Wonder Photo: Tigerlilly Quinn

F

or over a decade, Cosatto have dreamt of making something truly unique. Something conjuring up that childhood idea of a proper pram that lives in the imagination. Now the dream is reality. It’s called Wonder and it looks set to change things. It has been the journey of a decade for the brand who are pioneers of Great British design. Ten years of master craftsmanship and passion has gone into creating this once in a lifetime, pride and joy pram.

Crafted

“Over the past decade we’ve been dreaming of creating something very different.” Mark Swift, Product Development & Technical Director, Cosatto. The Wonder project has been about exquisite detailing. Three completely different designs - Hepburn, Kew and Bonbon have leapt from paper into production. From the handstitched leatherette handles to the enamel wheel trims, every inch of the product has been obsessed over. Wonder is limited edition. It’s that covetable fashion piece for styleloving parents. Cosatto know that style doesn’t stop once the baby arrives. Each of the three Wonder designs have been created with a unique coutureled bag. This is exclusivity. This is the finishing touch to their labour of love. 8 A P R I L / M AY 2 0 1 6

Nostalgic

“Wonder’s that storybook pram we were all promised, that we couldn’t find when we grew into parents ourselves.” Vicky Morley, Creative Director, Cosatto. Responding to consumer demand for a vintagemodern pram in a polarised market, Cosatto stepped in with this luxury icon destined to become the family heirloom. With beautiful fabrics, unique finishes and careful attention to detail, each pram is individually numbered and delivered with a certificate of authenticity. This is pure luxury evoking a bygone age. Wonder’s that proper pram from another era with up-to-the-minute technology.

Iconic

“The consumer remained the focus throughout the design process, we wanted to create three different designs with bags of personality yet remain iconic and in keeping with the proper pram feel.” Steven Shaw, Designer, Cosatto. Available in 3 highly individual designs, each Wonder has been treated as a separate product range to appeal to specific consumer types. The Cosatto design team immersed themselves in the world of classic films,

evocative places and movie icons. These influences are woven throughout the collection. Hepburn design uses the exact shade of yellow from Audrey Hepburn’s dress in Charade. Kew’s duck egg blue has been inspired by the original classic Mini car. Wonder is the iconic pram that has been inspired by icons. This lovingly-crafted pram has wonder in every detail. Cosatto believe in reclaiming that sense of wonder. It shows. Go celebrate your dot in timeless style. Make wonderful memories with the proper pram inspired by a dream. Childless BUT NOT BY CHOICE Having a baby for many is a fundamental part of life, yet one in every seven couples in the UK struggle to conceive.

IVF is not the only treatment for infertility, there are many treatments depending on the cause, and the cause should be established first. You need to ask the right questions and to understand that if you have got a condition that would prevent IVF working, for example, you have to get that treated first. Make sure you have the most accurate information and that you see experienced and specialised doctors who will listen to your concerns, and advise you on the most effective treatments available, to give you the best possible chance of conceiving.

F

ailure to conceive is caused by a female problem in just over a third of cases. The most common cause of female infertility is failure to ovulate (around 30%), damage to the fallopian tubes causes around 25% of female infertility cases, while endometriosis is found in about 20% of infertile women. In another third of infertility cases, the problem is that the man is sub-fertile and may have a low sperm count. In addition, a substantial number of couples have what is referred to as ‘unexplained infertility’ - although more detailed testing sometimes reveals a possible cause. Many couples have two, or occasionally more, infertility causes. Make sure you are properly tested to identify the cause of your infertility and the best treatment. Only after investigations - ranging from testing women for ovulation, other hormone levels and chromosomal abnormalities, plus using imaging techniques and assessing the number and quality of the man’s sperm, hormones and chromosomes should treatment options be considered. IVF is appropriate when fallopian tubes are so badly damaged that tubal surgery has failed or can’t be done, if a women isn’t ovulating and ovulationstimulating drugs have repeatedly failed, or if a man has an abnormal or low sperm count, but the sperm are still potentially capable of fertilising

an egg. It may also be useful in some cases of endometriosis and unexplained infertility, where there are problems with the cervix, where couples have multiple fertility problems, and when there’s a high risk of couples having genetically abnormal babies so preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) is needed.

Financial Support For you & yours

when you need it most

B

orn out of the personal experiences of the founders, EmbryoCare Future Family insurance has been created to provide financial support for parents coping with the many implications of their child being diagnosed with a condition such as Congenital Heart Disease or Cleft Palate. “Child defects are an emotive area, but that shouldn’t mean they are ignored,” says Craig Rochford, EmbryoCare’s co-founder and father to a little girl with Cerebral Palsy. “This product came about as a result of personal experience and the commitment that comes from that. We know there is a need to help parents plug this financial gap and we want to help.” “No one wants to imagine that this could happen to them, particularly once they have had a healthy 20-week scan, but it’s a real possibility,” continues Dr Fysh, Chief Medical Officer at EmbryoCare, and Consultant Paediatrician at London’s Great Portland Street Hospital. “1 in 46 babies are born with complications. Some cannot be detected until later such as Congenital Heart Disease (1 in 420) or Cerebral Palsy (1 in 400). And whilst we

2 0 A P R I L / M AY 2 0 1 6

can’t help with the emotional shock of such news, we can at least ease the financial burden at a time when practical concerns are likely to seem a low priority.” Many of us think that the NHS, or our private healthcare, will take care of everything, but in reality this may not be the case. The NHS – which undoubtedly provides an essential service – cannot be expected to cover the weeks you need to take off work to attend follow up appointments or hospital stays with your child, or help you to adapt your home to accommodate a wheelchair-bound child; it won’t help you buy a different car or upgrade your care. Meanwhile, private health insurance will rarely fully cover congenital or developmental conditions. The financial impact can be significant for families. Despite the reassurance of the 12 and 20week scans (where a significant amount can be picked up), certain conditions are very difficult to diagnose antenatally; such as some heart problems, hip problems, and cleft palates without the lip being also cleft (it would require the baby to open their mouth during the scan to see this) and others are generally not predicted, such as Cerebral Palsy,

Cancer, Cystic Fibrosis, Epilepsy, or Cot Death. EmbryoCare Future Family insurance covers 14 of these conditions. “There is no need to dwell on the possibilities of these traumatic diagnoses, this insurance has not been created to instil fear, and we know there is no way to compensate or comfort a family dealing with a diagnosis like this, but we can forearm,” explains Jamie Moyes, CEO and co-founder. Becoming a parent means being the person people look to for answers and to cope with a huge range of situations. EmbryoCare policies have been created to empower parents; putting them in a position where they can take care of practicalities and make their own choices with some financial freedom. “The fact that you have a policy in place, providing a cushion to help you afford the very best circumstances for your child should a diagnosis of one of the covered conditions be made, means that you can focus on what’s important: you and your child. With hindsight, we know that many of those who have been through the experience of a post 20-week diagnosis would agree that the additional funds would be useful,” concludes Dr Fysh. www.embryocare.co.uk EmbryoCare Limited is an Approved Representative of Pulse Insurance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

The trendiest

baby names

of 2016 so far

N

ew data from online baby name database Nameberry has revealed the hottest choices for 2016 so far – and it seems the latest trend among parents is to ditch gender stereotypes when it comes to picking their child’s name. Unisex names like Riley and Rowan are proving popular with girls, while Logan and Charlie are fast becoming a top choice for boys. Having been a common name in Sweden for years, Astrid now tops the chart for girls, with a 101% rise in popularity online in the US. Meanwhile many parents are opting for the more traditional James for boys, which is up by 72%. Names beginning with a vowel are continuing to top the table, with 40 per cent of the 50 most popular girls’ names and over half the boys’ names starting with A (still the leader), E, I, or O in that order.

The website published its findings from looking at which names attracted the most unique views out of the six million visits they received to their ‘name’ pages over the past month. Nameberry staff then tracked which of the top names had increased by 50 per cent or more compared to the same period last year. Though many of the names are yet to appear on international popularity lists, their experts reckon the current spike in interest is “sure to translate to much wider adoption in the months and years ahead”. Last summer the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported the most popular girls name in Britain was Amelia (having held the top spot for two years) while Oliver ranked first for lads.

A Princess In Residence Girl’s bedrooms are certainly not relegated to frilly beds and all-over pink decors any longer. Today’s girls bedrooms are as varied as each girl’s personality with styles, colours and motifs in an endless range of possibilities

rom baby girl nurseries to young girlie bedrooms to pre-teen girls rooms, you’ll find design ideas for every stage of your daughter’s childhood. Decorating a room that grows with your child calls for creativity and clever planning. Keep life simple by leaving walls and furniture bright and white. The neutral backdrop will blend effortlessly with any number of solids and patterns on bedding and other decor.

While pretty is important, practicality is a must. Bedding, accessories, and paint colours can easily be changed as tastes go from little girl to teen. The many storage options can readily go from holding dolls to fashion magazines and makeup. Keep her stylish space organised by adding simple wall shelves. Narrow shelves in various sizes create visual interest in a bedroom and offer a simple way to showcase books, artwork and other knick-knacks.

Bedrooms aren’t just for sleeping anymore. A hanging bubble chair provides a unique place to read and study, as well as the “girls only” ladderaccessible secret hideout. An organised and clutter-free bedroom doesn’t have to consist of clear storage containers and rows of school-style cubbies. A tall and simple bookshelf consisting of both drawers and shelves can showcase her favourite toys and collectibles, while keeping small trinkets safely stored.

BOY Wonders

O

Whether you’re looking to create your perfect son’s nursery, design a vibrant play zone for your toddler, or overhaul your teen’s den, you need to start with a plan.

nce your little boy grows out of his crib, you can use a toddler bed or have him graduate right to a larg bed. Storage beds, bunk beds, and trundle beds are a few styles to consider. Be sure to include multipurpose kids’ furniture and storage space. In addition to storing his clothes, you’ll need to store his toys and books. A bookcase will work, especially if the upper shelves are used just for decor and the lower shelves are used for the toys he can get himself. You may also want to consider a toy box or a shelving unit with storage bins that make cleaning up after playtime much easier.

3 4 A P R I L / M AY 2 0 1 6

Young children like a craft table or a desk to do colouring, whereas an older child needs a place to do homework - this can be created within one space that won’t require too much work as your child gets older. After you have the furniture, you can select your design theme, which can be as simple as a colour scheme – blue isn’t always the colour these days so make sure to consider your son’s interests. Even very young children will have a favourite colour. Traditional colour palettes such as blues and reds are the classic option, but don’t be afraid of zingy yellows or calming pastel shades if you want something a little different.

Walls with fun print wallpaper is a great way to liven up a colour scheme. If your son is sporting mad, you can renew the age-old football theme with the addition of vintage football tables and cool posters or perhaps a striking, excuse the pun.. feature wall. 1. Shop for accessories that you can update as your son grows - one of the easiest ways to establish a theme of the room is with kids’ bedding, and this can be updated regularly. 2.Lighting for kids can be less serious than the fixtures in the rest of your house. A ceiling light fixture can be a fun place to repeat the theme, and a table lamp adds light for doing homework.

Utterly charming, Baby Dior dresses babies and children in an endearing style from head to toe. Dior has retained all its historical expertise in the same Workshops for forty years. Dior little girls can enjoy a sophisticated wardrobe with Couture touches. As for boys, the fitted outfits are cleverly inspired by menswear. Each season provides the opportunity to delve into Monsieur Dior’s archives, which are an endless source of inspiration. The collections blend Dior’s timeless heritage with the romantic charm of childhood. Combining delicate opulence with a slightly cheeky look, Baby Dior unveils all the riches of the Dior colour palette through its collections that are always in line with current trends. The Spring/Summer 2016 collection from Baby Dior sweeps us away to a place of splendour and

sophistication, a site particularly dear to Christian Dior that, to this day, enjoys close ties with the House: the Palace of Versailles. First, a stroll through the gardens. As springtime comes into bloom, the flower beds designed by Le Nôtre inspire a wardrobe of prints and patterns. On a peplum top, an optical-illusion print captures the shapes of the hedges, while other pieces, prettified with laser cut-outs, display new impressions of volume. In boys’ fashions, bands of bright colour and black create striking details on sweatshirts, polos and jackets in the same bold spirit. Our outing continues in the Hall of Mirrors. The interplay of reflected light in this masterpiece of French luxury is reinterpreted in materials of rich shimmer and sheen. For her, a technical Jacquard dress with a metallic look or bedecked with Lurex® patterns; for him, a structured cardigan with a silvery band and mirrorprint shirt. Lastly, the sumptuous elegance of women’s 18th-century fashion is reinvented and expressed in

modern and floral dresses, jackets and tops, where raspberry silk ripples beside technical fabrics, where special-occasion dresses, bedecked in prints or embroidery, are worn under a plastic coat. For summer, the Baby Dior wardrobe explores a more intimate Versailles, that of Marie Antoinette and the Petit Trianon, her private domain. A chance to discover the romantic, pastoral world of the young queen in jewel-coloured chiffon dresses, while other pieces echo the Japanese blossom pattern embellishing her apartments.

Child-Friendly Search Engine

‘Kiddle’

A

Launched

child-friendly search engine which bears a remarkable resemblance to Google has been launched. Kiddle features a logo similar to that of the search giant, but it is not affiliated with it. Instead it uses a Google Custom Search bar, which is embedded in the site, to filter out adult content. It blocks a number of explicit search terms, plus certain celebrities which could lead to adult content being displayed - such as Pamela Anderson. The site says: “Sites appearing in Kiddle search results satisfy family friendly requirements, as we filter sites with explicit or deceptive content.” But some celebrities currently slip through the net including some of the Kardashian clan, as well as Vanessa Hudgens’ racy photoshoots. A search for a rabbit brings up a news story about a rabbit being killed by a Danish radio host. The search results are ranked as follows: • The first three results include safe sites and pages that are written specifically for kids, • The next four results feature sites that include content written in simple language. • The results appearing after that are written with adults in mind but still are filtered by Google Safe Search. Kiddle’s logo uses the same colours as Google, but replaces the traditional white background with an outer space theme, complete with a friendly robot.

“I had a very happy childhood, but I wasn’t that happy a child. I liked being alone and creating characters and voices. I think that’s when your creativity is developed, when you’re young. I liked the world of the imagination because it was an easy place to go to”. – David Walliams

D

id you know that he’s the biggest selling children’s author to have started writing since the year 2000? Not only that, you can also read his books in over fortysix languages, and he’s sold over eight million copies worldwide! That’s a whole lot of kids laughing their pants off around the world. But there’s even more! You can watch Mr Stink, Gangsta Granny and The Boy in the Dress on DVD. And have you listened to all of the books on audio too? Hilariously read by David Walliams himself! And not forgetting that Ratburger, Demon Dentist and Awful Auntie have all won the National Book Awards Children’s Book of the Year. Since beginning his publishing career in 2008, David Walliams has taken the children’s literary world by storm. David is currently the fastest growing children’s author in the UK. Walliams’ books have achieved unprecedented critical acclaim and it comes as no surprise that countless broadsheet reviewers have compared him to his alltime hero, Roald Dahl. David is well known for his work with Matt Lucas. Together they created Little Britain, which has won numerous international awards including three BAFTAs and is now shown in over 100 countries. David and Matt followed Little Britain with the hugely popular spoof airport documentary series Come Fly With Me.

David has also proven himself as a dramatic actor, with acclaimed roles in Stephen Poliakoff ’s Capturing Mary for BBC2, as Frankie Howerd in the biopic Rather You Than Me for BBC4, and on the West End stage in Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land starring alongside Sir Michael Gambon and in Michael Grandage’s version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Noël Coward Theatre in 2013. In September 2011 David swam 140 miles from Gloucestershire to Westminster raising £2.5 million for Sports Relief. David has also proved popular in his role as a judge on TV talent show Britain’s Got Talent, where he found inspiration for one of the characters in his bestselling novel RATBURGER.

Birthday Parties

TO BOAST ABOUT What is the correct way to celebrate a five-year-old’s birthday? The local church hall, a Frozen theme, paper plates and fairy cakes? That is one way we guess, but when it comes to here in London? …We do it differently.

S

ome say that the children’s birthday party has got way out of control, that too much cash is being spent on spoilt offsprings, and that competition amongst parents has reached an all-time high. But no parent one wants their child to become famous for throwing the worst parties in the class do they? And so, save-the-date invitations are sent

out at the beginning of term in September - to prevent any clashes of bashes. Five-star hotels are certainly a feature when it comes to holding the ultimate Birthday bash for your little one - there are children’s parties in the ballrooms of the Dorchester, Connaught and May Fair hotels, with DJs and dancefloors. Party planners, including Kasimira, Quintessentially Events and Les Enfants, have found themselves working with budgets for under-10s of up to £150,000. Bespoke hits the top spot – a weekend spa break for little girls, or a Bond party with a helicopter ride for the boys sound extravagant enough….but there is always a mother that has to go one bigger - one American mother organised a weekend with a TV production company, during which the 10-year-olds wrote, filmed and starred in their own mini feature films.

Bespoke hits the top spot – a weekend spa break for little girls, or a Bond party with a helicopter ride for the boys The acceptable minimum for a party gift hovers at around £40, but can easily go up to £100 for the mother of a reception child keen to ensure continuing invitations - ‘I just wanted to make sure she made friends.’ Of course, there are still plenty of parents who organise a meal out (albeit VIP) or the cinema simply because that’s what their child would most like - though they just have to hire out the whole of the Electric in Notting Hill.

Guide To Etiquette For Children

F

or once the despairing pundits, pollsters and commentators are in agreement: children’s manners are getting worse. Table manners are a thing of the past, respect for elders is out of the window, and so on. Yet many parents riposte that it is no longer a question of manners, it’s a question of natural behaviour. Their little darling may like to be louder than the town crier, may want to crawl round other people’s feet in a restaurant, may need to have their parent’s instant attention for their own important demands - but they’re just children, and who are we to say that these natural impulses should be cramped within our own narrow view of manners?

a go on the swing etc. Again, repetition is valuable. • Remind them of their ps and qs. This effectively means endlessly reiterations of “say please”, “say thank you”… • Teach your children not to interrupt when you’re speaking. Again, repeated reminders work best. • Teach your child to listen carefully. This might entail them getting rewards for sitting still and listening attentively. Listening well is an incredibly important social skill, which will prove invaluable when it comes to making conversations.

Why not try and find a compromise between old-school stiffness and laissez-faire carelessness? Follow these basic precepts: • Teach your child empathy from an early age. Keep reiterating remarks like “how would you feel if someone said that to you?”, and you’ll get your child into the habit of thinking about the impact their behaviour has on others. • Emphasise the importance of sharing. This doesn’t come naturally, so you have to actually tell children to offer sweets around, give other kids

Table Manners

6 6 A P R I L / M AY 2 0 1 6

Table manners are by no means natural. Eventually you will have to teach children to wield and knife and fork correctly, not slurp from a glass, and may even introduce them to the arcane mysteries of correct cutlery usage, tipping soup bowls way from you etc. Don’t get bogged down in these minutiae. Concentrate instead on the absolute essentials. And always bear in mind that if you get too uptight about manners, you will turn family mealtimes into an absolute purgatory that is dreaded by children

and adults alike. Repeated lectures about nagging remarks about shortcomings do not make for a convivial atmosphere. Absolutely Essential Table Manners • Wait until everyone has started before you do; if you are specifically invited to start immediately, it is acceptable to do so. • Always eat with your mouth closed. • Always use cutlery (fingers are for bread, fruit and barbecues) • Never reach across the table and help yourself to food; always ask for food to be passed to you (a please won’t go amiss). • Eat as much as you can, then put your knife and fork together on the plate to indicate you have finished. • Ask permission to leave the table, or wait until there is a general move to do so Debrett’s Cygnets, classes teaching dining etiquette for children from the age of 7. SPORTS GENERATION

Swimming Lessons Christian Kenny and Christopher Whitworth of Sports Generation are on a mission to get you and your children swimming, offering first class and highly experienced tuition.

S

ports Generation, the experienced London swimming teaching company, is now offering weekly swimming lessons at six venues to over 1400 children utilizing a team of 12 fully qualified and experienced swimming coaches. The aim is to offer shared private and small group lessons and to keep class sizes low so that children receive maximum benefit from each lesson and more attention from their teacher; consequently, the non-swimmer and beginner sessions have no more than four children per class. Lessons are available at Cedars Health Club on Richmond Hill, Roko Health Club in Chiswick, and at luxury private pools in Richmond, Bloomsbury, Esher and Wimbledon Village. The teachers who represent the company are all of the highest calibre and work daily alongside the directors. Not only do they have a passion

for swimming, but they also relish teaching children. All of them follow Sports Generation’s proven approach, enabling children to progress as strong, happy swimmers, whilst simultaneously ensuring that lessons are both safe and productive by running them in line with the National Teaching Plan. Christian and Chris, the founders of Sports Generation, believe that swimming is one of the most important life skills and that parents must look to acquire it for their children as soon as possible. They strongly feel that it is vital to develop confidence and prevent bad habits forming early

on; accordingly, classes are available for children as young as three months old. Swimming has multiple benefits. It boosts the health and fitness of the participant, enhances the immune system and improves quality of sleep. It is also fun and sociable. And then there is the greatest benefit of all - it saves lives! According to the 2010 UK statistics, drowning is the third most common accidental death in the country. This is why it is the mission of Sports Generation to turn its pupils into strong and confident swimmers with excellent technique at the earliest possible age. However, it is never too late to start. At Roko Health Club in Chiswick, Sports Generation also teaches big kids - otherwise known as adults! The great enduring myth is that new skills cannot be learnt in later life. In fact, all it takes to learn to swim, or to acquire a new stroke, is quality instruction, commitment and practice. Sports Generation teachers can help you to realise your potential through fun and engaging sessions, regardless of whether you are a beginner, a more experienced swimmer or a triathlete. In addition to term time weekly lessons, intensive week long courses are available every school holiday for children of all levels. These focussed daily sessions are an invaluable way to improve confidence, stamina and technical ability, augmenting term time lessons. The

Guide to

SUMMER CAMPS A

s the summer holidays draw near, you may be considering enrolling your children in a summer camp. Being a relatively recent phenomena in the UK, it is a fantastic opportunity for letting your child run free in a safe and monitored environment, allowing them to feed their interests, develop their talents, build their confidence, learn social skills and get plenty of exercise!

There are Summer Camps in the UK if you would feel safer having your child within reach, but there are many others in Europe as well as the US, if you want to encourage them to broaden their horizons.

Selecting a summer camp can be almost as challenging as choosing a school: Does distance matter? What are the camp’s philosophies? Does it offer activities my child will enjoy?

Packing your precious child off into the unknown can be hard. Help your child by taking a positive approach. You can’t run and get them as soon as there’s a problem; it can require a little tough love. Parenting is about giving children roots and the ability to fly – and camp provides both. It helps them gain independence in a stable environment. That noted, the decision to go to camp should always be the child’s, and while parents can encourage, they should never push. Remember that summer camps are designed with children of all types in mind. Most partner them with a grown-up who will make sure they brush their teeth, tuck them into bed every night and give them a hug if they’re homesick. If you want to speak to your child while they’re away, check camp policy. Most frown on mobiles, so you’re unlikely to be texting during the day. Calls may be restricted to certain times, but letters are generally encouraged.

With so many outdoor activities on offer, it is important that you look for providers that are licensed by the Adventure Activity Licensing Authority (bit.ly/camp safety), monitored by Ofsted (ofsted.gov.uk) or accredited by BAPA. Most providers have comprehensive websites with information on staff training, campersto-staff ratios (which should be about 10 to 1 for children aged eight to 14), and staff CRB checks. If you can’t find this information online, telephone to check.

It’s important to do your research. Involve your child in the selection process (though not necessarily the shortlisting), to ensure they’re interested in the programme and feel comfortable.

Search for a camp that has been successful for a very long time, with a track record that speaks for itself. Experienced camps know how to get it just right so that kids can’t wait to come back and visit again.

Make sure you consider the unexpected, too. Ask whether staff have first-aid qualifications, if the camp is in contact with local doctors and hospitals, and what insurance policies are in place. Your child may need additional cover.

It’s got to be FUN FUN FUN for your children and worry free for you! A P R I L / M AY 2 0 1 6 7 5

Is co-education

better than single sex? By Dr Gary Savage, Headmaster, Alleyn’s School, London in a co-ed context, girls and boys learn from one another, and develop their own, individual learning style. All good schools know that learning is a highly individual thing, shaped by a range of factors that might include gender but also includes family background, personal aspiration, friendship groups, and of course great teaching. That is one of the many reasons why I introduced the ‘Learning about Learning’ course at Alleyn’s, to enable every one of our boys and girls to discover more about themselves as individual learners, so that they were equipped to get the most out of their daily experience at school.

P

Does this mean that co-education is ‘better’ than the alternatives?

rospective parents often ask me why I think co-education is ‘better’ than singleWhat it means, I think, is that it is undoubtedly sex, assuming of course that because I better for some children; and our job, working with lead a co-educational school, Alleyn’s Senior and Junior School pupils I must think educating boys and girls enjoy a bilingual meet-up together is superior. I always gently point out that things aren’t quite as simple as that. Having been educated in a co-ed comprehensive myself, and a co-ed university for that matter, I certainly feel an affinity for, and a belief in, co-educational environments, including schools. It is entirely natural for girls and boys to live and learn together, preparing them for all that comes later in a world which is very far from single-sexed, but multi-gendered, rich and complex. That world takes some navigating, and a co-ed school is a great place to start to learn how to manage all the ups and downs of real life.

‘All good schools know that learning is a highly individual thing...’

I have, moreover, never subscribed to the notion that girls and boys have gender-determined ways of learning. What ‘gendered’ learning (and for that matter living) styles they might have can only be amplified, it seems to me, in a single-sex environment; whereas, 7 8 A P R I L / M AY 2 0 1 6

prospective parents, is to identify those children and help them to flourish. Having been a teacher and governor at single-sex schools, I know that these can be a terrific fit for the right kind of boy or girl, who will therefore flourish there, too. At the end of the day, a good school is a good school, and we are blessed with lots of them right here in London. What I would say, of course, is that if you think that a co-educational environment is the right choice for your child, then you will not find a better school than Alleyn’s. On the contrary: in my view, it is simply the best!

Alleyn’s is one of the UK’s leading independent schools.

Based in Dulwich, London, the Senior School and Junior School collectively offer co-educational excellence in a caring community to pupils aged from 4 to 18 years. London parents see toxic air

as ‘the biggest health threat to their children’

M

others have revealed their fear over toxic air in London - with 7 out of 10 admitting they worry about its impact on their children. A YouGov poll found that parents in the capital now see air pollution as the biggest health threat. Experts now blame air pollution for a death toll of more than 9,000 a year in the capital. The survey, commissioned by environmental lawyers ClientEarth, shows 68% of London parents are worried about their children breathing in dirty air. Mothers have told of their concern that as they push buggies along the street, their young children are sitting at the same level as filthy fumes being spewed out by many diesel cars and other vehicles. Scientists have also warned that the lungs of some children are being damaged by air pollution — which in the capital is in breach of EU rules. ClientEarth has won a Supreme Court battle forcing ministers to redraw plans to cut air pollution. Its chief executive, James Thornton, said it was “no surprise” that parents were so concerned given

This was followed by stress (29%), poor diet (23%) and not doing enough exercise (21%). Drug use came next, on 17%, then alcohol (16%), smoking (13%) and unprotected sex (4%). Wealthier people and those living in inner London were more likely to put air pollution at the top of their public health risks. Boris Johnson has taken a series of steps to tackle air pollution, including getting the dirtiest buses and taxis off the road and promising to implement an ultra-low emission zone by 2020. A City Hall spokeswoman added: “Air quality in London is improving but more needs to be done and this is why we need to see more of the bold

measures implemented by the Mayor.” A spokesman for the Department for Environment said: “Our plans clearly set out how we will improve the UK’s air quality through a new programme of clean air zones, which alongside national action and continued investment in clean technologies will create cleaner, healthier air for all.” YouGov polled 1,015 parents of children aged 18 and under between March 7 and 14.

Keep Your Kids

Safe Online

Children of all ages love using the computer, learning to navigate the internet from their earliest days through exposure at home and school. It is of paramount importance to put safety rules and measures into place before allowing your child independent access to the worldwide web.

A

ccording to Andrew Rogoyski, Vice President of Cyber Security Services at CGI UK, the main online dangers parents need to be aware of are people masquerading as children and forming inappropriate and hidden relationships with a child, as well as criminals acting to defraud, run scams, or clone an individual’s identity. He also warns of unscrupulous companies getting children to sign up to paid services and urges parents to explain to their kids about inadvertently exposing private and sensitive information to the public. Technology that suddenly goes on the fritz is also something to watch out for - if your computer starts to slow down, that can be a sign there is malware on the system, which can wreak all kinds of destruction, from erasing all of your files to capturing online banking details. “There are plenty of services and software that promise to keep your child safe online. None of them are substitutes for good parental supervision and knowledge,” Rogoyski says. Before allowing your child online, establish some ground rules: “When and how long they have ‘screentime,’ what 8 6 A P R I L / M AY 2 0 1 6

applications they can use, what you, as parents, expect to have access to and what punishments will be imposed if problems occur. Such rules can be difficult to impose on mobile phones so think about how your child is going to use mobiles.” It’s key for parents to understand how their children are using technology and social media. Stay safe by enforcing privacy settings on social media and making sure your child is only interacting with people they know. Rogoyski recommends that parents check websites like www.cyberstreetwise.com and www. getsafeonline.org to get tech-savvy and learn about installing security software and strong passwords to prevent hackers. They offer detailed information on topics from online gaming to preventing identity theft so parents can assess risks and take precautionary measures. It’s important to explain the risks of being online to children. Parents should educate children about filling in personal information (required for competitions, etc), responding to pop-ups, being aware about the photos and messages they post and the dangers of meeting strangers online.

Most social media websites (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) have a minimum age of 13, while WhatsApp requires users to be 16 and Vine has a minimum age requirement of 17. These minimum age requirements can be breached, which is why parents need to be vigilant in monitoring their children’s internet use. Minormonitor.com helps parents track their children’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, allowing them to stay ahead of any potential issues involving bullying, drugs and sexual references. Apps can also give parents power over their children’s digital lives. K9 Web Protection Browser is an internet filter and parental control software which blocks websites in over 70 categories and Net Nanny is another customisable filter that lets you block porn, profanity and other undesirable content. Mobicip is a popular choice to ensure your children are only exposed to age-appropriate content. Think of it like a Safari that bans restricted content and puts a time limit on internet usage. A fun way to teach kids about online dangers and safety precautions is with The Cynja, a book series about a cyberspace superhero fighting digital baddies.”Encourage positive use of these technologies,” says Rogoyski. “If you can get your child interested in areas like programming, digital art, game design, music production, film making and writing, to name but a few areas where technology excels, then the darker side of the internet will be much less of an issue.”
