Separation & Divorce:

Q&A

KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE Choose a trusted ELECTRICIAN For all your electrical needs ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖

Domestic & commercial Full or partial rewires Fault finding and repairs Periodic inspection & testing Landlord certificates Extensions & renovations Mains smoke alarms External lighting & repairs Kitchen & bathroom electrics Emergency call out

My husband and I have been separated for 6 months. We do not want to divorce yet but we would like to resolve our finances. How should we do this? You should try to reach an agreement between you about how to divide the family finances and sign a Deed of Separation setting out this agreement. The Deed would include a clause that you both agree to a divorce in the future and agree to be held to the Deed’s terms by recording them within a Consent Order when you divorce. A Deed of Separation is usually binding in future divorce proceedings, unless there is a significant change in circumstances. You should both seek independent legal advice and give full financial disclosure to ensure that the Deed is as binding as possible. I recently separated from my spouse and want to petition for divorce. What do I need to prove and how long will it take? To obtain a divorce you must prove that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. You can do this by proving one of five grounds; adultery, unreasonable behaviour, two years separation with your spouse’s consent, five years separation without consent, or desertion. To petition on the ground of ‘unreasonable behaviour’ you will need to give examples of behaviour by your spouse that you find unreasonable. A divorce usually takes between 5 and 6 months in straightforward cases. Finances will be dealt with separately to the divorce and the Decree Absolute (final divorce) is often deferred until the finances have been resolved. How will the family assets be divided on divorce? All assets held in the joint and sole names of the parties will be matrimonial assets. These include the matrimonial home, income, savings, pensions, personal belongings, investments and any other assets, such as the family business. The starting point will be an equal division of the matrimonial assets between you and your spouse. The court will then look at whether this is fair in light of the length of the marriage, needs of the children, income and earning capacity of the parties, and age and needs of the parties. The needs of the children needs will always take priority.

Tenterden One of the most charming towns in the south east, Tenterden is a great place to visit and explore. Little wonder it is known as, “The Jewel of the Weald.” WORDS: MAUREEN COLE

T

his attractive market town is perched on the edge of the Weald, on a plateau of rising ground. The first mention of the town dates back to 968 when it was mentioned in a Charter. However, there is no mention of Tenterden in the Domesday Book (1086).

The name Tenterden can be traced back to the Old English,” Tenet wava- den,” meaning, “the pasture or forest clearing belonging to the men of Thanet.” In the 13th century the wool trade dominated the town and brought with it considerable wealth. To the south of the town and on Romney Marsh the land provided valuable grazing for sheep and there was a great demand for the wool produced, on the Continent. Tenterden benefitted from its good position and transport facilities for the wool. In 1332 however, Edward 111 prohibited the export of unwashed wool and he invited fullers, weavers and dyers from the Continent, to come to England and teach the English their crafts. Tenterden and some neighbouring villages soon became important for their broadcloth making- an industry which

flourished in the area for over 350 years. Before the great storms of the 15th century silted up the River Rother, Tenterden was linked to the sea and became an important ship building centre and trading port. In 1449 Tenterden became one of the Cinque Ports and was important in supplying ships and men to fight against the French. In the 14th century the small ports of Smallhythe and Reading Street (just outside the town) were used to transport timber from the Wealden Forest for building ships. In so doing, Tenterden received many privileges, which went with being a Cinque Port, such as exemption from National taxation and having its own court and judicial system. Sadly during the 15th and 16th centuries the Romney Marshes gradually silted up and the town’s maritime trade disappeared. It is believed that the parish church of St Mildred may date to as far back as AD 750-850, with a settlement growing up around it. However the first written reference appeared in 1240. The oldest parts of the church date back to the 13th century and include the chancel and the south arcade of the nave. The beautiful great west tower, which was built between 1449 and 1495, is 33m high and is constructed of Bethesden marble. The town has a variety of shops, ranging from major supermarkets to quaint antique

shops and small boutiques. Tenterden High Street is a great place to spend time, browse the shops and maybe make those special buys, especially with Christmas just around the corner. Along with the shops there are some great places to visit and things to do and an impressive selection of places to eat and drink. Tea rooms, traditional pubs and inns and quality restaurants, offer a range of dining experiences and food from around the world. Tenterden is home to the Kent and Sussex Steam Railway, which runs from Tenterden and Bodiam Castle and is a must for steam train enthusiasts. From the railway, which opened in 1900, steam and diesel trains run through the beautiful countryside of Kent and East Sussex to Bodiam in East Kent. There are various events and theme days throughout the year to be enjoyed. I tried The Wealden Pullman, which offers a truly unique experience with its fine dining and sense of time past. The railway has been used in several films and dramas. In 1996 it appeared in, “Jude” and more recently, in 2010, in an episode of, “Downton Abbey.

There are some interesting historic places to visit as well. Smallhythe Place is a quaint 16th century, half-timbered house, which was purchased by Ellen Terry, a renowned Victorian actress in 1897. It has had a varied history ranging from Tenterden’s early ship building days. For 250 years it served as a working farm before becoming Ellen Terry’s home. The thatched barn, which is housed within the pretty gardens of Smallhythe Place, was built in the late 1600’s and now houses the 80 seater, Barn Theatre, which opened in 1929 and was the brainchild of Ellen Terry’s daughter, Edith Craig. Barn Theatre Productions run a programme of events including music, theatre, and children’s events. Tenterden and District Museum opened in 1976 in an old weatherboard building, originally built in 1850, as a stable and storehouse. The museum, which is located in Station Road, now houses a broad collection of items relating to the local area. It is a small museum, stacked with exhibits, which provide an insight into life in Tenterden over the years. The museum is run on a voluntary basis and records the town’s fascinating history,

L O C A L L I F E including hop- picking, farming and the Cinque Ports. Amid the breath-taking countryside is Tenterden Golf Club. In 1905 a small group of local farmers and business men laid out a 9 hole Golf Course at Leigh Green, Tenterden – on what was once a hop farm. In 1920 the club moved to its present site and in 1991 additional land was purchased and the 18 hole golf course was opened. The friendly club can accommodate players at all levels and there is even a Golf Academy on site with all the latest teaching aids. Tenterden also has a Folk Festival each year .This is a four day long festival of folk song, music and dance, which takes place in October each year at various venues around the town.. Among the many events included are concerts, sing-a rounds, music sessions and special shows. There are also dance displays by Morris men and other folk dancers. In 2015 the Folk Festival is planned to run on Thursday 1st October- Sunday 4th October. With so much beautiful countryside and interesting things to see and do, it is little wonder that Tenterden is regarded as, “The Jewel of the Weald.”

RELOCATED

MARKS & SPENCER Sevenoaks is officially unveiled

T

he extended, relocated Marks & Spencer (M&S) store at Sevenoaks opened its doors to customers last month revealing the brand new Womenswear, Menswear and Kidswear departments, as well as an enhanced Food Hall, Bakery and M&S Café. Store manager, Jon Reddie, said: “It is great to finally invite customers into the relocated and extended store and show them what we have been working on for the past few months. The redesigned store brings the best that M&S has to offer to shoppers in Sevenoaks. The feedback from our customers on all of the new features has been very positive so far, with the Food Hall and Womenswear department being key talking points. My colleagues and I have been delighted with the community's response to the new M&S Sevenoaks, which has excelled beyond all of our expectations. We look forward to engaging with the community in the run up to Christmas and I hope that over the coming months our store continues to be a central and vital part of Sevenoaks' successful town centre." Sylvia Williams from Sevenoaks, one of the many customers visiting the new store, said: "I have been looking forward to the store coming to Sevenoaks and, from what I have seen so far, it’s brilliant! I also think that the outside of the store looks great and is in keeping with the local area." Janet Cory from Guildford said: "I have always loved Marks & Spencer

and I have travelled down especially to see the new Sevenoaks store. I am so impressed by the store features such as the high ceilings and lighting. You can really tell that every detail has been considered." Joan Ingram from Kemsing said: "We have all been wondering for months what the new store will look like and it's so exciting to be able to finally come in. No store offers as much variety as M&S does and I really believe that the store will bring a fresh vibrancy to Sevenoaks."

Lamberhurst Few villages in Kent have more to offer than Lamberhurst, with its beautiful Wealden countryside and views and the captivating Scotney Castle, with its spectacular gardens. WORDS: MAUREEN COLE

T

he pretty village of Lamberhurst is situated in the Weald and lies in the valley of the River Teise, about forty miles from London and six miles from Tunbridge Wells. The civil parish of Lamberhurst once lay in both Kent and East Sussex but in 1894 with the Local Government Act (when parish boundaries were aligned with counties) the village fell totally within Kent.

cloth industry was set up. However, when a drop in the price of wool occurred some years later, interests switched to cattle rearing. The population at this time was still small, with no more than 100 people. The river crossing at Lamberhurst has played an important role in its development as it provided a good place to cross the River Teise.

In the 16th-18th century Lamberhurst was an important centre The first mention of the village dates back for the iron industry. It was first reported to Saxon times when the original church in the village in 1522 and dominated the Lamberhurst is in an was built (998) and its name first appears on area for almost 300 years. One of the most records around 1100 as Lamburherste, with enviable position with important Wealden ironworks, known as the meaning, “wooded hill where lambs are Gloucester Forge, is situated in the village many beautiful and found”. Lamberhurst can trace its past back and was the main contractor for supplying to when clearings in the forest were used for historic places to visit in railings for St Paul’s Cathedral. In the 9th century the area began Hall. However, as the industry diminished to attract trade and settlement and a small the village became increasingly poor and in 1684 the Wealden village church was built on a hill (on the site where the chancel of House (now known as the Chantry) was left to the parish to be today’s church stands) and a settlement grew up on both sides of used as a parish workhouse. It opened in 1740 and remained in the river. Sheep were raised for wool, which was then sold and this became the first industry within the area and round 1275, the first the village until 1837.

Hop growing and arable farming dominated the scene in the early 19th century and many oast houses were constructed, many of which have now been converted into houses. Lamburhurst Vineyard began wine making in 1977, using locally grown grapes. Beer breweries, leather workshops, woodworking shops, tailors and clock and watchmakers, have also played a significant role in Lamberhurst’s history. There is evidence of a church in Lamberhurst as far back as Saxon times, when it was probably little more than a wooden structure. The earliest parts of St Mary’s Church date back to the 11th century and as with many village churches it has undergone many alterations and extensions over the years. Lamberhurst is in an enviable position with many beautiful and historic places to visit in the locality. Scotney Castle, which lies to the south east of Lamberhurst, is certainly worth a visit. Attributed to have been built by Roger Ashburnham c1378-80, to guard against the threat of invasion from the French. The house sits in the valley of the River Bewl, on an island on a small lake. The estate was bought by Edward Hussey in 1778 and it was his grandson who built the “new” castle at the top of the hill between 1835 and 1843. The gardens are truly stunning and are known for their beauty throughout the year. In the spring they are ablaze with rhododendrons, azaleas and kalmia, in summer there are

wisterias and roses and in the autumn there is a spectacular display of autumn colours. The architectural historian and writer Christopher Hussey and his wife Betty lived in the house and in 1970, on his death bed, Hussey bequeathed the gardens to the National Trust. Betty continued to live in the house until her death in 2006. The house, which can be visited throughout the year, has changed little since it was built and many of the rooms are open to visitors and contain furniture, ornaments and artefacts which belonged Christopher and Betty Hussey. Between 1973 and 1975 a tributary of the River Teise was damned and flooded to create the Bewl Water, which is the largest body of water in south east England. The reservoir, which lies about two miles south of the village, was constructed to increase supplies of water in the area. As well as fulfilling this function, the Water is host to a variety of wild life and has brought an enormous amount of activity to the area. Walking, horse-riding and cycling, all take place around the Water and specialist clubs and activities are catered for, including canoeing, sailing, rowing and fishing. The Water is one of the country’s top trout fishing venues. Lamberhurst even has its own vineyard (what more could one ask for?). Situated at Lamberhurst Down it is one of the oldest

vineyards in Kent, with 20 acres of vineyard, which the visitor is free to wander around. The Vineyard shop is well stocked with wines and local cheeses and the staff are on hand to tell you all about wine making and offer free wine tasting sessions. The Vineyard Pub and Restaurant, beside the Vineyards, has been extensively refurbished and displays an informative mural, which tells the story of wine making. The pub serves traditional English cuisine and regional French brasserie style fare, along with a fine selection of wines from around the world. This 17th century inn offers fine food and drink and is in a great position for exploring the area. Lamberhurst Golf Course is a short walk from the Vineyard Pub and has spectacular views over the local Kent and Sussex countryside. The18 hole golf course is situated on both sides of the River Teise in beautiful parkland. The quaint Chequers Inn is a riverside pub on the Broadway, which can trace its origins back to 1137, when it was a manor house. It became a pub in 1414 and was in the Beech family for a hundred years. In the days when it was used as a coaching post house, there was stabling for 58 horses - the final coach and horse passed through in 1913. Specialising in traditional European cooking, the Chequers has five en-suite rooms for those wishing to stay for a while and enjoy the village and its surrounds. With spectacular countryside and views and the outstanding Scotney Castle and gardens, Lamberhurst could easily become one of Kent’s most popular places to visit and stay. The wealth which existed in the time of the iron industry may have disappeared but the village’s wealth continues in its natural beauty and resources.

John Ruler reminisces on a teenage haunt

STROLL DOWN MEMORY LANE: TWELVE

SHOREHAM Bridge between past and present in a perfect downland setting

As familiar today as it was in this late 19th century shot.

I

have always had a soft spot for Shoreham. In the ‘fifties it provided a daring youth club day out – a chance to sink a few beers and chat up the girls after a five-mile hike. Oh yes, and an exciting trip by steam train from Bromley South to top it all off. It was also pretty isolated, an attraction which has been whittled away as summer weekend visitors now clog what stubbornly remains a setting of Miss Marples’ proportions, complete with teashop, village store-cum-post office and pubs. There’s even the obligatory hunched-back bridge over the River Darent.

Even so some aspects would be unfamiliar to anyone living before Sir Walter Stirling who, as the new squire at the turn of the 19th century, not only demolished one row of cottages between The George and his New Place – blaming the ‘many dangerous turnings, so narrow that carriages could not pass between the house and gardens – but planned to take down even more. He also proposed a sixty-foot wide’ new ‘cut’ from the Otford-Eynsford road to the village bridge. Fortunately the Shoreham Turnpike Act was repealed in 1811 on the grounds it would provide ‘ no utility’ to the village.’

But while you can’t beat progress, you can preserve the past, which is what Shoreham & District Historical Society do with aplomb. (see box)

With the coming of the railway in 1862 , ‘ London is only 20 miles away … ‘a distance now disposed of by a few puffs of steam’, it was all change for a village which saw the population rise from 828 in 1801 to 2023 by 1991.

The accompanying sketches and old prints show just how this delightful River Darent Village – dismissed in 1830 as ‘having no high road of any public description is but little frequented by travellers…’ – continues to provide an all round seasonal slice of rural Kent, with the autumn tints sheer delight a week or so ago.

As early as 1899 George Spender of The George inn was already providing ‘good accommodation’ for cyclists, Fifty years on the number rose to ‘ hundreds… in shorts and black alpaca coats, with their haversacks and their bright club stockings.’ Shoreham would never quite be the same again…

Another circa 19th century scene looking north from Shoreham Cross up Shoreham Street: the 1870 buildings on the right, which include the Royal Oak closed in 2000, were built on the land and site of the old parish workhouse sold in 1847. The small building just beyond the old pub is now the Honeypot Tea Rooms. 3. Now two units and with the name Oxbourne having migrated to Mill Lane, Oxbourne Farm was owned by a member of the 18th century Waring family from nearby Chelsfield: for much of the last century, it was the High Street Central Mart, owned by the Bell brothers. 4. Now packed with householders’ cars, Crown Road, the first new road in centuries, was built to accommodate skilled paper–makers for the thriving Shoreham mill in 1860s and 70s. 5. Now in private ownership, part of the interior of Record, once Lovelands Grocery, Drapery and General Stores in Station Road, dates back to the 16th century: the name derives from an early 17th century owner named Rickord or Record.

4.

Though still called Shoreham Castle in the Darenth Valley Main Sewerage Award in 1881, this once small 13th century castle was, by Henry VIII’s reign, in ruins and in 1847 hardly anything visible with Castle Farm being created from the ruins.

5.

‘A sad decaying house’ by 1955, Shoreham Place, the Tudor revival style home to the Mildmay family from around 1830 to 1950, was demolished soon after. The present Shoreham Place estate now includes New England style houses built in the early 1960s.

SOAK UP THE PAST WITH A PINT

Above: Dating from the 15th century, the George Inn was one of the three local pubs licensed to sell wines and spirits as well as beer, according to the 1911 census. The picture, taken around 1900, shows the sharp right angle turn for the road to reach the familiar bridge.

Above: Another pub similarly licensed is the King’s Arms, the exterior of which seems to date to what, from the 17th to 18th century, was until Victorian times called the King’s Head,

Left: The Crown, also licensed to sell all three, is, like The George, medieval in date though possible the older. The earliest part to be seen today dates from the 15th century.

T

hese delightful sketches are just two by the late Ken Wilson: others appear as tasters in A Stroll Around Shoreham produced by Shoreham and District Historical Society who point out that there are 70-plus listed buildings in the parish.

A familiar sight to passing motorists, Filston Farm was one of four large farms which thrived from the 13th century onwards.

The ford and that bridge again. Built in the 19th century on 18th century foundations.

We are indebted to the help given by Sheila Wilson, president of the lively Shoreham & District Historical Society which she helped form in 1997 to promote awareness of the village’s long and varied history. See www.shorehamkenthistorical.org.uk. They have 27 publications, which includes the highly recommended Shoreham Past and Present, by Joy Saynor and Garry Weaser available at £5.99, from which a number of old prints have been selected. Also included are sketches by the late Ken Wilson whose role as an architect did so much to successfully shape the Churchill Theatre and Central Library complex in Bromley. Other sketches feature in the society’s A Stroll Around Shoreham booklet. The society have 130 members with a subscription of £6 a year, which includes a quarterly newsletter, Revista. Meetings are held on Friday evenings at 8pm in the Village Hall.

She is the founding director of Alpha Waves International PDS, based in Westerham, Kent, which she created in 1985. Passion, positivity, wellbeing and body language are recurring themes in Antonia’s life. As a dancer in her homeland Holland, the understanding and maturity she gained from her dance training proved to be a valuable foundation for life itself. Hard work, patience, planning, insight, team-work, respect, deadlines, health, money, marketing and an open mind, were all learned during her time treading the boards. It’s set her in good stead for an interesting life with more than a hint of bohemian spirit. Antonia first moved to the UK in 1962 and has lived in Westerham for the past 20 years. She is a well-known and highly respected resident of this ancient Kentish town and has a genuine affinity for this ‘westerly homestead’. Supportive of all things local, she is involved in many charitable events in her own right as well as supporting her husband and Westerham Parish Councillor, Eddie Boyle. She also enjoys helping to run and manage the wine bar at the Fleapit Cinema! Her early years as a dancer fuelled her taste for movement and led her to study with The British Wheel of Yoga. he Government’s Stoptober campaign was aimed at stimulating the nation’s efforts to stop smoking and included a comedic approach. Giving up is no laughing matter but Alpha Waves has a way to keep people smiling and put smoking in the past, where it belongs. Alpha Waves Stop Smoking Now! - Breathe Again … offers a unique fix of wisdom and practical help. This inspirational programme is created by Kent based, Antonia Boyle of Alpha Waves. It fuses Eriksonian Hypnotherapy with NLP and is available online in an easy listening format (CD or download). Lie back, take a deep breath – but don’t inhale! Smokers often find that quitting is far from easy and remaining a non-smoker can be even more difficult. This is not necessarily because they have a physical nicotine addiction, but because smoking has become an engrained habit and a crutch to rely on. Many people find their first ‘drag’ disgusting, yet amazingly, they still persevere to become a smoker. Participants will quite simply ‘forget to smoke’, in the same way that people can forget someone’s name or their car keys they will quit by merely forgetting to light up! The programme also keeps people relaxed while they stop, which is an important aid to success. The audio programme is 30 minutes long and should be used at least twice a day for a week. This small investment of time has big implications for the future health, wealth and happiness of those that want to quit the habit for good. Antonia Boyle explains “Stop Smoking Now! - Breathe Again ... is the result of many years experience in the field of health & wellbeing and incorporates a combination of Ericksonian hypnosis with NLP. I’ve been successfully helping smokers to quit through one-to-one consultation for many years and wanted to share this knowledge in a quick and easy format that is really suited to self-help.” Stop Smoking Now! - Breathe Again… retails at £8.00 for a download and £10.00 for a CD and is available from www. alphawavesnlp.co.uk. Sydenham High girls take a stand to make a difference

S

ydenham High School GDST is rightly proud of its excellent academic success but the school is equally proud of the way in which its students constantly make a difference to others in the wider community, with a strong tradition in inventive charity fundraising. When Year 8 decided they wanted to make a difference for Cancer Research UK, they took the title of charity’s latest campaign – Stand Up To Cancer - quite literally. Grace Rowney and Ester Schomberg (aged 12) came up with the idea of getting

the entire year to hold a sponsored stand for at least four hours on Friday 17 October – the culmination of the campaign and date of its live TV fundraiser on Channel 4. The girls carefully worked out how to spread their standing time across the school day and then got the support of their teachers. Grace and Ester gave a class assembly to explain the campaign and inspire everyone to get as much sponsorship as possible. They also used the campaign’s catchphrase poster game and, on the day, rattled collecting tins to raise yet more money. The original fund raising target was £500 but with everyone’s efforts the girls are well on the way to making almost twice that amount to go towards the charity’s vital research work. Asked what had triggered their support, Grace said: “I did it because we all want to beat cancer sooner.” Ester added: ”On the day it was great fun and all of our year got behind it and supported it.

Sixth Form Revolution

T

here is a quiet revolution happening in Chislehurst, radiating from Babington House School, which provides an education from 3-18 years in Grange Drive, just next to Elmstead Woods railway station. The new Sixth Form there is very much at the head of the educational curve. The Sixth Formers start at 10am and have a very full day of intensive A Level tuition in small sets; often with no more than four in a group. They rarely leave before 5 pm. All their ‘free periods’ are put together onto one day - Wednesday- when the students go off to work; mainly in the City, on properly organised internships, something the school arranges and monitors. This gives the pupils the edge on the fiercely competitive university application process and later on in the world of work. As Tate, who is in Year 12 and studying Law, Politics, Business Studies and Critical Thinking said; “while my friends in other schools are frittering their free periods

away in Nandos, I’m travelling into the City, working in a multi-national company, building up proper work experience and making real contacts; it’s not an easy option by any means, but it’s really exciting”. This is echoed by Natasha, studying Maths, Further Maths, Politics and Business Studies who said; “It is challenging, especially at first, but the school give you lots of support and Mrs Dormer, our career’s adviser, even travels into work with you for a few days until you feel confident to go on your own. I’m so pleased I chose to move schools to go to Babington’s Sixth Form.” The rest of the week is busy studying very hard for the A Levels; as Rachel in Year 12 commented; “the teachers get to know you really well and work you really hard; when you are in a group of four, there is no escape! You just have to do the work. The teachers have a rule that they hand back your written assignments by the next lesson, which is great because you get immediate feedback on how to improve. I’m very

ambitious and focused on the next step after school; Babington totally gets this and helps me to find a way to make it a reality.” Jess mirrors this view by saying; “Don’t come to Babington unless you are committed to doing well and ambitious to succeed after school, at Uni or in the world of work. I won’t lie; it is hard and there is no let up, but it is great to be with others who share this drive”. Full written reports from each subject every three weeks help to give the students and their parents useful feedback and it is never ‘sugar coated’ as the Headmaster, Tim Lello commented; “we use A Level examination mark schemes to assess the students’ work, so clear, accurate and meaningful feedback is very much at the heart of the A Level teaching; we are hungry for them to succeed; the world outside school is unforgiving when it comes to weak exam results.” Mr Lello draws on his experience as the Senior Tutor at Queen’s College London, to give the Babington Sixth Form students the best possible chance when it comes to university applications and he is also a specialist on applications to American Universities. He has appointed several A Level specialists, including the Head of Maths and Director of Studies from Bromley High School, the Head of ICT and Technology from Wimbledon High School and the Head of Law at Old Palace Whitgift. As Tim Lello said “I’ll not compromise on getting quality teachers; our pupils deserve the best and they will get it. I’ll also not tolerate anything mediocre; from the students, the staff and the school in general. We are an outstanding school and will remain so.” Although they have a full programme of study and work experience, the Sixth Formers also have access to all the resources of a fully equipped, major academic day school, including a wide sporting programme, state of the art climbing wall, extensive playing fields, music, drama, art and languages. Sixth Formers are given whole-school responsibilities as ‘Ambassadors’ on an area of their choice, such as fund raising for local and global charities, local politics or environmental projects. They have a Sixth Form Open Evening on 2 December, so why not go to see for yourself? You can also ask for a tour from the Headmaster during a normal working day, but a word of advice; you will have to come across as really keen on academic study and work experience if you want to be considered for a place. Good luck!

I got several quotes, but Origin's director seemed to know his subject best of all. One of the prices was slightly cheaper, but the company had only been in existence for about two years, and I felt they lacked the wealth of experience being offered by Origin. And they were using unknown sub-contractors for part of the works, which concerned me a little. Origin's concept to completion promise appealed much more - and I wasn't disappointed. ey were working alongside my own team, and kept to their area, were tidy and professional, and were less disruptive than I had imagined. When a company has to dig a swimming pool sized hole in your garden you need a lot of trust!" From the beginning, when Mr Jackson first met Origin's director in charge of client contact he felt comfortable. Most of the Origin team have been involved for many of the company's thirty year existence, and consequently have gained a unique understanding of

this very specialist field. But their ideas were fresh and exciting. ey were open to new concepts, materials and ways of thinking. eir architects worked closely with Mr Jackson's in-house designers, who spoke as highly of Origin's professionalism as the client did. In Mr Jackson's words, "Everyone involved in the process was outstanding meticulous and superbly organised. Building a pool house is a real niche thing, and Origin's expertise won through at every level. I'd like to say awesome, but I'm not very keen on that word!" Asked whether the choice of Origin for this immense task had made him feel more secure he said, simply, "Absolutely." Finally, he was asked if the degree of finish was what he expected, and he said it exceeded it. Asked, in true on-line tick-box style, how likely he would be to recommend

Origin out of ten, he said "Ten." As you can see from these photographs, the client was presented with a lovely creation from a company that is committed to deliver the best possible result, in a complicated and increasingly technological building sector. A VALUABLE ADDITION TO YOUR HOME - AND HEALTHY RELAXATION FOR YOUR FAMILY. Origin is Britain’s longest established indoor pool company, covering the South East of England for over thirty years. ey have been in the forefront of this specialist design area, and have a unique understanding of the technology to go with it. ey are proud of their long-serving team of expert designers and builders, who are committed to doing a first class job, with as little disruption to your life and your property as possible, in the quickest achievable time. Origin has developed its product range from early pine chalets to the sophisticated

leisure buildings they build today. e recipe is still broadly the same - create a carefully considered, practical, solid and fantastic looking building … and add a beautifully proportioned, perfectly built heated swimming pool. Which means, with as little fuss as possible, you can be enjoying a leisure complex that will bring you daily fun, fitness and a secure feeling that your investment has added considerably to the value of your home, and your home life. It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas in Dartford!

Miracle on 34 Street th

The Classic Christmas Musical

To Play At The Orchard Theatre From 24 To 29 November

B

ased on one of the most popular and best-loved Christmas films of all time, classic musical Miracle on 34th Street will play at The Orchard Theatre from 24 to 29 November as part of a UK Tour this Christmas.

Based on the 1947 motion picture, Miracle on 34th Street is the heart-warming story of Susan, a young girl who dreams of a father and brother to make her family whole, and Kris Kringle, a kindly old bearded man who claims he is the real Santa Claus. When employed as a Santa at a department store grotto, Kris quickly spreads a wave of love through New York City, but can he help make Susan’s wish come true? This dazzling musical adaptation is an uplifting family tale of battling cynicism and learning what it truly means to believe. Miracle on 34th Street originated as a 1947 motion picture starring Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, Natalie Wood and Edmund Gwenn. The film became a perennial Christmas favourite, winning three Academy Awards and nominated for Best Picture. The stage version, originally entitled Here’s Love, opened on Broadway in 1963. A hugely popular remake of the film was also released in 1994 starring Richard Attenborough as Kris Kringle. Miracle on 34th Street has a book, music and lyrics by Meredith Willson, best known for writing and composing The Music Man which premiered on Broadway in 1957 and was adapted twice for film in 1962 and 2003. It won the 1958 Tony Award for Best Musical and the cast recording won the first ever Grammy Award for Best Original Cast Album. His work for film includes composing the score for Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score. The cast features James Murphy as Kris Kringle, Inez Mackenzie as Doris, Ceris Hine as Susan, Jay Rincon as Fred Gaily, Robert Hannouch as Shellhammer and Craig Berry as R H Macy. The cast also includes Jodie Steele, Michaela Cartmell, Emily McAvoy, Scarlett Courtney, Stephanie Willson, Faye Charlotte Ainley, Adam Roberts, Calum Ewan Cameron, David Hinton-Gale and Toby Joyce. Miracle on 34th Street will be directed by Paul Taylor Mills with choreography by Richard Jones.

Paul Taylor-Mills' directing credits include the European Premiere of Bare at the Union Theatre, A Clockwork Orange and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at the Lost Theatre, the European Premiere of My Big Gay Italian Wedding in sold-out seasons Above The Stag, in Edinburgh and at Greenwich Theatre, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Steel Pier at the Union Theatre and Rent at Greenwich Theatre (Winner of Best Regional Production at the BroadwayWorld Awards). Richard Jones' credits include Bare, Stepping Out, Rent and Stiles and Drewe’s Three Little Pigs (European Premiere), all at Greenwich Theatre, Steel Pier at the Union Theatre and Floyd Collins at Southwark Playhouse. As a performer Richard is currently appearing in The Pajama Game at the Shaftesbury Theatre, with other West End credits including Kiss Me Kate, Crazy For You and Sweet Charity. Musical direction by Ben Holder and design by David Shields. It is produced by Paul Taylor-Mills Ltd. Pre-show dining is also available before the show. The Orchard Theatre’s Restaurant provides a range of delicious, unique and memorable dishes, using the freshest local produce and prepared daily by the Head Chef. Set in the natural amphitheatre of picturesque Calverley Grounds, the Royal Tunbridge Wells ice rink offers spectacular views of the park. “We tend to close the windows and turn on the heating, creating stuffy environments that bugs will thrive in,” says Wakeman. “Having the heating on dries out our mucosa [the cells that line the back of our throat, windpipe and sinuses] making it easier for bugs to infect us. Viruses like the common cold and flu invade the mucosa and start growing, causing us to feel unwell. We also tend to have a more indoor lifestyle when the weather’s colder, so infections spread much more easily as we’re in closer proximity to each other.” Other aspects of winter - like boozy Christmas parties and rushing all over the place trying to get everything done - can also suppress the immune system, leading to us feeling more run down and prone to infections. But there’s plenty you can do to support your immune health, and hopefully enjoy a less bug-burdened winter.

WINTER FUEL “It’s well established that better nourished people get less sick, so ensuring your diet’s packed full of highly nutritious foods is a good start, especially as it becomes more tempting to spend cosy nights in with the wrong types of comfort foods as winter closes in,” says Rob Hobson, head of nutrition at Healthspan.

Winter-Proof your Immune System I

t seems like five minutes since we packed the summer beach towels away, now suddenly everywhere people are sniffling, spluttering or complaining of feeling groggy and achy.

Colds, and the more severe flu, are a common part of winter and most of us fall prey at some point or other, but taking action now could help keep these bugs at bay. And at the centre of this strategy is the immune system. “The immune system’s made of specialised cells and tissues that protect the body from invaders like bacteria and viruses, parasites and fungal infections,” explains Mel Wakeman, senior lecturer in applied physiology at Birmingham City University. “It’s able to detect the presence of foreign bodies and mount an attack in an effort to destroy them and limit any damage they could cause. And it’s heavily involved in healing and repair processes.” These bacteria and viruses exist all year round, and - despite the common myth - getting cold and wet doesn’t make us more likely to catch them, but these bugs do affect us more during colder months.

44 NOVEMBER 2014

But don’t wait until you start sniffling to think about reaching for the healthy grub, make it a long-term strategy. “It’s not so much about ‘boosting the immune system’, but more like keeping it working effectively,” he adds. Christine Bailey, director of Advance Nutrition Ltd (www. advancenutrition.co.uk), agrees that you need to start now to “keep your immune health functioning well throughout winter”. We all know the importance of eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, but remember that balance is key and including wholegrain foods (like brown rice and wholegrain pasta) and oily fish (a top source of essential fatty acids like omega 3, which is also vital for good immune health) will help ensure you get a good range of nutrients. Ensure your iron levels aren’t lacking either - red meats are known as an important source of iron, but dark, leafy greens, beans and tofu are also high in iron, especially important if you’re veggie or don’t like red meat. “Winter’s a great time to start cooking hearty stews, soups and casseroles using in-season root vegetables and pulses which provide a good source of immune-friendly nutrients,” adds Hobson.

Vitamin vitals “We should all consider taking vitamin D supplements as the clocks go back. Nearly half of us have low levels of this sunshine vitamin in winter, and research shows that people with low vitamin D tend to get more respiratory tract infections,” says Hobson. Bailey agrees vitamin D is vital, pointing out a 2011 review highlighting its role in reducing the risk of bacterial and viral infections “through the production of the Continued on page 46

Winter Proof your Immune System Continued from page 44 compound cathelicidin [a naturallyoccurring anti-microbial and anti-viral]”. Vitamin C, she adds, is the vitamin most commonly used to support immune health. “Several studies show that vitamin C enhances the immune system and helps defend against infections,” says Bailey. “It’s known to increase the production and action of white blood cells, including the ability of neutrophils [a type of white blood cell] to attack and engulf viruses. Not only does it seem to prevent flu, it can reduce its duration and severity.” While some vitamins and minerals play more leading roles in immune function, getting a broad range is key to optimum health. “In the run-up to winter, try a broad spectrum multivitamin and mineral supplement,” suggests Hobson, “which will provide a good back-up to make sure you’re getting everything you need. Try choosing one to suit your age.” Another tip, from Bailey, is to take a rainbow approach to eating, so make your meals a colourful affair. “Phytonutrients found in colourful vegetables are key to the immune system, so eat colourful plates of veg daily,” she advises. Vitamin A and beta carotene-rich foods, like vibrant carrots, sweet potatoes and butternut squash, not only contrast beautifully with deep-green veggies like broccoli and stark white garlic, but combinations like this will please your immune system too. Go colourful with desserts and brekkies too; how about drizzling some bright orange - and antibacterial and antiinflammatory-packed - honey on those oats, or over that bowl of berries?

From A to Zinc Another big mover and shaker in the immune supporting minerals is zinc. “Zinc is known to support the healing of tissues, particularly the reddened and inflamed tissues often associated with a sore throat,” says Bailey. “Taking zinc supplements has been shown to help

46 NOVEMBER 2014

prevent the onset and reduce the duration of cold symptoms. It appears to improve the immune response in fighting viral infections by preventing viruses from replicating and attaching to cells.” Good dietary sources include many types of seafood, nuts and seeds particularly pumpkin seeds and cashews - lean cooked meat and dark, leafy greens like spinach.

Gut to it In recent years, ‘good bacteria’ and ‘probiotics’ are phrases most of us have become familiar with. But while boosting gut health has certainly been a trend in the food and supplements world, the role the gut plays in the immune system is nothing new. “Maintaining a healthy gut’s key to all aspects of nutrition and wellbeing, and our good bacteria appear to play a role in maintaining a strong immune system,” says Hobson, who points out that these bacteria can be easily destroyed if you’re taking antibiotics. Good food sources include natural yogurt with live cultures and certain other dairy products, sauerkraut and miso soup. Investing in a high-quality probiotic supplement can help maintain healthy gut bacteria balance too. “Look for a supplement with more than 20 billion bacteria per capsule and strains such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium,” Hobson suggests. “And take them with breakfast, and not with a hot drink, so the bacteria have the best chance of surviving the journey to the gut.”

MOVE IT, MOVE IT Working up the motivation to exercise during winter, when it’s cold, wet and dark, is a challenge, but your immune system will thank you for it. As well as being vital for long-term health, research suggests regular physical activity’s important for short-term immune function too. Some experts believe it helps flush bugs from the lungs, and getting your blood pumping means those allimportant white blood cells are circulating more effectively. You know how exercise increases

endorphins, those natural mood-boosters? This also means that stress hormones are slowed down, and chronic stress is associated with a suppressed immune system (ever noticed that you’re more run down when you’re constantly frazzled?). So not only could exercise help you stay well through winter, but as a bonus, it’ll help offset the dreaded seasonal affective disorder and winter blues too. It doesn’t have to mean slugging it out at the gym or going running, even a daily 15-minute walk makes a big difference. Or find a work-out tutorial on YouTube - you could do that while the dinner cooks. But getting outdoors while it’s light if you can is a good idea, to get some air into your lungs and top up on vitamin D.

Cold caution Being active is good, but don’t overdo it; too much exercise can also suppress immune function. And resting when you are unwell is also very important, so listen to your body and don’t feel guilty about skipping work-outs if you’re ill; too much strain on the system could slow down the recovery process.

CLEAN TOUCH ‘Coughs and sneezes spread diseases’, as the old saying goes. Many of these germs can linger, on our hands and everything we touch. “Keeping your hands clean is the best way to keep from getting sick and spreading germs,” says Deepa Songara, Boots UK flu pharmacist. “Routinely cleaning your hands with warm water and soap will get rid of germs you may pick up from other people or hard surfaces, and if these aren’t available, alcohol-based wipes or hand gels and foams can be used.” As well as hands, Songara suggests regularly disinfecting hard surfaces. “Even though surfaces may look clean, many infectious germs may still be present. In some cases, germs can live on surfaces for hours and even days. Alcohol-based disinfectants can help destroy these germs.”

veryone knows that getting eight hours of shut-eye a night will ensure you look your best, but did you also know you can harness the power of sleep to boost your natural beauty?

“At night, the skin is in repair mode, just like the rest of the body, and is more receptive to concentrated, targeted treatment during hours of rest,” says Dr Tom Mammone, executive director of skin physiology and pharmacology at Clinique. “After dark, your skin cell renewal is much more active, eight times more active than at 1pm,” agrees Emma Schulz, national education manager for Darphin. “The biggest mistake people make is not putting anything on the skin before bed, so it uses up all the natural oils.” And it’s not just your skin that can benefit. Supercharge your beauty sleep with these powerful products...

PEEL AWAY THE YEARS Want to wake up looking rested and rejuvenated - even when you’re feeling anything but? Superdrug’s Naturally Radiant Glycolic Overnight Peel, £5.99 (www.superdrug.com), uses glycolic acid and antioxidants to exfoliate and fade pigmentation problems while you sleep. Apply after removing your make-up (being careful to avoid the eye area) and simply wash off the next morning.

SUPER SERUM If you haven’t already added an antiageing serum to your evening routine, what are you waiting for? Kiehl’s Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturising Serum Concentrate, £40 (www.kiehls.co.uk), contains glycerine, which Continued on page 50

ediskyn is a new private medical and dermatology company set up by a group of doctors who felt patients were increasingly at risk from poorly trained individuals offering risky procedures in the high street. The Mediskyn group of doctors include those specialising in dermatology, plastic surgery, general practice and one doctor who previously was the cosmetic doctor for Harrods in Knightsbridge. Offering everything from skin tag removal, threadvein ablation, removal of vascular lesions, moles and rosacea on the face to wrinkle relaxing injections, acne treatments and antiageing facials – it is a one stop shop for the face and skin. All treatments have been tried and tested and the ethos of the group is that patient safety is paramount.

Dermabuilder is a line eraser, the photo above shows before, and the photo below shows after treatment

One of their newest treatments is the ThermaVein wave machine for removing threadveins and red spots and marks on the face and body. It is less painful than laser and lesions disappear quickly. There is no downtime and hence is a popular lunchtime treatment. However, the treatment that people are booking months ahead for is the hydrafacial. This is not like any other facial that you may have experienced, as its a clinically proven treatment that is designed to work in the skin, rather than just on the skin to produce instantly visible results that last. Experience the unique Vortex-Fusion® of HydraFacial that celebrities enjoy to visibly improve the health and appearance of their skin. A –listers use this facial particularly before red carpet events but also as a monthly skin health ritual. Each HydraFacial experience uses a series of HydroPeel® tips with a unique spiral design which creates a vortex effect to easily dislodge and remove impurities and blackheads while simultaneously introducing hydrating skin solutions with potent active ingredients.

treatment with the HydraFacial® uses a combination of painless but effective steps to exfoliate, stimulate, cleanse and hydrate the skin with medically proven techniques that leave your skin looking instantly better and clinically improve the signs of ageing. To specifically treat fine lines and wrinkles, a course of Dermabuilder treatments is added to the HydraFacial procedure. Dermabuilder contains a uniquely formulated combination of peptides designed to visibly reduce the appearance of wrinkles and to help stimulate collagen production and improve cell structural strength. Suitable for any age or skin type, regular HydraFacial treatments can help to improve the quality of your skin, making it healthy on the inside and looking visibly plumper, smoother and less lined on the outside. Mediskyn : 01883 723975 prices start from £120 for a hydrafacial. Express hydrafacials cost £85.

HydraFacial Skin Solutions and treatment tips are clinically formulated to target specific skin conditions providing instantly visible results whilst gradually improving the health and quality of your skin. A

little over a year ago, a luxurious new addition to Westerham arrived in town. Gushlow & Cole’s boutique has enticed a growing number of shoppers to buy shearling outerwear and accessories created by the local design duo. Here, co-owner and creative director, Katrina Cole, talks through the label’s origins and explains why the brand AUTUMN WINTER 14 are on a recruitment drive to promote British craftsmanship & manufacturing.

When was the Gushlow & Cole brand established and why did you decide to launch your own label? After attending London College of Fashion, Emma and I gained a wealth of experience at my father’s shearling manufacturing business working on beautiful products for Amanda Wakeley, Nicole Farhi & Margaret Howell. After a few years we decided to branch out and created our first collection in 2003.

What is the Gushlow & Cole brand about? Making luxury contemporary womenswear in shearling, understated yet glamorous, always retaining an emphasis on perfect fit and high quality construction.

Where are your collections made? Every element of our design and production process takes place in England. We are passionate about celebrating the skilled artisans who are involved in this. In fact every Gushlow & Cole piece has a special ‘Made by’ name label identifying its maker.

Is it easy to find people with the right skills? Working with leather and shearling is highly specialised and we’re finding that these skills are not necessarily being taught. The industry is crying out for skilled craftsmen and we are actually looking into training & apprenticeships ourselves, in order to create the artisans of the future. Whilst always on the lookout for experienced cutters and machinists, we are also keen to meet people of all ages who have a passion for craft and want to learn a tangible skill. Please get in touch! Our own hands-on experience has been invaluable and we want to pass this expertise on.

Is the Gushlow & Cole brand successful abroad? Yes! We now have over 100 stockists on five continents. Each season our collections are showcased in London, Paris and Tokyo. We are particularly successful in Japan, where the buyers have a great appreciation for British labels & British-made products.

Is it important to you to be a ‘local’ label? Yes, we both grew up in Kent and it makes sense to have a ‘local’ boutique in an area we really like.

Any new additions in store this season? Our fabulous reversible coats have been incredibly well received this winter, and we’ve introduced a cashmere scarf using fabric from Johnstons of Elgin. We’re also really excited to have some beautiful 100% cashmere knitwear in store from a brand called Sphere One, as well as stretch leather trousers, all of which complement our own collection beautifully.

What can a customer expect when visiting the Gushlow & Cole boutique? We’ve created a relaxed environment and while you’re welcome to browse, our staff are extremely knowledgeable and happy to spend time selecting pieces for you. The boutique enables us to stock one-off pieces as well as our main collection. We have a very dedicated following so whether you are local or visiting from afar we aim to make your shopping experience with us worthwhile. The boutique is open on Fridays & Saturdays from 10am - 5pm, or by appointment. 29-31 High Street, Westerham, TN16 1LE gushlowandcole.com

FOLLOWING SUIT

C

ast your mind back to a time, not that long ago, when the only reason you’d pull that tired old trouser suit (black, of course) from the depths of your wardrobe was for a job interview - or a funeral. Well, that’s all about to change. Because for autumn/winter 2014, the two-piece tailored number is back, and it’s anything but boring. On the catwalks, Stella McCartney - who’s always been a tailoring trendsetter - sent out slouchy double-breasted jacket and trouser combos in petrol blue, while at Dior and Gucci, suits were sharp and came in deep turquoise and mustard. And now the high street has, well, followed suit. From mannish daywear to sleek evening looks, here’s how to embrace the return of the trouser suit...

BORROWED FROM THE BOYS There’s only one rule when it comes to the new season suits: no starchy white shirts allowed. Whatever your choice of tailoring, stick to soft layers underneath. For day, this look is relaxed, but pairing your menswear-inspired tailoring with a fine jersey top or Peter Pan-collar blouse will mean it’s still office-appropriate. Follow Ms McCartney’s lead with a loose-cut but sharp-shouldered jacket. Worried that a doublebreasted blazer is a bit bulky? Then go for one with a narrow overlap, or opt for single-breasted and wear with a V-neck draped blouse. Look for suits with slim-cut trousers and add heels to balance out the slouchy top half of the silhouette.

Dorothy Perkins blazer, 38GBP; polo neck top, 16GBP; peg leg trousers, 20GBP; and ankle strap court shoes, 23GBP (www. dorothyperkins. com)

Alternatively, suit up with a sharp-cut tuxedostyle jacket and trousers. Add this season’s patent or metallic brogues for extra androgynous appeal. ◆ Red Herring Notch Neck Jacket, £40, and Black Trousers, £22, Debenhams (www.debenhams. com) ◆ Geri Jacket, £60 (reduced from £120); Chiara Silk Blouse, £34.50 (reduced from £69), and Grace Crepe Tapered Leg Trousers, £49 (reduced from £69), Phase Eight (www.phase-eight.com) ◆

PRINTS THAT POP Hot on the heels of summer’s co-ordinates trend, suits in punchy prints are the coolest way to do matchymatchy this season. Take your cue from the catwalk with deep blues and jewel tones, pairing with a plain navy or neutral top and accessories. Loud prints can be a bit daunting on fuller figures, so look for subtle geometric motifs in darker hues and steer clear of ‘boyfriend’ blazers - go for a curve-skimming cropped jacket or one that emphasises the narrowest part of your waist. If you’re dashing about, a pair of Sixties-style pointedtoe flats are perfect with a power print, while ankle-strap sandals are just the ticket come cocktail hour. ◆ Louha Geo Suit Jacket, £249 and Louhat Scale Suit Trousers, £149, Ted Baker (www.tedbaker.com) ◆ Sophia Jacket, £90 (reduced from £200), and Dasha Trousers, £70 (reduced from £140), Fenn Wright Manson (www.fennwrightmanson.com)

SOIREE SUITS Give your LBD a rest this winter and make a chic trouser suit the star of your party season wardrobe. Go down the vintage route with a fitted Seventiesinspired two-piece. Flares aren’t compulsory though; you can amp up the retro vibe with platform heels and decadent disco-era accessories. For a seriously sexy after-dark look, wear a sheer blouse under your suit jacket - or nothing at all (if you dare). Styling tip: add a long draped necklace or skinny silk scarf so you won’t feel quite so exposed. A pastel-toned trouser suit offers a fresh take on winter wedding dressing. Choose tonal jewellery (violet jewels with a mauve suit, for example, or ruby hues with pale pink) and shoes to pull the look together, and drape a faux-fur jacket over your shoulders for a glamorous finishing touch. ◆ Brixton Jacket, £129, and Brixton Trousers, £89, Ossie Clark (www.ossieclarklondon.co.uk) ◆ Limited Collection Jacket, £59, and Trousers, £35, Marks and Spencer (in stores only) ◆ Heine Trouser Suit, £89, Kaleidoscope (www. kaleidoscope.co.uk)

W INTER’S A TIME TO HUNKER DOWN, SNUGGLE INDOORS AND ENJOY A HOME WHOSE DECOR MATCHES THE SEASON. This year, there’s an abundance of chic looks, taking inspiration from the latest interiors trends, which can transform rooms - but divine decor tends to come at a price. Luckily there’s no need to despair if, with the expense of Christmas looming, money’s tight, and you fear you can’t afford your dream of creating rooms perfect for indulgent hibernating. Pick one of our three on-trend schemes and either splash out on a full-on luxe interpretation, or get the look for much, much less with some carefully-chosen budget buys.

SIMPLY SNUG What could be more appealing than a log cabin retreat, with wood panelled walls and stripped floors, where you toast your toes in front of a traditional stove? The pure paredback simplicity of this Scandinavian-inspired style isn’t difficult to evoke, and its colour palette of neutral tones is easy on the eye. Dress up with faux fur and velvet, or dress down with chunky woollen throws and rugs for a more homely feel.

LUXE LOOK: Wood burning stoves from companies such as Chesney’s start from around £895, and sanding, sealing and varnishing floorboards is characteristic of this rustic look. Timber-effect wallpaper is a fast way to transform a room, and Rockett St George’s Engineer Collection paper in Driftwood & Oak, £69 a roll, is superrealistic. A Peppy Armchair, from £735, and Jonesy Sofa, from £1,095, both Loaf, have appropriate softly, curved lines and generous seats, and can be upholstered in plain linen or cotton fabrics. Pile on the luxe with a Faux Ermine Throw, £275, Lux Deco, and scatter cushions portraying a wintry landscape. A Blue Lake Cushion (below), £55, Unique & Unity.

£137.91, Amazon, while Galerie Wood Panel Wallpaper, £34.95, John Lewis, artfully mimics white-washed panelling. Tesco’s furniture (main picture below) is a stylish steal, especially its Florence Sofa, from £599 and Pemberley Armchair, £399. Finishing touches make or break this look; Mink Luxury Polar Faux Fur Throw, (top right) £60, BHS, and Tesco’s accessory gems, an Ombre Shaggy Faux Fur Cushion, £12, and Frozen Tree Cushion (left),, £8, would complete it Peppy armchair, beautifully.

from 735GBP, Loaf.

STYLE SAVER: Cut costs and fake that glow: a Dimplex Tango 2KW Optiflame Electric Stove,

H O M E G A R D E N Criss Cross lantern, 120GBP, Sweetpea & Willow

NESTING INSTINCT Rich colour, including this season’s star shade; deep blue, teams brilliantly with jewel-bright reds and plums. That colour-combo will bring welcome warmth to any winter setting, and if you introduce key pieces of oak furniture, you’ll conjure a relaxed, unfussy, inviting parlour, suitable for a rural or urban setting. Soft textured velvet or faux suede sofas will contrast well with polished wood, boasting a striking natural grain. Follow the theme with dark wood floors, gaily patterned rugs and, as a focal point, a pale stone fireplace.

LUXE LOOK: Invest in glamour with a Dusty 2 Seater Sofa, in blue velvet, £749, DFS. Well-designed wood furniture never loses its appeal, and a Naseby Coffee Table, in a rustic oak finish, £429, and Chunky Wood Tall Table Lamp (left), £149, both Marks & Spencer, are solidly stylish. Lanterns are an interesting alternative to candlesticks, and Sweetpea & Willow’s Criss Cross Lantern, £120, is decorative and appropriate for any season. Ward off the chills with a Chunky Crocheted Wool Throw in Nutmeg Sage (bottom left) left),, £190, Nutmeg & Sage, and add an injection of rich colour with Velvet Cushions in gorgeous glowing shades (bottom right),, £32 each, Oliver Bonas.

upholstery, currently £349 (usual price £699), Very, would provide that shot of colour. Keep clutter to a minimum with a coffee table incorporating generous storage: Ripley Rough Sawn Solid Oak 4 Drawer Coffee Table, £249.74 (usual price £399.74), Oak Furnitureland.

Rusper Lantern complete lamp, 70GBP, Laura Ashley

Bring on more blue with a turquoise Gurli Throw, £5.50 (above, centre), Ikea, and Multi-colour Pattern Crewelwork Cushions (below centre), £20 each from selected Sainsbury’s stores. Lamplit makes any room cosy, and a Wooden Walnut Lamp (left, second from top), £20, from Asda’s George Home range, would match this decor.

WINTER PALACE A dark, moody, monochrome palette, sensual textures and razzle-dazzle metallic touches conjure an opulent, elegant sanctuary. A subtle change of colour may be all that’s needed to capture the atmosphere of this look - opt for mellow tones like fashionable greys, or muted taupes for a feature wall. Charcoal grey or black upholstery, cashmere and wool throws and cushions, plus decadent chandeliers and the soft light of candles in hurricane lanterns are the rest of the essential elements for a hotel-chic cocoon for winter.

LUXE LOOK: Designer John Rocha knows a thing or two about style, and his dark grey Elements Chaise Corner Sofa, currently £1,344 (usual price £1,920), Debenhams, is a handsome choice. Glamorous lighting always adds a ‘wow’ factor, and shimmering glass Deltra Ceiling Light (far right, second from top), £189, Littlewoods, has contemporary grandeur. Compliment with a slim, silver Flos Miss K Table Lamp (bottom left),, currently £152.95 (usual price £180), Design55. Extra seating’s useful when there’s an influx of family and friends at Christmas, and John Rocha’s dark grey Knitted Rope Pouffe (right), currently £88 (usual price £110), Debenhams, is a handsome perch. Decor divas believe brands speak louder than words, and Versace Home collection accessories, such as a black silk Vanitas Matelasse Cushion (top far right), £235, LuxDeco, couldn’t fail to impress.

John Rocha corner sofa, 1,536GBP, coffee table, 480GBP; John Rocha designer grey beaded flower felt cushion, 25GBP, Debenhams

STYLE SAVER: Luxury and comfort combine in a Shannon 3 Seater Pillow Back Corner Sofa, available in charcoal and black, and currently a bargain at £899 (half its usual price), DFS. Trip the light fantastic without busting the budget at Laura Ashley, whose Vienna Glass And Antique Brass Ceiling Light (top, centre)) looks the business but is only £126 (usual price £180). Light a dull corner with a silver Anastasia Table Lamp (top left), currently £64 (usual price £80), BHS. A Sabichi Knitted Pouffe, £75, Littlewoods, doubles as a seat or footrest, and all you need to give a sofa a cheap facelift is a black or grey throw, and then add upmarket John Rocha grey Beaded Flower Felt Cushions, £25 each (usually £32), Debenhams. Keeping Warm This Winter

he clocks have gone back, the leaves are falling from the trees, and before talk of Christmas is fully upon us it time to think about getting and keeping warm this winter. If you are thinking of installing a wood burning stove in your home you will find that the market place is awash with choice, and how do you tell what is good from what is bad? Whilst many people turn to the Internet for inspiration and help it is worth knowing that many of the more reputable stove manufacturers will not allow their products to be sold on line; and although some unscrupulous dealers will circumvent the rules you will find that warranties will be invalid if the stove was purchased from anywhere other than an authorised dealer. Wood Burning Solutions is a company which has been selling and installing stoves for over ten years. Just over a year ago they opened a branch in Kent which has breathed a breath of fresh air into the marketplace – offering information and honest advice about stoves and the very best way to install them. They sell a wide range of stoves, both traditional and contemporary, and pride themselves on their outstanding level of customer service which is central to their business ethos. If you are looking for a traditional stove talk to them about the Woodwarm range – stoves which are designed and made in Britain. These are stoves which are certainly a cut above the rest. Not only are they wonderfully efficient and easy to control but their airwash is outstanding. (That’s the ability of the glass to stay clean). Likewise the Chesney range of stoves are not only technically reliable but also classically British in their style and design and make any fireplace look distinguished. On the contemporary side you really can’t do much better than Hase stoves which are designed and hand built in Germany.

These stoves offer an amazing amount of control – from flames which can purr like a cat or roar like a lion. The choice is up to you. Alternatively, Rais from Denmark or Contura from Sweden offer stoves which are well built, highly efficient and ooze Scandinavian charm. You really can’t go wrong with either of these manufacturers. Of course, the best way to find out more, and see these stoves on display, is to pay a visit to the Wood Burning Solutions Showroom at the Hawley Garden Centre in Dartford. In the showroom you can also see some of our stoves in action and have a chat with our fully trained staff who will be able to provide you with advice and help you find the stove that is just right for you. John Bly Antiques WHAT HO FOR A CHRISTMAS WASSAIL

O

ne of the Christmas Season traditions closely linked to collectable antiques is the Wassail and its Bowl.

It is known that the greeting ‘wassail’ is derived from many early Northern European languages and, however it is spelt, it roughly translates as “Good Health”. But the Wassail is more than just a toast; it is a mixed drink containing a fair plug of alcohol, usually cider, as well as the celebration of quaffing it with a gathering of friends. This is called The Wassail in the Hall – on some occasions you all drink out of the same large bowl so its best to choose your friends carefully! There is also the Wassail performed by strolling groups going from house to house, and the even more ancient custom of visiting the orchard to toast the health of the trees and bless the fruit; the Apple Wassail. The large Wassail Bowl has for centuries been made of one timber in particular, lignum vitae. Nicknamed iron wood it is the heartwood of species of the genus Guaiacum and has a specific gravity of between 1.28 and 1.37, so it will not float in water.

Genuine antique turned wood items of any type, particularly large bowls and cups will not be truly circular, for the timber will have shrunk and twisted slightly, but it is this very unevenness that gives such pieces

their character and creates their appeal to the collector. Some of the finest examples can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum in Kensington and if you are interested in learning more there are several excellent reference books under the heading of “Treen”. The surface of a two or three hundred year old Wassail Bowl will be soft to the touch and shiny as bronze, and believe me, a sup of Wassail from one this year will make your Christmas special.

BOOK REVIEWS

The Bookshelf

“Another trio of relationship tales - curl up in front of an open fire, dream and enjoy . . .” WORDS BY BRUCE EDWARDS

The Unpredictable Consequences of Love Jill Mansell

From Notting Hill with Four Weddings . . . Actually Ali McNamara

Not What it Seems Pamela Fudge

• Headline Review • £14.99 Hardback

• Sphere • £7.99 Paperback

• £19.99 Hardback

Many may recognise this author for she’s written at least twenty five novels and after such a level of achievement two things can happen. Either you write ‘to a template’ and every new story sounds sadly familiar to a reader apart from different names and backdrop (and there are those who do but I can’t reveal names) or you become so proficient at your craft that inspiration never flags. There’s just such a case here, for the tale reads refreshingly different. Sophie is a photographer through and through and takes most things in her stride. Josh is fresh back to the area to help run a hotel he and his grandmother bought on the Cornish coast. Tula interesting name - works as receptionist at the hotel. The two girls, one guy - and a dog - get all mixed up alongside a parallel love story and mayhem ensues. We can’t forget Riley either, who is an undeclared ghost writer and proves not to be the waster every one thinks he is, which perhaps is just as well . . .

There’s a plethora of new books from established authors at this time of year, gearing up for the Christmas bonanza, for it’s peak sales time in bookshops. Presents, as you know, are notoriously difficult to always get right, so giving a friend or relative a book (which you do first read before giving it away . . .?) seems like an easy option. Ali McNamara has a niche readership but that is no disparagement. There’s a delightfully open sense of makebelieve in this and yes, if you recognise the title wordage that’s fine for it sets the scene. Lovable young Scarlett - her name another blast from the past - gets caught up in a frothy world of glitz and glamour whilst try ing to hang on to marriage plans and a worthwhile charity job, commuting across the Atlantic. If you feel you’ve been here before you may be right but it makes for a pleasant, unassuming and a giveawayable read. New York or Notting Hill? Have a guess . . .

What does Evie do when the last of her children flies the nest? When a husband deserted her years ago and the long-term platonic friendship with widower Owen helped fill the mutual gaps, the decision to move came as a surprise to her elder children. A new life could be on the horizon - though Owen is still within reach. She employs one Stuart to undertake some building work, makes good friends with elderly neighbour Arthur and his dog and the stage is set for a fascinating play on relationships and emotions. It’s coming up to Christmas and a family party is to be arranged with all the nuances of a television soap. Will elder daughter Alice see sense? Will the two - three - men in Evie’s life sort out their priorities? This is a comfortable story, without the high flying or workplace complications of our other choices but there’s no denying the continuous query in mind as to who will eventually end up in Evie’s bed. Nicely readable.

But as it turns out, coming home from a skiing trip with two less fingers is an actual possibility. That’s because here, at the top of Lookout Mountain, in the Sunshine Village ski resort of Canada’s Banff National Park, it’s -27. I’m currently 2,739m above sea level, on the borders of Alberta and British Columbia, snugly wrapped up within an inch of my life.

82 NOVEMBER 2014

The snow has stopped falling and the cloudy skies have given way to a blanket of blue. The tops of the Rocky Mountains stretch for miles ahead, and thanks to the strict building rules in this national park, there’s not a town, road or car in sight. While North American ski slopes are comparatively more spacious than European ones (just like the roads, they’re much wider), the mountains of Sunshine Village seem to be in another league entirely. There are no chairlift queues, and it’s not unusual to have an entire run to ourselves. Along with Lake Louise and Mount

Norquay, Sunshine Village is part of the park’s Big 3 ski areas, which combined, offer 8,000 acres of skiable terrain. But Sunshine Village is the only resort with ski-in ski-out means. It has the highest annual snowfall in the Banff area, and there’s something really refreshing about the intimate, small scale of the resort. There are three mountains to keep us busy here: Goat’s Eye, Standish and Lookout. The mid-mountain area is my favourite, with long, varied black and blue runs, huge North American evergreen pines and a hidden narrow passageway with lots of bumps to keep you on your toes - quite literally.

T R AV E L

On one occasion, I misguidedly attempt to follow a fellow skier offpiste. As I hurtle ahead and all ski tracks disappear, mild panic sets in as I realise this is a national park and there was a bear sighting here not long ago. Thankfully, a fellow skier bumbles along behind me and we end up having to retrace our footsteps and escape the trees in the most shameful way - carrying our skis. After a day on the slopes, there’s nothing better than slipping into a hot tub. With specks of snow falling from a black sky, and the evening temperatures dropping, we dip into the hot water. Within minutes, we’re laughing at the icicles that have formed on our frozen hair, a surreal sensation in the steaming hot bath.

Alberta is well known for its beauty in summer, with emerald lakes tucked between vast mountain ranges covered with pine trees. When snow starts to fall, the mountains around Lake Louise take on an eerie but beautiful quality. After a day on the spacious powdery slopes, we sit down to an impressive selection of local meats at the beautiful Deer Lodge restaurant. We dine on elk, caribou, bison and pink Alberta steak. The Alpine Ski World Cup is being held at Lake Louise during our stay, and athletes from all over the world come to show off their downhill skills. Hundreds of volunteers have snowploughed the course to remove any specks of loose snow that can add milliseconds to an athlete’s time. It’s surprising that there aren’t more

broken bones as they hurtle down the mountain without turning. While Lake Louise may have good slopes, there are far more options for post-ski activities in Banff town. A long stretch of restaurants, shops and bars is set against a backdrop of snow-tipped mountains, attracting a large number of tourists. Our hotel, The Fox, has a rustic feel, with large suites and an open-air Jacuzzi in the basement, where I head for a predinner beer and soak. We may be in Canada but I enjoy a range of international cuisine in the restaurant; one night I’m digging into grilled calamari and drinking Italian wine, then Greek food the following day.

T R AV E L When night falls, Banff doesn’t sleep. Wild Bill’s reputation precedes it, with talk of line dancing, live country music and a bucking bronco. But I’m heartbroken when we turn up to find the bar closed, as it’s too early in the season.

Admiring the winter wonderland of Banff National Park, I understand why it’s

easy to fall in love with this place.

The ten minute-drive to Norquay is the shortest hotel to slope commute from Banff, and although the smallest of the Big 3, it does have a tubing slope, where you can whizz downhill in a rubber ring. There are 36 runs available during peak season, but Norquay lacks the long runs of Lake Louise and Sunshine Village. We leave our skis behind and take a ride to the top of the mountain to admire the views. Our guide tells us that on Valentine’s Day, the chairlift is used for ski speed dating, with singletons queuing up to share the ride amid romantic mountaintops. ◆ Lauren Taylor was a guest of Canadian Affair (020 7616 9933; www.canadianaffair.com) who offers a seven-night Banff Lake Louise ski trip from £719 per person. Includes flights from London Gatwick to Calgary, airport transfers and accommodation (room only) at the Inns of Banff on selected dates in January and February 2015. Lift passes cost from £33 per day (based on adult rate).

COLEMAN

cuts the mustard with her highly-praised pork belly and Scotch egg dish). “I had a tweet from Nigella,” says the 31-year-old former credit controller, referring to her long-time food idol, Nigella Lawson. “It was something like, ‘Just back from Brazil... OMG so happy my girl Natalie Coleman won’. It was about 11 o’clock at night on a Friday... well, I called everyone, didn’t I? I was like, ‘Nigella tweeted me!’ I was so happy,” recalls the foodie, who was born and bred in East London. Coleman jokes that she’ll be putting her newfound status to good use, to help her with a meal she’s included in her new cookbook, Winning Recipes For Every Day. In it, she offers up her late Nan’s corned beef hash pie as a tribute to the “brilliant cook”, who often whizzed up cakes and treats for her granddaughter. “The thing is, my Nan died when I was 16 and no one knows her recipe, she literally took it to the grave with her,” Coleman explains. “I spoke to Nan’s sister, because the pie’s a Northern thing and she’s up in Sunderland. The Hairy Bikers would probably know what the recipe is, because they’re from around there. They’d know.” Even without the help of the two cheerful bikers, a bit of cooking intuition and a few tweaks to the seasoning meant Coleman eventually served up a version of the pie that got a big thumbs up from her family.

I

t’s been a year since she won MasterChef, but life is still throwing up surprises for Natalie Coleman.

There was the MasterChef: The Finalists cookbook, which she co-wrote with runnersup Dale Williams and Larkin Cen, some very exciting work placements in the kitchens of celebrity chefs Tom Kerridge, Michel Roux Jr. and Marcus Wareing, and the hours she passed chewing the fat with childhood hero Ade Edmondson, who won Celebrity MasterChef last year. “Jennifer Saunders tweeted me, because I was going up to the BBC Good Food Show and [her husband] Ade was going to be there,” recalls Coleman, laughing as she admits she “screamed” with joy when Saunders followed her on Twitter. “I spent a whole day with Ade. We were just geeking off about cooking and talking about recipes and gadgets. That was crazy,” she adds. She received another ‘pinch-me’ moment a few days after scooping the coveted MasterChef winner title (which she earned

86 NOVEMBER 2014

On a similar note, she hopes her recipes will inspire home cooks to experiment in the kitchen. “I don’t like picking up cookbooks that you can’t use,” explains Coleman, who rates Lawson, Delia Smith, Jamie Oliver and the recipe database on the BBC Good Food website. “I used to follow recipes to a T, but then you get more confident, which is what I want people to do with my book.” The thought of her cookbook sitting on shelves alongside the Smiths, Olivers and Lawsons is mind-bending for Coleman. “It’s mad really, isn’t it? Even looking at the copies [of my book], it doesn’t feel like it’s all real yet,” she says. “It’s all a bit hard to take in, really. It is a bit overwhelming... It really does open up so many doors, that competition.” If you fancy opening the door to some of Coleman’s culinary delights, here are three recipes from her new book.

SLOW ROASTED LAMB WITH BUTTER BEANS AND SALSA VERDE (Serves 4-6) For the lamb and beans: 2.5kg lamb shoulder 4 garlic cloves, peeled and halved 2 rosemary sprigs 2 red onions, peeled and quartered 2 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks 2 celery sticks, cut into chunks 100ml white wine 3 x 400g tins of butter beans, drained Olive oil Salt and pepper For the Salsa Verde: Juice of 1 lemon 100ml olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 1/2 red onion, roughly diced 1tsp Dijon mustard 15g fresh parsley, leaves and stalks roughly chopped 10g fresh basil, leaves and stalks roughly chopped 15g fresh dill, leaves and stalks roughly chopped 15g fresh mint (leaves only), roughly chopped 6 anchovies 1tbsp capers Salt and pepper Preheat the oven to 160C/140C fan/gas mark 3.

Use a small paring knife to make eight insertions into the lamb shoulder. In each hole, put half a clove of garlic and a small sprig of rosemary. Put the onions, carrots and celery in a large roasting tin and place the lamb shoulder on top. Drizzle it with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Pour the wine and 200ml of water into the roasting tin, cover with foil and cook in the oven for two hours and 15 minutes. After this time, remove the foil, add the butter beans and cook for a further 45 minutes. Meanwhile, make the Salsa Verde. Place all the ingredients into a food processor and blend into a fine puree. Season with salt and pepper and set aside until ready to serve. When the lamb is cooked, remove from the oven and leave to rest for 10-15 minutes before carving. Serve with the butter beans, vegetables and Salsa Verde.

SPANISH CHORIZO AND CHICKPEA STEW (Serves 6) 2tbsp olive oil, plus extra for drizzling 1 large onion, finely diced 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into 1cm chunks 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into 1cm chunks 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped or crushed 2 bay leaves 250g cooking chorizo, skin removed and cut into 1cm slices 1/2tsp cayenne pepper 1tsp smoked paprika 2 x 400g tins of chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 x 400g tin of cherry tomatoes 1 x 400g tin of chopped tomatoes 200ml chicken stock 3tbsp finely chopped parsley 200g spinach 2tbsp sherry vinegar Salt and pepper Crusty bread, to serve

Heat the olive oil in a large pot (with a lid) over a medium heat and gently fry the onion for three to four minutes until softened, then add the red and yellow peppers and cook for a further five minutes until softened. Do not let them brown. Add the garlic and bay leaves and cook for a further minute, stirring frequently, then add the chorizo and cook for another five minutes, continuing to stir so the garlic doesn’t burn or catch on the bottom of the pan. After five minutes, add the cayenne pepper and paprika, stir so everything is mixed well, and cook for two minutes. Add the chickpeas and cook for three minutes, then add both the tinned cherry tomatoes and chopped tomatoes and cook for two minutes. Finally, pour in the chicken stock, turn up the heat and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat by half and cook with the lid on for 45 minutes, stirring every so often to make sure nothing catches on the bottom of the pan. After 45 minutes, remove the lid from the pan and cook for a further 45 minutes without the lid, so the stew thickens. Stir regularly so it doesn’t stick or burn. After this time, add the parsley and cook for two minutes. Add the spinach, put the lid on and cook for two to three minutes until wilted, then give it a good stir so it’s all well mixed. Season with salt and pepper. Mix in the sherry vinegar - you may want to add a little more to taste, but do taste it first. Remove the bay leaves and discard. Drizzle with a little olive oil and serve with crusty bread. NOVEMBER 2014 87

BUTTERNUT SQUASH MASCARPONE TART (Serves 6-8) 1 medium butternut squash, peeled and chopped into 1-2cm chunks (chopped weight 650g) Leaves from 1 rosemary sprig 1tbsp olive oil, plus extra for drizzling 25g butter 1 1/2 large red onions, sliced 1tbsp caster sugar 4-5tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 x 375g sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry 2tbsp pine nuts 4-5tbsp mascarpone cheese 1 red chilli, finely sliced, or 1/2tsp dried chilli flakes (optional) 1 egg, beaten, for glazing Handful of rocket leaves, to garnish (optional) Salt and pepper Preheat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas mark 7.

Place the butternut squash in a baking tray and sprinkle with the rosemary leaves. Drizzle with a good glug of olive oil and season with salt. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until the butternut squash is tender. Meanwhile, in a frying pan set on a low heat, warm the tablespoon of olive oil and melt the butter. Add the onions, sugar and four tablespoons of balsamic vinegar, and season well with salt and pepper. Cook gently for 20-25 minutes until the onions are softened and caramelised. Taste the onions while cooking, as you may need to add the extra spoonful of vinegar. Just before the butternut squash and onions are ready, unroll the pastry onto a large baking sheet and score a border around the pastry, about 1.5cm from the edge, like a picture frame. Using a fork, prick all over the pastry inside the ‘frame’. When the squash and onions are ready, remove the onions from the pan using a slotted spoon to ensure that any excess oil is left behind. Spread the onions evenly over the centre of the pastry (staying within the border), scatter with the squash, sprinkle on the pine nuts and dollop the mascarpone on top. Season with a little more salt and a good grinding of pepper. Sprinkle with the chopped red chilli or chilli flakes, if using. Brush the border with beaten egg, so you get a nice shine on the pastry. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Garnish with rocket leaves, if using.

Food

Drink Overview 90 NOVEMBER 2014

The British queen is a new addition to Locksbottom. Owned by The White Brasserie company, it offers a warm homely traditional country pub feel to the front, and a large but homely restaurant to the rear with open kitchens, rugs and comfortable seating. We visited on a Sunday when tables were full to bursting of families enjoying Sunday lunch.

Set in what looks like a miniature tudor building with a pretty front entrance and gardens, Murinci’s is a fine dining destination for the locals. As we visited on a Wednesday night the restaurant wasn’t overly busy, however there were enough diners to create a nice low level buzz.

The service was effortless and welcoming. We were served by three different members of staff and the consistency and communication between them was great. We were even offered the phone to use as we couldn’t get a reception on our mobiles!

We were met at the door with a warm and energetic welcome. Our waiter for the evening made recommendations on the menu and offered some good advice on a wine to please both parties.

There are dishes to suit all kinds of palettes with two different menu options for children - a real bonus for a local restaurant. To start, I chose the pan-fried lamb sweetbreads, served with pickled wild mushrooms, roasted hazelnuts and mixed leaves. The sweetbreads were plump and rich and went amazingly well with the rest of the dish with flavours popping at every mouthful. For main, I opted for the roast Scottish scallops served with smoked bacon, autumn vegetables and meuniere sauce - another delicious dish that was well balanced with the smoked bacon offering perfect seasoning. For dessert, I went all out for the chocolate souffle with bitter chocolate ice cream. The chocolate oozed from the middle of the souffle and the bitterness of the ice cream cut through the richness of the dessert - another perfect dish.

The main menu has an extensive range of dishes to choose from, with a set menu option also available at a very reasonable price. All dishes were beautifully presented - like art on a plate. We were surprised with an amuse bouche of freshly made cannelloni stuffed with spinach and ricotta, a nice flavour and perfectly cooked moreish pasta. To start, I chose the grilled chilli king prawns with asparagus tips and a red pepper pesto. The prawns were huge, meaty and well cooked. For main, I opted for lamb cutlets served with fondant potatoes, a selection of vegetables and rosemary jus. The lamb was cooked medium, just as I asked and were juicy and full of flavour. For dessert, I had the strawberry panna cotta - creamy, delicious, and served with a side of berries.

We started with a house (Beefeater) gin and tonic served with a good squeeze of lime and plenty of ice. There are a wide selection of wines available to order by the bottle and the glass. I opted for Viogioner which cut through the richness of the sweetbreads and enhanced the sweetness of the scallops.

To start, we enjoyed a nice gin and tonic served with plenty of ice. To accompany the meal, our waiter recommended that we try the Castello del Poggio - a red that accompanied all dishes well and was light and fruity in flavour.

Good food guaranteed in a warm and friendly local.

Refined Indian Dining in Bromley

T

hings have changed at Cinnamon Culture as the wellestablished modern Indian venue approaches its fourth year in business; but be reassured, the evolution is only for the better. For the third year running, the restaurant remains Bromley’s only Michelinrecommended Indian entry, a listing in the prestigious Harden’s guide further reinforcing Cinnamon Culture’s reputation as a place to enjoy some particularly fine dining. So, to best reflect the quality of the food - which two weeks ago saw Cinnamon Culture achieve the title of National Curry Week’s ‘Best Innovative Signature Dish 2014’ for Buffalo kurumulaku with khajoori naan - the restaurant has undergone both internal and external refurbishment, the sleek new image offering yet another good reason to visit. If you’re yet to have the fine dining experience, prepare to be wowed; if you’re a loyal regular, prepare to be more impressed than ever. As an active member of the local community, Cinnamon Culture’s Manpreet Dhingra believes the changes will be warmly welcomed by existing fans, and will woo new ones, too. Through a wide variety of dedicated food festivals, menus have already introduced customers to dishes direct from India’s historic royal courts and extensive coastlines; but the patron is adamant that there’s much more to explore. Menus will continue to move with the seasons – showcasing the very best produce Kent has on its own doorstep wherever possible. Recent Game Festival proved ‘wildly’ popular with diners and critics alike; rave reviews demonstrating just how well thoroughly British produce can pair with Indian ingredients and methods when considered carefully and executed with style.

Not too many neighbourhoods are lucky enough to have a restaurant like Cinnamon Culture so close by – and refreshingly, the team feels every bit as fortuitous to have opened in an area where there’s such an appetite for what’s on offer. The ongoing aim is to offer as warm a welcome as the venue itself has received ever since throwing open those doors back in 2011; whether guests arrive in need of a carefully-crafted cocktail and a few bar bites, want to win over a business contact over a swiftly-served lunch, or plan to stay ensconced for the entire evening as they enjoy the tasting menu with a loved one.

firm favourite with both guests and staff, enabling everyone to catch up and relax over as many courses as inclination affords and time permits. Children are warmly welcomed, too, and both set and a la carte menus offer ample choice for young and old alike. A visit is a pleasing prospect at any time of year, but with the festive countdown almost underway and venues booking up fast, there’s no better time to pop in and put Cinnamon Culture’s regionally-inspired, brightly-modern Indian menus through their paces.
