What does it take to become a personal travel manager?
Founder of Winged Boots, David Ox, gives us in an insight into providing travel that’s out of the ordinary
18 MARCH 2019
“Winged Boots’ personal travel managers live and breathe the brand and give blood, sweat and tears to every booking”
Y
ou’ve spent hours scanning the web trying to find that ideal destination with your favourite cocktail on the hotel bar menu and you’ve given up. That’s where luxury travel specialist, Winged Boots, and its personal travel managers step in. However, forget waking up at eight for cornflakes to get to work for nine. Personalising holidays to every individual client’s wants and needs is not a ‘9-5’ job, as founder and managing director, David Ox, tells us… Originating from a black book of clients, Ox grew the business through providing great service to a small number of clients, who then referred their friends to him after appreciating the benefits of a bespoke experience. He now oversees the 20+ team and networks at a range of events to gain more customers: “A big part of my job is to find new clients and to also keep our existing ones happy, so I spend at least a couple of days a week in the city networking and following up on potential leads,” David says. “Certain people will only deal with me, so while the personal managers handle all the leads, I do still deal with some of the enquiries. No two enquiries, and no two days, are ever the same.” Another thing to put the personal travel managers under pressure? The average booking window for Winged Boots is only three months! Ox explains: “Winged Boots’ personal travel managers live and breathe the brand and give blood, sweat and tears to every booking. They’re looking after high net worth, demanding clients so these guys have to be on it 24/7. Our job is a lifestyle choice.” The calendar seems to expand at a quicker rate than places on your travel bucket list, with upcoming holidays and events in the interest of the company’s clients constantly being announced, so the personal travel managers must have their eye on the travel ball continuously. “The team have been busy organising all the flights for the recently announced Anthony Joshua fight in New York on the 1st June so there’s been lots of chopping and changing in the office of late,” David explains. Last minute bookings are how the team here roll. Along with a September wedding in Lake Como, business trips to South Africa and Orlando, and Christmas enquiries already trickling in, being a personal travel manager requires expert knowledge and a lot of juggling. However, it’s Winged Boots’ pledge of ‘going the extra mile’, which is what Ox says he is most proud of: “We’re willing to do what other agencies are not.
Whether it’s picking up the phone at 10pm on a Friday night to book a flight that departs at 9am the next day or trying to get complimentary upgrades or refunds where they’re due, we work around the clock fighting our clients’ corner.” You could be wondering by now how you haven’t come across Winged Boots before. Traditional advertising is a no-no here, and all the team’s efforts are drilled into the brand’s original concept lifestyle brochure magazine and events programme, which gives customers a little something extra. “We offer our clients tickets to shows at the O2 arena and host private dinners in London. We organised our first golf day in summer 2018 which was a massive success, so we’re constantly inviting our clients to interesting new events and networking with them,” Ox says. The final question is what are the rewards of the job? “I think it’s 70% enjoyable, 20% stressful and 10% completely unknown - but what job isn’t!” laughs Ox.

“T
here is no other country in the world, besides my own, whose way of life I like so much. I love English traditions, English politeness, English architecture. I even love English cooking.” Christian Dior (1905–57) The V&A has opened the largest exhibition ever staged in the UK on the House of Dior – the museum’s biggest fashion exhibition since Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty in 2015. From 1947 to the present day, Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams traces the history and impact of one of the 20th century’s most influential couturiers, and the six artistic directors who have succeeded him, to explore the enduring influence of the fashion house. Based on the major exhibition Christian Dior: Couturier du Rêve, organised by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, the exhibition is reimagined for the V&A. A brand-new section explores, for the first time, the designer’s fascination with British culture. Dior admired the grandeur of the great houses and gardens of Britain, as well as Britishdesigned ocean liners, including the Queen Mary. He also had a preference for Savile Row suits. His first UK fashion show took place at London’s Savoy Hotel, and in 1952 he established Christian Dior London. The exhibition investigates Dior’s creative collaborations with British manufacturer, also
focusing on his most notable early British clients, from author Nancy Mitford to ballet dancer Margot Fonteyn. A highlight will be the Christian Dior dress worn by Princess Margaret for her 21st birthday celebrations, generously on loan from the Museum of London following conservation work. The exhibition also brings to life Dior’s spectacular fashion shows staged in the UK’s most luxurious stately homes, including Blenheim Palace in 1954, of which several ensembles are now in the V&A’s collection. Drawn from the extensive Dior Archives, the exhibition presents over 500 objects, with over 200 rare Haute Couture garments shown alongside accessories, fashion photography, film, vintage perfume, original make-up, illustrations, magazines, and Christian Dior’s personal possessions. It also showcases highlights from the V&A’s world-class Couture collections, including the iconic Bar Suit, gifted to the museum by the House of Dior in 1960 with the help of Cecil Beaton. The exhibition highlights Dior’s total design vision, encompassing garments, accessories and fragrances, revealing the sources of inspiration that defined the House of Dior’s aesthetic. From the daring designs of Yves Saint Laurent to the rational style of Marc Bohan, the flamboyance of Gianfranco Ferré, the exuberance of John Galliano, the minimalism of Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri’s feminist vision of fashion, the exhibition shows how each successive artistic director has stayed true to Dior’s vision of Haute Couture, while bringing their own creative sensibilities to the House. Designers for Dior also spotlights the work of the subsequent six key artistic directors since Christian Dior’s death in 1957.

THE BOAT RACE 2019 PREVIEW W Sunday 7th April 2019, 2.15pm & 3.15pm
atched by thousands along the banks of the River Thames and by millions more on TV around the world, The Boat Race is the world’s most famous rowing race, and one of the biggest free sporting events in London. The annual contest between two rowing crews from Oxford and Cambridge universities, is one of the oldest sporting rivalries, following a challenge between old school friends. The first ever Men’s Boat Race took place in 1829 in Henley on Thames. Since the second race in 1836 the contest has taken place in London. The first ever Women’s Boat Race took place in 1927 and moved to the Championship Course in 2015. April 2019 will see the running of the 165th Men’s Boat Race and 74th Women’s Boat Race. Both Cambridge crews wear light blue, whilst Oxford crews wear dark blue. The Boat Race course is 4 miles, 374 yards or 6.8 km long and starts downstream at Putney Bridge and passes under Hammersmith Bridge and Barnes Bridge before finishing just before Chiswick Bridge. The crews who win the coin toss before the Race

choose which side (or station) they will race on. The stations are known as Middlesex and Surrey, with advantages and disadvantages for each side because of the bends in the river. The teams compete in eight-oared rowing boats, each steered by a cox who sits in the stern or back of the boat. The cox is the only crew member who faces in the direction they are moving. On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames to witness the action. Remember, all the riverside pubs will be heaving, with the crowds spilling out onto the towpaths. If you’re planning to watch from a pub, arrive early! There are large screens at Bishops Park, Fulham and Furnival Gardens, Hammersmith where you will be able to watch the whole Race before and after the crews have passed. The parks will also feature food outlets, beer stands and merchandising stalls. The 2019 Boat Race start times: The Women’s Boat Race 2.15pm; The Men’s Boat Race 3.15pm. BBC1 will be broadcasting live, or you can watch the action online. For more information visit www.theboatrace.org

An Interview with Kuldip Chohan Judge on BBC1 ‘The Best House in Town’ H ave you ever wanted to snoop in on a neighbour’s house? The desire to want to obtain a glimpse into the lifestyle of others is almost primeval. Given the abundance of social media platforms providing ready and often instantaneous access into the lives of others, our collective inquisition on what goes on behind closed doors is insatiable. Last month saw the launch of a new BBC daytime show in which a group of individuals got to do exactly that. The series called ‘The Best House in Town’ aired on BBC1 and has raised an incredible amount of interest. Travelling around the country, each week sees a focus on one location and visits to proud home owners. Local representatives provide their verdict on which house they believe represents the best of the shortlisted properties. The series featured homes within and around St Albans, where we took the opportunity to meet one of the judges, Kuldip Chohan, and ask him about his experience on the show. How did you become involved? I was approached by the production company who asked me to audition for a position as a judge. I was naturally flattered but equally nervous and excited too. There was quite a demand on time as we filmed over a week, so it meant juggling commitments. I don’t believe any of us were prepared for what followed!
What qualifies you to be a judge? As the owner of Gallery Rouge, I have visited thousands of homes over the last decade, observing homes span the spectrum from poor to impeccable taste or layout. Whilst my expertise is in the arts, I have strong grounding around spatial planning, interior design and colour coordination. That holistic approach is often what my clients look for from me on a daily basis, and I suppose is where my point of view was desired to provide balance.
“Whilst my expertise is in the arts, I have strong grounding around spatial planning, interior design and colour coordination”
Not everything you saw would have been to your taste – how do you provide negative feedback? We were incredibly grateful for the homeowners allowing us in and were mindful that we didn’t have a full picture

of the home. For example, we didn’t get to meet the occupants beforehand so had no frame of reference as to their family makeup, the budget they had, or timeframe involved in turning their house into their home. I approached the process as I would with any client, or indeed artist – impartially and objectively. This wasn’t about ‘would I dress my home like this’. We had firm criteria from which to base our judgement, and I tried to stay true to those. I was conscious though that some of my comments may not be well received. In my profession I am used to providing critique – I tried to highlight areas that I felt could have benefited from a little more thought or addressed with minimal financial outlay. What did you learn? As in the appreciation of art, we don’t all like the same things and we don’t all have the same style. That’s what makes each of us unique and individual. I really admired those who had dared to be different, who had pushed the boundaries of convention and been bold in asserting their personality. This was never about right or wrong, and it was great to see so
much passion expended by homeowners in making a mark on their homes. Your house is probably the most costly asset you’ll ever own, and it reinforced my belief that you should invest in making it the best home it can possibly be. What’s your home like, and would you let people snoop around your house? I live in a modern town house, which I absolutely adore. Living over three levels means you must carefully plan how you wish to use each floor, and I feel we’ve got the balance right. Yes, it’s full of artwork as you’d probably expect, but the art is deliberately curated to create a different sense of style for each room. I’m proud of my home, and feel confident in sharing it with others, although my wife would be more reserved.
THE DETAILS If you would like to engage Kuldip’s expertise, why not give him a call and see if he can help you turn your house into a home.
Would you do it again? Who knows! I must admit I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it, and it has been an immense amount of fun and an amazing experience. There are things I’ve learnt that I’d do differently. If I were lucky enough to be asked, I’d have to say yes!

o celebrate the arrival of the much anticipated Dior exhibition to London, this season’s Prêt-à-Portea at The Berkeley sees the iconic designs of the House of Dior take to the cake stand for an unprecedented solo show inspired by “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams” at the V&A museum. Working exclusively with Dior, this fashionista favourite adds an innovative twist to the traditional afternoon tea, and sees legendary Dior designs translated into creatively crafted cakes and patisserie. Headlining this season’s Couture Prêt-à-Portea is the Bar Suit, synonymous with Dior since it first took to the catwalk in 1947 as part of Christian Dior’s debut collection. Celebrated as the New Look, it becomes a rich chocolate biscuit embellished with cream royal icing. The collection also includes a red velvet cake inspired by the Lady Dior Handbag which shot to fame in 1995 when France’s first lady, Bernadette Chirac gifted it to Princess Diana, to a bottle of Miss Dior Eau de Parfum inspired by the designer’s own sister, Catherine, reimagined as a lychee and raspberry cake glazed with shimmering pink icing, complete with signature oversized silver bow. And finally, an edible homage in celebration of the imminent return of sling back season, Dior’s J’Adior shoe from the current collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri strides on to the cake stand as a vanilla biscuit with royal icing finished with its inscription bow in edible sugar ribbon. The Berkeley’s Pastry Chef Mourad Khiat comments “It was important for me to respectfully emulate Monsieur Dior’s timeless and iconic fairytale gowns using ingredients that best celebrate these opulent and beautiful creations. Seeing the exquisite garments displayed in real life at the V&A really makes me appreciate the detail and precision that goes into these ingenious designs.” Prêt-à-Portea – The Dior Couture collection is served in the Collins Room at The Berkeley from 1pm - 5.30pm every day priced at £58 per person; £68 including a glass of Laurent Perrier champagne, or £74 per person including a glass of rosé champagne. n 15 March the Saatchi Gallery will open It’s the Surreal Thing, an exhibition of new works by the artist Sr. X, in the Prints & Originals Gallery. Whether executed in the streets or in the studio, the works of Sr. X are striking and unforgettable. Employing retro imagery, pop culture icons, surrealist twists and dada mischief the artist produces works of satirical brilliance. Sr. X creates works that subvert the constant advertising we are exposed to and the images of aspirational perfection that are directed at us all. This new body of work has been created in the past six months. It reveals a staggering breath of imagination - very rarely is any work like any other. The artist continues to use creativity as a weapon against conformism and the sugary sweet diet of contemporary consumerism. Familiar elements remain such as pulp magazine portraits, cartoon figures and advertising slogans. But more dada and surrealist elements have started to appear. In works such as Entropy the artist is also producing works of greater contemplative and emotional depth. This new body of work has been created in the past six months. MILL & BREW: THE HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE TO A GREASY SPOON! By Oliver Motisi, nutrional advisor and development chef
M
ill & Brew is a cosy brunch spot on The Broadway in Mill Hill, but there is a lot more going on behind the veil of smashed avocado and sourdough! Our passionate chefs pride themselves on sourcing local, free range and organic products and we strive to keep our menu simple and seasonal. With the ever-increasing research denoting the health benefits of eating organic as opposed to ‘conventional’ food products it was an easy decision to make M&B healthier than your generic café. Bye-bye greasy spoon and hello baba-ghanoush on toast. Our philosophy when creating our dishes is simple – first, it has to taste good! Long forgotten are the days of force feeding yourself dry chicken and rice! Secondly, it has to be nutrient-dense. This simply means, foods that are high in nutrients but relatively low in calories. Quinoa is the perfect example of a nutritionally advantageous food with a smaller calorie count. With local athletes frequenting our restaurant – Saracens Rugby players and North London boxers to name a few – this is a major reason why we see their return custom. With the common misconception that we must stuff our faces with protein and purge carbohydrates in order to get stronger and leaner, we’re inadvertently putting ourselves at a disadvantage. This over consumption is resulting in depleted glycogen stores and our bodies running off protein as an energy source! The average gym goer only requires 1.4-1.7g of protein per kilogram of bodyweight, which for a 70kg male is 98-119g.
34 MARCH 2019
So, how can we at Mill & Brew help? We have a plethora of homemade, healthy and tasty options available, all made fresh daily. For example, our organic oatmeal porridge is exactly what you need to top up those pre-gym glycogen stores, all whilst getting your antioxidant hit to fight against those nasty free radicals. Then once you’ve finished lifting in the gym, you can find a beautiful protein salad ready and waiting for you, topped with an organic British egg to maximise that net protein utilisation perfectly balanced with those low GI carbohydrates.

ST ALBANS BASED WRITER TALKS ABOUT HIS CAREER IN CRIME
M
.J. Arlidge, the bestselling novelist and screenwriter is a relative newcomer to writing. After working in television production for nearly two decades, he decided to try his hand at writing. ‘I had always wanted to write’ Arlidge explains ‘but took years to pluck up the courage. Then, as I was approaching my 40th birthday, I decided that it was now or never. Eeny Meeny was the result, and screenwriting followed soon after’ adds Matt. Eeny Meany was in fact the biggest crime debut of 2014 and selected for the Richard & Judy Book Club. It was the first instalment of the bestselling Helen Grace series, which has now sold over one million copies and one of the most successful crime series to be launched in the last decade. Arlidge’s screenwriting career has been every bit as successful. After a spell on BBC’s Silent Witness he wrote and produced Innocent for ITV, an original screenplay starring Hermione Norris and Lee Ingleby. ‘Writing for established shows like Silent Witness was great fun, but it did feel strange servicing characters that someone else had created. Innocent was a wonderful experience’ says Matt. ‘I made it with three close friends and every minute was a blast. There are few things more exhilarating than watching an idea you had a couple of years before, take shape and finally make it onto the nation’s screens’ he adds. This spring sees the launch of new novel for the crime writer. A Gift for Dying is Arlidge’s first standalone novel which is already receiving plaudits from reviewers. Described by one as ‘a masterclass in mystery and suspense’ the story follows a teenage girl who claims to have the power to predict when and

how you will die. ‘It’s an epic serial killer thriller set in modern-day Chicago’ says Matt ‘I’m hugely proud of it.’ he added smiling. The novel is a departure from both the Helen Grace series and the more familiar UK setting for his books, but one he obviously enjoyed undertaking. ‘Chicago is a vibrant, modern pioneering city that is also riven with social tension and violence - it’s homicide rate is higher than that of NYC and LA combined’ Matt explains. ‘So, what better place to set a crime novel in?’ The violence of Chicago is a far cry from Arlidge’s home in St Albans. The novelist, who originally hails from London, moved to Hertfordshire when he and his wife started a family. ‘We were living in a top floor flat in North London but didn’t fancy lugging a buggy up and down the stairs’ Matt recalls. ‘So we visited St Albans and we fell in love with the place. It’s such a friendly, vibrant community that we felt instantly at home.’ Their move to the area proved fruitful and occasionally provides inspiration for the novelist, who often retreats to his local Waterstones to write. ‘I like people-watching. I have my headphones on, my laptop open, but all around me, life goes on, different characters passing by. I often wonder who they are, what makes them tick. Occasionally they even make it in to my book, if they are particularly striking looking!’. So will his home town feature in a future book? ‘No specific plans as yet’ Matt responds. ‘But I know it’s going to happen sometime. St Albans is such a striking city and has a history rich in bloodshed, conquest and espionage that it would be foolish not to use it at some point.’ A Gift for Dying by M.J. Arlidge is published by Michael Joseph, £12.99

id you know that one of Britain’s best known artists lived and worked in Hertfordshire? Sculptor Henry Moore moved to the picturesque hamlet of Perry Green, near Much Hadham, in 1940, having been bombed out of his London studio. He remained there for the rest of his life, creating some of his most recognisable sculptures in the on-site studios. Moore’s estate is now a stunning sculpture garden, open to visitors from April until October each year. The gardens feature many of his iconic bronzes and his studios have been preserved giving you the chance to discover how a modern master created his artworks. Also on show in 2019 will be Henry Moore Drawings: The Art of Seeing - the largest exhibition of Moore’s drawings in over 40 years. Stress and how to ease it H
ow is it that some of us seem to deal with stress and others seem to crumble? What is stress and how can we improve our emotional resilience? Each of us is unique and we operate uniquely. Most of us are good at some things and not so good at others. There will always be someone who is better, faster, prettier, stronger, cleverer, but being OK with who you are and content with how you optimise yourself as a person, is healthy. Thinking in a binary, black and white, fixed way can cause stress. A lack of self-awareness can be problematical to you understanding you can deal with pressured situations. Another big player in creating stress is a lack of positive regard…. from others and towards yourself. Positive regard from others is usually offered, or not offered in childhood and it usually comes from parents. So, this positive regard is an essential requirement for all humans and if there has been a lack of positive self-regard, this is very likely to cultivate a behavioural pattern attributing personal success to coincidence or luck rather than attaching it to talent, ability or hard work. Three big elements in fostering internal stress are: lack of positive self-regard, a fixed and/or perfectionist attitude and a lack of self-awareness.
44 MARCH 2019
So, how can we develop positive self-regard, increased flexibility and fuller self-awareness? Not easily or quickly would be my immediate answer, but… I often suggest to my clients that they prepare a list of their successes and positive personality characteristics and together we then gradually evaporate the distorting ‘just lucky concept’ and regain a rational sense of achievement and selfpraise or positive regard. Being more accepting and flexible is tough, but it moves you away from rights and wrongs and towards acceptance that OK is OK. Thirdly, becoming more self-aware is essential and examining yourself is very difficult, but mindfully saying, “What do I actually think and feel is the genuine authentic truth?”, can help. The ability of being able to then place a disappointment or set back by assigning it to logical external elements and influences, rather than perceived personal failings, builds an emotional toughness. It sounds a bit boring, but knowing yourself, accepting the true you and aiming for OK is pretty good. Debbie Hague works with therapy organisation, Emotionalskills, in Hertfordshire. The smell of the gingerbread and log fire was so welcoming. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist and then shown to our room by the porter, John. We were lucky enough to be staying in one of the Mews suites, a short walk out of the hotel and through some beautiful gates, making it a more private and luxury place to stay. As John showed us to our suite, he explained that now refurbished, it was once an old stable block. There are 16 mews suites, all surrounded by beautiful flowers and twinkly lights – and right in the centre an infinity hydrotherapy pool for Mews guests only. I felt like I was part of some sort of luxury and exclusive club. The room we stayed in was called Hornbeam. John made sure we knew

where everything was and how everything worked, again illustrating to us that Sopwell House prides itself on amazing customer service and attention to detail. My husband and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and the staff had gone over and above by leaving us rose petals on the bed, a card and complimentary macaroons in our room – a lovely touch. The suite was so impressive and elegantly decorated. The living area had a fireplace and beautiful sofas and the bed was huge and so comfortable. The bathroom was spotless with an array of luxury products included and a huge rainfall shower head. My husband and I thought this would be a great time to try the hydro pool out, so we were impressed to see flip flops and extra towels available as well as big white fluffy dressing gowns. It was the perfect hour with glass of bubbles in hand, relaxing whilst the sun went down and all garden started to light up. It was completely relaxing and romantic all at the same time, what a way to spend the afternoon – and we were lucky enough to get that time all to ourselves. In the evening we booked into the restaurant, stopping in the cocktail bar first for a Special Festive cocktail and it was stunning. We were greeted and shown to our table in the restaurant which had pretty lighting and relaxing music thanks to the resident pianist. The staff were so attentive and everyone was so lovely to wish us a happy anniversary and remember our names – I really felt this was such a nice touch.

After a glass of Champagne and some yummy amuse bouche sent from the chef, we decided to order our courses. I went for roasted quail to start, then opted for Norfolk turkey and chocolate log for dessert. My husband went for press of black leg chicken to start, rump of lamb for main and cheese board to follow. The assistant restaurant manager Lorenzo recommend a wine to go along with our meals as we fancied a nice bottle of red and we went for a Malbec which was to die for and went gloriously with our meal. Throughout the meal we were looked after by Alina who was attentive, professional and so happy-go-lucky she really made the service for us. The food at Sopwell House is incredible, every mouthful was bursting with flavour and so inventive with twists and turns with a touch of something different. We were lucky enough to meet the chef and give him our compliments. After dinner we retired to the bar in the conservatory where we were looked after by Dale. My husband is partial to a Bloody Mary and I love an Espresso Martini. Dale was keen to make sure our cocktails were to our tastes – asking for souror sweet or spicy or very spicy Bloody Mary’s! I can honestly say this was the first time my husband hasn’t sent back his Bloody Mary to be spicier! I can honestly say this was the first time my husband hasn’t sent back his Bloody Mary to be more spicy. It was a lovely end to a spectacular day and night at Sopwell House and I can honestly say without question we will be back and will make use of the spa. From start to finish it was an incredible stay topped off with a beautiful English breakfast and a walk of the grounds.
If you want amazing customer service, luxury rooms and incredible food with inventive cocktails plus a spa to top it all off, Sopwell is for you. ony Jacobs is on a mission: to introduce young people to some of the greatest music, song and dance ever written and performed. His Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra, which specialises in the British and American dance band music of the Roaring ‘20s and Thrilling ‘30s, has joined forces with the UK’s premier Swing Dance Company, the Swing Time Jivers, to create the most exciting and entertaining song-and-dance show in the UK :‘Shake That Thing! The Great British Swing Dance Show’ which comes to the Alban Arena on Saturday May 11th at 7.30pm. As well as recreating dances such as the Charleston, Lindy Hop, Big Apple, Chorus Tap and the Black Bottom, the show also pays tribute to the incomparable Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in numbers such as the timeless ‘Cheek To Cheek’. ‘Whenever young people are brought to our shows, by the end of the evening, they are completely blown away by the sheer vitality of the music and dance’ says Tony. So, to encourage more youngsters (and their friends and families) to attend the concert, members of the Swing Time Jivers have invited students from a local dance school – the Let’s Dance Academy – to participate in a three hour workshop. They will be taught a Swing Dance which they will then perform with the Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra during the evening’s performance. St. Francis’ College
celebrates 85th Anniversary I n 1933 a group of Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary from Ghent came to Letchworth Garden City to open St. Francis’ College. They would be delighted to know that the College continues to thrive and celebrated its 85th Anniversary in 2018. The College opened its doors in September 1933. The kindergarten and preparatory department opened on September 4th and the residential and senior school on September 20th. The College opened with 29 pupils, but numbers soon increased to 200 by the end of the 1930s. Plans were quickly drawn up to build a new building for the College overlooking the Broadway and in 1939 the large Broadway building was opened just as the Second World War began. Over the last 85 years there have been many changes at the College. There have been physical improvements and additions to the building and teaching in the 21st century bears no resemblance
54 MARCH 2019
to what took place in the early days, but the College continues to offer a wide range of extra- curricular activities as well as encouraging girls to do their best in their academic studies just as they did in the 1930s. The Sisters continued to run the College until 1983 when they decided they wished to focus their attention on other areas of work, and the management of the College was handed over to St. Francis’ College Trust. The College became and still is a multi-denominational Christian community that welcomes pupils of all or no faith. In 2019 St. Francis’ College can be proud of its achievements over the last 85 years. It is a happy, successful school where pupils thrive in an environment that recognises the unique qualities of each individual. rospective parents often ask us for a definition of the St Hilda’s USP. This is summed up in our banner slogan ‘Nurturing the individual’ and is quantified in our daily aim to ensure that our pupils can access as broad a range of learning experiences as possible. Developing resilience for our fastchanging world is achieved within a safe, caring and family atmosphere where the needs of each and every child are attended to. St Hilda’s has been part of the Harpenden community for over 125 years and our pupils receive a first-class education. In a world where relentless pressure can cause huge anxiety for the rising generation of our society, our mission at St Hilda’s is to ensure that our pupils can develop self-confidence and self-worth as paramount aims. This is summed up by these spontaneous comments of appreciation from parents whose children are at the beginning, middle and end of their St Hilda’s careers: ‘If the pursuit of happiness is a life ideal, one only has to witness the arrival of the children each morning to see that you have achieved that so brilliantly. You have opened the door to the world of education and have shown your pupils what an amazing and exciting place that can be.’ ‘Over the period that we have been at St. Hilda’s, your amazing staff have encouraged and inspired

I cannot thank you enough.’ ‘It goes without saying that the years have flown by but, in child-aged time, each day and week has had an impact and we are so grateful for all the positive influences our child has experienced at St Hilda’s.’ Our Early Years Department provides a fabulous learning environment and a terrific grounding, building confidence and inspiring our pupils to develop a ‘can do’ attitude whilst giving them an academically stimulating experience that links seamlessly into the rest of the School. At the other end of their St Hilda’s journey, our girls advance to Senior School well prepared for the next stage of their education and life beyond. We certainly believe that our all-round learning experience equips our pupils with the passport to their next destination. Love Handles - AAARGHH! Tumbleweed. Dandelions on your lawn. Gremlins. Those are all things that are notoriously hard to get rid of. But not quite as hard, I think, as getting rid of love handles…
I
f you’ve tried losing weight, it’s quite likely that you’ve slimmed down all over – but those bulges around your gut are still there, spilling over the tops of your jeans and making it hard to wear fitted clothes. It’s similarly possible to whittle away every ounce of spare body fat through exercise – and yet still keep your love handles. They are usually the last thing to go, and for many people, never go at all.
Why do they so incredibly difficult to shift? Two reasons. First of all, some people simply have a genetic predisposition to storing fat around their love handles – just as others are predisposed to storing fat around their tummies or thighs. That’s their natural body shape, and it has nothing to do with weight. You can be extremely lean, but you still have to store fat somewhere. Often, hormones are a factor too. High levels of oestrogen are associated with body fat being stored around the love handle area - in men as well as women. Second of all, it’s impossible to target your love handles with specific exercises, like you might target your arms, glutes or abs. Sure, you can do exercises that burn fat all over your body – but if your love handles are where your body likes storing fat, they’re not going anywhere. I know how frustrating this is from personal experience. I played squash at competitive level, was very careful with what I ate and yet my shirts never fitted me right because I just could not get rid of my love handles. I cannot tell you how many times I considered 66 MARCH 2019
giving up my exercise and diet, because after all that effort – and despite being very fit – I still didn’t like my shape. Ultimately I realised that my love handles were not going away on their own, and that the only solution was to get some help from aesthetic medicine. (I chose Vaser, but as you already know, there are terrific non-surgical options.)
“If you, too, have tried diet and exercise but are still plagued by your love handles, it may be the best solution for you as well” If you, too, have tried diet and exercise but are still plagued by your love handles, it may be the best solution for you as well. If that is an option you would like to explore further, why not book a consultation with me at our Harpenden or London clinic. We will take a medical history, discuss what kind of results you want to achieve, and review the options to find the treatment that best fits with your goals, lifestyle and budget. If you’re already pretty sure you know which procedure you want, we’ll confirm you are a suitable candidate and put together your bespoke treatment plan. We are more than happy to work with your personal trainers as well to optimise your outcomes. We also have our in house personal trainer Ros Jaffa who will help you put together a long-term plan to maintain your results – and get the most out of any treatment.

Your New Season update:
THE BLAZER
I
f there’s one purchase you need to make to update your New Season wardrobe, a blazer should be it. The blazer is one item you will never regret buying, a must-have in your transitional wardrobe it will see you through Spring into Summer. As the weather gauge slips over the 15 degree mark – you can ditch the cumbersome coats and suffocating scarves – your focus will turn to which jacket styles and shapes are set to be ‘the thing’ for spring. Blazers never go out of fashion and give you endless styling options. From a simple jeans and tee look, to teaming with Summer dresses; I love the versatility of this chic wardrobe essential. It is the answer to every dressing dilemma and can transform an outfit from boring to super stylish. If I was forced to wear the same thing every day for the rest of my life, I’d choose a blazer. A good one
68 MARCH 2019
makes you look as put-together, even if you’re just wearing it with Converse and a white T-shirt. A blazer jacket is also very versatile, it doesn’t have to be a structured one, but can hang loose and be a jersey fabric that can be used as a cardigan replacement which is much more chic. You can play around with colour and texture with a blazer jacket, but classic black is great for work and evening wear. I love a jacket with some detailing on it like embroidery, brocade, sequins, something that really adds some style to your outfit and will ensure that you can wear anything plain underneath but always look well put together. Checks continue to be the must-have pattern for blazers right now, this is a great way of getting print into your wardrobe and adding personality to your style. Styling your blazer is simple, wear it on it’s own or with a big scarf on chillier mornings. You can also double it up underneath coats or just draped over the shoulders, rather than worn with the arms through the sleeves, but that’s fashion, not function. Believe me it will be the hardest working item in your wardrobe this season and it gives you endless versatility for new outfits over the current clothes you own over the next couple of months. A structured blazer can easily make your outfit polished in one simple step, and a boxier silhouette will provide a more relaxed vibe rather than looking too stuffy. This piece will have you moving from work to happy hour seamlessly. Early diagnosis is key to successful treatment of arthritis
A
rthritis is common worldwide and is associated with significantly impaired quality of life and disability. So far, 207 types of arthritides have been identified highlighting the diagnostic challenge for patients and health care professionals. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most common types of arthritis affecting 1% of the population. The condition affects approximately three times more women than men and its onset is generally in the 5th and 6th decades however it may occur at any age. Uncontrolled RA leads to significantly reduced quality of life and premature mortality primarily as a consequence of increased cardiovascular disease. However, the outlook for patients has altered dramatically over the past few years with disease remission now the therapeutic goal. This is dependent on a number of critical interventions and the role of our patients is pivotal in the process. There is a ‘window of opportunity’ for people diagnosed with RA. Those diagnosed and started on optimal treatment within 12-weeks stand a much better chance of achieving remission. However we know that many people with RA are not being diagnosed and treated in time. Poor public awareness and a lack of timely referral are causing significant delays. Research
70 MARCH 2019
shows that people with symptoms of RA usually wait a number of months before first going to see their GP and then visit their GP several more times before being referred on to a specialist for diagnosis. Following presentation to primary care, patients with symptoms and signs of an inflammatory arthritis should be referred to a rheumatologist. This imperative has been highlighted in the NICE guideline on the treatment of RA. The guideline suggests urgent referral if any of the following apply: • the small joints of the hands or feet are affected • >1 joint is affected • there has been a delay of >3 months between onset of symptoms and seeking medical advice. The basis for this advice lies in the observation that early disease is more amenable to intervention. A window of opportunity exists whereby early treatment results in a greater chance of inducing remission. Ideally, this should be within six weeks of symptom onset. As a proportion of patients who develop severe persistent inflammatory arthritis will have normal investigations at disease onset (e.g. rheumatoid factor, anti- CCP antibodies, ESR, CRP and X-rays) they should be referred regardless. Similarly the referral should not be delayed pending investigations.

HERTS FIT FEST 5-8 July 2019
H
erts Fit Fest was created to be celebration of everything health and fitness related, designed to bring people together through fitness in a non-judgemental environment. They’ve bought everything to one venue, you can sweat it out with a whole range of high intensity classes, learn new skills with the likes of pole dance, aerial and hoop training, build confidence in a self-defence session, groove to the beat in a dance class, or get zen with a restorative workout for the mind and body. You can fill up on healthy food and drinks as well as grab a barista style coffee and browse through fitness clothing, health products, supplements and much more. Not to mention the evening parties and if you choose to stay, the beautiful bell tents you can treat yourself to. When Emma Sills set out to create Herts Fit Fest, it was to make health and fitness easily accessible to all. Having originally come from a corporate background as a senior manager for 10 years in one of the top 4 accounting companies in the UK, Emma’s passion for fitness lead her next career step to the fitness industry where she joined the management team of a small 24hr gym operator. She grew this company from one to five gyms, whilst also competing in the largest Natural Bodybuilding Federation in the UK, winning the figure category to become top in the UK, earning a professional status and then placing 3rd in the world finals in Miami. It is with this drive and passion to share all things health and fitness to help others that Herts Fit Fest was created. Herts Fit Fest is here to encourage lifestyle changes, to change the way we view physical activity and give people an insight into the many ways you can become a happier and healthier version of yourself. You don’t need to be a size 8 fitness fanatic to come along, there are no criteria to get involved in the classes, all shapes, sizes and abilities
are celebrated. Herts Fit Fest brings, not only all the favourite classes, but also fitness styles to the festival that are different and new to festival goers, as well as support, help and advice for those looking for it. One main aim of the festival is to showcase a variety of ways to get active and get support. Sometimes fitness/classes are inaccessible to the everyday person due to location/cost and/or even confidence. This was a driving force behind bringing everything to one location with fabulous and encouraging instructors, as well as inspirational people to share their knowledge and stories, therefore creating a hub of everything anyone might need to help break down those barriers. The varied timetable and relaxed fitness approach means you will always find a class to suit your mood. You can come along for just the day or the full weekend, you can join the campers or glampers and stay over or you can go home after a fun packed adrenaline fuelled day. There really is something for everyone so don’t miss this fabulous weekend. www.hertsfitfest.com

ith more than 35 years experience between them, Nicole Myers and Tracie Miller have been working in the beauty industry since leaving college and decided to set up Forever four years ago, to specialise in laser hair removal. ‘We both had courses of laser treatment done personally and were so impressed with the results that we knew we had to get into this exciting area.’ Based at Churchill House in Mill Hill, Forever do things differently. ‘We are not on the high street so we offer far more private and personal experience. Our clients only see one of us, we don’t pass anyone on to another therapist, so we can be 100% certain of maintaining the best possible advice and treatment we can.’ Laser hair removal really is a life changer, imagine never having to wax again! Forever offer pay as you go treatments, so you don’t have to make a heavy initial outlay and treatments start from as little as £20 an area. Recently, Forever have expanded into skin care becoming an approved stockist and treatment centre for Medik8, one of the hottest brands at the moment and are also selling Revitalash, the award

A Plea for Less Formal Lawns Instead, have Wildlife Areas that can enhance, not detract, from a Garden’s Beauty
O
bsessive tidiness in gardens dissipated to a degree historically through the landscape movement and more recently e.g. prairie gardens. However there seems an embedded resistance to releasing control to nature, this is highlighted by the often obsessive tidiness that sadly prevails. This has a multitude of negative consequences to soil through removing all leaves from borders taking cover for a multitude of invertebrate life fundamental to soils long term health and a source of invertebrates’ for birds. Cutting down herbaceous perennials in the autumn rather than leaving them up through the winter is counterproductive, leaving them up enables birds to predate on seeds and insects and when there is haw frost adds to the winter scene and protects the base of herbaceous plants from bad weather. It gives cover for amphibians like frogs and toads who in turn help control of slugs. Formal lawns are largely void of much life so by minimising your formal lawns and allocating the areas away from the
“Cutting down herbaceous perennials in the autumn rather than leaving them up through the winter is counterproductive” house for a wildflower meadow or prairie garden can both enhance the aesthetics of your garden with the changing seasons and be beneficial to an array of creatures which will in turn enhance the interest in the garden. Combinations of shrubs that are allowed to retain their natural character, shape and form rather than be clipped or overly pruned will enable flowering, fruiting and seeding and draw in a multitude of wildlife these combined with herbaceous perennials and hardy annuals will develop tiers of plant interest flower, foliage, shape and form and give important cover to wildlife. A garden is for enjoyment but that enjoyment need not preclude other life from benefitting from your garden too. Your enjoyment I would argue is enhanced by its presence not its preclusion. Wild plants, animals, and insects etc are under severe attack by our often ignorant, arrogant and misguided approach to caring for the earth. We are in severe danger of losing alote of it, our economic systems and consumerism that is largely linear needs to change and quickly to one based on Full Systems Thinking. www.kevinpressland.com 84 MARCH 2019

With the current appeal of open plan living areas, the designers at Poggenpohl St Albans studio can offer advice on the most attractive and practical kitchen for your home and lifestyle and help transition that kitchen into the living space with matching units that house home entertainment equipment or a freestanding bar to take your kitchen from day time practical to evening entertainment. +VENOVO is a new, extraordinary product that now definitively eliminates the boundary between kitchen and living. +VENOVO gives the people

Not only diverse, creative living variations emerge in combination with freestanding +VENOVO high and/or sideboards, even more: as a result, (experience) spaces are newly created and defined by the customers themselves. Robert Bell, studio manager Comments ‘When our colleagues in Hereford release a new range of furniture you know to expect something special. +Venovo did not disappoint, with furniture sitting on chrome legs; the strength of the frame almost defying logic. Get Spring Clean With Statement Storage
T
here’s an old adage that always seems to circulate at this time of year. And whether it was a housewife or Zen philosopher who coined it first, there’s no denying the truth of the matter. A tidy house is a tidy mind and in 2019, we’re leaving the clutter behind. Before you start eye rolling at the spring clean cliché, we’d ask you to hear us out for a moment. While one of our pet peeves will always be clutter, contemporary storage is about more than just hiding things away. Done right, it can add architectural intrigue to lacklustre spaces. Let us show you how…
Make A Perfect First Impression They say you never get a second chance at a first impression. With these striking hall accessories you won’t need one. From Ligne Roset’s Clara Coat Rack to Porada’s floating Bayus Drawers, each of these functional designs does a lot with a little. So no matter how big your hallway, you can afford to introduce a little style this season.
Use Modern Bookcases as Room Dividers For many interior designers, a modern bookcase presents the opportunity to introduce clean lines into open space. In doing so, you partition the room, gifting privacy while doubling the number of ambients in which to relax. Some of our favourite examples in recent years include B&B Italia’s Jack and Cappellini’s Cloud Bookcase. The former
adds a Crittal-style window effect while the latter a whimsical sense of escapism. Fancy something more minimal? Molteni & C’s Graduate Wall System should do the trick.
Make A Design Statement With A Modern Sideboard Contemporary sideboards are the design equivalent of a stunning soundtrack. While usually regulated to a supporting role, the right one can easily become a focal point. If it’s glamour you’re after, then you’ll want to pay attention to Cattelan Italia’s stylish ceramic sideboards. For the best in glass it’s Fiam, while beautiful wood sideboards will always take pride of place at Porada. Whichever you choose, each packs a serious style punch, while keeping track of your most precious china.
Discover Off The Wall Style If you missed out on David Hockney’s record-breaking auction, fear not, there’s another way to deck your walls this season. Modular wall units are one of our favourite methods for transforming empty walls into stunning works of art. Ranging in size and price from Cassina’s thermoplastic Baleno shelves through to Laurameroni’s glamorous 40/40 system, they’re a practical luxury that adds interest to any space.
Get Acquainted With Our Hosting Heros Our stylish bar accessories are designed to be your partner in crime when it comes to hosting family and friends. From innovative wine racks through to all-singing-and-dancing bar cabinets, they’re your go-to for good times in 2019. Feeling spoilt for choice? Lightweights will love Gallotti & Radice’s Riki Bar Trolley while the more seasoned boozers will take great pleasure in Maxalto’s Alcor Drinks Cabinet.
Bottoms up! There are many reasons our clients choose to visit us in store. As a one-stop-shop for some of Europe’s leading furniture and lighting brands, we offer a unique opportunity to see some of the world’s most exciting designs up-close. It’s also the base for our friendly design team, so if you need a little help planning your living space, why not pop by or make an appointment? f your rooms are look as though they’re suffering a bit of a winter hangover, take heart, as there are plenty of bright, new decor trends on the horizon to welcome spring. You don’t need to rush out and arrange a major revamp - some little touches can be enough to lift a space and provide that all-important refresh. Here are six decor trends that will make a big impression on rooms this year, and could help banish the blues and take your home from drab to fab in no time...
Tell a texture story If you want to give a scheme some ‘wow’ factor, look no further than texture. Layering a mixture of soft fabrics - from fluffy sheepskin cushions and chunky wool throws to cowhide rugs - will not only draw the eye, which is essential in a muted scheme decorated in neutrals that could otherwise look bland, but also add cosiness. Adding texture is all about layering, so have a few key pieces, like a statement rug, a velvet chair, or a leather sofa, and then add smaller accessories and soft furnishings until the room feels complete. Don’t forget that your scheme need never be ‘set in stone’. Moving or replacing a few texture-rich accessories is an easy way to re-energise and refresh the whole balance of a scheme.
Make it mellow yellow Yellow has crossed over from the fashion catwalks the colour was big news at the 2019 spring/summer shows - and is predicted to make its mark on our
Fringing - think the swishy, flamboyant Charleston dresses of the 1920s - is making a comeback in decor and home styling. You can interpret it elegantly and traditionally, with upholstery fringing on armchairs and sofas, or go for an ethnic, arty vibe with a colourful tribal wall hanging. However you use it, fringing is fabulous.
Touch wood Natural materials, particularly wood, are essential for today’s stylish homes. It’s all about celebrating the beauty of natural materials and craftsmanship think heirlooms and sustainability - and the unique grain of timber. Don’t limit yourself to one piece. The chic take on the trend is to choose furniture made in different tones of wood, from pale ash to ebony, and let is share a space. Leave it raw and unstained to reveal the gorgeous imperfections of the knots and grain.
Let red rule Let the warmest shades on the colour spectrum rust, red and rose - warm your rooms (it’s cheaper than turning up the central heating!). Our newfound boldness with colour means we’re less timid and more prepared to splash on those bright shades these days - but even used sparingly, these shades will make an impact without being too dominating, especially if you lean towards the brown-based terracotta hues. Experiment with bed linen and accessories to test your enthusiasm, or paint a headboard or feature wall if you want to make a statement. Seeing red can be positive!
Mio Scandi Knitted Cushion, £42, Eclect Design
Pay a floral tribute Nature’s finding its way into more and more interiors, and flowers, potted plants and succulents - both real and faux - are an easy way to bring natural appeal to rooms. Displaying bouquets in clear glass vases can have a transformative effect on a space. As a transparent vase displays all of its contents, the possibilities for decorative ideas extend beyond flowers, and you could use them for fruit or collections of beachcomber finds too. Change the atmosphere with blooms - a fresh cut bunch from a garden will enhance a country/rustic effect, while an elaborate display of exotic blooms makes a luxe touch.

The Art of Chinoiserie T
he Asian-influenced decorative style of chinoiserie first flourished in Europe in the 17th century and has gone on to become a staple, striking feature in art and interior design ever since. The name ‘chinoiserie’ itself comes from a French tongue-in-cheek term meaning ‘a little Chinese’ or ‘Chinese-ish’, denoting the fact thatdespite its clear Asian inspiration- chinoiserie did not originate in China but in France, around the time that Europe first began to trade with the Far East. With its whimsical, Orient-inspired depictions and French roots, chinoiserie is a design style which is truly unique. Throughout the Regency period, the homes of royal and aristocratic families of France, Great Britain, Spain and Italy were adorned with mock-Chinese and Japanese artefacts, lavish items of chinoiserie and oriental silk upholstery. Chinoiserie was a significant feature in the designs of the palaces of King Louis XV of France and King George IV of England. Today, flip through an interior design magazine or scroll through social media to admire high-end properties and you’re highly likely to come across elements of chinoiserie. Some recognisable motifs and features include foo dogs, dragons, nature scenes, traditional Chinese architecture and more. of chinoiserie. Each of Brights of Nettlebed’s elaborate pieces of décor requires immense levels of skill and dedication, using techniques which have been perfected over generations – one of the reasons that chinoiserie pieces are so highly sought-after by designers and collectors. To achieve the signature glossy style that chinoiserie is so well known for, craftsmen usually coat the wood with several layers of lacquer. Once the shine has taken effect, further embellishment is created by hand-carving the scenes and imagery on to the wood and inlaying fine details (pictured). Brights of Nettlebed is the UK’s largest and longest established family-owned classical furniture specialist. In addition to a convenient location on the Kings Road, London, the company provides complimentary transport to extensive showroom settings in the village of Nettlebed near Henley-on-Thames, which comprises more than 30 classically-furnished rooms and garden areas. If the enduring appeal of chinoiserie would be an ideal addition to your home, then consider visiting these showrooms to view the many available pieces, such as the chocolate chinoiserie Imbuya and hand-painted side cabinet (pictured above) or the gilt and ebonised burl hall chair with hand-painted chinoiserie decoration. These are just a couple of the many chinoiserie options available at Brights of Nettlebed, all of which would lend themselves beautifully to any traditional, luxurious interior. Weird & Wonderful
Discover orchids that live on trees, look like bees and act as rubbish dumps for ants. words:
Hannah Stephenson
W
e might be familiar with the moth (phalaenopsis) orchid, commonly sold in supermarkets and garden centres, but there are some really strange specimens for adventurous plant lovers to admire. This year’s festival theme at Kew Gardens theme was Colombia, whose South American landscape is as diverse as the flora and fauna that inhabit it, from tropical beaches to snow-capped mountains and everything in between. It’s also home to more orchid species than anywhere else in the world. Botanical horticulturist Elisa Biondi, manager of the Princess of Wales Conservatory at Kew, says: “A lot of orchids look weird, which is what makes them so interesting and appealing to a lot of people.”
Here she offers some weird and wonderful facts about orchids: Some grow downwards Stanhopea, from the rainforests of central and south America, flower out of the bottom of the container from which they grow, so are best grown in wired hanging baskets. “When people started to cultivate this plant, they thought it simply wasn’t flowering,
but when they tried to repot it, they found out that the flower was inside the pot. The flower spikes grow downwards, so we plant our stanhopeas in hanging baskets, where eventually they find their way out,” says Biondi.
Many grow on tree trunks Epiphytic orchids grow on tree trunks and branches in the rainforest. “The seeds arrive there and then grow and grow towards the light. If the orchid becomes too big for the host tree, it will collapse,” says Biondi.
Some end up a rubbish dump for ants Ants often gather inside the pseudobulb of the Myrmecophila orchids, where the leaves emerge, and deposit debris. Several species of ants do this, leaving behind other dead ants and bits of plant material. “In the canopies of the rainforest, there’s no access to a lot of nutrients a lot of the time,” notes Biondi. “Having this damp material can help the plant, which can get nutrients from it.”
Others attract hummingbirds “The Cattleya trianae is the National flower of Colombia, known for attracting hummingbirds. The strong pink colour is clearly visible to the birds, which is why they are drawn to it. They are able to collect its nectar with their long beaks and tongues.”
There are huge types “One of the biggest [orchids] we have is the Grammatophyllum speciosum, which is gigantic,” says Biondi. “The leaves can span 1m, almost like a cane with a lot of leaves attached to it, like a feature. It can also measure 2m across. The plants can grow up to 1.5m and the flowers are about 5-10cm, growing into a flower spike, in yellow with brown speckles, a bit like a leopard. They would grow in a very humid forest and the majority grow on trees. We have one in the Palm House growing on a ficus.”
They can fool bees “The bee orchid looks like a bee. If you were a bee, you would think the flower was a bee. A poor male bee will be attracted by the orchid flower and try to mate,” explains Biondi. “While he’s there, the pollen gets stuck on him and then he realises his mistake, but will then fly to another ‘bee’ flower on the same plant to have another go. It’s a tough life for a male bee.” 104 MARCH 2019

Spring Clean Your Home
with the Konmari Method
T
he launch of the Netflix show ‘Tidying Up with Marie Kondo’ has brought much-needed inspiration on how to declutter and organise the home - namely with the popular Konmari method. Based on advice from the show’s star, Marie Kondo, Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice shares tips and tricks on how to spark joy in the most relaxing room of the house the bedroom.
Tackle clutter by category Created by Marie Kondo, the KonMari method breaks clutter into five categories - clothing, books, documents, miscellaneous and sentimental items. Putting everything into one big pile makes it easier to get organised, as it allows people to see how much they really have. “Tackling clutter based on the KonMari method helps to maintain order and prevents having to purge again,” Rebecca advises. “This also helps on a psychological level, as it reminds us to think about what we need to buy instead of fixating on what we want.”
Keep objects that spark joy Practicing gratitude is an important part of Kondo’s ethos and that comes through in how she suggests working through each category. Her approach is to pick each item up to see if it sparks joy - if it does, keep it, and if not, it’s time to let it go. “So to know if something sparks joy, hold it in both hands and see how the body responds. You will feel a certain thrill if something sparks joy, and a sense of heaviness if it doesn’t. This is a chance to ‘thank’ an item for its service before moving on, and highlights how to tackle clutter in an organised and cheerful way.”
Using the ‘Fold and stand’ method Finding a home for items that have made the cut 106 MARCH 2019
can be tricky so it is important to keep things in order and easy to identify. Kondo’s method of folding clothing in thirds and then standing them up, takes up less space, so it works equally well in wardrobes as well as smaller spaces such as bedside tables and chests of drawers. “This method may take some getting used to, but makes it simple to visually keep track of the clothes you have. On top of that, if you wanted to colour code your wardrobe, the uniform look and size of each item means that turning your wardrobe into an Instagram-friendly dream is easily achievable,” Rebecca explains. “The ‘fold and stand’ method is also perfect for beds with built-in storage - a part of the room that can be easily overlooked. Ottoman beds have ample room for essentials like bedding and towels, and attached drawers that will benefit from this KonMari trick. This can help to create a sense of peace whenever a drawer or cabinet is opened to reveal a tidy and organised space.”
Make use of small boxes Using small boxes for clothing and other essentials is a particularly useful storage tip for the bedroom. The compact size of the boxes easily fit into drawers and wardrobes and are perfect for clothing or miscellaneous items. This is especially useful for stray items that tend to go missing easily - rings, watches, glasses - and makes getting ready in a hurry a lot easier. “A good thing to use here might be old gift or shoe boxes - they’re often a great size, and upcycling them is a wonderful way to make use of something that might otherwise be discarded ,” Rebecca says. “It also allows people to get creative, giving them a chance to DIY the boxes to match the decor or complement their aesthetic. This can be another way to spark joy - bringing together elements of decorating and tidying.”And bonus: it’s also easier to clean and move things around while still keeping everything tidy.”
“Putting everything into one big pile makes it easier to get organised, as it allows people to see how much they really have”

Make your bedroom
a spring sanctuary
WORDS: Gabrielle Fagan
Y
ou are missing a trick if you’re only using your bedroom for snoozing and loving, as this space should be a stylish sanctuary where it’s easy to relax and
unwind. After a long day, you should be able to retreat to a place of tranquility and calm in order to relax and catch up on some precious sleep. Design and decor can play a huge role in making sure your bedroom is the oasis it should be. There’s a lot of talk about getting the ‘wow’ factor for rooms, but in bedrooms you’re really seeking the ‘aaah’ factor’. You should immediately feel your shoulders drop as you shed tension and realise that this is where you can truly be yourself and unwind. When decorating your bedroom, simplicity is the key to serenity. So no matter what your particular style is, all you need to do to create a sumptuous oasis is heed a few basic but important design ideas. If you’re having trouble sleeping, it might be because of the paint colour in your room. Colours that are too bright or bold can actually keep you 108 MARCH 2019
awake. Light colours are great for making a room feel larger, but a darker hue envelops the bedroom, creating the perfect space to relax and slumber. If you need to have something bold, painting a feature wall behind your head may give you the punch you’re looking for without interrupting your sleep. The bed is obviously the focal point, but at the end of the day, it’s the finishing touches that will turn a bedroom into the ultimate personal comfort zone. Whether your bedroom is covered in carpet or hardwood, rugs are a great way to add colour, texture and of course, warmth underfoot. Try layering rugs in different shapes and patterns for an extra-comfy look. You need to clear any clutter, allow space for you to breathe! The only items that should be in your bedroom are the items you love and care to look at every morning and evening, like family photographs. If you are trying to make your bedroom as cosy as possible, bright overhead lighting will not help. Instead, opt for sleek bedside lighting whether that be a wall mounted sconce or a simple lamp. It has to be bright enough to allow for reading in bed, but not overwhelming or (gasp!) fluorescent. Anything with a dimmer is ideal. Scent your room with essential oils. In aromatherapy, a number of scents are recognised for reducing stress. Relaxing scents include bergamot, chamomile, lavender, lemon, marjoram, neroli, orange, sandalwood, valerian and ylang-ylang. Your bedroom should be a place of rest and relaxation. You should look forward to retreating there at the end of the day. Making some simple decor changes can help transform this important space into the peaceful sanctuary you deserve!
“You need to clear any clutter, allow space for you to breathe!”

The Connaught launches exclusive Moynat Bijoux Box T
Curated by vintage jeweler Susan Caplan
he Connaught at the heart of London’s most exciting avant-garde retail district on Mount Street has joined forces with fashionable neighbour Moynat and vintage jeweller Susan Caplan to launch the Bijoux Box. The beautifully handcrafted Moynat trunk features exclusive vintage jewellery pieces as a gleaming tribute to another era, be it the pendulum designs of the Swinging Sixties, the gold rush of the Seventies or the out-and-out bling of the Eighties for guests staying in The Mews to borrow during their stay free of charge. Should guests be reluctant to part with their choices, the pieces are also available for purchase. Susan Caplan has an instinctive eye for unique jewellery pieces and travels the world in search of true treasures. Susan has personally selected some of the rarest finds from designer heavy-weights and mavericks such as Givenchy, Christian Dior and Chanel for The Connaught. Susan Caplan says: “I am very pleased to be part of this special project between Moynat, The Connaught. Both brands are steeped in history and to be able to make that history accessible to guests with unique pieces of jewellery is an exciting moment to be involved in.” Guests of The Mews are able to reserve the Bijoux Box free of charge for an evening, where they are invited to pick their favourite accessories to complete their look and enjoy their night out. The Mews is a private townhouse offering guests the best of both worlds; world class Connaught hospitality along with keys to their own front door. This one of a kind residence with its own entrance on Adam’s Row, is designed by influential
