Dressing for summer… and the wedding season

T

he clocks have gone forward and the evenings are bright and cheery…that summer feeling is just around the corner. There are many things to think about when dressing correctly for summer, and getting the right clothing for the right occasion is key. Summer, more often then not, brings weddings, which are the ideal occasion to show that little extra something; to move away from the conservative, everyday suits you may wear to work or – if you rarely wear a suit – time to dress up and feel that extra bit special. However, mastering the look is not as easy as simply putting a jacket and trousers on. There are many subtle differences and details that can change the way a suit will fit and feel, including trouser width, jacket length and even the lapel shape and size. And it’s with these details where two true masters of modern contemporary tailoring come to the fore: Paul Smith and Richard James. Tailoring has always been synonymous with England and these two English brands don’t fail to deliver. Both are at the vanguard of the new era of tailors and designers and they are fast becoming the pre-eminent brands of today… which is why we’re so proud to offer them as part of our collection at D.Copperfield.

But it’s not just choosing an excellent brand that makes the suit ‘right’ for you; the most important part to looking good in a suit is the fit. Are your trousers too long? Are your jacket sleeves too short? Even the width of the lapels can make a suit look a million pounds on one person and the worst faux pas on another. Add to this the importance of choosing the best colour to suit you and this starts to feel a daunting task. But for us at D.Copperfield, this is what makes buying a suit so special. It’s not an everyday purchase and it’s something that needs a lot of thought and just as much help to get right. That’s why we’re happy to take the time to guide you through the process painlessly – and we have all the expertise you need on hand to help you make the right decision. We aim to make the experience the best it can be, with knowledgeable staff and capabilities to alter and modify these little changes, making sure that you arrive looking just the way you dreamt. Just be sure not to steal the limelight from the happy couple! hen choosing the wedding reception venue for what will be the most significant and memorable day of your life, each couple must decide what is truly important to them. Is it the venue; somewhere stunning and beautiful that is steeped in history, but offers modern elegance? How about the quality and variety of the catering? This must deliver the “wow” factor for all guests and leave smiles on faces! Or is it the surroundings and location; do you desire somewhere that is well connected and easy to travel to, but provides a sense of isolation, calm and openness that relaxes all of your guests as soon as they arrive? With the goal obviously to tick as many of these boxes as possible (and more), we think that Hadley Wood Golf Club may just be the ideal venue. Set in 265 acres of mature, scenic parkland, the golf course was once a royal hunting ground during the reign of Henry V, but now sits under the watchful gaze of the majestic Georgian Clubhouse built in 1781. Welcoming up to 130 guests, the house is bright, elegant and relaxed, effortlessly combining classic with contemporary but, most importantly, providing an absolutely stunning photographic backdrop for your special day. Looking out from the Clubhouse, guests can admire not only the golf course but also the sweeping views of Hertfordshire’s countryside to the south. Many find it hard to imagine that such an idyllic setting can be found only 30 minutes from Victoria by train and less than 2 minutes from the M25. Try Matt’s recipe for Butter Poached Smoked Trout. RECIPE Butter poached smoked trout with stewed rhubarb, chilli & almonds (serves 2) Matt Tebbutt - East of England Food Festival at Knebworth - April, 2016 “Rhubarb is very versatile and lends itself to both sweet and savoury dishes, depending on how much sugar you cook it in and what flavours you partner it with. Here, it cuts the earthy richness of the trout nicely. If you don’t fancy the butter poaching element, slide it under a grill but this does tend to dry the fish out a little.” 2 fillets of smoked trout 100g salted butter Water to poach A splash of white wine vinegar and white wine 2 slices of lemon 1 bunch of fresh dill, sprigs separated from stalks 4-6 stalks of forced or wild garden rhubarb, chopped into 1inch chunks 200g caster sugar 500ml water 2 rosemary sticks 1 red chilli 2 tblsp whole blanched almonds, roughly chopped Firstly heat the water, sugar chilli and rosemary, bring to a boil. First “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” played to sell-out audiences who were impressed not only by the first-rate performances, but also the highly imaginative set and costume designs, a hallmark of Abbot’s Hill productions. Then the theatre turned itself over to Gym & Dance Displays where girls at both Senior and Junior level could perform a wide range of musical, dance and gymnastic routines, in solo and group performances. Budding engineers at Abbot’s Hill were thrilled to be judged winners of the Intermediate competition during the Dacorum Rotary Technology Tournament at Ashlyn’s School in March. Should Politics be a compulsory subject? words by Jack Travers, Teacher of History & Politics at Aldenham School

Corbyn-mania turned Corbyn-mare, Cameron v Boris, Osborne v IDS… There can’t have been too many more interesting times to be teaching politics than now and that isn’t even including the elections in America and a certain Mr Trump. All of this controversy is spoiling us politicaltragics to such an extent that the current A Level students must think that politics is the most rock’n’roll thing ever. Well, not quite but you get my meaning!

I

t can’t have been as easy to engage the A Level pupils when the coalition was plodding along nicely. There just wasn’t as much to discuss and debate. What’s more likely to catch the attention of a 16 or 17-year-old, a Nick Clegg party conference speech from Bournemouth or the distinct possibility that both leading parties will tear themselves apart from within at the same time as Britain possibly leaving the EU… I am hoping not many chose the former! It is a great time to both be teaching and learning politics as there are exciting stories each and every day. A Level politics is split into British and American modules, one in Year 12 / Lower Sixth and one in Year 13 / Upper Sixth. The syllabus is full and you have to get through all the relevant content, be it about how the political systems are organised or how they work in practice and why. It is a great A Level as it teaches writing skills, analysis, discussion and debating and much more.

US AMBASSADOR TO THE UK, MATTHEW BARZUN

Plus, a key part of teaching the subject is to instil a passion for it in the pupils and that is why the trials and tribulations of both political elites on both sides of the Atlantic is so relevant at the moment. I like to think the Aldenham politics students enjoy the subject and may even talk about it in their free time with friends or family. That can’t be said for every subject. Although this controversy is not good for the stability of either the UK or US, it is brilliant to help us teachers so for that reason, long may it continue! Many Aldenham politics students were lucky enough to hear the US Ambassador to the UK, Matthew Barzun, speak last month at the school. His engagement of those present was superb and was yet another push in the right direction for the pupils. I look forward to hearing more about his career in the future as he is certainly ‘one to watch’. UK parents among

‘the strictest in Europe’

B

ritish parents are among the strictest in Europe after a study has revealed they are more reluctant to let their children play and travel unsupervised. Worried parents in England restrict their child’s ability to play and travel without adult supervision more than their European counterparts, the research found. The study revealed parents are mainly worried about the potential danger from road traffic and going out in the dark and it followed calls from leading teachers to expose children to more genuine risk. Researchers compared children’s independent mobility in 16 countries worldwide based on a survey of over

children to use daylight hours and prevent road deaths. Ben Shaw, Director of Policy Studies Institute, said: “ Allowing children the freedom to get about in their local area unaccompanied by adults has been found to be important for their health and physical, mental and social development. Yet we have found that children around the world have significant restrictions placed on their freedom to get about – to go to school, to visit friends, and get to places to play. “Children’s freedom of movement has declined in recent decades and danger from traffic is the main reason parents give for not letting their children out by themselves.

Researchers compared children’s independent mobility in 16 countries worldwide based on a survey of over 18,000 children 18,000 children aged 7 - 15 from 2010 to 2012. Carried out by the Policy Studies Institute (PSI) at the University of Westminster, it found that children’s ability to travel and play in their local area unsupervised by adults varies widely with England in seventh place compared to more lenient countries like Germany and Finland. The only European countries from the sample that allow children of any age to go out after dark are Finland, Sweden and Denmark, the study funded by the Nuffield Foundation revealed. Separately, England held the seventh place in the ranking, positioning parents as among the less lenient in Europe. The report recommended a reduction of car dependency and a change in Daylight Saving Time to allow

6 APRIL 2016

We are struck by how this significant danger and major restriction on children, is routinely accepted given the health and developmental benefits independent mobility has been shown to result in. “While restrictions on children’s freedom have increased, our research has looked at how this situation can be turned around. “We have found some shining examples of cities such as Rotterdam and Vancouver which have been inspired to place children at the centre of their development; on the basis that if a city works for children it works for everyone. “However, if the benefits of these approaches are to be enjoyed in the UK, the needs of children must be given much greater priority by decision makers working in the policy areas of planning, development and transport.

Catholic school, St Columba’s is open to boys of wide variety of religious traditions, with learning underpinned by the Columban code of Courage, Courtesy and Compassion. While striving for academic excellence the College realises that it is whole-person education that best prepares boys for the world, recognising that moral and spiritual qualities are essential in achieving roundness of character. In addition to the curriculum, there is an extensive Extra and Extended Curriculum ranging from the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Combined Cadet Force to Young Enterprise. These activities develop qualities of self-knowledge, teamwork, leadership and resilience. The College regularly wins trophies for rugby, athletics, basketball and other sports. There is a strong tradition of music, drama and public speaking with regular concerts and drama productions. The school’s strength lies in the combination of high expectations, a culture of mutual respect and care, creating a stimulating happy environment in which boys thrive and learn, building firm foundations for confident socially-skilled pupils. The community is vibrant and the students are the best evidence of what a Columban education can produce. HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SCHOOL PETER HAMILTON, HEADMASTER OF HABERDASHERS’ ASKE’S BOYS’ SCHOOL Making the right choice of school for your child is a daunting prospect. With so many excellent independent secondary schools available, all displaying an impressive pedigree, it is easy to become overwhelmed when choosing the school that will be best for your child in terms of academic fulfilment and personal development. A child’s schooldays, however, are not merely about absorbing knowledge or acquiring grades. Ensuring that the school has the correct type of pastoral support and care for your child is paramount to their success and happiness. For example, how are classes set? Ability setting may be too competitive for some; geographical location ensures classmates are close to each other both inside and outside of school, better encouraging the kind of lifelong friendship that schools inspire. Additionally, how pupils are supported through exams – planning, revision strategies, stress management – and the UCAS process, should form part of your decisionmaking. At age 10 or 11, this may seem early, but it is certainly not premature. Before you know it, you’ll be watching them receive their exam results and waving them off to University.

Now is the time to start planning your visits to open days, researching websites and sending for prospectuses. During the quest, you will face the fact that most independent schools have small class sizes, exceptional exam results, motivated staff, an extensive range of extracurricular activities, a cabinet full of trophies, and more! So, how do you best make an informed decision? Primarily, choosing a school is about choosing an academic ethos that will enable your child to succeed, not just in their exams, but in their lives after education. Most schools supply an information book alongside their prospectus and this should explain the how each curricular subject is taught and what exactly is on offer. Some schools expect pupils to drive their own learning; others may have a more creative, or project focused, approach. Some schools will offer little or no flexibility when selecting examination subjects; others may afford students a variety of choices. Knowing your child’s areas of strength, you should be looking to choose an approach that will engage them and encourage them to their life. 580 AAPlearn PRRI ILL2 0throughout 21061 6

In the case of Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School, we admit the brightest boys, and at every stage of their development our curriculum is expressly designed to keep them involved, stimulated and eager to learn. We are known for our academic excellence and the vast majority of our students go on to their first choice university, with exceptionally high numbers to Oxford and Cambridge. We produce confident and self-motivated young men who are fully prepared for the challenges of the future. We have a strong and supportive multicultural community at our core. Stud ents make friends across the most extraordinary range of backgrounds and cultures, and our community stands as a beacon of tolerance and respect. Your research will help you to target a small number of prospective schools that should share the values and aspirations that you have for your child, ensuring you are able to make the right choice when the time comes.

‘Private schools should be praised for producing influential people’

C

A study by Debrett’s, the etiquette experts, reveals that two-fifths of the 500 most powerful and influential people in Britain went to private schools

rucially this cuts across all spheres of influence, including not only traditional careers, like business and politics, but areas like architecture and acting too: witness the amazing global success of Eton-educated Eddie Redmayne, still only 33, as Professor Stephen Hawking, in The Theory of Everything. Of course private schools are always going to produce far more than their fair share of Society’s most powerful “players”. This is inevitable, given the fact that most successful people educate their own children privately; thus the system is guaranteed to be perpetuated, with success breeding success. For example, high-flying parents will have all the key contacts, whether in commerce or theatre, to help ensure their own offspring have that first, vital helping hand up the career ladder. Work experience slots inevitably go to the children of top business people or lawyers, for example as inevitably their parents have the contacts to find precious openings. And anyone who has been to a private school, whether big or small, famous or not so famous, will know that there will be many such high-achieving parents. Their added

10 APRIL 2016

influence opens doors more easily and, crucially, other pupils can also benefit from their contacts. For example, successful parents are often instrumental in prompting high-profile acquaintances to visit schools as speakers: spending time with pupils and offering invaluable advice on “How to succeed” in the process. That way, everyone benefits from their expertise. This is indeed how the system works on a termly basis: little nudges here and there, but nothing too blatant or nepotistic. Private schools are exceedingly good at producing successful pupils…

ONCOPOLE: A new kind of French trip

WORDS BY FREDERIC VIGNAL, HEAD OF FRENCH, MERCHANT TAYLORS' SCHOOL

For years, school language trips have involved remarkably similar activities; language lessons in the morning and afternoon activities in the local area sum up the vast majority of such excursions. And rightly so, since there needs to be both a core language component as well as the opportunity for broader cultural appreciation.

S

chools now, though, are under pressure to deliver a more rewarding experience, hence why Merchant Taylors' has begun to expand the range and quality of its trips abroad. In Modern Languages, this started with a memorable Spanish trip to Cuba a few years ago. Geography trips to China and a Duke of Edinburgh's Award trip to Nepal have continued the trend and now the French department has organised a stunning opportunity for our linguists at the Oncopole, home of the Institut Universitaire du Cancer de Toulouse (IUCT), one of Europe's

top centres for cancer treatment and research. This is the product of a collaboration between a cancer centre (the Claudius Régaud Institute) and the oncology departments of Toulouse University Hospital in order to offer a complete and integrated range of treatments. This brings together teams involved in fundamental research, clinical research and applied research, specialising in all types and stages of cancer. As experts in complex cases and rare tumours, treatment combines cutting-edge medicine and a heavy emphasis on interpersonal relations. The IUCT Oncopole favours a holistic approach to illness in all its aspects, whether medical, psychological or biological. IUCT Oncopole therefore brings together doctors, surgeons, radiotherapists, health professionals, teachers, researches and industrialists. In all, there are 3000 employees on an enormous 550 acre site. There is also a biopark for biotech startups, a public cancer research centre, a centre of advanced technologies for life sciences, a start-ups incubator and hotels, services and associations for patients and families. Boys will have the opportunity to shadow doctors, gain an overview of the fabrication of chemotherapy drugs, be shown oncogenetic research on cancer heredity and get involved in data analysis. The work experience is open to those aged 16 years above, offering encouragement to those boys who have taken their GCSE French one year early and are keen to continue their study of the language. There has already been great interest from boys, as they start to see that their hard work in language acquisition can open doors far away from the classroom. We are keen to strengthen the link in future years and find more such specialist opportunities for boys to employ their language skills. The high achievements of the school were ultimately recognised by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) who inspected Edge Grove in September 2015 and consequently rated it ‘excellent’ in all areas. The ISI stated that the school is “highly successful in meeting its ambitious aims” and that at all stage of the school “the quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements is excellent. Key factors supporting high achievement are the extensive and innovative curriculum, pupils’ understanding attitudes towards their learning and excellent teaching.” During the inspection, the ISI inspectors observed that pupils are “caring, polite and exceptionally well behaved. They are diligent in their approach to lessons and their behaviour is exemplary.” They rated the pastoral care as ‘excellent’ and concluded that Edge Grove “fulfills its aim to provide a secure and happy environment in which pupils feel safe, nurtured and valued.” The contribution of teaching and the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of the pupils was also observed as “excellent.” Edge Grove looks forward to welcoming prospective parents to visit the school, meet Ben Evans and tour the school. Guide To Etiquette For Children

F

or once the despairing pundits, pollsters and commentators are in agreement: children’s manners are getting worse. Table manners are a thing of the past, respect for elders is out of the window, and so on. Yet many parents riposte that it is no longer a question of manners, it’s a question of natural behaviour. Their little darling may like to be louder than the town crier, may want to crawl round other people’s feet in a restaurant, may need to have their parent’s instant attention for their own important demands - but they’re just children, and who are we to say that these natural impulses should be cramped within our own narrow view of manners? Why not try and find a compromise between old-school stiffness and laissez-faire carelessness? Follow these basic precepts: • Teach your child empathy from an early age. Keep reiterating remarks like “how would you feel if someone said that to you?”, and you’ll get your child into the habit of thinking about the impact their behaviour has on others. • Emphasise the importance of sharing. This doesn’t come naturally, so you have to actually tell children to offer sweets around, give other kids a go on the swing etc. Again, repetition is valuable. • Remind them of their ps and qs. This effectively means endlessly reiterations of “say please”, “say thank you”… • Teach your children not to interrupt when you’re speaking. Again, repeated reminders work best. • Teach your child to listen carefully. This might entail them getting rewards for sitting still and listening attentively. Listening well is an incredibly important social skill, which will prove invaluable when it comes to making conversations.

20 APRIL 2016

Table Manners

Table manners are by no means natural. Eventually you will have to teach children to wield and knife and fork correctly, not slurp from a glass, and may even introduce them to the arcane mysteries of correct cutlery usage, tipping soup bowls way from you etc. Don’t get bogged down in these minutiae. Concentrate instead on the absolute essentials. And always bear in mind that if you get too uptight about manners, you will turn family mealtimes into an absolute purgatory that is dreaded by children and adults alike. Repeated lectures about nagging remarks about shortcomings do not make for a convivial atmosphere. Absolutely Essential Table Manners • Wait until everyone has started before you do; if you are specifically invited to start immediately, it is acceptable to do so. • Always eat with your mouth closed. • Always use cutlery (fingers are for bread, fruit and barbecues) • Never reach across the table and help yourself to food; always ask for food to be passed to you (a please won’t go amiss). • Eat as much as you can, then put your knife and fork together on the plate to indicate you have finished. • Ask permission to leave the table, or wait until there is a general move to do so Debrett’s Cygnets, classes teaching dining etiquette for children from the age of 7. ollowing the Forest School principles, our lessons develop the children’s curiosity, confidence, self-esteem, creativity, communication skills, knowledge of the natural environment and the ability to assess risk. Activities are carefully planned to meet both these principles and the aims of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. We have our own Forest School area, The Dell – a large sunken woodland area that was the house’s sunken garden in Victorian times and now makes a perfect location for our pupils to experience the outdoor world in a safe environment. Children start to visit The Dell from Kindergarten and still enjoy it when they reach age 11. Activities range from toasting marshmallows, to building dens, constructing skeletons from twigs and going on a bug hunt. Lessons in The Dell are carefully planned to teach children about the natural environment, how to use their initiative to solve problems, work as teams and handle risk. Our staff have been trained to supervise Forest School activities and we are accredited by Down the Woods, an organisation that provides information and training on outdoor education. Experimenting with Raku firing BISHOP'S STORTFORD COLLEGE

By placing the pots in a reduced atmosphere that is starved of oxygen, the flames draw oxygen out of the copper oxide in the glaze mixture to give a beautiful range of colours and effects, they are then enhanced by the smoke from the combustible materials post firing. Building on last year’s successes, a new process called Obvara was tested, where 850 degree pots are dipped into a fermented yeast mixture. The results of this Eastern European technique were beautiful, giving the pots a permanent tiger loaf crust effect. The College has some highly talented pupils, who have continued to create wonderful ceramics; building the Raku kiln is part of the Art

Department’s aim to help them achieve their artistic ambitions, to support and encourage pupils to push boundaries and to try something hands on and exciting. Raku firing is usually a technique only offered by universities, so College pupils have had the rare opportunity to learn and be inspired by new methods. The flames and smoke created plenty of intrigue around the kiln as this technique, whilst being particularly hot, allows for multiple firings to take place during a day. During this year's firing over 13 kiln loads of work was processed throughout the 14 hour firing! Students from the Lower Fifth, Upper Fifth, Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth took part in the firing with some beautiful results from crackled metallic turquoise to the wonderfully rustic Obvara finish.

Busy Bees Nursery in St Albans launches new baby development group

New parents in St Albans can now take advantage of a baby development group launched by the St Albans Nursery and Montessori Pre-school.

T

he sessions are open to all, free of charge and take place every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am 11.00am at the Busy Bees nursery on Hatfield Road, where parents and children aged two and under take part in a number of fun and engaging activities. Within the group an experienced team of childcare practitioners are on hand to advise parents on how to enhance their child’s learning from an early age and better understand their development. The sessions also provide parents with the opportunity to share their experiences and get together with other new mums and dads. Lorraine Middleton, nursery manager at the St Albans Nursery and Montessori Pre-school, said:“The baby development group is a great way

to show new parents how they can stimulate their baby’s mind from a very young age. We get the babies and parents involved in a range of activities, all centered around play, but with a common goal of enhancing their learning. Parents and our childcare practitioners are constantly engaging with the children in an exciting environment, designed to nurture and develop their young minds.” Each week, there is a different theme for the group and the up and coming sessions include activities for children aged two and under to take part in such as messy play, rhyme time, finger painting and sensory play. Lorraine continued: “These sessions also provide a platform to demonstrate to parents the sort of fun learning enhancements we’re doing at the nursery each day covering the foundations of maths, science and language skills through investigative and experimental play.” THE DETAILS For more information about the Baby Development Group which takes place at the Busy Bees nursery on Hatfield Road, please contact Lorraine on 01727 833 980 or visit www.busybeeschildcare.co.uk/nursery/hatfieldroad

Love Handles - AAARGHH!

I

Tumbleweed. Dandelions on your lawn. Gremlins. Those are all things that are notoriously hard to get rid of. But not quite as hard, I think, as getting rid of love handles…

f you’ve tried losing weight, it’s quite likely that you’ve slimmed down all over – but those bulges around your gut are still there, spilling over the tops of your jeans and making it hard to wear fitted clothes. It’s similarly possible to whittle away every ounce of spare body fat through exercise – and yet still keep your love handles. They are usually the last thing to go, and for many people, never go at all.

despite being very fit – I still didn’t like my shape. Ultimately I realised that my love handles were not going away on their own, and that the only solution was to get some help from aesthetic medicine. (I chose Vaser, but as you already know, there are terrific non-surgical options.) If you, too, have tried diet and exercise but are still plagued by your love handles, it may be the best solution for you as well.

If you, too, have tried diet and exercise but are still plagued by your love handles, it may be the best solution for you as well Why do they so incredibly difficult to shift? Two reasons. First of all, some people simply have a genetic predisposition to storing fat around their love handles – just as others are predisposed to storing fat around their tummies or thighs. That’s their natural body shape, and it has nothing to do with weight. You can be extremely lean, but you still have to store fat somewhere. Often, hormones are a factor too. High levels of oestrogen are associated with body fat being stored around the love handle area - in men as well as women. Second of all, it’s impossible to target your love handles with specific exercises, like you might target your arms, glutes or abs. Sure, you can do exercises that burn fat all over your body – but if your love handles are where your body likes storing fat, they’re not going anywhere. I know how frustrating this is from personal experience. I played squash at competitive level, was very careful with what I ate and yet my shirts never fitted me right because I just could not get rid of my love handles. I cannot tell you how many times I considered giving up my exercise and diet, because after all that effort – and 72 APRIL 2016

Nail the Nineties look Moschino women’s spring-summer 2016 collection

Kenzo’s Spring-Summer 2016,

If the SS16 catwalks told us anything, it’s that the Nineties fashion revival is in full swing, and it was no different backstage. By Katie Wright, Press Association

W

e lost count of the number of make-up artists citing influences from those hazy premillennium days, but thinking back, is Nineties make-up really something we want to bring back - all that lip gloss and bronzer? As it happens, yes, it is - because this time round, the make-up maestros have translated the best of the decade, making it super wearable and ideal for spring. Here’s how to nail the Nineties look now...

BROWS NOW

Kneeling unabashedly at the alter of that Nineties goddess, the Supermodel, make-up artist Tom Pecheux gave models at Moschino huge brows, shimmering skin and mahogany 74 APRIL 2016

lips, all topped off with Linda Evangelistastyle pixie crop wigs. At Christopher Kane, Lucia Pieroni said the brows were “a bit feral”, which means you should be combing them up and out, before filling in with a brow pencil that matches your natural shade. If you’ve gone a bit tweezer-happy and plucked beyond recognition, try Illamasqua’s new Brow Build, which contains micro-fibres to subtly thicken and fill brows. Illamasqua Brow Build in Flow, £18.50 (available April 7; www.illamasqua.com); MAC Big Brow Pencil in Spiked, £16 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk)

TAME YOUR TAN

Back in the Nineties, before Instagram, the Kardashians and the rise of the YouTube make-up tutorial, contouring wasn’t ‘a thing’ and bronzer was applied liberally with a huge brush, the aim being an all-over tan, as if you’d just returned from two weeks in Miami. Nowadays, it’s all about carefully placed colour, so use a small contouring brush and a shimmery (rather than matte) bronzing powder across your cheekbones, temples and down the sides of your nose, then use a larger brush to blend out. You’re aiming for what Lynsey Alexander at Kenzo called “a desert sepia-toned tan”. Illamasqua Beyond Powder in Epic, £32 (available April 21; www.illamasqua.com); Givenchy Les Saisons Healthy Glow Powder in Ambre Saison, £36 (www.houseoffraser.co.uk); Blank Canvas Cosmetics F40 Small Tapered Contour Brush, £11.84 (www.blankcanvascosmetics.com)

UP-ALL-NIGHT LINER

Lucia Pieroni designed the make-up looks for Emilio Pucci and Chloe, claiming Nineties grunge and “rave girls” were the inspiration, which explains why both had a gorgeously smudgy eyeliner look. GET THE GLOSS

Make-up artists got really creative when coming up with ways to achieve a pale, matte Nineties lip, using anything but lipstick. At Alberta Ferretti, MAC Da Bling eyeshadow was patted onto lips, and at Blumarine, a pink cream shadow was used. A matte liquid lipstick is an easier way to get the look, and has better staying power, but for the ultimate Nineties homage, it doesn’t get better than a shiny brown lip, as seen at Kenzo. Either slick on a heap of caramelhued gloss or, for longer-lasting colour, fill in your pout with a tawny liner and finish with clear gloss on top. Is the search for the perfect black mascara every really over? Our testers try three of the latest launches... Rimmel London Volume Colourist Mascara in Black

8/10

After the suggested two-week wear of this tint-meets-mascara, my lashes did appear darker and more volumised, and the brush fulfils its promise of making lashes fuller and longer. However, on a number of occasions, I was left with remnants of black under my eyes, which I had to tend to during the day. £7.99 (www.boots.com)

Max Factor Voluptuous False Lash Effect Mascara in Black

This mascara definitely delivers superlong lashes, but it took me a bit of practise to get used to the long and thick wand, which meant I had to spend more time than usual with a lash comb, removing clumps. That said, when applied well, the results are great. £9.99 (www.superdrug.com)

9/10

Estee Lauder Sumptuous Knockout Defining Lifting and Fan Mascara in 01 Black

With a wand that’s thicker in the centre, and short, sturdy bristles, the brush pushes lashes out and up, opening the eye more with each stroke. The ‘fan’ effect is really noticeable, but I would have preferred a bit 9/10 more volume. £24 (www.esteelauder.co.uk)

Spotlight on…

Hyder Ridha, cosmetic and aesthetic surgeon at Spire Harpenden Hospital Mr Ridha has recently started practicing at Spire Harpenden. Here, he explains how cosmetic surgery can change more than just how you look. How long have you been a surgeon?

“I’ve been a surgeon for 10 years. I am based at the Lister hospital for my NHS post and Spire Harpenden for my private work.”

What do you do?

“I’m a fully accredited Plastic and Cosmetic surgeon, specialising in breast, skin and head & neck microsurgical reconstruction. This involves using a patient’s own tissue to reconstruct areas in the body, following cancer treatment or trauma. This is performed with microsurgery and avoids the use of foreign materials, giving a more natural result. I am also fully trained in surgical and non-surgical aesthetic treatments, specialising in the face, breasts and body. This includes procedures such as breast augmentation, reduction or uplift; facial surgery including facelifts, nose reshaping and eyelid rejuvenation. Body surgery includes tummy tucks, liposuction and lipofilling (fat injections).”

What questions do patients commonly ask you?

“Will I look artificial or look like I’ve had plastic surgery? I reassure my patients that the idea of aesthetic surgery is to try to create a natural look so that you look more rejuvenated and fresh, but do not look artificial. A lot of patients are also concerned about scarring; with any kind of surgery there will be scars, however as a plastic surgeon I have been trained to place these scars in areas that are hidden and not so obvious.”

What’s the biggest myth about cosmetic surgery? “That it’s only beneficial in terms of appearance. Although it does enhance appearance to an extent, I feel the greatest benefit is in terms of patients self-esteem and confidence - something which is not appreciated by people who haven’t had cosmetic surgery. This is particularly the case in 76 APRIL 2016

breast reconstruction after a patient has had a mastectomy. Although the main aim of treatment is to remove the cancer which is life threatening, the reconstruction of the breast is particularly important in terms of improving quality of life and regaining confidence after such a life changing event.’’

What is your favourite thing about being a surgeon?

The thing I enjoy most is the impact that I can have on a patient’s life in a positive way, just from a surgical procedure.

What do you do in your spare time?

I am a keen footballer and I still continue playing to keep myself fit and feel that it is a great stress reliever. My other pleasure is cars, and I enjoy watching races as well as going to the tracks and driving myself. I also enjoy travelling when time allows, and am particularly fond of Italy, as I love the food and walking around the beautiful historic sites.

What’s your favourite film?

I really enjoy science fiction – I have recently seen Interstellar, a film about space and time travel- which I really enjoyed.

What do you like about Spire Harpenden?

The staff are professional and friendly. Teresa, the clinical nurse who specialises in cosmetic surgery is an amazing member of the team and helps support patients throughout their journey from start to finish. I

t’s clear celebs love a pastel dye job, and now the My Little Pony hair trend has hit the catwalks, with models at the Haider Ackermann SS16 show rocking a rainbow’s worth of candy colours in their hair. But does this sugar-sweet look work in the real world? Absolutely! And it’s easily achieved with temporary colour, even if you’re not blonde to begin with, so you don’t have to commit for long. We’ve got the experts’ advice on five sugary shades and how to achieve them...

THINK PINK

“We’ve seen some great on-trend colours being used on celebs and the catwalk, and now consumers can create the looks in salons,” says Josh Wood, Wella Professionals global creative director of colour. He describes the salononly Wella Professionals Instamatic as a collection of “soft, diffused and muted tones that allow for unlimited creativity”, including Pink Dream, perfect for following Rita and Jessie’s lead - but hair will need to be pre-lightened first (find your nearest salon at www.wella.com). For a more temporary touch of pink that works on darker hair, try Fudge Urban Hair Art Pink Ink spray, currently reduced to £3.99 from £5.99, which disappears after one wash (www.superdrug.com).

CORAL CRUSH

“If you have warm-toned skin, this works well with peaches and corals,” advises Sean Nolan, technical educator for HOB Salons. “And hair chalks are great for experimenting, as they are the easiest to wash out of your hair.” Tracy Hayes, head of global colouring for Fudge Professional, adds: “Fudge Urban Hair Art sprays are highly pigmented pastel sprays that work even on dark hair and wash straight out, so you can switch up your hair colour as often as you like.” But with pre-lightened pastels, colour can fade quickly: “Avoid washing every day if possible, as the colour will fade with each shampoo,” says Hayes. “Use warm water and a gentle shampoo that’s sulphate and paraben-free.” Pixie Lott Paint Hair Chalks, currently reduced to £3.32 from £4.99 (www.superdrug. com); Fudge Paintbox in Coral Blush, £9.25 (available in salon or via www.fudgehair.co.uk)

“A great way to get to grips with what skin tone you are is to look at the jewellery, make-up and accessories you wear. If you wear blusher rather than bronzer, or silver jewellery, lean towards cooler pastels,” says Nolan. That means Kylie Jenner greens, from mint to turquoise, will work for you. Blondes can mix Fudge Paintbox Turquoise Days, £9.25, with Whiter Shade Of Pale, £11.25, to create a softer shade (www.fudgehair.co.uk). Brunettes, try dip-dying with Quif Blast Creative Colour in

Pretty Green, £9.95, for a shimmering finish (www.quif.com).

AZURE LIKE IT

“If you have a warm or pinkie skin tone, I would avoid the warm palette, such as coral and pastel pinks, but go with the cooler pastels, like lilacs or blues,” says Hayes, which means you can try the Instagram trend for grey-blue ‘denim hair’ - but you’ll need to start with bleach blonde tresses for this one. At home, Maria Nila Colour Refresh in Azure, £16.99 (SallyExpress.com), will give it a baby blue wash, and in the salon ask for Wella Instamatic Ocean Storm shade (www.wella.com).

ULTRA VIOLET

“Pastels tend to work best on pale blondes. However, brunettes can still get involved, keeping to blues and violets, as they tend to work better on the cooler skin tone,” says Nolan. Pixie Lott Paint Wash Out Hair Colour in Violet 102, currently reduced to £3.99 from £5.99 (www. superdrug.com), will work best on blonde hair, but Label M Powder Purple Spray, £6.50 (AllBeauty.com), is dense enough to show up on darker hair too, giving a gorgeous violet wash.

“This vegan, organic product is completely natural but just as effective as other eyeliners - and cleverly comes with its own sharpener. The formula is creamy in texture, meaning it glides on easily on the lower or upper lid - and stays put 4/5 until you’re ready to take it off.” £13.50 (www.inika.co.uk)

Everything in the garden …

B

arlow Tyrie is the world’s oldest manufacturer of teak garden furniture, and we’re very happy to be exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show again this year. This will be our ninth year at the show, and it’s always a highlight of our calendar. Of course, this year marks the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth, and I’m sure there will be many splendid tributes to her royal majesty at the show. At Barlow Tyrie, we passed our 90th a few years back (not individually, I hasten to add, but as a company), and we’re looking forward to celebrating our centenary in

92 APRIL 2016

2020. In the meantime, we’re concentrating on developing new products, hoping to add to our 18 awards for design excellence. While we have our own award-winning design team, led by Mark Tyrie, we like to work with outside designers as well. Currently we produce five major ranges designed by internationally-respected designers; each very different in style and approach, but each bringing valuable variation to our catalogue. Tim Fenby is an award-winning British designer, who has worked extensively around the world. He is

renowned for bringing a unique understanding of global markets and trends to his designs, which can be seen today in quality independent retailers and major department stores. Tim has designed the sleek and modern Avon range in teak exclusively for Barlow Tyrie. Laura Kirar is the New York based founder and creative director of LAURA KIRAR Design. Drawing inspiration from Japanese basket weaving, Laura has created a unique tri-axial weave pattern for our Kirar range. The design has subtly married traditional weave techniques with modern aesthetics and, with its sumptuous curves and generous proportions, the Kirar Collection delivers both comfort and beauty. Vladimir Kagan is one of today’s most enduring designers of modern furniture, with a career spanning over sixty years. He is recognised as one of the most important furniture designers of the 20th century, and his early designs from the forties, fifties, and sixties have become icons of modernity. Kagan designs are avidly collected by connoisseurs and museums worldwide. Vladimir has designed our striking Arizona, Dune, and Savannah ranges.

A theme is emerging . . .

Back to this year though, and another highlight for us was to have been chosen by the Royal Academy to complement their exhibition ‘Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse’. This has been a hugely successful exhibition, running from January to April at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and featuring works by Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Pissarro, Manet, Sargent, Kandinsky, Van Gogh, Matisse, Klimt, and Klee. Those of you who had the chance to visit will have noticed that many of the individual ‘rooms’ making up the gallery space also contained teak garden furniture. This was an assortment of Barlow Tyrie Glenham teak seats and armchairs, and three Balmoral tables – 29 pieces in all, and was intended to give visitors the opportunity to sit and reflect on the paintings as if in a real garden setting. Exhibition designer Robert Carsen said: “I had the idea to use garden benches very early on. You can’t treat the

floors nor the ceiling, so furniture seemed a good way of doing it, and we were very fortunate that Barlow Tyrie – the company that makes this beautiful teak furniture – generously agreed to lend us all of that.” If you’d like to see more, take a look at https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/ article/painting-modern-garden-robert-carsen. But we’re not all about teak, lovely though it is. We manufacture outdoor furniture in stainless steel, powdercoated aluminium, eucalyptus, and hand-woven synthetic fibre. And our ranges often feature a combination of materials; chairs with a stainless steel frame and teak seat and back, for example, or tables with a powder-coated aluminium frame and a teak top, or ceramic tabletops on an aluminium frame, or cord in our teak Monterey chairs (over 200 feet of cord for one armchair!). Whichever materials we use, we make sure to source the best available, and all our furniture is produced using the highest standards of craftsmanship. These are beautiful pieces, built to last. The main criterion is always to combine form and function with manufacturing expertise, and so create pleasing designs with good ergonomic performance, all to make outdoor living as comfortable as it is stylish. In fact . . .

. . . everything in the garden is lovely! THE DETAILS Barlow Tyrie Ltd W: www.TEAK.com E: sales@teak.com T: +44 (0)1376 557 600

Swimming pond in Princes Risborough, Bucks

Swimming pond in Harpenden, Herts

“I

t’s an immaculate temperature, that’s the first thing. And it doesn’t feel like swimming anywhere else, it doesn’t feel like the sea, it doesn’t feel like a salt water pool, it feels incredibly fresh,” says Matthew Van Grutten, one of the visitors at a recent swimming pond open day. “It’s a very special feeling. Overall, an immaculate experience.” “It feels so clean,” agrees Wendy Smith, another visitor at the open day. “It’s like having a really nice bath.” This open day is being organised by Gartenart Swimming Ponds to give people the chance to see a swimming pond, and of course, to swim in it. “The water’s lovely, really crystal clear,” says Chris Graham, swimming pond owner in Princes Risborough, Bucks, where Gartenart hold an open day every year. “You could read a book on the bottom if you threw it down there.” Swimming ponds - or natural swimming pools (the terms mean the same) - have been growing

96 APRIL 2016

in popularity in the UK for several years now, particularly in those locations where maintaining the natural outlook is of prime importance. “I wanted to be able to sit and look out from the garden and see nothing unnatural,” says Sacha Cole, whose swimming pond was installed in Harpenden, Herts. “I wanted the pond to be part of a view that flowed seamlessly from the garden to the countryside beyond... I love the natural beauty of it, the way it grows and becomes part of the garden.” But how can what is essentially a wildlife pond actually stay clean? “A swimming pond works by keeping the nutrient level in the water very low,” explains Tim Evans, managing director of Gartenart, who have built over one hundred swimming ponds in the UK in the last ten years. “Under these conditions water naturally stays clean and clear, like a lake you may come across in the mountains. The water there is clear and even drinkable, not because of the temperature, but because there is very little nutrient input. The natural microscopic processes in the water then remain in balance, and the result is clear and healthy water.” This is unlike the water in most wildlife ponds we see around us, which as we well know, is usually not something you would want to dive into. The reason for this is that the nutrient level in these ponds is invariably very high, with run-off from roads, fields, and decomposing organic matter from leaves and other plant life. A swimming pond is set up to minimise this input of nutrients, and the water in the pond is also

circulated internally to reduce the nutrient level further still. How about temperature? Surely it’s just too cold to swim regularly in unheated water in this country? Well, apparently not, according to swimming pond owners, with most reporting temperatures of 22-24 degrees throughout the summer and even up to 26-27 degrees in warm periods, due to the shallow planting areas heating up quickly in the sun. It is, however, possible to add heating if you wish. The other common question is around costs. A swimming pond starts from £80,000 incl VAT for a naturally designed pond, and most domesticsized swimming ponds suitable for family use cost between £80-£100,000 incl VAT. Features such as heating, tiling etc, of course add to this.

any of us would like to make a big change to our home without a big cost or being forced to move house. Herts Bifold Doors are able to offer customers another option as they can carry out small building work to allow customers to transform windows or French doors which they currently have installed to an opening big enough to house bifolding doors. Recently Herts Bifold Doors carried out a transformation like this in St Albans where two existing timber French doors were taken out, a new steel was installed, this created the aperture which we were then able to install a lovely Schuco bifold door. Herts Bifold Doors are able to undertake each part of this installation although the structural calculations are the responsibility of the customer. The trained installation team who carried this out were given the company camera to photograph this along the way, as you can see the transformation looks great.

Spring at Knebworth House Gardens Adam Carvet, Head Gardener shares his topical tips

T

he best season for me as a gardener is spring as it gives a sign of hope but before that there is work to do here at Knebworth and its 28 acres of historic garden looking its best for when we open for spring. And there was no better job to do for our new year at Knebworth than by uncovering from what I can only describe as a horticultural gem that has to be seen close to admire its beauty or age and the best time as a visitor to do this will be in May. This tree I am talking about is Halesia Carolina or the snowdrop tree with a mass of white bell shaped flowers. We knew it was there and read various historic references by past family members talking about this tree but we never got to see its full splendour until now due to a wall of bramble. It took the gardeners two full days to chop back the overgrowth that was blocking the tree but now the curtains have been opened. But one of our main jobs for this year is Sir Edward Lutyens Lime walks in the Sunken Lawn getting their biennial haircut, or short back and sides to be more precise. This has been the way for over 100 hundred years and it has been a real joy to get them pollarded as they look great right now and then when the first buds break releasing some fresh young growth.

104 APRIL 2016

Jobs to keep you busy

• Mulching now with compost or rotted down bark chip will save you some watering and weeding in the summer. • For fresh brightly coloured stems of Cornus or Dogwood, you want to cut the stems right down to a healthy pair of buds. • Moving snowdrops in the green is the best time to plant straight after they have flowered.

The Long Barn Studio

S

et down in a stretching landscape the new studio, it’s materiality subtle – muted, its form rooted in simplicity – emblematic of modern design, is a controlled gesture, gently resting in the countryside, forming an expression of our ideology. The studio’s building strategy is based on an elegant rectangle (a form harmonious with the existing linear adjacent barn) of predominantly glazed elevations capped and enclosed at each end by larch timber clad ‘book ends’. cor-ten detailing further enhances the sense of place, reflecting the old, discarded agricultural machinery and steelwork of the barn.; Accommodation comprises of a reception and seating area for clients, a kitchen, storage, studio space, wc’s, meeting rooms and a library and services pod – a continuous expanse of space defined by volumes of wenge pods containing the ancillary elements of the programme. Frameless, 3.2m high glazed panels, embellished with a slight green tint to reflect the seasons of the landscape, afford panoramic views of the peaceful landscape and provide a comfortable and inspiring environment for the practices’ 7 members of staff. these glazed facades are punctured by timber clad pods – within which dedicated functions subsist – whose floating appearance evinces a gentle tension through the contrasting properties of solidity and levity. The

timber clad boxes are utilised more on the southern elevation to protect the building from overheating; whilst high levels of insulation ensure the building far exceeds building regulation requirements on heat loss. Employing a wind turbine, rainwater harvesting, eco paint, low energy central controlled lighting and underfloor heating, a central vacuum and air control systems, the studio, central to our aims, consciously approaches contemporary issues of sustainability.

The studio building has recently been awarded eight prestigious awards in recognition of its innovative design: • RIBA National Award 2009 • CPRE (campaign for the rural protection of england) regional – best commercial project 2009 • Design Week Awards – Best Commercial Project 2009 • Creative East Awards – Best Workspace Environment 2009 • LABC (local authority building control) regional – best commercial project under £1million 2009 • RIBA east- spirit of ingenuity- Best Commercial Project 2008 • Bedfordshire Association of Architects – Best Commercial Project 2008 • International Property Awards 2011 – Office Architecture

Bi-folding doors It is all about getting the right configuration

110 APRIL 2016

I

f you are thinking about replacement bifolding and sliding doors for an existing “opening” to replace French doors, sliding patio doors or casement windows, or indeed looking at fitting folding and sliding doors into an extension - getting the right configuration first time round is vital to ensure their long-term practical operation. When it comes to “Bi-Fold” doors the clue is in the name, yet, despite this, many double glazing customers still get into hot water when having bifolding doors fitted, as before ordering they did not take the time to think through the ramifications of certain configurations. The key thing with bi-folding doors is to remember that each “pair” of bi-folds, opens and closes in tandem, so cannot operate as individual sections, they are in-effect one. As these two folding door sections are inextricably linked, no pair of bifolding doors can therefore accommodate a normal door handle, nor can one of these two sections operate as a travel door without the other opening or closing at the same time. Consequently, if you want to have a single travel door as part of your bifolding door configuration, you need to have an odd number of sections, namely 3, 5, 7 or 9 panes etc. Only high quality bi-folding doors will last regular use, as quality bi-folds are highly technical pieces of kit (and yes, they are expensive as a consequence!), it is vital when purchasing double glazed bifolding and sliding doors to invest wisely in robust enough products that will still be operational in 10 years’ time when the guarantee runs out and the

homeowner is left to foot the bills for all the call-out charges, parts and labour to get the folding doors operational and secure again. To avoid such issues, it is wise not to buy cheap folding and sliding doors, or indeed bi-folding doors without a cast iron warranty from a firm you are 100% certain will be around for at least the next 10 years to service the guarantee. It is worth asking yourself why some established UK independent double glazing manufacturers and installers who supply and fit aluminium and UPVC front doors, back doors, French doors and sliding patio doors in both aluminium and UPVC, refuse to supply and fit UPVC bi-folding doors. Could it be they are not fit for purpose? As a material, UPVC flexes, so is not the ideal product to use for bi-folding doors which need rigidity to operate well, and not be in danger of popping out of alignment. High quality double glazed aluminium bi-folding doors not only offer better security than plastic folding doors, but tend to have slimmer profiles, so are aesthetically more pleasing and deliver more glass and daylight. Yes UPVC folding doors are much cheaper to buy, but it is up to each property owner if they want to take on the risks involved, and are prepared to have less glass and light in the room in question. The optimum number of sections for a bifolding door for each particular property is really determined by the size of the aperture and how often these folding and sliding double glazed doors will be used. If you are looking for all the sections to slide in one direction, then a 3, 5, 7 or 9 section door will deliver a travel door with a normal door handle. The problem with 2, 4, 6 or 8 section bifolds doors which all flow in one direction is they cannot have a normal door handle, so are unable to fold up together properly, and therefore are more limited in their operation. Make sure that the doors you have fitted, come with “D” handles to assist with the opening and closing of the doors, as dragging them from one end can pull and stretch

the gasket, leading to unnecessary time consuming service calls. All bi-folding doors systems, whether made of aluminium, steel, UPVC or wood have their limitations in terms of both overall height and overall width, and indeed maximum and minimum achievable pane section sizes. So before creating an opening for bi-folding doors, do make sure that the product you are considering having installed will actually be able to fit it! It is better to make the opening to the optimum size of the bi-folding door system you have chosen, rather than the other way round. One top tip to remember is that these systems are highly technical bits of kits, so make sure they are fitted by professional installers with experience fitting the actual system you are having installed. Many reputable firms will not supply bi-folding doors on a supply only basis for this very reason. Finally, it is worth knowing that some bespoke aluminium bi-folding door systems allow for one single section at one end to swing open, allowing say a 3 section sliding and folding door to butt up to this, enabling the property to have a travel door, pair of French door and bi-folding doors all in one configuration of 3 linked sections, plus one independent swinging open section. Think carefully whether you want your bi-folding doors to a) open to the left or to the right, b) fold inwardly or outwardly and c) have a standard or low threshold. So before ordering bi-folds, take your time and ask an expert for a demonstration of whichever bifolding double glazed product you are considering before committing to a purchase, as not getting it right first time can be very costly. Want to sleep better? Choose the right mattress. “A quality mattress that suits your body shape and sleeping position is integral to a good night’s sleep. It should support the neutral alignment of the spine and should allow your body to relax in its natural position.” – Sleep expert Dave Gibson

W

hen choosing your mattress, it is important to consider the support you need, feel you prefer and preferences of your partner. Generally speaking there are two different types of mattress in terms of feel, sprung (which has coil and pocket sprung versions) and foam.

COIL SPRUNG, POCKET SPRUNG or MEMORY FOAM.

Most of us use sprung mattresses of which there are two main choices, coil (with an interconnected mesh of springs), and pocket sprung (which uses encased, individual springs). Whilst coil offer generalised support, due to the interlocked design, individual pocket sprung mattresses (IPS) offer targeted support with spring only reacting to the weight place upon it, thus minimising the transmission of movement between partners. These IPS mattresses typically cost more due to the intricate design, and are ideal for partners of different weight. Alternatively you can choose memory foam which uses different thicknesses and densities of foam layers for varying levels of support and are ideal for relieving pressure points. These respond to temperature, weight and shape, and mould to support each contour, recovering their shape when pressure is removed. Our Warren Evans memory foam mattresses all come with a temperature regulating, dust mite-resistant and washable Outlast cover. 112 APRIL 2016

WARREN EVANS’ TOP BUYING TIPS

Spring counts (ignore the mattress myths) Higher spring counts are generally marketed as offering a higher quality of mattress, and better comfort and sleep, but make sure that you aren’t substituting quantity for quality. Ensure the mattress has quality springs and a long guarantee. At Warren Evans all our mattresses are designed and built to perfectly balance superior springs and fillers. Because of this, our sprung mattresses have up to a ten-year guarantee, (our memory foams have up to fifteen-year guarantee).

Get the firmness right

A good mattress should provide proper support to

enable you to sleep with your spine in its neutral alignment. To test if a mattress is right for you, try lying flat on the mattress, slipping your hand beneath the small of your back. If you can feel a small gap, then you have found the perfect fit. At Warren Evans we use cotton as our top filler in these mattresses to give a breathable and comfortable feel and wool is added for a deeper feel in some mattresses. In general lighter people need a softer mattress, and those who are heavier a firmer, in order to produce the right support. We recommend you spend at least ten minutes lying on a mattress before deciding whether it’s the right one for you. If the bed is for two, shop together. Which? magazine members gave Warren Evans 5 ***** for Advice, Range, Delivery and Quality in their “Best Mattress Retailers” survey 2015. To ensure you have the best night’s sleep, we’re offering Life Magazine readers free delivery on their orders, simply quote “LifMag” online, over the phone or instore when placing your order.
