What does it take to become a personal travel manager?
Founder of Winged Boots, David Ox, gives us in an insight into providing travel that’s out of the ordinary
24 MARCH 2019
“Winged Boots’ personal travel managers live and breathe the brand and give blood, sweat and tears to every booking”
Y
ou’ve spent hours scanning the web trying to find that ideal destination with your favourite cocktail on the hotel bar menu and you’ve given up. That’s where luxury travel specialist, Winged Boots, and its personal travel managers step in. However, forget waking up at eight for cornflakes to get to work for nine. Personalising holidays to every individual client’s wants and needs is not a ‘9-5’ job, as founder and managing director, David Ox, tells us… Originating from a black book of clients, Ox grew the business through providing great service to a small number of clients, who then referred their friends to him after appreciating the benefits of a bespoke experience. He now oversees the 20+ team and networks at a range of events to gain more customers: “A big part of my job is to find new clients and to also keep our existing ones happy, so I spend at least a couple of days a week in the city networking and following up on potential leads,” David says. “Certain people will only deal with me, so while the personal managers handle all the leads, I do still deal with some of the enquiries. No two enquiries, and no two days, are ever the same.” Another thing to put the personal travel managers under pressure? The average booking window for Winged Boots is only three months! Ox explains: “Winged Boots’ personal travel managers live and breathe the brand and give blood, sweat and tears to every booking. They’re looking after high net worth, demanding clients so these guys have to be on it 24/7. Our job is a lifestyle choice.” The calendar seems to expand at a quicker rate than places on your travel bucket list, with upcoming holidays and events in the interest of the company’s clients constantly being announced, so the personal travel managers must have their eye on the travel ball continuously. “The team have been busy organising all the flights for the recently announced Anthony Joshua fight in New York on the 1st June so there’s been lots of chopping and changing in the office of late,” David explains. Last minute bookings are how the team here roll. Along with a September wedding in Lake Como, business trips to South Africa and Orlando, and Christmas enquiries already trickling in, being a personal travel manager requires expert knowledge and a lot of juggling. However, it’s Winged Boots’ pledge of ‘going the extra mile’, which is what Ox says he is most proud of: “We’re willing to do what other agencies are not.
Whether it’s picking up the phone at 10pm on a Friday night to book a flight that departs at 9am the next day or trying to get complimentary upgrades or refunds where they’re due, we work around the clock fighting our clients’ corner.” You could be wondering by now how you haven’t come across Winged Boots before. Traditional advertising is a no-no here, and all the team’s efforts are drilled into the brand’s original concept lifestyle brochure magazine and events programme, which gives customers a little something extra. “We offer our clients tickets to shows at the O2 arena and host private dinners in London. We organised our first golf day in summer 2018 which was a massive success, so we’re constantly inviting our clients to interesting new events and networking with them,” Ox says. The final question is what are the rewards of the job? “I think it’s 70% enjoyable, 20% stressful and 10% completely unknown - but what job isn’t!” laughs Ox.
THE DETAILS To discover more about Winged Boots visit www.wingedboots. co.uk and to submit an enquiry call the team of friendly personal travel agents on 0203 319 4404. Fully bonded by ATOL and the TTA, every trip is protected and will be precisely planned to your bespoke request. Call today for your free, no obligatory, quote.

ST CHRISTOPHER’S FUN WALK
S
t Christopher’s Fun Walk on 19 May 2019 is the biggest fundraising day of the year for [Bromley’s] local hospice, and, by taking part, walkers will help to keep essential services running and freely available for local families in South East London when they need it most. The walk through Keston, Kent and its surrounding countryside is a life-enhancing day out and an infectiously positive communal experience. Many people enjoy taking part year after year, and come in fancy dress or customised t-shirts remembering someone special. “The Fun Walk is just wonderful,” says Sam Packham, 48. “We walked the 11 mile route last time and when we needed to cross any roads, passing drivers tooted their horns to encourage us and support us along, and it felt like a great thing to be doing for such an important cause. We know first-hand what a difference the hospice makes to families.” Sam’s dad, Geoffrey Rye, died at the hospice in 2005 aged 67, after a brief two week stay. Sam, from Bromley, and her friends and family, have now walked the Fun Walk a spectacular six times, and raised hundreds of pounds for the hospice. “I remember sitting with my dad one day on the ward, holding his hand. One of the nurses came in and rearranged his pillows and made him more comfortable in the bed, and then on the way out, seeing that I was upset, she just gave me a comforting rub on my shoulder. It was a small thing, but for me, it was so kind and it made me feel that I wasn’t on my own. That’s why we do the Fun Walk every year. “I’ve got lots of friends involved in the Fun Walk too, because even if you haven’t had close contact with the hospice, everyone seems to know someone whose life has been touched and helped by St Christopher’s,” reflects Sam. The Fun Walk starts and finishes at Keston Common in Kent on 19 May 2019 and meanders through some of Kent’s prettiest countryside. Walkers can choose their sponsored route with

O
n 6th April 2019, the V&A will open the first international retrospective on the iconic fashion designer Dame Mary Quant. The exhibition will explore the years between 1955 and 1975, when Quant revolutionised the high street, harnessing the youthful spirit of the sixties and new mass production techniques to create a new look for women. Quant personified the energy and fun of swinging London; and was a powerful role model for the working woman. She popularised the miniskirt, colourful tights, and tailored trousers – encouraging a new age of feminism. The mini skirt would go on to become an icon of the time and spark a new creative scene in London and beyond. Receiving unprecedented access to Dame Mary Quant’s Archive, which include the largest public collection of Quant garments in the world, the show will bring together over 120 garments as well as accessories, cosmetics, sketches and photographs - the majority of which have never been on display before. In June 2018, the V&A Museum launched a call-out to the public to track down rare Quant garments from around the country. Receiving over 800 responses, 35 objects were selected alongside personal stories from the owners and photographs of the women wearing their beloved Quant clothes. These have transformed the exhibition narrative, uncovering rare examples such as a very early and unlabelled blouse, a hat sold at Bazaar, and colourful PVC raincoats. The beginning of the exhibition will set the scene

of post-war London for the opening of Quant’s experimental shop Bazaar, on Chelsea’s King’s Road in 1955. It will show how her designs, often based on schoolgirl pinafores or masculine tailoring, brought an entertaining slant to fashion, soon noticed by fashion editors and newspaper journalists in the burgeoning media of the day. Inspiring young women to rebel against traditional dress, Quant’s tiny boutique on the King’s Road grew into a wholesale brand available in department stores across the UK and her designs made for chain stores and mail order companies in America. Quant quickly became the woman that made fashion less exclusive and more accessible to a new generation. Dame Mary Quant said: “The V&A is such a precious and iconic organisation for which I have the utmost admiration and respect, and it is a huge honour to be recognised by them. It was a wonderfully exciting time and despite the frenetic, hard work we had enormous fun. We didn’t necessarily realise that what we were creating was pioneering, we were simply too busy relishing all the opportunities and embracing the results before rushing on to the next challenge! Friends have been extremely generous in loaning, and in many cases, donating garments and accessories to the V&A which they have lovingly cherished for many years. I am enormously grateful to so many talented people whose contribution to that ground-breaking, revolutionary and memorable era will also be recognised.”

The TV series was such a fantastic and enlightening show and has really empowered society to view our oceans and environment with a great deal more care. They spent 6,000 hours deep-sea diving, 1,000 of which were on underwater boats. Logistically, some of these expeditions could be compared to a trip into space – such was the effort. In the process, the camera teams encountered creatures that appeared so strange that they really did seem to come from a different planet!

HOW TO FIND THE PERFECT CARE HOME
What should you look for when When is the ‘right’ time to choosing a care home for a loved one? consider care?
Finding the right care home can be a daunting experience so we spoke to Paul Hart, the manager at Emerson Grange Care Home in Hextable, Kent, to get his view. Having nearly 20 years’ experience in the care industry, Paul discusses the key areas to consider when selecting short or long term residential, nursing or dementia care. 42 MARCH 2019
‘Care’ is key - select an environment in which your loved one will be looked after by experienced, caring individuals where there is a positive and friendly atmosphere. I recommend you visit a prospective home without an appointment to see what day-to-day life is really like although you do run the risk of not being able to have all your questions answered. When visiting, the environment should be clean and warm and interaction between the team and the people living at the home is natural and caring. Facilities are important and at Emerson Grange we are very fortunate that we have a wealth of amenities such as a cinema, café bar, hair and nail salon, a selection of lounges and even a fitness room for the residents to enjoy. Our dedicated activities and events team ensure there is always plenty going on so always ask to see the social calendar. As I said, care is key so find out what care is available to ensure the home can look after your loved one now and in the future. It’s also important that you read the CQC report which will give you information about the care that is delivered in the home. I would also advise looking at the website carehome.co.uk which gives you independent reviews from families and visitors to the home.
The time to consider choosing a care home will be different for everyone. It may be that your loved one is finding it increasingly difficult to live alone or is struggling following hospital admission after a fall or surgery. People need care at different stages and here at Emerson Grange we can offer respite breaks as well as longer term stays to suit people’s circumstances and care needs.
How do you differ from competitors?
Emerson Grange is part of the exclusive Emerson Park Retirement Village and I can honestly say that nothing compares to the quality, finish and standards provided. The care home, Emerson Grange, really is on a completely different level and I believe sets the benchmark for care homes in the area. However, the most important part of any care home is the team and I have worked tirelessly to ensure we have the best people. Together with the state-of-the-art facilities in homely surroundings our aim is to provide exemplary standards of residential, nursing and dementia care. Did you know that a number of foods are linked with reduced inflammation? Liz Connor rounds up five to add to the menu now.
J
oint pain can occur at any time of the year, but some people find it can particularly flare up when the weather is cold. Some studies have suggested that this because when temperatures dip, our body prioritises supplying vital organs like the heart, which restricts how much blood it sends to our hands and feet. As a result, researchers have theorised that the tissues around the joints become less pliable, so joints can feel tighter and more uncomfortable than usual. Joint pain can occur for a range of reasons, of course, including osteoarthritis, which affects millions of Brits to some extent or other. While there’s no magic recipe to take arthritis away, there is evidence that diet - and certain foods in particular - could play a role in helping fight inflammation and joint pain (alongside tailored professional advice from your doctor and medication if required). Wondering which foods might help keep winter joint pain at bay? Here are some foods that have been linked with joint health...
Fatty fish Fatty and oily fish - like salmon, trout and mackerel - are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which studies have found can help fight inflammation associated with arthritis pain. It’s thought that marine fatty acids like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) can reduce the production of immune cells called leukocytes and enzymes known as cytokines, which are both important components in the body’s inflammatory response. Experts generally recommend at least three to four ounces of fish, twice a week, to reap the joint-friendly benefits.
Garlic As well as being a delicious base for soups, sauces or a tasty stir-fry, studies have shown that people who regularly eat foods from the allium family enjoy fewer signs of osteoarthritis, the most common chronic joint condition in the UK. Garlic, like onions and leeks, contains diallyl disulfide - an antiinflammatory compound that can limit the effects of cytokines. Top tip: Plump for fresh garlic, as the 46 MARCH 2019
preservatives in bottled garlic may effect some of its benefits.
“Studies have shown that people who regularly eat foods from the allium family enjoy fewer signs of osteoarthritis”
Ginger As well as being used to soothe an upset stomach, a daily slice of fresh ginger may also help ease the symptoms of arthritis. One 2001 study assessed how 261 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee responded to taking a capsule of ginger extract, twice a day. After six weeks, 63% reported improvements in their discomfort levels. This aromatic spice can be used to add zest to cooking, enjoyed fresh or brewed in tea. If you’re not fond of the taste, you can find it in supplement form too.
Walnuts Walnuts are one of the most versatile nuts going you can sprinkle them on salads, toss them into a noodle dish, or simply enjoy them as a mid-morning snack. These hardy nuts are great for joints as they’re high in alpha linoleic acid (ALA), a type of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acid which plays a role in keeping inflammation under control.
Berries Who can resist a bowl of berries with a dollop of yogurt in the morning? As well as being naturally low in calories, this simple breakfast dish may also have some powerful benefits for joints - as well as your health in general. Berries such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are loaded with antioxidants, which researchers have found can protect your body against inflammation and free radicals - unstable molecules that can damage cells and organs - and may be associated with lower levels of inflammation. Take advantage of seasons fresh berries (although you can also buy them frozen), and if you have a garden, why not giving growing your own a go?

e all want to feel good about ourselves however sometimes life gets the better of us. This can be in the form of grief from the death of a loved one, stress due to money worries, family etc, or anxiety which can affect our social lives. Our modern way of living can cause people to feel overwhelmed and not be accepted in society and so have little or no self-esteem and feel vulnerable and frightened of life. How we cope with these can vary. Some will just manage to just get on with their lives, others may get help from family or friends. However, there are some that will require professional help, to listen and help them move forward. Psychotherapy and hypnotherapy can be very helpful, in helping those that are unable and those able, to move through a therapeutic process that will enable them to be and feel better about themselves. Country meets contemporary in this real Neptune kitchen Step in to the beam-laden kitchen of a rather well-known musician and his family, not far from Tunbridge Wells…
E
very kitchen created by British interiors brand Neptune is an individual. There’s nothing off-the-shelf about their approach to kitchen design. They have four, traditionally-made, timeless timber kitchen collections, but how you chose to put your own stamp on them is entirely up to you. To help you picture how a Neptune kitchen might fit into your home, each month on their online journal, they feature the real homes that have welcomed one in. It’s a way to see how other people have designed, styled and made a Neptune kitchen their own. Including this one, designed by the team at their Tonbridge store, that proves the Chichester collection can carry off polished, contemporary style as much as classic country…
Home profile This Chichester kitchen is living amongst a very famous face in the world of house music. Nathan Duvall is one of the three members of the band Disciples (he had just returned home from a world tour when Neptune arrived for their photoshoot). 52 MARCH 2019
While Nathan is busy making music, his wife, Leoni runs her own hamper business called Lou’s of London where she brings together personal shopping and hamper gifting. And then there’s their 12-year old, football-obsessed son, Casey. This creative household moved from Surrey to their 17th century listed barn in Kent, which was a working farm until only four years ago. It had already been converted into a home when they bought the property, but they’ve since completely reconfigured the layout and redesigned the interior. And it all started with their Neptune kitchen.
The project Leoni knew all about Neptune well before she started designing her dream kitchen; she would often pop into Neptune Wimbledon on trips to London. When it came to deciding on her own one, they pinged to mind and into Neptune Wimbledon she went. “Before we’d even moved in, I knew I’d want to start by sorting out the kitchen. Nathan took some persuading, surprise surprise, but I dragged him along and took him to the Wimbledon
“This Chichester kitchen is living amongst a very famous face in the world of house music”
Life in their new kitchen What’s your favourite thing to do in your new kitchen? “Nathan says my favourite thing to do is clean. That’s partly true, but only because I love it so much! In all seriousness, I love Nathan making breakfast in it. He’s the breakfast king. It’s all he can do though if I’m honest. We also just love standing together and looking at our kitchen too – I’m not even joking!” store so he could see why I was obsessed!” Leoni told us. They started by buying Neptune’s Seaton flagstone flooring. “That’s where it all began,” she laughed. “Then we nipped back a few more times. I thought I’d wear him down gradually. We had our complimentary design consultation and quote, but the team actually suggested we speak to the designers at Neptune Tonbridge because it would be our closest store when we moved, which was nice of them. We were wowed with it when we went. It’s huge!” By this point, Leoni and Nathan
had almost settled on the Chichester kitchen and, with the help of Ellie, their kitchen designer from Neptune Tonbridge, they decided to stick with the collection they had loved from the start. “Chichester definitely stood out to me the most. I loved the light and bright colour. It made the space seem bigger but wasn’t too clinical and I liked that it had a bit of a traditional character to it.”
“With the Chichester collection decided, the design of their new kitchen really got underway” With the Chichester collection decided, the design of their new kitchen really got underway. Like most people, Leoni had more than one or two things on her wishlist. “I wanted an island with a big Belfast sink in the middle and I loved the Everhot cookers I’d seen in the Neptune stores. Nathan wanted an American fridge with one of those water dispensers and we both wanted a wine fridge and lots and lots of storage. We have all of that – it’s hard to say it without smiling – and more storage than I could’ve ever imagined. We’ve got a larder, huge drawers, little drawers, corner carousel cabinets. I know where everything is and I can get to it all so easily,” Leoni continued. Leoni found the design process smooth and bump-free and gave high praise to Ellie, especially for how she was able to develop their ideas further and add things to the design that they might not have otherwise done. “Ellie suggested a breakfast pantry area a bit like what Neptune’s Suffolk and Henley kitchen collections can have with their bifold doors. She made that work in Chichester for us. Nathan wanted to add a cooker hood too but it wasn’t easy to do. Ellie figured it out though and it makes the room feel so cosy. I honestly couldn’t fault Neptune in any way. The communication was excellent and the whole process was incredibly smooth. Even down to the tiniest detail, like how they gave us extra touch-up pots of paint because they knew how, with Casey around, there would always be a ball in sight threatening my lovely Shell-coloured cabinets! I thought that was a really considerate touch that just summed up the whole experience for us.”
What’s your favourite part? “The hot Quooker tap. It’s seriously a wow factor for our guests – it’s become part of our act. Everyone finds it amazing.” What could you now not live without? “The wine fridge. Let’s just say it gets very good use. That, and everything really. It’s all used and appreciated. Having the double sink is a huge help too. I literally can’t pick one thing, it’s too hard.”
In each one of Neptune’s stores – including their Tonbridge home – are their expert kitchen designers, there to listen to all your wants and wishes, and help you create a kitchen that feels most like you. KITCHEN GUIDE
Shake up your home with a shaker kitchen T
By Adrian Stoneham,
he shaker style kitchen has stood the test of time. Although classic in its form, the versatility of shaker kitchens means they can deliver traditional character or a more modern, contemporary finish, that suits any era of property. A shaker kitchen is characterised by its in-frame construction and classically proportioned doors which stem from the long-standing values of the Shakers of the 18th century. In this article we take a step back in time to see where it all began and how shaker kitchens are being incorporated into 21st century houses.
The shaker legacy Shakers, often referred to as The United Society of Believers were a religious sect from Manchester, who emigrated to America in the 18th century. 54 MARCH 2019
Managing Director at Stoneham Kitchens
They believed that life should follow principles of honesty, utility and simplicity which was reflected in everything they did – including the furniture they made. Their designs were functional and minimal – they believed that decoration was unnecessary. The Shaker saying ‘Whatever is fashioned, let it be plain and simple and for the good’ is mirrored in their work. They also believed that the quality of their work was a testament to God, which meant that everything they made was made to the utmost perfection. To this day, shaker kitchens have stayed true to the Shakers values, built with lasting quality craftsmanship and finesse.
Keeping it natural Shaker kitchens are traditionally made from wood and ideally should be left natural to showcase the
“Shakers believed that life should follow principles of honesty, utility and simplicity”
grains. Withstanding the whims of fashion, wooden shaker kitchens will continue to bring style, function and value to the home for many years. Wood is a durable, useful and beautiful material that continues to look great as it ages and with unique grain patterns, each kitchen is different and special.
Shake up the shades For a modern shaker look, mix colours so that the base units and wall units are the complete opposite. Team bold tones such as dark greys, greens or blues against lighter shades of white for a contrasting finish. If you have space for a kitchen island, go for a dark colour with a light worktop and light cabinets for the rest of the kitchen – this will make the kitchen island stand out as a key focal point in the room. Choosing a two-tone effect like this is the perfect way to create impact and interest to your kitchen design.
Go bold To create a statement kitchen choose your favourite colour across all your shaker cabinets. Dark blues have become particularly popular and looks luxurious paired with gold or brass handles. At Stoneham we offer a wide choice of shades from our standard colour palette or we can create a bespoke hue to suit your taste or to match a specific item, like a range cooker or fridge/freezer.
Handling it differently Shakers kitchens are generally adorned with chrome or brass handles, however its limitless appeal means there are other options too. Keeping the in-frame structure, integrate recessed finger pulls to create an
elegant, contemporary classic design.
Show and tell
“To create a statement kitchen choose your favourite colour across all your shaker cabinets”
Open shelving is often a popular choice with shaker kitchens, and it is a great way to show off your bits and bobs. Depending on the items on display, this look can either be very charming or very modern in style. If you don’t fancy dusting the items regularly, then you might prefer glass-fronted cupboards, which also suits shaker kitchens down to a tee. This gives the same feel from open shelves, but with the benefit of keeping your best china free from dirt and sparkling from behind the glaze.
Small but significant detail The small touches can make a big difference in kitchen design. Personalised wooden chopping boards or wooden tray space units built into islands or the main cabinets can add a unique touch while blending in beautifully with shaker doors. Another design idea that we have started to see incorporated in shaker kitchen designs is around the chimney breasts where it surrounds the hob area. Glass shelving into the sides with colour in the back panel provides a modern addition to a more traditional surrounding. A true classic that has never dated, Shaker kitchens can be used to create both a traditional or modern kitchen design. Today, shaker kitchens are a popular choice for the contemporary home and with simple changes to colour, adornments and unique features, a traditional style can be instantly transformed. www.stoneham-kitchens.co.uk. 020 8300 8181. chmidt proudly presents the “Vertical Home”, a new concept with our distinctive hallmark. It illustrates how nothing is too much trouble when it comes to challenges for ultra-personalised home living projects. To show our commitment to our customers, no matter how far-fetched their dream, we set ourselves an extraordinary challenge: to design a kitchen and wardrobe for an exceptionally demanding customer - the world-renowned mountaineer Kenton Cool. The twist was, we did not install these at his home in England but on the side of a mountain at an altitude of nearly 2,000 metres. And we succeeded with no compromises! Absolute proof of Schmidt’s expertise. This technical and artistic feat is at the heart of our latest communication campaign: a dizzying 8-episode web documentary showing how we take customer service to new extremes. A project that is completely extraordinary, which illustrates our new brand signature “Because you are special”. Ever since 1959, our customers have been looking for perfection and personalisation. Whether the task is to install a wardrobe under an unpromising sloping roof, a functioning kitchen in a space the size of a pocket handkerchief or a bookcase that can house a huge collection, Schmidt

is able to rise to the challenge! This high-altitude adventure is simply a more extreme version of what we do every day at Schmidt for our customers.
A dizzying communication concept Appearing from nowhere, in the vastness of the blue Alpine skies, a helicopter tows a Schmidt kitchen and wardrobe along the rocky cliffs of Le Parmelan, in the Alps. The challenge seems insane! Schmidt has risen to it for its new “Vertical Home” concept thanks to the high-precision expertise of its specialists. Kenton Cool, the famous English mountaineer, is the hero of this high-altitude exploit. Steeped in good humour, this adventurer, who is no stranger to extreme conditions, does just what he does in his everyday life. Just as if he were at home, Kenton goes from the kitchen to the wardrobe, but at an altitude of nearly 2,000 metres! Everything seems simple for this athlete who is used to climbing the highest peaks. And while this dizzying image of the “Vertical Home” campaign cannot fail to make its mark on viewers, the Schmidt team itself will also never forget this stunning experience. Beyond the stress of a last-minute change of filming location and anxiety about the inclement weather that was forecast, their greatest memories will be of this extraordinary human adventure and of Kenton making them scrambled eggs while gazing down into empty space! The filming activities have left no trace on this incomparable natural site. The environment lies at the heart of the Schmidt philosophy and the mountain has been left completely undisturbed.

New from Freelands Tiles
Freelands Tiles of Dunton Green are excited to launch a new collection of Porcelain Tiles.
I
nside-Out is a premium range of co-ordinating indoor and outdoor porcelain tiles. Creating a seamless transition from inside your home to your outdoor space, Inside-Out will extend your living area into your garden. This slip-resistant range of tiles features a 20mm frost-resistant outdoor porcelain, and matching 10mm indoor porcelain. Available to order in a wide range of colours, InsideOut will transform your home, creating a stylish interior and co-ordinated outdoor setting.
A SEAMLESS TRANSITION FROM INDOORS TO OUT • Ideal for both internal and external installations, providing a tangible benefit over most natural stone products that tend to be suitable only for internal and external use, but rarely both. • The 10mm tile is designed for internal use and is slip resistant, attractive and easy to clean. • The 20mm external product co-ordinates perfectly, and has an added HD slip-resistant surface making it perfect for a wide range of outdoor settings.
LOW POROSITY, FROST & STAINRESISTANT • The Inside-Out range will not be damaged by frost, is highly stain-resistant and will not discolour due to algae. This is due to the process in which the product is made that ensures it does not absorb water. • In contrast, natural stone is very porous and needs to be regularly sealed to prevent staining and to reduce the risk of algae discolouration. 62 MARCH 2019
LOW MAINTAINANCE
• Inside-Out Tiles are 100% colourfast, even after decades under the sun, and it does not change colour when wet. • The product requires little maintenance and is second only to diamond in hardness. It is extremely resistant to scratching. • Inside–Out Tiles are manufactured from raw materials in a process that uses recycled raw materials. The tiles have a very low whole life environmental cost.
STRONG & HARD WEARING • Inside-Out porcelain tiles are incredibly strong which means the 20mm outdoor tiles can be laid directly onto stone pedestals, speeding up the laying process and reducing the installation costs. • The tiles can even be used on driveways when installed onto a solid base using a suitable tile adhesive.
EASY TO LAY • The 20mm outdoor tiles can also be laid onto pedestals, making the tiles ideal for use on roof terraces and balconies. • The 10mm internal tile can be laid in a standard manner with tile adhesive. Please visit our showroom to see the range for yourself. We have lots of different sizes and styles on display to help you choose which product is right for you. Generally the Inside-Out tiles are available on a 2 week lead time. We offer a free delivery service on the product and we are open 7 days a week including 10-2 on Sundays.

n most cases, the splash back in a kitchen comprise of ceramic or porcelain tiles but there’s no hard and fast rules as to what size or style you should use. So long as long as they are hard wearing and easy to keep clean, and off course complement your kitchen design style One of the most popular style of tiles for splashbacks are metro or subway tiles thanks to their timeless design, and the fact that they are available in a large of colours and designs. Stone effect ceramic tiles are also very popular and offer a maintenance free alternative natural stone. The only limit to your creativity when choosing splashback tiles is your imagination! Get Spring Clean With Statement Storage
T
here’s an old adage that always seems to circulate at this time of year. And whether it was a housewife or Zen philosopher who coined it first, there’s no denying the truth of the matter. A tidy house is a tidy mind and in 2019, we’re leaving the clutter behind. Before you start eye rolling at the spring clean cliché, we’d ask you to hear us out for a moment. While one of our pet peeves will always be clutter, contemporary storage is about more than just hiding things away. Done right, it can add architectural intrigue to lacklustre spaces. Let us show you how…
Make A Perfect First Impression They say you never get a second chance at a first impression. With these striking hall accessories you won’t need one. From Ligne Roset’s Clara Coat Rack to Porada’s floating Bayus Drawers, each of these functional designs does a lot with a little. So no matter how big your hallway, you can afford to introduce a little style this season.
Use Modern Bookcases as Room Dividers For many interior designers, a modern bookcase presents the opportunity to introduce clean lines into open space. In doing so, you partition the room, gifting privacy while doubling the number of ambients in which to relax. Some of our favourite examples in recent years include B&B Italia’s Jack and Cappellini’s Cloud Bookcase. The former adds a Crittal-style window effect while the latter a whimsical sense of escapism. Fancy something
more minimal? Molteni & C’s Graduate Wall System should do the trick.
Make A Design Statement With A Modern Sideboard Contemporary sideboards are the design equivalent of a stunning soundtrack. While usually regulated to a supporting role, the right one can easily become a focal point. If it’s glamour you’re after, then you’ll want to pay attention to Cattelan Italia’s stylish ceramic sideboards. For the best in glass it’s Fiam, while beautiful wood sideboards will always take pride of place at Porada. Whichever you choose, each packs a serious style punch, while keeping track of your most precious china.
Discover Off The Wall Style If you missed out on David Hockney’s record-breaking auction, fear not, there’s another way to deck your walls this season. Modular wall units are one of our favourite methods for transforming empty walls into stunning works of art. Ranging in size and price from Cassina’s thermoplastic Baleno shelves through to Laurameroni’s glamorous 40/40 system, they’re a practical luxury that adds interest to any space.
Get Acquainted With Our Hosting Heros Our stylish bar accessories are designed to be your partner in crime when it comes to hosting family and friends. From innovative wine racks through to all-singing-and-dancing bar cabinets, they’re your go-to for good times in 2019. Feeling spoilt for choice? Lightweights will love Gallotti & Radice’s Riki Bar Trolley while the more seasoned boozers will take great pleasure in Maxalto’s Alcor Drinks Cabinet.
Bottoms up! There are many reasons our clients choose to visit us in store. As a one-stop-shop for some of Europe’s leading furniture and lighting brands, we offer a unique opportunity to see some of the world’s most exciting designs up-close. It’s also the base for our friendly design team, so if you need a little help planning your living space, why not pop by or make an appointment? SHINE BRIGHT Is your home looking a little lacklustre? Gabrielle Fagan reveals how to hit refresh
homes. The colour’s associated with energy and optimism - we could all do with a dose of that this year - and you can easily play with all its hues, from bright daffodil yellow, through to the palest lemon. This is also a shade that works well in bold contrast, or blended with similar shades and tones - don’t be afraid to experiment. Another bonus: Pops of yellow will act like beams of sunshine in any room, no matter what the weather’s like outside.

f your rooms are look as though they’re suffering a bit of a winter hangover, take heart, as there are plenty of bright, new decor trends on the horizon to welcome spring. You don’t need to rush out and arrange a major revamp - some little touches can be enough to lift a space and provide that all-important refresh. Here are six decor trends that will make a big impression on rooms this year, and could help banish the blues and take your home from drab to fab in no time...
Tell a texture story If you want to give a scheme some ‘wow’ factor, look no further than texture. Layering a mixture of soft fabrics - from fluffy sheepskin cushions and chunky wool throws to cowhide rugs - will not only draw the eye, which is essential in a muted scheme decorated in neutrals that could otherwise look bland, but also add cosiness. Adding texture is all about layering, so have a few key pieces, like a statement rug, a velvet chair, or a leather sofa, and then add smaller accessories and soft furnishings until the room feels complete. Don’t forget that your scheme need never be ‘set in stone’. Moving or replacing a few texture-rich accessories is an easy way to re-energise and refresh the whole balance of a scheme.
Make it mellow yellow Yellow has crossed over from the fashion catwalks the colour was big news at the 2019 spring/summer shows - and is predicted to make its mark on our
Fringing - think the swishy, flamboyant Charleston dresses of the 1920s - is making a comeback in decor and home styling. You can interpret it elegantly and traditionally, with upholstery fringing on armchairs and sofas, or go for an ethnic, arty vibe with a colourful tribal wall hanging. However you use it, fringing is fabulous.
Touch wood Natural materials, particularly wood, are essential for today’s stylish homes. It’s all about celebrating the beauty of natural materials and craftsmanship think heirlooms and sustainability - and the unique grain of timber. Don’t limit yourself to one piece. The chic take on the trend is to choose furniture made in different tones of wood, from pale ash to ebony, and let is share a space. Leave it raw and unstained to reveal the gorgeous imperfections of the knots and grain.
Let red rule Let the warmest shades on the colour spectrum rust, red and rose - warm your rooms (it’s cheaper than turning up the central heating!). Our newfound boldness with colour means we’re less timid and more prepared to splash on those bright shades these days - but even used sparingly, these shades will make an impact without being too dominating, especially if you lean towards the brown-based terracotta hues. Experiment with bed linen and accessories to test your enthusiasm, or paint a headboard or feature wall if you want to make a statement. Seeing red can be positive!
Mio Scandi Knitted Cushion, £42, Eclect Design
Pay a floral tribute Nature’s finding its way into more and more interiors, and flowers, potted plants and succulents - both real and faux - are an easy way to bring natural appeal to rooms. Displaying bouquets in clear glass vases can have a transformative effect on a space. As a transparent vase displays all of its contents, the possibilities for decorative ideas extend beyond flowers, and you could use them for fruit or collections of beachcomber finds too. Change the atmosphere with blooms - a fresh cut bunch from a garden will enhance a country/rustic effect, while an elaborate display of exotic blooms makes a luxe touch.

THE WORLD RESTAURANT AWARDS
2019 WINNERS
It’s the awards’ inaugural year - and there’s not a stuffy category in sight
I
f you’re bored of the usual food-award accolades, like ‘Chef of the Year’, and the bestowing of stars, as designated by a tyre manufacturer, the new World Restaurant Awards are hoping to shake things up. The aim of the founders - including Joe Warwick, who co-founded The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list - is to “celebrate restaurants as culture, considered in the same way as film, art and music”. This means acknowledging restaurants for the likes of atmosphere and their house special, or for having the most captivating Instagram account. So, here’s what you need to know about the big winners
Wolfgat, South Africa Claiming both the Off-Map Destination and Restaurant of the Year awards, rustic Wolfgat is the work of chef Kobus van der Merwe - and is pretty spectacular for its view (it’s right on the edge of the ocean) and its history (the whitewashed restaurant dates back 130 years, and on the land, there’s a cave “of immense archaeological and geological significance”). The food is seasonal and in the form of a seven-course tasting menu - plus, you’ll find plants from nearby rock pools on your plate.
Paradiso X Gortnanain, Ireland Vegetarian restaurant Paradiso is run by chef Denis Cotter in Cork City, and it’s been noted for its work and friendship with Gortnanain Farm, headed up by Ultan Walsh - together they won Collaboration of the Year. They really love their veg.
Le Clarence, France Creativity and artistic expression are championed by the Original Thinking award, nabbed by Le Clarence, a restaurant in a 19th century Parisian townhouse that hopes to transport you to the Age
of Enlightenment as you walk through the doors. When it comes to the food, chef Christophe Pele takes French classics and - so we’re told makes them “audacious, modern and devilishly seductive”.
Lido 84, Italy A cheesy, peppery pasta dish should be pretty straightforward, but cacio e pepe can easily make or break a restaurant. Fortunately for Lido 84, perched on Lake Garda, and chef Riccardo Camanini, they’ve nailed it. Theirs, which is cooked inside a pig’s bladder, won the House Special award.
Refettorio (Food for Soul) Lara Gilmore and her husband, chef Massimo Bottura launched non-profit organisation Food For Soul in 2016 “to empower communities to fight food waste through social inclusion”. They were awarded the Ethical Thinking accolade for their ‘Refettorios’ - or community kitchens - set up in disused spaces for people to cook with surplus food supplies, and eat together.
“Cacio e pepe can easily make or break a restaurant”
Vespertine, USA Californian restaurant Vespertine is more a live art experience than a quick dinner out, hence why it’s won the award for Atmosphere. Described as an “immersive, multi-sensory event”, dining here involves entering the culinary mind of chef Jordan Kahn, and a four-story warped tower - it’s all very sci-fi. Meanwhile, in the smaller, more frivolous ‘Small Plate’ category, six awards were handed out, including... Bo.lan, Thailand was hailed for having a tweezer-free kitchen; Alain Ducasse won the tattoo-free chef award; Noble Rot, London nabbed the Red-Wine Serving Restaurant, and Alain Passard nabbed best Instagram account (@alain_passard), perhaps for his jaunty poses. 78 MARCH 2019

o celebrate the arrival of the much anticipated Dior exhibition to London, this season’s Prêt-à-Portea at The Berkeley sees the iconic designs of the House of Dior take to the cake stand for an unprecedented solo show inspired by “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams” at the V&A museum. Working exclusively with Dior, this fashionista favourite adds an innovative twist to the traditional afternoon tea, and sees legendary Dior designs translated into creatively crafted cakes and patisserie. Headlining this season’s Couture Prêt-à-Portea is the Bar Suit, synonymous with Dior since it first took to the catwalk in 1947 as part of Christian Dior’s debut collection. Celebrated as the New Look, it becomes a rich chocolate biscuit embellished with cream royal icing. The collection also includes a red velvet cake inspired by the Lady Dior Handbag which shot to fame in 1995 when France’s first lady, Bernadette Chirac gifted it to Princess Diana, to a bottle of Miss Dior Eau de Parfum inspired by the designer’s own sister, Catherine, reimagined as a lychee and raspberry cake glazed with shimmering pink icing, complete with signature oversized silver bow. Christian Dior’s 1954 Muguet dress, inspired and named after his favourite lily-of-the-valley blooms into a delicate pavlova topped with coconut marshmallow and a white sugar bow. And finally, an edible homage in celebration of the imminent return of sling back season, Dior’s J’Adior shoe from the current collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri strides on to the cake stand as a vanilla biscuit with royal icing finished with its inscription bow in edible sugar ribbon. The Berkeley’s Pastry Chef Mourad Khiat comments “It was important for me to respectfully emulate Monsieur Dior’s timeless and iconic fairytale gowns using ingredients that best celebrate these opulent and beautiful creations. Seeing the exquisite garments displayed in real life at the V&A really makes me appreciate the detail and precision that goes into these ingenious designs.” Prêt-à-Portea – The Dior Couture collection is served in the Collins Room at The Berkeley from 1pm - 5.30pm every day priced at £58 per person; £68 including a glass of Laurent Perrier champagne, or £74 per person including a glass of rosé champagne.
