TV director’s son launches new Herts based business

A STORY TOLD Great stories should never be forgotten Bob Gardam: Director of The Big Match (ITV) & CH4 Racing

I

clearly remember when I was told Dad had been diagnosed with Parkinsons, agreed he was not so good on his legs but he was still Dad as I knew him. The years rolled on and I watched the illness gently take more of a hold. The thought of losing him never entered my head after all he was mostly himself, but losing his life story nagged me, how long would it be before he had difficulty recalling his marvellous life? Being one of 6 kids, I was the one best placed to save his memories for longevity, we also had a lot in common, Television. I’m a successful television editor, pretty much done and seen everything so I took it on myself to document his story whilst he was able. My aim, to tell it warts and all, to set the record straight, the stories from his childhood, the people who influenced and whom he shared his life with and how he came to be the man we know him to be. I put the idea to him and he was game. Dad sat down and wrote his life story over a

couple of weeks, every now and again calling to clarify dates etc and progress was made. My brother went up into the attic, retrieved his pictures and together they placed them in his timeline. Some pictures reminded him of stories he’d forgotten, some just the details around an event and some of family and friends who had past before. We also pulled video of happier family moments, news cuttings, anything that was relevant. It was a great experience for Dad, a little emotional at times, the more his story came to life. So the day came to record and I popped down to see him, cameras, lights and mics in hand. We had a coffee, I told him the format, put him at ease, it was no big deal after all. Wow the stories came streaming out, some I had never heard. I would prompt him and nudge him and after an hour his story was told. At the end he smiled and simply said, make me look good. That was a given. Now the real work began, it was important to set his story to the events of the day, news stories, tv

shows and the music from his era, this would set the tone and times he grew up in. I began to understand what I’d taken on and I realised his story would out survive me, would be seen by grandchildren and beyond. This could not be thrown together. It took nearly two months, yes I had work on but it was a mammoth task to complete. To tell it in a way that would be entertaining, insightful and memorable. To do Dad proud, it’s what I owed his memory. It had been a momentous life but it wasn’t all glory. He cried and he laughed as he told it, revealing the moments, the people and animals that had been important to him, his mistakes, successes, his motivations and even his regrets. He painted a picture so clear that anyone watching would feel they knew him, casting an insight into the past when the world was so very different. With the family prodding me to complete it, it became a priority. So with some relief and trepidation I took the film down to show, I hit play, dad watched quietly, ensuring the details were

correct, but watching him closely I saw his tears and smiles as it played. At the end I could see his appreciation, he was both happy, sad and comforted in the knowledge he would not be forgotten.. The years roll by and the video plays on...but sadly Dad has passed. When all said and done, what does it mean to the family? More than we expected, we find it very comforting to watch and when all together we raise a glass. It won’t replace him but it’s the next best thing. The video is a celebration of his life and it got me thinking, everybody has a story to tell, each story is unique and personal and as an editor, there’s no better story to tell. So if you’ve an anniversary, event or a pivotal birthday that you’d like to mark with a film of your life then please get in touch. If you would like to watch his story, contact me at https://www.facebook.com/kevingardam1/ and I’ll forward you a link. Or email direct to: astorytold.film@gmail.com or call 07831 886711

Discover the Secrets of Gin in Nicholson’s #GinFest2017

A

ttention gin fanatics! This summer, Nicholson’s 78 pubs across London and the UK celebrate all things gin with their largest annual GinFest to date, launching on Monday 24th July and running until the end of August. The summer-long festivities will showcase 38 premium gin brands along with a bespoke Barrel-Aged Tanqueray Festival Gin, created exclusively for the festival. An actionpacked programme of masterclasses, gin gigs, gin tours, secret gin parties and a raft of social media giveaways promises to get festival-goers into the gin-swing of things.

The secret is out (one of them!) Nicholson’s love of gin goes way back – founder William Nicholson started his career by running the family gin distillery in London and Nicholson’s are still serving the best gins in many of its original gin palaces today. Nicholson’s have teamed up with iconic brand Tanqueray, adding its highly-awarded spirit to re-purposed whisky barrels for an aged gin with sweet, caramel and vanilla notes. Just 400 litres are available and once it’s gone, it’s gone – so be sure to catch it while you can!

Gin-galore! Gin aficionados will have an excuse to visit their local time and time again as more gin brands than ever participate with the festival. In addition to Barrel-Aged Tanqueray Festival Gin, 38 high-end gins will be on offer including 14 new entries. There’s a range of Navy-Strength (over-proof style gins historically linked to the navy); and Old Toms that herald from the 1700s when gin laws were passed to curb the gin drinking habits on London’s streets. At this time, gin consumption was forced underground – becoming available in secret ‘Puss and Mew’ shops identified by an iconic cat on the door known as ‘Old Tom’. Watch out for the ‘black 16 AUGUST 2017

cat’ in your local Nicholson’s pub for clues revealing the location of your very own Secret Gin Party. Keep your cat’s eyes peeled… Also making an appearance is Nicholson Gin* relaunching this summer and a variety of flavour-led gins including Tarquin’s Cornish Blackberry; Williams Sloe & Mulberry and Warner Edwards Victoria’s Rhubarb. British boutique brands on show include Cotswolds Distillery, Silent Pool, City of London Distillery and Peckham’s very own Little Bird. Teetotallers won’t be excluded from the party as Seedlip, the world’s first premium non-alcoholic spirit, solving the dilemma of ‘what to drink, when you’re not drinking’ will be a prominent feature throughout #GinFest2017.

What’s Going On? The brands involved in #GinFest2017 really are taking this festival business to the next level. Watch out for exclusive events such as ‘Little Bird Fly By’ 1940’s party and the Sipsmith’s Gin Cab, out in full force in Nicholson’s pubs with outdoor spaces. Fever Tree will also be ‘popping up’ in pubs and watch out for a visit from Hendrick’s Cucumber Couriers. For a truly immersive experience, the likes of Cotswolds Distillery, Tarquins, Bathtub Old Tom and Chase will be doing full pub take-overs with masterclasses, sampling and secret gin parties.

#InItToGinIt Don’t forget to download the Nicholson’s app for your ultimate guide to gin this summer, brimming with festival info and prizes including a ‘Spin to Win Gin’ game. Fancy a whole bottle at your local or a two-night break for two (worth more than £1,500) to the City of London Distillery? Sure you do! Follow @Nicholsonspubs on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and watch out for the #InItToGinIt and #GinOclock posts for your chance to win fabulous gin-worthy gifts.

A LOCAL ROYAL VISIT Could you help? The charity has raised over £7 million pounds to date and are determined to continue to work tirelessly to reach their £15 million target. The charity are looking for local residents and businesses to get involved and support the world-class hospital on their doorstep and help them reach their £15 million Redevelopment Appeal target. To make a donation, or for more information on how you can support The RNOH Charity, visit www.rnohcharity.org or call 0208 909 5362/5468.

The Redevelopment Appeal is also raising funds for… • A new children and young people’s ward • Two new adult acute wards • An independent living unit for people with acute spinal cord injuries • A family accommodation unit for the families of children being treated at the hospital.

H

RH Princess Eugenie of York paid a very special visit to Stanmore recently – to speak to patients with spinal cord injuries about how their lives have been transformed by being treated at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Princess Eugenie became Patron of The RNOH Charity’s Redevelopment Appeal after being treated at the hospital for scoliosis as a child. Princess Eugenie visited Stanmore to officially open a much-needed new wing of the hospital’s London Spinal Cord Injury Centre (LSCIC). Currently, patients with spinal cord injuries can wait months for transfer from local hospitals to Stanmore to get the specialist help they need. By expanding the LSCIC patient waiting times will be cut significantly. Princess Eugenie said: “In 2002, when I was 12 years old, I was diagnosed with scoliosis (curvature of the spine), and told that I would need corrective

surgery. This was, of course, a scary prospect for a 12-year-old; I can still vividly remember how nervous I felt in the days and weeks before the operation. But my abiding memories of the RNOH, where the surgery was carried out, are happy ones everyone there was so warm and friendly, and they went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and relaxed. “Without the care I received at the RNOH I wouldn’t look the way I do now; my back would be hunched over. And I wouldn’t be able to talk about scoliosis the way I now do, and help other children who come to me with the same problem. My back problems were a huge part of my life, as they would be for any 12-year-old. Children can look at me now and know that the operation works. I’m living proof of the ways in which the hospital can change people’s lives.” Over £500,000 was raised in total for the LSCIC’s new wing, which included funds from individual donors, sponsored events and charitable trusts.

One of the world’s leading specialist orthopaedic hospitals… The RNOH is one of the world’s leading specialist orthopaedic hospitals, and has been at the cutting edge of orthopaedic care for over 100 years. This is entirely down to the dedication and the expertise of their staff, who operate from a series of 100-year-old buildings and a collection of Portakabins and Nissen huts which date back to the Second World War. Thankfully a long overdue change is currently underway. In 2016 the hospital was given government approval for a major redevelopment project to build a basic NHS orthopaedic hospital - but the RNOH wants more for its patients. As such, the Charity launched a £15 million Redevelopment Appeal, to design and construct a truly world-class, innovative healthcare environment that will bring real improvements in the quality of care and transform the lives of patients. www.rnoh.nhs.uk

The world’s rarest cars in one of the world’s most exclusive settings

T

he Concours of Elegance proclaims itself to be “the most exclusive car park in the world”; a typically understated label for one of the classiest and most incredible motoring events on the global calendar. The venue this year is the breath-taking grounds of Hampton Court Palace; a royal setting which – with its incredible history and beauty – is the perfect pairing for the collection of rare automobiles set to arrive as part of the Concours this September. The focal point is a gathering of more than sixty unique or extremely rare cars, many of which will never have been seen before in the UK – let alone

all in one place. And, just like the palace itself, each car has a story to tell; the 1896 Arnold Benz Motor Carriage on display, for example, was the first car to ever receive a speeding ticket. The driver, Walter Arnold, was travelling 8mph in a 2mph zone and his car wasn’t preceded by a man on foot carrying a red flag – a legal requirement at the time. A policeman gave chase on his bicycle and fined Arnold for his recklessness. From 1922 is a Bentley 3 Litre, which was the first to ever race at the Le Mans 24 Hours race, kickstarting a run of wins for Bentley in 1924 and again in 1927 to 1930. Then there’s the Porsche

There are, of course, plenty of modern masterpieces on display, too. In total, more than a thousand vehicles will enter the grounds of Hampton Court Palace from 1-3 September, including the very latest high performance rarities, including the Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta, Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato and Pagani Huayra. Founder of evo magazine and the Harry’s Garage YouTube channel, Harry Metcalfe, will be bringing together a collection of these incredible modern performance cars. Over the course of the weekend many of the vehicles on display will start their engines to drive through the grounds of the palace and up onto the all-new central stage. Visitors can experience the sights, sounds and smells of some of the most important cars ever produced, while a team of experts enlightens the audience as to what exactly makes these vehicles so special.

he gardens at Benington Lordship have been open to the public for many years starting with Arthur and Lillian Bott in the 1920’s when they supported the National Gardens Scheme. In the 1970’s Harry and Sarah Bott began opening the garden in February so that visitors could see the spectacular Snowdrops around the Norman moat and ruined castle. Richard and Susanna Bott moved into the Lordship in 2005 and, on the suggestion of a friend, they decided to try a Chilli Festival over the August bank holiday weekend. The first Chilli Festival was so successful that it has grown every year and has become an established part of Hertfordshire’s August bank holiday. Now in its 12th year the Chilli Festival has become a three day event with over 6000 visitors. At the core of the festival are the 50 stall holders.

“The first Chilli Festival was so successful that it has grown every year”

26 AUGUST 2017

The stall holders are all independent businesses and fiercely passionate about chillis. Most stallholders grow their own chillis and are enthusiastically knowledgeable about their products. Products on offer include a vast range of sauces, jams, chutneys and pickles. There will also be chilli cheeses, chilli chocolate, and chilli beer and cider. The level of heat varies from a pleasant warmth to the positively volcanic. There will also be food stalls offering the full range of hot food from around the world, from Mexican to Filippino, South African to Lebanese. During the course of the day there will be cooking demonstrations from Chilli Olly and cabaret style entertainment from Bruce Airhead. The day ends with the ever popular chilli eating competition when contestants compete to eat a range of increasingly hot chillis usually culminating with the fearsome Dorset Naga. For 2017 Benington Chilli festival will be on the 26th 27th and 28th August over the bank holiday weekend from 10am till 5pm. Adults £8 and children under 12 free. There will be free parking. COCKTAIL TIME AT AUBERGE DU LAC Matthew Edmonds, Head Chef at Auberge du Lac on the Brocket Hall Estate

W

elcome to the second installment of my new column – bringing you all the news and views from the Auberge du Lac kitchen, or the bar, as is the case this month! Oh yes, we’ve been busy creating – well, just taste-testing for me – the most unique, refreshing, and quite frankly, mind-blowing range of Aperitifs I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting. When our talented restaurant manager, Pedro Miramon, snuck into the kitchen to “borrow” some of the very expensive kelp I’d been using for my new beef dish, the last thing I’d imagined him doing with it was folding it into bottles of gin…But boy am I glad he did. After ten days of watching the seaweed infuse the gin – I’m making it sound more interesting than it was there, but you get my point – we unscrewed the lids to the most delightful smell. It was a delicious attack of the senses that immediately transported you to the seaside. So, it smelt great, but did I really want to taste the sea? As It turns out, I really did. Before we could get our hands on it, though, Pedro whisked the bottles off to his creation station and worked his magic on two very special Aperitifs: The Seaweed G&T and The Seaweed Martini. I don’t think I should even attempt to explain how good they are, it’s something you’ve got 28 AUGUST 2017

to experience to believe – the smell, the taste, the memories of the seaside – yep, it’s impossible to do them justice. Luckily, they were such a hit that they have been added to the Auberge du Lac drinks menu for the foreseeable, along with other new and delicious Pedro creations, such as the Yuzo (a Japanese dessert wine – think limoncello, but so, so much better) G&T and delicious Raspberry Cosmopolitan. Summer is the perfect time to road-test our new Aperitif range – we may not be able to bring the actual seaside to Hertfordshire, but one sip and you’ll think you’re there, which is surely the next best thing?

SUMMER COCKTAILS Seaweed Gin and Tonic • Fill a tall glass with ice • Add 50ml of one month infused seaweed gin • Garnish with a slice of lime • Top up with Fever Tree tonic

Yuzu Gin and Tonic • Fill a tall glass with ice • Pour in 35ml each of Yuzu liquor and Gin (we recommend Tanqueray No10) • Garnish with a slice of lemon • Top up with Fever Tree tonic

resenting over eight weeks of events and more than 90 concerts the festival continues its founder-conductor Henry Wood’s aim of bringing the best classical music to the widest audience. Following its launch last year, the ‘Proms at…’ series returns. As well as eight Proms Chamber Music concerts at Cadogan Hall, the series presents choral music at Southwark Cathedral, music theatre at Wilton’s Music Hall, new and experimental music at the Tanks at Tate Modern, and returns to Bold Tendencies Multi-Storey Car Park in Peckham featuring The Multi-Story Orchestra and Youth Choir. Concerts designed especially for new audiences include Gerard McBurney’s Beyond the Score, which combines actors, projections and live musical examples who explore the history of Dvořák’s ‘New World’ Symphony, and Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony, deconstructed live on stage by Tom Service and conductor Nicholas Collon, before a performance from memory by the Aurora Orchestra. Beechwood Park School A Community in Action

E

dward Balfour, Headmaster at Beechwood Park School in Markyate, announced this month that the cumulative total raised for Keech Hospice Care by the Beechwood Park School Parents’ Association (BPSPA) and pupils had reached a staggering £200,000. Keech Hospice Care is a local charity based near Luton, which provides free, specialist care for adults and children with life-limiting conditions as well as vital support for their family and friends. Beechwood Park School has had a close connection with Keech for over 19 years and, during this time, donations have enabled the funding of programmes such as “Girls Aloud”, a club offering friendship and practical support to some of the young teenagers supported by the charity, and to ‘Sparklers’, a sibling bereavement programme. Regional and Events Fundraising Manager for Keech, Mark Relf, who attended a celebratory assembly at Beechwood Park, thanked the School for their commitment to the charity over many years and explained to the pupils some of the work that the charity does. Mr Balfour thanked the BPSPA for its amazing achievements, saying “Beechwood Park is delighted be involved with such a worthy cause and to be part of these programmes which make such a significant difference to people’s lives”. He added that “the School is delighted to continue its links with Keech

Hospice Care long into the future.” Beechwood Park, a School for over 530 pupils, still retains the family feel of a smaller School and has an extremely active Parents’ Association who contribute time, talent and enthusiasm to produce many events, for adults and children. Whilst fun plays a major part in these events, the underlying drive is the support and care for local charities and for the School community itself. The next big fundraising event on the horizon for the BPSPA is a Venetian Masked Summer Ball. Whilst pupils are enthusiastically decorating masks to adorn the walls of the School’s Great Hall and marquee, parent volunteers are meticulously planning the event and seeking sponsors. Guests will enjoy a dazzling evening in the School’s Queen Anne-style buildings and the Capability Brown landscaped grounds. The Parents’ Association has recently funded projects including a new swimming pool complex and an outdoor classroom in support of the School’s Forest School facilities. Beechwood Park is an independent day and flexiboarding School for boys and girls age 3-13. The School is located 15 minutes from Harpenden, 20 minutes from St Albans, Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead. “I just look so old. The market’s full of youngsters in their 20s, I can’t believe that any interviewer will take me seriously”

Introducing…

My very own(It’sfacelift procedure non-surgical!)

W

hen Susanna came to see me she was stuck in a rut. In her mid-40s, she had been working as a supply teacher for several years. Although she was desperate to apply for more permanent and more senior jobs, she lacked the self-confidence to do so. Susanna was convinced that the loose skin on her face made her look far older than she really was, and that interviewers would discriminate against her because of her age. While she was desperate for a cosmetic procedure to tighten her skin and restore her looks, she was also very nervous about her pupils and colleagues knowing she’d had work done. It was vital, she said, that any change was as subtle as possible. In the meanwhile, she scoured the industry press for adverts for permanent teaching positions – and applied for none of them. It was around that time that I finished developing my very own non-surgical face-lifting technique, called the R-Lift. It is so revolutionary that, I’m delighted to announce, last month we received a trademark for it! I started thinking about the technique four years

48 AUGUST 2017

ago, when I began seeing lots of people with what I call “the pillow look”. Their cheeks had been filled out in an effort to lift their skin, making them look, to my mind, a bit like hamsters. It was trendy at the time (!), but I knew that it wasn’t right for our patients, who wanted a much more natural look. Over the subsequent 18 months, I worked to develop a procedure that gave the same effect as a facelift, but without patients having to go under the knife; using a minimum number of needles; and at a fraction of the cost. Most importantly, it needed to leave patients looking normal – not fake. With the R-Lift we inject small amounts of dermal fillers into as few as two points on either side of the face. Unlike ordinary fillers, we run a cannula beneath the skin’s surface, to release the fibrous bands that fuse skin to muscle and this fades deep wrinkles. The minimal use of needles means pain is unlikely - 99% of patients don’t require any anesthetic and bruising is extremely rare. It also meant we could keep the cost down to £900 at the lower end. And the results? The R-Lift refreshes and restores your skin, making you look younger – but still like you. People won’t know you’ve had anything done, they’ll just think you’re looking great. Take Susana. She had the R-Lift about 18 months ago, and hasn’t looked back since. Within weeks, she noticed such a difference that she had the confidence and self-assurance to apply for the jobs she had previously shied away from. That insecure and self-doubting teacher who had approached me months before was given a permanent teaching job soon after. When I heard from her recently, she had been given additional responsibilities.

This procedure is only available here at Riverbanks. If you’d like to find out more, please hit ‘reply’. We’re really excited about the new trademark, and would love to tell you more about how it can help you look fabulous, too.

rom the catwalks to the red carpet, slicked back hair has been EVERYWHERE this season. And no wonder - the sleek style is equal parts edgy and polished, and because the rest of your hair is down it’s much easier to achieve than a complicated updo. At the SS17 shows, hair stylists went down two routes. There was the perfectly preened and smoothed look, as seen at Balmain, Carolina Herrera and Marchesa, or the artfully messy wet-look vibe seen at Markus Lupfer. Can’t decide which to try? Eat right for good sight

A

balanced diet is not only good for general health, but can also be helpful in maintaining good eyesight. Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and broccoli, nuts, oily fish and eggs can contain vitamins A, C and E and/or lutein and zeaxanthin. These act as ‘antioxidants’ and help to protect the eye, particularly the retina from ageing conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Advice AMD is a painless eye condition which can cause you to gradually lose central vision, which is what you see when focusing straight ahead of you. As vision becomes blurred, reading can become difficult and colours may start to dull. AMD affects over 600,000 people in the UK and is the biggest cause of loss of eyesight, which is why it is important to take care of your eyes, and not to ignore any signs of visual discomfort and visit your GP or optometrist. It is advisable for everyone to eat a rich and varied diet, particularly containing the foods rich in antioxidants, mentioned above. In people who have already developed AMD, they may benefit from taking additional supplements which potentially can reduce the risk of progression of AMD by 25%. It is advisable to be examined by an Ophthalmologist beforehand to determine whether you are likely to benefit from supplements. Don’t forget that wearing UV protection sunglasses in bright conditions can also help. 58 AUGUST 2017

Some patients with AMD will develop the ‘wet’ form, which causes sudden reduced vision and distortion. Fortunately, there are now very effective AntiVEGF therapies which are able to preserve and restore vision, which would otherwise be lost - with the key being early diagnosis and treatment. In patients with advanced AMD requiring the use of a handheld magnifier, there are surgical options including the insertion of a lens implant to help with reading vision. Cataract surgery can also be an option for patients with AMD which can potentially improve vision and brighten colours they see. It is important to be assessed by a suitably qualified Ophthalmologist to determine whether you would be a good candidate for any of these procedures. By eating a healthy and balanced diet, including plenty of fruit, vegetables and water, as well as moderating your alcohol consumption, you can reduce your risk of developing AMD.

Meet the consultant Mr Venki Sundaram is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, specialising in medical retinal diseases (e.g. macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion) and cataract surgery. Having performed thousands of cataract operations, retinal injections and laser procedures to the highest standard, he has ample experience in treating these eye conditions, including performing surgery for patients with additional retinal problems, with excellent results. www.spireharpenden.com

The pedestal washbasin and free-standing bath, wrapped in countless crystals, sparkle glamour and luxury never seen before.

The truth about the current temporary relaxation of the planning laws in relation to Conservatories and Extensions

W

hilst homeowners can in theory have larger extensions at present, the temporary rules are not a blank cheque and there are still plenty of legalities that need to be adhered to, so before adding an extension make sure you have understood what you can and cannot do before having something built that may end up being a mistake. According to the PlanningPortal.gov.uk website an extension or addition to your house in England is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, subject to the following limits and conditions (for a full list of all the rules, visit the planning portal itself): 1) No more than half the area of land around the “original house would be covered by additions 72 AUGUST 2017

or other buildings. 2) No extension forward of the principal elevation or side elevation fronting a highway. No extension to be higher than the highest part of the roof. 3) Single-storey rear extension must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres if an attached house or by four metres if a detached house. 4) In addition, outside Article 2(3) designated land and Sites of Special Scientific Interest the limit is increased to 6m if an attached house and 8m if a detached house until 30 May 2019. 5) These temporary increased limits (between 3m and 6m for terraced and semi-detached houses and between 4m and 8m for detached houses respectively) are subject to the prior notification of the proposal to the Local Planning Authority

and the implementation of a neighbour consultation scheme. If objections are received, the proposal might not be allowed. 6) Maximum height of a single-storey rear extension of four metres. 7) Maximum eaves height of an extension within two metres of the boundary of three metres. 8) Maximum eaves and ridge height of extension no higher than existing house. 9) Side extensions to be single storey with maximum height of four metres and width no more than half that of the original house. 10) Materials to be similar in appearance to the existing house. 11) No verandas, balconies or raised platforms. The above government guidance reflects temporary increases to the size limits for singlestorey rear extensions (which commenced in May 2013) that must be fully completed by 30 May 2019, under the temporary relaxation permitted under the associated Neighbourhood Consultation Scheme. Before any homeowner gets too excited, the extra temporary increased extension size limits for conservatories etc. are still subject to planning law, and in practice only going to be permitted if not a single neighbour objects, and your local council agree that your written submission and the professionally drawn plans of your proposals that they require comply with both planning law and the Building Regulations. A downside of the Neighbours Consultation Scheme is that you have to wait 8 weeks for a determination. Plus, if any neighbour objects, your local council is probably only going to allow development if it falls within the limits of Permitted Development (i.e. a maximum of 3m projection from the back of the original rear wall for attached houses and 4m for detached houses). They will then advise you that should you want to have a larger development considered, you will need to submit a full planning application. Consequently, the smart way to go in the first place is to apply for full planning permission should you want to have an extension greater than these sizes, as this immediately saves you 8 weeks, and if done in consultation with your local councils

“Before any homeowner gets too excited, the extra temporary increased extension size limits for conservatories etc. are still subject to planning law”

and planning professionals, you’ll stand a far better chance of gaining an approval. The new temporary increases don’t apply to “designated land”, Conservation Areas, Listed Buildings or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If your property is part of a relatively new development, your local council may have withdrawn your PD Rights, which would mean you’d need to submit a planning application, even if it was say only wanting to add a 3m x 3m conservatory onto the original rear elevation. So before you embark on any extension it is always worth checking your property has sufficient PD Rights still intact to carry out the project you are looking to have done. Enhancing the Home with an Indoor Pool Paul Green and his wife had always wanted an indoor pool, a dream that was made possible when they moved to a new home and had the space to extend.

T

hey began researching companies in the area that would be able to meet their requirements. Keen to use a well-known firm that was reputable and a specialist in the area, the couple wanted to find a company that had the capability to manage the whole project, removing the need for individual contractors. The Green’s research and local connections led them to Origin, the UK’s original luxury indoor pool company.

78 AUGUST 2017

Origin is the way Forward

Paul contacted Origin and arranged a meeting. “It was really good to see the owner of the business taking a personal interest. He said all the right things and the advice he gave was great. They organised an onsite visit for us so that we could get a feel for the work they had previously done. This really solidified our decision to choose them”. Paul also had a local contact who lived in the area and had experience with Origin. He gave the company a glowing recommendation.

Getting it Right Origin worked alongside the Green family to design their dream pool. It was going to be an extension of their home and needed to match the exterior of

the house. It was essential it didn’t stand out but internally, they wanted a high quality, modern and contemporary style. Paul adds: “We drew a lot of inspiration from pictures of other high end pools and I used these to demonstrate to Origin and the architect what we wanted.” The couple wanted a bright and spacious area. Colour changing lighting and iridescent tiling which reflects the light perfectly, both provide the feel of luxury. In addition to creating a relaxing space with a spa pool, it was also important to Paul that he could use the pool to maintain his fitness. The space to build an Olympic sized pool wasn’t available, so Paul decided to install swim jets that create resistance as he swims, providing a more challenging exercise regime.

Brilliant Builders During the project, the couple were kept up to date with progress. The Origin team were available to chat through the project whenever they wanted, including regular meetings to discuss finishes and make other important decisions as they went along. Paul was extremely impressed with the construction team. Despite undertaking a huge build project, they kept disruption to a minimum and didn’t knock through into the Green’s property until it was essential. This helped to keep the property secure throughout. “The team were great, they kept the site as clean as they could and they were all extremely friendly. Once you get over the mental hurdle that your property is going to be a bit chaotic for a few months, this is a really exciting part of the project as you begin to see your pool take shape”.

Paul and his family couldn’t be happier with the space they have created: “I’ve always used swimming as a form of exercise. I used to visit a local hotel three times a week before we had our pool installed and this proved difficult if I was working late. Now, I use the pool five times a week and when the rest of the family visit, they have a fantastic space for leisure and relaxation. Especially our granddaughter, she’s three years old and just loves splashing around when she visits.” Paul looks at it as more than a pool though; it’s an extension of his home: “The good thing about the space is that it’s a room in its own right. Although my wife and I may have slightly different agendas when it comes to the pool – I primarily use it for fitness and she will use it for leisure. It’s also a very pleasant space to, relax and do things such as have a drink or read a book. Our friends are amazed by the complexity of the design!” So, would the Green’s recommend Origin? “Absolutely, they were honest, realistic and clearly experienced – they had the whole package.” Origin has over 35 years’ experience building award-winning swimming pools. The company can work with you to build your dream pool house, just like they did for Paul and his wife. To speak to the Origin experts please contact 01895 453996

Summer’s top interior trends words: Gabrielle Fagan, Press Association

P

interest is the site where decoristas love to lust over luxury. Gabrielle Fagan discovers its style winners and inspiring ideas If you’re rocking a Seventies vibe by piling on the pot plants for an outdoor/indoor theme, working a boho vibe with a high-back rattan peacock chair, or keeping it simple with eco-friendly pared-back kitchen designs, then you’re ahead of the decor game. Those are the fashion-forward trends identified by Pinterest, the social media site where millions find inspiration for their homes, and which has recently revealed its new Best of Pinterest UK Interior Awards, whose judges included designers Matthew Williamson and Kelly Hoppen. “Pinterest is the ideal tool for creatives,” says Hoppen. “I only wish this inspirational and informative platform was around when I first started in design 40 years ago. It’s so interesting to be able to look at the trends and styles of people worldwide and how each individual, culture or country interpret those.” We’re all getting braver about experimenting in our homes according to Adele Cooper, UK and Ireland country manager at Pinterest. “The Interior Awards highlight that people are adventurous with their home decor ideas and confident to experiment with colours, textiles and even DIY to personalise their living spaces.”

IT’S ALL ABOUT SHAPES & SIZES

Here are the key trends that emerged from the awards... DREAMY & DIY Sustainable home decorating is on the rise, with Britons growing more confident about DIY and making the most of inexpensive materials and discovering plywood kitchens (which recorded 182% more saves than last year). Homes are no longer running with one colour scheme, with printed wallpaper recording 250% more saves than last year and navy bedrooms up 182%. GET THE LOOK: John Lewis’s scooped Best Dream Bedroom award with its blue setting featuring its Croft Collection Skye Bed Frame, Double, £699; Croft Collection linen bedding collection, from £20 to £135, and House by John Lewis Jersey Bedspread, Navy £40. Plywood’s a favoured choice for those who want a ‘green’ living style. Sustainable Kitchens is one of the companies specialising in eco-friendly design. Its kitchen, featuring plywood cabinetry, starts from £25,000, and was a runner-up for Best Kitchen. 82 AUGUST 2017

Maths may not be your strong point but featuring geometric shapes is essential if you want your home style to add up, according to Pinterest. Hexagons featured 93% more than last year, with herringbone tiles running a close second, and circular mirrors third. INTERIOR LUST-HAVES Some pieces just hit the right decor sweet spot and the outright winner of the Pinterest Lust-have award was a Loaf Thankster sofa, from £1,195 with the runner-up an Oliver Bonas Luxe Round Bamboo Drinks Trolley, with marble top, £395. A Penn desk, £399, with matching wall shelves, £99, from Made.com won the best workspace idea award. A lightfilled space with Velux windows was chosen by Pinterest users in Glasgow as one of the regional winners of the awards.

Alternatively, show off all the angles with a Green Oversized Geometric Wall Mural from Murals Wallpaper, which also has a stunning Neutral Shades World Map Wallpaper Mural, both from £25 per square metre. All murals are custom-sized and made to order. If money’s no object, a Jonathan Charles Geometry Cabinet, £4,719 from Sweetpea & Willow, is a masterclass in marquetry and conjures an optical geometric illusion. 84 AUGUST 2017

HOME FAKEOVERS

BRING OUTDOORS IN Houseplants - the hip decorating statement of style from the late Sixties and early Seventies - are back in vogue and create a lush outdoor/indoor vibe. They’re particularly popular for living rooms and for conjuring an exotic, steamy atmosphere in a bathroom, especially hanging plants in a shower (up 302% on last year). Houseplants are in tune with our current passion for embracing nature and its colour palette - green is leading the colour chart this year and Pinterest research showed it’s a favourite for tiles. GET THE LOOK: Classic Victorian green tiles are having a moment as they’re a favoured choice for kitchens and bathrooms. Original Style has a square Victorian Green Field Tile, £84.95 per square metre. If you’re not green-fingered, there’s an array of maintenance-free faux plants to choose from. A Succulent Arrangement With Pot, £80, Sweetpea & Willow.

TURN BACK THE CLOCK Vibrant colour choices are also inspired by the Seventies - think mustard, orange, greens and even splashes of red. They bring interest and character and help shake up spaces dominated by neutrals. According to the research, there’s also a revival for shag pile rugs, record players and that boho retro piece, a peacock chair. GET THE LOOK: Lounge back in a Peacock 86 AUGUST 2017

If you’re on the move - a renter rather than an owner - you need savvy, temporary solutions to smarten a space. Reusable wallpaper (up 344% on last year) is a home decor hero and can stun as a statement on one wall, glam up a chest of drawers, and is becoming a firm favourite for children’s rooms. Bulky wardrobes eat space but simple clothing racks, rails or ladder storage are slimmer, and your favourite clothes can become an eye-catching display. Turn on the style cheaply by jazzing up a room with new legs for a sofa or handles for cupboards, and use vintage trunks and baskets for storage. GET THE LOOK: Florals are an easy way to add colour and pattern and Rosentapete by Coloray has a design of bold pink blooms on its self-adhesive reusable wallpaper, £96.73 a roll, DaWanda. One of my favourite wallpaper companies is Sian Zeng and it has a London Tree fabric sticker, £195, which would please adults or children alike. Functional, stylish storage is a staple at Ikea and its Elvarli white bamboo storage units, two sections £347, is a winner. Pretty up a cupboard with dragonlfly Glass Cupboard Knobs, £4.20 each (reduced from £6), L’Atelier Natalia Willmott.
