‘We loved it. Food was great, wasn’t too crowded but most importantly the staff were excellent. Nothing was too much trouble and they were incredibly polite. I thought they were very well dressed unique and even your bouncer was probably the coolest guy there. The music was also good, but it’s the staff that have client interaction and they were great, so well done.’ –Allenby Capital

Stressed at work? W
e all live busy lives and the pressure of 21st century careers cannot be underestimated. Struggling to meet deadlines and your employer’s unreasonable expectations, can often make us feel stressed. Worryingly, the TUC’s recent research* showed that more than 5 million UK workers put in a total of 2 billion unpaid hours in 2018. A lot is expected of us in today’s workplace. No wonder we feel overworked.
What is stress? The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) describe stress as “an adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them”. Stress means something different to each of us, but some of the symptoms of stress at work include depression, anxiety and insomnia. They can show themselves in the workplace by: • Taking time off • Arriving late • Being irritable or nervous • Reduction in performance • Lack of motivation and commitment • Feeling unable to cope
What can your employer do to help? Under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, employers have a duty to protect the safety and welfare of their employees, and this includes conducting risk assessments for work related stress. Mental Health issues need to be addressed in a similar manner as physical disabilities. Some suggestions to help combat stress in employees include having an ‘open door’ policy to allow employees to voice their concerns, operating flexible work/life balance employment models and providing positive feedback and communication on 26 APRIL 2019
tasks achieved, as well as rendering a counselling service.
Making a claim for stress at work If you think that you are stressed because of your job, you should firstly speak to your manager, and also your GP. It is difficult to bring a claim for compensation against an employer if they are not notified of how you are feeling. If this is then not addressed, and your concerns not dealt with, speak to us about how we can help.
Bringing a claim against your employer To bring a successful claim at work, it is necessary to prove that you have a recognised psychological illness, caused by or contributed to by your workplace circumstances. You need to show that: • Your employer failed to provide a safe working environment • The work that you were asked to undertake posed a reasonably foreseeable threat of psychological illness that the employer knew of (or should have known) • Your employer failed to take reasonable and adequate measures to prevent or reduce the risk of psychological harm to you • The stress at work was clearly the cause of the illness
A safe pair of hands At Thomas Dunton Solicitors, we have been standing up for employment rights in the workplace for decades. Our Personal Injury team are specialists in helping you obtain compensation and getting you back on your feet. If you think you require our services, please contact our offices to make an appointment. *March 2019

GRAND DESIGNS LIVE RETURNS TO LONDON 4th – 12th May 2019, London ExCeL
P
roudly sponsored by Anglian Home Improvements, the show will boast new exhibitors and features, as well as the favourites with design guru and TV broadcaster, Kevin McCloud. Whether you are starting your first renovation, building a new home, redecorating a room, installing a new kitchen or simply looking for ideas, Grand Designs Live is the must-visit event for anyone wanting to learn about interiors, design and self-build. As Grand Designs the TV series turns 20 in April 2019, the show will be celebrating with fun and exciting features! In line with its green agenda, Grands Design Live will work with returning charity partner for 2019, Friends of The Earth, launching the brandnew movement the ‘Green Finger Campaign’. A Wildlife forest will be created to show visitors how and where to create wildlife friendly environments in whatever outdoor space they have to work with. Grand Designs Live will continue to support their initiative to reduce the usage of single-use plastics at the show; prohibiting the sale of plastic bottles from all in-show catering points along with the distribution of plastic straws. Visitors will be encouraged to use refillable bottles and water points at the show’s cafes. Also not to be missed is the new interiors feature – The Under the Stairs Project, which

will see eight interior designers showcase bespoke installations, using a commonly neglected area in the home. Visitors can browse and pick up inspirations for their own mini grand designs. Judges for this exciting new competition will include Kevin McCloud and Jenny Gibbs from the KLC School of Design. Established favourites such as Kevin’s Green Heroes will showcase the most ground-breaking and eco-friendly products on the market, and the popular Ask An Expert returns with a host of inspiring and informative seminars at The Grand Theatre . As part of the linking between Grand Designs Live and National Custom and Self Build Week, talks and an expert clinic focusing on Self-Build will take place on weekdays, including topics themed around ‘Busting the myths of Self-Build’. Grand Designs Live feels strongly that supporting this initiative is important as the UK has a much lower rate of self-building than other European countries. NaCSBA and Grand Designs Live will hold a parliamentary reception on 7th May in The Houses of Parliament. This invitation-only event will be hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Self-Build, Custom & Community Housebuilding & Placemaking with the likes of The Housing Minister Kit Malthouse, Richard Bacon MP and Kevin McCloud will be in attendance. Grand Designs Live encourage the public to get involved by submitting questions to the event panel through Grand Designs Live social media or email via info@granddesignslive.com. Covering Build, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Gardens and Interiors the show offers a great day out with hundreds of innovative ideas for the home. Get access to amazing brands launching new products and check out homewares not yet available on the high street.

FUNDING YOUR INJURY CLAIM: WHAT’S ON OFFER? I
n the aftermath of an accident or episode of medical negligence, claimants need prompt and easy access to professional advice but also reassurance concerning the likely cost of bringing a claim. An Internet search will often flag up national claims management companies boasting that they operate on a no win, no fee basis, which is understandably appealing. Despite appearances, the large companies are not offering better funding arrangements than we do as a firm of solicitors. We too run the vast majority of cases on a no win no fee basis, by entering a Conditional Fee Agreement (‘CFA’) with the client when we assess a claimant as having reasonable prospects of succeeding with their claim. We as solicitors are equally able to offer direct, free and prompt access to initial advice regarding a prospective claim. We can conduct that over the telephone or, where appropriate, during a home or hospital visit. Unlike some claims management companies, the initial discussion will always be with a qualified lawyer with expertise in personal injury and clinical negligence claims. Funding options tailored to the individual client will be discussed during that initial contact, with opportunities to ask further questions by phone or e-mail before signing up to anything. A CFA combined with after the event insurance (to cover medical expert fees and court fees, for example) provides complete security to the Claimant in the event that their claim is unsuccessful. With these funding arrangements in place, there is nothing at all for the client to pay throughout the duration of the claim process. You will usually meet the lawyer who will represent you from the outset,
30 APRIL 2019
providing consistent and direct service, whereas the call-handlers at larger companies will filter your enquiry to their panel of solicitors who could be located anywhere in the country. Legal aid reform means that it is now only available in very specific circumstances, for example in relation to serious birth-related injuries; irrespective of who a claimant instructs the strict eligibility criteria apply. There is no financial advantage to a claimant in instructing a claims management company to run their claim. We operate on the same ‘no risk’ basis but with the added benefit of local and personalised service, enabling our clients to focus on their recovery. www.cwj.co.uk

Opening the door to
your child’s future A guide to School Open Days
A
s we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY… • Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting • It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly • Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there. • Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally • Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…. Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school. • How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam? • Are there high expectations and high academic achievements? • Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure) • What are the classroom sizes? • What is expected of my child with regard to homework? • Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia? • Is there a bullying policy? • What lunchtime meals are available? 36 APRIL 2019
• What sports and music facilities are available? • What after school clubs and trips are available? • How many pupils branch out into further education? After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

Babington is an excellent school achieving amazing results and inspiring pupils from the Nursery right through to Sixth Form. It has almost 400 pupils from age 3 to 18 and from September 2019 will be accepting boys into the Senior School in Year 7. Being a small school has BIG advantages. It has high standards of behaviour, dress and conduct, benefiting from no more than 20 pupils in a class and a strong sense of community. Pupils can immerse themselves in every aspect of the school. Be it art, sports teams, drama productions, the stage is theirs and it is not daunting, it is welcoming. No one is left out at Babington. We have high expectations for our pupils conduct and academic achievement and our pupils reach them. Babington has inspiring teachers for inspiring children. reaside are pleased to share that they have been placed 11th in the Sunday Times Top 100 Independent Schools list 2019 a fantastic achievement of which they are incredibly proud! “It is wonderful to be recognised for all of the hard work that the staff and children put into Breaside to make it the very special place that it is.” Mrs Karen Nicholson, Executive Principal. Breaside also work closely with NACE (National Association for Able Children in Education) which nationally recognise and celebrate schools which provide the very highest level of challenge for its pupils. As of June 2018, NACE has named Breaside the first school in Bromley to be accredited with the NACE Challenge Award.
Should I choose Breaside Preparatory School for my child? As their name suggests, the role of preparatory schools is to prepare your child for their entrance into senior education, so don’t be surprised to see a plethora of subjects on the curriculum. Your child will experience a well-rounded education albeit in a nurturing environment. Classes are significantly smaller, allowing all pupils to progress. At the same time, this allows all staff to know their pupils and therefore offer a bespoke curriculum. Preparatory schools provide a wealth of opportunity for your child both academically and pastorally. Self-confidence is encouraged and children are constantly motivated to enjoy and embrace all the opportunities that arise within this 40 APRIL 2019

positive learning environment. If the above isn’t enough to tempt you, consider the other aspects of a stimulating, all-round education. Your child will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of music, playing in an orchestra or participating in the choir. Peripatetic teachers within a preparatory school can introduce your child to a wealth of instruments, regardless of ability. Drama is also extensive with children as young as 3 taking part in plays. Within the encouraging atmosphere of a preparatory school, this can only help to aid your child’s confidence. Let’s not forget the range of sporting events that your child can take part in. Children in a preparatory school experience a range of sports, including rugby, hockey, swimming and cricket. Should you choose a preparatory school for your child? Well, if you want to give them the best possible start in life, then the answer has to be yes. The investment will pay off as you see your child blossom into a well-rounded, self-confident, individual, ready to face the world! Educating boys W
hen considering an educational establishment, great thought must be given to what is right for the child as an individual. Another paramount consideration is how the school actually teaches the gender of children it caters for. Bickley Park School - which was shortlisted in the national Tes Independent School Awards for Prep School of the Year 2019 - believes in tailoring the curriculum to respond to male learning, for tangible benefits. With one hundred years of experience in teaching boys, the school thoroughly understands that studying needs to be relevant and engaging. The unique syllabus delivered at Bickley Park is based around Four Quadrants of Learning, and is designed to put in place building blocks for pupils to thrive, in what will be a very different future world. The Quadrants are broken down as follows: The Academic Quadrant is built around a rigorous approach to learning that enables boys to gain places at some of the country’s leading grammar and independent schools. The school responds to research that suggests boys are motivated by approaches to learning that are active, chunked and outcome-focused. Technology is embraced, with all boys in the Prep Department using their own school-provided iPads in lessons, and studying coding and robotics to a high level. The Arts Quadrant provides a higher than usual number of performance opportunities than most

other prep schools. With a strong emphasis on collaboration, our syllabus helps build confidence and harness the ability to effectively communicate. Knowing that girls speak three times as many words as boys in a day, Bickley Park aims to give boys the tools to be able to express themselves fully. The Community Quadrant promotes awareness of the rewards that can be gained from involvement in different communities, while encouraging a sense of responsibility and service towards others. Last year Bickley Park won an award for one of its community initiatives which brings together the school’s nursery children with elderly residents at a local nursing home. The Sport and Outdoor Education Quadrant provides the opportunity to experience up to 26 different sports and a fantastic outdoor education programme culminating in the Three Peaks Challenge. This Quadrant aims to develop team skills, leadership and boost personal qualities such as resilience and independence. Bickley Park provides an education that will truly help boys stand out from the crowd at senior school and in their future lives as characterful, interesting young men. Bickley Park School is an independent pre-prep and prep school for boys aged 2½ - 13 years, and it is located in Bromley, half an hour from central London. Founded in 1918, the school educates 350 boys across its sites. Visit www.bickleyparkschool.co.uk.

Privately Educated People Dominate Top British jobs The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
T
heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated. Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers
“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
– two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives. In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life
are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Good mental health and wellbeing for pupils is paramount Mike Lamb, Director of Staff and Pupil Wellbeing/Head of Year 9 at Hurst College tells us how good mental health and wellbeing for pupils is paramount, especially around the key transition periods
M
ost people would agree that good mental health and wellbeing is the basis for a happy and successful life at school and beyond. At Hurst this is at the core of what they do and which they consider is especially important around the key transition times. Moving schools can be a challenging experience for pupils and it is important for schools to work closely together to ensure a successful transition. This process begins at Hurst well before a pupil joins them. They invite key staff from their feeder prep schools to witness first-hand how they teach the key subjects and to share ideas and best practice – they also work closely with the respective heads to determine how best to support each pupil when they join. In addition, current pupils return to their prep schools to share their experiences about what it was like when they joined. Hurst hosts a special two-day event, with an overnight for boarders, in the March before Year 9 pupils join, and they take part in a variety of activities and challenges to acquire a real taste for life at Hurst. It is a fantastic experience which helps pupils to familiarise themselves with their new school, make new friends and meet their teachers.
New Year 9 pupils start the school year before any other year groups for a three-day induction programme. This allows staff to focus on supporting new pupils before the school is full again and helps with orientation and a sense of belonging. This is not - and should not - be the end of supporting the transition. There are a number of teambuilding and bonding experiences in the first few weeks, such as a multi-activity day, which involves abseiling, zip wire, pot-holing and the like. Hurst believes that a busy, challenging, engaging and rewarding day and weekly timetable is vital in order for a pupil to successfully settle. The school day is packed with learning and activities - plus there is the opportunity to exercise during three 46 APRIL 2019
games sessions each week, either through team sports such as rugby and netball, or alternatives such as climbing, gym or triathlon. All Year 9 pupils also take part in drama, dance, PE and there is an activities afternoon each Tuesday – with everything from football to shooting - plus enrichment activities later in the week, which could involve dismantling a Dyson vacuum, developing travel writing skills or learning Mandarin Chinese. The recently developed Year 9 wellbeing programme was designed to provide pupils with a quieter moment in the middle of the week. On a carousel over the year, pupils are able to develop some mindfulness techniques, practice yoga and also spend time on the college farm, plus they learn how to make fires and shelters in the surrounding woods. Through their diverse and varied curriculum, Hurst believes pupils will thrive and develop the life skills they need to achieve their personal bests. Combined with a robust tutorial programme this helps develop other attributes such as effective study skills, an understanding of the world around them and how to maintain good relationships with others, which stands them in good stead for life beyond Hurst. Tutors meet regularly with the pupils in their care, to identify the type of support required, and the school works closely with parents to help pupils achieve their potential. Later this year, Hurst will be launching their inaugural Wellbeing Conference when local schools will be invited to join them for presentations and discussions about good mental health and transition between schools. www.hppc.co.uk

Putting Understanding of Dementia into Action T
he Cinnamon Care Collection’s flagship care home - Emerson Grange in Hextable gave residents’ families and members of the local community an insight into what it feels like to live with dementia by inviting them to step inside a Dementia Tour Bus for an immersive ‘dementia experience.’ Dementia is caused by diseases that affect the brain - the most common is Alzheimer’s but others include vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and Pick’s disease. Different types of dementia affect the brain at different rates and in different ways and will progress in a way that is unique to each individual. The word ‘dementia’ describes a set of symptoms which may include memory loss but also difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These changes are often small to start with, but for someone with dementia they can become severe enough to affect daily life. A person with dementia may also experience changes in their mood or behaviour. Emerson Grange invited training company Training2Care to bring along their dementia bus to provide participants with the opportunity to feel what it’s like to live with dementia. The ‘dementia experience’ involves wearing adapted gloves to make it awkward to touch and handle items, glasses to impair vision, shoes that made walking uncomfortable and a device to inhibit hearing. Participants were also given the chance to take part in a Dementia Friends information session which is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative to help

people learn more about the condition and turn that understanding into action. Over 2.5 million people in the UK have become Dementia Friends and each person learns that they can make a real difference to peoples’ lives. After the session a local Hextable resident commented “The Dementia Friends session I attended today was fascinating and so many of the messages struck a real chord for me in relation to my Mum – it was actually quite emotional! I now need my brother to come along so we both know how we can support her!” Emerson Grange Care Home provides residential, dementia, nursing and respite care and holds regular Dementia Friends information sessions. Anyone is welcome to call the home and register their interest in attending a future event. Paul Hart, General Manager of Emerson Grange Care Home, added, “We are delighted that so many residents, their friends, families and members of the local community took up the ‘dementia experience’ opportunity. Understanding what it feels like to have a dementia can greatly improve empathy and practical care. At Emerson Grange, we aim to provide the very best dementia care but we are always open to new learning and insight to share best care practice.” For further information on Emerson Grange Care Home and Emerson Park Retirement Apartments please call 01322 515415 or visit www.cinnamoncc.com/emersonpark

What is Osteopathy? Initial Consultation
L
et me introduce myself, my name is Ernesto De La Cruz Valdes and I am a registered Osteopath. Education: BOst (Hons) Osteopathy Medicine; BSc (Hons) Physical Education; Registration Number: 9987. I would like to talk about Osteopathy. Osteopathy was developed 130 years ago by physician A.T. Still(Pettman2007). Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. Osteopathy is a primary care profession focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders. Commonly treated conditions include back, neck and shoulder pain, upper and lower limb problems, neck related headaches, minor sport and workrelated conditions and arthritic pain. Osteopaths employ techniques to restore mobility, function and blood flow to help the body to heal itself. Most will incorporate soft tissue, joint mobilisation; spinal and peripheral joint manipulation and neuro-muscular procedures. Treatment does not target symptoms only but also addresses the parts of the body that have caused the symptoms. Osteopaths take a holistic approach and believe that the whole body will work well if it is in good structural balance. To qualify as an osteopath requires at least
56 APRIL 2019
four years’ study for an undergraduate degree. This is similar to a medical degree, but with a greater emphasis on anatomy and musculoskeletal medicine. It includes more than 1,000 hours of training in osteopathic techniques. After graduation, osteopaths are required to complete continuing professional development (CPD) courses to retain their registration. Patient safety is of paramount importance; by law, osteopaths must register with the General Osteopathic Council and it is an offence for anyone to use the title if they are not registered. Osteopaths are skilled in diagnostic techniques and trained to identify when a patient needs to be referred to a GP. Increasingly they work alongside GPs and other healthcare professionals, providing treatment both privately and through the NHS. Source: www.osteopathy.org.uk/visiting-an-osteopath/aboutosteopathy www.cruzosteopathy.co.uk
During your first visit a full history will be taken on your presenting complaint, questions on your medical and family history will be asked along with lifestyle, occupation, sporting and leisure activities that you do regularly. A physical examination is always carried out. This involves looking at the body as a whole rather than just the area causing pain or discomfort. Observation and palpation (hands-on) of tissues will identify areas of restriction and weakness. You will be asked to carry out a series of simple movements so comfortable, loose clothes and appropriate underwear is requested (a pair of shorts can be worn over your underwear, if preferred). The results of the physical examination and a working diagnosis will be explained to you along with a proposed treatment and management plan prior to treatment commencing.
Further Consultations: Some patients only need one appointment whilst others may have a course of treatment or will return periodically. Treatment is determined according to patients’ progression rather than a prescriptive number of sessions.

Sunrise of Frognal: 20 years of care in the heart of the local area S unrise of Frognal House, set in seven acres of beautiful landscape grounds, is a care home that has been dedicated to championing the delivery of personalised care for two decades. Our team ensures that individual care needs are catered for. From assisted living and respite to dementia care and independent living – we have everything covered. The bespoke care programmes and facilities allow residents to continue to lead fulfilling lives, all in the comfort and security of a supportive and compassionate environment. As part of this, we champion an active and thriving lifestyle, with activities and events to encourage residents to continue doing the things they love most, while exploring new opportunities.
Here’s what team members and residents say: Linda – Care Assistant, Assisted Living Neighbourhood I’ve been with Sunrise for 10 years. If I can make even just one resident smile a day, I feel like I’ve made a difference to someone’s life. Especially via music. Music never leaves anybody. So, whenever we’ve got music going or entertainment happening I love getting everyone up and dancing or involved in any way they are able. Bimpe – Care Assistant, Memory Care Neighbourhood Sunrise feels like home - like a family. In 2008, when 58 APRIL 2019
I came here for the first time, I said wow, this is where I’m going to work. You feel comfortable here in the environment – even just coming through the gates you feel at home. It’s a good workplace; we are all one.
Pat - Concierge I’ve been here coming up 17 years now. I’ve done 10 ½ years on the floor as a carer, then a lead carer, and since then I’ve been on Concierge. I couldn’t think of working anywhere else and I wouldn’t want to! I’m nearly 73 but I couldn’t imagine ever giving up. I love all the residents; each one of them and even something as small as giving them a newspaper in the morning and seeing their faces light up – it’s the small things that are worth their weight in gold, and that’s the truth of it. Nell – Resident, Assistant Living Neighbourhood I’ve been here two years and ten months and in that time I’ve lost two brothers, two sisters and a husband. For that reason, I don’t enjoy my own company. Without the team and people here at Sunrise of Frognal I couldn’t have survived. They are all absolutely wonderful, just marvellous. I talk to everyone! Some people here are absolute characters – one lady who has been here two days, I’ve just met and she’s so great, we just chat away. It just feels like home. Life is for living, and that’s what we want everyone to do at Sunrise of Frognal. To find out more or to take a tour, call 020 3962 0600.

People and their needs, social transformation and foresight into emerging trends are Poggenpohl’s core values, bringing their exceptionally high standard to customers all over the world. Sometimes it is dominant and noble, while at times it retreats and integrates quietly into the events of living. Poggenpohl creates options for every lifestyle and independent person, utilising their years of experience to ensure the highest level of quality. 5 High-Concept Designs For Contemporary Homes Words: Anna Howell,
H
Chaplins Interior Editor
igh-concept design is about adventure, the search for new frontiers that can’t always be expressed with words. So why is it that so many of us play it safe with our interiors? At Chaplins, we’re often asked to help source a missing piece that will make a home extraordinary. From statement sofas through to stunning pendants, we’ve rounded up five of our favourite high-concept designs, each of which promises to add drama and style to contemporary homes. What does never-ending glory look like to you? Is it riches and fame? Success or happiness? For Jan Plechac and Henry Wielgus it’s the ability to move through time, recapturing passionate emotions through minimal design. Designed to emulate iconic chandeliers from five of the world’s most distinguished concert halls, the Neverending Glory collection takes Neoclassical splendour and reinterprets it for the modern age. Using traditional Czech glass-blowing techniques, each pendant spins a historic story while creating new emotions and memories in the eye of the beholder. As the classic becomes contemporary, Lasvit leaves just one question for design enthusiasts. Where will your lighting take you? De Sede’s DS600 is the only design on the list to occupy a position in the Guinness Book of World Records. Crowned the World’s Longest Sofa, its sinuous leather form snakes elegantly through open-plan residences, operating as both an architectural feature and elegant lounging system. Inspired by a mythical alpine creature, the Tatzelwurm, it can be used indoors or out to add comfort to contemporary spaces. Revered for their quirky, uncompromising designs, the Ella Dining Chair by Edra is a

watercolour brought to life. Designed by Jacopo Foggini, the black pedestal rises like a stem from the earth giving way to a corolla of multi-coloured petals. Available in opulent gold or stunning blue, Ella is a physical reminder to make art out of the everyday. For interior designers, the hallway is the business card of the house. And yet, the chance to make a powerful first impression is often overlooked. Enter Ligne Roset’s Geoffrey Mirror An oversized glamorous design; it riffs on the idea of a private butler. At once a decorative element and a handy storage solution, Geoffrey encourages you to keep track of important possessions via the stylish brass dish and metal rack. Equally useful as a bedroom clothes stand, its aesthetics of scale create a quirky design that’s a delight to look at and live with. It’s often said that lighting is the jewellery of the home. It’s an expression that comes to life in Michael Anastassiades award-winning Arrangements Pendant Light. Manufactured by the iconic Italian brand, Flos, Arrangements combines a variety of geometric light elements to great a glowing chain of light. Spectacular yet ethereal, these stunning pendants can be used to create dramatic constellations in modern homes. At Chaplins, we live and breathe contemporary design and are proud to showcase the world’s most exclusive brands to a UK audience. Flanked by fantastic restaurants, our 25,0002 ft showroom is your chance to get up close and personal with some of design’s hottest names, including Paola Lenti, Cassina, and Cattelan Italia. Why not pop by this April and bag yourself a designer steal in our annual Spring Promotion? Available online and in-store until the 12th May 2019. www.chaplins.co.uk

74 APRIL 2019
Bang & Olufsen has upgraded its truly wireless Beoplay E8 earbuds with a new model called the Beoplay E8 2.0. This amazing new version of the hero wire-free earbuds now come with even less wires. There’s now a brande new wireless charging option to go alongside the charging case and the earbuds themselves. This gives a true wireless operation as well as on top of this longer running times via a larger capacity charging case. The new Beoplay E8 2.0 offers a beautiful redesigned leather case that has been updated with support for wireless charging and a more ergonomic form, this case can be used to charge the E8 2.0 by placing the earbuds into the case, then placing the leather case onto a wireless charging mat. The model’s wireless charging case is now able to hold three complete charges, as well, which adds up to 16 total hours of audio playback before the charging case has to be recharged itself. This means users have four additional hours of audio playback from the charging case against the original E8 model. Best of British
Where can you find the best meat, fruit and shellfish in the country? Lauren Taylor asks chef James Martin for his recommendations
Langoustines: Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland “I first went to Strangford Lough about 15 years ago, and I wanted to go back. We pulled the langoustines out of these krill pots, and they were the size of bloody lobsters! Normally with langoustines, you cook them for about a minute and a half - these took four and a half minutes. The best langoustines you’ve ever tasted in your life. Langoustines used to be used for scampi back in the Seventies because they couldn’t sell it - now it’s a gourmet delicacy. The Ritz uses more langoustines than anybody in London I think, and buying each at £4 a piece. But they’re amazing - one of the true delights of seafood: Fresh langoustine, simply cooked, lemon mayonnaise, boom.”
Lamb: Orkney Islands, Scotland “That’s in a place called North Ronaldsay, absolutely amazing place. There are 50 people who live on the island and two pubs. It’s the only place in the British Isles where you can drive with no tax, no MOT, because there’s no garage. One farmer of a particular lamb there is also the lighthouse keeper, the air traffic controller, the mechanic. So to go up there and see it first-hand was amazing. It’s an amazing place, it’s another flight on from the main island on the Orkney mainland. It’s a beautiful part of the world - stunning.”
C
onsidering the amount of fresh produce we import from all over the world, you’d be forgiven for thinking Britain only farm’s a small variety of ingredients, but there’s more on our doorstep than you might realise. It’s something TV chef James Martin wants us all to discover, too. He’s just finished an ITV series travelling around the country to find the best food Britain has to offer, and has published an accompanying book, James Martin’s Great British Adventure, featuring 80 recipes using beautiful British ingredients. So where should we be travelling to in the UK to find the tastiest locally-grown ingredients? These are Martin’s top picks...
Beef: Ynyshir Restaurant and Rooms, mid-Wales “Head chef Gareth Ward uses Welsh beef, but he matures it in beef fat for 300 days - there’s a timer going in the kitchen so it can be tasted. You’ve got to go there and see it.”
Mussels: Lympstone Manor, Exmouth, England “Michael Caines is famous for being the head chef of a two star Michelin restaurant for 19 years [Gidleigh Park], but he’s just opened a place of his own, Lympstone Manor which sits on the River Exe, a brand new beautiful hotel overlooking the estuary. The mussel farmer [there] has got this unique thing that he’s built. It looks bloody odd, like a potato rumbler, in the sea. He goes out and dives for the mussels on the bed and the bottom of the seabed is like a farm, he’s got different fields mapped out. He basically harvests the mussels by putting this machine down and it rumbles the soft sand on the ground, and it pulls the mussels out, without them getting clogged in clay. It’s really clever (normally they do mussels on ropes) and because of that, the flavour is amazing.”
Halloumi cheese: Isle of Wight “Normally halloumi is quite rubbery - you can chuck it against a wall. Well this is amazing. 78 APRIL 2019
Normally it’s made out of sheep’s milk or goat’s milk, but this is made out of cow’s milk. And the colour is yellow - beautiful. The best butter and best feta is also made on the Isle of Wight.”
Gin: Snowdonia, Wales “[Forager’s Clogau Reserve Gin]. They produced it for Harry and Meghan’s wedding and make really small batches. One sold on eBay for £2,000! [It was available for £130 originally]. It uses botanicals from Snowdonia, but is one of the best gins you’ve ever tasted. In the UK now we’ve got millions of gins, all different flavours - but that’s the best.”
Raspberries: Strathmore, Scotland “The best raspberries definitely come from Scotland, without a shadow of a doubt - they’re the size of golf balls! They’re amazing, in this valley between Glasgow and Edinburgh. This valley is the warmest place in Scotland, so it produces the best raspberries in the world - and you wouldn’t think that.” James Martin’s Great British Adventure: A Celebration Of Great British Food With 80 Fabulous Recipes by James Martin is published by Quadrille, priced £25.
