THE GAUCHO INTERNATIONAL POLO
O
n 21st March 2012 Gaucho will host The Gaucho International Polo at London’s O2 arena, uniting high-octane polo interspersed with live world famous music to produce a unique event never seen before in Britain. Following the triumphant inaugural year in 2011, Gaucho International Polo has now evolved into the ultimate celebration of Argentina’s sporting and cultural heritage at the O2 arena. The 2012 event will consist of two international arena polo matches merged with exclusive performances from Grammy award winning band, Bajofondo. Bajofondo, who have put ‘electrotango’ firmly on the world music map will open and play throughout the tournament, creating a thrilling blend of polo and performances. The matches will see Scotland taking on Ireland and culminate in the titanic clash between IG Index’s England and Argentina, pitting Britain’s finest player, Jamie Morrison 10 m a r c h 2 0 1 2
against the Royals’ favourite star, Nacho Figueras. The Gaucho International Polo will be a true Argentine festival, with tastings from some of the country’s finest wine producers, brought to the event by leading authority, Wines of Argentina. There will also be a fun and charitable twist to the event in the form of “The White Jeans Party’. What to wear to polo matches has often been hotly debated amongst the style conscious, but white jeans are winning in the fashion stakes with enthusiasts such as Prince Harry donning them at matches around the world. In keeping with this, every guest who arrives at the event wearing a pair, a pound will be donated to the BFF (British Forces Foundation). Arena polo is an emerging trend in the polo world and takes place on a smaller pitch with only three players per team rather than the usual four, creating a fast-paced and spectator friendly game. With simpler rules and tickets starting at just £20, it is an accessible way of introducing
Londoners to Argentina’s most celebrated sporting tradition. Combining the best in Argentine food and wine with the sophisticated glamour of Buenos Aires, Gaucho is now not only the ultimate dining destination but an established ambassador for Argentine culture and sport. Gaucho’s UK Operations Director, Martin Williams sums it: “Gaucho are delighted to be working with the HPA to create an annual International Polo match at the O2- I hope that it will grow to rival the success of the former ‘HPA Cartier International Polo’. This year we have created what promises to be an amazing Gaucho Polo Party: The Argentine wine tasting lounge and Bajofondo concert are included in the event and all tickets, while the ‘White Jeans’ charity theme and after-parties will keep the event casual and a lot of fun.” 21st March 2012, Doors open 5.30pm Polo matches start 7.15pm with live performances from Bajofondo throughout Afterparty starts 9.45pm Tickets from £20, through Ticketmaster W: www.gauchopolo.com F: www.facebook.com/Gauchointernationalpolo

A Royal
Tea Party
at Fortnum & Mason, Piccadilly
I
t was a ladies’s day out for Kate, the Queen and Duchess of Cornwall on an official visit to Fortnum & Mason to mark the store’s renovated restaurant - which has been renamed The Diamond Jubilee Tea Station to mark the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. Laughing and smiling, the visit to the London foodie haven, was as cheerful and relaxed as a royal engagement ever gets. The Queen looked simply delighted to be accompanied for the first time by the two women who will, one day, follow in her footsteps. Arriving in the capital’s bustling Piccadilly, the three ladies were greeted by cheering well-wishers and the jolly sounds of a jazz band. As they entered the department store, which was founded in 1707 and boasts more than three centuries of royal service, they viewed a display of Diamond Jubilee United Services Tins filled with tea, and clotted cream ‘super digestives’ which are sent to 18,000 members of the armed forces to mark the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. The store has been supporting the British military since the Napoleonic Wars, sending parcels filled with comforts from home to its troops. The Queen examined the
14 m a r c h 2 0 1 2
tins with great care. ‘They are very robust, aren’t they?’ she said, and then, spotting the industrial-strength Queen Anne tea contained within joked: ‘Yes, they do like the stronger stuff, don’t they.’ She appeared particularly animated as she viewed the range and laughed as she handled a tin of biscuits that played the national anthem. ‘Oh how splendid,’ she remarked. On being congratulated by a member of staff about her jubilee, she replied: ‘Yes, it is coming round rather quickly, isn’t it?’ Kate and Camilla
appeared at the confectionery stand which was piled high with inviting chocolates and upon which a small ‘tasting tray’ of sweets. Camilla was most chatty, asking the staff: ‘So where did you learn the art of chocolate making? Do you still dip your fingers in and have a taste? Some people say they go off it after a while if they work with it.’ Staff confirmed that they had been told only to lay out samples of non-chocolaty goodies in case they melted on the royal visitors in front of the cameras. The two ladies then re-joined the Queen for a taste of high tea -
albeit at 10.30am. More than 150 people, including former members of staff, had been invited to the tea party after which the Queen renamed the store’s restaurant the Diamond Jubilee Tea Station. They were also presented with Fortnum’s hamper, containing champagne truffles and ‘hearty treats for happy hounds’ - the Queen’s corgis, Camilla’s rescued Jack Russell and Kate’s new cocker spaniel, Lupo. Afterwards London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson, revealed that the Queen had chatted about the success of his ‘pay and ride’ bicycle scheme. He also said that Kate had thanked him for her wedding present - a tandem ‘Boris Bike’ - which she and William and have been riding around their garden.’They haven’t taken to the streets yet but have been practising in confined spaces,’ he said. A source confirmed that the royal couple have been known to ‘play on it in the garden’. This was the first time that the Queen and the two next Queen consorts have been on an official ‘working’ engagement together. Kate will also join the Queen in Leicester for a royal ‘away day’ while her husband is still on deployment with the RAF in the Falklands.

he ultimate cruise - for £1million per couple. The world’s most expensive cruise trip has been unveiled - and it comes with a rather large price tag of £1million per couple. The mammoth cruise departs in Los Angeles and includes visits to 28 countries including French Polynesia, New Zealand, Malaysia, the Maldives and Mauritius. Six Star Cruises’ trip of a lifetime lasts 124 days and comes complete with VIP transportation and stays in the world’s most opulent hotels. The luxury starts from the moment you leave home, with a helicopter picking you up and whisking you off to a UK airport. As you fly, you will enjoy £4,000-per-kilo Beluga Caviar, Dom Perignon Rosi champagne and Da Hong Pao tea, which is harvested from plants that are 1,000 years old and cost £2,000 per kilo. Next comes a private jet to take you to Los Angeles. En route, a Michelin-starred chef will cook up a tencourse taster menu. Once you touch down in LA, a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce Phantom will be waiting to

transport you to the ship. Accommodation includes the Royal Suite, with two 1,000 sq ft bedrooms, marbled bathrooms and spacious verandas. The epic trip takes in 28 countries including New Zealand, Malaysia and Mauritius, and works out at approximately £8,000 a day. The package includes a four night pre-cruise stay at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and a four night post-cruise stay in a £7,300-a-night apartment (complete with rooftop Jacuzzi, cinema and butler) located in a gated community on Sunset Island, Miami. The ship sets sail on 14th January 2013. So far Six Star Cruises has not revealed whether there are any bookings so far for the millionaires’ holiday. Mal Barritt, company director, said it was “likely to be the most expensive cruise ever sold.” “We have listened to what some of our most discerning customers say they look for in a holiday and have created the most desirable cruise holiday in the world,” he said. “This is truly a cruise that will never be forgotten.” www.sixstarcruises.co.uk

Baggage restrictions, charges to check in, a fight to get seats together – it’s not the perfect start to a getaway! The simple solution this Easter is to put exactly what you want in your own car, and head to Portsmouth International Port. The Hindhead Tunnel makes the journey even quicker and easier than ever before – a gentle cruise down the A3 to Britain’s best connected Port.

talian shoemaker to pay highest ever UK retail rent on Bond Street Italian luxury shoemaker Salvatore Ferragamo is agreeing a deal to pay a record £1059 per sq ft UK rent at its Bond Street store. This will break the £1,000 per square foot mark for the first time, a source familiar with the deal told Reuters. The deal would also break the previous record of £965 per square foot for the valuable Zone A front section of a store set by jeweller Piaget on the same glitzy central London shopping strip in December 2009. Under the deal between landlord NFU Mutual

pension fund and Ferragamo, the retailer will extend its lease and increase its rent from £600 to £1059 per square foot at 24 Old Bond Street as part of a plan to expand its retail space, the source said. Bond Street rents far exceed other central London shopping streets. Rents on the second most expensive strip of Oxford Street are on average £200 per square foot lower and Marylebone High Street peaks at about £225. NFU declined to comment. Ferragamo was not immediately available to comment. Fierce competition for space on Bond Street, the UK’s most expensive shopping stretch and the

second priciest in Europe behind Paris’ Avenue des Champs Elysées, has driven up rents and spurred some deep-pocketed retailers to buy stores in order to guarantee ownership of top sites. Unlike mid-market retailers, luxury brands have bounced back strongly from the depths of the 2008 downturn, helped by strong demand from emerging markets such as China and Russia. The acute space shortage on the half mile stretch combined with strong demand from global brands that see a Bond Street presence as essential to European expansion plans, may boost rents to £1,500 by 2013, consultancy Cushman & Wakefield said.

Kettners
O
riginally a series of four Georgian Townhouses, this landmark venue was originally opened as a restaurant in 1867 by Auguste Kettner, (chef to Napoleon III,) and became infamous as the rendezvous of choice for deliciously colourful characters of the time. Oscar Wilde dined here and Kettner’s is mentioned as his venue of choice in his trial notes, King Edward VII courted his mistress, Lilly Langtree and Agatha Christie and Bing Crosby were celebrated regulars. Gorgeously glamorous, Kettner’s today boasts a Brasserie, Cocktail and Champagne Bar and eight Private Rooms. The Grade II listed building has been refurbished and restored and, with a brand new management team, a fresh lease of life has been injected into this legendary Soho venue. Kettner’s elegant 1930’s style Brasserie serves Modern European dishes all day with a range of menus to suit all occasions. Head Chef Winston Matthews has taken inspiration from Auguste Kettner’s ‘Book of the Table’ a comprehensive cookery manual published in 1877, the ‘tart’ selection being a perfect example of this. The savoury ‘tart of the day’ is a signature dish (£6.50 / £9.00) and sweet tarts are also made daily for the sumptuous selection of desserts. Other French inspired dishes include ‘Duck Confit’ with spinach and saladaise potatoes (£14.50) the classic ‘Coq Au Vin’ with smoked bacon, baby carrots and parsley mash (£14.50) and ‘Beef Bourguignon’ served in a traditional copper pot and slow cooked for four hours. (£16.50) Being in the centre of Soho Kettner’s also offers great comfort food style dishes such as the ‘Home made fishcakes’ with pease pudding and shrimp butter (£13.00) and the classic ‘Kettner’s Burger’ (£13.50.) Situated in the heart of theatre land between the bustling Old Compton Street and Shaftesbury Avenue, Kettner’s is the perfect choice for theatre dining. The Set Menu is available at lunch and pre and post theatre, priced £16.50 for two courses and £19.50 for three courses. The sympathetic refurbishment has retained the sense of occasion with white bentwood chairs and elegant marble topped tables. At night, the Brasserie positively sparkles with candles and vintage candelabras. Live music from Tuesday to Saturday on the beautiful white grand piano sets the evening ambience. Situated in the heart of Bloomsbury, The Bloomsbury Street Hotel is a stone’s throw from theatre land, Covent Garden, the cultural British museum and bustling Oxford Street. The beautifully designed spaces provide true five-star luxury at four-star prices and without doubt The Bloomsbury Street Hotel makes the ideal location for a London stopover. Dominating the hotel’s reception space is a striking art installation, the perfect backdrop to a team of attentive

T
he 158th Boat Race on 7th April will see oarsmen of six different nationalities competing, as the older, more internationally experienced crew from Oxford take on the younger, heavier Cambridge eight. This year will be the first time for Cambridge and only the second time ever in Boat Race history that the crew will feature only one British oarsman, returning Blue undergraduate Mike Thorp. The only other time this has happened was in 2007 when Oxford President Robin Ejsmond-Frey was the sole Brit in the crew. The rest of the Light Blue crew this year is made up of three Americans, two Australians, and individuals from Germany and New Zealand,; and they will be coxed by British first year

boat racE undergraduate, Ed Bosson. The crew from Oxford will include three former Lightweight rowers, and is made up of five Brits, two Americans, and individuals from Germany and the Netherlands. The Dark Blues will be coxed by Brit Zoe De Toledo. She will be the first woman to cox Oxford since 2000. Four of the athletes competing this year learnt to row at their colleges at Oxford or Cambridge. Alex Woods and Dan Harvey for Oxford, and Alex Ross
and Moritz Schramm for Cambridge all noviced in their first years at the universities. The idea for a rowing race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge came from two friends Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his Harrow school friend Charles Wordsworth (nephew of the poet William Wordsworth), who was at Oxford. On 12 March 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford and thus the tradition was born which has continued to the present day,
where the loser of the previous year’s race challenges the opposition to a re-match. The first Boat Race took place at Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire and contemporary newspapers report crowds of twenty thousand travelled to watch. The race was stopped soon after the start and, following the restart, Oxford were clear winners. Cambridge wore pink, the colour of Lady Margaret Boat Club (of St. Johns College), who their captain and two other crew members rowed for. Oxford have always worn dark blue. The event was such a resounding success that the townspeople later decided to organise a regatta of their own which duly became Henley Royal Regatta. After the first year, the early Boat Races took place at Westminster in London, but by 1845, when
London eventS
Westminster had become too crowded, the Boat Race moved six miles up-stream to the then country village of Putney. In 1856 the race became an annual event (excepting only the war years). The Modern Boat Race still runs along the same lines but has now become a major international sporting occasion drawing millions of viewers from around the world. The Boat Race course is marked by three classic bends, two in favour of the Middlesex station, on the north bank of the Thames, while the third favours the crew drawn on the opposite Surrey station. In spite of these bends the course is theoretically fair - the start and finish lines are exactly parallel, and in the unlikely event of the crews staying level throughout the race, they will both have covered the magic Boat Race distance of exactly 4 miles 374 yards. The start of the race is marked by the University stone, a few hundred yards upstream from Putney Road Bridge and for the first quarter of a mile, as the crews pass the historic boathouses of Putney Embankment. The Finish Line is just a few yards downstream from Chiswick Road bridge and here the crowds on Race Day are as densely packed as those near the Start. What those crowds witness as the crews cross the Line is the ecstasy of the victors and the despair of the losing crew. On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames from Putney to Mortlake to witness the action. Enjoy the festival atmosphere of the Boat Race by watching for free from one of the many vantage points along the course. You should be able to find a place to watch on either side of the river along the full length of the course, but particular areas to note are: Putney Bridge, Putney Embankment and Bishops Park (at the

The course consists of three one-hour lessons with one of the renowned Holland & Holland instructors or three two-hour lessons if shared with a fellow participant. lessons are by appointment Monday to Friday (and some Saturdays) from 1st February to 25th April 2012, concluding on 26th April with a morning’s fun shooting competition followed by lunch and the opportunity to take part in a simulated pheasant drive and rifle shooting.
The future of sporting shooting, as we know it will ultimately rest in the young shots of today. It is the responsibility on all organisations such as ours to ensure the safety and skills of shooting, either in the field or on clay type targets, are passed on to future generations. For many years now, Holland & Holland have been providing youngsters with the opportunity to enjoy shooting and learn how to handle a gun safely, all the while developing a keen sense of responsibility.
The course is designed to be a learning experience as well as good fun, often resulting in lasting friendships with the other ladies.
as well as tuition, which is available throughout the year, we hold Young Shots days during the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays for young guns (aged 9 -16). These are designed not only for those younger shots who may already have some, if limited experience, but also for those who have had no previous shooting experience at all. The aim is to have an educational and fun day with a strong emphasis on safety.
and the cost? Just £280 to include three lessons, cartridges, clays, gun hire and the final competition day with lunch. It really is exceptional value, so why not come and join us. We are sure you will enjoy the experience.
We are holding a Young Shots day on Tuesday 3rd April at our shooting school in northwood. Participants are welcome to bring their own guns but 12G, 20G, 28G & 410G will be available. and the cost? Just £115.

Wharf ’s award winning public art collection. The public can hunt the giant eggs, exclusively designed, bejewelled and decorated by some of the world’s leading artists, architects, jewellers and designers. Creations by eminent names ‘hidden’ across
Canary Wharf ’s parks, plazas and shopping malls include film director Sir Ridley Scott, illustrator Nilesh Mistry, artist Peter Weigl, architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw - and a giant chocolate egg from Charbonnel et Walker. The first event of its kind, ‘The Faberge Big Egg Hunt’
raises funds for charities Action for Children and Elephant Family, and sees 200 eggs dotted around iconic London landmarks. Canary Wharf ’s location as a zone is thanks to the generous donations of Canary Wharf Group, the owner and developer of the famous business and shopping district, BGC Partners, Clifford Chance and Morgan Stanley. Egg hunters heading to Canary Wharf will have to search inside and out - from scenic parks to bustling shopping malls - to find all the eggs. Afterwards, they can enjoy delicious food and stunning views at Plateau restaurant, which has created a mouthwatering dish, ‘Eggs Fabergé’, to celebrate and help to raise further money for the charities - a slow cooked duck egg with a ragout of chanterelles, brioche and duck scratchings. Camille Waxer, Chief Administrative Officer at Canary Wharf Group plc said: ‘The Big Egg Hunt is an excellent charity initiative which gives Londoners an excuse to get out and explore their city. We are pleased to host eggs created by some of the UK’s best creative talent and raise money for some very worthy causes in the process.’ The hand-crafted eggs, which are destined to become highly collectible works of art, will be available to buy at auction, with proceeds going to Action for Children and Elephant Family. The jewel in the crown of the auction will be an exclusively designed, stunning 127ct emerald and gold egg pendant ‘Le Collier Plume d Or’ by Fabergé. ‘The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt’ seeks to raise up to £2 million for leading children’s charity, Action for Children, and Elephant Family - the UK’s biggest funder for the endangered Asian elephant. A Marching Success
for The Royal Marsden Hospitals
A
Sunday afternoon on 11th March saw nearly 4000 weary walkers celebrate as they crossed the finishing posts of The Marsden March - a 14 mile sponsored walk to raise money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Larry Lamb, who was walking for the second year

running, sent the walkers off with a spring in their step as they set off to raise money for the charity. This is the second of The Marsden March - the sponsored walk from The Royal Marsden’s Chelsea site to its Sutton site was developed as a great way for patients,
staff, friends and family to show their support or honour a loved one. Money raised from the Marsden March will help provide the best possible care and treatment for people affected by cancer. Amongst the walkers were several familiar faces. As well as Larry Lamb, marchers were joined by Nathaniel Parker, Nicholas Owen, Richard Fairbrass and Camilla Kerslake all of whom were keen to show their support for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Amanda Heaton, Community Fundraising and Development Manager, from The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, said: “A huge thank you to everyone who gave up their Sunday in aid of the charity. We were overwhelmed with the support we received from walkers, helpers and celebrities. The Marsden March is a very emotive day and so inspiring to see thousands of people of all ages marching between our hospital sites with one clear goal - to walk together to take on cancer. “The Marsden March has grown hugely since its launch last year and we
are delighted that so many people took part again. Early indications are that we are well on our way to meeting our fundraising target once more. You can help The Royal Marsden continue to push the boundaries and raise the standards of excellence. This includes helping scientists searching for cures, doctors who depend on the latest cancer treatments and technologies, nursing students looking for the best in clinical education, and of course, patients and their families who are at the heart of everything they do. For more information about The Marsden March visit www.royalmarsden. org/march or email marsdenmarch@royalmarsden.org for more information. The Marsden March 2013:

four-day festival that will include film screenings, live music performances, discussions, panels and other public cultural programming will be held at The O2, London. Robert Redford and musician, songwriter, and soundtrack and record producer and 12-time Grammy Award winner T Bone Burnett, will open the festival on 26th April with an on-stage discussion about the relationship between film and music, sharing their recollections of achieving great musical moments with the many filmmakers, actors and musicians they’ve collaborated with throughout their storied careers. Joined on stage by Nick Hornby (High Fidelity),
who will moderate the evening, the two artists of ‘sound and screen’ will utilise film clips from some of the many films they’ve worked on for which music made an indelible contribution. Redford and Burnett will also discuss some of their favourite musical moments from other great films that have influenced their work. The evening will be capped off by a special musical guest. Burnett’s 40 years of experience in music and entertainment include work as an artist, songwriter, producer, performer, concert producer, record company owner and artist advocate. Sundance London will feature fourteen UK premieres of films fresh from the 2012 Sundance Film
Festival which took place January in Park City, Utah. Daily live music performances, discussions, panels and other public events will round out the four-day festival. Robert Redford, Founder and President of Sundance Institute, said: “The depth of T Bone’s experience and accomplishments in the worlds of both film and music set the stage for the Sundance London program and the celebration of music and film

His ability to deepen the experience of watching a film through the addition of music has seen him produce and curate some of cinema’s most notable and commercially successful soundtracks.” T Bone Burnett added: “I’ve admired immensely the work that Robert Redford and Sundance Institute have done over the years to support independent film and filmmakers. I’m very much looking forward to Bob and I sharing our experiences of the films we’ve been a part of, as well as our recollections of the varied musicians, actors and filmmakers we’ve had the good fortune to work with over the years.” Programme information and ticket packages now on sale at www.sundance-london.com aBouT sundanCE insTiTuTE

Katty McMurray at the Ingo Fincke Gallery Katty McMurray has built up a loyal following since graduating from The Chelsea School of Art in 1991. Over the past two decades she has continued to have sell out exhibitions in London and around the country, her forthcoming show at the Ingo Fincke Gallery (April 2012) with new paintings of London, alongside her classic scenes of Devon and Cornwall, looks to be no exception. Her work is exhibited regularly in London and around the country but the Ingo Fincke Gallery is particularly close to her heart – they offered her, her first show in 1992 straight after leaving Chelsea… it was a storming success and sold out in a matter of hours! Since then she has gone from strength to strength and is now exhibited widely at all the major London Art Fairs and leading London galleries. Her relationship with the Ingo Fincke gallery has always been professional, but also a personal one, and this year Katty married Ben Fincke! They have two children, Ingo and Otto Fincke. The Ingo Fincke Gallery was established in 1959 by Ingo, Ben and Kira’s father, who turned it from a run down antiques shop into a small picture framers. Over the last 20 years, Ben and Kira have turned it into a highly successful and beautiful, gallery and framers, and are now the longest running business in Battersea and have recently celebrated their 50th anniversary! Picture framing and galleries have featured strongly in Katty’s life as her father had a gallery and framers in Victoria, London. Ten years ago she opened her own gallery under the arches on Brighton Seafront….the ‘Two Kats and a Cow ’ this is now the longest running gallery in Brighton. Katty’s collectors enjoy the quiet naivety of her paintings. Her landscapes and seascapes are deceptively simple and serenely evocative. Cool blue-greys and earthy shades infuse her work with dashes of red. Her work is always calming - never shocking, and highly collectable. Katty has enjoyed some high profile commissions including Great Ormond Street, (18 paintings purchased for their patients hotel) and The Hoxton Hotel, (commissioned drawings of London landmarks which were reproduced over 200 times throughout the hotel and a 15 metre panoramic of London which was put onto the glass reception area) Her handmade screen prints are published through Artizan Editions. Alongside her paintings, Katty is known for her simple line drawings. These are often drawn with a continuous line and have appeared in, Country Living, The Independent and Coast Magazine amongst others. Katty will be exhibiting at the Ingo Fincke Gallery (www.ingofincke.com) from the 16-28th April. For a catalogue, please email kira@ingofincke.com or call her on 020 7228 7966 or 07966 276004.

he vibrant and internationally renowned London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. A constantly buzzing key event for those who haven’t got the patience to wait until the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into the fashion magazines. The magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers’ and fashion stylists’ cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. The allure of the show is exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe. It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. The world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winter jumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing this year’s Autumn/ Winter collections during last month’s London Fashion Week. The first lady of British fashion today made her appearance at this season’s London Fashion Week. Samantha Cameron graced the front row of the Christopher Kane catwalk show at central London’s One New Change shopping centre. The Prime Minister’s wife, who is ambassador to the British Fashion Council (BFC), was spotted wearing a Joseph trouser suit and a Jonathan Saunders green shirt. She also sported a pair of wedged black high shoes showing off a small blue tattoo on her right ankle. Mrs Cameron chatted with BFC executives before watching the autumn/winter collection. Former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestant Holly Valance attended with her property tycoon fiancé Nick Candy. Singer Will Young wrapped up in a cosy cashmere knit.Boxer Amir Khan made up the sportspeople on the front row......along with former athlete Denise Lewis. Stella McCartney’s show proved her one of the most influential designers in the world. Much table hopping went on as Yasmin Le Bon chatted to Paul Whitehouse, Minnie Driver caught up with Mario Testino, Richard E Grant met Alison Mosshart, Jo Whiley caught up with British singing sensation Katy B - it was a case of who wasn’t there. As one of the greatest centres for culture and creativity, London is the proud home to some of the best designers and artists in the world and this melding of two dynamic strands will produce an exciting exhibition that will be a highlight of our celebrations for 2012.” The Arts Council England provided support for the commissioning of this project alongside individual donors including Meghan Mittal. 80%
of women are wearing the wrong bra. Everyone now knows this statistic but how many women actually know why wearing the right size is so important and take relevant steps to check that they are? There are many important reasons why wearing the right size is so crucial. For a start, it helps with the prevention and relief of many different posture related ailments like back and shoulder pains, underwire discomfort and other common posture problems. On the aesthetic side your silhouette looks better, and who doesn’t want that? For ladies who have undergone breast surgery like mastectomies, lumpectomies or reconstruction, ensuring you are in the right size is doubly important. Being in the correct size is essential in helping to estimate the
right size of prosthesis. Or in the case of reconstruction it gives a more natural look. Nowadays most hospitals will recommend a lady has a fitting before surgery for bras to wear immediately afterwards and another after their recovery period is complete. Having a personal fitting ensures you have the best start possible and choose the best possible lingerie. At the same time you have the expertise of a trained professional who is also there to answer any questions about the products you are interested in. This is where Eloise Lingerie comes in. Eloise carries the widest range of products from all the major post-surgery suppliers on the market. As well as lingerie Eloise also stock adapted swimwear, prostheses, tops, accessories and much more. They offer a free, impartial bra and prosthesis fitting service so you are sure to get the products best suited to your shape and requirements. Every product has been carefully selected to cover as many sizes and styles as possible so everyone is catered for. Uniquely, their fitters are also their buyers so customer feedback and requests are heavily taken into consideration when new lines are being chosen. In addition to all this they also have a pocketing service where you can get your own bras pocketed if you have personal favourites. Personal consultations at the Eloise showroom in South Wimbledon are allocated an hour to make certain all options are covered. Fittings are by appointment only and run from Monday to Friday; simply call to book or for any information. Visit their website at www.eloise.co.uk or give them a call on 0845 2255 080 and their team will be delighted to help.

weating is one of the most important ways in which the body loses heat, however, people with hyperhidrosis (Excessive sweating) produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature. It is thought that about 0.5% of the population (or about 1 person in 200) has some form of hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is a treatable medical condition which occurs regardless of environmental surroundings – people with hyperhidrosis sweat profusely nearly all day, every day. There are two main types; Primary (focal) hyperhidrosis can affect one or more body areas, most often the palms of hands, armpits, soles of the feet or face, and sometimes the groin in men and under the breasts in women. Secondary hyperhidrosis, however, is generalized, typically involving the whole body and caused by an underlying condition like diabetes or medication such as anti-depressants.
HoW is HypErHidrosis TrEaTEd?
Initially, simple self-help measures may be useful: • Wear Cool clothing • Avoiding certain foods which may trigger sweating ( such as caffeinated products, chocolate, spicy or sour foods, hot foods, alcohol, foods or drinks containing citric acid) • Reducing stress, tension or anxiety • Increased attention to personal hygiene 70 m a r c h 2 0 1 2
(FDA) approved Botox for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis in patients unable to obtain relief using antiperspirants. Treatment involves multiple tiny injections of botulinum toxin (type A) (botox) under each armpit. Effects start within the first week after treatment and last for an average of seven months before further injections are required. Side effects are rarely troublesome. TrEaTmEnTs:
Topical treatment with Aluminium chloride some rollon or aerosol anti-perspirants are the first-line treatment for Axilliary (underarm) hyperhidrosis. The effects last only for 48 hours and the deodorants can cause irritation to the underarms. The exception to this is if the excessive sweating symptoms occur during, or are exacerbated by, known anxiety-provoking situations such as during presentations at work. In these cases, treating the underlying anxiety is the best option. Iontophoresis is the passage of a weak electric current through a water bath. The area affected by sweating is immersed in the water and electrically charged particles clock the activity of sweat glands. When effective, this lasts for three-four days but can become longer with repeated use. With correct education and training, people can often perform this procedure at home. There is a variety of drug
treatments available. Some of these affect the body’s entire nervous system and side effects such as a dry mouth, drowsiness and constipation can be troublesome. Where sweating is made worse by stress or anxiety, other drugs (beta blockers) may be used with less troublesome side effects. Injections of botulinum toxin (type A) into the skin has been shown to be a very effective treatment for all types of focal hyperhidrosis, where people have not adequately responded to topical antiperspirant therapy or if the side effects of such therapy are intolerable. Your GP will be able to advise you on the treatments detailed in this article. Many cosmetic surgery or medi-spa clinics also offer injection treatment with botulinum toxin (type A). The International Hyperhidrosis Society is the only non-profit, independent, global organisation that increases awareness and understanding of excessive sweating, improves access to hyperhidrosis treatments and offers education for medical professionals in order to improve the diagnosis and care of excessive sweating.

HeaLtH Beauty on the thickness, a wider removal of the skin around a malignant melanoma is usually recommended. Malignant melanomas that are less than 1mm thick have a greater than 95% chance of causing no further trouble. Another way of measuring the thickness of a malignant melanoma is the Clarke’s level. This relates to which layers of the skin the malignant melanoma has penetrated. This is less accurate that the Breslow thickness in predicting the likelihood of further problems. mElanoma spECialisTs

Skin Check WHaT’s in a molE?
A mole (or naevus) is the term applied to any spot on the skin. Many moles are coloured (pigmented) but some have no colour. WHaT is a mElanoma?
A melanoma is the medical term for a mole. This simply means any pigmented or non pigmented lesion; it does not mean a cancer. Although most moles are brown, they can vary from flesh coloured through yellow and blue, to black. Moles can be many different shapes and can be single or multiple, on almost any part of the body. Everybody has moles; some people have more than others. Most moles have formed before the age of 20, but some people can get new moles well into their 30s or beyond. mElanoma sympToms
The vast majority of moles remain benign (non cancerous) and never cause any trouble. However, a small number may change with time and have the potential to become a cancerous mole (malignant melanoma). If a mole changes in size or colour, if it itches, 72 m a r c h 2 0 1 2
is painful or bleeds, or if new nodules develop around it or it looks red and inflamed then the mole should be removed for examination.

It is important that moles are removed properly so they can be thoroughly examined. It is usually recommended that moles are removed with an ellipse of normal skin around them, aiming for a 2mm margin of clearance. Most of the moles that are removed turn out to be fine. Pathologists (doctors who examine tissues under the microscope) use different terms for benign moles. They may be junctional, juvenile, blue, compound, dermal or intradermal. All these are descriptions for benign (non cancerous) moles. Some will be what are called dysplastic moles. These are thought to be precancerous moles that have the potential to become malignant melanomas
if they are left. Although many of them may not turn cancerous it is impossible to tell and so they should probably be removed. The next stage after the dysplastic mole is the malignant melanoma in situ. This has just turned cancerous, but does not have the ability to spread. Like the dysplastic mole, it is cured by removing it properly. Malignant melanomas proper have the ability to spread around the body, so the earlier they are caught the better. It seems that the most important factor in determining whether a malignant melanoma may have spread or not is its thickness. This is measured in mm and is called the Breslow thickness. Depending
who have had malignant melanomas are treated by a team of specialists. Melanoma specialists include a dermatologist, a surgeon and perhaps a plastic surgeon, an oncologist and a pathologist. Malignant melanoma risk factors Some groups of people should be regularly checked for abnormal moles. These include people who have had a malignant melanoma before, or there is a family history of it, fair skinned, fair haired or red haired people and those with a large number of moles, as well as those who have had considerable sun exposure in their lives, particularly with episodes of severe sunburn when they were young. NAIL IT THIS SPRING!
by lEVanah rEyEs-wainwright
a
s nail polish sales continue to rise, (surpassing lipsticks as our go-to beauty buy) find out what colours you need to be sporting this Spring/ Summer to be bang on trend. The new season nail colours are in, and nowadays they are as lusted after as the new season it-bag or the latest hemline. We ladies know that the best way to work a trend without having to pay a fortune is to fancy up our fingernails. Nail colours for the Spring/ Summer 2012 seem to fall into two strict camps: neon or nude. First up, leading the trend in an ever brilliant mini boxset is Nails Inc. The New Neon & Nude Collection (£22, nailsinc.com) brings together three of their best selling nude classics paired with three brand new ultra-bright neons. From the muted mushroom of Porchester Square to the Coral neon of Portobello, this mini polish set is a great way to combine a nude base 78 m a r c h 2 0 1 2
with neon tips for a colourful unique ‘french manicure’ look. With nude being the must have nail shade, there are an array of neutral colours popping up to tame our talons. Get a colour that is as close to your natural skin tone as possible for the chicest results. For an affordable take on the trend, Andrea Fullerton Nail Boutique has created ‘Matthew’ (£4.99, Superdrug stores nationwide). This is a nude baby pink shimmer following on from the desert island texture inspired nails she created at the namesake Matthew Williamson SS ‘11 show. And if the nude shade you’re wearing doesn’t excite you as much as the fresh brights, simply press Andrea’s new Pearl Nail Studs (£5.99) into semi-wet varnish for timeless elegance. Celebrity favourite OPI also have a library of natural shades (£11, lenawhite. co.uk). Their latest softshades collection is inspired by the
world renowned New York City Ballet featuring five pretty nude pastel shades to take you from office-chic to stylish evening glamour. ‘Barre My Soul’ is a beautiful sheer hint of light barely-there caramel and is extremely flattering on paler skin tones. If you want to channel Kate Middleton’s subtle naked nail glamour like she did at her wedding day last April, chemical free nail brand Zoya (£11, 01753573423) have brought out ultra longlasting ladylike muted shades, like the wearable milky lilac Kendal and a silver based soft grey called Carey. To carry off the pastel colours that have been introduced to steer us seamlessly from winter to spring, Mavala Nail Ambassador Jenni Draper recommends the style be altogether more feminine. “The nail shape should be shorter, round and elegant”, she says. I predict that the spearmint green sherbet shade of ‘Pistachio’ from Mavala’s Delicious collection (£4.30 each, 01732459412) to be a huge hit to add a hint of playfulness to your look. ORLY’s new ‘Cool Romance’ Collection (£9.25 each,orlybeauty.co.uk) consists
of 6 delicate, sophisticated hues that bridge that gap between winter’s deep berry lacquers and summer’s bright fluoro’s. ‘Prelude to a Kiss’ is a dainty yet dusky pink, which has great staying power and good opaque coverage. The neon trend is almost certainly the result of the big beauty houses. This season’s Chanel Le Vernis Spring Collection (£17.50 each, Harrods) is comprised of a trilogy, whose names list the months associated with fine weather. April is a highly luminous wild berry shade, May instill’s happiness with an intense pink and June offers us a foretaste of summer with a pastel apricot. Fresh fruit sorbet colours dominate at Yves Saint Laurent with the limited edition N°8 Manucure Couture Duo (£28, available nationwide) comprising of an iridescent pink and coral. Leighton Denny’s vibrant and violet ‘Maroon Me Knot’ (£11, John Lewis) from the Castaway collection is reminiscent of the eye popping tropical colours inspired by the recent Diane von Furstenberg collections; whilst ciaté paint pot in ‘pom pom’ (£9, ciate.co.uk) provides the powerful orange seen on the SS12 Prada and Jonathan Saunders shows. The highly saturated bubblegum pink pigment of Pink Crush (£25, 08700342566) by Fashion designer Tom Ford, is one of my new covetable shades. The intense glossiness of Pink Crush is a definite style statement with Ford commenting that “Perfectly lacquered nails complete your look, whether you have one signature look or you love to transform yourself with color”. New silicon-free balm textured Elemis Pro-Radiance Hand & Nail Cream (£22, timetospa.co.uk) formulated with Omega 7 and Virgin Plum oil, is the perfect final addition to your manicure routine. It will ensure that you can pull off either the neon or nude talon trend successfully with hydrated hands.

How would you suggest they set their budget? It depends if it is purely an investment or their home. I suggest a budget in line with their expectations. There are some great ways in which to cut cost and still deliver a 5* finish. Are people concerned about how long a project will take? Yes, time is usually tight. I would always give the client a realistic timeline, for example a kitchen renovation
without an extension would take 2-3 weeks. What are common pitfalls people experience during a renovation? Colour can dramatically change a room, and what looks good on a small swatch can look very different on the wall. People waste time looking for suppliers and products themselves. By hiring a renovation expert the process is not only more enjoyable but cost-effective. Need an experienced and enthusiastic expert to help you avoid the pitfalls? Create your dream bathroom Founded in 1988, Ripples has been creating awardwinning luxury designer bathrooms for 24 years. Ripples was never meant to be about just selling bathrooms. It was based on design solutions and creating a world of style and quality where you could envisage, and make real your own dream of what you want your bathroom to be. We want a visit to Ripples to be more than a simple shopping trip – we make sure our design service will open your eyes to the hidden potential of your bathroom. This includes paying attention to detail and this is where we add those all-important personal touches, which include designs that are hand-drawn to help you create your own, individual bathroom scheme. Alberto Lutzu – Senior Designer
When tiling a smaller room using a smaller tile would be easier but if designed well with minimal cuts a large format tile can do wonders at making the room feel larger. Tiles are a great way of introducing light or adding drama to a room. Light coloured tiles can really brighten a dull room and give the feeling of more space. Where as a well chosen darker tile can add a dramatic touch. When choosing a floor tile safety is key. Although a high gloss tile may look stunning it will become extremely slippery when wet, so a tile with a flat matt or slightly textured finish would be best suited for the floor. Melinda Hill – Senior Designer
A glamorous bathroom can be created by combining and contrasting bright colours, different textures, patterns, materials & finishes. Whether these contrasts are subtle or stark, it depends on how adventurous you want to be. The current trends in creating a glamorous bathroom are: l High shine lacquers on furniture in stark white or black. l Polished marble & high gloss tiles are making a huge comeback l Boldly coloured feature walls is glass mosaic tiles or paint Purple has made a huge comeback. Rich plum purples teamed with fresh high gloss white tiles and high gloss furniture will create a glamorous feel to any bathroom. The final touch is to choose some brassware maybe in a more interesting colour or design. Or choose a more traditional or ornate style or how about gold or black for something very on trend. 116 Fulham Road, London, SW3 6HU, Tel 020 7373 3668 138 Wigmore Street, London, W1U 3SG, Tel 020 7935 6112 12 Lichfield Terrace, Sheen Road, Richmond, TW9 1AS, Tel 020 3166 4008. www.ripples.ltd.uk 84 m a r c h 2 0 1 2

London basements
the only way is down
W
ith every square foot of floor space at a premium within London, basement construction has become the most popular form of home expansion. When you have either expanded to the limits of your property above ground, or have been refused planning for expansion above, a basement is the obvious solution. Maggie Smith of London Basement tells me that it is no longer a second choice for expanding homes, it has become the first choice for home owners and indeed for purchasers of new properties. It is the only way to gain such a large amount of space, indeed, a whole new floor level! London Basement is the original basement company, who have been building basements for over 15 years and have to date built a remarkable 1000 basements. Maggie Smith told us that they have seen a steady increase in the construction of basements over the years and they are generally working on an average of 30 – 40 sites at any time. The reasons are simple and obvious, the improvement in lifestyle, a basement is
88 m a r c h 2 0 1 2
generally cheaper than moving, taking into account the larger house, stamp duty and moving costs, the added living space is a perfect investment in your home where properties have achieved a 30% increase in value and when you have invested time and money to create your home and perhaps your children are settled in local schools, a new basement floor level to improve your lifestyle, makes complete sense. The old concept of dark damp basements has been fully dispelled, as you can see from the portfolio on London Basement’s web site, showing wonderful living and entertainment areas, as well as the necessities, such as an extra bathroom. It is also refreshing to find a company that provides a true design, build and project management service, with all staff trained to the highest standards. Research has shown that there are many new companies springing up, stating that they have the experience and history to be able to take on these highly specialised projects, but please make sure to do your research into the track record of any company you are considering. You are putting the very foundations of your property into their hands, so you need absolute certainty that you are dealing with the very best with the design, engineering and construction expertise necessary to safeguard your home. A Victorian Family Home
Transformed N
Want the ideal space for modern family life? See how one couple’s knack for spotting great potential, coupled with an eye for design and a great building team, transformed this Victorian home.
ot everyone could fall in love with a house stuck in the 1970s complete with cigar stained walls, chintzy carpets and dodgy coloured bathrooms but for the Bessler family, it presented the perfect challenge. “We wanted a project; something that added value and that we could put our own mark on,” Sally remembers. “There was barely any natural light and the old owner had ripped out nearly all of the original features. As a project manager however, it was the perfect opportunity for me to put my skills to a rewarding use.” Confident they could turn this Victorian house into a fabulous family home and with a new baby on the way, the couple set about choosing a building team. At first, the Besslers anticipated using the building company from their previous project to realise their vision. After spotting L&E (Lofts and Extensions) in a local paper however, they felt they had nothing to lose by getting them round to quote for the work. “The surveyor from L&E arrived and instilled a lot of confidence in me. He was amiable and very patient as there were a lot of points I wanted to clarify,” Sally comments. “We also liked the fact they came as a team and so could oversee the whole project rather than us needing additional contractors. They then took us to see five completed L&E
92 m a r c h 2 0 1 2
projects where all of the owners we met were obviously so proud of what the builders had created. This gave us the confidence to choose L&E for our own build.” With the building team in place, work started almost immediately. Structurally, the plan was to remodel and extend the boxy ground floor area to open and lighten the space while incorporating a utility, cloakroom and storage area. The rear extension would be followed through to the first floor to house a large master bedroom and en-suite with vaulted ceilings and skylights. Although not vital for their immediate needs, the couple chose to incorporate
a loft extension in the build to maximise the home’s potential and avoid revisiting the project at a later stage. The biggest challenge they faced was getting planning permission for the large, twostorey rear extension. While awaiting this, work started on permitted development including the loft conversion and internal work. Work progressed quickly. “They worked tirelessly and we built up a really good rapport with the team. The fact they were so quick meant that sometimes we weren’t quite ready for them and had to make decisions quickly in order to keep up.” Sally comments. At last, the vital rear
extension permissions came through. “We immediately contacted L&E to tell them,” Sally remembers. “The next day we visited the house to find an unusual amount of light coming through the front door.” Sally laughs. “They had taken down the whole of the rear of the house – it was so exciting and very efficient. Our next door neighbours were so amazed they even filmed it happening.” Living and working in Canary Wharf, the couple were unable to be on site for much of the time. “We came down every Saturday to meet with the builders. I was pregnant too so it was exhausting, but they were very flexible and waited for us to arrive even after they should have left. Our neighbours commented on how good they were and how considerate,” Sally remembers. The foreman also made suggestions on how to improve the original design. “Our architect had put in plans where the supports would need to jut out from the wall. L&Es builders suggested that these beams could be taken back to give us a flush wall. It made the look so much better for us and was above and beyond the call of duty.” Sitting in their bright and spacious kitchen it’s hard to imagine the unwelcoming, confined space that this once was. The light, airy feel is emphasised throughout the house with white walls, warm oak flooring and skylights
Bring as much light in as possible, improving both sunlight and quality of space by introducing rooflights or roof lanterns.
while contemporary style furniture makes the most of the space. The kitchen-diner is one of the many defining features of this build with its bi-folding doors and rooflights allowing light to flood in and creating an organic connection between inside and out. The vaulted ceilings in the bedroom and bathroom meanwhile add instant character and drama. Upstairs the loft extension allows plenty of room for visiting guests. The redesigned space has given them a whole new way of living, replacing boxy rooms with a layout that flows into workable linked space. “We love it and it couldn’t have come at a better time with our first baby’s arrival four weeks later,” Sally says. So were they pleased they choose L&E to complete the build? “Yes, there were so many good things. At first we were worried as they were a new team to us. Going with L&E, a team we didn’t know, rather than our old builders who we had been happy with was a big risk.” That risk paid off however. “L&E were professional and efficient. They were patient and flexible when we slowed them down. We would definitely work with them again.” With a new baby at home there may not be much time for relaxing but the Besslers now have a calm, tranquil haven to call their own and the odd occasion to get a moments peace. “Lying our baby down to watch him gaze happily up through the skylights in itself is priceless!” Mr and Mrs Bessler are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing. Replacement windows and doors substantially enhance heat retention, noise insulation and isn’t it nice to have windows that open and doors that close! It can appear to be a daunting process replacing windows and doors. In an ordered and well worked fashion the Ayrton designers conduct a full survey, discuss design and plans with the customer before manufacturing commences. Fitting is typically 8 to 10 weeks later, carried out by their in house team who ensure that there is minimum disruption to the property. The company has experience working with local authorities and understands the planning stipulations for approval of changes to windows and doors in London’s conservation areas (and listed buildings). With an increased focus on refurbishment in the house market, the company is also involved with extension work and in particular the supply and fit of bi fold doors. National Bed Month Top 5 tips for choosing the right bed this National Bed Month. By bed expert Brent Cooper

arch is National Bed Month – an entire month dedicated to celebrating the most important piece of furniture in the home. Below, Britain’s luxury bed expert Brent Cooper – MD of Marshall & Stewart and former Hästens sleep expert, 100 m a r c h 2 0 1 2
shares his top tips for buying the right bed to provide quality, restorative sleep – every night. “A restful night of quality sleep is vital for good health. Give it the attention it deserves. Grumpiness, irritability, short temper and short term memory loss are all symptoms of sleep deprivation. If you want
to work well, enjoy good relationships with your lovedones and work colleagues then improve your sleep quality.” Brent Cooper, Marshall & Stewart bed expert Marshall & Stewart is a luxury British bed retailer based in two central London showrooms offering the finest collection of bespoke,
handcrafted beds. The six models in the inaugural Diamond Collection are made by experts using traditional craftsmanship and innovative designs to create beds which are sanctuaries for restorative sleep. Designed by Brent Cooper, each bed is handcrafted by layering the very finest

How to choose the perfect bed ✱ A bed must be supportive but that
does not mean it has to be hard. Hard beds are not good for you, but good support is crucial. Firm beds are for heavy people - the heavier a person is, the firmer the springs need to be.

✱ Length is important – your bed should

natural materials and a progressive, intelligent spring system providing unparalleled comfort. “For decades the UK bed industry has been laying dormant, creating good beds but focusing solely on the support they provide. At Marshall & Stewart we look at things differently. A bed needs to be supportive, but it also must complement a person’s sleep cycle, only then can the bed induce excellent quality, restorative sleep. When this is achieved correctly,
are not as luxurious as a mattress and sprung divan. Don’t sacrifice aesthetics for good support; your sleep quality will be compromised.
as it is with the Diamond Collection beds, a person will experience a kind of sleep beyond their wildest dreams. The industry needs to evolve, and we’re happy to be leading the way,” added Mr Cooper. The Diamond Collection beds are categorised by their traditional and contemporary design. The collection’s flagship bed - the Koh-INoor and the Orloff feature superb bases with hour glass springs that are hand-lashed, while the contemporary Cullinan, Florentine, Sancy
and Hortensia boast the latest in spring technology ensuring luxurious support and incredible sleep comfort. All models are layered with lambswool, cotton and horsehair and each mattress is built around an intelligent spring system to provide ultimate comfort. Marshall & Stewart understand that the third of a person’s life spent in bed is the foundation for the two thirds they spend awake. For this reason, every bed is made to the specific requirements of the client, taking into consideration size, weight and lifestyle. A complimentary in-store design service is provided for all clients enabling them to choose from an extensive selection of bed legs and fabrics. Clients and designers are also welcome to provide a fabric of their choosing which can be used on the divan and headboard ensuring the bed is bespoke to them. he new Lelievre Rendez-vous Collection of fabrics for 2012 brings together diverse fabric styles and textures in perfect tune with current design trends and a humourous nod back to the 1950s. Lelievre have been producing fabrics, decorative accessories and designer collections for the home since
1914. Working hand in hand with interior designers, the design team use themes both traditional and contemporary in their collections with unique creativity and technical innovation. Four generations of this French family owned company have been driven by a desire for perfection in the manufacture and design of beautiful textiles. A strong palette of colours enhances the fabrics in
this collection while the matt and sheen textural effects add dimension and luxury for curtains, blinds, upholstery and accessories. See how the flocked eyelash design of Mascara flirts with the multi-coloured embroidered lozenges on Fibule while subtle soft waves in Washi vie for attention with the minimalist upholstery weight design Facette and discrete Mirage.

Mascara reflects the current trend for modernity and the 1950s. Available in 6 colours, the flocked eyelashes are highlighted by precise pearlescent shading. Fibule has randomly scattered embroidered battons in glowing colours on 8 elegant neutral backgrounds of silk and cotton. Washi has a soft subtle wave impression transforming the cotton, viscose and silk texture in 8 bright fresh colours. Mirage is a cross between plain and tone on tone and is the basis of the collection with 26 colours including neutrals and more audacious bold shades. Facette is a mini-mosaic with contrasting nuances creating a tone on tone timeless upholstery weight fabric. Aptly named RendezVous, the collection brings together all the trends and tones of the season ... Perhaps it’s time for a rendez-vous chez vous! SWIM AT HOME EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR AN ORIGIN POOL. IT'S A FAMILY THING...
O
rigin has been in the business of constructing indoor and outdoor swimming pools for over thirty years. In that time they have progressed from simple timber buildings to the impressive architect design schemes of today. To celebrate this anniversary Origin has commissioned a total redesign of their visual identity. This includes a bright new logo, excitingly updated publicity material and van fleet, and an interactive user-friendly website. To accompany this flurry of activity the company has produced an all new colour brochure, showing as never before the breadth of Origin's capability. Covering all the styles that this unique British company has become known for, from classic original styles to custom designed extensions that are a true product of yours and Origin's combined thinking, the brochure is economical with words, letting the beautiful pictures tell the story. Origin has also committed to an occasional newsletter, NewsWave, to announce the latest and greatest improvements the company has been working ?

on, and of course show the pick of the recent triumphs. Add a monthly emailing, Origin eNews, and the new publicity thrust is complete ready to take on the next thirty years! But the caring attention to detail, the meticulous, design work and the insistence of only using the finest materials available hasn't changed. The company still handles every element of the process, without bringing in any outside experts whatsoever. From the first meeting, to the sketch ideas produced as a result, to the architectural drawings and finished visuals, to the guidance through the planning process, to the earthworks, the building and completing. Origin takes the process from beginning to end -
and all you have to do is jump into the state-of-the-art heated pool at the end of it all. Origin has become Britain's longest established, best known pool company because they have accepted every challenge, crossed every hurdle, and with great experience and ingenuity created a product that is considered second to none, by customers and the pool industry alike. The architects and designers are seasoned players in their fields, and bring a wealth of experience to every aspect of this complex and demanding business. Even the teams who build the final pool houses are eminently professional, many having been involved since the very early days of the company. Building an indoor pool house is a complex business, so many of Origin's buildings are based on the company's established styles. For example,
The Panorama has a light, airy construction with a bright hipped glazed lantern roof – and is built from solid timber with an optional brick or rendered facing, to co-ordinate with the style of your home. The Barn has all the appearance and appeal of a country barn conversion, but built to state-of-the-art standards to be the home for a superb heated pool. The Sirius has exceptional designer looks and a wide expanse of glass bringing a real indoor/outdoor feel to your swimming. These established style-inspired pool houses come in a wide range of standard sizes, and the heated pool will be in a style of your choice. Origin is recognised as the foremost designers of one-o buildings and extensions, designed and developed to co-ordinate with their surroundings perfectly. Materials and finishes are carefully matched with the existing structure – so the finished result is a handsome extension to the property, hiding a luxurious heated pool. To do full justice to Origin's expertise they include outdoor pools as part of their remit. The company is famous for creating pool houses, but they are all too aware that many people prefer to swim in the sun (or under the stars) and an outdoor pool can be one of the most aspirational features a home can have. The level of skill and understanding of pool technology has helped Origin to become one of the country's foremost outdoor pool providers. Origin's new logo has a strapline "The original indoor & outdoor pool company." Get in touch, and find out just why the original is usually the best. Britain’s Billionaire’s Row K ensington Palace Gardens is a street in west central London which contains some of the grandest and most expensive houses in the world. It was the location of the London Cage, the British government MI9 centre used during the Second World War and the Cold War. A tree-lined avenue half a mile long in the heart of embassy land, Kensington Palace Gardens is the “most exclusive address” in London, according to Knight Frank. It is one of the most expensive residential streets in the world, and has long been known as “Billionaires Row”, due to the wealth of its private residents, although the majority of its current occupants are embassies and ambassadorial residences. It is immediately to the west of Kensington Gardens and connects Notting Hill Gate with Kensington High Street. The southern section of Kensington Palace Gardens is called Palace Green. It was built from the 1840s onwards, on part of the grounds of Kensington Palace and the freehold still belongs to the Crown Estate. The palace, which is the residence of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, fronts the southern part of the street on the eastern side.
118 m a r c h 2 0 1 2
The most expensive street is in London’s Kensington Palace Gardens, where the average property costs £18 million.
The houses at the northern end are mostly Italianate, while those at the southern end are mostly in the Queen Anne style. For much of the 20th century a large proportion of the houses were occupied by embassies and ambassadors’ residences. Some still are, but others have been renovated by the Crown Estate and sold to private buyers on long leases. One of these was bought in 2004 by the Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, who in 2008 was listed by Forbes Magazine as the fourth richest man in the world. The sale was widely misreported at £70 million, before accurate figures were available from HM Land Registry, where records state that on 30 June 2004, 18-19 Kensington Palace Gardens, along with three mews houses at the rear of the property, sold for £57,145,967 Formerly, this house was owned by Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One racing boss. On October 8, 2001, he purchased the house from Iranian scholar and philanthropist David Khalili for £50 million. This was substantially less than the asking price of £85 million when it was placed on the market by Savills in spring 2001. However, it was reported that Ecclestone’s wife, Slavica, never liked the 55,000-squarefoot, 18-bedroom mansion so they never moved in. Khalili spent three years and more than £20 million turning the two houses into one, building a swimming pool and indulging in his taste for marble floors and pillars (with marble from the same quarry as that used for the Taj Mahal). Paul Reuter, the founder of the Reuters news agency, was also a former resident. No 8 was used as an interrogation centre for German POWs during World War II and was known as the London Cage. The house was replaced in 1964 by a glass-and-steel block designed by Richard Seifert, now divided into four apartments. Flat 3 was on the market in 2006 as a three-bedroom apartment designed by international architect David Chipperfield, valued at a minimum of £13.25 million through Knight Frank. Chancery of the Russian Federation
Due mainly to the presence of high-profile terrorist targets such as the Israeli and Russian Embassies, both ends of the street have armed police checkpoints (Diplomatic Protection Group officers) with crash barriers as well as the original wrought-iron gates. This has the side effect of extremely low traffic for a central London street. Some of the buildings also have barriers to keep vehicles at a distance. march2012

Fun. Seriously.
If there’s one car, which the description ‘fun’ fits like a hand tailored suit, it’s the Beetle. A car with a look so distinctive, it effortlessly evokes memories that have as much to do with lifestyle as they do with getting from A to B. Now comes the latest Beetle. And while it’s still very much a Beetle, it’s also a car of its time. The leaner look is definitely a touch more masculine, athletic even. While options include features that, frankly, would have been unthinkable back in the day. Options such as Bi-Xenon headlights, keyless entry, panoramic sunroof and, not least, the Fender sound system. Developed in conjunction with the legendary guitar company – cue heavy rock-style riff – this system offers 400W output and a subwoofer, along with switchable three-colour illumination surrounding the front speakers. This latest Beetle comes in the entry £16,490 Beetle model, Design (£18,895) and top of the range Sport (£21,220). Spec levels are high, and on the Design and Sport you can also choose between retro or contemporary alloy wheels. All in all, a car that, in keeping with its times, has a more serious side to it. But also a car where the fun aspect hasn’t been required to take a back seat.
Alan Day Hampstead 277 Finchley Road, London NW3 6LT Telephone: 020 7305 7145. Official fuel consumption in mpg (litres/100km) for the Beetle range: urban 32.5 (8.7) – 38.7 (7.3); extra urban 53.5 (5.3) – 56.5 (5.0); combined 42.8 (6.6) – 47.9 (5.9). CO2 emissions 153 – 137g/km.
