St Albans Half

Marathon

returns for a 35th year! on board and have switched some of our suppliers to local companies too”.

So what makes St Albans Half Marathon different?

W

12 june 2016

ith so many Half Marathon events available in the UK, it can be tough to work out which one is for you. We’ve been catching up with St Albans Half Marathon to find out what’s different about their event, and why they think that smaller, local events are the way forward. Now in its 35th year, the St Albans Half Marathon, Hertfordshire saw over 6500 runners take to the stunning streets of St Albans last year. They pride themselves on their community focus, winning the 2015 UK Active Flame Award in recognition of this. As well as the standard Half Marathon and Wheelchair Half Marathon, St Albans Half are one of the only events to offer a Walking Half Marathon, allowing budding athletes to take on the distance at their own pace. Not stopping there, St Albans Half squeeze in a 5k and 1.5k Fun Run too, allowing children to enter both of these races. Why so many races, you ask? Katie Foweraker, Race Director of St Albans Half, commented “We are, and always have been, a community event. We want to encourage whole families in St Albans to get active, as well as individuals. By offering a range of races, we hope that there is something for everyone”. And they don’t stop there. The Runner’s Village has all the essentials – free massage and health MOT, cool down tent, and local food stalls. But they are also introducing a new Children’s Zone which will be offering sports, inflatables, face painting, crafts and much more. “We’re working hard to grow the event this year.” Says Katie. “As well as expanding the Runners Village, we’ve also introduced a Corporate Challenge and improved our VIP Area. We’ve got loads of new sponsors and partners 3 4 M AY 2 0 1 6

We think the St Albans Half Marathon is a standard distance, but far from a standard race. First of all, it is a notfor-profit event, meaning that every penny of profit is donated to local charities and voluntary organisations. This year, the main benefitting charity will be The Hospice of St Francis, as voted by the local community. Donations will also be made to all charities and voluntary organisations who help with marshalling on the day, meaning that your registration fee won’t only help you to reach your new PB, but will help local charities too! Last year over £25,000 was raised! Aside from the generous donations, there’s something different about the atmosphere at the St Albans Half Marathon. There are races for all ages and abilities, so there’s such a mixture of people in the Runners Village. Its great to see whole families there for a day out, with some of the adults running the full Half Marathon or 5K, and the kids taking on the Fun Run. Oh, did we mention that you get a free ice lolly at the finish line? So whether you’re looking for a new challenge, to beat your personal best, raise money for charity, or just get the whole family active, why not sign up to one of the St Albans Half Marathon races! t D. Copperfield, we have an ever-growing number of brands and styles represented in store…but one category that it’s easy to overlook is footwear; despite the fact that the right pair of shoes can be essential to completing your look, whether casual, business or formal. And when you start to delve deeper, the level of skill that goes into making a good pair of shoes is astonishing. We have travelled many places around the world sourcing the brands we stock in store, and we’re proud to say that footwear is something that is best produced in Britain. We have two great shoe manufacturers in store, both of which have years of history in the cobbler’s capital of the world, Northamptonshire. Grenson was established in 1866 by William Green and soon became a family run business when his son took over and created William Green and sons, which subsequently evolved into the more modern brand name, Grenson, to reflect the contemporary styles on offer. 150 years after the business was launched, however, Grenson remains a by-word for the very highest quality of shoemaking. To sit alongside Grenson, we have recently introduced Joseph Cheaney, which was also established in the nineteenth century – and were delighted to be invited to their original factory to see the intricacy of how these shoes are still made today. It takes around eight weeks and 200 hand or handtooled operations to make a pair of Cheaney shoes, as they pass from one ‘room ’ (as the various departments are known) to another…from the cutting and stitching of the upper to the manufacture of the welt and sole. The welt is a strip of leather with a groove on its reverse, which is sewn through the upper leather to the insole. This makes the shoe more flexible and easier to remove the welt for repairing, without damaging the upper leather. The cavity inside the rib on the insole is filled with soft cork. This traditional filling material provides underfoot cushioning and allows the impression of the foot to be made in the insole. Reinforcement, known as a “shank”, is also added to this cavity, which provides support to the arch of the foot and prevents distortion of the shoe in wear. The more a “Goodyear Welted” shoe is worn, the more comfortable it feels – as the leather insole adapts to the shape of the wearer’s foot. The final stage of making a pair of Cheaney shoes is 3 8 M AY 2 0 1 6

carried out in the Shoe Room. Many styles feature the specialised technique of hand burnishing. This gives an ‘antiqued’ look to the shoe and is achieved by applying coloured wax to a small mop and working it into specific areas of the leather upper. The friction of the mop on the leather creates the heat that results in this very special effect. It is a highly skilled handcraft, ensuring that every pair is unique. Only then is the finished shoe ready for sale. Visit us in-store, and feel the quality for yourself. hen choosing the wedding reception venue for what will be the most significant and memorable day of your life, each couple must decide what is truly important to them. Is it the venue; somewhere stunning and beautiful that is steeped in history, but offers modern elegance? How about the quality and variety of the catering? This must deliver the “wow” factor for all guests and leave smiles on faces! Or is it the surroundings and location; do you desire somewhere that is well connected and easy to travel to, but provides a sense of isolation, calm and openness that relaxes all of your guests as soon as they arrive? With the goal obviously to tick as many of these boxes as possible (and more), we think that Hadley Wood Golf Club may just be the ideal venue. Subj: How to Get a Facelift Without Surgery I just look so old. The market’s full of youngsters in their 20s, I can’t believe that any interviewer will take me seriously.

Dear Reader, When Susanna came to see me she was stuck in a rut. In her mid-40s, she had been working as a supply teacher for several years. Although she was desperate to apply for more permanent and more senior jobs, she lacked the selfconfidence to do so. Susanna was convinced that the loose skin on her face made her look far older than she really was, and that interviewers would discriminate against her because of her age. While she was desperate for a cosmetic procedure to tighten her skin and restore her looks, she was also very nervous about her pupils and colleagues knowing she’d had work done. It was vital, she said, that any change was as subtle as possible. In the meanwhile, she scoured the industry press for adverts for permanent teaching positions – and applied for none of them. It was around that time that I finished developing my very own non-surgical face-lifting technique, called the R-Lift. It is so revolutionary that, I’m delighted to announce, last month we received a trademark for it! I started thinking about the technique four years ago, when I began seeing lots of people with what I call “the pillow look”. Their cheeks had been filled out in an effort to lift their skin, making them look, to my mind, a bit like hamsters. It was trendy at the time (!), but I knew that it wasn’t right for our patients, who wanted a much more natural look. Over the subsequent 18 months, I worked to develop a procedure that gave the same effect as a facelift, but without patients having to go under the knife; using a minimum number of needles; and at a fraction of the cost. Most importantly, it needed to leave patients looking normal – not fake. With the R-Lift we inject small amounts of dermal fillers into as few as two points on either side of the face. Unlike ordinary fillers, we run a cannula beneath the skin’s surface, to release the fibrous bands that fuse skin to muscle and this fades deep wrinkles. The minimal use of needles means pain is unlikely - 99% of patients don’t require any anesthetic and bruising is extremely rare. It also meant we could keep the cost down to £900 at the lower end. And the results? The R-Lift refreshes and restores your skin, making you look younger – but still like you. People won’t know you’ve had anything done, they’ll just think you’re looking great. Take Susana. She had the R-Lift about 18 months ago, and hasn’t looked back since. Within weeks, she noticed such a difference that she had the confidence and self-assurance to apply for the jobs she had previously shied away from. That insecure and self-doubting teacher who had approached me months before was given a permanent teaching job soon after. When I heard from her recently, she had been given additional responsibilities. This procedure is only available here at Riverbanks. If you’d like to find out more, please hit ‘reply’. We’re really excited about the new trademark, and would love to tell you more about how it can help you look fabulous, too. Warm regards,

Ravi

s seen on Rihanna and model of the moment Gigi Hadid, the monochromatic look involves using one colour on the eyes, lips and cheeks, creating a beautifully ‘pulled together’ look. “It’s foolproof when you are super-busy and unable to do a full face of make-up,” says Ruby Hammer, MBE, international make-up artist and make-up salon creative director for Urban Retreat at Harrods. “Plus, it takes the guess work out of co-ordinating your look!” But it’s important to choose the best colour for you, of course. Here’s the expert advice on four shades that will have you catching monomania in no time...

THE BRONZE AGE

Tying in with this fashion’s current Nineties obsession, brown shades are best “if you have a medium to dark skin tone, and either blue or green/hazel eyes”, according to Carla Wall, head make-up artist for Hourglass. “But always go for warmer tones; think bronze, golden and deep copper shades, as anything cooler can wash out the skin. “On the eyes, use a palette that has a combination of satin, shimmer and matte colours. If you want to make the eyes 5 6 may 2 0 1 6

No7 Lift & Luminate Triple Action Serum, £27 (Boots), is clinically proven not only to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but also make skin feel firmer - thanks to hibiscus extract - and even skin tone. Ideal for women aged 40-plus, the serum should be used twice a day under your day and night cream.

more feline, use a darker tone on the outer corners in a V shape, and a lighter colour in the tear duct. “Cheeks and skin should be enhanced with a bronzer, and if you have intensified the eyes, lips should be kept minimal and glossy. “Hourglass Extreme Sheer Lip Gloss in Imagine and Ignite are a perfect complement for this. If you have kept the eyes neutral, then go for a stronger brown-toned lipstick, a la Rihanna.” Hourglass Modernist Eyeshadow Palette in Infinity, £56 (www.spacenk.com); Hourglass Creme-to-powder Bronze Duo Light, £40 (www.spacenk.com); MAC Eye Shadow in Texture, £13 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk); Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Colour in Laura Mercier Creme Dulce De Leche, £22 Smooth Lip Colour in Dulce De Leche, (www.johnlewis.com) available from John Lewis

Tried & tested Katie Wright experiences bath time magic, with Lush’s new spa treatment

“I

begin my treatment, which is inspired by the healing waters of Bath, seated in a candlelit room in Lush’s country cottage-style spa. Wrapped in a wonderfully fluffy robe, I’m treated to a head, neck and shoulder massage, then my therapist leaves the room and I climb into a deep, warm bath that’s already been drawn. A super-sized bathbomb fizzes away and I hear the legend of Prince Bladud (believed to have discovered said waters). Prompted at the end of the story, I get out of the bath, dry off and lie down on my side under a sheet on the massage table, snuggled up to a long cushion. My therapist returns to give me a thorough (but thoroughly relaxing) ‘sideline’ massage, soundtracked by speciallycomposed music (more rousing than your usual spa pan pipes). The whole experience is utterly blissful. If you struggle to find the time to bathe at home, this is a fabulous 75-minute indulgence that will leave you feeling calm and delightfully sleepy.” Lush Tales of Bath, £110, is available in all Lush Spas, in eight locations across the UK (www.lush.com)

IN THE PINK

“A fair-skinned complexion, blonde with blue eyes, traditionally suits a pink look. However, depending on the shade, you can make it right for any skin tone,” says Hammer. “For darker skin tones, you would need to move away from a pale pink and opt for something that’s vibrant and has a real kick. “Pick a soft colour for your cheeks and eyes, something very feminine - almost peachy - and then up the colour on your lips for maximum impact.” And lookout for multi-purpose cream products that you can double up with: “Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge comes in many shades and is fabulous as dual purpose. I also love Laura Mercier’s Creme Cheek Colour, as it’s long-lasting and allows you to build on coverage for a soft, velvety finish.” Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks in Raspberry, £19.50 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk); Laura Mercier Creme Cheek Colour in Blaze, £21.50 (www.urbanretreat.co.uk)

CORAL RIFF

Orange shades, particularly soft coral, are really flattering on paler complexions. “I would use these tones on someone who has a fair to medium skin tone. The warm, brighter tones complement deep brown eyes beautifully,” advises Wall. “Keep eyes minimal, and focus on cheeks and lips. Use a sheer wash of colour on the eyes that you can double up as a blush. “Using a lipstick as a blush is also fun. Pat it gently on the lips for a more sheer stain effect, and use your fingertips to apply a small amount on the cheeks, to give a nice flushed effect.” Hourglass Opaque Rouge Lipstick in Riviera, £23 (www.spacenk.com); Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss in Folly, £26 (www.urbanretreat.co.uk)

THE GOLD STANDARD

Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss in Folly, available from Urban Retreat

Foil-like gold lips were seen on the Prada spring catwalk, but for a mono metallic, look you want a warm, subtle shimmer all over. “People with olive, bronzed and darkertoned skins, who are brunette with brown eyes, match perfectly with a gold glistening finish,” says Hammer. “A clear lip gloss with gold in it is the best way to take this look from catwalk to everyday wear, and you can use a hint on your cheeks, and a hint on the inner corners of your eyes or brow bones, too. I love this look for summer or on a night out. “Gold powder products can double up well on eyes and cheeks, while cream products are ideal for cheeks and lips - you may just need to add a balm over the top to keep lips moist and glossy.” RMS Lip2Cheek, £30 (www.urbanretreat.co.uk); Surratt Artistique Eyeshadow in Cuivre, £16 (www.urbanretreat.co.uk). Spotlight on…

Mr Paul Whittingham-Jones, Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon Paul Whittingham-Jones is a dedicated hip and knee specialist at Spire Harpenden Hospital. Here he answers some common questions about hip and knee replacements, two of the most common operations he performs What do you do within your practice?

I am an orthopaedic surgeon and I specialise in hip and knee surgery as well as sports injuries. I really enjoy making a difference in the quality of life of my patients, getting them back to their normal lives as quickly as possible. I also perform Hip Arthroscopy and sports knee surgery, including knee arthroscopy and cruciate ligament reconstruction.

What questions do you get asked most often?

A lot of patients ask ‘Will I suffer less pain and be able to get back to the things I want to do?’ and ‘Can I get back the same quality of life I had before?’ When I see my patients in their post-surgery follow-up appointment they often tell me that they wish they had had their operation sooner. Some patients have been able to return to hobbies, which have been put on hold for months or years due to pain caused by arthritis. I see enormous changes in my patients after they’ve had their operations; not only in their physical ability but also their mental outlook, which is often completely changed as they’re in less pain and have a much better quality of life. Some patients are worried about the operation itself and will ask about that. There have been major advances in surgery and anaesthesia over recent decades which have reduced the amount of time patients are in hospital following a joint replacement. My patients generally stay for three to four nights, and the surroundings for recovery at Spire Harpenden are excellent. The nursing care at Spire Harpenden is outstanding, the rooms are well appointed and many have views out over the bluebell woods and surrounding fields.

Will I be able to move around at home after the operation?

The vast majority of my patients are able to walk out of hospital three to four days after their operation. Each patient receives physiotherapy while still in hospital, which aids a very quick recovery. Following safe discharge, further physiotherapy including hydrotherapy in the pool ensures the best longer-term outcome. This can set apart the results which patients achieve elsewhere in my opinion.

What’s the biggest myth about hip or knee replacement surgery?

I still hear people say that only those over a certain age can have a hip replacement because the joint will wear out. Actually modern replacements may last for 20 years or more. I really would avoid placing a lower limit on age – it’s entirely down to what patients need and what their expectations may

6 0 may 2 0 1 6

be. It is also true to say that revision surgery (re-do surgery to replace existing joint replacements) is less damaging than previously and also offers better results than ever before.

How long will it take to get booked in for my operation?

I hold out-patient clinics at Spire Harpenden on Mondays and Thursdays every week, so I am able to ensure that I see my patients very quickly. My patients can be operated on within two to three weeks of their initial consultation with me, or whatever suits them, as many patients will want to arrange their operation around busy lives.

Can I see you if I don’t have insurance?

Absolutely. Spire Harpenden can build self-funding packages for all available treatments including hip and knee replacements. Their Inclusive Care prices cover all aspects of your care including the operation, hospital stay, surgeon and anaesthetist’s fees, physiotherapy and any other costs relating to your surgery after your initial appointment. The team at Spire Harpenden personalise the package to your individual requirements, providing a smooth, simple and excellent service.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

I follow Liverpool FC through thick and thin and have done since I was a boy. I do a lot of cycling and did the Ride London 100 (a 100 mile cycle ride) last year, raising money for a Blood Cancer charity, and am doing the same this year. At the weekends you’ll find me on a bike ride with my young family in the Chilterns. Holmes Mark Harwood

Mark’s career started as an architect. This solid base gave him the knowledge and foundation to apply to design within the bespoke joinery market. Mark has spent most of the years in the kitchen design industry. The pinnacle of his career was managing for Clive Christian Furniture the flagship store in Knightsbridge, London, during which time he designed and executed beautiful living concepts for a discerning clientele. Mark uses this wealth of expertise and experience in the luxury brand market to create a new concept business closer to home and achieve quality bespoke interiors not confined by the regimented structure that larger joinery companies can only offer. Working with the previous Clive Christian workshop, based in UK, Mark is producing unique design concepts for each and every project.

Beverley Spyer Holmes

Hertfordshire based interior designer Beverley Spyer Holmes has dominated the interiors industry for over 20 years concentrating her wealth of knowledge and expertise in the high end residential market. Beverley’s interiors reflect her clients aspirations and practical needs whilst creating spaces that are utterly beautiful. Having graduated from The Inchbald School of Design her career has taken her through all aspects of interior work both residential and commercial. Harwood Holmes design and produce stunning bespoke hand painted kitchens and joinery for every room in the home including bedrooms, bathrooms, media rooms and living rooms. We have developed our range to create a high standard, luxury product. place in the showroom. From there, we develop ideas, layouts and finishes before presenting hand drawn plans to the client. Harwood Holmes is on hand throughout the process to liaise with fitters, manufacturers and decorators to create your beautiful handmade kitchen. With years of experience behind them, Mark and Beverley are an excellent choice to have managing your project. The latest in German technology from Moneyhill Interiors by Celia Warbrick

E

ach year, all the major German kitchen manufacturers open their Factories and showcase their latest designs inhouse in various different locations. Whilst all the manufacturers are dependent on various manufacturing factors such as new veneers, and carcase materials, they are also desperate for the latest in technology for such boring components as hinges and soft close mechanisms that we just take for granted now. I simply love the new designs from Pronorm, combining the lacquers and laminates in subtle colours (that you never grown tired of) with stunning oak and white glass units. The use of pocket doors whilst not a new invention have become very sophisticated and glide with ease and the new interiors from Pronorm show just how easy it is to be totally organised in the kitchen. The versaltity of designing with a German range is also reflected in the price. It is possible to achieve the same design look and indeed colour using a door finished in a coloured laminate for a fraction of the price when using a high gloss lacquer. Concrete laminate doors for example are also proving that you can have texture and colour without blowing the budget. Although the kitchen has always been at the centre of family life, it has now also become the dining room, study and TV area all into one. The fact that all the food storage, prepping and cooking also takes place means that design needs to be simply tailored to individual needs. A couple with no children or animals have very different needs to a family with children. Its really lovely that so much can be stored away such as coffee machines, toasters and blenders,

leaving clutter free worktops. It is also possible to hide away Ovens, Steam Ovens and Microwaves with specially designed cupboards that bleep if machines are left on and the doors closed.

Herts Bifold Doors… The

big Q & A

We understand buying bifold doors can be a minefield but we are here to help however we can, so the team at Herts bifold doors have got together to take the chance to share with you some of our frequently asked questions.

I

f you have any other questions you would like to know, or have any which you think anybody else would like to know the answer to please contact us and we will post the answers on our website blog and Facebook page.

Why choose bifold doors for your project?

There are a number of reasons for choosing bifold doors, opening up your home, the fantastic views of your garden and large expanses of light. On average a bifold door can provide your opening with around 90% glass, imagine an opening 3m wide and 2.7m high that could be predominantly glass, there are no other common types of domestic door that can offer or come close to this specification. Bifold doors are great for openings over 2.5m wide where conventional French doors or patio doors become an unlikely option for the opening. If you do have a smaller opening and are thinking about French doors our sister company G&N Windows can help you with all of your requirements.

What is the best material?

Over the past few years bifold doors have undertaken quite a facelift, they have gone from non-thermally broken doors used throughout 7 6 may 2 0 1 6

Europe for shop fronts to being the UK’s most sought after home improvement. These cutting edge, thermally broken Aluminium doors from Origin, Schuco and Solarlux have been extremely popular making up 98% of the bifold doors we have sold over the past 5 years.

Here are a few points to take into consideration (don’t let us sway you too much!)

UPVC has a reputation of expanding at a much greater rate than that of Aluminium, this is more likely to happen during the hotter months and ironically this is when you want to use your doors the most! Due to this fact, amongst others we have decided to cease supplying UPVC Bifolds. Timber can also have a tendency to change shape over time as it is a natural product and prone to being affected by adverse or extreme weather conditions, it will also require maintenance throughout its lifetime. There is a larger panel size available with Aluminium doors than UPVC or timber, you can manufacture a single pane in Aluminium up to 1.2m wide (sometimes wider), UPVC is 0.9m and Timber 0.85m. The majority of our customers are driven towards having less panes on their bifold doors to reduce the amount of frame obscuring their view. One more thing to take into consideration is the

lack of strength with UPVC against Aluminium, as UPVC is a weaker product and only lined internally with Aluminium for reinforcing purposes it does have a tendency to sag and warp over time with the weight of the doors. Whereas Aluminium doors are designed to take the weight of the door sashes whilst keeping their shape.

Why the big difference in cost? Unlike products such as French doors our bifold doors are bespoke and made to suit your opening and the needs of your build. Our bifold doors operate on a precision engineered system allowing

smooth operation for the duration of its life, the efficient weather and low maintenance make these doors an unrivalled product and a great addition to your home. As such the cost reflects the quality of the product.

What are U-Values?

The U-Value, as with all bifold doors are bespoke and are affected by a number of variables, size, number of panes, opening configuration and whether the door is opening inwards or outwards. All of our doors exceed current building regulations and come with a severe weather rating certificate. If you have any specific thermal values you would like to meet please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate for these. Dependent on product we are able to achieve U values as low as 0.8!

What are the possible threshold options?

The main desire for our customers is to create a seamless transition from inside to outside without having to step over a chunky frame. What many people do not realise is that in the UK all homes are required to have a weathered threshold to meet building regulations, which leads us to not recommend a flush threshold - no

one wants a door which leaks! With this in mind we offer our customers a standard threshold with our Aluminium bifold doors and have a few tricks up our sleeves to achieve a minimal step. These include adjusting your brickwork to lower the damp proof course and sinking your frame down to allow the internal and external floor levels to meet the threshold depending on your criteria.

What if we would like sliding doors?

For those of you looking for a variety of products or something to rival a bifold door, maybe a large pane sliding door then you need not look any further, Herts Bifold Doors work closely with their parent company G&N Windows to bring you a glazing option for all of your desires. Not only do we also have an extensive range of large pane sliding doors on offer we can do French doors, patio doors, stable doors, windows, roof lights and much, much more!

The new Mumford & Wood Classic™ range sits alongside the well-established, award-winning Conservation™ collection which provides a full suite of high performance double glazed windows and doors that satisfy the demanding performance specification for new build properties. Mumford & Wood Classic windows and doors offer an alternative slim panel glazing system that effectively reduces sight lines. This visual is more in keeping with period aesthetics making the Classic ideal for window replacement and upgrade in heritage projects and those in conservation areas where planning restrictions may apply. These new madeto-order double glazed products are available with a choice of profiles and feature individual 12-14mm slim profile units with true bars and a traditional external putty faced finish. In addition to standard annealed float glass, the opportunity to achieve the authentic natural appearance of hand-blown glass, with reduced reflection, is possible with the option to

choose either Victorian sheet or Crown glass. “We have launched the Mumford & Wood Classic™ range in response to customer demand,” says Frank Buckley, managing director, Mumford & Wood, “as there are many important projects for which our slim pane Classic will meet the aesthetic requirements of conservation and planning officers while at the same time improving the thermal, acoustic and sustainability performance of some of Britain’s most loved buildings.” The high performance Mumford & Wood Classic™ windows feature Krypton gas filled panels that achieve a 1.9 W/m²K overall frame U-value, and a 1.5 W/m²K centre pane U-value, and there is a five-year warranty on the double glazed unit. Mumford & Wood manufacture in England from a state-of-the art facility in Tiptree, Essex. Products including the new Classic™ range are made from FSC certificated Siberian Larch, slow growing and dense, which is engineered for maximum strength and robustness. A perfect factory finished, paintready surface typical of fine joinery is achieved in preparation for three coats of spray applied microporous paint or stain while a dual colour option is proving popular especially in combination with a wide palette of heritage colours. Independent

research identifies that these windows, which are made to the standards of the British Woodworking Federation Wood Window Alliance scheme, have a life cycle expectancy of up to 65 years and more. All products manufactured by Mumford & Wood are supported with the Complete Care Service which involves an annual maintenance check to ensure continuous high operational performance and aesthetics. ack in April 2015, Hazlemere Window Company Ltd celebrated 30 years in business as independent double glazing manufacturers and installers. Another year on and this family owned and run business continues to invest in the latest most thermally efficient products, high tech machinery, expert staff and a long term stable future for all its customers and employees. During Spring 2016 Hazlemere Windows started a major refurbishment of their 8,000 square feet High Wycombe Showroom in Wellington Road, on Cressex Business Park, adjacent to their 38,000 square foot factory. The work is being done in several phases to ensure the Showroom stays open 7 days a week, and inconveniences customers as little as possible. They have already installed as part of this updating of products the latest slimmer

Yet another new product that is on demonstration display within the High Wycombe Showroom is a two section UPVC casement window with a “floating” mullion, enabling both sections to fully open to provide an extra wide opening like French doors, which is sometimes the only way smaller apertures in bedrooms can achieve fire egress that is legally required on replacement windows under the current Building Regulations. Hazlemere have ordered a solid roof conservatory which will be built in the High Wycombe Showroom during 2016, as the level of interest in this product has increased in recent years. Home owners need to be mindful that every solid roof conservatory or orangery falls under Building Regulations which should be obtained prior to commencing construction, as in many cases planning permission for solid roof conservatories is also required. More than 31 years on Hazlemere continues to invest in its future, showrooms (the other being in Welwyn Garden City) and vehicle fleet, which now numbers more than 20 vehicles, the very latest edition being a low emissions Luton delivery van. Hazlemere Window Company Ltd is fortunate to have had such loyal customers over the last 30+ years, but also been able to retain its skilled and experienced workforce, employing its own designers, surveyors, ground workers, fabricators, fitters and service engineers. Rum Point, Cayman Islands

ocated on the north side of the island, in a less developed part of the Grand Cayman called Rum Point drive. Nicolas Tye Architects were appointed to build a new build on the sandy long stretched site between the public road and beach. On the 0.69 acre site now is a contemporary and luxury one off family home built to set a landmark for Rum Point, enhancing both the local area and island in general. Rum Point house was to be ultra contemporary therefore it was important that the building would sit harmonious alongside the surrounding area and within the site next to the sea; the house was designed to give an impression of floating, like a boat at sea. The design also needed to comply to the current regulations and be hurricane, storm surge and efficient in longevity of lifetime materials to the specification to make this a robust and well thought through build. The entrance elevation is solid, closed from views from the public road and with an open entrance area. side walls are angled at 11.5 degrees to create overhangs for design aesthetic and solar shading purposes. the extravagant house has a roof terrace as party deck with a covered bar and lounge area allowing for panoramic views around the island and sea, as well a vanishing edge pool located to back of the building next to the beach. The southeast facing elevation is mainly solid to protect from the sun, but the north-eastern elevation is open to the beach allowing for unspoiled views towards the sea.

In recognition to the impressive design Rum Point has already won two awards: Caribbean Property Awards 2015 Architecture Single Residence Governor’s Award for Design & Construction Excellence in the Cayman Islands 2015 Joint Winner
