It was at his father’s business in St. Albans that he begin designing and making Jewellery after having completed his bench training with a leading London goldsmith and designer. Having enjoyed twelve consecutive years of design awards from the Diamond Trading Company or de Beers as it was then, Chris built his reputation through selling his original designs to jewellery retailers throughout the UK.

Christmas Cracker launches festive season in St Albans District

Thousands of people celebrated the return of the St Albans Christmas Cracker – the spectacular event that launches the District’s festive season. The street festival – cancelled last year because of COVID – took place in the City Centre on Sunday 21 November with streets closed to traffic to create a safe and vibrant atmosphere.

Details of the full Christmas programme for St Albans District will be available at enjoystalbans.com. 22 DECEMBER 2021

A

mong the attractions were live music at two stages, Santa’s grotto, scores of market stalls, funfair rides, low-noise pyrotechnics and street performers. There was also a children’s Christmas arts and crafts marquee and a safe zone where people could go if they needed some peace and quiet. Much of the family-friendly entertainment was free with something to suit people of all ages. The event, organised by St Albans City and District Council, saw the City Centre’s Christmas lights being lit up in phases. Among the popular light installations returning to the City Centre were the glittering carriage and the giant bauble Councillor Mandy McNeil, Vice-Chair of the Council’s Regeneration and Business Committee who has lead responsibility for the Christmas Cracker, said: “This was a fantastic, exciting occasion that has got the festive season in St Albans District off to a glorious start. “There were a huge number of amazing attractions for people of all ages and interests to enjoy and many magical moments as the light installations were switched on at various times. “As well as providing our residents and visitors with memorable entertainment, the Christmas Cracker also gave our local economy a massive boost. “Our wonderful shops, restaurants, bars and cafes benefited along with our market traders from

the many extra visitors to the City Centre. “I’m sure many of those who were visiting St Albans for the first time will have been greatly impressed by the cracking atmosphere and will come back soon to sample more. “We could not put on an event like this without the support of local businesses and a number of organisations like St Albans BID and I thank them all for their efforts. The BID, for example, provided the main lights as well as sponsorship funding and helped to advertise and promote the event.” A number of anti-COVID measures were taken at the event which was outdoors and a lower risk than an indoor gathering. People were asked to stay at home if they had any Covid symptoms and take a lateral flow test before coming to the event to ensure they were negative. Surfaces and touch points in the event area were sanitised throughout by a dedicated cleaning staff. Free disposable masks were available and there were also hand sanitiser stations. Cllr McNeil said: “We appealed to the good sense of people to take precautions and I am confident that they did so. “We are very conscious of the fact that the pandemic is still with us and made sure the event complied with current Government guidelines.”

OVO P R E S E N TS

‘THE CHIMES’ BY CHARLES DICKENS FREE open air performances in St Albans City on December 9th, 16th, 22nd at 5pm OVO will stage a piece of classic Victorian street theatre over three afternoons in December in St Albans city centre with a promenade version of Charles Dickens’ novella, ‘The Chimes’.

26 DECEMBER 2021

S

etting the audience in the centre of the action, ‘The Chimes’ – directed by Matt Strachan – will take shoppers, audiences and passers-by on a journey around the city while the story of Meg (Emilia Harrild, Vinegar Tom at the Maltings Theatre) and Richard (Lewis Jenkins, Les Liaisons Dangereuses at the Maltings Theatre), a bright young couple living in a harsh Victorian world, unfolds around them. Dickens wrote ‘The Chimes – A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In’ (to give it its full title!) a year after completing ‘A Christmas Carol’. OVO’s production will imagine the audience as Toby ‘Trotty’ Veck, the protagonist of Dickens’ story who plies his messenger trade from the church steps (under the chimes in the bell tower). Trotty’s daughter Meg and her fiancé Richard are the central characters together with various classic Dickens creations including the Narrator, the gnarly Alderman Cute, and The Goblin of the Bells played by Anna Franklin (above) (Peter Pan, Regina Monologues, A Winter’s Tale all at The Maltings Theatre). Matt Strachan is an award-winning director who will be adapting and directing ‘The Chimes’, his first directing outing for OVO. Matt won this

year’s London Pub Theatres Standing Ovation Award for Best Adaptation for ‘Tier Three Sisters’ which was performed by Knuckledown Theatre at the Hope in Islington, London. Matt talks about ‘The Chimes’: “Charles Dickens was a master of character. What’s so exciting about ‘The Chimes’ is that it provides a timeless perspective on humanity through a collection of unique and compelling personalities that reveal the story of the young couple at its centre. I can’t wait for our incredible cast - Emilia, Lewis and Anna - to take this production onto the streets of St Albans, an ideal location for Dickens’ novella. “The plan is to promenade the production around some of St Albans’ best known landmarks including St Peter’s Church, the Town Hall, Market Place, the Clock Tower, Abbey Mill Lane and the Cathedral as well as a few more surprise destinations along the way. I’m really looking forward to sharing our version of a Dickensian Christmas with St Albans residents, visitors, shoppers and anybody passing by who fancies joining us!” Says OVO Artistic Director Adam Nichols: “I’m very excited that we’ll be presenting Matt’s version of ‘The Chimes’ with three of our most accomplished and popular local actors. The production has been made possible with the support of the brilliant team at St Albans Business Improvement District and we hope it will help to attract visitors to the city centre in the run up to Christmas. “While the story centres on the classic Dickensian subject of the underbelly of Victorian society, ‘The Chimes’ promises a life-affirming perspective and a positive message that is completely contemporary. We’ll have music, drama, audience involvement and a walk through some of St Albans’ loveliest streets to find out what happens to Meg and Richard. I think audiences will love the opportunity of seeing Victorian drama at its best and I suspect will lap up the opportunity of getting involved, just as they did when we presented our Shakespeare pageant around the city centre in 2016.” ovo.org.uk

NOW OPEN: The Deli on Verulam

T

here’s a new business on the block, the Verulam Road block to be precise. The Deli on Verulam opened it’s doors last Monday after an extensive refurbishment from it’s former use as a printing shop. Located next door to The Ivy and opposite The Pudding Stop, the new deli is sandwiched between two of St Albans most loved haunts. Local founders Alex Addison & Hannah Petrouis have set out to provide an experienceled deli in the heart of town, where the joy is as much in the store itself as the produce within it. With the emphasis on celebrating local producers and artisans, the store introduced ‘journey to the shelf ’ cards, detailing the story of the local person behind each product on the shelf. The Deli Counter itself showcases Neals Yard Dairy produce and Crown & Que antipasti meats, with the likes of Colston Basset Stilton and Martlemass Beef taking centre stage. Coffee, porridge, pastries and breakfast pots are available from 8.00am daily, a gourmet salad bar, sandwiches and bagels are then available over lunchtime for the grab & go crowd. Extensive outdoor seating makes The Deli on Verulam the perfect place to wrap up warm and enjoy the festive goings on. Anyone that takes up on that offer will also notice details of ‘The Hub on Verulam’, the local couple’s next venture opening up next door to The Deli, in March next year. Set on the iconic site of the old Loch Fyne restaurant, The Hub is currently undergoing a huge 3 month refurbishment to become a members club with screening rooms,

The 2 screening rooms, named ‘The Terrace’ and ‘The Box’ look set to impress on the rendered visuals that have recently been put up, they’ll show live sport, independent cinema, comedy and community events every day of the week. This December, the resident Company of Ten presents Mary Norton’s enchanting classic, The Borrowers, in a wonderful stage adaptation by Charles Way. Arrietty, Pod and Homily Clock are ‘borrowers’ who live under the floorboards in an old country house. They exist on the scraps they collect from the ‘human beans’ who live upstairs. Arrietty can’t wait to explore the world outside, but when she is discovered by a human boy, the family must flee to safety, encountering many adventures as they search for a new home. The Company of Ten is run to professional standards, show-casing outstanding quality theatre to the local community, at affordable prices, with everything from family classics to razor-sharp contemporary theatre, local writing and world premieres. We’re always looking for enthusiastic people to join us, so if you are interested in any aspect of theatre, from stage lighting to prop making, set building, costume, front of house or acting, have a look at our website: https://www.abbeytheatre.org. uk/ for more details. COVER STORY

MAP STORES, HARPENDEN

When did Map Stores launch and why? The website, was launched in September 2018. The physical store in Harpenden took on it true form (as it is now) in March 2020. At the start of 2017 I was at a crossroads, following a couple of big life events, I had decided to take 6 months off to reflect, rest and recuperate. During this time I started the business concept and it just grew from there. I’m not very good at doing nothing.

“I had worked in the fashion industry for 20 years as a product developer, garment technologist and technical manager”

What were you doing before? I had worked in the fashion industry for 20 years as a product developer, garment technologist and technical manager. Working with high end brands, High Street and online retailers. It was a career I loved and it had taken me all over the world but I could start to feel a wind of change, so it was the right time to do something different. Where are you based and how important is this to you? We are based in the beautiful Hertfordshire town of Harpenden. I discovered Harpenden after doing a pop up shop there in Easter 2019 and found that there was a huge demand in the local area for a design led concept store. It is a very London centric demographic, yet there was nowhere to go, but into London, if you had an

What’s different about Map Stores? We have always stayed true to a very authentic aesthetic. One that is driven by loyal values of simple design and functionality. Every product or brand we bring to our customers is considered for its simplicity, craftsmanship and quality, to evoke a sense of well-being and to cultivate a stylish, functional and contemporary lifestyle. What makes a great ‘Map Stores’ product? We strive for all our products to have value, design and function. To have meaning to our customers and to perform in their homes. A Map Stores product should be an investment, have longevity, sustainability and become better over time.

interest in Scandinavian inspired homeware. In Harpenden, there is a unique, old school sense of community and a real vibe to the High Street, which is hard to find. Who’s in the team and what do they do? We are a tiny, but perfectly formed team. There is me, ‘Jack of All Trades’. Then there is Fabian, who is the Operations Director, a master of all things logistical and who makes sure the day to day running of the store is smooth. Including the soulful sounds, carefully considered to create the right ambiance, which is very important to the vibe we want for our customers. Then there is Emma, Creative Director and a huge influence on the product and concept side of the business. We have all come from a similar background in fashion and so, as a team, we have always spoken a very similar language, which is a big part of our strength as a team. Not one of us could do what we do without the other and I am so grateful for the dynamic we have.

What’s your favourite piece from Map Stores and why? My personal favourite is the Menu Carrie Table Lamp, designed by Norm Architects. The perfect example of Scandinavian design principles: bringing together simple design and function. mapstores.co.uk

ABOUT 2CELLOS 2CELLOS is the eclectic, international sensation comprised of two classically trained cellists who reached video viral fame on YouTube from their 2011 rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.” The pair, Luka Šulić and HAUSER, have since created a name for themselves with their electric and dynamic playing style. The duo has performed alongside musical greats Steven Tyler, Andrea Bocelli, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age and George Michael, to name a few, and was handpicked by Sir Elton John to perform both as an opener as well as part of the iconic singer’s live band. 2CELLOS are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, and are working hard to continue reaching new stratospheres. 38 DECEMBER 2021

THE CONNAUGHT CHRISTMAS TREE 2021 T

By artist duo Annie Morris and Idris Khan unveiled in Mayfair

he Connaught Christmas Tree 2021 has been unveiled outside The Connaught and this year, has been designed by friends of the hotel, influential London-based artist duo Annie Morris and Idris Khan OBE. The magnificent British sourced Nordmann Fir tree, stands 9m tall on Carlos Place and is surrounded by three interpretations of Morris’s Stack sculptures – her most recognisable body of work. Morris’s Stack sculptures comprise of irregular spheres, precariously arranged into tall columns, and painted in vivid hues. These have been recreated in 2D especially for The Connaught Christmas Tree. The colourful spheres are individually lit, some with over 1600 glittering lights. Stacked with staggering scale, these precarious towers represent the idea of uncertainty that has come to define our lives, particularly as a result of the pandemic, and that beauty can be born from the unknown and positive light can be found in the darkness. Topping the tree is a shining figure which represents one of Morris’s ‘Flower Women’ a recurring motif that appears in her work. Khan’s creative focuses on an often forgotten element of a Christmas tree – the base. He has designed this with ‘support’ in mind – the base reinforces Morris’s sculptures representing the love and support at the very heart of relationships and family. Surrounding the base, is a two way infinity mirror illuminated in Khan’s signature blue, featured in his recent paintings. Engraved on the mirror are the words ‘Merry Christmas’ translated into over a hundred languages, creating multiple layers of script. This represents the importance

40 DECEMBER 2021

“The magnificent British sourced Nordmann Fir tree, stands 9m tall on Carlos Place and is surrounded by three interpretations of Morris’s Stack sculptures”

of the coming together of all faiths and cultures throughout the festive time. “We are so excited to create this year’s iconic Christmas tree at The Connaught. Our idea was to make a tree that represents home and togetherness, through language and colour” said Morris and Khan. This is the sixth year The Connaught Christmas Tree has been designed by a celebrated artist, past trees include Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley, Tracey Emin, Michael Craig-Martin and Sean Scully. The Connaught has long established itself as playing a significant role in the art world amassing a considerable art collection over its 170 year history. The Connaught Christmas Tree 2021 will shine bright on Carlos Place until the first week of January, 2022. the-connaught.co.uk

Kim Jones, Artistic Director of Dior Men’s Collections, designs

CLARIDGE’S CHRISTMAS TREE 2021

C

laridge’s, London’s legendary Mayfair hotel, has announced that this year its much-anticipâtéd Christmas Tree is designed by Kim Jones, Artistic Director of the Dior men’s collections. Named The Celestial Snow Globe, this outstanding creation is a magnificent take on the classic winter decoration, subtly mixing Holographic projections with a white Toile – recalling the emblematic haute couture Ateliers’ Toile – to produce a poetic interplay of transparency, in which Kim Jones pays tribute to the Dior savoir faire. In another homage to the House’s heritage, the Christmas baubles that seem to float in orbit around the tree recall iconic Dior emblems. Perched atop the tree, Kim Jones’ faithful canine companion, Cookie, delicately hugs Monsieur Dior’s lucky star. Commenting on the collaboration, Kim Jones said, “It is a great honour for me to design the Christmas Tree for Claridge’s and thus bring Dior, London and the Christmas spirit together in this iconic place.” Claridge’s co-owner, Paddy McKillen, also said, “Christmas has always been a truly special time of the year for us here at Claridge’s, and we are delighted, for the first time in many years, to welcome a homegrown designer to create our illustrious tree.” The Claridge’s Christmas Tree has long been a seasonal London landmark and symbolises the start of the festive season in the capital, drawing visitors and Londoners alike to admire its creative design. This is the eleventh year Claridge’s has invited one of its distinguished guests to reinterpret the tree in their own distinctive style.

54 DECEMBER 2021

ABOUT CLARIDGE’S At the centre of London’s Mayfair, Claridge’s, part of the Maybourne Hotel Group, embodies grand English style, timeless glamour and impeccable, intuitive and highly tailored service. It is London’s art deco jewel, and home to elegant rooms and suites. From London’s finest afternoon tea in the Foyer and Michelin star dining from Daniel Humm at Davies and Brook, to vintage champagnes and cocktails at Claridge’s Bar, all are part of the hotel’s unique splendor and charm. claridges.co.uk

The Local Village Pub with outstanding food... The Spotted Dog in Flamstead has recently reopended after an amazing revamp and let me tell you it’s no ordinary local pub.

A

s soon as you walk into the pub you sense the feel of the warm, rustic atmosphere with a trendy twist - I can only explain what I felt as a buzzing vibe with beautiful smells and greeted by a big welcoming smiles from the staff. The main bar has a lovely seating area with a beautiful logged fire, perfect if you’re just popping in for a drink or for a delicious meal. They are absolutely dog friendly, but kindly ask that dogs are kept in the front bar where there is a dog water bowl and treats on the bar. Up a few steps and you are in the restaurant area which is perfect for family meals and couples. The restaurant decor is super cosy with low wooden beams, candles, fairy lights and beautifully set tables. Our lovely waitress was quick to greet us and seat us at our table, she told us that the Executive Chef was infact one of London’s finest. We hadn’t seen the menu at this point but we already knew we were in for a treat. The manager Garry went through the specials of the day and also his wine recommendations - I love this touch as I’m no expert so it’s good to hear what wines go best with different foods or courses. So after a tough decision I opted for the salmon starter and my husband went for the pâté - as it was Sunday there was no doubt we were both going to go for the roast beef main. Incredible - honestly the food was to die for. The cream sauce on my salmon tasted so unique, the homemade chutney with the pâté - well put it this way if they were selling this by the jar, I would have cleared the shelf. I did ask for the recipe but it is top secret so we will definitely have to go back. The Roast beef was everything you would want from a hearty sunday dinner, nice and hot, perfectly pink 56 DECEMBER 2021

meat, fluffy yorkshires alongside winter vegetables with the perfect amount of crunch and a serving of delicious home made gravy - simply stunning. We were so happy and comfortably full from our meals we had convinced ourselves desert was unnecessary, until Garry came and twisted our arm. I went for the Eton Mess which was actually light and refreshing after such a big meal, my husband who had less of a sweet tooth went for the cheeseboard which came with a selection of 3 local cheeses and caramelised chutney. Im glad Garry insisted we went for 3 courses. The Spotted Dog is a Must visit, whether you’re local to flamstead or not, its well worth the journey. There is nowhere else in the local area quite like it. If you want a local pub with London quality 5 star food, with friendly staff at reasonable prices this is the pub for you. Also they boast a more relaxed lunch bar menu, a highly extensive coffee menu so what more do you want. The perfect place this Christmas... thespotteddog.co.uk

There are many more parks and open spaces to discover in London, all bringing a bit of countryside into the capital. 64 DECEMBER 2021

HIGHGATE CEMETERY Although it may seem a little macabre, Highgate Cemetery is one of England’s greatest treasures and one of the most peaceful, idyllic walks in the city. Notable writers, musicians, philosophers including George Eliot, Karl Marx, Jean Simmons, George Michael and Malcolm McLaren… and some rather well-off unknown individuals are laid to rest here. It has incredible architecture, mausoleums, and individual graves amongst an eerie gothic setting. A guided tour is well worth the cost, giving insight and knowledge of its fascinating history.

BATTERSEA PARK With its gardens and sculptures offering the chance to escape through botanics and brief history lessons to far-flung destinations around the world, Battersea Park is one of the prettiest and most varied green spaces to walk in London. The Grade II-listed, 200-acre park boasts a spot of inner-city tranquillity - the Old English Garden: a walled hideaway in which a lily-covered pond and vibrant foliage is tended to by a Chelsea Flower Show gold medal-winner. Battersea Park also holds a children’s zoo, a boating lake, and a playground.

The Other Side of Lockdown

H

elping teenagers become confident, independent adults after 18 months of lockdown means grasping new opportunities and stepping out of comfort zones. Drawing on her school career experience, Lara Péchard, Head at St Margaret’s School in Bushey, has some advice on how parents can encourage their children to develop the soft skills we need as adults. Throughout lockdown we have all had far fewer opportunities to meet new people. When we meet new people, we are given a chance to slightly reinvent ourselves, to present a different side of ourselves. The ability for a teenager to meet new people, to make new friends or try out new activities often gives them great confidence and helps them to grow. One of the reasons I have always enjoyed the power of a good school trip is because it can be a transformative experience. On every trip at least one child grows in confidence and often their entire academic profile improves. So, what opportunities can we now give our young people so that they get a chance to meet new people, enhance their sense of purpose and, with it, their self-worth?

EYES ON THE HORIZON: Encouraging your child to go off on a university visit or to attend an open day perhaps without a parent present is an important way to show you trust them ahead of taking this next step. This way they are far freer to make friends with someone 72 DECEMBER 2021

on the train journey or able to get chatting on the tour. If your child is contemplating an apprenticeship or career, giving them a chance to undertake work experience can give them a great opportunity to be independent.

WORK PLACE: Many teachers, including myself, have relaxed about the possibility of young people holding weekend jobs. Of course, you don’t want it competing with their studies but they can be helpful in gaining confidence in a non-school environment. It could be that volunteering in a charity shop, for a local youth group or a care home gives them this sense of responsibility, freedom and chance to make new friends.

POSITION OF RESPONSIBILITY: Encouraging your child to try for captain of the basketball team, a prefect role or running the school newspaper might just be the nudge that they need to take them into a different role and group of friends. A pupil at interview only yesterday mentioned how organizing street parties has given her a sense of value and purpose. We can all benefit from informal opportunities to meet new people and to lead, but for our children who are still developing soft skills, learning how to communicate, empathize and get organized will help to nurture independent, confident adults. stmargarets-school.org.uk

WHY MY CHILDREN BOARD AT SCHOOL No-one was more surprised than Helen and Stuart when their 10-year-old son James asked if he could be a boarder at Felsted School. Soon though the couple began to realise that boarding gave James and his two younger brothers a valuable opportunity to develop confidence and independence, Helen explains.

“A

really positive experience of school gives children the confidence to be themselves,’ says Helen, an ambassador for ethical coffee manufacturer Safi, and mum to three boys. She and husband Stuart, a wealth management consultant, had been careful to choose a school that offered the breadth of education they wanted for James and his younger brothers, Ollie and Charlie. The family even moved house so that the children could be day pupils at Felsted, an independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged four to 18, set in 80 acres of idyllic north Essex countryside not far from the M11 and

Stansted Airport. It was after two years at Felsted that their eldest son, James, came home with the news that he wanted to be a boarder. ‘We weren’t expecting it,’ remembers Helen. ‘Some of James’ friends were boarding and kept telling him how much fun it was, so he felt he might be missing out on something.’ James began by boarding just one night a week. ‘He loved it,’ says Helen. ‘He did his homework straightaway, ate supper with his friends and then pitched into a different activity every evening movie nights, barbecues, sports and games, an endless list. The boarding house is so comfortable and cosy, and the houseparents look after the children wonderfully.’ As they have moved up through the years at Felsted, Helen and Stuart’s three sons have all spent part of the week boarding. ‘Boarders get a taste of independence, but in a safe and guided environment,’ says Helen. ‘I’ve seen huge changes in my sons – they’re responsible, sociable, respectful of others and know how to pull together as a team.’ While James, Ollie and Charlie split the week between home and school, many families choose full boarding at Felsted for seven nights a week, or weekly boarding for five nights. ‘Boarding is a great opportunity for young people to learn to get along with others and to develop their own personalities independently,’ says Helen. ‘There couldn’t be any better preparation for adult life in the modern world.” To find out more about boarding at Felsted, visit felsted.org

Why parents choose St Columba’s College

S

t Columba’s College is an independent co-educational Catholic day school for ages 4 to 18 in St Albans, welcoming families of all faiths and none. The school announced its move to co-education last year and the first girls joined Reception back in January. This term St Columba’s has welcomed more than 20 young women into the Lower Sixth for the next stage of their educational journey. They join the new and returning girls in the Lower Prep. From September 2022 girls will also join St Columba’s in Year 7 (11+) as the school continues the move to full co-education from 4-18. Why are parents choosing St Columba’s for their children? Mr Matthew Finn is a former student of St Columba’s College and is delighted to have

76 DECEMBER 2021

enrolled his daughter into the Prep School. Matthew says: “I strongly believe there is no school like St Columba’s, it gives their students opportunities in life that they would not experience anywhere else. “St Columba’s takes ordinary children, and both educates and morally guides them with a personal touch so that they can live as extraordinary adults”. Mr and Mrs Veitch, who already had a son at the school, also chose St Columba’s College for their daughter. They said: “When we discovered that the school was accepting girls this year, we were ecstatic. It’s a place we know that both our children will get the focus and attention they deserve to grow as individuals”. St Columba’s College takes a holistic approach to education, placing happiness and confidence at the centre of the school’s mission. Pupils are supported by a dedicated academic staff, and they benefit from a strong programme of extracurricular and enrichment activities. To support the move to full co-education from 4 to 18, the school has invested in new and improved facilities. It is augmenting the curriculum with new areas of study including Drama & Theatre, Textiles and Dance. Girls’ sports have got off to a flying start with St Columba’s teams enjoying successes at National level in swimming and triathlon. To find out more, visit stcolumbascollege.org.

WELL-BEING:

IS FLEXI-BOARDING THE ANSWER? Jo Cameron, principal of Queenswood School in Hertfordshire, argues that boarding schools are particularly well placed to help teenagers maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Q: How can boarding schools help young people to stay healthy? A: There is a direct correlation between lack of physical activity, poorer mental health and lower aspirations among teenagers, and one recent study suggests that by the age of 14, girls are twice as likely as boys to drop sport altogether. But at boarding school pupils continue to enjoy being active throughout their education, with a hugely positive impact on their self-esteem as well as their academic results. And the range of co-curricular opportunities on offer at boarding schools, which are sadly under threat in many state schools, helps pupils to broaden their horizons and to relieve some of the pressure of exams. Q: Can boarding really help to reduce stress? A: Increasingly, boarding schools are taking a flexible approach to suit the needs of modern working families. Pupils can choose to board for just a few nights a week, allowing them to take part in those vital co-curricular activities well into the evening, and easing the stressful burden of the daily school run for parents.

“Increasingly, boarding schools are taking a flexible approach to suit the needs of modern working families”” Q: Is technology a threat to well-being? A: Young people face unprecedented pressures from social media, and schools have an important part to play in helping children develop a healthy relationship with technology. Here at Queenswood, mobile phones are allowed at certain times of the school day, but we have introduced initiatives for boarders such as ‘No Tech Tuesdays’, and the girls have really embraced the challenge! Q: How do boarders develop social skills? A: Boarding teaches pupils to be self-reliant, independent and responsible, and to mix with people from all over the world. At the same time, the level of pastoral care is exceptionally high. At Queenswood, for example, there are so many adults on hand to help girls negotiate those challenging teenage years – Houseparents, heads of House and heads of year, nurses, a residential school counselor, the school Chaplain. There is always someone to turn to. queenswood.org

NMRK JEWELLERY

NMRK Jewellery is an exciting new British Jewellery brand, based in St Albans. Launched out of lockdown this year, NMRK centres on affordable and responsibly handcrafted pieces. The first collection, The Gold Edit, focuses on elevated staples such as diamond studded hoops and stackable mini huggies. This powerful stylish essential to long outlast seasonal trends. After taking a jewellery course at St Albans School of Jewellery, NMRK Jewellery founder Tami Grewal discovered an unexpected and emerging passion. “On a whim, I enrolled at St Albans School of Jewellery, and fell head over heels with making jewellery. The fundamentals course was intimate and in-depth and and the tutors were incredible. I went in with a a clear idea of the style that felt like me, and I was helped along to learn techniques in order to achieve this. The ultimate goal is to be designing and hand creating my own simple and chic gold jewellery. Until that dream is realised, I have been working with a team to bring together this beautiful collection of gold and diamond earrings.” Unlike other demi fine brands, NMRK has gone against the trend of vermeil and plated pieces. “Compared with solid 9-karat gold and upwards, the quality of the item and durability just isn’t there with vermeil and plated items. The gold eventually wears down and you are left with dull faded base metal jewellery”. NMRK Jewellery specialises in lightweight luxury pieces crafted in 9-karat gold and diamond. The importance of high quality, sustainable and ethically sourced diamond and gold are the heart of their ethos. For the love of jewellery and of bringing luxury to your everyday. Now it’s time to zhuzh up your look with a bit of festive glam. Often, there’s not a lot of time to prep for midweek gatherings, but by focusing on one feature, you can go from plain to party-ready in a matter of minutes. Here, pro make-up artists offer seven quick-fix ideas for a fabulous festive beauty look…

It’s quick and easy to apply, and a fun, bright shade will bring your face to life in a jiffy. Finish off with a hydrating lip balm to minimise any cracking of the lipstick. I always

Jamie Genevieve, make-up artist and founder of Vieve, is all about the “one-and-done smoky eye”, created with a brown eyeshadow stick, instead of a palette. She explains: “Scribble your chosen Vieve Eye Wand shade onto your lid. With a clean brush, start to buff the colour evenly over the lid. Once you’ve done this, scribble a little bit more of that same shade into your crease and dab with your fingertips. For an even PRECISION GEL LINER, more dramatic look, sketch £15.75 (WAS £21), AVAILABLE FROM the Eye Wand along your lash ILLAMASQUA line and use a smaller, more precise brush to shape the shadow into a wing.”

The shimmer smoky-eye “Your eyes deserve to be the focus when it comes to party glam,” says make-up artist Aimee Connolly, founder of Sculpted by Aimee, who suggests a three-step “buff, smoke and shimmer” approach. “Start by buffing a matte transition shade through the crease of the eye to add some depth, then add some smoke with a darker matte shade on the outer corners of the eye and around the lash line. To finish, sweep a dazzling shimmer or metallic shade across the eyelid, and pair with lashings of mascara.”

The bronze eye “A warm bronze shade is a really easy go-to shade for a party look,” says Melanie Barrese, head makeup artist at Eyeko. “Take an eyeshadow brush and ensure you have patted the colour densely onto the eyelid. Then take a fluffy blending brush and, using backwards and forwards motions, blend out – ensuring you push the product outwards and upwards. Petal prints are big bloomin’ news this season, says Katie Wright.

F

loral prints took a dramatic turn on the AW21 catwalks, by way of dark blooms, sumptuous fabrics and beautiful bouquet embellishments. London Fashion Week designers were leading the charge, with chintzy dresses and frock coats fit for a royal seen at Erdem, Yuhan Wang and Preen, while Temperley’s maxi dresses and separates had a retro 70Seventies feel to them. Now, the high street is giving us fabulous petal-powered pieces to rock day or night. Here are three key ways to try the dark florals trend…

Midi dresses An absolute autumn/winter essential, floral midi dresses are a massive trend right now, and they’re so easy to style. SAVING FACE: Secrets from a celebrity facialist Ada Ooi mixes Chinese and Western medicine for a more holistic approach to skincare. By Prudence Wade

W

ith a client roster including Rooney Mara, Ellie Goulding and Lily Allen, facialist Ada Ooi (adaooi.com) knows a thing or two about glowing skin. Originally from Hong Kong, Ooi spent weekends growing up at her grandfather’s pharmacy in nearby Macau. “I would sit next to him every Saturday, I was the girl grinding all these herbs and pastes for the customers,” Ooi remembers. “I picked up a lot about the good feeling of helping people.” Another thing she learned from her grandfather was the potential in mixing Chinese and Western medicines. After an ill-fated foray into advertising, Ooi trained as an aromatherapist and aesthetician – realising she was “trying to find a link to my 92 DECEMBER 2021

grandfather”. When she started treating skin, often it was the last thing Ooi looked at. “Someone would come through my door and I’d be like, ‘Actually, I don’t even want to touch your face, I want to touch your feet because your blood circulation is bad, your liver and kidney is in depletion’,” she explains. The next step in Ooi’s career was to train as a practitioner of Chinese medicine – and that’s when she felt she was “really helping people”, she says. “My philosophy is treating from within: that is how I see myself as a facialist, because our skin is the biggest organ of our body and is really the reflection of what’s happening in our inner self.” This ethos has garnered Ooi plenty of celebrity fans, and these are just some of the tips and secrets she’s picked up along the way…

THE PRODUCTS OOI CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT… An essence

Think about your skin holistically

Ooi prefers to use the word ‘essence’ rather than ‘toner’ – particularly as toners have an increasingly bad reputation for being harsh or drying. For Ooi, an essence should follow your cleanser – it won’t minimise your pores (“pores don’t shrink”, she says), but it can balance your skin’s pH and “give your skin a boost of hydration, in the sense that it’s mild and easy enough for the skin to drink up”, she explains. “It’s more important than a moisturiser, I would say.”

“If you care for your skin, you should be caring for your whole wellbeing as well,” Ooi says simply. “I’m not saying you need to go and do lots of check-ups – nothing complicated, but be more mindful and conscious about your stress, the tension you have, hormonal fluctuations. These contribute to most longer-term skin problems, like adult acne and wrinkles – yes, gravity plays a role, but a tense expression is the killer.”

Don’t blindly follow trends “Don’t follow trends to try look like other people – it really is unsustainable and you can make the wrong decisions,” Ooi says. Over-exfoliating is a big one right now. “I really do see there is an addiction to using acids and exfoliating agents, because of how it feels,” she sighs. “Initially, it feels very smooth, very good – but then you start peeling, or you have redness… And your skin can get very dry.”

SLOW AGEING ESSENTIAL FACIAL ESSENCE, £56

An emulsion SKIN PROUD JELLY BRIGHT ESSENCE, £9.30 (WAS £13.95), BOOTS

Try not to do everything at once Almost all of us are guilty of it: we get some kind of issue with our skin – whether it’s acne or melasma – and we try and fix it by chucking on as many products and treatments as we can. “Try to do one thing at a time – don’t experiment with so much,” Ooi pleads. “Even if you’ve got the money, doing everything at the same time cannot be good for you.”

ORIGINS DR. ANDREW WEIL MEGA-MUSHROOM RELIEF & RESILIENCE FORTIFYING EMULSION, £32, BOOTS

BOBBI BROWN INTENSIVE SKIN SERUM RADIANCE EMULSION, £52

Vitamin C Vitamins are “vital for the skin”, says Ooi. “Vitamin C is a great antioxidant you can use day and night to protect your skin from all the free radicals.” Her top tip is to make sure you don’t opt for too high a concentration.

Mindset is everything “It’s really down to the person to find the right mindset to be receiving the skincare routine they have designed for themselves,” says Ooi. “Slapping everything on will always feel like a chore – it really doesn’t do much, apart from conditioning the surface of your skin. “But if you take a little bit of mindfulness in your skincare routine, you will feel a big difference in your mood. And if you do it at night, you will sleep better as well.”

Massage your products in Ooi is a big fan of taking the time to massage in your products. “It really creates a brain-skin reaction with dopamine – happy hormones. They are going to be hyped up, so you’ll have more benefits from your skincare, and your mind will feel a lot better too.” 94 DECEMBER 2021

“Emulsions are the texture between serum and moisturiser,” Ooi says. “It’s actually got the best of both worlds… I think an emulsion is a great light moisturiser to always have on your dressing table, so you can adjust how much moisture you want to have every night.” This means your skincare routine can be more “flexible”.

Amanda Holden

L

On her 5am beauty routine, copying Princess Diana’s hair and chatting to Kylie Minogue on the Neighbours set. By Katie Wright,

ooking back on her acting career, there’s one role Amanda Holden is raring to reprise more than any other. “I always think, ‘Oh, let’s bring back Cutting It!’” – the BBC drama set in a Manchester hair salon that ran for four seasons from 2002 to 2004 – “I still regularly see Angela [Griffin], we’re all still good friends. I think it would be really fun to bring that back.” To play hairdresser Mia Bevan, the Hampshireborn actor spent time under the tutelage of legendary stylist Lino Carbosiero at Daniel Galvin: “I actually learned how to be a hairdresser. I swept the hair, did the blow dries. I learnt all kinds of tricks and tips.” Now, nearly two decades later, Holden has landed a hew hair-related role as celebrity ambassador for Charles Worthington. After an afternoon tea event to launch the partnership – Holden resplendent in a white suit, her honeyblonde locks perfectly coiffed – we’ve retired to a quiet corner of the swanky hotel to chat. The Britain’s Got Talent judge admits her tresses have been through some tough times, including the phase in the 80s when a certain royal was all the rage: “Me and my sister, both of us wanted Princess Diana hair. I had a sailor dress because [Diana] wore a sailor dress, I had flat pumps. I made a scrapbook. I was a huge fan.” Jennifer Aniston was – and remains – another source of ‘hairspiration’ (“Yes, I did The Rachel! Of course!”) but the 50-year-old says she won’t be following the recent trend set by celebs such as Sarah Jessica Parker and letting her greys peak through. “I will always be blonde. Each to their own – I have some friends that are embracing age, some people that aren’t. My mum stopped dyeing her own hair around 60 and she’s got really gorgeous, soft-coloured grey hair. I’ll always go ‘Oh god, Mummy, can you just put a bit of colour back in?’ But for me, it’s not something I’m going to do.” Nor is she going to be retiring from the spotlight anytime soon. Holden, who co-hosts the Heart Breakfast radio show with Jamie Theakston on weekday mornings, cites Jennifer Lopez as an example of a woman in the entertainment world

going “through the roof ” in terms of “what you can achieve at what age”. Blonde ambition aside, the mum-of-two (she shares daughters Lexie, 15, and Hollie, nine, with record producer husband Chris Hughes) “relished” the chance to spend more time with her family at home in London during the first UK lockdown last year. “I really loved having everyone under one roof. I loved it. I loved being silly on TikTok, I loved that I socialised with my best friends on Zoom. I loved that I didn’t need to call an Uber, I just staggered up the stairs. There was so many positives for me.” The third lockdown was a different story, however: “The third one did my head in, just in the way that I just lost faith in the government and the rules generally and human nature. I think we started lockdown by being told to look out for each other, and we ended lockdown by being told to spy on each other.” Now, as the pandemic rumbles on, Holden worries that Brits might not be as resilient as they were in the past. “We’ve got to learn as a nation. You know, we’ve won wars, we’ve got through everything with our sense of humor and our stoicism and our ability to stand up for ourselves, and I just hope that we haven’t lost any of that. I don’t want Great Britain to go soft, otherwise I’m leaving – like Kylie!” Recently, the pop star told the BBC she would be moving back to her native Australia, a claim which Holden cheerfully refutes.

3 “I don’t think she’s going. No! Rubbish!” she says, laughing. “She’s not going anywhere. She has a house here and Australia, she’s always done that.” The pair share make-up artist Christian Vermaak, and now they’re both Neighbours alumna, with Holden shooting scenes for the Aussie soap in London earlier this month that will air next year. “Oh my god, she rang on set as well!” Holden recalls. “Kylie rang Christian. She was like, ‘Let me speak to Amanda’. And I was like, ‘Excuse me, I’m just talking to Charlene, everyone!’ It was such a thrill. So fun and so camp.” After making her Ramsay Street dream come true and releasing her debut studio album, Songs from My Heart, last year, the multi-talented star has now set her sights on the literary world and hopes to publish a novel. Is there anything else left on her showbiz bucket list? “I would love to play like a baddie in a Bollywood movie. That’s one thing I’ve always wanted to do, right from my 20s. Surely I could be some wicked mother or some kind of baddie who turns up an upsets the apple cart?” For now, the jetsetter is off to Dubai for a wellearned break, where she’ll indulge in her favourite treats again after being “vegan for most of this year. I thought, ‘I’m gonna just try being vegan for a bit’, because I just wanted to and I’ve really enjoyed it, and how it’s made me feel. “But I’m off on holiday tomorrow, so I will be back on the rosé and the cheese. I just think don’t make rules for yourself. Just do everything in moderation.”

Lessons In Luminosity: Lighting Trend Report with Gubi, they’ve brought forth the Howard Chandelier — a spellbinding light that is as minimal as it is grand. For anyone with a penchant for industrial design, it’s a real find. The kind of style that promises to work hard for your affection, developing a beautiful patina over time.

FULL CIRCLE

T

here isn’t much on this Blue Planet that thrives in the dark. It’s why ever since we were able, we have lit fires. First physical, then electric, designed to enliven the night and nourish the soul. And yet, not all lighting is born equal. Spurred on by the ubiquity of screens, we’ve seen sleep patterns short-circuit and our view of the stars fade. The challenge for lighting brands, then, is simple. To reconnect us with a kinder light. One that respects our rhythms and treads softly on the Earth. It’s in search of such a glow that we’ve put together a dossier of the very best lighting styles for 2022. The kind that shine for you, not on you. And make coming home the most sumptuous moment of all.

THE NEW LUXE Of all of design’s little luxuries, the chandelier is perhaps the most flamboyant. A glamorous spectacle of light designed to see and be seen. And yet in 2021, designers are rethinking its iconic form. Peeling back the layers of ostentation to arrive at something more truthful. One case in point comes from Danish design studio, Space Copenhagen. In collaboration 106 DECEMBER 2021

Pomposity isn’t the only virtue under the microscope this season. Today’s designers have also been reevaluating their methods of making. The quarter began with an announcement that Italian lighting brand, Flos, are now officially carbon neutral. The achievement is largely due to investments in renewable energy for their factories, but can also be attributed to the decision to make sure that any new releases can be fully recycled after their lifetime. Sustainable sensibilities can also be found at smaller ateliers like Brokis. Novelties like the Geometric Table Lamp gain their ethereal appearance from BrokisGlass — an upcycled material that reutilises shards of glass from the factory floor. Taken together, they represent a commitment to closing the circle of production, once again cementing design’s role as a protagonist in the fight for a sustainable future.

MATHEMATICALLY PERFECT If politics can sometimes feel perplexing, then you wouldn’t have wanted to spend much time with Raimond Puts. As an outspoken professor-cumdesigner, he spent most of his time thinking about prime numbers — the mystery of such digits and their many aesthetic possibilities. It’s an obsession that’s led this year to the new and expanded Raimond Collection — a series of glowing geodesic domes that bring the wonder of a starry night home. When we dug a little deeper, we were surprised to find that Puts wasn’t alone in his metaphysical musings. Meticulous precision can also be found in Louis Poulsen’s Pâtéra pendant: a luminous style with diamond-shaped cells that delivers a rich, atmospheric glow.

NOMADIC BY NATURE Untethered from unsightly cables and wires, these nomadic little creations ask you to get outside and explore. Some of them, like the Pantop Table Lamp, you will undoubtedly recognise — an iconic Verner Panton style set loose. Others like the Sfera collection are entirely new. Its brutalist base houses both a charging module and touch sensitive dimmer, meaning you’ll never be left in the dark this season.

a cool anchor. A heart of stone for the soft halo of light that follows. They also inject a necessary dose of glamour into everyday lighting — an art form long dominated by the use of glass or steel.

LIGHT YOU CAN SHAPE One of the most generous gifts a designer can bestow isn’t to do with its style or finish — although all these details are important. Rather, it’s to let us into the act of creation, deciding exactly when, where and how much light is needed. This season, we were delighted to stumble across a selection of luminaires that did just that. In the new Plié Plissé Lamp, it’s pleated shade can be folded inwards or out. A simple gesture that allows it to provide both ambient and directional light. Aqua Creations, meanwhile, takes customisation a little further, with a stackable series of silk lanterns that can be personalised down to the very last detail. Known as the Code 130 collection, they promise to give you one more reason to look up and smile.

You can also come and see us in person in our 25,000 sq. ft luxury living showroom in Hatch End where a universe of contemporary design awaits. Simply head to our website and book in at your earliest convenience. Chaplins Furniture 477-507 Uxbridge Road, HA5 4JS

BOOKS FOR GARDENERS

Thirteen Ways To Smell A Tree by David George Haskell (Gaia, £12.99) Ever considered how a tree smells? Or how a tree might evoke memories of childhood, or a particular time in a particular place? This dip-in, dip-out offering would be perfect to peruse in a quiet moment over the festive season. Written by biologist, award-winning author and academic, David George Haskell, it contains 13 beautifully written essays that explore the evocative scents of trees, from the conker tree that takes us back to childhood, to the pine tree hanging from the rear-view mirror.

Rebugging The Planet by Vicki Hird (Chelsea Green, £12.99) Even if your gardening loved one has a phobia about insects, this fascinating little tome may convert them into turning over a new leaf about creepy crawlies, given their importance to the planet. After all, a world without bugs would mean no flowers, no trees, no crops and no food. More than 40% of insect species are at risk of extinction while a third more are endangered, warns environmental campaigner Vicki Hird, who says it’s up to us to rebug our attitudes. She looks at the solutions for rebugging, offering tips, advice and activities including rewilding, making bug-friendly choices with food and clothes and learning how to rebug a variety of spaces.

The Green Indoors by Maddie and Alice Bailey (Hardie Grant, £16.99) So, we all know the popularity of houseplants soared during lockdown, and this book will offer inspiration to those who may not have had much luck with indoor plants in the past. The authors will not only find you the perfect houseplant, but will show you where to put it and how to relocate plants to improve their growth and help them thrive. The book is broken down by environment – Extreme Sun and Heat, Dry Air and Central Heating, Deep Shade, High Humidity and Draughty – each chapter offering tips on reconfiguring your living space and improving your plants’ longevity, growth and vibrancy.

Grow Organic Salad Leaves And Greens by Charles Dowding (Green Books, £14.99) Charles Dowding has long been encouraging gardeners to grow their own in the easiest way possible, using ‘no-dig gardening’ so you won’t break your back doing it. No matter how large the plot or small the windowsill, budding growers can learn how to master the secrets of the seasons so they can have a tasty crop whatever the weather. As well as traditional favourites, the book features less wellknown salad leaves along with recipes to get the most flavour out of them. It’s an ideal gift for anyone who wants to lower their carbon footprint and cut the cost of their shopping bills. DECEMBER 2021 113

DECOUPAGE PAPERS T his spring, fine artist and colour expert Annie Sloan launches a collection of decoupage papers in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Inspired by the vast archive of botanical drawings from the RHS’s world-famous Lindley Collections, the range includes twelve designs showcasing flora and fauna in styles from Elizabethan Knot garden plans to hand-coloured engravings. Each pack includes two large sheets of decoupage paper, incorporating colours from Annie’s Wall Paint and Chalk Paint™ palettes, alongside a practical guide. Beloved by the Victorians, decoupage is the art of decorating objects and furniture with paper cut outs until the entire surface is covered. Pictures from books and cards or patterned embossed paper were cut out and sealed with 30 to 40 layers of varnish till the “stuck on” look disappeared.

118 DECEMBER 2021

Where the traditional method was extremely laborious, with Annie’s decoupage papers it’s all done for you – flowers and wildlife in harmonious colours are ready to be cut out, arranged and stuck down with just two coats of Image Medium, Annie’s special adhesive. If the completelycovered Victorian style isn’t for you, papers can be coordinated with the base colour of the wall or furniture to create a softer, pared-back look with cut outs positioned delicately over a larger area. “There’s been a big resurgence in the decorative, Bloomsbury-style aesthetic recently and decoupage fits in to that perfectly. It’s a delightful decoration technique with so much history,” says Annie. “My aim with this collection was to create a fool-proof way for everyone – beginner or expert – to bring creativity, craft and character into their homes, and transform their interiors into works of art.” anniesloan.com

TYE ARCHITECTS : Case study

S

ettled in the open countryside in Buckinghamshire this house is nestled in a secluded rural location, reflecting its surroundings of mature woodland. The setting and elegant simplicity were paramount to the design of this house. The brief was to provide a dwelling which responds to its context in materiality. A simple palette of carefully selected materials includes the use of stone from the earth on the lower level and timber on the floating box of the upper level, enhanced by a green tinted series of panels to provide transparency and reflect the surrounding plot-scape. With clean geometric lines, the floating first floor cantilevers and balances on the ground floor, providing long reaching views from the master bedroom and several short distance views of the plot from the other bedrooms. This architectural element pulls you into the site and allows you to marvel at its geometry and weightlessness. The lower floor is grounded by the strong stone element; the roofing detail of the first floor floats, gliding with the frameless glazing. Approaching the house, the glass enhances the large open spaces. The open plan ground floor connects from the front entrance area through to the rear garden and a horizontal expanse of glazing connects the rear living spaces to the garden-scape to the rear. Vertical electronically controlled louvres to the windows provide solar shading and privacy shading

to the bedrooms. Wooden sliding door panels, some recessed and hidden in the walls allow for areas to be discretely closed off. The house is fully equipped with a home cinema room and an outdoor amphitheatre. A sunroom in the garden provides an area for outdoor living where you can sit outside in a sheltered area at different times of the day and enjoy the views of the house and the landscaped garden. This project is energy efficient and environmentally friendly with ground source heat pumps providing the heating and hot water. To further reduce the carbon footprint, the house is also equipped with solar panels and low energy lighting. This dwelling was designed to create an elegant, contemporary family home with an open plan layout that is an environmentally sustainable, contextually relevant and timeless concept. tyearchitects.com

Introducing Berkeley Cathedral Oak Woodpecker Flooring’s latest premium board might be a new addition, but it exudes centuries old charm.

T

he wood floor experts have launched Berkeley Cathedral Oak, a beautifully worn board with gentle undulations and the feeling that generations of footfall has trodden upon it. Bursting with character, it will add intrigue and warmth, thanks to its waves of honey, caramel and cocoa hues. The richly-textured boards are expertly finished by hand, meaning every natural feature and shade is highlighted to its full potential. Darwyn Ker, Managing Director of Woodpecker Flooring, said: “A rustic board with a subtle oiled finish, allowing the knots and natural features to shine through, Berkeley Cathedral Oak will bring warmth and character to every home. “The Berkeley range is made up of extraordinary woods that have been painstakingly hand-worked for a finish that brings a whole new dimension to flooring.” Berkeley Cathedral Oak is part of Woodpecker’s Signature Flooring Range and is guaranteed for 100 years. About Woodpecker Flooring Woodpecker is a family-run business with a heritage in the timber industry that goes back three generations. Founded nearly 50 years ago by Bruce Ker, a skilled craftsman who loved teaching people how to work with wood, the Woodpecker tradition is continued today by his son Nelson and grandson 130 DECEMBER 2021

Darwyn. Since the very beginning, Woodpecker have been passionate about designing and sourcing the finest wooden floors. Their dedication starts in the forest. Woodpecker only use responsibly sourced wood with full FSC® or PEFC certifications, selecting the trees before they are felled and paying close attention to how they are sawn, stacked and dried. The dry wood is then kilned twice for maximum stability before being machined. Centuries-old hand-finishing techniques - such as lacquering, oiling and antiquing the wood - further enhance its natural beauty. It’s fair to say, nobody knows or cares more about wood than Woodpecker. woodpeckerflooring.co.uk
