Phil McIntyre Live proudly presents

DAVID WALLIAMS’ GRANDPA’S GREAT ESCAPE LIVE 2019 UK Arena Tour. Tickets on sale now!

T

he first ever stage adaptation of Grandpa’s Great Escape, the exhilarating number one bestselling children’s book by actor and comedian David Walliams, is to tour UK arenas this Christmas. The live version of the kids’ favourite, which has sold over two million copies around the world begins in Birmingham on 23 December. It will then visit London, Sheffield, Nottingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow before culminating in Liverpool on 4 January. Tickets go on sale at 8am on Tuesday 4 June. Grandpa’s Great Escape Live follows the acclaimed television film which aired on BBC One in December 2018, and will be directed by Tony® Award nominee Sean Foley (The Catherine Tate Show Live & The Painkiller). Grandpa’s Great Escape is the eighth book by Walliams and was published in September 2015 by HarperCollins Children’s Books. David Walliams said: “Grandpa’s Great Escape Live is an incredible new development for the book. We’re not just turning it into a live show, but into a spectacular live arena show for all the family this Christmas. Being in arenas means we can have a life-size Spitfire, a tank, the London landscape and a dramatic escape from the Imperial War Museum. It’s great because we can really go to town with

all of those elements and this story demands that scale. I’m delighted to be involved with this arena tour of Grandpa’s Great Escape Live, working with fantastic people like the director Sean Foley and Kevin Cecil, who’s written the script. I couldn’t be more excited about it!” The wonderous stage design for Grandpa’s Great Escape Live will see arenas around the UK transformed into London and its landmarks, including Buckingham Palace and the River Thames, from thousands of feet in the sky, as Grandpa’s life size Spitfire soars through the air. The set for this multi-million pound production has been created by entertainment architects Stufish Productions (Cirque du Soleil, Beyonce & Jay Z, Madonna, The Rolling Stones). The script adaptation of the book has been written by Kevin Cecil (Little Britain & Gangsta Granny television film). Casting for the show will be announced soon. Grandpa’s Great Escape, which has been translated into 39 languages received a wealth of glowing reviews with the Evening Standard declaring Walliams as “the new Roald Dahl”, while The Times describe the story as “a beguilingly funny, original and thought-provoking tale… hilarious”. Many years ago, Grandpa was a World War II flying ace. But when he is sent to old folk’s home Twilight Towers – run by sinister Matron Swine – it’s up to Grandpa and his grandson, Jack, to plot a daring escape. Little do they know, the wicked matron is on to them.

Empowering this young new generation of

enthusiasts with the unparalleled driver involvement that has made the McLaren sports cars and supercars from Woking, Surrey acclaimed around the world, the new Ride-On takes the genre to the next level of McLaren authenticity. And with a range of popular McLaren colours available, three-to-six-year-olds have never had it so good, being able to choose from Azores Orange, Belize Blue, Lantana Purple, Onyx Black, Mauvine Blue, Silica White, or Saros Grey. The new, officially licensed McLaren 720S ‘Ride-On’ follows 2016’s launch of the brand’s first children’s electric car, the McLaren P1TM ‘RideOn’. Inspiring younger McLaren enthusiasts and future car owners everywhere as the most accessible version of the Ultimate Series icon, the diminutive McLaren P1TM edition proved that small things really can come in McLaren-shaped packages. Now the McLaren 720S ‘Ride-On’ is set to become the talk of the playground by further embracing the McLaren ethos. Functioning dihedral doors combined with exposed carbon-style elements and signature 720S styling cues immediately identifies the model with the actual car. Availability of an authentic McLaren colour range for the first time on one of the brand’s ‘RideOns’ confirms this as a playtime runabout that could only have come from McLaren. The exclusive launch colour, available later in the year and only

About McLaren Automotive: McLaren Automotive is a creator of luxury, high-performance sports cars and supercars. Every vehicle is hand-assembled at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, Surrey. The company has defined product families: Sports Series, Super Series, Ultimate Series and Motorsport which are retailed through over 80 retailers in more than 30 markets around the world. through McLaren Retailers, is the McLaren heritage hue, Papaya Spark. Like the McLaren P1TM ‘Ride-On’, the McLaren 720S ‘Ride-On’ is powered by an electric motor operated by a working accelerator pedal with added engine sounds - because we all like to hear an engine! That “engine” operates with a key, but it can also be controlled by remote control to provide a degree of automotive autonomy, as well as parental control. A brake function –with brake light – and a dashboard display screen that gives key information will help to allay any toddlers’ range-anxiety. The screen also houses the infotainment system, with buttons for different functions on the

dashboard. When not whizzing around the nursery, the youngest of all McLaren drivers can take time out to listen to music or watch a short movie by plugging a USB or SD card into the sockets provided. A selection of popular songs for six-yearolds is pre-loaded into the system. This car will no doubt make your child the envy of their friends, and you might be able to fit in a ride for yourself if you’re willing to squeeze! Priced from £315, the junior McLaren comes with an equally junior price. In fact, it would be possible to buy seven hundred 720S ‘Ride-Ons’ for the cost of one real 720S Coupé. But just like the real thing, however, every 3-6-year-old’s dream machine is expected to be in high demand. McLaren has released a fun video on their website showing the car being put through its paces by a small child.

In 2018, the company launched the 600LT and the first two cars of Track25, the McLaren Speedtail, the next Ultimate Series, and McLaren’s first ever HyperGT, and 720S Spider. 2019 saw McLaren launch the 600LT Spider, the unveil of the previouslyconfirmed track-only Senna GTR and the new McLaren GT revealed as the fourth car of Track25. To support the development, engineering and manufacture of its range of innovative sports cars and supercars, McLaren Automotive partners with world leading companies to provide specialist expertise, technology and solutions. Little Country Cooks Never has there been a time when imaginative and creative play have been so important

R

ecent digital and tech advances have completely changed the patterns of our daily lives, leaving a potential void in the development of our children today. Many children spend more time in front of a screen than most parents are comfortable with, but prizing them away from the latest stream of animated entertainment is no easy task! The benefits of creative play are well documented, from improving problem solving and cognitive skills, to boosting self-expression and critical thinking, as well as creating new possibilities, negotiating, sharing and taking-turns. Social skills for life! A return to the more traditional ‘pretend-play’ and creative toys seems more than timely, however, while there are many creative toys available, not all are created equal. Many lose their novelty value quickly or are simply not well made and don’t last.

20 AUG/SEPT 2019

“Toys that fire a child’s imagination are an investment in their future” Karen Mazurek - Founder Little Country Cooks

The best creative toys are the ones that kids return to again and again, toys that become part of the household, toys that are built to last a lifetime. Inspired by simple, natural, traditional toys, Little Country Cooks have created a beautiful handmade cooker. Place it in the kitchen, playroom or bedroom - or even in the garden if the weather permits. Handmade with care, its simple design and stylish organic paint colour options mean it will compliment any room in the home.. It features a magnetic opening cooker door, slow closing lids, internal shelves, a thermometer and an alloy towel rail. The Little Country Cooks cooker provides hours of imaginative play with friends, siblings, mum and dad or solo. A toy to be passed from child to child for many generations to come. OLYMPIC RUNNER JO PAVEY: KEEPING KIDS ENTERTAINED & ACTIVE THIS SUMMER Athlete and mum-of-two Jo Pavey has teamed up with a childcare expert and Simplyhealth to inspire families to embrace active fun. WORDS: Lisa Salmon

D

espite most children longing for time off school, the long summer holidays all too often lead rapidly to cries of: “I’m bored!” Sound familiar? As a mum-of-two, Olympic athlete Jo Pavey knows this scenario first-hand. But she’s keen to highlight how keeping kids entertained over summer can also be a great opportunity to encourage them to be more active, along with the rest of the family too - something Pavey and her husband Gavin consider central to family life.

22 AUG/SEPT 2019

“As a parent, it’s great to aim to be a good role model for your children by being active yourself. I enjoy showing my children that it’s fun to be active, and I feel it helps them associate being active with having a happy and healthy life,” says Pavey, 45, who has joined forces with Simplyhealth (simplyhealth. co.uk) to inspire families to get on board with the idea. “Getting active together as a family is so much fun. It’s such a great way to spend some quality family time together, while keeping fit and healthy,”

Make time to rest

adds the athlete, mum to Jacob, nine, and five-yearold Emily. Of course, no one can be active all the time - so Deena Billings, head of childcare at Busy Bees nurseries, has joined the campaign too, with additional suggestions for keeping youngsters entertained all summer.

Billings points out that downtime is as important as physical activity. “Fun and games are exciting for children, but it can often leave them feeling tired and grumpy at the end of the day. Where possible, try making time for a midday nap, or even try bringing bedtime forwards,” she says. “If your child still uses a pushchair, they can nap on the go and you can still enjoy any plans you have later in the day, while ensuring they get all the time-out they need.”

Here are some ideas from Pavey and Billings...

Get the whole family active “When I head out running, instead of going alone, we regularly go to beautiful locations as a family. My husband and I run, and our son and daughter love whizzing along on their bikes,” says Pavey. “They’ll often do a little bit of running as well. We make it part of a fun day out by taking a picnic and staying around after to mess around on bikes or in the play park, and we often head down to the beach too.”

Keep it fun Pavey stresses that if parents want children to get active, it’s important for them to be having a good time. “It’s so important that they don’t think of being active as a chore, otherwise they could find exercising a negative experience. Whether you’re all active together as a family or they’re doing a club, it’s important for them to be taking part in something they enjoy,” she says.

Tell them how well they’re doing “Always give praise when your child has made a good choice for their health and fitness, like being keen to take part in activity, and when they’ve been enthusiastic,” adds Pavey. “It’s important for them to understand that the main thing you’re interested in is that they’re enjoying themselves.”

Enter an event together

Stop tummies rumbling

“It’s a good idea to do a little research and get an idea of what you’re looking for before taking the plunge”

Consistency is key in keeping children content, but it’s easy for this to falter over the summer, particularly if you’re on holiday. “Keeping them fed, rested and in line with home routines wherever possible will make life easier for everyone, especially with younger children,” says Billings. “Trying to get them out and about when they would normally be tucking into their lunch is going to make them irritable. By sticking to your routine schedule for meals, you’ll help curb tantrums triggered by hunger.”

Plan activities For a stress-free experience, it’s a good idea to plan and organise activities ahead of time. “There’s nothing worse than young children getting excited about a day trip, only to be disappointed when the tickets are all sold out,” says Billings. Creating a simple schedule also means you can organise a mix of fun-filled and more relaxed days, which will help keep everyone in good spirits. Why not do some research online together, so your child can see pictures of where they’ll be visiting? Ask them to point out things they recognise when you get there, and when you return you can make a scrapbook together with the photos you’ve taken or souvenirs they’ve collected.

“Taking part in something together is great fun and good for family bonding,” says Pavey. “We recently took part in the Simplyhealth Great Bristol Family Run. Our kids absolutely loved it, they really seemed to soak up the positive atmosphere. It was uplifting to see so many families running together and enjoying the experience.”

Get creative Pavey says it’s lovely to enjoy activities in the garden or local park together, like ball games, tag or frisbee. Another fun idea is to make up obstacle courses or treasure hunts.

Get the kids involved Ask the children what they’re interested in and if there are any new activities they’d like to try. “Ask them to suggest activities that the family could do together,” Pavey urges. “It’s nice for children to feel like they’re contributing to making decisions on ways that the family can enjoy being active.” AUG/SEPT 2019 23

After arriving for work, new recruits are kitted out in uniform and given their daily task lists, before being taken to the heart of the action – in the specially-recreated keeper kitchen, workshop and potting shed. Riding on mini diggers, young engineers can show their creative side in planning and building the perfect home for a porcupine, before potting up the ideal plants for the spiky residents to sniff, snack on and roll around in.

“Kids can venture into the Zoo’s new Animal Adventure children’s zoo and play-zone” Next, the Zoo’s expert vets need support from young nurses to carry out health checks on new meerkat arrivals, before keepers enlist their help in preparing a hearty lunch for the coatis – roleplaying a real day in the life of ZSL’s expert teams. Once the uniforms come off, kids can venture into the Zoo’s new Animal Adventure children’s zoo and play-zone, before exploring the rest of ZSL London Zoo – home to more than 19,000 animals in the heart of the capital. Zoo it Yourself is part of a whole year of interactive behind-the-scenes activities at ZSL London Zoo. A great value day out, Zoo it Yourself and all extra activities are included in the entry price. Take an Animal Adventure this summer New Animal Adventure playzone opens at ZSL London Zoo this summer

Z

SL London Zoo is inviting children on a globetrotting journey of discovery this summer – with the launch of Animal Adventure, a new children’s play area at the heart of London’s Zoo. Kids can delve into the secret and surprising lives of animals and follow some of nature’s most epic journeys - encountering meerkats, porcupines, eagle owls, mongoose, coatis and more along the way. Capturing little ones’ imaginations, child-sized hot air balloons and a replica HMS Beagle will ‘transport’ them to animal kingdoms around the world, connecting youngsters to animals through magical up-close experiences and adventurous play. Kids will follow in Darwin’s daring footsteps - navigating swinging bridges, slides and ladders aboard HMS Beagle in the Zoo’s new adventure themed playpark. Little ones can climb like a coati

and reach new heights on the mini climbing wall, or soar like a macaw through the treetop rope course, before hitching a wild ride on the animal-themed sit on springers. A new open-air amphitheatre is the place to go for fascinating daily talks, where zookeepers reveal how llamas trek across the Andes, and why young meerkats have to set out on their own to find a mate. Young animal adventurers are able to spot the Zoo’s resident pygmy goats, kune kune pigs, llamas and donkeys as they set off on regular walks around the area, with plenty of opportunities to meet ZSL’s expert keepers and get the inside story on their work. A watery Splash Zone keep globetrotters cool in the summer sunshine, while parents relax with refreshments outside the new café, where they can keep a watchful eye on junior explorers as they play and learn. Chief Operating Officer for ZSL London Zoo, Kathryn England, said: “Animal Adventure has been designed to help young animal lovers develop an understanding and concern for nature to carry into adulthood. Built on the site of the Zoo’s original Children’s Zoo - the first of its kind when it opened in 1938 - Animal Adventure retains its spirit of bringing children closer to nature through play.” The ultimate experience for young pups and their parents this summer! here’s nothing like having a little bit of ‘me time’ when you’re pregnant - so a spa day is a great way to revitalise and get prepared for your new little arrival! While mums-to-be may be the most deserving of some TLC, finding the right beauty treatments when pregnant can be difficult. It’s not always clear which beauty, spa or cosmetic treatments are safe to have during pregnancy. As a rule, you should avoid any heat treatments while pregnant – such as the sauna, hot tubs, steam rooms and body wraps – as your body temperature should not be increased. But you can still indulge in some R&R and enjoy treatments such as manicures, pedicures, most facials and pregnancy massages. The Dorchester Spa offer treatments designed for pregnant ladies – aimed to cleanse the mind and soul in a private, soothing space in which to find some therapeutic calm. They have crafted their space around every desire so you are free to find your own way to take time for yourself, whatever that may be.

Incorporating Minimalism In The Home words: Grace Tindall, founder, Scandibørn

U

ncluttered and streamlined homes have hugely increased in popularity following the Netflix documentary ‘Tidying Up’ by Marie Kondo. At Scandibørn, we are huge fans of that minimalist, pared-back aesthetic but while we can only dream of having a fully decluttered home by following the ‘KonMari’ method, we thought some simple steps on incorporating minimalism in the home were important to share. We love the whole ethos that surrounds Scandinavian living and interiors. It places value on buying products that will last years and fulfil different needs as our lives change. We’d spent a long time getting our home just perfect and having children seemed to open the door into a whole range of eye sores that I didn’t want lying round our living room. Don’t get me wrong, our son Harry still has a whole hoard of plastic toys, they are just stowed away in stylish storage bags! We felt there was a gap in the market for people like us who wanted to be able to create beautiful, playful and stylish spaces that fitted with their contemporary homes. Decluttering and clearing your space has huge health benefits. Not only do you feel calm and at peace when you have a streamlined home, the notion of Tidy Home, Tidy Mind comes to the fore. ‘Spark Joy’ is not a new concept. Live by the William Morris quote from the 1800s which is still as relevant today “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” Take small steps and be realistic with simple changes that can affect the way you live forever. Simplicity - simplicity in the home really is key. Keep rooms uncluttered and allow the space to breathe. The first rule of Scandinavian design is to keep the base neutral and add colour through accessories for that minimalist space that emulates a calm, peaceful environment. Most people respond

34 AUG/SEPT 2019

well to light and airy minimalist spaces. Storage - Make sure everything has its place. Live by the mantra ‘don’t put it down, put it away’ which means spaces don’t become crowded and cluttered. Children have a tendency to collect knick knacks at an alarming rate. Find a place for everything and do regular clear outs of their toys and games when they are not around. Invest in stylish storage solutions from baskets to lockers, shelving and pretty boxes to keep clutter hidden from sight, making tidying up a breeze. Imagine the destination - Before you start buying anything for the home including the nursery, imagine where the item will go. Think about how you want it to feel and where that said item will live. Do you want the space to feel uncluttered or cosy? This gives you a great starting point for designing any kind of space. Items that spark joy - At Scandibørn, we are in absolute agreement with the Marie Kondo sentiment that items in your home should ‘Spark Joy’ and give you that warm feeling when you pick it up. This should continue into all areas of the home including the children’s bedrooms/playrooms. Keep hold of these all of the items that ‘spark joy’ and donate or gift the rest. Investment pieces - Invest in a few high quality items around the home rather than filling the space up with multiple objects. This could be anything from multifunctional cabinets like the Cam Cam Copenhagen changing table which converts to a dresser to shelving systems. We love the Rafa Kids XL Shelf for that minimalist Scandinavian design or the iconic String shelves, all available at Scandibørn. Decluttering is hard and comes easier to some more than others. Take some simple steps and make small changes that will change the way you live forever.

presents THE BABY DIOR AUTUMN/WINTER 2019 COLLECTION

T

he ball was one of Christian Dior’s great passions. It was at Granville, in Normandy, in a villa perched on a cliff top overlooking the sea, that his sense of wonder developed. In this enchanting setting, his childhood was punctuated by flower festivals and carnivals. He took part by making not only his own costumes but those of his friends, too. One year, he disguised himself as Pierrot alongside his elder brother; in another he posed for a photograph wearing a large straw hat. His fondness for costumes would continue into adulthood, especially during charades evenings organized in Paris where guests had fun turning themselves into “all the characters of history with the help of shades, bedspreads and curtains.” In Paris, he frequented the artistic avant-garde of the time and nourished his creativity with the stimulating atmosphere that imbued the air: “Parties like that are genuine works of art: people may be annoyed by them, by the very fact that they are on a grand scale – nevertheless they are desirable, and important even in the history of our time, because they produce the authentic sense of popular enjoyment,” he wrote in his memoirs. In 1949, he attended the Bal des Rois et des Reines as an impressive king of the animals. Two years later, he appeared disguised as a ghost of Venice for the ball given, in the heart of La Serenissima, by Charles de Beistegui, at the Palazzo Labia. On this occasion, with Salvador Dalí and his wife, Gala, he was responsible for a procession of characters at the entrance called “The Giants”. The ball represents the distillation of a magic moment, a celebration during which anything is possible. It is this very idea that inspired Cordelia de Castellane in designing the 2019 Fall-Winter collection. The Creative Director of Baby Dior was also influenced by events that peppered the 20th century when it came to devising her own imaginary balls whose evocative names mix childhood games

with the world of artists: the Bal de la Forêt, Bal Cache-cache, Bal de la Bibliothèque Rose, Bal des Artistes, as well as the Bal de Proust. Capturing the excitement of a party for little girls, one lit up by laughter and innocent naughtiness, the Creative Director designed outfits that are both festive and comfortable, with playful details such as dice-shaped buttons, bee patches or even little cat heads embroidered on a dress. The materials are also unexpected: tulle with hand-painted motifs, glossy wool, shiny neoprene and sparkling velvet. A round Dior Oblique canvas bag makes an appearance. This new accessory, borrowed from the women’s wardrobe, gives a fresh twist to any look.

“Capturing the excitement of a party for little girls, one lit up by laughter and innocent naughtiness, the Creative Director designed outfits that are both festive and comfortable” Checkerboard black and white, a giant chess game, and merry trompe-l’oeil effects make these children’s looks all the more enchanting. Guided by a clever little cat, who crops up on trousers, shoes or signature buttons, these two-tone Cache-Cache creations feature powdery shades for girls and handsome gradations of grey for boys. The colour palette ranges from green to red, without forgetting grey, one of Monsieur Dior’s favourite shades. 160-162 New Bond St, Mayfair, W1S 2UE. MUMS OF MAYFAIR

M

ums of Mayfair (MoM) was founded in 2018 by Hajira Rana, with the aim of bringing together a socially active and influential group of women working together to support and inspire other women around the globe. MoM is a platform that bridges the gap between women in need and women in a position to support through exclusive charity and luxury brand partnerships that raise awareness around many of the challenges faced by women globally. In becoming a mum to her beautiful daughter in 2015, Hajira Rana quickly realised that there was a big gap in the market to unite women from Mayfair and Central London on a global scale and drive forward the message of empowerment. This gave Hajira the idea to launch a global mum’s network in Mums Of Mayfair and in addition their international counterparts Mums of Manhattan and Mums of Middle-East. Mums of Mayfair is a collective of over 50 women based within Mayfair and Central London representing a diverse mix of HNWI’s, entrepreneurs, digital influencers, activists, innovators and professionals, who donate their time, knowledge, professional expertise and financial resource to support other women and charitable causes on MoM’s radar. The community has a

combined online audience of +2M and growing. Hajira Rana, MoM Founder, said: “I truly believe being socially responsible as mothers is one of the most important roles we play – Mums Of Mayfair started off with the vision of one person, and now we are a collective force of women united through our passion for social change and empowerment – I know that together we can make a difference using our networks and knowledge to help others in a very positive way.” To date Mums of Mayfair have raised a considerable amount for a variety of amazing causes including Concern Worldwide UK, Ickle Pickles, Malaika and many others. The group has successfully collaborated with luxury brands such as Rolls Royce Motor Cars, Maddox Art Gallery, Harrods, Moda Operandi, Roksanda, and many more in support of charitable endeavours. Hajira Adds: “I truly believe that if we contribute to a better tomorrow – we contribute to a better world and act as role models for our future generations – I am so excited for the future of Mums Of Mayfair and some of the positive change we can encourage together as women.” For further information visit: www.mumsofmayfair.uk Follow @MumsOfMayfair

WINNING THE LOST PROPERTY BATTLE!

H

ave you ever had to track down lost property? How often have our children come home looking sheepish because they have lost something at school? Once too often for many parents. The brand new (or even old) jumper, blazer, hat, shoes or even the mobile phone, are items that parents can least afford to replace. In fact it would be preferable to never have to face replacing any item. I would imagine there is no mother that has not drilled the kids on the need to “take more responsibility for their things”. The majority of children are capable of looking after their things and can certainly be taught the importance of this skill from an early age. What’s more, as parents we can make this learning experience easier for children by clearly labeling their possessions so that if they are misplaced they can be easily identified by the child. Labels can help children to be more organised and responsible. Companies such as My Name Label provide a wide range of products designed specifically for this purpose. Colourful labels which the children can help to design, with their own lettering style and fun pictures, enable them to readily identify what belongs to them and keep track of it, from durable stickers for lunch boxes and drinks bottles etc to iron on clothing labels for all their uniform. This gives them a better sense of control and responsibility for their belongings. Schools, kindergartens and childcare centres all require children’s belongings to be clearly named, usually to help staff but it also makes life easier for

the children. My Name Label have a selection of value packs that make labeling everything easy but don’t cost the earth. How nice it would be to hear “Hi mum, I lost my jumper today, but I found it again all by myself!” to which you reply “Well done!” And well done mum for making it easier by having the jumper clearly named. Top 3 Wellness design tips for children’s bedrooms Sleep

Sleep is extremely important for the development of babies and children. When a child lacks sleep they often become more fussy, disruptive and their concentration levels decreases. Encourage your children to sleep by developing a bedtime routine at the same time each day. Ensure that the environment for sleeping is right. Create a dark room to avoid glaring streetlights with black out curtains or blinds. If your child prefers light, consider the use of a night lamp. Ensure that the room is well ventilated, and there is minimum noise or distractions. Children’s beds need to be fun and must encourage them to use it. Mid-sleepers, cabin bunks, and house beds are extremely popular choices for younger children. The mattress must also be comfortable and durable to give them a good night’s sleep and last for at least 5 years. I would highly recommend natural fibre bedding such as cottons, bamboo, silk and linen. Polyester mixes can cause irritation to your child’s skin and increases perspiration. It’s extremely easy to get caught up with the beautiful looking bedding or something that is reasonably priced but do ensure your child’s beds sheets are made with a natural material to enhance their sleeping conditions.

Bringing nature into their room Humans have an innate attraction to the natural world and natural forms. Plants, trees, the ocean, and flowers inspire us to think and create, and often heals us. It has been said that “patients recovering from surgery in a room with a view of a tree can recover more quickly and experience less pain than those without one.” – Lily Bernheimer. Plants also provides oxygen and some plants such as aloe vera, spider plants, ferns, and palms, purifies the air. The larger the leaves the quicker the air is purified. Plants are a great way to teach children about nature and how they help us. It’s an ideal way to teach toddlers how to care for plants and the world around them. Children enjoy having the responsibility of caring for something. At the age of 3, I gave my daughter an Aloe Vera plant; she is very protective of it and enjoys watering it occasionally. She’s also concerned about its growth and how big it will get. Plants are an excellent way to bring nature indoors, 54 AUG/SEPT 2019

as well as adding to the aesthetics of a child’s room. Depending on the age of your child, there are various ways to incorporate greenery in their bedrooms or playrooms. There are hanging planters, wall planters, floor planters or plant pots, that are suitable for a table top display. I only recommend using artificial plants and flowers in a playroom, for visual aesthetics and practicality, where it is a highly used area by babies.

Reading Nooks Reading helps with communication and encourages empathy within children; as they learn about the nature of different characters and how each reacts in different situations. Reading helps them to better understand people and the world around them, it encourages creativity and hones intelligence. Reading Nooks or Book nooks can be incorporated into children’s rooms in very creative ways. When designing a reading corner, I tend to place them in areas flooded with natural light; by the window or under a sky light. Alternatively, a reading nook needs to have its own light to avoid children straining their eyes when reading. Make it, colourful with comfortable cushions, so that children will be drawn to this area of the room. Medina King | Child Wellness designer www.mkkidsinteriors.com

Childrens’ meal times AVOIDING FUSSY EATERS

Being more relaxed, offering praise and learning about fruit and veg all help. WORDS: Claire Spreadbury, Press Association

T

here’s nothing more frustrating than watching a child depressingly pick at a meal you’ve slaved over. But kids are often fussy eaters. Even those who start off well can go through phases where they decide they don’t like meat, vegetables or anything they haven’t seen before. Dr Frances Maratos, reader in emotion science, and Jayne Trovati, a PhD student researching this area, both at the University of Derby, reveal their top tips... 1. Ensure fresh fruit is on display at home to promote healthy snacking. 2. Don’t let children snack before a main meal. If you give them a snack 30 minutes before dinner, for example, they’ll be more likely to ‘pick’ or show less interest in the mealtime food. 3. Try to make mealtimes pleasant and get the family together (ideally around a table, if possible). 4. Try serving meals in courses. This doesn’t need to be fancy, but could consist of cherry tomatoes, carrots, peppers and/or celery as a ‘starter’. This encourages toddlers and children to eat a wider variety of vegetables. 5. Always try to include fruit and vegetables in main meals, such as carrots in spaghetti bolognese, or sliced fruit with a small amount of custard for dessert. 6. Don’t use plates that separate different foods. This encourages the idea of ‘contamination’. Instead, ensure pasta dishes and recipes like chilli and rice are presented as mixed entities. If you do present food separately, you will need to slowly start to address this (little by little). 7. If your toddler or child dislikes a food, try to ensure that a very small amount is included on their plate, but do not force them to eat it. Simply getting them used to the expectation of the food being on their plate is a start. 8. Do not worry if your child still refuses to eat a particular food. Repeated exposure (without pressure to eat the food) is key. Most children tend to grow out of fussy eating. What’s essential is providing a safe, pleasant mealtime experience. 9. Read stories about fruits and vegetables with your child, to get them familiar with these foods in a safe, relaxed environment. 10. Don’t use pressure to encourage eating, as this creates anxiety which can exacerbate fussy eating. 11. Last, but not least, use modelling behaviour and positive reinforcement to demonstrate eating expectations. Be consistent too - i.e. don’t expect your child to eat something you will not!

F

rom sausages to cereals and chocolate to cake, dairy products can crop up in a huge range of food kids tend to love - so for the increasing number of children who are allergic or intolerant to dairy products, avoiding it can seem tricky. Allergy UK estimates that cows’ milk allergy - which frequently goes undiagnosed, or takes a long time to be identified - affects 3-6% of infants and young children, making it the most common paediatric food allergy. Symptoms can including wheezing, vomiting, hives and digestive problems, which occur minutes to hours after consuming milk, or something containing milk (in very serious, but thankfully rare cases, milk allergy can even cause anaphylaxis). Allergies occur when the body’s immune system has an abnormal response to a certain trigger (although cows’ milk is often the culprit in dairy allergy, milk from sheep and goats can sometimes cause a reaction too), and is not the same as milk intolerance, known as non-allergic hypersensitivity, which doesn’t involve the immune system. With an intolerance, symptoms tend to include things like bloating, gas or diarrhoea after consuming milk - and they’re often slower to appear, possibly flaring up a number of hours later. Thankfully, most children outgrow their milk allergy by around age five, but managing it in the meantime can be troublesome. It’s important to remember that dairy products are an important part of children’s diet, providing crucial nutrients including proteins, minerals and vitamins essential for growth, bone and dental health, so if you do think your child needs to avoid it, speak to a doctor about it - they can advise on how to go about managing symptoms, while ensuring your youngster still gets the nutrients they need. Here, Michelle Diana Lowe - whose new pocket-sized children’s book, Dairy Free and Happy!, is packed with advice on navigating the anxieties and challenges of dairy allergy, shares 10 top tips for helping children cope with the condition...

Children with dairy allergies Any food allergy can be overwhelming to manage - but there are lots of things that can help. Author Michelle Diana Lowe shares some handy hints with Lisa Salmon. 1. Eat healthy Eat lots of fruit and vegetables at home and school, and have a healthy, balanced diet. If you need support with this, ask your mum or dad to take you to see your GP to get a referred to a dietitian. 2. Be positive Focus on the food you can eat, rather than what you can’t eat. “Be positive and remember that food is your friend and not your foe,” stresses Lowe. 3. Talk and hug Ask mum or dad for a snug hug when you need to be comforted. This will help you feel happier. Talking to your parents about how you feel helps too - it’s much better to speak about your feelings than to bottle them up. 4. Plan for parties If you’re invited to a friend’s party, ask your parents to speak to the other child’s parent well in advance so they can provide dairy-free foods on the day. This will enable you to feel part of the celebrations. If you don’t know the party organiser, take your own food, to avoid potential problems. 5. Dairy-free sun protection Even sun lotion can contain dairy ingredients, which can cause hives or rashes in those allergic to dairy. So, in the summer or on holiday, make sure you read sun cream labels and only apply sun cream that

contains no dairy products. 6. Keep hydrated Drink plenty of water, it can help flush your system and support the elimination of the allergens your body reacts to. 7. Read labels Read food, drink and skin product labels carefully. Anything with lactose, milk proteins, casein or any other dairy product isn’t suitable for you. If in doubt, ask your parents or shop staff. 8. Have fun Play games, laugh, and have fun. Enjoy spending quality time with your family. Plan days out and have special family time. It will help you feel better if your dairy allergy has been making you miserable. 9. Tell the teacher Tell your teacher about your dairy allergy, as it’s important they know your dietary needs. Also, inform the teacher of any medication you need, and take medication to school if necessary. 10. Know your numbers Make sure you and your family know the contact numbers for the emergency services in case you need immediate medical help - whichever country you’re in. The Best First Meals for Babies Dr Sophie Niedermaier-Patramani, In-House Paediatrician and Co-Founder of Little Tummy

I

ntroducing solids is an exciting time for parents and babies. Babies love to discover new textures and flavours and parents are curious to find out about their little one’s preferences. Unfortunately, parents are (willingly or not) confronted with a vast amount of confusing advice on what foods to start with. Luckily, the most recent research has a clear stand on this, as more and more studies in the past few years have been looking at the influence our first solids have on our eating habits later on in life.

Start with vegetables Dark leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach or broccoli, are a great way to start babies on solids because they are abundant in vitamins, micronutrients and fiber. Research has shown that the earlier and more often we give bitter-tasting vegetables to our babies, the more likely they are to eat them later on in life. Starting off with a healthy choice will make it a lot easier for babies to develop healthy eating habits later on.

Embrace the ‘veg face’ Did you that it can take up to 15 times until your baby will accept a new taste? A lot of babies are hesitant to try bitter flavours in the beginning and will make a funny face. This is a natural reaction, the more often we expose our babies to bitter tastes, the more likely they will eventually accept them.

Choose fresh foods over heatprocessed baby foods Introducing your baby to the authentic tastes of fresh vegetable and fruit from early on will support them to become a healthy eater. Ambient pouches and jars from the supermarket (organic or not) are heat-processed; therefore, lose the authentic taste of the ingredients. At Little Tummy, we introduce a new generation of organic, cold-pressed baby foods, maintaining the authentic taste of the ingredients, as well as vitamins and micronutrients.

Include Iron-rich foods Babies slowly increase their iron requirements over the first year of life. Around the age of 6 months, breast milk doesn’t meet these requirements anymore but most babies still maintain normal levels of red cells, the main consumers of iron in our body. It is around this time that we should introduce iron-rich sources to complement the nutrients in breast milk (or formula). Great iron-rich first foods are, again, dark leafy vegetables, but also oats, sweet potato and eggs. Little Tummy delivers organic, cold-pressed baby foods straight to parents’ doorstep. Founded by Dr Sophie Niedermaier-Patramani and Nadine Hellmann, the company is backed by Natalia Vodianova, philanthropist and mother of 5 children. A weekly subscription starts at £20.00, one-off orders start at £25.00. Nation-wide free delivery. www.littletummy.co 58 AUG/SEPT 2019

BREAST HEALTH Dr Angela Rai from The London General Practice discusses breast health Breast Lumps Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. Most breast lumps are not cancerous, but it is always best to have them checked by your GP. Non-cancerous causes of breast lumps include fibroadenomas and cysts. Fibroadenomas are solid growths of tissue and are the most common type of benign breast lump. Cysts are sacs of fluid that build up in breast tissue. You can have one or more cysts and they can vary in size. Symptoms of breast cancer to be aware of are: • a new lump or area of thickened tissue in the breasts or armpits • bloodstained nipple discharge • dimpling on the skin of your breasts • a rash on or around the nipple • a change in the appearance of your nipple, such as nipple inversion. Male breast cancer is rare but can occur and is associated with age over 60, high oestrogen levels, exposure to radiation and the breast cancer gene. Breast pain or mastalgia is not usually a sign of breast cancer. Breast pain can be linked to hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle and the menopause. Medication such as the oral contraceptive pill, some antidepressants and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can cause breast pain. Breast pain can be eased by • taking simple analgesia such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, or rubbing painkilling gel on the breasts • wear a properly fitted bra during the day and a soft bra to sleep in • taking evening primrose oil may help with breast pain. However, if simple measures do not alleviate the symptoms, medical advice should be sought. Mastitis is a condition where the breast tissue becomes inflamed and painful. There may be a red, swollen, hard area on the breast that is hot and painful to touch. A fever or nipple discharge may develop. It is more common in breast feeding women but can also occur in non-breastfeeding women if the breast becomes infected due to sore or cracked nipples for example. It is important to seek medical attention. If the mastitis is infected it

60 AUG/SEPT 2019

will require treatment with antibiotics and if there is an abscess it is likely to require surgical drainage.

Self-help measures include • getting plenty of rest and staying well hydrated • using over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce any pain or fever • if you’re breastfeeding, continuing to feed your baby and making sure they are properly attached to your breast

Seeing your GP If you have symptoms you are concerned about, your GP will examine you and if required will send you for further tests such as a breast ultrasound or type of breast x-ray (mammogram). A biopsy can be performed if necessary; a small needle is inserted into the breast lump to remove cells for testing. These are sent off for analysis and the results usually take around a week. Treatment of breast lumps depend on the cause, but it is best to seek medical attention if you notice a lump or any other concerning symptoms.

Discovering the presence of a lump: what next?

D

iscovering the presence of a lump in your breast can be an extremely worrying time. Breast symptoms are very common and the majority of patients who attend the Breast Health Centre at King Edward VII’s Hospital have benign conditions (meaning they do not have breast cancer). However, although benign breast lumps are far more common than malignant ones (cancerous), breast cancer is still the most common cancer in women in the United Kingdom, with 1 in 8 women in England expected to develop the disease in her lifetime. Over 80 per cent of patients seen at the Breast Health Centre with a lump have a benign lump, but a full urgent triple assessment of any breast lump is highly recommended to rule out cancer. It is quite often that a cancerous lump may look or feel the same as a benign one, and only triple-assessment in a Rapid Access specialised breast clinic would make the diagnosis. Triple-assessment breast screening with a multi-disciplinary team on-site is considered the gold standard and includes rapid assessment by a leading breast consultant, breast imaging (mammogram &/or ultrasound) and cytology/ histology assessments all in the same place at the same time. Sue Milner is the Breast Service Manager at King Edward VII’s and explains the significance of having everything in one place: “We offer a one-stop clinic here at King Edward VII’s Hospital. This starts with a mammogram; if there is cause for concern an ultrasound will be performed. From there a biopsy will be taken to be examined, all during the same visit.” If you are concerned about your breast health and would like the advice of a specialist

tips for better sleep during pregnancy Empty your headspace before you go to bed. We all have busy lives. There’s always something else waiting to get done or a gazillion little things you need to organise in your head on a day to day basis in order to get the logistics of modern life to actually work. Some neuroscientists claim that an average human has about 50 000 to 70 000 thoughts in their head per day. No wonder it can feel a little busy up theresometimes ha-ha.Have you ever gone to bed after a long day, but as soon as your head hits the pillow you suddenly feel wide-awake? Like, no matter how hard you try your brain simply won’t shut off ? That is actually your brain trying to tell you that you need to de-clutter upstairs! To set yourself up for good sleep you need to allow your brain and body to winddownafter a busy day. Turn off your phone, computer screen or TV for the last hour to half hour before you go to bed. Read a book or listen to some relaxing music, and take 5 minutes to write down everything (no matter how little!) you think you need to remember for the next day on a piece of paper. That way you empty your headspace and make space for some nice, restfulsleep.

Beware of sleep debt You need way more sleep than usual when you’re pregnant. Why? Because you are actually growing a tiny little human in there and that takes a lot of energy from your body. Sleep debt is the difference between the amounts of sleep you should be getting and the amount you actually get. The good news is that, like with all debt, with some persistent work you can catch up and repay it– though it won’t happen in one extended sleep marathon. Taking a small daytime nap every day plus tacking on an extra hour or two of sleep during the night is what is going to help you stay in good sleep balance.

Keep it cool After you conceive, your body temperature will go up by an average of nearly one degree due to an increase in your body metabolism. Now, that may 70 AUG/SEPT 2019

not sound like a lot but believe me it is noticeable. Your body naturally recognises that it has to take care of two, and thus increases it’s normal activities leading to an increase in body temperature. Keep your bedroom extra cool and use linens that allow for proper circulation of air. Also, avoid exercise, warm baths/showers and caffeinated drinks the last 2-3 hours before you go to bed.

Feel free

“You need way more sleep than usual when you’re pregnant”

There’s nothing more irritating than the feeling of restrictive clothing when you’re trying to relax, right? Add a growing belly into that equation and it can feel near impossible to ignore that irritating bra or that uncomfortably curious brief when you’re trying to sleep. My best recommendation is that you sleep naked. No clothes to irritate you or restrict circulation in your body, and as a bonus it is also healthier for the “downstairs” department. If you are not comfortable with sleeping naked, at least make sure to wear something in stretchy, natural and breathable material. As you approach the end of your last trimester, turning over in bed can get quite challenging and your mattress may feel like it has Velcro on it. If you don’t have a partner who’s happy to wake up and give you a much-needed push as you roll over, try sleeping on a silk satin sheet with silk bottom or brief.

The magic is in the proper support Sleeping when you’re pregnant is different. Your body is in constant change and as your belly grows you will feel the need for body support during sleep. Using the bbhugme pregnancy pillow from early on in your pregnancy will not only help you sleep and rest better, but it can also help in the prevention of common low back- and pelvic pain (SPD) associated with pregnancy. Thousands of women have already tried the bbhugme pregnancy pillow and they love it! If there is ever a time in your life you should invest in sleep, it’s during your pregnancy. Remember, you are sleeping for two now. Dr. Hilde, Founder of bbhugme www.bbhugme.no

Health benefits of

breastfeeding

E

xclusive breastfeeding (giving your baby breast milk only) is recommended for around the first six months (26 weeks) of your baby’s life. After that, giving your baby breast milk alongside other food will help them continue to grow and develop healthily. Breastfed babies have: less chance of diarrhoea and vomiting fewer chest and ear infections less chance of being constipated less likelihood of becoming obese and therefore developing type 2 diabetes and other obesity-related illnesses later in life less chance of developing eczema Any amount of breastfeeding has a positive effect. The longer you breastfeed, the longer the protection lasts and the greater the benefits. Infant formula doesn’t provide the same protection. Breast milk adapts as your baby grows to meet your baby’s changing needs. Health benefits of breastfeeding for you: lowers your risk of getting breast and ovarian cancer naturally uses up to 500 calories a day saves money – infant formula, the sterilising equipment and feeding equipment can be costly can help to build a strong bond between you and your baby Exclusive breastfeeding can also delay the return of your periods.

COMMON BREASTFEEDING MISCONCEPTIONS Many myths and stories about breastfeeding are passed around by family and friends, but some are inaccurate or out of date. See how many you’ve heard, and separate fact from fiction: 72 AUG/SEPT 2019

Myth 1: “It’s not that popular - only a few women do it in this country” Fact: 81% of women in the UK start breastfeeding. Myth 2: “Breastfeeding will make my breasts saggy” Fact: Breastfeeding doesn’t cause your breasts to sag, but the ageing process and losing or putting on weight can all have an effect. Myth 3: “Infant formula is basically the same as breast milk” Fact: Infant formula isn’t the same as breast milk. It’s not a living product so it doesn’t have the antibodies, living cells, enzymes or hormones that protect your baby from infections and diseases in childhood and also later in life. Myth 4: “People don’t like women breastfeeding in public” Fact: Surveys actually show that the majority of people don’t mind women breastfeeding in public at all. The more it’s done, the more normal it will become. Myth 5: “Breastfeeding is easy for some women, but some don’t produce enough milk” Fact: Almost all women are physically able to breastfeed. It’s a skill that every woman needs to learn and practice. It happens more quickly for some women than others, but nearly all women can produce the amount of milk their baby needs. Myth 6: “If I breastfeed I can’t have a sex life” Fact: After you’ve had your baby you’ll decide when it’s time to have sex with your partner. The same hormone that helps to release your milk for the baby (oxytocin) is also made when you have sex. When having sex you may leak a little breast milk. This is normal.

CHANGING FROM BOTTLE TO BREAST If you’ve already been formula feeding for a few days but you’ve changed your mind and want to breastfeed, speak to your midwife or health visitor as soon as possible for support on how to build up your milk supply. Or call the National Breastfeeding Helpline on 0300 100 0212.

MEDICAL REASONS FOR NOT BREASTFEEDING Occasionally, there are clinical reasons for not breastfeeding. For example, if you have HIV or, in rare cases, you’re taking certain types of medication that may harm your baby. If you’re not sure whether you should breastfeed your baby, speak to your midwife or health visitor for information and support.

COULD formula feeding BE a good idea FOR MY BABY? Feeding can be an anxious topic for parents - but when should you worry? WORDS: Lisa Salmon.

I’ve just had my second baby and he doesn’t feed nearly as much as his older brother did when he was a baby. Will he get more nutrition if I switch from breastfeeding to formula? Dr Clare Llewellyn, co-author with Dr Hayley Syrad of Baby Food Matters: What Science Says About How To Give Your Child Healthy Eating Habits For Life (Yellow Kite, £16.99), says: “Milk feeding can be a source of enormous anxiety especially if your baby has little interest in feeding. But we know from research with about 4,800 British infant twins that babies differ hugely in their appetites for milk, right from the beginning of life. “This is largely down to their genes; some babies are born with a hearty appetite, want to feed regularly, and are more demanding about being fed. Other babies are much less interested in milk; they seem to take forever over a feed and are easily distracted. You simply have two children with different appetites. This is perfectly normal and doesn’t necessarily indicate any problems. “If you’re breastfeeding, you can’t tell how much milk your baby’s actually taking, and the number of feeds per day can vary a lot between babies. His growth is the best indication of whether he’s getting enough nutrition, not necessarily the number or length of breastfeeds. If his growth’s fine, there’s no need to worry. “Your son won’t get more nutrition if you switch him to formula milk. Breast milk provides your baby with the best possible nutrition during his first few months of life. Not only will it boost his immune system and support his brain development, but research also suggests it’ll help him develop good appetite regulation too. “The important thing is to understand what type of feeder your baby is and respond appropriately; feed him promptly every time he signals he’s hungry, and stop when he indicates he’s had enough. This is called responsive feeding and will help your son learn what hunger and fullness feel like. If your baby has a poor appetite, pay close attention to his hunger cues and respond by offering a feed. Don’t force him to take more milk than he wants, as this could make him feel stressed. As long as he’s gaining weight at a healthy rate, there’s no need to worry or switch to formula milk.”

Where can i go for breastfeeding advice?

L

WORDS: Lisa Salmon, Press Association

ots of new mums need help and support around feeding - which a new NHS Start4Life service aims to provide. “I’m trying to breastfeed my new baby but am struggling because it hurts, and I don’t think she’s getting enough milk. I’m embarrassed to ask for help from my midwife again are there any other things I should try before I give up?” Viv Bennett, chief nurse at Public Health England, says: “Mothers and babies learn to breastfeed together and it’s normal to have questions and sometimes experience setbacks. “It’s important that you seek advice so you can find what works best for you both. Your midwife and health visitor have helped many mothers to breastfeed and know that sometimes mothers need to ask for advice more than once, so don’t be embarrassed. “If your baby is feeding well, they should have a large mouthful of breast and take long sucks, with pauses from time to time. The first few sucks may feel strong, but shouldn’t hurt. When your baby has finished feeding, they should come off your breast by themselves. If they’re producing at least six wet nappies every 24 hours (from day five onwards) and gaining the right amount of weight, you can be reassured they’re getting enough milk, but if you’re worried, speak to your midwife or health visitor. “New research has revealed that post-birth, nearly a quarter of new mothers wished they had read about and were more prepared for breastfeeding, and 26% of those who’d given breast milk to their first child wished they’d known that asking for help can make a real difference. “Although nearly a third of mothers felt embarrassed about asking for help with breastfeeding from healthcare professionals, two-thirds believed access to 24/7 breastfeeding support, such as a phoneline, website of chatbot, would make mothers more likely to have a positive experience of breastfeeding, as well as more likely to decide to try breastfeeding and breastfeed for longer. “Now a new service, the Breastfeeding Friend from Start4Life (facebook.com/Start4LifeBreastfeedingFriend), has been launched to help new mothers. There’s also the Amazon Alexa voice service, providing NHS-approved advice any time of the day or night, and there’s lots of information on the Start4Life website and from the National Breastfeeding Helpline on 0300 100 0212.” AUG/SEPT 2019 73

Tip: If you would like a stronger suction, squeeze the bulb on the top ring and the bottom ring if you prefer a gentler suction. Step 4: Once you are finished feeding, place the NatureBond Breast Pump Stopper if you own one in the pump to prevent any spills. Step 5: Clean your NatureBond after every use using a breastmilk soap and allow it to air dry.

New Mum MOT

uring pregnancy, labour and birth, a woman’s body undergoes significant changes. The pelvic floor and abdominal muscles have been stretched and the body is put under immense physical strain during childbirth. These bodily changes can lead to problems such as pelvic girdle pain, rectus diastasis (tummy muscle separation), lower back pain and difficulty with bladder control. The New Mum MOT is a postnatal assessment designed to empower women back to fitness and activity with the aim of preventing the development of long term childbirth related issues. It is important that women do not feel embarrassed to discuss any post-natal problems they may be experiencing or feel that there is no help available. At Parkside Hospital, our Women’s Health Physiotherapist specialises in the assessment and treatment of these specific post-natal problems. They offer a supportive environment to discuss concerns, followed by a tailored assessment. With this information a goal and treatment plan will be developed taking into account your specific needs.

WHY HAVE A NEW MUM MOT? Many women feel they have unanswered questions after their 6 week check. Such as: • Am I doing my pelvic floor exercises correctly? • Can I do sit ups and the plank to help get my tummy back in shape? • When can I return to my usual levels of exercise? • Sometimes I leak when I cough or sneeze. Is this 78 AUG/SEPT 2019

normal? These are important questions and a New Mum MOT gives you an opportunity to put your mind at rest! Research suggests that there will be a natural healing of a rectus diastasis up to 8 weeks postnatal; however there will be no further improvement without interventions such as physiotherapy after this period. A New Mum MOT will ensure you’re doing the correct exercises at the right time, avoid overloading the abdominal muscles which may delay healing and show you the right way of doing every day movements to prevent low back pain now and in the future.

WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE? • Core strengthening (1:1 or Pilates) • Soft tissue release • Manual therapy • Acupuncture • Hydrotherapy • Bladder retraining • Pelvic floor retraining • Neuromuscular stimulation and biofeedback • Prolapse treatment • Advice and reassurance The NEW MUM MOT assessment is normally recommended 6 weeks to a year after birth, however it’s never too late to make positive changes if you have suffered problems since giving birth, even if your child is now a teenager!

We talked to Claire Magee, MD of Nannycare, to find out more about their goat milk-based Follow on formula for babies. What is the ethos of the Nannycare brand? Our philosophy is to choose pure, whole goat milk which we believe is an excellent protein base in Follow on formula, retaining as far as possible the natural goodness and qualities in our goat milk, supplementing only as needed to meet regulatory requirements. Nannycare is simply made, minimising unnecessary ingredients which may put a burden on the infant’s metabolism. Our successful track record, combined with care and passion for our products, stretches back over 27 years in the UK. Is goat milk-based Follow on formula safe and approved? Following an extensive clinical trial with the Nannycare formulation and submissions to the European Food Safety Authority, we are proud to say that, since March 2014, goat milk formula is recognised under EU and UK legislation as a nutritionally equivalent alternative to cow’s milkbased formula**. This means that Nannycare Follow on can be used in the same way as its cow’s milk equivalent, is just as safe and suitable for your baby and has a mild and creamy taste that babies love. What’s the difference between cow’s milk and goat milk-based Follow on formulas? Nutritionally both formulas are equal, and parents can choose between either milk if they wish to move on from, or complement, breast feeding. In cases of a baby not settling on cow’s milk formula with minor feeding issues such as crying, colic or reflux, it may be worth trying a goat milk-based Follow on as an alternative, although you should always consult with your healthcare professional before switching. It is also important to note that a goat milk-based formula should not be given to infants with cow’s milk protein allergy, unless directed by a healthcare professional.

Where can I buy Nannycare Follow on formula? Nannycare is now available in many branches of Boots and major supermarkets. We have a freephone Careline to help with any questions or to find a stockist in your area. Careline UK: 0800 328 5826 ROI: 1800 937 375 E: enquiry@nannycare.co.uk www.nannycare.co.uk Important notice: Breastfeeding is best for babies and provides many benefits for you and your baby. It is important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet in preparation for and during breastfeeding. Combined breast and bottle feeding in the first weeks of life may reduce the supply of your own breastmilk. If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby’s health. **Directive 2006/141 (EC) and equivalent UK legislation

BEST UNISEX BABYWEAR BRANDS

Best fashion buys for little ones. Katie Wright

T

here’s a growing trend for parents wanting to avoid imposing anything typically masculine or feminine on their babies, particularly clothing. “With more and more people not wishing to follow the old-fashioned gender stereotypes of boys on blue and girls in pink, an increasing number of gender neutral brands have launched, along with more traditional brands adopting unisex styles and designs for children,” says Jenny Slungaard of childrenswear retailer AlexandAlexa.

to-be yourself or looking for a fashionable gift for a tiny tot, here are five of the best babywear brands...

Why the change? “Parents are becoming more aware of studies that have shown how a young child’s mind can be affected through gender stereotyping,” she says. “The concept of allowing children to focus on their individual characteristics rather than an informed gender stereotype is a decision that has been adopted in countries around the world, with great success.” “In the past, gender neutral or unisex styles have often been bland or insipid or the traditional yellow for an unknown gender,” Slungaard says. “But with the growth of so many small independent labels and design-led brands offering an unlimited choice, from soft pastels, chic greys and beiges to vibrant designs and all kinds of prints, gender neutral clothing is anything but boring.”
