Your home in divorce I

t goes without saying that separating from a spouse or civil partner is often a stressful and emotional time. Worrying about how to protect your interest in the family home or your right to remain living there is often a concern of many separating couples. Emma McMorrow from the Family Law team at Royds Withy King discusses some of the main points she would advise her clients on.

Leaving your property At the time of separation, most people are still living with their ex-partner. Quite understandably however, one party often choses to leave the home until the divorce or separation has been finalised. When considering whether to remain in the property or not, the first question we are often asked is how leaving affects that party’s interest in or claim to the family home. When you legally and beneficially own the property jointly with your ex-partner, leaving the house does not affect your right to claim your interest in it. However, you may wish to consider how you hold that property moving forwards.

Property ownership A property can be held either as ‘joint tenants’ or ‘tenants in common’. Most couples own their family home as joint tenants. Holding the property in this way means that the property automatically passes to your ex-partner if you die - you cannot pass on your ownership to anyone else in your Will. When a couple separates, holding the property as joint tenants is often no longer desirable. Therefore, many parties choose to change the way in which the property is owned to ‘tenants in common’. This 18 NOVEMBER 2018

means that the property does not automatically go to the other owner if one of you dies and each party has the ability to pass their share in the property to someone else in their Will (be it a child, sibling, parent, new partner etc.).

What if your name is not on the deeds? If the property is only held in your ex-partner’s name, you should take additional steps to protect your interest and your right to remain in your home. Registering your home rights with the Land Registry can help stop your partner selling the property. Before taking this step there are factors to consider, such as whether your spouse or civil partner owns the property with anyone else. If the application is successful you can usually live in the property until the divorce, annulment or dissolution has been finalised and a financial settlement agreed. In some circumstances this right can continue beyond that point if ordered by the court. If you are unsure about how you and your spouse or civil partner own your family home, taking professional advice at the time of separation from a Family Law solicitor can help take away some of the uncertainty and ensure that your position is protected. DIY wills:

are they worth the risk? As the festive season approaches, planning for later life might not be top of everyone’s list – but it’s a great time to think about protecting yourself and your loved ones. Creating a will is a sensible way for people to control what happens to their estate when they pass away. And while it’s tempting to choose a DIY or online will for less than £30, it can be a dicey approach because if mistakes are made or if the strict witnessing rules are not followed correctly, the document could become unenforceable. Thomas Bird, solicitor at B P Collins, advises on what to watch out for.

22 NOVEMBER 2018

DIY It’s easy to make mistakes when creating your own DIY or online will as its execution can be interpreted in several ways. For example, many people fail to secure two witnesses and if they do, some appoint a beneficiary, a minor or ask them to sign at different times – all of which makes the will invalid. Other errors include misspelled names and failure to sign the document. These problems cannot be easily remedied once the person who created the will passes away, so it’s better to seek expert advice to ensure that correct procedures are followed and the will remains effective.

Change in circumstances Problems can also arise if your circumstances change, as many DIY wills cannot accommodate this. With increasingly complex family structures, particularly with the divorce rate continuing to rise and more people having second families – huge life changes are becoming ever more likely. Some handwritten notes on the original will to highlight your new decisions will not suffice. Or what if you left everything to your wife in your basic will, but she has passed away and your will isn’t updated? Your wishes will become invalid and when you pass away, intestacy rules will then apply which may not be to your liking.

Have you thought of everything? You may feel that you’re the only person who knows your life better than anyone else and that you’ve thought everything through before creating

your DIY will. But there may be situations that you’ve not considered that could impact on your estate. This is why it’s useful to seek independent, expert advice. Solicitors have the expertise to challenge your rationale and encourage you to consider other scenarios beyond your current circumstances. With all options considered, your will should remain binding despite any changes that come your way.

Sizeable estates Involving an experienced wills, trusts and probate solicitor is particularly advisable if you have a sizeable estate as they can advise on tax efficient options and trust provisions to protect your assets. The implications of an invalid will can be extremely serious for your beneficiaries. Not only do you risk leaving your loved ones with a financial mess at a time when they could be feeling very emotional, but your legacy could be seriously depleted by legal bills or tax which could have been avoided. B P Collins has a team of wills, trusts and probate lawyers that can review your will and provide bespoke advice on next steps. enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk. 01753 889995. www.bpcollins.co.uk The team are members of the Law Society’s Wills and Inheritance Quality Scheme (WIQS). It provides a best practice quality mark for wills and estate administration advice that consumers can trust and outlines required practices in areas such as will drafting, probate and estate administration.

What a difference a year makes….

Just over a year ago on 2 October 2018, Lennons Solicitors opened up its newest office in Beaconsfield. The Beaconsfield office is headed up by Lennons’ Head of Family, Gavin Henshaw, who works closely alongside residential property expert, John Churchill.

THE DETAILS Gavin Henshaw is a specialist family law solicitor who cares about ensuring clients know their options before incurring legal costs. All family law clients are offered a free ‘no time-limit’ initial meeting at any of our offices. Call Lennons Solicitors on 01494 773377 or visit lennonssolicitors.co.uk for information.

26 NOVEMBER 2018

I

n just a little over 12 months, Lennons Solicitors have fully immersed themselves into the Beaconsfield community. Despite the office only being open for a short time beforehand, Lennons were actively involved in the Beaconsfield Festival of Lights in 2017 and are pleased to again be part of the festival in 2018. To mark the anniversary of Lennons Solicitors’ new Beaconsfield office, Gavin has had a look back to see what significant family law cases have been reported in the last 12 months. At the beginning of 2018 the Supreme Court was given the unenviable task of deciding whether to maintain or withdraw the life support being provided to Alfie Evans. This case understandably gathered a considerable amount of public interest and sympathy due to the various issues involved. However, in April 2018 the Court made the hard decision to order Alfie’s life support should be withdrawn and he unfortunately died shortly afterwards. In June 2018, the Supreme Court heard the application of Rebecca Steinfield and Charles Keidan for Civil Partnerships to be made available to opposite sex couples. This was a long-fought battle by Miss Steifield and Mr Keidan who had argued that the institution of marriage was outdated and was not the way they wanted to formalise their relationship. However, in the absence of being able to enter into a Civil Partnership, there was no other way to legally recognise their relationship and obtain the legal status this would provide. As a result of the application, the Supreme Court gave judgment that restricting Civil Partnerships to only same sex couples was discriminatory and that, as a result of this Miss Steifield’s and Mr Keidan’s respective Human Rights had been breached. Conversely, in respect of divorce matters in July 2018 the Supreme Court had to decide the difficult matter of whether Mrs Tini Owens should be permitted to divorce her husband, Mr Hugh Owens,

on the ground of his Unreasonable Behaviour. Under the current law, in order for a divorce to be granted on this ground, the Court must be satisfied that the party in question had behaved in such a way that the other party cannot reasonably be expected to continue to live with them. At an earlier hearing, the Court had confirmed it was not satisfied as to this fact and had refused to grant a Decree Nisi. Mrs Owens subsequently sought to overturn this decision by first making an application to the Court of Appeal and, thereafter, to the Supreme Court. On 25 July 2018, the Supreme Court gave Judgment on this issue and upheld the original Court’s decision thereby leaving Mrs Owens in a situation where she would not be able to obtain a divorce until 2020 when the ground for divorce of 5 years separation would be available to her. Whilst to many the Judgement of the Supreme Court did not follow the common-sense approach, it did follow the letter of the law. However, to many within the family law profession, the decision of the Supreme Court was designed to put pressure on the government to reform the current divorce law and civil partnership laws. This, alongside the judgment given in Miss Steifield’s and Mr Keidan’s Civil Partnership case together with a general public appetite for change, seem to have now forced the Government’s hand on these issues. In September 2018, it was reported that that the Government is actively seeking to change the current divorce laws so as to adopt a ‘no fault’ divorce process at some point in the future. Then, in October 2018, it was announced by Theresa May that she would be seeking to end the ban on same sex couples entering into Civil Partnerships. As such, as we fast approach 2019, it would seem that there will be some significant changes to how family law matters are dealt with in the future.

November at Chorleywood Bookshop N ovember is a busy month for the Chorleywood and Gerrards Cross Bookshops… Bob the Cat is back, as is Monty Python star Michael Palin and we will be remembering the Great War and so much more. We begin November with Elly Griffiths and her twisted tale… Clare Cassidy is no stranger to murder. As a literature teacher specialising in the Gothic writer RM Holland, she teaches a short course on it every year. Then Clare’s life and work collide when one of her colleagues is found dead, a line from an RM Holland story by her body. The investigating police detective is convinced the writer’s works somehow hold the key to the case. Not knowing who to trust, and afraid that the killer is someone she knows; Clare confides her darkest suspicions and fears about the case to her journal. Then one day she notices some other writing in the diary. Writing that is not hers... Ticket £8.00, book £10.00. By August 1918, the outcome of the Great War was not in doubt: the Allies would win. But what was unclear was how this defeat would play out. In The Last Battle, Peter Hart, author of Gallipoli and The Great War, and oral historian at the Imperial War Museum, brings to life the dramatic final weeks of the war, as men fought to secure victory, with survival seemingly only days, or hours away. Drawing on first-hand accounts and dwelling with equal weight on strategy, tactics and individual experience, this is a powerful and detailed account of history’s greatest endgame. Its whereabouts had been a mystery for over a century and a half. Its name was HMS Erebus. Now Michael Palin – former Monty Python stalwart and much-loved television globetrotter, is coming to Chorleywood and Gerrards Cross Bookshops, as he brings this extraordinary ship back to life with his new book ‘Erebus’. The result is a wonderfully evocative account of one of the most extraordinary adventures of the nineteenth century, as reimagined by a master explorer and storyteller. Civil partnerships a step in the right direction? Heather Jarrold-Taylor is a solicitor at K J Smith Solicitors. Heather has a passion for family law and is dedicated to supporting her clients with an empathetic and professional approach. She is determined to make her clients feel at ease throughout the most difficult of times.

A

s you may have recently read, Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan were successful in their recent Supreme Court case in their campaign for civil partnerships to be open to heterosexual couples. In some countries and states, such as the Netherlands, Hawaii and South Africa, civil partnerships have been available for many years for heterosexual couples. In light of this, last week the government announced that heterosexual couples, residing in England and Wales, will have the right to enter into civil partnerships (a unification previously restricted to same sex couples). The Civil Partnership Act 2004 created civil partnerships, enabling same sex couples to formalise their relationship and acquire rights comparable to those held by married heterosexual couples. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, which came into force in 2014, allowed same sex couples to get married or convert their civil partnership into a marriage. As a result, same sex couples had the option of either marriage or a civil partnership, whilst heterosexual couples only had the option of marriage. There are numerous reasons why heterosexual couples want the right to enter into a civil partnership rather than marriage. For example, entering into a civil partnership will allow couples greater protection in their relationship without having to embark on the traditional route of marriage, which some perceive to be outdated and patriarchal. As such, this recent news has given 30 NOVEMBER 2018

heterosexual couples the ability to acquire rights in their relationship, without the only option being marriage to do so. The change in the law may also assist couples that are currently cohabitating and do not want to marry, but believe they are protected under ‘common law marriage’. Unfortunately, though this term is regularly used, it does not provide unmarried couples who are cohabiting any form of protection or rights in their relationships. Therefore, to gain protection, the options available to cohabitees are either through marriage or a cohabitation agreement. However, moving forward, cohabitees will now have a third option of entering into a civil partnership to gain rights and security in their relationship. Yet this still leaves a grey area for those who cohabit but do not wish to enter into either a civil partnership or a marriage as there remains a gap in legal protection, rights and security for them. Although the change seems to be a step in the right direction and has diminished the discrimination between heterosexual and same sex couples being able to enter into a civil partnership, there is still a gap in the law in relation to cohabiting couples and their protection. Also, at present, there is no time scale in place as to when the change in legislation will occur to allow heterosexual couples to enter into a civil partnership. Therefore, until a timescale is produced and the rights of cohabiting couples are addressed, it is, unfortunately, a waiting game.

‘A

rt and creative thinking are powerful tools and need to be encouraged in our children – I believe that children are born artists,’ says founder Sarah Thomas. ‘They have no fear when they are young – they learn through play and making mistakes, something that is lost in them by the time they reach higher education.’ At ARTLIFE we place value on this amazing gift of creativity through our classes.’ With over 23 years of experience working in the creative sector and as a practising teacher at one of London’s leading art and design universities, Amersham based mother of two, Sarah recognised the lack of creativity available to young people in mainstream education and the benefits if nurtured from an early age. ‘The process involved in producing ‘art’ encourages problem-solving through creative thinking. Our aim is to harness this in all of our students giving them the confidence to draw on these skills in other areas of their lives. The studio offers a true art education with a difference. Students are encouraged to come and explore how to push their creative boundaries through fun structured classes that educate and stimulate key areas of creative ability in children and young adults aged between 4.5 and 18 years of age. ‘We use workshops as a starting point to encourage children to explore painting, printing, sculpture and drawing in a hands-on and fun way. For us it is the process, not the end result, that is fundamental to the understanding of what it is to produce art.’ ARTLIFE Studio classes run from the 3rd November 2018 at St Mary’s Church rooms, Flint Barn Court, Old Amersham. Chef Laurie Gear

November recipe & kitchen news

O

ur inspiration for this dish was to use a seasonal, locally sustainable wild shot venison from our very own Chiltern Hills, and combine with the best of season. With the leaves falling and the cooler air moving in it is time to make the most of the last of the autumnal squashes and the bounty of English hard fruits. Earlier in the season the elder tree

offered it plump purple berry which we converted through kitchen alchemy at the restaurant into a traditional old English sauce called ‘pontack’ to glaze the local pears to accompany the venison. This provides an acidity to help balance the dish. By the time this recipe has reached you the elderberry will have fallen but can be substituted by the more seasonal cranberry.

RECIPE: Saddle of Wild Shot Venison, Glazed Pears, Pontack and Butternut Squash Gnocchi Ingredients Serves 4 • 4 x 150g wild shot venison steak cut from the saddle • Approx 50g butter and olive oil for frying • ½ a savoy cabbage cut very finely • 2 large conference pears – peeled and cored Pontack Makes 150ml

• 250g ripe elderberries (substitute fresh cranberries) • 250ml cider vinegar • 3 all spice berries • 3 cloves • 1 bay leaf • 50 bruised ginger Gnocchi Serves 4 • 200g cooked Desiree or Maris piper potatoes • 100g cooked

butternut squash • 65g plain flour • 1 tsp salt • ¼ tsp white pepper • ½ an egg beaten • 30g ricotta cheese • 1 sprig of thyme • Venison Jus • 500ml chicken stock • 150g roasted venison bones • 2 carrots • 1 stick celery • 2 onions • 2 cloves garlic • 80ml red wine

1. Place the elderberries (or cranberries) and cider vinegar in a tray and cook at a low temperature (60°c) for 4 hours. Strain through a sieve and press to get out all excess juice 2. Put liquid back onto the heat, add all the other ingredients and reduce for 20 minutes. Strain, then pour into sterilised bottles and seal Butternut Squash Gnocchi 1. Mix all ingredients together 2. Pipe to shape into small pillows 3. Leave to set up for an hour 4. Boil in salted water until the gnocchi starts to float. Dry off with paper towel 5. Pan fry in butter 6. Poach the pears in a stock syrup until soft and cool 7. When cool, dry off and cut into quarters 8. To cook for this dish fry the pears in hot butter and sugar until caramelised and finish with a splash of pontack to glaze the pears Venison Jus 1. Roughly chop and sweat the vegetables until lightly 38 NOVEMBER 2018

caramelised 2. Pour in the wine and reduce 3. Add the roasted venison bones, top up with chicken stock and simmer for 30 minutes 4. Take out the bones and pass through a muslin 5. Reduce by three quarters To Finish 1. Blanch the finely shredded savoy cabbage in boiling salted water for 2 minutes 2. Plunge into ice cold water 3. Drain and squeeze out the excess water 4. Re-heat in hot butter and season well 5. Pan fry the venison steaks in butter until caramelized all over, season and cook in the oven Gas 6 200 degrees C, for approx 12 minutes. 6. Rest for 8-10 minutes then slice and serve To serve 1. Place the buttered cabbage on the plate off centre, then on top put the sliced venison and fan, after place the caramelised pear glazed in pontack, butternut squash gnocchi, finally finish with the venison jus.

A Price Butchers of Holtspur Parade, Beaconsfield, occupied the shop from 1957 through to 2016. Deciding that the time had come to focus on other areas of his business, including the catering, BBQ and Hog Roasts, Derek decided back in 2016 that the time had come to close the shop. With the disappointment from loyal customers and the fact that actually, he still had time on his hands Derek chose to still run a butchers but rather than the traditional retails shop that we all recognise, more of a personalised service. Derek has been running the butchers this way, predominantly over social media and word of mouth ever since. Offering high quality products at heavily reduced prices due to minimal overheads Derek is bringing the locals of Beaconsfield the standards of meat that they have always enjoyed, at amazing prices. Derek’s years of experience mean that he knows the best places to source the meat products and the marinades that he uses. Selling traditional joints, aged English beef, English lamb and English pork as standard you can expect you can expect only the best. So, how about when you want that little variation to the norm? A variety of options are available for his clients, marinated lemon chicken, teriyaki chicken, hand-made pork skewers for the BBQ, handmade sausages and other seasonal

LOCAL FOOTBALL STAR SCORES WITH NATIONAL PUB AWARD

Little Missenden’s Crown Inn is named Britain’s ‘Best Country Pub’

T

he bible of Britain’s drinking houses, The Good Pub Guide, has named the Crown Inn in Little Missenden ‘Best Country Pub’ in its 2019 edition, published in September. With wife Carolyn, the former professional footballer, Trevor How, took over the Crown from his parents in 1993. Winning the ‘Best Country Pub’ title is a huge accolade for his family but this landlord is no stranger to the limelight. Trevor played under Graham Taylor during Watford’s glory days in the late 1970s (even joining the team singing backing vocals on an Elton John album) before going on to play for Wycombe Wanderers and

44 NOVEMBER 2018

Slough Town FC. Trevor How said: “What I loved most about my playing days was being part of teams at family clubs and now our little team at the Crown has come out on top in the Good Pub Guide. It’s just terrific and we are so, so, thrilled.” There’s been a pub on the same site for well over 250 years which has now been in Trevor’s family for almost a century - and he’s not its only sport star to have run the place. Before Trevor and Carolyn took up residence, the Chilterns gem was run for almost 30 years by his parents Doreen and Ron. That was after Ron’s own prestigious sporting career – winning the speedway National League Championship 5 times and qualifying for the World Finals eight times. Doreen How said: “It was hard work but we loved our time in the Crown and to think it’s now got a national award… well, I’ll tell you what - my Ron would be tickled pink and so proud of what Trevor and Carolyn have gone on to achieve.” Carolyn How said: “It’s not a big place or a fancy place but I’ve always thought it’s rather special that members of the same family have served behind the bar for so many years. This award is just as much for them and we’ll be raising a glass, or two, to all them.” The Crown Inn sits in one acre of beautiful countryside with a patio area at the back for lunch or a quiet drink. At the front there are benches for those who want to watch the world go by. While children are welcome to let off steam in the garden, inside you’ll find a traditional adults-only pub to savour: a brick cottage with red floor tiles and oak parquet, built-in wall seats, a few small tables and, in winter, an open fire. It has a well-earned local reputation for keeping excellent beers and there’s farm cider, several malt whiskies - and Pimms in summer. In 2008, the stable block next to the pub was converted to three bed & breakfast rooms. Traditional pub lunches are served on weekdays and Saturdays. Fiona Stapley, Editor of The Good Pub Guide said “The Crown in Little Missenden is the perfect little country pub. It’s run by long-serving licensees who genuinely care for both their pub and their customers - and it shows – and we get nothing but warm praise from our trustworthy readers who love the place. Up to four changing real ales and honest lunchtime-only food, spotlessly kept, friendly bars, an attractive sheltered garden and bedrooms in a converted barn; what more could you want?”

Long term hair extensions can actually help your natural hair flourish, as most of your colour can be achieved using hair extensions only.

Hair extensions don’t always have to translate to super long hair. Many women turn to extensions to supplement their own hair, and as a way to conceal over-processed and weaker sections. barrier from heat and styling and allowing you to create effortless styles with ease, underneath the extensions your natural hair will flourish. The micro-ring method is discreet, damage free and comfortable Micro-ring hair extensions are discreet, tiny rings that are used to apply the strands of hair extension hair to your natural locks, and they cause absolutely no damage when applied and removed correctly and maintained on time. Arabella Rose make each strand of hair individually and tailor make for each client for a natural blend and finish. Clients need to come back for maintenance on average every 3 months, and as long as they are cared for correctly the same hair can be use continuously, thus saving money in the long run. No more bad hair days Correct bad hair cuts or boost lifeless hair with cleverly concealed extensions in a matter of hours . Hair extensions are also great when trying to grow out a short hair style and getting past that awkward in between stage. Be a beautiful bride Whether it’s ‘strands’ or a full head you opt for, extensions are great for special occasions like weddings and also help to thicken out classic up do’s. Smart styling Taking care of your hair extensions as you would your own hair will ensure they stay soft and silky too and allow you to reuse the same hair time and time again . Look after your hair extensions and your natural hair by using your styling tools on lower settings. Do your family understand your legacy? I

n a world where technology is rapidly changing, and wealth and assets are becoming increasingly fragmented and difficult to define, managing your legacy and understanding the value of your family’s assets is not simple. Experts from Royds Withy King look at some common issues their clients encounter. Deanna Hurst, partner in Private Client, says, “Bereaved families I advise often have to deal with a fragmented estate where the executors are not clear on where or what assets there are and what their value is. Digital assets, collectables and online investments all contribute to a sometimes very complicated pot. Understandably, having a conversation with a family member of any age, about what their estate is made up of and how it is to be dealt with if they pass away, can be an uncomfortable and emotional one. If assets in an individual’s estate are not well documented, the issues resulting from this can cause family tensions and additional stress at what is already a difficult time.” Many people have passionate interests in

A girl’s best friend Choosing Your Diamond And Designing The Ring When choosing a diamond our customers are always given the opportunity to choose their favourite stone from a selection of at least five of the same size and quality that they are looking for. We explain in straightforward terms the characteristics of each one and help you fully understand what you are buying. Designing a beautiful setting for the selected diamond is as important as choosing the stone itself. We like to spend time and find out about your taste and the look that you prefer by sketching detail and proportion and also by showing examples of similar ideas in finished rings. We then go on to make CAD images and an exact wax model that can be tried on with the diamond superimposed onto it. This allows you to fully appreciate all aspects of the design before we finally hand make it in platinum or gold. The end result is a one-off custom made ring exactly as you imagined at a cost which needs be no more than buying a mass produced, often foreign made, ring off the shelf.

Buying On Line versa Your Expert Jeweller If you decide to buy your diamond online, according to your required grading, the price may well be attractive, but there is always a good reason for it and it is indeed a risky business for the buyer. By allowing us to help with that all important choice you will immediately have the advantage of our 70+ years’ experience and expertise in the diamond trade and at the same time receive our total support and commitment along the journey.

“By allowing us to help with that all important choice you will immediately have the advantage of our 70+ years’ experience and expertise in the diamond trade” Colours and Cuts Some of the most beautiful diamonds are the natural colours from soft pinks and blues to brilliant hues of purple and red. Graded from fancy light, fancy, fancy intense and fancy vivid. As the intensity of colour increases so does the value. Pink and red colours are produced when these diamonds have a mutation within their crystal lattice that alters the stones molecular structure. Blue diamonds are caused by the addition of boron, a very rare element within the earth whilst yellow diamonds have nitrogen incorporated into their 56 NOVEMBER 2018

carbon crystal structure. The purer colours of pink, blue and red are extremely rare and valuable and in their natural form an extremely finite source. The shape and character of your diamond is determined by the cut. By far the most popular is the round brilliant cut followed by the square modified brilliant or princess cut, then the cushion cut which can be square or oblong in shape with softly curved sides and corners. After those the oval cut, the emerald cut, the radiant cut also square or oblong, the marquise cut, pear shape and Asscher cut are all fairly similar in popularity. Emerald and baguette cuts are very different to most other diamonds in so much as they have fewer facets and they are step cut with cut corners for the emerald cut and full corners for the baguette. Whilst they do not sparkle as much as Brilliant or other similar cuts they have a very different and sophisticated look which is really attractive. They are also like mirrors and easily show any imperfections within. We would always recommend choosing a very clean stone when selecting these cuts. When choosing a fancy cut it is imperative to look at a really good selection of similar stones as they are even less predictable than round brilliant cuts. The certification does not tell about the variations of any particular shape For instance, an oval or marquise cut can be slightly long and skinny or short and fat, both of which can look very unattractive. Similarly a cushion cut which is only slightly heavily cut can look very small and the accompanying certificate could still rate the symmetry as ‘good’. Again this is where our expertise and experience will guide you through this minefield! A beautiful diamond is to cherish for life and then pass on to the next generation. Its beauty never diminishes, its value increases and it gives endless pleasure.

Dressed to thrill

“Once you have decided on the look you want to achieve, choosing the best accessories will help finish off your look”

70 NOVEMBER 2018

I

t’s that time of year again, you’re starting to think about the Christmas Party or New Year’s Eve event that you have been looking forward to for so long. Now, what are you going to wear? The classic black dinner suit is the obvious choice but not the only one. Regardless of your preference of Martini, shaken or stirred, there are not many gentlemen who can help feeling a bit like the James Bond when donning a tuxedo. Is your inspiration Connery’s white tuxedo, the black peak lapelled dinner suit worn by Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig’s navy shawl collared dress suit? Your options are almost endless. You can make your outfit as individual as you are. It is not necessarily just a case of picking the right dinner suit or tuxedo, you might not even choose to wear a suit at all. A velvet jacket with dress trousers, for example, can look just as sophisticated. Once you have decided on the look you want to achieve, choosing the best accessories will help finish off your look. The white shirt and black bow tie are normally peoples default option, but again they’re not the only choice. There are countless options available in dress shirts, ties, pocket squares and cufflinks. So, there is no reason why you have to conform to the conventional when you really want to dress to impress. After all, this outfit isn’t just for your eyes only. Andrew Gardner, The Tanyard, Tring Road, Wendover, Buckinghamshire HP22 6ND 01296 625488 www.andrewgardner.co.uk

Cosmetic breast surgery Mr David Crawford, Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeon

Mr David Crawford is one of our leading breast surgeons at Spire Thames Valley Hospital. If you would like to any discuss one of these procedures with him, simply book an appointment by calling us on 01753 665 404.

B

reasts change throughout a woman’s life time. They enlarge at puberty, during pregnancy and with weight-gain but can become empty and more ptotic (droopy) after breast feeding with significant weight-loss and due to the effects of aging and gravity. Breast augmentation (enlargement), breast uplift (mastopexy) and breast reduction account for most of the demand for this surgery. These, together with revision surgery following previous operations, correction of nipple inversion, removal of excess breast tissue, nipple areolar reduction and the removal of benign skin lesions or tattoos, account for the overwhelming majority of cosmetic breast procedures. Most of these procedures are performed to improve appearance. However, some of these techniques can be combined to correct conditions such as breast asymmetry or ‘tuberous’ breasts. According to BAAPS, breast implant surgery is the most common type of cosmetic surgery carried out in the UK. Breast implants have a long and proven safety record and are manufactured in a vast array of

72 NOVEMBER 2018

different shapes, sizes and volumes. The most commonly used implants worldwide are silicone breast implants. The outer layer, or shell of a modern implant is textured to try and prevent the formation of a ‘capsule’ and the silicone gel within the implants is cohesive, so will not run even if the implant is cut in half. The implants with the most safety data are a little more expensive than the cheapest possible implants, but safety is always recommended over cost. Selecting the correct implant for you is key to getting the best outcome from breast enlargement. The shape, feel, style and size of the implants have to be right for your body. Implants are most commonly inserted through a scar in the fold beneath each breast, but other techniques are available. Implants can be positioned beneath the breast tissue alone, or beneath the pectoralis muscles, and there are advantages and disadvantages to each implant position. It is important that you are able to work closely with your consultant to tailor the best possible plan for your needs. It is also important to realise that there is a significant chance you may require revision surgery throughout your lifetime to maintain the best possible results following breast augmentation. Some women chose to change their initial size, or may need additional surgery due to breast changes resulting from ageing, pregnancy or weight fluctuations. Breast lift or mastopexy, raises the position of the nipple on the chest wall without reducing breast size. This is achieved by tightening the skin of the breast through a variety of scar patterns. This alone can make the breasts appear ‘fuller’ and more youthful. Even after an operation, the breasts will continue to change and further surgery may be required. Before committing to this type of surgery, you should ensure that you have fully understood its limitations and acted to minimise potential complications. Thinking of having cosmetic surgery? Always check your consultant features on the GMC’s specialist register for Plastic Surgery and a full; member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS). Spire Thames Valley Hospital is now offering all patients a brand new, fixed price package for breast augmentation procedures. Using globally recognised Mentor implants, these implants can create your ideal breast shape with youthful firmness, whether your goal is a subtle change or a more dramatic difference. Subject to consultation, the procedure is performed as a day case, so usually you do not require an overnight stay and you can return home after surgery.

We offer two types of sedation, and will help you decide which type of sedation is right for you.

“Any concerns or worries you may have will disappear when you see our calm and relaxed practice”

What should I expect? When receiving sedation, you will be fully informed beforehand of any potential side effects and given advice to help you with your recovery. If you opt for sedation, you will need someone to act as an escort and take you home afterwards, and it is advisable to rest for the remainder of the day.

Miss Sherina Balaratnam (MBBS, MRCS, MSc (UCL)) is a fully qualified former NHS surgeon and cosmetic doctor with extensive plastic surgical training who has devoted the last nine years of her medical career to specialising in the latest non-surgical cosmetic treatment innovations. She is the Founder and Medical Director of the S-Thetics Clinic in Beaconsfield Old Town. As 1 of 3 just launch clinics in England and only 4 clinics globally, outside of the USA, we are now able to offer our patients EMSculpt, the world’s first device to simultaneously build muscle & reduce fat.

We asked her the questions you’ll want to know about this exciting new technology:

What is EMSculpt?

EMSculpt is the world’s 1st device to build muscle and burn fat using High-Intensity Focused Electro-Magnetic (HIFEM®) technology to penetrate through the skin to impact muscle tissue.

Why is EMSculpt so popular?

Existing non-surgical fat reduction treatments are precisely that, means of removing and safely reducing fat. But until now there has not been a device that can reduce fat AND treat and strengthen the underlying muscle.

What are the results?

For the abdomen treatment, an overall improvement of abdominal tone, strengthening of the abdominal muscles and a firmer abdomen. For the buttock treatment, you can expect to see an overall How does it work? strengthening, toning and firming of buttocks. EMSculpt works by inducing powerful muscle contractions not achievable through regular exercise. Known as supramaximal contractions, these trigger your muscles to adapt to these conditions. This results in the growth (‘Hypertrophy’) and multiplication (‘Hyperplasia’) of muscle fibres. A single 30 minute session creates 20,000 muscle contractions, so at a far higher level than could be achieved via regular exercise. These powerful contractions also safely induce an excess demand for energy, triggering a process known as apoptosis in fat cells, permanently destroying them.

S-THETICS MEDICAL AESTHETIC CLINIC

Marlborough House, 45 Wycombe End, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, HP9 1LZ 76 NOVEMBER 2018

“S-Thetics is a one-stop shop for world-class non surgical treatments for face and body.” – Brides Magazine Cosmetic Beauty Guide

“Miss Balaratnam’s super discreet S-Thetics clinic is based in a 200-year-old coach house just off Beaconsfield’s High Street: there’s no sign, it doesn’t look clinic-y, and high profile clients make the easy 35-minute drive for her seamless Botox and filler work, high-tech body treatments and skin programmes.” – Daily Telegraph, Olivia Falcon’s Black Book of Names to Know

Does it work?

EMSculpt has launched with both a US F.D.A. (‘Food and Drug Administration’) clearance and 7 published, independent clinical studies. These studies have been conducted using MRI, Ultrasound, CT Scans and tissue histology and all the data is publicly available. These results showed an average fat reduction of 19%, a 16% increase in muscle mass and a patient satisfaction rate of 96%, based on over 200 patients, following the protocol of x4 treatments across a 2-week period. This is not a beauty device – each applicator has an intensity of ~2 Tesla. When you consider a typical hospital grade MRI scanner has an intensity of ~1.5 – 3.0 Tesla, we really are talking about a powerful, medical grade technology.

Is it safe?

“When it comes to looking good and feeling great, Sherina Balaratnam is a name you’ll want to know. A fully qualified surgeon with a background in reconstructive surgery, she’s made it her business to master the latest non-surgical cosmetic treatment innovations. Literally.” – Tatler 2018 Cosmetic Surgery and Beauty Guide

Focus on…

MEN’S HEALTH This month we ask Your Doctor’s Dr Riccardo Di Cuffa to answer your questions about men’s health and offer us the very latest advice.

Q. The advice on how much alcohol I should drink is confusing. For example, is red wine good for you? What is the latest advice? A: Men and women should have no more than 14 units a week, meaning one or two glasses of wine or beer a day. However, it is strongly advised that you don’t drink all your alcohol units in one day and that you also have alcohol-free days. Red wine does contain antioxidants which may help prevent coronary artery disease which can lead to heart attacks, however, there are much better ways to achieve this. For example, exercising regularly, not smoking and having a balanced diet with lots of vegetables and good fiber will help prevent heart problems.

the best ways you can.

Q. At what age am I potentially no longer fertile and does it really make a difference if I wear briefs or boxers? A: A man’s fertility starts decreasing around the age of 40 due to a reduction in good quality sperm count but men continue to produce millions of sperm every day all through their life. Research has shown that there is no impact on a man’s fertility if they wear boxers or briefs. That is a bit of an old wives’ tale.

Q. What can I do about erectile dysfunction? A: Erectile problems are very common in men over 40 and don’t only affect an individual physically but emotionally too. It is best to be honest with yourself and your partner and to go to see your GP to allow them to assess the causes of it. A healthy lifestyle such as the being the right weight, eating a healthy diet, stopping smoking, taking enough exercise and reducing stress and anxiety are all key pillars to helping protect against erectile problems. Erectile issues are usually very treatable.

Q. As a man what are the most important things I should do to stay healthy? A: The most important factors are maintaining a healthy diet full of fruit and vegetables, good proteins and lots of fiber and being a healthy weight, getting around seven to eight hours of quality sleep a night, being physically active with 150 minutes of exercise a week and not smoking. It is also very important to look after your mental health by reducing your stress levels and enjoying life with friends and family. If you do all of these things you are protecting yourself from disease in 78 NOVEMBER 2018

Q. When do I have to be conscious about prostate issues and when do I first start getting checked and what does it involve? A: Men should start having prostate checks from the age of 50 if they are not at increased risk, but if they are at higher risk of getting prostate cancer then they should start checking at the age of 40 onwards. The most common tests are: a urine test, a prostate specific antigen blood test (PSA) and a digital rectal examination. Common symptoms of prostate problems include an increased need to urinate, straining whilst you urinate and a feeling that you haven’t completely emptied your bladder.

Q. How often should I go to my GP for a routine check? A: If you are aged between 40-74 and haven’t had a stroke or heart issues, it is recommended to have a routine check at least every three years to ascertain whether there are any issues arising before they develop into something more serious. The best advice I can give any man (or woman) is to be proactive about their health. Prevention is always better than cure. 0330 088 2020. www.your-doctor.co.uk

Vitamin C: the key to radiant, glowing skin All Year-long D on’t we all love the warm feeling of the summer? The sun’s rays might feel lovely but they can be tremendously harmful to our skin. It can damage the deep layers of the skin, leading to premature ageing or even dangers such as skin cancer. Although other extrinsic factors such as free radicals, severe physical and psychological stress, alcohol intake, poor nutrition and environmental pollution contribute to skin damage and ageing, sun exposure accounts to 80% of the visible signs of ageing on skin. During the summer when there is an increase in sun exposure and free radical activity is at its highest, topical application of Vitamin C can help your skin get the antioxidants it needs to battle free radicals from sun damage, adding photo- and antiinflammatory protection and preventing ultraviolet immunosuppression. Autumn can be aggressive to your skin, changes in the temperature can upset your skin complexion resulting in dry and blotchy skin. Vitamin C skincare can help to protect and brighten and give your skin the strength to battle through winter. How does Vitamin C work within your skin? Normally, skin contains vitamin C which is essential co-factor for collagen synthesis. Collagen is an important structural protein for a healthy and toned complexion as it holds cells together and strengthens the skin. Vitamin C deficiency is characterized by skin fragility and impaired wound healing. High concentration of vitamin C in the skin provides a number of benefits to skin health. Studies show that topical vitamin C can penetrate the skin and fight free radical damage caused by 80 NOVEMBER 2018

the environment, helps to fade pigmentation, stop inflammation and repair tired skin complexions.

What type of Vitamin C should you be using? There are several different types of vitamin C products including L-ascorbic acid, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl palmitate and retinyl ascorbate. Although all of them may offer some skin benefit L-ascorbic acid is considered to be the most favourable as it helps to boost collagen production, prevents photo-ageing, smooths and firms the skin. In addition, it has great amount of scientific research surrounding its benefits. The concentration of the vitamin C is another important factor to consider. Maximum skin absorption occurs at 20% strength, which means quicker and better results. However, for some skin types it might cause irritation. Vitamin C are available in form of serums, cream and transdermal patches. Of these, serums usually contain active vitamin C. Before you invest on any serum consult your skin specialist for advice. Vitamin C can be combine with anti-ageing skin care products. The images above illustrate

the results after 3 months of Obagi Vitamin C combined with medical skin care products. Social words: Dr Ravi Gill

- Chartered Health Psychologist

W

e’ve heard this term being used more frequently but what is it? Social Anxiety is the fear of social situations that involve interactions with other people. Individuals who experience social anxiety feel an intense and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and of being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work, personal life or other activities. Simply put people with social anxiety don’t want to stand out; they want to hide in the background.

Common feelings experienced by those with social anxiety: • Self-conscious – feeling that they have been ‘placed under a microscope and everyone is judging negatively’ • Fear of being centre of attention – everyone is looking at them • Hesitation, lack of confidence – holding themselves back due to fear of disapproval • Low mood over perceived failures – replaying past events over and over • Hypersensitive to criticism and evaluation • Trapped in a vicious cycle Social anxiety can be limited to only one type of situation – such as fear of public speaking or performing in public – or an individual can experience symptoms whenever they are around others. Social situations which may cause an individual to feel anxious include: meeting new people, being observed doing an activity, using public transport, going to parties – the fear of negative evaluation in specific social situations usually results in the individual avoiding those situations. When in these situations a person may experience symptoms such as blushing, sweating, stuttering, nausea, ‘mind going blank’; as these symptoms are quite visible they heighten the fear of others judging them creating a negative vicious cycle. How to overcome social anxiety: • Self-help – Set yourself objective goals in social situations – when people feel anxious they tend

82 NOVEMBER 2018

to disqualify positives and negatively view their performance. Objective goals may help to manage your anxiety levels for example, in a group setting set yourself the task of making three comments, say good morning to two strangers on your to work. • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a frequently used for the treatment of social anxiety. The main aim of the therapy is to reduce anxiety by changing the way you think, feel and behave in social situations. For example, avoiding social situations prevents the individual overcoming their fears and does not allow them to build effective coping mechanisms to help them deal with similar situations. • Exposure therapy –list, in order of severity, various situations that cause you to feel anxious; challenge yourself to put yourself into these situations starting off with the easiest and slowly work your way up. Ask friends and family members to accompany you. Alternatively if you feel overwhelmed or unable to overcome this issue alone, consider seeking professional help. It is important to understand that treatment for social anxiety is individually tailored, there is no one plan that suits all. Psychologists aim to work with the individual to determine which treatment plan will be most effective; adjustments to the plan may need to be made if the individual feels that something isn’t working for them. Overall the prospects for overcoming social anxiety are good. Call us now on 0207 717 9022 info@buckinghamshirepsychology.co.uk www.buckinghamshirepsychology.com

Take the floor

To put on a fantastic floor show in your kitchen start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards

VINYL FLOORING

Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most cost effective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through - those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner.

STONE OR SLATE Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you.

LAMINATE This is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, 86 NOVEMBER 2018

this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer.

HARDWOOD A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again.

CERAMIC TILES A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating. Choosing your kitchen flooring is as crucial as choosing the overall theme for your kitchen, so consult a specialist designer for further advice.

Designers have revealed their new decor schemes for autumn and winter. Gabrielle Fagan selects her three favourites.

Autumn Style A

utumn is the time of year when nature changes it’s colours, and thanks to the new home collections, it’s easy to ring the changes indoors too. Choose from sumptuous florals, a cool Nordic theme that celebrates easy, stylish comfort, or full-fat maximalism, with its emphasis on luxury and individuality. Be inspired - whether it’s a total revamp or just a refresh with a few new accessories - so that your rooms are fashionably kitted out for the seasons to come...

Make magic with moody blooms “Escape the everyday and saturate your home with glorious jewel tones this autumn. There are so many ways to use them - in Oriental, deco, and bold floral prints - I love that it all feels a bit fantasy,” enthuses Lois Vincent, home designer at House of Fraser. “You can up the glamour quota by mixing in a few gilded accessories; after all, who doesn’t need a flamingo candlestick in their life?” DECOR TIP: Rich plum and berry shades are the perfect autumnal palette for a cosy feel. If you don’t want to go full-on floral, choose dusky pink and warm neutrals for a backdrop and then layer up with

92 NOVEMBER 2018

petal-rich accessories, from throws to bed linen.

Conjure calm chic spaces “Simple, minimal and layered - soft crafted neutrals and materials are set against stripped back rustic woods for this calm, tranquil look,” says Karen Thomas, head of design for Home at Marks & Spencer. “This palette of ‘Calming Neutrals’ is inspired by the change in seasons, and evokes a restful and relaxing feel for the home. As we move into autumn, we celebrate the urge to nest and stay indoors. Layer soft knits and textures for a casual lived-in feel, and use clean lines and smooth surfaces of cool marble and craft glazes to accessorise your living space.” DECOR TIP: If you’re reworking your entire living space, keep to a palette of pale grey, wood and white for walls, floor and furniture. Declutter to create a pared-back base, and if you want to warm the scheme, add accents of yellow or green in accessories or plants.

Decorate to the max “We expect maximalism to be one of the breakthrough looks for autumn and winter, and we’re already seeing people investing in bold, bright pieces for their homes,” says Fionnuala Johnston, senior designer at John Lewis. “Maximalism is not necessarily about overcrowding a space, but choosing to be bold by showcasing your own unique style in a creative way. Carefully considered mixing and matching of colours, prints and textures is key to achieving the look, and it’s the perfect opportunity to layer designs and blend references. “A good example would be combining a contemporary drinks trolley with tropical, vintage wallpaper, for a refined glamour that celebrates old and new style.” Designer Abigail Ahern has embraced the luxe look and made it her own, with her richly designed animal-inspired Edition homeware for Debenhams. DECOR TIP: Floor-to-ceiling curtains and reflective surfaces, such as mirrored glass and metalllics, contribute to the luxe look and create an atmosphere of elegance. A successful home will reflect your personality and taste and contain pieces that make you smile - don’t be afraid to experiment.

“If you’re reworking your entire living space, keep to a palette of pale grey, wood and white for walls, floor and furniture”

brilliantly sociable living situation led Sarah and Anthony White to contact Origin to finally build the swimming pool they had always dreamed of. After selling a company, the Whites were able to purchase the two neighbouring houses and have friends come to live in each one. Knocking down the garden barriers made it clear that all that was missing from this otherwise ideal set up was a bespoke pool for them all to enjoy. Keen to find a reputable company that could manage the project from start to finish, the couple got in touch with Origin, the UK’s leading luxury indoor pool company, who quickly got to work on creating the couple’s beautiful indoor pool and spa.

The Right Time Not only did the White’s housing situation now perfectly suit the project, but the timing also could not have been better. Sarah explains: “We have three children; two of them have recently finished rather stressful exams. The new addition to the garden provides the perfect space for them to relax and have fun with friends every evening. I quite often look out of the kitchen window to see the lights turned on and the kids having a whale of a time, it’s absolutely wonderful.” 98 NOVEMBER 2018

The new addition is not only perfect for entertaining, but for exercise too, and Sarah now begins every day by swimming 30 lengths.

inspired to contact our friend who landscaped the whole area. It’s just brilliant – the garden has been completely transformed into something communal for all our neighbouring friends and family.”

Life with Origin

Revolutionised Space From the first ideas all the way through to the final build, the Whites had the full attention of the experts from Origin. The couple had regular meetings with the team, whilst the builders on site ensured they were kept informed with every single decision that was made. Sarah comments on the building process: “Origin were great with advising on how to incorporate a spa and a long pool, and even invited us to look at three of their other pools for inspiration. We experienced the flexibility of the service as they quickly reconfigured the plans to meet our new requests. “The space has been entirely revolutionised. What used to be an area of shrubs and trees is now completely useable. After the build, we were

Sarah and Anthony are delighted with their new pool and continue to be impressed with Origin’s services, even now the pool is complete. “Origin has been brilliant with the aftersales follow-up and we were not left alone with the new responsibility of looking after a pool. We chose to opt for Origin’s aftercare package; every month an engineer visits to carry out routine maintenance and check pool chemistry levels. Every query we’ve had has been answered immediately.” Origin has over 35 years’ experience building award-winning swimming pools. The company can work with you to build your dream pool house, just like they did for the White family. To speak to the Origin experts please contact 01895 453996.

3D FLOORING

ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH?

I

t is turning the heads of wealthy homeowners who have a spare £20,000 or more in their back pocket, and want to create a unique interior like no other. Rich property owners are always looking to outdo each other, and this is one way to achieve just that and get the wow factor

“Instead of being a background, the floor becomes the main detail”

100 NOVEMBER 2018

We know there are numerous ways to add personality to your home – but 3d flooring is certainly more daring than just block colour feature walls and novelty wallpaper. You can literally transform your floors into incredible works of art. The astonishing images appear life-like even when viewed from multiple angles. It’s not just a picture, it’s a large-scale art object, which fundamentally changes the idea of what flooring can do. Much like the 3D street art you see in major cities, it has now been brought into the home to much effect! Instead of being a background, the floor becomes the main detail. Automatically, all furnishings, walls and even lighting become a background for the 3D image. The wide range of colours and modern technologies allow the creation of unique self-levelling floors with panorama or 3D pictures, created by designers according to your wishes and suitable for any interior. Choose your design carefully though… a 3D floor that gives the appearance of the floor collapsing from under you, is not for the fainthearted or those with a nervous disposition! The technology of manufacturing 3D selflevelling floors requires highly skilled professionals. A highquality and properly installed resin floor will delight you with its beautiful appearance, practicality, originality and uniqueness for many years to come. They are also perfect for your child’s bedroom or playroom, your little one won’t be able to contain their excitement at seeing such a creation.

EVANS GROUP - 70TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY

2018 marks the 70th year anniversary for the Evans Group, a family run plumbing and heating company spanning 3 generations of the same family.

O

ver the decades, throughout the property booms and also the crashes, the Evans Group has successfully adapted to the industry. It has seized every opportunity to evolve and remain an active and innovative partner for its new build developer and commercial clients, as well as serving thousands of homeowners, landlords and tenants within the local community.

History overview The family run business, established by Ray Evans in 1948, has gone to great lengths to stay current and relevant. Ray Evans started out as a local plumber working in Burnham, Berkshire. After several years Ray received an opportunity to provide services for a new build developer, Laing Homes and this was to be a major turning point. By 1978 R.G.Evans had grown into a small plumbing and heating business providing specialist services to a portfolio of new build developer clients. R.G.Evans became a limited company operating across Buckinghamshire and Berkshire with a team of 5 employees, which included Ray’s 2 sons Martyn and Andrew. In 1987 Martyn Evans took over R.G.Evans from his father, and further developed the company with the support of his brother Andy and loyal staff. The company continued to grow through building positive working relationships with existing clients and gaining new clients through its well-founded reputation. By 2000 R.G.Evans had set up a design company called Evans Design, which would support the clients of R.G.Evans with pre-contract designs and blueprints. It was in 2009 J.F.Heppelthwaite became a part of the Evans Group to provide dedicated aftercare services to the groups new build developer clients. Gary Evans, a 3rd generation family member of the Evans family and son of Martyn Evans, became Managing Director of Heppelthwaite, with Catherine Heppelthwaite, the original owner becoming Operations Manager and she remains an invaluable part of the company. Heppelthwaite, now known as Heppelthwaite the Red Van Plumbers, has continued to provide a comprehensive range of domestic and commercial plumbing and heating services to thousands of 102 NOVEMBER 2018

Transitional Trends

Entering autumn doesn’t have to mean going full-on winter mode at home. Gabrielle Fagan shows how you can bridge the seasonal gap in style.

I

t’s ‘transition time’ in decor as well as in wardrobes - that period where summer’s still lingering and autumn’s just starting to show its colours. But just as we’re not quite ready to ditch all our light cotton clothes and embrace woolly coats, similarly we don’t want to rush our rooms into a full-on winter look until we have to. If you don’t want to let go of that sunny colour palette however, you could celebrate an ‘Indian Summer’ indoors, with embroidered, bohemian textiles and exotic accessories. On the other hand, if you want to gently move into a warmer, ward-off-the- chills look, simply switch up your accessories and treat yourself to tactile, cuddle-up textures in throws and cushions.

Keep the summer vibe alive “The latest trend for global fusion, where the colours, shapes and textures from different cultures unite and clash, is a look that works well through all the seasons, with its rich, sunny colour palette,” says Philip Watkin, design director for furniture company, DFS. “For the Salsa range, we visited The Design Library in London, where an array of beautiful Indian wedding blankets immediately caught our eye. We took the traditional patterns from these blankets 106 NOVEMBER 2018

and reworked them with punchy, vibrant colours, to keep the look feeling authentic yet modern and lend the range an Indian and Moroccan inspired twist.” The coloured Salsa range includes the Salsa Maxi Sofa, £849, Salsa Oval Footstool, £199 and Salsa Accent Chair, £349.

Cushion the blow If you’re lamenting the passing of summer, indulging yourself in new accessories in a different colour palette could lift your spirits as well as your decor. Cushions can transform not just a sofa but the whole feel of a room, and are such an affordable way to refresh a space. Combine soft neutral shades - enlivened by a burst of vivid colour for a throw - for a subtle and warming effect.

Play and display You can still enjoy the glow of thinking about happy summer times - if your memory’s jogged by a display of souvenirs collected on your travels and jaunts. Make a statement by showing them off on a display unit, or simply group a small collection on a side table or shelf. Ideally, change objects regularly to keep the display interesting. Following a colour or texture theme will ensure the effect is easy on the eye.

Creating a

Stylish Bathroom

Bathroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal.

A STYLISH BATH The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look.

THE SHOWER OPTION Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness.

AN APPEALING BASIN Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone 108 NOVEMBER 2018

who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household.

LUXURY TOUCHES Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll holder and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A wellchosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.
