CHAPPELL CONTEMPORARY
Established in 2015, Chappell Contemporary specialises in modern art by both emerging and established artists from across the UK.
After working in the art world for over 10 years, Chappell Contemporary’s founder Paula Chappell decided it was time to open her own space, a place where she could promote, show and sell art that she was passionate about.
“I only sell art that I would hang in my own home, and trust me, my walls are adorned with art in abundance!! ” “The term investment is often bounded about frivolously by art dealers, trying to entice you into purchasing the next big thing… Yes we have established artists, yes it is true, art is generally an amazing investment. But one thing I will always say to my clients and one thing that I have always stood by as an art dealer is to - Only buy art, you love. That above all is the most important factor when purchasing art for your home”My clients trust me, they trust the process and if whilst enjoying your artwork it increases in value then thats just the cherry on the cake”
The gallery in Whitstable, Kent, is filled with colourful, fun-loving, witty artworks. Selling original paintings, limited editions and sculptural pieces, the space is fresh and bursting with excitement.
Being by the seaside, one may be alluded to the idea that the gallery would sell cliche ‘seaside art’ paintings of boats, the crashing sea perhaps…….but not here, Chappell Contemporary are not one for convention, they deal with the bold and unexpected.
The giant disco ball in the centre of the gallery may give you an inclination of what you’re walking into. So often art can be heavy, complicated, it can exclude. Chappell Contemporary feels inclusive,
friendly, approachable. The gallery has work that you want to hang on your walls, work you want to wake up to. Artworks that will enhance your home, create talking points when you have your friends over for dinner party, art to initiate discussions over a glass of Sancerre.
The gallery host events and solo shows throughout the year, curating evenings where clients can meet and engage with the artists and start to understand their inspirations and processes. Pay us a visit and immerse yourself in the gallery experience, with the hope that each time you visit you will be inspired, tempted, and stimulated.

Pre-nups, Cohabitation Agreements and even Pet-nups!
Preparing a pre-nup or cohabitation agreement is not about anticipating a breakup. It is more about building a strong foundation for your relationship and protecting your future both financially and emotionally.
These agreements can be particularly important if one partner comes to the relationship with significantly more financial resources than the other. Additionally, you can protect inheritance rights particularly where there are children from previous relationships.
Pre-nups
For couples getting married in England and Wales a pre-nuptial agreement allows you to establish clear financial arrangements for what would happen in the event of a divorce. This can include pre-existing assets like property, inheritances or business ownership. It can extend to future income, savings and how this will be handled.
Although pre-nups are not automatically legally binding in England and Wales they will be upheld by a court if they meet certain qualifying criteria to include that the agreement must have been freely entered into, independent legal advice was given to each party and that children should not be disadvantaged.
Cohabitation agreements
If you choose not to marry, a cohabitation agreement is crucial if you are co owning property or planning to live together long term. It can set out the financial contributions each party will make towards
“Whilst a pre-nup or cohabitation agreement may be an additional cost it should be viewed as an insurance policy to protect you if the worst happens.”
shared bills and mortgage payments and what will happen to property if the relationship ends. If only one party owns the property, the agreement can make clear whether it is intended for the other party to earn any rights to an interest in the property for example by contributing to the mortgage payments.
Pet- nups
Pets can often be an issue and the law treats them as if they are an item of property! However, within a pre-nup or cohabitation agreement, arrangements can be agreed as to pet related expenses and who will take the pet on should the relationship end, together with visitation arrangements for the other. Whilst a pre-nup or cohabitation agreement may be an additional cost it should be viewed as an insurance policy to protect you if the worst happens.
THE DETAILS
If you would like advice regarding making a pre-nup or cohabitation agreement, please contact Alison Hall in our family team on 01689 88788 or email cwj@cwj.co.uk www.cwj.co.uk

THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN YOUR AREA
Tips for parents with children starting secondary school
It’s a new life stage for kids and parents alike, says Claire Spreadbury.
It’s the end of an era when your child leaves primary school. Your life and support network have been intertwined within a community that’s always at the end of the phone – if not a WhatsApp message – but now big school is looming and it’s time to move on.
Some of that network moves on with you, but a lot of it won’t. And discovering the best ways to tackle secondary – and all the difficulties that can come with it – is often tricky. Arm yourself with these tips and you should breeze through.
Get them kitted out with epic new stationery
Smiggle might rule the school at primary, but once they’re 11, Stabilo pens and highlighters are top of the lust list, and Paperchase becomes your go-to. Pencil cases should be sleek and cool, and funky organisers and pads make the whole experience feel fresh.
Label everything
Once they’re starting secondary, everything seems to cost quite a bit more – the fancy stationery, the school bag, the uniform. To avoid pouring all that money down the drain, be sure to label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced. You can buy name stamps which don’t wash out, stickers which genuinely stay put or even grab a good old Sharpie and write on the labels.
Deck them out in cool shoes
When it comes to shoe buying on a budget shop online. And if they’re picky, the likes of Next and
Very let you order several pairs at once, so you can try them all on, return the ones you don’t want and only pay for the ones you do. Oh, and try Kickers. All the cool kids are in them.
Get the tech set-up right
We’ve all learned the hard way that homeschooling on shared tech is somewhat problematic. The good news, however, is live lessons are a breeze at secondary school, especially if they have their own computer. The Honor MagicBook 14 is ultra light and fast with an all-day battery and fast charging, all while minimising blue light by 50%. Google Chromebooks are also a dream, especially as most schools use Google Classroom.
Get to know other parents
When your child makes new friends, it’s much harder to get to know their parents. Lots of kids make their own way to school, and they have a phone to organise their own socials. This can feel a little bit worrying when your son or daughter is talking about going to a sleepover and you’ve never even met the child whose house they are staying at, let alone their mum or dad. Undoubtedly, this will get harder. You will be an embarrassing and interfering parent, so before they reach the Kevin The Teenager stage, try to get parents’ numbers, invite kids to your house, ask their mum or dad in when they come to pick them up – it can really help to reassure you.
Label everything, so you can claim it back if (when) it gets misplaced
Ready to Thrive
Bromley High School launches innovative Middle School to enhance girls’ transition from primary to secondary education
Bromley High School GDST has embarked on an innovative educational journey with the launch of a groundbreaking Middle School phase, designed to significantly ease the primary to secondary transition for its pupils. This initiative aims to address the often-daunting shift that young girls face during this critical period, focusing on fostering self-esteem and providing robust support structures.
Research consistently highlights the challenges that girls face during the move from primary to secondary education, often resulting in decreased self-esteem and heightened anxiety. The situation has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted crucial social and educational experiences.
Recognising these challenges, Bromley High School has reimagined the concept of a middle
school as a haven of security and growth, spanning from Year 5 to Year 8. This phase is meticulously designed to bridge the gap between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3, ensuring a smoother transition and a more cohesive educational journey.
Launched in March, the Middle School phase integrates bespoke curriculum elements and comprehensive pastoral support, starting earlier in Year 5 and continuing through Year 8. This approach aims to introduce and reinforce curriculum concepts progressively, alleviating anxiety and providing a clear educational trajectory leading up to GCSE options. This method ensures that pupils have a head start in making informed decisions for their future studies in the Senior School.
Central to the Middle School philosophy is the emphasis on personalised education tailored to each
girl’s unique needs and aspirations. By fostering a deeper understanding of each pupil, Bromley High School aims to create an environment where every girl can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. This approach is supported by ongoing professional development for teachers, focusing on research-based methods that cater to the crucial developmental years between ages 10-13.
A new wellbeing transition programme from Year 5 through to Year 7 has been implemented, focusing on developing self-advocacy and study skills. Delivered during form time and through discrete masterclasses, this programme empowers pupils with the independent learning skills necessary for success in a senior school environment. By eliminating the notion of the primary school “cliff edge,” the school fosters a sense of continuity and security.
The Middle School phase also introduces pastoral leadership opportunities for all year groups, along with whole-phase events such as trips, workshops, and vertical pastoral groups. These initiatives aim to build a strong sense of community and belonging across the years.
“Innovation for us isn’t about mere tokenism; it’s about meaningful change,” says Emily Rushton, Assistant Headteacher (Middle School). “We want to ensure that our girls feel supported and
empowered throughout their educational journey.”
Headmistress Emily Codling emphasises the broader vision behind this initiative: “At Bromley High School, we believe in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in girls’ education. Our Middle School isn’t just about academic advancement; it’s about nurturing a sense of sisterhood and belonging that extends across all years. We’re proud to be at the forefront of this initiative. By prioritising girls’ education in this way, we’re not just preparing them for the future; we’re shaping it.”
Student voice and experience are central to the Middle School initiative. The introduction of Middle School Ambassadors exemplifies this commitment. These ambassadors play a pivotal role in amplifying pupil voice through events like the “Middle School Factor” talent show, which brings together students from various year groups. They have also established a supportive “Middle School sister” network, easily identifiable by their purple jackets during breaks, offering assistance to peers. Additionally, these ambassadors lead phase assemblies and actively seek feedback to tailor the experience for all year groups, fostering a vibrant community where every student’s voice is heard and valued.
The introduction of the Middle School phase at Bromley High School marks a significant milestone in its commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience. By addressing the unique challenges of the primary to secondary transition, the school is not only preparing its pupils for academic success but also nurturing their personal growth and sense of community.
This innovative approach sets a new standard in girls’ education, ensuring that every pupil feels supported, empowered, and ready to thrive in their educational journey and beyond.
“At Bromley High School, we believe in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in girls’ education. Our Middle School isn’t just about academic advancement; it’s about nurturing a sense of sisterhood and belonging that extends across all years”

Be All You Can Be at Bickley Park
Tom Quilter – Headmaster at Bickley Park School tells us more
One of the things I am most proud of here at Bickley Park is our Four Quadrants of Learning - our broad and balanced curriculum that provides the framework for all we do at our happy school. The Four Quadrants embody our commitment to offer all our children such an extensive range of opportunities that we can identify, nurture and celebrate everyone’s talents, wherever they lie.
My greatest hope is that all our pupils make the most of every opportunity on offer here at the school and that their years at Bickley Park inspire them to say YES to things, to give them a go, to be brave. Our aim is for all our children to ‘BE ALL YOU CAN BE’, from Nursery right through to Year 8.
I have always been really taken with the Māori concept ‘ WHAKAPAPA’ - the strength we can take from our lineage. At Bickley Park we have fantastic links to our history and our founders and to all those who have been before and we aspire to link arms across the decades to all our new families and children who are yet to join us.
Our vision is to maintain the excellence of our 100-year-old Prep School with an ambitious, forward-thinking and nurturing outlook where the whole community lives our Values. Our children leave us as well rounded, confident individuals ready for their next steps into the wider world.
“Our
children leave us as well rounded, confident individuals ready for their next steps into the wider world”
Co-Ed Opportunity
Part of this vision is the school becoming coeducational, which I was delighted to announce recently. This exciting move gives families the opportunity to twin excellence with convenience, by sending all their children to Bickley Park to benefit from our high-quality all-round education and excellent pastoral care.
The needs of our pupils are at the heart of all our decisions, as the school continues to evolve and adapt. This is a natural development for the school that will bring positive benefits to the whole Bickley Park community.
Small Class Sizes and Outstanding Results at 11+ and 13+
From the moment a child starts their journey with us, we are determined to spark and nurture a lifelong love of learning in them. Whether they are busy learning Forest School skills, having fun in the mud kitchen, or out and about on trips that tie in with our creative curriculum, the children in our Nursery and Reception embrace every element of our unique Four Quadrants of Learning.
As children move through the school, our small class sizes ensure that we have the opportunity to explore, identify and celebrate the strengths of every child, no matter where they lie. Our priority is the children’s happiness in their learning and this in turn is reflected in their outstanding progress. Over the years, we have continued to enjoy excellent results at both 11+ and 13+, confident that the way we teach is excellent preparation for any entrance exam.
‘Excellent’ in all areas says the Independent Schools Inspectorate
It is this firm commitment to all-round success which led the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) to judge Bickley Park as ‘excellent’ in March 2023 for both pupils’ Achievement and pupils’ Personal Development, the highest possible grading for an Independent School. In addition, Bickley Park was named Prep School of the Year in 2021 for its ‘well-articulated, coherent and holistic Four Quadrants of Learning programme’.
This well-rounded learning experience encompasses Academics, Arts, Community, and Sports and Outdoor Learning. Together the Four Quadrants arm our pupils with skills for life: a love of learning; the ability to communicate confidently; the desire to contribute meaningfully to society and show initiative, resilience, teamwork, and the confidence to take risks.
“Our vision is to maintain the excellence of our 100-yearold Prep School with an ambitious, forward-thinking and nurturing outlook where the whole community lives our Values”
Fantastic Facilities
Both of our school sites boast excellent facilities which allow the children from Nursery through to the Senior Years to develop and excel. From the purpose-built science labs, art rooms and theatre through to the on-site swimming pool, climbing wall and astro-turf pitches, the school provides a breadth of opportunity both in and out of the classroom.
This Summer has seen the start of a dedicated development and refurbishment programme to realign the school infrastructure across our large site to ensure that all pupils continue to benefit from these excellent facilities at Bickley Park. The Pre-Prep has a fantastic new playground with new climbing equipment, slide and water play and the Prep Department has a new outside amphitheatre for teaching or quiet time at break.
We are ambitious for the next chapter in the fine history of our School and are thrilled to be extending our community to welcome girls, enhancing our strong family ethos by creating a fully co-educational community.
Bickley Park is holding a Whole School Open Morning on Friday 11th October from 9.15am until 12 noon.
I look forward to welcoming you then.

Recently, they introduced the concept of Flexible Classrooms. What initially started as an interesting trial has now been rolled out across the whole school. Pupils now have a choice of how they wish to sit in class: comfy seating with lap trays for individual iPad work, round tables perfect for collaborative brainstorming (complete with whiteboards to capture ideas visually), quiet zones with beanbags for those seeking sensory input, and designated areas for focused independent work or extra support from the teacher. This dynamic environment fosters deeper
“Hazelwood is an outstanding school with an exciting curriculum, phenomenal indoor and outdoor facilities, and a visionary approach to teaching and learning”
engagement among pupils. Interactive, hands-on lessons become the norm, motivating pupils to take ownership of their learning journey. The freedom to choose their learning environment sparks creativity and critical thinking. It is not uncommon to see children sitting in class on wobble chairs or on the floor using lap desks. Hazelwood knows that how one child learns best is not the same as the next child, and a one-sizefits-all approach does not work. This element of self-choice within a classroom setting has produced happier, more content children who are engaged in their learning. Teachers claim the energy in the room is greater, and the benefits
“In a world where everything is changing, Hazelwood is finding new ways to adapt to the individual and changing needs of pupils while still achieving impressive academic success and enrichment excellence”
are even seen in class assessment results, with one child achieving 22% higher in a maths test when he was able to use a standing desk to work. Another exciting new venture is the opening of the Ruth Bourne Building in September for Upper School children in Years 5-8. This new space will be a clean and modern environment for children to collaborate and learn. Space-saving furniture allows for an uncluttered working environment, collaboration zones allow for brainstorming and team discussions, and the inclusion of wipeable walls allows for free-flowing ideas to be shared and problems openly discussed. More akin to a modern office space, this environment will allow older pupils the space to truly engage and enjoy learning in a comfortable and contemporary setting.
A further change for September 2024 is the relocation of Hazelwood’s youngest reception children to the Wolf’s Hill site. Previously located with the nursery at Bluehouse Lane, the three reception classes will join the rest of the school community and enjoy the outstanding facilities on offer at the 25-acre site from the very beginning of their school journey. Extra parent parking, a new all-weather awning for year-round outdoor play, a sandpit, and a new forest school development area will be enjoyed by 4-5-year-olds in the new academic year.
Wellbeing at Hazelwood is another key focus of the school, as demonstrated by the opening of their Wellbeing Hub earlier this year. The hub provides a haven for children needing some time out to talk to a trained member of staff or
for valuable one-to-one learning. It is also a zone where children with extra learning needs can receive additional lesson time and care. Hazelwood is proving that education should not stand still. In a world where everything is changing, Hazelwood is finding new ways to adapt to the individual and changing needs of pupils while still achieving impressive academic success and enrichment excellence.

St Dunstan’s College The award-winning celebrates glowing inspection report
The school is one of the first in the country to receive two ‘significant strengths’ in ISI report
St Dunstan’s College, south-east London, is delighted to announce the findings of its latest inspection from the Independent Schools Inspectorate, carried out in April 2024.
St Dunstan’s is believed to be the first school in the country to receive two significant strengths as part of its inspection. This is an outstanding achievement.
Speaking about the report, St Dunstan’s Head, Nick Hewlett, said: ‘I am absolutely thrilled to share our new inspection report with our community.
‘We are one of the first schools in the whole country to receive two significant strengths, and I am delighted they recognise both our broad, forward-thinking, renaissance education and how diversity is embedded and celebrated in everything we do at St Dunstan’s.
“The report praised the broad and varied curriculums on offer to students at St Dunstan’s”
‘The report is testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment of the whole community and I pay tribute to staff, students and our families who make St Dunstan’s such a special and unique place to be. We are truly an independent school like no other, and I am proud of our place within Lewisham and the sector.’
The report praised the broad and varied curriculums on offer to students at St Dunstan’s, explaining: ‘Leaders have put in place an ambitious, timetabled curriculum which provides extensive opportunities for pupils to acquire the broadest of learning experiences. Leaders have taken great care in the design of this multi-faceted programme which is included as part of the school day.
‘There are four separate strands; together these provide the full range of curriculum subjects, an extensive offering of broader learning experiences,
a programme of teaching skills for the future and one that focuses on building pupils’ wellbeing and self-awareness. The breadth and relevance of this curriculum and leaders’ decision that all pupils participate in these opportunities, is a significant strength.’
The second ‘significant strength’ applauded the school’s dedication to celebrating diversity within the school.
‘The school’s ethos supports leaders in creating a strong community where diversity is celebrated,’ the report found. ‘This works through many facets of school life: through the curriculum, through the varied groups in school, led by pupils which celebrate diversity, and through producing events such as the annual St Dunstan’s festival. All these promote respect and understanding among the pupils for everyone in their own school and in the wider local community. This is a significant strength of the school.’
St Dunstan’s approach to learning was commended in the report, adding it prepares pupils for the future.
‘The school’s wide-ranging and imaginative curriculum offers a broad learning experience for all its pupils, developing their breadth of knowledge and understanding well.’
It adds: ‘Pupils develop their skills, selfunderstanding and aspiration. This approach prepares pupils very well for their future lives.’
The report also praised the St Dunstan’s Diapason which aims to promote and celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion at the College.
‘There is a whole-school ethos and culture of promoting respect, kindness and tolerance amongst its pupils and staff. The school’s leaders have established an approach which focuses on race, sex and gender, sexual orientation, religion and belief and disability and ensures that appropriate representation and respect is allocated to all,’ the report explains.
‘This programme gives opportunities for pupils to champion and raise awareness of different characteristics, and promote respect for all in the community. The pupils’ contribution is a crucial element of this programme. Pupils lead the way with their initiatives, such as their college parliament and the organisation of the annual festival that celebrates identity and achievement and involves the local community. The result is a thoughtful school community of genuine diversity, driven by a joint approach from staff and pupils.’
The inspection report comes at an exciting time for St Dunstan’s. This summer, the College celebrated its best A Level and GCSE results in its 136-year history. 88% of all A Level grades achieved were A*- B with an outstanding 61% being A - A* and 27% being A*.
Following the historic results, 97% of the cohort will be heading to their chosen destination, which includes 100% success for students holding an offer for Oxbridge, medicine, music conservatoires, art foundation or drama school. Meanwhile, Year 11 students also achieved recordbreaking results in their summer examinations. 90% of all GCSE grades were 9-6, equivalent to A*-B, with an exceptional 78% being 9-7, which is A*- A, and 53% 9-8, which is the former A*.
Earlier this year, the College was named Most Progressive School in south-east England at the Private Education Awards and in 2022, was named Independent Senior School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards, which are known as the Oscars of education.

Rosemead Looks to the Future Dulwich’s leading prep school celebrates recent success
Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery, Dulwich, south London, is celebrating after a triumphant year, which included a brilliant report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) and a Good Schools Guide review, which commended the school as the ‘one to watch’.
The ISI inspection praised Rosemead’s ambitious approach to learning, pastoral care and the support of individual pupil progress, as a consequence of the positive influence brought to bear by the school’s values, vision and leadership.
‘A highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress is a significant strength of the school,’ the report explained. ‘A customised learning programme in mathematics, English and reasoning caters for pupils in Year 4 and above. This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals,
impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.’
Speaking about the report, Head of Rosemead, Graeme McCafferty explained: ‘I am absolutely thrilled with our outstanding recent inspection report’
‘One standout strength that truly shines through is our highly customised approach to every child’s academic progress. The report highlighted our dedication to tailoring personal learning programs for each child, particularly in Maths, English, VR, and NVR.’
Graeme added: ‘What’s more, our extensive learning support programme ensures that every individual in our school community not only succeeds but thrives. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to providing the best possible education for every child at Rosemead, and I couldn’t be prouder of our school’s achievement.’
“‘One standout strength that truly shines through is our highly customised approach to every child’s academic progress. The report highlighted our dedication to tailoring personal learning programs for each child, particularly in Maths, English, VR, and NVR’”
Rosemead’s early years’ provision was also praised in the summary findings. ‘Leaders in the early years effectively ensure staff have high expectations of the behaviour and achievement of children,’ the report found. ‘The positive relationships between adults and children in the early years help children settle in quickly and feel safe and happy.’
It added: ‘Children in the early years achieve well from their varied starting points. Adults engage with the children effectively and use appropriate questioning to develop children’s vocabulary and understanding. Children from an early age become confident speakers and develop their reading skills well.’
The report comes at an exciting time for Rosemead. Last year, the school announced a merger with St Dunstan’s College joining St Dunstan’s Education Group.
Nick Hewlett, Head of St Dunstan’s, said: ‘The whole community is delighted with the ISI inspection for Rosemead. The report rightly recognises the outstanding education Rosemead is offering as one of south London’s leading prep schools. Bringing our schools together has been a wonderful opportunity, allowing our staff and students to work closer together, learning from one another and enhancing the educational journey of our pupils.
Rosemead is also celebrating after a visit from the Good Schools Guide which praised the school’s leadership and its future direction.
‘With a head and staff who are emotionally engaged with, and academically ambitious for, their pupils, there is no doubt that children here are happy and make excellent progress,’ the review explained. ‘They (pupils) are attentive, polite and delightfully entertaining.’
THE DETAILS

The review adds: ‘A parent told us, ‘At the age of four, it is impossible to know who your child will be or where his or her interests and strengths will lie at 11.’ Here, the school, parents and children go on that journey of discovery together, so that when the time comes the right choices are made.
‘We think Rosemead is definitely ‘one to watch’ as it carves out a specific niche in this corner of London.’
In June, the school was also delighted to receive an award at the prestigious Education Choices Award, winning for best Improvements in EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging).
Speaking about the news, Head Graeme said: ‘The whole school is thrilled to receive this award. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to providing the best possible education for every child at Rosemead’
‘My heartfelt thanks go to the staff, pupils and parents who have been on this journey with us across the last year.’

Girls’ Futures Young Women Need Life Skills Now More Than Ever
Antonia Geldeard, Head, Sydenham High School, GDST
Gone are the days when a ‘good degree’ and ‘the milkround’ delivered successful employment results. With competition in the top tier of universities growing ever greater and the global economy becoming increasingly competitive, making informed choices and equipping young people with careers guidance has never been more necessary.
According to the GDST Girls’ Futures Research, nationally, 39% of young women have stated that they feel negatively about their futures. This is not surprising given the level of preparedness that is now required by employers looking for the very best candidates.
Whilst parents may recognise the importance of preparation, the world of futures and employment is fast changing, and guidance is key. Schools must upscale their education to include life skills as well as more individual and knowledgeable careers’ provision. Careers cannot be a ‘tick box’ exercise taught by those with a spare period. It must be well informed, personalised, specialised and current. Technological advances allow pupils access to a wealth of information which can broaden understanding and knowledge; however, the widespread access to software such as ChatGPT is pushing universities and employers to require additional testing to ascertain accurate levels
“I am committed to opening the eyes and minds of our girls to the myriad of opportunities and possibilities out there. Children can only aspire to what they know exists; they must see themselves in future opportunities”
and introduce AI filtering of academic results, experience or key attributes before a candidate even reaches interview stage.
I am committed to opening the eyes and minds of our girls to the myriad of opportunities and possibilities out there. Children can only aspire to what they know exists; they must see themselves in future opportunities. A whole school (4 - 18 years) futures programme, without limits, is key. Though we have seen Barbie the figure skater, rock star or fashion designer, shift to ‘Robotics Engineer Barbie’ and ‘Renewable Energy Engineer Barbie’, women remain underrepresented in senior leadership positions by 4 to 1 (McKinsey, 2023) and, this report highlights, the issue is not so much about a ‘glass ceiling’ as a ‘broken rung’ in the ladder.
Alongside an inspirational, academic education, I believe in equipping young women with ‘power skills’ to navigate the employment world ahead.
One young woman I taught recounted a story of new recruits at a top firm being asked how much of the job specification they felt they could do; she noted that the young men tended to reply that they could do all that was listed, whereas some women quantified what they could do by their areas of previous experience. She recognised the need to project confidence in the workplace, without unwarranted bluster. Power skills should enable more of an equitable field from which to start, instilling an aptitude for problem solving, creative and analytical thinking, networking, presentational skills, business acumen as well as a practical approach to life’s moments of failure.
The World Economics Forum and employment experts state that two-fifths of the core skills workers have today ‘will be disrupted by technological change by 2027’. The IMF recognises that such ‘technological revolution offers much potential to jumpstart productivity and global growth.’ It could also remove jobs and amplify inequality. As educators, we need to start early with informed conversations, to ‘lean in’ and to collaborate, and consider ways to prepare our young people for their futures in a purposeful, not pressurised, environment.
The average graduate is expected to move through up to 12 different jobs in their lifetime. Therefore, to sustain a non-linear career, our young people will need to be lifelong learners; they will need to be ever critical, flexible, proactive and, importantly, connected.

Know your breasts!
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and is not exclusive to women. Approximately, 1 in 8 women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime and about 370 men will be diagnosed every year.
Being aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer is important as it can help diagnose cancer quickly and ultimately save lives. You may be surprised to know then that, according to a survey by Breast Cancer Care, a fifth of women don’t know how to check their breasts and a third are not checking regularly.
The best way to get to know your breasts and what is normal for you, is to look and feel them regularly. There is not a special way in which you should feel your breasts, so do this in a way that is comfortable for you but make sure you check your armpits and all the way up to your collar bone too.
When looking for signs and symptoms of breast cancer, most people know to look for a lump but there are many other symptoms to be aware of:
• A lump or swelling in the breast, chest, or armpit
• Changes to the skin, such as dimpling or puckering
• Alterations in breast colour, such as redness or inflammation
• Changes in the size or shape of the breast
• Thickened or denser breast tissue
• Changes in the nipple, including inversion
• Rash or crusting on or around the nipple
• Nipple discharge
• Persistent breast pain or pain in the armpit
At Sevenoaks Medical Centre, you have access to a one-stop Breast Clinic. Their team of specialists will be able to walk you through the process, answer any questions and make your experience as stress-free as possible. If you are concerned, it is always best to get seen as early diagnosis can make a big difference to treatment.

Family-first approach to swimming lessons
A learn-to-swim scheme in Sevenoaks is making waves among local families for its “family-first approach.”
Everyone Active – the leisure operator for Sevenoaks Leisure Centre– hosts its award-winning swimming lessons at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre and help hundreds of children every day to learn to be confident in water.
Aside from being a fun activity, swimming provides many physical health benefits such as improved strength, stamina and balance, helping children of all ages and abilities to stay happy and healthy.
“We are a small, loyal team that put our swimmers first,” says Mark Horne, Swimming Coach and Swim Manager at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre. “This allows us to not only know all the children by first name, but also the parents, achieving a family-first approach. It’s completely natural for parents to be nervous for their child to begin swimming lessons but, as not all children learn at the same rate, we adapt our lessons as needed for each child, suggesting one to one sessions if needed.
“Swimming is not only a great form of low impact sport for people with a wide range of conditions, but
is one of the most important life skills we can teach children - not only as a very inclusive sport, but as a safety skill which will stay with them for life.”
Recognising the benefits of the classes, Olivia, mother of 3-year-old Kitty, said: “Kitty’s confidence has grown so much since her lessons began. At first, she struggled to get into the water without me, but by week two she was jumping into the pool! Kitty’s teacher is always encouraging the children, and no one is ever left out as all abilities are catered for.”
For Kitty, learning to swim has helped her confidence and sense of feeling safe around water. She said: “I can swim on my own now - I love jumping in and it’s my goal to improve on this. Every time I visit the pool, whether it’s during class or with my family, my confidence grows even more!”

For our mothers, for our fathers, for our KYN.
At KYN, our homes are designed with our own family in mind. Each day invites joy, comfort and independence, supporting residents to live their best lives no matter their age. A care home we’d be proud to choose for our own.

Choosing the Right Care Home
Selecting a care home is a major decision, much like choosing your first home. Residents and families often say they know a place is right because “it just feels right.” While trusting your instincts is important, combining emotion with logic ensures a well-rounded decision.
Here are some key things to consider when selecting the right care environment for you or your loved one:
1. Staff’s attitude and engagement. Are staff friendly, smiling, and approachable? A positive environment often reflects the quality of care. Ask about training too – homes with welltrained staff typically have higher resident satisfaction.
2. Residents’ wellbeing. Do the residents appear clean, well-dressed, and engaged in activities? Happy residents usually indicate good care. Speaking to residents or their families can provide valuable insight.
3. Safe and clean environment. While looks aren’t everything, the home should be clean, safe, and appropriate for your loved one’s needs. According to a recent study, care homes with a higher cleanliness rating had a 20% higher resident satisfaction rate.
4. Inspection Results. Review the Care Quality Commission (CQC) report for an independent assessment of the home’s quality. Go beyond the overall rating and pay attention to the report’s observations in areas that feel most important to you.
5. Reviews. Carehome.co.uk, known as the “Tripadvisor for care homes,” provides reviews
from current residents and their families. According to a recent survey, 84% of careseekers found these reviews helpful in making their decision.
6. Type of provider. At Greensleeves Care, we are a not-for-profit provider. This means we have no shareholders or dividends to pay, so every penny goes into supporting award-winning 24/7 care. It also means we do not ask any of our residents to leave if their funds run out. With a wide range of care providers, it can help to hone in on those with values that align with yours.

Your Journey to Realizing Your Dream Home
Designing and building your dream home is a journey best undertaken with the guidance of experienced professionals.
Tony Cheeseman, Founder and Director of IQ Property Services, is one such expert. In a recent interview on the Bromley Buzz podcast (available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Audible, etc.), Tony shared his insights on how IQ Property Services helps clients transform their home aspirations into reality.
“IQ Property Services will guide you from the moment you decide to refurbish a house or build a new one on a plot, right through to the day you receive the keys and step into your beautiful new home,” Tony explains. “It’s an exciting journey, but it’s essential to have the right advice along the way, and that’s where we come in.”
He emphasizes the importance of understanding the “unknown unknowns” that often arise in these projects. “We guide you through the process, helping you avoid the pitfalls that can occur. From the outset, we sit down with our clients to discuss their wish lists. How do they envision living in their home? What are the key functions and features they desire? This initial step is crucial in shaping the design and infrastructure of the house to meet the client’s vision.”
Tony advises partners to develop their wish lists separately to ensure all individual desires are captured.
“Understanding each person’s unique vision allows us to create a home that truly reflects their dreams.”
IQ Property Services has built a reputation over the last 25 years for turning client wishes into reality with clarity and efficiency. Their long-standing relationships with clients and fellow professionals, like Scott Nicholson of Chamber Furniture in Kent, highlight their expertise. “Their ability to bring clarity to complex projects is invaluable,” says Scott. “They make everything run more smoothly.”
If you’re considering a design and build service for your next project, Tony and the team at IQ Property Services offer the expertise to make your dream home a reality. Contact Tony for a noobligation chat at 01959 533788.

Trend-led vs Timeless
With a Ripples bathroom design specialist
Be bold with a trend-led look or keep things classic with a timeless scheme? Senior Designer from Ripples Tunbridge Wells, Matilda, gives her thoughts on whether trend-led or timeless designs are best when it comes to bathrooms.
Trend led
Historically, bathrooms were driven by functionality rather than style and luxury, however, today’s bathrooms are all about merging all these elements to create a fun, stimulating and personalised environment in which to spend time. A bathroom should reflect your unique individuality and flair by including a range of materials, colours and textures and shouldn’t be restricted by the status quo of a ‘timeless’ design.
“By interestingly configuring tiles, you can create a look which is unique to you, even if you’re using the must-have tile of the moment”
As a designer, developing a scheme based on trending concepts can be incredibly exciting for Matilda, allowing her to explore her client’s personality and incorporate it into a one-ofa-kind space. Her favourite way to embrace trends within a bathroom design is through tiling, with a feature tile being a fantastic way to introduce a popular colour, texture, or pattern. By interestingly configuring tiles, you can create a look which is unique to you, even if you’re using the must-have tile of the moment. You can also incorporate trends through painted furniture or even a painted bath, allowing you to embrace the most sought-after colour.
Timeless
Some people might consider a timeless style to be a safe option, however, it doesn’t have to be bland. Marble, for example, is an ageless material but it can also be bright and bold and can add interest and colour to a space. Equally, a rolltop bath in copper or tin is a classic choice but can also create a big style statement within your room, making the space anything but dull.
With a timeless design, it is all about focusing on high-quality products that are known for their longevity rather than popular fads which can quickly date. Investing in quality sanitaryware and classically shaped brassware will ensure your bathroom will not only stand the test of time but will always remain in style. Brassware finishes such as chrome and brushed nickel might not be the newest on the market, but the beauty lies in how understated they are and the elegance they can bring to the room.

A Touch of Glass
As we move further into 2024, glass remains a pivotal material in interior design, celebrated for its delicate nature and timeless appeal. Brands like Brokis, Gallotti & Radice, Fiam Italia, and Glas Italia are leading the charge, each offering distinct interpretations that range from minimalist to avant-garde. Whether through the sculptural forms of dining tables, the low-lines of coffee tables, or the poetic luminosity of lighting, these brands are showcasing that glass as a material is the crystal clear-choice for contemporary living spaces. Glass is here to stay, and it is more innovative and elegant than ever. Enjoy this transparent list of the greatest in Glass and where to start building with one of natures most delicate materials.
DINING TABLES:
Gallotti & Radice perfects the art of large-scale minimalism with their dining tables utilising clean, sleek lines. The use of clear and smoked glass in the Platium table creates a sophisticated, almost ethereal appearance. The combination of glass with metal accents, particularly in gold or brass finishes, adds warm classic luxury to the otherwise modern designs. If you’re looking to go a step further and Fiam Italia’s Ragno dining table is a veritable masterpiece of glasswork. Almost as if it were carved from a singular block of marble and the table was found within.
COFFEE TABLES:
Glas Italia’s coffee tables are a celebration of playful geometry, featuring bold shapes and unexpected angles. This year, the focus is on transparency and colour contrast, with many designs incorporating clear and tinted glass in striking combinations. This is emphasised perfectly in the Shimmer coffee table. Alternatively, Fiam Italia continues to explore organic, flowing shapes in their coffee tables, which are often inspired by natural elements. The brand’s use of curved glass creates soft, uniquely stunning forms that add a sense of movement to living spaces. The Atlas coffee table is a prime example of this with a singular linear curve running through the surface that smoothens your space.
LIGHTING:
Brokis remains at the forefront of lighting design with their poetic, hand-blown glass lights that blend artisanal craftsmanship with the efficiency of modern technology. Their lighting collections focus on organic shapes and natural materials. There is a noticeable trend toward using opal glass, which diffuses light softly, creating a warm, inviting ambiance with pieces such as the Geomteric collection, that utilises beautiful shapes and unique patterns to match the inviting glow of the light itself. While they traditional work with glass, they recently have begun the integration of wood with
their pieces to further display their ability mix the delicate and the durable, this can be seen in the new wooden version of their flagship “Muffins Lamp” a beautiful collaboration between two materials synonymous with luxury interiors.
If you would like to see one of the largest collections of Brokis in the UK then a quick visit to second floor of the Chaplins Furniture showroom in Northwest London would prove to be an enlightening experience. From the latest luminary solutions to stalwarts of the Brokis catalogue that provided them a platform to build their prestige in the glasswork world. You’re likely to see some stunning pieces from the other brands mentioned in this article along the way with 180+ iconic and innovative brands available. chaplins.co.uk

FIVE REASONS TO
GO FIBREGLASS
Looking for the highest quality swimming pool? Think Fibreglass.
When considering installing a swimming pool, there are many factors that will dictate whether they choose fibreglass, concrete, or vinyl liner. Although each type of pool has its own pros and cons, in this article we would like to focus on five benefits of choosing a fibreglass pool for your home…
Fibreglass Pools are Easy to Install
During the installation process, both concrete and vinyl liner pools can be affected by changes in temperature, rain and other weather elements, but with fibreglass, the installation is rarely affected by these unpredictable factors due to the fibreglass shell being constructed off site.
“Fibreglass pools are known to last decades and still look as good as they did when they were first installed”
Fibreglass Pools are Low Maintenance
It has become an accepted fact in the swimming pool industry that fibreglass pools are easier to maintain, especially when compared to a concrete swimming pool. One of the great things about fibreglass pools is the finish, a smooth and shiny surface that makes for easy cleaning and minimal maintenance. Algae (which any pool owner knows can be a menace if not treated regularly with chemicals) is less likely to be able to stick to the smooth gel coat surface, which makes it less of a nuisance. In addition, gel coating is skin-friendly, if you rub against it while you’re swimming or exercising, you will glide smoothly over its surface, and for places where you need to grip, like stairs and walkways, there is a non-skid application. Fibreglass is very hardy in the face of UK weather conditions, so it will stand the test of time, very much like the hull of a boat.
Fibreglass Pools are Environmentally Friendly
Fiberglass pools are very thermally efficient, which means your pool will hold a steady temperature and will cost you less to heat. You’ll also buy fewer chemicals than a traditional pool requires, which is good for your pocket environment and your body.
Fibreglass Pools have a long Lifespan
Fibreglass lasts – that is a fact that shouldn’t be missed. Unlike liner pools that will gradually deteriorate over time, this isn’t the case with fibreglass pools. Fibreglass pools are known to last decades and still look as good as they did when they were first installed. The warranties available for these pools reflect this level of commitment and faith in the product.

Fibreglass Pools are easily installed
If you have limited access to get the pool into your preferred space, this is not a problem, pools made out of fibreglass can be delivered and then craned to the site. What’s more, fibreglass pools are very quick install, you’ll be swimming, exercising, and relaxing in your own within days.

Are you considering a new patio, driveway, pathway, or pool surround? Let’s explore the innovative offerings of one of Europe’s leading manufacturers: MBI, a familyowned Dutch company renowned for its precision cast concrete products. Based just across the channel in the Netherlands, MBI is celebrated for its aesthetic appeal, low environmental impact, and cost-effective solutions.
MBI’s extensive range includes ceramic-faced paving designed for quick unbound installation on a sand bed, like traditional block paving. The variety of plan and thickness sizes makes it a versatile choice for all outdoor projects. Additionally, their products come in numerous non-repeating designs, ensuring a unique and attractive appearance. Each piece is coated with a weather and UV-proof finish that remains colour-fast and resists staining, ensuring long-lasting beauty.
One of the standout features of MBI’s products is their innovation. They offer block paving that retains its fresh and attractive look for many years, and walling blocks available in several sizes that can be seamlessly glued together for a tight, all but seamless finish.
MBI’s commitment to sustainability is evident in their manufacturing processes. The factories are powered entirely by on-site windmills and solar panels, reflecting their dedication to green energy. They utilise a proprietary high-strength concrete with low cement content, reducing the environmental footprint normally associated with cement. Compared this to fired clay pavers, which have a significant
environmental impact because require significant gas to fire.
In contrast, MBI’s concrete simply cures and is ready for use, making it an ecofriendlier option.
The ease of installation is another significant advantage.
The unbound laying method allows for rapid installation, often exceeding 100 square metres per day. This process is not only efficient but also flexible, enabling work to continue regardless of low temperatures or rain once the perimeter has been set.
Given these benefits, it’s no wonder that architects and designers in the UK are increasingly turning to MBI’s precision cast products. They provide a perfect combination of beauty, environmental responsibility, and budget-friendly solutions, making it possible to deliver stunning and sustainable outdoor projects efficiently.

Storage Solutions for Everyone
Schmidt have a huge number of storage solutions for every wallet
3different types of larder, extra wide/deep and high base units (3D fit), floor to ceiling options, and up to 3 made-to-measure units (from certain ranges) at no extra cost. Larders: The open-shelf cabinet is a good, solid entry level cabinet with adjustable shelves, the Pantry cabinet gives easy access via shelving and door storage, while the Larder cabinet is the ultimate in storage – full extension, individual pull out drawers mean that everything is instantly accessible and visible, with no void necessary above the shelf to lift items out.
Evolution 130: Instead of the normal 5-drawer base unit, Schmidt have raised the height of their standard base unit to 78cm (usually 72cm) which has enabled them to fit an extra drawer into the unit. A 6-drawer format means it is much easier to create a streamlined kitchen as well: 1 deep drawer & 3 shallow; 3 medium; 1 deep, 1 medium and 1 shallow – the options are many, but the horizontal lines will flow in perfect symmetry with other units in the kitchen. The extra height unit also caters for the taller profile of most kitchen users today.
3D Fit: With plinth heights from 7cm to 20cm, Unit heights from 52cm to 91cm, 4 different depths,
and bespoke widths to the nearest millimetre, every single inch of available space in the kitchen can be utilised. Whether you are 5 foot nothing, or 6 foot 7 inches – the height can work for you! Schmidt’s standard 67.5cm base unit is joined by 3 other depths: 35, 62.5 and a jumbo 70cm unit – which can achieve up to 26% more storage, and of course more worktop space as well.

A Time of Transition and New Beginnings
As we step into September, the gardening year reaches a pivotal moment. The warm days of summer are fading, and while the weather can be unpredictable—ranging from crisp autumnal breezes to a final burst of heat—there’s still plenty to do in the garden. It’s a month that straddles the seasons, offering both the last of summer’s vibrance and the early promise of autumn.
At our garden centre, we’re embracing this transitional period with a range of new offers to help you prepare for the changing seasons. Whether you’re tidying up after a busy growing season or planning for next year, we have everything you need.
September is the perfect time to divide your herbaceous perennials. Doing this now will ensure your plants remain healthy, vigorous, and plentiful for seasons to come. If you have a pond, netting it before the autumn leaf fall reduces the risk of debris clogging your water, keeping it clear
and healthy. It’s also an excellent time to clean out your cold frames and greenhouses, ready for autumn sowing and growing. And don’t forget to plant your springflowering bulbs—daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths—to ensure a beautiful display of colour next year.
September weather is famously unpredictable, with fewer sunshine hours and increased rainfall. But even as the days shorten, there’s something magical about the cooler air and golden light. For many gardeners, this is the time to reflect on the past year, review what worked, and make plans for the future. Whether you’re rethinking plant pairings or planning a fresh bulb display, this month is all about preparing for the next cycle.
Whatever your gardening needs this September, we’re here to help you make the most of this transitional season. Happy gardening!

We understand the unique constraints and challenges of smaller spaces and have a wealth of solutions, including creating terracing, recesses, and sunken areas. These sculpt the illusion of more space through height, depth, and a varied perspective. Then we can add flowers and shrubs for contrast, colour and texture. This approach works just as well for commercial premises if they have borders, lawns, car parks or other spaces ready to be transformed. If you own a business, why not enhance your local area and help your staff and passers-by to see and enjoy a new oasis instead of bare tarmac or plain grass?
such as gardens can have a ‘wow factor’ as much as any evening dress, well-tailored suit, or bespoke artwork. One striking example is Victorian tiling. Known as renowned builders and engineers, the Victorians created long-lasting, beautifully patterned and coloured tiling installations that made many homes memorable. Today, we honour their craft as it lives and breathes in the capable hands of our craftsmen who are specialists in the design and fitting of Victorian floor tiles and contemporary geometric designs. We have many years of experience in the repair and care of traditional Victorian black and white path tiles and in the myriad of Victorian mosaic tile schemes.”
“We can transform spaces as small as a window box or as large as a football pitch, and beyond!”
“Admittedly, we have never been called out to plant up a single window box, but perhaps we might! Our pleasure comes from our ability to unlock the potential of any outdoor space and seeing the reaction of our clients, as they understand the joy that transformation can give them.
“To take another example, people love a ‘wow factor’, having something special to them that feels unique and makes them stand out. Outdoor spaces

Protect the Environment
JD Allen Engineering Ltd started installing solar PV systems almost three years ago, designing and installing solar photovoltaic (PV) projects for both domestic and commercial properties, electrical energy storage systems (batteries), EV chargers and have a certified electrician onboard who offers electrical services in South London and the Southeast of England.
How Solar PV (photovoltaics) work
During daylight hours, solar panels capture light and passes it through the inverter as DC current. The inverter then converts it into electricity you can use to power your home (AC current). Excess generation can be sold back to the grid or, if a battery is installed, can be stored to be used later in the day.
Inverters come in different sizes and types. Microinverters allow for the possibility of shading on your panels and different roof orientations. For a battery with your solar PV system, a hybrid inverter is ideal as it links directly to the battery.
AC-coupled inverters work with batteries only, which can be used to utilise off-peak electricity tariffs.
Optimisers can be added to the array which will help when the panels are slightly shaded at times in the day as they will maximise the energy generated.
The warranties offered for inverters and batteries are generally between 5 and 15 years, with the option of
extending the warranty in some cases for a fee.
When seeking a solar installer, please review the MCS website which provides a list of certified installers in your area. As with all home improvement projects, we recommend that you get at least 3 quotes for the work. This way, not only can you compare prices, but different installers will have different ideas of what is right for your property, so you can compare the products and designs that are suggested for the project.
MCS solar installers will issue you with an MCS certificate at the end of the installation which your electricity supplier will need to see before they will allow you to sell your excess electricity to them (via the Smart Export Guarantee)
All in all, there is a solar PV or battery option for most households and budgets. Please contact JD Allen Engineering for a chat about your options.
