A Blooming Success

Heonstance Spry (1886-1960) was and is known today, as successful florist who changed and popularised flower arranging before and after the Second World War. After teaching for seven years, Constance, aged 43, decided to leave education and focus on her passion; flowers. She opened her first shop ‘Flower Decorations’ in 1929.

During her career, Spry found that despite her efforts, such as attending auctions and ransacking her friends’ attics, she could not find the right vases she wanted for her arrangements; so she decided to design her own. Manufactured by Fulham Pottery, which previously only made utilitarian stoneware, they began producing Spry’s designs in 1935. Fulham Pottery’s chief designer William John Marriner (1881-1967) attempted to create their own range of vases called ‘Alber Ware’, which were heavily based of Spry’s successful designs.

Spry’s vases came in various models and in a limited range of pale to neutral colours. This colour palette meant that the vase would melt into the background, allowing the flowers to stand out, whilst the black examples were intended to work with brighter, stronger coloured flowers.

In 1946, Spry opened a domestic science school with her friend the cordon bleu cook Rosemary Hume at Winkfield Place, Berkshire. Together they famously helped to coinvent Coronation Chicken, when they were involved in preparing the food for the Coronation banquet of Elizabeth II. In 1953, Spry was also commissioned to design the vases and floral displays for the Coronation. Subsequently, Spry was made an OBE in

the Coronation Honours for her work.

Over the years, Constance Spry vases have dipped in and out of fashion, but it is within the last ten years that their popularity increased. Last year the Garden Museum featured Spry’s designs along with examples of ‘Alber Ware’ in its exhibition, ‘Constance Spry and the Fashion for Flowers’, which ran from May to September 2022.

It is the earlier unglazed examples which are generally most sought after today by collectors, as well as signed examples, which can achieve high

sums at auction. A vase called ‘The Crown and Lion’, designed by Spry and Oliver Messel for the Coronation of Edward VIII, and used at Elizabeth II’s coronation, sold for £10,000 in September 2022.

If you have any vases or china that you would like to have appraised with a view to auction, please contact Catherine Southon on 0208 468 1010 or email catherine@catherinesouthon.co.uk

1. ‘Napoleon’s Hat’ Vase underside stamped, ‘Designed by Constance Fry’, a popular and one of her most well-known designs. Estimate £1,500-2,500.

2. Designed by William John Marriner, inspired by Constance Spry. £300-500.

3. Constance Spry (1886-1960) for Fulham Pottery, a large vase, Estimate £400-600.

4. A Fulham Pottery tulip vase, designed by Gerard de Witt (18841976), unglazed, £250-350.

A Mass of Blossom at Chartwell

Blossom trees create a stunning spring display at Chartwell with pink and white cherry blossom,

apple blossom in the orchard and magnolia trees framing the approach to the house. Join us for our first Festival of Blossom, a joyful and reflective celebration of the gardens during national Blossom Week. Our celebrations for ‘A Mass of Blossom’ take inspiration from a letter Winston Churchill sent to his wife in 1950:

“I have thought much about you my sweet darling and it will be a joy to have you back. Your flowers are growing beautifully on the Chartwell balcony and

20 MARCH 2023 OUT & ABOUT

here the cherry tree is a mass of blossom. All your arrangements have worked perfectly in your absence and no one could have been more comfortable than your P. [Pig or Pug]. With tender love. Your ever loving husband.”

Under the arches

Visit the garden to see our beautiful blossom bench arches, each one decorated by talented groups from the local community. The willow arches have been constructed by local artist Nicola Claxton and paper artist Gude Hudson-Gool has worked with the groups on the creation of origami flowers. The arched benches will provide a space for quiet reflection, a pause to admire the view or a picturesque photo opportunity.

Pergola in bloom

Throughout Blossom Week we will invite visitors to join us making simple origami flowers that will decorate the pergola on the top terrace lawn. Come along to learn how to make origami flowers and watch as we transform the pergola into a colourful explosion of blossom.

A Mass of Blossom runs 22-30 April, normal admission applies. Blossom spotter sheets will be available from the Visitor Centre for an optional donation.

THE ROYAL TREATMENT:

Mayfair unveils spectacular secret garden party in celebration of the King’s Coronation. 6-7 May 2023

London’s iconic Mayfair will be celebrating in style from giant screenings of the Coronation events to immersive experiences across food, drink and entertainment, hosting a party like no other in Grosvenor Square from 6-7 May.

Honouring Mayfair’s incredibly strong links to the Royal Family, London’s iconic neighbourhood will mark the Coronation of King Charles III with a first of its kind, secret garden party right in the heart of London – a celebratory event transforming Grosvenor Square into an enchanting urban garden wonderland with world class entertainment and dining.

From the co-inventor of Coronation Chicken, legendary floral designer Constance Spry, having owned a shop on South Audley Street to Mayfair being home to various Royal Warrant holders such as Purdeys and H.R. Higgins, to the late Queen Elizabeth herself being born in the neighbourhood, it is only fitting that Mayfair will be heralding the King’s Coronation in style. The neighbourhood’s celebratory party will be nothing short of an experience fit for royalty offering a fanciful aesthetic of a beloved garden soiree drawing inspiration from Alice in Wonderland

while celebrating new age opulence across food, shopping and celebration.

Rejoicing in the first Coronation in almost 70 years, this once in a lifetime party will indulge the senses with an assortment of special experiences including Coronation themed cocktails and modern twists on famous Coronation dishes to sample.

The square will also be displaying cinema sized screens and seating throughout, offering an unforgettable location to watch the Coronation ceremony and Windsor concert across both the Saturday and Sunday of the Coronation weekend. The Mayfair Secret Garden Party will kick off Mayfair’s spring and summer of celebrations.

The importance of making mistakes

Our role, as parents and teachers, is to give our young people the skills and the confidence to be the best version of themselves. Miss Antonia Beary, Headmistress of Mayfield School tells us more.

Nobody achieves success (however you define it) without making mistakes, but the pressure on our young people to be perfect, particularly from social media and wider societal influences and expectations, not least those imposed by the spectre of GCSE and A Levels, often clouds their perspective. Education should not simply be about what we learn, but how we learn.

Creating an environment where individuals are able to make their own mistakes, and learn from them, should be a priority for us all. An environment where pupils are not always right, but mistakes will not scar for life. I would like to suggest that expecting every piece of work to be an A* throughout a child’s career is not going to create the resilient individuals we need to respond to the needs of the age in which we find ourselves.

This is where creative and performing arts and team sports have a fundamental role to play. Our foundress at Mayfield was ahead of her time in placing creativity at the heart of our curriculum and encouraging an appreciation of interdisciplinary approaches when she established the School over 150 years ago. To be a good scientist you need to be creative; to be a fine artist you need discipline, structure and perspective. Much maligned and often seen as the poor relations, creative subjects, along with sport, are the first to be squeezed out of the curriculum. This is at best short-sighted, and I am convinced has the potential to destroy independent thinking and stifle creativity and teamwork in all sectors of the economy.

In art, as in life, there is seldom just one right answer, one interpretation, one correct approach.

It is not possible to play an instrument, recite a speech, draw or sculpt an object perfectly the first time you try. In fact, to create something really good, you need to put in a considerable amount of time and effort. This is why studying these creative subjects is so

important. You cannot stay within your comfort zone: you have to make mistakes, adapt, revise and learn to make progress.

We need to be educating girls and boys to make mistakes and take calculated risks not simply to improve and broaden their horizons, but to ensure they are able to function and contribute constructively to the society in which they live, and which we want them to be defining and leading. Frequently it takes different approaches to encourage boys and girls to make mistakes and learn from them. Not better, just

different, and of course there are some similarities and shared approaches which need to be employed. Creating an environment where girls feel comfortable to get things wrong without panicking, stressing or losing confidence in themselves and their ability, is an art.

To do well at GCSE and A Level, you need to learn the answers that the examiner wants you to give, and use the precise terminology required to get the marks. Now, as teachers of course we have a responsibility to provide our students with the information and tools with which to achieve the best possible grades. It is true that to discern what someone wants, and provide them with information they need in the form they require is a useful skill, so this is an important element of education. But it is not the only one, and sadly it takes on a disproportionate importance in the current education system, overshadowing other more practical skills and talents. If you have good teachers and work hard you can do very well, without necessarily having to think outside the box, or challenge any conventions. However, even if you understand

complex concepts, think originally and independently, you won’t necessarily be rewarded with an A*.

We want to be educating a generation who can recognise fake news, who won’t be short-sighted and who will challenge the conventions of contemporary society when it is needed, rather than simply conforming to the values – or lack thereof – of the current hierarchy. If we are going to stop this generation making the mistakes we have made, then they need to begin to make their own, and sooner, rather than later. The best place for this, is in School.

“If we are going to stop this generation making the mistakes we have made, then they need to begin to make their own, and sooner, rather than later”

Inspiring Boys at Bickley Park

A quality education with adventure at its heart

At Bickley Park, your son will benefit from a specialist boys’ education which harnesses their natural curiosity and enthusiasm and ensures full engagement in a curriculum, which is designed to be fun, motivating and challenging.

This year Bickley Park is launching an exciting new outdoor education programme together with Polaris Outdoor, to foster team and leadership skills, whilst developing independence and the ability to manage risk. Adventure School will see all boys in Years 3 to 8 taking part in residential trips which will focus on progressively demanding survival skills and challenges. From camping in the Peak District and the South Downs to a Kayaking adventure along the Cornish Coast, the trips promise to be fun, exciting and motivational.

Our younger boys in Reception to Year 2 also take part in regular Forest School sessions in local woodland which develops understanding and respect for the natural world.

Building resilience, teamwork and leadership skills is essential, as is teaching pupils how to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life and to respect inclusiveness. Boys improve in behaviour, concentration and academic performance when their learning environment is shaped to their needs. Outcome focused learning impacts positively on boys’ motivation to achieve.

Jon Poole, acting Head said: “We find that building

solid and collaborative relationships is essential to success. We ensure that the boys have strong role models and mentors, both male and female, who provide the right level of discipline, encouragement and guidance. Forest School and Adventure School are great ways of establishing these frameworks to learn.”

Fantastic facilities across the school also allow children from Reception through to the Senior Years to develop and excel. From the purpose-built science labs, in the Prep Department, through to the climbing wall, swimming pool, astro-turf pitches, tennis courts and the theatre, the school provides a breadth of opportunities in both lessons and after school. Events, such as public speaking and general knowledge competitions, music performances and school productions, together with Adventure School all foster enthusiasm for taking part and embracing personal challenge.

Our boys leave us confident, respectful, articulate young men, ready to take on the next steps in their education.

ALWAYS ON GUARD WESTMINSTER SECURITY

equipment out that could be used to gain entry to your home. It is also important to be aware of the latest trends in criminal activity, such as the use of social media to identify potential targets and take steps to protect against these threats.

In recent years, the importance of residential security in London and the home counties has become ever more important, particularly for high-net-worth individuals who are concerned about protecting their families and assets. With the ever-increasing crime rates and a vast increase in targeted, often violent highvalue burglaries and street robberies, it is crucial for homeowners to take proactive steps to enhance their personal and property security.

One of the most effective ways to improve home security is to make your property less appealing to criminals by investing in technical and physical security, such as CCTV, alarms, and lighting. Also, fences, gates, windows, and doors. A 24/7 security guard presence or residential security team is advised should your profile, status, threat and risk require such measures. This is an essential requirement for high-profile business leaders, celebrities, political and royal stock.

In addition to these often-expensive solutions, there are several simple steps that everyone can take to enhance their security. These include making sure you lock doors and gates, close windows when you go out, keep your car keys out of site, and don’t leave ladders or garden

Ultimately, the key to effective home security is a combination of technological solutions, physical measures, and manned guarding. By taking proactive steps to protect their homes and assets, homeowners can help to ensure the safety and security of their families and possessions for the peace of mind that comes with good security awareness and measures.

Julien Macdonald makes a star-studded return to London Fashion Week

Julien Macdonald returned to the London Fashion Week schedule after a three-year hiatus with a celebrity-packed show.

Amanda Holden and her 17-year-old lookalike daughter Lexi were on the front row as the collaboration with Mexican designer Gabriela Gonzalez was unveiled.

Gemma Collins, Despacito singer Luis Fonsi, Strictly Come Dancing stars Aljaž Škorjanec and Janette Manrara, and presenter Ashley Roberts, were among the other celebrities in attendance.

While supermodels Winnie Harlow, Leomie Anderson and Cindy Bruna walked the runway.

The Julien X Gabriela AW23 show was held at the ornate Freemasons’ Hall, central London – the ideal backdrop for a typically glitzy collection.

British model Anderson opened the show in a black sequinned bodysuit with cut out details and exaggerated shoulders – to Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ hit Unholy.

Gothic glamour featured heavily in a collection full of the Welsh designer’s signatures.

It included bodycon silhouettes, bejewelled minidresses, metallic gowns, mesh catsuits and masses of sequins.

There were several draped minidresses reminiscent of the silver one that Macdonald famously created for Paris Hilton’s 21st birthday party.

The London Fashion Week veteran is a go-to designer for red carpets, and his ultra-glamorous dresses have recently been worn by Gisele Bundchen and Bella Hadid.

The 51-year-old has also dressed music icons like Beyonce, Kylie Minogue and Jennifer Lopez. The show was soundtracked by a series of club bangers, including Beyonce’s Break My Soul and the TikTok-famous White Lotus theme tune, Renaissance. Bruna’s strutting in a white feathered minidresses elicited cheers from the audience, as did Harlow’s appearance in a black bodysuit and flowing cape with feather collar.

Harlow closed the show, taking a final turn to Chaka Khan’s I’m Every Woman. Macdonald and Gonzalez joined the trio of top models to take a bow as silver confetti rained down –marking a triumphant return to the London catwalks.

SPARKLY STATEMENT GARMENTS REIGN SUPREME on Baftas red carpet

Ariana DeBose, Alison Hammond and Lashana Lynch were among the celebrities inspired by sparkles. By Prudence Wade

Celebrities were keen to have a bit of fun on the red carpet, with sparkling metallic looks taking over.

Whether it was subtle sparkles or allout glam, everyone from Viola Davis to Alison Hammond got in on the trend.

Davis wore a custom look by Stella McCartney: a striking purple gown with a cape attached.

On first look, Matilda actor Lashana Lynch’s dove grey outfit by Fendi –with a high neck and long sleeves –seemed quite subdued.

But she added glamour with a sparkling Bulgari serpent necklace dangling down her back and silver jewels studded on her face.

West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose had a muted take on sparkles, in a subtly bejewelled nude outfit by Fendi. It was almost entirely sheer, except for a skincoloured bodysuit underneath.

Nominated for the EE Rising Star Award, Sheila Atim channelled futuristic fashion in her Bafta look.

The silver column dress by Prada had jewelled detailing, and was accessorised with a layered diamond necklace, diamond drop earrings and a lilac buzzcut.

Alison Hammond was hosting the Bafta Studio – an access-all-areas experience – and got glammed up in black sparkles for the event.

Taking on red carpet presenting duties, Vick Hope wore a body fitting KYHA Studios gown in glittering cobalt blue.

Recognising the joy of food at KYN BICKLEY

One of the biggest dietary changes as we age is that our nutritional requirement goes up, but our appetite goes down.

One way of ensuring this is addressed is through a high-nutrient diet. Eva Humphries, the expert nutritionist at KYN advocates that we can enhance residents’ lives through a nutrition-first diet over a calorie-led one.

Food can also be quite evocative and take people back to past memories, with different smells, tastes and textures bringing these to life. We know that nostalgia is an important element in encouraging residents to dine well. Stimulation is essential for residents living with dementia, so traditional favourites such as shepherd’s pie or fish and chips can be good options if cooked healthily and nutritiously. It might be that a resident liked a certain meal as a child, or it reminds them of a holiday, so adapting and tailoring food as much as possible to residents’ wishes/preferences can provide so much more than just a satisfying meal.

Our taste also changes over time, and these changes may be more pronounced for someone living with dementia. Residents living with dementia may, for example, find certain colours, textures or smells off-putting, or sometimes they may eat certain foods they previously wouldn’t have.

Incorporating protein into meal options and snacks is also important, as older people tend to lack protein. High-quality and protein-rich granola bars and bowls are good options for residents who need to enhance their protein intake, but also like the sweeter things in life.

KYN’s model of care is built around recognising the importance and value of autonomy as well as meaningful relationships in a care home environment. Working alongside Eva, the chefs at KYN BICKLEY cook all the food onsite and have designed daily changing menus with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal ingredients and satisfying flavours that are tailored to the palates and nutritional needs of all residents.

The Midas Touch

When you start a business, you don’t know where it will take you. You hope that you’ll have the Midas touch, but you never know.

I started Towns Bathrooms in 2011 after many years in the business, starting small but starting as I meant to go on: offering customers a superior, personal service. My team and I pride ourselves on our bathroom design service, listening to what you need – not what we want to sell you; helping you visualise your new space with our cutting edge software; and being able to provide you with a quote promptly and transparently – no smoke and mirrors or should that be steam and mirrors?

Coming into the showroom, you’ll love our mirrors but our bathroom ranges will prompt a second look. Elegant lines, contemporary curves and luxurious finishes, we stock well-known brands such as Aqualisa, Matki, Vado, Ashton & Bentley, Laufen, Roca, GSI, Graff and Bisque. These brands are constantly innovating and refining their product range - an attribute we share. We love helping your bathroom evolve to suit your needs.

We are an independent, local Kent business and we really believe in ‘people buying from people’. Sitting down with one of the team will show you that our customer service is second-to-none – we care about your bathroom from that first meeting to, well, your first bath or shower! You might be reconfiguring your house, transforming your bathroom into a wet room, adapting it to suit changing needs or installing therapeutic features such as a steam room, aromatherapy shower or rejuvenating bath; whatever you’re doing the Towns Bathrooms’ team can help.

As for the Midas touch, well, just look at this divine bath from Ashton & Bentley. Towns Bathrooms are proud to be a stockist of this statement piece for the bathroom, a bath so aesthetically pleasing with its shape and curves, it hints at a Henry Moore sculpture. Made of stone, a material famed for its heat retention and enduring cleanliness, it has a textured metallic finish, a lustre available in copper or brass. Its ergonomic design makes it the most comfortable bath you’ll find. Fit for a king … or queen.

Great design, great bathroom inspiration and great service. Give us a call or pop in to see us. We’d love to give you the royal Towns Bathrooms’ treatment.

SCHMIDT KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT WORKS

Schmidt’s innovative ideas offer space-saving storage, easy access and ergonomic design.

When it comes to designing the ultimate comfortable kitchen, Schmidt knows exactly what works. With over 90 years’ experience in creating solutions that suit every culinary need and every lifestyle, this French kitchen and bespoke interior design company has endless innovations for easy living. From foldaway worktops and slide-out breakfast shelves to modular storage and under-sink solutions, a Schmidt kitchen provides all the practicality and function you need. Here’s just a taste of what is available.

A foldaway worktop for extra prep space

When additional preparation space or extra room for guests is needed, a practical foldaway worktop offers 57cm more surface area in an instant.

A unit for the extractor hood

Make use of every inch with storage concealed either side of the extractor hood. Available in 60cm, 90cm and 120cm versions to suit every space, it’s perfect for keeping dried herbs and spices within easy reach of the hob when cooking.

Dedicated drawer organisers

For drawers and internal pull-outs, Latitude’s modular elements can be adapted to suit every need, and to the nearest millimetre too. Perfect for herbs and spices, utensils, cutlery, knives and more, it’s ideal if installed beneath the hob.

Internal deep drawer for cleaning products

Keep cleaning items, bin bags, buckets, brushes and more close to hand in an easy-access under-sink unit with deep storage for larger pieces.

A bespoke worktop unit, perfect for breakfast

There’s no waste of space with this bespoke worktop unit, which comes with a handy slide-out shelf to serve breakfast.

Larder unit with fully opening drawers

Store dried ingredients, packets, bottles, boxes and tall items in this full-height larder, which can hold two weeks’ worth of groceries for a family of four in one go. Its huge capacity enables cooks to leave other cabinets free for other items.

Schmidt’s 3D Fit for perfect symmetry

Schmidt base units come with six drawers rather than the usual five. This allows for a straight-lined symmetrical look, combining two or three drawers to allow for deeper storage. Cabinets are also made to measure to the nearest millimetre, avoiding the use of unnecessary fillers and wasting space. With higher, deeper, wider units, the maximisation of storage is fully achieved – up to 26%. As can be seen in the photo below this means a double row of full-sized dinner plates fit into one drawer.

LIVING COPPER Adds a Dazzling New Dimension to Swadling Brassware

Anew arrival to the Swadling Brassware family provides a contemporary twist on classic shower fittings.

Living Copper adds an intriguing extra option alongside more established favourite finishes, such as chrome and brass. Putting copper in the spotlight – instead of its usual role as concealed pipework – the new collection delivers a truly different dimension in colour and tone. Its opulent pinkish hue is at once eye-catching yet understated, transforming the look and feel of any bathroom space.

Living Copper adds instant warmth to a bathroom and works beautifully in both contemporary and traditional bathroom designs. It complements warm pastels and offers a wonderful contrast to cool, light marble surfaces and looks particularly striking against a dark tiled backdrop.

As the name suggests, Living Copper has a living quality that changes and evolves over time, contributing to its unique appearance. The uncoated copper will oxidize into a finish

known as a patina, which protects the metal from corrosion. Each piece of Living Copper reacts uniquely to its environment, ageing gracefully and developing its own character and variations in tone over time.

CHOICE, QUALITY & DESIGN

Want to enhance your bathroom space but finding the compact area hard to work with? Fear not, as there are plenty of ways to utilise smaller bathrooms, including everything you need to make the room appear larger.

Taking advantage of things like natural light, corners and clever storage is important and will help your compact bathroom to feel less restricted. There are ways to make the small space feel bigger without having to spend a fortune on knocking down your wall to fit a new window.

One of these is to create an illusion of space, install mirrors onto your bathroom wall, as this will reflect light well creating the effect of an open window. In addition to this if you are looking to open up the space in your bathroom, go for a mirror that is back lit, at the same time helping to create a minimalistic vibe in your bathroom.

One of the reasons why small bathrooms can feel even smaller is the lack of storage. If you own a wide array of bathroom essentials (such as skincare products, hair products and oral products), consider investing in a shelf to hold all your soaps and bottles. While it might be the obvious choice to go with shower curtains, sometimes traditional isn’t always better. To make your bathroom space feel more open, consider forgoing the curtains and choose a clear glass screen to separate your shower area from the rest. Instead of separating tile patterns for your bathroom floor and your shower, use a consistent tile type to tile your floor, as having unbroken patterns creates a greater perception of depth, making your bathroom feel more spacious.

Your bathroom is a precious and private space, and chances are, you are going to spend a significant amount of time in it, so why not invest in building it up to look exactly the way you want it? You don’t need a mansion to make a masterpiece, and we hope that our tips have guided you in working with whatever limited space you have, to create the stylish space you always wanted.

If you are looking for more inspiration to create that tranquil bathroom space, you’ll find plenty of superb design ideas for small bathrooms (and even large ones) at our Eltham and Biggin Hill showrooms.

DREAM DOORS NEW LIFE FOR OLD KITCHENS

Dream Doors was established 20 years ago with a unique proposition to replace kitchen doors and worktops. Our award-winning service has helped us grow into a trusted brand and to this day, we continue to provide the same service, along with high quality kitchen appliances from stylish brands, such as Neff and Bosch. As kitchen experts we provide designs and finishes from the most modern to the more traditional styles and colours.

Thanks to our extensive range of kitchen doors, worktops and appliances, we can help you fully customise your kitchen to your ideal requirements. Our products are made to measure, meaning we can create everything to your specific requirements. Whether it’s modern, traditional or something in between, we’re guaranteed to have the products for you.

This customer had an old fossil fuel Aga and wanted to update it to a cleaner model. This then made them want to change their doors, worktops, flooring, reconfigure some of the units and add some new lighting. After much deliberation on their style and colour they finally decided on a Pale cream door with Aries handles to brighten and modernise the space. The clever rearrangement of the fridge gave them more work surface, which is now well lit with

the new under cabinet lights in a warm glow. They finished the room off by overlaying the floor with Karndean paliocore in Murlo, which helped to lift the light in the room even further. The couple were absolutely delighted with the transformation, and it is evident from the photographs why!

Perfectly Imperfect

Discover designs that don’t stay within the lines.

As technology advances, screens dominate and robots seem like a very imminent possibility, our homes are turning their backs on perfectly precision-made modern designer furniture and back to the simplest and most honest of decoration – the irregular and imperfect.

Contemporary furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories have taken a distinct turn for the uneven, a sidestep from the ‘bring the outdoors in’ trend that has ruled over contemporary home design for the past few years. Geometrically precise these forms are not, instead it’s as if they’ve been drawn by the human hand of nature itself. Expect wobbles, variations, and a distinct lack of straight lines.

A NOD TO NATURE

Subtly backing up the green colouring, natural materials, and plant patterns currently filling our homes come unbalanced organic shapes, forms that could have evolved out in the garden, woodland or sky, or sea. They have a feel of the stumbled upon rather than the industrial, and if manufacture is alluded to at all, the pieces undoubtedly nod to the individually hand-crafted.

There’s no thought of factories. Every piece gives the impression of a one-off, imbued with love and charming inconsistencies.

This all stems from the natural, of course – the smooth, rounded edges, the bucolic influences, the almost accidental forms. But this modern decorating trend is a nature-inspired design that just so happens to be in your home like it’s been growing there for years overlooked or has been recently discovered behind a wall. Welcome to the completely non-obvious, the almost unseen, the would-have-been-there-anyway-even-if-you-hadn’tnoticed-me school of interiors.

ALL THE FEELS

It’s not about being noticed. It’s about the feeling. These asymmetric forms soothe the mind, as unthreatening as a plant, rock or pool of water with their shapes that speak of fresh air and freedom. These are shapes that seem formed by time rather than an intentional hand. The eye breezes over them, gently bumping across those smooth curves, while the mind draws them in and exhales them, the lack of angles, corners and straight edges signalling that it’s time to relax. One irregular piece of furniture tones down a room, calming its angles and pacifying it, while a larger collection creates a spa, away-for-the-weekend feel, forming a space that’s dedicated to tranquillity, health and peace.

Wayfair has a huge range of options and designs to suit any space and budget. A potting table will provide the perfect place to plant up seedlings and keep your potting mix and tools in one tidy space.

GARDEN TOOL KIT

Ensure you can keep your garden looking its best by investing in all the essential tools to help you do just that.. COMPACT FURNITURE - SPACESAVERS

OUTDOOR REFRESH

After the cold, windy and wet winter months, your garden is undoubtedly in need of some TLC. It may be that a day in the garden of sweeping, clearing and pressure washing is all that’s needed to prepare the space for warmer days to come. A new season can provide the motivation to give gardens a makeover. A little pre-planning can go a long way to get the most out of your budget if that’s the route you are taking. Start by creating a wishlist or moodboard of what you like and what you’d ideally like in the space. Pinterest is a great tool for pulling together boards and finding inspiration.

VERTICAL GYO

No matter the size of your outdoor space, enjoy the benefits of growing your own with the addition of some wall hung planters. Kitchen herbs grown close to the back door or kitchen window can be easily picked to add flavour to home cooking, whilst also enhancing the aroma of your garden. Mint, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme can be grown all year round in British gardens.

Fold-away garden furniture will maximise your space. Quick and easy to pop up when you want to enjoy an afternoon cuppa or dine alfresco, a compact bistro table and chairs can be stored simply out of sight when not in use, keeping a smaller garden clutter free. A hanging table will provide a petite tabletop, transforming a balcony for spring days and summer evenings. Find more ideas, advice and inspiration at wayfair.co.uk.

Royal Family Collections by British Designer Victoria Eggs

British designer Victoria Eggs has added to her best selling Royal Family collections with a Limited Edition Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Collection and King Charles III Coronation Collection, both of which are now available for purchase.

The Limited Edition Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Collection design features her Majesty’s iconic crown, surrounded by a spray of flowers, each representing England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, along with pine from the gardens of Balmoral and Lavender and Rosemary, (for remembrance), from the grounds of Windsor Castle, and featuring in the Queen’s memorial service floral arrangement, which was poignantly hand-selected by King Charles.

A simple message on each item reads ’Thank you for Everything’. The words of Paddington Bear, and a tender sentiment that reflects our gratitude.

The collection includes a Bone China mug, Bauble & tea cup and saucer, a tea towel, canvas tote bag and a magnet. The collection was also shortlisted for the ‘Gift of the Year’ Awards 2023.

The King Charles III Coronation Collection design incorporates the National flowers from the UK along with Oak, a symbol of strength

and stability, and Ivy, the symbol of commitment, which trails throughout this intricately hand-drawn design.

Subtle nods to the King’s life are hidden amongst the wildlife and foliage; the Eagle, swords, a parachute, and anchor representing the British Armed Forces, pens, and paintbrushes –representing his love and support for the Arts, young people, the countryside and his life-long environmental activism.

The King Charles III Coronation Collection has been shortlisted for the ‘Gift of the Year’ Awards 2023. The range includes a mug, cup and saucer, tea towel, canvas bag, apron, bauble, bunting, tea, biscuits, coasters, a postcard, and a magnet. The collection is now available to purchase from victoriaeggs.com and will also be available in Harrods, Liberty, and Whole Foods.

WOODPECKER FLOORING CELEBRATES THE PERFECTION OF IMPERFECTION

ABOUT WOODPECKER FLOORING

Woodpecker is a family-run business with a heritage in the timber industry that goes back three generations.

Founded nearly 50 years ago by Bruce Ker, a skilled craftsman who loved teaching people how to work with wood, the Woodpecker tradition is continued today by his son Nelson and grandson Darwyn.

Since the very beginning, Woodpecker have been passionate about designing and sourcing the finest wooden floors.

Their dedication starts in the forest.

Woodpecker only use responsibly sourced wood with full FSC® or PEFC certifications, selecting the trees before they are felled and paying close attention to how they are sawn, stacked and dried.

As interest soars in ‘wabi sabi style’ – an interior trend celebrating the aesthetic appeal of imperfections – wood floor experts Woodpecker Flooring are embracing natural beauty in all its unfiltered forms.

Woodpecker Flooring’s Berkeley Century Pine is a majestic collection that brings a wealth of character through its thick, traditionally oiled boards. Each board has been hand-worked and boasts undulating ridges and grooves, as well as knots, scrapes and age-blackened bevels and nail holes. It is these imperfections that give Berkeley Century Pine its distinctive finish.

Darwyn Ker, Managing Director of Woodpecker Flooring, said: “The appetite for more natural, slightly imperfect finishes is growing. Homes are very much a reflection of real life and not everything is perfect all of the time. Berkeley Century Pine reflects this in a truly authentic way. These are beautifully imperfect floors with a story to tell.”

Berkeley Century Pine is part Woodpecker Flooring’s Legacy Floor Range; all these boards offer something extra special, from careful handfinishing to extraordinary textures and character.

Consumer interest in wabi sabi style is rising according to research from Pinterest Trends.

Berkeley Century Pine Engineered Wood Flooring is available now from woodpeckerflooring.co.uk priced at £123 per m2

The dry wood is then kilned twice for maximum stability before being machined. Centuries-old hand-finishing techniques - such as lacquering, oiling and antiquing the wood - further enhance its natural beauty.

It’s fair to say, nobody knows or cares more about wood than Woodpecker.

Headquartered in Caerphilly, Woodpecker currently offer over 100 flooring options in real wood, engineered wood and wood design which retail online and at nationwide stockists. For more information:

What is the Best Restaurant in the London Suburbs? According to the British Curry Awards 2022, also known as the ‘Curry Oscars’, it is the Copper Ceylon Restaurant in Bromley. The Copper Ceylon is also the first Sri Lankan restaurant to pick up a British Curry Award since they began in 2005.

We’ll be making a bee line for the restaurant in the New Year. It makes the most of its weekend offering in particular, being open on Fridays and Saturdays between 10am and 2pm, when it has a DJ and a lineup of entertainers from belly dancers to fire eaters. Maybe we’ll go in those hours and try out some cocktails while we’re at it.

It wasn’t long ago that the Copper Ceylon was also named the Sri Lankan Curry Restaurant of the Year in the London Curry Awards 2022.

Cllr Hannah Gray, Mayor of Bromley, who was present at the British Curry Awards ceremony, has said, “I have been involved with and supported events at the Copper Ceylon restaurant and Haran and his team have been incredibly generous and provided a great experience every time. I am delighted they won their category in such a prestigious annual awards ceremony.”

Owner Haran Thurairajah wants to go further, “Now we are so proud of what we have achieved in such a short period of time. We are looking to build on this foundation to be one of the best Srilanka restaurants in the world.”

What can you (and we) sample at the Copper Ceylon restaurant? Homely hospitality and Sri

Lankan cuisine from street food to dishes that Sri Lankans eat at home. Flavours you simply won’t get in Indian, Thai and Chinese restaurants, from the Hot Batter Squid to the Hoppers, Roti, and Sambols, Jaffna Mutton Curry, Pork Black Curry, and Pumpkin Mustard Curry, and from the dessert menu, Watalappan, a traditional Sri Lankan desert made using coconut milk, cardamom, eggs, kithul and nutmeg.

The restaurant has an outstanding Christmas menu and, with owner Haran a frequent flier to Sri Lanka to research new dishes, more will be added in the New Year and beyond. Why not try out Bromley’s latest award-winning restaurant for yourself?
