Winter market buoyancy defies expectations at Royal Connaught Park

A

ny expectations of winter doldrums in the property market have been dashed in the aftermath of December’s election, as scores of interested purchasers have visited the newly-available homes at Grade II listed, Royal Connaught Park in Bushey. The electoral strength of the new government and confidence that it will serve a full term has impacted directly on sales. Purchasers range from younger ‘professional’ families to older retired downsizers as well as those seeking a second home. Many buyers are seeking secure properties that can be ‘locked up and left’, giving them the flexibility to live wherever their work takes them.

“Living at Royal Connaught Park feels as it would if you were enjoying your own private manor house or Oxbridge College” Fear of missing out (FOMO) seems to be a factor too; no surprise given the site’s extensive transformation into one of Hertfordshire’s premier addresses, from firstly the former Royal Masonic School for Boys, and then the international American University, which brought it many international friends. The work by Comer Homes develops more newly-built homes for buyers in the residential parkland community with its dignified and historic atmosphere. Continued sales success means that the exciting Nova Collection of homes includes Yale and Harvard Houses. This collection of apartments, starting with one-bedroom homes with large terraces from £500,000 and extending up to four-bedroom duplex apartments at £1.2m with balconies and roof-top terraces and delightful views over the parkland, gives a great choice of price and space with a fresh, contemporary take on lifestyle. Living at Royal Connaught Park feels as it would 26 FEBRUARY 2020

if you were enjoying your own private manor house or Oxbridge College. You can sense the reassurance of a gated development with 24-hour security personnel, CCTV and video entry systems, while all the homes benefit from a range of wellappointed amenities neatly integrated into the refurbished buildings; there is a private gym, sauna, swimming pool, and tennis courts. A privatelychauffered courtesy coach provides nearly instant access to and from local railway stations and to shopping centres such as the billion-poundrefurbished Intu Watford. All the apartments in the Nova Collection have terraces or balconies and of course you can roam within 100 acres of private parkland too. So, your active, outdoor lifestyle is assured both on site and nearby with facilities such as The Grove renowned for its Championship golf course and luxurious spa. Both Yale and Harvard House, as well as properties to be released later in the Spring, benefit from direct lift access down to Royal Connaught Park’s extensive underground car park. The lift surfaces directly into the buildings’ communal areas almost straight outside individual apartments, providing maximum convenience with no damp shopping on wet days. The interior layout and specification of apartments simply makes no compromise on style, technology and high-quality floor and tile finishes. Attention to detail is obvious, from underfloor heating to bathroom fittings and kitchen choice. As well as the newly-built homes in the Nova Collection, there are also just two properties still available for sale in the refurbished, ‘recreated’ historic buildings; one town house and a threebedroom gallery apartment. The site is a wonderful ‘green lung’ in Bushey, yet is well-located, reaching Central London (fast to Euston station) in just 18 mins, and with the thriving centres of Bushey, Radlett and St Albans nearby. Quick and easy road links close by include the M25, M1 and M40 and Heathrow and Luton airports are easily accessible.

oday, just fourteen vast corporations control the majority of car brands on our roads. But turn back the pages to cars of yesteryear and a very different picture emerges, one that is on show in all its glory at Historics classic car auction at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, 7th March. The classic car auction specialist is offering for sale some 180 widely varying models spanning nearly a century, and accounting for well over 40 different marques from the UK, Europe, the USA and beyond. They reflect a wide spectrum of values, from extremely affordable to high-value exceptional collector cars, and everything in-between. This auction is a true reflection of the incredibly diverse, fascinating and vibrant classic car market and being there is highly recommended. The number of classic cars on our roads continues to grow. Three years ago, The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs estimated there were some 500,000 UK-registered classic cars (i.e. pre 1985), and that number has increased, bolstered too by climbing interest in so-called ‘modern classics’, catering for cars from the 80’s, 90’s up to 2010. This Historics’ auction embraces them all. Alongside a fine selection of British classics from the likes of Aston Martin, Austin Healey, Bentley, Jaguar, MG and Rolls-Royce – and not forgetting the ubiquitous Mini - is a similarly evocative array of international marques from makers including Alfa Romeo, BMW, Fiat, Lancia and Mercedes-Benz, all the way to European exotica from the ‘pillars of performance’ including Facel Vega, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche. Firm favourites at Historics regular classic car auctions are so called ‘barn finds’ - including cars that for one reason or another have remained

untouched, frequently for many decades and are ripe for restoration. A number of such cars come to sale at Ascot, some enticingly offered without reserve - which means they will sell to the highest bidder, however low that may be. One, an utterly unique 1947 Rolls-Royce, was owned by the eccentric Nubar Gulbenkian, reported to be one of the richest men in the world. Designed to his brief and built by the noble coachbuiders Hoopers, the car has since been extensively restored and now needs completion after a reputed £200,000 has been spent on it…Truly a piece of important British motoring history. So too is the popular MGB and its coupe variant the MGB GT…A beautifully-presented 1967 example of the latter comes to sale at the Ascot auction, again at No Reserve, delivering a very practical and affordable entry to the classic market At the other end of the spectrum, a supremely elegant and simply immaculate 1969 Lamborghini Islero – just one of five righthand drive models ever built - sets the tone of classic Italian sports cars, and more besides. An immensely valuable car in its own right, this example was driven by Sir Roger Moore and featured extensively in the 1969 film ‘ The Man who Haunted Himself ’. The actor signed the sun visor after the film, which can clearly be seen to this day on the car. Significantly – and specially valuable to firsttimers to the classic car world - there are three preview days to the auction, on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before, when everyone is encouraged to have a thoroughly good and close look at all 180 consignments, with Historics’ highly qualified staff on hand to talk in detail about each car on sale. Will your estate be protected in the future?

Perhaps you think you know everything that is required to draft a will, or the benefits of creating a trust; but with contentious probate on the rise, why not test your knowledge with B P Collins’ multiple-choice questions to see if you need more expert advice. 1. By 2020/21, families with two parents may have tax free allowances, including the ordinary nil rate band and residence nil rate band (RNRB) of up to: a) £650k b) £750k c) £900k d) £1 million 2. The main advantage of having a trust within a will is the flexibility it affords to the trustees to review the position at the date of death. When is a trust advisable? a) For care fees planning, if the nil rate band passes to a trust from which the surviving spouse can benefit, then neither the income nor the capital of the trust will be considered by the local authority b) To provide protection against insolvency or divorce of intended beneficiaries c) If there is a chance that the surviving spouse will remarry, or you have children from a previous relationship d) To reduce the estate of the surviving spouse to below £2 million to qualify for the RNRB 3. You must have all the following to create a will except…? a) Intention to make a will b) Testamentary capacity c) Signed and witnessed by two people who are not beneficiaries d) Spoken aloud to a judge 4. A will should be changed after all the following except? a) Divorce b) Marriage c) Illness d) Birth or adoption of a child 5. When is an online probate application suitable?

a) Where there is more than one executor applying for probate b) Where there is a foreign element c) When there is a beneficiary dispute d) Where there are multiple assets 6. What is the most popular reason for contesting a will in the UK? a) Undue influence (unreasonable pressure) applied to the deceased to make and sign the will b) The mental and legal ability of the deceased to make or alter their will is disputed c) Claim there was a clerical error in the drafting of the will d) Claim that the person drafting the will failed to reflect the intentions of the deceased 7.What is the most difficult to prove when contesting a will in the UK? a) Undue influence (unreasonable pressure) applied to the deceased to make and sign the will b) The mental and legal ability of the deceased to make or alter their will is disputed c) Claim there was a clerical error in the drafting of the will d) Claim that the person drafting the will failed to reflect the intentions of the deceased 8.The time limit for a claim against an estate is: a) 3 months b) 6 months c) 2 years d) 5 years 9.The time limit for issuing a claim against an estate from the date of the Grant of Representation, under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act is: a) 3 months b) 6 months c) 2 years d) 5 years

With the law changing frequently and contentious probate on the rise, B P Collins is committed to helping you minimise the risk of a claim against your estate, by providing up to date and tailored advice. ‘Posh Pawn’ comes to Berkhamsted and Gerrards Cross

L

ong established jewellers Abbey Fine Jewellery and Percy Davies have introduced a state of the art pawnbroking loan product to add to the range of services on offer in their high street stores. Customers at the stores in Berkhamsted and Gerrards Cross will now be able to secure a loan against their jewellery or other valuables. Both outlets are part of the Cotswold Fine Jewellery Group, a family run business based in Gloucestershire. ‘We have always advertised to buy jewellery and all precious metals, so it is a fairly easy progression for us to offer a pawnbroking loan service,’ explained Cotswold Fine Jewellery Group MD, Miles Mann. The new service will be web based with customers making a simple online application and exchanging documentation on a digital platform. Once the valuable items have been assessed and a loan amount agreed, signatures are captured online and the funds are transferred directly into a client’s bank account. ‘We are inviting customers to call us initially to discuss their valuation or pop into the stores where we can make an assessment. We have a wealth of experience at our disposal when it comes to valuing jewellery and will normally be able to make a loan appraisal within a few minutes.’ The Cotswold Fine Jewellery Group can trace its roots in the trade back to 1741 when Miles’ ancestor William Mann started retailing from premises on the historic cross in the heart of Gloucester. The group now runs stores in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Bath and Bourton-on-the-Water. Abbey Fine Jewellery in Berkhamsted and Percy Davies in Gerrards Cross were added to the group in 2016 and 2018 respectively. ‘In order to survive and thrive as a high street retailer it is essential to continually adapt and

34 FEBRUARY 2020

improve the services and the experience we offer to the public. We see the introduction of this service as something new which sits well with our current offering. Customers now have the choice to sell their jewellery or to take out a loan if they need to raise funds but don’t want to let go of something that has sentimental value.’ In April this year new banking rules are being introduced to prevent banks from charging punitive fees for overdraft services. The Banks have responded by greatly increasing the interest rates they will charge for their overdrafts. ‘We are anticipating a significant demand for our new service particularly in the light of the recent changes in bank overdraft rates’ explained Miles. ‘We offer a quick, simple and transparent alternative to bank borrowing which can be very slow to set up and will be much more expensive after April.’ Posh Pawn, as seen on TV, has significantly raised the profile of the pawnbroking industry. Clients are featured raising significant sums against high end jewellery and watches, luxury designer branded products, works of art, classic cars and an array of other valuable items. Abbey Fine Jewellery and Percy Davies will also consider any of the above as security for a loan. ‘Our expertise is obviously in the jewellery market’, explains Miles, ‘but we have established links with a number of expert valuers in other fields including fine art, classic cars and antique furniture. We will be able to appraise any item of value, large or small with a view to making a loan.’ To talk to someone about your valuables whether you are thinking of securing a loan or selling, call Abbey Fine Jewellery on 01442 877677 or Percy Davies on 01753 883507.

Amulet

comes to

Amersham

J

ust before the Christmas rush this December, Amersham saw a new addition to Sycamore Road, in the form of Amulet, the independent jeweller. Bucking the downward trend in some high streets across the country, this company has found that jewellery is definitely something ‘touchy feely’, which is best seen close up and tried on before making a purchase. Small designers with an individual style, gives this shop a range of products not to be found in the major outlets. The director Liz Barroeta is constantly on the lookout for new collections. The shop has been greeted with enthusiasm by many shoppers, as a welcome alternative to another coffee house, chain or charity shop. Since opening two decades ago, Amulet remains an on-going popular independent jewellery retailer in the unique town of Berkhamsted. Today an established business, Amulet has somewhat come along way; it’s extensive customer base reaches worldwide, thanks to the edgy ecommerce website www.amuletfinejewellery.com. The opportunity was too good to miss, when the chance arose to expand with a new branch in Amersham; perfectly placed on the main ‘drag’ of Sycamore Road, opposite Waitrose. Offering an extensive and eclectic range of products, Amulet is quite the treasure trove. Liz sources a wide variety of silver and gold jewellery

36 FEBRUARY 2020

from around the world. With jewellery being a form of art, Liz has sought out to find jewellery that is skillfully crafted and designed by artists, inspired by their local surroundings which, range as nearby as Suffolk, Scotland or Scandinavia, whilst stretching as far as Israel and Mexico - For example, designers such as Alex Monroe, Sheila Fleet, Chris Lewis, and Dganit Hen to name a few. Even closer to home, Buckinghamshire jeweller Kimberley Selwood creates designs for Jersey Pearl, whilst the sporty brand Boing, produce their bracelets made from mountaineering rope in Maidenhead. Chris Lewis from Dundee shows exceptional inspiration from nature using sterling silver in a variety of shapes and textures, whilst jewellery from Sheila Fleet from the Orkney Islands displays the beautiful colours from nature through hand-painted glass enamel. Additionally, an Israeli designer named Dganit Hen focusses on an array of tones and colours through using mixtures of precious metals after growing up around the scenic views of Upper Galilee. Alex Monroe can be described as jewellery with a very British sense of style. Whilst being intricate and quirky, Alex has attracted the attention of the media, and is currently worn by Karen (Hermione Norris) in the latest series of Cold Feet. Here at Amulet, you can be sure of a warm, friendly welcome. We recognise that everyone has their own style, and we enthusiastically try our best to achieve the look you are after‚ regardless of your budget. We aim to find jewellery that you can relish wearing and cherish forever - Why not pop in and see us? www.amuletfinejewellery.com

Art of the Wild: Gertrude Hermes and the Natural World 7 February – 4 May 2020

‘W

On display will be 40 wood engravings, woodblocks, linoprints and original drawings, including sketchbooks, which show the creative evolution of Hermes’ work, from preliminary sketch and carved woodblock through to the final print. By exploring the work of one of the most important, but little-known, British female artists of the 20th century, this exhibition will uncover the roots of Hermes’ fertile creative imagination and introduce her exceptional work to a new

audience. The Museum will bring her work to life with a selection of adult events and talks, such as ‘Gertrude Hermes: Black and White Boutis’, expanding on the techniques she used and highlighting influences on her work. This exhibition has been Organised by the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford.

Delicious dining at Origins

I

n 2009, 150 years after the original coaching inn opened in Great Missenden High Street, the business was purchased by local man Paul Fullagar. Paul’s vision was to bring the White Lion back to its former glory. 10 years on from that, following a successful decade with “Origins at the White Lion”, and enjoying acclaimed status including ‘Diners Choice Award’ for 2018 & 2019 and TripAdvisors ‘Certificate of Excellence 2019’ Paul, with his wife Amina, Italian Head Chef, Gennaro Grella and general manager James Demagalski, have refurbished and reopened. The team are proud to offer a new menu of contemporary and classic Italian food created by Gennaro. On what has become known as “the saddest day of the year” we dined in Origins. The décor in the bar area is welcoming and refreshing, with the restaurant area enjoying clever lighting and stylish furnishings. The waiting staff were all very cheery, friendly, efficient and welcoming, and the menu choices were shatteringly good with fresh, inspirational options to pick from. We took advice from Amina and plumped for a couple of dishes to share for starter, the black pepper calamari

fritti with black garlic alioli and the flat bread, homemade, hand stretched dough, topped with your choice of tomato, red onion, halloumi, olives and avocado – what’s not to love about these ingredients? For mains, the tantalising description of each dish made decisions even more difficult. We plumped for the Beef Tagliata, an aged 8oz sirloin steak, honey mustard, rocket & parmesan shavings & balsamic dressing with triple cooked chips and wilted spinach, as well as the Peroni battered halibut served with triple cooked chips, minted mushy fava beans & black garlic alioli. Both meals exceeded expectations, and were absolutely scrumptious. Having had our fill on the starters and mains, we opted to share a dessert and went for the Salted Caramel Budino, a traditional butterscotch creamy custard dessert on a chocolate chip cookie base, topped with salted caramel sauce. It didn’t fail to impress – to the point where we actually wished we had opted for one each! Amina was telling me that their staff are all trained to advise and recommend not only on the food, but on wines to best accompany the different dishes too. I love that service, it’s important to get the right combination in my book. Overall, dining at Origins was a wonderful experience, we will return without a doubt. info@originswinebar.co.uk, 01494 863696. 57, High Street, Great Missenden, Bucks, HP16 0AL

Polo Singles “A great way to meet passionate, entrepreneurial and inspiring people on a personal and professional level”

• Who would you say Polo Singles is the right platform for? Polo Singles is the world’s only online dating service dedicated to the polo lifestyle, and we believe we satisfy three different requirements: Firstly, if you just love watching polo for the truly superb horses and want to meet up with a group of people to watch a match from the social side, we are the site for you. Secondly, if you would like to date someone who understands the passion for a sport (and all that goes with it!) or you are looking to expand your knowledge and network within polo, then Polo Singles is the right platform for you. Finally, if you would like to know that some of your membership goes back towards supporting pony welfare and re-training, and in assisting the brave servicemen and women of every country who keep us all safe in their recovery from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder then look no further. • What inspired Polo Singles? Polo is such a sociable lifestyle; it is a great way to meet passionate, entrepreneurial and inspiring people on a personal and professional level. The long term goal of Polo Singles is to set up our charity, Special Forces Horses. The combination of wanting to give back to horses and people prompted us all to look at starting the website in order to fund our charity which aims to help veterans cope with Combat PTSD through contact with horses. Horses have a long-proven track record as therapy animals and equine facilitated learning: We aim to help both horses and people with Special Forces Horses, supported by the fun medium of online dating.

46 FEBRUARY 2020

As 55 million people around the world watch and support polo so there is plenty of opportunity for members of Polo Singles to expand their social circles! • What makes your lifestyle dating membership stand out from other dating companies? As Polo Singles has been set up as a means to support our charity, Special Forces Horses, we believe we are truly unique. As one of our new members, Mike, says, “I think this is a brilliant niche idea as I am a polo addict and we all love to date! The charity angle you do also resonates with me strongly. I also expect that it will do so very strongly with all members of the polo community. Their love of their ponies makes them more likely in my view to be altruistic for the right causes than say the average person in the population.” • What is your philosophy? Giving back whenever you can is a win-win for all, and when you can bring smiles and fun along the way, what’s not to love?! As Horses have a very proven track record as therapy animals, (for example, Riding for the Disabled and its royal patronage) we aim to help the rehabilitation and recovery of both horses and people with Special Forces Horses, through the fun medium of online dating. In this way, you are actually getting something back for yourself at the same time as giving to charity! We envision Polo Singles as an opportunity for celebrating life, laughter, friendship and love whilst helping to create a legacy through Special Forces Horses. www.polosingles.com

The reasons why your son or daughter might need a

Graduate Coach “Graduate coaching will help your son or daughter to discover their career path and provide them with lifelong skills”

I

n the words of Bill Gates: “Everyone needs a coach. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a singer, a tennis player, a dancer or a graduate”. You are familiar with the concept of hiring an academic tutor or a sports instructor to help your son or daughter to excel in a specific area, but have you ever considered getting them a graduate coach to get them on the right career ladder? Throughout your career, you have probably received some career coaching or mentoring that helped you to make informed decisions and map out your career trajectory. Likewise, graduate coaching will help your son or daughter to discover their career path and provide them with lifelong skills to thrive throughout their career. Here are 5 reasons why your son or daughter might need a graduate coach: • There are too many graduates chasing too few jobs. The current supply of graduates looking for jobs is comprised of 800,000 graduates from 2019, 1,200,000 graduates from 2016-18 (who are still searching) and 300,000 international students. • Academic success is no longer a differentiator to employers who are looking for the most experienced and workplace-ready graduates. • Universities see it as their principal task to ensure that students get a degree, and place more emphasis on academics rather than each student’s career. • 90% of graduates studied non-vocational degrees, and thus find it difficult to work out what type of career would suit them best. • The content and delivery of university degree

courses have remained largely unchanged over the last 100 years, despite the radical changes in the graduate job market, such as 70% of employers seeking graduates with digital skills. Graduate Coach is the UK’s leading graduate career coaching company. Over the past 10 years, the founder of Graduate Coach, Chris Davies has helped 500+ students and graduates to land their dream job. Graduate Coach’s flagship service is their sixstage, one-to-one coaching programme. Candidates gain: • The right graduate job, not just any job. Guaranteed. • Life-long career skills and a network of contacts. • Continued career mentoring after they land a job. Get to grips with your pensions Now could be the perfect time to do the pension admin tasks you have been putting off

T

he new year is a chance to refresh and make plans to improve your retirement prospects. Here are six suggestions to get you started.

1. Track down any lost pensions If you have moved jobs frequently, or your address has changed, you may have pensions that you have lost track of. Research suggests there are around 1.6 million unclaimed pots worth £19.4 billion – the equivalent of nearly £13,000 per pot.1 If you’re trying to track down a lost workplace pension, you could try contacting the company you used to work for. However, you may find that your old employer doesn’t exist anymore, or you’re trying to trace an old personal pension and you don’t have any contact details. In this case, you can get help from the government-backed Pension Tracing Service, either online or by calling 0800 731 0193. 2. Consider consolidating If you have several pension pots, it may be a good idea to combine them into one pot. This could: • Help you to avoid dealing with multiple providers. • Make it easier to keep track of your overall savings and estimated income at retirement. • Open up a greater choice of investments. • Make it easier to diversify and switch your investments. Bear in mind that some pensions have high exit fees, or include guaranteed annuity rates which may be lost, so it’s important to understand the risks of transferring out of your scheme before proceeding. This is where professional financial advice will really help. 3. Check your State Pension It’s very hard to plan your retirement without a full view of your State Pension. It’s therefore a good idea to check how much State Pension you

could get and when you could get it. You can do this online at www.gov.uk/check-state-pension. You will also be able to see your National Insurance record, and whether you can improve it. You might be able to fill gaps by claiming National Insurance credits, or making voluntary National Insurance contributions. 4. See if you can pay in more Pension policy is an area that has been neglected since the Brexit referendum result, so it’s possible the government will announce a review of pension taxation in the Budget on 11 March. Therefore, if you’ve still got a few years to go before retirement, think about boosting your personal pension now, so that you can benefit from current rates of tax relief and potentially enjoy a higher income when you stop work. If you have surplus cash that is not earmarked for other purposes and you haven’t used all your 2019/20 pension allowances, making a one-off pension contribution can be a smart way to get nearer that retirement goal. 5. Check your investments Ensuring that your retirement fund is appropriately invested and sufficiently diversified is crucial. Therefore, asset allocation should be reviewed regularly to ensure it still reflects your attitude to risk. Portfolios have a tendency to deviate from the initial weightings over time. For example, more volatile assets can perform better over the longer term and therefore make up an increasing proportion of the overall portfolio. This can make your portfolio unbalanced and riskier than initially intended. A financial adviser can rebalance your investment portfolio and get your target asset allocation back on track. They can also help to ensure your financial plan remains appropriate and is on course to achieve its goals. 6. Nominate beneficiaries Most pension schemes allow anyone to inherit your pension savings – they don’t have to be your spouse or civil partner. There’s no limit to the number of people you can nominate. Passing on pensions is done through completion of an ‘expression of wish’ form. This tells the trustees of the pension scheme to whom they should pay death benefits. It’s important to keep this updated, ideally at least annually, but also when either your own circumstances or those of your proposed beneficiaries change. The new year could be an ideal time to get this form updated.

BENHAMS WELL, FAWLEY

O

riginally, this house was a pair of 17th century brick and flint cottages that sat side-by-side until they were joined together around 100 years ago. It has recently been renovated and extended, making it into a very comfortable and beautiful family home. The house is bursting with character. It has a friendly and intriguing layout, there is some clever use of space and many of the cottages’ original features such as brick and flint walls and timber beams have been incorporated into the design. Most of the renovations and refurbishments were done by the previous owner, who is an architect. The current owner of the property, Ali Gill, loves the layout of the house and its interesting design features: “I think it’s a really unusual and brilliant use of new and old,” she said. “The thing I like most about it is that it’s really light and airy, and yet it’s really cosy. It’s lovely in the summer because you can have all the doors and windows open and it’s like living outside, with the windows in the kitchen and the big windows in the bedroom and the living area. “But in the winter, because it’s got underfloor heating and snug rooms around the fire, you feel like you’re in this really snug little cottage. I really like that about it.” The ground floor has a fabulously light entrance

The kitchen / breakfast room / dining area is slightly below ground level – it is believed this this part of the house was where the cottage dwellers kept their animals in the olden days – and the wooden steps down here double up as storage cupboards. The kitchen area has some lovely big windows and a tall vaulted ceiling, modern shiny kitchen units, granite work surfaces and a stone floor. There is also a utility room, a study and a cloakroom. Upstairs on the first floor there are four bedrooms and a family bathroom with a jacuzzi bath and shower. The master bedroom has a fabulous full-height window overlooking the garden, a vaulted ceiling and an en suite shower room. There is an ancient well in the back garden – nowadays this makes an interesting feature, but at one time it was the main water supply for the cottages. “The rainwater from both the cottages was piped into an underground tank, which was accessed from the well. It still has water in it but we have it covered over now because it’s safer,” said Ms Gill. The property also has a gym in the back garden and a cellar under the house that is fitted with wine racks. Nestled within 165 acres of woodland and green spaces just outside of Midhurst, the development is dedicated to walkers, cyclists, dog walkers, children and wildlife, providing an opportunity to exercise in a calm and relaxing space which is known for relieving high blood pressure, obesity, stress and depression. Residents can also relish mornings with the papers in the Arts & Crafts main building’s sumptuous reading room or dining hall or retire for a blissful afternoon with a good book to the iconic formal gardens, originally laid out by influential 19th century garden designer, Gertrude Jekyll. The original gardens were crucial in the rehabilitation 64 FEBRUARY 2020

of patients recovering in the hospital due to Jekyll’s beliefs in the healing power of plants. Having been beautifully reinstated by City & Country, along with three miles of ‘measured walks’ which were originally designed for patients to help boost immune systems, reduce anxiety and improve sleep, residents can also benefit amongst the fresh air and natural surroundings. For those feeling active, the Estate also boasts a gym offering workout and resistance equipment, and a spa style swimming pool complete with sauna and steam room. A tennis court will also be built in the near future. Residents can also continue their ‘health and wellbeing’ journey when not at home. The Estate is located on the doorstep of the South Downs National Park which offers miles of beautiful, undulating West Sussex countryside. The relaxed, rural character and vibrant community spirit of Midhurst itself earnt its recognition as one of the best places to live in the UK, whilst local wellbeing facilities include Cowdray Park (which hosted the largest yoga gathering last year), Petworth Park, tennis, badminton, pilates, yoga and health food shops. Previously the site of a tuberculosis sanatorium founded by King Edward VII in 1906, Metis Homes has built nineteen three and five bedroomed homes which combine contemporary luxury with period charm, all named after classic Royal British names. Each home benefits from unusually large bedrooms, French windows which open into a private landscaped garden, whilst most also boast a studio above the double garage -an ideal space for a fitness room perhaps. 50 YEARS OF TRAMP

London’s most iconic private members club, TRAMP is celebrating 50 years at the pinnacle of the nightlife industry

66 FEBRUARY 2020

O

pened in December 1969, the Jermyn Street club has welcomed a who’s who of A-list celebrities through its unassuming doors and into the 300-capacity basement of bacchanalia, below. Original members included Sir Mick Jagger, Sir Roger Moore, Sir Michael Caine and sisters Joan and Jackie Collins, but the club quickly became a magnet for movie stars, musicians and even royalty, and before long, Tramp became a byword for sophisticated debauchery. During the 1970s it wasn’t uncommon to see George Best on the dance floor while Sir Matt Busby frantically called the club’s front desk, trying to locate his absent star player; Marlon Brando holding court in the restaurant over a glass of scotch and Amaretto; and Frank Sinatra relaxing on his favourite seat in the lounge area, where guests would fall over themselves at the sight of Ol’ Blue Eyes as they emerged from the adjacent women’s toilets. Sir Rod Stewart once said of the club: “I remember coming out of Tramp when I used to play Sunday morning football and I’d get home at about four or five in the morning and I’d get up about three hours later for an 11 o’clock kick off smelling of booze!” The club’s original decor has been lovingly preserved, with beautiful, 17th Century oak panelling throughout and chandeliers from the Rothschild Palace hanging from the ceilings - save for one, memorable absence, where legendary The Who drummer, Keith Moon leapt from his table and brought the chandelier crashing to the floor before being escorted from the club screaming: “You can’t ban me from Tramp! Where else will I go?”

“During the 1970s it wasn’t uncommon to see George Best on the dance floor while Sir Matt Busby frantically called the club’s front desk, trying to locate his absent star player”

He was welcomed back 24 hours later, after apologising profusely and paying for the damage. But while celebrity anecdotes undoubtedly helped to build interest in this mysteriously secretive club on the border of St. James’s and Mayfair, it has flourished through five decades thanks to its core principles: To offer luxurious service and fine dining in a relaxed and sociable environment; and to treat every member as a VIP. General Manager, David Fleming, says: “Tramp is more than just a members club. It is an intimate space with a limited membership and we pride ourselves on being able to welcome each and every guest by name, remember their favourite drink and where they like to sit in the restaurant or bar. “The club was built on quiet word-of-mouth, with our details being passed on by members on film sets, in business meetings and between bands, and over the years it has almost become a ‘password’ around the world; members frequently tell me how they’ve been to a far flung place and been given the best table in a restaurant because the owner is also a member of Tramp. “We talk about our membership as a family and in many cases, they really are - we have original members whose children and even grandchildren have grown up and joined the club and three generations can use it together. “If these walls could talk, they’d have a lot of stories to tell; but of course, they wouldn’t say a thing - because that’s the Tramp way.” The club launched its 50th anniversary celebrations with a star-studded party in May, attended by Sir Rod Stewart, Sir Michael Caine, Dame Joan Collins, Bill Wyman, Nathalie Dormer, Mark Ronson and many more, and members will enjoy further special events throughout the rest of the year. Prospective members may apply via the club’s website at www.tramp.co.uk/memberships. But remember: What happens in Tramp, stays in Tramp. FEBRUARY 2020 67

Situated under the Northern Lights in the winter and the midnight sun during the summer months, this unique hotel alternates between drifting on the Yule River and being frozen to it… depending on the season. Based on the idea of a floating sauna and incorporating the Lake’s history of transportation, Arctic Bath has taken this design concept one step further with a selection of cabins both on water and on land. Going hand-in-hand with its astounding design is its approach to wellness that flows from the spa through to the restaurant where smoothies and balanced meals are available.

ME Dubai Opening: February 2020 In a city that’s always competing to break world records, hotel brands have had to get creative in order to stand out, and ME Dubai is certainly set to be a head turner. The first Middle East hotel for the ME by Melia hotel group will open inside The Opus building which has been designed both inside and out by late architect Zaha Hadid. Its exterior resembles a futuristic contortion which appears to defy gravity with a hole in its centre, and the interiors reflect the fashionable and modern ethos of the brand. Located between Dubai Creek and Downtown, its central location is complemented by its range of restaurants – we’re tipping it to be one of the hottest dining destinations in the emirate! Bringing London’s famed ROKA Japanese robata to the UAE as well as a hip rooftop bar, similar to our capital’s Radio Rooftop, we know where we’ll be heading after dark. 70 FEBRUARY 2020

Six Senses New York Opening: End 2020 Spotted between The Hudson River and The High Line in Midtown Manhattan is Six Senses New York, the first North American resort for the sustainably focused hotel chain. Contemporary rooms and suites will provide a sanctuary from the bustle of New York City and each room category will boast every modern convenience needed to aid a restful stay. Top 5 wildlife species to see on a cruise to Antarctica T

he ‘White Continent’ is a photogenic dream and the last frontier for intrepid explorers. Enter a frozen world where seals lazily watch the ships go by, and stark white icebergs stand out vividly against the deep blue sea. A once-in-a-lifetime adventure awaits for anyone making this voyage across the sea.

Emperor Penguins Perhaps Antarctica’s most famous residents, you’ll see penguins everywhere, from rockhoppers bouncing across the windswept Falkland Islands to Adélie, gentoo and chinstrap penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula itself. Emperor penguins are the largest of all 18 species of penguin and are amazing birds. They not only survive the Antarctic winter, but they breed during the worst weather conditions on earth. Emperor penguins breed in colonies scattered around the Antarctic continent. Colonies range in size from a few hundred to over 20,000 pairs. Most colonies are situated on the fast-ice that is locked between islands or grounded icebergs and because of this you have to be very determined or very lucky to see them.

Leopard Seals You won’t find any polar bears at the South Pole but that doesn’t mean the Antarctic is free of predators. If you’re lucky you might get to witness leopard seals hunting penguins, a spectacle akin to watching an Attenborough documentary playing out before your eyes! Leopard seals are solitary animals that inhabit pack-ice surrounding the Antarctic continent. They eat almost anything, including penguins, fish, squid, and crustaceans. They also eat the pups of other seal species including crabeater, Weddell and southern fur seals.

Killer Whales Several species of whale make the journey south to the chilly waters off Antarctica, including the very rare southern right whale and the blue whale. Killer whales are toothed whales, with true teeth rather than fibrous plates for filter-feeding. They are found in every ocean including Arctic and Antarctic regions. They hunt for prey which includes fish, penguins, seals and even other whales. A killer whale

76 FEBRUARY 2020

can measure up to 9.5 metres and weigh between 10 to 11 tons. Killer whales are very common in the sea, with an approximate population of 70,000 but in winter they migrate away from the cold water of Antarctica. Killer whales are highly social animals and live in groups. The vocal behaviour of these whales becomes specific for each group.

Wandering Albatross Wandering albatross have the largest wingspan of any living bird in the world, ranging between 2.5 to 3.5 metres. They are native to the Southern Ocean region, also found within the islands off Antarctica. Using their large wingspan, wandering albatross glide for hours in ocean wind. These birds spend most of their lives in the air and are rarely found on land, except during the breeding season. Wandering albatross breed only once every two years, and the task of incubating the half-kilogram egg and rearing the chick is shared by both parents. Their diet consists of fish, cephalopods, jellyfish, and on rare occasions, crustaceans. They also eat penguin and seal carrion.

Elephant Seals Elephant seals are the largest seals on the Antarctic continent. Elephant seals grow up to 6 feet in length and weigh up to 4 tons. They are named after the large proboscis (nose) of the adult males, which is used to make loud roaring sounds, especially during the mating season. They are found in colonies and males fight each other for the pair, making a lot of noise during fighting. Elephant seals breed on land and spend most of their time in the chilly Antarctic ocean during winter season. They feed on fish, squid and other marine food and can live up to two months without eating.

IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TODAY… I

ntroducing Forest School to our boys at Thorpe House Pre-Prep, two years ago, was an exciting venture. To this day, I have never heard anything but enthusiastic exclamations from the boys at the anticipation of adventures to come and throughout every session. Groans of, ‘is it time to go back?’ are commonplace when our fun ends with hot chocolate around the ‘Smokey Doughball Café’ (our fire pit). Mother Nature and her seasons dictate our learning. The fresh air and physical exercise afforded to the boys at Forest School work in tandem with their generous games, PE and swimming lessons, plus regular runs in our large field at playtime, allowing them to sit and attend in the more conventional classroom lessons; it’s a symbiotic learning platform from Pre-School to Year 6. Letting off steam, laughing and chatting, learning about the natural world and new skills with fire and tools, plus climbing trees, tackling eco-issues and building dens, enriches our boys with a taste of life gone by, when such adventures were part of growing up; healthy for both mind and body. Our boys learn far better when they’re involved; when they can contribute to their learning. In the beauty and calm ambiance of the forest, they can blossom physically, emotionally and grow in confidence. The skills which are all important in their future adult lives are nurtured at Forest School. Emotional intelligence, creativity and adaptability are all fostered in the plentiful learning opportunities therein. Boys communicate far more in the outdoors, where there’s no need to put your hand up to speak and where conversation and negotiation flourish naturally.

82 FEBRUARY 2020

Anyone familiar with the wonderful ideology of the Early Years curriculum, will be pleased to know that the child-initiated learning mantra is at the heart of Forest School education. It is an enabling learning environment where the unique child is educated to blossom without anxiety or threat, only to follow the natural path which their individual needs request. Our Pre-School Class, from age 3, enjoys two Forest School sessions each week, one of these with the Reception boys, to enable peer modelling. Learning in the forest allows accelerated development in the three key areas of ‘Communication and Language’, ‘Personal, Social and Emotional Development’ and ‘Physical Development’, which are fundamental to each child to learn academically. From turntaking on a hammock, or finding treasure in our Pre-School class, to lighting their own little fires in Year 1, each boy will come away from the forest feeling a little taller and more able than he was before. Every session ends with hopes for the next one and, as their teacher, my plans are told to me by buzzing, enthusiastic and red-cheeked pupils. It’s certainly a boy-centred approach to educating our charges at Thorpe House, where we pride ourselves on small numbers and individual learning. We are a family and we care so much for the boys that we ensure their needs are met within a balanced and healthy curriculum, through which they can happily discover their inner-most abilities and start dreaming of and planning their future. You are warmly invited to visit us at Thorpe House and are welcome to call to reserve your place for a ‘Forest School Stay and Play’; I look forward to meeting you then. EDUCATION ATION EDUC

Benefits of the independent school

W

ith options ranging from boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a school to suit each and every child. Here are some of the reasons why parents are choosing to give their children the unique experience of private school and why it’s worth the financial investment.

Enriched academic opportunities One of the accepted benefits of private schools is that they provide exceptional and challenging educational experiences through extracurricular activities, Advanced Placement courses, and the International Baccalaureate programme, just to name a few. The IB programme focuses on school work and on developing you as a whole person. Private school students constantly score top marks on standardized tests and college entrance exams, and many schools have a 100 per cent rate of students attending their university of choice.

Controlled class sizes A comprehensive study on class size made by educational researchers Bruce Biddler and David Berliner in 2002 showed that the smaller the class size, the better the average student performs on academic achievement tests. The gains from smaller class sizes 84 FEBRUARY 2020

are stronger the longer a child is exposed to them. Private schools vary greatly in size, but depending on their teaching style, almost all focus on the importance of small class sizes to individually help students’ weak areas and advance their strengths.

Dedicated teachers In a study completed by the Fraser Institute in 2007, 91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school. Instructors are both qualified and passionate about their subjects, often holding advanced degrees in their field. Within the tight-knit school community, students have close relationships with their teachers who commonly act as role models. In addition, small class sizes make staff members more readily available for extra help or to further challenge individual students.

Parental involvement Private schools are built around open communication between parents and administration, and they make it a priority to involve parents in the community. From frequent parent-teacher meetings, social events such as parent breakfasts and family camping weekends, and the participation of parent committees in fundraising initiatives, families become an integral part of the child’s education. This common ground also helps strengthen parent-child relationships.

“91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school”

A safe environment

Development for today’s and tomorrow’s world

Private schools have reputations for maintaining high standards for discipline and respect. Lower staff-to-student ratios allow for more effective observation and control of school grounds. The strong sense of community found in private schools also discourages dangerous behaviour. In the Fraser Institute study, around 72 per cent of parents surveyed with children in the private school system strongly agreed that their school was safe, which greatly improves the quality of the child’s educational experience and achievement. The discipline they learn also improves their rates for success in post-secondary education when they are in control of their class attendance and achievement.

Private schools go beyond offering the mandatory subjects required by provincial curriculum; they can offer students a wide range of specializations including arts programs, athletics, maths and science. Private schools are responsible for producing many leaders in politics, business and society, with a history of adapting quickly to changes in technology and culture. And today, they are also sought by parents of children with special needs such as behaviour problems or learning disabilities.

Ample resources At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond. Quality resources provide students with the opportunity to fully explore their interests and talents.

Extracurricular activities While academics remain the priority for most private schools, many also place a strong focus on a wellrounded education and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, arts or clubs. This involvement helps stimulate students in their studies, as noted in a study at Stanford University that found that students involved in the arts are more motivated to learn and are three times more likely to win a school attendance award. Extracurricular activities can provide a much-needed break from the stresses of academics while developing skills and engaging in valuable social situations.

READY FOR THE FUTURE Martin Hall,

W

Head at ACS Hillingdon International School

hen I speak to parents about what they want for their children, the most usual answer is simply to be happy. They also want to know, however, that their children will leave school ready for the future with the aptitudes they need to thrive. But what are those characteristics and skills? Recent research from the World Economic Forum asked executives from the world’s leading companies what they thought would be the most important job skills in 2020. They cited complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and emotional intelligence as the top five aptitudes. Education must give young people the foundations of literacy, numeracy and scientific knowledge plus a broad range of skills readying them for university and beyond. The International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) programmes are two such qualifications that successfully marry academic rigour with the development of a global mindset and other valuable life skills; all nurtured here at ACS International School Hillingdon. The IB allows students to select a wide range of topics to study across the sciences, arts and languages, ensuring they graduate with a mix of skills rather than the comparatively narrow subject areas of A Level study for instance. The AP is a qualification widely respected by universities internationally and in the UK, allowing students to 86 FEBRUARY 2020

select specific subjects from across the curriculum and complete them in one year. By offering AP and the IB, ACS Hillingdon is able to provide tailored education for each student, relevant to their passions and learning style. Both qualifications encourage students to develop an inquiring mind and critical thinking, then apply their knowledge to the world around them. Importantly, in our globally interconnected world, the IB and AP approach all subjects with a cross-cultural perspective. Subjects are studied in the classroom from multiple viewpoints and, coupled with a class comprising of many different nationalities, students develop a broad appreciation of different ways of thinking. For us though, it is not enough that students are simply ready for the world beyond the school gates, we want all our ACS graduates to have confidence to pursue opportunities wherever it may take them, make waves and change things for the better. This means encouraging students to embrace creativity, take action on meaningful issues such as the climate change protests, and dedicate time in service to their wider community. Just two recent examples include the five students who took part in internships with multi-national eyecare charity such as Orbis UK or those who spent the last year fundraising and then visiting for the ACS Hillingdon’s partner school in Kenya. In an effort to develop students who are intellectually, creatively and physically balanced, our students, emerging global citizens, work hard on gaining a deeper understanding of social and environmental responsibility and their ability to create positive change within these areas. It’s certainly a very exciting new world that awaits our graduates each year, and they depart our school equipped not only with the necessary skills they need for higher education but also to break boundaries, no matter what their future holds. www.acs-schools.com

“The IB instils in students a curiosity and it is through this curiosity that we get a passion for learning – discovering new things, understanding how the world works around us and ultimately a sense of taking a risk to learn new things.” – Isabella Rose, ACS Hillingdon alumna

Beaconsfield High celebrates outstanding Ofsted result!

B

eaconsfield High School is celebrating the publication of their Ofsted report which rates the girls’ grammar school ‘Outstanding’ in all areas. The report states that pupils “are fiercely proud of their school and of their own achievements” and in terms of leadership, Mrs Smith is “passionate about pupils’ entitlement to a well-rounded education… with the governing body and her senior leadership team, she has transformed the curriculum.” The new Ofsted framework has been in place since September 2019 and prioritises the depth and effectiveness of the curriculum provision rather than the raw data and results of the previous framework; many say this makes it harder to achieve an outstanding rating. The five focus areas of this new framework are Quality of Education, Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development, Sixth Form Provision and Leadership and Management. Mrs Smith told us that she is “incredibly proud of the remarkable learning community that makes up Beaconsfield High School and all of the hard work that teachers and support staff put in to broaden and deepen the curriculum in order that it is memorable for students.” She also said that she was delighted to read the public acknowledgement of the additional time that all students and staff give to projects that are not just based in the classroom but are designed to develop remarkable citizens

who have empathy and show kindness; “Through volunteering, performances and charitable work, pupils support the local community…pupils make a difference in school through the school council or eco-prefects, confident that teachers will listen to and act on their views”. A team of five very positive and professional inspectors spent two days at the school the week before the Christmas holidays and carried our ‘deep dives’ in mathematics, English, geography, modern foreign languages, drama and art. Whilst learning is a priority, inspectors also noted that “leaders and governors rightly give a high priority to pupils’ mental health.” Mrs Smith said that this had been and continued to be a clear priority for the future plans of the school and its students; much has already been put in place to help build students’ resilience and ability to cope in such a pressured life. Dr Lorraine Couves, Chair of Governors said that the focus of the governing body was to ensure that the school promoted the ambitious vision to be a “happy, high achieving learning community; discovering and developing individual potential”. She felt the observation from the inspectors saying “pupils throw themselves into their learning and into the remarkable range of extra-curricular opportunities…in one pupil’s words ‘there is something for everyone” genuinely reflected that vision entirely. www.beaconsfieldhigh.bucks.sch.uk

Merchant Taylors’ Prep I

n 2014, we formed an alliance with Merchant Taylors’ to create, for the first time in the Northwood area, a through school for boys aged 3 to 18. This has generated much excitement in the local community and beyond, and has enabled us to provide a seamless education from prep school through to senior school. Our Pre-Prep department, for 3 to 7 year old boys, is a vibrant and dynamic part of our school, where the pupils are educated by professional staff that provide a nurturing environment in which each pupil is valued for himself. We pride ourselves on instilling values, such as compassion and respect, and learning dispositions, such as perseverance and independence, at the same time as ensuring the highest standards of academic achievements. If you come to visit our school, you will see happy and confident children who are excited by the stimulating curriculum that we provide. Through these aims, we believe that education is about promoting intellectual curiosity in which children are motivated by and fully involved in their own learning. www.mtsn.org.uk

THERE’S NO NEED TO LIVE IN THE SHADOWS OF CATARACTS Cataracts are the world’s leading cause of blindness and surgery to remove them is the most regularly performed operation in the UK with figures showing that around 300,000 procedures are carried out every year.Yet there are still thousands of people living in the shadows of cataracts

E

ye experts are urging people to know the signs and to seek advice if they think they are developing cataracts. Mr Sundeep Kheterpal, Senior Ophthalmic Consultant at Spire Thames Valley Hospital, explains that although cataracts are prevalent, they can be treated successfully to restore vision. “A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. Basically the lens focuses light into a sharp image on the retina, which relays messages through the optic nerve to the brain. If the lens is cloudy from a cataract, the image you see will be blurry.” Cataracts develop slowly and hence the symptoms are gradual in onset. The tell-tale signs include blurred or misty vision, glare or haloes around lights, poor vision in low light and faded colours. You may experience difficulty with reading and driving especially in low light. If you wear glasses, you may feel your lenses are constantly dirty and need cleaning. In addition to causing problems with your vision, advanced cataracts may mask eye conditions that affect the retina and optic nerve such as diabetes and glaucoma. Whilst most cataracts develop as a result of ageing, other causes included trauma, medications such as steroids, general health conditions such as diabetes and cataracts can also be inherited.

98 FEBRUARY 2020

“Surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear artificial one. In the past only monofocal replacement lenses were available meaning these could fix your near or distant vision but not both. However, we now have multifocal lenses that can achieve both near and distance vision as well as ‘toric lenses’ that can correct astigmatism,” explains Mr Kheterpal. Prior to the surgery, scans for evaluating the dimensions of the eye are carried out which help the surgeon to precisely calculate the power of the replacement lens required. The surgery takes about 25 minutes and is performed, in the vast majority of cases, under local anaesthetic. Patients are usually home within a few hours and an improvement in vision may be noticed within the first few hours and days after the surgery. It is advisable to take a week off work and most people can resume their normal day to day activities within two to four weeks. “The latest innovations in cataract surgery allow a rapid restoration of sight, and allow patients to enjoy their hobbies and day-to-day life without the constant dependence on glasses and contact lenses,” adds Mr Kheterpal. Mr Sundeep Kheterpal MA, FRCS, MRCOphth Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon Mr Kheterpal consults at the Spire Thames Valley Hospital on Monday’s and appointments can be made by calling 01753 852299.

Your New Year Dental Survival Guide

The start of a new year brings with it new goals centred around improving our general health and well being. Dental and oral health is central to that, especially with increasing awareness of the links between poor dental health and health conditions including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Here’s our guide to ensuring optimal dental health. decay and periodontal disease. Where there is insufficient saliva serious dental health problems can arise. The most common cause is not drinking enough water. Persistent dry mouth could be a symptom of a disease or a side effect of certain medicines and we can guide you on managing this.

6. Fresh breath The most common cause of this is poor oral health care. Volatile Sulphur Compounds (VSC) are produced when naturally occuring bacteria break down plaque and food debris in the mouth. By keeping plaque and debris in check, bacteria have less to feed on and reproduce less frequently.

7. Clean your tongue

1. Brushing OPENING HOURS Monday 8.30am–5pm Tuesday 8.30am–5pm Wednesday 8.30am–5pm Thursday 8.30am–5pm Friday 8.30am–5pm Early bird, late evening and Saturday appointments available on request

We advise brushing with a fluoride containing toothpaste, first thing in the morning to remove plaque and bacteria that have accumulated over night and to brush last thing at night because our saliva (which helps to keep the cavity-causing plaque off teeth) dries up as we sleep. Ensure you clean all faces of the teeth to avoid missing any areas, and don’t forget your gums.

2. Interdental cleaning Use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean in-between the teeth where plaque collects. Do this before you brush to remove any plaque from these areas. Roughly 90% of problems arise from areas between the teeth so it is important to clean these areas effectively.

3. Electric toothbrushes THE DETAILS The Rear Barn, Marshalls Yard, Windsor End, Beaconsfield HP9 2JJ 01494 412442 www.sorrisodental.co.uk

We recommend electric toothbrushes for their superior performance when compared to manual brushing. Electric toothbrushes tend to have small brush heads that cup around the tooth and are faster and more efficient in cleaning areas of the mouth where bacteria and plaque collect.

4. New toothbrush Your toothbrush should be changed every two to three months as bacteria will collect on the bristles and you will transfer them back into your mouth. Moreover, the bristles will become soft and ineffective. For electric toothbrushes the same rule applies. If your toothbrushes are wearing out before two months then you are probably brushing too harshly. As part of our hygiene services, we can show you the correct way of brushing.

5. Avoid a dry mouth Saliva provides an essential defence against tooth 102 FEBRUARY 2020

A major cause of bad breath can actually come from bacteria building up on your tongue with a high percentage of it accumulating at the back, making it hard to reach. We recommend a proper tongue scrapper every morning to remove tongue plaque and freshen your breath- it is more effective than brushing your tongue with a toothbrush.

8. Use of mouthwash If you are looking for a good mouthwash, then make sure it is alcohol-free, as alcohol is an irritant and can dry out the mouth. This will have the effect of reducing the amount of saliva present, and make your teeth more susceptible to bacteria. Use one containing fluoride, as the benefits of a mouthwash are that they can reach areas not touched by brushing alone. Also best used at a different time to brushing.

9. Whiter teeth A whiter smile eludes health and happiness but can be particularly difficult to achieve for those who smoke, drink red wine and other tannin containing drinks. We offer services that will enable you to achieve whiter teeth.

erry-toned lips have become a winter beauty staple and this year, they’re more relevant than ever, thanks to the AW19 catwalks. From deep merlot at Versace and Roksanda, to juicy plum at Simone Rocha and Tommy Hilfiger, to purple so dark it was almost black at Yohji Yamamoto - this season, the bold lip rules. But if you’re used to wearing nude tones or classic red, darker shades can be rather intimidating. “Lipstick is all about confidence and how comfortable you feel wearing it,” says Zara Findlay, pro make-up artist at Bobbi Brown. Here, Findlay explains how to find the best berry shade for you, plus three ways to wear the trend, and how to tailor the rest of your make-up...

Finding your perfect berry “I like to call this the Five Finger Trick. Pick up five berry lip colours that you’re attracted to - even if you don’t think they will suit you - in different finishes such as matte, sheer or shiny. Swatch them onto your finger tips and looking into a mirror, place each finger against your lip. You will instantly see whether you like the colour against your skin. Just think ‘yes, no or maybe’. This is all about the process of elimination. Clean off the lip colours that are definitely a ‘no’ and you are left with one or two to try. From there, you will be able to decide which is your favourite colour - or you may just end up taking them both.”

on the lips. If you’re worried about how much colour the lipstick has, my favourite tip is to line and fill your lips with your go-to nude lip liner then add the lipstick on top. This will give you a slightly more muted version of the original colour. To get the fullest colour pay off, maybe for a special event, pick a lip liner that is a similar tone, line the lips, apply lipstick, then add a gloss on top for a full-coverage, glossy finish.

Nars Lipstick in Full Time Females, £22, available from Nars Nudestix Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencil in Raven, £20, available from Cult Beauty

Make-up to wear with berry-toned lipstick “If you’re wearing it sheer, you can doll up your eyes and cheeks to add a little more colour to the rest of your face. I love running a little of the lipstick between my fingertips and bouncing it on my cheeks as a soft blusher. If you’re wearing it as medium coverage, you are able to play with how bold or subtle the rest of your make-up is. If you’re wearing it with full colour pay off, it’s best to keep the eyes really subtle. Maybe just a clean liner and a soft wash of a nude shimmer shadow.” Zara Findlay, pro make-up artist at Bobbi Brown; Circle: model backstage at Simone Rocha AW19, make-up by MAC

Lipstick Queen Lip Mousse in Royal Icing, £22, available from Space NK

Kiss Me Quick Lipstick in Plum Pout, £20, available from Tropic

How to wear your berry lip “Lipsticks can we worn in all kinds of ways. If you want the colour to be sheer, use your finger to swipe a little colour and press it on your lip. This will give you your sheerest coverage and a ‘lip stained’ effect. You can add your favourite lip balm on top for a more moisturised finish. To get a medium colour pay off, swipe the colour directly 104 FEBRUARY 2020

B RAND DE S IGN S This month we spoke to Ed Goldney, Lighting Design Director of BRAND Designs based in Chesham. You are a lighting designer, what does that mean? We take amazing spaces and stunning interiors and make them truly beautiful with the use of a well planned lighting scheme. Fine homes deserve to be finished with fantastic lighting, adding drama and definition, bringing out true colours of fabrics and finishes, and highlighting features both inside and out. So, it’s not all about stunning pendant lighting? These are the stunning eye catching pieces that people see when they first walk into your home. However, these wow factor finishing pieces should be seen as the icing on the cake, like the hanging of your favourite artwork. A quality lighting design will incorporate lots of other factors, with consideration for task lighting, subtle mood lighting, hidden and feature light. We like to call it “layers of light”. When is the ideal time to engage a lighting designer? Quite simply, as early as possible in your project. As designers, we are adept at working from architect plans, and regularly work with project managers and interior designers in order to realise your dreams. Every project is approached with a client on an individual basis, and the more detail we have, the 112 FEBRUARY 2020

better. Importantly, before your installers are first on site, we will provide a full set of client approved plans, incorporating the lighting layout, circuitry and load schedules for all fittings and control. What has been your favourite project to date? All of our projects are wonderful when you get to see the finished result and are memorable for their own reasons. However, a stand out solution we created was for a particular client who wanted to draw only subtle attention to his car collection which could be seen from the downstairs snug. With some careful lighting, the cars appear like a silhouette backdrop through the internal landscape windows. Blissful! What key trends do you see for residential lighting in 2020? Art Deco with its strong geometric lines will make a bold statement this year, for an informal but arty feel to a space. Retro with a modern twist continues to thrive as well, but now with a less industrial feel. Smart solutions are also rapidly becoming the norm for our homes, with full house lighting control and automated window shades at the top of list. www.brand-designs.com

SPACERS TILE AND WOOD FLOORING LTD

S

“When you choose to buy your tiles or flooring from Spacers you are assured that it is among some of the best available in the world…”

114 FEBRUARY 2020

pacers Tile and Wood Flooring have been supplying high quality Engineered Oak floors, Porcelain Wall and floor tiles, mosaics, glass and Natural Stone tiles to the retail and commercial sector for over 25 years. We have worked closely with our factories to produce a range of wood flooring and Porcelain Tiles that not only mirror current trends but is technically and environmentally the most advanced available. All our Engineered Oak is thoroughly tested, is EUTR compliant and SVLK certified. The top layer is genuine Western European Oak. None of it is Chinese or Siberian so you are assured of its source and quality. The ‘Core” (the important bit) is constructed of single species Plantation Hevea (Rubberwood). It doesn’t grow naturally in South East Asia so is farmed for this purpose. As the Hevea tree nears the end of its rubber producing life it is felled and immediately replaced with a younger sapling that not only uses up more harmful CO2 but also produces more rubber. The Hevea used for the core of all our wood flooring has a density similar to Oak giving our floors unsurpassed stability in all different climates and environments. Hevea will always outperform any plywood or softwood cored material found in so many cheaper alternative wood floors. The back layer construction is also a locally grown plantation pine species, which again adds to the already excellent stability of our flooring. The vast majority of our wood flooring has

undergone some degree of hand finishing ensuring a consistent high quality, high performance wood floor. This hand finishing gives each of our floors a ‘bespoke’ feel. Our ‘Antique’ finished floors all feature textures and surfaces produced entirely by hand rather than automation that gives each style a unique feel in terms of grain and colour. FRESH DESIGN INSPIRATION

N

ow that depressing January has been and gone and Spring is just peeking around the corner, it really is the perfect time to get planning for a fabulous new look for your home. Knowing where to start can be difficult and feel overwhelming, so here’s a few pointers to get you started. When taking on a new project, we encourage people to consider their own personalities, family dynamics and how they wish to live in the rooms they want to redesign. The space and the layout need to compliment your lifestyle, therefore this is an important first step. If you have a specific item you absolutely love, this is a great place to start. For instance, if you have a spectacular piece of art, then picking up on the colours and tones will help to set the scene for the design scheme. This is often the way we start with a new design project. Once you have established how you want to use the room and the look you want to achieve, you can then start to think about space planning and the furniture layout. The floor plans, windows, doors, electrical and plumbing points all need to be measured and then carefully planned out. When consulting on design projects we aim to maximize the useable space, with a goal of creating areas that flow harmoniously and enhance the way in which we live. There are of course many important components to factor into any project - such as whether a ceiling will be able to carry the weight of a chandelier, or how electrics need to be proportionally positioned for lighting, for example wall lights in conjunction with surrounding elements. It is therefore essential that every area of the room is carefully considered at this early stage – before any build work commences. If you’re working with an interior designer, a drawing package would then be compiled to include accurate floor plans with all necessary measurements, elevations, and detailed specifications to bring the project plans together. Following this important stage - the exciting part

“If you are seeking an interior designer or planning on making renovations to your home, Tobias Oliver Interiors would be delighted to help you”

of the project can commence – the creation of the all-important moodboards, to showcase furniture, fabric, and finishing options. Decisions here will determine the estimates that need to be prepared, and it’s important to take the time to ensure every part of the project is included when agreeing costs - especially if you’re taking on structural alterations. This way you can be confident your budget has been correctly invested, to avoid costly mistakes. When we work with clients, we want to help them achieve their ultimate interior design dream, however, to achieve this we need to be mindful where to use the assigned budget. Sometimes this means finding clever solutions, for example, if the client loves a fabric for curtains that is particularly expensive - an option could be to use this fabric on the front of a cushion instead. There are countless ways of juggling items in the design scheme to achieve the design vision and keep within budget. Once the estimates have been agreed, this is really when the work can start on your redesign and full procurement of all aspects of the scheme can commence. Once orders have been placed, they need to be carefully coordinated and monitored to ensure a smooth process, and of course rigorous project management throughout is crucial. Finally, once the building works are complete, the installation of furniture, lighting and soft furnishings can take place, and your dream space will be realised. Finishing with hanging the piece of art you had picked at the outset of the project – the cherry on the cake! If you are seeking an interior designer or planning on undertaking some home improvements, we would be delighted to help you. We are located on Berkhamsted High Street and would welcome you in our stunning showroom where we also have a range of beautiful art, gifts and homewares. www.tobiasoliverinteriors.com

INDIVIDUAL STYLE Glamour, fun and feathers all feature in this year’s hottest looks - but first and foremost, individual style rules. WORDS: Gabrielle Fagan.

I

f you want your interiors to look fashionable and Instagrammable, then you need to know what’s hot for the home this year. There’s full-on colour, as well as more paredback looks with natural materials (rattan’s ruling currently), alongside some key must-haves - love seats, dressing tables, and glamorous headboards. In other words, plenty of trends and stylish items to choose from. But what’s emerging most strongly is that this decade, there’s no need to follow the crowd. Trends should be followed selectively rather than religiously. A successful home is where your taste rules (we’re all becoming much more informed and confident about expressing it, thanks to inspirationfilled sites like Instagram and Pinterest). We’ve chosen some best buys and brilliant looks to help you create your own perfect, personally-tailored space....

Feel the love We’re embracing curves and cushioning in seating, as we hanker after homes which cosset and comfort us, and the love seat has become a must-have. “Love seats are the ultimate giant armchair for those who love to stretch out and get comfy, or if you’re feeling romantic you can snuggle up together,” says Claire Wilks, from the Sofa.com design team. “They’re also a great space-saving size for those who are tight on room. Velvet, so practical now with protective finishes, are one of the most popular upholstery choices and they ramp up the luxe effect.”

Turn to table-scaping Table-scaping is the new on-trend description for creatively decorating tables. So stand down your boring workaday china and go all out with fancy cutlery, table linen and snazzy plates. It’s all about dressing to impress. For inspiration, trying searching #tabledecor and #tablesetting on Instagram.

Rule with ribbing Grooved, ribbed textures are riding high this year, and the effect can be seen in upholstery, wood, and glass. We love this stripe-effect, ribbed cabinet.

Explore wild style If you’re over that hot, steamy jungle look - all palm prints and tropical colours - the latest, more pared-back desert look could be just for you. Bold tribal prints, an earthy palette, natural materials and vibrant animal prints are combined in the new George Home collection, which is so well-priced you can afford to experiment. But beware: it could inspire some serious summer wanderlust...

Wing it Birds are having a moment - and zingy pink 120 FEBRUARY 2020

“Inspired by increased global travel and our adventures around the world, trends are set to celebrate unique pieces collected or inspired by past travels, that bring back memories and create a unique and personal interior”

flamingos are now competing for attention with that most regal bird, the peacock, whose brilliant blue plumage is so in tune with 2020’s trend for blue hues (Pantone’s Colour of the Year is Classic Blue).

Pamper and pose Special stand-out pieces make a room. Think cocktail cabinets which add glamour as well as holding all those drinks and glasses. Dressing tables are now vying for attention too - there’s a brilliant array of slim, handsome examples suitable for compact rooms. And by clearing all that cosmetic clutter, you’ll be well on your way to a peaceful space.

Let your heart rule your head “Just as fashion trends have shifted to celebrate individuality and personal style, so have interiors,” says Lucy St George, co-founder of uber cool interiors destination, Rockett St George. “I’m always a fan of throwing away the rule book - taste is often overrated - and I believe if you love it and it makes you smile, then it deserves to be celebrated in your room.” Take inspiration from trends and the world around you, she says, but always make your home a reflection of you and what you like. “Go to town with all your favourite things and curate displays around your home that express your individuality so that ‘you do you’!”

Print, both John Lewis.

Go for gold How to instantly add character to a room? A couple of stand-out pieces featuring that winning metallic shimmer should do the trick.

Bring Eastern drama to the boudoir Staying home is the new going out, and JOMO (the ‘joy of missing out’) is a buzzword - which means spaces need spoiling with luxury touches and details. “We’re predicting a rise in Eastern influences across interiors this year,” says Jane Rockett. “Inspired by increased global travel and our adventures around the world, trends are set to celebrate unique pieces collected or inspired by past travels, that bring back memories and create a unique and personal interior.” The style-aware should look out for decadent dark wood, woven cane textures, oriental prints and structure furniture, adds Rockett.

Go green or go home The colour - and its association with eco-friendly living - has been strong for a while and shows no sign of waning. A wall painted in a deep shade of green will ground a space, and other vibrant colours for furniture and accessories will ‘pop’. John Lewis’ ‘Eclectics’ theme for spring/summer is a stylish blend of zingy colour and stand-out designs. Inject punchy shades with contemporary wall prints, jewel-colour lamps and cushions. If you’re feeling flush, invest in an elegant Refine 3 Seater Sofa in a glowing Elegant Velvet Mustard, , and a Lounge Chair in a brilliant pink, blue and orange Ampana FEBRUARY 2020 121

From Marlow to Mustique… T

here are some emails you’ll always remember. “I couldn’t believe the enquiry when it arrived in my in-box” explains Mark Reeve, owner of Wardrobe & Bookcase Co Ltd, “It’s not every day that a project comes through for a job outside of the home counties, let alone in the Caribbean!” So obviously there was great excitement when the Wardrobe and Bookcase Co was asked to estimate for a 5 Bedroom Villa wardrobe project, set in the luxury island of Mustique, home to the rich and famous, including Sir Mick Jagger, Tommy Hilfiger, Bryan Adams and more recently the subject of a documentary about Princess Margaret and her time on the tropical Island! First things first though, we had to be awarded the job. So, we set about scoping the work, estimating, designing and creating the exact specifications for the wardrobes, media cabinets, doors and frames, kitchen and utility area along with general bespoke cabinetry for the client to approve. Being the Caribbean, the humidity is very high, almost 80% at sometimes of the year, and most furniture doesn’t last much longer than a couple of years. We obviously had to take this into account so our cabinetry to stand the test of time. We researched many options and eventually came up with a material that would last 25 years under water, had a super smooth finish so that the spray satin white paint finish could be applied easily prior to being shipped out. It was ideal! After a few design tweaks to meet the client’s exact needs we were delighted to hear we were successful in winning the project. As well as the glamourous location and the design challenges, it

was our largest project so far. Manufacturing began in earnest in July 2018, then we had to ship everything to be spray paint finished at a 40% sheen. After that everything had to packed and put in crates ready for the shipping to St Lucia then on to Mustique. We managed to do all of this on time and the lorry sped away to Dover ready for its 6-week voyage We sent a team of 5 men out to Mustique for the installation, which took about 3 weeks. When we arrived, we could see exactly why Sir Mick & Princess Margret liked the island so much. It was understated luxury and utterly beautiful; turquoise blue seas, white sandy beaches and not a hotel in sight. Our team were put up in a fantastic villa along with a house keeper, chef and waiter!! They were fed morning, noon and night, all served with a smile by amazingly friendly people. Not the normal cup of tea and a biscuit we are usually very grateful to receive! The installation went very smoothly and after the 3 weeks the client was so happy, she ordered some additional smaller items that then had to be manufactured, delivered and installed. Naturally we were delighted to be going back again! Everything we made was uniquely designed for the clients’ storage requirements. We even made the shutters to the master bedroom so that they matched the ventilation bricks that they covered at night. At the end of the project both the builder and the client said they were delighted and that they’d happily spread the word about us. Hopefully, they’ll bump into Sir Mick on the beach and who knows, we may get back there again! www.wardrobeandbookcase.co.uk

IS YOUR HOME GAS SAFE? W e should all take gas safety in our homes seriously as faulty or poorly maintained gas appliances, such as boilers and gas cookers, can have disastrous and deadly consequences. What is Carbon Monoxide? Carbon Monoxide (CO), is an odourless, colourless gas that can cause serious damage to your health and can even kill. Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels such as gas, oil, coal or wood do not burn fully within an enclosed space. What causes Carbon Monoxide? Incorrectly installed, poorly maintained or poorly ventilated household appliances, such as cookers, heaters and central heating boilers, are the most common causes of accidental exposure to carbon monoxide. What if you are exposed to Carbon Monoxide? After breathing in carbon monoxide, it enters your bloodstream and mixes with red blood cells that carry oxygen around your body. When this happens, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen, and this lack of oxygen causes the body’s cells and tissue to die. Effects of severe carbon monoxide poisoning include breathlessness, chest pain, seizures and loss of consciousness. Around 10 to 15% of people who have severe carbon monoxide poisoning develop long-term complications. In very severe cases, it can result in death. Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Symptoms include breathlessness, chest pain, nausea and headaches. If you googled these symptoms then no doubt you’d find a whole bunch of illnesses with the same symptoms. However, the key things to remember are do you only feel like this when you are at home, and do others feel these effects while at your home? Carbon monoxide is difficult to detect because it has no smell, taste or colour. Being aware of the symptoms could save your life as you can inhale it without realising. What to do? If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds or you suspect a leak: • Stop using all appliances and isolate the gas (if you can). • Open all windows and evacuate the property immediately – stay calm and avoid raising your heart rate. • Call the gas emergency number on 0800 111 999 to report the incident or Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Gas Safety Advice Line on 0800 300 363. • Do not go back into the property – wait for advice 124 FEBRUARY 2020

from the emergency services • Get immediate medical help – you may not realise if you’re badly affected by the carbon monoxide and going outside into fresh air won’t treat any exposure by itself. Safety Tips • Have gas appliances checked annually • If you move home request a gas certificate from the previous owners or the estate agent. If there isn’t a certificate then have your home gas safety checked • Never do DIY on gas appliances and never block any vents. Always use a gas safe engineer • Be aware of the dangers and know what the symptoms are • Know what to do in an emergency and who to contact • If you’re renting a property ensure your landlord has produced a gas certificate • Have a Carbon Monoxide alarm installed This article was written for Life Magazine by Heppelthwaite, The Red Van Plumbers, your local plumbing and heating company since 1948. www.redvanplumbers.co.uk. 01628 533 550.

this year’s top Interior Trends

Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at FurnitureChoice.co.uk, shares her top 5 interior trend predictions for 2020 and how to get the look in the home. reflects the purpose of the room so it’s important to know when to heat things up or tone it down. “In the dining area, fire up the atmosphere with canyon clay on the walls,” Rebecca says. “As a toned-down version of orange, it’s a feel-good colour that invites conversation and stirs up the appetite. Colour block it with the wholesome lines of black dining set to create a laidback vibe that’s both eclectic and effortless.”

4. Luxurious marble finishes

1. Eco-friendly and sustainable practices Incorporating sustainable practices into the home has never been more important or on-trend for 2020. One key way to start is to use non-toxic paint on the walls. Free from volatile organic compounds (VOC), non-toxic paint reduces environmental impact by removing chemicals like formaldehyde in the air, which can cause respiratory problems. “Switching to non-toxic paint is more than just a trend,” Rebecca says. ”It’s a strong reminder for us to be mindful of our choices and the impact it has on our planet.” Going green also presents the opportunity to highlight natural and sustainable materials such as wood, jute or rattan which are a subtle nod to the great outdoors. “Good interior design is not only about aesthetics but also about improving your wellbeing,” Rebecca says. “Choose items that are long-lasting and have an enduring appeal. And don’t forget to add actual greenery too, with indoor plants to bring a burst of life to your space.”

2. Japandi minimalist style A hybrid of Scandinavian and Japanese design, Japandi is the hotly tipped minimalist trend for 2020. Both these styles share the same principles: clean, uncluttered interiors that are defined by functional yet sophisticated statement pieces. “The Japandi trend brings together all the details we love about Japanese and Scandinavian design by focusing on simplicity,” Rebecca says. “In the living room, stick to the simple silhouette of a grey fabric sofa and a neutral palette which ticks all the boxes of Japandi by staying true to its minimalist philosophy.”

3. Earthy colour schemes Warm, earthy hues are set to be a favourite in 2020 and can be incorporated into many areas of the home for a bold but relaxing twist. In this update, the colour scheme 128 FEBRUARY 2020

Known for its glamorous finish, marble heads to the dark side with black marble taking the spotlight. “Black marble is set to be a big trend for 2020,” Rebecca declares. “Chic and dramatic, a black marble table in the dining room displays all the hallmarks of luxury with its elegant high gloss finish but with a touch of modern edge. Pair it with curved black fabric dining chairs for an Art Decoinspired touch. However, if a black centrepiece is too over the top for the home, a classic white marble table will always be a timeless pick. Opt for a style with a central pedestal design to maximise space and legroom.”

5. Modern bohemian decor Bohemian-inspired decor gets an update next season by moving away from its usual explosion of colours and patterns towards a more paredback and sophisticated look. “In 2020, we will see a modern take on bohemian decor that’s all about creating a soothing atmosphere with soft, neutral fabrics and rattan,” Rebecca says. “A neutral palette sets a solid foundation to start mixing and matching textures. The fabric and rattan layers add depth to the bedroom while sticking to bohemian design’s signature style.” www.furniturechoice.co.uk
