Bringing back happy memories

A

young pup called Annie is helping to bring back some lovely memories for Sue Machin.

Annie’s on her journey to becoming a lifechanging guide dog, with Sue following her progress every step of the way.

Sue chose to name a puppy after her mum, Ann, after she passed away. Ann had always loved dogs, and loved helping people too, so Sue felt that supporting Guide Dogs in her memory was the perfect thing to do.

Sue has loved receiving the updates from Guide Dogs on Annie’s progress. She says: “Annie sounds like mum – she loves her food, she’s a little headstrong, but kind and gentle too!”

The best moment was meeting Annie with her puppy walker, Janet. “It brought back all the good memories of mum,” she says. “It’s been so worthwhile and knowing someone will benefit is wonderful.”

PLANNING FOR YOUR INHERITANCE Michelle Groves, Financial Adviser at Scrutton Bland explains the new rules about Inheritance Tax (IHT) and how you can maximise the sum that you pass on to your descendants.

W

hat is Inheritance Tax (IHT)?

When you die, your estate will be taxed at 40% (or 36% if you leave at least 10% of your assets to a charity) on the value of your assets above the IHT threshold of £325,000. Your assets can include your house, cars, businesses you own, investments you have made, and cash in the bank. Couples can leave wealth to one another without IHT being chargeable, so for a couple the threshold is £650,000.

So what has changed?

Whilst the basic individual allowance of £325,000 remains unchanged, a new allowance known as the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) was introduced on the 6th April 2017 and is available when the deceased’s main residence is being passed down to direct descendants. e rules are fiendishly complex!

How much can I save in Inheritance Tax? e RNRB will be phased in over four years starting in 2017 at £100,000 per person, and will increase by £25,000 per year until it reaches £175,000 by April 2020. is is the maximum sum that can be claimed per person so would be reduced if the value of the property was less than this. Two individual allowances and two full RNRBs equate to £1 million.

Who can benefit? e RNRB is only available where the main

residence passes to children, but includes adopted and foster children, step children and linear descendants eg grandchildren. Also a husband, wife or civil partner of a lineal descendant (including their widow, widower or surviving civil partner).

Is there an upper limit?

Yes, the RNRB will be reduced by £1 for every £2 that the deceased's net estate exceeds £2million. is means that in 2017 the allowance cannot be claimed where the net estate is valued at more than £2.2million.

What if I own more than one property?

Or if I want to downsize?

Only one residential property will qualify and you must have owned and lived in the property at some time. A property that you owned but never lived in, such as a buy-to-let, won’t qualify.

If you didn’t own a home at the time of death because you had sold it or given it away on or after 8 July 2015, your representatives may be able to claim a ‘downsizing addition’. e amount of the downsizing addition will usually be the same as the additional threshold that was lost when your former home was removed from your estate. e property disposed of must have qualified for the RNRB and the replacement property/assets must form part of the estate and be passing to descendants. n

he Oak-Tree Schools have seen more and more families choose their brand of excellent independent education over recent years. With Open Day season here again, Braeside, Coopersale Hall, Normanhurst and Oaklands have been preparing to open their doors to welcome the many hopeful prospective families looking for the best education for their children.

At Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, Headmistress Claire Osborn will be greeting the prospective parents, “I am very much looking forward to my Open Day with Braeside. I’m always very pleased to be able to discuss Braeside’s reputation as a local school with strong academic achievement. e developments that have been made since Braeside became part of the Oak-Tree Group in 2015 have been very positive. We now share curricular and extra-curricular activities with Normanhurst, which benefits both sets of pupils when they work together collaboratively.”

Braeside’s Open Day is Wednesday 4 October from 9.15am at the Juniors and 6pm at the Seniors.

etting out into Epping Forest and exploring the woodland floor reveals some interesting sights at this time of year. If you look closely, you’ll find the wonderful forms and colours of seasonal fungi appear, seemingly springing up overnight, as if by magic.

Much of Epping Forest is designated as a Site of Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation and fungi play an important part in receiving these designations, particularly as Epping Forest is home to some of the rarest species of fungi which are of national importance.

It’s important that fungi are protected and conserved. For this reason, it’s against the byelaws to collect any fungi from Epping Forest. As well as depleting the fruiting bodies of the fungi themselves, illegal collection of the mushrooms takes away a valuable food source and habitat for the other wildlife who call Epping Forest their home. Additionally, large numbers of commercial collectors entering the Forest cause general damage to the ancient woodland environment as well as significantly disturbing usually peaceful areas which are an important sanctuary for wildlife.

Collecting fungi impacts the woodland’s biodiversity by breaking the complex cycle of decay and renewal. In the longer term, removal of fungi is ultimately detrimental to the visitor experience.

Visitors to Epping Forest are very welcome to come along and enjoy the early autumn spectacle of the fungi. Adults and children alike can enjoy an expedition into the woods to spot and attempt to identify fungi. e variable and often colourful forms of the fungi are particularly attractive to photograph or take artistic inspiration from. However, please leave the fungi as you find it. is gives all visitors to Epping Forest a chance to enjoy it, now and in the future. ere are also some great events running in Epping Forest to help you make the most of the ancient woodland on your doorstep this autumn, including Bushcraft activities for children and the annual celebration of the size and scale of Epping Forest, e Centenary Walk. is year, the walk, approximately 12 miles in length, starting at Epping Forest’s southern-most tip in Forest Gate, concluding in Epping to the north, takes place on 17 September. Once again, the Centenary Walk will kick-off the annual Epping Forest Walking Festival, with many fantastic walks organised throughout the autumn to inspire you to make the most of this special place at this, perhaps most glorious time of year, when the tree canopy transforms from greens to russets, yellows and browns.

“I am delighted with the retail tenancies we have been able to secure, offering shoppers the chance to purchase a wide variety of items.

Previous analysis has told us that 75% of local people have been travelling to places outside the district to do much of their shopping. is is particularly the case for items such as clothing, electrical and white goods. ese new shops will not only complement existing local high street businesses in particular Loughton Broadway, but will provide a better opportunity for residents to

find what they are looking for closer to home.” “ere are 13 units at the shopping park and most have already been let, with retailers putting the final touches to the interior design of their shops before opening. Negotiations are taking place to let the final few units and I am confident we will be able to announce these in the next few weeks.”

It is thought that up to 200 jobs will be created, making the shopping park one of the districts major employers. Many locals will be able to gain employment closer to where they live and won’t have to spend as much time or money on travelling to and from work.

Plans for a new shopping park were put forward in 2010 and were given the green light by local councillors. Structural works on the shopping park began last summer along with a number of much needed improvements by Essex County Council to the local road network. e new shops are just a short walk from Debden tube station. A car park with 370 general and 18 disabled parking bays is situated in front of the shops as well as 10 electric charging points. ere is also 3 cycle racks with space for 34 bikes.

Councillor Whitbread continued: “Business rates and rent of the retail units will generate income for Epping Forest District Council. is will be money we can plough back into local services for residents and help to continue maintaining a low Council Tax.” n

Business owners feel that having a website is a ticked box exercise. It’s done and it’s dusted but does it work? Is it functional or a Palaeolithic presence on the internet?

Remember when websites were simply an internet brochure? If this is your website, then it’s time to look again. An old or classic website implies that your company is also classic, out-of-date, unloved and need of attention. is is not the message that most of us would like to project to our target audience about our business.

Every marketing campaign or tool should direct traffic to your website: Press releases, advertisements, Adword campaigns, promotions, latest news, social media. e experience should be an interesting journey to an exciting destination. It is also increasingly important to consider your website as a software application and not a stagnant tool. With so many reasonable plug-ins and facilities, it is a shame not to maximise potential to enhance the website experience and to also gain something from the viewers taking a peek into your cyber shop window; database capture forms, bookings or purchases via e-commerce (if applicable), perhaps live chat, interaction at some level, offer them a freebie for their time, perhaps a downloadable brochure or fact sheet. is gives credibility to your products or service and makes you more memorable in the long-term.

A virtual experience that represents your company, services or products will keep the viewer on your website for a longer period and hopefully drive the call to action for them to make an enquiry, book something or make a purchase. It is also essential that shopping is easy and not too complicated. Ensure that this is a quick and efficient facility which works on mobile phones and/or iPads. Which brings me to another major point – your website must be mobile responsive i.e. adapts its size to all devices.

T

he kids are back to school, college or university. e house is beginning to feel normal, quiet at times, noisy after 4 p.m. but at the very least, there’s some semblance of a routine as compared to the mayhem of summer holidays and the full house scenario. e August holiday is eagerly anticipated, everybody looks forward to the lack of routine and sense of independence. It’s certainly fun in the beginning, more difficult as the end of the holiday approaches and then a relief to be back into a certain level of routine by the first week in September.

For wives/mothers (and not forgetting certain fathers) especially those juggling parental commitments with a career and home responsibilities too is very difficult.

Although we enjoy our lives, sometimes you feel so stressed and that there’s just too many plates to juggle and they will all topple down and break. e only way we can possibly help everybody else is to look after ourselves first and be aware that we too have to recharge, feel strong and confident before going into full multi-tasking mode.

So how do we begin? All mothers (or primary carer fathers) put themselves at the bottom of the list of priorities. When everybody is happy and sorted do we consider our own needs, especially if working too. But one day off, JUST ONE for ourselves is not being selfish.

And with this precious time, we should strategize our own reboot mechanism.

Some people need retail therapy, lunch with friends, tv-in-bed day or spa. Spa can be an actual visit (or preferably weekend) but at the very least, treatments which help to make us feel good about ourselves, whether nails, toes, massage, body treatments or facials. With great products and warm firm hands massaging relaxing creams into the skin, an eye-mask with a neck/shoulder massage too can undo weeks of stress.

I recently had a different type of a massage; An Endermologie experience by Sue Ali from Endermospa. (Note they are currently moving premises from Buckhurst Hill to Loughton). ‘Rejuvenating the skin from within!’ Scientifically proven, ENDERMOLOGIE is natural and pleasant technique that gently stimulates the skin to rehydrate and tighten. My complexion felt brighter and what was beginning to feel loose or sagging (due to age and probably weariness!) suddenly felt taut.

Many products make creative promises but I loved the experience. I could actually feel my skin improve as the machine worked its magic across my face.

Although I have only had one treatment so far, more are planned… e ageing reboot is in process!

GEORGIA’S INVISALIGN JOURNEY BEGINS… H

i my name is Georgia.

I became known in the media after appearing in e Only Way is Essex for 2 series when I was 19. I then decided to step out of the limelight for a while until I received a call asking me to appear on Love Island. Love Island has changed my life beyond belief and more than I could ever have imagined, people recognise me everywhere I go.

When I left the villa I received really positive feedback from the show, but I also received some negative comments about my teeth. I had always been quite happy with my teeth up to this point, but after I watched myself back I could see that my teeth were not perfect, especially from a side profile and as I am GEORGIA HARRISON planning on continuing in TV I thought I had better look into treatment for them sooner rather than later.

I was originally offered Veneers, but after looking further into the treatment I decided to take the much easier, less invasive, safer route of using Invisalign clear braces.

What made you practice what you are doing?

y name is Manav Bawa, I am a Cosmetic Doctor and a GP. I am available at clinics in South Woodford, Wanstead, Hainault, Loughton and Waltham Abbey.

I love the positive effect even just a little bit of cosmetic treatment can have, it can help patients’ confidence as well as the medical effects, for example, one of the most life changing effects is using Botox® for grinding teeth at night, it reduces the grinding and the headaches caused by this. I also really enjoy the practical side of medicine, hence my experience in Surgery for 5 years, including Plastic Surgery.

What qualifications do you have?

After becoming a doctor in 2008, I completed a Diploma in Surgical Science at the University of Edinburgh as well as obtaining the prestigious membership to the Royal College of Surgeons. A passion of teaching led me to complete a part-time Masters in Surgical Education at the world-renowned Imperial College London, and last month I also qualified as a GP. You would have thought I would be tired of studying… however I am currently completing the Level 7 Certificate in Aesthetic Medicine (Master’s level).

What are your business ethics?

Honesty and sincerity is an extremely important part of my work. I will always put the patient’s best interests first, for example, I have

been known to advise patients they actually do not need treatment. I would rather be honest with my patients and ensure they receive gold standard and safe care.

What is important to you in cosmetic medicine?

Patient safety! It is so important to be fully trained and regulated, for example, we must know and understand the anatomy and physiology of the human face to a deep level, as well as being able to treat any complications competently. e patient journey is important to me too. I spend a lot of time listening to my patients, which enables me to really understand what they are looking for.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?

I believe if you do something you enjoy, it doesn’t feel like work! I am lucky I feel passionate about cosmetic medicine and I really do enjoy the work I do. Outside of medicine I enjoy spending time with my young family, and I keep promising myself I need to go back to the gym! n

ip filler is one of the most sought after treatments in the cosmetic world right now, and there is no doubt celebrities have really got us all excited about the perfect pout!

Whether it is subtle enhancement or bigger and better, definition or fullness, we can achieve this with different amounts and different types of dermal filler… Talking about types of filler...there are so many on the market I lose count! I believe in the science of one particular brand, which I have stuck to and have seen excellent results so far. One of my patient’s, Jenny, requested lip enhancement and emphasised a subtle change in appearance. I chose to avoid philtrim injections (the lines between the nose and middle of the lips) as she already had excellent definition and the much sought after ‘Cupids Bow’. With subtle enhancement, I was able to achieve Jenny’s expectations.

It is really important to choose a practitioner who will take their time, listen and assess patients on an individual basis, and formulate a bespoke plan as I did with Jenny, rather than the same for everyone. We all know one size does not fit all!

“Firstly Dr Bawa took my medical history and gave me the consultation. We chose to use 1ml of Juvederm® Ultra 3. Firstly Dr Bawa injected my vermillion border on my upper lip, a little in the corners of my upper lip, and then my lower lip. Every time the Doctor injected he sat me up to see how the shape was taking place. en he injected the body of my upper lip and a little into the body of my lower lip to balance the look (he injected slightly more into my left lower lip to balance it even more). He sat me up after every step of the injections and really took his time. I've never had anybody take so much time to perfect my lips before. e whole time Dr Bawa was asking if I was okay and if I needed more numbing cream. e Juvederm® was massaged to avoid lumps and give the right shape. e Doctor also gave me a mirror every time he sat me up to assess me, involving me in my treatment every step of the way. When I saw the final result I was stunned! I really love my new lips and they should last the correct amount of time too. For the next couple of days I used ice and took Ibuprofen and Arnica to treat the swelling. Now that the swelling has subsided I have a lovely natural pout helping me to look more youthful. “BYE-BYE LIPOEDEMA!” As HYPOXI, compared to a liposuction, only cost a fractional amount I treated myself to some nice clothes from the money I saved.

ndrea Stiller (47), Germany. e mother of two suffers from a double- sided lipoedema. She trained 12 weeks at the HYPOXI-Studio Reiskirchen.

“Before I entered the HYPOXI-Studio a true doctor’s marathon already lay behind me. e reason: I suffered from a double-sided lipoedema. Since my two pregnancies things got worse. Buttocks and legs just were not recognizable anymore; my old figure became a memory only. At first I tried with countless diets.

Had I known then that I suffered from lipoedema I could have avoided all this.

(Editor’s note: Lipoedema is a disorder in the fat distribution and leads to swellings usually on the thighs and lower legs. erefore, the fat tissue occurring with lipoedema is not an overweight issue in that sense. e fat cells reproduce themselves at the affected body parts, and the stored fat can’t be removed due to a poor blood circulation and a disturbed lymphatic drainage.

Long since medical specialists include lipoedema in the top three of the most common gynaecological diseases. e problem: A diagnosis can only be made by specialists. Many women therefore don’t even know that they are suffering from lipoedema.

“Once it was certain, all doctors advised me to have liposuction – with exception of my family doctor. He suspected risks for my lymphatic system which would extremely suffer from a liposuction. At first I was completely devastated.

I had already put up with this intervention although I was terrified and an operation would have been a heavy financial burden for me.

However my doctors concerns made me insecure. By this time my quality in life was down at a lowest point. Also the people around me suffered due to my heavy worries. Finally a friend of mine came up with the recommendation to give the HYPOXI-Method a try. Simply from then on everything changed.”

issable, sensuous, youthful and plump lips appear to be the key words clients use when referring to how they would like their lip and mouth area to look.Therefore, it is essential to understand how the lip area ages and why certain structural changes occur.

The lip and mouth area is exercised daily, talking, eating, smoking & chewing gum all work the muscles around the top lip known as orbicularis oculi and on the lower aspect the depressor anguli oris.

Because of the muscle working hard, we see over time that in some individuals prominent vertical lines appear across the upper lip radiating from the base of the nose often referred to as 'smokers lines' regardless if you have smoked or not! These lines can span across the lower lip also.

In conjunction to this, the ageing process is responsible for the loss of the vermillion border which runs along the edge of the upper and lower lip. This gives the mouth a sharper, more defined outline and stops the dreaded lip stick bleed. In relation to treatment options, dermal fillers can really help to smooth out these vertical lines by plumping up the collagen depleted area. Plexr which is a plasma emission application, can help lessen the depth of the creases and smooth out the finer lines by lifting, shrinking and tightening the skin tissue. The edge of the lips is greatly rejuvenated with small amounts of filler, remember

Furthermore we need to consider the fact of losing bone density as we age, our gums can recede and we become flatter on our upper lip, a longer space can become more noticeable between the base of the nose and the Cupid's bow. By building up this area naturally it gives a more defined & younger lift to the mouth.

Enhancing the Home with an Indoor Pool Paul Green and his wife had always wanted an indoor pool, a dream that was made possible when they moved to a new home and had the space to extend.

T

hey began researching companies in the area that would be able to meet their requirements. Keen to use a well-known firm that was reputable and a specialist in the area, the couple wanted to find a company that had the capability to manage the whole project, removing the need for individual contractors. The Green’s research and local connections led them to Origin, the UK’s original luxury indoor pool company.

Origin is the way Forward Paul contacted Origin and arranged a meeting. “It was really good to see the owner of the business taking a personal interest. He said all the right things and the advice he gave was great. They organised an onsite visit for us so that we could get a feel for the work they had previously done. This really solidified our decision to choose them”. Paul also had a local contact who lived in the area and had experience with Origin. He gave the company a glowing recommendation.

the house. It was essential it didn’t stand out but internally, they wanted a high quality, modern and contemporary style.

Paul adds: “We drew a lot of inspiration from pictures of other high end pools and I used these to demonstrate to Origin and the architect what we wanted.”

The couple wanted a bright and spacious area.

Colour changing lighting and iridescent tiling which reflects the light perfectly, both provide the feel of luxury.

In addition to creating a relaxing space with a spa pool, it was also important to Paul that he could use the pool to maintain his fitness. The space to build an Olympic sized pool wasn’t available, so Paul decided to install swim jets that create resistance as he swims, providing a more challenging exercise regime.

Brilliant Builders During the project, the couple were kept up to date with progress. The Origin team were available to chat through the project whenever they wanted, including regular meetings to discuss finishes and make other important decisions as they went along.

Paul was extremely impressed with the construction team. Despite undertaking a huge build project, they kept disruption to a minimum and didn’t knock through into the Green’s property until it was essential. This helped to keep the property secure throughout. “The team were great, they kept the site as clean as they could and they were all extremely friendly. Once you get over the mental hurdle that your property is going to be a bit chaotic for a few months, this is a really exciting part of the project as you begin to see your pool take shape”.

Paul and his family couldn’t be happier with the space they have created: “I’ve always used swimming as a form of exercise.

I used to visit a local hotel three times a week before we had our pool installed and this proved difficult if I was working late.

Now, I use the pool five times a week and when the rest of the family visit, they have a fantastic space for leisure and relaxation.

Especially our granddaughter, she’s three years old and just loves splashing around when she visits.”

Paul looks at it as more than a pool though; it’s an extension of his home: “The good thing about the space is that it’s a room in its own right. Although my wife and I may have slightly different agendas when it comes to the pool – I primarily use it for fitness and she will use it for leisure. It’s also a very pleasant space to, relax and do things such as have a drink or read a book. Our friends are amazed by the complexity of the design!”

So, would the Green’s recommend Origin? “Absolutely, they were honest, realistic and clearly experienced – they had the whole package.”
