OUT & ABOUT

– We put fantastic local businesses and exciting events in the spotlight each month –

CHAPTER ONE, Farnborough Common, Locksbottom, Orpington

Overview

Chapter One is situated just off the south circular road, near Farnborough and Bromley and for the last 20 years, has stood out as one of Greater London’s top dining destinations. The multi award winning 3 AA rosette winning restaurant, has been under the ownership of Chef Andrew McCleish and Marcel Faulstich since 2017. The cuisine celebrates the best of both British and European cuisine using seasonal ingredients and can be enjoyed in either the formal restaurant, or the more relaxed brasserie.

Food & Drink

We ordered from the Alacarte menu, To begin, my partner opting for the Dorset snail Bourguignon, which was perfectly cooked, providing mild earthy tones and was served in a garlic Espuma, garlic crouton and parsley. I went for the Lobster Raviolo in lobster and indulgent tasting cognac cream sauce, which paired perfectly. To accompany dishes, we started with the Gerard Tremblay Chablis these, which was clean, crisp and delivered subtle apple and pear notes.

For my main, I went for the roast Scottish salmon with caramelized Aubergine and potato gratin. This was nice and flaky and not in anyway infused or overpowered by the aubergine. My partner went for fallow venison haunch with venison pie and braised red cabbage. The Venison was extremely succulent and lean, with a rich gamey flavour. The dish was not in anyway too heavy but was complimented with the addition of some beautifully cooked green beans in shallot butter. My partner accompanied this with Le Cedre Cahors Vintage Malbec, a full-bodied wine presenting flavours of ripe dark fruits, with an elegant finish. It’s clear from both the quality of all of the dishes and the carefully curated AA noted wine list that a great deal of effort has been put into ensuring a great dining experience.

For dessert I indulged in the Manjari Black forest gateau with chocolate sorbet and white chocolate aero, (pictured). The chocolate cake was pleasantly rich and went superbly with the tangy Cherry sorbet.

My partner had the baked coffee tart with coffee cremeux, and a black jelly brown butter crumb, which had a crisp and buttery texture while the coffee cremeux, was deliciously smooth, without being dense.

Summary

Although rightly thought of as somewhere “special” to go amongst locals of the restaurant and living up to this description, with it’s reasonably priced brasserie with it’s regular events calendar, Chapter One is definitely somewhere you should equally visit for a more relaxed dining experience.

The Melk Coffee Co Story

Ihave loved good coffee for as long as I can remember, and I have followed its migration into our daily lives over the past 25 years. I found myself venturing far and wide to find the best coffee and the best coffee shops. Places that felt warm and inviting and that served great coffee and food. In 2018 I visited Melbourne and found a different level in flavours and barista skills, and I wanted to be a part of that journey. Being local myself , in Sidcup virtually all my life I wanted that first venture to be there where I knew the people the best. Fast forward to 2021 and I am training to be a Barista and working part time in a local coffee shop. That really gave me the impetus to start my own business. So at the start of 2023 I signed the lease on our first premises in Sidcup and Melk Coffee Co was born.

Right from the start it was a pleasure to educate people in the ways of making great flavoursome speciality coffee. We now offer our daily espresso blend plus a single origin and our fabulous decaf.

We serve a range of cakes, pastries and tasty snacks and we also host barista evenings to try and teach people not to be afraid of investing in a home machine and how to best navigate the sometimes-scary subject of weighing beans and timed extraction and latte art.

Shop number two was always going to happen, it was all about location though. Chislehurst is great as I feel people there already know about good coffee but have never been able to access it until now.

Chislehurst has opened great opportunities for us like pairing with running clubs, Pilates studios and local schools. Chislehurst has started well for us and the customers have been so supportive . They appreciate that great coffee is finally on their doorstep.  Melk number 3 will be coming soon…

Making a move this year?

When it comes to buying a property, the timing of your purchase can influence pricing, competition, and the overall buying process. Here Temitope Okenla, Conveyancing Assistant at Thomas Dunton Solicitors LLP, discusses ways you can maximise your opportunities and minimise the risks involved in the conveyancing process.

Consider Seasonal Trends:

Spring (March - May) - typically the most active period, but increased competition can lead to higher asking prices.

Summer (June - August) – quieter due to the holiday season, but less competition may mean better affordability. Based on current timelines, now is a good time to start your search if you’re hoping to move by Christmas or the school application deadlines (mid-January). Be mindful that properties in school catchment areas may have higher demand as a result.

Autumn (September - November) - more homes generally come to market, and sellers aiming to complete before year-end may be more open to negotiations. If you’re in a position to act quickly, this may be best for you.

Winter (December - February) - bad weather and the festive period can cause delays in activity. We recommend using this quieter period to research properties or negotiate deals.

Think about financial and economical events:

Budget announcements in March and October often include property-related measures e.g. changes to tax policies and housing schemes. We recommend being up to date with current government initiatives and relevant property-related taxes when starting your search. Ongoing interest rate announcements will affect mortgage rates.

Elections or financial crises can influence buyer confidence and market activity. Monitor market stability before committing to buy your home.

Research local events:

Research planned development projects in your preferred area; infrastructure or commercial projects can increase property values (and cause disruption). Similarly, areas hosting community events may be more attractive for potential buyers. Consider visiting the area during events to understand the impact.

COMMUNITY LANGUAGES at Bishop Challoner School

At Bishop Challoner School, our Community Languages programme is flourishing, bringing together an ever-growing number of junior and senior students who share a passion for language learning. These sessions go beyond traditional classroom learning, offering an immersive experience through interactive activities such as games, role-plays, and even dancing to music from around the world.

Language learning at Bishop Challoner goes beyond vocabulary and grammar—it fosters cultural understanding and global awareness. We celebrate both our own culture and the diverse communities around us, appreciating the wide variety of languages spoken locally and internationally. A global outlook helps students become open-minded citizens, deepening their appreciation for their own identity while encouraging curiosity and inclusivity.

Recently, students at Bishop Challoner School have engaged in dynamic sessions exploring German and French. German learners took on the challenge of Linguascope games and reading exercises, demonstrating their enthusiasm for mastering a new language. Meanwhile, French

students delved into the lyrics of the popular song “Sur Ma Route,” using translations to enhance their understanding. They also made use of Quizlet and Duolingo on iPads, blending digital tools with traditional learning methods to reinforce their skills in a fun and engaging way. Our programme thrives on creativity and inclusivity, ensuring students experience languages and cultures in an exciting, supportive environment. Sessions are designed to be “out of the box,” making learning fun while embracing cultural traditions.

Looking ahead, we will focus on Cantonese and Mandarin native speakers as they prepare for a GCSE listening exam. Past sessions have featured Bollywood film screenings, complemented by authentic Indian cuisine provided by parents— further enriching students’ cultural appreciation.

At Bishop Challoner, we believe that language learning is more than just an academic skill—it is a gateway to understanding the world. Through our Community Languages programme, students not only develop linguistic ability but also gain a deeper appreciation of global cultures, preparing them for a future where communication and cultural awareness are key.

A New Era for Independent Education in Beckenham

As St Christopher’s The Hall announces a new and exciting merger with St Dunstan’s Education Group, we speak Head, Tom Carter, about the school and exciting next chapter.

What makes St Christopher’s The Hall such a special and unique place?

St Christopher’s The Hall is a special place where every child can truly shine. It’s a school filled with encouragement, fun, and a real sense of belonging. We work hard to ensure that every child feels happy, supported, and ready to take on challenges with confidence. What makes St Christopher’s unique is how we celebrate each child for who they are. Differences are embraced, talents are discovered, and everyone feels free to be themselves.

Here, every day is an opportunity for children to

“What makes St Christopher’s unique is how we celebrate each child for who they are”

grow into curious, confident, and kind individuals. Whether they’re trying something new, working together, or simply enjoying the journey, we help them feel safe to believe in themselves, have fun learning, and feel ready for whatever comes next. It’s a place where anything feels possible, and that’s what makes it so special.

At St Christopher’s, we also believe in the power of working together with parents as partners in their child’s learning journey. We regularly invite parents to engage with the school community and take part in parent partnership events to give them a sense of our curriculum where they can experience first-hand how their children are learning. This collaboration strengthens the bond between home and school, ensuring that every child feels supported both in and out of the classroom.

By fostering this sense of partnership and celebrating every child’s individuality, St Christopher’s creates a nurturing environment where children can thrive and discover their full potential.

St Christopher’s recently announced it was joining St Dunstan’s Education Group, please can you tell us more about this and the benefits to the community?

St Christopher’s joining St Dunstan’s Education Group is such an exciting step for our school community. It’s not about needing to make a change—it’s about making a great school even better and planning for an even brighter future. Both schools share the same values and a commitment to putting children at the heart of everything we do, so this partnership feels like a natural fit. The benefits are huge. By working together, we’ll have access to more expertise, resources, and opportunities, which means an even richer experience for our pupils. This could include new extracurricular activities, enhanced support for every child, and even more investment in facilities and learning experiences. It’s not just about the here and now—it’s about making sure St Christopher’s stays strong and continues to thrive in a changing world. Both schools are in a great place, and teaming up like this means we can build on our strengths and offer even more to our children and families. However, the best part is it is all about helping every child here to grow, explore, and succeed. This partnership is full of exciting possibilities, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!

How does the school help children settle into reception and nursery in those early days?

At St Christopher’s Preschool and Reception, we go above and beyond to ensure every child feels safe, happy, and excited about starting their school journey. Those first days can feel like a big step, but our priority

“At St Christopher’s, settling into school is about more than just routines. It’s about creating a foundation of confidence, joy, and a lifelong love of learning that stays with them for years to come”

is to help each child settle in with care and confidence. In Preschool, we focus on nurturing each child as an individual. Our bright, welcoming classrooms are designed to spark curiosity and creativity, with play-based learning gently building the skills they’ll need as they grow. It’s all about helping children feel comfortable and confident while developing a love for learning. As one parent recently shared, “I just wanted to thank you for accepting our daughter into your Preschool. She is loving every minute of it and spends all weekend asking when it will be time for school again. She is clearly finding the environment so interesting and stimulating, and her vocabulary and knowledge seem to be exploding. It is so reassuring to see her so happy.”

When children join Reception, they immediately become an integral part of our Pre-Prep community. With two Reception classes of up to 22 children, each supported by a teacher and a teaching assistant, we ensure that every child gets the attention they need to thrive.

Our experienced Early Years team creates a warm, supportive environment where children can grow. Through a balance of child-led exploration and structured teaching, we help them develop key skills in Communication, Numeracy, Literacy, and Physical Development, all while fostering their natural curiosity and independence. From the very beginning, children enjoy specialist teaching in PE, Music, Drama, Art, and Modern Foreign Languages, opening doors to new skills and experiences.

At St Christopher’s, settling into school is about more than just routines. It’s about creating a foundation of confidence, joy, and a lifelong love of learning that stays with them for years to come.

The King’s School Canterbury & Junior King’s

An Exciting New Chapter

Long recognised as one of the world’s finest boarding schools, The King’s School Canterbury is expanding its provision to meet an increasing demand for day places. A fourth, new Day House is imminent, occupying a former public house adjacent to the historic school grounds. Blending period charm with modern amenities, the new House will join the existing three Day Houses in providing pupils with the same exceptional level of support and sense of belonging as their thirteen Boarding counterparts.

Day Houses mirror their Boarding equivalents in many ways, each offering vibrant social spaces and study areas. All Houses are led by Housemasters or Housemistresses and dedicated pastoral teams, ensuring that every pupil is well cared for and supported. The extended school day provides flexibility for further academic study and all the benefits of boarding, including access to extracurricular activities, sports, and time with friends, while giving day pupils the opportunity of returning home to their families in the evening.

“Day Houses mirror their Boarding equivalents in many ways, each offering vibrant social spaces and study areas”

Like a school within a school, Boarding and Day Houses enable pupils to be known, valued and nurtured, and they underpin a King’s education: the result is a school environment where children excel academically whilst also feeling supported as individuals.

Junior King’s is also adapting to meet the evolving needs of pupils and their families. Flexiboarding, introduced this year, allows children to stay at school for one to four nights a week. For parents who have demanding or irregular work schedules, or those living far from the School, this flexibility provides them with the option to choose overnight school stays based on their children’s own needs, preferences, and academic or extracurricular pursuits. It ensures that busy school schedules can be balanced with family commitments while giving pupils the opportunity to thrive in a supportive and dynamic environment, all while increasing academic focus and social interaction.

Spending just a few nights a week at Junior King’s gives pupils the chance to experience the camaraderie and community of boarding life while still spending quality time at home – an option particularly valued by parents of younger children. They can also take advantage of the School’s facilities—such as sports fields, libraries, and computer labs—outside of regular hours, giving them more opportunities to pursue their interests or hobbies.

To support the increase in day and flexiboarding provision, a new school bus network is also being launched this September, serving local areas and providing direct connections to both Junior King’s and the Senior School. The schools’ locations, within easy walking distance of rail routes, make them accessible for day pupils from local and surrounding areas and place them in easy reach of boarders from further afield.

As The King’s School Canterbury and Junior King’s both evolve and expand their day pupil and flexi-boarding offerings, they remain committed to providing an exceptional education in a nurturing environment; the ideal choice for families looking for a balanced, world-class and forward-thinking education in unmatched and inspiring surroundings.

To find out more, both schools are welcoming families to join them for Open Mornings in May. Further details are available at www. kings-school.co.uk

The Human Advantage in the Age of AI

At Hazelwood School, ensuring our pupils are equipped with the skills to navigate the fast-changing world they will enter at the end of their education journey, is critical. We’re inspired by the potential of artificial intelligence to revolutionize education, but we remain steadfast in our belief that human qualities lie at the heart of learning. AI is on everyone’s agenda but it is today’s children that need to full understand, embrace and learn to work alongside this technical revolution. AI can enhance how we teach, offering personalized tools and innovative experiences, but it cannot replace the unique human skills of empathy, creativity, and ethical reasoning.

As the world moves forward at an unprecedented pace, our responsibility as educators is not only

to prepare pupils to work alongside intelligent systems but also to help them retain their distinctively human edge. This means teaching children to think critically, communicate effectively, and approach challenges with compassion and courage—values that align with our school’s ethos. While AI can analyse data and process information, it is the human capacity for connection and ethical decision-making that will shape the future. At Hazelwood, we aim to empower our pupils to use AI responsibly, leveraging its capabilities while remaining grounded in the skills and values that make us truly human.

By embracing the opportunities AI provides and reinforcing the human advantage, we’re preparing our pupils not just to adapt but to lead in an everchanging world.

Hazelwood is an outstanding prep school in all areas, with a progressive approach to teaching and learning. We welcome parents visit us at one of our Open Mornings or book on to a private tour.

Unleashing Creativity The Thriving Art and Music Scene at Cobham Hall

Cobham Hall, a renowned independent school near Gravesend, is embarking on an exciting new chapter as it opens its doors to boys across all year groups. Founded over 60 years ago as a pioneering school for girls, Cobham Hall made history in 2023 by welcoming boys into its Sixth Form. The success of this milestone has now paved the way for full co-education, spanning from Year 7 to Year 13.

Cobham Hall has long been celebrated for nurturing creativity. Nowhere is this more evident than in its Art and Music departments, where students are encouraged to explore, express and excel in their artistic pursuits.

A Symphony of Passion:

Exyn’s

Musical Journey

For Year 12 student Exyn, music has been life changing. Originally from Guangzhou, China, she remembers seeing a piano for the first time at age five and being captivated. Though practice was initially a challenge, she soon discovered the emotional depth of music.

Now Cobham Halls first-ever Steinway Scholar, Exyn recently won the instrumental section of a prestigious competition. Her passionate performance left the audience astonished, and she will now compete in the District Final of the Rotary Club Young Musician Competition.

“Cobham

Hall has long been celebrated for nurturing creativity. Nowhere is this more evident than in its Art and Music departments.”

The Canvas of Dreams: Bond’s Artistic Evolution

For Art Scholar Bond (Year 12) from Thailand, art is more than a subject - it’s a way of life.

Inspired by animation, he explored 3D modelling before discovering a passion for oil painting.

Bond thrives in Cobham Hall’s spacious art studio, joking, “If I could place my bed in the art room, I might!”

One of his most significant pieces, an A2 oil painting, pushed him beyond his comfort zone, requiring over a month of effort. Another explored the theme of power, examining how clothing and uniforms shape identity and authority.

A Culture of Creativity

Cobham Hall fosters a non-exclusive community where students thrive, collaborate and inspire one another. With exceptional facilities and expert guidance, young artists and musicians refine their craft.

Whether through the melodies of a piano or the depth of an oil painting, students at Cobham Hall embrace creativity with confidence. With the belief that “there is more in you than you think”, the School continues to cultivate passionate and resilient artists and musicians.

“A strong international focus and a huge spirit of adventure.”

Girls Who Play Sport Become Women Who Lead

Throughout history, sport has been seen as a powerful avenue for personal growth, development and social change. While traditionally dominated by men, women and girls have increasingly embraced athletics, and the impact of their participation extends far beyond physical fitness. Research and real-life success stories illustrate a profound truth: girls who play sport often grow into women who lead. Statistics back up the connection between girls in sport and women in leadership. According to research from Ernst & Young and ESPNW, a significant percentage of women in executive leadership positions were once athletes. In fact, 94% of women in the C-suite (the highest executive level of a company) have a background in playing sport. This isn’t just a coincidence. The leadership qualities cultivated on the playing field— confidence, teamwork, discipline, communication, resilience—are precisely the ones needed in the boardroom.

Nationally, almost two-thirds of girls drop out of sport by their teens.  At Benenden School, participation in sport is encouraged, whether as part of a team or individually, and, as a result, the proportion of students who take part in some form of sport is particularly

high.  Ryan Garnsworthy, Director of Sport, says: “We actively strive to address the barriers to participation such as a fear of judgement, pressure to prioritise schoolwork over sport, and a lack of confidence in their ability or appearance by ensuring the sporting environment here is inclusive and non-judgemental.  We offer a wide range of sports at different times across a week in the hope that every student will find an activity they enjoy and time to take part”.

One of the most important qualities in any leader is confidence, and sport develops this trait. Winning and losing games, working towards personal bests and overcoming injuries foster resilience. A girl who has experienced the highs and lows of competition is more likely to have the emotional endurance required to lead a team or a business through difficult times.

Athletes are constantly setting goals and working towards them with discipline and dedication. They learn to break down larger goals into manageable steps, reinforcing the kind of strategic thinking that is essential in leadership roles.

As society continues to recognise the value of female leadership, encouraging girls to participate in sport is not just about fostering physical health—it’s about cultivating the next generation of women leaders.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated –as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

All Vitality Home Health staff are trained to the highest standard and are supported by an awardwinning office team of supervisors and trainers.

Vitality Home Health provides a service called Home to Decide. This service has been put in place as a result of people having no options if the hospital deems them unable to return home, effectively they require 24/7 care in a residential or nursing setting. This is a realistic option to see if they can effectively manage back at home, with a package of care underpinning a 4-week trial period.

They can discharge a customer home from hospital in a wheelchair assistance vehicle into the care and support of a carer who will reside alongside

the customer for the duration of the trial period, this carer will monitor all aspects of care. At the end of the 4 weeks, a review meeting is held, where all observations are discussed. The customer would voice their opinion on the service also.

If at the end of the meeting, the customer and family feel that a nursing or residential home is the preferred option, they will continue to care until a home is sourced or a decision is made to continue to care at home.

For the duration of the 4-week trial period, there is no contract in place. They work digitally using handheld devices to complete all notes and care plans. The family will have automatic access daily to these notes and can even message the office via the app.

The whole process is overseen by an office of highly experienced and qualified staff, who visit the home environment weekly to ensure all is going well.

How to Tell If Your Older Relative Needs More Help

Dnuring the colder months, staying warm, healthy, and social can become harder for many of us. Here is how to spot for signs that a loved one may need extra support:

Has their appearance changed?

If personal hygiene or grooming appears neglected, it may mean daily tasks are becoming difficult. Watch for signs including weight loss or small burns, which can suggest struggles with cooking.

What’s the house environment like?

An untidy and cluttered home can suggest housework is a challenge. Notice too if they’re using fewer areas of the house, perhaps due to fear of falling.

Are they taking their medication?

Look for signs like excess stock of medication or blister packs with missing doses, and consider encouraging a discussion with their GP or specialist.

What’s their social life like?

Ask about who they have spoken with recently. Reduced social contact might signal isolation.

Do they call more often?

An increase in the frequency of their calls could mean your loved one is feeling anxious, forgetful, or lonely.

“Realising that your older loved one is struggling by themselves can be difficult. However, the sooner help is in place, the better.”

Live-in Care vs Residential Care Which is Right for Your Loved One?

When choosing care for elderly relatives or those with specific health needs, families often face a tough decision: live-in care or residential care? Both provide essential support, but understanding their differences can help you make the best choice for your loved one’s well-being.

What is Live-in Care?

Live-in care involves a professional caregiver living with the person, offering assistance with daily tasks, personal care, medication management, and companionship. The individual remains in the comfort of their own home, surrounded by familiar surroundings. In contrast, residential care requires relocating to a care facility, where staff manage multiple residents, often leading to less personalized attention.

Benefits of Live-in Care

Familiar Environment: Staying at home helps reduce stress and anxiety, as most elderly people prefer the comfort of familiar surroundings.

Personalized Care: Live-in caregivers offer oneon-one attention, which ensures more tailored care compared to residential care, where staff often care for many people at once.

Better Quality of Life: Home-based care allows for more autonomy in daily routines, meals, and activities, contributing to improved emotional well-being.

Cost-Effectiveness: Live-in care can be more affordable than residential care, especially for individuals needing help with daily activities rather than complex medical care.

Continuity of Care: With live-in care, families benefit from a consistent caregiver, fostering strong relationships and stability, unlike the higher staff turnover in care homes.

How Radfield Home Care Can Help

They offer tailored, compassionate care to individuals wishing to remain at home, ensuring each person receives support that suits their specific needs. CASE STUDY

Oak Lodge Project

Our customer designed this entire project from scratch incorporating our Aspen Aqua Technics model. Originally this plot of land was pure grass on an unpleasant slope, however with the pool excavation being made up mainly of reinforced concrete and retaining walls this was able to be overcome. This beautiful outdoor scene is an overly inviting atmosphere with authentically pleasing features at every turn.  This project was fairy straight forward with a installation time for the pool of around 6 weeks.

Like all of our One-piece pools from Australia, this pool is finished using patented Pool ColourGuard® technology, which is the only

dual surface system with a clear layer protecting the colour. Backed by Limited Lifetime Interior Surface Guarantee, it’s like sunscreen for your pool, protecting it from colour loss and weathering. Incorporating a specialised dual coat system, as part of the manufacturing process, two layers are merged to provide extraordinary surface protection.

With a brilliant, high gloss finish that lasts year after year, the pool will maintain its beautiful appearance thanks to the innovative and unique Pool ColourGuard® technology.

This pool also has anti-microbial protection, this is made possible by the Microtech AntiMicrobial Pool Protection; it guards the pool’s surface against the growth of bacteria, making it exceptionally hygienic and safer for our customers and enhancing the swimming experience,

This one-piece pool’s flexural strength is being increased by 30% thanks to the incorporated graphene, full sized structural ribs, fully supported steps, bench seating and a wider edge beam resulting in the pool being independently structural and has no need for secondary engineering works.

We believe you can see, and read, how our pools offer unrivalled and bespoke qualities, giving us confidence that this pool will last forever and a day.

“XL Pools installed our pool summer 2022, after month of appointments with the team we finally agreed on our Aspen Aqua Technics Pool, the install, post fit and snagging made the whole process easy and stress free, The team we’re constantly contactable and any issues we’re resolved quickly and efficiently. The whole service has been amazing we’re so happy with the new space in our garden. It’s completely changed our home to a much more fun and social space. Would, and have recommend them to anyone who asked”

Sevenoaks

Farmhouse

After being approached to take on the challenge of an incredible farmhouse in Sevenoaks- Kent, Golden Feathers Interiors couldn’t wait to get started. The owners of this home knew it was time for their

“From one room transformations to full House renovations, Sophia’s designs along with the professional trades she teams with, have made many, happy homes”

previously cluttered, unpersonalised and bland space to be made truly their own, they longed for a home they could feel relaxed and comfortable in. Also a home thats well considered for their young growing family. This homes owners are very practical and do love to DIY, however they desperately needed guidance and designs to move ahead with.

Sophia set about the preparations in creating for them a totally new, fresh and bespoke ‘Family Harmony Design Scheme’. She truly understands that even in one home, all families have differences of opinions, likes and dislikes. There are colour palettes that individually we are drawn to (or NOT). What makes one person ‘happy and serene’ makes

another ‘irritated and restless’. It is really important that we all feel comfortable in our homes. Sophia specialises in the ability to differentiate design personalities, creating a scheme that suits the whole family overall.

After a few weeks of this very personal approach for her clients, a unique - overall home style was created, looking right in to the main elements for the home- Textures, Tones, Palette, Textiles and Core Materials to create that scheme, like flooring, hardware and also lighting, to name a few.

Her Clients were delighted with their new family scheme and so she was able to set about producing that scheme into individual room by room, bespoke designs.

All rooms in the house have now been completed with a team effort of the home owners and supplied trade through Golden Feathers Interiors. Shown here is some of the favourite rooms in the house.

The designs have been carefully considered to remain respectful to this beautiful farmhouse and also provide her clients a modern contemporary, yet luxurious and homely feel.

The storage room has been totally transformed into a family snug, featuring a bespoke full storage wall with a secret library door, that leads into the

private home study! - a projector wall, home bar and maximalist texture with bespoke upholstery, wallpaper, a dark palette of decoration and cosy velvet furniture.

The Kitchen is a three zone area. Keeping with the original base units, it has been otherwise a complete renovation, all new painted finishes and hardware. There is a totally bespoke design, build and fit of an upholstered Island/dining space, creating storage and new outlooks. There has been a home Cafe- Barista area with a newly rendered open fire and further entertaining areas created.

The Master Bedroom is an amazing triumph, this previous cold, tired and grey space is now totally all encompassing. The design was created to embrace an opulent, reassuring and restful suite. With a warming palette, the panelling wrap and stunning mural with layered luxurious furniture- has made this room and ensuite are unrecognisable. There is also an important statement made in this bedroom by including multiple, benefits from house plants and trees.

As with all our bespoke cabinetry, your island is handmade to your exact requirements, creating the perfect centrepiece for your kitchen.

Pantry cupboards – 37%

Butlers’ pantries and kitchen larder cupboards are enduringly popular, and fast becoming a kitchen staple.

SHOP VINTAGE

Second-Hand Homeware Launches Online

Some of a Kind has just launched a website selling affordable secondhand and vintage homeware - www. someofakind.co.uk. They have an eclectic selection of products, including quirky candlesticks, vintage espresso sets and secondhand vases.

According to research, UK consumers are wanting to buy more second-hand homeware and shop more sustainably. 71% of consumers bought or sold used goods in 2023, with homeware proving to be the second highest category purchased behind fashion [1]. The top 2 reasons for buying second-hand items in the UK were cited as being for environmental reasons, followed by the cost of living crisis [2].

However, finding the time to shop second-hand homeware can prove difficult, as it often involves going to car boot sales, charity shops or buying off Facebook Marketplace, all of which are very time intensive to actually find something you would want in your home.

Some of a Kind have done the hard work for you, sourcing second-hand products which are in great condition, as well as being stylish and affordable.

Everything on the website is hand-picked by the owner, Charlie Ashby, who says;

“As someone who has always wanted to launch their own business, I’m excited to introduce Some of a Kind.

We are all about helping people create unique, character filled homes without compromising the

planet. I know I’m not the only one that loves having a mooch round a charity shop or car boot sale but it’s a lot of effort for sometimes very little reward.

I wanted to give people a place where they can make good choices in an easier way, whilst still being affordable.”

You can find Some of a Kind online - www. someofakind.co.uk, with products starting from £4.95, and new products dropping every month. You can also sign up to their newsletter via their website to be the first to hear about new products.

Trend: Castlecore

For thousands of years of human history, we have seen castles as symbols of status, protection, power and most importantly (in our eyes anyway) gorgeous renderings of architectural design. The reason so many stand around the world to this day, surrounded by other modern masterpieces of construction is that they will always inspire marvel and stir curiosity. So why did we stop building

them? That we can’t answer, but what we can do is help you style your space using some mid (13th) century majesty. So for dining tables fit for royalty and lighting that would even bring illumination to the dark ages, stick around and explore with us our latest trend, Castlecore.

DOOM & GLOOM:

Creating an ambience isn’t just reliant on furniture, but the entire mood of the room. Surrounding yourself with tones that are tantalisingly downbeat often provides a subtle, yet moody, backdrop to highlight the bold and grand nature of castle life. Adorning the walls with a rich red or an overgrown green is one of the best ways to put your favourite pieces front and centre.

THE ROUND TABLE:

A seat at the table has rarely symbolically meant more than in the stories of castle courts. In this trend, large dining tables are characterised by large amounts of space for your nearest and dearest and often contain dark and distinguished wooden elements that make it a strong statement of robust interiors. Curved edges encompass the togetherness that harsh edges do not.

“Creating an ambience isn’t just reliant on furniture, but the entire mood of the room”

PERSONAL CHAMBERS:

Bedrooms. In today’s time they contain a myriad of mod-cons, but in the middle-ages they were usually focused around one thing: their namesake. The throne wasn’t the only important individual piece of furniture in a castle; a place to sleep and rest has been the cornerstone of a quintessential home since the human story began. So the exuberance of a four-poster bed, a room within a room, is the ideal way to go from bedroom to bed chamber.

A LIGHT IN THE DARK:

When we think of castles, our minds are cast to ceilings as high as the eye can see. But with tall rooms come the inevitable - tall lighting. Chandeliers have been a staple of castles since we had a word for ‘fire hazard.’ In 2025 they’re still a seriously stylish way of illuminating your space, albeit with candlelight replaced by something with a bit more longevity. However, the lack of flickering flames doesn’t mean that we need to

“A place to sleep and rest has been the cornerstone of a quintessential home since the human story began”

forgo the style that was so widely celebrated for so long. A modern day masterpiece is the pinnacle of Castlecore.

CABINET OF WONDERS:

Storage, at times, is arguably the least interesting element of interiors. It is a space merely to hold other things we cherish and prize. However, placed in the right location and paired with the correct surroundings, it takes on an entire new lease of life. Displaying your favourite objects whilst seamlessly and stylishly blending with a grandiose backdrop ironically makes a large cabinet a subtle Castlecore detail. chaplins.co.uk

CHOICE, QUALITY & DESIGN

Want to enhance your bathroom space but finding the compact area hard to work with? Fear not, as there are plenty of ways to utilise smaller bathrooms, including everything you need to make the room appear larger.

Taking advantage of things like natural light, corners and clever storage is important and will help your compact bathroom to feel less restricted. There are ways to make the small space feel bigger without having to spend a fortune on knocking down your wall to fit a new window.

One of these is to create an illusion of space, install mirrors onto your bathroom wall, as this will reflect light well creating the effect of an open window. In addition to this if you are looking to open up the space in your bathroom, go for a mirror that is back lit, at the same time helping to create a minimalistic vibe in your bathroom.

One of the reasons why small bathrooms can feel even smaller is the lack of storage. If you own a wide array of bathroom essentials (such as skincare products, hair products and oral products), consider investing in a shelf to hold all your soaps and bottles. While it might be the obvious choice to go with shower curtains, sometimes traditional isn’t always better. To make your bathroom space feel more open, consider forgoing the curtains and choose a clear glass screen to separate your shower area from the rest.

Instead of separating tile patterns for your bathroom floor and your shower, use a consistent tile type to tile your floor, as having unbroken patterns creates a greater perception of depth, making your bathroom feel more spacious.

Your bathroom is a precious and private space, and chances are, you are going to spend a significant amount of time in it, so why not invest in building it up to look exactly the way you want it? You don’t need a mansion to make a masterpiece, and we hope that our tips have guided you in working with whatever limited space you have, to create the stylish space you always wanted.

If you are looking for more inspiration to create that tranquil bathroom space, you’ll find plenty of superb design ideas for small bathrooms (and even large ones) at our Eltham and Biggin Hill showrooms.
