THE RED ROOM AT THE CONNAUGHT

The Red Room bar at The Connaught, in the heart of Mayfair, is a homage to extraordinary female artists - a hideaway that guests discover through a velvet-curtained doorway from the hotel’s Champagne Room. This cocooning space showcases a collection of creative works in red - by four female visionaries, from one of the most celebrated of our time to a young Vietnamese artist.

Alongside the hotel’s renowned bars including The Connaught Bar, rated the world’s best, the Red Room is an entirely different experience for guests. Inside, a collection of art that has been years in the making awaits. Perhaps the most important piece hangs over the central marble fireplace, ‘I Am Rouge’ by celebrated FrenchAmerican artist Louise Bourgeois.

Another piece by Bourgeois is a ruby-red hologram, from an untitled series of 8 holographic pieces from 1998. California-based photographer Trina McKillen addresses themes of beauty and ugliness, spirituality and profanity and life and death through her work.

‘Composition #8’ is the only photographical piece amongst the collection. ‘Halfway to Sunset’ dominates another wall - an oil painting by Vietnamese Ti-a Thuy Nguyen from her series Floating in the Nothingness.

The bar is designed by Bryan O’Sullivan, who continues to put his signature stamp on Maybourne drinking spots – creating the space as a ‘home within a home’ with the feel of a collector’s living room –the ultimate sanctuary in magnificent Mayfair. A cocoon-like snug in ombre scarlet allows guests to sit in convivial anonymity.

Food and drink are at the heart of The Red Room, with an impressive list overseen by Daniel Manetti, Director of Wine. The Connaught’s legendary wine cellar features over 3000 different labels and over 30,000 bottles. Rare vintages and first growths arrive by custom-crafted marble trolley – accompanied by a capsule collection of six cocktails, each inspired by the wine selection and developed in tune with the changing seasons.

A menu of charcuterie – featuring British cheeses and hand-carved hams – including veal carpaccio, Gochuchang chicken oysters and kale tempura, has been designed to complement the wine list.

The Red Room operates a no reservation policy for all-day dining and drinks.

THE STORY OF INSPIRATION DOORS: CRAFTING LUXURY AND ELEGANCE FOR LONDON’S ELITE

For over four decades, Camel Joinery has epitomised exceptional craftsmanship in traditional joinery, excelling in the creation of bespoke timber windows, doors, staircases, and conservatories. Their unwavering dedication to the art of joinery has set a benchmark in the industry. However, with the emergence of aluminium, wood-look PVC, and composite Scandinavian windows, Inspiration Door Manager Bruce Dudman recognised an opportunity for innovation. After extensive design work and meticulous

research, he unveiled the Inspiration door range, marking a new era of elegance and luxury.

Drawing from our roots in Cornwall, where we are accustomed to installing products in both highly exposed and beautifully serene locations, we found our muse. The Inspiration door range embodies this connection to nature: from the breathtaking beaches where the sea meets the sand, reflected in our copper patina doors, to the rugged moors that inspire the golden hues of our bronze patina doors. Each design captures the essence of these landscapes, translating them into stunning works of art.

These doors are not only visually stunning but also offer exceptional insulation and compliance with the latest building regulations for security

and thermal efficiency. Equipped with state-of-the-art high-security locking systems, they ensure peace of mind by keeping the outside firmly outside. This combination of beauty and functionality sets the Inspiration door range apart, making it a preferred choice for discerning homeowners.

The Inspiration range begins with the Liquid Metal collection. Available in copper, iron, bronze, and gunmetal, these doors are enhanced through intricate patina and oxidisation processes. Each metal door boasts a unique, stunning finish, highlighting the team’s expertise in metalwork and joinery. The process involves meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that each door is a masterpiece in its own right.

To further drive sustainability within the crafting of our Inspiration doors, we use FSC Sustainable timber. Its certification is considered the benchmark for wood sourced from responsibly managed forests that meet the highest environmental standards. All wood used in the Tricoya® production process comes from sustainable sources such as FSC-certified, reclaimed, or recycled timber. Tricoya® acetylated wood not only competes on performance but also benefits the circular economy, locks away carbon for years, and comes from completely sustainable sources. This commitment to sustainability ensures that each door not only enhances the home but also supports environmental conservation.

“Clients are invited to select the perfect piece of stone from photographs before production, ensuring complete satisfaction with the final product”

Next in the collection are doors crafted from natural stone, bonded to the door to display the raw, timeless beauty of nature. Clients are invited to select the perfect piece of stone from photographs before production, ensuring complete satisfaction with the final product. The precision and skill required to integrate stone into these designs highlight the unparalleled artisanship involved. Each stone door is a testament to nature’s beauty, combined with human ingenuity.

The recent addition of sintered marble doors elevates the natural allure of marble to new heights, offering a product more durable than its raw counterpart. This range stands as a testament to Camel’s commitment to using sustainable materials with innovative joinery techniques, creating striking additions to any home. The sintered marble doors are not only visually appealing but also designed to withstand the test of time, combining elegance with durability.

Furthermore, Camel’s joinery department’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the materials used. Solar panels are employed to power the production facilities, ensuring that the energy consumed during the manufacturing process is renewable and has a minimal carbon footprint. By utilising solar panels, Camel not only minimises its environmental impact but also exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to sustainable manufacturing. The combination of renewable energy and sustainable timber practices positions Camel as a leader in eco-friendly production. This holistic approach to sustainability underscores our dedication to creating products that are both luxurious and environmentally responsible. Experience the elegance and superior craftsmanship of the Inspiration door range and transform your London residence into a masterpiece of design and security. Each door is a testament to our commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability, making them the perfect addition to any home. ROSEMEAD PREP celebrates award success following triumphant year

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery is delighted to reveal it has won an award at the prestigious Education Choices Awards 2024. The news comes following a successful year with a visit from the Independent Schools Inspectorate and a new Good Schools Guides review.

The leading Dulwich school has been awarded for best Improvements in EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging) at the awards which were announced in June in London.

Speaking about the news, Head Graeme McCafferty explained: ‘The whole school is thrilled to receive this award. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to providing the best possible education for every child at Rosemead, and I couldn't be prouder of our school's achievement.

‘My heartfelt thanks go to the staff, pupils and parents who have been on this journey with us in the last year.’

A spokesperson for the Education Choices Awards added: ‘We have been really impressed with the work that schools have been getting up to this year in order to envelop Equality, Diversity and Inclusion into their curriculums and work, and it has been really tough to decide each winner.’

The award comes at an exciting time for the Rosemead community. In November, the school was praised in its inspection report following a

visit from the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

The inspection celebrated Rosemead’s academic approach to learning, pastoral care and support and the positive influence of the school’s values, vision, and leadership.

‘A highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress is a significant strength of the school,’ the report explained. ‘A customised learning programme in mathematics, English and reasoning caters for pupils in Year 4 and above. This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals, impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.’

Last year, the school announced a merger with St Dunstan’s College joining St Dunstan’s Community of Schools. St Dunstan’s Group Head, Nick Hewlett, said: ‘The whole community is delighted with this award for Rosemead. The award rightly recognises the outstanding education Rosemead is offering as one of south London’s leading prep schools.’

Rosemead is also celebrating after a visit from the Good Schools Guide which praised the school’s leadership and its future direction.

‘We think Rosemead is definitely ‘one to watch’ as it carves out a specific niche in this corner of London,’ the review explained.

ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE

PREPARES PUPILS FOR THE WORLD OF TOMORROW

St Dunstan’s College, south London, has championed a progressive approach to education for over a century, with the opening vision of the school in 1888 being to provide a curriculum ‘in advance of the present time.’

The school’s first Head, Charles Maddock Stuart, was a pioneer in heuristic education, stating that it is not so much what a child knows that is important but more how (he) comes to know it – a revolutionary concept for the time. St Dunstan’s was one of the first schools in the country to have science and technology laboratories built to service a curriculum with significant time devoted to hands-on scientific and practical experiments.

“Earlier this year, St Dunstan’s was named ‘Most Progressive School in south-east England’”

Today, St Dunstan’s modern senior school curriculum builds on the legacy of its founding Heads. Students enter the school embarking on a Renaissance education, studying a deliberately wide range of academic subjects whilst proactively developing skills and thinking that will support them for life, and committing to a variety of co-curricular activities in a programme that is embedded into the timetable and structured around the College’s values.

‘Our world is changing at breakneck speed. A truly globalised future dominated by AI and biotechnology will require different skills and attributes from the young people we are educating today,’ Group Head Nick Hewlett explains. ‘Our social values are more precious to us than ever before, and so are they under threat, as we

inhabit a society where the art of rhetoric has diminished and the polarised, entrenched view has consumed us, amplified as it is through the platform of globalised cyber-space. We have a duty to respond to this in the curriculum we offer.’

Earlier this year, St Dunstan’s was named ‘Most Progressive School in south-east England’ at the Private Education Awards 2024 and was awarded the best Diversity and Inclusion in Sport at the Education Choices Awards 2024. In 2022, St Dunstan’s was also named Independent Senior School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards in London, which are known as the Oscars of education.

Blackheath Halls welcomes back Oliver Johnston and Idunnu Münch to the project, who have performed previously as Paris(La belle Hélène 2019) and Dido (Dido and Aeneas 2018). With Katherine Broderick, Michel de Souza and Janis Kelly joining the cast for the first time, this promises to be a really special year.

Soprano Ailish Tynan, Blackheath Halls Opera Patron says; As we go from strength to strength at Blackheath Halls we are becoming ever more ambitious and this year we have an amazing starry line up of opera singers in Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana. What an incredible experience this will be for our community chorus and orchestra…. and of course our audiences!

Director Harry Fehr says; Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana is a really good fit for this project, which our massed chorus of local enthusiasts will enjoy performing as much as the audience will enjoy watching. This production will emphasise its timeless nature, while drawing characters whom we can all understand and relate to. With its gripping story, soaring music, and running time of just 70 minutes, it's a great piece both for seasoned opera lovers and first-timers.

HILL HOUSE

FLOWER FESTIVAL

Friday 13 – Sunday 15 September 2024 For one weekend only,

Hill House.

In the 6th iteration of the annual Flower Festival, leading designers will respond to the theme of “nature unbound”. There will be no tidying or pruning as the space is given over to the immense beauty and power of the natural world. Expect stunning floral designs that twist and turn and fill the chambers and stairways of the Gothic Castle.

The exhibitors are drawn from across the UK and beyond, including up-and-coming designers excelling in cutting-edge creativity. The flowers are homegrown too, highlighting the most beautiful varieties that Britian has to offer.

At the heart of the display are sustainable practices utilising the latest floristry techniques. The flowers are either grown by the artists themselves or are sourced from local farmers and other sustainable businesses. No floral foam or single-use plastics are involved, with the only waste being a large compost heap. Founder of Blooming Green Bek Bibby is also giving an illustrated talk on the “no dig” method of flower growing, which enriches the soil without disrupting it.

A programme of events will be held to accompany the festival and allow visitors a special insight into the beautiful displays. This includes an evening tour and talk with Royal florist Simon Lycett along with a free glass of fizz, and curator tours throughout the long weekend led by Leigh Chappell with coffee and croissants.

There is a fascinating look at Ikebana, the centuries old Japanese flower-arranging art, demonstrations of how to dry wildflowers to make them weightless and wonderful, and an open discussion with Gardeners Question Time panelist Ashley Edwards on the role of plants in wellbeing, as well as many more events, talks and workshops throughout the weekend.

With no fake flowers, the very nature of the

art means the show can only run for three days, and to protect the interior of the Grade I listed building there are also limited tickets available so make sure you don’t miss out by visiting the website and booking now.

EVENT PROGRAMME

The Festival is a fitting flowery end to the summer at Strawberry Hill, following the incredible exhibition showcasing two masterpieces by Jan van Huysum that ends on 8 September. THE DOS AND DON’TS OF FAKE TANNING IN RAINY SUMMER WEATHER

WARM AND WET WEATHER DOESN’T GO HAND-IN-HAND WITH APPLYING FAKE TAN. SO, EXPERTS REVEAL THE TOOLKIT YOU NEED TO ACHIEVE BRONZED SKIN WITHOUT THE SUN.

ANOTHER PERK OF SELF-TANNING IS TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM HARMFUL UV RAYS

If you’re not heading to sunny Europe this summer, you may need a boost from a trusty bottle to evoke a glowing tan. But Britain’s quintessentially soggy season means the ordeal of full-body tanning is even tricker than usual in the muggy weather.

Whether you’re a novice or seasoned fake-tanner, you can improve your routine for a rich and radiant look. So, we’ve consulted tanning experts to reveal their tricks of the trade for the perfect home tan.

Create the best environment inside

“The main thing to keep in mind when applying fake tan when the weather is hot is to try to keep the skin as cool as possible,” notes Beauty Pie’s editorial director and in-house beauty expert, Nicola Moulton. “When the skin is hot, it naturally tries to cool the body down, resulting in sweating, which in turn prevents the skin from absorbing anything, especially something as light as a tan solution.”

So waiting at least a couple of hours after a hot shower is imperative, and opt for a quick-drying formula. Solutions that are light, such as a mousse as opposed to a lotion, will lessen the feeling of suffocation on the skin. “Formulas with hydrating ingredients, like hyaluronic acid and peptides will dry down into the skin, and you will wake up with a lit-from-within glow,” says Moulton.

Just like selecting a foundation or concealer – deciding which shade of tan to go for alongside the formula is imperative to a fabulous finish. If you have pink undertones, go for a tan that has a more golden guide colour, if you have cooler undertones, go for a tan that has a green guide colour to avoid washing you out. The Bare by Vogue Williams line has a whole ‘shop by shade’ approach, which is helpful for newbies.

Prepping and application

In hot and wet weather your skin will have produced even more oils than usual. Just as we prep our face before make-up, we need to prep our skin before tanning. For best results, exfoliate your whole body so that the tan will blend in and absorb more evenly.

While prepping your skin for tanning is imperative, the process truly begins with getting the application right, and this means taking your time. “Take it section by section, starting from the legs upwards. Use sweeping motions to ensure a seamless finish and leave hands, feet and face until last,” advises Charlene Flanagan, make-up artist and co-founder of tan and skincare brand, Ella & Jo.

Applying an oil-free barrier cream to particularly dry areas, such as knees, ankles and knuckles will prevent streaks and patchiness. As opposed to adding new product to the mitt, using what’s leftover from your body application to sweep across your wrists, hands, ankles and feet means you won’t have darker patches.

If you feel you’ve made a mistake, don’t panic. Even the most seasoned self-tanners miss spots from time to time. “If you notice streaks or uneven patches, don’t worry, you can just reapply a gradual lotion onto these areas and you’ll see a blend within four to six hours” says Flanagan.

How to avoid streaks in the wet weather

The most important thing to have in your tanning canon – potentially more so than the tan itself – are tools. “To avoid streaks and orange

palms, invest in a top-quality tanning mitt,” says Flanagan. “This ensures a smooth and even application, while also preventing unwanted staining.” Avoiding any chances to introduce humidity into the mix is essential. While carrying waterproofs is advised, Moulton suggests to avoid showering right before you tan and make the most of the coolest time of day, such as early mornings or evenings.

Top tip for fake tanning when it’s hot and muggy

One thing that particularly applies to hotweather tanning is the age-old adage to never wear tight clothes immediately after. “Tight clothing can rub against freshly applied fake tan and cause streaking or smudging,” says Flanagan. “Opt for loose, breathable clothing until your tan has fully dried and developed. Wear loose-fitting clothes that cover your skin to protect the tan from getting wet,” notes Moulton, “and carry an umbrella!”

To avoid at all costs…

When we’re in a rush, it can be tempting to load on the product, which results in a sweaty and streaky mess. “Never try to apply your fake tan with a DIY application (e.g. socks, cloths) or your hands,” says Moulton, “and don’t try loading fake tan on your face with the same volume as your body.” Instead, try a face-friendly tanning mist or liquid. “This formula is ultra-fine to ensure no product gets stuck in fine lines or dry patches,” says Moulton. Opting for one with brightening niacinamide will help care for your skin as well as giving a sun-kissed glow. Flanagan emphasises the importance of prepping. “Rushing through the preparation process can result in a patchy or uneven tan. Take the time to exfoliate, moisturise and remove any unwanted hair before applying fake tan for best results.”

Whenever the term “country club” is mentioned, retro visions of cableknit cardigans and navy-cream palettes spring to mind à la Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. However, this summer, designers have taken to revamp the preppy look with clashing colours, micro minis and androgynous silhouettes.

Where does country-club chic come from?

WOLF, EVIE LARGE BAG - GREEN LEAVES

The more commonly known “preppy style” was popularised back in the late Nineties and early Noughties by teen hits such as Clueless and CW’s Gossip Girl. Defined by pleats, polos and an academic polish; the “preppy” aesthetic derives from the “prep” schools that served the wealthy children of North America’s elites.

whites and preppy pleats has ignited. Country-club chic combines elements of quiet luxury, but builds on it with sporting motifs, as Panzoni notes, the trend “blends Sportscore’s comfort with the sophistication of old prep, creating a sense of effortless elegance reminiscent of classic sportswear.”

Retro athletic attire has been a welcome trend for a while now, but emerging brands like Alo Yoga and Varley have taken the tennis dress in a trendier direction than we’ve seen before. Elegant pleats paired with a sporty sneaker or oversized jacket is a sure way to modernise the classic tennis attire.

The heyday of preppy fashion coincided with the rise of the excess in Eighties fashion, and was cemented by Lisa Birnbach’s The Official Preppy Handbook, which was a tonguein-cheek examination of both the garments and lifestyle that defined the country club set.

Since it’s inception, the preppy aesthetic has taken many forms: from Princess Diana’s off-duty gym wear to Alexa Chung’s eponymous label, and to Bella Hadid in Gucci today.

Depop’s in-house trend specialist, Agustina Panzoni, identified ‘Eclectic Prep’ as a key fashion theme for SS24, noting that “This trend mixes and matches streetwear imprints with classic brands. With searches for ‘preppy’ up 730% since January, shoppers are also looking for boat shoes (up 296%) and loafers (up 326%), with top brands to shop including Lacoste and Dior.”

VARLEY, AMAR DRESS

One thing is definite: country-club flair has taken on a new form as Gen Z style the trend with messy hair and chunky urban accessories for an effortlessly chic look.

The polo

Little introduction is needed for this summer staple. The preppy polo is back with a vengeance and is incredibly versatile. Coming in the form of oversized rugby shirts and tight-Nineties minis, the polo made it’s debut during fashion week on the spring/summer runways of Miu Miu, Gucci and Diesel.

Plain polos can be an easy alternative to your classic crew neck, while striped shirts can be dressed up with a tailored blazer or edged down with distressed denim.

Mark Hogarth, Harris Tweed ambassador and luxury style commentator, notes, “As with any fashion movement or trend there are parameters, but you can input personal style within these boundaries,” something the Italians call ‘sprezzatura’, “this is loosely translated as a studied carelessness.” This nonchalant attitude lends itself perfectly to the re-appropriation of the polo.

Pleated tennis chic

Chunky loafers

Mary Jane shoes have dominated autumn and spring street style – but late summer is beckoning in the chunky loafer. A quintessential country-club fad, the loafer has become a Gen Z staple thanks to Gucci’s bulky reinvention at Milan Fashion Week, sported by guests including model, Bella Hadid.

Many traditional brands have used this resurgence as an opportunity for a modern rebrand. “G.H. Bass could claim to be the quintessential for a chunky loafer,” notes Hogarth, “but Clarks are among the many other brands worth a look.”

Heritage prints: modern cuts

A welcome twist to the aesthetic is taking classic styles and incorporating modern cuts. Heritage tweed often evokes thoughts of your grandpa’s suit jacket, but thanks to runways showcasing heritage prints with sparkle-threaded embellishments, this is no longer the case.

“The general rule would be to have a plain tweed jacket, or even a suit, and accessorise with brighter colours – scarf, socks, and tie,” says Hogarth. “Tartan is a bit more difficult as a bright pattern will dominate any look.” Hogarth suggests taking one colour out of the multi-toned print and leading with that as the palette for your outfit to avoid a look becoming too busy. Taking a slouchy tartan blazer or a mini tweed skirt is the perfect way to bring old-age fabrics into 2024.

Coquet with colour

The biggest giveaway of any country club look is in its colour palette. Usually showcased through navy, creams and tans, this year is all about adding colour to the classic Sloane Ranger ensemble. Going bold with prints, hues and accessories is the crème de la crème when it comes to modernising country-club chic. Elevating preppy staples with contrasting colours and finishing the look with a messy undone hair-do is the ultimate way to bring preppy into 2024.

HATS OFF!

THE SUN IS OUT! HERE IS THE BEST HEADWEAR TO CELEBRATE SUMMER –EVEN IF YOU’RE NOT A HAT PERSON… BY

As well as a good layer of SPF, a cool hat is an essential to top off your summer look. Wide-brimmed hats have recently made waves on the runway, and as the weather warms up, it’s important to add stylish protection.

From flopping-lampshade styles to the nonchalant baseball cap – these are the on-trend styles to accessorise your beach-day or weekendaway.

Cool crochet

It feels like crochet makes a comeback every year. Ideal for layering, crochet makes a statement beyond your clothes, and having been big for bags last year – 2024 is all about the crochet cap. Coming in the form of a knitted cap, bucket or even visor – crochet is certainly one of the cutest hat trends this summer.

Statement straw

Raffia and floppy hats have become the headgear of the summer, making any look go from English garden to Saint-Tropez style. Unfortunately, not all of these types of hats are made for our cramped carry-ons. Opting for soft-structure over stiff fabric is best – not to mention it’s kinder to your wallet. Crochet raffia is a good option to survive being stuffed in a suitcase.

On-trend bucket

Easy to bundle up and pop in your bag as you’re flying out the door – the bucket hat is the ultimate Gen Z summer accessory. From statement prints to humble pastels, the on-trend bucket is an intergenerational staple whether you’re at Glastonbury or in your garden.

Reliable baseball

The true style that will always work is undoubtedly the baseball cap. Possibly the least glamorous of the styles – the baseball cap has a cool insouciance to it. When styled right, it can give nautical chic vibes, or look like you’re a humble millionaire trying to discreetly run errands. Either way, a simple colourway can often edge up the most classic of looks – or at least hide you from accidental bump-ins.

Floral season came back with gusto earlier this year, with celebrities from musician Myleene Klass to presenter Alex Jones showcasing their best floral gowns at the Chelsea Flower Show. However, if you’d rather accent your look as opposed to going full-force with a frock, a statement hat is the way forward – adding a feminine and quaint country touch to any outfit.

HOW TO WEAR WHITE THIS SEASON

IF WIMBLEDON HAD YOU WONDERING HOW TO STYLE AN ALL WHITE OUTFIT – HERE ARE FIVE WAYS TO PULL OFF THE LOOK. BY LARA OWEN

KATHERINE JENKINS WAS DRAPED IN ALLWHITE FOR DAY ONE OF THE TOURNAMENT

A CANVAS TO MAKE A STATEMENT

If you’re wanting to break up the white, using it as your base tone is the best way forward, creating a statement with an understated canvas. Paige Lorenze, girlfriend of American tennis player Tommy Paul, used this style trick with a strapless polka-dot dress for Wimbledon’s first round. Pinstripes and polka-dots are classic prints often utilised by the Princess of Wales, to add interest to an outfit without standing out. Kate used this tactic on her first Wimbledon appearance in 2011 in a Temperley London tiered dress, with pleats evoking posh pinstripes and the dresses on the court.

WAISTCOAT AND WIDE-LEGGED WHITES

The waistcoat renaissance has certainly been a welcome one – and doesn’t look to be disappearing any time soon. Perfect for all occasions, a polished waistcoat-and-trousers co-ord offers a cool alternative to a dress for any events this summer. Stars including Sofia Richie Grainge has sported the all-white waistcoat look in linen recently, whilst model Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley has kept it smart with a tailored cotton trouser. Paired with heels and a smart clutch, or flat sandals and sunnies – the clean lines of a tailored white waistcoat offers a laid-back look every time.

ALL WHITE EVERYTHING

If you’re feeling bold – and particularly accident-resistant – opting for an all white look from head-to-toe is an elegant and eye-catching way to style monochrome. Opera singer, Katherine Jenkins, indulged in an all-white draped dress with a white belt and bag for Wimbledon this year, and its simplicity let the tailoring do the talking. Styling with contradicting fabrics, such as silk and leather, can help add detail to the look without busying the ensemble.

THE SUIT

An obvious option for a smart and slick alternative to the formal midi dress is the suit. An all white suit manages to emanate an easy-breezy, preppy feel, without seeming too severe – and the trick is all in the ivory. Actress Rachel Weisz sported an all white suit to watch Wimbledon last year with her husband, Daniel Craig. Mixing in different shades generated a soft insouciance to the outfit, and added a feminine flair to the structured ensemble.

THE STRAPPY SUNDRESS

When crafting an all-white look, it’s best to go back to the basics – and there is nothing more foundational in a capsule wardrobe than a plain but perfect white sundress. Whether you prefer frills and lace trims à la Pippa Middleton, or something more timelessly simple – a well fitting white dress is an outfit you can rely on. Paired with detailed sandals, classic tortoiseshell sunnies and a statement bag – this white dress formula is one everyone can get behind.

Whether buying the finest tea as a gift, or a Harrods bag as an everyday luxury, our own-brand items need to stand for the same standards that we

“The new Harrods collections will launch throughout 2024 and 2025, to build and present a unified expression of the brand under one clear creative direction”

and reimagined alongside the launches in Harrods own-brand product. In 2025, customers can discover an entirely new Harrods brand collection, perfect for gifting.

As well as a renewed focus on quality and brand alignment, the new Harrods lines have been designed with a commitment to sustainable sourcing, and with sustainability considerations forming a core element of the design, development and manufacturing of new products. Harrods has developed and started to roll out its Harrods Responsible Sourcing Standards, putting sustainable sourcing at the heart of the relaunched range. Harrods commitment is that by 2030 all products bearing Harrods in-house brand will meet Harrods Responsible Sourcing Standards, encompassing material specifications - including excluded materials and requirements for ingredients and components, production requirements and supplychain transparency. Throughout 2024, products made from cotton, leather, nylon and cashmere aligning with Harrods Responsible

expect of every other brand in-store. Every element of these new lines, with a focus on quality of materials, design, and creativity, has been considered through a luxury lens. From the sourcing of cashmere from local British producers to designing personalised leather embossed stationery, Harrods reflects the care and consideration that our brand delivers to its customers across its entire portfolio”.

Throughout 2024, Harrods is celebrating 175 years of the exceptional in a year-long anniversary campaign, with meaningful partnerships, world-wide exclusive products, and celebratory experiences. With Harrods own brand, the anniversary celebrations are being toasted through gifts, food and drink. The iconic Harrods bears have been reimagined for the anniversary, created in celebration with some of the world’s most sought-after-luxury brands, including Burberry, Bulgari, Valentino and Charlotte Tilbury. Opening as a tea merchant in Knightsbridge in 1849, Harrods are celebrating this history with a unique blend of teas, including loose lead creations that celebrate the past, the present and the future of Harrods.

AHEAD OF THE V&A OPENING ITS MULTIFACETED EXHIBITION, NAOMI – WE UNCOVER THE MODEL’S MOST ICONIC LAYERED LOOKS. BY LARA OWEN

NAOMI CAMPBELL’S

STYLISH LIFE IN LAYERS AS SHE CELEBRATES 40 YEARS IN FASHION AT THE V&A

The V&A is launching a new exhibition that explore the life and career of supermodel Naomi Campbell.

With a selection of her archival pieces, the exhibit, NAOMI, goes beyond fashion, diving deeper into Campbell’s layered career, activism and cultural reach.

Open to the public from June 22, it provokes impressive, sensitive and evocative stages of Campbell’s life.

To celebrate, here are some of those moments embodied in iconic outfits, peeling back the layers of her life in looks.

Vivienne Westwood tartan suit

Meeting on a Los Angeles photoshoot in 1992, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss were among the founders of the Nineties supermodels. Campbell’s outfit pictured at the end of London Fashion Week perfectly encapsulated how many layers there were to come of the young model.

Against Moss’ fairly reserved monochromatic look, Campbell’s overlapping tartan suit paired with ultramarine accessories and a hot pink feather boa were emblematic of the 23-year-old’s rebellious and carefree spirit.

Newspaper and dollar bills dress

From then on, there was no stripping back for Campbell. The following year she modelled a wedding dress made entirely of newspapers and dollar bills at the Harvey Nichols and Perrier New Generation Designers Show.

Perhaps the perfect choice for the rising star who was making leaps and bounds in her career whilst having a tumultuous relationship with the press. The abundance of ruffled newspapers were symbolic of how the mainstream press disguised what the model felt was the real Naomi.

Hair flick and fringe

Alongside copious clothes – wigs and extensions have been a part of Campbell’s canon throughout her career. Routinely shifting her image required flexibility; thus layering extensions over wigs and intense styling contributed to bald patches.

Telling the Evening Standard in 2017, “I lost a lot of [my hair] with extensions,” she revealed, “I am more careful and do things differently.” Campbell dismissed the idea of black hair as a political issue, noting that “everybody in the world wears wigs… I do whatever the job calls for”. Campbell’s persevering attitude unveiled a deep insight into the model’s ambition.

Frills and ruffles

Layering doesn’t mean covering up. In 2004, Naomi sported a sheer tiered mini dress at the Louis Vuitton party for the brand’s fall/winter collection. The bohemian ruffles and natural hair evoked a more laid-back countenance in Campbell. The neutral colour palette, eclectic accessories and sheer bodice foreshadow some of the model’s relaxed future looks.

Deconstructing her image

The year 2017 saw Campbell taking a more structured and straightforward approach. Angularly layering suit trousers, skirts and formal lapels, this look symbolises Campbell’s ability to do it all.

Integrating bold accessories in the form of fishnet tights and a bejewelled nose ring epitomised Campbell’s chameleon-like character. Whilst the layering seemed disjointed, she held it all together with her poised persona.

Remembering her roots

Whilst mainly sporting simple silhouettes and muted hues, Campbell reminded the world that she is never predictable at the 2019 MET Gala. The model harked back to her feather boa frolics with this pale pink Valentino gown – a piece featured in the coming exhibition.

Themed ‘Camp’ Campbell imbued the freedom to be oneself and bearing all through this sheerly layered look. Offering strength in the form of a bold feathered cape and fragility through lace tights, Campbell’s look was unapologetically authentic, revealing her true disposition.

Sleek and simple with Dolce and Gabbana

As Campbell enters her fifth decade, the model is leaning into bearing all. When walking for Dolce Gabbana FW 2024 show, she once again sported an all black outfit which experimented with textures and opacity through its use of lace, silk and mesh.

Using the most delicate of fabrics, this look evoked a vulnerability in Campbell, as the mourning veil almost disguised her face of true emotion. It seems the supermodel has become more comfortable in simple silhouettes and monochrome palettes, as she continues to reveal more of herself, whilst always leaving a protective facade: in this case, one of a mesh veil. vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/naomi

Summer of Interiors: 2024

With summer reaching its peak, our minds are turning turn to thoughts of out-of-office messages, feeling some sun on our faces, and finally finding time to wind down. Focus lands on our indoor and outdoor spaces and how we can indulge in, or escape, the heat.

As the world of interior design continues to evolve and progress, the term ‘trend’ gets thrown around a lot. While we’re not focused on fleeting TikTok-esque crazes with cryptic names, it’s evident that the design zeitgeist and the broader cultural atmosphere, coupled with our individual style and personal history, does gently influence our design choices. These elements serve as our creative compass, empowering us to authentically express ourselves in our homes, and make living that bit more delightful.

For 2024 so-far, the general theme has been... no theme. As recent design shows Salone del Mobile and 3daysofdesign disappear into the distance, new shapes, sizes, colours, tones, textures and materials are ripe for the picking. Colours are fusing in new and interesting ways, contours are getting more audacious, influences range the plain to the

pioneering, and furniture is helping us to all connect.

Dive into our summer interiors report 2024, where there’s something for everyone, the rulebook is relaxed and it’s all about doing what makes you feel good and showing who you are. So, what’ll it be?

WHISPERING LUXE:

Whispering Luxury focuses on high-quality, designer icons that are crafted to last a lifetime, and rooms should still be places that feel beautiful but not overdone, while we’re adding in the occasional statement object, conversation-prompting pieces of design to show off our personality and taste in a way that elevates the everyday, as well as being elegant.

It zooms in on excellence, timelessness, refinement, and careful selection, but with a dash of fun and personality mixed in. More characterful, less austere. A way to live with both chic-ness and joy.

COLOSSAL CURVES:

We’re still stuck on curves – and we’re not

sorry. They’re just more soul-enriching and soothing than harsh and sharp am-I-going-to-bump-myself-on-that angles and lines.

Over the past few seasons, we’ve seen curves move through the home, first on upholstered pieces then in accessories and smaller items until the curved hard furniture movement came last year. As our homes get ever comfier and more comforting, curves have become bigger, bolder, braver and better than before. And it feels good.

This all goes hand-in-hand with the contemporary penchant for ‘seating systems,’ seats and sofas that extend and lengthen to create multi-person seating islands which provide endless seating arrangement options in a litany of shapes.

SURPRISING SHADES:

It works, it really does, the pop of that-doesn’t-match brightness smiling out from a space putting a grin on faces too. Moving forward, we’re liberating, loosening up and getting ready to experiment. It’s time for ‘Unexpected Colour’ to enter the home, a zing of vividity where there’s no business being one. Be it lemon yellow, sage green or glowing magenta, the only rule is that the pigment should stand out and draw the eye.

Let’s break free from the design constraints, and dictate ourselves the colours that will take the spotlight from room to room. Showcasing a single splash of standout colour or a restrained few pieces of pigment in a space is –there’s no other word for it – fun.

TALKING POINTS:

The time of the TV as the entertainment centre du jour is over – so why should all of our furniture angle towards it? Let’s shake off that convention and make rooms more about people again, about talking and contemplating. About hosting and games and drinks and snacks and generally connecting. Try to put that phone down for a moment. Sounds good doesn’t it?

Decorating-wise, it’s really quite simple. Some kind of vague circle formation is key, do bear in mind the other beautiful things to enjoy – window views or artworks or fireplaces – but seating should be primarily focused on the most important thing in the room: other people.

PAPER FOLDS:

Paper-inspired forms are seeing a rise in 2D-esque experimental approaches to furniture construction, from Ron Arad’s sculptural One Page chair and footstool for Moroso which was conceived when considering the curves of a single piece of paper, to Tiziano Guardini and Luigi Ciuffreda’s Narinari chair for B&B Italia: back and seat seemingly folding together origami-like. Meanwhile Lema’s Blanca armchair by Roberto Lazzeroni appears to be composed of shapely cut out pieces, leaving a gaping recess in the back, while Gallotti & Radice’s H2O chair by Studiopepe is decorated with a circle cut out from its backrest, and the brand’s Selce-T table – also by Studiopepe – comprises of cut-and-stick-style fragmented shapes. chaplins.co.uk

GOVETTE WINDOWS

Govette Windows Ltd specialises in the manufacture, supply and installation of steel windows and doors to domestic, conservation or heritage properties.

We are a family owned and run business and have been established since 1994.

We have just been awarded the prestigous Steel Window Association award for Best Domestic Project 2024. The project is based in Weybridge, Surrey.

The architect designed single storey extension wraps around the full width of the building’s rear elevation, with a 2.4 metre long, L-shaped window creating a stunning corner feature. Multiple double doors, with side panels and fixed lights above, form the two main 3430mm tall screens where the line of the steel mullions emphasise the height of the fenestration.

All of the W20 sections are hot dip galvanised and polyester powder coated in RAL 1035, Pearl Beige, while the 16mm double glazed units are Krypton filled and contain soft coat as well as low iron glass with warm edge spacer bars to offer high thermal performance. Steel doors and windows also provide peace of mind in terms of their rugged resistance to forced entry and long term durability against the elements.

Commenting on the choice of steel frames, the owner of the property, said: “This was something I’d always wanted to do,

because I think steel framed windows just have that timeless, industrial appearance and would really suit the style of our old Edwardian house. This is a really modern addition to the house – almost like a 180 degrees extension across and around the side, rather than the typical ‘box on the back’, and the large area of glazing really suits it. Govette Windows was fantastic to deal throughout – they really reassured me over thermal performance of steel systems at the beginning. Overall, it’s been a lovely job throughout.”

Our products are made by us in our factory in South Godstone, Surrey. We are members of the Steel Window Association, FENSA and ‘Made in Britain’. Where applicable our products are registered with the BFRC.

Feel free to contact us for more information or a written estimate.

REALISE THE POTENTIAL OF YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES

“Any outdoor space can be made special. Any outdoor space can be made ‘green’”, says Luke Richards, Owner-Director of Terra Firma Landscapes, a company that has been transforming London’s gardens for almost 40 years. “We can transform spaces as small as a window box or as large as a football pitch, and beyond! Pocket parks or suburban and city gardens can all provide their owners with a relaxing refuge and an enticing escape.

We understand the unique constraints and challenges of smaller spaces and have a wealth of solutions, including creating terracing, recesses, and sunken areas. These sculpt the illusion of more space through height, depth, and a varied perspective.

Then we can add flowers and shrubs for contrast, colour and texture. This approach works just as well for commercial premises if they have borders, lawns, car parks or other spaces ready to be transformed. If you own a business, why not enhance your local area and help your staff and passers-by to see and enjoy a new oasis instead of bare tarmac or plain grass.

“Admittedly, we have never been called out to plant up a single window box, but perhaps we might! Our pleasure comes from our ability to unlock the potential of any outdoor space and seeing the reaction of our clients, as they understand the joy that transformation can give them.

“To take another example, people love a ‘wow factor’, having something special to them that feels unique and makes them stand out. Outdoor spaces such as gardens can have a ‘wow factor’ as much as any evening dress, well-tailored suit, or bespoke artwork. One striking example is Victorian tiling. Known as renowned as builders

and engineers, the Victorians created long-lasting, beautifully patterned and coloured tiling installations that made many homes memorable. Today, we honour their craft as it lives and breathes in the capable hands of our craftsmen who are specialists in the design and fitting of Victorian floor tiles and contemporary geometric designs. We have many years of experience in the repair and care of traditional Victorian black and white path tiles and in the myriad of Victorian mosaic tile schemes.”

Terra Firma Landscapes offers a full Victorian tiling design, installation, and restoration service with our supply partner, London Mosaic. They can source new and reclaimed tiles, including architectural tiles, encaustic tiles (where the pattern is inlaid into the tile), geometric tiles, heritage tiles and micro mosaic tiles, along with additional period accessories such as daisy grates, path edging, steps and York stone paving. They also provide contemporary options such as porcelain paving.

“We can transform spaces as small as a window box or as large as a football pitch, and beyond!”

Capturing moments. Finding Dreamers. Illustration:

Life as you perceive & interpret it. My life is about images.

I started creating images Back When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth. I’ve worked as an award-winning freelance illustrator for over 40 years, with clients across the world. I’ve exhibited my artwork in several local and national shows; one-man exhibitions, and I have two illustrations in the permanent collection of the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas, Texas. A lot of my work has been architectural; some has been for children’s books; and the rest comprise a large portfolio of images.

When I ventured out on this Illustrator gig, I wanted to illustrate Adventure Stories. I studied the great illustrators of the 19th and 20th Centuries, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. I wanted to use realism to illustrate adventure stories. The sort of books one could find in libraries, Back When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth. I spent about 10 years honing my skills and learning to illustrate digitally. Sadly, the Children’s Illustration market left me behind. There are few illustration opportunities today for Adventure illustrations for children, using adult characters. There was a time when Children’s Books were just about the same as books for adults, but with illustrations and less gore.

I have an improbable goal of bringing them back.
