ALWAYS ON GUARD WESTMINSTER SECURITY
Close protection is a specialist security service often thought to be the reserve of the ‘rich and famous’. However, in the modern world of police cuts and an increase in crime close protection services have become ever more popular with families and business owners.
So, what is close protection and what does it entail? Close protection more widely referred to as bodyguard services, or personal protection is the provision of physical personal security to protect a person or group of people from harm or attack be it targeted or a general local threat.
Essentially, it is hiring bodyguards. Not your stereotypical burly bodyguard romanticised and depicted in TV and film, but a discrete nonimposing, non-threatening professional close protection operative (CPO) embedded with a family or company that does not draw unwanted or unwarranted attention by undesirables. They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to keep clients safe from danger.
Despite how bodyguards are perceived, close protection operatives do not spend each day toeto-toe fighting off enemies. Research and planning
bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, or
are key, identifying threats and risks, and avoiding any physical altercation at all costs. Real-world bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, or nannies. Female bodyguards are increasingly popular with high-net-worth families with their stealth ability and emotional intelligence. With close protection being such a vital service for high-profile and high-risk individuals and families it is important to hire bodyguards through a highly credible, experienced, and established security company that is licensed and insured to provide such services. It is worth noting that household staffing agencies cannot legally satisfy these prerequisites.
Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond.

Life In The Fast Lane
How long have you been in car sales?
I have been in car sales for in total for around 3 years.
What first attracted you to the automotive industry?
I have a personal interest in cars and also wanted to pursue a career in sales so the two came hand in hand. I was offered a number of industry roles but I chose Honda as it is my preferred brand
How did your first day/week go?
Especially in a predominantly male environment? My first week in car sales was fun, it’s a very fast paced role, with lots to learn. I was thrown in the deep end which was good as you learn a lot quicker. Things are different now as you can be part of a trainee program which wasn’t an opportunity when I first came into this role. It is a male dominated environment still, but a lot less so than when I first started which is encouraging to see.
How did you hear about Brayley Honda?
I used to work for a Honda dealership which Brayleys took over, and then researched and saw they are the largest privately owned Honda group in the UK
Obviously, you are happy with Brayleys, is there anything that stood out to you that made you want to join them after your interview? Yes, Brayleys is a thriving company which is always expanding. This makes it the perfect company to learn and progress.
What would you say is you favourite model in the range?
It is hard to choose as all the models have various qualities, but if I had to choose one it would be the Honda Jazz.
Can you tell us about this model?
This a small hatchback which has won multiple awards for being the best small car of the year. It utilises the space really well, with multiple customers referring to it as a tardis. It is very fuel efficient and has the magic seats.
Is there any advice you would give for those who are considering purchasing or changing their car?
I would say to buy from a dealership as opposed to private sale, as you get peace of mind with the process which dealerships have to adhere to. Also to do some research, but then not too much as the best thing to do is to just come in and see if the car is for you.
Finally, for any female that has thought about joining the motor trade, what advice could you pass on?
To be strong, independent and show the men how it’s done!
How can I protect my property from property fraud?
The value of property and the fact it can be sold or mortgaged to raise money means it’s attractive for fraudsters. Some attempt to steal your identity then sell or mortgage your property by pretending to be you; others try to acquire ownership of a property by using forged documents to transfer it into their name, sometimes even while you are living there! They then raise mortgages or loans against, or sell, your property without your knowledge, and resolving the issue can be distressing, timeconsuming and costly. Victims can find they have to leave their home as there’s nothing that can be done to get the property back.
Are you at risk?
The scam typically targets properties where owners are less likely to notice that fraudulent documents have been created, so homes that are:
• Mortgage-free
• Empty
• Not registered on the Land Registry
• Where the owner lives elsewhere, e.g. buy-to-lets or holiday homes
What do we recommend?
We aim to make the conveyancing process as stress free as possible for you, which is why you can rely on us to draw potential issues to your attention at an early stage and suggest potential solutions. This includes the risk of property fraud, so we always recommend you set up a property alert with HM Land Registry.
What is the HM Land Registry’s Property Alert service?
It offers a simple way for homeowners to protect themselves against property title fraud. You can sign up in minutes and register up to 10 properties. Email alerts are sent when HM Land Registry receives an application to change the register as well as for official searches, so you can judge whether the activity is suspicious and if you should seek further advice. You also don’t have to own a property to set
up an alert, so you can monitor the property for a relative or friend.
If you receive an alert about suspicious activity, you should contact a suitably qualified professional immediately. You can contact the Land Registry Property Alert team on 0300 006 0478.

Do I Need a Solicitor for My Divorce?
Since April 2022 the law in relation to obtaining a divorce in England and Wales has changed. This is the first change in 50 years.
We now have the “no fault divorce” which simplifies the process. The application is made online by completing a form and ticking a box to state that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. The process is straightforward, and some now choose to submit the application without the assistance of a solicitor.
You may therefore ask why would I need a solicitor?
It is always sensible to seek specialist advice regarding children and finances. Obtaining a divorce is an emotional time of change and having some
guidance about what is fair in relation to your children and finances can be crucial. Getting advice early on may prevent you taking an action that could prejudice you further down the line.
If you think you have reached an agreement with your spouse a solicitor can make sure it is in your best interests and is fair. Many people believe an equal division of assets is inevitable but that is not always the case. The law considers the needs of you and your children and tries to achieve fairness. Issues such as earning capacity, mortgage capacity, contributions, age, length of marriage and health all play a part in reaching a fair division of assets.
The reasons to seek advice are many and include:
• If there are business assets or trusts.
• If there is an imbalance of bargaining power between you and your spouse.
• If you do not know the extent of your spouse’s assets and you think they may be being dishonest about assets or hiding them.
• If the situation is becoming acrimonious.
• If there are pensions. When negotiating an agreement many people forget about pensions. Pensions on divorce are a complex but important issue. Aside from the matrimonial home they are often the largest asset owned by a couple and knowing your options is very important.
• If you have inherited assets. There are circumstances when you may be able to ringfence an inheritance and keep it from your spouse.
• If significant assets are at stake, it is extremely important to obtain legal advice.
• If your spouse does not acknowledge the divorce proceedings, then a solicitor may be required to progress the divorce. Many solicitors will charge a fixed fee to obtain the divorce for you and some people find it easier and less stressful to hand everything over to a solicitor.
• In the long run having a solicitor can save time and avoid you ending up in Court.
• If a stalemate is reached in negotiations with a spouse a solicitor can help to break that deadlock and avoid the whole agreement breaking down and the matter ending up in Court.
• A solicitor can take the stress out of the situation for you. If you have a solicitor they receive all communications from the Court and your spouse or their solicitor and your solicitor can act as a buffer and filter the information and explain it to you as soon as it is received.
• Children are often a particularly emotive subject and getting some input from an impartial third party can be essential.
Even if you have reached a fair agreement with your spouse regarding financial matters, to make it legally binding and to avoid one party reneging on it and making a claim in the future you should have the agreement made into a Consent Order by the Court. This would entail a solicitor drafting your agreement into a Court Order which is sent to the Court to approve on the paperwork alone so no attendance at Court is required.
The law is complicated, and an experienced solicitor can guide you through your options. The solicitor can be involved as much or as little as you need. Many people have an initial consultation to get some idea of what is fair and can then go away and reach an agreement with their spouse whether by direct conversations or in mediation and then return to the solicitor to have any agreement made into a Consent order. The service offered by a solicitor can be tailored to meet your needs and financial resources.

THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN YOUR AREA
Inspiring Opportunity and Adventure The Bickley Park Way
Bickley Park’s vision is to deliver a world-class education for boys up to 13+ as well as Nursery boys and girls.
With over one hundred years of experience, the school thoroughly understands growing boys’ natural curiosity and enthusiasm and ensures full engagement in a curriculum, which is designed to be fun, motivating and challenging.
This year Bickley Park is launching an exciting new outdoor education programme to foster team and leadership skills, whilst developing independence and the ability to manage risk.
Adventure School will see all boys in Years 3 to 8 taking part in residential trips which will focus on progressively demanding survival skills and challenges. From camping in the Peak District and the South Downs to a Kayaking adventure along the
Cornish Coast, the trips promise to be fun, exciting and motivational.
Our younger boys in Reception to Year 2 also take part in regular Forest School sessions in local woodland which develops understanding and respect for the natural world.
Building resilience, teamwork and leadership skills is essential, as is teaching pupils how to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life and to respect inclusiveness.
Boys improve in behaviour, concentration and academic performance when their learning environment is shaped to their needs. Outcome focused learning impacts positively on boys’ motivation to achieve.
Fynn, Year 8: started in Reception and gained a place at Tonbridge with a Cowdrey Scholarship for September 2023
“Bickley Park has prepared me for Senior School by not only helping me to excel in my academics and Sport but also with my manners and confidence.”
The Bickley Park Journey
For most children, their journey at Bickley Park starts in our Nursery. This is the foundation of the Early Years education in the Pre-Prep Department and for many boys the start of a ten-year journey through to Year 8 in the Prep School.
Jon Poole, Head of Pre-Prep explains, “Whether the Nursery children are playing in the mud kitchen, the garden or exploring the variety of different areas around the school, we are working with them right from the outset to nurture and establish lifelong skills across our Four Quadrants of Learning.”
Certainly, fantastic facilities across the school allow children from Nursery through to the Senior Years to develop and excel. From the purpose-built science labs in the Prep Department through to the climbing wall, swimming pool, Astro-turf pitches, tennis courts and the theatre, the school provides a breadth of opportunities in both lessons and after school. Opportunities such as school productions and Adventure School all foster enthusiasm for taking part and embracing personal challenge.
Senior boys enjoy significantly greater responsibility than peers already at senior schools and boys gain leadership skills through undertaking significant positions of responsibility.
As their time at Bickley Park enters the final four years, we believe the value of the Prep School system is most clearly illustrated and each boys’ journey stands them in excellent stead for what is ahead of them.
Four Quadrants of Learning
Commended for our ‘coherent and holistic Four Quadrants of Learning’ by the Independent Schools of the Year judging panel, these pillars of our curriculum in Academic, Arts, Sport and Outdoors and Community, offer a huge range of opportunities for boys to acquire a well-rounded love of learning, fire their varied interests and develop skills for life.
Excellent Results at 11+ and 13+
Our boys work towards gold-standard exams when they are 13, which provide excellent preparation for GCSE. They perform well in entrance examinations gaining places at a wide variety of schools often with scholarships.
Some boys also leave Bickley Park at 11 years old, usually to go to Grammar School. In 2023 95% of our Year 6 boys that sat Grammar School tests gained a place.
Bickley Park provides bespoke guidance to fully support you in securing a place at the most suitable senior school for your son.
Sam Patel, Head of Prep concludes, “At Bickley Park we provide a high-quality, well-rounded education that inspires and engages boys. This enables them to stand out from the crowd at senior school, university and in the rest of their lives – as a quality Prep School should. Boys leave us confident and articulate young men, ready for exceptional future schools and well equipped to take their place in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.”
The best way to understand our school is to visit. Our next Open Morning is Friday 28th April. We would love to meet you.

As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…
•Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting
•It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly
•Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.
•Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally
•Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY….
Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.
•How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?
•Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?
•Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure)
•What are the classroom sizes?
•What is expected of my child with regard to homework?
•Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?
•Is there a bullying policy?
•What lunchtime meals are available?
•What sports and music facilities are available?
•What after school clubs and trips are available?
•How many pupils branch out into further education?
After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.
Culture – it’s intentional
Many people talk about culture in education. It can be easy to talk about but hard to pin down. Culture is often seen as: The way we do things around here.
Dr Simon Camby, Chief Education Officer for Cognita Global Group of Schools visited Breaside recently and these are his observations from his visit.
I first visited Breaside Preparatory School in 2015 and, for me, it is always a special place. Why? There are many reasons, but one is the culture of the school. The culture is displayed through so many observable signs.
• I always stand with the leadership team on the school gate as children and parents enter. Without exception, every child says, ‘good morning’ and engages with the school’s leaders. Sometimes a few words, sometimes a full conversation; but always a meaningful connection.
• I notice that children look out for each other. They show genuine care and encouragement for their classmates. They ‘wrap an arm around’, sometimes physically and sometimes metaphorically. This isn’t for show, it is just the way it is.
“This is a school that deeply values academic outcomes, that offers a genuinely holistic education and embeds a culture of wellbeing”
• I observe the quality of work displayed around the school is always high quality and honours children’s effort and progress.
I could go on as there are many more. These all point to something important, detail matters. It matters because these contribute to the school’s culture.
This is a school that deeply values academic outcomes, that offers a genuinely holistic education and embeds a culture of wellbeing. This is all wrapped in intentional care - care for each other, care for our relationships and care for learning. Our Cognita Framework includes a strategic pillar identifying the importance of leadership in every school. One of our contributors to leadership is ‘A culture that has been intentionally created and managed through trust and empowerment’.
We use the word ‘contributor’ because we see that culture ‘contributes to’ the student experience and outcomes.
Breaside shows how the culture is intentionally managed and nothing is left to chance. It is a school that achieves great outcomes for each child. For sure, this is a result of lots of hard work from the whole team. But we shouldn’t underplay the importance of culture in creating the place that this hard work happens.
For sure, culture is conceptual. But, there are many indicators that culture is absolutely tangible. Nothing happens by chance. It needs intentional nurturing and persistent attention to make sure it is ‘the way we do things around here’ - everyday.
Inspiring & Empowering Girls
Bromley High School celebrates 140 years of educating girls
Earlier this year, leading independent girls school Bromley High School celebrated its 140th birthday. The school was founded on 18th January 1883, one of a wave of pioneering Girls’ Public Day School Trust schools which opened towards the close of the Victorian era. Its founders sought to provide young women with a broad and rigorous academic education far beyond the narrow range of female accomplishments intended to prepare young women for the domestic sphere.
Today, the school’s mission to inspire and empower girls through an exceptional education, has never been more important.
As part of the school’s birthday celebrations, Headmistress Mrs Codling held
a special assembly where, following school tradition, the eldest and youngest pupils (Stevie and Matilda) cut a birthday cake together.
In the assembly, Mrs Codling also launched the school’s exciting programme of 140th anniversary events with past and current pupils, celebrating the school’s rich history and exciting future ahead.
As well as a House Afternoon Tea party and Gala Concert at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music, all pupils will be pledging 140 minutes of their time volunteering in the local community.
Mrs Codling said, “We are immensely proud of our heritage and much of the original cause still guides our mission now; but it is Bromley High School’s readiness to innovate which has seen the school thrive for almost a century and a half.”
To mark the school’s birthday, Junior School pupils dressed up as a prominent figure from the last 140 years. Year 7 pupils formed a human 140 on the school grounds and all pupils were treated to a delicious 140th birthday cupcake.
Happy birthday Bromley High School!

THE NEED FOR HUMANITIES
It won’t take you long to find something in the media to outline the issue that humanities are taking a dip. In recent years, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Guardian and BBC have reported on the declining uptake and prestige of the humanities. However, Hurst College believes that they play a hugely significant role, and their power must not be undervalued.
With worldwide current affairs seeing a rise of right wing and centralised politics in Europe; abortion laws resurfacing in the US; climate, energy and cost of living crises; war and conflict in Europe and beyond; the study of the humanities is ultimately more important now than ever before.
Hurst College created a Humanities Faculty in September 2022, to include the departments of geography, history, religious studies, politics, business, economics, sociology and classical civilisation from Year 6 in the Junior Prep School through to Upper Sixth in the Senior School. A fantastically diverse set of subjects and key stages all working together collaboratively, to share love for the humanities, instil passion and enthusiasm in pupils and make them acutely aware of the world around them.
The role of humanities is a vital one. From Key Stage 2, pupils are taught about a range of cultures, traditions, norms and values, social skills, how to show empathy for others. At a young age they foster justice and equality from humanities teaching. Throughout Key Stage 3 and beyond, pupils learn to deal critically and logically with subjective, complete, imperfect information and
weigh evidence sceptically, to consider more than one side of every question.
Members of the new faculty will structure, linearise and design an effective curriculum which interlinks topics between subjects and key stages. They will effectively outline skills, topic areas and cross-overs which pupils can apply to real life contemporary examples. This allows for scaffolding of the key skills, especially higher order logic and thinking, and improvement of writing styles. Plus, a focus on teaching the harder components of the humanities world - powers of analysis, discursive writing and evaluation skills. The humanities are vital for developing important life skills which pupils can use beyond their school years. It encourages them to debate, challenge ideas, reflect upon their own personal experiences and empathise with those of others who are very different. The faculty also promotes a range of super-curricular options and believes these are vital for preparing pupils for life and society. These include lectures, guest speaker events, workshops and trips.
Ultimately, the goal is to facilitate a love and excitement for the humanities and to show their relevance. Currently, the faculty is buzzingnumbers of pupils opting for these subjects are incredibly high. The robust set of departments are paving the way for creating well-rounded, thoughtful, inquisitive, passionate students who will go on to be successful global citizens in the world beyond school.

Enterprising Sixth Formers Win Benenden’s Business Challenge
The winners of the Six One (Year 13) Enterprise Challenge – in which entrepreneurial Sixth Form students go head to head to create their own profitable business – were recently announced.
Benenden’s Enterprise Challenge sits within the School’s bespoke Professional Skills Programme – a course tailored to equipping Sixth Formers with the skills required to thrive in the workplace. It challenges students to form their own businesses – allocating roles to cover everything from product research and development to finances to marketing – coming up with a profitable product or service that they then deliver to the Benenden community.
The groups are then required to deliver pitches to their peers and teachers, reporting on the processes, profits, ethics and marketing surrounding their business. The four groups deemed the most successful then progress to the Dragons’ Den-style final, where they present their businesses to an impressive panel of specially invited, industry-savvy ‘Dragons’.
This year’s four finalist groups reflect the diversity and ambition of ideas that the Challenge so often brings to the surface. Grow Benenden Grow (selling house plants), BenenDog (dog leads and toys), BeneBites (international snacks), and SpinSpresso (coffee and spin classes) all made it to the final round, where they faced investment banker and Benenden parent Alastair Clarke, International DJ and CEO of Mint DJs Tim Cullen, CEO of
military veterans charity Waterloo Uncovered Mark Evans and Benenden Headmistress Samantha Price.
All four groups gave excellent presentations, and it was clear that a great deal of work had gone into the pitches. The panel were asked to judge the groups based on a number of criteria: the originality of their idea, profitability, their business and marketing plans, and the quality of their pitch.
It was a tough decision, but after much deliberation the BenenDog group were crowned the winners for their business selling BenenDog branded dog leads and rope dog toys. Creating a product aimed at Benenden staff and parents – who are known for their love of dogs – was considered highly original by the judges, who were also impressed by the group’s very professional presentation. The SpinSpresso group came a close second having impressed the judges with their pitch, logo and branding.
Throughout the Enterprise Challenge, the students have demonstrated great commitment to and engagement with the task set. It has given them the opportunity to develop their business skills, while at the same time learning how to work effectively as a team and overcome new challenges. The standard of businesses this year was particularly high, and all the competing teams should be very proud of what they have achieved.

Mayfield Girls engineer a sustainable future
Three Sixth Form girls from Mayfield School have won a national engineering accolade for their plan to reduce carbon emissions and make Mayfield village more sustainable, placing second out of 140 Schools from across the UK in this year’s ICE CityZen Competition.
Budding engineers Megan, Elizabeth and Isabella wanted to come up with a solution to tackle the problem of rising energy costs for the residents, local businesses, and their School in Mayfield. The challenge they faced was how to reduce the energy costs required to heat the historic School and local buildings – many of which are listed - whilst at the same time cutting carbon emissions. The solution? Using geothermal energy, which is renewable, in the form of ground source heat pumps, providing an innovative and non-invasive solution to the problem. The girls’ proposal involved pumps being installed, with excess energy sold to local residents and businesses, improving the sustainability of the village in the process.
CityZen is a UKwide competition in which student teams learn about civil engineering through completing virtual game challenges. They then take the lessons they’ve learned and apply them to their own civil engineering proposal and submit a video entry explaining their idea.
Lower Sixth pupil Elizabeth commented: “Taking part in the ICE CityZen competition was an incredible experience. I was able to gain invaluable skills throughout the competition process as we problem-solved to find solutions to meet the needs of our local community. I am
extremely proud of our achievements, and it was a great honour to go to the ICE headquarters in London last week, where I realised the importance that civil engineers have in shaping our future.”
Mayfield’s Head of Physics, Dr Darragh Corvan, said, “We are delighted Megan, Elizabeth and Isabella have been recognised for their innovative project proposal. At Mayfield, we encourage all our students to pursue their passions and we actively encourage girls to study STEM subjects and pursue careers in engineering, which have traditionally been male dominated. We aim to break the stereotype by providing a range of activities and projects to support the girls’ learning within an environment in which it’s encouraged to experiment and make mistakes, in order to learn and progress. We congratulate the girls on their achievement.”

Tips for parents with children starting secondary school
It’s a new life stage for kids and parents alike, says Claire Spreadbury.
It’s the end of an era when your child leaves primary school. Your life and support network have been intertwined within a community that’s always at the end of the phone – if not a WhatsApp message – but now big school is looming and it’s time to move on.
Some of that network moves on with you, but a lot of it won’t. And discovering the best ways to tackle secondary – and all the difficulties that can come with it – is often tricky. Arm yourself with these tips and you should breeze through.
Get them kitted out with epic new stationery
Smiggle might rule the school at primary, but once they’re 11, Stabilo pens and highlighters are top of the lust list, and Paperchase becomes your go-to. Pencil cases should be sleek and cool, and funky organisers and pads make the whole experience feel fresh.
Label everything
Once they’re starting secondary, everything seems to cost quite a bit more – the fancy stationery, the school bag, the uniform. To avoid pouring all that money down the drain, be sure to label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced. You can buy name stamps which don’t wash out, stickers which genuinely stay put or even grab a good old Sharpie and write on the labels.
Deck them out in cool shoes
When it comes to shoe buying on a budget shop online. And if they’re picky, the likes of Next and
Very let you order several pairs at once, so you can try them all on, return the ones you don’t want and only pay for the ones you do. Oh, and try Kickers. All the cool kids are in them.
Get the tech set-up right
We’ve all learned the hard way that homeschooling on shared tech is somewhat problematic. The good news, however, is live lessons are a breeze at secondary school, especially if they have their own computer. The Honor MagicBook 14 is ultra light and fast with an all-day battery and fast charging, all while minimising blue light by 50%. Google Chromebooks are also a dream, especially as most schools use Google Classroom.
Get to know other parents
When your child makes new friends, it’s much harder to get to know their parents. Lots of kids make their own way to school, and they have a phone to organise their own socials. This can feel a little bit worrying when your son or daughter is talking about going to a sleepover and you’ve never even met the child whose house they are staying at, let alone their mum or dad. Undoubtedly, this will get harder. You will be an embarrassing and interfering parent, so before they reach the Kevin The Teenager stage, try to get parents’ numbers, invite kids to your house, ask their mum or dad in when they come to pick them up – it can really help to reassure you.
Label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced

Elegant Retirement Living
May I introduce myself. My name is Stuart Bennett and I am originally from Worksop in Nottinghamshire.
I am the House Manager of Challoner Court, a retirement home in Bromley owned by Osprey. For the last 24 years, this magical place has been both my home and place of work as I manage the day-to-day operations of the facility. There have been many improvements over the years with more to come, such as the interior designer led refurbishment of the communal areas this year.
My job is to make sure that everything operates as smoothly as possible and to communicate with residents, who see me every day either when I am in my office or walking around the communal areas. I
help them if they have concerns about anything or need advice.
The communal lounge is a great meeting place where I serve refreshments daily in the mornings and afternoons for residents to enjoy. I also arrange for exercise classes and other communal activities take place there, such as supper parties. Challoner Court is a great place to live with a community spirit that you can really feel when you are here. It has wonderful gardens to relax in or for exercise and there is ample car parking within the grounds. There also very good transport links with bus stops outside the building and the nearby Shortlands national railways station, where you can get a train that will take you to Central London in less than 30 minutes. I am lucky to have wonderful neighbours, the residents of Challoner Court, who like to organise evening events and social activities for anyone to take part in if they wish, which promotes the friendly atmosphere here at Challoner Court. If you are thinking of retiring to a nice, quiet and safe environment, take a look at Challoner Court in Bromley. It could be just the place for you, and I would welcome the opportunity to show you what Challoner Court has to offer.

Discover the great outdoors with Cane-Line…
carving out a protected piece of space within its loosely woven walls. A sculptural silhouette creatively crafted from weather-resistant, weave, it’s at once a visual focal point and a shaded, private area to have to yourself. Hang it on a rope to add a meditative swing to stolen moments. Need some extra outside space to host or relax in? When no other areas seem quite right? Fashion a new one in seconds with Cane-Line’s Hyde Parasol, which forms its own living zone
The season of outdoor living is upon us, and as open-air spaces become areas to extend life into, we should make the most of every minute. Renowned outdoor design brand Cane-Line knows the effect fresh air, seeing the sky and – dare we dream it – a flash of sunlight can have on the day, its pieces focused on creating joy, as well as the weatherproof practicalities.
The 2023 Cane-Line collection of designer outdoor furniture doesn’t do conventions. Picture a set of outdoor chairs, an outdoor table, an outdoor sofa. It doesn’t look like that. Every contemporary, boundary-pushing al fresco design is carefully crafted to create daily servings of indulgence, intimacy, satisfaction, smiles, charm, and cheer. Let’s explore the highlights and how they can impact our day-to-day lives.
Self-care is the phrase on everybody’s lips, but so often not at the top of to-do lists. We all need some time to ourselves, to step back and assess, or to put everything to one side and just be. That’s where Cane-Line’s Hive Hanging Chair comes in, an encompassing shape which hugs the sitter,
wherever it travels. Sunny or not, the expansive square canopy is architectural, like an extension of an indoor ceiling, instantly creating a room-like feel, shade, and a sense of seclusion, everywhere it stands.
Taking lounge furniture outside can sometimes feel wrong. That’s what living rooms are for! Think again. Who says outdoor living is only for functional occasions like hosting, eating and cooking. Why not relax al fresco? Take a book, take a cup of tea, take another person and take time out under the sun. It’ll be the highlight of your day.
The Peacock Chair straddles the bridge between indoor and out – pretty and practical, visually like something that belongs inside, but ready to be exposed to the elements. Member of a comprehensive collection of designer outdoor seating, the range’s brutalist grey palette echoes the tones of many buildings’ exteriors (and the occasional sky...), while its curved forms mirror contemporary interior trends, with natural accents pulling them both together. Calming the designer chair’s predominant greyscale tones are teak legs and woven seats made from weather-proof soft rope, which speak of nature and craft tradition, adding an elegant, shouldn’t-that-be-protectedfrom-the-rain edge.
There’s a moment when the evening starts drifting, begins to loosen and unravel. When pudding is finished. When guests begin to float away. When there’s nothing left to do but deeply exhale. It’s a dream-like, gentle time when light has faded but the day’s not come to a proper conclusion. There’s still time for something more.
How to tackle this hazy feeling furniture-wise?
With something similarly undefined, that can change and evolve as well as forming areas that are alluring, easy and oh-so comfortable. Enter the Cane-Line Capture Sofa, which effortlessly harmonises with any backdrop, so the eye
smoothly meanders over its calming curves before the body melts into them. Its rounded corners and integrated tables prompt socialising. Its tonal taupe upholstery and teak details create tranquillity. Its sink-into-me softness is all about snuggling. Finally, say goodbye to limitations with the Choice Chair: a modern interchangeable seating system of different parts, it’s created with flexibility, classic Scandi style, and the environment at its forefront. The pioneering modern chair is based around a seat produced with up to 98% recycled polypropylene, its cover and legs designed to be changed without tools, transforming it from metal sled-based bar stool to teak-legged dining chair. And at the end of its life? Effortlessly recycled.

HALE ELECTRICS LTD
The idea behind Hale Electrics Ltd was to provide a high-quality service for homeowners. Calvin had seen a big decline in the service homeowners were getting from tradesman and decided to break the mould with a professional, high standard of service from highly trained and qualified electricians. Calvin gave them a brand which would be easily recognised, a uniform, the latest tools and sign written vans so our clients would be filled with confidence the moment Hale Electrics arrived at the door.
Calvin changed the way emergency tradesman charged by scrapping ‘call out’ charges, parking charges and many other charges that come our way working in London, they only charge for the time they are working for you. Calvin found being totally transparent about our charges was a great way to install trust and shows they have nothing to hide i.e no hidden charges. We offer a no obligation site survey for any works and a free estimate.
After a humble start nearly 20 years ago in an estate car and a few tools, Calvin is proud to say they have a small fleet of vehicles, a team of fantastic engineers
and office staff which makes the experience smooth and enjoyable for any customer. This is gratefully relayed in our 500+ 5-star reviews. Hale Electrics are nowhere near to reaching their goals as they set out to dive even deeper in the world of renewable energy and energy saving solutions. As electric vehicle charge point specialists and LED lighting upgrade experts they have seen first-hand the savings in energy and money customers are experiencing through their work. Solar panel installations, battery storage and eco heating solutions are all on the horizon for next year.
We work with high quality garden landscapers and can design the LED lighting for any project.
As always, Hale Electrics love to serve their local clients with the latest fuse board upgrades, state of the art LED installations and upgrades, EICR’s and practically anything that has a wire!

HISTORIC EASTERN DESIGN INSPIRES NEW COLLECTION
Hanoi Rose – the latest design from independent tile specialists Porcelain Superstore – ticks all the boxes.
Inspired by the encaustic tiles found throughout Vietnam, Hanoi Rose is – quite simply – pure flooring fantasy.
Charming and elegant, classic yet contemporary, it is a design that would look just as stunning in a period property as a modern new build, putting hallways, bathrooms and kitchens into the design spotlight.
Abbas Youssefi, Director of PorcelainSuperstore, said: “While they might be the newest design to join our collection, these tiles are steeped in history, having been inspired by the stunning flooring found in Vietnam.
“However, unlike their encaustic counterparts, Hanoi Rose has all the benefits of modern manufacturing methods and because they are made from porcelain, are perfect for busy households thanks to minimal maintenance requirements.”
Hanoi Rose Patterned Tiles are available now from porcelainsuperstore.co.uk, priced at £60 per m2.

A WINE LOVERS’ PARADISE
Sometimes what you’re looking for is right under your nose. Take English wines for example; in a short space of time, Britain’s verdant vineyards have become a wine lovers’ paradise – and it’s all on our doorstep.
And if you’re not quite convinced Dorset is the new Douro, with its rolling hills, riverside views and premium wineries, Langham Wine Estate – which is situated in the southern England county – were crowned Sparkling Wine Producer of the Year at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2020, lifting the title from French champagne house, Veuve Clicquot. Winning medals across the range, including gold for their Blanc de Blancs 2015 (£36, Langham Wine), head winemaker Tommy Grimshaw, says: “We’ve had it [the title] for about six months now, so another six months of holding it before we can try and retain it.”
One to watch, Grimshaw is among the youngest viticulturists in the UK – he recently turned 25 – and encourages everyone to consider some English fizz when they want to celebrate. “We’ve these incredibly good quality wines on people’s doorsteps, and now they aren’t

Which of course is what English Wine Week (June 19- 27) is all about, with wineries throwing open their cellar doors with ‘wine-filled’ experiences, summer wine tours, picnics in the vineyard and exciting new releases to celebrate their success.
Wondering where to start? What would be more appropriate than Grimshaw’s current favourite, Langham Pinot Meunier 2018 (£44, Langham Wine), which they’re releasing for English Wine Week. “It’s just incredible. Very well rounded, great structure, nice fruit, some floral notes in there, and really nice and rich for such a young wine. I think it offers everything.” Cheers!

Irresistibly Indian
The Shampan story had very humble beginnings and began with a group of family members wanting to open an intimate Indian restaurant in Chatterton Village, in Bromley, Kent, in 1989.
Taking the establishment’s delicious cooking, it’s warm and friendly environment and convivial service to their hearts. The Bromley restaurant was such a success with locals that in 2002 the owners took another bold step by moving the restaurant to a much larger premises a mere stone’s throw away.
Next to open was Shampan Welling, perched amid a row of shops on a relatively quiet suburban parade known as the The Green in FalconWood, Shampan Welling is the kind of restaurant the very term “hidden gem” was invented for!
Blink and you’ll miss it and yet miss it you can’t, for this multi-award winning Shampan site has garnered itself such a stellar reputation for being the perfect restaurant for a delightful meal that it’s impossible to ignore.
Warm and hospitable, Shampan Welling offers the kind of menu that’s replete with earthy cooking
that offers both the traditional and those craving something modernist whilst at the same time resolutely Indian.
Nestling just outside of the lovely town of Westerham, our Spinning Wheel restaurant is the kind of establishment the very term “destination restaurant” was invented for. Yet, it’s more than just a restaurant, where you can while away the hours chatting to your friends over divinely made cocktails in our comforting lounge, refined Indian cooking and interiors that bring a certain “wow” factor with dining spread across luxurious and airy rooms.
The Caraway Room and Tamarind Room, our main dining rooms, are a delight for customers in which to enjoy their dining amidst bright and vivacious surroundings and beautiful, Italian designed furnishings along with lattice screens that offer a modicum of privacy. A vibrant and cheerful atmosphere is provided by the Tamarind Room, often used by groups and parties, making for a spirited time for all.
All of Shampan’s menus are deceptively simple, yet the dishes are full of flavour and freshly rendered. From traditional items you have so come to love from the Indian repertoire to our house creations, we have won a strong following amongst those who are both new to cooking from the subcontinent and those well-versed, spice connoisseurs.
