Each week of the school holidays there will be adventures and activities for children to enjoy, starting with Discoveries and Inventions from Monday 27 – Friday 31 July, which will take visitors through history’s most exciting inventions; followed by Ugly Bug Safari on Monday 3 – Friday 7 August where children can grab magnifying glasses and join the big hunt for some mini beasts and a discovery of a bug’s life. A chance to impress royalty arrives Monday 10 – Friday 14 August, at the popular Kings and Queens event. Children will uncover the crucial curtsey, bow like a pro and be able to amuse without being a fool. Then they have the opportunity to play like a Georgian, from battledores to shuttlecocks at Georgian Games Galore commencing Monday 17- Friday 21 August. The summer blockbuster event takes place on the August bank holiday Sunday 30 – Monday 31 August. World War II: Soldiers & Spies is an explosive action packed weekend driving visitors into wartime Britain, from the trooper of the D-Day landings to the kitchen maid dishing out meagre wartime rations, this remarkable event will show life of the battlefield to the lifestyle of the home-front. Closing the summer season is Apple Festival on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September. From bobbing and weaving to tasting and trapping, apples have never been so tempting. Visitors can taste the delicious treats in the tea room and see how the Victorians would have cooked a Pink Lady or a Granny Smith in the service wing. Guests can even get hands on in the walled garden with archery and pottery. ■

OAK-TREE SCHOOLS
ARE TOP GRADE
A
s another academic year closes The Oak-Tree Group of Schools is reflecting on its students’ many successes with the majority of pupils who have come reached their leaving ages receiving offers to join their first choice schools or colleges. Group Managing Principal Matthew Hagger commented, “This has been such a successful year and most of our pupils have been spoilt for choice. At Oaklands and Coopersale Hall, both independent preparatory schools, we had 86 offers made to our 36 Year 6 pupils for a wide variety of selective and non-selective senior schools. In addition, our Normanhurst Year 11s have achieved a record number of offers to independent and state Sixth Forms, as well as to many local colleges”. Oaklands Headmistress Cheryl Macnair is delighted by the students’ success; “I’m very proud of our pupils once again this year with more than ever before being offered their first choice of senior school. Not all schools are right for every pupil so it is important that a child attends the school most suited to their needs. We work very closely with parents to ensure this is achieved, leading to a smooth transition to the next stage of their education.” Kaye Lovejoy, Headmistress of Coopersale Hall School, believes that the school’s 11+ preparation programme is very rigorous; “Alongside our tailor-made curriculum, intensive preparation includes practice papers in English 1 8 J U LY 2 0 1 5
and Maths, mock interviews and individual parents’ evenings. The results illustrate how hard our pupils have worked this year with 3 scholarships being offered in addition to all of the other offers.” Normanhurst caters for children aged 2½ to 16. Headmistress Claire Osborn is thrilled with the students’ achievements this year; “Our staff and pupils have worked extremely hard throughout the year to prepare for the GCSEs, and the predicted results are very impressive. Our pupils show maturity, commitment to school life and a high level of respect for one another and for the staff, so I am not surprised that they are being selected to join some excellent schools and colleges as they move into A-Levels.” This year has also seen the trend continue for more and more pupils to transfer from Oaklands or Coopersale Hall to Normanhurst at 11+ to continue their education within the Group. These parents have expressed their desire to see their children continue to be educated within a strong group of schools. Normanhurst’s GCSE results were excellent last year with 82% of pupils gaining 5 or more A* to C grade passes and over half of all grades at A*, A or B – despite the nationally reported marking and grading problems. ■

This is the reality that thousands of families across London and the Home Counties have to face every year. Haven House Children’s Hospice knows how difficult it is to be told that your child has a life-limiting or life-threatening condition as we have provided care and support for over 500 such families across North and East London, West Essex and East Hertfordshire since we opened in 2003. By combining specialist nursing care for seriously ill children with help for the wider family, Haven House delivers a sense of support and trust, and, most importantly, can ease the burden of care. The services at Haven House include planned respite and end of life care for children whose needs are complex.

THERE IS FURTHER ASSISTANCE FOR THE FAMILY INCLUDING: • Toy home loan • Therapeutic yoga • A community play specialist • Music therapy • Coffee mornings for parents/carers • Support group for siblings • Pre-school children day care • Complementary therapies • One-to-one and group counselling Every year it costs over £2.5 million to fully resource the hospice, of which we need to raise 70% from voluntary sources. ■

WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS
SUMMER HOLIDAYS AND SECURITY S ummer has at last arrived. The weather is fantastic and there is a sense of winding down and into the holiday period. We all look forward to the annual highlight of a trip abroad, perhaps a family treat to Florida or somewhere exotic like Vietnam or Thailand. Although it’s so tempting to just let it all go and get into holiday mood, it’s worth just spending a few minutes, to put some precautions into place to avoid any potential and annoying problems. A photocopy of all passports. Worth leaving them in the hotel’s safety deposit box/room safe. If a passport is lost or stolen, having a photocopy makes the follow-up administration process a lot easier. Nobody wants to spend their holiday in an Embassy going through red tape. Also and apologies if this seems obvious, double-check passport expiration dates. Preferably a month (minimum of two weeks) before going away. Give a family member or friend all your contact details. Hotel, address, telephone number, flight and insurance details. Just in case there is any medical problem whilst abroad, somebody else can begin to sort out the process from home. Social Media. It’s great to stay in contact with family and friends but posting your holiday dates online (especially in advance) could be a signal to the more dubious members of society that nobody’s at home! Rather like party details posted on Facebook and hundreds of gate
2 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5
crashers. When anything goes online, it is very difficult to totally control who has access to your posts, despite continually improved security processes. Luggage labels. They seem innocent enough but there are professional gangs who operate at airports. They look at luggage labels for your address and know your property is empty, especially if they see a family. Modern luggage labels have a flap to cover the address or are enclosed within a sleeve. Tell your credit card company where you are going. If you’re shopping in Waitrose Buckhurst Hill on Wednesday, then using your card in Walmart in Florida on Friday – their alarms will be triggered and potentially your card could be blocked. Nobody wants their shopping thwarted by a technicality. Going on holiday is a family highlight and very special time, so let’s all enjoy.
Here’s to plenty of sunshine and happy holidays… ■

Proms heralds record-breaking ticket sales 17TH JULY – 12TH SEPTEMBER 2015
A
mong the most popular Proms, according to early bookings, are a concert of works by US composer and pianist Leonard Bernstein, whose musical scores included West Side Story, Yo-Yo Ma’s Late Night performance of Bach’s complete cello suites and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius with Sir Simon Rattle conducting. Marin Alsop will return to conduct the Last Night of the Proms, after her 2013 debut. Other leading conductors include Daniel Barenboim, Thomas Dausgaard, Andris Nelsons and Sakari Oramo. Soloists include Alison Balsom, Nicola Benedetti, Alice Coote, Nikolai Lugansky, Mitsuko Uchida and Roderick Williams. This year’s BBC Proms will also feature concerts inspired by Sherlock Holmes - featuring music mentioned in Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, as well as scores written for TV shows and films about the super-sleuth - including the current BBC TV series starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Mark Gatiss, the show’s co-creator, who also plays Holmes’ brother Mycroft, will read passages from the original adventures. The John Wilson Orchestra will mark the 100th birthday year of Frank Sinatra with Hollywood’s Seth MacFarlane singing onstage, as well as celebrating Leonard Bernstein’s music for stage and screen. In one of a series of late night Proms, Radio 1 presenter Pete Tong celebrates 20 years of the Ibiza dance scene in a concert with Jules Buckley and the Heritage Orchestra. Edward Blakeman, this year’s Proms director, said there would be a “big focus” on piano works with more than 25 solo pianists featuring across the season. The complete Beethoven piano concertos will be performed by Leif Ove Andsnes, while
2 6 J U LY 2 0 1 5
Prokofiev’s five piano concertos will played at a single prom. Six of Mozart’s late piano concertos also feature. For the first time at the Proms, a series of Sunday matinees are being introduced aimed at families. They include concerts celebrating the first year of Ten Pieces, the BBC’s classical music initiative for primary schools. Hosted by Barney Harwood and Dick and Dom, they will be broadcast later in the year on CBBC. James Ainscough, who looks after event venue the Royal Albert Hall, said the popularity of the season came as “no surprise”, citing the broad programme which encompasses large-scale choral works, a Prom featuring Sir David Attenborough’s Life Story, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, pop star Jarvis Cocker and Welsh bassbaritone Bryn Terfel. However, he stressed that tickets remained available for most events, while £5 Promming tickets would still be available on the day. “The Proms has always been about bringing the very best music to the widest number of people,” said Mr Ainscough. “We look forward to hosting a wonderful summer of inspirational performances on the world’s most famous stage.” Alan Davey, controller of BBC Radio 3, said: “As always, BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting every Prom live in 2015, and alongside our partners in television and online, we’re delighted to continue bringing the best classical music in the world to millions of music lovers across the UK.” THE DETAILS To book tickets, call the Royal Albert Hall Box Office on 0845 401 5040* (open 9.00am–9.00pm daily). HEALTH & BEAUTY
HAYFEVER HELL H ay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, affects one in five people in the UK. According to John Collard, clinical director of Allergy UK, hay fever is a type of allergy. It happens when your body makesantibodies in response to certain triggers, such as pollen. It’s most common in children and, particularly, teenagers, but you can develop hay fever at any age. The symptoms usually include sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and stuffy nose. WHAT CAUSES HAY FEVER? In Britain, hay fever is mainly caused by grass pollen. Around 95% of hay fever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen. Tree pollen can cause hay fever too. Around a quarter of hay fever sufferers are allergic to tree pollen. Mould spores and weed pollen can also trigger symptoms. The pollens that cause hay fever vary from person to person and region to region. The amount of pollen in the air will affect how bad your hay fever is. There’s more likely to be more pollen in the air on hot, dry, windy days than on cool, damp, rainy days. Research shows that pollution, such as cigarette smoke or car exhaust fumes, also makes some allergies worse. WHEN IS HAY FEVER WORST? The time of year at which you begin to experience hay fever symptoms depends on the types of pollen you’re allergic to. Trees release their pollen in March to early May while grasses release pollen from late May to early August. Weeds and certain shrubs release their pollen in late summer. The hay fever season can therefore last from March to October. And if you’re unlucky enough to be allergic to more than one type of pollen, you may only have just two or three monthswithout symptoms in the winter before the cycle starts again. TIPS TO RELIEVE HAY FEVER • Avoiding exposure to pollen is the best way to reduce the allergic symptoms of hay fever: • Keep windows shut at night and first thing in the morning • Stay indoors when the pollen count is high (between 50 and 150) • Wear wraparound sunglasses. • Put some petroleum jelly just inside your nostrils to trap some of the pollen. • Don’t mow the grass or sit in fields or large areas of grass. • Wash your hands and face regularly. • Avoid exposure to other allergens, such as pet fur, or environmental irritants, such as insect sprays or tobacco smoke. HAY FEVER TREATMENT As with most allergies, the best way to control hay fever is to avoid the triggers. However, it’s difficult to avoid pollen, particularly during the summer. Even straightforward hay fever can be debilitating, causing runny eyes, sleepless nights, bunged-up nose and headaches. A range of over-thecounterproducts can treat the symptoms of hay fever, including tablets, nasal sprays, eye drops and creams. Antihistamines are the usual treatment for the main symptoms, such as itchy, watery eyes and runny nose, while steroid nasal sprays are the main treatment for a stuffy nose. HAY FEVER AND ASTHMA Speak to your GP or pharmacist before you decide on a hay fever treatment. It’s particularly important to speak to your GP if you have asthma. Hay fever often makes asthma symptoms worse. If this happens, you may need to increase the dosage of your asthma medication. ■

STRAIGHTEN UP YOUR SOFA TIME
A
t the end of a busy day, or even first thing on a Sunday morning, the sofa can seem an inviting place. While some seats are merely practical, sofas are all about comfort and relaxation, right? Somewhere to slouch in front of your favourite TV show, or curl up with a good book. Don't forget about your posture, though. We all know that sitting up straight is important when we're sitting at a desk - and sofas are no different. So show your spine some settee TLC, with these simple tips‌ DON'T SLUMP If you sit slouched, or slightly hunched over, you're likely to be piling the pressure on your lower back as it has to cope with the weight of your upper body. You'll need to strengthen your core and buttock muscles. MAKE SURE YOUR LOWER BACK IS SUPPORTED If there's a big gap between your lower back and the chair you're sitting on, you may need to make some adjustments (and this is something you should also keep an eye on if your job is a desk-bound one). Try and make sure your knees are level with your hips by adjusting your seat, or find yourself a foot rest. PLANT YOUR FEET FLAT ON THE FLOOR It's highly tempting to cross your legs nonchalantly, like that posh couple on Gogglebox, when you're watching TV (particularly if you have a glass of G&T in your hand). But this can put pressure on your lower back over time. So try and keep your feet on the floor and resist the urge to cross them or tuck them under you. 3 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5
AVOID 'TEXT NECK' Many of us go from spending our nine to five bent over a computer keyboard to whiling away the evening hunched over a phone or tablet. In fact, smartphone users now spend an average of two to four hours a day with their heads lowered. This can lead to that all too common feeling of being stiff and sore around your upper back, shoulder blades and neck. Save yourself a fortune on pricey massages and try lengthening your neck as you tuck in your chin as an exercise. Alternatively, why not go old school and give someone a call instead of texting them? DON'T GET STUCK IN A RUT When there's a particularly gripping TV show on, it can be easy to develop the kind of rigor mortis seen in a Silent Witness corpse. But try and move around a bit to boost blood circulation. Shift position every half hour or so, or get up and walk around - even if it's just over to the kettle and back. GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED Working on your posture takes time and effort - it feels a lot comfier lounging under your blanket than sitting up straight. Why not get your partner, kids or friends on board for the posture crusade? When one of you looks at risk of slumping like a soggy-bottomed cake on Bake Off, give each other a gentle nudge. Your backs will thank you for it. â–

INTERVIEW WITH
BEN COHEN WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS
A
s we all begin to enjoy the summer, whether going out, playing sport or gardening, invariably, it is worth having an osteopath’s business card in our purse/wallet, sports bag, and tool kit. Backs are a fragile thing and when we least expect it, we can find ourselves stuck in an awkward position and unable to imagine walking/running/gardening ever again. So to ensure I’m always prepared, I conducted some research and found Ben Cohen to be helpful, talented and also very kind. Michelle: So what inspired you to become an osteopath? Ben: During my voluntary work with people aged 70-102, I became aware of the extent that pain impacted upon their lives; and how their quality of life and ability to perform daily activities had become affected. It was from this experience that I decided to pursue a career in healthcare. My ethos is that every patient's problem is unique and therefore requires a specific, tailor-made treatment plan. Michelle: Are your patients local? Is there a trend for a particular problem? Ben: Most patients come from within a 10 mile radius, although I do have patients from further afield. Whilst the most common problem is low back pain, patients also present with arthritic pain, golfers'/tennis elbow, headaches and posture related 3 6 J U LY 2 0 1 5
neck and back pain. Patients have included doctors, actors, police officers, ex-footballers and an elite athlete. Michelle: I notice that you have treated a lot of sportsmen and women. Do you offer specific sports therapies? Ben: Yes. Sports massage and kinesiology taping. I was fortunate enough to have helped out at the Hackney half marathon. Michelle: Your practice is absolutely beautiful. State-of-the-art and very modern. Ben: Thank you. I felt it was important to provide calm and inviting surroundings to help patients feel at ease during their visit to the Clinic. So when designing the practice, as well as a reception area; an alternative outer waiting room (especially for the summer) was created, together with light and airy treatment rooms to provide comfortable, spacious facilities. Michelle: Good luck Ben. ■

“
After falling pregnant with my first child I discovered that not all mothers-to-be have a 'glow'. I developed the 'mask of pregnancy' - very dark patches of melasma over most of my face. I found these very embarrassing and felt that my face often looked dirty or like I had streaky fake tan on! I hoped these would disappear after I had the baby, they didn't. I have known Frances for many years and I know how professional and competent she is, she has years of experience and is up to date on all treatments so I knew she would be able to help. She recommended a course of 8 combined peels, with home use of Vitamin C and Fair Complexion serum and a Glycolic wash, and patience! Pigment does not disappear overnight, it is a combination approach of peels, products and strict application of SPF (which has the added bonus of keeping new wrinkles at bay!)
”
I am delighted with the results and after a few months the difference is amazing, I feel so much more confident now and don't have to cover myself in makeup to hide the patches. Thank you Frances, you are a true professional. Jackie C, Chingford xx

HEALTH & BEAUTY
STEERING CLEAR OF SPORTS INJURIES
Sport can be a dangerous business - preventing injuries or treating them is not always a straightforward task.
A
lways consult a medical expert, but here are some helpful hints to help you steer clear of some sports injuries.
ACHILLES TENDONITIS... When the Achilles tendon (at the back of the ankle) is overused, inflammation and pain can occur. Left untreated, it can become chronic and can worsen until it becomes near impossible to run. It is common amongst runners. Preventing Achilles tendonitis: Stretching and strengthening exercises for the calf muscles can help prevent injury. A tight and inflexible calf muscle puts undue strain on the Achilles. Ensure you have the correct shoes for your form of exercise. GROIN STRAIN... Groin strain is a strain or rupture of the adductor muscle, which is situated in the upper thigh. Symptoms include sharp pain, swelling and sometimes even bruising. Groin strain is common in football and racket sports. Prevention of a groin strain: As with most muscle pulls, the best way to prevent injury is stretching before exercise. Proper warm-up, gradually increasing the intensity of the activity may help prevent injury, as will strength work on the inner thigh muscles. SHIN SPLINTS... Shin splints occur when the muscles of the lower leg to the shin bone become inflamed, with a pain when you run, walk or point the toes. This is often experienced by people who aren’t used to exercising. Wearing unsuitable or worn-out shoes may also be a factor. Prevention of shin splints: It is best not to do too much too fast. Get good trainers with good shock absorption and stretch properly before and after exercise. LOWER BACK PAIN... Lower back pain comes in many guises — from slipped disks to back spasms, and sciatica. Sports-related back pain is often caused by improper stretching. It is most common in runners, cyclists, golfers, and tennis players. Prevention of lower back pain: Some lower-back injuries cannot be prevented and are often just bad luck, but you can minimise the risk by warming up properly. HAMSTRING PULL... This is caused by tears to the fibers of the hamstring located at the back of the thigh. A hamstring injury produces a sudden sharp pain or ache. The degrees can be minor to severe, but both will make 3 8 J U LY 2 0 1 5
running or even walking difficult and in some severe cases, near impossible. Common in sports involving explosive bursts of pace such as football, basketball and tennis. Prevention of a hamstring pull: The chances of a hamstring injury occurring can be minimised with a proper warm-up and with a thorough stretching of the hamstring (touching your toes with straight knees). Wearing cycling shorts can help keep the hamstring warm. TENNIS ELBOW... Tendons in the elbow get stretched beyond their capacity by a repetitive action and become inflamed. It is common to tennis players and golfers, with pain in the elbow being felt when gripping or turning items. Prevention of tennis elbow: Commitment to forearm strengthening - wrist curls, reverse wrist curls, and squeezing a rubber ball with a proper warm-up and cool down prior to and after playing should go some way to helping. ANKLE SPRAIN... Ankle sprain occurs due to a false movement when the ligaments that hold the bones become over-stretched, with a throbbing pain in the ankle, and potentially lots of swelling, bruising and tenderness. Prevention of ankle sprain: Wear supportive shoes and strengthen your ankles by doing exercises, as well as taping the ankle or wearing a lace-up brace, but these measures won’t guarantee you won’t be injured if you fall hard. RUNNER’S KNEE ... This occurs when overuse leads to irritation of the tendon below the kneecap or when underneath the kneecap is worn. It does not just affect runners, with cyclists and football players among those who can be affected. Pain is often most severe after hill running and there is often swelling. Prevention of runner’s knee: Remember to stretch well. Strengthening work focusing particularly on the quadriceps will help as will the correct running shoes, which should be replaced regularly. THE FINAL WORD... The majority of sports injuries are preventable and often due to a lack of a proper warm-up or stretching regime. Inflexibility of muscles can contribute significantly to injury Despite all these precautions, it’s a fact of life that people do get injured - you only have to look at the amount of professionals that get injured, and that’s rarely anything to do with proper preparation on their part. But by having a regular routine of warm-up, strengthening and stretching can go some way to keeping you fit rather than injured.

YEARS
YOUNGER Q&A WITH DOCTOR AMANDA WONG-POWELL FROM COURTHOUSE CLINICS, THE UK’S NUMBER ONE DOCTOR-LED COSMETIC CLINIC CHAIN. We all wish we could hold on to our youthful skin. Luckily there is now Thread Lift, a unique treatment that provides the same results as a facelift but without the need to go under the knife. Doctor Amanda Wong-Powell, Clinical Director at Courthouse Clinics, answers the most frequently asked questions posed by prospective patients looking to turn back the years. Q.WHAT EXACTLY IS THREAD LIFT?
Q. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Thread Lift is a non-surgical anti-ageing treatment in which bio-absorbable thread is used to lift and smooth the skin. The results are much like a surgical facelift but without the associated risks or recovery time. You’ll also never get that ‘pulled-back’ look. It primarily helps to improve the appearance of sagging skin and wrinkles, two concerns that a lot of my patients complain about when they come to see me.
All side effects associated with the Thread Lift are temporary. Patients may experience mild swelling, redness or bruising around the treatment sites but this disappears within a few days.
Q.WHAT HAPPENS DURING TREATMENT? It’s a really simple yet effective procedure that has immediate results. In around half an hour to an hour, the threads are placed beneath the skin with a very fine needle to lift the contours of the face and restore lost volume. The components used to form the thread stimulate the body’s collagen production process, which means the skin will continue to look healthier and more youthful even months after the procedure. 4 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5
Q.WHO CAN GET IT? Men and women aged between 30-60 with mild to moderately aged skin are suitable candidates. If you find yourself lifting the centre of your face upwards with your fingertips when you look in the mirror, this is ideal for you! Q. HOW LONG DOES IT LAST? The threads are bio-absorbable so will be naturally broken down by the body in around 12 months. This is then excreted through natural metabolic pathways via sweat, urine, breath and so on.

CHANGING PEOPLES’ LIVES D

BY ASH PARMAR
o you suffer from bad breath? Or do you know a friend or a family member that has bad breath, and you have not had the courage to let them know about this? Bad breath (which is closely linked with gum disease) can be a social problem, unpleasant for others and embarrassing for the person that has it. This article explores the causes of bad breath, and what can be done to achieve and maintain a clean, healthy mouth with fresh breath for total confidence. MAIN CAUSES OF BAD BREATH Poor oral hygiene. Plaque contains bacteria, which produce waste products (VSCs) that cause bad breath. Therefore, if the daily brushing and cleaning of teeth is not ideal, then more plaque bacteria will exist. Tongue coating. Bacteria on the tongue accounts for 80-90% of mouth related bad breath. Yet most people do NOT scrape and clean the tongue on a daily basis. Poor fillings or crowns. Any leaking filling or with a ledge leads to food trapping and this itself causes problems such as gum disease, decay and bad breath. Smoking and alcohol. Tar, nicotine and alcohol causes dry mouth and reduced salivary flow, which results in bad mouth odour. Pungent smelling food. Strong smelling foods such as onion, garlic and fish may cause bad breath even hours after brushing the teeth. HOW TO PREVENT GUM DISEASE AND HAVE FRESH BREATH Brush your teeth at least twice a day
!
Clean between the teeth every day with floss or small brushes – this will remove the plaque and bacteria that build up. Gently cleanse the tongue with a tongue cleanser, such as OOLITT. Avoid over-indulging in spicy foods, garlic and onion. Reduce the consumption of coffee, tea and alcohol, all of which have a drying effect on the mouth. Gargle with Ultradex mouthwash. This is an alcohol free mouthwash and suitable for vegetarians. It contains chlorine dioxide, which is scientifically proven to remove VSCs. Visit your dentist and hygienist regularly. Bad breath can be a strong indicator that there is gum disease. With effective treatment and advice, it is possible to have a healthy mouth and also fresh breath. To find out more about bad breath and gum disease, visit the following website: www.ultradex.co.uk. For further information or questions, please contact us on 020 85000544 to arrange a free initial consultation with a scanning X-ray and photographs (normally worth £125). One of our dentists at Smile Design By Ash can then give you the best advice (in private and in confidence) on any gum disease, or bad breath related problems you may have.

MICRO NEEDLING The Differences Between Professional Medical Grade and At-Home Treatments
WITH FRANCES FURLONG
D
erma roller or micro-needling is one of the most versatile skin treatments in the UK, it is suitable for men and women of all ages and suits most skin types. It is a process which involves rolling the specially designed instrument over the skin to create a series of tiny little pricks. The Derma roller or micro-needling device is made up of a barrel or a stamp with numerous pins on the surface which serve to create multiple tiny and minor wounds. The act of wounding the skin kick-starts its repair processes for a series of benefits:-
Skin tightening, Collagen production and Cell renewal
However there is a lot of confusion on the different depths in which the skin is penetrated by the needles and this will ultimately give you a different skin response and result. It is impossible to stimulate collagen that can help moderate to deep wrinkles and acne scars with at home shorter needles like 0.2 mm to 1 mm depths and this leads some clients to think that derma rollers are in - effective or give disappointing results. The Home Care Derma roller serves the following purposes:• To enhance the penetration of skin creams and serums into the skin; • To enhance and support results between professional Derma roller treatments by stimulating epidermal cells for faster epidermis renewal and thicker epidermal cell layers.
BENEFITS OF INJECTED HYALURONIC ACID DERMAL FILLERS VERSUS TEMPORARY TOPICAL PRODUCTS FOR LINES AND WRINKLE REDUCTION Youthful skin is rich in Hyaluronic acid (HA) a substance that binds water, hydrates the skin and promotes all important softness and fullness. But as we age the HA in our skin gradually becomes less efficient and leads to loss of volume and the tell tale signs of ageing. Restylane and Emervel products give an effective and natural helping hand. Downside of temporary crows feet and wrinkle creams and serum relaxers are they often turn dry and flaky after application so hard to use with make up and are only a short term fix, where as dermal fillers sit in the skin and hold their shape from 6-12 months.
4 6 J U LY 2 0 1 5
However I personally believe that creams or exfoliating agents that contain AHAs or micro polishes give the same effect without using needles. The problem is with needles is that they become blunt so after a few days of use they can cause more harm then good furthermore there is a possibility of it becoming contaminated with micro organisms in the same way as makeup brushes that are not cleaned. The dermis is composed of three types of tissue that are present throughout - not in layers. The types of tissue are:Collagen, Elastic tissue and Reticular fibres
The thickest skin on face is on the chin & cheeks and even in these areas it will not be any thicker than only 1.62 mm. This also means there is no need to be using a Derma roller longer than 1.5 mm in any facial area. At 1.5 mm the needles are touching the dermis generally 2mm and 3 mm rollers are used in body rejuvenation to help tighten the skin, smooth the appearance of cellulite and improve the appearance of stretch marks. Choosing a Derma roller treatment with a trained professional has a series of additional benefits:• Trained expert • Derma roller device with titanium needles and sterile single use application so no blunt needles! • More intensive treatment with deeper penetration • Skilful and even application of the roller, with focus on specific areas as required • Use of local anaesthetic cream where necessary which can only be administered by a medical practitioner. ■

HITTING THE SPOT Tap into the power of understanding your dosha to combat acne the natural way. We like to think it’s better to ‘gently encourage’ your skin to purity than go for the all-out attack.
O
ver the past few months we have explained the basic principles of Ayurveda from the doshas (your mind/body type) to the unique perspective of treating the skin with an overall approach. It is important to reiterate the skin cannot be disconnected from the rest of the body or from the mind; this is why Ayurveda has shown effective results. It looks at the whole person. Let’s just begin by looking at acne and what are considered its root causes. It is commonly known that acne is often experienced by teens and manifests itself as a chronic condition of breakouts characterised by blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. This is often a result of overactive sebaceous glands. The glands are stimulated mainly due to hormonal imbalances (hence the connection to our teenage years), stress and poor diet. However cases of adult acne are on the rise and yet only a small fraction of us will seek help for the condition.
THE MEDICAL MYTH This may be because it is a condition for which we want immediate results and while you may see a fast change with conventional medical methods, it is actually quite superficial and aimed only at preventing the bacterial over-growth in the skin. In short it is treating the symptoms rather than the cause and hence the effect can be short lived.
Added to this many of us are averse to the use of antibiotics (prescribed for more severe cases of acne) and suffer from dry, itchy and inflamed skin from harsh topical creams designed to attack the surface break-outs. But if we are prepared to have a little patience and make some other lifestyle changes, acne can be beaten once and for all and leave you feeling more energised in the process.
THE ARISSA SCHOOL OF SELF-AWARENESS This is where our unique consultations come in. Before any treatment is recommended I will personally work with you to establish your dosha and look at how your diet and lifestyle may be affecting your skin. Remember most things that show themselves externally begin internally whether it is something obvious like acne, or something less apparent such as headaches and even anger. You may find that something relatively simple like going against the grain of your WHEN IT ISN’T QUITE ACNE dosha in your diet is causing You may not be experiencing full-on acne but other the problem. less severe skin complaints can also be treated in Characteristically it is the the same way. approach will strip away the protective elements leaving us prone to bacteria. Even by ‘playing it safe’ and using only water can be harmful as water has a PH of around 7 and alcohol based astringent products take this level up to around 10 destroying the acid mantle. Equally, an imbalance in the Pitta dosha can cause excess heat in the body which is widely associated with hormonal issues. But these are the things you will become aware of and as such can make those vital changes. Of course we will discuss your skin care regime too and put you on the right path to clear skin with the use of pure, natural Ayurvedic products from the renowned Ayurda range. As we have said before we have chosen these products because they follow traditional ancient methods of cultivation and pay attention to the energy of certain body areas. Rather than sitting on the skins surface the skin quite literally drinks them into the dermis, the deeper layer beneath the epidermis. They are the most wholesome nutrition for your skin imaginable, created in small batches to maintain integrity and freshness. With acne your skin will have already suffered enough inflammation, be kind and help it to calm with a big dose of nature’s best ingredients…and a little help from Arissa. ■ Next month: Seeing red – getting to grips with rosacea.
BUT DON’T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT… I have always struggled with my skin, never having chronic acne but always prone to breakouts and congestion. Like most women, having a bad skin day always affected my confidence and was something I was constantly aware of. The programme Sona recommended was tailored to my specific issues which made me immediately feel assured it was more likely to help. The focus in the salon is all about holistic help so they gave me tips on what I could be doing daily to help improve my skin and also educate me about my Pitta skin. As well as the treatment programme I changed all of my skin products to using the Ayurda range and within a week of just using the products I noticed a real difference. What I also love is that when you read the ingredients on the products you recognise all of them! No nasty chemicals go into them; they are all natural and as such smell and feel amazing. I have had about 12 treatments (facials and micro or light treatments) and the effect on my skin has been incredible, my skin is the best it has ever been and the results are consistent. Jen O’Shea

GRIT YOUR TEETH AND GO FOR IT! WORDS BY DEE BROWN

aring Eileen has always supported her family, from her elderly mum to her young grandchildren, never taking time out to take care of herself. “It took me five years to build up the courage to have something done and I thought it’ll be silly to wait another ten years, go for it while you can!” “I used to be very paranoid. I would never get in a photograph and would always be the one offering to take it. I felt like the Queen Mother when I smiled”. Eileen decided from that point that a change was needed and after her brother-in-law Alan had extensive treatment at the practice, she knew that Smile Design by Ash was the place to go. “It was something I was considering and Alan was so happy with his teeth, so I thought I’d get started”. Eileen started her journey at Smile Design by Ash with a complimentary consultation to find out exactly how we could help her get the smile she wanted. “My top teeth started chipping a while ago because my bottom teeth jutted out a bit. I’ve always had white fillings
on the teeth to build them up, and when they discoloured I started to cover my mouth. I am a smiley person and my teeth just made me feel less confident.” Eileen then began her dental journey with Luk, starting with cosmetic braces to correct her lower crooked teeth. “It was a funny feeling having braces for the first time”. Eileen then went on to brighten her smile with ZOOM! Teeth Whitening and two porcelain veneers to improve her chipped front teeth. “I am so much more confident! Luk has been incredible. He’s fabulous and he was so meticulous to make sure that I was happy.” “I’d say to anyone who is interested in having treatment to grit your teeth and go for it! I love that people say I look well, it’s much more of a compliment than someone saying you’ve had your teeth done. I know my smile is natural and I am so pleased with the result.” Are you embarrassed of your smile? A SMILE CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING Principal Dentist Dr Suki Shakthi

r Suki Shakthi qualified over 20 years ago, beginning her career in hospital where she worked in maxillofacial surgery, which deals with trauma and oral cancer. After gaining five years of hospital experience, she moved into general practice and set up the Bluebell Dental Practice in 2003, where it has gone from strength to strength, now offering solutions to many different dental needs all under one roof. Dentistry is a vocation, it is a practical hands-on profession and you are making such a difference to people’s lives. If you can help someone out of pain, it’s very satisfying. As a dentist you are not just looking for fillings, you come across all sorts of things, for example I’ve diagnosed several people with pre-cancerous lesions. People still associate the dentist with the drill and some adults are more fearful than children. When I see a child for the first time, I don’t wear my mask or gloves, I ask them to sit on a normal chair so they feel comfortable and never force them to do something they don’t want to. Some basic advice I give to patients, is to brush at least twice a day, cut down on fizzy drinks, sugary and acidic foods and visit the dentist regularly. INVISALIGN One of our most successful cosmetic treatments is for the clear Invisalign braces and as a Platinum Elite Provider, I am passionate about the significant results the 5 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5

OTHER DENTAL SERVICES We have an experienced team at Bluebell, meaning that in many cases you can see someone within our practice without having to visit elsewhere to complete your treatment. We have a Periodontist who specialises in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum disease. We also have a dentist with special interest in implants, who has placed over 1000 successful implants where gaps and other irregularities present problems for patients, affecting their health, smiles and confidence.
Invisalign braces make. I am very proud to say we are now one of the top Invisalign providers in the UK and the number one provider in West Essex, treating an average of 100 happy patients each year. I have been treating Invisalign patients for over five years and my Platinum Elite status means that I have a very high level of experience so my patients can expect the highest possible level of treatment. As a Platinum Elite Invisalign dentist, my passion and belief in the treatment, coupled with the experience gained from treating many different orthodontic problems, makes myself and my other Invisalign colleagues, the ideal choice when considering clear braces. With Invisalign, achieving the smile you always dreamed of doesn't have to be a big deal. In fact, it barely has to impact your day-to-day life at all. Invisalign straightens teeth using a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that are custom-made specifically for your teeth. As you replace each aligner every two weeks, your teeth will move - little by little, week by week, gradually moving towards the projected final position. One of the key differences between the Invisalign treatment and more traditional braces is that, in most cases, no extractions are necessary. At Bluebell the price quoted is the complete price, so with no hidden extras, this includes all the treatment from start to finish. In addition to this we have also developed the very first dental App in the UK, specifically for invisible braces. The 'Invisible Braces Scan' App which allows patients to submit photos using Apple iPhone and iPad and any Android handsets/tablets to receive an instant evaluation for their suitability of Invisalign, is available for free download (Invisible Braces Scan). There is no obligation to undergo the treatment once you have submitted the photo, so no commitment is asked of patients, the concept of hassle-free assessment is something that is key to the procedure.
FACIAL REJUVINATION We also offer many types of facial rejuvenation in the practice including anti-wrinkle treatment, tear troughs, derma fillers and derma roller. Wrinkle reducing injections are a popular and effective procedure for those keen to improve their appearance and prevent aging. The practice’s Facial Rejuvination technique temporarily smooths frown lines and wrinkles by ‘freezing’ certain facial muscles, preventing their unwanted movement and allowing the area to look smoother and less lined. Muscle freezing
injections will be applied, in most cases, to the upper third of the face, eliminating frown lines, forehead creases and crow’s feet around the eyes. The quick, painless treatment is a cost-effective and safe way of achieving a rejuvenated appearance without having to go ‘under the knife’ and this age defying effect can last four to six months, before gradually fading. Dermal fillers, containing naturally occurring hyaluronic acid, will be used for smoker’s lines, laughter lines and around the lip area. It can also be used to create fuller lips, these can last for up 12-18 months. ■

HOUSE & GARDEN
Taking a Step Up F
rom spirals to spindles, glass to granite, there’s plenty of scope for making a statement, but homeowners looking to transform their space are often unaware of the possibilities. The key is to understand your options and the impact building regulations may have. First and foremost, stairs need to fulfil their primary function of getting you from one level to the next, once this need is fulfilled, you can really go to town on the aesthetics and create something that gives a really great first impression. In terms of renovation, replacing a staircase is akin to knocking down a structural wall. But if your stairs are badly positioned, oppressive, or hinder light flow through the house, then it’s worth considering, as a new flight can make all the difference. Always consult an architect or a specialist company, as it’s critical that a new staircase fits in both proportionally and stylistically. Remember, also, that plans must comply with building regulations, specifically the Approved Document K or Protection, Falling and Impact, and in particular section K1, which deals with stairs, ladders and ramps. You can download it free from staircases.org/regulations.htm. STRAIGHT STAIRS Straight doesn’t have to equal dull, and it’s possible to modernise less than lovely stairs with cladding, such as timber, tiles or stone. Many modern homes have stairs built in concrete, which is ideal for resurfacing. If you’re updating a less sturdy staircase, make sure it’s sound by cladding it with marine plywood before affixing any sort of tiles, otherwise they may crack. You can re-clad a staircase in oak for about £500-£1,000, depending on the balustrade you choose. This is a much more accessible solution if you would rather not embark on big structural changes, or are limited by space. SPIRAL AND HELICAL STAIRCASES Spiral staircases wind around a central pole and have a
5 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5
handrail on the outer side only. Helical stairs do not have a central pole and there is a handrail on both sides. If a spiral staircase is being used to access a single room, it must be at least 1500mm in diameter. But if the spiral goes up to more than one room, it is classed as a main staircase and needs to be at least 1900mm. Bear in mind that the opening in which your spiral fits needs to be 100mm wider than the spiral itself. A bespoke spiral would start at £3,000. It can be difficult to get furniture up and down, so move large items in before you install the stairs. CARPETED STAIRS If you prefer carpet to bare wood or glass, make sure you buy one that’s suitable for stairs. It’s imperative you choose a quality, hard-wearing carpet – 80% wool to 20% nylon. Avoid loop-pile carpets as they “grin” (open up when bent) and are more slippery. Use a good underlay over both tread and riser and fit the carpet so the pile runs down the stairs. It’s also possible to use a strip of carpet as a runner, see Roger Oates Design Hartley runners, which are reversible so last twice as long. CANTILEVERED STAIRS A cantilevered staircase can look stunning, but is also a feat of engineering, with most of the weight of the treads supported by one wall. You need a balustrade to comply with UK building regulations, but glass is unobtrusive and will still give that ‘weightlessness’ look. These staircases should always be designed and built by a specialist. ALTERNATE STAIRS Ninety per cent of new staircases are constructed to create access to a loft conversion. The pitch of the roof can make constructing a flight difficult and, if this is the case, alternate-tread stairs can be the answer. These have one tread for the left foot and another for the right, and mean the angle of the stairs can be tighter, increased from 42 to 65 degrees. Consider who will need to use them, as they are trickier to negotiate than standard stairs. It can also be hard to move furniture up and down them.

MORE THAN A
SWIMMING POOL D
escribing Origin Leisure as a ‘swimming pool company’ isn’t quite accurate. Anyone who has seen or owned one of the beautifully designed buildings created by this local company will know that they are much more than just that: They are an extension of the home, and a space for fitness, work, leisure and entertaining. The Olympic, Aquaria, Barn and Eco pool house collections are designed to inspire homeowners, but each and every pool from Origin Leisure is created with bespoke finishes and facilities. Each is tailored to the needs of your family and designed to be as individual as you are. Andrew Ginger, CEO at Origin Leisure, gives an insight into the different ways you can enjoy a home swimming pool. A DEN FOR THE KIDS Every parent or grandparent will relate to hearing the phrase “I’m bored” during a long weekend or the school 5 6 J U LY 2 0 1 5
holidays. A home swimming pool will get children out of the house, avoiding ‘square eyes’ from watching TV or playing computer games. In the summer, open up the bi-folding doors and let sunlight flood through. While in the winter, youngsters can enjoy all the benefits of the great outdoors, shielded from the cold and wet weather outside. This was one of the reasons Kerrie and Matt Smith made the decision to take the plunge. Kerrie explains: “Seeing the amount of flexibility it gave the family swayed our decision. We can have a number of children over at the house, happily playing in the pool all day. It can be chucking down with rain but the children can still be out of the house playing in a safe and warm environment”. A SOCIAL SPACE A pool house can also be a great place to entertain a group of friends or meet for a catch up over a glass of wine. After all, why should children have all the fun? From installing a fully fitted kitchen to recreating the feeling of a
p56-ESSEX-ORIGIN.qxp__ 03/07/2015 09:51 Page 2
trendy bar with pool tables, wide screen TVs and seating areas, the sky is the limit for turning your pool house into a social space. A PLACE TO RELAX AND UNWIND A pool house can also be a place of tranquillity and calm away from the hustle and bustle of the house. Origin Leisure’s experts can create a sensory space for relaxing by advising on the best lighting, water movement and sounds for your oasis of calm. The inclusion of a spa, sauna and steam room will also rival the most prestigious health spa. A HOME CINEMA Far from the pine chalets of days gone by, pool buildings today can include the very latest state of the art technology. Kick back and watch your favourite film on a wide screen TV or turn up the volume and listen to your playlist on your in-built speakers. A VIEWING PLATFORM Bi-folding doors that open up entire sides of the building and high gable windows that let in an abundance of light make a pool house the perfect place to look out onto your garden. Kerrie Smith often uses hers for just that, as she explains: “I feel like I get the best of both worlds. All I have to do is open up the bi-fold doors and I’m outside. Even when the sun isn’t out I still have the warmth of the building.” A PERSONAL GYM Work out at any time of day or night without being overlooked. The Smiths are an athletic couple who turned
their pool house into a place to keep active and haven’t looked back. “My husband is an impressive swimmer so we included a swim jet powerful enough to give him a good workout. For me, the gym overlooks the pool so I can be on the exercise bike while watching the kids swimming.” AN OFFICE Who needs a traditional study when you can work from home in bright and airy outdoor workspace all year round? Use the pool building as your own private office, where you can sit and focus on business. A great view of the garden and an abundance of light are sure to increase productivity. A SWIMMING POOL Last, but not least, it’s a place to swim! Keep soggy swimming costumes outside the house by including a changing room and shower facilities. The pool itself can have different lighting, jets, tiles and depths to choose from, to make it perfect for your family. ABOUT ORIGIN LEISURE Origin Leisure is an award winning company with over 30 years’ experience creating beautiful bespoke swimming pools, designed to your specification. The company manages the whole swimming pool installation process from concept to completion, which means all elements of the design and build of your pool are taken care of. ■

SHADES OF GREY Grey is full of surprises and won’t fail to seduce any setting, so follow the guide to taking advantage of its charms.
F
ifty Shades Of Grey is a best-seller with its tale of seduction, and just as irresistible is the trend for shades of grey in interiors. Gabrielle Fagan explores the sophisticated power of grey and how it transforms rooms. Grey is so sexy and sophisticated - not the masterful hero of the best-selling novel, but the decor colour. Once an overlooked ‘wallflower’ section on the colour chart, grey has shed it’s cold, institutional image, and is proving it’s power to transform any setting. Flirting with its subtle, versatile tones, from crisp charcoal and French grey to shimmering silver and mysterious smoke-grey could be just the way to turn up the heat at home. “Grey is a surprisingly calming and harmonious colour to live with, but you must choose the right tone,” advises Mark Upstone, head of global visual display at The Conran Shop. “Greys with more brown in the mix will feel warm - white based greys will feel colder. “Be bold. Don’t restrict yourself to a feature wall, grey looks better en masse, and use different finishes of the same tone to create intriguing interest and depth. “Give grey a starring role by using it on walls and paintwork, he suggests, and a matching gloss paint finish for woodwork. If that feels too overpowering, tone it down with pastels, white or a zingy kick of sharp citrus, which will ensure it has less of a masculine edge.
FACE THE WALL If you’re committing to a new relationship with this colour, the best place to start is with the walls. To find the one grey you love - experiment! Try colours in different tones by using sample pots, but ensure you see how they change with the light in your 6 0 J U LY 2 0 1 5
home throughout the day. It also works well to simply paint one wall in your chosen grey and use it as a backdrop to a focus piece of furniture such as a striking sofa or piece of furniture. FURNISHING AFFAIR Texture, shape and symmetry are vital ingredients for successful grey sanctuaries. This season, splashes of colour are an antidote to our winter gloom and almost anything goes with greys. Pinks always sit well, or you could be a little adventurous and choose a vibrant raspberry, deep purple or burnt orange and soft yellows for a lovely contrast. Grey works in modern and older properties, and will look as beautiful in a minimalist setting matched with sleek white shelving as it will with period wood panelling and mahogany furniture.” SEDUCTIVE SETTING Transform a bedroom palette with greys in decor or silky fabrics to bring an air of relaxation to an uptight setting. Hang drapery panels which puddle on the floor to frame your windows with a layer of textured sheers behind them for the ultimate in privacy. Grey tones in fabrics and wallpapers create a glamorous and striking effect, especially paired with pattern and texture. It’s a chic, streamlined look which also taps into the five-star ‘hotel’ trend which will be very evident in interiors this autumn. If passion for the look is running high, dress a bed appropriately in shades of grey bedlinen. Simple luxury touches are essential such as rugs and lighting.

HOUSE & GARDEN
TIPS FOR A GREAT GARDEN Nice gardens are very appealing. Many buyers cite a thoughtfully designed and well-kept garden as a major factor in their decision to buy a property.
W
ith so many television programmes, magazines and books devoted to gardening and outdoor design, house buyers are becoming more ambitious and more discerning when it comes to tracking down the garden of their dreams. Here are some hints for creating a perfect garden for your home. Choose a single theme or style. If you have acres of rolling grounds you can separate into different areas, otherwise you will need to pick one style and stick to that throughout. It’s no good trying to create a harmonious and peaceful Zen garden but then planting a riot of wildflowers in the middle of it. Trying to mix a formal English-style garden with naturalistic parkland won’t work. Nothing spoils a perfect garden like a hodgepodge of styles. Consider your desires and your constraints in order to fuel your creativity. Necessity is the mother of invention, so think about what you need from your garden (a space to entertain? A place to grow fruit and vegetables? somewhere for children to play?) and come up with a creative solution. It’s possible to create a formal-style garden but also be fairly self-sufficient. If your garden suffers from poor inner-city soil and too much shade, be inventive. It’s possible to produce an English-style layout, but with decorative edibles rather than flower beds. Cut
6 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5
back overhanging shade trees into neat borders and use raised beds to create an easy-to maintain, high-quality growing-areas. It’s the perfect blend of desire meets constraints.
Plan your space, and your time carefully. A truly great garden is a well-planned garden... Draw out your garden in detail, making note of areas of shade and sun, damp and troublesome zones, areas of high traffic and sight lines. Use this plan to decide how you will use each part of the garden. Then decide what you’re going to plant and when. Different plants have different growing seasons and if you plan your calendar well you’ll have a constant symphony of flowers, fruit or vegetables as one comes into season as another dies back. You may have room for a swimming pool, or beautiful pond, so approach the experts in this case. Decide on the best garden furniture to suit your individual needs, based on whether you have decking or a sheltered space to entertain. With a little foresight and planning you can create a stylish and practical garden that will wow potential buyers.

wnership of a period property comes with responsibility, as well as an ongoing drain on budget due to maintenance, particularly where windows are concerned. Whilst there is inevitably a desire to improve and modernise this has to be tempered by a need to conserve. So when it comes to replacement windows, the results of poorly judged ‘improvements’ are plain for all to see and can have a disastrous effect on a building’s appearance, not to mention its value. The metal frames are cleverly designed to fit direct to brick or stone mullions, or into the original timber frames, so reducing the need for costly redecoration afterwards. The marine grade powder coated finish comes in over 200 colours and can even be specified in dual colours i.e. different inside and out to suit specific décor taste. A comprehensive range of handles, hinges and hardware completes the period look to provide detailed original features. The company is renowned for quality products, excellent customer service and after sales care.
