Roses were among Lady Churchill’s favourite flowers and she has her own dedicated rose garden at Chartwell. 2023 marks 115 years since Sir Winston and Lady Churchill’s wedding day, and to honour the occasion the garden team have planted a new bed of roses:
‘As part of our ongoing refurbishment of Lady Churchill’s Rose Garden, we have replanted one of the beds with a variety called ‘Bride & Groom’. This pink, hybrid tea rose has dark pink buds that open into large, lighter pink blooms.’ Christopher Lane, Garden & Outdoors Manager at Chartwell
There would always be roses on occasions celebrating Winston and Clementine’s love. In the summer of 1908 Winston decided to propose to Clementine and chose Blenheim Palace as the place where he would do so. When the day came, he asked if they could go for a walk in the rose garden. However, a torrential rainstorm began and they sought shelter in the Temple of Diana, where he asked her to marry him and she accepted.
On the day of their wedding, Clementine’s bouquet contained white tuberoses, while her bridesmaids carried cream roses. Her brother, Oswald recalled; ‘we strewed the petals of the roses from the bridesmaids’ bouquets over the Bride and Bridegroom and their path’. Their life together as a married couple began in a flurry of rose petals.
Fifty years on, Winston and Clementine were presented with a wonderful rose-themed gift for their golden wedding anniversary. The family chose to plant an avenue of golden roses at Chartwell containing 29 different varieties. Churchill’s youngest daughter Mary explained ‘We took golden

to range from creamy yellow right through to delicate orange’.
Given that the Churchills’ wedding anniversary was in September (not the best time of year to appreciate a new rose garden), the family commissioned a beautiful book of 29 rose paintings by a variety of artists, from professionals to friends. The vellum book is now on permanent display in the Dining Room at Chartwell. The Golden Rose Avenue remains a core feature within the walled garden at Chartwell; a floral monument to the Churchills’ remarkable marriage and a love that lasted a lifetime.

Losing someone you love is one of the most difficult experiences in life.
It can be made even harder if you think there is a problem with their Will or the disposition of their estate, or if a family member challenges a Will that you are sure is valid.
Contentious probate is a dispute over a person’s Will following their death. It is often between family members and/or close friends of the deceased. These disputes are often divisive and emotional. They are also increasingly common as people are more aware of their legal rights and more willing to litigate over them. The value of estates has also increased as property prices have risen and family structures are often more complicated than they used to be, for example, with children from different relationships.
Individuals have freedom to leave their estate to whoever they wish in England and Wales. This is unlike the position in many jurisdictions where forced heirship rules dictate to whom an individual’s estate (or a certain portion of their estate) will pass on their death. However,
testamentary freedom in this jurisdiction is subject to statutory intervention. The Inheritance Act 1975 enables certain categories of people, who were financially dependent on the deceased, to bring a claim against their estate for reasonable financial provision.
We understand that it can be daunting to bring a claim as you are grieving for your loved one and may also be coming to terms with the fact that they have not provided reasonably for you. We also understand that it can be daunting when a claim is brought against the estate, and you are an executor or beneficiary.
At CWJ we have extensive experience of both bringing contentious probate claims and Inheritance Act 1975 claims and defending them. Althoug0h, some cases can only be resolved following a contested hearing, we are able to settle many disputes via a negotiated settlement, or alternatively at mediation.
For more information, please contact Edward White on 01689 887831 or email edward.white@cwj.co.uk

The search to expand our wonderful school is now over, as we are delighted to announce that Breaside has successfully secured an additional site for our school and will become a 3 forms of entry Preparatory School—a remarkable achievement that will pave the way for welcoming new families to our unique Breaside community. With this exciting development, we are poised to extend our family ethos and values to a broader spectrum of enthusiastic learners and their families.
Situated on Widmore Road in Bromley, our new site is set to open its doors in September 2023. This expansion will enable us to accommodate more children, starting with Pre-Prep, Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 during Phase 1, with a plan to open Year 3 through to Year 6 by September 2024 once Phase 2 is complete. Guided by the capable hands of our Executive Principal, Mrs Karen Nicholson, and supported by the dedicated Breaside Senior Leadership Team and staff, the additional site will seamlessly integrate with our existing school. It will mirror the vibrant and engaging learning environment, as well as the holistic approach to education that Breaside @Orchard Road is renowned for.
The initial stages of the redevelopment project are already underway, with Phase 1 focusing on substantial enhancements to the Early Years classrooms, play areas, and extended outdoor learning spaces, including the incorporation of a Forest School. Come September 2023, these revamped facilities will be ready to welcome Early Years students for Pre-Prep, Reception, Year 1, and Year 2.
Spaces will be limited in this third form of entry, and thus, we will assess potential pupils in accordance with our existing Early Years, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2 criteria. To ensure transparency and to keep families well-informed, we will provide regular updates throughout the build phase of the project. Once the initial redevelopment phase nears completion, organised tours of the school site will be offered exclusively to families who have chosen to embark on this very exciting journey with us. Breaside’s expansion marks a significant milestone, one that opens doors to an exceptional education filled with boundless opportunities. If you have extended family members or friends who are seeking a place at Breaside, this is the ideal time to join us!
For more information please contact our Registrar, Mrs Lucy Greaves, on 0208 460 0916 or email lucy.greaves@breaside.co.uk.
Bickley Park School has announced the appointment of Tom Quilter as its new Head. He will take up the post in September 2023.
Tom is currently Deputy Head Upper School at Newton Prep School in Battersea, London. Previously he taught at Thomas’s Clapham and before that in the Junior School at Dulwich College for over 12 years.
He will take over from Sam Patel and Jon Poole who have been Acting Joint-Heads for the last year. They will return to their established positions as Head of Prep and Head of Pre-Prep respectively, working closely with Tom.
The Independent School Inspectorate (ISI) has recently awarded Bickley Park a ‘double excellent’ standard, the highest possible grading for an Independent School, following an inspection in March 2023.
Tom said, “There is simply so much that excites me about Bickley Park. Following the results of an outstanding inspection, it is clear the School is in an extremely strong position, well primed and excited for the future.
“A great Prep School ensures that it explores, identifies and celebrates the strengths of every child. It should offer a truly broad and balanced curriculum giving everyone the opportunity to realise their potential and thrive. The Four
Quadrants of Learning that frame the Bickley Park education in Academics, Outdoors, Arts and Community, are therefore the perfect fit for my educational ethos.
I can’t wait to be part of the community and take the lead in the School’s next chapter”.
Mandeep Hansra, Chair of Governors, said, “We are delighted to have appointed Tom. Through a rigorous recruitment process he displayed a strong understanding of Bickley Park’s central philosophy offering a rounded, high-quality education that enriches and engages boys. I am confident that supported by the excellent and established Senior Leadership Team, he will be able to build on the School’s reputation for offering the highest quality of education that produces confident, articulate and motivated young men prepared for the next step in their education.”
You can read a more in-depth interview with Tom, as well as the full ISI Focused Compliance and Educational Quality Inspection Report on the school’s website: www.bickleyparkschool.co.uk

NumberWorks’nWords, an esteemed provider of individualised tuition, builds confidence and boosts results for students.
The mastery of foundational skills in Maths and English is crucial for academic success across various curriculum areas. However, many children find these skills challenging, often resulting in them falling behind in a classroom setting.
With a rich history spanning over 35 years, NumberWorks’nWords offers specialised tuition services in Maths and English, catering to children of all abilities. Their programs are designed to help students either catch up with their learning or provide an extra challenge for those who are not adequately stimulated.
The success of NumberWorks’nWords lies in their exceptional tuition software, subject matter expert tutors, and personalised tuition programs tailored to each child’s specific needs.
Upon enrolment at the NumberWorks’nWords Bromley centre, every child undergoes a unique software assessment to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Based on this assessment, the centre manager or assistant manager, collaborates with parents to create a customised learning plan that focuses on closing learning gaps or extending the child’s knowledge, rather than teaching what they already know.
At NumberWorks’nWords, children benefit from one-on-one teaching by experienced tutors who introduce new concepts and reinforce
understanding through computer-based exercises. This combination of individualised instruction and independent practice aims to foster confident learners in the classroom.
The NumberWorks’nWords Bromley centre cultivates a supportive and enjoyable environment, fostering a love of learning in every child. Many students who have struggled academically often suffer from a loss of confidence. However, the dedicated tutors at NumberWorks’nWords provide continuous feedback on progress and recognize achievements through certificates. As a result, children who attend NumberWorks’nWords experience a positive change in their mindset about their capabilities.
If you suspect that your child may be facing difficulties in Maths or English and require support, or if you believe they need additional challenges, consider scheduling a no-obligation free assessment at NumberWorks’nWords. It serves as an excellent starting point to address your child’s educational needs.
Westminster Security is a private security company headquartered in its namesake - Westminster, central London. They were established at the turn of the millennium after recognising a niche and under-catered sector within the private security industry. That was high-end security services for UHNW individuals, private households, company owners, and executives alike.
The private security sector was awash with ‘security companies’ providing basic and lowstandard security guarding services, many being rogue and unlicensed companies run by criminals and protection rackets. Thankfully, those days are long behind us now due in part to the regulation of the Industry by the Home Office and the creation of the Security Industry Authority (SIA).
These days, you will likely find more security companies trying to crack the lucrative ‘highend’ market with their service offerings, yet one name remains consistent at the pinnacle of their
trade and the chosen provider to many securityconscious individuals, families, and businesses. Having built an excellent reputation and enviable brand image through their high standards, exceptional attention to detail, and excellence. Westminster Security has established itself as the industry leader and the ‘go-to’ company for ‘luxury’ high-end security services.
Their services are based around their core service of close protection, what is that? We hear you say. Well, essentially, its bodyguards, but not as you might envisage them. When we think of bodyguards, we all naturally think of Hulk-like burly men or gun-toting Hollywood hearth-throbs. But the reality is very different.
John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd said “Close protection operatives (bodyguards) come in all shapes and sizes, non are armed in the UK, and female bodyguards are ever more popular with our clients”. John is a veteran of the British Army where he served in the Royal Military Police and specialised in close protection within the Close Protection Unit. So, we believe him.
Other services they provide in support of their close protection operations include highly trained security chauffeurs, residential security guards, surveillance, and VIP event security.

ALasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document which allows you to appoint “attorneys” to make decisions on your behalf if you’re unable to do so yourself. This gives you more control over what happens to you if you ever lack the mental capacity to make your own decisions.
Despite their importance, certain myths surrounding LPAs discourage people from making one. Here, our wills and probate solicitor, Catherine Crabtree, unravels some of the most common LPA misconceptions…
My partner or close family can automatically make decisions for me if I’m not able to No. The donor needs to choose who (if anyone) they trust to make decisions on their behalf. Failing that, an application may need to be made to court.
Once the LPA has been registered, the donor loses access to their assets
False. For as long as the donor has mental capacity, the attorneys should only act on their instructions, and take all reasonable steps to help them make their own decisions for as long as possible.
LPAs are “only for the elderly” and inability to manage affairs is due to diseases such as dementia
It’s important to distinguish between when LPAs are used and when they are created. They are mostly used when the donor has lost capacity (often – but not always – when they are older). But they should be created early, when the donor has capacity to think about the serious choices they are making. It’s something every adult should consider.
Jointly held assets aren’t affected by mental incapacity
Property is often held between two joint owners. If one owner loses capacity, an LPA or court order will be needed for the sale. The other owner cannot sell alone.
I have a will, so that covers mental incapacity
False. A will takes effect once someone dies. It has no impact on loss of capacity.
If an LPA is already in place, another isn’t needed There are two types of LPAs. One covers property and financial affairs, the other covers health and welfare. They do not overlap.
LPAs can be created when needed by the individual
This is often not true. LPAs can only be made by someone who has the mental capacity to understand the process and make appropriate decisions.

Open-Plan
Every home is different. Every home is unique. Schmidt knows and understands this, which is why its furniture collections are designed to complement every area of the home, from kitchens, dining areas and utility rooms to living spaces, bedrooms and the home office. Thanks to Schmidt’s innovative bespoke interior design, there is something to suit every space and every lifestyle. The Arcos handleless range features a ultra-matt finish with high density particle board fronts and a choice of seven colours shown here in Nano Claystone, a no-fingerprint finish, with matching Claystone laminate worksurfaces and a Marmor laminate splashback with a veined marble effect. The recessed handle enhances a sense of space and a seamless flow throughout, while black appliances, sink and tap complement the grey furniture beautifully while adding an on-trend modern detail. The full-height cabinets with built-in
oven also provide a room divider, concealing the dining area from view.
Every storage need is carefully thought out, with under-sink pull-outs for cleaning products and household waste, including a separate bin for recyclables. Functional and practical bespoke units can also be used to display favourite ceramics and glassware as well as everyday items that can be kept within easy reach.
No detail is too much for Schmidt. The top of the base cabinets for instance feature a discreet built-in profile while drawers can be opened with a simple touch. There is also a choice of appliances to suit all culinary needs, with flush-fit induction hobs, state-ofthe-art ovens, microwaves and coffee machines plus energy and water efficient dishwashers.
Schmidt’s interior collections also extend beyond the kitchen to create a fully co-ordinated feel throughout the home. A matching bar area can be concealed behind folding doors, perfect for entertaining, while a home office can easily be integrated into an open-plan design with matching Arcos furniture for the desk and storage units. Utility areas can also be designed for laundry and a secondary sink station.
As well as being design-led, exclusive and tailored to suit every need, the furniture demonstrates Schmidt’s commitment to respecting and protecting the environment with PEFC-certified wood and sustainable production throughout.”

This customer had an old fossil fuel Aga and wanted to update it to a cleaner model. This then made them want to change their doors, worktops, flooring, reconfigure some of the units and add some new lighting. After much deliberation on their style and colour they finally decided on a Pale cream door with Aries handles to brighten and modernise the space. The clever rearrangement of the fridge gave them more work surface, which is now well lit with
the new under cabinet lights in a warm glow. They finished the room off by overlaying the floor with Karndean paliocore in Murlo, which helped to lift the light in the room even further. The couple were absolutely delighted with the transformation, and it is evident from the photographs why!
From design to delivery, you can be confident that your experience with Dream Doors will be brilliant
Kitchens are often the beating heart of a home. To some, they are a gathering place, where chats are held as coffees or teas are made and drank. To others, the kitchen is the planning centre of the home, the place where the to do lists are attached by magnets to a fridge or pinned to a notice board. Add a table or a breakfast bar, and the kitchen becomes a true social hub, a place to pop in, for eating, for longer chats, and for reflecting. And for those among us who simply love to cook, the kitchen is the place to escape into the art and act of cookery, creativity and experimentation. Kitchens deserve the best care and attention.
The team at Hale Electrics Ltd love kitchens! Company Founder Calvin Hale says, “There is more to kitchens than meets the eye. In fact, keeping electrics away from the eye is half the challenge. Cookers, hobs, ranges, white goods, and now USB chargers and ‘smart’ devices all have their power needs and their cabling, and a kitchen with trailing wires and protruding sockets doesn’t offer a truly functional and pleasing space. So, the
neatness, utility, and sleekness of the electrical installations we are responsible for is a high priority. We also, naturally, prioritise safety, and simply being a team that homeowners trust. We’re efficient and tidy, and we listen to our clients.”
The kitchen offers lots of potential, according to Calvin. “Kitchen – and home – electrics have come on so much. There are fabulous options for lighting styles that can be literally breath-taking! The latest technologies offer a level of timed and remote control to kitchens that earlier generations couldn’t have dreamed of.”

Illuminating the streets, showrooms, salons, patios, parlours and palazzos of Italy’s style capital, Milan’s inimitable furniture fair Salone del Mobile got its glorious groove on last month, as the interiors glitterati from around the globe descended. With the air humming with anticipation and energy, there were unveilings at every turn as the industry’s most luxury brands presented pieces that will come to define the next interiors season.
Our homes have come a long way since we were last here. Namely, we spent 2022 throwing the doors open and letting nature in, from every bucolic colour to organic shapes and new found-in-nature materials, creating a soothing, sometimes ethereal, mood. This year? Things are ramping up. Statement colour is here, bringing with it doses of joy, happiness and hopefulness. Textures are growing bolder, adding playful twists to elegant pieces, and shapes have taken a turn for the whimsical. Our homes are becoming places which make us smile – while remaining stunningly beautiful and carefully considered, of course. It’s an elusive balance, but one which is merged into
individual designs to make curation all the easier and more enjoyable.
There is boucle and then there’s heavy, oversized, statement boucle, and it was big, brazen bumps that dominated Salone del Mobile 2023’s upholstery. A way to give life to neutral shades and add extra oomph to colours, bold boucle says, ‘Here’s where the funs at,’ inviting hands to nestle in and explore. With the larger looped pieces in the fabric creating a thicker texture and deeper shadows, the oversized boucle gives a light-hearted wink to whatever it’s covering, be it framed with an exquisite piece of crafted walnut or topped with bright, furry cushions.
Creating subtle yet characterful decoration, ridged markings and upholstery hit Salone hard, with furniture and accessories alike adorned with subtle stripes cut into solid materials and tailored onto the soft. Instantly adding a three-dimensional
effect and forming a layer of shadows, ridges pull the eyes into them, highlighting the contrast they create and inviting you to re-examine their base material. The overall effect is one of craft and delicacy, the lines emerging gradually to form a pattern that’s simple and striking.
The ambience this year is hazy, dreamlike and illusory as textured glass takes over, casting beautiful, almost watery, shadows which transform a room into something ethereal and otherworldly. From textures embodying the organic to gentle patterns, in furniture, large textured glass slabs create the illusion of water frozen mid-movement, while lighting is embracing ever-so distorted glass shades, throwing a layer of mystery over their surroundings come nightfall.
At the top of the brightness scale this year are vivid, primary tones as interior design trends for 2023 take a turn for the kaleidoscopic. Playful and nostalgic, these happy shades remind us of our youths and bring intense splashes of energy inside. Introduction on simplistic designs big and small which let the colour itself create impactful bursts of joy and positivity.
Chaplins Furniture, 477 – 507 Uxbridge Road, Hatch End, Middlesex HA5 4JS 020 8421 1779 sales@chaplins.co.uk chaplins.co.uk
Sunkissed, Mediterranean, earthy tones are where it’s at for colour that makes a statement without being too dazzling. Green has been the darling of the interiors world for several seasons as we’ve sought to become more grounded, and this year a rich olive has emerged as the trending tone. Falling somewhere between neutral and bold, it speaks not only of nature but of tempting warmer climes and endless lazy days. Sun-baked terracotta red also dominated, the brick-like tone conjuring even more tranquil images of tiled roofs disappearing into the horizon. And relax.
DUSKY
For something colourful as well as calming, it’s dusky pink all the way. Suspended between pink and grey, this isn’t a sickly, classically pretty tone, but rather a dash of sweetness to top off a room. Used on accent pieces: a chair here, a cushion there, maybe the odd sofa – the hazy shade creates a slightly dreamlike feel, a sense of whimsy that’s at once delicate and daring.
Smooth, buttery soft, tan leather is all we’ll be sitting on this year. A tempting toffee tone took over sofas, chairs and upholstery in general across Salone, its laid-back vibe nodding towards the 70s and drawing attention to the beauty of shapes, tailoring and material combinations. With more punch than beige, think of it as an easy-yetstatement neutral, its milky, flat white-esque shade relaxed as well as elegant.
We look forward to welcoming these fresh Milanese trends – and more! – to our curated collection of designer greats both online and at our 25’000 sq ft luxury lifestyle showroom in Greater London. Want to get ahead of the crowd? Contact our Design Team to start your design journey, today.
Knowing where to start with a home makeover can be daunting, but with the right plan and approach, it can be a fun and rewarding experience. Here are some tips to give your home a makeover that will leave your living space feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
One of the simplest ways to improve your home’s décor is through the introduction of mirrors. Mirrors can create the illusion of more space and light, making a room feel larger and brighter. You can also experiment with different shapes and sizes of mirrors to add visual interest and create a focal point in a room.
Another way to alter the style of your home is through the use of window dressings. Choose curtains or blinds with different textures and patterns to add depth and interest to the room. You can also consider adding decorative elements such as tiebacks or valances to enhance the overall look of the window dressings.
Finally, updating your home’s flooring can completely transform the overall look and feel of any room. One of the best flooring options to make the most of your budget is luxury vinyl flooring from Amtico’s Signature Collection. Formerly the Polhill Arms in Halstead the building was painstakingly restored by the family who own Farningham Oak - long established Kent quality furniture retailers who started their original cottage industry working from an old farm on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors.
“We used to let the customers wander all over our house - except for a couple of rooms and buy anything they wanted and take it away” said Peter one of the Directors - it gave us a great insight into how good furniture is constructed and taught us all about the correct proportions and style which are really important skills and cannot be learned overnight. This helps us tremendously when customers ask our advice as mistakes can be time consuming and expensive for them. We strive to pass on all our accumulated knowledge to any new members of staff we employ to enhance your shopping experience. It’s always a real pleasure meeting new customers and old who continue to support us.

“Any outdoor space can be made special. Any outdoor space can be made ‘green’”, says Luke Richards, Owner-Director of Terra Firma Landscapes, a company that has been transforming London’s gardens for almost 40 years. “We can transform spaces as small as a window box or as large as a football pitch, and beyond! Pocket parks or suburban and city gardens can all provide their owners with a relaxing refuge and an enticing escape. We understand the unique constraints and challenges of smaller spaces and have a wealth of solutions, including creating terracing, recesses, and sunken areas. These sculpt the illusion of more space through height, depth, and a varied perspective. Then we can add flowers and shrubs for contrast, colour and texture. This approach works just as well for commercial premises if they have borders, lawns, car parks or other spaces ready to be transformed. If you own a business, why not enhance your local area and help your staff and passers-by to see and enjoy a new oasis instead of bare tarmac or plain grass?
“Admittedly, we have never been called out to plant up a single window box, but perhaps we might! Our pleasure comes from our ability to unlock the potential of any outdoor space and seeing the reaction of our clients, as they understand the joy that transformation can give them.
“To take another example, people love a ‘wow factor’, having something special to them that feels unique and makes them stand out. Outdoor spaces
such as gardens can have a ‘wow factor’ as much as any evening dress, well-tailored suit, or bespoke artwork. One striking example is Victorian tiling. Known as renowned builders and engineers, the Victorians created long-lasting, beautifully patterned and coloured tiling installations that made many homes memorable. Today, we honour their craft as it lives and breathes in the capable hands of our craftsmen who are specialists in the design and fitting of Victorian floor tiles and contemporary geometric designs. We have many years of experience in the repair and care of traditional Victorian black and white path tiles and in the myriad of Victorian mosaic tile schemes.”
Terra Firma Landscapes offer a full Victorian tiling design, installation, and restoration service with our supply partner, London Mosaic. They can source new and reclaimed tiles, including architectural tiles, encaustic tiles (where the pattern is inlaid into the tile), geometric tiles, heritage tiles and micro mosaic tiles, along with additional period accessories such as daisy grates, path edging, steps and York stone paving. They also provide contemporary options such as porcelain paving.

Dahlias are having a resurgence in garden trends. They are no longer the plants our grandparents grew in pots and borders.
Seen in many RHS show gardens, trendy florist shops and interior magazines, these magnificent blooms are back in fashion!
Dahlias originally came from Central America and were brought to Europe by the Spanish, along with potatoes and tomatoes. They like plenty of sunshine and are a tender plant, so they need protection in the winter.
Dahlias are the highlight of the summer garden providing height and bursts of colour in containers or flower beds. They are grown in a wide range of colours and styles, from spiky cactus blooms, single blooms to decorative dahlias and the huge dinnerplate varieties.
Top tip: Keep cutting them for their flowers as this will encourage them to produce many more flowers throughout summer.
Planting partners:
Cosmos and Dahlias are a great pairing, if you plant single-flowered varieties of both, you’ll attract bees and other pollinators to your garden. Ornamental grasses such as Pennisetum add height and movement.
Scented Nicotiana add scent to your combination as Dahlias are not scented.
Dahlia care:
Support with a plant support as soon as you plant them, then tie in every couple of weeks across the summer, so you do not lose any heads in winds. They love the sun and well-drained soil, so ensure you put grit in the bottom of any containers for drainage.
Lift and overwinter your Dahlias tubers, ensure they are clean and dry. Then store them in a dry frost-free area in straw or newspaper. Bring them back out in early April to allow them to start to bud again, then plant out in the garden from May onwards when the risk of frost is over.
Our range of UK grown Dahlia are in centre now with more deliveries each week. Look out for our Dinnerplate range in mid – late July. Our team are on hand for any help and advice you may need in your garden. Join our Orchard Club loyalty card scheme in-centre to enjoy money off and loyalty card only offers.

We love Dahlias but it is hard to choose which ones to plant. With over 60,000 Dahlia cultivars to choose from, the choice is almost too great!
Brilliant summer plants that are happy in a border or container, they are great mixed in with perennials or in a display on their own. They also make fantastic cut flowers that have a long vase life.

As someone who was born and brought up in Kent, I couldn’t be prouder of the sheer abundance and variety of foods that are such a prized possession of the “Garden of England”.
Whether it’s the fresh produce of our lovely county so revered for its marsh lamb to cobnuts, samphire, berries and more or the traditions of beer brewing, lovely country pubs serving delicious pub grub to more elevated fare and a myriad of restaurants of all kinds and cuisines that accentuate our towns and villages, we are very lucky to be living amidst such a rich food culture.
To bring matters closer to home, a fabulous, upmarket Indian restaurant local to me just outside of the picturesque town of Westerham, this establishment typifies for me the sheer brilliance and diversity of eateries that exist in Kent and how wonderful they truly are. Shampan at the Spinning Wheel as it’s known, offers ample parking space, but the key thing about the corner spot which sits at Hawley’s Corner, at the junction of Grays Road and Buckhurst Road, is the beautiful period thatched cottage that catches the eye first before discovering the impressively spacious restaurant beyond it.
The site occupies the flagship restaurant of the renowned Shampan Group, which is often spoken of affectionately as the restaurant group, the brand name is the “Jewel of South-East England” and rightly so! Other sites in the group include the longstanding Shampan Bromley and Shampan Welling.
As one enters, there’s a feeling of a very cool and calming interior with its muted shades, long and very appealing corridor which leads from the entrance of which to the left offers a very relaxed and snug lounge replete with brown hues and cosy areas peppered with art deco lamps, along with leather and velvet furnishings. It makes for a very tranquil affair. To the right of the corridor is the glamorous looking main bar of the restaurant with its array of glittering spirit bottles and more from which Shampan’s experienced bar personnel serve exotic and colourful looking cocktails that truly satisfy before the muchanticipated dinner begins.
“Amongst the absolute delight on the restaurant’s a la carte menu are such starters as Cauliflower & Broccoli Florets Pakora, Hariyali Garden Green Kebab with Cumin”
One can choose from the Caraway Room, which is the main dining for Shampan, with its Italian designed furniture providing both style and comfort while the latticed screens provide separation without isolation. The much larger Tamarind Room provides a more buzzing atmosphere teamed with great food, it also offers a coffee bar with a beautiful aroma of freshly ground coffee and the scent of spices.
Amongst the absolute delight on the restaurant’s a la carte menu are such starters as Cauliflower & Broccoli Florets Pakora, Hariyali Garden Green Kebab with Cumin and Kolkata Spice Garlic & Chilli Chicken. From the grills, worth trying are the Grilled Freshwater King Prawns with Smoked Garlic & Dill leaves along with the Lahori Chicken Chapli Kebab with Beetroot & Pomegranate.
For mains, it’s very difficult to say “no” to the likes of Seared Sea Bass with Bengali ‘Do Piyaza’ Sauce, Grilled Duck Breast with Goan Curry Sauce & Cumin Mashed Potatoes, as well as the Double Cooked Leg of Kentish Lamb ‘Salli’, Straw Potatoes. Desserts include such modern Indian temptations as Mango & Cardamon Brûlée and Double Chocolate & Cumin Fudge Brick.

The standard of cooking exemplified by first-rate ingredients sourced by local suppliers wherever possible and the warm and friendly service by gregarious staff is faultless making the dining experience several notches above.
It’s noteworthy that Shampan Westerham also has space for private events in its striking function room – the Saffron Room with it’s own private bar and lounge known as the Mumbai’s Quarter. From the Saffron Room leads on to outside open air India’s Garden, which can be hired to host intimate as well as large parties ranging from birthday parties and anniversaries to conferences, wedding receptions, corporate training and for some couples, their wedding day celebrations.
Private celebrations aside, Shampan has also had its smattering of celebs too and don’t be too surprised in seeing a well-known football players and many other well known celebrities in there dining on the restaurant’s lush cooking!
For a restaurant group that began life in Chatterton Village, in Bromley, Kent, in 1989, Shampan has come a long way. What’s more is that recognition of the Shampan name goes well beyond public adulation and even meets high critical approval as well as several awards. Shampan at the Spinning Wheel for instance has scooped the British Curry Awards no less than seven times between 2012 and 2022 – not to mention the Bromley Business Award Winner 2018 – along with its sister restaurants winning the British Curry Awards several times.
It’s hardly any wonder that the restaurant group is a bright shining star for Kent country and all in all, a winning pedigree for sure!
Vault & Vine is situated in Station Square which is just a stone’s throw from the train station.
We have now been established just over 3 1/2 years. The name originated from the fact that the premises was previously Lloyds Bank hence the Vault, which we have retained and is now our private room which houses some of our prestigious wines, champagnes and cognacs.
Our cocktails are amongst the best in the South East region made from scratch using fresh ingredients.
As you will all be aware, in the last three years since we have been open, we have all been witness to some of the hardest and most unheard of times during the dreaded Covid period, something we hope will never be experienced again. Yet with the support and loyalty of our valued customers we have survived and indeed are now thriving with some excellent events coming up.
Midweek we will be hosting events such as Quiz Nights with a Twist which will be held the first
Wednesday of the Month from 7:30 pm, De Vine Comedy nights which will showcase some new up and coming comedians as well as one off events such as a Wine Tasting Call my Bluff Evening which will take place on Wednesday 24th May at 7:00 pm. We would advise booking tables for these events.
Every Thursday we have our resident DJ playing soulful classics, Fridays and Saturdays we have a mixture of DJs all of which will ensure that our customers let their hair down, dance and have a good time. Every Sunday we have an array of talented singers who take our customers on a trip down memory lane with well-known songs that they can sing and even dance to.
Another aspect that Vault & Vine are becoming renowned for are our fresh homemade Afternoon Teas. These really are perfect for those special occasions or even just a nice way to catch up with family and friends.
As you can see we are a unique bar who really can cater for most of our valued customers’ needs and which keeps them coming back for more.

Westerham is on the doorstep of some of Kent’s finest landscapes -and offers a variety of historical attractions including Chartwell (the home of Winston Churchill). Hospices of Hope (the only UK Charity to provide free hospice care in South East Europe) is delighted to have recently opened a wonderful new Charity Shop in this beautiful town, just opposite the Green.
The shop offers a superb range of furniture (including antiques); electricals, bric-a-brac, donated clothing for all ages, books and media, and gifts. This is a one-stop paradise for collectors, investors and browsers, who love nothing more than a “good pottering” and search for unexpected treasures!
Proceeds from the shop benefit the charity’s work pioneering the development of palliative care in South East Europe.
The Kent-based charity also has shops in Otford, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, as well as further afield in Sussex, London and Edinburgh. To find out more about all their charity shops please visit www.hospicesofhope. co.uk or call 01959 524322 for more information.
These fabulous fizzes are worth a pop at £23 and under, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
There’s something special about popping the corks on a bottle of fizz, especially when you have 250 million bubbles rising to the occasion –the average amount in a bottle of sparkling wine. And with the summer social season finally in full swing (depending on the rules, of course) and our parks looking greener than a vineyard, there couldn’t be a better time to spark up the garden party atmosphere with a glass of something fizzy.
Here’s how to style up your sparkling repertoire with a heaven-sent hiss…
Solpiantez Spumante Brut Millesimato 2019, Italy, £10.99, Virgin Wines
For a taste of la doce vita, this fragrant spumante makes a delightful alternative to prosecco. Scented with white flowers and apple blossom, followed by charming orchard fruits, pear notes and a touch of lemon sherbet, it’s delicate and crisp with a fine mousse and persistent finish.
Freixenet Prosecco DOC, Italy, £12, Tesco
This perfectly pitched prosecco from Spanish cava giant Freixenet is a fitting choice for stay-athome soirées, with its striking Insta-friendly cut glass bottle and cascade of zesty lemon fruit, with hints of green apple and peach, white flower aromas, citrus acidity and lots of lovely freshness.
Van Hunks MCC Brut Rosé Sparkling Wine, South Africa, £20, Van Hunks Drinks
A little stunner from the Cape Winelands. Elegant and complex, there’s a range of red berry fruits on show, with a beguiling, savoury, earthy note from a portion of pinotage (South Africa’s signature red grape) in the chardonnay/ pinot noir blend, finishing long and fresh.
M&S Found Blanquette de Limoux NV, France, £10, Marks & Spencer stores
Deliciously inviting and fresh, summer meadow notes and uplifting flavours of ripe apples and pears alongside a very subtle biscuity note make this easy, breezy blanquette one for our gold list. Cited by Decanter magazine as a ‘Must-Try Fizz’, it’s one of 12 wines in M&S’ new-ish and nifty Found range.
Chapel Down Bacchus 2020, Kent, England, £17.99, Waitrose
With a delightful floral character and enticing aromas of elderflower and tropical fruits, freshly cut grassy notes sit alongside hints of pineapple, with elderflower nuances streaming through to the fab, fruity finish.
