The Covenant House of California Gala PHOTOGRAPHY: Boivin Photographe

T

his spring, the Covenant House of California’s annual gala brought Hollywood philanthropists together for a night at The Globe Theater at Universal Studios Hollywood. Honoring Delta Air Lines, the event helped raise funds and awareness for the thousands of homeless and trafficked youth that Covenant House of California aids each year. Emcees, Graham Patrick Martin, from TNT’s Major Crimes, and Diana Perkovic, led the program for the night. The evening’s speakers included Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles City Councilmember of the 13th district, Mitch O’Farrell, and Anthony E. Zuiker the creator of CSI. President and CEO of Covenant House California, Bill Bedrossian spoke about the future of the organization, as it plans to greatly expand facilities and services to increase the opportunities their youth have to succeed in their futures. The evening progressed while the celebrities including TNT’s Major Crimes and Into The Badlands watched as awards were presented to deserving individuals who have made a difference for Covenant House’s homeless youth. Covenant House of California is a non-profit organization with locations in Hollywood, CA, Oakland, CA and Berkeley, CA whose mission is to help homeless and trafficked youth by providing shelter and sanctuary for those who have nowhere to go.

ABOUT COVENANT HOUSE:

Covenant House California (CHC) is a non-profit youth shelter with locations in Hollywood, Oakland and Berkeley that provides sanctuary and support for homeless and trafficked youth, ages 1824. CHC believes that no young person deserves to be homeless; that every young person in California deserves shelter, food, clothing, education … and most importantly, to be loved. Now serving over 1,800 youth a year, CHC has served nearly 190,000 homeless youth since we’ve opened our doors. CHC provides a full continuum of services to meet the physical, emotional, educational, vocational, and spiritual well-being of young people, in order to provide them with the best chance for success in independence. 18 JUNE 2017

gala coverage:

L

os Angeles is the home of the largest number of homeless youth in the United States. The Covenant House is the largest privately-funded institution that provides services to homeless youth. Every year the Covenant House of California throws what is one of the county’s most attended Galas to raise funds and grant a voice to those whose cries often go unanswered. This year, the Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, attended and spoke about the current attack on sanctuary cities and how best to rehabilitate the homeless. Addressing the issue of homeless youth in Los Angeles is of particular importance, not only in reducing the amount of long-term homeless people but also because one-fourth of homeless youth became so as the result of coming of age in the foster system. These foster youth turned homeless “adults,” start off at a severe disadvantage in life that when not addressed early, has a trickle down effect that puts a disproportionate amount of stress on social services. The mayor was joined by many within the community including the cast of Major Crimes and the Creator of the CSI television franchise. The gala precipitated with success stories as those who are served by the covenant house mixed with celebrities and other attendees in a way that spoke to my heart delivering the message that homelessness is a human condition that can be put to an end through human kindness. As the night continued, both activists of addressing youth homelessness as well as those who were once homeless told the stories of their life and how they came to rise and break through the

cement of poverty and stigmas to produce lives that left no outer scar of where they came from. Yet, these children turned adults did not hide in shame of their past circumstances but instead spoke about how the gift of kindness had overcome their past pains to satiate their minds and hearts such that it could be shared with others. The Covenant House has become a place not only to be served but to serve, as men and woman of look back to open the doors for those who are often unequipped to do so themselves. Many of the speakers did not come from a world of money and had no funds to spare, but what they did share in abundance was their expertise. An orthodontist spoke of how she offered dental services to the youth by taking on one new child a month to give braces to. As she spoke her lips curled as she resisted the urge to smile her cheekbones quaked as her mind thought only of those with whom she’d helped to smile with fearless indignation at those who thought them worthless. The gala coincided with same date and times as the Museum of Contemporary Art’s annual gala, perhaps LA’s most illustrious and exclusive gala. Rather than attend, supporters of the Covenant House of California’s Gala chose to focus on giving rather than status and sharing rather than overindulgence. I have attended my fair share of galas, but never one where such a large proportion were directly involved with the nonprofit’s mission. The beautiful dining hall was populated by those who saw the world, not from a position of life being a zero sum game, but instead screamed out that more is more and that as we grow, we create more to be had.

On three sides, you’re surrounded by the tranquil waves of the Pacific and across the channel is Catalina Island. The coastal setting of Terranea embraces its Mediterranean heritage and incorporates it into its architecture. From the resort lobby and outdoor gardens to private terraces and inviting courtyards with outdoor fireplaces, our carefully tended southern California family resort continues to evolve naturally

over time. Terranea is part of the Destination Hotels collection. The luxury eco resort offers wellappointed rooms and suites and includes a collection of residential Bungalows, Casitas and Villas. An award-winning nine-hole, par-three golf course, the soothing oceanfront Spa at Terranea, four ocean-view pools and a collection of eight distinctive restaurants, bars, cafes and lounges welcomes you with open arms. As the location of many Hollywood films and television shows, all who come to Terranea feel as though they’ve walked onto the set of paradise.

Poised above coastal bluffs with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, Terranea Resort debuted in June 2009 as the only luxury resort destination on the Los Angeles coast. Guests enjoy a sophisticated, yet relaxed ambiance at this Mediterranean-inspired retreat surrounded by a glistening, panoramic seascape. Celebrated for its natural beauty, the 102-acre estate features 582 guestrooms and suites, including spacious bungalows, casitas and villas. Luxurious amenities spotlight eight unique dining experiences, a full-service spa and fitness center, award-winning golf course, four swimming pools, kids’ club, ecological enrichment programs and 135,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor wedding and event space. Terranea is located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, one of Southern California’s most scenic and coveted coastlines overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. Guests enjoy a tranquil escape in this natural haven, with convenient access from both Los Angeles International and Long Beach airports and situated just 30 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. To ensure a harmonious effect the combined efforts of Hill Glazier Architects and Scheurer Architects produce a destination resort that is an elegant blend of authentic Mediterranean design, coupled with the ecological and aesthetic

characteristics of the natural habitat of this rare coastline location. At first glance, this eco friendly hotel appears to be two and three stories high as it gently falls away to four and five stories toward the sea to embrace the coastal views. In addition, there is seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces to take full advantage of the location’s ideal climate and natural beauty. Rancho Palos Verdes takes its name from Cañada de Palos Verdes or canyon of green trees and was originally inhabited by the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe. Years later, the land passed to a consortium of New York investors led by Frank A. Vanderlip,

by way of Don Dolores Sepulveda. Considered the founding father of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Vanderlip built the first homes on the land in 1924 with a plan for a magnificent Italian village that would hug the coast. Later, the site became Marineland of the Pacific, a seaside animal theme park, and was subsequently used as a set location for various major motion pictures and television productions. Lowe Enterprises became involved with the 102-acre property in 1998 and thus began a 10-year journey, which is now Terranea Resort. Terranea Resort has been meticulously designed to heighten and preserve the natural beauty of its oceanfront backdrop, showcasing a coastal Mediterranean aesthetic with design elements sensitive to the native environment. Each of the resort’s spacious guest retreats exude a warm, residential feel with luxurious, yet comfortable furnishings and private balconies that overlook elegant gardens and breathtaking ocean vistas. For added space and privacy, guests can choose from 20 two-bedroom bungalows, 50 three-

Also for the little ones are the Tide Pool Kids’ Club and Adventure Camp. Catering to an international palate, Terranea’s eight exceptional dining venues range from gourmet cuisine to casual fare – all set against the Pacific Ocean. Terranea’s signature restaurant reflects a modern twist on California cuisine as inventive as its name suggests (Spanish for “sea” and French for “salt”). A seasonal, gourmet menu spotlights local ingredients alongside herbs and produce grown on property in the chef ’s garden and local partner farms. With its spectacular cliff-top setting directly above the Pacific Ocean, Nelson’s is a guest favorite for casual dining. A

n exciting, hotel-wide refurbishment is bringing new magic to the luxurious Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa at the Disneyland Resort, with completely redesigned guest rooms plus a refreshed lobby, pool areas and the concierge-level Craftsman Club. The most extensive refurbishment since the hotel’s 2001 opening will elevate the premium guest experience and bring a contemporary approach to the Arts & Crafts design style. The renovations will roll out in phases, with expected completion by the end of 2017. Guests will begin to enjoy the first phase of refreshed guest rooms starting this spring. Recently named a AAA Four Diamond hotel by the Automobile Club of Southern California for the sixteenth year in a row, the 948-room Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa captures the romantic spirit of California’s Arts & Crafts movement in the early 20th century. “Our renovation adds more luxury to this iconic Southern California hotel, while staying committed to its signature Arts & Crafts design,” said Dan Coleman, General Manager of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. “We want our guests to feel they are staying in a Disney hotel that’s distinctly situated in beautiful California. The revitalized design helps convey this feeling and allows us to continue exceeding guest expectations.”

Redesigned Guest Rooms Every single element in the redesigned guest rooms will be new, creating a fresh sense of luxury – from floor and walls to furnishings, bedding and linens, as well as upgraded bathrooms. Upon entry, guests will notice beautiful hardwood flooring transitioning into soft, bright-toned carpeting. Linens and pillows are restyled in a bright, white palette and upgraded bathrooms include new fixtures. The room decor is a contemporary take on the Arts & Crafts style featuring all-new furniture made of natural oak, specially designed for each room, as well as California-inspired artwork created by artists and Disney Imagineers, including beautiful headboard walls with wood inlay designs featuring Chip ‘n Dale climbing orange trees! Guests with sharp eyes

will catch other uniquely Disney details throughout these newly enhanced rooms.

Other Enhancements Pools: The pools and surrounding areas have been redesigned with new hardscapes that reinforce the Arts and Crafts feeling of this premier Disney resort. A variety of natural stones were chosen to create a warm and welcoming environment at each pool. Lobby: The already spectacular six-story Grand Hall lobby will continue to impress guests with new, stylish furnishings to complement the existing Arts and Crafts décor. The Craftsman Club: The new design for The Craftsman Club, the hotel’s concierge-level lounge, will draw inspiration from the architectural and furniture designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a visionary of the Glasgow Style of the Arts and Crafts movement. New hardwood flooring, customdesigned rugs, finely-crafted artisanal furniture and specially-commissioned art will add to the sophisticated, upscale tone of the Club. he LA Design Festival returns this month, running from June 8-11. Now in its seventh year, the Festival honors LA’s rich creative culture and its status as a global city of design. In a departure from years past, the LA Design Festival is being abbreviated from a fortnight of festivities to four days of intense programming anchored around two new creative districts – City Market South and ROW DTLA – in downtown LA. The 7th Annual Opening Night Party and de LaB’s Making LA Together will be hosted at City Market South. Described as Project Runway Meets Shark Tank, Making LA Together will feature our city’s brightest design minds pitching their ideas to a live audience; the ultimate design charrette. Other design conversations and pop-up experiences will be hosted at ROW DTLA, including New California Craft, an exhibition curated by Happy Mundane’s Jonathan Lo; the hypercurated modern design show INTRO/LA; LAX >< DET, a conversation exploring design connection between Los Angeles and Detroit and a discussion about how both cities express creativity; FOOD >< DESIGN, a conversation that explores how design impacts food; A+R’s Preview Reception; and Adobe Creative Jam. The LA Design Festival space at ROW DTLA will also feature workshops by Unique LA and Moved LA, and pop-up shops curated by Clever and the collective Atmosphere. Additional events will be held throughout downtown Los Angeles, as well as Hollywood and Culver City.

ICON and EDGE award recipients will be honored at the Opening Night Party at City Market South. “The LA Design Festival is a reflection of our city’s creative diversity and talent,” said LA Design Festival Co-Founder Haily Zaki. “While we don’t establish official themes, this year our programs proudly celebrate women in design, and look towards the future of our global design city.” www.ladesignfestival.org Tracy Wilkinson

he Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents Los Angeles to New York: Dwan Gallery, 1959–1971, an examination of the storied history of Dwan Gallery, one of the most important galleries of the postwar period in the United States. Virginia Dwan (b. 1931), gallery owner, art patron, and collector, was one of the greatest champions of avant-garde art and artists of the mid-20th century. During her more than 11 years as a gallerist, Dwan’s Los Angeles and New York galleries were among the first bicoastal spaces dedicated to showcasing contemporary art in America. As an arts patron, Dwan was a pivotal figure in the Los Angeles art scene, often providing artists with stipends, studio space, and housing, in addition to giving many artists their first solo shows. At the time, the exhibitions presented at Dwan Gallery were at the forefront of postwar avant-garde art. Dwan organized one of the first Pop art exhibitions in the United States, My Country ’Tis of Thee (1962), and she was one of the earliest and most ardent supporters of Minimal Art and Earthworks. Founded in 1959, Dwan Gallery first opened in a storefront in Westwood, Los Angeles. The gallery presented groundbreaking exhibitions of New York artists such as Philip Guston, Franz Kline, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Ad Reinhardt, and Larry Rivers as well as the Los Angeles-based artist Edward Kienholz. In 1962, Dwan relocated her gallery within Westwood to a larger, more open space that she co-designed with architect Morris Verger and which featured high ceilings and arches after the V.C. Morris building in San Francisco. The expansive new space allowed her to present

ambitious installations and monumental sculptures. In 1965, she opened her second gallery in New York City. Smaller and less distinctive than her Los Angeles space (which she continued to operate until 1967), the New York gallery was a fitting setting for the Minimal Art Dwan would exhibit there. The Los Angeles gallery was notable for introducing East Coast artists to West Coast audiences, and in turn, the New York gallery presented exhibitions of work by Los Angeles-based artists, such as Kienholz. The exhibition comprises a selection of works from the 134 shows presented at Dwan Gallery between 1959 and 1971. On view are more than 120 objects, by 52 artists, and representing all

“The exhibition comprises a selection of works from the 134 shows presented at Dwan Gallery between 1959 and 1971” media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, films/videos, conceptual art pieces, and representations of earthworks. Unique to LACMA’s presentation are 27 works that were not on view in the Washington D.C. presentation. The exhibition includes numerous works from LACMA’s collection such as Mel Bochner’s Language Is Not Transparent, Marcel Duchamp’s From or by Marcel Duchamp or Rrose Sélavy (The Box in a Valise), Philip Guston’s The Room, Kienholz’s Back Seat Dodge ’38, Claes Oldenburg’s Baked Potato #1, and Charles Ross’s Six Prisms from the Origin of Colors. LAST CHANCE TO SEE Moholy-Nagy: Future Present Until June 18

1959–1971 was organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. on the occasion of Virginia Dwan’s historic gift in 2013 of 250 works of art from her collection to the museum. The exhibition was curated by James Meyer, associate curator of modern art, National Gallery of Art, and curatorial and academic advisor, Dia Art Foundation. Stephanie Barron, senior curator of modern art at LACMA, is the coordinating curator of the Los Angeles presentation. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, copublished by the National Gallery of Art and the University of Chicago Press. “Since its inception, LACMA has been committed to championing Southern Californian art and artists,” said Michael Govan, LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director. “Through her gallery and patronage, Dwan played a major role in shaping the art history of the sixties. Los Angeles to New York: Dwan Gallery, 1959–1971 is a continuation of LACMA’s dedication to recent and historical art from Southern California, and enriches our understanding of the period.” “Despite having organized groundbreaking exhibitions and being a leading patron of earthworks, Dwan and her gallery have received relatively little attention in art historical scholarship,” said Stephanie Barron. “We are excited to join the National Gallery of Art in recognizing Virginia Dwan for her notable contributions and reexamining the important history that she helped shape. The exhibitions mounted at Dwan Gallery introduced viewers in Los Angeles and New York to the most ambitious art practices of the time.” Until September 10, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036

The first comprehensive retrospective of the work of László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) in the United States in nearly 50 years, this long overdue presentation reveals a utopian artist who believed that art could work hand-in-hand with technology for the betterment of humanity. Moholy-Nagy: Future Present examines the career of this pioneering painter, photographer, sculptor, and filmmaker as well as graphic, exhibition, and stage designer, who was also an influential teacher at the Bauhaus, a prolific writer, and later the founder of Chicago’s Institute of Design. The exhibition includes more than 250 works in all media from public and private collections across Europe and the United States, some of which have never before been shown publicly in the U.S. Also on display is a large-scale installation, Room of the Present, a contemporary construction of an exhibition space originally conceived by Moholy-Nagy in 1930. Though never realized during his lifetime, the Room of the Present illustrates Moholy’s belief in the power of images and various means by which to disseminate them—a highly relevant paradigm in today’s constantly shifting and evolving technological world.

Monsoon: Indian Paintings of the Rainy Season Until July 2 Lovers stealing out for secret trysts under cover of stormy nights, visits to the monsoon retreats of holy men, and divine beings associated with sources of water and rain are among the pictorial subjects in this exhibition, which explores visual representations of the rainy season in India. Typically arriving each June with dramatic cloudbursts and intense rainfall along the southern and northeastern reaches of the subcontinent, the monsoon is the most eagerly anticipated weather phenomenon in India, sustaining lives, transforming landscapes, and raising human spirits. As an integral feature of South Asian life, the rains have long been celebrated in various mythologies, rituals, communal observances, and poetic expressions. This selection of paintings, from northern India and the Himalayan foothills, conveys the ways in which Indian literature, music, and visual arts have mirrored and amplified broadly shared cultural perspectives on, and lived experiences of, the monsoon.

hristopher Street West (CSW), in collaboration with the City of West Hollywood, the City of Los Angeles, and its community partners, is thrilled to continue its storied history of celebrating LGBTQ+ activism and empowering the LGBTQ+ community across Southern California. Now in its 47th year, the organization will continue to host the inclusive LA Pride Festival on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11 – a weekendlong event with live music, activations, and food and drink from local eateries. Past performances have included Ke$ha, Jennifer Hudson, Krewella, Fifth Harmony, Charlie XCX, Tinashe, Daya, Danity Kane, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Ciara. The most noticeable change to this year’s programming is the #ResistMarch on Sunday, June 11. For this year only, in place of the annual LA Pride Parade, CSW will lead a human rights march starting in Hollywood – where CSW organized the world’s first permitted gay rights march in 1970 – and ending in West Hollywood. This is a free event being held in solidarity with the National Equality March for Unity and Pride in Washington, DC on the same day. To participate, donate, or get updates, visit resistmarch.org. Additionally, in the lead up to the LA Pride Festival and #ResistMarch, CSW plans to host a number of events throughout “Pride Week,” helping to amplify the City of West Hollywood’s “One City, One Pride” community initiative. And today, they continue to produce the LA Pride Parade and Festival every June in the City of West Hollywood. The D Throne SA luxury Electric toy car built for the mini millionaire in your life

F

or those of you with a love of luxury vehicles, this is a one in a million chance to encourage your child to have the same tastes as you – and the quality of the craftsmanship is unparalleled, considering that it’s intended for use by a child. Outrageously stylish and well made, boasting a design aesthetic inspired by the vehicles of the early 1900s, there is an awful lot to love about these contraptions for the little person in your life. The four-wheeled work of art bears all the hallmarks of craftsmanship one might associate with a luxury brand.

“There is an awful lot to love about these contraptions for the little person in your life”

Luxury cars often make heads turn when they drive by in their all-elegant gleaming avatars. This though, is hardly ever the case when you see a kid zooming around in a cute little toy car. However, here to make your jaws drop is the D Throne S Electric.

36 JUNE 2017

The super-luxe D Throne S is painstakingly designed and is in all probability the most luxurious toy your child could ever own. The tiny automobile also offers you a perfect reason to bond with you little one, with a space on its rear that easily allows an adult to hop on board. Parents can also activate different modes on the smart controller and turn the D. Throne S into a motorised or non-motorised stroller. Designed by Seoul-based Hyunsoo Choi and

“A great attention to detail can also be seen in the exterior and interior design of the car” Taeno Yoon at Joongho Choi Studio, D Throne is certainly no ordinary car manufacturer – they are currently on their third generation of their electric cars which just seem to be getting better and better with time. A great attention to detail can also be seen in the exterior and interior design of the car with finishes of exquisite car enamel and hand-made leather seats, four-inch aluminum wheels, side LEDs and working headlights for safety. This model also has been composed by simply dividing its body parts into two sections, which are top and bottom, using plastic molding techniques. In addition, it is designed to simultaneously configure gold grill parts located in front of the body, and a fender structure attached to each wheel, which maintains a design of a classic car. Concurrently, it has implemented a user-friendly feature that allows users to safely and easily manage and use the car. The luxe little car can be purchased in black, khaki, and. an off-white color (complete with shimmering copper accentuations in both models). If you can afford to pamper your child silly (with no monetary limits whatsoever!), then buying him/ her the luxurious D Throne S is probably the ultimate gift. The rechargeable battery provides up to 10 hours of driving time, so a family can enjoy outdoor activities while it is available to convert the mode in situations when carrying children in something like a stroller. It has slip-proof breaks to prevent the car slipping. To have these various functions possible, the structures of the design and appearance have been delicately constructed by placing the parts and accessories though the engineering technology during the electronic car development process. The Korean electric car manufacturer has certainly made it big by going small, and counts amongst its esteemed clients Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Al Maktoum, the Crown Price of Dubai, who placed a customised order blinged out with over 2,000 Swarovski crystals.

Dimensions of the D Throne S are 40”H x 23.5”L x 15”W and can hold up to 200kg. For those who really want to spoil their child with a piece of automotive awesomeness, this is surely the chief candidate for the job. Interested in designing a varied range of objects, Joongho Choi and his team have participated in numerous projects ranging from lighting to IT electronics and furniture. Building partnerships with various companies including American Standard, 3M, Jabra, Samsung, Banyan Tree and etc, they were introduced and awarded by several globally known media. Their brand philosophy is to create a product that is based on the reality, and the comfort of comfort for a long time.

Every Sunday from 6pm to 10pm, THE Blvd features live jazz from celebrated pianist Ricky V, along with caviar bites from Petrossian, and martinis crafted by Carbonadi Italia, an ultra-premium vodka from Italy and brought to California to be micro-oxygenated and then filtered through rare carbonados – more commonly known as black diamonds. “Guests are craving a global experience by way of cuisine and cocktails - I call it the pendulum response to the local and homegrown movement. While people still want their ingredients locally sourced, they want to see those ingredients used in a way that takes them beyond borders,” says Grant Nelson, General Manager at THE Blvd. “Sunday nights at THE Blvd transport our guests to a warm summer night on the Riviera without ever stepping out of Beverly Hills.” Inspired by THE Blvd’s Mediterranean approach to cuisine, Sundays on the Riviera offers a curated selection of craft Carbonadi martinis including a Classico Italia with dry vermouth; the Tuscan Sun with Martini Ambrato, Aperol and grapefruit bitters; the Erbe D’oro with Amaro Nonino and orange bitters; or the Dolce Vita with Amaro Montenegro and Jerry Thomas bitters. fter a design-savvy renovation, Third Street Promenade’s marquee two-story food hall The Gallery has officially announced the first occupants to rouse an exciting new dining collective – the enterprising Everytable and the whimsically boutique Sloan’s Ice Cream. Opening these sweet and savory offerings on the street level is The Gallery’s first move towards rostering a diverse collection of ultimately 10 culinary merchants, and the announcement primes the food hall for a future unveiling of ambitious chef-driven concepts on the deck level. The socially-concious Everytable is set up just inside The Gallery’s main entryway with a grab-and-go outpost, offering nutritious meals at affordable prices without compromising on quality. Everytable’s business model is driven by a belief that healthy food is a human right. Meals are made with wholesome ingredients and priced according to the neighborhoods each store serves. A San Fernando Valley favorite, Sloan’s Ice Cream is sweet-toothed fantasyland of homemade ice cream, freshly baked sweets, hand dipped apples, and a huge variety of bulk candy housed inside a prismatic, chandelier rich shop. DAME VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

D

ame Vivienne Isabel Westwood OBE is a British fashion designer known for her influence on punk fashion and dressing the Sex Pistols, as well as causing a stir with her political opinions and outspoken attitude. It’s no surprise that her 76 years on earth have included some very interesting moments. Vivienne studied fashion and silversmithing at the Harrow School of Art in London at the age of 17, but left after one term saying that a workingclass girl could never make a living in the art world. She went on to work in a factory and then as a primary school teacher. During this period, she created her own jewellery, which she sold from a stall on Portobello Road. She met Malcolm McLaren, and they moved into a council flat in Clapham. In 1971 McLaren opened a boutique at 430 King’s Road called “Let It Rock” later known as “Sex” and now World’s End. Westwood created clothes drawing inspiration from bikers and fetishists. The “punk style” included bondage gear, safety pins, razor blades, bicycle or toilet chains on clothing and spiked dog collars/chokers for jewellery, as well as outrageous make-up and hair. During this period, McLaren became manager of the punk band, the Sex Pistols, and subsequently the two garnered attention as the band wore Westwood’s and McLaren’s designs. It was their

58 JUNE 2017

ability to synthesise clothing and music that shaped the 1970s UK punk scene. Vivienne Westwood went on to open four shops in London, and by 2015, operated 12 retail outlets in the UK with 63 worldwide. In April 1989 Westwood appeared on the cover of Tatler dressed as then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The suit that Westwood wore had been ordered for Thatcher but had not yet been delivered. The cover bore the caption “This woman was once a punk”. She was awarded an OBE in 1992, and in 2006, the title of “Dame” by the Prince of Wales. In 2007, Westwood was awarded the gong for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design at the British Fashion Awards. Vivienne Westwood has long been known for her political activism and using her brand to draw attention to causes such as climate change, nuclear weapons and human rights. In January 2015, she announced her support of the Green Party, and openly supports Amnesty International, Environmental Justice Foundation and Friends of the Earth. For more than 35 years, Westwood has designed clothes for heroes. Outrageously flamboyant, they are beautiful, brave and often swim against the tide. Her Red Label collection has a huge presence at every London Fashion Week. www.viviennewestwood.com

Architects of Beauty:

The Hollywood Beauty Awards

H

WORDS: Jeremy Bamidele

ollywood is a bastion of smoke and mirrors where rather than being found, celebrities are made. The architects of beauty spell audiences to gather in droves in hopes of smearing the beauty off their icons to add to their own. Like all magic tricks, the power is in the hiding. For this reason, even those who are at the pillar of the beauty industry racking up Emmys and Oscars for their work, remain largely unknown to the general public. I currently serve on the Board of the Hollywood Beauty Awards, thrown by LATF USA, the award ceremony grants a rear opportunity for these hidden stars to receive praise from those whom they have granted the opportunity to become and remain public icons. I spoke to Paraplue Inc. CEO and founder of the Hollywood Beauty Awards, Michelle Elyzabeth about the tension that exists between stars and star makers. “To me, they (Beauticians behind the stars) should be as well known as the stars are. To me, they are as important. You know we create these monsters, which are called the stars. We create these monsters. They become very difficult to deal with.” The relationship between stars and star makers is contentious, to say the least with many celebrities biting the hand that feeds them and scorning those from whom their rise depended. Just this week the Writers Guild, responsible for writing our favorite scripted movies and television shows, yes even reality TV shows went on strike. Celebrities are “like unruly children” who are rewarded often times without comparable merit to, “all these people behind them, who don’t get any recognition. They work 12 hours, 14 hours, 16 hours a day and nobody even says thank you. So we decided that we were going to put them forward.” states Elyzabeth. Up until the Hollywood Beauty Awards this year, Elyzabeth funded the entire award show out of her own pocket. Unlike many organizations that utilize non-profits to advance their corporate goals,

at the HBA’s there has been almost no mention of Paraplue Inc. or any of Michelle Elyzabeth’s other business ventures. Rather, Elyzabeth has included the purveyors of beauty a stage of their own, uncorrupted by the Hollywood tendency to give only in the hopes that something will be given back. This year Lexus became the title sponsor of the Hollywood Beauty Awards. Zachary Quinto funded his own way flying from New York to San Diego and driving himself to honor one of his stars, Joel Harlow, who he worked with on the Star Trek reboot franchise, for which Harlow won an Academy Award for best makeup and hairstyling. Harlow whose iconic work far surpasses his public reputation has worked for decades transforming the ordinary into the fantastic. He has worked with many stars including Johnny Depp, a past award winner of the HBA’s, on three of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Rather than being an award show for the public, the HBA’s is an industry event, in which only beauticians and celebrities are invited to celebrate the camaraderie between industry affiliates that is necessary to thrive yet often poorly maintained. While many stars showed up to admire their industry celebs, there were still those who were preposterously absent, including Taraji P. Henson, for which her makeup artist, Beverly Jo Pryor, and hairstylist, Melissa Forney, were nominated. Both Pryor and Flowers won awards that night for their work including on Empire and Hidden Figures, both of which Henson starred in. Her absence was made more apparent by the caliber of stars who did show up for their team including Octavia Spencer, Paris Hilton, and Melissa Rivers. When I inquired about her absence to Elizabeth, I was told, “Taraji P. Henson would not take the time to come and thank them for all the time that they spent on this woman [sic: her] to me is no good. That’s why I say we create these monsters.” It appears that there remains a lot of work to build mutual respect between stars and the crews that give them the reflectivity to shine.

vailable at all Target stores and www.target.com, Victoria Beckham for Target reflects the essence of the Victoria, Victoria Beckham line, including original designs and inspiration from iconic silhouettes, with apparel and accessories for women, girls, toddler and baby. The collaboration with Target also marks the designer’s first foray into the kids’ product category. Select pieces from the collection will be available for sale internationally via www.victoriabeckham.com. “Working with Target has been a really exciting process, and this partnership allows us to share the essence of Victoria, Victoria Beckham with more people than ever before,” said Victoria Beckham. “I was inspired to create the Victoria, Victoria Beckham line when I was pregnant with Harper, and since its launch, the category has evolved into an established lifestyle collection. With both the line and my daughter turning five, I felt it was the perfect time to extend into a more accessible price point and to celebrate both milestones by opening the range up to include childrenswear for the first time.” “Victoria Beckham is synonymous with impeccable style, and she’s known around the globe for her distinct point of view as a designer,” said Mark Tritton, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer, Target. “It’s been incredibly exciting to see how Victoria’s brand has evolved over the years, and we are thrilled that Target’s

guests will be a part of that journey with this latest must-have collaboration.” Victoria Beckham for Target is inspired by the Victoria, Victoria Beckham line, as well as Beckham’s everyday life and the shared experiences between mother and child. With more than 200 items featuring soft pastels, bright pops of color and pretty spring prints, the collection is feminine and functional and reflects the designer’s commitment to quality craftsmanship. Ranging in price from $6-$70, with most items under $40, Victoria Beckham for Target will be offered in sizes XS-3X for women and NB-XL for girls, toddler and baby. Standout pieces include easy-to-wear dresses, rompers and playful tops and bottoms for women, with corresponding styles for girls, toddler and baby. Victoria Beckham is an internationally-known businesswoman, fashion designer and style icon. Since launching in 2008 at New York Fashion Week, the Victoria Beckham brand has developed into a celebrated mainstay of the fashion industry. In 2011, following the success of her mainline collection, Beckham launched Victoria, Victoria Beckham, a free-spirited companion to the original Ready-to-Wear collection, offering softer silhouettes and a more playful fashion perspective. With each collection, Victoria adapts her own personal style to the needs and desires of the international women who swear by the label’s luxurious and flattering garments. www.target.com

SPIRIT OF BIG BANG MOONPHASE HUBLOT PAINTS THE MOON IN ColorS

H

ublot’s love of color infuses the Spirit of Big Bang Moonphase with four new models in shades of blue, purple, orange and pink. Matching strap, quartz dial, sand-blasted moon phase disc, hands, indices and stone-set bezel all set the tone of this vivid monochrome collection. Are you hoping for light and color this summer? Hublot has brought the two together, taking the brilliant intensity of the moon and infusing it with the season’s on-trend colors - indigo blue for denim lovers, bold purple for an ultraviolet look, vibrant orange for an upbeat take on time and bubblegum pink for a rose-tinted outlook. Inside the iconic 42 mm tonneau case, beneath its sapphire crystal, the openworked architecture of the HUB1770 hand-wound skeleton movement is enhanced by a quartz dial made from silicon dioxide

(SiO2) and aluminium oxide (AI2O3) melted at high temperature. The quartz is colored by the addition of a mixture of “rare earth elements”. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, the dial requires specific cutting technology and expert mastery of the materials to create a uniform whole. The monochrome setting extends to the minutest details, with the semi-transparent sand-blasted disc revealing two alternating moons, also in matching shades. A play of contrasts and colors that focuses the eye on the arresting complication at 6 o’clock. A lunar cycle is reproduced in a large round window that completes one revolution every two lunar months. This two-hand model features a small second at 9 o’clock and a large date displayed on a double analogue disc between 12 o’clock and 3 o’clock. Accentuating the piece’s impression of depth and geometry, the Spirit of Big Bang Moonphase

alternates polished, satin-finished titanium or King Gold with colored flat surfaces. Its bezel is set with 48 blue, orange or pink sapphires, or amethysts. The strap, in alligator stitched onto natural black rubber, perfectly matches the four colors of the watch. Water-resistant to 100 metres, the Spirit of Big Bang Moonphase has a power reserve of 50 hours. A truly indulgent horological mechanism and complication. www.hublot.com

Strobe your way into

Summer

Strobing is the beauty technique you probably didn’t know you needed. Still not fully au fait with what it means? It might sound like something out of a Star Wars movie, and strobing, you could say, is a bit like having a magic lightsaber in your beauty kit. WORDS: Lisa Haynes

I

t’s basically highlighting trickery - think of it as the more subtle, flattering sister of contouring - and though the trend started with faces, it’s now transcended to hair, body, and even fingernails. Because strobing is all about achieving that elusive lit-from-within look, it’s the perfect trend to master for spring. Time to get glowing...

HAIR HIGHLIGHTERS Goodbye balayage and babylights, hair strobing is the hottest new brightening technique for tresses. “The idea of strobing is to accent hair with subtle strobes 72 JUNE 2017

of color to illuminate the face,” explains Georgie Mathers, Toni&Guy technical artistic director. “In the right places, it can diminish areas of width or widen a narrow face shape.” You can now strobe your strands at home too, using quick-fixes like spray-on highlighting toners or brush-on ‘hairshadow’ (like eyeshadow for hair). Find them in typical hair tone shades, or more daring statement colors. “Limit the placement to a few key areas you wish to highlight,” Georgie advises. “You can use the color accents in so many ways - to add depth, create a root ombre effect, a color top-up, or even disguising greys.”

BODY BRIGHTENERS Limb-baring season is approaching, and body strobing is the ultimate shortcut for honed and toned limbs. Michelle Obama arms, anyone? “Highlighting the areas of the body where light naturally reflects gives an instant sculpted effect,” says James Harknett, tanning guru and Fake Bake ambassador. “The easiest parts of the body to strobe for spring are the shoulders, arms and shins - just always focus on areas the sun would hit and naturally tan.” James recommends using self-tan 24 hours before strobing, to up the contrast of your finish. Don’t limit yourself to body specific products - some of the best strobing sticks and palettes are designed for the face but work just as well gleamed onto shins and shoulders.

MANI ILLUMINATORS Sure, it’s subtle - but nail strobing is still a thing. Pearlised, sheeny manis were on repeat backstage for SS17, to top off all that healthy-looking strobed

hair and skin. “Highlighting, or nail strobing, gives you a dewy, shimmery, healthy finish to the nails,” says Jenni Draper, nail expert and OPI brand ambassador, who adds that even lengthened talons can be yours, with some clever strobing trickery: “Using an iridescent polish will create highlights down the length of the nail, giving the illusion of longer nails.” For low-key nail strobing, she recommends sticking to champagne tones for fair skin, golden tones for olive skin, and terracotta tones for darker skin. If you want to up the nail ante, make an impact with high-shine holographic or chrome finishes.

Titanic for Tourists

R

esting at a depth of 13,000ft, the RMS Titanic continues to captivate the world more than one hundred years after it sunk to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean. It has just been announced that those still intrigued by the vessel will be able to see it for themselves by joining diving trips to the shipwreck next year. London-based tour operator Blue Marble Private are now accepting applicants for the eightday journeys in May 2018, organised by OceanGate Expeditions. This lifetime opportunity will be open to just nine clients at a time - beginning their experience by flying by helicopter, or seaplane from St John’s, Newfoundland to the expedition support yacht set somewhere above the wreck. The small group of privileged visitors will be taught about the ship’s workings on their second day on board by its crew and guest explorers, scientists and expedition crew. Those who wish to engage more directly with the workings of the ship have the chance to take part in orientation sessions and can “assist” the crew in planning a dive, operating the sonar and using the undersea navigation system. It’s on days 3-6 that the expedition is at its most exciting… Weather permitting, up to three passengers at a time will climb aboard a specially designed titanium and carbon fibre submersible to see the remains of the Titanic itself. Accompanied by a pilot and deep ocean expert, they will sail over the ship’s deck and should even be able to glimpse it’s still famous grand staircase from amongst the debris.

76 JUNE 2017

Dives will take place throughout the day or night, dependent on when weather conditions are most favourable, and Blue Marble Private’s clients will be expected to contribute to the mission by assisting with sub-sea communications and undertaking basic tasks. There will be lectures, discussions, mission updates and dive briefs with deep ocean explorers and scientists. After a debrief and a further day at sea, groups will return to St John’s. As well as being a once-in-a-lifetime experience, seeing the Titanic in person is a privileged experience shared by very few people on the planet. The vessel, which measured more than 880ft long and 100ft tall, went down with the loss of over 1,500 lives on 15th April 1912 during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The complexity of the voyage goes some way to explaining its price: £86,500 (c.$110,867.05) per person. Taking into account inflation, the price is equivalent to the $4,350 a first-class passenger would have paid to sail on the Titanic’s maiden voyage in 1912. And all going well, the package could be made available to a limited number in summer 2019.

The Dorchester Collection recently rolled out a new campaign across all hotels – Perfection Just Happens – to celebrate the most special moments throughout the year. A perfect way to celebrate with friends and family. The campaign was launched with several new signature cocktails from the legendary bartenders of Dorchester Collection and are designed for guests to savor special occasions. These locally inspired and innovative libations are included in a new specialty cocktail menu. At the Beverly Hills Hotel, the new Pink Palace cocktail is an ode to the hotel’s nickname and mirrors the color of the iconic façade. Bar manager Andrzej Lewczyk has concocted this drink using Monsoon chai-infused light rum, Velvet Falernum, strawberry coconut purée and pineapple juice. It is blended and served in hurricane glass. Garnished with mint and a pink umbrella, it is refreshing by the pool or on the terrace ($18). In addition to the growing list of inventive cocktails at the Hotel Bel Air is The Swan, a tribute to the resident swans floating nearby on the estate’s Swan Lake. Bar manager Micah Paloff created a whiskeybased cocktail that includes Hill Haven Lodge Whiskey, egg white, fresh lemon juice and simple syrup. It is shaken and strained into a martini glass. The topper – a mist of Angostura bitters is sprayed through a swan template to leave an image of a swan ($22).

Want to own an Island? East Sister Rock Island is a true private island, so you, and only you, own it in its entirety. But it’s admittedly a very, very small island only a quarter-mile offshore, so you’re not completely isolated from the rest of humanity. The island is surrounded by a coral reef, and there are plenty more worth exploring around the island. The property also includes a helicopter launch pad and above-ground pool. East Sister Rock Island is a ¼ mile off the Atlantic shore of the city of Marathon. On the private island sits a dream come true getaway home with 5000+ square feet of living area which includes a 2,700 square foot veranda, boat dock (fisherman’s dream), helicopter launch pad and many more surprises. Since the Island is surrounded by coral reef, it makes water sports hard to ignore. Take advantage of snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities from the island itself and/or the charted coral reef just minutes away by boat. For the fisherman, East Sister Rock Island is ideal. Between the island and the mainland; pods of permit and bonefish thrive in the flats. World renowned tarpon fishing at the Seven Mile bridge is only a five minute boat ride to the West. To the south lies the Gulf where the deep sea angler can battle sailfish, dolphin, marlin and wahoo, or simply relax and enjoy the secluded tropical charm of the island. A New World to discover “Portuguese rulers were the first ones to rule Rio as they landed on the soil of Guanabara Bay in 1502”

Since the Rio 2016 Olympics this incredible city has become one of the most popular holiday hotspots for this year

R

io de Janeiro, known as the marvellous city (“Cidade Maravilhosa”) by the local Cariocas, proudly offers stunning culture and history, white sandy beaches, carnivals, amazing shopping opportunities, incredible nightlife…and views to die for. Rio de Janeiro is the city it is today because of its historical past. Portuguese rulers were the first ones to rule Rio as they landed on the soil of Guanabara Bay in 1502. The bay forms the opening of a river, hence the name ‘Rio de Janeiro’ which means ‘River of January’. When Brazil achieved independence in 1889, Rio was named the capital. The statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is part of the new edition of the Seven Wonders of the World. Acting as a representative of Rio, the attraction, inaugurated in 1931, was built approximately 38 meters high and covers 710 meters of the Corcovado Mountain, providing panoramic views of Rio beyond compare. The world famous Rio de Janeiro Carnival is celebrated during the four days previous to the beginning of Lent. A trip to Rio de Janeiro is incomplete without experiencing the shimmer

Many people travel to Rio for its famous beaches like Ipanema - the wealthier sibling of the famous Copacabana beach, located between Leblon and Arpoador regions. For shopaholics, shopping in Rio is a dream come true! The malls are home to some of the most famous brands in the world. The city also has a number of markets well worth a visit. E

ven if you don’t wear pink, there are so many facets to this rosy hue that if styled correctly, it can lighten the home without leaving it looking like a Disney-esq doll’s house. The secret is to blend, blend, blend... A balletslipper sofa, a sugar-almond cushion and a coat of pale pink gloss can be designed to shape, color and contour, and be as flattering as your favourite blush.

ROYAL FLUSH “If you’re looking to bring pink into your palette, ensure you pick your shades carefully. Avoid overpowering a room with saccharine hues, and opt for more mature tones, that will add a feminine touch without looking too girly. Deep dusky pinks are right on trend and will work perfectly for a look such as this,” says Ian Dykes, founder and director, Voyage Decoration. “If you’re opting for brighter 90 JUNE 2017

shades, introduce them in small pops on accessories, or through accent detailing such as piping. Placed alongside masculine colors, such as deep navy blues or moody greys, your scheme will be beautifully balanced and seriously stylish.” Another trick is to remember that when pink is combined with white - roses in a white vase, or scented candles on a mirrored table, for instance - it can look cool and glamorous. “As we enter into the summer months, pink continues to be one of the biggest color trends of the year,” says Philip Watkin, DFS design director. “It’s a lot more versatile than you first might think and can be used in a variety of ways. We’ve used pink fabrics on our furniture to create a contemporary and soft environment in the home. Paired with on-trend metallic, especially copper, clean white walls and touches of grey, pink - blush or even bolder fuchsia tones - will create a calm yet vibrant living space.”

ROSE BOUQUET When it comes to updating our favorite rooms, some of us go to great lengths to shop the latest looks. And if your last dalliance was with 50 shades of grey (or darker), then the good news is you can rekindle that flame with an innocent petal pink. “Adding color such as pink to a room is an easy way to update the feel of the space,” says Lucy Ackroyd, bed linen design manager, Christy. “Our Harlow bed linen uses a classic design of large-scale flowers, digitally printed in elegant grey and pink tones. Mixing grey and pink is a popular trend for 2017, giving pink an edgier look than traditionally seen.” But if this still sounds a little too innocent and you’re after a touch more drama, pink framed by violet or black is a tempting scheme that can be dressed up to suit your space.

FEMININE VIBE When it comes to pink fabrics, we often associate it with lightweight, delicate materials, like silk. So what could be lovelier (and more practical) than introducing the shade to a scheme with items that are also strong and sturdy? Thankfully, designers are going full-on rose this season and weaving it into heavier furnishings, with wools and rugs popping up in pink, adding texture to the ‘livingscape’ and looking blooming marvellous. “Wool is naturally associated with the winter months, simply due to its cosy texture and warming properties,” says Martin Aveyard, design director, Bronte by Moon. “However, many forget that wool also regulates temperature, keeping the home cool even in the warmer months. “Consider Shetland wools in fresh and vibrant tones which instantly lift a room, brightening the decor without compromising on warmth and comfort. “Hues of pastel pinks evoke a sense of sunnier climes, and are perfect for updating a statement armchair without losing the cosy feel of wool.”

warmth and cosiness. Add pops of coral, bubble-gum pink and cyan to give interest. “Undemanding and subtle colors, like soft and blush pinks, are emerging in ‘dirtied’ and toned down versions of their former fresh counterparts, showing off the color’s versatility,” Whybrow adds. “Combine a soft pink with a slightly deeper, greyer pink and a chalky, stormy blue-grey. The softer, more feminine side of the color palette creates great contrast with the edgy blue-grey - offering a calm and soothing counterpoint. “Keeping pattern and contrast minimal invites our mind to rest, and to find a new balance between fast paced and slow living.” Top: Image by Macy’s; Circle: Decorative Oval Wall Mirror , $34.99, www.amazon.com; This image: Chic Home Rosetta 5-Piece Comforter Set, Queen, Pink, $93.09, www.amazon.com

FLAWLESS FINISH Want to go whole hog and paint your walls pink? Taking the leap can be as panic-inducing as it is exciting – especially if it doesn’t result in the photo finish you were hoping for. So you don’t get it wrong, think about the direction your room faces and how it looks when the sun shines. “Pale pink looks best in a room with abundant natural light - showing off a sense of freshness”, says Kayleigh-Ann Whybrow, senior technical color consultant, Johnstone’s Paints. “Team Rosebud, a particularly popular color this year, with white trim and furniture, to allow the color to pop. This will allow the room to have a good sense of proportion and freshness, yet retain a sense of JUNE 2017 91

Our love of Scandi interiors shows no sign of waning - but that doesn’t mean you can’t update the theme. Gabrielle Fagan turns to home style blogger and author Niki Brantmark for inspiration

Scandi Love

I

t’s hard to escape Scandinavia’s influence on our lives - and it’s in our living rooms that it’s really made its mark. That uber-cool blend of clean lines, simple shapes and beautifullydesigned functional furniture adds up to a sophisticated, elegant look that’s proved irresistible. But just as the Scandi buzzword-of-the-moment has moved on from the Danish ‘hygge’ to the Swedish ‘lagom’ – which means ‘just the right amount’ – the vibe in interiors has evolved too, making way for more balanced, pared-back style, where comfort and quality reign supreme. That ‘less is more’ vision is perfectly understood by Niki Brantmark, a Londoner who moved to Sweden more than a decade ago. The move inspired her blog, My Scandinavian Home – and now her new book, The Scandinavian Home, opens the door to a host of distinctive spaces, including dreamy log cabins. “Scandinavian homes are renowned for their clean lines and muted colours and there’s a wonderful ease in the way they create them and apply their innate

sense of style,” Brantmark enthuses. “In general, they believe it’s better to take time layering their homes with items that tell a story and have a sense of purpose. It all helps to make their settings unique and filled with personality and beauty.” The huge popularity of the Scandi look means it can be created quickly and easily, or you can follow a more measured approach, and take your time collecting one-off finds and heirloom pieces.

SCANDI STYLE RULES Follow Niki Brantmark’s guide to creating Scandi-style decor... • Keep the look clean and fuss-free, focusing on straight lines and simple shapes. “In many homes, whether urban, country or rural dwellings, you will find only a few beautifully crafted, high-quality iconic design pieces, alongside antiques and flea market finds, all made from natural, sustainable sources.” • Stick to light, muted colours, such as white, light grey and blue, for a calm look and feel. “The 94 JUNE 2017

preference is for light wood floors and white walls and ceilings which reflect the light.” • Leave windows as unobscured as possible to allow natural light to fill the room. “Scandinavians are inspired by light, having an abundance of it in summer, but so little of it in winter, so house design tends to maximise the natural light flow with large windows.” • Create interest using different textures, such as marble, wood and stone. “Nature and weather are major influences, as homes have to be made warm and cosy, not simply with log burning stoves, but also through incorporating earthy colour tones and natural materials from wood to leather, to soften the clean lines of the architecture.” • Add layers of soft materials such as cotton, linen and sheepskin, for a warm and inviting space. Forgo wall-to-wall carpets for wood flooring and a selection of small rugs. As a final finishing touch,

“Nordic principles are largely to do with quiet, understated aesthetics and surroundings,” says Kasia Wiktorowicz, at paint specialists, Valspar. “Muted mid-tones, like shades of grey, caramel or soft blue, are restful yet interesting, and help create a clean and balanced design. Chalky whites also blend quietly with these colours, so you are left with a calming interior that will rejuvenate your mind after a busy day.” “Choose a soft neutral shade for your flooring, which could be wood flooring or tile,” says Jemma Dayman, assistant buyer, Carpetright. “It’s all about introducing different tones of colour, and sheepskins or wool rugs are perfect for this look, which could be in pale hues or, for more practicality but still appropriate, earthy shades.” Statement lights are a feature in a pared back setting, and a selection of pendant lights hung over a table, unified by colour, attract the eye upwards and define a dining area, and there are many furniture companies specialising in Scandinavian style, with furniture and sheepskin rugs. Just a few small details can evoke a sense of this style.
