ORPINGTON
GOING ELECTRIC HAS BEEN MADE EVEN EASIER WITH THE NEW E:NY1
Your heart is precious, and so are your memories ‘A long-awaited positive step.’ Make your legacy unforgettable as promising findings offer hope to thousands. Who could forget the choices, events, surprises and happenstances that brought you to this very moment in time? Those pivotal cogs that set the wheel of life in motion and often only make sense in retrospect. In truth, any of us could. So, news of, “a long-awaited positive step,” in keeping those precious memories alive, funded by the generosity of British Heart Foundation (BHF) supporters, is just as remarkable as it sounds. This promising research is only in its infancy and your legacy could be that one decision that helps change the course of scientific history – for countless people around the world.
Every five minutes, someone in the UK has a stroke. That’s as long as it takes to boil a kettle, to read these two pages, or to make a decision that could change the course of history. At British Heart Foundation we’re powering vital research to find new treatments for strokes including lacunar strokes – which are linked with nearly half of all dementias and account for more than one in five strokes in the UK.
Empty spaces Lacunar strokes affect the small blood vessels – less than a millimetre wide – deep inside the brain. They were first named in the 1950s, when ‘lacunae’, or empty spaces, were spotted in the brain of those affected from them. Sometimes described as ‘small’ strokes, they can happen without the patient noticing. The more they happen, the more likely you are to develop problems with thinking or even dementia. This can be combined with mood disorders, depression or balance issues.
“For a long time, people thought all strokes were due to blood clots or blood vessels bursting,” says Professor Joanna Wardlaw. “Only recently have we realised there is a set of strokes caused by problems with small blood vessels. These milder strokes have literally gone under the radar,” she explains.
Professor Wardlaw is an expert in brain scanning and her internationally recognised research focuses on trying to prevent, diagnose and treat stroke more effectively. This includes a recent trial, funded by British Heart Foundation, which found that lacunar strokes could be treated for the first time by repurposing two existing drugs that are already being used to treat other conditions. These findings are a vital step closer towards improving the lives of the more than 25,000 individuals a year affected by this form of stroke, in the UK alone. This invaluable research provides a ray of hope to not only them, but their nearest and dearest too – as it strives to keep precious thoughts and memories alive.
Slowing the tide is just the beginning The trial, led by the Universities of Edinburgh and Nottingham, involved 363 people who had experienced a lacunar stroke. As well as their standard stroke prevention treatment, for one year participants took either isosorbide mononitrate or cilostazol individually, both drugs together, or neither. A year after the trial, participants that took both drugs were nearly 20% less likely to have problems with their thinking and memory compared to the group that did not take either drug. If these findings aren’t powerful enough, it was also found that these participants were also more independent and reported a better quality of life. Researchers hope that if the results are confirmed in further trials, the two drugs could be available as a treatment for lacunar strokes within five years.
Let your legacy change the course of history for the better Gifts in Wills from our donors fund over half of the research supported by BHF, research that has helped lower UK death rates from heart and circulatory diseases by 75% since the charity’s inception in the 1960s. Your contribution can be a part of something huge, leaving a legacy that will be an essential cog in the wheel of fighting conditions like lacunar strokes and vascular dementia. Together, we can fuel visionary research that will bring hope to future generations and keep memories alive.* Once your loved ones are taken care of, you could leave a gift too. It’s a quiet act that makes the biggest difference. * The research referenced was also supported by the UK Dementia Research Institute.
If you’d like to leave a gift that could save lives, go to bhf.org.uk/mylegacy
These findings may help far beyond treatment, as Professor Wardlaw says there’s a chance that further research could indicate the drugs’ usefulness in prevention too.
“If it works in people who have had symptoms, it seems plausible it could work in people who haven’t had symptoms but are at high risk, perhaps due to family history,” says Professor Wardlaw. “It might be that you could use it as a treatment for people who haven’t had a stroke yet.” This major step forward is only the beginning and with your help – the best is yet to come.

Winston’s Spectacular Cakes at Chartwell A special photography display featuring newly colourised images is opening at Chartwell, the family home of Sir Winston Churchill, this winter.
‘W
inston’s Spectacular Cakes’ will kick off Churchill’s 150th birthday year, with a series of hand-selected archive photographs showcasing some of the most spectacular birthday cakes Churchill received in his lifetime. After the Second World War (1939 - 1945), Churchill’s birthday became a moment of great interest for both the press and the public. Photographers would descend on his home to see the cakes, each of which were designed to showcase his career, achievements and interests in sponge and icing. Historic photographs from TopFoto have been colourised especially for the display. They vividly tell the story of Churchill’s birthdays and enable visitors to get a true sense of the creativity and flair of the baking. From the late-1950s, interest had grown to the extent that there was a special photo opportunity for press to take snaps of the cakes at the bakery, before they were dispatched ready to take centre stage on the big day. The press frenzy around Churchill’s cakes made a celebrity of Maria Floris, the Hungarian pastry chef who had moved from Budapest to London and opened her Soho bakery in 1937. Maria became the preferred baker of the Royal Family and high society, but it was always her ‘masterpieces’ for Winston Churchill of which she was most proud. Katherine Carter, Chartwell’s Curator said: “Our new display shows the wonderful array of cakes

inspired by Churchill’s interests and achievements. They were a forerunner to our love of extravagant and themed bakes today.” ‘Winston’s Spectacular Cakes’ – mirroring the initials of Winston Spencer Churchill – will consist of display panels on the fully accessible Terrace Lawn, overlooking Chartwell’s beautiful gardens and the Weald of Kent. Katherine explained: “Colourised photographs are a wonderful way to bring the past to life for audiences of all ages. It’s quite rare to see images from Churchill’s life and career in colour, especially those that record more personal, light-hearted moments. The theme of this display is fun and playful, and we wanted to reflect this by giving our visitors a true sense of the occasion through the colours of the bakes and celebrations they inspired. “In vivid colour, they are a fascinating portal to lesser-known moments of social history,
“It’s quite rare to see images from Churchill’s life and career in colour, especially those that record more personal, lighthearted moments”
bringing out details of the cakes and people involved in a new way.” A cake covered with golden roses celebrates Winston and his wife Clementine’s golden wedding anniversary. Other baking creations include a showstopper dedicated to horses. Churchill’s 80th birthday cake, which weighed more than 100lbs and was decorated with 80 candles, is another highlight. It was so large that the width of Downing Street’s doors had to be checked to make sure it could go through. Many of his cakes paid homage to his love of nature and animals, with butterflies, cats and his chocolate-coloured poodle all recreated in cake form. Heartwarming photographs show the people behind the annual tradition. From Maria Floris beaming with pride, to the staff manoeuvring magnificent creations around Chartwell, Downing Street or Churchill’s London home at Hyde Park Gate, the images bring the excitement to life. Tom Marshall from PhotograFix, who colourised the photographs for the National Trust, explained how he came to choose the colours used. “The process is carried out digitally, using Adobe Photoshop, and each photo took between two and four hours to complete, painting digital colour layers over the monochrome photos. The shades of grey in the original photo determine how dark
each colour should be, but not the colour itself, so the process is a combination of research and artistic licence. “When researching this project, I watched a lot of archive news footage, as most of Sir Winston Churchill’s birthdays were well documented in the newsreels of the day. While these newsreels were in black and white, they did give me more angles of the cake decorations to work with and showed some details and context not initially obvious when viewing the black and white photos.” ‘Winston’s Spectacular Cakes’ is on display from 13 January to 25 February 2024, 10am to 4pm, at Chartwell and is included with normal admission. A Re-discovered work by the Victorian painter Sir Edwin Henry Landseer is set to be auctioned this month. Rachael Osborn-Howard, Founder of Curated Auctions tells us about some important works of art that will be auctioned on 18th January.
W
e are delighted to present a painting by the renowned Victorian painter Sir Edwin Henry Landseer for auction this month. Landseer is perhaps most famous for his lion sculptures at the base of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, but he also produced some of the most well known and popular paintings of animals during this period, such as ‘The Monarch of the Glen’. When offering a painting by an important master of this calibre, the work needs to be authenticated by an expert on the painter, and the provenance needs to be traced. In this case the painting has been identified at the same one that was sold in the Christies’ sale of Landseer’s studio of 8th - 15th May, 1874; where It was sold for £57.15, a huge sum at that time. It was offered at auction again in 1933, where it realised eight guineas. It was subsequently in the collection at Lyneham House which was bought by Peter Cadbury, before being purchased by the current owner. In the same auction we have two rare early 19th century marble sculptures by the two masters of Neo-Classicism. The first is a marble bust of Napoleon Bonaparte’s sister Pauline, unsigned but probably from the workshop of the famous sculptor, Antonio Canova. We can tell that the bust is early 19th century due to the style of carving and the exceptional quality of the Carrara marble used; and it would have been made as a special commission by an associate or supporter of Napoleon. The second marble is very fitting for this time of year, depicting a classical allegorical scene of Winter. The theme of Winter is represented through the ancient story of Anacreon and Cupid 28 JANUARY 2024
which tells of the poet who rescues Cupid from a storm and warms him by the fire. This sculpture has provenance going back to the Guinness family (who made their fortune from the stout drink) and was in their mansion at Elveden. These any many other rare and important works of art can be viewed online in the catalogue at www.curatedauctions.co.uk, or come and visit our gallery near Chislehurst.

Inspiring Boys at Bickley Park A quality education with adventure at its heart
A
t Bickley Park, your son will benefit from a specialist boys’ education which harnesses their natural curiosity and enthusiasm and ensures full engagement in a curriculum, which is designed to be fun, motivating and challenging. Last year Bickley Park launched an exciting new outdoor education programme together with Polaris Outdoor, to foster team and leadership skills, whilst developing independence and the ability to manage risk. Adventure School saw all boys in Years 3 to 8 taking part in residential trips which focused on progressively demanding survival skills and challenges. From camping in the Peak District and the South Downs to a Kayaking adventure along the Cornish Coast, the trip was fun, exciting and motivational. Our younger boys in Reception to Year 2 also take part in regular Forest School sessions in local woodland which develops understanding and respect for the natural world. Building resilience, teamwork and leadership skills is essential, as is teaching pupils how to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life and to respect inclusiveness. Boys improve in behaviour, concentration and academic performance when their learning environment is shaped to their needs. Outcome focused learning impacts positively on boys’ motivation to achieve. Jon Poole said: “We find that building solid and 34 JANUARY 2024
collaborative relationships is essential to success. We ensure that the boys have strong role models and mentors, both male and female, who provide the right level of discipline, encouragement and guidance. Forest School and Adventure School are great ways of establishing these frameworks to learn.” Fantastic facilities across the school also allow children from Reception through to the Senior Years to develop and excel. From the purpose-built science labs, in the Prep Department, through to the climbing wall, swimming pool, astro-turf pitches, tennis courts and the theatre, the school provides a breadth of opportunities in both lessons and after school. Prepping For Bright Futures At the heart of Bishop Challoner’s mission lies the well-being and development of each child. Our school is committed to ensuring their happiness and readiness for subsequent phases of education.
S
tudents are encouraged to engage with diverse creative challenges, honing teamwork and perseverance—essential life skills. As a Catholic foundation with Christian values underpinning our ethos, Religious Education is intrinsically woven into the curriculum. In Years 1 and 2, catering to children aged 5 to 7, Bishop Challoner School prioritises a balanced curriculum anchored in the National Curriculum, with a focus on foundational skills in English and Mathematics. Beyond these core subjects, we offer a diverse array of disciplines to enrich each child’s learning experiences. Expertise is brought into classrooms with specialist teachers in French, Computing, Music, PE, and Games, ensuring a multifaceted educational approach. In Key Stage 2, students build upon the foundational skills acquired during Key Stage 1, developing independence, enthusiasm, and confidence in their learning journey. As they advance through Key Stage 2, students benefit from enhanced access to senior school resources, including state-of-the-art science laboratories, design technology, and art studios. Our commitment to personalized education is evident through our small class sizes and consistent assessments, ensuring optimal progress for every

student. Complementing classroom instruction, students partake in an array of experiences, including educational trips, workshops, and special events. Emphasizing a creative approach to learning, we integrate topic-based projects that stimulate independent research, while nurturing individual creativity and innovation. This approach encourages students to take ownership of their learning, developing resilience and a robust sense of responsibility as they mature. Students in Years 4, 5, and 6 have the exciting opportunity to participate in residential visits during the summer term. These experiences, often to destinations like Kingswood, PGL, or France, provide students with memorable learning opportunities outside the classroom, encouraging teamwork, resilience, and cultural appreciation. In essence, Key Stage 2 is a key phase where students flourish academically, socially, and emotionally, supported by an environment that prioritizes individual growth, creativity, and holistic development. Through a blend of rigorous academics, enriching experiences, and character education, we empower students to thrive as confident, lifelong learners prepared for future challenges and opportunities.

The importance of SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
s we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY… • Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting • It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly • Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there. • Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally • Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…. Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school. • How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam? • Are there high expectations and high academic achievements? • Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure) • What are the classroom sizes? 40 JANUARY 2024
• What is expected of my child with regard to homework? • Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia? • Is there a bullying policy? • What lunchtime meals are available? • What sports and music facilities are available? • What after school clubs and trips are available? • How many pupils branch out into further education? After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

Tips for parents with children starting secondary school I It’s a new life stage for kids and parents alike, says Claire Spreadbury.
t’s the end of an era when your child leaves primary school. Your life and support network have been intertwined within a community that’s always at the end of the phone – if not a WhatsApp message – but now big school is looming and it’s time to move on. Some of that network moves on with you, but a lot of it won’t. And discovering the best ways to tackle secondary – and all the difficulties that can come with it – is often tricky. Arm yourself with these tips and you should breeze through. Get them kitted out with epic new stationery Smiggle might rule the school at primary, but once they’re 11, Stabilo pens and highlighters are top of the lust list, and Paperchase becomes your go-to. Pencil cases should be sleek and cool, and funky organisers and pads make the whole experience feel fresh.
Label everything Once they’re starting secondary, everything seems to cost quite a bit more – the fancy stationery, the school bag, the uniform. To avoid pouring all that money down the drain, be sure to label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced. You can buy name stamps which don’t wash out, stickers which genuinely stay put or even grab a good old Sharpie and write on the labels. Deck them out in cool shoes When it comes to shoe buying on a budget shop online. And if they’re picky, the likes of Next and
42 JANUARY 2024
Very let you order several pairs at once, so you can try them all on, return the ones you don’t want and only pay for the ones you do. Oh, and try Kickers. All the cool kids are in them. Get the tech set-up right We’ve all learned the hard way that homeschooling on shared tech is somewhat problematic. The good news, however, is live lessons are a breeze at secondary school, especially if they have their own computer. The Honor MagicBook 14 is ultra light and fast with an all-day battery and fast charging, all while minimising blue light by 50%. Google Chromebooks are also a dream, especially as most schools use Google Classroom. Get to know other parents When your child makes new friends, it’s much harder to get to know their parents. Lots of kids make their own way to school, and they have a phone to organise their own socials. This can feel a little bit worrying when your son or daughter is talking about going to a sleepover and you’ve never even met the child whose house they are staying at, let alone their mum or dad. Undoubtedly, this will get harder. You will be an embarrassing and interfering parent, so before they reach the Kevin The Teenager stage, try to get parents’ numbers, invite kids to your house, ask their mum or dad in when they come to pick them up – it can really help to reassure you.
Label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced

House Of Hounds New dog spa experience comes to Petts Wood
L
ike humans, dogs enjoy retail therapy and pampering. This was clear when watching an eager white schnauzer go up on his hind legs to sniff items on a counter in the recently opened House Of Hounds canine store and groomers in Petts Wood. Minutes later, he was in the arms of his daddy as instructions were made – short cut, not too much off the tail. Owner Natalie Bayram listened attentively. From then, it was onto one of the smart, black dog grooming tables and the careful attentions of Niamh, one of the House Of Hounds three canine personal stylists and groomers. The schnauzer looked happy as his coat was trimmed and blow dried, a process that took long enough for a bystander to drink a cup of coffee, courtesy of Natalie’s mum and shop colleague, Tish. Since the House Of Hounds opened, a stream of dog mummies and daddies has flowed into the smart new premises, to emerge, in the case of the dogs, often sleeker and smelling better than they went in (yes, House Of Hounds does use a shampoo that is highly effective against fox poo!). Meanwhile, owners can choose essentials and luxuries from the wide range of natural snacks, meals, harness, and accessories, and even sit themselves or their pets down in the social media snapshot chair or have a collar name disc engraved on the spot. Owner Natalie told us, “I love dogs. I have three dachshunds and a pug. House Of Hounds bring together the best, most natural, and thoughtfully sourced products from around the world. Add an unhurried grooming service, and our own parking out front, so owners can drop off and pick up their dogs easily, and we have created the perfect dog lovers experience. In human terms, we’re a spa! Yes, your dog can experience a mud bath or a facial, with us! We take care that both owners and even the most nervous of dogs have a great experience. “House Of Hounds is a local hub for dog lovers. Give us a call on 01689 328000 or come and say ‘hello’. And yes, we have a dish of free treats on the counter ready for your dog, too.” House of Hounds is open Monday – Saturday, 9.30-5pm.

How to Seize the Sunshine Tired of the uncertainty that comes with planning a UK holiday a year in advance, only to be disappointed by unpredictable weather? The stress of airport delays and last-minute changes to your plans putting a damper on your much-needed time off? It’s time to consider a game-changing alternative: motorhoming.
T
he weather makes investing in a UK holiday tricky - booking up to a year in advance, with no idea what the weather will be like when the time comes, could end disappointingly. Two weeks on the beach overseas are great but airport delays were the topic of last summer and what’s a holiday with the stress of plans changing last minute beyond your control? Plus, we love the UK: The British coastline, our cities, lakes and mountains, and sometimes even the weather. We love the comfort of being in our home country where we can take the dog, eat brilliant food, make new friends and meet old ones. That’s where motorhoming comes in, and an ever-growing number of Brits are discovering the freedom of the open road as they wave goodbye to weather-woes and airport-anguish. They

don’t need to pack because everything is ready. They can seize the sunshine at a moment’s notice and follow wherever it goes. They can avoid fluctuating costs, airport delays, end-of-holiday stress and pre-holiday money-saving. While certainly an initial investment, motorhomes have some good finance options and could accommodate your holidays for years to come. The joy and comfort of being in your own space wherever you go has its perks too – no more trawling the net for a 5-star hotel when it’s already sitting on your driveway, ready to go! With a motorhome, there’s no need to wait a year for your next holiday, with your fingers crossed for sunshine. Whenever the forecast is good, the open road is yours for the taking.

Pioneering dental implants Dental implants are an increasingly popular solution for missing teeth, giving patients good reasons to smile
I
f you have lost any teeth, there are many benefits to having dental implants. They will improve your quality of life as they both look and behave like natural teeth, restoring chewing ability and giving you more confidence when smiling. They help stabilise and retain your other teeth, and reduce the need for removable dentures or bridges. Even if you have had gaps for a long time and previously been told you don’t have enough bone for implants, think again! Advanced techniques can overcome this problem, making the possibility of getting your teeth back a reality. At Caring Dental, implants are provided by Dr Bizhan Shokouhi, a qualified dentist and specialist oral surgeon who also works and teaches at Guy’s Hospital. Bizhan has extensive training in the UK and internationally, and only uses the latest techniques and equipment, along with the highest quality components and materials. He has lectured recently to fellow dentists at the British Dental Association about the benefits of digital planning of dental implants. While implant procedures are now fairly common, it has been proven that using these latest digitally guided techniques it is possible to place implants in the best possible position, and to achieve superior outcomes. Bizhan does a lot of planning, using incredibly advanced software and 3D scans of the bone and teeth, enabling him to provide the safest and most predictable treatment possible. As well as being regularly sent implant cases by his dental colleagues, Bizhan and the team at We only use high-quality Straumann implants
Digital technology enables precise implant planning
“For anyone feeling apprehensive about treatment, Bizhan is known to be extra gentle and considerate” Caring Dental also deal with a range of complex oral surgery procedures that would normally require a hospital referral. Using a revolutionary Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) procedure, patients own blood cells are used to improve healing following extractions, including wisdom teeth, which can help to preserve bone if a patient wishes to subsequently have a dental implant. For anyone feeling apprehensive about treatment, Bizhan is known to be extra gentle and considerate, and we can even provide sedation to make implants possible for the most nervous of patients. Caring Dental is a modern, beautifully equipped, bespoke dental practice, pioneering digital dentistry for implants. Patients are already benefiting from such excellent care, and if you would like a consultation you can refer yourself simply via the website, www.caringdental.co.uk, or call 01689 664600 and one of the team will be happy to help you.

New Year, New You – all year round
H
ealth and wellbeing are two of the most frequent, and sadly two of the most readily abandoned, commitments made in New Years resolutions. They can involve challenges such as weight loss and joining gyms to tone up and exercise. In recent years, there has been a contrasting theme, reminding people that they can enjoy and be content with their bodies, of all shapes and sizes, just as they are. However, health and wellbeing are undoubtedly important all year round. Providers such as Eustace Dental & Implant Clinic in Sevenoaks, Chartwell Apothecary & Natural Healing Clinic in Westerham, and House Of Balance – Reform Pilates – in Chislehurst, have all appeared in this magazine, and they are there for you in 2024. Yet for most of us, a reliable single source of health and wellbeing service providers outside the NHS, which is replete with lengthy waiting lists, is elusive. For women, this is about to change. Kent-based former NHS Consultant Dr Chinwe Ude has recognised a pressing need for women to access advice and services in health and wellbeing that are provided for women, by women. She is launching the HealthMary App as a means to provide women with seamless access to on-demand health and wellness appointments,

lifestyle solutions, and inspirational content. Chinwe told us, “Women experience a wide range of unique challenges, from the menstrual cycle to menopause. I believe that helping women to connect with fellow women who have an innate understanding of their physical and psychological challenges and solutions can be transformative. I’ve seen the benefits of women being helped by women in the NHS, and in my private practice, and I created HealthMary to provide a groundbreaking, go-to resource for women. The App launches early in 2024, and professionals are signing up to join us now. There is a big picture: we aim to bolster the physical health of women across the UK and to improve their wellbeing and productivity.” “We already have Ambassadors and a campaign underway celebrating how Beautiful, Powerful, and Worthy women are. You can see that on our social media – Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X. There are also our special ‘Hey Girl!’ shout-outs which give women the ideas, inspiration, and joy they need to have a better life. This is about better lives.”

ometimes it takes a super chilly cold snap to spark snuggle season – and remind you how winter woollies are a wardrobe essential. And with so many brights on our radar, not to mention the ease of a pull-on with a pop of colour for an instant style update, or a flourish of fingerless gloves to show off your nail art, it’s time to dial up your daywear of fleecy extras…
SUPERSIZED SCARVES The blanket scarf is the runaway hit, which will make you look every inch a fashionista. Essentially, the bigger, the brighter, the better! Cited by Vogue as the biggest accessory trend across the autumn/ winter 2023 collections, this is not a comforter to keep under wraps – wear it long and loose, then drape it over the back of your neck when the temperature plummets. 27800 J JA AN NU UA ARRYY 2 20 20 42 4

Making garden rooms a
GREAT ESCAPE
T
he next best thing to having an ideal home is having an ideal room. For many people, their garden is an untapped resource of space in which a room can be created. Imagine having an extra single or dualpurpose space: a study, a kitchen, a games room, a home cinema, an exercise space, or even a jacuzzi. That dream is regularly realised by the clients of Great Escape Garden Rooms, based in Bromley in south-east London. “Garden rooms are very popular,” says Chris Morris, Director of Great Escape Garden Rooms. “They often complete a property, by providing the added space that homeowners most want that isn’t built into the house itself. With home and hybrid working so popular, home offices are in demand, and having one located in the garden means the daily commute is just yards, and not miles! On the leisure side, garden rooms can have all sorts of purposes, but one thing they have in common when we build them is quality and care in the construction, and our listening to our clients needs.” Client Kyne said on Trustpilot, “We love our new garden office/games room… we couldn’t be happier…. stage to completion was first class, with great attention to detail, and they provided many ideas which we implemented. We had a few bespoke features which they were helpful in accommodating (pool table lighting, wallpaper feature wall). Friends who have visited have been impressed with the look and quality of workmanship that shows great care was taken during the build. We are very happy we chose Great Escape Garden Rooms and highly recommend them.” Chris adds, “We only use premium materials, from the galvanised steel ground screws that we use as our preferred foundation system, to carefully sourced timber cladding. As our rooms are bespoke, the options are limitless. Our rooms in the past have included bathrooms, bi-fold doors, mirrored walls, home bar, golf simulators, air conditioning, feature wallpapered walls, and made-to-measure cabinetry, including TV media walls and covered jacuzzi areas.”. Great Escape Garden Rooms have a showroom available to visit by appointment. Call 01689 365007 or 07785 233082 to speak with Chris or one of his team, or email chris@greatescapegardenrooms.com.

New Year, new home? As 2024 begins, are you thinking about refurbishing, extending or building a new home this year? If you are, you will realise there is a lot to consider. We asked Tony Cheeseman, Founder and Director of IQ Property Services for some advice.
T
ony said, “The time to discover that you don’t know what you’re doing isn’t part way through a building project! People come to us, as experienced Project Managers, and ask, ‘Why didn’t I know that?’ Not everybody can be expected to know what they don’t know or understand what might slow down or undo their vision for their home. There are so many distinct stages involved in project management and delivering a new build or substantial property improvement. To start with, construction projects require the input of a wide variety of professionals and tradesmen. These will include architects, structural and services engineers, planning consultants, quantity surveyors, land surveyors, builders, carpenters, plumbers, electricians and more. The planning phase, when the team and scheme are developed, is the most important phase of any project: time taken here is never wasted. Unfortunately, we so often see this phase cut short as customers rush to start work, leading to contractors starting on site with incomplete plans and information. This eventually leads to delays and increased costs for the customer. The benefits of planning can never be over emphasised.
“The time to discover that you don’t know what you’re doing isn’t part way through a building project!”
“At IQ we like to be involved with you as early as possible so that we can get to know you and your requirements and thus assist and advise on the concept design, design development, and selection of the professional and construction team. We offer three service options: • Platinum, our exclusive project management service which completely takes on your project. You set out your vision, and we deliver it. • Gold, a flexible project management package with the opportunity for the client to take on aspects of the process themselves. • Silver, offering advice, guidance and support for an hourly rate or a fixed monthly fee.” IQ Property Management also offers ongoing management and maintenance services. They have clients who have enjoyed that service for over 25 years. IQ Property Services can take your wishes and turn them into reality, smoothly and efficiently. Let There be Light Natural light has huge benefits to our circadian rhythm, which in turn has a direct impact on our physical health and overall wellbeing. Full height windows and skylights are a perfect way to increase the amount of natural light coming in. Productivity, cognitive functioning and mood are all stimulated through both air quality and natural light. Stress levels and anxiety can be decreased with sunlight, providing much needed vitamin D. Moreover, light is the most important external factor affecting our sleep by balancing our circadian rhythm. This in turn promotes deep restorative sleep whilst positively affecting our daily mood and functioning. 78 JANUARY 2024
Improve Air Quality Many of us live with allergies, skin conditions, respiratory disorders such as asthma or more serious health problems. By considering our living environment carefully, and incorporating materials that promote health and wellbeing, such health problems may be minimised or completely eradicated. Products with high VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) are commonplace in many household products and furnishings, such as: paint, varnish, wax, manufactured wood and carpets made with nylon or polypropylene. Air pollution is among the top five environmental risks to public health, through the release of highly toxic emissions. Thus, indoor air quality is vital to our health. Organic Materials Natural materials such as timber, natural stone, wool, linen and cotton offer numerous benefits: they improve air quality, they are sustainable, highly durable and have a timeless aesthetic. These materials typically age well and contribute to a healthier living environment. Furthermore, natural plants and flowers also enhance wellbeing and productivity, they help purify the air, whilst also creating vignettes of beauty and perfect styling companions.

2023: The Year of the
ECLECTIC INTERIOR J
ust where has the time gone... One moment we’re still basking in the glow of Salone del Mobile and now, the year is over and it still feels like we’re still waiting for The Big 2023 Interiors Movement to emerge – this isn’t how it’s supposed to be! Or is it? Sure, there have been some growing themes throughout the year, but unlike before they exist either happily merging into each other, the dividing lines broken down, or completely contradicting each other. And that’s what 2023 has all been about, the throwing away of the rule book, and the uninhibited celebrating of good design, whatever it may be, and whatever it may sit next to in the home. Eclecticism, doing whatever we like in our interiors, was the decorating motto of 2023. We’ve seen the rise of ‘The home as the sanctuary’ in recent years – this year it’s more like ‘My home is just for me’. Like that chair? Take it. Like that table? Take it. They don’t go together? That’s ok, it’s all about how they make us feel – if they summon that warm, fuzzy feeling in your chest, they belong in your dining room. It’s historic. It’s hyper-contemporary. It’s highgloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi. It’s luxe. It’s laid back. Put all of the interior pieces you love into a big pot, mix them all together, and that’s 2023. Spaces became dynamic, personalised and free.
Interiors became about self-expression, each area a visual representation of who you are, design objects becoming strokes on an artist’s canvas. Beautiful objects stood in the home to be admired standalone or as part of the fuller exhibition. Colours danced, textures soared and materials intermingled. Styles, influences and ages fused. It’s wild, it’s calm, and yet it really makes sense. 2023 was the year of the Me Interior, the Do Whatever You Like Interior, the Embrace It All Interior. But there were a few signals along the way as to where we’re headed. Surfaces spanned got tactile, from the highlytextured to the mega smooth, with colours similarly extreme and high-definition, pigmentrich tones taking over. Scandi design took an unexpected twist, sofas went exploring and metallics got involved with it all. It was quite the year. In the closing moments of 2023, the echoes of such eclectic design resonate, leaving a lasting impression for the new interiors era, one where diversity and the celebration of unique aesthetics define the way we curate our spaces. Let us present the key materials and finishes from the mix that will guide us into the coming year...
COLOURFUL EXPLOSION: Dig out your kaleidoscopes and pop on your sunglasses because the pigment party isn’t over. 8866 J JAANN UU AR 2 0 2240 2 4 AYR Y
“It’s historic. It’s hypercontemporary. It’s high-gloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi”
Powerful, impactful colours have reigned this year and there’s no sign of a slowdown. Lead by the primary tones of vivid scarlet, rich ultramarine and radiant yellow with support from fiery orange, intense magenta and in-the-jungle green, the modern furniture designs of 2023 were soaked in saturation.
THE NEW NORDIC:
SUPER TEXTURES:
If you’re an aficionado of Scandi style, you always knew what you were going to get when adding to your collection – the highest quality materials, illustrious design names and classic, pass-down-the-generations-worthy design. OK – nothing’s changed in that regard, but this year Nordic furniture had a different feel, many pieces completely shaking off the past and creating brand new, original and innovative designs rather than the quiet subtleties we may be used to.
ADVENTUROUS SOFAS:
From exaggerated upholstery to extravagant finishes, this year we honed in on touch. Ridged markings were carved into solid materials and tailored into the soft to highlight their threedimensionality form a layer of shadows. Glass took a U-turn and went from the definition of smooth to hazy, distorted and uneven, taking on the look of frozen water and casting shadows that transform a room into something ethereal. Materials got loose, relaxing their yarns to become more tactile, plush or soft for a cosy cocooning feel as well as creating experimental juxtapositions alongside other textures.
The modern sofa has moved into the realms of indescribability – it’s something curved, something angled, something long, something compact, something with gaps in, something a bit hard... Furniture-wise, the sofa is the centre of the home. It’s the comfiest place to be, where everyone wants to sit, its where we unwind, its where we relax, it’s where we catch up, it’s where life happens. Our seating needs are growing – to engage with each other, to fit around corners beauty, to fit the extended family, to double as a work space, to create sculptural – and sofas have heard us.
Disco-ball-worthy spaces entered the contemporary design sphere this year with metallic accents edging indoors. It was a year that glittered, glistened and shone as playful and exuberant metallics graced platforms of all kinds: from the most up-to-date of living rooms to the catwalks of Dior, Chanel and Tory Burch, as well as stages stormed by Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. From golden glints to silvery sheens, metallic accents in the home are enthralling and magical.
DAZZLING METALLICS:

CHOICE, QUALITY & DESIGN Want to enhance your bathroom space but finding the compact area hard to work with? Fear not, as there are plenty of ways to utilise smaller bathrooms, including everything you need to make the room appear larger.
T
aking advantage of things like natural light, corners and clever storage is important and will help your compact bathroom to feel less restricted. There are ways to make the small space feel bigger without having to spend a fortune on knocking down your wall to fit a new window. One of these is to create an illusion of space, install mirrors onto your bathroom wall, as this will reflect light well creating the effect of an open window. In addition to this if you are looking to open up the space in your bathroom, go for a mirror that is back lit, at the same time helping to create a minimalistic vibe in your bathroom.
One of the reasons why small bathrooms can feel even smaller is the lack of storage. If you own a wide array of bathroom essentials (such as skincare products, hair products and oral products), consider investing in a shelf to hold all your soaps and bottles. While it might be the obvious choice to go with shower curtains, sometimes traditional isn’t always better. To make your bathroom space feel more open, consider forgoing the curtains and choose a clear glass screen to separate your shower area from the rest. Instead of separating tile patterns for your bathroom floor and your shower, use a consistent tile type to tile your floor, as having unbroken patterns creates a greater perception of depth, making your bathroom feel more spacious. Your bathroom is a precious and private space, and chances are, you are going to spend a significant amount of time in it, so why not invest in building it up to look exactly the way you want it? You don’t need a mansion to make a masterpiece, and we hope that our tips have guided you in working with whatever limited space you have, to create the stylish space you always wanted. If you are looking for more inspiration to create that tranquil bathroom space, you’ll find plenty of superb design ideas for small bathrooms (and even large ones) at our Eltham and Biggin Hill showrooms.

Hakka Group works across London and the Home Counties, led by its Managing Director Daniel Powell, who took charge after serving for 12 years in the Parachute Regiment where he learned to excel in both leadership and management under extreme pressure. “Most of all, we like to work on roofs of character”, says Daniel, “That means that we often source and use special materials, and our people use just the right tools and techniques. started working for my father over twenty years ago! The result is properties that are in keeping with their surroundings, and are a joy to live in. “I worked with my father in his roofing company before I joined the military. Now, I use the skills I picked up there to benefit our family business. That means a focus on outcomes, processes, and expertise. We put our clients at the centre of any project and give them a first-rate experience. That includes listening to their needs at all stages, explaining options on materials, style, and finish, and being a safe pair of hands. “We source and work with the finest materials, such as lead, slate, and handmade clay tiles. We have worked on projects from individual, Victorian-era dwellings, to whole estates. For example, a project to renew the lead and slate on several Crown Estate properties in Regents Park.” Dan’s company has earned testimonials such as this, “HAKKA Group are wonderful, a tremendous band of brothers. Dan is a superlative leader of men… He does all he can to make working with him and his team a great experience…. He is unlike any roofer that we’ve had… and is just a very nice guy to do business with… they have a very, very high standard of work.” - Lady P, Kent Call 0800 772 0511 or email info@hakkahouse.co.uk to discuss your project with Dan’s management team.

The Benefits of Replacing Your Windows This Winter
ith the nights drawing in and energy bills starting to creep up, you might find yourself thinking about ways to make your home more comfortable and energy efficient – saving on your energy bill and stopping those pesky draughts. It’s a well-trodden path that one of the best ways to achieve this is by upgrading your windows and doors. As well as improving your home aesthetically, there are numerous benefits and here are a few you might want to think about. Reducing Your Energy Bills Replacing your old windows and doors with energy-efficient glazing can lead to significant savings on your energy bills. Modern double glazing is designed to minimize heat loss, helping your home maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Upgrading to double glazing can eliminate draughts, ensuring your home remains warm and cozy throughout the winter. Just think, no more needing to wrap yourself in a blanket whilst relaxing with a takeaway in front of the Saturday night TV! Improved Security Those long, dark nights can lead to increased worries around security and modern windows and doors come with robust security features, giving you that all important peace of mind. ADVERTORIAL
DIY Will or Professional Will During the cost-of-living crisis, to save money DIY Wills can be very appealing. However, it is important to know that what you save now, your estate could pay ten times over after your death.
A
DIY Will is where someone uses a standard template Will which can be found on the internet. It is not advisable for anyone to do a DIY Will due to the technical and legal nature of a Will. When drafting a Will there are several important factors that must be given careful thought, and these may not be considered properly or at all when making a DIY Will. Using a lawyer will ensure that important issues will be addressed such as: who will be responsible for administering your estate after death; who the individuals are that you would like to benefit from your estate; making suitable provisions for blended families and minor children or dependent or vulnerable people; and considering relevant tax planning and tax reliefs. Another benefit of using a lawyer is that they will be suspicious and aware of any undue influence or coercion that someone may be facing when making their Will. If the lawyer believes that no undue influence or coercion is occurring, they are likely to have a file note to confirm that. A claim can be brought against a Will if an individual believes that a Will was made as a result of pressure or coercion. If a lawyer was used for drafting the Will, their file note can be used as evidence and dismiss a claim of undue influence or coercion. On the other hand, if someone prepared a DIY Will, there are no safeguards in place and no evidence to provide to a Court if a claim of undue influence was raised. It is therefore more likely that the individual raising the claim would be successful. This scenario also applies if there is a doubt over the mental capacity of the person making the Will.
