THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE

From the imagination of Neil Gaiman, best-selling author of Coraline, Good Omens and The Sandman, comes the National Theatre’s major new stage adaptation of The Ocean at the End of the Lane. This thrilling adventure of fantasy, myth and friendship, is a five-star spectacular which blends magic with memory in a tour-de-force of storytelling that takes audiences on an epic journey to a childhood once forgotten and the darkness that lurks at the very edge of it.

Returning to his childhood home, a man finds himself standing beside the pond of the old Sussex farmhouse where he used to play. He’s transported to his 12th birthday when his remarkable friend Lettie claimed it wasn’t a pond, but an ocean – a place where everything is possible…

Plunged into a magical world, their survival depends on their ability to reckon with ancient forces that threaten to destroy everything around them.

BUTCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

Folk singer, lesbian and checked-shirt-collector Grace Petrie has been incorrectly called Sir every day of her adult life, and, having finally run out of things to write whiny songs about, she’s putting down the guitar to try and work out why. Finding herself at 35 in an age of incessantly and increasingly fraught gender politics, Grace feels both more exposed and less seen than ever. Join her as she explores what butch identity means in a world moving beyond labels, and tries to work out where it, and she, belong in the new frontline of queer liberation. Sounds funny, right? No stranger to comedy, Grace has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s The Now Show and smash hit podcast The Guilty Feminist, and has long since earned a reputation as the folk scene’s funniest lesbian. Her eagerly-awaited standup debut has been a long time coming - and was a runaway success at 2022’s Edinburgh Festival.

Let’s Talk Kindergarten

Braeside in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall in Epping, Normanhurst in North Chingford and Oaklands in Loughton make up the privately-owned Oak-Tree Group of Schools. All four schools have well-established and popular Kindergartens, catering to children from 2½ years.

We talk to Matthew Hagger, Group Managing Principal, about the benefits of starting with the Oak-Tree Group in Kindergarten before continuing up through the school.

Q: What are the benefits of attending the Oak-Tree Kindergartens rather than a local nursery?

One of the biggest benefits of an Oak-Tree Kindergarten is the smaller class sizes. Uniqueness can be celebrated, and the individual needs of each and every pupil are considered. Classes also benefit from having qualified teaching assistants to support each class. This is hugely important at this stage in their lives when children are developing rapidly.

The schools aim to provide a structured educational environment, where the children are encouraged to learn through play. Additionally, specialist subject teachers enrich the children’s experiences with other activities such as sports, music, dance, and computing.

Pupils have access to a huge range of resources across the school site, such as the school libraries, computer suites, and banks of iPads. The Group also has a fleet of minibuses that open up the wider world exponentially, allowing regular visits to the farm, museums, trampoline parks, and the zoo, helping to broaden young minds.

Q: Will starting at Kindergarten provide automatic entrance to Reception and beyond?

Starting in Kindergarten will help parents secure a place for their child in Reception, saving them from having to go for further assessments and interview processes at aged 4. It is therefore hardly surprising that many pupils see the school and their teachers almost as a second family throughout their educational journey.

Q: What positive feedback have you had recently about the individual schools?

At Braeside the Kindergarten and Reception children benefit from a spacious, covered, outdoor area that formed part of a recent extensive programme of improvements. The dedicated outside area enables learning to take place effectively both inside and outside the classroom. The Early Years has flourished in recent years with the introduction of boys as part of the school’s move to co-education, and our new pupils have settled in seamlessly. Coopersale Hall’s Kindergartens have purpose-built large classrooms and extensive grounds with play equipment for the younger children. As is all the Oak-Tree Schools, the wrap-around care is very popular with parents looking to balance work and children’s school lives. We believe that with the new introduction of senior pupils in September, our youngest children will benefit greatly from having such positive older role models from which to learn.

At Normanhurst, feedback has been excellent about children continuing their educational journey from Kindergarten up through the school to age 16, as staff and pupils at all levels have outstanding relationships that help with the children’s personal development. Parents particularly love the Friday ‘Welly Walks’ to Epping Forest where our pupils enjoy learning outside of the classroom.

Current and prospective parents at Oaklands are very positive about the flexible sessions in Kindergarten. Like with all schools in the Oak-Tree Group, parents are able to choose the sessions their child attends. Parents have also commented on the seamless transition from Early Years to Reception for current pupils, especially as the Reception classes fill up so quickly, leaving relatively few places for new entrants. Parents enjoy that they can form relationships with staff from the very earliest opportunity, which develops trust and open dialogues as the children continue through the school.

Contact the schools directly to arrange a personalised tour. Open Mornings will be held in October. For more information visit www. oaktreeschools.co.uk

The Canopy Chigwell

Chaser/quiz master Shaun Wallace (The Dark Destroyer), celebrates the launch of a new retirement development in leafy Chigwell

Alaunch event at The Canopy, a brand new development of 25 luxury apartments for the over-55s, will bring together potential residents, the local community, and quiz-master Shaun Wallace from the ITV show The Chase.

Located in the village of Chigwell, The Canopy is set in its own woodland and is the perfect balance between bustling convenience and leafy retreat. The large communal roof terrace is a perfect spot to enjoy views over the development’s green and leafy landscape and further afield.

Interested buyers, their families, and local residents are being invited by Cognatum to a Champagne launch event that will feature a quiz hosted by ‘Chaser’ Shaun Wallace. Guests will be split into teams with each member of the winning team receiving an individual prize. Prior to and following the quiz there will be plenty of opportunity for guests to mingle with each other whilst enjoying drinks and canapes both provided by local retailers. Weather permitting, the event will be held on The Canopy’s spectacular roof terrace.

John Lavin of Cognatum says, “The dip-in dip-out nature of a community of like-minded people is popular with later-life buyers. This event is designed to demonstrate how inclusive and sociable The Canopy is. There’s a selection of comfortable lounges and communal spaces, and a furnished upper terrace amongst the trees, that make it easy for residents and guests to get together for a chat, a game of backgammon or cards, or to read the paper in companionable peace. If owners wish there will also be a wide range of more organised events that will encourage mingling and socialising. But the lifestyle on offer

13 July ’23, 5pm – 8.00pm

also recognises that today’s retirers also value independence and privacy, or may wish to lock and leave to pursue other interest and travel.”

The evening starts at 5pm with drinks and canapes and a chance to have an informal tour around the development. The quiz will commence at 6.15pm and run for an hour, with more socialising after the winners have been announced, prizes given and everyone has had a chance to have their photograph taken with Shaun Wallace. Guests must be over 55; they are welcome to bring up to two guests who aren’t required to meet the age criteria, but who must be over 18.

V&A exhibition celebrates ‘ DIVA POWER’ with fashion from Rihanna, Tina Turner and Marilyn Monroe

Museum curator Kate Bailey explains the story behind the dazzling new show. By Katie Wright.

Bringing together outfits worn by music and movie stars throughout history, the new Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) exhibition Diva aims to reclaim a term that’s taken on negative connotations in recent years.

Showcasing more than 250 items, the show includes garments seen on Rihanna, Beyonce, Cher, Tina Turner, Elton John and Marilyn Monroe.

Visitors are given a headset to wear during their visit which automatically plays a soundtrack or song associated with the era or artist they’re looking at.

“The starting point was curiosity,” says curator Kate Bailey.

“I was really fascinated about the term diva… And questioning why this term had become so negative, but also how it’s been embraced and used across different genres.”

Split into three acts spread over two floors, the exhibition traces the chronology of divas, starting from the 19th century with legendary opera singers such as Jenny Lind and Maria Callas.

“The origin of the term is goddess, and I think that got lost over time,” Bailey explains.

26 JULY 2023 OUT & ABOUT

“It’s these artists with a strong sense of self who are boundary-pushers, who are trailblazers, who know where they are, where they’re going to, and who use their voice and their platform to create this extraordinary legacy.”

Long before celebrities and designers began attempting to outdo each other with their extravagant Met Gala ensembles, audiences have been poring over the fashion choices of entertainers.

“Even from the early prima donnas in the 19th century, their image, their identity, how they dressed, what they wore on stage [and] their offstage lives were always fascinating,” says Bailey.

“So I think you can’t separate the costume and fashion from the diva and their voice.”

As well as delving into the V&A archive –selecting, for example, Marilyn Monroe’s black dress from Some Like It Hot – Bailey was tasked with gathering garments from the private collections of global megastars such as Adele, Lizzo, Pink and Dame Shirley Bassey.

“We’re dealing with a lot of people who are extraordinarily busy,” she says of the curation process.

She believes what helped convince A-listers to lend their precious clothing was the exhibition “reclaiming the term [diva] and being able to have an opportunity to create this sort of Valhalla of creativity and women and icons and divas and beyond gender”.

Rihanna was “very, very generous” to loan five internet-breaking looks, including the papalinspired gown and hat she wore to the Catholicthemed 2018 Met Gala and the crystal-embellished blush pink gown worn to the 2014 CFDA Awards.

“That Adam Selman look with the 200,000 Swarovski crystals was such a moment where that image went ‘boom’ on Instagram,” Bailey says.

“It’s a remarkable thing for people to be able to see that up close – and something like the pope look as well, which became such a sensation, and it looks even more remarkable in real life.”

A series of sequinned and feathered costumes created by legendary designer Bob Mackie for Cher and Tina Turner took on even greater meaning when Turner died in May this year, while the exhibition was being staged.

“We were mounting those looks when she passed,” Bailey says, explaining that the singer –who was reportedly abused by husband Ike Turner

–is an “important part” of the diva narrative.

“She had such a difficult time – she got through it. Bob Mackie, with his designs, gave her that power to own the stage.

“When you put the headphones on I think it’s quite moving because you can stand there, look at the ‘flame dress’ and you’re listening to [1988 hit] The Best.”

She hopes visitors will enjoy the spectacular fashion and empowering message behind the glamour.

“I want them to look to think about the diva over time to think about the struggles… The relationship with patriarchy, how and why it became associated with negativity.”

Plus, they’re treated to incredible music from start to finish.

“There’s a very deliberate choice of exit track, which is Diana Ross’ I’m Coming Out,” Bailey says.

“We need a bit of joy and feathers and fun, as well as that sense of diva power.”

WESTMINSTER SECURITY ALWAYS ON GUARD

Summer has arrived as has the surge in home burglaries. Statistically, you are more likely to become a victim of burglary in the summer. The importance of residential security in London and the home counties is more important now than ever, particularly for high-net-worth individuals who are concerned about protecting their families and assets. With the ever-increasing crime rates and a vast increase in targeted, often violent high-value burglaries and street robberies, it is crucial for homeowners to take proactive steps to enhance their personal and property security.

One of the most effective ways to improve home security is to make your property less appealing to criminals by investing in technical and physical security, such as CCTV, alarms, and lighting. Also, fences, gates, windows, and doors. A 24/7 security guard presence or residential security team is advised should your profile, status, threat, and risk require such measures. This is an essential requirement for high-profile business leaders, celebrities, political and royal stock. Should the threat and risk of burglary be enhanced due to your career or company, it’s reassuring to know that private security is a tax-deductible business expense.

In addition to these often-expensive solutions, there are several simple steps that everyone can

take to enhance their security. These include making sure you lock doors and gates, close windows when you go out, keep your car keys out of site, and don’t leave ladders or garden equipment out that could be used to gain entry to your home. It is also important to be aware of the latest trends in criminal activity, such as the use of social media to identify potential targets and take steps to protect against these threats. Ultimately, the key to effective home security is a combination of technological solutions, physical measures, and manned guarding. By taking proactive steps to protect their homes and assets, homeowners can help to ensure the safety and security of their families and possessions for the peace of mind that comes with good security awareness and measures.

What you eat – and when – could be impacting your slumber.

Foods that could help you get better sleep

Wondering whether certain foods can affect your sleep patterns – or if eating certain things could actually help improve your sleep?

The relationship between diet, sleep and overall health is two-sided, says Gabi Zaromskyte, registered nutritionist and founder of Honestly Nutrition. “Meaning what we eat and drink affects our sleep, but also, the quality and duration of sleep can affect our food choices,” Zaromskyte explains.“Scientific research has increasingly shed light on the significant impact of dietary choices on cognitive function, mood, and overall physical and mental health,” she adds.

Certain dietary patterns and specific nutrients have been found to influence the sleep-wake cycle, sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep), and sleep architecture (the different stages of sleep), notes Zaromskyte.

She continues: “And the quality and timing of our food and beverage intake can impact the production of sleep-regulating hormones, such as melatonin, which plays a critical role in regulating our sleep-wake cycle.”

However, as Dr Maja Schaedel, co-founder of The Good Sleep Clinic points out, it’s important to understand that most research done so far shows that even though certain foods may be higher in melatonin, that does not necessary equate to falling asleep quicker.

“You may have higher levels of melatonin, but if you’ve got stuck in a bad habit of tossing and turning for two hours before drifting off, or waking at 3am and not being able to return to sleep, foods high in melatonin are not going to solve your problem,” says Schaedel.

She suggests that generally, it’s best to eat your evening meal at least two hours before bed, to avoid any indigestion, spikes in blood sugar and increase in body temperature that can occur while digesting.

“If you tend to get peckish later in the evening,

then plan a snack an hour or two before bed,” Schaedel adds. “It’s best to have something high in protein, like Greek yoghurt or nuts, and low in complex carbohydrates to avoid any spikes and falls in blood sugar.”

Also, it might be wise to avoid the usual culprits which can trigger discomfort. “Fatty and spicy foods can cause heartburn and indigestion which can hinder good sleep, as well as alcohol, caffeine and tobacco,” says Lisa Artis, deputy CEO of The Sleep Charity.

FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY 54 JULY 2023
Gabi Zaromskyte, registered nutritionist and founder of Honestly Nutrition, profile.

Cheese

“Cheese gets a bad reputation as it’s commonly believed to give us nightmares, but actually it’s the opposite,” says Artis. “Cheese, and other dairy products, contain tryptophan, an amino acid which helps us to nod off more easily, and calcium which helps to reduce stress.”

Cherries

To find out if foods with naturally occurring melatonin make a difference for you, Artis suggests giving cherries a go – particularly tart cherries, which have been found to naturally boost the production of melatonin. Zaromskyte says several studies have shown significant improvements in sleep quality and duration when consuming Montmorency cherries or tart cherry juice, where the concentration of naturally occurring melatonin and phytochemicals is higher compared to whole cherries.

Low sugar cereals

“Cereal can also help us to sleep – but we must be mindful of the type of cereal,” says Artis. “There

are lots of sugary options on the market, so try to avoid these.”

She says complex carbohydrate-rich foods increase the availability of tryptophan in the bloodstream which, in turn, may help us to nod off.

Bananas

Bananas are an excellent source of magnesium, potassium and tryptophan, says Artis. In other words, a great choice when it comes to supporting sleep. “While bananas have lots of great qualities for sleep, all fruit contains sugar too, so be mindful of this in the run up to bedtime,” she notes. “Try blending one banana with one cup of milk or soya milk to make an ideal evening drink.”

Almonds

“Almonds are a brilliant source of calcium and magnesium, which promotes both sleep and muscle relaxation,” says Artis. “Magnesium also helps to regulate melatonin levels and keep blood sugar levels stable overnight.”

Magnesium rich foods

Magnesium, an essential mineral, has been found to play a crucial role in sleep regulation – and can influence sleep quality and duration, says Zaromskyte. “It acts as a co-factor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, including those involved in the production and regulation of neurotransmitters and hormones that impact sleep.” Some magnesium-rich foods cited to help improve sleep quality include pumpkin seeds, spinach, almonds and dark chocolate (which is packed with health-enhancing antioxidants too).

Omega-3 rich foods

Although research is limited, some evidence suggests foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may promote better, longer sleep, says Zaromskyte. “For example, walnuts are a source of melatonin and other sleep-regulating compounds, such as an amino acid tryptophan and omega-3 fatty acids,” she says. “Other omega-3-rich foods include oily fish, like salmon, trout, mackerel and sardines, chia seeds and flaxseeds.”

Bringing Your Vision TO LIFE

As a young yet highly experienced firm, Blackberry Build is built on a foundation of outstanding artistry, unparalleled design skills and an ongoing commitment to premium quality.

At a very young age I wondered what my purpose in this life was. I worked various jobs, which I would start with excitement, but as soon as I had mastered them, I would start seeking a new challenge. I craved constant learning and growth and wanted to push myself forward. I could not agree more with the quotes – ‘Never tolerate average’ or ‘Impossible is a state of mind’. I started my career in the construction industry 22 years ago, right at the bottom, as a bricklayer’s labourer and worked my way up. Within five years, I was put in charge of a small crew. The following 12 years took a lot of hard work, courage and effort and were very challenging but successful. From a site supervisor, I became a project director picking up a BA (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering, NVQ Level 7 in Construction Management, Membership of a Chartered Institute of Building and other qualifications.

NEW HOMES PROJECTS

My main and most enjoyable projects were marketing suites and show apartments for such industry giants as St George and Berkeley Homes.

As these projects were the developer’s flagships and showpieces for the quality of design and workmanship, they had to be completed to an immaculate level, and that is what I enjoyed most! After doing this for almost seven years, I had a huge hunger for a new challenge. I had tons of experience, knowledge, determination, and a massive will to create something unique. This is where Blackberry Build was born. It went through the stages and evolved into a unique project delivery company like no other. Now I’m glad to say that I’m thrilled with what I do as my ‘work’. It’s crazy; I like it so much I don’t even call it a ‘job’. I just enjoy it too much.”

Indoor summer dining... LA DOLCE VITA LIVING

Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor, Dee Fontenot, shares her expert tips to create a sun-kissed indoor space that captures the essence of the Amalfi coast - the ultimate backdrop for summer soirees...

Channel the spirit of Italian summer by bringing the outside in when styling up an indoor tablescape. Statement vases filled with garden-cut blooms will bring a little magic to your table and can be integrated easily and affordably. Use a range of vessels in staggered heights and a medley of different florals, from blousy roses to bright tulips for a bold look.

Filling a carafe with fresh fruit and herbs is an easy way to bring both a sense of finesse and a dash of colour to your table. Forgo traditional lemon slices in favour of zesty pink grapefruit and sicilian oranges, adding a few sprigs of mint for an easy aromatic addition that will look good and taste delicious!

Don’t worry about matching your tableware. An eclectic mix of plates, napkins and coloured glasses will make your table feel approachable as well as stylish. Relaxed Mediterranean hosting is all about the ‘artfully undone’ look.

Think of your summer tablescape in the same way that you would your interior, choosing a small handful of recurring colours running throughout. If you’re looking to channel destination style, add a few hot accent shades - think look-at-me pink, bold cobalt or sunny yellow.

For a true Italian holiday feel, make sure that refreshing tipples are easily at hand. A stylish serving trolley with spritz aplenty will be a welcome addition to any dinner party, as well as a show-stopping talking point.

Feeling adventurous? Switch out traditional wall art for a touch of drama with a platescaping display. Opt for a variety of sizes, but stick to a distinctive colour palette for a cohesive look. Patterned melamine plates will look just as authentic as vintage finds but will be lighter and kinder to your walls. wayfair.co.uk

Ways to use texture in your kitchen 5

Textured materials are one of the hottest trends in kitchen design right now so we spoke to local kitchen design company Urban Myth to ask how you can incorporate this popular style into your home.

Designing your perfect kitchen involves making a range of decisions regarding the style, colour and design of the kitchen and one key design choice is the role of texture, we asked Senior designer at Urban Myth Marzena Moks Rodrigues why texture is so important.

“Kitchen design is all about layering, creating the perfect style is always a mix of materials even if the overall look is one colour, it is then that texture becomes even more important” She goes on to say “Textured materials add warmth, personality and interest to a design and create cohesion between rooms”

72 JULY 2023 HOUSE & GARDEN
“Industrial finishes are increasingly popular and none more so than concrete”

To help you realise how to include texture in your home here are Marzena’s 5 ways to add texture to your kitchen design.

Textured Cabinets

Adding textured door fronts to your cabinets can give your design an unique look that will really stand out. Stone or wood veneer are great options which are durable and easy to keep clean.

Metallics

Soft and reflective metallics such as copper and bronze or natural tones such as brown on green are popular at the moment . Achieving this look in your kitchen can be done in two ways. For a more subtle approach you can accessorise this trend with door handles, taps, or sinks. Or if you’re fully committed then there are some fabulous kitchen cabinets available with metallic patinas that will truly make your kitchen unique.

Concrete

Industrial finishes are increasingly popular and none more so than concrete. Previously it would be a difficult process to achieve a real concrete finish, but with advances in material technology, manufacturers have created several options available in Quartz or Solid surface to get this look.

Textured backsplash

The backsplash is an integral part of your kitchen design, and a great place to layer texture. Tiles are a fantastic way to do this and can contrast and complement your design. We also see many customers running the worktop material all the way up the wall, this gives the illusion of more space and also shows off your choice of worktop.

Statement Wall

If you’d prefer to make a bit of a splash with texture in your kitchen, consider a statement wall. Easy to undo if you decide to make a change in future, but large enough to make a significant impact to your interior, statement walls are a wonderful place to experiment with texture..

If you’re renovating your kitchen this year, visit www.urbanmyth.net for more design inspiration or book an Urban Myth showroom appointment by calling 0208 531 3413.

THE BEST HOUSEPLANTS TO BOOST YOUR WELLBEING

It’s no surprise plants can cheer us up in the winter months.

New research by Dobbies Garden Centres (dobbies.com) has backed this up, finding 40% of those surveyed believe colourful houseplants make them feel happier.

But they don’t just lift your mood. The NASA Clean Air study found that many houseplants can clean the air of toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, xylene and ammonia, says podcaster and garden expert Ellen Mary, who recently launched People Plants Wellbeing (peopleplantswellbeing.com), a new nature-based wellbeing consultancy.

“The more plants the merrier, as long as you have the time and space to care for them,” says Mary. “To clean the air you can have fewer plants if they have larger foliage, as they can be more efficient at reducing toxins.”

She continues: “Studies into the wellbeing benefits of houseplant ownership showed that even just being in the presence of indoor plants can improve wellbeing, so not just softening aesthetics but also feeling a connection to the natural world. For those working in rooms with plants, they performed better on cognitive tasks and lower levels of physiological stress.”

According to the RHS, studies indicate that indoor plants can lead to increased worker productivity and increased pain tolerance, for example, where plants were used in hospital settings.

Air purifying

“The spathiphyllum, or peace lily, is a great choice for beginner and seasoned plant parents alike, and will thrive in a bright spot out of direct sunlight. This striking plant should be watered weekly, or when its soil feels dry to the touch,” says Claire Bishop, head of houseplants at Dobbies Garden Centres (dobbies.com).

“If your plant isn’t flowering, water it, feed it and move it to a brighter spot for a beautiful addition to your home that will not only brighten up your interiors but also your mood.”

Mary recommends pothos, an easy-to-grow bushy specimen which thrives on low light and neglect, and purifies the air of toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide. It also helps to eliminate odours and is said to relieve tired screen eyes, she notes.

Hedera helix (English ivy) is also a good air purifier – it grows in partial shade and is a low-care plant, and its long vines make it great for shelves and mantelpieces.

Green space

“If you’re looking to give your home a boost of greenery without spending a fortune, smaller plants and ferns are a fantastic option. Adiantum

(maidenhair fern), nephrolepis (sword fern) and phlebodium fern varieties are all typically low cost and will elevate any room in your home,” Bishop suggests.

“The Dypsis lutescens is another wonderful choice and comes in a variety of sizes, making it ideal for homes of all styles and will instantly improve any space.”

Wellbeing wonders

Bishop calls houseplants “great additions to your home office, to perk up your working environment and make you more productive.

“If caring for houseplants isn’t your forte but you still want to feel the benefits of them, consider a sansevieria (snake plant). These quirky plants can go without water for up to a month so require very little attention, making them perfect for those just starting their plant journey.”

Bathroom boosters

“To promote wellness in your bathroom and give this space a zen look and feel, use houseplants to create a spa-like vibe,” says Bishop. “Ferns, with their air purifying qualities, thrive in a humid environment, making them ideal for your bathroom.

“Plant your ferns in soil with good drainage and keep them moist with weekly mistings. If your fern is looking dehydrated, you can plunge it into a sink or bucket of water to bring it back to life. Simply submerge your pot into the water and then remove it, letting it drain completely before placing it back into a bright spot.”

Bedroom calm

Mary recommends orchids for the bedroom, which hold symbolism of positive energy prosperity and growth and can improve sleep, promote relaxation and enhance feelings of calmness and peace, she says. They also don’t need much watering and can flower for long periods and reflower after resting. Another good choice for the bedroom is sansevieria, which thrives in low light, photosynthesizes even at night and is easy to grow, she recommends.

Positive energy

The money plant (Crassula ovata/Jade plant) exudes positive energy, says Mary, and is thought to bring good luck, growth, prosperity and wealth, while also releasing a lot of oxygen.

GET YOUR HOME AND GARDEN READY FOR SUMMER

With warmer days ahead and the big Spring Clean behind us, there are still some extra yet easy steps to get your home and garden summer ready with the help of Ecozone. The British brand creates effective, ecoconscious home cleaning products. Since 2000, Ecozone has been committed to innovating formulas that work hard and do good—making everyday cleaner, easier, and better for all and providing a planet conscious clean. So read on to discover some tips and tricks to prepare your home this season…

Give your home exterior a touch-up. Summer weather makes it much easier to tackle outside maintenance, from paint jobs to other fixes, but it’s also a good idea to wash down the dirt and pollution accumulated on surfaces before doing so. Opting for an eco-conscious cleaner like Ecozone’s Multi-Purpose Cleaning Paste lets you easily clean various surfaces.

Give your BBQ a deep clean. Barbecues should always be cleaned after use. However, most will likely not have been used for a

while, so it’s wise to deep clean them before their next use. To clear any burnt-on grease and grime, and when wanting to use eco-conscious products, a good tip is to use a grease-busting Washing Up Liquid or Kitchen Cleaner Spray formulated for degreasing, such as those from Ecozone. These products are perfect for giving a barbecue a once over and bringing it back to its former glory, ready for your summer parties.

Revamp your garden furniture. Again, an excellent tip for sprucing garden furniture is to wipe it down with warm soapy water. Or for tougher marks and dirt Ecozone’s Magic Stain Eraser works wonders to banish various stains from virtually any surface. All you need to do is activate it with water, so there’s no need for toxic cleaning agents, which is great if you’re conscious of what some chemicals can do to plant or animal life found in the garden. With over 80 products in the range across laundry, cleaning, solutions and more, you can explore an abundance of highly effective cleaning essentials that provide first-class results with minimal effort.
