atfield Park and Gardens open for the season on Saturday 1st April, and there really is something to enjoy for all the family. You can enjoy a peaceful stroll around the beautiful sundial, West Parterre and Old Palace Gardens, which have been carefully curated and nurtured over the ages. Visit the adjacent Woodland Gardens and find yourself surrounded by the beautiful mature beach and oak trees, and magnificent rhododendrons. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times. 2023 is a very special year at Carpenter’s Garden Centre. Established in 1923, Carpenter’s now celebrates its 100th year of trading. We believe that makes us one of the oldest Garden Centres & Farm Shops in Hertfordshire! Carpenter’s was established by Fred Carpenter Snr in 1923. Initially Fred grew fruit & vegetables to sell at the local markets.

A Taste of History BUN-dles of foodie fun in St Albans this Easter
© St Albans Cathedral
S
t Albans has a fascinating history with food and drink with rich heritages including it being home to England’s oldest pub and the precursor to the Hot Cross Bun. It is said that the Alban Bun originated in St Albans where Brother Thomas Roclliffe, a 14th Century Monk at St Albans Abbey, created the original recipe. From 1361, Brother Thomas would bake these buns to feed the poor on Good Friday. You can taste the bun for yourself at St Albans Cathedral from Ash Wednesday. Handmade in the Cathedral’s very own Abbot’s Kitchen the bun is baked to a traditional recipe, which remains a closely guarded secret, and whilst the Alban and the Hot Cross Bun are similar in taste, they differ in appearance with the Alban Bun having a distinctive cross cut into the unbaked dough with a knife rather than the piped cross of the modern day bun. Pop in and enjoy one (or two)! The Abbot’s Kitchen is open daily 10-4pm.
HISTORICAL HOTSPOTS St Albans is bursting with fabulous foodie hotspots. Make a weekend of it and indulge in some of the finest artisan food and drink this Easter. 20 APRIL 2023

The vibrant and historic St Albans Market was founded in 860 by the sixth Abbot of St Albans. Running twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays it draws people from far and wide who love the buzz and the wide selection of fresh and artisan goods. Check out both ends of the Market for some of the finest array of street food you can taste. Did you know there are more pubs per square mile than anywhere else in the country? If you like your pint served with a bit of character, St Albans is the place for you. From Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, regarded as England’s oldest pub to the Snug (formerly the Fleur de Lys) the city is jam packed with historic pubs that have been a favourite place to refuel and relax for centuries. It wouldn’t be Easter without something sweet. lose protection is a specialist security service often thought to be the reserve of the ‘rich and famous’. However, in the modern world of police cuts and an increase in crime close protection services have become ever more popular with families and business owners. So, what is close protection and what does it entail? Close protection more widely referred to as bodyguard services, or personal protection is the provision of physical personal security to protect a person or group of people from harm or attack be it targeted or a general local threat. Essentially, it is hiring bodyguards. Not your stereotypical burly bodyguard romanticised and depicted in TV and film, but a discrete nonimposing, non-threatening professional close protection operative (CPO) embedded with a family or company that does not draw unwanted or unwarranted attention by undesirables. They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to keep clients safe from danger. Despite how bodyguards are perceived, close protection operatives do not spend each day toeto-toe fighting off enemies. Research and planning

are key, identifying threats and risks, and avoiding any physical altercation at all costs. Real-world bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, or nannies. Female bodyguards are increasingly popular with high-net-worth families with their stealth ability and emotional intelligence. With close protection being such a vital service for high-profile and high-risk individuals and families it is important to hire bodyguards through a highly credible, experienced, and established security company that is licensed and insured to provide such services. It is worth noting that household staffing agencies cannot legally satisfy these prerequisites. Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond.

Hertfordshire zoo opens two UK-first designed new habitats!
I
n March 2023, the Hertfordshire zoo Paradise Wildlife Park announced the highly anticipated news that their new animal habitats Sun Bear Heights and Jaguar Jungle finally opened on 1st of April 2023! These builds had been delayed due to COVID-19 and Brexit, with a spokesperson for the zoo stating: ‘the public has been incredibly understanding of our delays and whilst these pushbacks were out of our control, we have embraced the additional time to create UK-first designed habitats.’ The grand opening of the habitats saw the Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Robert Voss cutting the ribbon alongside Sally Burton DL the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire as well as other members of the Hertfordshire community. Paradise Wildlife Park welcomed stars such as Tottenham Hotspurs player Lucas Moura, Love Island star Marcel Somerville and The Pool Guy Miles Lafin, to celebrate the grand opening on 1st of April. The two new state-of-the-art habitats introduce Vulnerable (IUCN Red List) species of sun bears, binturongs and Asian small-clawed otters to the park in a mixed species habitat. They have also welcomed back their resident jaguars Kumal and Kedera who have been on holiday at their sister site The Big Cat Sanctuary since pre-covid works began on their habitat. These habitats immerse visitors in the culture of the Pantanal of Brazil and the jungles of Southeast Asia, whilst teaching them about the need for conservation and protection of the species. All species will act as ambassadors for their wild counterparts and with hope, in the near future,

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters, members and visitors’ for their patience and understanding during these project builds. The wait is officially over and we are very excited to introduce you all to new and returning species at the zoo”
they will become part of the international breeding programme set out to protect the genetics of the animals. Coinciding with Paradise Wildlife Park’s 39th anniversary and their final year before rebranding to Hertfordshire Zoo on the 1st of April 2024, these habitats mark a momentous turning point in the zoo’s history. Like many in the country, these builds have seen delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit and these particular habitats have been large builds for a small family-run zoo. Lynn Whitnall, CEO stated: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters, members and visitors’ for their patience and understanding during these project builds. The wait is officially over and we are very excited to introduce you all to new and returning species at the zoo.’ Paradise Wildlife Park support the conservation and protection of wild species through their charity by raising awareness across the zoo. pwpark.com

We’ll provide a paper bag for collecting lavender which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed! We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.
PLANTING & GROWING Our top tips for growing lavender at home: Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a

porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through. Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in. Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long. Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive. When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established. There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting

your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up. When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood. This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.
WHICH VARIETY TO PICK? There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from. We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field. Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for domestic use. Intermedia is a hybrid plant which comes from a combination of Angustifolia and Latifolia lavenders. Many varieties of Intermedia are used for producing commercial oil and dried bunches, as the yields from these plants are up to three times greater than Angustifolia. Intermedia is also very hardy with a flowering period from early July through to September. If you’d like to pick a variety of lavender that can be found in our fields, you’ll find a selection of Angustifolia and Intermedia plants, available in two different pot sizes in our farm shop. Dogs are welcome on-site so long as they are kept on a lead and any doggy deposits are cleared 38 APRIL 2023

away by their owners. The lavender attracts a diverse mix of wildlife, in particular bees. You’ll be able to see many bees amongst the lavender rows. Much of the other wildlife may be harder to spot but the farm is home to hares, butterflies, insects, partridges, skylarks and more. Experience a different view of Hitchin Lavender and the surrounding countryside by walking along the public footpaths which intersect our farm alongside our main field and outbuildings. Waxin’ Lyrical at Hatfield House with Classic Ibiza’s Superstar DJs
C
lassic Ibiza returns to Hatfield House on Saturday 19 August for an evening of Balearic-infused dance music. With plans now in full swing, we sat down with the shows two DJs, Goldierocks and Jose Luis, to ask them about the Classic Ibiza experience and what to expect from their sets this summer. Goldierocks has been an integral member of the Classic Ibiza family since the very beginning, bringing the party with her deep house classics and joining the Urban Soul Orchestra on the decks for the Sundowner and Dance Sets. This year’s show includes 15 completely new tracks in an orchestral set of over 30 house classics. Ever wondered what it’s like to DJ with an orchestra that has worked with the likes of Groove Armada and Robert Miles? Well, we asked her: “Performing in front of thousands of people, backed by this immense wall of sound feels so powerful. It’s like you’re in a rocket-ship! I live and breathe dance music and getting to perform these iconic tracks with such depth and emotion, really is a wild ride.” Jose Luis is a former Pacha and Ministry of Sound resident DJ. With credentials like that, you’d be forgiven to think he’d be pretty cool about the show. Jose’s reaction when we asked him for his thoughts couldn’t have been more different: “Classic Ibiza is the highlight of my summer! Seeing so many people, from babies to grandparents, dancing and having a great time to the music I’m playing is an incredibly rewarding
48 APRIL 2023
experience.” So, what can you expect from their DJ sets this summer? Jose moved to the UK from Venezuela in the ‘90s, so unsurprisingly his DJing style has been heavily influenced by his roots: “The Latin vibe has become one of the biggest sounds of the last year, so I’m going deeper into it, not forgetting a few modern classics and some uncovered gems. My set also includes a live jamming session with members of the Urban Soul Orchestra - it’s gonna be awesome!” Goldierocks’ Deep House DJ Set acts as an appetizer to the evening’s main event, when she’s joined on stage by the Urban Soul Orchestra for the Dance Set. Here’s what she said about her set: “Bottom shakers and sing your heart out deep house classics! High energy, summer feel good vibes, can’t stop moving beats… a mix of classic and brand new Ibiza anthems.” Car-parking is free and there are no booking fees. You can even bring your own picnic. Local street food vendors and the San Miguel bar are also available on site.

L
ockers Park has been educating boys for 150 years. Our experience teaches us that our boys-only approach creates a culturally and academically supportive environment, free of the social pressures seen in a co-educational setting. Allowing boys to convey ideas and solve problems without having to conform to societal expectations of what boys should be enables them to focus academically and express themselves more freely. Habits of mind are at the heart of our curriculum. We use educational theory to adapt our teaching which develops boys’ skills with a practical, problem-based approach. This focus on how boys learn best helps increase concentration

in the classroom with fast-paced, interactive lessons. School days are deliberately longer than normal to allow pupils the time they need to recharge their batteries through well-considered breaks throughout the day. Sport for all and on a daily basis is a cornerstone of what is on offer, as is a wide range of academic subjects and cocurricular activities. We pride ourselves on excellent Common Entrance results (100% pass rate). Recent leavers have joined Eton, Harrow, St Albans and Berkhamsted with a range of scholarships, awards and special commendations for exceptional exam results. Our flexible boarding provision allows boys to gain confidence, independence and boost their self-esteem in a supportive environment. Friendships forged in the boarding house frequently last a lifetime. Senior Schools regularly comment how well-prepared our boys are for 13+ education. We offer wraparound care that is second to none. Boys can arrive from 7.30am and stay until 7.30pm, receiving three high quality meals and enjoying the teacher-run afterschool activities. The optional Saturday School programme gives pupils access to lessons that will stretch their interests, or allow them to build greater understanding in areas where they need more support. This flexible offer is included within the school fees at no extra cost. Whilst many schools lose pupils in Year 7, we continue to grow due to the strength of our academic programme and success at sending boys to a wide range of Senior Schools. Scholarships are available to talented boys who wish to experience the benefits of a Lockers Park education. lockerspark.co.uk

AS PUPIL VOICE GETS LOUDER, SCHOOLS MUST LISTEN HARDER… By Lara Pechard, Head at St Margaret’s School in Hertfordshire
A
rt and other creative outlets so often showcase what matters to young people today. Expression through creativity can help students to highlight personal struggles or address topics they are passionate about. At my school, there are also many elements of pride in heritage and of identity that come through via creative works. A year on since Sarah Everard’s life was taken, and a few years since the murder of George Floyd, you can see an obvious knock-on impact of these incidents and other social movements in our schools today. Perhaps most significantly, pupil voice has got louder. Schools are also listening much harder to pupils. The Everyone’s Invited movement tarnished many
64 APRIL 2023
school reputations across the country. It revealed some traumatic issues that schools hadn’t known about or identified before. Issues around feeling safe have had sharper focus too and schools have had to think this through carefully. In my school we have thought hard about this and have asked pupils to physically draw onto site maps to indicate where they feel safe and where they feel vulnerable, so that we can adapt our common spaces and our duty system. As a school we have also ensured that all stakeholders have received diversity and inclusion training and we are looking hard at how we can ensure our staff and governors reflect our community. There is still some way to go of course. With many pupils running with societies that are important to them whether it is the LGBTQ+ group or a faith service of their choice, things have shifted irreversibly for the good in schools. Listening to our young people is key and schools are continually having to find new ways of leaning into conversations and nurturing pupils to talk more but as ever, keeping up as parents is not easy. Strong pastoral settings in school are providing parents with help on how to navigate this period to best encourage, but also support their children. Thankfully schools are also thinking more about their position on these issues today and how they can help in a positive way rather than simply reacting. stmargarets-school.org.uk

CREAM OF ROYSTON
O
nce you know your son or daughter is getting married a wedding is just the excuse you need for dressing up. Bride aside all eyes will be on the Mums. Cream has been trading in Royston for 47 years and is predominantly a special occasion store. The extensive stock on two floors is colour co-ordinated for ease of selection. Everything is available from outfits (sizes 6-28) to shoes, bags, hats, fascinators and lingerie. Brands stocked include Condici, Ispirato, Veni Infantino and Couture Club. Less formalwear from Frank Lyman, Alison, Glitz and Lewis Henry is also ideal for a day at the races, wedding abroad or guests and cruising. Mothers usually purchase their outfits four to six months when everything gels and you have that wow factor. It is usual for the mothers to co-ordinate with the wedding party. Many brides have a colour scheme and it is a good idea to either blend or contrast with this. It is very important to be comfortable with what you are wearing. A
shift dress with a jacket is always a popular choice because the jacket can be taken off later. Elegant and slightly understated always works and a hat should complement the outfit. Whilst the outfit must be perfect for the occasion it is important to have the correct lingerie underneath which can alter the whole look of a garment. Cream has a well stocked lingerie department which can be tried on with the outfit. A free alteration service is available on all full priced outfits bought in store, a fitting being carried out one month before the event. Shoes and bags are made in Spain in different heel heights and beautiful leathers. These are made to order if not available in stock. The Sale shop, Occasions for less, located opposite Cream in Roysia House offers mother of the bride and groom outfits, shoes, bags and hats from previous seasons at fantastic prices. There is also a half price section at Cream of Royston. See the bottom of the pages on Condici and Ispirato on creamfashions.com.

ROYAL ASCOT STYLE GUIDE
EVOLVES TO REVEAL A BRAND-NEW INSPIRATIONAL LOOKBOOK FOR 2023
F
or the first time in over a decade, Ascot Racecourse has unveiled a new look and feel for its annual Style Guide, which has been renamed The Royal Ascot Lookbook. This year sees the British racing institution take a new direction, producing the Royal Ascot Lookbook 2023. The inspirational editorial comprises six fashion edits: Luxe, Tailoring, Pre-Loved & Rental, Vintage, High Street and Emerging Designer. Partnering with world-renowned photographer Damian Foxe and legendary stylist Luke Jefferson Day, the new lookbook perfectly encapsulates the zeitgeist of occasionwear dressing for the spring/ summer 2023 season. Whilst the Official Royal Ascot Dress Code remains unchanged, the transformation of the Style Guide offers inspiration across the Royal Enclosure, Queen Anne Enclosure and Village Enclosure, encouraging racegoers to dream up an outfit that is authentic to their personal style and approach to sartorial shopping. The new direction focuses on a deeply original sense of personal style inspired by fashion magazine editorial, elevating the creative direction to entice racegoers to get lost in the magical world of occasionwear. From retro-inspired vintage

looks evocative of the 1970s to exquisite tailoring and avant-garde millinery, the Lookbook is an inspirational fashion feast with inspiration to suit all budgets. Luxe Edit – Featuring soft, buttery silk gowns by Roksanda, velvet mirrored suiting by Gucci and perfectly paired three-piece morning dress by Favourbrook, the Luxe Edit showcases a reimagined approach to designer dressing. Pre-loved & Rental Edit – With sustainable dressing at the forefront of the style agenda, the Pre-Loved & Rental Edit showcases spectacular second-hand and hireable fashion from leaders in the rental space including HURR, Selfridges Rental, Moss Bros and Oliver Brown. From raiding grandma’s hat boxes to scouring charity shops for treasures, this edit is for the sartorially adventurous who are after unique fashion finds. High Street Edit – Depicting style that transcends ‘off the peg’ suit buying, the High Street Edit sparks intrigue in summer linens, mint tailoring, alternative prints and glamorous dresses suitable for all enclosures. Featured brands include Ascot’s Official Ladieswear Sponsor LK Bennett, Sandro, All Saints and Reformation. Vintage Edit – Complete with sleek 1980s skirt suits by Thierry Mugler, preppy blazers by Vivienne Westwood and flamboyant fuchsia

silhouettes, the Vintage Edit evokes a sleek and surprisingly modern aesthetic for raceday styling, inherited from iconic wardrobes of yesteryear. Tailoring Edit – Taking pleats and darts to the next level, the immaculate tailoring is here to make a statement in the Lookbook. Daring colour block suits, contemporary soft shades, and traditional fine tailoring, the Tailoring Edit presents inspiration from Zimmermann, Edward Sexton and RXQUETTE. Emerging Designer Edit – Celebrating looks from the most coveted up-and-coming fashion designers. Luke pairs a billowing S.S. Daley checked suit with epic dream catcherinspired millinery crafted by Victoria Grant. Never included designers Richard Quinn, Charles Jeffery LOVERBOY and Ahluwalia, are heralded in the Emerging Designer Edit. Felicity Barnard, Commercial Director, Ascot Racecourse, comments: “There are very few events that allow people to embrace dressing for a special occasion on such a global scale and each year Royal Ascot becomes the most followed display of sartorial elegance and individual flair – a true celebration of style that is woven into the very fabric of Ascot’s DNA. I look forward to seeing the racecourse brimming with colour and energy as we head into the spring/summer season. “This year sees an exciting evolution for what has been known as the Royal Ascot Style Guide for more than a decade. For 2023 Ascot is proud to unveil the Royal Ascot Lookbook where, for the first time, we look to inspire people through six new fashion edits that draw from current styling trends. Responsible style remains a key part of Royal Ascot as we continue to find ways to dress, whether that is renting occasionwear or investing in forever pieces.” Luke Jefferson Day, stylist, comments: “This season I wanted to encourage unexpected freedom under the guidance of the enclosure dress codes and inspire racegoers to be a little more unconventional and inventive in the way they

dress up, and how they source their looks. We’ve championed innovative British designers, whilst also showcasing international brands from further afield. Damian Foxe, photographer and narrator of the Lookbook comments: “As a long-time collaborator of Royal Ascot, it has been a joy to be part of the Lookbook’s evolution as it moves away from a means to communicate the dress code, and instead towards becoming a source of fashion inspiration and a bellwether in the world of occasion dressing. “For 2023, we have decided to completely move away from creating a Lookbook dictated by enclosure, in favour of one which puts style centre stage. In many ways, I think this reflects what we are seeing as the evolution of style at Royal Ascot and the myriad of looks on show from its racegoers”. Royal Ascot will be held from Tuesday 20th – Saturday 24th June 2023. ascot.com

FRESH FLORALS FOR SPRING
Now’s the time to max your petal power, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
I
t’s no secret flowers are one of fashion’s most enduring love affairs – and this season is no exception. “We believe florals never go out of fashion,” says Zoe Donovan, digital and marketing director at LK Bennett. “As a brand, we focus on investment pieces that can be worn time and time again, dressed up and down. And a beautiful floral silk dress ticks many boxes. “This season, we’ve reimagined incredible vintage archive prints, bringing a unique feel to a number of florals, including an 18th-century meadow scene.” Another fan, Jo Collins, head of womenswear design at FatFace, says florals aren’t going anywhere. “After the past few years, we see people looking towards trends that are optimistic and uplifting. This is especially played out in this season’s palettes and the print explosion we’re seeing.” Mood-enhancing and easy to pull off, here’s what’s in bloom…
with wedding season coming into play, these freespirited wild flowers can be accessorised with a floral fascinator or headband.
MODERN MEADOW
One of fashion’s favourites, can you ever have too many maxi dresses? We think not. Whether it’s a tea dress or empire line, the flowing silhouette is flattering and feminine. Spring’s standouts come in two-tones, with floral detailing focusing on a prominent shade. Think vibrant pink or cornflower blue to build on your enchanted garden, err, wardrobe.
“Lilac has been an emerging trend colour for a few seasons,” says Collins. “It can be tricky on some skin tones, but we’ve treated this very much as a background colour to overlay the season’s pops of apricots and nude pinks.” This ‘on-trend’ colour is ideal for layering up, and would work well for a high summer event, says Collins. And, 88 APRIL 2023
BOLD, BLOUSY BLOOMS “Our customers are still embracing the versatility of the midi dress and we’re excited to introduce great new silhouettes and prints this season,” says Queralt Ferrer, director of design for fashion at John Lewis. “Our in-house design team has introduced graphic tile prints, block colours and bold florals; giving customers a fresh take on the floral midi for spring/summer.” Fusing full blooms with a puffy shorter sleeve will take you seamlessly through the seasons… save your heels for after-hours.
DITSY FLORALS Ditsy prints and darling buds look casual and laid-back, but with a little bit of attitude. Wear with trainers and a denim jacket over your shoulders to nail the look.

Discover the great outdoors with Cane-Line… carving out a protected piece of space within its loosely woven walls. A sculptural silhouette creatively crafted from weather-resistant, weave, it’s at once a visual focal point and a shaded, private area to have to yourself. Hang it on a rope to add a meditative swing to stolen moments. Need some extra outside space to host or relax in? When no other areas seem quite right? Fashion a new one in seconds with Cane-Line’s Hyde Parasol, which forms its own living zone
T
he season of outdoor living is upon us, and as open-air spaces become areas to extend life into, we should make the most of every minute. Renowned outdoor design brand Cane-Line knows the effect fresh air, seeing the sky and – dare we dream it – a flash of sunlight can have on the day, its pieces focused on creating joy, as well as the weatherproof practicalities. The 2023 Cane-Line collection of designer outdoor furniture doesn’t do conventions. Picture a set of outdoor chairs, an outdoor table, an outdoor sofa. It doesn’t look like that. Every contemporary, boundary-pushing al fresco design is carefully crafted to create daily servings of indulgence, intimacy, satisfaction, smiles, charm, and cheer. Let’s explore the highlights and how they can impact our day-to-day lives. Self-care is the phrase on everybody’s lips, but so often not at the top of to-do lists. We all need some time to ourselves, to step back and assess, or to put everything to one side and just be. That’s where Cane-Line’s Hive Hanging Chair comes in, an encompassing shape which hugs the sitter,

wherever it travels. Sunny or not, the expansive square canopy is architectural, like an extension of an indoor ceiling, instantly creating a room-like feel, shade, and a sense of seclusion, everywhere it stands. Taking lounge furniture outside can sometimes feel wrong. That’s what living rooms are for! Think again. Who says outdoor living is only for functional occasions like hosting, eating and cooking. Why not relax al fresco? Take a book, take a cup of tea, take another person and take time out under the sun. It’ll be the highlight of your day. The Peacock Chair straddles the bridge between indoor and out – pretty and practical, visually like something that belongs inside, but ready to be exposed to the elements. Member of a comprehensive collection of designer outdoor seating, the range’s brutalist grey palette echoes the tones of many buildings’ exteriors (and the occasional sky...), while its curved forms mirror contemporary interior trends, with natural accents pulling them both together. Calming the designer chair’s predominant greyscale tones are teak legs and woven seats made from weather-proof soft rope, which speak of nature and craft tradition, adding an elegant, shouldn’t-that-be-protectedfrom-the-rain edge. There’s a moment when the evening starts drifting, begins to loosen and unravel. When pudding is finished. When guests begin to float away. When there’s nothing left to do but deeply exhale. It’s a dream-like, gentle time when light has faded but the day’s not come to a proper conclusion. There’s still time for something more. How to tackle this hazy feeling furniture-wise? With something similarly undefined, that can change and evolve as well as forming areas that are alluring, easy and oh-so comfortable. Enter the Cane-Line Capture Sofa, which effortlessly harmonises with any backdrop, so the eye
smoothly meanders over its calming curves before the body melts into them. Its rounded corners and integrated tables prompt socialising. Its tonal taupe upholstery and teak details create tranquillity. Its sink-into-me softness is all about snuggling. Finally, say goodbye to limitations with the Choice Chair: a modern interchangeable seating system of different parts, it’s created with flexibility, classic Scandi style, and the environment at its forefront. The pioneering modern chair is based around a seat produced with up to 98% recycled polypropylene, its cover and legs designed to be changed without tools, transforming it from metal sled-based bar stool to teak-legged dining chair. And at the end of its life? Effortlessly recycled. ORIGIN - THE EXPERTS THEY DO IT ALL
W
hen it comes to swimming pools, Origin is a company which stands out from the rest of the competition. With over 40 years of experience, Origin is able to provide their clients with exceptional service and innovative solutions in an ever-evolving industry. Their simple and effective philosophy of ‘we do it all’, combined with a holistic approach and a passion for swimming continues to set them apart. There are many reasons to have an indoor swimming pool, and even more for Origin to build it. Origin believes a successful project requires all the specialist areas to be integrated into a consolidated design from the start. They eliminate the need for you to hire and manage separate companies for each element of the build, removing the potential risks and headache of 102 APRIL 2023
liaising between architects, engineers and builders. The initial steps in creating the perfect swimming pool are planning and design. Origin works closely with you to understand your needs and preferences and then creates a bespoke design which matches your lifestyle. By working with Origin, you can rest assured your project will be done right the first time. When hiring separate companies there can be miscommunications in the design process which can lead to costly and time-consuming revisions. However, Origin will ensure your pool design meets all of your requirements and matches your vision before construction begins. Origin have their own team of pool designers, architects and structural engineers who work closely together to deliver fully coordinated designs, from the conceptual stage to the detailed working drawing phase, every time.
Working with the 3 key creators from the early stages means the projects are considered in a lot more detail during the planning stages than they might be otherwise. This undoubtedly provides a smoother project journey later on when construction begins as the challenges of an indoor pool environment are crucial to get right. Additionally, by choosing Origin your pool will have the benefit of a warranty from one company throughout the whole process, covering all the essential aspects of the build. While architects may be beneficial for designing buildings, they may not be the best option when it comes to designing a swimming pool building as they’re a unique structure and require a different skill set. Planning and constructing swimming pools and pool houses is quite unlike any other building project. Indoor swimming pools consist of three major areas, each requiring specialist design; the pool chamber/plant, the building structure and management of the environment (heating, dehumidification and ventilation). However, with their years of industry experience, Origin have the knowledge and experience needed to create a pool which is not only beautiful but also functional and efficient. Origin are not only passionate about building indoor pools but also about swimming itself. Swimming has been proven to be a great physical activity for people of all ages and fitness levels. It’s a great form of cardiovascular exercise to help burn calories and improve overall fitness, it’s also a great way to build endurance and improve lung capacity.

The benefits of swimming don’t stop there, it’s also great for your mental wellbeing. Swimming can be a relaxing and meditative activity which helps reduce stress and anxiety. The rhythmic movement of swimming can have a calming effect on the body and mind, making it a great way to unwind after a long day. Whether you swim for fun or as part of a fitness routine, swimming is a great way to improve your overall health and well-being. The important thing to remember here is - Origin do it all. You do not need to employ a separate architect or company to work on the project with you, everything is done through them - ultimately streamlining your project and stress levels, ensuring everyone is working to the same brief from the very beginning. So, if you’re looking for a company that can handle all your swimming pool needs, look no further than Origin.

GOING FOR GREEN
S
age accents, faux foliage, grasses and leafy illustrations are all bringing fresh life into home decor right now. As springtime hots up and buds bloom, the temptation to forage for greenery and channel new beginnings is hard to resist. In fact, John Lewis is even citing green as the new grey, with a spike in sales for all things green. “Avocado has been in the style wilderness since those Seventies bathtubs were ripped out in favour of dazzling white,” says John Lewis colour expert, Melanie Archer. “But now it’s finding love again among a new generation, who want some colour and joy in their lives. “What we are seeing is far more than green shoots – with the colour poised to overtake grey as the nation’s interior shade of choice,” Archer adds. Outdoor Furniture Ideas For Your Garden
T
he garden is made for socialising, particularly in the spring and summer months. To welcome people over and get the most from your garden, beautiful, yet functional furniture is crucial in building the perfect place for dining, relaxing and enjoying your outdoor space. Transform your garden into a stunning area for dining al fresco, unwinding on comfy seating with a good book or simply somewhere to get some fresh air. Let us help you make your garden a nicer place to be.
WHAT FURNITURE IS BEST FOR THE GARDEN? The keys to great garden furniture are durability, practicality and, of course, style. BoConcept’s range of outdoor furniture uses only the very best high-resistance fabric, which is suitable for all weather. Aluminium bases stay robust in any conditions, meaning your outdoor living space will look great all year round. 114 APRIL 2023
Metal is always a good choice for the garden because it’s weather-resistant, although you might want cushions for more comfort, which will need to be stowed away on rainy days. So to avoid running back and forth with cushions, you could opt for wooden garden furniture. However, it’ll need to be a hardwood like teak or eucalyptus to be weather-proof. Rattan (or faux rattan) is a fashionable alternative – to give you a real café vibe. The benefit of synthetic rattan is that it can stay out regardless of the weather, unless the winds are too strong. The same goes for plastic, with many elegant plastic chair designs now available. As well as being suited to all weathers, they’re quick and easy to clean.
OUTDOOR LOUNGE FURNITURE IDEAS The patio is the perfect place for an outdoor living space that allows you to enjoy the open air whilst relaxing in contemporary style. Stylish rattan or wicker chairs provide a link between indoors and outdoors, while being low
maintenance and breathable. For a little more comfort, there are now outdoor sofas to fit every space. You can even find outdoor corner sofas – the perfect spot for relaxing or enjoying the company of your loved ones. If you have a large covered area or you’re feeling confident the weather will hold for a while, why not include an outdoor rug? Many are made from recycled polythene, meaning they’re both durable and eco-friendly. Complete the atmosphere of Hygge comfort with an outdoor patio heater or a firepit, which will make the scene especially cosy as the sun drops on a late summer or autumn evening. And no matter what time of year it is, festoon lights (hanging in a tree or along a fence, perhaps) will always make the garden look welcoming.
OUTDOOR DINING FURNITURE IDEAS Create an intimate ambience with outdoor dining furniture. Dining al fresco is a beautiful way to enjoy the warmer weather. Outdoor tables now come in all shapes and sizes, but time-honoured wood and metal are still favourites when it comes to materials. Glasstopped tables will also withstand the elements and add elegance to any outdoor mealtime. Some people choose matching outdoor tables and chairs, while others might prefer to mix styles with a bit of individual flair. A more unusual way to do this is by combining a bench with regular seats, adding cushions for some extra comfort. If you’re more pressed for space, a bistro-
style table and a couple of chairs are the perfect solution, giving you the perfect spot for coffee and a snack. You can even fold them away to store in a shed or conservatory when they’re not in use. Whether you’re enjoying breakfast in the sunshine or inviting friends over for a candlelit dinner, the right furniture allows you to effortlessly express your personal style. While your garden’s size and terrain will obviously influence what furniture you can and cannot fill your garden with, there’s always room for at least some outdoor seating. Weatherproof materials will always be important, but you don’t have to compromise on style: no matter what materials you favour, there are plenty of options to help you achieve a beautiful outdoor space. And if you’d like some advice on decorating the inside of your home, BoConcept St Albans offer a comprehensive and free interior design service where they can give you all the help you need.

After close to 50 years of the Grade II listed house being out of residential use and falling into disrepair, leading developer Comer Homes is transforming the expansive site into a considered collection of premium houses and apartments, which will allow residents to enjoy the lifestyle of a country estate for a fraction of the price. With prices at Newland Park ranging from £695,000 to £1.950 million purchasers have the exciting opportunity to live like the lord or lady of the manor for between 3-8% of the true value of the mansion house and wider grounds. Comer Homes continues to restore the grounds and original house, which will be converted into apartments as part of a later phase, whilst also delivering modern facilities that will make Newland Park one of the best private residential developments in the UK. Residents can walk the expansive grounds, which feature a mixture of landscaped and wild planted gardens and parkland, as well as children’s play areas and modern sports facilities. “Homeowners benefit from the amenities and services of a fivestar hotel including a 24-hour, restaurant Benjamin’s, currently offering home delivery”
Elysian Residences chose Stanmore for their flagship development due to the area’s sense of community, its urban location with a rural feel, alongside its connectivity into Central London from Stanmore station. The Landsby’s position on Merrion Avenue also affords homeowners accessibility to the shops and restaurants situated on Stanmore highstreet. Designed by leading London architects Collado Collins, the Landsby’s architectural style deliberately references the Art Deco period seen in the local area with generous covered balconies and large windows. Limited apartments are still available to purchase at the Landsby. Prices start from £480,000 for a one-bedroom, £695,000 for a two-bedroom and £1,275,000 for a penthouse apartment: all providing private outdoor space. Brand new wallpaper and interiors collection launched by

The Smith Interior
attooist turned interior designer Nicola Smith launches her first ever exclusive collection featuring wallpaper, fabric, cushions and lampshades. Taking maximalist animal print decor to the next level, Nicola Smith of The Smith Interior announces her first, exclusive interior design range, the ‘Roar’ collection. March 2023: Nicola Smith launches her beautiful first collection featuring wallpapers, fabrics, cushions and lampshades through her interiors brand, The Smith Interior. Having worked as an accomplished tattooist for over twelve years, during 2021 when lockdowns prevented her from working in the tattoo studio, Nicola successfully completed a diploma in Interior Design. This inspired the renovation of her recently bought home and also launched her into the interiors realm on Instagram (@thesmithinterior) where she has an account that focuses on maximalism. Nicola and her home will also be appearing soon on the upcoming brand new Channel 4 programme, Outrageous Homes, hosted by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Smith said: “I’ve spent many years drawing for my work as a tattooist, and even longer enjoying putting together room schemes in my own home. When I had the time during lockdown to complete my interiors diploma I saw another pathway open up and am enjoying exploring that as a new beginning”. Based in Hampshire, the unique designs are hand drawn and designed. Featuring four gorgeous prints each in four coordinating colourways, the new Roar collection is available on velvet fabric sold by the meter, luxury wallpaper, sumptuous cushions and fabulously fringed lampshades. Inspired by her love of bright colours and drawing on her many years working as a tattooist, Nicola brings her unique illustrative art to the interiors world.
