Chartwell featured twice in the National Trust’s new book, 100 Curiosities & Inventions.
This beautifully illustrated book brings together a selection of 100 surprising, unusual and intriguing objects from the National Trust’s collections. From forgotten gadgets and humorous gifts to peculiar personal treasures, every object provides unexpected insights into the lives of those who made, owned or used it.
Here at Chartwell, we are delighted to have two objects from the collection highlighted in the book (the panda and the winkle), both selected and researched by Katherine Carter, Property Curator at Chartwell.
In the winter of 1938-9, the arrival of a panda cub called Ming at London Zoo caused a sensation in the British press and Winston Churchill (1874-1965) was invited to meet her. Churchill later remarked that the visit ‘exceeded all my expectations… and they were very high!’
The toy panda at Chartwell was thought to date from that visit but recent research has revealed not only that Churchill owned it prior to Ming’s arrival, but that it was in fact the outer case of a hot-water bottle. His youngest daughter recalled that he had ‘a muchloved panda hot-water bottle cover’.
The original bottle has not survived but the panda continued to be used by Churchill’s secretaries when a book was removed from a shelf, marking the spot to which it should be returned.
The Winkle Club of Hastings was founded in 1900 by the town’s fisherman. To this day, every member is obliged to carry a winkle shell, which they must produce when asked by a fellow member

to ‘winkle up’. Failure to do so results in a fine, with all proceeds going to charity.
In 1955, the year after he retired from his second term as prime minister, Sir Winston Churchill was invited to become a member of the club. He accepted straight away, saying: ‘This is one thing I want to do.’
Traditionally, members of the club carried either a hollow winkle or one filled with wax. Befitting his status as a ‘Distinguished Member’, however, Churchill’s was made from solid gold.

Come rain or shine, there’s plenty to do down on the Kent & East Sussex Railway this half term with some great free activities for families to enjoy.
Kids for a Quid is back!
There’s a welcome return of ‘Kids for A Quid’ travel - available from Saturday 11th to Sunday 19th February (excluding Monday and Friday when there are no trains running) on all services when booking online.
Nature detectives
Once on board, everyone can turn nature detective, taking advantage of a free bird-themed activity sheet to spot the many different species to be seen along the route. Children can also collect a free sticker to reward their detective status!
Representatives from Rye Nature Reserve will be joining departures on Wednesday 15th February (10:20), Thursday 16th (10:20 and 13:00) and Saturday 18th February (10:20), walking through the train chatting to visitors about what birds they are able to see.
As the train wends its way along ten and a half miles of the beautiful Rother Valley - a designated AONB that is considered one of the finest examples of a medieval landscape in Northwest Europe passengers are never far from local waterways. Swelled by the recent prolonged heavy rain, this is a great time to spot and learn more about the diversity of the birds and other wildlife to be found there.
On Saturday 18th February there’s a chance to join the train for Storytime with local children’s author Jeannie Duncanson in the beautifully refurbished 123-year-old Victorian Family Saloon open carriage.
Jeannie will be on board the 11:15 and 14:05 trains from Tenterden and their return services from Bodiam to read from her countryside story book series The Educated Pheasant, about three unlikely friends - Pheasant, Rabbit and Mouse - each with a different attitude to life, embarking on adventures together.
The tales, which are suitable for children from six years upwards, give a modern twist to classic storytelling and bring countryside characters to life, teaching them to cope with a challenging world.
Ms Duncanson, who grew up on a Kent farm, wrote and illustrated the series during lockdown.
The Educated Pheasant and an accompanying Activity Book will be available to purchase in the station gift shop.
As the Family Saloon seats a maximum of 20 people, spaces for these storytelling events are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. In order to maximise the total number of children who can enjoy the sessions, just one adult will be able to accompany their child/children and each party should only travel in the Family Saloon on either the outward or return journey.
Built in 1900 by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway at the Ashford works, the Family Saloon was originally designed for use by wealthy Victorian families intending to travel together to destinations outside the reach of their home railway. In fact, it is the kind of carriage that might have hosted the fictional Grantham family from Downton Abbey on their trips around the country.
The Family Saloon arrived at the K&ESR in 1985 and was a popular attraction on the line for many years. Restoration began in 1992 but was only recently completed by dedicated volunteers. Joining the Half Term services will be its first public appearance in over a decade.
For more information and to book and save on tickets, visit the K&ESR website: kesr.org.uk

The Big Cat Sanctuary’s annual open days are the organisation’s biggest awareness and fundraising event of the year. It is the one time in the year when the Sanctuary opens its gates to the public to welcome families including children of all ages to see some of the most endangered and iconic cats on the planet.
This event is an opportunity for the charity to give an insight into the why they provide welfare and care for big cats living in a facility in the Kent countryside, the conservation initiatives they support around the world as well as the importance of maintaining genetic diversity in some of these critically endangered species.
Guests get to enjoy interactive falconry shows and dog shows. In the demonstration by Animals Saving Animals, an antipoaching dog training organisation, these amazing dogs descend from a 25ft high tower to simulate being deployed from a helicopter before apprehending the decoy amidst smoke and gunshots. It’s an incredible show and brings home just how effective these dogs are
in helping save wildlife. There are keeper talks by our cat team members who explain how they take care of our cats on a dayto-day basis, providing enrichment to keep them stimulated both mentally and physically and how the captive populations are helping to save their cousins in the wild.
In the marketplace, you can browse a range of ethical or sustainable stalls, some representing the wildlife charities we support. Whether you’re looking to take home artwork of your favourite resident cat, branded Big Cat Sanctuary merchandise or try some locally sourced produce, there is something for everyone.
There is a variety of tasty food and drink available including a Garden Bar, BBQ, Street Food, ice creams, sandwiches, chips, cakes and much more. It is a fabulous family day out, timed just as the schools break up for summer.

Tim Lees shares his top picks for the best local restaurants.
Copper Ceylon, has flourished since opening, having recently been crowned “Best Restaurant In The London Suburbs” in the 2022 British curry awards. The restaurant has a dark and warming décor that makes for a cosy and intimate atmosphere when dining. At weekends though, after 10pm, the restaurant takes on a more upbeat tempo with a DJ, fire eaters and belly dancers, for those looking for a truly full night out, the entertainment continues until 2am.
The service was genuinely impeccable, our waiter Vinot was clearly extremely knowledgeable about the cuisine being served and was able to guide us through origins of the dishes.
To begin, .My partner went for garlic chilli prawns, smothered in a pleasantly spiced sauce, that had a pleasant kick without impairing the flavour of the prawns. I started with deep fried Mutton rolls, which are pancakes filled with potatoes, onion mutton then deep fried. And a dish called “Vada” which are essentially savoury donuts. Generally vada are filled with lentils and legumes. These were superb in texture, with a pleasant golden brown, crispness on the outside and a soft delicately spiced interior. I love spicy food so happily doused these in the delicious chilli sauce that they came with.
For mains I opted for a black pork curry, that gets it’s colour from the dark roasted curry powder used in its preparation. The meat succulent in texture. My partner went for a traditional King fish curry in a flavoursome and well balanced coconut sauce. On ordering, Vinot advised that one portion of the savoury rice and a single serving of the delicious paratha would be more than sufficient and would balance well with both dishes.
For dessert I went for a mouth watering slice of Mango cheesecake which was welcomed after the spice of the main dishes. My partner went for one of Copper Ceylon’s signature cocktails “Ravanna” , rum based and flavoured with lime cubes and juice.
Copper Ceylon offers a great selection of wines and beers to compliment your meal, along with a truly extensive range of cocktails. To accompany our dishes we went for a bottle of the Bolitho’s block Marlborough sauvignon blanc, which was Rich in tropical aromas of mango, passion fruit and ripe citrus and was a great compliment to the dishes.

We had a fantastic evening at Copper Ceylon and will certainly be visiting again. In addition to the great service and food, Copper Ceylon have succeeded in that very tricky challenge of providing a great restaurant and entertainment venue under one roof.
Westminster Security is a private security company headquartered in its namesake - Westminster, central London. They were established at the turn of the millennium after recognising a niche and under-catered sector within the private security industry. That was high-end security services for UHNW individuals, private households, company owners, and executives alike.
The private security sector was awash with ‘security companies’ providing basic and lowstandard security guarding services, many being rogue and unlicensed companies run by criminals and protection rackets. Thankfully, those days are long behind us now due in part to the regulation of the Industry by the Home Office and the creation of the Security Industry Authority (SIA).
These days, you will likely find more security companies trying to crack the lucrative ‘highend’ market with their service offerings, yet one name remains consistent at the pinnacle of their
trade and the chosen provider to many securityconscious individuals, families, and businesses.
Having built an excellent reputation and enviable brand image through their high standards, exceptional attention to detail, and excellence. Westminster Security has established itself as the industry leader and the ‘go-to’ company for ‘luxury’ high-end security services.
Their services are based around their core service of close protection, what is that? We hear you say. Well, essentially, its bodyguards, but not as you might envisage them. When we think of bodyguards, we all naturally think of Hulk-like burly men or gun-toting Hollywood hearth-throbs. But the reality is very different.
John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd said “Close protection operatives (bodyguards) come in all shapes and sizes, non are armed in the UK, and female bodyguards are ever more popular with our clients”. John is a veteran of the British Army where he served in the Royal Military Police and specialised in close protection within the Close Protection Unit. So, we believe him.
Other services they provide in support of their close protection operations include highly trained security chauffeurs, residential security guards, surveillance, and VIP event security.

THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN YOUR AREA
As parents, we all want the absolute best for our children, so when it comes to deciding the next steps in their educational journey it is so important that your family is supported with the very best care and guidance in choosing the right Senior school for them.
Here at Breaside, we are dedicated to providing a personalised experience for each of our children, allowing them to thrive and preparing them for their transition into their Senior school of choice. When choosing your child’s future school, it could be easy to become overwhelmed with the many options that are available to you. We ensure that each and every family is supported at every step in what can seem a rather long, winding road, which starts from the moment that your children join us. Knowing and understanding your child is key and we are passionate in developing these relationships right through to Year 6. Having enjoyed travelling alongside them throughout their Breaside journey, we are always so proud when the time does come for our children to fly the nest, whether that be to local independent, grammar or state schools, or somewhere further afield.
The level of care and knowledge that we have at Breaside for each of our children allows us to assist families in shortlisting a selection of schools that will really enable your child to thrive. The relationship that we have built up over many successful years with schools in our surrounding area is very strong and enables us to be in the privileged position of working in partnership with them to highlight not only our children’s academic achievements but also their many other skills and talents as unique individuals. Along this pathway, our Executive Principal, Senior Leaders and teaching team meet regularly with parents and children to discuss their aspirations, and the progress towards these, and ensure that they feel thoroughly supported and content in the knowledge that they have found the school where their child will continue to flourish.
At Breaside, we understand that the transition to Senior school, and all the preceding preparation
“Our varied and inspiring curriculum extends throughout the whole of a Breaside education, from Early Years through to Year 6”
can be a time of anxiety, so we work closely with families to support our children, helping them build the skills and independence they will need to head into assessments, interviews and open days with confidence. Our varied and inspiring curriculum extends throughout the whole of a Breaside education, from Early Years through to Year 6. Thorough preparation for 11+ entrance exams is an integral part of our children’s learning, from our challenging curriculum to timetabled reasoning lessons and taught study skills. In Year 6 this extends into critical thinking, presentation skills, interview practice, scholarship preparation and regular exam practice so that every child is equipped and confident and for their Senior school entrance tests, and beyond.
Each year Breaside hosts a Schools Information Evening for our Year 5 families, where our knowledgeable staff present information on the process of applying for schools, key dates and important documents to support that process, and those very important deadlines for 11+ application! This evening also gives both children and their parents the chance to meet Headteachers and staff from a range of Senior schools and, most importantly, Breaside alumni, giving them the chance to hear first-hand their own inspiring experiences of moving on into Year 7.
Post 11+, our Year 6 children enjoy a dynamic and enriched programme of activities once all their entrance exams are finally behind them. Designed to enable the transition into Year 7 to be as smooth
as possible, but also designed for a lot of fun, the schedule includes cultural visits and exhibitions, team building experiences, sports leadership, entrepreneurship and, of course, visits from our ex-Breaside pupils who come and share all of the wonderful things that they have been up to since moving on to their new schools. The pinnacle of this post 11+ programme is always the annual residential trip where our Year 6 children develop independence and key life skills that will support them not only for this transition to secondary school but for life as well rounded individuals who are now ready for the wider world.
Every year, we are so proud of our Year 6 cohort and their excellent destination school results speak for themselves. These results reflect their hard work, passion and enthusiasm for learning. They also reflect our entire school community and its dedication to supporting our pupils in achieving their very best throughout their time at Breaside.
For further information about our destination schools please see our school website www.breaside.co.uk
In “Imagine If”, Sir Ken Robinson says, “As educators, our role is to create the conditions for growth, development, and learning to happen. When we get it right, we discover that all along we have been in the miracle business, and it is honestly the only business to be in.” At Hazelwood, we love being in the miracle business!
For us, this is about opening our children’s minds through building curiosity, opening their hearts by teaching compassion and fostering courage in how they use their learning. We enable our children to thrive in an increasingly complex and unpredictable world and become change makers.
To achieve optimum conditions, we incorporate real life into our curriculum. Here, our pupils benefit from real-life experiences in which they can engage with real people, issues, relationships, contexts and audiences, and explore relevant problems that call for real explanations, solutions or innovations.
As Head, this ethos often requires bold decisions: introducing a collapsed timetable for Years 7 and 8 ‘Electives’ on Fridays is just one example of this approach. Here, these pupils choose and experience a range of non-curriculum based topics including robotics, community outreach, graphic design or forensic science, to name a few. As educators, we have a powerful role to play in building the foundations for children to gain the skills needed for the future. A solid set of academic exam results is no longer enough; soft skills play an enormous part in moulding children’s futures, which starts in prep education.
“Our teaching approach at Hazelwood is paving the way for our children to thrive in a changing landscape”
Our recent Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) project is an example of our approach to teaching and learning, during which our pupils put their academic knowledge to use through a contemporary, creative lens. For some, this involved using maths to compile a budget or business plan, others used science to create prototypes, English to communicate effectively and art to design marketing materials.
Our entire School, from Reception to Year 8, studied the 17 SDGs over a nine-week period and were asked to create collaborative solutions to these global real-world challenges. They had to research their topic and understand the various viewpoints, assign roles, propose, test, and design potential solutions, and develop a prototype or action plan for change.
The results amazed us and our expert judges. One of the most compelling presentations was from a Year 5 class, which focused on goal 6: clean water and sanitation for all. They researched, designed and developed, in partnership with a local business, a shower pressure plate, which will save its users water and money. The project did not stop there; the pupils’ hard work resulted in a working prototype, which is in the process of being developed further. Pupils have experienced first-hand how their efforts can help create change.

This SDG project would not have been possible had our pupils not had the opportunity to learn in our innovation hub, ‘The BOX’. This flexible, agile learning space inspires and aids dynamic teaching and learning, where we embrace digital literacy of the future alongside vital complex creativity.
With no rules regarding how to teach or learn, it promotes creativity and collaboration. Furniture used has been designed to enable children to configure the space easily for any purpose; every surface can be utilised or written on. With no teacher’s desk and no fixed furniture, it heralds a way of learning that is full of investigative possibilities. To enhance their digital literacy skills and prepare them for the future, children are equipped with a diverse range of learning tools, such as VR goggles,
a Lego wall, graphic design tools, interactive projection, green screen technology, and robotics equipment.
The BOX speaks the pupils’ language, giving them boldness to go in a different direction, allowing scope to explore beyond the teacher’s initial brief. It unlocks potential and complex creativity beyond traditional learning methods.
Our teaching approach at Hazelwood is paving the way for our children to thrive in a changing landscape, which will generate surprising and exciting outcomes, not only while at Hazelwood but also in the future as tomorrow’s leaders and innovators. It really is about reimagining education and creating conditions where miracles can happen.
“For us, this is about opening our children’s minds through building curiosity, opening their hearts by teaching compassion and fostering courage in how they use their learning”
At Bickley Park, your son will benefit from a specialist boys’ education which harnesses their natural curiosity and enthusiasm and ensures full engagement in a curriculum, which is designed to be fun, motivating and challenging.
This year Bickley Park is launching an exciting new outdoor education programme together with Polaris Outdoor, to foster team and leadership skills, whilst developing independence and the ability to manage risk. Adventure School will see all boys in Years 3 to 8 taking part in residential trips which will focus on progressively demanding survival skills and challenges. From camping in the Peak District and the South Downs to a Kayaking adventure along the Cornish Coast, the trips promise to be fun, exciting and motivational.
Our younger boys in Reception to Year 2 also take part in regular Forest School sessions in local woodland which develops understanding and respect for the natural world.
Building resilience, teamwork and leadership skills is essential, as is teaching pupils how to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life and to respect inclusiveness. Boys improve in behaviour, concentration and academic performance when their learning environment is shaped to their needs. Outcome focused learning impacts positively on boys’ motivation to achieve.
Jon Poole, acting Head said: “We find that building
solid and collaborative relationships is essential to success. We ensure that the boys have strong role models and mentors, both male and female, who provide the right level of discipline, encouragement and guidance. Forest School and Adventure School are great ways of establishing these frameworks to learn.”
Fantastic facilities across the school also allow children from Reception through to the Senior Years to develop and excel. From the purpose-built science labs, in the Prep Department, through to the climbing wall, swimming pool, astro-turf pitches, tennis courts and the theatre, the school provides a breadth of opportunities in both lessons and after school. Events, such as public speaking and general knowledge competitions, music performances and school productions, together with Adventure School all foster enthusiasm for taking part and embracing personal challenge.
Our boys leave us confident, respectful, articulate young men, ready to take on the next steps in their education.

Pavel Malik, Assistant Head & Director of Digital Learning at Radnor House Sevenoaks, explains why five-year-olds should learn to code.
Coding and Robotics may not be the first subjects that come to mind when thinking about the school curriculum, however, in our increasingly digital world, we believe it is important to nurture these skills early on and have invested in a new computing suite for the Prep School.
While reading, writing, and counting are usually considered pre-requisites for coding, we have created a programme of study to teach children IT at the same time as literacy and numeracy. It also enhances learning across the wider curriculum, as computational thinking supports scientific study, research and communication skills.
In Reception, we try to avoid touchscreen devices so that pupils can practice fine motor skills. Our focus is on robotics, using block coding instructions in Year 1 and progressing to text-based coding in Python in Year 5. As a result, these students are often far more advanced at handling technology than their peers.
Technology helps us to give mathematical concepts real world applications. Building apps and games gives algorithms, sequencing, and logic a practical use, which engages children who usually struggle to enjoy maths. As the government proposes making mathematics compulsory to 18, technology could prove a useful bridge for building confidence and sustaining enthusiasm for a subject that is traditionally reserved for specialists.
The jobs market is suffering from a digital skills gap. Both the public and private sector highly prize these skills, seeing them as necessary for progress and economic growth, which, in turn, boosts employment prospects for technology specialists. By investing in skills from a young age and continuing this support throughout the school, we are equipping students for global workplace success and hope to inspire more under-represented groups to pursue careers in technology.

Six girls from Mayfield School recently attended the 7th Annual Model United Nations (MUN) Conference in Poland, along with pupils from across Europe.
MUN is an educational simulation of the actual United Nations in which students can learn about diplomacy and international relations. The Mayfield girls attended as delegates for Russia, Iran, Canada, the USA, DPRK and Nigeria, sitting on committees for Human Rights, UN Women, and the Future Security Council – the latter set in 2050 amidst concerns about overpopulation.
The girls stayed with host families and had a great time experiencing Polish culture in their downtime following heated debate about global issues during the day. Torun, where the conference was held, is a UNESCO world heritage site and the girls had an opportunity for sightseeing, including a culinary exploration of Torun’s legendary gingerbread.
Sixth Former Cosima finished the conference as Best Delegate on the Human Rights Committee, while Rosie was voted Best Delegate in the General Assembly. Rosie said: “It was the people that made ToMUN 2022 so memorable. Words fail to describe the exhilaration I felt being surrounded by so many enthusiastic and intellectual people who share my
passions for politics, international relations, and debate. The beautiful city of Torun was packed with culture which made for idyllic evenings with my friends after a long day of debate.”
The Old Palace, Mayfield, East Sussex, TN20 6PH T: 01435 874600 E: enquiry@mayfieldgirls.org www.mayfieldgirls.org
Mrs Kasia Kilvington, MUN lead at Mayfield, said: “MUN has quite literally transformed the lives of some of the girls at Mayfield. The role play element has enabled pupils who never believed they could speak in public to stand up and do just that. They have found a group of similar minded peers, passionate about current affairs and finding solutions to global issues. They have learned about countries and problems that they never even knew existed. It has made them keen researchers and critical thinkers, having to scrutinise nuance in the delicate wording of resolutions, and given them immense confidence, both personally and academically.”
The first years of secondary education are crucial; pupils should thrive in an environment where they feel inspired, nurtured and respected.
The Prep is the perfect place for this to happen. We welcome new students in Year 7 who join our existing pupils to complete an exciting and challenging academic curriculum.
The academic curriculum stimulates our pupils, preparing them for entrance examinations and scholarships. They are taught by specialist secondary-trained teachers in a broad range of subjects and whilst our main feeder schools are Sevenoaks and Tonbridge, our pupils go on to attend a variety of independent secondary schools, both locally and nationally, at 13+. Competitive sport continues to be played each week as we believe that sport strengthens character and community spirit.
Pupils are offered opportunities for responsibilities and leadership which enable them to move on in life with confidence as well as self-reliance. They wear a different colour blazer to the rest of the school to highlight the important role they have and our Year 8 prefects help us run the school.
Pupils are given the opportunity to reinforce
their classroom learning with regular trips and our post exam schedule of activities is diverse and rewarding. Pupils learn about the benefits of their own contributions to a team, while having fun and celebrating the friendships and skills that The Prep has helped to develop.
Confidence and Personal Development
Years 7 and 8 are a period of physical and emotional change; it is a sensitive time and pupils benefit from personal development in a secure environment. Small class sizes and every teacher knowing every child extremely well is key to ensuring that our pupils feel supported and known.
We want our pupils to leave us as individuals who are confident in their own abilities, who cherish friendships, welcome responsibility, understand their place in community and who know the value of teamwork. One only has to look at the accomplishments of our former pupils to know that we achieve our aims.

As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
•Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting
•It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly
•Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.
•Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally
•Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.
•How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?
•Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?
•Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure)
•What are the classroom sizes?
•What is expected of my child with regard to homework?
•Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?
•Is there a bullying policy?
•What lunchtime meals are available?
•What sports and music facilities are available?
•What after school clubs and trips are available?
•How many pupils branch out into further education?
After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.
“The minute we are born, the world around us provides surroundings to explore and discoveries to make. Children are innately curious, beginning their early lives questioning. The ever-present, “Why?” is a word uttered with a compelling conviction that to most adults can be staggering in frequency.
At Sydenham High Prep School, we want our pupils to always remain that curious and enthused about their learning every day.
Our singular vision for excellence is built upon the core foundations of an aspirational, creative critical thinking and innovative learning environment that allows pupils to experience the joy of learning first hand. When children are filled with a love for learning, they develop resilience, compassion for the world around them, curiosity, and communication skills. The joy of learning bubbles in the classrooms of Sydenham High Prep School every day.
Enthusiasm permeates debates and discussions, whilst our teachers provide ambitious learning challenges for pupils and often hands-on activities to better visualise and understand specific subjects. Offering choices through challenges, encourages
pupils to look deeper to open up their own initial ideas. Play and imagination is encouraged at all ages, seeing the girls develop their learning together through spirited, active discourse.
Recently, a STEAM day themed ‘Mission to the Moon’ marked the Artemis missions and 50 years since astronauts stepped on the moon’s surface. A team of stellar scientists from Years 5 & 6 led assembly and demonstrated their passion for learning. The fascination and wonder of the moon inspired the STEAM activities and experiments across every year group from Reception upwards.
Pupils tested and trialled their innovative ideas using robotics and questioned each other with purpose and conviction. Enrichment opportunities such as these, expose pupils to interesting topics and offer a chance to learn new skills through practical, active learning. Whether it’s debating, coding, skateboarding, zendoodling, micro-bit development, or fencing, teachers and pupils play and learn together throughout the enrichment of the ‘everyday’. Whilst children have a natural propensity for curiosity, there can be no doubt on the impact that we, as parents and educators, have on fostering a lifelong love of learning.

Hurst College has grown and developed significantly over the past 15 years. It has doubled in size, become one of the leading independent schools in the south east academically and strengthened co-curricular engagement. There has also been a shift away from full boarding to weekly and flexi boarding and a move to an equal split between boys and girls.
Over the last three years, the Senior Leadership Team and the governors have been considering the best structure for the college - influenced by the shifting landscape in which the school operates and the way in which education has developed nationally. The decision was taken a year ago to reshape the college structure to reflect the shift towards an 11 to 16 educational curriculum and the way in which children grow up faster now than in the past. Hurst has introduced a Junior Prep (Reception to Year 6), echoing the maintained sector, with a separate Senior Prep (Year 7 and Year 8) focusing on these interesting developmental years.
A pioneering initiative, known as the Hurst Education Trust (HET), has also been developed. This initiative has been driven by a desire to do the right thing by integrating Hurst with a local group of schools - to benefit pupils and staff in the college and the HET schools. There are already three primary schools in the trust, and this will grow in a considered manner to include a secondary school.
The leadership structure has also evolved. Tim Manly has become Principal, responsible for the strategic direction of the College as well as CEO and leader of the HET. Dominic Mott, previously Head of the Senior School, has become Head of College and taken on the day-to-day responsibilities. He is succeeded by Lloyd Dannatt who was Deputy Head Academic. Lloyd has been key in developing the successful linearisation of academic programmes across the entire college. His role has been taken on by Michelle Zeidler who also acts as Director of Education for the HET.
These changes will enable the college to cater for the needs and ambitions of each school section - with a shared set of values and ethos. Although many changes have been introduced, and came fully into play in September, the transition has been carefully planned. The ethos will remain the same, and whilst continuing to develop strongly, the college will stay close to its vision and values, enabling pupils to achieve the best they can according to their ability - at the college and in the Hurst Education Trust..

It is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world – and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers alongside Paris, Milan and New York. It presents an unrivalled opportunity to showcase some of the world’s leading fashion talent and the best and brightest names in the industry.
While many of us are already planning our Spring wardrobe, designers at London Fashion Week will be showcasing their Autumn/ Winter 2023 Collections - both menswear and womenswear, as a hybrid digital and physical event.
It is a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends - whether colourful, crazy or controversial - the world is watching as fashion history is made.
A provisional schedule for London Fashion Week has been announced and so far, it sees the return of over 100 emerging and established
designers. Brands set to return include iconic British luxury brand Burberry, who will be presenting their first collection under the new creative direction of Daniel Lee. Also, DAVID KOMA, JW Anderson, Emilia Wickstead, Roksanda, Christopher Kane, Simone Rocha, Erdem, Julien Macdonald and Halpern.
The BFC has announced an exciting line-up of events and activations to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its internationally celebrated BFC NEWGEN initiative. BFC NEWGEN is the most established designer development scheme globally, set up by the BFC to enable a group of designers, including the late Lee Alexander McQueen, to showcase their collections at London Fashion Week in 1993. The year-long celebration will kick off at LFW February 2023 and will provide an opportunity for the creative community to come together to celebrate and acknowledge the scheme’s illustrious history and alumni, and London’s legacy in nurturing emerging talent and the next generation of visionary creatives.

Innovators in later life care, KYN, will be launching a brand-new care home in Bromley in February 2023. One standout feature will be its sensory garden – designed to help residents boost their wellbeing, and even inspire reminiscence of memories and sensations for those living with dementia.
Gardens are special spaces. They can improve our wellbeing in many ways, helping us feel calm or giving a sense of purpose.
KYN is harnessing the power of plants with the launch of its first care home, KYN BICKLEY, in Bromley next month.
As part of its pioneering approach to care, KYN commissioned Andy Pringle from LUC, an awardwinning environmental consultancy, to design a unique sensory garden to improve residents’ physical and emotional health, and enrich the lives of those living with dementia.
Set in two acres of landscaped gardens, KYN BICKLEY features a games lawn, orchard, tranquillity garden, two terraces, and a vegetable and fruit patch. An apothecary’s garden (also known as a physic garden), a form of garden where healing herbs and plants are grown, has also been incorporated to boost physical and emotional health, as well as mood and cognitive health.
The terraces and herbaceous borders reflect KYN’s architectural style, while winding pathways framed by pergolas lead residents to the sensory garden and orchard. Routes around the garden are circular in nature and are designed to encompass a broad variety of experiences with heightened sensory features and
lots of light, textures, colours, sights, scents and sounds to create a tranquil atmosphere. Pringle explains: “The garden is designed to appeal to all the senses. Colours are seasonal, placed for maximum contrast, or grouped in clusters. Energising hues are carefully balanced with oak garden furniture features with a natural finish, to avoid overstimulation that can cause distress to those living with dementia.
“As well as the soothing sounds of nature; bees buzzing, birds singing, the wind rustling through plants, the LUC team has chosen plants with evocative smells such as thyme, rosemary and jasmine.”
To encourage outdoor activities for residents, KYN BICKLEY offers a range of relaxing sensory experiences for those with a passion for gardening. Elevated pots and flower beds enable easier access for keen gardeners who may have limited dexterity and mobility.

Even from a purely aesthetic point of view, water features are a simple yet guaranteed way to add style and individuality to any swimming pool. Water features can come in many shapes and forms; waterfalls, fountains, massage jets or spas and can be customised to fit any taste and budget. They can easily be controlled by a variety of methods and with the help of Origin’s experts, you can create an environment that provides a unique and personalised swimming experience, which is not only beautiful but functional too.
This is an increasingly popular trend in home swimming pool design. These pools are designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding outdoor environment, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of an indoor pool while still feeling connected to the outdoors. ‘Best of both worlds’ pools typically feature large windows or bi-folding doors that can be opened to their full extent, letting natural light and fresh air flood the pool house. This simple design allows you to bring the outside in and swim in the comfort of your own home while still enjoying the natural beauty of your surroundings.
Swim jets are a great way to maximise the functionality of an indoor swimming pool, particularly in smaller spaces. They can be installed in the pool and their powerful jets of water create a current for you to swim against, allowing for a
more intense workout and providing an innovative way to swim ‘virtual laps’ in a smaller space. The strength of the swim jets can also generate a massaging effect, adding to the relaxing sensation of being in the water, releasing endorphins and combating stress.
When it comes to indoor swimming pool design, muted colour palettes are taking over. The neutral or subdued shades help create a serene and peaceful atmosphere, making the pool area a relaxing and inviting space. The minimalistic, ‘scandi’ design choice is great for indoor swimming pools as it can be easily paired with contemporary or traditional style, and create a sophisticated and elegant look. Creating a cohesive design in any space can be tough, however, muted colours can be the perfect backdrop for a pool house, allowing the pool itself to be the focal point.
Do you have a favourite holiday destination? If neutral shades aren’t your style, perhaps you’d prefer to incorporate some exotic and holidayinspired elements into your indoor swimming pool design. Elements such as mosaics, lush greenery and natural stone can be used to create a fun and inviting atmosphere taking inspiration from all over the globe. Design components like lighting and water features can also showcase your exotic inspiration and lend themselves to the overall feel of your swimming pool design. Looking abroad for your design influence is a great way to create a unique and personalised swimming experience for the whole family and ensure you never have the holiday blues again.

There are some furniture designs that seem to belong to both the past and the future, that wouldn’t look out of place in the home of your grandparent or grandchild, that give no clue to when they were designed by the way they look –are they a recent Barber and Osgerby triumph, or a classic Gio Ponti number?
Really, it’s thanks to the Modernist movement which began its climb to dominance in the early 1900s, properly getting going post World War II when contemporary designers turned their backs on the ornate classical furniture of their forbears, instead looking to tone things down and shake things up. As Le Corbusier put it; ‘A great epoch has begun. There exists a new spirit.’
Out went Art Deco, Neoclassical and Victorian styles – no more dark carved woods, gilded carpentry or rich patterns – and in came the shiny and new. Pared-back forms, a focus on function over style and visual lightness, all gloriously massproduced with gleaming new technologies, were

finally available and affordable(ish) to all.
Design icons rained down. Furniture took on sculptural, minimal forms as hallowed architects began producing smaller objects to fill their projects, and names such as Eames, Wegner, Castiglioni and Breuer were sanctified in the furniture hall of fame.
Jump forward to the present day, and the tubular steel is gleaming just as brightly as it did 70, 80, 90, 100 years ago, and those alluring curves look like they just fell out of the pages of a contemporary design magazine. Traversing the decades is no easy feat, yet several key 20th-century pieces of furniture have made the leap with ease, their utter minimalism protecting them from the ravages of time and blending them in so well with the present-day, it’s hard to tell what new and what’s a revered design icon.
We all know the bonafide classics – the Wishbone chairs, the Tulip tables, the Eames loungers – so let’s discover those (slightly) more under-the-radar pieces that have made it through the years thanks to their brilliantly time-proof aesthetic.
Designed by Hungarian modernist architect Marcel Breuer in 1925, it’s hard to believe the gleaming shapely form of the Wassily lounge chair, now produced by Knoll, is hovering around its hundredth birthday!
Designed between 1927-31 for Louis Poulsen, when the first prototype of the PH Septima light was presented at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art, the crowd broke into spontaneous applause.
With sculptural curves slotting it into modernday sensibilities and the ongoing trend for all things round, the S 533 chair by leading GermanAmerican modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe defies the rules of time.
Poul Kjærholm piece, the seat is also referred to as the Hammock Chair to highlight its function of suspending the body between two points.
Snoopy lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, 1967
A 1960s child in more ways than one, the Snoopy lamp by Italian architect and designer brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni was created in 1967, taking its shape from the loveable illustrative dog from the cartoon strip Peanuts which was at its peak at the time.
La Chaise by Charles & Ray Eames, 1948
The Dali-esque La Chaise by lauded American industrial designers Charles & Ray Eames was inspired by the Floating Figure sculpture by French artist Gaston Lachaise. A conceptual, freeform design on which the user could either recline or sit up straight on, the daybed is an icon of organic design.
CH07 Shell Lounge Chair by Hans J. Wegner, 1963
A new type of shell chair with three legs, no armrests and a deep recline, the CH07 Shell Lounge Chair was created by ‘master of chairs’ Danish architect Hans J. Wegner in 1963, its organically curving seat gaining it the nickname of ‘the smiling chair’.
Haller storage by Fritz Haller, 1965
Purposefully designed to be time-proof, Haller storage was designed by Swiss architect Fritz Haller for Swiss brand USM in 1965 and has had a place in New York’s Museum of Modern Art since 2001.

A foldaway worktop for extra prep space
When additional preparation space or extra room for guests is needed, a practical foldaway worktop offers 57cm more surface area in an instant.
A unit for the extractor hood
Make use of every inch with storage concealed either side of the extractor hood. Available in 60cm, 90cm and 120cm versions to suit every space, it’s perfect for keeping dried herbs and spices within easy reach of the hob when cooking.
Dedicated drawer organisers
For drawers and internal pull-outs, Latitude’s modular elements can be adapted to suit every need, and to the nearest millimetre too. Perfect for herbs and spices, utensils, cutlery, knives and more, it’s ideal if installed beneath the hob.
Internal deep drawer for cleaning products
Keep cleaning items, bin bags, buckets, brushes and more close to hand in an easy-access under-sink unit with deep storage for larger pieces.
A bespoke worktop unit, perfect for breakfast
There’s no waste of space with this bespoke worktop unit, which comes with a handy slide-out shelf to serve breakfast.
Store dried ingredients, packets, bottles, boxes and tall items in this full-height larder, which can hold two weeks’ worth of groceries for a family of four in one go. Its huge capacity enables cooks to leave other cabinets free for other items.
Schmidt base units come with six drawers rather than the usual five. This allows for a straight-lined symmetrical look, combining two or three drawers to allow for deeper storage. Cabinets are also made to measure to the nearest millimetre, avoiding the use of unnecessary fillers and wasting space. With higher, deeper, wider units, the maximisation of storage is fully achieved – up to 26%. As can be seen in the photo below this means a double row of full-sized dinner plates fit into one drawer.
