Seniors at the Heart of the Oak-Tree Group Located within the heart of the picturesque Epping Forest, the Oak-Tree Group of Schools comprises four schools with excellent track records of academic success and pastoral care.
A
ll four schools take children from the term in which they turn 3, with Oaklands preparing for 11+ entry to a variety of local schools. Braeside, Normanhurst and Coopersale Hall are ‘all through’ schools with senior departments that take children up to 16 for their GCSEs. At each school’s core lies an ethos of personalised education that encourages individual growth catered to each pupil’s needs and the aim of instilling a love of learning from the earliest years through to each crucial milestone. Vibrant Senior Life Life as a senior within the Oak-Tree Group sees a focus on each pupil’s unique strengths and passions that are readily identified and developed. With a wide range of subjects and a challenging curriculum supported by subject specialist teachers and facilities, the schools have consistently achieved excellent results at each level. The Group is proud of its ‘all-through’ model that offers a seamless transition from Kindergarten to Year 11 in smaller class sizes and with more individual attention. This model provides excellent continuity for the pupils to move through each school without the inevitable disruption or anxiety that often comes with changing schools. Teachers get to know the pupils very well, both academically and personally, and cater to their strengths from an early stage. Of course, while many pupils move internally from Year 6 to Year 7, there are also a number of places for external students to join in Year 7. Having juniors and seniors on one site helps to foster a strong sense of community, with whole school areas of responsibility open for pupils to become positive role models. Exciting time at Coopersale Hall, Epping. The introduction of senior pupils began in September 2023 with the first Year 7 cohort as part of a phased integration into Coopersale Hall. Seniors will move through the school year group by year group up to Year 11, where they will sit their GCSE exams. 26 JANUARY 2024
Phase one of the new building is now open and there are a number of specialist areas, including ART/DT, Science and Computing, to enhance the learning. Deliberately smaller class sizes and a more personalised education tailored to each pupil’s strengths are very attractive prospects for any senior pupil.
“Open Days offer a glimpse into the vibrant life across the Oak-Tree Group and provide prospective families the opportunity to witness first-hand the personalised approach to education”
An Invitation to visit Oak-Tree Schools in action Open Days offer a glimpse into the vibrant life across the Oak-Tree Group and provide prospective families the opportunity to witness first-hand the personalised approach to education. Tours are conducted by the pupils themselves, and so are naturally open and unscripted. With informative speeches from the Headmistress, there are plenty of opportunities for families’ questions to be answered.

Tips for parents with children starting secondary school I It’s a new life stage for kids and parents alike, says Claire Spreadbury.
t’s the end of an era when your child leaves primary school. Your life and support network have been intertwined within a community that’s always at the end of the phone – if not a WhatsApp message – but now big school is looming and it’s time to move on. Some of that network moves on with you, but a lot of it won’t. And discovering the best ways to tackle secondary – and all the difficulties that can come with it – is often tricky. Arm yourself with these tips and you should breeze through. Get them kitted out with epic new stationery Smiggle might rule the school at primary, but once they’re 11, Stabilo pens and highlighters are top of the lust list, and Paperchase becomes your go-to. Pencil cases should be sleek and cool, and funky organisers and pads make the whole experience feel fresh.
Label everything Once they’re starting secondary, everything seems to cost quite a bit more – the fancy stationery, the school bag, the uniform. To avoid pouring all that money down the drain, be sure to label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced. You can buy name stamps which don’t wash out, stickers which genuinely stay put or even grab a good old Sharpie and write on the labels. Deck them out in cool shoes When it comes to shoe buying on a budget shop online. And if they’re picky, the likes of Next and
28 JANUARY 2024
Very let you order several pairs at once, so you can try them all on, return the ones you don’t want and only pay for the ones you do. Oh, and try Kickers. All the cool kids are in them. Get the tech set-up right We’ve all learned the hard way that homeschooling on shared tech is somewhat problematic. The good news, however, is live lessons are a breeze at secondary school, especially if they have their own computer. The Honor MagicBook 14 is ultra light and fast with an all-day battery and fast charging, all while minimising blue light by 50%. Google Chromebooks are also a dream, especially as most schools use Google Classroom. Get to know other parents When your child makes new friends, it’s much harder to get to know their parents. Lots of kids make their own way to school, and they have a phone to organise their own socials. This can feel a little bit worrying when your son or daughter is talking about going to a sleepover and you’ve never even met the child whose house they are staying at, let alone their mum or dad. Undoubtedly, this will get harder. You will be an embarrassing and interfering parent, so before they reach the Kevin The Teenager stage, try to get parents’ numbers, invite kids to your house, ask their mum or dad in when they come to pick them up – it can really help to reassure you.
Label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced

A
The importance of SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
s we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY… • Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting • It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly • Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there. • Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally • Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…. Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school. • How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam? • Are there high expectations and high academic achievements? • Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure) • What are the classroom sizes? 30 JANUARY 2024
• What is expected of my child with regard to homework? • Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia? • Is there a bullying policy? • What lunchtime meals are available? • What sports and music facilities are available? • What after school clubs and trips are available? • How many pupils branch out into further education? After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

Turning sporting dreams into reality at Felsted
W
hen England rugby star Max Malins made his World Cup debut, running out on the wing to face Chile in Lille last year, he became the latest in a long line of former students of Felsted School to play sport at the highest level. In fact, no fewer than eight former Felsted pupils are currently playing professional rugby and many others are achieving great things in sports as diverse as netball, shooting, and racing driving. The school has all the pitches and courts, gyms and pools an aspiring athlete could ever need on its 90-acre countryside campus just an hour from the capital, and it also offers the expertise and pathways to help pupils to enter the sporting profession. ‘At Felsted, we prepare pupils who have a desire to perform at a high level of sport with individualised development programmes and effective training run by experienced coaches, many of whom are ex-professionals themselves,’ says Felsted’s Director of Sport Charlie Knightley, who himself represented England in the Over 50s Cricket World Cup in Spring 2023 in South Africa. Rugby at the school is headed up by ex2 3364 NJ O MA BR ER A VNEU Y 220 02 23 4
Wasps Andrew Le Chevalier; netball by England international and London Pulse player Lindsay Keable; hockey is coached by Welsh International Jo Westwood; and cricket by England international Jason Gallian. Felsted is one of the UK’s top 100 cricketing schools, according to the Cricketer Schools Guide 2023, and is a performance hub for regional women’s cricket team, the Sunrisers. There are links too with Netball Super league teams Saracens Mavericks and London Pulse, where several pupils currently train in the U15 and U19 Academies. Rugby is a real success story – Felsted is an official partner of Saracens RFC with the two organisations working together to identify talented young players and nurture them on the path towards a career in professional rugby. However, pupils of all levels of ability are encouraged to take part in sport at Felsted, with teams A to D fielded in the core sports and a choice of activities to encourage a healthy Lifestyle. Whatever their sporting ambitions, pupils at Felsted have all they need to achieve them. For more information about sport at Felsted and Sports Scholarships, please visit felsted.org/sport

An Oasis of Calm
Traditional style and old fashion charm meets contemporary function and facilities in this Victorian seaside hotel nestled between a picturesque riverside park and beautiful pebble beach & promenade.
T
he stunning property was acquired just over 5 years ago by a young couple, Jonty & Bev and although the hotel has kept its traditional charm, an injection of modernisation has taken place to appeal to a wider audience. For the guest who seeks ‘an oasis of calm in an ever-changing world’ (as was the hotel tagline found in a 70’s brochure) alongside some more modern luxuries such as high speed broad band & smart tv’s are well catered for. Jonty & Bev – parents to 3 children under 4 - realised the importance of a good night’s sleep so invested heavily in their beds and linen to add that extra bit of luxury to a stay. The beautifully manicured lawn has received “Sidmouth in Bloom” awards and can be enjoyed throughout the year for a game of croquet. Or a cool G&T can be sipped on the terrace where you can watch the world go by if you so prefer. Buffet breakfasts and 3 page dinner menu’s won’t be found here instead breakfast is served in 3 courses and the evening meals change every night. Local and fresh produce is sourced and all dietary requirements are catered for. Whether it be a perfectly poached egg or a home made bread & butter pudding – all can be found here and is lovingly cooked by the fantastic head chef, Julian Temple, who has been at the hotel for over 30 years.
Sidmouth itself is a beautiful coastal town with a regency feel, ideal for visitors of all ages. It lies on the Jurassic Coast which is dominated by vivid red sandstone cliff and the beautiful pebble beaches are the perfect background for an afternoon stroll. The hotel is dog friendly and have 3 ground floor rooms available if you feel like you can’t leave your fourlegged friend at home. ometimes it takes a super chilly cold snap to spark snuggle season – and remind you how winter woollies are a wardrobe essential. And with so many brights on our radar, not to mention the ease of a pull-on with a pop of colour for an instant style update, or a flourish of fingerless gloves to show off your nail art, it’s time to dial up your daywear of fleecy extras…
SUPERSIZED SCARVES The blanket scarf is the runaway hit, which will make you look every inch a fashionista. Essentially, the bigger, the brighter, the better! Cited by Vogue as the biggest accessory trend across the autumn/ winter 2023 collections, this is not a comforter to keep under wraps – wear it long and loose, then drape it over the back of your neck when the temperature plummets. 285 0 0J AJ A NU NAURAYR2Y0 2 24 0 2 4

JD WILLIAMS PINK RIBBED FINGERLESS GLOVE, £8.40 (WAS £14)
HERO HATS Versatile and up to date, the beanie continues to build its loyal following… and prove it’s more than a one-size suits all. Go for chenille, cashmere or merino yarn for the softest pull-on – it’s the headgear of the moment to look effortlessly cool.
GORGEOUS GLOVES From arm warmers to fingerless gloves, the added bonus of being finger-free is you can make a style statement out of these wristees – and get more mileage from your manicure. After all, what’s the point of spending time in the salon only to cover up those bold shades, twinkly designs and two-tone looks with a run-of-the-mill mitten… leaving you fumbling for your phone.

See Kylie Minogue, Rachel Weisz and Jodie Comer don trench coats for Burberry show The heritage brand showed its spring/ summer collection to a star-studded front row. By Prudence Wade.
K
ylie Minogue, Rachel Weisz and Jodie Comer joined stars from the worlds of music, film, fashion and sport to watch Burberry’s London Fashion
Week show. This was Bradford-born Daniel Lee’s second outing at London Fashion Week as creative director of the brand, having taken over from Riccardo Tisci in September 2022. After choosing Kennington Park as the location for his first show, Lee settled on another green space for this season, setting up a large tent with a green checked print on top in Highbury Fields, north London. Padam Padam singer Minogue, who performed at London Fashion Week’s opening party, wore a leather-look green coat to watch the show, paired with the unusual colour combination

of purple shoes. Green was a common theme among attendees. Rachel Weisz, who recently starred in TV series Dead Ringers, also wore a green trench coat, but in a matte material and with a more voluminous silhouette, and wide-legged patterned trousers underneath. Retired long-distance runner Sir Mo Farah opted for a pared-back look that was unmistakably Burberry – a trench coat with the brand’s nova check lining, and the same print emblazoned on his shoes. Killing Eve star Jodie Comer channelled transitional dressing for the occasion, wearing a strapless checked knee-length dress, paired with black riding boots. Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and actor husband Jason Statham were also in attendance – Huntington-Whiteley in a classic Burberry trench and oversized sunglasses, while Statham wore a black jacket with an olive jumper underneath and matching eyewear. Naomi Ackie, who portrayed Whitney Houston in I Wanna Dance With Somebody, wore an autumnal outfit of wide-legged green and white checked trousers and diamond-patterned top. Also picking up on the green and white theme was American actress Gabrielle Union, who wore a tartan coat with a slicked-back hairstyle. Other attendees included Arsenal footballer Bukayo Saka, Blur singer Damon Albarn, The Banshees Of Inisherin star Barry Keoghan and model Jourdan Dunn, all keen to see Lee unveil his spring/summer 2024 collection. The outfits on the runway were a much more classic take on the Burberry aesthetic. Lee’s first season received mixed reviews, with some saying Lee strayed from the brand’s DNA and introduced too many quirky elements, such as woollen hats that looked like ducks and hot water bottles used as bags. For this show, Lee put the focus on Burberry’s signature product, the trench coat. Alongside more traditional cuts, he reimagined the style in multiple ways – with sleeveless versions, cropped styles and a bomber-trench hybrid. Lee is making bright blue Burberry’s hallmark colour under his tenure, dubbing it Knight Blue in
a nod to the knight on the brand’s logo. There were flashes of blue throughout the collection, from collars to check patterns. The runway was as star-studded as the front row, with some of the biggest names in British fashion on the catwalk. Adwoa Aboah walked in an on-trend set of a patterned shirt and relaxed knee-length shorts, and was joined by models Neelam Gill, Leomie Anderson and Jean Campbell. Elsewhere on the runway, floral and checked gowns had scooped backs, and an emphasis was put on chic accessories – including oversized belt bags, under-arm handbags and glittering clutches. Lee tapped into the trend for goth glam makeup in the beauty looks, with many of the models sporting dark lipstick. While it was a more traditional collection than last season, it still felt fresh and modern, and there was a hint of irreverence at the end, when a male model closed the show in low-rise navy trousers, a statement belt with Burberry’s logo as a buckle, and no shirt. Lee has been building anticipation for the show with various stunts, such as renaming Bond Street tube station Burberry Street, and taking over Norman’s Cafe in Archway – turning it into a Burberry-style greasy spoon, with lots of blue check and even a visit from former Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry. With a star-studded front row giving their seal of approval and a more wearable collection, it looks like Lee has hit his stride at Burberry. CA TO J A NOU RBYE R2 0220 42 3 5 33 0 3

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY DURING A COLD WATER SWIM? “R
Imy Brighty-Potts asks GPs about the immediate impact on the body.
esearch suggests that cold water swimming has a wide variety of health benefits including mood improvement linked with the release of ‘feel good’ brain chemicals, reduced depression and improvement in general wellbeing. Cold water swimming can also have cardiovascular benefits,” says GP Dr Nisa Aslam from Puressentiel (uk.puressentiel.com). However, safety is obviously something to be wary of when it comes to cold water swimming – also known as winter swimming or ice swimming. “[It] requires preparation and acclimatisation and should be done with a group of people, not on your own,” warns Aslam. “Warm up your leg and arm muscles before you wade in. Don’t jump into cold water, rather wade in slowly up to your waist, dip your shoulders into the water then swim.” But what happens to different parts of our bodies when we take our cold water dip?
56 JANUARY 2024
LUNGS
Ever jumped in a cold pool and suddenly felt like you can’t breathe? “The first stage following full immersion is known as ‘cold shock’. In the first few seconds your lungs contract. This [can be] followed by uncontrollable rapid or deep breathing – hyperventilation – and loss of breathing control,” says Aslam. It wouldn’t necessarily happen to regular, acclimatised swimmers (although it may). But, she says: “If you are not a regular cold water swimmer, this can happen as a physiological reaction.”
HEART Our hearts react quickly to the shock. “Your heart rate, blood pressure and output of blood from the heart – cardiac output – increase rapidly,” Aslam says. If you are fit and healthy then this isn’t necessarily something to worry about. However it may be, “if you have not done this type of activity before – and let’s say have a full stomach from Christmas dinner plus consumed a few alcohol-based drinks”.
“[It] requires preparation and acclimatisation and should be done with a group of people, not on your own”
SKIN “Swimming in cold water can actually change your complexion slightly. Due to the increased heart rate and blood flow your skin will get a healthy glow for a short time after you’ve finished,” says Dr Rhianna McClymont, a GP at online healthcare service Livi (livi.co.uk/).
BRAIN Swimming in cold water makes your brain produce more endorphins – a hormone that makes us feel good and can even relieve pain – to combat the stressful feelings created by the quick change in environment, McClymont explains. “This kind of activity has also been shown to be beneficial for our mental health too. Regular cold water swimming can help us to cope better with different types of stress, as the body starts to learn how to regulate our stress hormones,” she notes. “Not only are these changes internally happening, but the increase in adrenaline from being in cold water can create a feeling of euphoria, [due to] the release of endorphins. As a result, cold water swimming or a cold bath can improve our overall mood, confidence and even libido.”
the skin, feet, toes, hands and fingers – constrict. It’s a response which is the result of the action of ‘cold receptors in the periphery peaking after 30 seconds with adaptation taking a couple of minutes or so. “Once a swimmer is able to bring their breathing under control following the first two-minute phase of cold exposure, they enter the second phase of short-term exposure,” she adds. “During this phase, the muscle and nerve function is affected, particularly in the arms, head and neck. Biochemical activity in the body cells, muscles and nerves is interrupted. As the muscles cool further, there may be an increased sense of pain.”
“Swimming in cold water makes your brain produce more endorphins – a hormone that makes us feel good and can even relieve pain”
OUR LIMBS There’s a reason we feel the cold most in our extremities; like hands, feet, arms and legs. Aslam explains: “Blood vessels in the periphery – such as J A NJ A UN AURAYR Y2 0220 42 4 5 27 9 7

Essential loungewear trends Snuggle up in style with these effortless outfits. By Katie Wright.
A
s we get into the depths of winter and the temperatures continue to drop, our comfiest clothes become more important than ever. Whether it’s for weekend cocooning with the family, trying to keep warm while working from home or running errands on chilly mornings, loungewear is the perfect solution for your everyday winter wardrobe. This season, fashion meets function with ultra-cosy fabrics, chic colour combinations, and sportswear-inspired styles you’ll want to wear around the clock. These are the key loungewear trends to know about now… Fuzzy fabrics Teddy bear-esque textiles such as fleece and borg are bang on trend and provide extra insulation when you need it the most. For a beautifully luxe lounge look, opt for a minimalist two-piece set in a soft cream, white or ivory shade. Latte lounging As seen on Jennifer Lawrence and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, the ‘latte dressing’ trend – wearing a combination of coffee colours – has blown up on TikTok and it works perfectly with loungewear too. From milky tones to rich mocha, you can mix and match separates or go headto-toe in one shade. Huggable hoodies For days when you plan to stay put on the sofa, a super-soft oversized hoodie is the ultimate winter fashion fix. A cross between a dressing gown and a blanket, a fluffy hooded dress is wonderfully warm and makes a fantastic gift too. 285 8 8J AJ A NU NAURAYR2Y0 2 24 0 2 4

Blackberry Build
ONE OF A KIND WITH YOU IN MIND As a young yet highly experienced firm, Blackberry Build is built on a foundation of outstanding artistry, unparalleled design skills and an ongoing commitment to premium quality.
A
t a very young age I wondered what my purpose in this life was. I worked various jobs, which I would start with excitement, but as soon as I had mastered them, I would start seeking a new challenge. I craved constant learning and growth and wanted to push myself forward. I could not agree more with the quotes – ‘Never tolerate average’ or ‘Impossible is a state of mind’. I started my career in the construction industry 22 years ago, right at the bottom, as a bricklayer’s labourer and worked my way up. Within five years, I was put in charge of a small crew. The following 12 years took a lot of hard work, courage and effort and were very challenging but successful. From a site supervisor, I became a project director picking up a BA (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering, NVQ Level 7 in Construction Management, Membership of a Chartered Institute of Building and other qualifications. NEW HOMES PROJECTS My main and most enjoyable projects were marketing suites and show apartments for such industry giants as St George and Berkeley Homes. 62 JANUARY 2024
As these projects were the developer’s flagships and showpieces for the quality of design and workmanship, they had to be completed to an immaculate level, and that is what I enjoyed most! After doing this for almost seven years, I had a huge hunger for a new challenge. I had tons of experience, knowledge, determination, and a massive will to create something unique. This is where Blackberry Build was born. It went through the stages and evolved into a unique project delivery company like no other. Now I’m glad to say that I’m thrilled with what I do as my ‘work’. It’s crazy; I like it so much I don’t even call it a ‘job’. I just enjoy it too much.” Richie says, “Blackberry Build implements everything I

BUILDING A REPUTATION OF EXCELLENCE Every task on Blackberry Build projects is carried out by a master of the trade, seeking the highest possible outcome, and average is just not something we would tolerate. YOUR IDEAS MERGE WITH OUR EXPERTISE Blackberry Build is a place where a client comes with an idea and leaves with a perfect house, which they will enjoy for many years to come. Our unique approach and customer experience is constantly praised among our clients. A UNIQUE PROJECT NEEDS A BESPOKE APPROACH Whether you plan to build a new home from scratch or renovate an existing property, the skills, experience, and knowledge of the Blackberry Build team allow you to transform your vision into a reality. We recognise that every project is unique, as is every client, which means that we spend time understanding your requirements, budget, and timeframes, in order to tailor our expertise to the demands of your individual project. 2023: The Year of the
ECLECTIC INTERIOR J
ust where has the time gone... One moment we’re still basking in the glow of Salone del Mobile and now, the year is over and it still feels like we’re still waiting for The Big 2023 Interiors Movement to emerge – this isn’t how it’s supposed to be! Or is it? Sure, there have been some growing themes throughout the year, but unlike before they exist either happily merging into each other, the dividing lines broken down, or completely contradicting each other. And that’s what 2023 has all been about, the throwing away of the rule book, and the uninhibited celebrating of good design, whatever it may be, and whatever it may sit next to in the home. Eclecticism, doing whatever we like in our interiors, was the decorating motto of 2023. We’ve seen the rise of ‘The home as the sanctuary’ in recent years – this year it’s more like ‘My home is just for me’. Like that chair? Take it. Like that table? Take it. They don’t go together? That’s ok, it’s all about how they make us feel – if they summon that warm, fuzzy feeling in your chest, they belong in your dining room. It’s historic. It’s hyper-contemporary. It’s highgloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi. It’s luxe. It’s laid back. Put all of the interior pieces you love into a big pot, mix them all together, and that’s 2023. Spaces became dynamic, personalised and free.
Interiors became about self-expression, each area a visual representation of who you are, design objects becoming strokes on an artist’s canvas. Beautiful objects stood in the home to be admired standalone or as part of the fuller exhibition. Colours danced, textures soared and materials intermingled. Styles, influences and ages fused. It’s wild, it’s calm, and yet it really makes sense. 2023 was the year of the Me Interior, the Do Whatever You Like Interior, the Embrace It All Interior. But there were a few signals along the way as to where we’re headed. Surfaces spanned got tactile, from the highlytextured to the mega smooth, with colours similarly extreme and high-definition, pigmentrich tones taking over. Scandi design took an unexpected twist, sofas went exploring and metallics got involved with it all. It was quite the year. In the closing moments of 2023, the echoes of such eclectic design resonate, leaving a lasting impression for the new interiors era, one where diversity and the celebration of unique aesthetics define the way we curate our spaces. Let us present the key materials and finishes from the mix that will guide us into the coming year...
COLOURFUL EXPLOSION: Dig out your kaleidoscopes and pop on your sunglasses because the pigment party isn’t over. 8666 J JAANN UU AR 2 0 2240 2 4 AYR Y
“It’s historic. It’s hypercontemporary. It’s high-gloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi”
Powerful, impactful colours have reigned this year and there’s no sign of a slowdown. Lead by the primary tones of vivid scarlet, rich ultramarine and radiant yellow with support from fiery orange, intense magenta and in-the-jungle green, the modern furniture designs of 2023 were soaked in saturation.
THE NEW NORDIC:
SUPER TEXTURES:
If you’re an aficionado of Scandi style, you always knew what you were going to get when adding to your collection – the highest quality materials, illustrious design names and classic, pass-down-the-generations-worthy design. OK – nothing’s changed in that regard, but this year Nordic furniture had a different feel, many pieces completely shaking off the past and creating brand new, original and innovative designs rather than the quiet subtleties we may be used to.
ADVENTUROUS SOFAS:
From exaggerated upholstery to extravagant finishes, this year we honed in on touch. Ridged markings were carved into solid materials and tailored into the soft to highlight their threedimensionality form a layer of shadows. Glass took a U-turn and went from the definition of smooth to hazy, distorted and uneven, taking on the look of frozen water and casting shadows that transform a room into something ethereal. Materials got loose, relaxing their yarns to become more tactile, plush or soft for a cosy cocooning feel as well as creating experimental juxtapositions alongside other textures.
The modern sofa has moved into the realms of indescribability – it’s something curved, something angled, something long, something compact, something with gaps in, something a bit hard... Furniture-wise, the sofa is the centre of the home. It’s the comfiest place to be, where everyone wants to sit, its where we unwind, its where we relax, it’s where we catch up, it’s where life happens. Our seating needs are growing – to engage with each other, to fit around corners beauty, to fit the extended family, to double as a work space, to create sculptural – and sofas have heard us.
Disco-ball-worthy spaces entered the contemporary design sphere this year with metallic accents edging indoors. It was a year that glittered, glistened and shone as playful and exuberant metallics graced platforms of all kinds: from the most up-to-date of living rooms to the catwalks of Dior, Chanel and Tory Burch, as well as stages stormed by Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. From golden glints to silvery sheens, metallic accents in the home are enthralling and magical.
DAZZLING METALLICS:

Imagine starting your day with a rejuvenating swim or unwinding after a long day with a leisurely dip. With Origin, this can be your new reality. Whether you seek solitude for personal reflection, quality time with family, or a space for entertaining guests, an indoor pool can effortlessly adapt to your needs. Swimming is a fantastic activity that can have a positive impact on your mental health, not to mention the amazing advantages for your physical health too. Numerous studies have shown the positive impact that swimming can have on your body; swimmers have a lower risk of heart disease and strokes, lower blood pressure and reduced joint pain.
In fact, a SwimEngland study found that those who swim regularly felt on average 12 years younger than those who don’t. Having a sauna and steam room alongside your swimming pool would allow you to create a sanctuary of well-being in the comfort of your own home. Saunas and steam rooms also have incredible health benefits such as increased circulation, improved heart function, reduced risk of disease and muscle and exercise recovery. The calming and relaxing nature of these environments make them one of the most loved forms of stress relief leading to better sleep, improved wellness and increased blood flow to the brain, releasing endorphins and enhancing your overall mood. By integrating these spa facilities, an indoor pool can transform your home into a holistic centre of well-being and fun. With over 40 years of experience building award-winning indoor pools, Origin’s reputation for excellence is a testament to their unwavering commitment to their client-led construction process. Trust is paramount when embarking on a costly building process, thankfully Origin is unlike conventional pool builders and adopts a holistic approach.

Beige will remain the chosen colour palette After a few grey years, beige made its way in 2023. Wallsauce predicts the neutral colour palette shall remain for some. Mural choices for this palette are predicted to include beautiful florals along with concrete effects. Beige is a great base colour, so opting to add splashes of colour at a later date won’t cost you a new scheme. wallsauce.com
