Bar, there are some popular chains too – Zizzi, Nando’s and GAIL’s bakery, to name a few. The Green at Epping Gate is a great location for young families, not only does the development boast safe and secure residents’ podium gardens and play areas for children to enjoy, Loughton and the surrounding area has several sought-after schools. These include ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rated schools and nurseries - Beechoak Farm Montessori Preschool, a 12-minute drive away, and Hereward Primary School, a five-minute drive. For teens, Debden Park High School is a short four-minute drive from the development. For those 16 and over, the modern New City College offers a range of BTEC and vocational courses and is just a stone’s throw from The Green. With the M11 Junction 5 four-minutes’ drive away, access to the M25 Junction 26 in 14 minutes means the development is conveniently located for residents either wanting to travel to London by car or to the neighbouring Essex and Hertfordshire towns.

“Not only this but the local area itself offers a fantastic high street that’s right on our doorstep”

Best of both worlds The Green at Epping Gate is nestled within the desirable ‘Golden Triangle’ of bustling Loughton, aspirational Buckhurst Hill and glamourous Chigwell, so residents will benefit from having an array of independent shops, luxury boutiques and trendy restaurants to choose from. The attractive development offers residents the best of both worlds. Located in leafy Zone 6, Debden Station is a seven-minute walk away, meaning residents can travel into central London via the Central Line, which connects commuters to Stratford in 22 minutes, Bank in 32, Liverpool Street in 33, and Oxford Circus in 42.

Fairview is a hosting an event to celebrate the launch of The Green at Epping Gate on Saturday 24 February, 10am – 5pm, where guests can enjoy a warming cup of coffee, delicious pastries and tasty cupcakes. A proportion of all apartment types will be available to reserve on the day of launch and ready to move into from March 2024. Anyone interested in attending should RSVP with the sales team via email epping.sales@ fairview.co.uk or 020 3966 9818. FEBRUARY 2024 23

Owners, Jason Lindsay, who is a direct descendant of the de Veres who founded the estate, and his wife Demetra, are always looking for new ways to bring Hedingham to life for guests and to keep the destination relevant for the modern day. Last year, they transformed the top floor of the Norman Castle into a magnificent bedroom, the Royal Chamber. Demetra is an architect by trade and designed the space, whilst Jason did the majority of the building works himself. Featuring a grand four-poster bed, exquisite tapestries and exceptional views, the Royal Chamber also includes modern additions, such as a large bath big enough for two and a cleverly hidden smart TV that can be watched from the comfort of the bed. The room can be booked on a Bed & Breakfast or Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis. Champagne, chocolates and a continental breakfast for two are provided with every booking, and, if dining, a locally sourced 5-course tasting menu is served in the breathtaking Banqueting Hall, quite a setting for an intimate dinner for two! Sir Elton John putting piano, jumpsuit and platform boots up for auction By Charlotte McLaughlin

S

ir Elton John’s piano, jumpsuit and platform boots are among items being put up for auction. The musician, 76, is curating the sale of objects from his former Atlanta home with his husband David Furnish and in partnership with auction house Christie’s. The Collection of Sir Elton John: Goodbye Peachtree Road, which is being sold in Rockefeller Centre, New York, includes high-value items such as a painting by British artist Damien Hirst of Sir Elton and Furnish. The work, titled Your Song, in reference to the megastar’s hit track and signed and inscribed “xxx for Elton + David”, has an estimated value of 350,000 to 450,000 US dollars (£280,000 to £360,000). A portrait of Sir Elton by American painter and Oscar-nominated director Julian Schnabel is also estimated to be worth 200,000 to 300,000 US dollars (£160,000 to £240,000). The Yamaha grand piano, model C6F PE, has been put on for 30,000 to 50,000 US dollars (£24,000 to 39,000), while the 1971 pair of silver leather tall platform boots with red leather letters ‘E’ and ‘J’ on both sides could fetch between 5,000 and 10,000 US dollars (£4,000 to £8,000). The jumpsuit, an ivory-and-gold ensemble, was among the first stage clothes made for Sir Elton and was designed by Annie Reavey. It was loaned to make costumes for the

Rocketman film, starring Taron Egerton, and was being sold with an estimate of between 8,000 to 12,000 US dollars (£6,500 to £9,700). Tash Perrin, deputy chairman of Christie’s Americas, said: “This extraordinary collection not only showcases a diverse array of remarkable objects that encapsulate Elton’s unique life, work, and art but also provides our clients with a glimpse into the profound impact that the city of Atlanta had on him. “In the two weeks leading up to the sales, Christie’s Rockefeller Centre Galleries will transform into a series of specially designed immersive spaces, offering a dynamic view into the world of Elton John. “We take immense pride in presenting this multi-category sale, featuring a refined assortment of photographs, artworks, fashion, and costumes — a testament to a man’s eclectic vision, artistry, and impeccable taste.” The auction is also offering an 18-carat-gold limited-edition Cartier watch, a necklace with diamond letters that say “the bitch is back” and silk Versace shirts. Sir Elton also had a Vogue cover by American photographer Irving Penn of fashion model Jean Patchett that could fetch between 100,000 to 150,000 US dollars (£79,000 to £120,000). The musician ended his touring career last year, after spending over 50 years performing at venues throughout the world, when he delivered his last gig in the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Stockholm, Sweden, in July. An exhibition of the collection is open to the public from February 9 to February 21 from 11am to 5pm at Christie’s 20 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. The opening night of sales begins on February 21.

EDUC ATION

Seniors at the Heart of the Oak-Tree Group Located within the heart of the picturesque Epping Forest, the Oak-Tree Group of Schools comprises four schools with excellent track records of academic success and pastoral care.

A

ll four schools take children from the term in which they turn 3, with Oaklands preparing for 11+ entry to a variety of local schools. Braeside, Normanhurst and Coopersale Hall are ‘all through’ schools with senior departments that take children up to 16 for their GCSEs. At each school’s core lies an ethos of personalised education that encourages individual growth catered to each pupil’s needs and the aim of instilling a love of learning from the earliest years through to each crucial milestone. Vibrant Senior Life Life as a senior within the Oak-Tree Group sees a focus on each pupil’s unique strengths and passions that are readily identified and developed. With a wide range of subjects and a challenging curriculum supported by subject specialist teachers and facilities, the schools have consistently achieved excellent results at each level. The Group is proud of its ‘all-through’ model that offers a seamless transition from Kindergarten to Year 11 in smaller class sizes and with more individual attention. This model provides excellent continuity for the pupils to move through each school without the inevitable disruption or anxiety that often comes with changing schools. Teachers get to know the pupils very well, both academically and personally, and cater to their strengths from an early stage. Of course, while many pupils move internally from Year 6 to Year 7, there are also a number of places for external students to join in Year 7. Having juniors and seniors on one site helps to foster a strong sense of community, with whole school areas of responsibility open for pupils to become positive role models. Exciting time at Coopersale Hall, Epping. The introduction of senior pupils began in September 2023 with the first Year 7 cohort as part of a phased integration into Coopersale Hall. Seniors will move through the school year group by year group up to Year 11, where they will sit their GCSE exams. 34 FEBRUARY 2024

Phase one of the new building is now open and there are a number of specialist areas, including ART/DT, Science and Computing, to enhance the learning. Deliberately smaller class sizes and a more personalised education tailored to each pupil’s strengths are very attractive prospects for any senior pupil.

Tips for parents with children starting secondary school I It’s a new life stage for kids and parents alike, says Claire Spreadbury.

t’s the end of an era when your child leaves primary school. Your life and support network have been intertwined within a community that’s always at the end of the phone – if not a WhatsApp message – but now big school is looming and it’s time to move on. Some of that network moves on with you, but a lot of it won’t. And discovering the best ways to tackle secondary – and all the difficulties that can come with it – is often tricky. Arm yourself with these tips and you should breeze through. Get them kitted out with epic new stationery Smiggle might rule the school at primary, but once they’re 11, Stabilo pens and highlighters are top of the lust list, and Paperchase becomes your go-to. Pencil cases should be sleek and cool, and funky organisers and pads make the whole experience feel fresh.

Label everything Once they’re starting secondary, everything seems to cost quite a bit more – the fancy stationery, the school bag, the uniform. To avoid pouring all that money down the drain, be sure to label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced. You can buy name stamps which don’t wash out, stickers which genuinely stay put or even grab a good old Sharpie and write on the labels. Deck them out in cool shoes When it comes to shoe buying on a budget shop online. And if they’re picky, the likes of Next and

36 FEBRUARY 2024

Very let you order several pairs at once, so you can try them all on, return the ones you don’t want and only pay for the ones you do. Oh, and try Kickers. All the cool kids are in them. Get the tech set-up right We’ve all learned the hard way that homeschooling on shared tech is somewhat problematic. The good news, however, is live lessons are a breeze at secondary school, especially if they have their own computer. The Honor MagicBook 14 is ultra light and fast with an all-day battery and fast charging, all while minimising blue light by 50%. Google Chromebooks are also a dream, especially as most schools use Google Classroom. Get to know other parents When your child makes new friends, it’s much harder to get to know their parents. Lots of kids make their own way to school, and they have a phone to organise their own socials. This can feel a little bit worrying when your son or daughter is talking about going to a sleepover and you’ve never even met the child whose house they are staying at, let alone their mum or dad. Undoubtedly, this will get harder. You will be an embarrassing and interfering parent, so before they reach the Kevin The Teenager stage, try to get parents’ numbers, invite kids to your house, ask their mum or dad in when they come to pick them up – it can really help to reassure you.

Label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced

Royal Hospital School shortlisted for

‘HAPPIEST BOARDING SCHOOL’

R

oyal Hospital School (RHS), a leading boarding & day school in Suffolk, has been shortlisted for a number of major school awards, and is featured in the Tatler Schools Guide 2024 of leading public schools and the Good Schools Guide.

“The school turns out kind, thoughtful and confident young adults who can integrate into different environments. And above all, children are happy”, quotes Tatler. “To also be shortlisted as a finalist for ‘Happiest Boarding School’ is a real testament to the warm and welcoming community RHS offers its pupils” says Sophy Walker, Director of Admissions & Marketing at RHS. “The school’s commitment to the wellbeing of its pupils, parents and staff also led it to being awarded the prestigious national Wellbeing Award for Schools earlier this year, following an ambitious initiative to engage the whole school community in activities designed to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health.” “The well-being principle at RHS is a golden thread in every aspect of school life and that’s why my child is flourishing in all areas,” says one parent. RHS is also excelling in its curriculum, winning the ‘Empowering Young Entrepreneurs’ category against other leading schools in the UK. They were also a finalist in ‘Co-Educational Excellence’, highlighting the school’s commitment to creating an inclusive and diverse environment. RHS offers families a modern range of boarding options, allowing pupils to fully benefit from the 38 FEBRUARY 2024

incredible facilities on offer, which include a music school, art and design centre, drama studio, library and resource centre, 96 acres of sports fields, all-weather pitches, indoor swimming pool, golf course, indoor climbing wall, gym and fitness suite, martial arts and dance studios, netball and tennis courts plus a world leading RYA Sailing Academy. The Benefits of Transitioning at 11+ Deciding a primary school for your child is an important decision and for those opting to pursue the independent sector, there are now varying options as to whether to sit your child for 3+, 4+, 7+ or 11+. In some areas, even 5+ and 6+ options are available.

W

hilst transitioning early into a ‘through’ school may appear to alleviate the pressure of sitting 11+ examinations, there are a number of reasons why this is not necessarily true. There are also strong arguments to support remaining in a primary school up until the point of 11+ – a familiar environment, pupil knowledge and the potential to flourish. Firstly, remaining in a through primary school provides children with a familiar and consistent environment. This safe and nurturing environment helps children to develop positive connections both with adults in the school and with their peers. It is these connections that develop and change as the child’s character and personality grows. For some children, these connections can be established quickly, whilst for others a longer duration is needed. By providing children with a familiar environment, we are able to encourage pupils to develop these connections at their own pace, whilst also providing a foundation for developing their own academic progress. By the age of 10/11 years, not only have we, as teachers, gained a deep understanding of each pupil, but the children themselves are also more self-aware and understanding as to what they like and dislike. 40 FEBRUARY 2024

Developmentally, certain skillsets do not start to develop until post 7+ and therefore the ages of 7-11 years are still key in gaining an understanding of the areas that a pupil may thrive. In addition to this, pupils in Years 5 & 6 experience both physical and emotional changes. They are starting to mature and become more independent and socially aware. Year 6 becomes a natural time of change for a child and the 11+ transition, a time at which a potential ‘fresh start’ is both welcomed and needed. Finally, the aim of all education is to help an individual grow, develop and flourish. With the establishment of strong connections and a deep understanding of the pupils, the support and provision for the individual can also develop. By focusing on the individual development both inside and outside of the classroom with engagement via our 360-degree curriculum, pupils are given opportunities to learn more about how they feel, who they are and where they belong. This in turn encourages them to be a balanced and well-rounded individual, ready to flourish as they embark upon their next academic journey. Blackberry Build

ONE OF A KIND WITH YOU IN MIND As a young yet highly experienced firm, Blackberry Build is built on a foundation of outstanding artistry, unparalleled design skills and an ongoing commitment to premium quality.

A

t a very young age I wondered what my purpose in this life was. I worked various jobs, which I would start with excitement, but as soon as I had mastered them, I would start seeking a new challenge. I craved constant learning and growth and wanted to push myself forward. I could not agree more with the quotes – ‘Never tolerate average’ or ‘Impossible is a state of mind’. I started my career in the construction industry 22 years ago, right at the bottom, as a bricklayer’s labourer and worked my way up. Within five years, I was put in charge of a small crew. The following 12 years took a lot of hard work, courage and effort and were very challenging but successful. From a site supervisor, I became a project director picking up a BA (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering, NVQ Level 7 in Construction Management, Membership of a Chartered Institute of Building and other qualifications. NEW HOMES PROJECTS My main and most enjoyable projects were marketing suites and show apartments for such industry giants as St George and Berkeley Homes. 66 FEBRUARY 2024

As these projects were the developer’s flagships and showpieces for the quality of design and workmanship, they had to be completed to an immaculate level, and that is what I enjoyed most! After doing this for almost seven years, I had a huge hunger for a new challenge. I had tons of experience, knowledge, determination, and a massive will to create something unique. This is where Blackberry Build was born. It went through the stages and evolved into a unique project delivery company like no other. Now I’m glad to say that I’m thrilled with what I do as my ‘work’. It’s crazy; I like it so much I don’t even call it a ‘job’. I just enjoy it too much.” Richie says, “Blackberry Build implements everything I

Planning your dream kitchen?

These are the five must-have features to include

I

n the pursuit of creating the kitchen of your dreams we delve into the world of kitchen design with Urban Myth, a local kitchen design firm known for their innovative approach. In conversation with Peter Hill, the Head of Sales at Urban Myth, we aim to uncover the secrets behind crafting the perfect culinary haven. Peter says “Our customers are increasingly opting for versatile spaces that can adapt to various functions, to create a multifunctional hub for cooking, dining, and socialising. Here, he shares his top five features you could consider incorporating.”

70 FEBRUARY 2024

POCKET DOOR PANTRIES Cupboard pantries with pocket doors represent a brilliant fusion of functionality and aesthetic appeal, revolutionizing kitchen spaces. These sleek, concealed storage units serve a dual purpose as breakfast or coffee stations, providing a convenient retreat to streamline morning routines. The pocket doors open to reveal an organised storage system and dedicated sections for small appliances or your microwave. By seamlessly tucking away these elements behind closed doors, the main kitchen workspace remains uncluttered.

“Our customers are increasingly opting for versatile spaces that can adapt to various functions, to create a multifunctional hub for cooking, dining, and socialising”

WONDERFUL WORKTOPS The worktop is the centrepiece of every kitchen, and it is important to select a material that balances durability and style. Hill says “we offer a diverse range of worktop options that enhance both the visual appeal and practicality of the kitchen with many on display in our showroom and we always suggest viewing in person where we can advise on individual requirements.” DISCREET DESIGN The trend towards open-plan living has led to a growing preference for a seamless transition between kitchen spaces and adjoining areas. Discreet design in the kitchen is a concept where the design seamlessly combines aesthetics with functionality, the kitchen’s practical elements do not disrupt the simplicity and elegance of the overall design. Integrated appliances, blending seamlessly with cabinetry, contribute to a streamlined visual appeal, while hidden utility doors discreetly house essential functions, preserving the kitchen’s minimalist charm. The result is a space where form and function coexist harmoniously, creating an atmosphere of refined simplicity without sacrificing efficiency. SLICK SPLASHBACKS A continuous expanse of interrupted stone, extending seamlessly from worktop to splashback, creates an immediate focal point in the kitchen. This addition introduces stunning natural textures and shapes, contributing to the modern trend of increasingly bold use of stone in kitchen design.

GROOVY GLASS Glass elements add a touch of sophistication to any kitchen design whilst multiplying the amount of natural light around the room, the use of ribbed or fluted glass has become popular for kitchen cabinets as it offers the perfect balance of privacy and visibility offering a glimpse of what’s inside but without the need for a flawless display. We also predict the grooved, ribbed effect on solid doors will be a trend for 2024 to add a touch of contemporary texture to your design. If you’re renovating your kitchen this year, visit www.urbanmyth.net for more design inspiration or book an Urban Myth showroom appointment by calling 0208 531 3413. FEBRUARY 2024 71

ood Bros was started in a Bethnal Green stable in the East End of London by a small team of furniture makers. Through the Roaring 20s, with its flappers, jazz, Charleston, the general strike, and the Wall Street Crash, with the boom and bust affecting everyone. During the war there had been many restrictions meaning only ‘utility’ furniture was allowed to be made. Wood Bros moved down the River Lea to the current factory in Marsh Lane, Ware and it was here that the founder HW Wood created the well known ‘Old Charm’ oak range of traditional cabinet furniture. Inspired by history and tradition Old Charm is still going today, blending heritage, design and fine craftsmanship. Some of these current classic designs have remained unchanged from the originals of 50 years ago. During this time, Wood Bros won the Queen’s Award for Exporting, furnishing the most prestigious national project of the 1960’s, the ocean going transatlantic liner, the Queen Elizabeth II and many other Cunard liners. Wood Bros was also responsible for making its own version of the Great Bed of Ware as well as an enormous replica of King Arthur’s round table! Wood Bros is still an active participant of the local community and is currently involved with higher education environmental projects with the University of Hertfordshire and Harris Tweed as well as collaborating with the National Trust. DISCOVER THE

MONOCHROME TREND

O

ut with the old in with the new - say goodbye to plain whites and hello to chic monochrome décor. Find out how to nail this look with the help of our resident Interior Style Advisor Rebecca Snowden. Monochrome décor is having a moment with over 20 million views on TikTok. It’s all about easy but luxe styling with simple neutrals and minimalist touches. Say goodbye to plain white and instead go for warmer off-white tones like cream, beige or taupe. Monochrome’s popularity is also linked to the #softminimalism trend which is now at 24 million on TikTok views and counting. “Think of it as a sister trend as it takes the same light, calming colours of monochrome and adds comforting curved lines and natural materials,” Rebecca says. “After the year we’ve had it’s no surprise that we just want to relax and reset at home. This trend is about prioritising yourself - what’s soothing and inviting to you and to promote your own sense of wellbeing.” “If you’re stuck choosing between both trends -

don’t worry, why not bring them together? Mixing both monochrome and soft minimalism allows us to craft spaces that not only look great but feel even better. Those off-white tones will warm up the room and textures like cotton, velvet and boucle are perfect for this look. Set the mood with soft lighting and bring in raw finishes and curves such as a clay vase or stoneware. Bringing monochrome and soft minimalism together is like a cosy hygge cocktail - served chilled with close friends and family.” furniturechoice.co.uk
