Be part of your local magazine! W

hen you read fascinating stories concerning local people, local businesses, good causes and the countryside, towns and villages that you are part of, don’t you sometimes think that there are other topics that would look good in print? Are you perhaps a keen amateur photographer producing shots taken in the immediate area that would complement and enhance the articles in the magazine?

Well – Now’s your chance to see your name, or that of your organisation in print!

We have highlighted many of the exciting things going on in our area, and would very much like to encourage more of you to bring your message to a wider audience. So, whether you are a new business in St ALbans, a fund-raiser in Radlett, a charity organiser in Totteridge, a life-style coach in Harpenden or a successful community group in Hadley Wood, we would love to hear from you!

All you have to do is write an article (something between 1000-1250 words), with photos, and e-mail it to rory@ fishmediagroup.co.uk or call 07817 625 568. You’ll get the idea of the sort of thing we are looking for by browsing through this edition of the magazine. Don’t worry too much about perfect grammar or spelling – we will check it before it goes to print! So how about it? Why not get those creative juices going, sit down and start thinking of ways in which you could publicise the part of your Local Life that is most important to you? If you want to talk about what you have in mind, or would like some advice as to how to get the best from the topic you want aired, then please include a contact number so that we can help you. Remember, “Life Series” set of magazines publishes articles about stories of general local interest, so please don’t send us the account of great-aunt Maud’s birthday or your precious off-spring’s coming of age! We would also be delighted to receive photographs relating to the area, illustrating aspects of local life, commerce or nature. Again, please send your files to the above e-mail address – sorry but we are unable to accept printed media for inclusion in the magazine.

We look forward to hearing from you!

The result is a fast and exciting game that is extremely spectator friendly played in an intimate and exciting atmosphere where the crowd can see, hear - even smell all the action this highly physical sport provides. The O2 arena is the perfect place to showcase this great form of the game. Gaucho International Polo really will be a showcase of all the best things that polo has to offer, all at one of the world’s great venues. A Thursday evening has been chosen for the event making it the perfect

place for corporate hospitality, at The O2 arena Gaucho Grill and backstage bar, as well as providing a truly special evening out for people to go to after work. The range and quality of the entertainment also make this a great after-school event for families. The event will start at 2pm with corporate hospitality provided by Gaucho. The first match will be at 5pm - a top class exhibition match. Following that there will be an international game between Scotland and South Africa (6.15pm). A short but highly entertaining celebrity polo match then kicks off at 7.30pm. This all culminates with the Churchill Cup game between EFG’s England and their old adversary Camino Real’s Argentina. Prize giving is at 8.45pm. Between games there will be a host of great entertainment, including a celebrity polo-am match. Great thought has gone into making sure that every element of this tournament is world-class and we don’t even have to worry about the weather! Of course, no polo tournament is complete without a players’ after-party. For this tournament we will not need to go far. One of the exclusive 2500 capacity clubs within The O2 arena will be where the players can be found after the tournament as they host an after-party fitting of such a great tournament. Gaucho Polo Tournament and Ralph Lauren Ambassador Nacho Figueras comments: “Polo is growing so quickly now and the introduction of such a great tournament to the UK during the winter off-season is a welcome addition. He opened many creative doors and over the last few years I have kept those doors open through my own flower business Stormy where Jon and I have created unique designs for events in the UK and across the world to capture all manner of briefs. We are delighted to be heading up the return of Kenneth Turner Flowers by Stormy; the enthusiasm and passion for the brand and indeed for his floral vision never went away. We are already established in venues and ‘At Home with Kenneth Turner’ will take the brand into peoples living and dining rooms and beyond.” Whether it is a vase, bowl, basket, entire room or venue that requires creativity and energy for a party, event or special occasion- Kenneth Turner Flowers by Stormy has an arrangement to suit all. www.kennethturner.com 66/71 The Flower Market New Covent Garden, London SW8 5NJ. 020 7627 5640

xecutive chef Phil Thompson and his team have good reason to celebrate since retaining their position in the culinary bible. The Michelin Guide, widely regarded as the most respected source of ranking the world’s most exceptional restaurants, yesterday awarded him a Michelin star for 2011 at Auberge du Lac – the idyllic lakeside restaurant on the Brocket Hall estate - for the third consecutive year. Thompson, who transformed Hertfordshire’s flagship restaurant in Welwyn since taking over the reins from former Chef Patron Jean Christophe Novelli, adds the award - the most coveted honour for fine cuisine - to the string of accolades he has already garnered. Of the Michelin star, Thompson, who started his career in the Lanesborough Hotel, Hyde Park, said, “I am thrilled. Each year is just as hard, if not harder with the bar being raised by adventurous chefs all around the world. This third consecutive year is just as special to me as the first year and highlights the commitment from my team, both front and back of house. I look forward to building on our success.” Hearing news of the award, Ken Creighton,

Auberge du Lac is located in an 18th century former hunting lodge overlooking the Broadwater Lake and the illustrious stately home that is Brocket Hall. Known as the “foodie´s favourite” both restaurant and chef have received a steady flow of plaudits since Thompson took over as Executive Chef in 2005.

Recently described by the Good Food Guide as, “confidently sailing through the tricky waters of modern cuisine fashioning star-studded dishes that dovetail artisan British ingredients with contemporary French techniques and influences from the Orient,” Thompson seduces his guests with a heady cocktail of the finest gastronomy served in an aristocratic country retreat. That very mix once causing critic Michael Winner to comment, “The tart was totally superb. Close to historic.” A fitting tribute for a fine restaurant steeped in history. www.brocket-hall.co.uk

Gino D’Acampo’s recipe for

Cannelloni alla Margherita Cannelloni filled with sundried tomatoes, mozzarella and basil SERVES

6 to 8

INGREDIENTS 26 sheets of fresh lasagne 1 x 720ml bottle of passata sieved tomatoes 15 basil leaves 50g freshly grated parmesan cheese 2 mozzarella balls, drained and finely sliced (do not use buffalo mozzarella) For the filling 500g ricotta cheese 3 mozzarella balls, drained and cut into 1cm cubes (do not use buffalo mozzarella) 20g fresh basil leaves, chopped 200g sundried tomatoes in oil, drained ¼ teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg Salt and pepper to taste 2 8 f e b r u a ry 2 0 1 1

For the béchamel sauce 100g salted butter 100g plain flour 1lt full fat milk (cold) ¼ freshly grated nutmeg PREPARATION 1. Preheat the oven at 180º. 2. To make the béchamel sauce, melt the butter in a large saucepan on a medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute until becomes a light brown colour. Gradually whisk in the cold milk, reduce the heat and cook for 10 minutes whisking constantly. Once thickened, stir in the nutmeg. Season with salt and pepper and set aside to slightly cool. 3. Pour the passata in a large bowl with the basil leaves. Season with salt and pepper, mix all together and set aside.

4. To prepare the filling, place all the ingredients in a large bowl, except the mozzarella, season with salt and pepper and with the help of a fork, mix all together. Scatter over the cubed mozzarella, gently fold all together and leave in the fridge to rest. 5. Prepare a large saucepan with plenty of salted boiling water and start to cook the pasta sheets in batches of five. 6. Boil the pasta for 1 minute then remove and place in a large bowl with cold water, this will stop the pasta going soggy. After a minute in the cold water, remove the sheets of pasta and place onto a clean tea towel. 7. Place 1 and half tablespoon of filling onto each pasta sheet and start to roll up the pasta from the narrow side going forward. To seal the cannellone, overlap the pasta sheet for approx 2cm. Repeat the process until all the pasta sheets are filled. 8. Select a rectangular dish measuring 25 x 35cm and pour in a third of the béchamel sauce. Spread evenly. 9. Place half of the cannelloni onto the béchamel layer with the seam facing down. 10. Spoon over half of the passata and half of the remaining béchamel sauce. 11. Build up the second layer of cannelloni and spoon over the remaining passata. Spread over the remaining béchamel sauce. 12. Finish by sprinkling over the parmesan cheese and bake in the middle of the oven for 20 minutes. 13. Take the dish out of the oven, place the slices of mozzarella on top and continue to bake for a further 15 minutes until golden and crispy. 14. Once ready, leave it to rest for 5 minutes out of the oven. It will be easier to cut and serve as the layers hold together. The Wonderful Story of Butterfly World

This £27 million project was conceived by Clive Farrell, a butterfly fanatic and lepidopterist whose dream was to create a tribute to the butterfly and a dedicated centre of learning for the preservation of this fragile and beautiful species.

long with the support of our patrons (who include Sir David Attenborough, Professor Dr David Bellamy, Alan Titchmarsh, Emilia Fox and Baroness Helena Kennedy) the project was launched in March 2008 at an event at the Royal Society in London. Building work began in September 2008 and the image here shows the dome area under construction. Once completed in the Autumn 2011, it will be the biggest butterfly experience in the world and the Biome (100m in diameter x 17.5 m high) will be big enough to house the footprint of Stonehenge seven times over.

PHASE II - SPRING 2010 The education focus is launched next, to include the Butterfly Breeding House, the Insect Study Centre, the Chrysalis Lake, new gardens, picnic areas and the developing children’s play area. The Nectar House Cafe and new shop are opened too and the landscape is very much more developed.

PHASE I - SPRING 2009 The site was created in the shape of a butterfly’s head and the designer gardens competition, Future Gardens, was launched. The wildflower meadows were created and Ivan Hicks’ gardens were also opened, plus a cafe, shop and plant boutique. We celebrated the Very Hungry Caterpillar’s 40th birthday too.

PHASE IV - AUTUMN 2011 The final stage will be the completion of the massive Biome, the largest walk-through experience in the world, with rope walkways, Maya caves and ruins to explore, streams and tropical rainstorms. The project will incorporate a living rainforest, yards from the M25 and M1 and a tribute to our tropical and native butterflies.

3 2 f e b r u a ry 2 0 1 1

PHASE III - SPRING 2011 This phase will show further development of the site and construction of the first half of the massive rainforest Biome, 100 meters in diameter and home to over 10,000 tropical butterflies, hummingbirds, insects, spiders as well as tropical plants.

EXPLORE THE BIOME The 27 acre site is designed in the shape of a giant butterfly’s head, with the 100m Biome (to be completed in autumn 2011) as its geodesic eye. It represents an architecturally exciting, iconic landmark of the future. Giant maya ruins based on archaeological sites of Belize and Mexico will provide the backdrop to a kaleidoscope of up to 10,000 tropical butterflies and a variety of hummingbirds and many other creatures. The Biome will be an exhibition of living flora and fauna found within the rainforests of the world, including a lost civilisation, underworld caves with insects, spiders and scorpions, canopy walkways and intermittent thunderstorms - a lost world and a truly tropical adventure. The Biome will also provide one of the most extraordinary corporate events and hospitality venues in Europe, and will include a restaurant, cafe and retail areas. OUR BUTTERFLIES The tropical butterfly house will this year house over 600 tropical butterflies, to include the Blue Morpho, The Monarch, Swallowtail, Owl, Helliconius,

Clearwing and many more. As well as these spectacular butterflies we are focusing this year on educating visitors about the lifecycle of the butterfly, how extraordinary and fragile it is and how it can be so easily broken by a declining habitat. In the Butterfly Breeding House you can see the tiny eggs, pupae and caterpillars and watch the butterflies emerging from their pupae ready to spread their wings. From here they are transported to the Tropical Butterfly House to source nectar and breed. The butterflies are bred in the rainforests around the world in farms either owned or supported by The Stratford Upon Avon Butterfly Farm, which in turn is owned by the founder of Butterfly World, Clive Farrell. The butterflies come in chrysalis form (in their sleeping bags!) by air freight from all over the world, to include Belize, the Phillipines, Costa Rica, Kenya, Columbia, Northern Thailand and El Salvador. The Stratford Upon Avon Butterfly Farm is one of the biggest butterfly livestock businesses in the world, and supplies most of the live butterfly exhibitions in the UK, Europe, Canada and the USA, including the Natural History Museum. Clive Farrell’s butterfly farm in Belize, Fallen Stones, won a Shell Technology Worldaware Business Award in 1995 for his work on developing this project, where it is the mainstay of the local economy. The project prevents this area of the rainforest being used as a wood source or destroyed by cattle.

MALAcHITE BUTTERFLY

OUR GARDENS Ivan Hicks is the celebrated garden designer and chief landscape architect for the project and he has created an incredible attraction for anyone interested in gardening – or just those who want to be inspired - at Butterfly World. He has created an array of different gardens from ‘The Theatre of Insects’ to ‘Through the Flowerpot Garden’, in which you are transformed into ‘insect size’ and can walk through a giant flowerpot… but make sure the spider doesn’t catch you! Adored by children and grown-ups alike, come and see what he is creating for Phase II. WILDFLOWER MEADOWS With the conservation of our native species of butterfly in mind, Ivan Hicks has created a kaleidoscope of colour with his unique approach to wildflower planting. There are over 20 acres of wildflower meadows at Butterfly World, which last year were an incredible sight to behold and attracted an enormous amount of media attention. The international wildflower meadows provide a wonderful nectar transfusion for the butterflies and insects – their very own service station off the M25! It also brought tears to the eyes of the visiting public who could not remember seeing such a spectacle for years. FUTURE GARDENS As part of phase I of the project, Butterfly World RED ADMIRAL

last year hosted a designer gardens exhibition called Future Gardens. This involved inviting talented garden designers from around the world to contribute thought-provoking designs for individual gardens which fit into the segments of a caterpillar. Each of the 12 gardens makes a design statement with no shortage of inspiration for visitors to take home and try for themselves. These gardens look fabulous in their second year of development and continue to offer fun for the children and great ideas for garden lovers. CHILDREN’S PARTIES Our futuristic Solardome, Nectar House Cafe and Insect Study Centre provide wonderful spaces for children’s parties as well as the 27 acres of Butterfly World Phase II to run around in. We can organize the whole package for you – entertainers, activity walks, craft sessions, face-painting, party lunch or tea, butterfly cakes and party bags - for up to 30 children. We hope to provide an educational, unusual and fun venue, near St Albans, which your children will never forget. You can simply book ahead and reserve a table for a minimum of 10 children.Organised parties are available for a two hour period subject to availability: Lunchtime from 11.00am – 1.00pm or Teatime from 3.00pm – 5.00pm Email info@butterflyworldproject.com PUPAE

IS YOUR CHILD A BUDDING MATHEMATICIAN?

Enrichment versus Acceleration BY NICK HAMSHAW Head of Mathematics, Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School It is 1983. George Lucas’ Return of the Jedi has completed the celebrated Star Wars Trilogy, Michael Jackson’s music video for Thriller has been unleashed on the general public and Manchester United win a replay of the FA Cup final against Brighton and Hove Albion. What better than a film event, and exciting sports result or another media release so visible to spark a common feeling of belonging to a particular era and actually being there when it happened. So what else was memorable in 1983? Well Ruth Lawrence aged 13 years joined University of Oxford, St Hughes College as one of the youngest ever Mathematics students, having topped their entrance examinations. Ruth would go on to earn a spectacular First after just two years and gain prestigious teaching positions at the Universities of Harvard, Michigan and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. I am a Mathematics teacher and have enjoyed working with pupils with a wide range of abilities. Latterly I have been fortunate enough to have significant numbers of pupils who find Mathematics to be broadly accessible, and even some who have excelled sufficiently to take the subject on to Oxbridge places. The principal joy of working with these pupils has not been the speed at which they have ploughed through syllabus material or delivered examination results of the highest order. No, the most fun has been had when the pupils have allowed themselves time to fully understand the Mathematics and explore the consequences of each result in a much broader context than the syllabus demands. Competitions such as the UK Mathematics Trusts’ Mathematical Challenges, or the Hans Woyda competition certainly give most pupils more than enough challenging material. As rewarding as syllabus material can be, acceleration through the experience can be at the expense of enrichment, and there is a danger that the joy of discovering things along with your peers and having the chance to discuss them afterwards is lost.

I regularly read books on Popular Mathematics, ranging from potted histories to those that require a little more ‘hands on’ work with algebra! If only we could persuade our more talented Mathematicians to look for the fun side of their deeply mysterious and mystifying subject then so much more could be achieved. So what is my message? Talent is one thing in Mathematics, but if it is not coupled with the opportunity to enjoy the results, to explore their consequences and to understand their place in the Mathematical Universe, then the talent is wasted. What is the point of merely being able to reproduce the great proofs of history unless you use them as a springboard to find something new of your own and to understand how this result fits into the Mathematical Big Picture? If your child is a budding Mathematician, you should encourage them to develop their talent by giving them enrichment puzzles and time to explore the Mathematical Universe, it could add up to a bright future in Mathematics.

PARTNERSHIPS words James Fowler, headmaster Aldenham School

at a time of coalition government when we have all been able to witness the need for parties to work closely together for the mutual benefit of the country and Parliament whilst setting aside their differences, it is indeed a salutary time for schools to examine their attitudes to partnerships. of course partnerships between schools are nothing new. For many generations there have been opportunities for schools to share facilities, or resources for the benefit of students. Yet as the competition for pupils has become intense, not least in the independent sector, there has perhaps been less inclination for schools to provide opportunities such as oxbridge interview preparation, or to share workshop or masterclass sessions with one of their rivals. Yet there is little doubt that the most significant factor to have brought partnership issues to the fore in the recent past was the insistence of the previous new Labour administration on addressing independent schools through the charity commissioners. at times it felt as if independent schools were extremely naughty school children who needed to be instructed on their responsibilities to foster closer friendships with schools in the maintained sector. the disappointment for those in the independent sector who felt the wrath of the invective aimed at them was due to the inappropriate nature of the attack in two regards. Firstly, there seemed to be little or no acknowledgement of the fact

that countless partnerships between maintained schools and independent schools had existed successfully for many years without the need for government intervention to make them happen. Where two Heads had seen a common interest being served by linking together it was an entirely natural and successful course for them to take. Many primary school children across the country had already been benefitting from the use of sport or science facilities at their local independent school on a relatively informal basis. the second way in which Heads on both sides were disappointed was by the sense of being pushed down a one way street. i vividly remember the relish with which andrew adonis told the HMc conference in 2007 that he would be looking for “the dna” of independent schools to be planted in new academies. He was clearly recognising that independent schools’ success with their pupils was something that he wanted to share, but probably did not have the political support to praise it openly, or indeed a recognition that it would take far more than glossy new buildings to embed such a sense in an academy. He also did not appear to have anything for the maintained sector to offer independent schools in return. Yet those of us who have worked in successful partnerships with maintained schools know that there is an enormous amount to be gained. in aldenham’s case we have worked with three local primary schools over the past few years, in each case giving their children the opportunity

to undertake a Saturday morning programme including sports, science and art. this has also given our sixth form students the chance to develop leadership skills in running the sessions. our ccF operates in an incredibly successful partnership with Queens’ School Bushey and as i write this article pupils from both schools are competing together in a national competition for cadets at RaF Halton. We also work at the level of staff development with a number of local maintained schools and many of our staff can testify to the benefit of sharing good practice with our colleagues in the maintained sector. those of us working in schools can already see the benefit of such programmes without the iron fist of a charity commission sitting over us. Yet it has been useful to be reminded over the last few years of our responsibilities as charities, not least in requiring us to read our objects. in examining aldenham’s objects we were made well aware of our responsibilities as part of a wider educational community in Hertfordshire, and therefore we have looked to a partnership with another charity as an ideal next step. this has led to us incorporating another smaller educational charity, the St Hilda’s educational trust, into the aldenham Foundation from the beginning of this year. in this way by taking responsibility for St Hilda’s School in Bushey we hope we will have the chance to create a mutually beneficial partnership with a school which has a similar ethos to ours and which we imagine many schools will want to examine in the years ahead.

true educational independence at Merchant Taylor School words Christopher Massi

Four hundred and fifty years ago at the height of the english Renaissance, a group of men belonging to a prominent Livery company undertook an act of great charity. inside the festering moat and city gates of London, they founded a school for street urchins. able but poor children would study alongside the sons of well to do merchants. as an act of philanthropy, it was unlike most others that came before. it was not a university to educate the elite nor was it a medieval almshouse. unlike the most ancient schools, such as Westminster, the donation was not by royal or episcopal direction, but by the burgeoning and prosperous middle class.

negotiated their way through the Reformation and counter-revolutionary forces, sometimes lending (and expelling) students for the cause. even simple educational decisions could be fraught with risk. the Haberdasher’s school debated the merits of Latin versus French instruction, a choice between a traditional education and a more commercial orientation. this was more than a choice about which book to purchase; it was a choice between a clerical religious past and an outward looking future.

Merchants, not noblemen, lit the fires and paid the masters and for the first time, schools became an agent for change.

at the same time, the first Head Master of Merchant taylors’ School, Richard Mulcaster, penned two books on education, the Positions and elementarie, which took the rather radical position that english, not Latin, was a perfectly good language for undertaking academic study and that exercise was an important component in the formation of a student. He also was among the first to champion the use of a referee during ‘footeball’, sincethe game in that era seemed to have been little more than two unruly mobs chasing a ball. in Richard Mulcaster, the academic but well-rounded student had found his – and indeed her – first champion, for Mulcaster was a prominent advocate for girls’ education, music and drama as well.

in today’s world, such a project would involve millions of pounds and quite a few committees and would probably run afoul of rival political interests. indeed, these Renaissance schools took quite a few political and educational risks. they

these and other city schools survived the Plague, the Great Fire, the Reformation and the Restoration, sometimes lagging behind change, but often as not leading change creating a new middle class and offering more avenues for

to be sure, this gift might be seen as somewhat self-interested. Street urchins are good for crime and bad for business, but London’s ancient guilds, the twelve Great Livery companies, could have left things as they were for poverty, disease and death to solve the problem as they always did. instead, the Livery companies built a revolution with books, not muskets.

economic mobility. But the 1800s offered new challenges – a more mobile population, train lines, industrial pollution and a Great War – so that by the 20th century, many city schools were in the process of moving to the shires. Some schools were secure in north London, urban, yet comfortably so. others moved all the way to open fields and fresh air. Schools began to teach english as a discrete course, not limited to teaching subjects in english. art and music gained footholds and what was 100 years earlier the study of natural Philosophy became Biology, chemistry and Physics. independent schools – being independent – to this day have less to fear from taking risks and leading the occasional academic revolution. they can and do blend the best of the past with the best for the future. independent schools offer far more opportunities to their students – boys and girls can still study traditional subjects like, Maths, Latin or Greek, French and Spanish and German, yet students can also venture further off the path with Mandarin and Japanese. they can listen to visiting lectures with internationally recognised guest speakers, take part in unrivalled work experience and career networking, pursue academic trips abroad, sing in musicals, and puzzle through the Biology olympiad. they can study in greater depth, choose among a broader range of courses, and pursue a wide number of extracurricular activities. independent schools have plenty of burnished oak and ancient traditions, but make no mistake, it is the ability to broaden the mind – it is the tradition of intellectual adventure – that sets these schools apart. So many of London’s independent schools grew out of enlightenment ideals, it should be no surprise to families that excellence and adventure abound. Risks and revolutions, the kind that broaden the mind and open the world to exploration and wonder, these are product of england’s great national heritage.

Direction In uncertain times Parents in this economic climate have some difficult decisions regarding the education of their children. The news is full of gloomy prospects for State schools, with ring-fenced money for sport removed and overall budget cuts demanded by a Government that is determined to drastically redress the deficit. However, when these cuts start to reduce front-line services there is one certainty; class sizes will increase and the opportunities for extra-curricular will further diminish. It is now, more than ever that parents should give thought to the alternatives. Independent education is not a cheap option, but at Westbrook Hay Prep School, we think we give full value. With class sizes on average half of those seen in State primary schools, the opportunity for individual attention and teaching means that every child can have the best start to their education. Coupled with fantastic facilities and specialist teaching, the advantages that a private education can bring are many and varied. With a commitment to providing a diverse

and exciting experience for children, the extensive opportunities for sport, music, drama and art means that going to school is not a ceaseless grind and it is little wonder than children learn with a smile on their faces. When to embark on this journey is very much a personal choice. Some parents will want to take advantage of a splendid Nursery to start their children’s education. Others will wait until Reception, when school becomes full-time (although beware the waiting list if you haven’t signed up early). For some it will come later, perhaps into Year 2 or 3 and for those that stay in the Primary school system it may be to explore the advantages that life in Year 7 can bring, if the State school allocation does not bring you what you want. Investing in your children’s future is one of the best things parents can do, so come and see what Westbrook Hay has to offer you and your children.

King Alfred School (KAS) was established in 1898 by local parents who wanted an alternative to what was on offer in the educational world. It has remained true to its founding principles and is a small, independent, co-educational, non denominational day school, embracing a wide range of abilities and years (4 – 18). KAS is an informal school – there is no school uniform and all are on first name basis - a

Built on the site of two old fives courts, it will contain a new staff room, library, all our learning support facilities, an IT suite, an art room, an auditorium and a multi-purpose room. These facilities will be shared across the whole of King Alfred School. The design of the building is in keeping with our policy of using sustainable materials and will be an extremely attractive addition to our school environment.

Beechwood Park School for the Best Possible Start If you are looking for the school to give your child the best possible start, then do visit Beechwood Park, the day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 4 - 13 years. Many join from the nearby Beechwood Montessori Nursery which takes children from 2½ years. The Montessori (at Little Cheverells) has recently been extended and refurbished. Amongst the older children, weekly boarding is increasingly popular; trial and flexi-boarding are available to enable pupils to experience its benefits. Beechwood offers a broad, balanced curriculum producing an excellent record of exam success and last year 17 scholarships were awarded to leavers who went on to a wide range of senior schools. “Just as important as impressive academic results, are the pupils’ many extra-curricular achievements and the enjoyment and benefit they derive from participating,” says Headmaster, Patrick Atkinson.

The school benefits from a uniquely beautiful and inspiring rural setting; sports facilities are superb; the variety of sports on offer means there is something for everyone. All children, not just the athletically gifted, have access to the best coaching and festivals of sport. The creative arts flourish too. About 50 children are currently rehearsing for a production of The BFG to be staged in March. Music provision is excellent; 300 individual instrumental and singing lessons take place each week. There are four choirs and the number of ensembles has recently increased to 17. A wide-ranging extra-curricular programme, visiting speakers, frequent trips and excursions all add to the culturally-rich environment for Beechwood’s pupils. Sebright Bursaries are available for entry in Year 7. The school, which

is well served by school buses from several locations, is situated just outside Markyate. The Headmaster is always eager to talk to parents personally to discuss how their child’s needs can be met at Beechwood Park. “Do please come and see for yourself. No words can adequately convey the experience of spending school-days in this idyllic setting.”

skills for Life the ability to think independently and to evaluate information critically are key learning skills that equip children for life beyond school. at St. Helen’s, girls are encouraged to take an active involvement in their learning and to question things both inside and outside the classroom.

active Learning Weeks are a regular feature of the curriculum, enabling girls to work individually, and as part of a team, to produce pieces of work that they can be really proud of by taking control of their learning and becoming part of the decisionmaking process.

Students are asked not just to complete tasks but to research, present, debate, guess and prove, with classroom learning punctuated by independent learning tasks that encourage students to explore new ideas, to think outside the box and to discover the joys of learning. By becoming actively involved, the girls develop the confidence to use their abilities, tackle difficult challenges, and to make mistakes which they can learn from. in the Sixth Form, girls can choose to study a Levels or the international Baccalaureate

(iB) diploma. the iB places emphasis on developing the skills needed for university and beyond, focusing on independent research, critical thinking and active involvement in the community. all students are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning through effective planning of their study time and a critical approach to their studies. through this continued emphasis on independent, active learning, upon leaving school, each girl is confident, self-reliant and independent, ready to take their place in the adult world.

Open Morning Wednesday 22nd June 2011 10.30am - 12.30pm Our staff and pupils are delighted to welcome all prospective Senior School (11+) pupils and parents. (Last school tours leave at 11.30am) By appointment only - please contact the Admissions Secretary

LEARNING YOUR A,B,C’S

Our definitive guide to help you make all the right choices for your children there are 2,500+ independent schools in the uK which are independent of local or central government control. independent schools offer a wealth of facilities and high teaching standards that enable students to achieve great results year after year. independent schools are in the unique position to provide a truly bespoke education for your child.

Free of the national curriculum, prep schools can differentiate their curricula according to what they think best prepares children for their later education. Most prep school children will be learning a foreign language from the very first year, and don’t be surprised to see subjects like Latin, Philosophy and Physics in the classroom, with cricket, rugby and tennis all on offer during games.

choosing the right school for your child is an important decision that takes plenty of time and research. there are a wide range of independent schools specialising in different age groups and needs.

as children reach the end of their time at prep school, most will look to the common entrance exam as their gateway into the senior schools. it is during this transition process that senior schools are also looking for talented pupils for scholarships and other awards, so the very able students may be asked to attend further examinations/recitals/ matches &c, depending on where their particular strengths lie.

PRe-PRePARAtORy SchOOlS (AgeS 2 yeARS - 7 yeARS) Pre-preparatory schools - also called nursery schools or kindergartens correspond to nursery and infants stages in local authority schools. in prepreparatory schools children are taught to read, write, develop numeracy and learn to play. Pre-prep schools are often attached to specific junior schools.Preprep school is the first time most children will experience education, as opposed to the daycare provided by kindergartons. children will have to learn the basics of mathematics, science and english, and a host of other subjects. outside the classroom, many of the children will be having their first proper experience with team sports, music and/ or choral tuition, and the arts. PRePARAtORy SchOOlS (AgeS 7 yeARS -11+ OR 13 yeARS) Preparatory or prep schools, have a full range of subjects leading to admission to senior schools at 11+ or through the 13+ common entrance examination.as their name implies, the preparatory schools are focused primarily on preparing boys and girls for their senior education, and the important public exams that come with it.

in the state system, children are tested by the Government Sats, however many schools in the independent sector will have their own internal methods of measuring the performance of the children. there are around 499 prep schools in the independent association of Prep Schools, one of our constituent Head’s associations, collectively educating over 134,000 children. SeniOR SchOOlS (AgeS 11 yeARS -18 yeARS) Most of the pupils in independent education are in senior school, educating over 350,000 senior school students in almost eight hundred schools. independent Senior Schools offer approaches to education, subjects, facilities and sports unparalleled in the state sector – students can study History of art, Government, Russian and Japanese, and try their hands at astronomy, ceramics or equestrianism. they could be on their school judo or sailing team, and take trips all over the world. Whatever your child’s particular strengths, passions and interests, there is almost certainly a school which can offer the chance to try all of them.

e d u c at i o n and illnesses ranging from those who need just a little extra help to those with a statement of special educational needs under the Education Act 1996 for whom a mainstream setting is appropriate. In all cases schools are concerned that children are helped to develop to the best of their ability and that they do not suffer academically because of their special needs.

Standards in the independent sector are high. There are very few senior schools which don’t require prospective students to sit an entrance exam (either the 11+ or, commonly, the schools own admission test), often accompanied by an interview with the Head or senior staff. If a child coming to the school from a different prep school, they will expect a report on his or her progress and attainment form the previous school. The transition from prep to senior school is a major step in itself. Pupils are generally given more rights and responsibilities than they had at prep school or junior school, and younger children may have to get used to older children with prefect responsibilities. There are also typically far more students in senior schools than prep schools, which will of course take a little getting used to. Exams taken at senior school have a much greater influence on the course of your life than they ever did before. At 16 pupils will take their GCSEs (or increasingly commonly their IGCSEs), before going on to take either A-levels, the International Baccalaureate or the Pre-U in the sixth form. Universities look at grades both predicted and achieved in deciding whether or not to offer places, and for the more popular or academically demanding courses, are increasingly looking at earlier qualifications too. Thankfully, academic standards in the independent sector are the highest in the country. Senior school should be an incredibly enjoyable time for pupils of all ages (and in all schools – state and independent), where children make friends for the rest of their lives, discover the sorts of things they really enjoy doing, and gain the skills, qualifications and they need to take them where

14 | february issue

they want to go, be that on to Higher Education or otherwise. These schools offer three years of general studies followed by two years for GCSE and two years for AS/A2 or the International Baccalaureate. Schools which admit pupils at 11+ sometimes have a lower school for children aged 11-13. There may be a special entrance examination to the upper school at 13. Sixth Form (Age 16 years +) The sixth form educates 17- and 18-year-olds, and is a crucially important time in education. Pupils will be taking important exams – many with a view to university courses - be they AS/A-levels, the International Baccalaureate, Pre-U or more vocational qualifications such as the GNVQ. At the same time pupils have the chance to take on more senior positions within the school itself, often becoming team or society captains, prefects, editing the school magazine, or even becoming head boy or girl. Many schools have committees made up of sixth-formers which meet regularly with the head teacher and other staff to get involved with school policy and running the sixth-form communal areas. Many sixth-formers are also involved in a “buddy system”, where those new to the senior school are paired up with someone who knows it well and is more experienced, offering their experience and wisdom in getting to grips with independent education. Special Educational Needs Your child may have a particular talent or a special educational need or both. Independent schools admit children with additional needs, disabilities

Additionally, some of the best specialist schools in the country for pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia and associated difficulties are ISC schools. However, at the moment there are very few ISC member “special schools” specialising in physical disabilities or autistic spectrum and related disorders. Independent specialist schools may accept pupils with or without a statement of SEN. Full lists of approved special schools including independent schools, in your area, should be available from your local authority. Additionally, if your child has special educational needs, you can to check what support schools in your area can offer and discuss your child’s requirements with the head of your preferred schools before making your decision. Boarding Schools Most children in the independent sector are day pupils. They often come from a wider geographical area than those at state day schools. Sometimes the children live 15 or 20 miles away. If day schooling would best suit your child, you need to make a list of schools within reasonable travelling distance from your home. Consider rail and bus links and if you like the look of a school, but it seems difficult to get to, check whether it runs its own bus service, as many do. If not, there may be other parents in your area with whom you could share the travel. But you may want to consider the benefits of a boarding school education; don’t dismiss it just because it is unfamiliar to you. You have a wider choice of schools and you avoid the trouble and expense of daily travel. Boarding schools will not suit every child, but it is fun and most children enjoy living away from home during term-time. Many children have a mixture of day and boarding experience - often in the same school. Don’t be put off by stereotypical images of boarding school favoured by the media or reminiscences of those who boarded many years ago. See modern boarding schools for yourself: you will soon understand why they are so popular with today’s boarders. Weekly or flexible boarding has become a popular option in recent years. Children go home each weekend and this often suits families where both parents have jobs. It might even be an improvement on the limited ‘quality time’ parents are able to provide during a busy working week. Most parents choose boarding schools within an

e d u c at i o n hour’s journey from their homes; if they are likely to be moved abroad or to another part of the country, they might choose boarding schools near relatives or close friends. To help you with choosing a boarding school for you child try putting together a list of the boarding schools which might be suitable. Your child could start as a day pupil but enjoy the flexibility of being able to convert to boarding later. Many day children, particularly in preparatory schools, take the opportunity to be occasional boarders for a few nights a year. Visiting the independent schools of your choice The most important way to find out about private schools is simply by visiting them. Most private schools have open days for prospective parents, but do ask to make an appointment to visit on a normal working day. Amongst the important things you should look out for are: The children How do they look and behave? How do they interact with one another, with their teachers, and with you, the visitor? Do you have a chance to speak to them yourself? The head How does the head deal with your questions? Does he or she show an interest in YOUR child? Pastoral care Do the arrangements for looking after your child’s health and welfare satisfy you? Discipline Is discipline stricter or more relaxed than you would expect? Don’t be afraid to ask any questions when you visit, the head will be happy to provide any information you need to help you make your choice. Questions you may want to ask could include: Special needs Does the school have facilities and suitably qualified and experienced staff to look after any special needs your child may have? Is there a programme for gifted and talented children or special provision for those with physical disabilities? Curriculum Is it broad and balanced? Will your child have an adequate range of

options? Are there specialist teachers? The staff How well qualified are they? Is there reasonable staff stability? Do the teachers stay long in post? Extra activities Does the school offer an exciting extra-curricular activities programme that will stimulate your child’s interest? If you are considering boarding school, you will want to know what activities the school provides for children in the evening and at weekends. Where next? If you are looking at a preparatory school and have a specific senior school in mind, ask where the majority of pupils go to for their senior education. Exam results Although academic success if important, don’t be tempted to go just for private schools which are high in the “league tables”. Exam performance reflects a private school’s academic policies and a high-flying private school might not suit your child’s needs. Once you have requested a prospectus, called the admissions department, attended the school’s open day and decided that the school is right for your child it is time to apply for a place.I t is always a good idea to check the school entry requirements for the proposed independent school. Many independent schools will require you to register your child. This does not secure a place; it merely indicates that you wish your child to be considered for a place. There is usually a registration fee to cover administration costs, which is non-refundable. After you have registered, the school will inform you of any interview and/or examination dates. You will only be given a formal offer of a place after your child has been successful in whatever selection process has taken place, whether it is selection on a first-come-first-served basis or a competitive selection. Accepting an offer of a place is legally binding; make sure that you read all the conditions that apply. In particular, you should be aware that to withdraw a pupil usually requires a full term’s notice in writing, and sometimes two.

The independent sector is successful because of the flexibility its independence affords it. This means that you can choose a school that matches your child, effectively giving your child a bespoke education. Use the reviews, school league tables and websites but remember that none of these can even come close to experiencing the school for yourself. There are around 2500 independent schools in England, but the educational provision of only half of them is inspected directly by Ofsted. These schools are known as the ‘nonassociation schools’. For Ofsted, the process of inspection of independent schools is similar to that for maintained schools: inspectors gather evidence through observation of teaching and learning, and analyse a range of other information to assess how well the school is performing. All schools will be inspected at least once in a six-year period, and they result in a published report. Ofsted also inspects the welfare of boarders in all independent schools under the Care Standards Act 2000 having regard to the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools or Residential Special Schools, as appropriate. This is an integral part of the inspection of the whole school. Please note, however, that Ofsted’s social care inspectors also inspect residential special schools annually. These inspections continue as before when not part of the whole school inspection. Education isn’t a one-size-fits-all affair and thankfully independent schools come in all shapes and sizes. The independent sector gives parents the opportunity to choose a school that is right for their child. Whether it is the breadth and flexibility of the curriculum that appeals or perhaps the extra curricular activities, you can be assured that your child will receive a well rounded education helping them to achieve their full potential.

Dump the junk teaching our children to eat unprocessed food is essential to a healthy and happy life

Enjoying good health now and in the future comes from good habits and food choices. Therefore, healthy eating for kids is essential. Children who are trained to eat healthy foods at an early age are more likely to choose healthy food for a lifetime.

children to have more control over their own health and to lead healthier, happier and more productive lives. They need to know about the effects that food has on their health, they need to know that they have the power to make wise choices and that they can contribute to the prevention of disease.

As parents we provide the role model for our children. Therefore, if we want our children to develop healthy eating habits we need to start with ourselves. If both parents enjoy eating nutritious foods, the chances are that their children will copy their good food habits.

Creating a nutritional home is the first step to ensure the wellbeing of children. Kids will eventually see that consistent daily food choices mean healthy bodies and a happy life. As children grow up they will develop an attitude of wellbeing.

Educating ourselves regarding good nutrition is a major part of good parenting. We can help

Children seem to be the target group for the promotion of junk foods. Processed foods, promoted to children via TV advertising, offer

free toys or use cartoon characters to ensure kids pester their parents to buy these foods and food companies continually use these tactics to promote sales of their products. These processed foods include baked foods, snacks, chocolate, burgers, pizzas, cookies and carbonated drinks. Processed foods contain high levels of saturated fat, refined flour, sugar and salt which contribute to an unhealthy diet and are detrimental to a child’s health. Modern foods are produced with artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals. Filling up on processed and overcooked foods that provide little nutritional benefits can lead to discomfort, depression

Fairley house school fairley house, described in the sunday times as ‘the Gold standard’. is london’s leading day school for children with specific learning difficulties. fairley house school was founded 28 years ago by daphne hamilton fairley, a speech and language therapist. at that time she was teaching dyslexics at home and she knew that what was needed was a school for dyslexic children. the school was officially opened by princess alexandra in 1982 with 20 pupils, and today that number has increased to 164. We offer an education almost unique in that educational psychologists, with speech, language and occupational therapists are integrated into the school curriculum. We enjoy a central london location with excellent facilities such as a science laboratory, art room and outdoor play space.

learning difficulties benefit form learning in a multisensory way. the negative side of dyslexia is so often emphasised but what of the strengths? We bring out pupils’ creativity and the wonderful visual sense that many dyslexics possess if properly nurtured. our exciting displays of art work and design technology projects are a feature of the school.

fairley house addresses the difficulties of children between 5 and 14 with dyslexia and dyspraxia. children’s learning styles have often not been catered for in their previous school, leading to failure and loss of confidence, but fairley house offers them a ‘level playing field’ where everyone has similar difficulties. children receive a rich, stimulating educational experience integrated with therapy and specialist teaching. teaching is multi-sensory and children learn science, spelling, Geography and history through interesting, hands-on activities. there is a staff: pupil ratio of 1: 3.5. the average stay is two to three years after which children return to mainstream schooling with a new ‘can do’ attitude. our teaching is different. children with specific

a full range of sport is available at fairley house school, including touch rugby, football, netball, hockey and cricket. We use battersea park as well as the queen mother’s sports hall and swimming pool. We play fixtures against other schools and our after school clubs include sailing and fencing. at fairley house our intention is to provide your son or daughter with an educational experience which rivals that of any mainstream independent school. We aim to develop children’s confidence and self-esteem, enabling their talent and enthusiasm to grow and shine. We emphasise the development of the whole child, helping him or her to gain confidence and self-esteem through an encouraging and nurturing ethos. the children have opportunities to develop sound academic and social skills and to become independent. at fairley house, everyone succeeds.

time! Just when you thought you had managed to escape the inevitable, you catch sight of a wrinkle or a furrow that you are sure wasn’t there before! You are probably as guilty as the rest of us and thought you were going to be 20 forever, but sadly that isn’t the case and occasionally we can all benefit from a little plumping, retouching and looking after. TV personalities have led the way with celebrities such as Gordan Ramsey, Simon Cowell and we are led to believe even Cheryl Cole, have probably sought solace through non-surgical procedures in order to preserve or improve their youthful image. So for us lesser mortals the pressure to look good has become key, which explains the upturn with both men and women seeking cosmetic improvement, as their desire to maintain their looks has clearly become an essential and one not to be sacrificed even for the recession! Botox and Dermal Fillers bring with them the added bonus of offering everyone a more affordable solution over cosmetic surgery; they require zero recovery time, with almost 6 4 f e b r u a ry 2 0 1 1

instantly visible results with the added bonus of complete discretion, as time off work and surgical scarring are not an issue. All you have to do is sit back and accept the compliments and enjoy the new found confidence that follows! With the help of a qualified practitioner, such as Dr Ravi Jain of the Riverbanks Clinic, you can regain a youthful appearance and say goodbye to those frown lines, crow’s feet, or that sad or tired look you seem to carry with you no matter what you do! Dr Jain has treated hundreds of patients and is a UK leader for achieving a natural but much improved appearance. He believes it is

important to understand thoroughly the patients’ needs and concerns so he can guide them and provide them with the best possible treatment. Dr Jain says “No two patients’ needs are the same, so the ‘one treatment suits all’ approach can lead to frozen expressions and worse still irreversible outcomes. It is important to fully understand the benefits of the products you are using if you are to get the best results for your clients and this is often through using a combination of Botox and Dermal Fillers as each addresses different issues. Safety should be your No. 1 priority and just because it’s the latest dermal filler it may not be the safest so you must have total confidence in your chosen practitioner. It is also important to remember to retain flexibility and control over your looks because your face changes as you age and permanent fillers can end up making you look worse in the long run. Besides, beauty trends come and go and you do not want to land yourself with a look that you may regret in years to come.” For further details visit www.riverbanksclinic.co.uk or call 0800 0325415

Turn back time...

You feel 25 on the inside but your face tells a different story.

A little plumping and retouching will magic those tell-tale lines and wrinkles away and you can be confident that at the award winning Riverbanks Clinic, we will always recommend the best treatment option for you, to create the most natural looking result. SKIN DEEP Skin conditions affect people of all ages - both men and women - and extreme skin problems can have a profound affect on various aspects of everyday life. In this article, I will examine the two main skin conditions that commonly affect both men and women. Although these conditions are treatable, they are not necessarily curable. However, there are some fantastic expert treatments and homecare protocols that will help you to successfully keep them at bay.

to treat the individual symptoms. To reduce redness, I usually recommend a gentle skincare routine using products from the Pevonia RS2 range which is specifically designed to treat Rosacea symptoms using green tea, liquorice and rose oil to calm, soothe, decongest and desensitise the skin. Once the skin is calmed and strengthened, broken capillaries can be reduced with advanced cosmetic procedures that cauterise them, minimising congestion and pustules.

ROSACEA Rosacea is a skin condition that is characterised by its red-faced, acne-like appearance. It is becoming more widespread and is thought to be affected by stress, diet and harsh cosmetic ingredients. It can also be hereditary or caused by environmental conditions such as extreme heat or cold.

Chemical-free, mineral make up, which contains Vitamin K, will not only strengthen broken capillaries with everyday use, but it can also be worn to camouflage the condition and reduce inflammation. Glo Minerals Anti Redness Powder is great for toning down redness and reduces inflammation almost immediately.

The symptoms of Rosacea include high colouring on the cheeks, broken capillaries, small white heads and pustules on the surface of the skin. GPs usually prescribe antibiotics to help relieve some of these symptoms, but they often reoccur when the antibiotics are stopped. In any case, antibiotics can only be prescribed for a limited period of time and do not offer a long term solution to the condition.

ACNE Acne is a very common skin condition that affects teenagers from 13 years right up to 20 years old. For most people, acne will have disappeared by their mid-20s but for some people, it can continue to affect the skin until much later on in life.

Acne is caused by inflammation of the sebaceous glands that can be found on the face, chest and sometimes the back. During puberty, the production of androgens increases in both boys and girls and can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. White heads and blackheads occur when the bacteria in the pores becomes inflamed. Severe cases of acne can be treated medically with antibiotics or Roaccutane, a strong Vitamin A based treatment only prescribed by a dermatologist. Mild cases can be treated at home with products containing Benzynoic Peroxide, or in a skin clinic where the skin expert will extract and clean out the pores ensuring no contamination occurs. Too many harsh products will simply dry out the skin and make the condition worse. A mild cleanser and oil-free moisturiser will soon help to improve the condition. Acne scarring can be treated with medical microdermabrasion to reduce blackheads. Severe scars, such as ‘ice pick’ scars, can be treated with Dermaroller - a skin needling treatment that stimulates collagen synthesis to plump up the scars permanently, making them harder to see. If you have teenagers with acne or would like advice on how to deal with the symptoms, we hold regular workshops and consultations. Please call 01923 839709 for more advice.

HEALTHCARE MATTERS

PROSTATE CANCER

words Idai Makaya

What we All Need to Know T

his month Idai Makaya speaks to Consultant Urologist James Adshead about prostate cancer and the things everyone needs to be aware of in order to lessen the potential impact of this condition on peoples’ lives. Prostate cancer is a disease of the prostate gland (an organ found only in men) which lies next to the base of the bladder in the pelvic area. It is diagnosed in approximately 36,000 men in the UK each year, making it the most common cancer affecting men. Like most other types of cancer it may spread to other organs of the body if left undiagnosed or untreated. The aim of this article is to help men (and the people close to them) to avoid the condition where possible, by providing any information

36,000 men in the UK each year, making it the most common cancer affecting men 7 0 f e b r u a ry 2 0 1 1

that will help minimise the risk of developing prostate cancer. I am also aiming to help men self-screen themselves so as to be in a position to detect the condition as early as possible if it does happen to affect them. As with all cancers, early detection is an important part of managing or treating prostate cancer. However, unlike some other cancers, in the UK we don’t have a screening programme for prostate cancer which puts the responsibility for screening squarely on the shoulders of the public – and the healthcare professionals they come into contact with from time to time for various reasons. To assist with meeting these aims I contacted Mr James Michael Adshead, a well known Hertfordshire Consultant Urological Surgeon based at the Spire Harpenden Private Hospital in Harpenden and at the Lister NHS Hospital in Stevenage. Mr Adshead qualified at Cambridge, trained further in London and Australia, and has gone on to become a nationally recognised specialist in the field of urology (a poll of surgeons carried out by a national newspaper in 2010

- based on the ratings given by other doctors regarding who they would like to be treated by if they prostate cancer - rated Mr Adshead as a candidate for a top-ten position). Mr Adshead is an expert in robotic prostate surgery, keyhole urological surgery, and laser treatment of kidney stones. Idai Makaya: Mr Adshead, please explain which men are at the greatest risk of developing prostate cancer. James Adshead: All men are at risk of prostate cancer but especially those with a family history of prostate or breast cancer. The disease appears to affect Afro-Caribbean men to a greater extent. These 2 groups need to be particularly aware that it is a potential health risk for them. Q. Is there anything one can do to reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer? If so, please state if you think there is any single action which will have the biggest impact on reducing this risk. A. Being overweight may be linked to an increased risk of aggressive or advanced prostate cancer. Therefore eating a healthy low fat, high vegetable and fruit intake in the

heaLth BeautY same way as we would be advised to prevent heart attacks is advisable. Some dietary intake has been shown to be protective such as tomatoes (lycopenes), pomegranate juice and polyphenols present in green tea and wait for the good news, …..red wine Q. What symptoms, if any, should people look out for when self-screening for prostate cancer? A. The problem is that many men think that the time to go to see the doctor is when ‘waterwork’ symptoms occur. Most of these symptoms are due to the non cancerous enlargement that happens to most men as they get passed 50. In actual fact ,if you look at the frequency of prostate cancer in 60 year old men presenting to their GP with flu or with ‘waterwork’ symptoms, rather surprisingly it is the same in both groups. This is why the only way to detect early cancer is by asking for a PSA blood test as well as having the ‘dreaded’ prostate examination. Q. Is there any way people can be screened for prostate cancer, considering there isn’t a national screening programme? A. Men in this country do not get asked to come for a blood test automatically which is a great shame in my opinion (in fact not even those men who we know have a higher risk of the disease). By raising awareness, however, those men interested in preventative measures can ask their GP to include a prostate cancer screening test in their ‘well man’ checks (mainly designed to look at heart disease risk). Q. How is prostate cancer diagnosed?

Q. What short term treatment options are there for managing and treating prostate cancer? A. Most prostate cancers will grow so slowly that a man may well die of something else 1st and so if we find a low risk cancer we will often just watch it and only treat if it changes to the faster growing type. This is called “Active Surveillance.” The problem is that unless you get tested you will not know which type you may have. Knowledge is everything and if you have faster growing prostate cancer there are many treatments to suit different men. The main choice is between surgery to remove the prostate and radiotherapy - either as implants in to the prostate, or traditional beam type treatment. My own expertise is in Robotic keyhole removal of the gland and I believe this allows me to see the important structures in much more accurate and 3D detail. This technology has allowed me to reduce surgical blood transfusions to zero so far and often to preserve the important nerves that control sexual and urinary continence functions. Many men get home the day after such surgery and are back to work in a few weeks. The future is exciting and there are many new drugs on the horizon which may slow prostate cancer long enough that it won’t kill anyone, anymore - but at the moment too many men are dying who could have been diagnosed earlier and probably cured. Q. I believe I once heard someone on a medical TV programme saying if men live long enough they will all eventually develop some sort of prostate pathology, even if it’s not life-limiting. Is this true? A. Yes, a rough estimate made from studies when people donated their bodies for research

Many men get home the day after such surgery and are back to work in a few weeks after death showed that prostate cancer cells are present in almost all men by the time they reach 90 and as we live longer detection may well become even more important. The greatest need is to find a test or genetic code to tell us which prostate cancers will kill in an individual man’s lifetime. For the moment we have to ‘over-treat’ men (by treating most cancers in the same way) but, in my opinion, if it prevents death from prostate cancer it’s the best option we have with the current science. Idai Makaya: Mr James Adshead will deliver a free prostate cancer information presentation at Spire Harpenden Hospital on 28th March 2011 at 7:30pm. There will also be the opportunity for a free PSA test at this event to men who would like to be screened, so if this issue is of concern to you (and you are a man aged 50-70) please contact Spire Harpenden Hospital for more information about the prostate cancer information event - or to book a free place - on 01582 714 420. Alternatively, visit www. spireharpenden.com and click on “Events.” The content of this article is provided for general information only and should not be treated as a substitute for the professional medical advice of your doctor or other health care professional. The views expressed are those of the columnist or guest contributors and do not represent any particular organisation or clinical body.

A. The diagnosis involves taking samples from the prostate to look at under a microscope and -yes you’ve guessed it - unfortunately it involves taking those samples as a biopsy via the back passage. However it is a relatively quick procedure, often done as an outpatient, with local anaesthetic application to the prostate making it numb before the biopsies are taken. This is only required in men who have an elevated blood test, or an irregularity felt when the prostate is examined. Q. What is a PSA test? A. The PSA test is a blood test that measures the level of PSA (prostate specific antigen) in your blood. PSA is made by the prostate gland and some of it will leak into your bloodstream (depending on your age and the health of your prostate). A raised PSA level may mean you have prostate cancer. However, other conditions which are not cancer (for example, enlargement of the prostate, prostatitis, urinary infection) can also cause higher PSA levels in the blood. f e b r u a ry 2 0 1 1 7 1

JOHN T

here is a small section on the home page of my website where I illustrate an image from a selection of enquiries people send to me. Tantalisingly I have a members’ page where for a modest fee of only £5 per month a full answer and valuation is given, among many other unique advantages. However, sometimes there is a question the answer to which is of wider and more general interest than those of a specific or narrower field. Such a one is the dumbwaiter illustrated and so I have decided to share it all with you. Firstly the owner wanted to know when did we first have dumb waiters? (Pieces of furniture that is, not incompetent staff.) Secondly how old is this particular example and finally does the carved decoration make it important? Well in that order, dumb waiters first appeared around the middle of the 18th century. The second generation of newly wealthy young people, to many of whom we owe our heritage of fine country houses and collections of foreign fine and decorative art, so don’t judge them too harshly, got into the habit of enjoying gargantuan meals and copious amounts of booze to go with. We had at the time the practice of table service a la francaise, which employed the old established custom of providing a member of staff for each guest. It was his duty to ensure that the food of your choice was on the plate, wine glasses were refreshed, condiments were at hand, and when needs must he would accompany you with a firm supporting arm to the end of the sideboard where a screen gave privacy to using the potty, which was kept in a small compartment also in the sideboard, along with everything else. All this was jolly good fun but not all the staff were as loyal to their masters as they might have been and as the tongues of guests got looser so the blackmailing of their owners got more commonplace. “Should I disclose to her Ladyship what you said last night my Lord?” “Oh pray no, how much to keep a still tongue?” By the mid-1740’s it was of such concern that a choice had to be made; stop drinking so much and encourage discretion or, once the food for the meal had been delivered to the dining room, dispense with the servants. So it was that we invented serve-yourself dining room accessories. Cupboards with zinc liners to keep things hot, cupboards with lead liners to keep things cold. Hostess heater trolleys are nothing new. Decanter stands on which to place the bottles and decanters of wine, wine labels to tell what was in them, cheese coasters with little wheels enabling them to be hauled up and down the table top, and for extra napery, cutlery, plates of fruit and sweetmeats a three-tiered table on castors which could be moved behind each guest was invented. It was called a dumb waiter. The one illustrated dates from around the 1770’s, but it began life without any carving. If we 7 6 f e b r u a ry 2 0 1 1

BLY

move on to the early 20th century, when old English furniture was being bought by American collectors and their advisers, the most desirable was that of the Chippendale period, carved with elaborate designs in the manner of the master. But only a very small percentage was originally decorated in this way. Most was plain and simple. In order to supply a market demand plain pieces were carved, and this is one of them. So in answer to the question, if the carving had been original it would indeed have been an important piece, but it is not.

Curiously the new habit of laying out the table in preparation for the meal, and servants appearing spasmodically, merely to clear and disappear, which is basically how we have eaten formally at home or in restaurants ever since was known as service a la russie. Our use of French terms to describe so much of our menus and mealtimes dates back many centuries. For example the old –Tudor times – French word for pudding was void. This described the period after a meal when the great dining hall was cleared for dancing. While the room was being voided guests took a bowl of pudding and some wine and went for a stroll onto the ‘leads’ or rooftops or into the garden or, in bad weather, up and down the gallery where pictures were hung as a diversion. That’s why if you sell pictures you have a ‘gallery’. If you sell antiques you have a shop. So the pudding itself had become known as the void. But around 1600 we adopted ‘modern’ French and the new term for void was desert. Another really useful piece of culinary equipment is the entrée dish. Most we have today are rectangular with tops that have detachable handles to enable double usage, and are made of silver or silver plate. They were originally used to contain a light cooked dish to be served before the main course, to herald its arrival, being an ‘entrance’ after a soup. The dishes illustrated are of Sheffield Plate and date circa 1830. They are a typical pattern with a nulled or ‘gadroon’ border around the edges and they can still be used today for they retain heat most efficiently. There are certainly temperatures for different types of wine that will ensure it is served and drunk at its very best. White wines are generally ‘chilled’ and most reds are ‘room temperature’ or correctly ‘chambred’. That should have an acute accent but without it you can see clearly its meaning; the French word for room. We tend to connect chambre with warming but it should be nothing of the sort. When bringing a bottle of wine from the cellar it may need time to acclimatise, and to aid this the wine lovers of the Regency period developed numerous devices for putting their bottles near to the fire while shielding them from direct heat. One such is the illustrated and highly desirable shielded coaster with a silver inset label announcing ‘claret’. This is a rare object indeed, for as you can imagine so many of them went up in smoke! It is made of mahogany and dates from the early 1800’s. A votre sante. JOHNBLY EST ANTIQUES 1891. Tel 0144 2823030 Mobile 07831 888826. Website: www.johnbly.com Email: john@johnbly.com

Can’t Take It with You

N

o one wants to think about what will happen when they die. Perhaps this fact explains the shocking results of the research carried out by unbiased.co.uk which highlighted that nearly two-thirds of Britons do not have a valid Will in place.

In many cases, these limited entitlements may leave an already-distraught spouse with no choice but to sell the family home. Unmarried partners (who may be as committed to one another as those who are married) do not receive any automatic entitlement.

Potentially, this means that nearly two thirds of Britons are not leaving their loved ones financially secure. Katie Khakpour-Smith of Taylor Walton solicitors looks at the frighteningly stark implications.

Drastically, if you die without a Will and you have no surviving relatives, your estate will pass to the ‘Crown’, regardless of whether you may have wanted your assets to pass to your partner, friends or charities.

Dying without a Will, known otherwise as dying ‘intestate’, means that your estate will pass according to the rigid rules of intestacy. Dying intestate can have a devastating effect on individuals who are close to you and who you would otherwise have made provision for, had you put a Will in place.

Ensuring that a properly drafted Will is put in place is essential in order to provide for and protect loved ones, and benefit those who are not entitled under the intestacy rules

Sir Gerry Robinson’s current BBC TV programme, ‘Can’t Take It with You’ will hopefully go someway to curing the ‘Will-phobic’ nation. It is commonly thought that if you die without a Will your spouse will automatically inherit everything anyway. This is not the case. Without making a Will, the amount your spouse will receive is capped so that, where there are children, your spouse will only be entitled to received £250,000 (plus your personal possessions) and where there are no children but there are other relatives such as parents, siblings etc, the spouse is only entitled to £450,000 (plus your personal possessions). 8 2 f e b r u a ry 2 0 1 1

For the approximate one third of Britons that have drawn up a Will, it is as crucial to ensure that it properly reflects your intentions and that all possible outcomes and scenarios have been considered. It is sometimes sensible to provide an explanation (which can be in the format of a letter, stored with your Will) as to why your Will has been drafted in such a way (for example, to explain why one child may be receiving a larger share of your Estate than the other). This may go someway to preventing disputes or upset on your death, when you are no longer around as a point of contact to justify your Will. During a recent interview, Sir Gerry Robinson said that it is “vital to write a Will and to get it right because a lot of unnecessary hurt can be caused to those you love and care

about if you don’t.” As ‘Can’t Take It with You’ makes clear, consulting a suitably qualified firm of solicitors is highly sensible to avoid the many pitfalls in preparing a Will and to make sure that the Will is valid and unambiguous. None of us can predict what is around the corner but we can control what will happen to the assets which we have spent a lifetime building up. Taylor Walton can provide you with technical advice and guidance, tailored to your personal circumstances and the assets which you possess. We will ensure that the issues which you should consider in making your Will are discussed with you. Seeking the expert advice which we can offer you will not only ensure that your Will is prepared validly and in line with your wishes, but it will also help you to minimise the portion of your Estate that may be liable to Inheritance Tax at 40%. Taylor Walton’s Private Client Department has consistently been ranked in the top tier by The Legal 500 for law firms in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire and specialises in the preparation of Wills, the establishment of family trusts and charities for philanthropic purposes. If you would like to discuss any of the issues raised in this article please contact Katie Khakpour-Smith on 01582 7165111, or by email katie.khakpour-smith@taylorwalton.co.uk
