Grace’s Flag by Camilla Shelley Collect your FREE ‘Flag up my Hero Kit’ from the River & Rowing Museum

T

he school summer holidays. Long, sunny days, exploring the natural world, bike rides, trips to the beach and the park? Not always, and certainly not necessarily with the challenges which this year has presented. Many of us have not been able to get away this summer or have used up all of our creative inspiration during lockdown. Whether you work in an office, work from home or are a stay at home parent, it’s always handy to have practical ideas to do together as a family.

What better than your local community project? Which is why the team at the Museum is offering this inspirational craft activity – and it’s FREE! All you have to do is pick up a ‘Flag up my Hero’ Kit from the foyer. Helen Cook, Head of Education at the Museum explains “‘Flag up my Hero’ is a celebration of Henley’s heroes and a way to open to up the communication with your family about how they have felt during lockdown. Who has inspired them, what helped them through the home schooling and missing out on after school clubs and seeing their friends. Whether you have a family or not, it’s also good to reflect on the last few months and say ‘thank you’ to whoever has helped you.” Now you can create a flag to thank them. 18 SEPTEMBER 2020

A time capsule for 2020 The kits are mini time capsules, to help capture a moment in time and represent the positivity of 2020. It’s been quite a year and one we’ll all remember, whatever your age. The flags will then be flown from the Museum in the autumn, playing on the nautical tradition of boats ‘dressed overall’ – when boats are decorated with flags and pennants for a special occasion. The flags will be displayed in the autumn in celebration of all that is Henley for visitors and locals alike to enjoy. If you can, pre-register on the Museum’s website to ensure that your kit is waiting for you on arrival at the Museum but, if not, then simply pick up your free kit from the foyer in the Museum, which is now open 10am - 4pm, Thurs – Mon.

The story of Grace’s flag: “I started my daughter Grace’s flag while she was revising for her final law exams. Since lockdown she and the rest of the university students dispersed and had their lectures on line. She worked incredibly hard and at one point she visited when I had cut out various shapes of fabric. It was relaxing for her to arrange them and to chat about the fabrics – reminders of our clothes and various braids – and I decided to dedicate the flag to her!” Camilla Shelley.

“Flag up my Hero’ is a celebration of Henley’s heroes and a way to open to up the communication with your family about how they have felt during lockdown”

THE DETAILS For details on how to register for ‘Flag up my Hero’ and create a flag in celebration of your very own lockdown hero, go to: rrm.co.uk/about/community/ flag-up-my-hero. With special thanks to Lady Sew & Sew.

What happens to the Matrimonial Home upon Divorce?

I

n divorce proceedings where spouses are unable to agree terms, the family court has the power to decide upon an appropriate financial settlement which meets the parties’ needs. For many separating couples a significant part of their financial settlement will be concerned with the matrimonial home. The matrimonial home is often the most valuable asset available to the parties and of course, everyone needs somewhere to live; the family court will be concerned to provide a home for each spouse. However, it is the welfare of any children and ensuring they have a suitable home which will be the primary concern for the judge. The court is obliged to consider all circumstances of a case and certain statutory factors. As a result, the court can find itself in a difficult position as it tries to achieve multiple aims that may be incompatible. When it comes to the matrimonial home, the court has the power to do a number of things, including: • Ordering that the property be transferred to one of the spouses, with or without the payment of a lump sum to buy out the other. • Ordering the house to be sold so that the proceeds can be divided between the parties in whatever percentage is appropriate in the circumstances. • Creating a trust in connection with the matrimonial home.

Transfer of the property The court can order the matrimonial home to be transferred into either spouse’s name and such a transfer could involve the receiving spouse paying the other a lump sum to buy out their interest in that property. A transfer could be part of a clean break settlement or it may be that the house is transferred to a party in lieu of any ongoing maintenance payments. When considering whether a transfer is a viable option, issues such as the amount of equity in the property, the parties’ respective mortgage raising capacities and ability to keep up with the monthly repayments will be relevant.

Selling the matrimonial home Another option would be to sell the matrimonial home. When considering whether this is the most appropriate course of action, the court will consider a range of issues including whether there is sufficient equity in the home to provide two 20 SEPTEMBER 2020

new homes for the separating parties, the parties’ respective abilities to raise a mortgage and when there are minor children involved, the impact a move may have on their wellbeing and how best to minimise any potential disruption.

Trust of land There are certain situations where this is the most appropriate option. For example, where a house needs to be provided for one of the parties until the children conclude their education and there are not the financial resources available to achieve this another way. One such arrangement is known as a Mesher order. This involves the matrimonial home being sold and the equity released upon the occurrence of a specific event, such as the youngest child reaching the age of 18 or leaving full time education, be it secondary education or university. Another option would be a Martin order. This involves the matrimonial home being sold upon the death of the party living there. Orders of this nature can be tricky to manage. For example, there are the issues associated with one party having to wait for their share of the equity being released and available to them. However, there are some circumstances where this is the only option. Whether the financial settlement is agreed between the parties directly, or directed by the court, the terms of that settlement should be incorporated into a formal court order. Is it possible to have an amicable divorce after lockdown?

T

here has been a steep rise in the number of couples wanting to divorce since lockdown was enforced. Even for happily married couples, the intensity of spending a lot of time together can cause difficulties. But for couples, who were already struggling or who had grown apart and were living more independent lives, this period has been particularly challenging. Fran Hipperson, family partner at B P Collins, advises on how couples can have a more amicable separation. It is important when dealing with any separation that both parties try to understand each other’s perspective. Remember that whilst one partner may have reached a decision that the relationship is over, their spouse may not. The initial days and weeks of a separation can be extremely distressing especially if it came as a shock. Remember that your partner may not have reached the same stage as you and may need time to process the separation, so that they can move forward constructively, which will ultimately help resolve matters more amicably. Some separating may feel that counselling or therapy is beneficial either individually or as a couple (not necessarily with the aim of saving the marriage). It can be immensely helpful, both to the formal process and relations going forward, to have a discussion in a neutral environment in which each person can air how they feel and why. It is important to keep communicating with each other. Where a couple have children, they are likely to need to talk about the arrangements for the children for years to come and keeping discussions polite and constructive will make that easier. It is also vital that where arrangements need to be agreed with regards to children, that parents avoid using the pandemic as an excuse to limit the time children spend with their other parent, although this will be less common now that lockdown measures have been relaxed and

22 SEPTEMBER 2020

it is hoped will only be relevant for those that have particular vulnerabilities (themselves, the children or a close family member). Seek legal advice. Understanding what a workable and fair outcome regarding financial matters would be, and arrangements for any children, is vital and will enable a couple to have an open discussion and hopefully reach a resolution. Be wary of a lawyer who promises you the earth or who always agrees with what you say. While you need to remain true to your own values and principles, a good lawyer will often challenge your ideas as a critical friend and provide clear (and sometimes firm) guidance and advice. Establish the facts. This is one of the first tasks and is intended to ascertain the resources and assets of the relationship and to understand all the issues that might impact upon the resolution of matters. A lawyer will provide guidance and advice about an appropriate outcome based on those facts, taking into account relevant legislation, case law and guidance and their own experience. Be honest. Do not play games, as this could lead to significant amounts in legal fees and delay resolution. If you’re thinking about divorce since you’ve been in lockdown, taking advice early on will mean that you are aware of the court processes and the different stages involved and the right lawyer will give you guidance and advice about the appropriate outcome and the steps that need to be taken. This removes some of the uncertainty and provides parameters for settlement discussions. Some people prefer not to use a solicitor for the entire process, however advice at an early stage will enable you to know where you stand before you progress discussions and it is vital that any agreement reached is recorded in a consent order, which is approved by the court as this provides certainty and finality.

“It is important when dealing with any separation that both parties try to understand each other’s perspective”

The Lifestyle Show

O

n August Bank Holiday Monday a surprising new event took place. The Lifestyle Show – the brainchild of MJB Entertainment Group. A small event company with only three members of staff who decided they weren’t going to beaten by the curse of 2020. With an event industry in tatters, they were inspired by the overwhelming show of support from the local community. Clapping every Thursday for the NHS, watching streets of people coming together to stand united. “It’s a powerful message that when the entire world is struggling with fear, anxiety and loss, we stood up and supported each other. Something I’ve never witnessed in my lifetime” Bill Blenkarn, Company Owner. So they decided to give back. The Lifestyle Show -Bucks was aimed at small local independent businesses. Some of which only had online platforms and therefore hit even harder without the financial grants afforded to companies during lockdown. Having recently partnered with Wycombe Wanderers Football Club their first thought was the huge potential they have there for outdoor events. They decided to put on a show for stallholders to showcase their incredible talents and positioned the show as free entry for the public and free parking.

30 SEPTEMBER 2020

“The Lifestyle Show -Bucks was aimed at small local independent businesses”

With the support of local suppliers and sponsors, they produced a well presented, socially distanced event. With one thousand new visitors to the stadium who got to enjoy an array of food stands, locally crafted gin, beautiful handmade creations and luxury goods, the show was a huge success. A one-way system ensured the public stayed safe and the stallholders enjoyed the footfall from everyone that entered the show. “Once the show was in full swing, we armed ourselves with £100 and decided to buy as much as we could from the exhibiting stands. It was equally important for us to spend with these businesses as well as giving them a platform to promote themselves” Lauren Bell Event Organiser “The feedback from the public has been overwhelming. We are so grateful to everyone that came. We are delighted to announce that the Lifestyle Show will be returning for Christmas, so stay tuned for more details!” Lucie Hone Event Organiser.

EDUC ATION

THORPE: Moment In History

By Nicholas Pietrek, Headmaster

H

ow we have responded to the recent events with the lockdown of schools has helped to define Thorpe House. We have always been an aspirational school, looking to the future and believing that there is no such thing as failure, only lessons to be learned as we prepare our pupils for the world of tomorrow. It would be all too easy for us to say that we should just write off the last few months but that is simply not our way. Instead, it has been an opportunity for us to see how we can be pioneers, pupils and teachers alike. Like it or not, it is a harsh truth that education has languished behind other developments in society for far too long. It is a terrible irony that whilst schools are supposed to be preparing children for tomorrow’s world, they are barely keeping up with today’s world! For the vast majority of schools little has really changed since you and I were at school. It may well be that the some of the Maths and Science that used to be taught at A Level is now being taught at GCSE but education has to have much more than just an academic focus and so much else is being overlooked. In the last three years alone, we have been confronted with huge political and societal changes that demand a very different way of looking at the world and accompanying skill sets. We talk about being global citizens but if you asked your child how their school was preparing them for that role, what would they say? During our period of lockdown, our focus was first on the well-being of the pupils. Unlike many other Independent Schools that reacted to the lockdown by just following their curriculum online without change, we researched carefully what had worked and not worked in other parts of the world that had already been confronted by COVID-19,

48 SEPTEMBER 2020

looking particularly at Hong Kong. Whilst the initial reaction of one of our parents was “we are not in Hong Kong”, the attitude quickly softened when the “chat” with parents at other schools revealed the intense pressure that other children were being put under and the strain of being in front of a computer screen for the best part of 7 hours a day before they even started their homework - which also had to be done on a computer! Instead we focused on intensive online teaching (real teaching, not just setting work to be done remotely!) in the morning with a range of different tasks in the afternoon, utilising Artificial Intelligence platforms which could provide a bespoke educational experience for our boys, alongside pastoral catch up sessions with tutors and a fitness programme put on by our Games staff, our very own team of Joe Wicks’! It was a balanced and measured programme and it put the child first. The outcome – we are fully up to speed with all of our curriculum teaching and, judging by the personal reflections that the pupils wrote for their reports, we have a very contented pupil body. We have learnt a lot in the last few months about what is important and how we are going to continue to do things differently in September. Our GCSE programme focuses on 9 GCSEs but alongside that runs our Enrichment programme that looks at Great Speeches from History, Psychology, Current Affairs and Politics, Cookery, First Aid and Life Skills, as well as achieving further qualifications in Mandarin and doing the HPQ which fosters the pupils’ natural curiosity and enables them to research and present on a topic of their choosing, allowing them genuine independence in their learning. In the following year we will also be working with local charities and in the process learning about event management, acquiring business acumen, understanding how to use social media positively and, most importantly, giving something of ourselves to the wider community. These are the types of offerings that will genuinely prepare our children for tomorrow’s world. If you would like to come and visit Thorpe House, you will always be welcome. It is an exciting school and we would be delighted to show you what we are doing to prepare our pupils for tomorrow’s world. For latest Open Day information please visit thorpehouse.co.uk

11+ Prep – The What, When and How? What is the 11+? The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (better known as the Eleven Plus or 11+ exam) is a selective entrance examination for grammar schools in the area. It consists of two 45-minute papers with a short break in between. A standardised test score of 121 must be achieved to qualify for entry to a Bucks grammar school. This score is calculated by age-standardising the results in the three areas tested (verbal, maths and nonverbal) and then adding them together, weighting them 50%, 25% and 25% respectively. Grammar school places are then offered to students in line with the admissions policy of each school. When should my child start preparing? Ideally, at least one year or, for a more relaxed approach, two or even three years in advance. Although this sounds like a significant commitment, exam candidates must tackle challenging maths and English questions, as well as feel confident with a large variety of verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills and techniques. Allowing plenty of preparation time makes an intensive process far less stressful, as well as more rewarding; the earlier pupils begin preparation, the sooner they will enjoy improved confidence, ability and academic performance. Nevertheless, all preparation at whatever stage is helpful, both to a successful exam and, more widely, to the core skills required to succeed academically. With the postponement of the exam this year, some parents may consider beginning preparation during the final countdown weeks. Go for it! There is still time to boost confidence, knowledge and skills in time for the exam. How can I help my child to prepare? The main decision that concerns parents is whether to ‘go it alone’ with practice books at home or opt for a tuition course. The former may appeal in terms of cost and other practical concerns, such as when to fit in yet another afterschool activity! However, it is important to consider the extent of the material to be covered and how confident you are that you will be able to maintain the discipline and motivation required to take on such a task. If you do take this route, look out for workshops, courses and mock experiences offered by tuition providers; these are an excellent support to home-learning, offering expert knowledge, insights and crucial tips that your child may not be aware of. 50 SEPTEMBER 2020

For parents who prefer to trust to expertise, a tuition course offers specialist teaching alongside a sociable and engaging way to learn. Having fun makes learning much more effective and working with a group of peers can be an important source of support. Whilst some parents fear that group tuition means their child will not get the individual attention they need, small group teaching allows a tailored approach, including one to one assistance when it is needed. For many parents, booking a tuition course is the best way to feel certain that their child’s preparation is comprehensive, expertly delivered and fully supported. What should preparation cover? The Bucks 11+ test includes a broad range of potential question types and, whilst much of the maths and English content should be taught at school, specific question types, exam strategies and speed-working techniques are not. Strong vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation skills are vital, as well as excellent knowledge of the Year 5 maths syllabus. Candidates must also have a firm grasp of the various verbal and non-verbal reasoning techniques, which are not typically covered at school but can account for up to 50% of the paper. Need a little help? Flying Start Tuition is an award-winning tuition company offering classes for children from year one through to GCSEs, including their popular Eleven Plus programmes. Classes run throughout the year at their main centre in Chesham and at their satellite centres in Amersham, Berkhamsted, Jordans Village and Little Chalfont.

THE BEST START I n 2014, we formed an alliance with Merchant Taylors’ to create, for the first time in the Northwood area, a through school for boys aged 3 to 18. This has generated much excitement in the local community and beyond, and has enabled us to provide a seamless education from prep school through to senior school. Our Pre-Prep department, for 3 to 7 year old boys, is a vibrant and dynamic part of our school, where the pupils are educated by professional staff that provide a nurturing environment in which each pupil is valued for himself. We pride ourselves on instilling values, such as compassion and respect, and learning dispositions, such as perseverance and independence, at the same time as ensuring the highest standards of academic achievements. If you come to visit our school, you will see happy and confident children who are excited by the stimulating curriculum that we provide. Through these aims, we believe that education is

about promoting intellectual curiosity in which children are motivated by and fully involved in their own learning. mtpn.org.uk

Rainbow nails:

This season’s hottest mani trend Why settle for one nail polish shade when you can have five? Katie Wright finds out more.

N

ot that long ago, the idea of wearing more than one nail polish colour at any one time was deeply unfashionable. While nail lengths and shapes may have evolved, one uniform shade across your fingertips was the norm, and anything else was seen as, well, a bit tacky. But now, the rule book has been well and truly thrown out the window and ‘rainbow nails’, featuring five shades (or more) are everywhere. When you think about it, it’s not surprising that multicoloured manicures have become the biggest nail trend of 2020. If ever there was a year that needed brightening up – in whatever way possible – it’s this one, and painting your nails with a range of pretty polishes is a quick way to lift your mood on dreary days. It’s also the sort of trend you want to show off on Instagram, and the influx of #rainbownails posts happened to coincide with the reopening of many nail salons, resulting in lots of requests for multi-hued manis. So, how do you get the rainbow nails look at home? First of all, it’s important to note that in spite of the name, this trend actually veers away from the traditional seven colours of the rainbow. Instead, it’s about choosing a spectrum of five shades that go beautifully together, whether that’s pastels, neons or rich jewel tones. Alternatively, you might want to create a kind of ombre effect, by choosing one colour – say pink – and Orly Passion Fruit Nail Polish, £8.95, available painting each nail a different shade, from NailPolishDirect from pastel to fuchsia. If you’re feeling really creative, you could take a white nail polish and Nails Inc Walker’s Court, £11, available mix up your own shades, from light from Superdrug to dark, by varying the amount of white you add. Another way to try the trend – as seen on Kylie Jenner – is to do a colourful twist on the French manicure, by painting just the tips of your nails with bright shades, and leaving the rest nude.

Fruity favourites

R

emember last summer when that black and white polka dot Zara dress sold in droves, and you couldn’t go a day without seeing someone wearing it? We think if the pandemic hadn’t hit, we’d probably still be seeing a lot of ‘The Dress’ this year, but with many workplaces still closed and opportunities for socialising limited, this year’s contender for most ubiquitous frock is an online sensation instead. Meet the Strawberry Dress. Created by American designer Lirika Matoshi, the pink tulle midi design, embellished with glittery strawberries, has become inescapable on social media recently. It’s quite extraordinary that a $490 (£368/€408) dress could become so popular (last year’s Zara number was £39.99/€43.69, don’t forget), especially during a year when most of us don’t have much call for sparkly pink party dresses. On the other hand, maybe that’s exactly why the frothy frock has become such a phenomenon. Shoppers are looking for escapism of all kinds – donning a beautiful dress (with optional matching face mask) is guaranteed to cheer you up during these dark days. You don’t have to shell out that much to discover the mood-boosting powers of fruity fashion, however. There’s a glut of citrus and tropical delights in the shops right now, and chances are you’ll get a lot more wear out of them than you would a fancy tulle frock.

How Has Covid-19 Changed the way we Live?

W

hilst none of us could have predicted the Covid-19 pandemic and the enormous challenges it brought with it, there has been some interesting changes in the way that we are living in our homes. Many have spent lock-down scrutinizing what they like and don’t like about certain areas of their home, and some people have simply decided it’s time for a change! Whether it’s a single room or an entire house, we work with all different size projects to help our clients realise their dream living space. With many of us now working from home either permanently or with a view to only going back into the workplace part-time, our work-life balance has become crucially important, and the home matters more than ever as a haven for personal and domestic life. Many home offices were set up in a hurry to be up-and-running as soon as possible, so now’s the time to reassess yours if it’s not working for you. Finding the right desk and chair should be your top priority. Select a desk wide enough for your computer and anything else necessary to do your work, ideally a minimum of 120cm in width and around 70-75cm in height. Invest in a good quality chair that is comfortable and adjustable if possible. Other small changes could include zoning with a rug, moving your desk to make the most of natural light and sensible storage. Just because this is a place of work, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on style! The great part about working from home is that you can decide how 76 SEPTEMBER 2020

YOU want your home office to look and feel, and what inspires you. Lockdown has also seen an emerging trend for converting a spare room or garage into a home gym. There’s a whole host of different set-ups to be considered, from the fully functioning gym with all the fancy equipment you would find in a high street gym, to an empty loft space which would make the perfect space for quiet yoga and meditation. Here’s a few easy ways you can bring pleasure back into your home: • Make Friday night “cocktail night” with a cool home bar. Start with a cabinet, then set the scene with a striking barware, lamp, exquisite glassware and your favourite cocktail ingredients! • Try bringing more light into a dull corner with a beautiful mirror. Consider an oval shape with soft curves and hang where it can reflect natural light. • Review your dining table and turn mealtimes into joyous occasions. Take inspiration from boutique hotels or restaurants you love, with smart dining chairs, beautiful tableware and candles at dinner. • Finally, given the fantastic weather we’ve seen in lockdown, al fresco dining adds another dimension to your home. We can create beautiful outdoor spaces as an extension of the interior using clever layouts and stunning outdoor furniture. • Think about your end goal and the space you have, or give us a call on 01442 818122, or pop into our showroom on Berkhamsted High Street, where we can help with design inspiration!

Kennett Electrics Life Magazines spoke to David Kennett, Owner of Kennett Electrics based in Beaconsfield to find out more about their services...

What are your thoughts on Smart lighting and is that something you do? Kennett Electrics is a registered smart home installer. We do a lot of work around smart lighting. We have provided lighting consultancy and installation in both internal and external applications. Lighting can really provide that wow factor in a home and smart lighting allows use of tone and colour to change mood and ambience at the touch of a button using phone, tablet or smart speaker control. The technology has come a very long way over the last few years and it is now as robust as any hard wired lighting system. We have seen your vans around, how many electricians does Kennett Electrics have? We really wanted to have some eye catching vehicles on the road, and it seems we have achieved just that, we get comments on our vans often. We are currently 9 electricians based in Chesham, Hazlemere, Beaconsfield, Reading, and Central London. That allows us to cover a wide area, and a wide range of projects from small to large domestic, and commercial. Do you ever get asked to create anything a little more bespoke than off the shelf fittings? Yes! All the time! Kennett Electrics aren’t just robot installers, we love the opportunity to get creative with electrics. We have done a lot of work around feature decking, ponds, pools, hot tubs, using local craftsmen including carpenters and blacksmiths, we are currently working on a feature light for a local distillery.

80 SEPTEMBER 2020

Do you produce landlord certificates? Yes we do. Kennett Electrics is qualified, certified, and insured to carry out electrical installation testing across the board both domestic and commercial. One of our most commonly used services at the moment is Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR). New regulations require any landlord to ensure their rental properties are EICR tested every 5 years, or at each change of tenancy. We currently work for several private property portfolios ensuring their testing is up to date, and their tenants have safe electrics. If I decide to use Kennett Electrics to carry out my work, how long would I have to wait? Thanks to our large list of happy customers we are in constant (and growing!) demand. We endeavour to work no more than 3 weeks out. We are a very customer driven and focused company, if work starts to push beyond that we look to hire more electricians to handle the workload. We work to keep our customers happy and that includes not keeping them waiting too long. Kennett Electrics is Bucks trading standards, NAPIT and Trust mark assessed and approved, we are members of check a trade and Yell where you can find reviews from our customers. We are fully insured and guaranteed for your piece of mind. If it’s Electrics, it’s Kennett Electrics. kennettelectrics.com

Autumn Wall Decor Colours I

ntroducing an original marbled range of wallpapers and prints made in the traditional Japanese Art of Suminagashi, meaning ‘floating ink’. Each piece is unique and colours are chosen for individual interiors and seasons. For Autumn 2020 colours are chosen in burnt orange, luxe blues and warm metallics such as bronze & gold. The process of Suminagashi involves colours being placed on the water surface, which then begin to expand on the water. They are only encouraged to move by air, nothing else disturbs the surface. The colours move in an organic way when a dynamic pattern has been shaped, Natascha makes a print by placing and moving the paper on the water. Both wallpaper making & paper marbling have been listed as an endangered craft by the Heritage Crafts Association. Driven to preserve these crafts, Natascha brings them alive on larger pieces, as abstract paintings. Therefore making them contemporary and accessible. natmaks.com

A wealth of choice at Window Wise

Window Wise Company Ltd are approaching their 40th year in business and the choices now available have never been so apparent.

C

o-owner Christian Metcalfe explains:“From replacing one or two windows and doors, a complete refurbishment project or new build, the products and choices available now to customers are greater than ever”. A lot of important decision have to be made to ensure that the designs and styles of the windows and doors compliment the property and also comply with the glazing and security regulations that are now required. Colour options on both uPVC and aluminium frames have increased over the last 5 years and it is quite often that a large door system in either bifolding or sliding is a different colour finish to the rest of the windows, which in turn makes a feature of the property. It’s even the case now with a traditional looking house that the front elevation can retain the character, but the rear can be transformed into a contemporary look with the glazing being the prime factor in the design. Being able to show customers all of the products and choices available were one of the most important decisions when Window Wise relocated to their new showroom. Christian adds “ My business partner, Bruce

(Hutchens) and I understand that potential customers want to have the opportunity to come and see, feel, touch, open/close the windows and doors. They want to have a close look at the frames, look at the finishes available, glass options and handles etc. We are very mindful of the power of photographs on internet websites/social media and how they provide early ideas of what customers want; however we wanted to be part of the next stage and give customers the opportunity to come and see the quality of the products we offer. To provide the service and the opportunity for customers to view all products, Window Wise Co Ltd are pleased to announce the opening of their new showroom in Buckinghamshire. Located in the town of Chesham, their 2700 sq ft premises includes a complete range of windows, doors, bifolding doors, panoramic sliding doors, front entrance doors and rooflights, available in both aluminium and uPVC options.

35 years of Hazlemere Lighting

L

ocal business Hazlemere Lighting celebrates their 35th birthday this year. Over the years the business has had 3 people in charge, and we at Life Magazines have spoken to them all about their memories and highlights of their times there. Hazlemere Lighting opened on 21st September 1985 by Pam and Clive Brown. The shop had previously been a toy & model shop and before that, an electrical appliances and television retailer. The couple owned and ran the shop for 18 years. They recall one of the first people that came through the door telling them that “no one knew why they thought a lighting shop would do well” and that the Darby and Joan club gave them 6 months!! 35 years later and Hazlemere Lighting is still going strong. “We were very lucky to have Moira Wilson work with us almost from the start, she stayed with us until we sold the business and was a brilliant employee and friend. We also had other staff who were all very good” they told us. Their clients included a national builder, supplying products for their show-homes, along with Government departments. They imported Japanese Kutani bases and sold them at exhibitions at the NEC and through agents all over England. Pam and Clive sold the business in 2002 to David Stanbury who officially took it over on 1st August 2002. David was a longstanding friend and customer of the previous owners, and remembers how lucky he was to have their support along with the fantastic staff who carried on working for him once Pam & Clive left. David says “Over the

years I’ve seen the lighting industry change from traditional lamps to LED lamps. I always made sure that we had a large range of fittings and lamps (or as many people know them as - bulbs) in stock, which is why were known as the ‘Aladdin’s cave of lighting.’ I would like to thank all of the fantastic staff and especially all of our lovely customers”. Liam Johnson who took over the running of the business from David in May 2019 says “taking over the business I was extremely proud and honoured to be part of such a well-established business”. He had previously worked with David for 5 years. “The lovely thing about Hazlemere Lighting is that everyone who has been a part of it has always had a really strong relationship and this is still going strong 35 years down the line. With Pam and Clive still a huge part of the business involving our table and floor lamp repair service, and David still being in the business, the level of consistency in all that we offer, both products and service, remains very high”. Liam explained that he wants to continue to bring the business into more modern times, especially on the digital side of things and they can now offer fantastic online facilities to showcase their wide product range. “Without doubt a business is only as good as the staff it employs and the customers that use it. At Hazlemere Lighting we are extremely lucky to have both. Brilliant, knowledgeable and helpful staff as well as a loyal customer base that have used us for many years, tell their friends about us who then become our next generation of loyal customers. I thank you all” says Liam Here’s to the next 35 years! hazlemerelighting.co.uk
