Opened in December 1969, the Jermyn Street club Tramp has welcomed a who’s who of A-list celebrities through its unassuming doors and into the 300-capacity basement of bacchanalia. Dame Vivienne Isabel Westwood OBE is a British fashion designer known for her influence on punk fashion and dressing the Sex Pistols, as well as causing a stir with her political opinions and outspoken attitude. London’s most iconic private members club, Tramp is celebrating 50 years at the pinnacle of the nightlife industry
O
pened in December 1969, the Jermyn Street club has welcomed a who’s who of A-list celebrities through its unassuming doors and into the 300-capacity basement of bacchanalia, below. Original members included Sir Mick Jagger, Sir Roger Moore, Sir Michael Caine and sisters Joan and Jackie Collins, but the club quickly became a magnet for movie stars, musicians and even royalty, and before long, Tramp became a byword for sophisticated debauchery. During the 1970s it wasn’t uncommon to see George Best on the dance floor while Sir Matt Busby frantically called the club’s front desk, trying to locate his absent star player; Marlon Brando holding court in the restaurant over a glass of scotch and Amaretto; and Frank Sinatra relaxing on his favourite seat in the lounge area, where guests would fall over themselves at the sight of Ol’ Blue Eyes as they emerged from the adjacent women’s toilets. Sir Rod Stewart once said of the club: “I remember coming out of Tramp when I used to play Sunday morning football and I’d get home at about four or five in the morning and I’d get up about three hours later for an 11 o’clock kick off - smelling of booze!” The club’s original decor has been lovingly preserved, with beautiful, 17th Century oak panelling throughout and chandeliers from the Rothschild Palace hanging from the ceilings - save for one, memorable absence, where legendary The Who drummer, Keith Moon leapt from his table and brought the chandelier crashing to the floor before being escorted from the club screaming: “You can’t ban me from Tramp! Where else will I go?” He was welcomed back 24 hours later, after apologising profusely and paying for the damage. But while celebrity anecdotes undoubtedly helped to build interest in this mysteriously secretive club on the border of St. James’s and Mayfair, it has flourished through five decades thanks to its core principles: To offer luxurious service and fine dining in a relaxed and sociable environment; and to treat every member as a VIP. General Manager, David Fleming, says: “Tramp is
more than just a members club. It is an intimate space with a limited membership and we pride ourselves on being able to welcome each and every guest by name, remember their favourite drink and where they like to sit in the restaurant or bar. “The club was built on quiet word-of-mouth, with our details being passed on by members on film sets, in business meetings and between bands, and over the years it has almost become a ‘password’ around the world; members frequently tell me how they’ve been to a far flung place and been given the best table in a restaurant because the owner is also a member of Tramp. “We talk about our membership as a family and in many cases, they really are - we have original members whose children and even grandchildren have grown up and joined the club and three generations can use it together. “If these walls could talk, they’d have a lot of stories to tell; but of course, they wouldn’t say a thing because that’s the Tramp way.” The club launched its 50th anniversary celebrations with a star-studded party in May, attended by Sir Rod Stewart, Sir Michael Caine, Dame Joan Collins, Bill Wyman, Nathalie Dormer, Mark Ronson and many more, and members will enjoy further special events throughout the rest of the year. Prospective members may apply via the club’s website at www.tramp.co.uk/memberships. But remember: What happens in Tramp, stays in Tramp.

The Meteoric Rise of
Maddox
16 APRIL 2020
It can take a long time to get established in the world of art. Van Gogh sadly wasn’t recognised for his genius until after he passed away. For an art gallery to have built up a worldwide reputation in just four years is extraordinary. In that time Maddox have opened three galleries in London, one in Los Angeles and another in Gstaad.
W
hen starting a gallery, the simplest and easiest way to become known is to sell works by established artists. Maddox took a different route. They’ve become known as the art brand that discovers, nurtures and breaks new artists (as well as representing a few famous names). The list of breakthrough artists is long. Coco Dávez, a hugely talented Spanish multidisciplinarian, had a show in May 2019 called Faceless. Maddox Gallery staged an impressive campaign to promote the exhibition and rolled-out an advertising campaign that dominated the capital for a month. The exhibition was a complete sell-out, which was a testament to her huge talent and the gallery’s ability to generate interest. Likewise, Haris Hukem, an incredibly exciting young fine art photographer, hit London in September of last year to much acclaim. With his fashion background, the London based fine art photographer creates extraordinarily sensuous and vibrant images commenting on contemporary culture. Once again, sales were excellent. Maddox Gallery is renowned for its fresh and innovative approach to sourcing talent and as such, APRIL 2020 17
Art
the luxury lifestyle art brand is attracting a new breed of artist, predominantly those who wish to shape the future narrative of the art world. In October 2019, Maddox gave a brand new graduate artist, Sebastian Chaumeton, fresh from Chelsea College of Art, a launch show at their Shepherd Market gallery, which catapulted him headlong into the art world. His work borrows from famous artists, reimagining in an extraordinary way and with multiple subtle references to Japanese culture. Maddox’s representation of this emerging talent didn’t end there, however. Chaumeton is set to unveil his second installment in September 2020 at Maddox’s flagship gallery on Maddox Street. Conversely, an artist who has grown with Maddox since the beginning is Bradley Theodore, now a global name. With origins in the street art genre that encompasses New York’s Jean-Michel Basquiat to Bristol’s Banksy, he has created his own very special kind of aesthetic beginning with several startling murals on walls all over NYC. His most recent work is a compelling and unique amalgam of a classic oil paint style vigorously applied, with the use of haunting skeletal figures, creating an unlikely but unique look. He’s on course to becoming an iconic figure in contemporary art. Bradley’s list of famous admirers stretches from Bill Clinton, to Whoopi Goldberg to Thierry Henry. Social media has played a vital role in establishing him in the art firmament, Instagram and Twitter being vital tools in breaking new artists and the partnership of Bradley and Maddox have harnessed it well. In fact, Maddox is one of the leading galleries for street artists including KAWS, Keith Haring and Richard Hambleton.
So that’s the art creators, what about the art lovers? Maddox’s services extend far beyond providing gallery spaces in which to peruse artwork. The brand offers an art advisory service and has helped hundreds of art lovers and investors decide which art investment is right for them. This century, fine art sales have become a phenomenon. The market doubled in sales volume between 2002-2013. When all the major indices tumbled in 2018, investment in art rose by 10.6%, according to Art Market Research’s Art 100 Index. But as with all investments you need to know when to buy and when to sell (if you can bear to part with that wonderful Bradley Theodore piece.) On the subject of money, Maddox has long been involved in raising plenty of it for charitable causes. In the past four years, it has staged several fundraisers for charities such as Teen Cancer America and London Air Ambulance (to name a few), donated works to numerous charity auctions, consistently support David Yarrow who donates to Tusk and Wildaid, hosted the fundraising evening for the Cara Delevingne Foundation raising £240,000 on the night and, have worked closely with CALM, the men’s mental health charity. This young art brand is definitely one to watch in 2020. With works by such masters as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Banksy, Damien Hirst, The Connor Brothers and Joseph Klibansky on display, Maddox Gallery is the last word in fine contemporary art, hosting private events, expert art tours and visits from some of the biggest names in the art world throughout the year. If Maddox art is cutting-edge, so is their approach to the business of art. www.maddoxgallery.com

Until 6 September 2020. A new look at the extraordinary life and work of the pop art superstar.
22 APRIL 2020
ndy Warhol (1928–87) was one of the most recognisable artists of the late 20th century, yet his life and work continue to fascinate and be interpreted anew. A shy, gay man from a religious, migrant, low income household, he forged his own distinct path to emerge as the epitome of the pop art movement. This major new exhibition at Tate Modern – the first at the gallery for almost 20 years – offers visitors a rare personal insight into how Warhol and his work marked a period of cultural transformation. Drawing upon recent scholarship, it will provide a new lens through which to view this American icon. Featuring over 100 works from across his remarkable career, the show will shed light on how Warhol’s experiences helped shape his unique take on 20th century culture, positioning him within the shifting creative and political landscape in which he worked. While he is best known for his iconic paintings of Coca-Cola bottles and Marilyn Monroe that held up a mirror to American culture, the exhibition will emphasise recurring themes around desire, identity and belief that emerge from Warhol’s biography. Key works from the pop period, such as Marilyn Diptych 1962, Elvis I and II 1963/1964 and Race Riot 1964, will be examined in relation to contemporary issues around American culture and politics, while Warhol’s limitless ambition to push the boundaries of media will be represented via his famous Screen Tests 1964–6 and a recreation of the psychedelic multimedia environment of Exploding Plastic Inevitable 1966. Visitors will also be able to experience Warhol’s
floating Silver Clouds 1966 installation, initially meant to signal his ‘retirement’ from painting in favour of moviemaking. He famously stated that ‘good business is the best art’: the exhibition will look at how Warhol’s forays into publishing and TV, as well as his interest in club culture. The exhibition will emphasise his skill as a painter and colourist with a room dedicated to the largest grouping of his 1975 Ladies and Gentlemen series ever shown in the UK. These striking portraits depict figures from New York’s transgender community, including iconic performer and activist, Marsha ‘Pay it no mind’ Johnson a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Warhol’s final works of the 80s, such as the poignant Sixty Last Suppers 1986 – on view at Tate Modern for the first time in this country – will be considered in relation to the artist’s untimely death as well as the unfolding HIV/AIDS epidemic, which ultimately went on to impact the lives of many in his close circle. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, as well as an extensive programme of public talks and film screenings with exclusive new merchandise collections in the gallery shops. A guide to London’s most expensive garden squares
Eaton Square Gardens
L
iving or working in London can create a buzz like no other. Commuters, residents, prestigious stores, vibrant bars and restaurants - the atmosphere for some can be
electric. In contrast, in some of the most exclusive areas of London are private, tranquil green spaces….the city’s garden squares. They’re a protected species, some accessible only with a key and surrounded by some of the most expensive homes on the market. Many are period properties often constructed in crescents, terraces and squares. So important are they that, in 1931, the London Squares Preservation Act was introduced to protect more than 400 from being built over. Let’s take a look at the most expensive and how much its privacy and exclusivity will cost you…
Carlton House Terrace Gardens, Westminster £8.79million Top of the list is this exclusive road just a short stroll from Buckingham Palace. A property will cost you an average of £8.79million. Former residents include 26 APRIL 2020
Prime Ministers William Gladstone, Earl Grey and Lord Palmerston. It is the location of what is thought to be Britain’s most expensive home, with rumours six years ago that a Saudi prince had sold 18 Carlton House Terrace for £250million.
Eaton Square, Belgravia £5.88million One of the most prestigious addresses in London. Famous residents include Prime Ministers Neville Chamberlain and Stanley Baldwin. More recently, advertising mogul Charles Saatchi and football managers Jose Mourinho and Sven-Goran Eriksson are all thought to have lived there. Eaton Square is a stone’s throw from Sloane Street – home to luxurious brands such as Gucci, Cartier, Dior and Versace.
Wilton Crescent Garden, Belgravia £5.35million Wilton Crescent was named after Thomas Egerton, 2nd Earl of Wilton. It has been home to royals, political leaders and celebrities ever since. Surrounded by a semicircle of graceful white-stucco houses, it’s a calm and tranquil place. Among its most famous residents were Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, a
British Royal Navy officer and uncle of Prince Philip, who was infamously assassinated by the IRA in 1979.
St James’s Gardens, Notting Hill £3.81million
The original plan was to build a circular building, but only the bottom half was completed. Between the arms of the crescent is a private garden, recognised as being of historic interest.
The gardens are laid out in an informal woodland style, dominated by fine chestnut and lime trees dating back to the 19th century. The garden is in the heart of the Norland Conservation Area, with the premiums surely pushed up by its close proximity to the open spaces of Holland Park, attracting many wealthy businesspeople and celebrities such as Sir Richard Branson and David Beckham.
Hanover Gardens, Notting Hill £2.97million
Thurloe Square, Brompton £3.76million
Markham Square, Chelsea £2.73million
The square is named after John Thurloe, an advisor of Oliver Cromwell, who owned the land in the 17th century. Sir Henry Cole (1808–1892), the first Director of the V&A Museum, lived at No. 33. The building is marked with a blue plaque.. Not only is the square dogfriendly, it also has a children’s playground and a stroll from the shops, restaurants and museums of desirable Knightsbridge.
One of Chelsea’s finest garden squares, situated north of King’s Road, and a short walk from Sloane Square. The building of the original square began in 1836 on the site of the old Box Farm orchard – owned by the Markham family. In 1935 the garden was laid out as a cherry orchard. After WW2, the square was redesigned by the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s head gardener to resemble a private country garden.
Rosmead Garden, Notting Hill £3.64million
These exclusive gated gardens are steeped in history and treasured sanctuaries amongst the hustle and bustle of our capital. Wealthy buyers from around the globe continue to be attracted to London’s squares, mainly due to their scale, style and timeless beauty.
Perhaps one of London’s most famous garden squares, having featured heavily in the Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts film Notting Hill. The space is quite unique among its contemporaries, with many of the homes surrounding it having direct access onto the green via a backdoor, making it a rear garden of sorts.
This peaceful woodland garden is situated within the Ladbroke Estate. Among its famous former residents was Dame Sylvia Crowe, the noted landscape architect. This communal garden used to be known as Hanover Terrace Garden, Hanover Terrace being the old name of Lansdowne Walk.
Markham Square, Chelsea
Kensington Square, Kensington £3.16million With an average property price of £3.16million, it was originally known as King’s Square, built in honour of the reigning monarch at the time, James ll. The garden is private and not open to the public, though it has taken part in the annual Open Garden Squares Weekend. Former residents include composer Hubert Parry, philosopher John Stuart Mill and John Simon the sanitary reformer.
Park Crescent, Marylebone £3million This crescent is among the most prestigious in the capital, in a desirable location at the north end of Portland Place and south of Marylebone Road. INTERVIEW: Michelin starred chef
Alain Ducasse
T
French chef Alain Ducasse is something of a legend – but as Ella Walker finds out, at its heart, his mission is a simple one.
he word ‘Provence’ effortlessly conjures up a sense of romance. Woodsmoke and the scent of garlic; huge, regimented fields of purple lavender; bottles of throatcatching olive oil, and bubbling pans of tomato-heavy chicken stew. Chef Alain Ducasse - although born in Orthez in the south-west of France knows the cuisine of the region better than most. And what he loves about it, he says, is its “simplicity and spontaneity”. “As in any culinary tradition, Provencal cuisine reflects a terroir,” explains the 63-yearold restaurateur over email (his English is not quite fluent), “the nature and the culture of people living there. Yet it does it with probably a higher degree [than many other places] - with a certain flair. “Provencal cuisine genuinely expresses the soul of the country. The tastes of the local produce is more intense, the recipes are altogether humble and supremely elegant, the recipes, transmitted [through history, largely] by women, are fantastically diverse.”
34 APRIL 2020
The chickpea, he continues, “may well embody this spirit of Provencal cuisine: a very humble product which can be magnified by the right recipe. Many dishes are made with chickpeas or chickpea flour, for instance the socca, a delicious speciality of Nice.” A thin, pancake or crepe, socca is made using only chickpea flour and water, with a little seasoning; you can’t get much simpler. Unless perhaps you’re cooking red mullet on Provence’s Mediterranean sea shore. “The recipe?” questions Ducasse. “Do nothing! Grill it gently, without scaling or cleaning it!” Of course, Ducasse, who became the world’s first chef to own restaurants carrying three Michelin stars in three cities (New York, Paris, London), does somewhat elevate Provencal cooking, particularly at his restaurant and inn, Hostellerie de l’Abbaye de la Celle, which has just celebrated its 20th anniversary. “It’s a love story,” says Ducasse of the l’Abbaye. “When I discovered it, in 1999, I instantly felt in love with the garden and its century-old chestnut trees and the harmony of its 18th century architecture. I immediately

thought about creating a restaurant there with a few rooms.” An hour’s drive from Marseille (someone from the hotel is often able to collect you from the airport in an electric car), along the north curve of the Saint-Baume mountain ridge, the l’Abbaye is pale yellow, fringed with olive-green shutters, and adjoins a 12th century Benedictine Romanesque abbey. Home to just 10 rooms, a Michelinstarred restaurant, as well as a conservation vineyard and a kitchen garden you could easily eat your way through if left to your own devices, it’s a pretty delicious place to spend a weekend. At the core of its ethos and menu as with Ducasse’s wider businesses - is an awareness of sustainability and seasonality. “Proposing dishes with more vegetables and cereals and less meat is very important,” notes Ducasse. “In parallel, we are very demanding of our producers. They have to work according to sensible environmental principles, respecting seasonality.” At the dawn of a new decade, looking forward to l’Abbaye’s next 20 years, Ducasse is not filled with new resolutions as such, instead, he stands by “the resolutions I make to myself every THE DETAILS morning: to create something new for my contemporaries.” L’Hostellerie de l’Abbaye de Ducasse was raised on a farm, before la Celle offers superior double becoming an apprentice chef aged 16 and rooms from €239 per night going on to train under legendary chef based on two sharing. It all comes back Ducasse’s family farm though. “I remember my grandmother asking me to go to the kitchen garden and pick ripe vegetables. I remember the drops of white juice dripping from the lettuce stalk when cutting it,” he recalls. “I remember the smell and taste of the roast chicken my grandmother was preparing every Sunday for the whole family. I remember the chocolate cake I dared to make for Christmas when I was 12.” Of his career achievements though, he says his most significant is “the creation of naturalite (naturalness). This is a very radical and innovative approach we
developed at my Hotel Plaza Athenee, in Paris. No meat just vegetables, cereals and fish from sustainable sources.” It is “a thought-provoking cuisine in a prestigious venue; a demanding cuisine in a glamorous three Michelin-star restaurant”, he says. You might think it would be a tricky proposition, trying to keep a handle on his many restaurants while retaining the essence of each, like at l’Abbaye. But Ducasse explains that each focuses on a single idea - to offer people “a moment of pure happiness”.

F
or as long as I can remember what it feels like to shake and shiver, I’ve been taught to fear the cold. Always wrap up warm. Don’t leave home without a coat. And never, ever go out with wet hair. Even the fact a cold is called a cold seems a little unfair. Why should a temperature drop get the blame for sneezing and a snotty nose? And since when did the weather become contagious - can you really catch a chill? A subject of superstitious old wives’ tales more fearsome than the bogeyman, we’ve been conditioned to dread and detest “the cold”. There’s even a name for extreme cases - frigophobia, where sufferers believe subzero conditions could lead to death. But what if we were to turn the tables and embrace the very thing that scares us? “There’s nothing to be frightened of,” assures therapist Nina Medin, as I slowly crunch through ice and slip into a skin-prickling pool of 4C river water - the centrepiece of new highly-hyped, high-end design hotel Arctic Bath.

But a commitment to it’s cultural context makes 2020’s most exciting hotel opening much more than a pretty face.
The not-so-chilling story As synonymous as the sauna is with Finnish culture, taking a cold bath is at the core of Swedish wellbeing. The pair go together, in fact, like ying and yang: diametrically opposing but complementary in so many ways. Based on the teachings of 19th century Bavarian priest Sebastian Kneipp, who cured his tuberculosis by taking regular river dips, there’s a theory switching between hot and cold can boost your immune system. Contrary to popular belief, the cold can be good for your health. The idea to create a hotel dedicated to the wellness tradition started with a conversation 10 years ago over dinner at neighbouring Treehotel, an equally striking and
fantastical project featuring cabins suspended between the pine trees. Bertil Harstrom, the architect responsible for the outrageous Bird’s Nest (a tangle of twigs with beds), had ambitions to build a cold bath in an imaginative and innovative style. “He spent years searching for the right location,” says AnnKathrin Lundqvist, an interior designer and one of Arctic bath’s co-founders. “Watching how the Lule River flowed and how the ice formed and melted.”
Developing a spa addiction
outside to the cold bath, a circuit which becomes addictive after a couple of days. Starting with a tentative toe wriggle, I soon progress to full immersion, tilting my head back and gazing at the stars. Eventually, I even manage a short swim. The feeling? Like a million electrodes pulsing through my body; my mind cleared of all thoughts bar one. As Nina explains: “When your body kicks into survival mode, that’s when you really see results.” At present, the spa has only one treatment room (although there are plans to build a separate building in the next few years), with a menu of facials and massages curated by eco and vegan Swedish skincare brand Kerstin Florian.
“There’s a theory switching between hot and cold can boost your immune system”
Sauna etiquette is second nature to Scandinavians, but for many of us, it’s a mystery. A SaunaGus spa ritual is the perfect introduction. Moving between Arctic Bath’s wood pellet-fuelled saunas, Nina throws essential oils mixed with water onto hot rocks and circulates the steam by swinging a towel above her head. Dining the sustainable way Sticking to locally-sourced food is a challenge this far north - especially in winter. But Kristoffer Astrom, who’s been lauded as Scandinavia’s only gourmet Sami chef, and his kitchen partner, Maarten De Wilde, have committed to using whatever Mother Nature gives them. Their creations are showcased in nightly five-course menus (included in the room rate): six-day cured trout rests on a bubbly pillow of celeriac puree and lingonberries glisten on a surprisingly tasty reindeer blood pancake. Squeamish for some, but this is sustainability; typical of Sami culture, nothing goes to waste.
Putting the property in context A 10-minute walk away, 600-person village Harads has points of interest: a dusty museum filled with antique looms and rat traps, a church with an eyeball painted above the altar, and an Iranian pizzeria where reviews swing like a pendulum from dreadful to excellent. Learn about community quirks from local guide Thorbjorn Enberg, who’ll invite you into his home for Swedish fika (coffee - Swedes drink an eye-popping average of eight cups a day - and cake). An hour’s drive away, Pite River’s Storforsen rapids tell the story of this region’s “timmerflottning” industry, where logs were floated from forests to sawmills. (It’s a slice of history that inspired Arctic Bath’s design.) 54 APRIL 2020
A walkway hugs the raging water, and on frosty days evaporation dresses trees with crystal tips. But perhaps the most memorable activity on offer at Arctic Bath is a morning spent with Sami reindeer herder Anna Kuhmunen in Jokkmokk. After feeding her herd with fuzzy, soft bundles of lichen, we sit around a fire in her lavvu listening to folkloric tales and learning about the modern day struggles of the original inhabitants of “Sapmiland”. “I will die to protect my reindeer, until my last breath,” insists Anna, tearing a piece of Sami flatbread gahkku to share. “They keep my people alive.” Fluctuating temperatures and an uncharacteristically warm January have created problems for her herd, whose main food source is currently locked beneath a layer of ice on the forest floor. “We hope for more snow soon.” Eyes bluer than glacial pools and with cheeks rubbed crimson by the wind, Anna is at home in the cold. Having quelled my fear of low temperatures, finding new strength in sustaining shivers, I think I’ve become a fan of it too.

Modern boarding T
his academic year Cranleigh celebrates 20 years of full co-educational boarding. Lots of changes have taken place over the last two decades under three Headmasters. Girls first joined the boy’s houses at sixth form in the 1990s, there are now four dedicated girls’ houses to match the four boys’ houses and the genders take part in every aspect of school life together. Academic lessons and some sports are mixed sex, pupils all eat together in the dining hall and cheer each other on in house activities. Each house is paired with one of the opposite sex, so there is great support for every house competition, from hockey to chess. But the houses themselves are single sex spaces where pupils can feel completely at home, equipped with comfortable furniture and state of the art kitchens and bathrooms. Deputy Head Pastoral, Dr Andrea Saxel, says, “The paired houses provide that sense of family and togetherness that makes the school special, and the fact that it is a small school with less than 700 pupils means that everyone gets to know one other. It makes the environment very much more supportive. Modern boarding is all about the children having opportunities they would not have outside of our environment, they have time to find the things they are passionate about.

The children who board here are really making the most of their school day. Rather than being stuck in a car commuting to school they are out on the pitches and in the studios rehearsing, or attending evening lectures from visiting speakers or simply hanging out with friends in the boarding house.” Boarding at Cranleigh is weekly, so pupils aged 13-18 arrive on Sunday evening and stay in school until they’re collected by parents after matches on Saturday. Around 70% of the 670 pupils board, and even day pupils generally stay until after prep at 8.45pm because there is so much to pack into the day. At Cranleigh Prep School the boarding is flexible, pupils aged 7-13 are encouraged to try boarding and can stay for just one night a week or five. Boarders return on Monday morning and around one third of the school community of 340 pupils flexi board. A gentle start to boarding in this cosy environment can often be easier than boarding for the first time later on, when school life is busier and regimes less flexible. Neil Brooks, Cranleigh Prep’s Headmaster, says “We welcome boarders of all ages. Some start on just one night a week and many will go on to flexi or weekly board as they move up the school. Pupils, particularly those arriving at 11+, are advised to build up to weekly boarding in their final two years if they are planning to board at their senior school at 13+. Boarders benefit both socially and academically from our nurturing boarding environment.” www.cranleigh.org

And breathe… how pupils can benefit from meditation
T
he candle is lit, the lights are dimmed. As another busy school day begins, pupils in year 7 close their eyes, focus on their breathing and let their thoughts drift away…. St Benedict’s has recently introduced 20 minutes of meditation each week for all pupils in year 7, and this will eventually be offered to other year groups. Children in the Junior School are also offered a mindfulness session each week after school. This is to support pupils’ mental health, by encouraging them to recognise how they are, emotionally, and to teach them the value of living in the present. Guided by form tutors, meditation provides young people with a valuable oasis of stillness and silence in school life. Feedback has been very positive, with pupils finding meditation relaxing, calming and a good way to focus and to be self-aware. Every day children are constantly bombarded with information, spending most of their energy in their ‘thinking’ brain, losing connection with how they actually feel. Most of us have fallen prey to sensory overload: just look around a train carriage, and note how many people are on their screens – catching up with email,

or skimming through social media. We are almost constantly informed, entertained, petitioned, pestered and diverted. Overstimulation creates excess dopamine in the brain – the neurotransmitter tied to the reward and pleasure centres of the brain. While this makes us feel good, the more we have, the more we need. Common symptoms of overstimulation are the inability to sit still, racing thoughts, headaches, eye strain, insomnia and even depression. Meditation has huge benefits: it can produce the neurotransmitter serotonin, which regulates our mood and alleviates anxiety, increase well-being and focus while reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Research has also highlighted outcomes of increased selfknowledge and self-acceptance through meditation. In making regular space for meditation, St Benedict’s hope to help their young pupils to recharge, mentally; to be aware of their feelings and practise the vital skill of switching off the constant noise of 21st century life. Kensington Park School 6th Form

eighbouring the Natural History Museum and Science Museum, KPS Sixth Form’s location is unique. What truly sets the school apart, however, is the learning experience they offer their students. Their approach blends the best elements of established Sixth Form schooling with the characteristics of a college environment to create a bridge between school and university. Small class sizes help focus students’ learning in lessons that are delivered by some of the finest teachers in London. Their pastoral system, based on the Oxbridge tutorial model, is something that drew praise from Ofsted (in October 2018). Students have weekly one-to-one meetings with their tutors, who have oversight of their progress and wellbeing. Parents receive a weekly report from tutors with an update on their personal development. The location encourages students and teachers to take learning out of the classroom and ground it in practical research. They have close links with Imperial College, where students enjoy their lunch and benefit from access to gym and sports facilities. Experiences such as these provide a valuable taste of university life, helping students mature and ensuring they are well-equipped to hit the ground running

when they take the step up to university. For families interested requiring boarding, the state-of-the-art boarding house, situated in a prime location is truly ‘home to a 21st Century experience’. Boarders have the unique opportunity to explore one of the world’s greatest cities – predominantly on foot! Last year, students have been on a real smorgasbord of trips, providing a mix of cultural enlightenment, sporting entertainment and good old-fashioned fun. On the entertainment front, the common room provides a relaxing place to wind down every evening to cinematic film nights or friendly foosball matches. Boarders also frequently praise the team of onsite caterers, who ensures that the dining menu is inviting and fresh! More than anything, being a new school has enabled Kensington Park School to put their students in the centre of what they do. Many schools talk of an approach focused on the individual but at KPS they have this running through the veins of the school. The students thrive under their care and in the space of this one year, they have demonstrated this through resilience, kindness and passion for learning. DAME VIVIENNE
WESTWOOD
D
ame Vivienne Isabel Westwood OBE is a British fashion designer known for her influence on punk fashion and dressing the Sex Pistols, as well as causing a stir with her political opinions and outspoken attitude. It’s no surprise that her 76 years on earth have included some very interesting moments. Vivienne studied fashion and silversmithing at the Harrow School of Art in London at the age of 17, but left after one term saying that a working-class girl could never make a living in the art world. She went on to work in a factory and then as a primary school teacher. During this period, she created her own jewellery, which she sold from a stall on Portobello Road.
72 APRIL 2020
“In April 1989 Westwood appeared on the cover of Tatler dressed as then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher”
She met Malcolm McLaren, and they moved into a council flat in Clapham. In 1971 McLaren opened a boutique at 430 King’s Road called “Let It Rock” later known as “Sex” and now World’s End. Westwood created clothes drawing inspiration from bikers and fetishists. The “punk style” included bondage gear, safety pins, razor blades, bicycle or toilet chains on clothing and spiked dog collars/chokers for jewellery, as well as outrageous make-up and hair.
During this period, McLaren became manager of the punk band, the Sex Pistols, and subsequently the two garnered attention as the band wore Westwood’s and McLaren’s designs. It was their ability to synthesise clothing and music that shaped the 1970s UK punk scene. Vivienne Westwood went on to open four shops in London, and by 2015, operated 12 retail outlets in the UK with 63 worldwide. In April 1989 Westwood appeared on the cover of Tatler dressed as then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The suit that Westwood wore had been ordered for Thatcher but had not yet been delivered. The cover bore the caption “This woman was once a punk”. She was awarded an OBE in 1992, and in 2006, the title of “Dame” by the Prince of Wales. In 2007, Westwood was awarded the gong for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design at the British Fashion Awards. Vivienne Westwood has long been known for her political activism and using her brand to draw attention to causes such as climate change, nuclear weapons and human rights. In January 2015, she announced her support of the Green Party, and openly supports Amnesty International, Environmental Justice Foundation and Friends of the Earth. For more than 35 years, Westwood has designed clothes for heroes. Outrageously flamboyant, they are beautiful, brave and often swim against the tide. Her Red Label collection has a huge presence at every London Fashion Week. www.viviennewestwood.com

Katie Wright catches up with make-up artist Zara Findlay, who reveals her top tips for bold lips.

Berry
erry-toned lips have become a winter beauty staple and this year, they’re more relevant than ever, thanks to the AW19 catwalks. From deep merlot at Versace and Roksanda, to juicy plum at Simone Rocha and Tommy Hilfiger, to purple so dark it was almost black at Yohji Yamamoto - this season, the bold lip rules. But if you’re used to wearing nude tones or classic red, darker shades can be rather intimidating. “Lipstick is all about confidence and how comfortable you feel wearing it,” says Zara Findlay, pro make-up artist at Bobbi Brown. Here, Findlay explains how to find the best berry shade for you, plus three ways to wear the trend, and how to tailor the rest of your make-up...
“If you want the colour to be sheer, use your finger to swipe a little colour and press it on your lip”
Finding your perfect berry “I like to call this the Five Finger Trick. Pick up five 74 APRIL 2020
berry lip colours that you’re attracted to - even if you don’t think they will suit you - in different finishes such as matte, sheer or shiny. Swatch them onto your finger tips and looking into a mirror, place each finger against your lip. You will instantly see whether you like the colour against your skin. Just think ‘yes, no or maybe’. This is all about the process of elimination. Clean off the lip colours that are definitely a ‘no’ and you are left with one or two to try. From there, you will be able to decide which is your favourite colour - or you may just end up taking them both.”
How to wear your berry lip
“Lipsticks can we worn in all kinds of ways. If you want the colour to be sheer, use your finger to swipe a little colour and press it on your lip. This will give you your sheerest coverage and a ‘lip stained’ effect. You can add your favourite lip balm on top for a more moisturised
Beautiful finish. To get a medium colour pay off, swipe the colour directly on the lips. If you’re worried about how much colour the lipstick has, my favourite tip is to line and fill your lips with your go-to nude lip liner then add the lipstick on top. This will give you a slightly more muted version of the original colour. To get the fullest colour pay off, maybe for a special event, pick a lip liner that is a similar tone, line the lips, apply lipstick, then add a gloss on top for a fullcoverage, glossy finish.
Make-up to wear with berry-toned lipstick “If you’re wearing it sheer, you can doll up your eyes and cheeks to add a little more colour to the rest of your face. I love running a little of the lipstick between my fingertips and bouncing it on my cheeks as a soft blusher. If you’re wearing it as medium coverage, you are able to play with how bold or subtle the rest of your make-up is. If you’re wearing it with full colour pay off, it’s best to keep the eyes really subtle. Maybe just a clean liner and a soft wash of a nude shimmer shadow.”

CREATING
BRIGITTE BARDOT’S ICONIC BOUFFANT HAIRSTYLE The French film star’s famous ‘do is as popular today as it was in the 1950s.
W
hen it comes to famous hair styles throughout history, has their ever been a more influential ‘do than Brigitte Bardot’s? While cuts like Mary Quant’s sharp pixie crop or Jennifer Aniston’s The Rachel may come and go, the Bardot bouffant looks as cool now as it did when the French movie star shot to fame in the 1950s. Now, a new range of products from the Brigitte Bardot Foundation aims to help you get the movie star look - whether you’re blonde or not. “Tousled, teased, textured... Bardot had the finest bedhead that ever was,” says hairstylist and Bardot ambassador Paul Herrington. “With modern relevance, Bardot’s iconic look has been emulated by successive generations of supermodels like Claudia Schiffer, Giselle Bundchen, and Kate Moss.” Combining a bouffant shape at the crown of the head and loose, messy waves, the style gives volume to the locks while framing the face. So how’s it done? Here, Emmanuel Esteban, session stylist at Salon Sloane, offers a step by step guide on how to create the iconic Brigitte Bardot look... 1. Starting with clean, damp hair, spray with Bardot Lift + Volume Spray (£19, Pretty Little Thing) on the roots to give enough lift and achieve natural body, then spray heat protection on mid-lengths to ends. 76 APRIL 2020
2. Dry your hair upside down using a paddle brush (I like to use natural bristle brushes) with downward strokes ensuring you are smoothing the cuticle and creating volume on the roots. 3. Once hair is dry, divide it into two sections. First, the top section of hair from the temples to the nape of the neck. The second section is the rest of your hair. 4. On the lower part of your head spray with Bardot Texture Spray (£19, Pretty Little Thing) at least six inches away from your head and curl in large sections using a curling wand to achieve a wavy, textured, messy look. 5. On the top section, curl your hair with a large barrelled tong starting from the back of your head, sectioning horizontally through to the front towards your face focusing on achieving root lift. 6. Backcomb the very top section of your hair. Start with gentle combing at the front, gradually building up the volume towards the back, including the crown this will create the Bardot bouffant shape. Then spray lightly with hairspray. Brush all of your hair gently with a paddle brush. 7. Without being precise, take the top part of your hair and pin it at the back of your head to achieve a half up-half down look - secure the pin pushing upwards to create more volume. To finish the look, pull out fine pieces of hair around your face to frame it.

FEARNE COTTON: F
Ella Walker catches up with the TV and radio presenter, who’s back with a new cookbook, Happy Vegan.
78 APRIL 2020
earne Cotton isn’t actually vegan. Shock horror. In fact, she is quick to note: “I bloody love an omelette.” And yet, the 38-year-old has written an entirely plant-based, animal-free cookbook, Happy Vegan. In its introduction, she explains this isn’t a contradiction. Vegetarian from the age of 12, with a brief foray into pescatarianism in her 20s, she still cooks meat, fish and dairy for her family (husband Jesse Woods, children Honey and Rex, and step-children Arthur and Lola), and most of her baking involves eggs. However, the Londoner is not one to eschew reinvention. Her telly life started aged 15 as a presenter on The Disney Club, followed by Diggit alongside her long-time friend Reggie Yates. Radio 1, Top Of The Pops and Celebrity Juice presenting gigs swiftly followed, but now, instead of the celeb partying you might expect from a well-connected TV darling, her Instagram feed is a serene corner of the internet, devoted to yoga (and enviable leggings), vegan cookery, and the lessons she’s learned from the empowering, positive people she interviews on her Happy Place podcast. From kids’ TV presenter to wellness conduit - the woman is all about moving forward and doing what feels right for you, when it feels right. And so, now, she explains, “I am a vegetarian who eats probably 90% vegan.” Chickens arguably take the full brunt of the fact she’s not 100% there; the most challenging aspect of going totally plant-based, she says, is not eating eggs. “I do love eating eggs,” she adds again, for good measure. Then there’s the fact vegan options can often be limited at times. “If I’m out travelling with work, it can be trickier,” she muses, “so I may eat a little butter in those moments.” Egg and butter-fuelled work trips aside, “more and more people are eating vegan and are up for experimenting,” says Cotton. Hence Happy Vegan, which she says is for “vegans; people that have never tried vegan; and those like myself, who eat a lot of vegan food but want to learn more,” - and that’s regardless of the motivation behind your decision. “We all have a better understanding these days of how food affects us, and also how our food choices affect the planet,” adds Cotton. “Whenever you decide to eat vegan, whether it be for a month or once a week on
HAPPY VEGAN “Cotton spent a lot of time in LA in her 20s, and ate at a lot of vegan restaurants while there”
a Monday, it’s still going to be beneficial to you and the planet.” In terms of the recipes, “fun and easy” is her mantra - so don’t expect to have to go shopping for a vast array of new ingredients, or for a specific vegan larder. There are cauliflower steaks and tofu fingers, tomato dahl and vegetable kofta wraps, plus the odd recipe that might raise a few surprised eyebrows. Take her blueberry and cannellini bean tray bake with tahini and maple syrup icing, Cotton’s way of tricking her kids into eating more protein. And she is particularly proud of her veggie black bean sausages. “I was dead-set on creating my own kind of homemade banger,” she buzzes. “They’re packed with flavour and so easy to make.” Cotton spent a lot of time in LA in her 20s, and ate at a lot of vegan restaurants while there, so she’s found it really exciting to see so many restaurants closer to home increasingly adopting the ethos, or at least offering more interesting vegan options. She’s all about making it a lifestyle that’s more accessible, especially at home, even getting her kids involved in the kitchen. “I cook with the kids a lot,” she says. “They luckily love it, but it’s mainly cakes they enjoy making! Banana loaves, choc energy balls Honey’s fave - chocolate cake... They love it all.” It echoes memories she made as a child herself; she recalls making jam tarts with her Nan Ruby, ones that were “super gooey with a rough crust!” However, Cotton understands that not everyone finds cooking enjoyable, and it can feel even more daunting if you’re trying vegan recipes for the first time. Her advice - particularly if cooking is something you find stressful - is to “keep trying to cook from scratch for fun”, and to “put great music on, take your time if you can, and be proud of what you created”. Ultimately, it’s about finding what works for you. “If you don’t eat enough or eat too much sugar, or binge on a certain food too much, you’ll of course feel rubbish,” she explains. “Eating in a balanced way can be challenging with how fast-paced life is, but if we have fun cooking and try new stuff, and notice how we feel after eating certain things, we have a better chance of having more energy and a better mindset.” Happy Vegan: Easy Plant Based Recipes To Make The Whole Family Happy by Fearne Cotton, photography by Andrew Burton, is published by Orion Spring, priced £20. Spring/Summer 2020 Collection
T
he dialogue between man and nature is at the very heart of the Giorgio Armani SS20 campaign, presented in a landscape of burnt colours, rocky surfaces and clear skies. The warm, intense light is shaded by coloured sheets that veil and unveil glimpses of wild nature. Giorgio armani captures its spirit, proposing a new wardrobe in which everything blends together with spontaneity and elegance. Visual references to worlds, atmospheres and cultures overlap, and a new harmony emerges from what appears, on the surface, to be accidental. An echo of colours and materials runs through the collection, sketching out a movement that passes from the density of earthy colours – browns with touches of blue, purplish blue and turquoise, and dark greys moves through liquid blues, and finally evaporates into ethereal notes of lightest pink and pearly grey. And in this delicate progression, the rich silk becomes tulle, organza, georgette.
The chromatic story is a journey of shapes, increasingly lighter and more weightless. The beginning is typical armani, a suit. The look is familiar, but the kimono-style cut of the sleeves, the roundness of the shoulders, the emphasis on the waistline define a new silhouette, one which follows the curves of the body. Blazers are worn with trousers, either fluid or slim-cut. The skirts are long and fluttering; parkas are crafted from organza, and the fil coupĂŠ processing dematerialises the surfaces of the jackets that closely embrace the bust. Everything is transparent and weightless, even the multiple layers. The overlapping floral prints create duplicate images and mirage-like effects. The long dresses sway like haloes of mist, until they rise in the gentle, polychrome sparkle of the long evening cloak gowns, swathed in embroidered details. The collection is available now at: Giorgio Armani, 37 Sloane Street, Knightsbridge, SW1X 9LP and at www.armani.com

FEARNE COTTON:
MY MAKE-UP For the presenter and author, beauty products have got to be ethical and easy to use. Words: Katie Wright
92 APRIL 2020
I
t’s clear from the way she recalls the unexpected arrival of a box of Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks, that Fearne Cotton is a true make-up lover. “She actually sent me this box of about 20 lipsticks - it was one of the most exciting days of mine and my daughter’s lives. “We were just like, ‘Oh my god, what are we going to do? This is insane.’ We were both playing around with them for hours.” What was the TV presenter’s favourite shade from the glamorous glut? “I’ve got one in my bag right now, what’s it called?” she says, rummaging to retrieve the brick-red lippie encased in a shiny rose gold tube. “This one is called Viva La Vergara. It’s a darker colour, I wouldn’t normally wear this colour, but I’ve been really liking it recently.” “And I mean, who doesn’t like Charlotte Tilbury’s eyeshadow quads? They’re amazing,” she continues, warming to her theme. The 38-year-old, whose main focus now is her Happy Place podcast, as well as being mum to kids Rex, 6, and Honey, 4, is also a cookbook author - her most recent, Happy Vegan, is entirely plant-based, so it’s no surprise to learn she has a preference for ethical cosmetics brands. “I like Burt’s Bees [the brand is cruelty-free and doesn’t test on animals],” she notes. “I like their cream
MUST-HAVES blusher - it’s like a stick - and their foundation.” She says organic brand INIKA is another go-to, citing the powder and eyeliner as favourites. All this enthusiasm might lead you to believe Cotton loves nothing more than relaxing with some #skincaresunday ‘me’ time. “God no. Absolutely not,” she laughs. “I’m not gonna lie. I’ve got a million things I would rather do than have a facial, or even pampering myself. “Occasionally, like once every two weeks, I might have five minutes to put a quick face mask on whilst the kids are killing each other in the bath and screaming the house down. “But other than that, I don’t have a routine. I just take my make-up off with micellar water, or whatever cleanser I’ve got at home, and put moisturiser on. That’s it.” The only indulgence the busy mum does sometimes allow herself is a soak in the tub. “I do love having a bath, don’t get me wrong. But I see that as very different from having a skincare routine. “For me, being in the bath is all about chilling the hell out and transitioning from a hectic day to, ‘I’m going to bed soon’. “So I love getting in the bath, maybe adding a bath bomb, maybe some oil, you know, nice smelling stuff, to calm me down, and reading a book - that, for me, is heaven.”

This Nineties favourite is back in fashion and it’s all about attaining a glamorous shine, says Prudence Wade.
GET THE L ip gloss is one of those items that can take you straight back to the Nineties - a time when all the make-up know-how you needed was the ability to apply a slick of sticky, glittery, berry-flavoured gloss to your mouth. And now it’s back - and luckily, it’s had an adult update. One of the best things about lip gloss is just how easy it is to use. Unlike some of the more complicated beauty trends of the moment - looking at you contouring - all you have to do is swish it on your lips in a vaguely neat way. So here are some of the lip gloss trends ruling the high street and the catwalks at the moment. And don’t worry, formulas have moved on since the 1990s - you shouldn’t have your hair sticking to your lips quite so often...
Pale and interesting Two decades ago, the idea of lip gloss giving you a ‘no make-up make-up’ look would have been practically inconceivable. Now, it’s very much on trend. Instead of 94 APRIL 2020
going for a crazy colour or sticky finish, opt for a shade that suits your lip colour and gives it a softer, natural look. Depending on your skintone, gentle rosy pinks and peach colours work well, making your lips look polished and dewy - like you’ve just rolled out of bed, in a good way. The key to this look - and when applying any lip gloss - is preparation. “Ensure your lips are well prepped by using an exfoliator first to get rid of any dryness,” explains Sascha Jackson, lead make-up artist at Stila UK. “If you are using a nude or semi-transparent gloss, I recommend using a lip liner close to your natural lip colour just to create shape.”
Glass lips Once you’ve mastered paler shades, you’ll be ready to graduate to a glass finish; a lip gloss with an extra-shiny, almost mirror-like look to it. “This is a slightly wet look all over, which gives a healthy and youthful appearance,” explains make-up
GLOSS artist Stacey Whittaker. “This particular look is popular on catwalks and creates an editorial feel. My top tip for applying gloss is that a little goes a long way,” she adds. “Apply a small amount to the centre of your lips and use your finger to carefully blend this towards the outer corners.” With an ultra-glossy lip, it can be hard to know what to do with the rest of your make-up. “I like to team this with a glossy or creamy finish on the cheeks, but then a matte or suede eye,” notes Jackson. “The difference in textures really complement each other.”
Plump it up If you’re not keen on injectables or other enhancements, there are plenty of products on the market that offer a non-surgical plump-up - all you have to do is swipe on some lippy. In fact, the phrase ‘plumping lip gloss’ has seen a 45% increase in searches on Pinterest from October 2018 to October 2019. These kinds of lip glosses tend to include tingle-inducing hyaluronic acid,
a beloved skincare ingredient often used to help with hydration - and better hydrated lips can mean a bouncier, fuller pout. Jackson is a particular fan of Stila Beauty Boss Lip Gloss, saying: “It’s enriched with hyaluronic filling spheres which naturally smooth and give a more plump appearance. The pigments are incredible, which means you don’t have to layer lipstick underneath to get a good colour.”
Lady in red A bold red lip is a classic look, and one most of us apply with lipstick. But what about trying that red lip with gloss? You might find it’s easier to apply and lasts longer. Either opt for an already shiny red lip gloss, or use any red you have and layer a clear product on top. “For the festive season, adding a soft sheen gloss over a pop of coloured lipstick is bang on trend for Christmas 2019,” says Whittaker. “Opting for a soft sheen will add dimension to your lips and create a plump and full effect.” APRIL 2020 95

This season’s
BEAUTY TRENDS
96 APRIL 2020
Luckily, you don’t need to be a professional make-up artist to recreate these looks at home. Words: Prudence Wade
A
new season means new beauty trends inspired by the spring/ summer 2020 catwalks. There really is something for everyone; if you like to experiment you can play around with neon eyeshadow, or if skincare is more your thing, there’s the trend for overly dewy skin. An interesting feature of all the trends this season is how imprecise they are. Instead of hyper-complicated, pristine looks, backstage make-up artists were purposefully haphazard, giving off the impression of laid-back cool. This is a bonus for those among us who aren’t professionals, meaning you don’t need a steady hand to nail these looks.
If you want to shake up your beauty routine as we head into spring, these are the trends to try... Kohl eyes Good news for anyone who still sleeps in their make-up, because the smudgy, imprecise look is bang on trend. Models at Ashish and Simone Rocha shunned the perfect cat-eye for something with much more of a rock chick vibe. Eyes were heavily ringed with dark kohl - the messier the better. We know these looks were created by an army of make-up artists backstage, but it’s the kind of thing you can easily recreate at home. You don’t even need a hugely complicated palette or extensive make-up collection, because all it requires is a trusty black eyeliner pencil.
Neon eyeshadow This is exactly the kind of beauty trend you’d expect to come out of spring/summer shows: bright, sunny and festival-ready. Everyone from House of Holland to Pam Hogg modelled some kind of neon eyeshadow, bringing rave culture to the catwalk. Splashes of glitter elevate the neon, and once again, you can be as reckless as you like with application - no need to worry about perfection.
Dark lips This is one of the more surprising of beauty trends to come off the catwalk. While spring/summer is typically seen as a time for bright make-up,
labels like MaxMara and Rick Owens subverted expectations by choosing dark berry lipsticks. These are the kind of colours we’re more used to seeing in autumn, but they look particularly striking paired with a frothy white dress.
Brushed up brows The Instagram trend for brushed-up brows has made its way into high fashion, with Matty Bovan, Mugler and Proenza Schouler all adopting the style. This is a reaction to the pristine, thick, dark brows which have dominated social media for the past few years. It’s good news for anyone who can’t be bothered to perfectly sculpt their eyebrows - all you have to do is brush them up, without worrying about neatness. The trend also suits those who aren’t naturally blessed with full brows, because it actually looks better if you can see the individual hairs.
Glowy skin Looking fresh-faced isn’t a new trend, but this season, the catwalks took it one step further. While you’re still encouraged to have a solid skincare routine, designers like Victoria Beckham and Preen are encouraging you to add that extra pop with artfully placed highlighter. This is a tricky one to nail, because you want a dewy, shiny feel without seeming too oily, but there are plenty of products which can help you look catwalk ready. It’s basically the new version of the ‘no make-up make-up’, but with a bit more edge.
Geometric accents If you’re the kind of person who likes to experiment with make-up, the trend for geometric accents is for you. Models at Victoria Beckham, Matty Bovan and Molly Goddard all featured thin, unusual lines drawn around the models’ eyes. You can commit as much as you like to this trend. If you’re not one for bold make-up, why not draw on a longer, thinner cat-eye than you normally do, like at Jeremy Scott. If you’re looking for something more impactful, draw spiky shapes around your eyes, as seen in Matty Bovan’s show. The key to nailing the look is opting for accents in thin, black lines. We don’t recommend combining this with the trend for heavy kohl eyes, but luckily, you can use the same eyeliner pencil for both looks.

Come and visit our expert team of aesthetic doctors who will be able to guide you through all your options to help you look and feel your best.
Heavy Brows & Frown lines Botulinum Toxin (Botox) together with expert placement of dermal fillers such as Restylane or Ellansé can elevate the brow providing a natural rested look. Botox lasts about 3-4 months whereas dermal fillers last about 9-12 months. Ellansé can last 2 years. It is also possible to create some lift with Ultherapy which uses ultrasound to heat and tighten the underlying brow tissue. Ultherapy uses no needles and nothing is injected. Results can last up to a year.
Facial Sagging If your face has started to deflate due to weight loss either caused by age, stress, diet or exercise then advanced use of dermal fillers may be helpful to restore that lost volume. We can use temporary fillers such as Restylane which last about 12-18 months, or collagen stimulating fillers such as Ellansé or Sculptra which can last up to 3 years. It is imperative to identify that there has been some volume loss and not just inject fillers to create a pseudo-lift as so many lesser experienced injectors are taught these days. To minimise the risk of bruising and complications, cannulae (blunt ended needles) are used because they are less likely to accidentally puncture blood vessels. Needless to say, detailed knowledge of the facial anatomy is essential which takes years of study. Tear troughs, hollow temples, hollow cheeks and nose to mouth lines generally need to be considered at the same time in order to create a natural and balanced and fresher appearance, rather than treating single areas which often produces the “done” look!

Personal Shopping Service at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour

W
ith 120 design showrooms and 600 individual brands to navigate, Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour is an invaluable resource for anyone looking to renovate or redecorate their home. Equally, though, the sheer choice of what’s on offer can be daunting. Enter the Design Centre’s friendly Personal Shopping Service: run by Gabrielle Grubanovich, it provides a link between homeowners and the showrooms, helping to narrow down choices and give advice about what’s on offer, from the latest fabrics and wallpapers to kitchens and bathrooms. Here, Gabrielle explains how her team helps homeowners unlock an incredible world of design.
How does the Personal Shopping Service work? Our Personal Shopping team help guide our design-savvy clientele in making the most informed choices to suit their requirements. I work with clients who need some help navigating around the Design Centre, whether they’re choosing fabrics for a new sofa or looking for a new dining table, lighting or flooring. Sometimes they know what they want, but often they are looking for a pointer in the right direction. I can also guide them on to a path that they wouldn’t have thought of going down. It’s a complimentary service, and there’s no minimum spend. There is a misconception that the Design Centre is trade only, or that you need a trade account to be able to buy something. While that’s true of some of our showrooms, if you work with the Personal Shopping Service you can make a purchase from anywhere here.
Is it in-person only, or can you be my personal shopper from afar? You can call or email to discuss your project, or book an appointment in person. If you can’t come to the Design
Centre, we also work successfully with many clients over the phone. We can send images via email and send samples in the post, free of charge.
Can I commission something from scratch?
THE DETAILS If you’d like further information about the Design Centre or the Personal Shopping Service, please contact Gabrielle at gabrielle.grubanovich@dcch.co.uk or call on 020 72259180 or visit www.dcch.co.uk
There is so much talent within the Design Centre that many showrooms are more than happy to design bespoke items, from furniture to textiles. I recently worked with a fabulous couple from Switzerland who loved a particular fabric, but one of the colours didn’t work with their scheme, so we worked together with the showroom to have it recoloured.
How do you keep up to speed with all the thousands of products? I spend a lot of time in the showrooms and talking to showroom managers, seeing their new collections and working with people who are passionate about what they create!
What do you love about your job? I feel like I am at the forefront of a really incredible industry, and I love how international it is here – we have brands from all over the world. And, of course, I love meeting clients, who also come from all over the world: one day I can be working with a client on their country rectory in the Home Counties, and the next I can be working with someone in Doha sourcing furniture for their majlis. It’s wonderful that they are always appreciative and recommend the service highly.

Faded Glamour It’s all about ‘faded glamour’ for Pearl Lowe and her designer friends. Gabrielle Fagan finds out how to get the look.
114 APRIL 2020
S
inger-turned-fashion designer Pearl Lowe is renowned for her quirky, individual style - so it’s probably no surprise that she defiantly dances to her own tune when it comes to her decor choices too. Her home - a rambling 11-bedroom Georgian mansion in Somerset - showcases her trademark blend of grand, romantic chic and cool rock ‘n roll. “Many people might regard my style as quite ‘eclectic’,” observes London-born Lowe. “That’s fine by me, because I don’t believe there should be any rules - unless you want your house to be a hotel,” the 49-year-old declares with a smile. She sums up her interior style as “faded glamour” - and this is also the title of her new book, which celebrates her approach to decor and creating spaces she loves. Faded Glamour gives us a glimpse into not only Lowe’s own home, but also the private spaces of
her super-creative designer friends, including Solange Azagury-Partridge, Alice Temperley and Sera Hersham Loftus. There are colourful living rooms, intimate bedrooms, and plush bathrooms which showcase the many different ways ‘faded glamour’ can be interpreted - from urban to rustic, and bohemian to vintage. “I’d say it’s a gloriously decadent yet well-lived-in decorating style. I think of rooms that are elegant yet whimsical at the same time,” muses Lowe. She shares her own home with her musician husband, Danny Goffey (of the Nineties band Supergrass), and their children Alfie, 23, Frankie 20, and Betty, 15. Her daughter, model Daisy, 31, is a regular visitor too. Throughout the property, Lowe has managed to deftly mix precious pieces of antique furniture with contemporary colourful pieces from flea markets, which happily sit alongside 18th century mahogany wood and 1950s plastic retro. Wear-and-tear and the patina of age aren’t hidden. Instead, they’re revered and deliberately embraced. “To me, an object that was once the height of elegance but is now a bit battered has far more allure than

something brand new,” says Lowe. “What I enjoy is the mix, the alchemy you create when you play around with styles... where chintz sits alongside animal print and sultry velvets; rococo suddenly goes a little rock ‘n roll, and a freestanding 1970s Anglepoise lamp sets it all alight.” As a designer, she draws inspiration from many quarters: art, film, photography, music, travel and - above all - her friends, especially Rachel Ashwell, the designer and writer who introduced us all to ‘shabby chic’ back in the Nineties. Ashwell, says Lowe, “taught me how to create spaces that are not just decadent and stylish, but deliciously inviting and alluringly comfortable”. Here, we take a sneak peek at some of the homes bringing ‘faded glamour’ to life...
116 APRIL 2020
Colourful Faded Glamour Solange Azagury-Partridge This interior literally “sets your spirit soaring”, enthuses Lowe. This is a home where sofas and chairs are covered in a giddy array of colourful fabrics and throws, and who’s style takes influences from the East. It’s a harmony of surprising contrasts - a sofa in a Sanderson flowery chintz sits alongside one dressed in an Ikat print, while yellow velvet clashes with shocking pink toile de Jouy wallpaper, and mismatched Moroccan rugs form a rainbow patchwork across the floors. Fabric used for walls adds to a sense of warmth as well as enriching the palette of shades, while the woodwork is painted baby pink. “Solange’s bold use of colour is full of wit and wonder and brings a smile to your face,” says Lowe.
Jewels for the home Alice Temperley Award-winning fashion designer Temperley, who dresses some of the most stylish women in the world - from the

Fashion a glamorous home Sera Hersham-Loftus
Fashion and interior designer Hersham-Loftus has banished walls from her London apartment, and transformed it into a giant living space simply divided into areas by beautiful panels of fabric.
Hand-made muslin curtains - appliqued with vintage lace and hand-dyed - hang over windows, and ceilings are painted black. She’s furnished with day-beds, antique furniture and a jungle of vast potted plants throughout, which conceal subtle lighting effects. The designer’s style, says Lowe, is ever evolving, and “sumptuous, seductive, exotic, and highly unique”.

Top home security tips Front Doors
Obstructions
The most vulnerable part of your property. More secure doors are thicker than original Victorian or later period doors - 65mm - therefore adding more timber and increasing the strength of the door dramatically. Use Banham mortice locks and always two deadlocks. Make sure these are locked when the property is empty and at night, engage at least one of these locks. If someone breaks in they cannot exit the front door. Video doorbells and spy hole cameras Great new products are on the market, replacing intercoms and the old spy hole with Wifi video cameras that can alert you to motion straight to your mobile. Check out Ring.com.
Make sure there is no hiding place, such as a high hedge at the front of your property where someone has time to break in. Gravel is also a good old-fashioned deterrent! Cameras Ring.com and Nest have affordable stick up cameras that can pick up motion and record it. You can’t have enough of them! Fixed recordable cameras are an upgrade on this. Alarm system If all else fails!
Double Glazing Breaking a double-glazed window is hard work and more avoided by burglars these days as there is a higher chance of DNA being caught on the glazing materials. Glass type Toughened glass is essential for front door glazed panels at the very least. Stained glass can be replicated within a double-glazed unit. Consider laminated glass for more vulnerable locations, such as rear and side positions of a property. Laminated glass does not shatter, rather like a car windscreen.
Window Locks and Hinges Sashes should all have dead bolts (see bottom image), ideally in two positions, with lockable catches. Similarly handles and stays should all be lockable on casement windows. Door locks French and folding doors should all have multi-point locks, usually operated with a single handle. 118 APRIL 2020

t’s no secret that the world of work is changing. With the rise of co-working and freelancing, it’s now possible to get down to business in just about any location. And yet if we’ve learnt anything from the sterile interiors of the early 90s, it’s that environment matters. Recent studies suggest that a well-designed space can lead to significant boosts in productivity and cognitive function — quantitative evidence of the “feel-good” factor of great design. With 50% of the UK now working remotely at least once a week, creating a functional home office has become an essential task if we wish to maintain boundaries between work and play. Here at Chaplins, we’ve been giving it some thought and have come up with our Home Office Style Guide to help you get it right first time.
Plan Like An Executive When designing your home office, it’s good to take some time to visualise how everything will work together. Don’t forget to incorporate some sort of breakout zone — a space in which to think or read when you’re not obliged to be sat behind a keyboard. In smaller offices, this could be as simple as a generous pouf. In larger homes, a small sofa, armchair 124 APRIL 2020

or (if you’re feeling particularly psychoanalytic) chaise lounge. Incorporating these elements ensures your office is a space you’ll actually enjoy spending time in, while accommodating for both active and passive work.
Are You Sitting Comfortably? While the majority of offices are characterised by orthopaedic-looking chairs, designers have a long history of producing statement styles. Some of the best date back to the mid-century, including iconic collections such as the Eames Aluminium Range and Knoll’s Executive Saarinen collection. Both offer top-notch ergonomics and a timeless design language to boot. Sustainable design lovers might also want to consider Vitra’s N02 Recycled Office Chair — crafted entirely from circular polypropylene and recycled aluminium.
Lightweight and compact, it’s a great choice for those who are short on space.
No More Boring Desk Jobs A great desk is the backbone of any contemporary home office. And whether small or stately, there are a variety of exciting options. For homes in which every square inch counts, look for compact desks with clean lines, hidden storage and handy charging points. In order to maximise the available floor space, opt for a chair with a lithe base like Gubi’s Beetle Swivel Chair. If space isn’t an issue, you can experiment with bold sweeping desks such as Zanotta’s Cavour or Cattelan Italia’s Wall Street — each offering a real interior power play. Where you position your desk is equally important. If your home office benefits from lots of direct sunlight, be sure to orient your desk so that any screens aren’t out of action for portions of the day. Experimenting with layout can also affect how you experience your space. Try to avoid being cramped up against walls where possible. One option is to float your desk in the centre of the room, creating a focal point that will compel you to sit down and get things done.
to work. Before diving in, it’s wise to think about how accessible the documents that need storing will need to be. If they are items that you refer to constantly, then some linear shelving might be preferable to under-desk units or sideboards. One of the most flexible options available is USM’S Haller system. Modular in nature, it can be added to or subtracted from in accordance to your needs, making it ideal for homes of all sizes. Need some additional help planning your contemporary home office? Be sure to make an appointment with our friendly design team and take advantage of our INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICE at Chaplins. 477-507 Uxbridge Road, HA5 4JS www.chaplins.co.uk 020 8421 1179
“A great desk is the backbone of any contemporary home office”
Make Light Work of Your Daily Tasks Modern task lighting is another must for any productive home office. As well as allowing you to work into the evening, it’ll help create a snug and inviting atmosphere – the perfect place to ponder all those frustrated souls on their morning commute. If your work involves sketching, drawing or examining projects, you’ll want to opt for a versatile lamp that allows you to shape and direct the light. Artemide’s Tolomeo and Flos’ Kelvin collections are particularly revered in this regard. For laptop-based work, any lamp that provides a soft gush of down-ward illumination will do the trick. If you don’t quite have room for a table lamp on your desk, consider experimenting with some strategically hung pendant lights. We love Louis Poulsen’s PH 5 and Doo-Wop Collections for office spaces.

hen I first got involved in the security door and window industry, I thought I knew at least a bit about doors and windows, having used them all my life. As it turned out, I had a bit of an eye-opener when it came to the ease and speed with which criminals can gain entry to a property through various types of locks and doors. Everything I saw from lock picking to purely just kicking down the door made me realise that my front door had given me a false sense of security all this time. Affluent counties have reported year-on-year increases in burglaries during the latest release of annual crime stats and there are currently neighbourhoods in London where we’re helping to combat burglaries from mopeds crashing through front doors. There’s never any harm in being proactive and taking precautions to ensure your family and possessions are protected. A high quality security door can do so much more than just keep intruders (not to mention wind, fire, water, cold and noise) out. It can improve a property’s aesthetic, raise its value and decrease the cost of insurance. We’re starting to see a trend where new builds and refurbishments are including an element of panic rooms, security doors or security windows as standard. When you’re designing a property, you need to be able to personalise the security aspects so they fit seamlessly into the overall look and feel, without detracting from it. Our bespoke design service and ability to literally incorporate any door furniture into the manufactured product, gives you all the flexibility you’ll ever need.
Why Magnificent Security? • Truly bespoke - freedom of choice regarding design, materials, colour, finishes and features. • Security - incredibly durable panic rooms, security doors and security windows with bulletproof or triple126 APRIL 2020

of it is Chinese or Siberian so you are assured of its source and quality. The ‘Core” (the important bit) is constructed of single species Plantation Hevea (Rubberwood). It doesn’t grow naturally in South East Asia so is farmed for this purpose. As the Hevea tree nears the end of its rubber producing life it is felled and immediately replaced with a younger sapling that not only uses up more harmful CO2 but also produces more rubber. The Hevea used for the core of all our wood flooring has a density similar to Oak giving our floors unsurpassed stability in all different climates and
environments. Hevea will always outperform any plywood or softwood cored material found in so many cheaper alternative wood floors. The back layer construction is also a locally grown plantation pine species, which again adds to the already excellent stability of our flooring. The vast majority of our wood flooring has undergone some degree of hand finishing ensuring a consistent high quality, high performance wood floor. This hand finishing gives each of our floors a ‘bespoke’ feel. Our ‘Antique’ finished floors all feature textures and surfaces produced entirely by hand rather than automation that gives each style a unique feel in terms of grain and colour. All of our Oak floors are treated with the specifically designed Extreme Matt Oil. Using German technology from Klump Coatings in Stuttgart these oils, as long as the floor is kept clean during installation and undergoes some form of regular basic domestic cleaning, will require no further applications throughout the floors life. Our own range of Porcelain is given the same level of commitment in its design and manufacture as our wood, reflecting our commitment to bringing our customers the best possible products available.
