For those interested in following this aspiring talent, there have been recent and significant developments with respect to her sporting success story. • She recently won the Eastern Regional ISA Triatholan • Claudia was entered into the National event representing the East Region on 29th April 2015 in Herefordshire for 11-12 year olds. Claudia finished in an impressive 2nd place. Even more of a success is that she is only 10 years old. Clearly she has an ability

t just wouldn’t be the summer without packing up a picnic and heading outside to enjoy some Open Air eatre. As a regular columnist she receives a lot of emails from the readership with requests for her to publish fiction. AS: Is this your first attempt at fiction? MH: I’ve always written fiction. Running my business, Star Copywriting, will always be my priority; fiction is another angle to my writing. AS: Why do you think people will read this story? MH: Because it is about sibling rivalry. Most people can relate to this subject in one way or another. AS: You make it sound as if reading your work is an experience. MH: Yes. You should feel as if you have been taken into a world outside of your comfort zone. Reading is escapism and dependent upon the genre, ascertains the experience.

AS: I’ve read all the 5* rave reviews on Amazon and people have certainly commented they couldn’t ‘put it down’. Does your story have a social comment on sibling rivalry? MH: ere are many. Depends on the readers’ experiences as to how many they pick up and want to question. So far, nobody has guessed the ending. It is deliciously shocking. ■

CyClists urged to join st Clare’s first-ever

bike ride

alling all cyclists! St Clare Hospice is holding its first-ever fundraising bike ride to coincide with its 25th anniversary celebrations.

e sporting event on Sunday, June 14 is the first time the organisers of the popular Essex County Bike Ride have chosen to support a local charity and it is expected to raise thousands of pounds for the Hastingwood-based Hospice. e sponsored ride starts and finishes at the Olympic legacy Redbridge Cycling Centre in Hainault and part of the route through the rolling countryside passes through the St Clare catchment area, which covers the whole of West Essex. Among the cyclists jumping in the saddle will be St Clare’s communications and marketing manager Karen Griﬃths, who signed up in memory of her late father and a close friend, both of whom received hospice care. She said: “Why am I doing it? Firstly, because I love the outdoors and secondly, because I’m passionate about the diﬀerence hospice care can make to those whose lives are turned upside down by a life-limiting or terminal diagnosis. My dad received hospice care towards the end of his life. It was amazing and such a blessing for the whole family, as well as my dad. Also, a dear friend Miranda, who was my age, recently came to the end of a two-year journey with cancer. I’m cycling in memory of both of them.” e money raised from the event will help St Clare continue to provide its skilled and compassionate care to local people living with a life-limiting or terminal illness and their families, both at the

that care going. So, I want to do my bit.” e bike ride is suitable for both recreational and club cyclists and oﬀers a choice of either a 33-, 60- or 100-mile route. Registration is £18 per person (£17.50 for team entry based on a minimum of six people) for the 33- and 60-mile routes, or £24 per person (£23.50 for team entry based on a minimum of six people) for the 100-mile route. Riders are encouraged to raise as much additional sponsorship as possible for St Clare. ■

A busy summer Term AT The OAk-Tree schOOls and zip wires. Headmistress Kaye Lovejoy places particular importance on the extra-curricular programme and comments, “Our children are constantly exposed to new experiences as we encourage them to develop diﬀerent interests and try new activities. We provide around 40 clubs and activities at school and they enjoy learning new skills”. At Normanhurst School in North Chingford, 35 pupils

e take a look at what’s coming up at the Oak-Tree Group of Schools - three local independent schools in the Epping Forest area that take pride in the wealth of opportunities they provide. With increased demand this year, it appears that more and more families are recognising the value of independent education for their children. In addition to the classroom-based learning, the Summer Term is filled with educational visits, sports and performances. e Oak-Tree Schools give their pupils a greater understanding of the topics they have been studying and broaden their horizons through the learning that takes place outside the classroom. At Epping’s Coopersale Hall, pupils are preparing for their three day residential outdoor pursuits trip to Grosvenor Hall in Kent, where they will take part in high-adrenaline activities such as high-wire rope climbing

and staﬀ recently returned from another successful ski trip to Italy. Claire Osborn, Headmistress, says “Our pupils work hard for the continual curricular assessments so it is lovely to provide some fantastic extra-curricular opportunities as part of their development. From the Gifted and Talented trip to HMS Belfast to the Kindergarten outing to the local fire station, this is a very busy term”. A highlight of the school’s social calendar is the Summer Barbeque, and this year there is a Western theme with line dancing and a bucking bronco. Having returned from their recent residential activity trips, the Year 5 and 6 pupils at Loughton’s Oaklands School are working hard preparing for the forthcoming production of ‘Scheherazade’. is is the story of a young woman who marries a grief stricken Sultan, and will be performed at Lopping Hall in Loughton. Headmistress Cheryl Macnair comments, “We provide many opportunities to develop our pupils’ creativity outside the classroom and I’m delighted to see them flourish. With so many trips, sports days, plays and performances, this is certainly a very busy time”. e Summer Term sees sports days for pupils of all ages at each school and the children are encouraged to compete for their Houses cheered on by their families and friends. e annual Prize Days are excellent opportunities to celebrate the pupils’ numerous successes with public praise and presentation of the prizes. ■

Writing the Perfect SPeech i t is a fact that more people have a greater fear of public speaking than dying… so to deliver a speech can be a very scary prospect. BUT with just a few tips to help overcome the worries, this daunting task could possibly be a lifetime highlight. Stage 1 – Why and Who?

Stage 4 – engage your audIence • Try and involve the audience. Perhaps ask a few questions so they need to respond to you. Comedians as part of the warm-up, engage the audience by asking simple questions such as: “Who’s from London?” • Consider your Arresting Opening and how you will grab attention when you speak.

Make notes to kick-start the process:

• What is the occasion? Wedding, Barmitzvah, graduation, professional speech on behalf of your company or employer? • Who are you talking to? Family? Friends? Acquaintances? Professional colleagues. So what’s the correct calibre of language? Friendly or formal? Are jokes appropriate? • What is the purpose and what would you like to achieve? Stage 2 – Be natural • Be yourself and as much as possible, be relaxed. • Assume you will need at least three drafts before its perfect. Don’t write the night before or enroute to the venue. Stage 3 – Make It readaBle • e speech should be written to be spoken. Don’t say ‘I am pleased. .’ It should be: “I’m pleased…” • Always remember people are listening and it takes more concentration to listen than to read. Ensure your sentences are clear and short. • When printing oﬀ the speech, use large letters and double-spaced sentences.

Especially that we are always two seasons ahead I’m always looking for new styles and a special look. It doesn’t matter age or pocket, we design for the person as an individual. Michelle: Is there a restriction on size? And what’s the inspiration when dressing a client? Debra: Our clients are all shapes and sizes we stock from size 6 to size 20 and have the expertise to alter and make the client look and feel great. Everything we do is from the heart. Michelle: And your assistants? Debra: e girls in the shop are the best. Between us we have over 120 years’ experience within the industry. We are here to help advise and recommend based upon an individual’s particular fashion sense. Michelle: Everybody knows your shop, your reputation far exceeds the local area but who else comes from outside Chigwell to shop at Debra? Debra: We have celebrities and customers from all over the UK and regulars also from abroad who come specially to see us. We are their personal stylists. We don’t follow – we lead, which is why we’ve retained our client base for years. Also when attending major events, they know nobody else will be wearing the same outfit. Michelle: I’ve read you have advised national press. In what capacity? Debra: We have done a huge array of fashion shoots, editorials, work for national newspapers, magazines and TV. Because I have such a creative team, we develop a look that is diﬀerent and reflects the client’s personality and status. Michelle: Why did you move shop? ere’s only a short walk between the two? Debra: e time just felt right, customer parking previously was diﬃcult, now this is alleviated in our new position. Our great window displays showcase the merchandise really well on Brook Parade.

Michelle: What would you say was a highlight? Debra: To be in an industry that allows me to travel, meet wonderful customers and celebrities, own a business for 34 years and still considered to be at the forefront of independent boutiques is all one big highlight. It’s very hard work but I’m delighted. Also it’s exciting that we have opened a fashion outlet on Woodford Bridge. Everything that has been in the sale goes into the outlet at half price or less. e shop itself has a wonderful atmosphere: A personal interaction between the customers, Debra and her team. ■

his month, I will focus on overcoming the fear of going to the dentist. About 50% of the population does not go to a dentist regularly. Many people have had a bad experience at some point in their life (often as a child), which puts them oﬀ. Over the years, teeth start to get damaged by decay, gum disease progresses and sooner or later, the individual is caught out by a real and painful dental emergency. Treatment is then often more extensive and potentially expensive. COMMON CONCERNS THAT PEOPLE HAVE e common worries that people have include the noise of the drill, injections, and pain during treatment. he kitchen in Kirsty and James’ newly renovated home was always designed to be the core of the property. Having renovated the building from a 1950’s bungalow into a 4 bedroom farmhouse style detached home, a grand kitchen was the only option. Kirsty knew she wanted a kitchen with wow factor and following a recommendation visited Davonport’s Colchester showroom. “I instantly fell in love with the whole look of the place, the service and all the stunning curved handmade furniture on display” explains Kirsty. e curves on display at the showroom impressed Kirsty so much that she decided to incorporate these into her kitchen. She wanted traditional and contemporary features to create a light and airy feel. he kitchen in Kirsty and James’ newly renovated home was always designed to be the core of the property. Having renovated the building from a 1950’s bungalow into a 4 bedroom farmhouse style detached home, a grand kitchen was the only option. Kirsty knew she wanted a kitchen with wow factor and following a recommendation visited Davonport’s Colchester showroom. “I instantly fell in love with the whole look of the place, the service and all the stunning curved handmade furniture on display” explains Kirsty. Matt and Kerrie Smith moved from London to a detached home in rural Buckinghamshire with their three children four years ago. Having spent the years updating their country retreat by refreshing the décor, they wanted to make a big improvement to suit the whole family. After visiting a friend with a new indoor swimming pool, the couple began investigating the possibility of building a pool house in their garden. Since speaking to Origin Leisure, they haven’t looked back.

GoinG for Gold e couple first had the idea during the 2012 Olympics. “My son has a friend who has an indoor pool and seeing the amount of flexibility it gave to the family was what swayed our decision”, explains Kerrie. “ey could have a number of children over at the house, all happily playing in the pool all day. Our kids, aged six, ten and 13, are at the age now where kicking a ball outside isn’t enough to keep them entertained for hours on end.” Andrew Ginger from Origin Leisure visited the couple and showed them other projects, while answering their questions about the build. “e second we met him we knew it was the right decision. Not only do they have 35 years’ experience, but the company understood what we wanted immediately. Most importantly, they were respectful of our budget. From start to finish they ensured we kept within our limit, with the end project costing £288,000”, says Kerrie.

shallow enough for our youngest to stand, but deep enough so adults could swim. e changing room had to be big for the children to all fit, while the sitting area is a place we can escape. It allows us to disappear from the house for a bit - almost like we’re on holiday!” e athletic couple also incorporated a gym and swim jet, making it the ideal space to keep active. “Matt is an impressive swimmer so the jet had to be powerful to give him a good enough workout. For me, a gym that overlooks the pool so I can be on the exercise bike while watching the kids swimming was essential.” On the outside, the building has been completed with restored bricks to match the outside of the family’s six bedroom property. Bi-folding doors open up so the family can enjoy the garden, despite the great British weather. “It can be chucking down with rain but it doesn’t matter – the children can still be outside playing and it’s safe and warm”, said Kerrie.

desiGninG The dream pool From the tiles to the taps, Origin Leisure provided options for the couple to choose from. “We had an idea of what we wanted, having used Pinterest to gain inspiration. We’d recently helped my parents rebuild their house in New York with an architect, and wanted a similar style. Origin Leisure came back to us with great suggestions based on our design brief.” Building work started in July 2014 and was completed in November, 4 weeks less than expected. e family were impressed with the eﬃciency and speed of the whole process. “I knew from the beginning that this was going to be a turn-key project. With Origin Leisure there was never any question that it would be subcontracted, we had one point of contact and the whole thing was managed by them, from start to finish. ey were so polite and thoughtful, even going to the extreme of moving our children’s beloved Wendy house from one part of the garden to another to make room for the swimming pool.”
