“The lighting will complement the stunning grounds of Wrest Park”

ABOUT WREST PARK Wrest Park is an exceptional rarity – a magnificent house of the 1830s, set in an outstanding restored garden landscape originating in the 17th century. The house itself is remarkable, a near unique example of 19th-century English architecture following the style of an 18th-century French chateau. Its extensive grounds are a glorious amalgam of three centuries of English garden design and contain one of the few remaining formal gardens of the early 18th century. garden, the Chinese Pavilion, and the Orangery. Illumaphonium’s interactive installation ‘Continuum’, with a trail of 25 mirrored monoliths, will take visitors through a maze of incredible reflection and light, capturing the imaginations of all ages. Katherine Jewkes said: “We’re looking forward to bringing a brand new light trail to Wrest Park in 2023, reimagining the unique grounds and gardens of what is a beautiful site that we can’t wait to welcome visitors to.” Stuart Galbraith, CEO of Kilimanjaro Live said: “Wrest Park is truly a one of kind place; to be able to bring our Christmas at… light trail to these historic gardens is a real honour.” Tom Woodhouse Site Manager at Wrest Park said: “We’re so excited that Wrest Park will be hosting a Christmas light trail for the first time in the site’s history. In partnership with Kilimanjaro Live, Christmas At Wrest Park will be a spectacular festive feast for the senses, and the perfect way to get the family into the yuletide spirit. We can’t wait to see Wrest Park’s historic grounds transformed into a magical winter wonderland through music and light installations.”

BALLITO BOMBSHELLS: A Tale of Silk and Steel

New Exhibition at St Albans Museum + Gallery

A

fascinating tale of silk and steel, Ballito Bombshells exhibition opens 20 October at St Albans Museum + Gallery, Hertfordshire, and tells the story of Fleetville’s Ballington Hosiery Mill that manufactured everything from delicate stockings to robust artillery shells between the 1920s and the 1960s. The free exhibition will run in the Keeper’s Galleries until 04 February. Inspiring and remarkable, Ballito Bombshells recounts the stories of its employees – from their rigorous work to popular social events at the mill – and charts the history of the factory itself. Visitors will be able to enjoy a selection of the striking designs that made Ballito so memorable, a rundown of the machinery used in production, and an insight into the company’s role in the Second World War. The name Ballito is believed to have originated from the company’s first hosiery mill in Ballington,

Tennessee. In the early 20th century, NewYork brothers Alexander and Charles Kotzin took advantage of the growing demand for silk stockings after the First World War and began importing the popular products to the UK. When new import duties threatened the profits of the new businesses, the duo acquired an old factory in Fleetville, Hertfordshire, and technicians were brought over from Tennessee to install machines and train new employees. The Ballington Hosiery Mill opened in August 1925 and, within four years, was manufacturing more than 14,000 pairs of stockings each month. Farhana Begum, Arts, Tourism, Heritage and Culture Manager at St Albans City and District Council and Head of St Albans Museums, says: “Ballito Bombshells is a compelling exhibition that gives us an insight into life at the Ballington Hosiery Mill like never before. It is an exciting opportunity to understand more about the industrial history of St Albans and its role in the war, as well as the varied lives of its employees. “We are thrilled to showcase Ballito’s intriguing story in our Keeper’s Galleries at St Albans

Museum + Gallery, which offers visitors a fitting stage on which to enjoy this historical and delightful tale.” The social life at Ballito was an integral part of the employee experience. In the early 1930s, the company created a social hall and canteen that became so popular that the facilities were expanded a few years later to accommodate space for more clubs and activities (and underground shelters as war loomed on the horizon). Some of the most popular social sessions were boxing and Saturday-night dancing, including the ‘Ballito Tango’- a dance specially created by M. Pierre of the famous Regent Street School of Dancing. Employees spoke so highly of the activities that locals began to join in. By the 1950s, Ballito had even acquired its own sports fields in St Albans. The Fleetville factory was commandeered in 1939 as part of the war effort. Hosiery machines were pushed aside to make room for larger machines that would facilitate the creation of shell casings. Two-shift – day and night – working days were introduced to ensure a constant level of production. The premises would also go on to manufacture parts for de Havilland Mosquito and Tempest fighter planes as well as radar equipment. A small group of employees maintained some stocking production for the home markets. Sarah Keeling, curator (post-medieval to contemporary) at St Albans Museum + Gallery, says: “A history so close to home, it is an honour to be sharing the story of the Ballito and their crucial and varied roles within the company and community. It’s a story of hard work, determination and glamour which Fleetville and St Albans should be proud of. I encourage everyone to discover more at the exhibition starting at the end of October.”

“The social life at Ballito was an integral part of the employee experience” Import pressures and shareholder control got the best of Ballito in 1967 when Courtauld bid successfully for the company. Unfortunately, Courtauld was only keen to buy the Ballito name and reputation, the reality of its veiled promise to maintain the manufacture of hosiery in the area. The Ballito management had to announce the high level of redundancies to its employees. Ironically, Marconi Instruments – the business responsible for the assembly of radar equipment at the Fleetville factory during the war – went on to lease space in the factory to expand its production line. Lynn Cunningham, Lead Councillor for Museums, says: “This is a fascinating project that celebrates the story of a hugely successful and historical brand and shines the spotlight on those behind it. Once again, the team at St Albans Museums + Gallery has curated an incredibly insightful and interesting exhibition that the community of St Albans and beyond will thoroughly enjoy.”

THE DETAILS Ballito Bombshells officially opens on 20 October at St Albans Museum + Gallery and will run until the 04 February 2024. Unique gifts inspired by the collection including postcards featuring the enigmatic Ballito designs will be available to purchase from the shop. St Albans Museum + Gallery is open daily 11am – 5pm. Free Entry. Visit stalbansmuseums.org. uk@stalbansmuseums

THE CONNAUGHT GRILL The legendary restaurant celebrates the winter season at The Connaught, Mayfair

ABOUT THE CONNAUGHT In the heart of London’s Mayfair, The Connaught, part of Maybourne Hotel Group, blends contemporary style, classic English character and impeccable service to create the ultimate in sophistication. Rooms and suites to suit every mood, exquisite cuisine from Hélène Darroze and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, the charm of The Connaught and Coburg Bars, and Europe’s first Aman Spa make this the perfect place to rest, relax and dine in style. the-connaught.co.uk

42 DECEMBER 2023

T

he Connaught Grill is one of London’s most celebrated restaurants and home to the original power players of the capital. The restaurant has a respectful nod to its distinguished heritage, but with a contemporary interpretation in both the design and cuisine. Located on the ground floor of the hotel, the corridor walls display one-of-a-kind vintages of wines and champagnes from Burgundy’s Domaine de la Romanée Conti to Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises, and works of art by design masters Louise Bourgeois, Idris Khan and Le Corbusier. The 46-seat restaurant is a showcase of contemporary creativity and craftsmanship. The open kitchen allows guests to see chefs cook on a theatrical wood-burning grill and rotisserie. Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten pays homage to classic grill dining, but with his own signature twists of modernity, and using ingredients with the finest provenance. For the best of British comfort, a Sunday Roast is presented and carved on the restored silver trolley from the original Grill, wild seabass en croute is a ceremonious pastry-enrobed showstopper, carved tableside in true old-school Connaught style. Ensuring balance, light and vegetarian, dishes include shaved brussels sprouts salad topped with

an organic fried egg, raw diver scallop served in the shell and wild mushroom salad with a herbal pine nut dressing. Sashimi, oysters and langoustines are served spectacularly on vast bowls of ice. Traditional British favourites also appear on the dessert menu, overseen by Executive Pastry Chef Jerome Beraudo, including sticky toffee pudding served with butterscotch sauce and clotted cream sorbet, chocolate soufflé topped with ice cream and Crêpes Suzette. Christmas at Hatfield Park

O

ur brand new Christmas experience at Hatfield Park this year is a journey through nine meticulously crafted installations, designed to bring our unique Tudor heritage to life, and is suitable for guests of all ages. As you arrive at our beautifully decorated Stable Yard you will receive your exclusive invitation, along with a guide to the experience, as Queen Elizabeth I herself would have sent you. Make your way through Palace Green where you will find our Secret Garden Door, the unassuming entrance to the experience. You are about to enter a Fantastical Christmas Revel hosted by Elizabeth herself for her subjects, great and good, rich and poor, at her childhood home where she first learned she had become Queen. The Royal Frieze, to your right, depicts the Queen and her courtiers, our inspiration for Fantastical Revels. To your right you will see a grouping of seasonal greenery sculptures, depicting the courtiers in the frieze, greeted by the Queen herself. Beyond the courtiers you will see a magnificent coach, from which guests have alighted, whilst Elizabeth will appear in different guises in each installation. As you wander through the Lime Walk, you will see the Mighty Stag and Boar installations, animals of the parkland who played such vital and symbolic roles throughout the Tudor festivities. Step inside the House into the kitchen where a feast is being prepared. Whilst Victorian, the

kitchen serves beautifully as the backdrop to the preparations of a Tudor Christmas feast. Recurring motifs of greenery, fruit and herbs adorn the spiral staircase, balcony railing and throughout the kitchen, complimented by a giant kissing bough. As you step back out onto the North Front of the House you will see that a troupe of travelling players are here to entertain guests through mummer performances and music - we see that their cart, in contrast to the grand guest coach, is very humble. Dancing and music was the favourite Tudor form of entertainment. The next stunning installation depicts our Tudor guests performing the Volta around the Renaissance Fountain. Make the most of a festive photo opportunity at the Wassailing Feast, an installation designed as a fusion of two traditions, the Twelfth Night feast and the blessing of the fruit trees for good harvest. Many of the populace were forbidden to play games except at Christmas, so they looked forward to the opportunity to play cards, dice, football, chess, nine pin and backgammon, depicted in this impressive masterpiece. Our grand finale is an immense twelve foot statue of Queen Elizabeth, based on our famous Rainbow portrait, another perfect photo opportunity. hatfield-house.co.uk

WESTMINSTER SECURITY Professionals In Protection…Always On Guard.

ith Christmas just around the corner, the festivities are in full swing. The decorations will soon be up and present shopping complete, but do not neglect your personal and property security during this busy period. Organised and opportunist thieves take full advantage of the festive shopping frenzy, with you and your house being top of their list! Christmas sees a peak in home and business burglaries with the long winter nights, particularly in more affluent areas. With the ever-increasing crime rates and vast increase in targeted, often violent high-value burglaries and street robberies, homeowners must take proactive steps to enhance their personal and property security. One of the most effective ways to improve home security is to make your property less appealing to criminals by investing in technical and physical security, such as CCTV, alarms, and lighting. Also, fences, gates, windows, and doors. A 24/7 security guard presence or residential security team is advised should your profile, status, threat, and risk require such measures. This is an essential requirement for high-profile business leaders, celebrities, political, and royal stock. Should the threat and risk of burglary and robbery be enhanced due to your career or company, it’s reassuring to know that private security is a tax64 DECEMBER 2023

deductible business expense. In addition to these often-expensive solutions, there are several simple steps that everyone can take to enhance their security. These include making sure you lock doors, gates, and windows. Keep presents and your car keys out of site, and don’t leave ladders or garden equipment out that could be used to gain entry to your home. It is also important to be aware of the latest trends, such as the use of social media by criminals to identify potential targets and take steps to protect against these threats. Ultimately, the key to effective home security is a combination of technological solutions, physical measures, and manned guarding. By taking proactive steps to protect your home and assets, you can help ensure the safety and security of your family and possessions, gaining peace of mind which comes with good security awareness and measures. rom Dubai to Sweden and London to New York, Rana Begum’s work has been viewed by millions across the globe. She now returns to her former home of St Albans in Hertfordshire to present brand new works at her solo exhibition, Ordered Form. Curated by UH Arts + Culture and played out in the underground Weston Gallery of St Albans Museum + Gallery, the exhibition focuses on Begum’s geometric work to create a remarkable spatial and visual experience. Presenting sculptures, paintings and screenprints, newly created relief works and a panel painting installation, the exhibition poignantly brings the acclaimed artist’s work to her former home city and celebrates the success of an alumna of the University. Now living and working in London, Rana Begum grew up in St Albans and went to school at St Albans Girls School. As a young artist she studied her foundation course at University of Hertfordshire, which she has said had a pivotal impact on her in ‘opening up’ ideas and disciplines. Rana Begum, says: “Solo exhibitions are always exciting but this one has significant meaning as, after many years of long-haul destinations, my family and friends from my home city where I grew up, can now come and see my work.” From January, Begum will take over the stunning Assembly Room with an awe-inspiring, vast sitespecific installation No. 670 Mesh. SHARES IN BANKSY’S VALENTINE’S DAY MASCARA MURAL OFFERED TO PUBLIC

By Anahita Hossein-Pour

T

he public can now buy a piece of a Banksy mural first discovered on the side of a house in Margate in shares of £120 each. Banksy’s Valentine’s Day Mascara, which appeared on February 14, depicts a 1950s housewife with a swollen eye and missing tooth, wearing an apron and yellow washing-up gloves, and throwing a man into a freezer. From August 22, art enthusiasts have been able to buy a share of the street art, which has been valued at £6 million total. A total of 27,000 shares have been made available via marketplace Showpiece. The artwork was moved to the seaside town’s amusement park Dreamland for public display following its discovery – it is hoped this will remain its official home. A Dreamland spokesperson said they were “delighted” to be able to continue to give the artwork a home where members of the public could

see it for free when the theme park was open. The original owner of the mural has been represented by Red Eight Gallery. The gallery’s chief executive Julian Usher said: “I’m so pleased that the Banksy work can be hosted at Dreamland, so that it remains in the town for everyone to come and see. “The fact that it will be accessible for people to actually own a share in is wonderful, and it also means the mural can now make Margate its official home.” Showpiece bosses are also raising funds for the national domestic abuse charity Refuge. Managing director of Showpiece Aaron Carter said: “Like many of Banksy’s works, Valentine’s Day Mascara highlights a serious subject matter. “We hope that by working with our charity partners, we can continue to promote the work they accomplish and support the causes Banksy is concerned with.” showpiece.com/valentines-day-mascara

Do I need a lasting power of attorney? Graham Hearnden, of Trust Matters Group in St Albans, warns about the dangers of not having lasting powers of attorney in place

A

s people are living longer, so too will there be an increase in the number of people expected to need to give a third party power over their affairs. Lasting powers of attorney (LPA) are legal documents that let you appoint one or more people —known as ‘attorneys’ — to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf in the case of loss of mental or physical capacity. This must be set up before

that occurs, as once you’ve lost capacity it’s too late and only a deputyship is possible. It can take months to apply for deputyship once someone is unable to look after their own affairs, and the fees to apply can be costly. These can include solicitor fees to apply for deputyship, an assessment from a GP and fees to apply to the Court of Protection (£371). If the court decides your case needs a hearing, a further £494 is payable. In

some cases, you must also pay to set up a bond to insure against misuse of funds, which must be paid for annually. There’s also an annual ‘supervision fee’ to the Office of the Public Guardian (£320 per annum and, in the first year, an extra £100 assessment fee). The person authorised by the Court of Protection to handle your affairs on your behalf is not only unlikely to be who you would have chosen, but may even be a court official — who can charge every time they act for you. By contrast, once an LPA has been granted, it doesn’t need to be renewed. The LPA rules, introduced in 2007, have enhanced the protection offered and ensure people are of sound mind when they set it up. Those with dementia are particularly vulnerable to the theft or illegal use of their property, money or other valuables. Those without an LPA are powerless to

“There are two types of lasting power of attorney: property and financial affairs; and health and welfare”

intervene. The delay involved in obtaining deputyship could also cause serious harm as finances are left inaccessible for several months. It’s also not a solution for those needing help in managing their affairs to give PINs as this could jeopardise the parents’ ability to recover losses if the account is hacked with no LPA in place. There are two types of lasting power of attorney: property and financial affairs; and health and welfare. It’s important to note that existing enduring powers of attorney are still valid, but they only cover property and financial affairs. Trust Matters is able to deal with all the legal requirements surrounding the drafting of an LPA, including preparing your documents, liaising with the Office of the Public Guardian and registering your documents.

Benefits of the independent school

ith options ranging from boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a school to suit each and every child. Here are some of the reasons why parents are choosing to give their children the unique experience of private school and why it’s worth the financial investment.

ENRICHED ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES One of the accepted benefits of private schools is that they provide exceptional and challenging educational experiences through extracurricular activities, Advanced Placement courses, and the International Baccalaureate programme, just to name a few. The IB programme focuses on school work and on developing you as a whole person. Private school students constantly score top marks on standardized tests and college entrance exams, and many schools have a 100 per cent rate of students attending their university of choice.

CONTROLLED CLASS SIZES A comprehensive study on class size made by educational researchers Bruce Biddler and David Berliner in 2002 showed that the smaller the class size, the better the average student performs on academic achievement tests. The gains from smaller class sizes are stronger the longer a child is exposed to them. Private schools vary greatly in size, but 72 DECEMBER 2023

depending on their teaching style, almost all focus on the importance of small class sizes to individually help students’ weak areas and advance their strengths.

DEDICATED TEACHERS In a study completed by the Fraser Institute in 2007, 91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school. Instructors are both qualified and passionate about their subjects, often holding advanced degrees in their field. Within the tight-knit school community, students have close relationships with their teachers who commonly act as role models. In addition, small class sizes make staff members more readily available for extra help or to further challenge individual students.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Private schools are built around open communication between parents and administration, and they make it a priority to involve parents in the community. From frequent parent-teacher meetings, social events such as parent breakfasts and family camping weekends, and the participation of parent committees in fundraising initiatives, families become an integral part of the child’s education. This common ground also helps strengthen parent-child relationships.

A SAFE ENVIRONMENT Private schools have reputations for maintaining high standards for discipline and respect. Lower

DEVELOPMENT FOR TODAY’S AND TOMORROW’S WORLD

staff-to-student ratios allow for more effective observation and control of school grounds. The strong sense of community found in private schools also discourages dangerous behaviour. In the Fraser Institute study, around 72 per cent of parents surveyed with children in the private school system strongly agreed that their school was safe, which greatly improves the quality of the child’s educational experience and achievement. The discipline they learn also improves their rates for success in postsecondary education when they are in control of their class attendance and achievement.

AMPLE RESOURCES At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond. Quality resources provide students with the opportunity to fully explore their interests and talents.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES While academics remain the priority for most private schools, many also place a strong focus on a wellrounded education and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, arts or clubs. This involvement helps stimulate students in their studies, as noted in a study at Stanford University that found that students involved in the arts are more motivated to learn and are three times more likely to win a school attendance award. Extracurricular activities can provide a muchneeded break from the stresses of academics while developing skills and engaging in valuable social situations. 74 DECEMBER 2023

Private schools go beyond offering the mandatory subjects required by provincial curriculum; they can offer students a wide range of specializations including arts programs, athletics, maths and science. Private schools are responsible for producing many leaders in politics, business and society, with a history of adapting quickly to changes in technology and culture. And today, they are also sought by parents of children with special needs such as behaviour problems or learning disabilities.

GABRIELLE CHANEL: Fashion Manifesto

Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was the first superstar fashion designer, says curator of V&A exhibition. By Katie Wright

s well as introducing groundbreaking garments for women, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel embodied her brand in a way no other designer had done before, a new exhibition highlights. Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto – at London’s V&A Museum – traces the life and work of the famed French designer, who was born in the Loire Valley in 1883 and taught to sew by nuns in the orphanage to which she was sent aged 11, when her mother died. “Before her, designers weren’t really known,” says Oriole Cullen, curator of modern textiles and fashion and the V&A. “Their names were known, but they weren’t visible figures within society.” Starting out as a seamstress and cabaret singer, before establishing herself as milliner, Chanel later turned her focus to couture fashion and began designing casual clothing for women, inspired by the menswear of the era. “The Chanel brand as it stands [today] is really based on these ideas that she ushered in 100 years ago,” Cullen says, which is where the exhibition 80 DECEMBER 2023

title comes from. “The meaning of that is really about a template that Gabrielle Chanel set out at the very beginning of her design career and came back to, reimagined and reinvented throughout her long career of sixty years.” Bringing together nearly 200 outfits, the show features items from the opening of her first millinery boutique in Paris in 1910, to the showing of her final collection, two weeks after she died in 1971. Signature designs on display include little black dresses, tweed suits and quilted leather handbags – the most iconic of which is the 2.55 bag. “The 2.55 has never really gone out of fashion since she designed it in 1955,” Cullen says. “That is fascinating in terms of high fashion, that an object can stay the course for such a long time and still be relevant.” Part of the upper echelons of French society, Chanel initially relied on wealthy lovers, such as French ex-cavalry officer Etienne Balsan and English polo player Arthur Edward ‘Boy’ Capel to

Wild for Christmas at

WHIPSNADE ZOO

FREE CHRISTMAS EVENTS AT WHIPSNADE ZOO:

A

troop of Endangered chimpanzees at the UK’s largest zoo have gone wild for early Christmas presents from zookeepers – marking the start of Christmas at Whipsnade Zoo. The chimpanzees delved into the festive enrichment boxes to find their hidden snacks -encouraging the primates to use their foraging and puzzle-solving skills. Adult male Grant worked out that the boxes were full of snacks and grabbed as many Christmas gifts as he could, while 21-yearold Elvis quickly sussed how to open the boxes and got busy tucking into his favourite healthy treats of carrots and chickpeas. Visitors to the UK’s conservation zoo can join in with festive fun every weekend in December, and then every day from the 16 to 24 December. With a packed schedule of activities and talks to enjoy, every visit directly supports the work of ZSL – the international conservation charity. 90 DECEMBER 2023

• Daily Reindeer talks • Festive crafts • Christmas Creature Countdown: Throughout the Christmas period presenters will highlight a selection of Whipsnade’s special animal residents. Children can enter a competition to design enrichment for one of the featured animals and if their design is chosen by the keepers, they’ll win a return trip to Whipsnade Zoo to make the enrichment and give it the animals. Weekends from 2 December, then 16-24 December. Crafts in the Learning Hub (River Room); other activities, including competition entry, at animal exhibits.

Kylie Minogue’s incredible fashion evolution

As well as singing absolute bangers, the pop princess has had fun with fashion over the years.

fledged pop star. In honour of Minogue’s US residency, we’ve taken a look back at her fashion evolution – from puffy shirts to tiny gold hot pants and sleek red gowns…

THE EARLY YEARS

K

ylie Minogue took to the stage last month for the beginning of her Las Vegas residency. Minogue, 55, is the first headliner for new nightclub Voltaire at The Venetian Resort. The Padam Padam hitmaker has promised fans the experience will “more than just a residency”. Bursting onto the scene as Charlene in Aussie soap Neighbours back in 1986, it wasn’t long before Minogue established herself as a fully-

104 DECEMBER 2023

Minogue’s career began in the Eighties, and her style really was the epitome of this era. As Charlene, she had a wholesome ‘good-girl’ image, with a style to match. The newbie actor rocked a whole lot of fluffy hair, puffy shirts, and cheesy grins. While we still see a lot of Minogue’s mega-watt smile today, her outfits have come a long way.

A POP STAR IS BORN By the late Eighties and early Nineties, Minogue’s pop career was well underway, and she started slowly shedding her innocent image – with the

help of some edgier clothes. Her style choices became increasingly skin-tight and revealing, tapping into Nineties trends – including spaghetti straps and animal prints.

THE ROAD TO MEGA STARDOM It was when Minogue became a card-carrying, world-famous pop star that she really came into her own fashion-wise. ‘Low-key’ wasn’t something she was ever accused of, instead opting for figurehugging and skimpy clothing, both on stage and off. As her star continued to rise, Minogue’s colour palette largely revolved around glitzy golds and silvers, which went well with her new nickname, ‘the princess of pop’. Minogue reportedly had her pert behind insured for almost £3 million, and her fashion choices of the time often made sure it was well displayed. A little later came what was, unofficially, known as ‘the sheer years’, as Minogue proved herself a particular fan of see-through clothing.

KEEPING IT CLASSY As her career progressed, Minogue began to show us a sophisticated side to her fashion, without losing her sense of personal style. The pop star became a particular fan of dresses that nipped in her waist – a good style tip for more petite women (Minogue is 5ft) who want to wear longer dresses without looking swamped. She’s a firm fan of rocking a sleek red gown, and never let go of her love of all things sparkly – often still opting for gold and silver

embellishments on her dresses. Since her Aphrodite album came out in 2010, another of her fail-safe looks has been gorgeous Grecian-inspired gowns.

SMART AND FUN Minogue’s style shows she’s always up for trying new things – such as this smart tailored look in one of her favourite colours: gold. Tailoring has become a big part of Minogue’s aesthetic – often given a bit of an edge with interesting details such as racy cut-outs or unusual materials. Minogue’s looking better than ever – and you’ve got to respect her style for continuing to be bold and bright. DECEMBER 2023 105

SENSATIONAL SILVER Show your metal with these showstopping pieces, says Katie Wright

WOMEN’S SILVER SEQUIN VELOUR MINI PARTY DRESS, £42, AVAILABLE FROM THREADBARE

O

ne of biggest fashion trends of 2023 has gone stratospheric as the end of the year approaches – silver is the shade to be seen in this festive season. What started on the spring/summer catwalks with glitzy gowns at Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Jason Wu and Georgia Hardinge, went into overdrive with the arrival of Beyonce’s Renaissance World Tour. The pop icon took to the stage in a series of ’70s disco-meets-cyber cowgirl looks, continuing to unveil ever more elaborate silver costumes as the tour progressed. Fans followed suit, donning sequin-covered and metallic outfits to attend the show (it helped that the shops were full of catwalk-inspired designs all summer long). Now, the festive fashion collections have landed, and they’re awash with shimmering silver pieces that are perfect for partying. If it’s a sparkly frock you’re after, you’re spoilt for choice, with everything from bright, Beyonceworthy sequinned minidresses, to midi and wrap styles in more muted tones. The cool girl’s way to work the metallic look? It’s got to be a pair of foil trousers or mini skirt. Teamed with a black top and blazer (glitzy heels are optional), we predict these shiny separates will come in handy next summer too. For a sophisticated take on the trend, anchor your outfit around a gunmetal silver maxi skirt or wide-leg trousers, adding a satin blouse or strappy top.

Reasons the sofa is the most important

T

hink of one thing, anything, in an archetypal living room... Yes, we’re picturing a sofa too. Some pieces of furniture hold within them the power to transform. The sofa is one of these magical, room-changing design objects. It’s not just because they take up the most space or the alluring way they look, but how they make us feel and behave. The sofa epitomises tranquillity and switching-off. It’s committed to comfort, restfulness and unwinding - a physical declaration of me time, our time, down time, and nap time. The presence of a sofa brings the remainder of the living area together. The sofa needs an armchair or two. Now they need a rug. Next is a coffee table. What about a floor lamp? The sofa comes first; it pulls items around it into a group, serving as an anchor for the entire room, acting as the sun around which everything else revolves and draws energy from. Take a seat as we explore the sometimes surprising reasons that sofas are so uniquely impactful within the home, and the multifaceted roles the modern sofa plays. We’ll delve into the emotion tucked into the cushions and upholstery,

and discover how these seemingly simple pieces of furniture can shape our daily routines, host our most intimate conversations, and serve as supportive witnesses to our unfolding lives.

1 – SOFAS ADD STYLE AND CHARACTER As the largest furniture piece in a living room – an upholstered elephant in the room – the sofa automatically draws the eye. It contributes hugely to the aesthetic and feel, and can set the tone for the area’s overall style. The colour, upholstery and decorative choices of the modern sofa can be the defining elements that breathe life into a space – contemporary, colourful designs exuding modernity and energy, while classic forms in neutral palettes radiate timeless elegance and sophistication. Design and shape are just as important as the upholstery, with curves, angles, legs, arms and backs all narrating the style and story of the piece. These structural foundations can convey a sense of formality or familiarity, telling you whether to curl up and get cosy or sit upright for an official tete-a-tete, and turn the sofa into a beautiful sculptural object as well as a practical piece of seating. Pay attention to details like the legs, trim, and stitching, as these small-yet-significant touches often contribute to a high-quality, luxury feel, serving as a testament to the craft skills that went

piece of furniture into creating the piece, as well as enhancing the design’s overall appearance to give the seat a distinctive and luxurious edge. Sofas invite a finishing flourish for that extra flair. A contemporary sofa doesn’t feel complete without a selection of decorative cushions or a cosy throw positioned to be close at hand. Be they in colours, patterns or textures complementary to the body of the sofa and/or the room as a whole, or in contrasting styles, these little extras not only bring visual interest but also a personal touch to the piece making your sofa stylish, characterful and truly one-of-a-kind.

2 – SOFAS SHAPE THE ROOM’S LAYOUT As the main focal point in a room, a sofa’s placement significantly influences the space’s overall layout and dictates where people naturally gather. Whether placed against a wall or floating in the centre, a sofa’s positioning directs where people walk through the room as well as defining how light and air flow. The sofa is also vital to floor plans, its large size enabling it to divide rooms and create internal zones for different activities including living, dining, cooking or working. Other living furniture bows to the sofa, arranged in accordance to where it first settles. Accompanying pieces, such as coffee tables, side tables and lighting, follow and complement the sofa’s placement, building on it to create a balanced, functional space. The sofa’s orientation guides sitters’ attention to various views such as guests on the other side of the room, spots of natural light, or focal points like fireplaces, artwork, or Netflix’s latest must-watch. It’s not just about where you sit or what you’re sitting on; it’s about the world the sofa opens up for you to explore without even standing up. Now, the big question – should the sofa be against the wall or free- floating within the room? It all depends on the size of the area, and what you’re trying to achieve. A flush-to-the-wall set up can create an intimate, protected feel, while a floating seat helps to define open space and fosters a sense of fluidity.

it. It should be somewhere to slump, curl up and get cosy. It should support the back and arms. It should offer sleeping opportunities. Storage should be nearby, perhaps integrated? It should be snuggly. It should be cooling. It should create personal space. It should bring people together. The list goes on and on and on. The result? The modern sofa is the epitome of versatility, with modular designs becoming increasingly popular for their customisable aspects, so each sofa can be rearranged and configured to suit the space it’s in and the function needed from it. These designs can spread through rooms and around corners to create expansive, sociable seating areas as well as form compact loveseats and single person chairs. Interchangeable modules can be added such as: hard surfaces and storage, footstools, and different shaped arms or backs to meet multiple ever-changing needs. The style of the sofa can now also be edited, with pieces often available in a huge library of different colours, textures, materials and patterns to suit a wide range of interiors, and with smaller elements such as legs and cushions easily swappable for alternates. The modern sofa has become an expression of individuality, the same base design adaptable to create options spanning a high- backed sleek leather and chrome L shape to a low-slung floral and timber two-seater, offering limitless possibilities for tailoring its style and coordinating its look with diverse tastes and interior aesthetics. chaplins.co.uk

“As the main focal point in a room, a sofa’s placement significantly influences the space’s overall layout and dictates where people naturally gather”

CURATED HOMES WITH A PRACTICAL FOCUS M indful Minimalism is going to be big news in 2024, according to independent tile specialists Porcelain Superstore. The retailer – which specialises in beautiful porcelain and ceramic tiles – believe homeowners are going to be taking a more curated view when it comes to designing their living spaces, prioritising homewares with a purpose as well as aesthetic appeal. Abbas Youssefi, Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “Minimalism was a huge trend 20 years ago. But as more people started welcoming the world into their homes via social media, it brought with it a maximalist shift in an attempt to wow.

“Homeowners are going to be taking a more curated view when it comes to designing their living spaces, prioritising homewares with a purpose as well as aesthetic appeal”

“But now we are seeing a move to a more considered approach. Homeowners are looking for calm and are buying with intention, finding pieces that look great and serve a purpose. We are not going to see a return to the starkness of noughties minimalism, instead we are looking at a more mindful approach.” Typified by clean lines, natural materials and more neutral shades, Mindful Minimalism is all about living more intentionally – investing in timeless pieces that will last. Here Abbas picks his favourite designs from Porcelain Superstore’s collections – all of which will inject a dose of Mindful Minimalism wherever they are used.

ABOUT PORCELAIN SUPERSTORE Independent and family-run, the brothers behind Porcelain Superstore might have been brought up in the tile industry, but they aren’t afraid of shaking it up. Northern Exposure:

Add warmth to north facing rooms

D

esigning a scheme for a northfacing room brings with it a unique challenge, according to the experts at eco paint specialists Victory Colours. The light in a north facing space has a much higher proportion of blue light compared to warmer south facing rooms, casting a blue tint in interior spaces. Embracing limited natural light can make a space feel colder and darker. Here Victoria Yardley, Managing Director of Victory Colours, shares her top tips for creating a warming, welcoming colour scheme. 1. Avoid Blues & Greys Light in a north facing room can be limited therefore, opting for lighter and warmer shades will enhance your space, creating a more inviting feel. 2. Warm It Up Warmer shades and hues have the capability to infuse warmth whilst adding a cosy touch, helping to compensate for any cooler light that enters the room. Creamy whites, subtle yellows or a blush pink could be the way to go.

3. Stay Grounded Earthy and neutral colour palettes can provide a sense of grounding and warmth to a space. Tones such as muted browns, soft terracottas and warm taupes can create a welcoming and comfortable feel amongst the surroundings. 4. Go Eco When selecting the colour that is right for you, quality eco paints will ensure a stylish and sustainable solution. These high quality ecofriendly paints not only enhance your space but will also allow you to entirely transform your room.
