ondon Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world - and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers alongside Paris, Milan and New York. It presents an unrivalled opportunity to showcase some of the world’s leading fashion talent, with the schedule packed with shows, presentations, showrooms, events and parties from the best and brightest names in the industry. The history of the Royal Warrant can be traced back to medieval times, when competition for Royal favour was intense and the Monarch had the pick of the country’s best tradespeople. By the 15th century, the Lord Chamberlain, as head of the Royal Household, formally appointed tradespeople with a Royal Warrant of Appointment, a practice that continues to this day. Champagne suppliers The Finest Bubble have teamed up with local courier companies in London to offer consumers a two hour champagne emergency service. The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair returns for its first edition of the new year with the Winter fair in Battersea Park. The Decorative Fair takes place three times a year, and offers a fabulous variety of antique and 20th century decoration to the interior designer and private buyer. Uniquely different, this interiors extravaganza is popular with the UK and international trade as well as style-savvy customers looking for unusual one-off pieces for their homes. Collectors also love to attend, finding rarities and fine art. Young British sculptor Charles Elliott and his wife professional showjumper Abbe Elliott, have worked together to further their new luxury equestrian range. Initially working on a simplistic horse sculpture, 24 year old Charles has now pushed his skills and knowledge further to a new polo pony sculpture as well as a new race horse sculpture.

he Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair returns for its first edition of the new year with the Winter fair in Battersea Park. At each Fair a themed foyer display is created to reflect trends associated with period design. The theme this Winter is ‘orientalism’, highlighting how Eastern design travelled the Silk Route to infiltrate our interiors. Furniture, fabrics and objects from, and influenced by, ‘the Orient’ will be for sale in the foyer stand, styled to showcase a collection of items from the 150 specialist antiques, art and 20th century design dealers taking part in the Fair. Up on the Mezzanine at the Winter Decorative Fair is the complimentary London Antique Rug & Textile Art Fair, which relocated to the Battersea Park marquee in 2017. luxury. Tales of souks, bazaars and oases entered our imagination as the objects that travelled from them entered our homes and art. European manufacturers learned to emulate and imitate these ‘oriental’ skills: Delftware, japanned and faux bamboo furniture, printed Lancashire cottons and London silks. Chinoiserie became part of our design repertoire. In the Georgian era great furniture makers added orientalism to their design books; the Prince Regent’s Pavilion of fantasy in Brighton cemented the architectural fashion; in Stoke the potteries developed transfer printing and we took willow pattern ‘china’ to our hearts. With 1990s minimalism came a Zen-like approach to the Silk Route; sand and stone neutrals punctuated by contemplative Buddhas and a nod to colour with Chinese cabinets, floating flowers in lacquered bowls and the ethereal hue of simple celadon ceramics.

Celebrating the Silk Route Since the 1600s, European interiors have embraced the exoticism of Eastern design. The desire for uncommon goods to display in our homes drove merchants to undertake fortune-changing journeys to the East, near and far. Caravans carried silks, lacquer, porcelain, metalwork, precious stones and spices from far-flung China, Nepal, Tibet, central Asia and Persia, whilst ships wound their way around Indonesia, India and Arabia. ROARS INTO LONDON Greenwich Peninsula, From 12th February until September 2018

A

brand-new multimillion-pound attraction that brings dinosaurs to life as never before is coming to London for the first time in February. A unique, immersive live adventure, it has played to sell-out audiences of tens of thousands in its debut season at Birmingham’s NEC. The show’s unique time machine will be set up on Greenwich Peninsula in London and will take families back an astonishing 67 million years to encounter amazing creatures like Tyrannosaurus rex roaming the wild. Londoners will be immersed in an unforgettable experience that, for the very first time, will make them feel as though they are actually there – amongst the dinosaurs, in their world, at their time. Dinosaur tourists are whisked by time machine to join scientists at an extraordinary research station – TimeBase 67 – which has been built on the Late Cretaceous plains 67 million years ago. On the ultimate voyage of discovery, they drive with their guides through lumbering herds of dangerous dinosaurs, watch a dinosaur autopsy, witness hatchlings emerging from eggs, plunge their hands into dinosaur poo, and visit a lookout, with panoramic views of the teeming prehistoric life in every direction. The Creative Director of Dinosaurs in the Wild, Tim Haines, was the award-winning producer of the

BBC TV series Walking with Dinosaurs, seen by 800 million globally. Tim says, “After the huge crowds for Dinosaurs in the Wild in Birmingham, and the anticipation we’re already seeing for our move to Manchester in October, we’re thrilled to announce that Londoners will now be able to time-travel too. It’s a completely new kind of immersive experience, in which we use the latest technology to make it feel like you really are there in that world, with the dinosaurs all around you.” Over a hundred artists, technicians and other industry specialists worked to create the unique experience. It weaves together high-tech audiovisual effects, animatronics and live-action theatre to allow visitors to experience the prehistoric world in a way that has never been possible before. The 70-minute adventure vividly reveals dinosaurs as they really were. Far from being green and scaly creatures, experts now believe that many were colourful and had feathers and fuzz. Dinosaurs in the Wild opens its doors in London on Monday 12th February 2018 on Greenwich Peninsula, just a few minutes from North Greenwich Underground station. Tickets to Dinosaurs in the Wild can be prebooked at www.dinosaursinthewild.com and start from £25 for Advanced Off-peak adult tickets and £85 for Advanced Off-peak family tickets (2 adults and 2 children).

Carly Paoli to headline concert at Cadogan Hall, Chelsea Thursday 15th February 2018

C

arly Paoli has been delighting audiences throughout the world, shared stages with Andrea Bocelli, José Carreras and Elaine Paige, and can count Pope Francis and Prince Charles amongst her fans. Now, following the release of her acclaimed debut album ‘Singing My Dreams’, the classically trained singer is headlining a special concert at London’s Cadogan Hall. With Carly joined on stage by orchestra, choir and special guests, the evening will provide an opportunity to experience the emotional, sincere and dramatic performances that have captured audiences wherever the young artist has appeared.

22 JANUARY 2018

Congratulations on your debut album Singing My Dreams which reached number 2 in the classical album charts. How did you react when you heard the news? It was unbelievable. Everyone says not to expect much when you’re a new artist, but we had 9 weeks at no.2 in the Official Classical Charts! David Mellor gave the album a rave review in the Mail on Sunday and made a video on the Classic FM website. I’ve read his other reviews and I’m proud to have received such lovely words from him as he is such a highly respected critic in the classical world. ]mory of You’, it’s the first song I tried writing lyrics for. I wrote the lyrics 3 years ago after the death of my grandmother. It was a difficult time for me and my whole family. Her loss gave me a new way to express myself which I found through writing lyrics. The music for ‘Memory of You’ is James Horner’s theme for the film Legends Of The Fall. He worked on Titanic, Avatar, and so many more incredible films. He was a musical genius. The first time I performed ‘Memory of You’ was for HRH the Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle. In a horrible coincidence, the next day James Horner died in a plane crash. We were robbed of hearing more of his beautiful music. I became emotionally invested in the song as my love for it grew, and the meaning and story meant more than ever. You are the ambassador for the luxury women’s watch company Bédat & Co. How did that

come about and what are your responsibilities as an ambassador? A few years ago, a representative of theirs saw me perform. She explained the story behind Bédat and how Madam Simone Bédat challenged the traditional male dominated watch industry. She designed a luxury brand timepiece that was by a woman and designed for women. Because the company celebrates the creativity of women, they started a programme devoted to ‘Women of Character.’ They felt that I was such a woman and I grabbed the opportunity to become a brand ambassador. Where can people see you perform next? First, I am singing at a Carol Concert in Holy Trinity Church in Sloane Square, recorded by Classic FM. Then, I am doing my own concert at Cadogan Hall on the 15th February 2018, where I will be joined by acclaimed conductor and composer, Steven Mercurio who I had the privilege of working with in Rome when I performed in a concert ‘La Dolce Vita,’ devoted to Italian film music. There will be special guests, an orchestra and I will sing songs from my album and other music that I love. I am so proud of this concert and am looking forward to immensely. The chance to do my own concert with my own music and to share it with a British audience is thrilling. It’s also the day after Valentine’s Day, how romantic is that? Fit for a Queen The Royal Warrant holders

From piano tuners to opticians to a whip maker, the Royal Warrant holders belong to a very special club

T

he history of the Royal Warrant can be traced back to medieval times, when competition for Royal favour was intense and the Monarch had the pick of the country’s best tradespeople. By the 15th century, the Lord Chamberlain, as head of the Royal Household, formally appointed tradespeople with a Royal Warrant of Appointment – a practice that continues to this day. A Royal Warrant of Appointment – A crest that states “By Appointment To…” is a mark of recognition of those who have supplied goods or services to the Households of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales for at least five years, and who have an ongoing trading arrangement. The Monarch decides who may grant Royal Warrants. These are known as the Grantors: HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales. Today there are around 850 Royal Warrant holders representing a huge cross-section of trade and industry, from individual craftspeople to global multi-nationals. They are united by a commitment to the highest standards of service, quality and excellence. Almost all Warrant holders are members of the Association. There are silversmiths and jewellers, champagne houses and wine merchants, wheelwrights and gun-makers, glovemakers, luxury car manufacturers, tailors and kiltmakers - the kind of luxury brands befitting of a royal family who reside in palaces and castles. Some firms have a record of Royal warrants reaching back over more than 100 years. Warrantholding firms do not provide their goods or services free to the Royal households, and all transactions are conducted on a strictly commercial basis. Chocolatier Prestat was the last warrant

32 JANUARY 2018

holder to be appointed by the Queen Mother - who loved their chocolate mint fondants and violet cremes - in 1999. To apply for a Royal Warrant, a company must have been doing business with the household for at least five years. If they are successful, they can advertise the fact by displaying the Queen’s coat of arms. “The Royal Warrant is the ultimate seal of approval,” says Roger Gadd of whip maker Swaine Adeney Brigg. “Our customers definitely take note of it, which is good for business.” But a Warrant also carries with it responsibilities. Beholders must exercise discretion, and make it their duty not to let standards slip. “Royal warrants don’t just cover what the Royal Family needs, but what a business needs, so there are agricultural and engineering service suppliers, as well as the technology that supports a large business,” says Richard Peck, secretary of the Royal Warrant Holders Association. era Pets specialise in affordable luxury collars and leads for modern dogs. Our fresh contemporary designs are elegant, practical and durable and all made from top quality leathers and include free standard UK delivery. Kera Pets has emerged as result of us rather unsuccessfully trying to find good quality, stylish collars and leads for our own dogs, that were both practical and reasonably priced. We found that while there are lots of luxury dog collars and leads available, they are generally either a bit too plain or a little too over the top, as well as being impractical and most often overly expensive. The Kera brand is developing as a modern alternative to the more traditional or flamboyant luxury dog apparel market, offering a fresh contemporary approach and designs that look great and are both affordable and practical. We now work with a small number of UK

BRITAIN’S TOP RANKIN PHOTOS Monochrome beauty This photographer certainly knows what they’re doing. The viaduct fades beautifully into the background while the harsh black and white colourings on the dog are so impactful.

Rankin’s top tips for taking pictures: 1. The first and most important thing for photography is light. Whether you’re on the bus or in your kitchen, think about light and where it’s coming from all the time to help sculpt the world around you.

Celebrity photographer Rankin has curated a new photo book about Britain, with images submitted by the public. He tells Sarah Marshall about his favourite shots.

A

nyone can be a photographer these days, and even if we can’t reach the higher echelons of A-list snappers, we all have the ability to capture a moment in time. That was the challenge photographic community Photobox set users when they invited submissions for their This is Britain project. Published and produced by Photobox, the coffee table book features images of the colours and characters that make up our society, all taken by members of the public, with a final selection curated by celebrity photographer Rankin. More than 300 pictures reflecting the passage of the day sit alongside essays by personalities such as Kelly Hoppen MBE, Ben Fogle, Lorraine Kelly OBE and Denise van Outen. We asked Rankin to tell us about some of his favourite images from the book. Natural arc I love this photo. The beautiful rainbow seems to perfectly span the length of the bridge. The row of local fishing boats reminds me of the thriving fishing industry of the past. 38 JANUARY 2018

Wallflower This is a great photo. The giant wall appears intimidating with the small child looking up at it. The beautiful apple tree growing up the wall pops out against the red brick. It’s stunning. Time for play Nothing says playtime better than some puddle jumping and this photo captures it perfectly. I love the rows of beach huts in the background - very British.

2. You don’t need a big expensive camera - use a smartphone. They’re perfectly good enough to take great photos. The phone is just a tool, so use your imagination, get creative and take risks.

3. There are no rules. Photography isn’t meant to be prescriptive or strict. It’s supposed to be fun, so get out there and enjoy it.

This is Britain is produced and published by Photobox, in aid of BBC Children In Need, and available now. It’s priced at £25, with more than 40% of the sale price donated to the charity.

BROCKET HALL’S NEW ERA Arts Club and Wine Club to Feature in Brocket Hall’s Lavish Relaunch

O

n 21st February this year, Brocket Hall simultaneously launches the Lady Caroline Arts & Entertainments Club and the Lord Byron Fine Wine Club, as additional opportunities within an already extensive portfolio of experiences which includes the new Estate Membership for businessmen and women. The clubs have been named after two of the most famous names to be associated with Brocket Hall - Lord Byron and his spurned mistress, Lady Caroline Lamb. As wife of the second Lord Melbourne, Lady Caroline Lamb (who introduced the Waltz to England in the Ballroom) scandalised society when she conducted a wild and tempestuous relationship on the estate with Romantic poet Lord Byron. This culminated in Lady Caroline’s public disgrace and her spirit continues to haunt Brocket Hall to this day. Estate Members are automatically granted honorary membership of the Arts and Wine Clubs. The Arts & Entertainments Club offers not just the chance to enhance understanding and

appreciation of Brocket Hall’s magnificent environment, but also a far wider selection of cultural events and entertainment. Arts & Entertainment Club members are invited to choose from an all-encompassing catalogue of events throughout the year. Club events include, but are not limited to; visiting exhibitions and shows hosted at Brocket Hall; talks and classes; priority access to galleries and openings; musical events, book launches with the many interconnected partner establishments. One of the first prestigious partners to work with Brocket Hall is the Cadogan Contemporary Gallery in Chelsea, a centre of artistic excellence for the last 30 years which constitutes an exhilarating start to the year’s programme. Arts Club members will be taken on a giftwrapped journey throughout all aspects of the art world, supported by expert guidance and if required, sound investment advice. Brocket Hall is also partnering with curatist, collectibles expert and art investments specialist Jiggy Rawal, who will share her extensive knowledge of the global art markets in her capacity as a professional ‘treasure hunter’. As well as staging a classic car event, Jiggy is hosting information workshops to discuss her long association with top jewellers such as Boodles and Fabergé with accompanying advice on gem sourcing and jewellery design. The Lord Byron Fine Wine Club builds on a grand old Brocket Hall tradition of enjoyment, sociability and a connoisseur’s appreciation of the best wines the world can offer. As well as conviviality and comfort, a member of the Lord Byron Wine Club enjoys access to wine tastings and sommelier selections as well as opportunities to attend wine estate tours, gourmet evenings to explore the perfect pairings of wine and food and investment guidance. FIRE UP THE GETAWAY CAR! LONDON CLASSIC CAR SHOW ExCeL London, 15-18 February 2018

THE DETAILS

T

elevision star and confirmed petrol-head Philip Glenister is to curate the special ‘Getaway Cars’ display at the 2018 London Classic Car Show – The capital’s biggest and best classic car spectacular. Famous for ‘firing up’ his Audi quattro as throwback DCI Gene Hunt in Ashes to Ashes – Glenister will be maximising his insider police knowledge to bring together this showcase of cars as chosen by notorious crooks to evade the law whether on celluloid or in real life. Vehicles already on the shortlist include a number of criminal classics such as the MK1 Transit van, Jaguar Mark 2, Sierra Cosworth Sapphire and, perhaps, even a Mini Cooper S as famously employed by Charlie Croker (Michael Caine) and his gang to escape from the Carabinieri di Torino in the original Italian Job movie. “We will take our inspiration from TV, films and real life,” said Glenister who also co-presents Channel 4’s motoring show For the Love of Cars programme. “These cars need to be quick, handle well and, of course, have lots of room in the back. I’m sure we’ll have an iconic red quattro exhibited somewhere at the show, but this display will be about cars from the other side of the law. It’s pleasure to curate at such a special car show and where better to celebrate getaway cars than in East London at ExCel. Fire up the London Classic Car Show!” The 2018 London Classic Car Show will once again feature a number of special displays focusing on classic icons from the past. Car Club Square is a welcome returnee. The country’s leading one-make clubs will be staging displays of their

42 JANUARY 2018

favourite machines, with club members on-hand to discuss the merits of their chosen marque or model. Another feature to make a popular return is The Grand Avenue, a ground-breaking all-action roadway running through the very centre of the show and along which some of the world’s greatest classic road and competition cars will be driven. It means The London Classic Car Show is no mere a static exhibition but a living, breathing tribute to the automobile… where else can you see Le Mans winners, Grand Prix racers, classic supercars and century-old veterans in action in the centre of the capital? All those wishing to see the Getaway Car display, can take advantage of significant discounts on offer for those booking in advance.

If purchased now, adult admission costs just £25 (£30 on the door) and a range of upgraded Premium and Family Tickets are also available online. Tickets also include entry to the London Classic Car Show’s sister show Historic Motorsport International, which celebrates the UK’s leading role in all areas of historic motor sport. Full details can be found on the show’s official website – thelondonclassiccarshow.co.uk.

New polo pony sculpture is unveiled internationally

Charles and Abbe Elliott at British designer brand ‘Elliott of London’, have unveiled the latest editions to their new equestrian sculpture range.

Y

oung British sculptor Charles Elliott and his wife professional showjumper Abbe Elliott, have worked together to further their new luxury equestrian range. Initially working on a simplistic horse sculpture, 24 year old Charles has now pushed his skills and knowledge further to a new polo pony sculpture as well as a new race horse sculpture, both complete with tack and rider. Both pieces have a vast amount of detail and movement, created using a 8mm round material with a natural curving style. Handcrafted in their Buckinghamshire studio using traditional blacksmithing and modern metal manipulating techniques, their new equestrian sculptures are inspired by his wife’s love of horses. Alongside travelling the world jumping her string of horses professionally, Abbe has a lot of input into Charles’s design and building process of their equestrian pieces specifically. Charles says, “We decided we wanted to push our boundaries further by investigating into specific disciplines, we wanted to target individual aspects of the international equestrian world. My wife Abbe helps tremendously with details of muscle layouts and conformation, whilst we look through piles of close ups of horses in motion. She is very critical of our work and a perfectionist when it comes to the 44 JANUARY 2018

horses, whether it be in art or in real life!” Charles spends months, sometimes years, working on each of his pieces and have had a great response of its unveiling on their website and on facebook. Elliott of London Sculptures are available internationally, with transport shipping and installation services available worldwide. With interest and enquiries from New Zealand, US and Europe already, the initial unveiling of these one off pieces look to be a great success for The Elliott’s and their team.

Mike Bernard Collage and Acrylic Contemporary Art Born in Kent in 1957 award-winning leading artist Mike Bernard trained at the West Surrey College of Art & Design, Farnham, followed by postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy Schools

Clockwise from right: Summer Rain, Trafalgar Square; St Paul’s; City Lights, London; Chelsea Potter, King’s Road

S

ince then he has exhibited widely in London and the provinces. The artist was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1997. He moved to Devon in 2008 where he has been inspired by the amazing light. Mike Bernard enjoys experimenting with media and techniques, often using mixed media incorporating collage and acrylics. Mike has used paper collage for several years and has developed a highly original and appealing style of his own. As a base to his paintings it has allowed him to create abstract structures that in turn develop into those “happy accidents” which come about from time to time. Random textures, colours and shapes suddenly fall into place. This method allows picture to evolve their own personality as they progress, which avoids them becoming over-representational. Mike’s initial starting point was collecting on the spot sketches, with subjects varying from harbour coastal scenes to street and market scenes and occasional still life. He is selective when describing detail, wanting to portray only the essence of the subject. Back in the studio he starts his paintings, (surfaces can include, paper, board and canvas), with layers of paper collage, newspapers, tissue, leaflets, magazines etc, glueing with acrylic medium. Mike can create shapes which relate to the abstract structure of the subject. When the glue is dry, he applies acrylic ink in bold random strokes which encourages wonderful colour and textural ‘happy accidents’. From this state of chaos he endeavours to definite the subject through various

46 JANUARY 2018

drawing techniques, to a finished stage where the subject has recognisable passages, but at the same time retains a semi- abstract, impressionistic feel, engaging the viewers imagination. Mike now paints almost exclusively in mixed media, combining collage, acrylics and pastel. He enjoys the way textures, shapes, colour and ‘happy accidents’ steer the direction of his paintings. Mike’s favourite subjects continue to be harbour scenes, market and street scenes both in Britain and abroad. If you would like to enquire about purchasing one of Mike’s paintings, please email him with the painting you are interested in and he will be able to confirm availability, price etc. Commissions are also undertaken. The Listed Property Owners’ Club

Six simple steps to protect your listed home “Chimney stacks and parapets are particularly exposed and vulnerable so look out for open joints where mortar joints may be letting water in”

L

isted buildings rely on regular inspection and maintenance to keep them in good repair and to prevent more serious problems developing. Spotting potential problems is not difficult, here The Listed Property Owners’ Club share six simple steps to ensure you protect your home’s unique history and character.

STEP 1: CHECK THE ROOF Check ridge tiles which sometimes come loose and need to be re-bedded. Use binoculars to look for any damage to lead flashings or mortar fillets at the junction of the roof with walls, parapets or chimney stacks. Check in the loft to see if there is any evidence of leaks or gaps in the roof covering.

STEP 2: CHECK THE CHIMNEY STACKS Chimney stacks and parapets are particularly exposed and vulnerable so look out for open joints where mortar joints may be letting water in.

STEP 3: CHECK THE GUTTERS AND DOWNPIPES Check that gutters are not blocked by leaves, that they fall effectively towards the downpipes, and that the joints are not leaking. Look for cracks or rust on cast iron rainwater goods.

STEP 4: CHECK THE DRAINS Check that drains are not blocked by leaves and debris and that the traps are free flowing. Flush through rainwater gullies with a bucket of water or a high pressure hose to remove any sludgy deposits.

STEP 5: CHECK THE WALLS Check for cracks or areas where damp is presenting a problem and that any airbricks are not blocked. 48 JANUARY 2018

Cracked, flaking or blistering paintwork is a sure sign that decoration is required. If you are concerned about any more serious defects consult a competent conservation builder, a conservation engineer or a conservation surveyor. The Listed Property Owners’ Club can help you find someone local to you.

STEP 6: CHECK YOUR HOME INSURANCE POLICY Despite your best efforts to maintain and conserve your listed home, there are some eventualities that can’t be prepared for. Should the worst happen, would your insurance policy provide adequate cover? A quick chat with the LPOC Insurance team will help reveal any hidden nasties in your current policy, and make sure that you and your listed home are fully protected. Versace Tower is about to light up the multibillion pound Nine Elms regeneration zone, in the shape of a designer piece of property for those who love a label. Thanks to a collaboration with Italian fashion house Versace, 50-storey Aykon London One will be the glitziest tower on the block. The £600million tower, dubbed the ‘Jenga tower’ because of its appearance, is due to open in 2020. A studio can be bought for £747,000, with onebedroom apartments from £1,116,000, and twobedroom flats from £1,877,000. As the floors start to rise, so do the prices. A top-floor duplex would set you back £13 million. Choose from studios to one, two and three bedroom arrangements, finished to the highest standards, with special ‘winter gardens’, offering stunning panoramic views of the city. Even the

chandeliers in the residents’ lounge are gold-plated filigree, while “V” for Versace Home is in marble patterns inlaid into the walnut floors at the entrance to each apartment. For their money, buyers certainly get plenty of Versace branding in their homes. The style house’s trademark Greek key decorates splashbacks, kitchen islands and mirrors in the white marble bathrooms, while master bedrooms are decorated with lavish amounts of pale gold-and-cream Versace wallpaper. Residents will enjoy in-house dining, a concierge, a cinema, a state-of-the-art gymnasium plus a luxury swimming pool and spa - all tricked up in Versace’s trademark maximal style of opulent colours and fabrics. Even the children’s playroom has a patchwork Versace carpet in primary colours, plus a double-height yellow slide and designer chairs. Each of the building’s outdoor spaces will be unique, with its own focal sculptures, water features and landscaping aesthetic, all complemented by stylish furniture and specialist lighting. Nine Elms is already home to the New Covent Garden Market, the brand-new US Embassy and Battersea Power Station, a cherished feature of the London skyline. It’s also blessed with almost two miles of Thames river frontage, and will be lined with cafés, bars, restaurants, cultural attractions and public space as part of the planned regeneration. Since construction work on “Versace Tower” began in August, 170 of its 360 homes have sold. Unsurprisingly, many overseas buyers have taken the bait, from the Gulf States, Hong Kong, Russia, Iran and Pakistan. Developers have come under fire for selling highly priced flats at Nine Elms to overseas buyers before addressing the British market. www.aykonlondonone.com

THE WEDDING SHOP A GIFT LIST LIKE NO OTHER

T

heir award winning service is designed for couples who want unrivalled choice, flexibility and exceptional service all in one place. Combine products you love with honeymoon and cash contributions, monthly subscriptions and even add a charity fund that is close to your heart. To help you build your dream gift list. The Wedding Shop’s Gift Guru Alice shares her top tips:

FUTURE PROOF YOUR LIST “When looking around your home it can be hard to see the need for a twelve piece dinner set or additional glassware. However, it’s good to remember that your gifts are bought by your loved ones to mark the start of your new married life together and will build the foundation for your future home. So, pick gifts that are going to stand the test of time and that you will cherish in years to come. You won’t regret it, even if your other half does grumble about storage space!”

MAKE IT PERSONAL “Guests like to know they are contributing to something special and personal to you. So the most important thing is to have fun choosing gifts that you absolutely love. Don’t feel you need to choose just practical gifts or gifts you think your guests want to buy. Your quirky picks are what makes your gift list completely unique to you.”

COVER ALL BASES “Even if you only really want cash, we suggest adding physical gifts to your list too. Guests always prefer the choice of both. Your list is the perfect opportunity to update and upgrade your tired home essentials, so there will always be something that you need. When it comes to creating your cash funds, be specific. Guest like to know exactly what their contributions are going towards and what you have planned for the cash.”

ADD MORE THAN YOU THINK “You will be so surprised at how generous your guests are, so make sure you have added enough so that your guests don’t run out of options to choose from. It is also good to pick gifts at different price points so that everyone can buy you something you’ll love, regardless of their budget.”

BUILD YOUR LIST ON THE GO! Download The Wedding Shop’s handy new app and use the barcode scanner to add gifts to your list while out and about. Genius!

What our couples say… “Just a little message to say we really would highly recommend The Wedding Shop to all our nearest and dearest. They have been so thoughtful and on hand to help the whole time. Roman Baths & Pump Room Situated at the heart of the World Heritage site, the Roman Baths and Pump Room was recently voted Best Historic Wedding Venue in the 2017 UK Wedding Awards, and is without doubt one of the most distinctive and unique buildings in the country. Not only is there nothing like it in the world, it also provides a fantastic opportunity to be married in the open air but remain under cover, safe from the unpredictable British weather. What could be more romantic than exchanging your vows next to the torchlit, steaming waters of the Great Bath in one of our Sunrise or Sunset ceremonies? The Great Bath is continuously filled with hot flowing water which rises up bubbling from deep underground, warmed by the heat of the earth’s core. Surrounding this bath is 2000 year old paving, where couples can exchange their vows amid the flickering torchlight and rising steam. Beyond the classical statues on the Terrace above, Bath Abbey will be illuminated whilst guests can gather and enjoy a stunning and atmospheric wedding. Josephine Stevens

Tell me a bit about yourself and your company. I’ve always been creative and loved the outdoors. As a child I’d spend hours outside in the garden helping my parents prune the roses and plant tulip bulbs. I trained at Italia Conti Academy of theatrical arts and performed in West End shows as a singer/ dancer for a number of years. I was frequently sent the most beautiful bouquets during the run from a florist stand outside the theatre on Seven Dials. Once I left the theatre world I struggled to find something that gave me the same passion. By chance a leaflet was popped through my door advertising a floristry course at my local university which caught my attention. I enrolled and am delighted to say it reignited my creative fire and reminded me how much I love working with natural materials. It was totally fate looking out for me and I’ve never looked back. I created Petal and Wild flowers to appeal to the bride who wants something completely unique and elegant on their wedding day. My style is romantic and natural, like flowers just picked from a country garden. I enjoy working with a loose brief so I can really be creative and design something stunning and enchanting for the big day. Where do you get inspiration from? I get inspiration from so many sources, including the natural beauty of the English countryside. Pinterest and Instagram are great online tools too as they give you access to amazing floral designs from around the world. 70 JANUARY 2018

What is your favourite part of being a wedding florist? I love the early morning trips to Covent Garden Flower market shopping for my blooms and the excitement to see what’s new in and what is in season. I also love seeing the bride’s reaction to her flowers on the wedding morning. It’s such a wonderful feeling after months of planning to know you’ve been a part of making someone’s special day look beautiful. What plans do you have in the future? More weddings and more beautiful flowers! I’ve got some gorgeous weddings booked for next year at amazing venues, it’s a privilege and I’m very grateful to work with such lovely brides. www.petalandwild.co.uk; 07976 881505 Photography: Camilla J Hards Photography & Sabine Darrall

top tips for brides Let your florist know your budget from the very start. It’s much easier to advise on designs and flowers to achieve the look you are after if we have this information. If you love expensive flowers such as peonies, ask your florist to use them in your bouquet and find a more economical substitute for the table flowers if your budget will not stretch. Ask your florist to choose flowers that are in season, it doesn’t mean they are necessarily cheaper but means they are better quality and at their best. It will also help to encompass the time year you have chosen to get married in. Choose a few larger arrangements, rather than lots of smaller vases or jars if you really want to make an impact on your wedding day. Pedestal arrangements and pew ends can be re-used from the ceremony and repositioned in the reception area afterwards to help make the most of your flowers.

MAGNUMS

Magnums make a great first impression and these five look and taste impressive. WORDS: Sam Wylie-Harris

W

e’re fizzing with delight that so many of our favourite bubbles are available in bumper size. Helping to deliver the wow factor, a magnum makes a great first impression and, not only do they feel special and look impressive, they’re also hugely practical on a grand scale. The next size up from a 75cl bottle, 1.5 litres is the equivalent to two standard bottles and will serve 12 x 125ml glasses, and create some wonderful theatre while keeping your guests happy. To help guide you through the supermarket’s spectrum of sparkle, we caught up with five of our favourite retailers to hear their thoughts on how to double the drinking pleasure...

76 JANUARY 2018

San Leo Prosecco DOC Magnum, Italy “We’ve seen an increase in magnum sales over the last few years. Magnums of red, white and fizz are all popular at this time of year, with the San Leo Prosecco topping the list of bestsellers,” says Becky Hull, champagne and sparkling buyer, Waitrose. “It’s the perfect party drink. A showstopping bottle bursting with citrus-rich character and bundles of charm.” £20.99, Waitrose M&S Prosecco Magnum, Italy “Magnums are the perfect party piece, they add that extra sparkle to the table and really set the tone of a special occasion,” says Emma Dawson, M&S wine buyer. “Any wine ages more slowly in a magnum, which also means you can count on them to show wines at their best. With sparkling wines this means they preserve their fruit flavours really well. “Prosecco without a doubt will be our biggest seller this year. Our customers love that fizz in any shape or size. But why stop with a magnum when you can also buy a jeroboam (the equivalent of four bottles or three litres)?” However, you may need a strong person to lift the bottle and pour. £21, Marks & Spencer Tesco Finest Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Magnum, Italy “We are excited to offer two of our fantastic proseccos in magnum format,” says Rob Dixon, champagne and sparkling buyer, Tesco. “Large

format bottles will bring excitement and show to any party, and our Tesco Finest Valdobbiadene Prosecco Magnum is cheaper than buying two bottles, and you can still fit it in your fridge, unlike some of the larger formats” A quality prosecco, it’s utterly delicious with plenty of white orchard fruits and pretty aromatics. £19, Tesco, in-store only Taste the Difference Cremant de Loire NV, Magnum, France Sainsbury’s Cremant de Loire launched last autumn and they’re now selling it in a magnum - it makes an affordable French alternative to Champagne. The chenin blanc based bubbles are made in the same way as champagne using the methode traditionnelle and it’s rich on the palate, yet has a zesty apple freshness. Perfect served as an aperitif with canapes and party bites, so ideal for any wedding. £22, Sainsbury’s, in-store only Henri Delattre Champagne Magnum, France For an attention seeker that boasts good lineage, Lidl have it nailed with their Henri Delattre champers. “If an occasion is made more special by a bottle of champagne, imagine the impact of a magnum. Perfect for weddings, this is an attractive, tasty champagne with a dry finish - great on its own or with savoury canapes,” says Richard Bampfield, master of wine consultant. Chin, chin! £29.99, in-store from November 30, Lidl, in-store only

Planning your dream wedding? Where to start… Congratulations on your engagement! Once you have named the date and are ready to start planning for your big day, here are some helpful tips to guide you through the initial steps

TALK TO YOUR PARTNER

SELECT A THEME

Have a conversation about what you and your partner want. Do you wish to have a huge, grand affair or something small and intimate? Do you want to be married in a church, registry office or on the beach in an exotic destination? This conversation will be the foundation for everything else. It will be one of your first conquests as an engaged couple.

A theme could be a colour, a style or an era. Once you have that theme it will make it easier to decide between different options going forward.

START A SCRAPBOOK OR MOOD BOARD Whenever you see something you like, add it to the collection. It could be a hair style, a dream dress or simply a colour swatch. It will help you to visualise what you would like your day to look like and can also be an easy way to eliminate ideas along the way.

START SCOUTING LOCATIONS Do you want the ceremony and reception to be at the same venue? A beachy wedding, somewhere in the forest or a modern and chic venue? The options are limitless, so choose what works for the both of you. Once you have found the perfect location, you can pay the initial deposit to secure the date. You also need to decide whether you want a sit-down meal or a buffet.

SET A BUDGET You might want the lavish, extravagant event you dreamed of since you were a child, but it is always sensible to set a budget however high.

THINK ABOUT YOUR BRIDAL PARTY Bridesmaids, maid of honour, the best man, flower girls and page boys. How many? And who? Think carefully as to who you would like in your party, without upsetting anyone.

START THINKING ABOUT YOUR DRESS Go into wedding dress shopping with an open mind. You might love a photo of a dress in a magazine only to try it on and not feel comfortable in it. Give every style a try, you could be surprised which cut flatters and gives you that wow factor! It can be an exhausting process, so only shop for as long as you are enjoying it or break it up over a few trips to make sure it doesn’t become a chore.

CAPTURING THE DAY Look around for professional photographers with a portfolio that suits the style you like. It’s a good idea to meet them, often photographers will be there long before the first guest arrives and won’t leave your side until the last guest leaves, so it’s essential that you get on well.

THE CAKE AND THE CARS Recommendations for your wedding cake would be ideal, but most wedding cake makers should be able to provide a small sample to help you decide. As for the cars, would you prefer a limo or a horse drawn carriage? Travel in style with what suits you.

START A GUEST LIST This will be an organic document that will change many times during your planning process, so don’t be too quick to lock it in. Factors like venue capacity, access and ability to travel and cost will all come into play . Write everyone down at first and then you can work with your partner to refine it closer to the time to send out invitations.

ENTERTAINMENT Would you prefer a live band, or a DJ? or both? If you can get recommendations it would be valuable. If not, you need to see them in action before you book them! You might also want to add some entertainment to keep children amused, while you and your guests can enjoy the celebrations without having to worry too much about bored or misbehaving little ones. Remember, this is you and your partner’s day to celebrate your love for one another, so don’t worry too much about pleasing everybody else. 86 JANUARY 2018

Discovering Your Dream Wedding Venue Q&A with Kellie Coleshill, Wedding Co-Ordinator at Laura Ashley The Manor

K

ellie has been helping happy couples achieve their dream day since April 2014. Her favourite feature at Laura Ashley The Manor is the giant chess board in the gardens– perfect for posing! Q. What should a couple look for in their perfect venue? First impressions count, so go with your instincts! Look out for the décor, character, ambience – and not forgetting those all-important photo opportunities! Most couples will know they’ve found “The One” the moment they walk through the door. Q. What season would you advise for a wedding? This is such a personal choice, but every season has its specialities. Wintertime at Laura Ashley The Manor is sparkling with Christmassy touches Christmas trees, fairy lights, and flickering candles give the whole place an air of magic! In the spring and summer months, you can really take advantage of the stunning 10 acres of gardens surrounding The Manor, and during autumn the woodland is bursting with stunning reds and oranges. Q. What tips would you give for choosing a menu? Ensure you go for a menu tasting! It can be a challenge to keep all your guests happy when it comes to the food, so it’s advisable to keep it classic.

Most venues are quite flexible with their menus, so don’t be afraid to ask questions and chat to the chef if possible. The Head Chef of our award-winning Cavendish restaurant is always on hand to meet with couples to ensure we get it just right for them. Q. What’s your favourite part of a wedding day? The Heads of the Schools, Dr Gary Savage of Alleyn’s, Dr Joe Spence of Dulwich College, and Sally-Anne Huang of JAGS, anticipate the concert to be a memorable evening of music and commemoration, and a wonderful opportunity for their communities to give rightful thanks to all those who went before them. All are welcome. Tickets at a range of prices from £15 to £45 are available from the Southbank Centre: 0844 847 9913; www.southbankcentre.co.uk

The GOLD Standard

Fairley House School, described by the Sunday Times as the ‘Gold Standard’, is London’s leading day school for children with Specific Learning Difficulties

A

ddressing the needs of children from the age of five, who require assistance due to dyslexia and dyspraxia, the school has a staff/ pupil ratio of 1:3.5 and the average stay at the school is between two to three years. Children then return to mainstream schooling with a new ‘can do’ attitude. Fairley House now offers Key Stage 4. This enables pupils to carry on their education in an environment that ensures that their

needs are fully met. While our intention is to enable your child to re-join mainstream education as quickly as possible, our provision now offers the possibility of remaining in our school to undertake the first major examinations that a pupil will face. Many of our alumni have enjoyed great success at GCSE and A-Level and they have progressed to top universities and have successful careers in a range of professions.

Girls taking centre stage For over 130 years, Channing School in Highgate has been leading the way in girls’ education, offering opportunities to lead, inspire and take on challenges with confidence and character. We caught up with Headmistress Mrs Barbara Elliott to discover Channing’s winning formula…

‘I

’m often asked what makes Channing such a unique school,’ says Mrs Elliott, who has been at the helm of Channing for 12 years. In that time, she has overseen a transformational, multi-million pound development programme. “I think our vision statement ‘Girls Enjoying Success’ sums up our ethos. It puts our pupils at the heart of everything we do. We are an academic school - just look at our results! - but we firmly believe that girls must discover their own talents and passions. Channing School helps them realise their ambitions.’ The £13m development programme wrapped up this summer, with the completion of a state-of-theart Performing Arts Building, which is clearly visible from Highgate Hill. ‘It is no coincidence that our recent investments have focussed on Drama, Music (a bespoke Music School with over 300 individual lessons every week), Sport (a double-height hall with fitness suite) and healthy food - we have an extended dining room where our in-house caterers serve the most delicious meals). We have always been committed to offering a broad and exciting curriculum and our pupils will now benefit hugely from the new facilities.’ Channing also prides itself on spotting potential in girls who apply for a place. “It is, sadly true, that we are over-subscribed, but my team and I look for intellectual curiosity and ambition in candidates as we know that these girls will benefit most from a Channing education. In essence, these are girls who are keen to learn and who will make a positive contribution to our caring school community.’ says Mrs Elliott. ‘We prioritise creativity, resilience and collaboration here - all things that we know will best prepare girls for success in the future’.

100 JANUARY 2018

And what can parents do to help? ‘Parents are vital partners at Channing. They can support by making sure that their daughters are well-fed, well-rested and ‘ready to learn’. It also helps if their daughters have observed the value they place on a good education by seeing their parents’ intellectual curiosity in action: learning, reading, thinking deeply and enjoying the experience. We should all model the behaviours we want to nurture in our young people. If you’d rather spend all evening looking at a screen, why would your children want to read a book, play an instrument, engage in discussion and think deeply?’ Girls Enjoying Success - come and see for yourself at one of Channing’s Open Day events. For more information about Channing School, please visit www.channing.co.uk. Or contact the Registrar, Maureen McHarg, on 020 8340 2328 for all enquiries. More than An Exam Score… D avid Bradbury, headmaster at leading independent school Portland Place School, and firm advocate that education is ‘more than just an exam score’ shares his advice for parents who are keen to ensure that their children receive an all-round, holistic education. He has a B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics, an MSc. and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Keele as well as an MA in Education from the Open University. He is a member of the Institute of Physics (MInstP), a Chartered Physicist (CPhys) and a member of the Association for Science Education. There is so much pressure on pupils today to achieve top results throughout their academic life. However, I firmly believe that as educators we have to develop skills of enquiry, critical thinking, adaptability and resilience that will equip pupils to constantly and effectively learn throughout their lives. This builds confidence, and in turn creative thinking which enables them to look for solutions which will not only aid them greatly when faced with a complex exam question, but also allows them to think outside the box. A key life skill. We live in a time when people will expect to have two, three or more distinctly different careers in their working life. We are educating pupils to enter careers that may not exist yet. All of this takes time and means not only allowing, but encouraging pupils to try, with guidance, different approaches to learning; allowing pupils to fail and then, with guidance, to revisit their learning and improve. This is what skilled, excellent, teachers do. The learning pupils achieve is embedded forever – as is the confidence and resilience it builds in their own capacity to learn and adapt that learning. As a result, over time, pupils make much better progress in their learning as a whole – that adding great value to their educational journey.

About Portland Place School Portland Place School is a leading independent coeducational school for children aged 9-18, located directly in the heart of the City of Westminster. It was founded with a particular purpose in mind: to 102 JANUARY 2018

be an alternative to the intense, large, examination focused independent day schools of which there are many in London. The school ethos is to be small, nurturing and be relaxed, encouraging and enabling their pupils to achieve their very best academically, with space to develop and express their creativity and athleticism. Staff and pupils at this leading school recently celebrated not only a high record of five plus A*-C grades at A Level with 85% achieving this, but also being placed in the top 10% of schools nationally for progress based on Value Added Scores for A-Levels – the difference between what a pupil achieves, in comparison to what they were expected to receive. The Good School Guide describes the school as ‘small, nurturing and refreshingly relaxed. A haven of creativity in the pushy, academically competitive world of London day schools. A place for engaged, lively, normal kids.’ For more information on the school visit: www.portland-place.co.uk or call 020 7307 8700.

House Schools Group

Bassett House, Orchard House and Prospect House are the family of schools known as House Schools Group, all members of IAPS.

A

ll three schools share a similar ethos, celebrating each individual child, and helping him or her to achieve his or her full potential. Each class usually has no more than 20 children, the Early Years have at least three teaching adults per class; small groups and 1:1 teaching is commonplace throughout all year groups. The schools do not test children as young as 3-4 years old, as this can be both misleading and stressful for parents and child alike; instead they adopt a ‘first come, first served’ policy, so early registration is advised to avoid disappointment. They are firm believers in boys and girls learning together and learning from each other: after all, life is co-ed.

House Schools believe that children blossom when they are in a happy environment and each feels secure and valued. Accordingly the children are taught that mistakes are not failures, but a positive sign they are trying; their efforts are always encouraged. The schools set great store by their pastoral policy and Orchard House’s innovative tool to monitor children’s emotional wellbeing was recently shortlisted for a national award. A very happy atmosphere and high-calibre teaching staff ensure that all the schools produce excellent academic results, geared towards 11+ entry to the top London senior schools and boarding schools. A belief in an all-round education prevails, building character, developing social skills and learning the value of endeavour and resilience. To this end, the schools have extensive extra-curricular clubs and offer a wide range of sport, music and drama within the school day. The children also go on a number of residential adventures, such as a bushcraft activity trip where the children build their own shelter and then sleep in it under the stars, sleepovers in the Science Museum and a week’s trip to a château in France where only French is spoken. Each of the schools has a strong parents’ association and also runs a bursary scheme (through the independent charity, House Schools Trust). These are happy high achieving schools where children thrive and realise the limit of their abilities.

Titanic for Tourists

“The complexity of the voyage goes some way to explaining its price: £86,500 per person. Taking into account inflation, the price is equivalent to the $4,350 a first-class passenger would have paid to sail on the Titanic’s maiden voyage in 1912”

122 JANUARY 2018

R

esting at a depth of 13,000ft, the RMS Titanic continues to captivate the world more than one hundred years after it sunk to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean. It has just been announced that those still intrigued by the vessel will be able to see it for themselves by joining diving trips to the shipwreck next year. London-based tour operator Blue Marble Private are now accepting applicants for the eightday journeys in May 2018, organised by OceanGate Expeditions. This lifetime opportunity will be open to just

nine clients at a time - beginning their experience by flying by helicopter, or seaplane from St John’s, Newfoundland to the expedition support yacht set somewhere above the wreck. The small group of privileged visitors will be taught about the ship’s workings on their second day on board by its crew and guest explorers, scientists and expedition crew. Those who wish to engage more directly with the workings of the ship have the chance to take part in orientation sessions and can “assist” the crew in planning a dive, operating the sonar and using the undersea navigation system. It’s on days 3-6 that the expedition is at its most exciting… Weather permitting, up to three passengers at a time will climb aboard a specially designed titanium and carbon fibre submersible to see the remains of the Titanic itself. Accompanied by a pilot and deep ocean expert, they will sail over the ship’s deck and should even be able to glimpse it’s still famous grand staircase from amongst the debris. Dives will take place throughout the day or night, dependent on when weather conditions are most favourable, and Blue Marble Private’s clients will be expected to contribute to the mission by assisting with sub-sea communications and undertaking basic tasks. There will be lectures, discussions, mission updates and dive briefs with deep ocean explorers and scientists. After a debrief and a further day at sea, groups will return to St John’s. As well as being a once-in-a-lifetime experience, seeing the Titanic in person is a privileged experience shared by very few people on the planet. The vessel, which measured more than 880ft long and 100ft tall, went down with the loss of over 1,500 lives on 15th April 1912 during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The complexity of the voyage goes some way to explaining its price: £86,500 per person. Taking into account inflation, the price is equivalent to the $4,350 a first-class passenger would have paid to sail on the Titanic’s maiden voyage in 1912. And all going well, the package could be made available to a limited number in summer 2019.

Celebrity Edge: A new cruise line for young, affluent travellers

C

elebrity Edge changes everything. The way you experience the world; the way you connect with the ocean; the way you play, dine and unwind at sea. Revolutionary on every level, she’s the ship that’s setting a new standard of luxury and innovation at sea. The way you cruise will never be the same again. Teaming up with some of the world’s best designers, Celebrity Cruises have created accommodation that has never before been experienced at sea. Royal Caribbean Cruises will be debuting the first of its five ships in December 2018, and each is projected to cost about $1 billion a piece to construct.

Let’s take a peek inside the world’s most high-tech cruise ship…. New Celebrity Edge Staterooms will feature an infinite balcony – touch a button and your entire living space becomes the balcony, letting you walk right out to the water’s edge. Their new Iconic Suites are the most luxurious and spacious in their fleet; while the six two-storey Edge Villas will boast 950 square feet of split-level, indoor-outdoor splendour. They have even created 178 connecting stateroom options, meaning you can connect different rooms for a whole new space. Guests can spoil themselves rotten with Eucalyptus-treated cashmere mattresses from Italy, Bulgari bath amenities, butler service, packing and unpacking support, and even a bar with a personalised stock! Around the ship, guests can enjoy the resort-style deck with the main pool enclosed by a glass-like dome to allow for all-weather swimming and sunning. Six poolside cabanas will surround the pool as well as a martini-shaped hot tub. The deck is also home to the Solarium, a rooftop garden maintained 126 JANUARY 2018

by a dedicated horticulturist. The garden, designed by Tom Wright (Burj Al Arab Hotel), can be used for dinner and movie nights, private events or theme parties with live music. If you’d like to go for a run in the morning, check out the two-deck jogging track that’ll sit above the ship’s rooftop deck. Among Celebrity Edge’s coolest features will be its “Magic Carpet,” a 90-ton platform that will sit on the side of the ship and will move up and down the vessel depending on the time of day. The size of a tennis court, the platform will move like an elevator along the ship between deck’s two through 16. When stopped on the latter level, guests can enjoy “Dinner on the Edge,” via a 90-seat restaurant that will be open in the evenings. If the Magic Carpet is on Deck 5, it’ll be a lunchtime haunt while on Deck 14 it’ll act as an extension of the pool area. Instead, you get cabins that extend to the end of the ship providing fantastic views and stateroom floor plans that are (on average) 23 per cent larger. Guests will be given RFID-enabled wristbands that enable guests to scan in and out of the ship at port or charge drinks to their rooms. Guests will also be able to check in, control their room temperature and unlock stateroom doors using their smartphone. Making it easier for passengers to make meal reservations or charge drinks to their rooms, guests will have the opportunity to do everything from their smartphones. With an incredible ship designed to highlight the destinations, they have decided to start in the corner of the world so often referred to as ‘paradise’ – the Caribbean. Celebrity Edge offers two sun-soaked itineraries from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When it comes to extraordinary venues, Celebrity has the edge. www.celebritycruises.co.uk

Discover Kasbah du Toubkal

T

he Toubkal National Park, home to the Berbers and to Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, is immediately recognisable as a very special place. Kasbah du Toubkal became a founder member of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World. It is a place that is renowned for its beauty and tranquillity, and for the warmth and the openness of the rigidly individual community in the surrounding valley hamlets. However, although many visitors have tried, it is almost impossible to adequately convey the experience and feelings that this unique environment evokes. The Kasbah du Toubkal is the product of a Berber and European partnership and is an extraordinary venture. Surely no other kind of venture could be so enthusiastically embraced by all who visit and by the local inhabitants. It is not an hotel in the traditional sense. It is more an extension of the hospitality that stems from the home of the Berbers who run it.

130 JANUARY 2018

The Kasbah is a long established part of the local community and has numerous Sustainable Tourism Award for its work in Imlil. There is a shared belief that the National Park should be accessible to all who respect it. To this end the Kasbah provides a variety of accommodation possibilities; the experience has been enjoyed and appreciated by school children and millionaires, by those seeking comfortable and welcoming mountain refuge, and by those who are looking for sanctuary and more luxurious accommodation in a remarkable location. It is the Kasbah’s intention that guests and the local population gain in a positive way from the experience of a visit. Wherever possible the Kasbah sources materials and produce from the local region and has employed local craftsmen and traditional methods in its renovation. The Kasbah has married these values and those relating to respect and responsibility, with values relating to quality and to the provision of the best that the 21st Century can offer. In 1997 The Kasbah set up the Imlil Village Association which is a fund and forum for Community projects. 2007 saw the formation of Education For All www.efamorocco.org an organisation providing the opportunity of a college education for girls from the rural High Atlas Mountains.

Perfect Waves In Just Four Steps

James Pryce reveals a clever trick for creating natural-looking waves without setting foot inside a salon. words: Katie Wright

H

airdressers often talk about their big break, the job that sent their career soaring, but James Pryce’s was bigger than most. He scooped the gig of a lifetime when he was asked to style Kate Middleton’s hair on the day she became the Duchess of Cambridge. How does he feel when he looks back on the Royal Wedding and creating Kate’s famous ‘demi chignon’ style? “I’m incredibly proud. When I look back on it now, it almost seems like it didn’t happen,” he says of the “surreal” day. Sitting in the Abbey waiting for her to come in was really nerveracking but when I saw her silhouetted against the Abbey doors...I felt this flood of emotion come over me. I’m not ashamed to say that I shed a little tear, because my mum had died of cancer a few years before that and I know how proud she would have been of me.” James, who comes from a family of hairdressers

and now works at London’s Larry King salon, says he doesn’t see Kate “as often as I used to,” but he remains the Middleton family hairdresser, and was responsible for Pippa Middleton’s latest chop, explaining that the “really cool bob” was chosen because Kate’s sister wanted to switch up her look post-wedding. “I think a lot of women grow their hair out for their wedding and I find a lot of my clients want to have a bit of a change afterwards, it was basically that.” After 22 years in the industry, wedding hair isn’t his only speciality, however. “I’m a big advocate of using what nature gave you, it’s kind of my strapline,” he says, which is why we were so keen to grill James on how to get those gorgeous, effortless-looking waves that every longhaired beauty on Instagram has these days. Surely they require a trip to the salon or hours slaving over the curling tongs? “No, absolutely not,” he insists. “A lot of people have a little bit of a wave in their hair naturally, and waves and curls are very much in at the moment. So I try and give my clients tips for how to do their hair on their own at home.” The hair pro has got an amazingly easy method for achieving those waves we all want - and it doesn’t involve tongs or a barrel brush. Here’s James foolproof four-step guide to your easiest at-home blow-dry ever.

Start with freshly-washed damp hair “Everyone’s hair is different so I couldn’t really recommend a particular shampoo, but often curly hair can be a little dryer so I might recommend a more moisturising shampoo.”

Add a curl-enhancing product

Redken Curvaceous Full Swirl Cream Serum, £11.20, available from LookFantastic

“With the right products, you can really coax out your natural curl. Redken do a beach spray and a spiral curl cream that I’d recommend. Apply the product all over then comb it through.” Redken Beach Envy Volume Wave Aid, £11.55 and Redken Curvaceous Full Swirl Cream Serum, £11.20, both available at LookFantastic.com

Twist and blow dry “I’ve been asking my clients to dig out those old diffusers, they usually have one at the back of the cupboard. When it’s wet, twist the hair in 50p-sized chunks, quite big chunks, and then diffuse it to really encourage the natural curl. You just pop the hairdryer on and hold the hair next to the diffuser.” The Airshot, £99, and The Airshot Diffuser, £15, from Cloud Nine

Add texture Redken Beach Envy Wave Aid, £11.55, available from LookFantastic

“If you want to increase texture, use Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. I rarely use hairsprays any more, it’s more like a dry shampoo. It doesn’t make the hair go hard, it’s slightly powdery and gives it a really nice texture.” Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, £41, Space NK

TAP INTO FASHION’S SEVENTIES TREND This decade is back in a big way this season, and we couldn’t be more pleased. Here’s how to get the look. WORDS: Katie Wright

This season’s iterations come with a modern twist. We love the oversized flight jackets and bright hues - throw one on over a mini dress, tights and boots, a la the Marc Jacobs catwalk. Warehouse Faux Leather Hooded Oversized Biker Jacket, £110; Lost Ink Sparkly Bell Sleeve Shirt, currently reduced to £40 from £45; YAS Khaki Skirt, currently reduced to £45 from £55, all Littlewoods; ASOS Faux Shearling Coat, £70

YAS Joni Yellow Shirt, £35, available from Very

The Seventies blouse What makes a blouse fit the Seventies spec? Three things. First, it’s got to have a high collar. Second, it’s got to have ruffles or ties of some kind. And third, it’s got to be the right colour - something rich like chocolate brown, russet or ochre (a combination of several is also allowed). Zara High Collar Blouse with Belt, £25.99; High Waist Mom Fit Jeans, £25.99; YAS Joni Yellow Shirt, currently reduced to £26.25 from £35, Very

W

hat would fashion do without Marc Jacobs? The New York designer is such a visionary that every season you can guarantee, no matter what he sends down his runway, it will end up, in one guise or another, on the high street. For AW17, that’s especially true, because MJ’s standout catwalk collection, debuted back in February, has been a springboard for the Seventies revival that’s taking over the fashion world now. Marc’s big fleecy coats (with even bigger collars), natty tweeds, and a spectrum that ranged from mustard to burgundy, were echoed with pussyblouses at Chloe and retro checks at Mulberry, and now the shops are full of cosy copycats. It’s a mood that feels so right for autumn, and as it’s based around separates it’s easy to mix, match and clash textures. It’s all aboard the Soul Train with these Seventies-inspired essentials...

The perfect partner for your high-necked, ruffled Seventies blouse comes by way of a heritage check skirt. Look out for tweedy Prince of Wales prints or tartans in subdued colours - if it looks like a kilt, you’re on the right lines. Laura Ashley Check Skirt, £65; River Island Skirt, £40

The soft touches A shiny leather handbag would jar with all those tactile textures, so the finishing touch for your Seventies ensemble (besides a pair of suede boots, obviously) should be a slouchy bag in fluffy faux fur. So soft, and so stylish too. Cath Kidston Faux Fur Clutch, £45

ASOS Faux Shearling Coat, £70, available from ASOS

Laura Ashley Check Skirt, £65, available from Laura Ashley

The shearling jacket Yet to commit to a winter coat? We don’t blame you, there are so many snuggly beauties to choose from this year. But the toastiest of them all has got to be the Seventies-style sheepskin jacket, with its fuzzy lining and sturdy fabric. 144 JANUARY 2018

London Vein Centre Expands with NEW Harley Street Clinic for 2018 C Varicose Veins

osmedics Skin Clinics has announced plans for a new vein treatment centre on London’s Harley Street, set to open during January 2018. The clinic will offer a range of private vein removal services using state of the art laser technology to treat varicose veins, thread veins, spider veins and broken capillaries on the legs, face and body. Harley Street will be the company’s second ‘London Vein Treatment Centre’, after the first was opened in Putney, South West London, in 2014. The concept offers a ‘one stop shop’ with a range of advanced vein removal treatments catering for all types of vein problems. The latest vein treatments are fast and effective in treating the aesthetic problems caused by visible veins as well as the discomfort involved in more severe varicose vein conditions. As a private company, Cosmedics Skin Clinics offers treatments which would not be offered on the NHS and patients can benefit from earlier treatment too. Medical Director Dr Ross Perry MBBS, explains the three most common vein problems and the latest solutions offered at his London Vein Treatment Centres.

146 JANUARY 2018

Dr Perry says: “Varicose veins affect up to 3 out of every 10 adults. These blue/purplish veins usually appear around the calves and ankles, with a twisted and bulky appearance. Over 40% of patients also experience discomfort with aching, painful legs and throbbing veins.” “Nowadays the best treatment for varicose veins is EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation). Laser varicose vein removal boasts a 95.4% success rate significantly higher than older surgical treatments.” “The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and takes 1-2 hours as a walk-in / walkout procedure. People then resume their normal daily activities 1-2 days later. Our patients have been delighted with the results.” The London Vein Treatment Centres offer a one stop diagnosis and treatment with their vascular surgeon, Mr Parameswaran Sridhar, who can also perform ultrasound scans at the clinic, saving busy patients a separate referral and enabling accurate diagnosis for the best possible treatment recommendations. EVLA treatment prices start at £1,550 per vein. Although EVLA treatment is the most popular option, the London Vein Treatment Centres also offer foam sclerotherapy injections for smaller varicose veins and micro-surgery where required so that patients can benefit from the most complete and comprehensive result possible.

Leg Thread Veins Thread veins in the legs are also a very common concern and the London Vein Treatment Centres offer a variety of solutions. Depending on the severity of the veins, these can be treated using IPL laser, micro-cautery laser or sclerotherapy injections. Dr Perry explains: “Thread veins tend to appear on the upper thigh area and backs of the legs are characterised by fine, broken red or purplish visible veins.” “Cosmedics Skin Clinics’ trained Aesthetic Doctors offer laser or micro-cautery treatment for smaller thread veins or sclerotherapy injections for larger ones. Treatments take a matter of minutes and requires 2-3 treatments sessions. Once they understand how easy it is to remove thread veins, most patients are keen to embark on treatment straight away.”

Thread vein removal treatments are carried out by highly skilled and experienced skin doctors and surgeons from Cosmedics Skin Clinics’ hand-picked team. Treatment for thread veins is available at all Cosmedics Skin Clinics in London, with prices from £300.

Facial Spider Veins Spider veins are tiny red veins on the face. They are also sometimes referred to as broken blood vessels or capillaries. They are simply veins so near the surface of the skin that they can be seen. They are not a medical issue, but can cause aesthetic concerns, especially where patches or networks of capillaries lend a ruddiness to the complexion. Cosmedics Skin Clinics’ London Vein Treatment Centre can now treat these facial veins quickly and effectively with laser treatment. The advanced Harmony XL Pro uses selective IPL to target the visible blood vessels, destroying them so that they shrink and disappear. Dr Perry explains: “We are delighted with the results from our Harmony XL Pro laser, which has a remarkably fast impact on fine facial veins with visible results in just one treatment and even better results over a course.” “The treatment is very safe and can be carried out by our specially trained therapists at both of our London Vein Treatment Centres.” Laser treatment for spider veins and facial veins starts at just £195 per session. Facial veins can also be treated using micro-cautery laser which uses short bursts of intense heat to destroy the vein.

London Vein Treatment Centres Varicose vein and IPL laser treatments are exclusively carried out at Cosmedics’ London Vein Treatment Centres. The original clinic is based in Disraeli Road, just off Putney High Street, SW15 and a second branch is opening in January 2018 on Harley Street. Thread vein treatment using microcautery laser or sclerotherapy is available at all of Cosmedics Skin Clinics in London. The company has locations in Harley Street, Knightsbridge and City; as well as the flagship Putney centre. Call 020 7386 0464. If the winter blues are starting to set in, check out these ways to boost your happiness.

GET CREATIVE ABOUT FITNESS Exercise is a great way to beat the blues as it releases mood-boosting endorphins and will also leave you looking great. However, many of us find our workout routine takes a hit when the cold weather sets in. To stay inspired to exercise through the winter months, try searching for something new such as an unusual exercise class or sport. If you can’t face heading out into the cold, find fun ways to exercise at home such as dance fitness DVDs. GET AN INDOOR HOBBY We often give up or postpone many of the activities we love when it gets cold. However, just because you are spending more time indoors, that doesn’t mean your interests and activities have to be reduced to browsing the TV guide for what’s on next. To keep your mind occupied and add some fun to your evenings, try taking up an indoor hobby for the winter. There are many to choose from, such as reading, writing, painting, growing indoor plants, baking or learning a new language. EAT MOOD-BOOSTING FOODS It is tempting to reach for comforting, stodgy foods during the winter; however, research reveals that regular consumers of fast food are 51% more likely to develop depression. Instead, try to fill your diet with nutritious healthy foods; particularly those rich in B vitamins, which help the brain produce serotonin; Omega-3 fatty acids, which can help lift depression; and vitamin D, which you may be short of in the winter months. PERK UP YOUR SOCIAL LIFE As some people retreat more indoors to the warmth of their homes, it can feel as though your social life has gone into hibernation, expect it is Christmas! Spending time with others can be one of the greatest mood boosters. You can’t always rely on other people to make plans, so if your social life

148 JANUARY 2018

could do with a boost, it’s time to get pro-active. Pick up the phone and make plans to spend time with friends and family. Alternatively, take up a hobby or join a club to find some new people to spend time with. LAUGH MORE OFTEN Laughter is an extremely effective mood booster, and studies have found that even the anticipation of laughter can help to lift our spirits and reduce stress. However, many of us don’t laugh nearly enough. While it may seem like a regimented approach to such a laid back and seemingly frivolous activity, try to make sure you dedicate at least 20 minutes a day to something that makes you laugh, such as chatting to a friend, reading a funny book or watching a funny DVD. LIGHTEN UP For many people, the lack of sunlight over the winter months can bring on strong feelings of depression and lethargy. To help improve these symptoms, try to make sure you spend as much time exposed to natural light as you can, leaving your curtains or blinds open, sitting close to windows where possible, and spending some time outdoors each day. It may also be worth investing in a SAD light box which can help to reduce the negative effects caused by the lack of natural light. TREAT YOURSELF To boost your happiness over the winter, it is important to make time for those little things that boost your mood. Make a list of the day-to-day things that make you happy – such as having a catch-up with a friend, having a scented bubble bath, or listening to your favourite song – and make sure you schedule one of these treats into every day. Planning regular treats not only gives you something to look forward to, it can also subtly improve each day.

New Year, New You January is the traditional time to for people to overhaul their health and fitness plans after the excesses of the festive holiday. If you really want to see and feel a difference in your fitness that lasts longer than a few weeks, Joe Reemer, Head of Fitness at 3 St James Square, has the following advice to transform your fitness this year.

Get support If you’ve ever joined a gym and found it to be unfriendly or unhelpful, you’re not alone. A major reason why people fall out of love with the gym is because they don’t get the support and encouragement they need to stick to their fitness goals, especially once the honeymoon period is over and your new member package has faded away. If joining your local gym feels intimidating, save your money and find one that not only supports and welcomes you but gives you the knowledge and power to drive your own regime and get the results you want. Fitness apps can also help you connect with other members and friends to encourage you along the way.

Know your starting point You can spend a fortune on fitness gadgets but the best piece of knowledge is a proper understanding of how your body responds to diet and exercise. What works for your partner or colleague is not necessarily going to deliver the same results for you as everyone is different when it comes to how we respond to food and exercise. People talk about setting new fitness goals in January, but unless you have a clear plan of what you need to do to get where you want to be, you’re going up end frustrated and disheartened by the lack of progress. We offer all new members a full 360 degree internal and external body scan so that they can see their body shape and tone in millimetre precision, giving them a clear point of reference to build on. Nothing is more motivating than seeing the physical evidence that your body is changing and responding

Sweat the small stuff After the holiday excesses, I often hear people saying that they’re going to cut out carbs or stop eating after 6pm. They are usually in a big hurry to drop the extra pounds they have put on and cutting out chunks of calories seems like a good idea. In reality, it’s often small adjustments that can have the biggest effect, not least because these adjustments are so much more sustainable in the long-term. People give up on fitness because they haven’t learnt the skill of balancing diet and exercise, which comes down to getting a good understanding of your unique needs and requirements.

Forget guesswork We presume what is best for our body, without any real evidence to justify it. Our DNA Fit analysis takes away this guesswork by showing clients exactly how their body processes and responds to specific food groups. Once we have this insight, we can devise a diet and fitness plan that makes losing weight and getting fitter as efficient as possible. 150 JANUARY 2018

So, instead of thinking you have to cut out carbs, we might advise reducing certain types in order to reduce inflammation in the gut and help you burn carbs more effectively. If there is one thing guaranteed to derail your fitness goals, it is generic information that doesn’t go far enough to support you.

Perfect your balancing act No-one is perfect so instead of setting yourself stringent rules and targets, be realistic about what you can achieve in the time available to you. There are always going to be times when you will want to overindulge or be too busy to get to the gym. Calculating the unique rate at which you burn calories, known as the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) lets us know exactly how many calories you need to burn in order to create a calorie deficit and start losing weight. Eating what your body needs - rather than what you think it wants - will help get this crucial balance right. You’ll see the results from your workouts and that in turn will keep you coming back for more.

Ignore the quick fixes Jumping on the treadmill on the 2nd of January and trying to out-run your holiday excesses will probably end in an injury! Likewise, tempting as it might be to sign up for that 12-week body transformation, I can almost guarantee you will be back to ‘normal’ within a few weeks. Quick fixes don’t exist when you are making sustainable changes to your diet and fitness. Think about making 100 things 1% better, not trying to make one thing 100% better. Small, everyday changes all add up, such as switching to lower calorie drinks or walking to the tube. Being active isn’t just about being in the gym, but about weaving those small changes into your life. Get your diet and fitness plan right and you’ll soon find it becomes the ‘new normal’, not another new fad or fix. To book 3D body scanning and DNA testing with Joe, please visit: www.3sjs.club

Leah Lodge & Rectory Court Luxury Care Homes in Blackheath

Caring like family At Cinnamon we are fortunate to meet and learn from all sorts of inspiring people as we provide residential, respite and dementia care in our wonderful homes. We shall never forget what a privilege it is to provide care and support to the fascinating people who live with us at Leah Lodge in Blessington Road, Blackheath, and newly opened Rectory Court off Lee Terrace. There is no ‘one size fits all’ in our world, so everything we do is shaped around the needs of the people who live with us. Whether it is the personalisation of care plans, the careful selection of rooms or the choice of a gin and tonic before lunch – people will always come first.

The difference is… the people who work with us Although you can teach people the skills of the job, no-one can be taught the care and compassion that you will find in our teams. You are either born with it or you are not. Everyone who works for Cinnamon embraces the company’s philosophy: they are ‘determined to be the difference’ in the lives of the residents, their families and friends. There is an intrinsic belief that ‘life is for living’, regardless of age. Our people are the real difference – it is as simple as that! Above and beyond, going the extra mile – however you describe it, we can promise that every member of the Leah Lodge and Rectory Court teams has a natural desire to do a little bit more just to make someone’s day.

Delectable dining every day We pride ourselves on providing a superb dining experience using quality ingredients from carefully selected suppliers. Mealtimes are one of the highlights of the day – a time when people come together to socialise in one of our dedicated dining rooms. Our chefs consult with each and every resident to understand their preferences and the menus they 152 JANUARY 2018

plan are a match for any high-quality restaurant. The professional kitchen team thrives on creating delicious and nutritionally balanced dishes including some adventurous recipes to complement the more traditional fare and the home-made cakes and biscuits that are always on offer. Friends and family are always welcome to join us for lunch or dinner and you will often find our Head Chef discussing ideas, recipes and ingredients with residents as they sip on an aperitif.

Inspiring activities Every day is different in our homes and every activity is designed to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the people who live with us. We believe that our residents should shape their own social lives and entertainment which is why they play a central role in planning the calendar of events in our homes. Whether it is an exercise class, a theatre trip, a talk on local history or gardening club, our Social & Events Manager will arrange activities to reflect the interests and hobbies of the people who live with us as well as encouraging new pursuits! At Leah Lodge we have even involved our residents in a ‘Pimp my Zimmer’ activity, customising their mobility aids so they are easier to identify and, as a result, falls have decreased! But for those seeking peace and tranquillity, there are plenty of quiet corners to enjoy a good book and a relaxing cup of coffee.

Community At Cinnamon, we are proud to be well-known and deeply rooted in our community with a reputation for being a welcoming and inspiring place to visit. Our close bonds with the local area encourage visits from schools, places of worship, clubs and community groups so they become a regular feature of life in our care homes. Christmas has seen visits from Riverston School, St Margaret’s Church and a musical group ‘Alberts’ from the Royal Albert Hall, amongst many others.

2018 - The Year of Moving Better I f you’re familiar with Ten Health & Fitness, one of London’s leading Boutique fitness destinations, then you’ll probably have come across their #MoveBetter Campaign. It’s a campaign that shifts the emphasis taken by many of their fellow fitness providers on the quantity of movement, to the quality of movement. Far from an empty marketing slogan, the campaign highlights how improving how you move is the foundation upon which an effective exercise regime is based. Better movement means moving with more strength and power; moving more freely without impingement and pain; moving with better technique, avoiding injury; and moving to maximise the benefits of exercise. It’s about making sure those hours spent working out aren’t wasted, and getting you to the results you want faster.

unscathed. There’s an impact on posture as a result, and this can lead to us developing compensatory movement patterns which cause pain and discomfort over time.

IT’S PERSONAL.

Ten decided that it was time to remind themselves, their clients and hopefully, the fitness industry at large, of the need to move better, rather than just to exercise more and with greater intensity. As a result, Ten’s whole approach, the classes they offer, and the way they teach them, emphasizes the need for correct form and alignment. To that end, class sizes are kept small enough for Ten’s Trainers to provide personal attention and hands-on correction to clients whenever necessary. (Just try doing that with 50 people in a darkened room.) It also helps that Dynamic Reformer Pilates – the discipline they’re best known for and that still makes up the majority of their class schedule – is ideal for setting and reinforcing correct, efficient and safe movement patterns. Whilst #MoveBetter remains a very ‘Ten’ concept, Joanne is adamant that she’d like to see it benefitting a wider audience. “We all want the ability to remain fit, strong, active and injury-free for as much of our lives as possible,” Jo points out, “so I’d really like to see the wider fitness industry, focussing more on quality of movement rather than just intensity of effort. The sooner the better.”

So with impeccable timing, not only for anyone thinking about their new year fitness resolutions, but also for the growing number of people looking for a smarter, more sustainable approach to exercise, we spoke to Ten’s founder, Joanne Mathews, to get the lowdown on #MoveBetter and the impact it could have on your physical health this year. For Joanne, #MoveBetter isn’t just an approach to fitness that’s better suited to the way we live and work today, it’s also hugely relevant to her personally. “Just over 10 years ago,” she says, “I was injured in a car crash – the reason I started Ten in the first place. And though I’m pretty much recovered, one thing I learned from the rehab experience was that the fitness industry was placing way too much focus on the intensity and challenge of workouts rather than the quality of the movement within them.” MoveBetter was born from the realisation that 10 years on, little had changed. With most Londoners racking up their fair share of musculoskeletal and postural own goals – think long deskbound days hunched over laptops and cellphones, impractical shoes, and heavy handbags amongst the prime culprits – few of us get away 154 JANUARY 2018

“FROM WHAT I SEE, IT’S NOT JUST ME.”

Every Ten Trainer starts a class by checking for injuries or areas of weakness. What quickly becomes clear is that everyone has got something - if not an actual injury, then at least a limitation of some sort. And talking to Ten’s Physios, most of the people who say they haven’t, generally have – either they just don’t know it yet, or they’ve had it so long it’s become their normal.

DON’T JUST MOVE MORE. MOVE BETTER.

“Better movement means moving with more strength and power”

THE DETAILS If you’d like to find out more about how Ten can help you improve your quality of movement, whether that be through Pilates, Fitness, Personal Training, Physiotherapy or Massage Therapy, visit ten.co.uk or find them across London with studios in Chiswick, Fitzrovia, Hatton Garden, Mayfair, Maida Vale (Little Venice), Liverpool Street (City), Notting Hill and St James’s.

Lose your double chin Gain a more contoured neck

Before

A

couple of months ago, a patient started telling me about a concert she had been to the night before. “It sounds amazing,” I told her. “Do you have any pictures?” “Angela” took out her phone, and started swiping. It took me a while, but eventually I noticed something strange. There were pictures of the band, of the crowd, and of the group of friends she was with. But absolutely none of her. “No….” she said wistfully, when I pointed it out. “I hate being in pictures. It’s my double chin…” Over the past few years, I’d heard similar comments many times from patients. The age of the selfie and Instagram is tough on many people who are self-conscious about some aspect of their appearance. But facial features like double chins can cause particular upset and anxiety. The result of genetics for some people and weight gain for others, double chins are very ageing, because they change the shape of your face. And they are so difficult to hide. “Polo necks just draw attention to my chin,” “Angela” told me. “I’ve tried loads of different haircuts, but none of them really made a difference. For a while, I tried standing at a particular angle when people took my photo – but I just couldn’t bear to see the results. “Now I’d rather leave the room. But my family has started noticing that I won’t be photographed, which is making me feel even worse…” Unfortunately, double chins are particularly hard to get rid of. They don’t always disappear with weight loss, and you can’t spot-exercise them away, despite thousands of Internet pages telling you otherwise. Until recently, the options with aesthetic medicine were limited to liposuction or fat-dissolving injections, which can be painful. The good news is that there’s now an easy, non-surgical solution. 156 JANUARY 2018

After

Fat freezing quite literally freezes your fat cells until they disintegrate – killing them off. Up until now, it’s been one of our treatments of choice for areas like love handles, backrolls and thighs, because it’s so effective at reducing stubborn fat that won’t disappear any other way. The problem has always been that the technology worked for large areas, so it wasn’t suitable for chins. But now, there’s a new double chin-busting device called the CoolSculpt Mini, which has been specially adapted to treat smaller pockets of fat, such as the area under the chin. Riverbanks is one of the first clinics in the UK to offer CoolSculpt Mini and we’ve been thrilled with it. Each session takes just half-an-hour, and you see results within three to four weeks. There’s no downtime – you can usually go straight back to work – and it’s non-invasive, with no surgery or needles involved. Best of all, because it’s not a new treatment – just a new area it can be applied to – it’s tried, tested, safe and effective. The investment starts from £1,500 for a single treatment and our patients who have already undergone the treatment are already enjoying slimmer jawlines. “My face looks so different - I feel like I’ve lost 10 years,” “Angela” told me when I caught up with her recently. “I’ve had a radical haircut, because I don’t have to use my hair to cover up a double chin more. I feel great!” I asked her whether she’s happier to have her picture taken nowadays. “I put up a picture of myself on Facebook, and got loads of ‘likes’,” she laughed. “I could get used to that….” If that’s the kind of result you’re looking for, hit ‘reply’ to find out more. Your double chin can be gone before the end of the month. Warm regards,

Ravi

Live a Lumity Life What sets Lumity apart from other supplements? All other anti-ageing supplements on the market focus on delivering megadoses of antioxidants. We don’t think this is the answer. Free radicals are only one part of a bigger puzzle that results in ageing. The answer lies in studying all the systems the body itself already has in place to counteract ageing and supporting those systems with a more targeted nutritional approach that gently works with the body on a daily basis. How would you describe Lumity’s brand ethos? We celebrate and empower women. It can be an impossible goal to live up to the idyllic life portrayed by wellness brands and social media. Lumity instead champions women, lets them know that they’re doing a great job, they don’t need to overhaul their life to feel and look great, we meet them right where they are. Lumity is an easy commitment to integrate into your day. When your body starts getting the targeted nutritional support it needs, you will start to feel on top of your day, rather than the other way round. Can you tell us more about the products you offer and how they work? Lumity’s approach acknowledges the body’s superior intelligence and harnesses the ways the body itself counterbalances on-going damage through protection and repair. Targeted nourishment is key whether from the inside out, with our supplement, or from the outside in, with our facial oil, in order to effectively maintain glowing health and radiant beauty through the years. Lumity’s unique 2-step supplement offers the right nutritional support at the right time to help you look and feel your best all day, every day. It’s your secret ally - the teams of carefully-calibrated 160 JANUARY 2018

nutrients come together to target different areas of health: immune support, vitality and brain health, skin, nails and hair, bones, joints, muscles and teeth, metabolism and absorption, as well as, protection against oxidative damage. Lumity 100% natural Facial Oil is a perfectlybalanced blend of 32 nourishing plant oils, extracts and essential oils rich in antioxidant polyphenols, vitamins and minerals, lycopene, resveratrol and coenzyme Q10, as well as regenerative amino acids and omega 3-6-9 fatty acids. This one product provides the full range of optimal nourishment the skin craves for 24/7 glowing health.

“Lumity’s approach acknowledges the body’s superior intelligence and harnesses the ways the body itself counterbalances on-going damage through protection and repair”

What are the key changes people can make to improve their health? How can people stay fit and healthy in the winter months? Make balance your life mantra! A little stress is fine as long as it’s balanced with some restorative rest, relaxation and fun. Let’s not beat ourselves up when we indulge in a little wine, chocolate or pizza every now and again if our usual diet is generally healthy and rich in fruit and vegetables. Give yourself permission to go AWOL every so often, switch off all digital devices and taste the freedom, especially if your sense of responsibility usually has you on call 24/7. What do you think makes Lumity so popular? It can be rare for a brand in the health and beauty sector to live up to its promises, but when it does, it creates excitement. Our popularity has definitely been born out of the buzz that word-of-mouth creates; when you see a friend radiating health, beauty and vitality and you find out that her secret weapon is Lumity, that’s the best endorsement we could ever hope for and we love the thought that our best brand ambassadors are our customers. www.lumitylife.co.uk

Non-surgical Regenerative Medicine: Game-changing treatments for pain & orthopaedic injuries

S

ports injuries, chronic pain and orthopaedic conditions, such as osteoarthritis, are becoming increasingly common afflictions. Conditions of this type can significantly impact and impair quality of life. And with an ageing population, we are in desperate need of innovative, effective treatment options. This is where Regenerative Medicine comes in. Regenerative Medicine treatments promote local environment healing and can help improve and speed up the body’s ability to repair itself – without the need for invasive surgery. Patients use their own body tissue and growth factors for an entirely natural healing process that has a much lower risk of complications. This treatment is effective, available immediately at the point of care, and more cost-efficient than surgical options. LipoGems is a treatment that is right at the forefront of the latest Regenerative Medicine developments. The innovative therapy creates an injectable substance made from your own body’s fat tissues, which stimulates and speeds up the body’s natural healing process. It is a viable alternative to surgical treatment, and one which more people are turning to for fast and effective healing and pain relief.

“Mounting evidence suggests that LipoGems and other Regenerative Medicine treatments used in conjunction with comprehensive rehabilitation may help maximize the potential of nonsurgical treatment” For athletes, treatment strategies for injuries – including rest, physical therapy, and medications – are limited. However, mounting evidence suggests that LipoGems and other Regenerative Medicine treatments used in conjunction with comprehensive rehabilitation may help maximize the potential of non-surgical treatment. But these treatments aren’t just for elite athletes. Regenerative Medicine can be highly effective for patients from all walks of life – particularly those suffering from osteoarthritis. No matter whether you play professionally, work in an office, or stay at home with children, the ability to be active and free from pain is essential to maintaining a good quality of life. Regenerative Medicine has the potential to help everyone achieve this. 162 JANUARY 2018

Clinical considerations, such as optimal timing and choosing the correct mechanism, are important when deciding on treatments. But beyond the logistics, the promise of non-surgical Regenerative Medicine for sports medicine and orthopaedic injuries is undeniably exciting, and may prove to be game-changer in Musculoskeletal Medicine. Breaking down kidney stones

Lithotripsy at Bupa Cromwell Hospital

K

idney stones are hard stones that can form in one or both of your kidneys. They can cause severe pain in the lower back or side, known as renal colic, and are very common, with 5-10% of people affected by pain associated with kidney stones at some point in their life. Most people who get kidney stones for the first time are aged between 20-50. Your kidneys are responsible for ‘cleaning’ your blood by filtering out water and waste products to make urine. Kidney stones can form when there’s a build-up of salts or minerals in your urine. These minerals form into crystals, which are often too small to notice and pass harmlessly out of your body. However, over time, the crystals can build up inside your kidneys to form a kidney stone. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is often the first procedure your urologist will recommend if it’s suitable for the type of stone that you have. In this procedure, a machine will be used to send shock waves through the skin of your abdomen to the kidney stone. This breaks the stone up into fragments small enough to be passed in your urine. menopause In the ninth of our regular features from The London General Practice, Dr Angela Rai discusses the menopause

T

he menopause is a normal process that women experience, and can greatly affect the quality of a woman’s life. The menopause occurs when the ovaries stop producing eggs, leading to a drop in hormone levels in the body. There are 3 stages: • Perimenopause – this occurs a few years before the menopause when the ovaries gradually make less oestrogen. The fluctuation of hormone levels leads to the symptoms of menopause. • Menopause - is the point when it has been at least one year since the last menstrual period. • Post menopause – these are the years after the menopause. As oestrogen drops it can affect different systems in the body, such as skin, bones, heart and vagina. The average age of menopause in the UK is 51 years. Symptoms can start earlier at around the age of 45. Menopause prior to the age of 40 is defined as premature ovarian insufficiency. Symptoms of menopause vary greatly between women. Some women may only experience symptoms for a few months, whilst others may suffer for many years. Around one in four women have no symptoms. The first sign of menopause is usually a change in the normal pattern of your periods. They can become lighter or heavier with a change in frequency, until eventually the period stops altogether. Common symptoms are hot flushes and night sweats. Other symptoms include vaginal dryness, reduced libido, joint pains, difficulty sleeping, mood changes

172 JANUARY 2018

such as irritability and anxiety. There are also long-term health problems associated with a lack of oestrogen. These include osteoporosis which is a weakening of the bones making them fragile and increasing the risk of fractures. The risk of cardiovascular disease also increases after the menopause. Treatment options include hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT can improve can both symptoms and quality of life. HRT is also recommended for women who have gone through an early menopause and should take it until around the time of natural menopause. HRT can reduce the risk of osteoporosis, however it may also be associated with a small risk of developing breast cancer and women need to be assessed on an individual basis. HRT is available as tablets, skin patches and gels. Oestrogen creams can help symptoms of vaginal dryness and discomfort. There are also over the counter vaginal moisturisers that can be used that do not contain oestrogen. Wearing lighter clothing, keeping the bedroom cool at night, using a fan, having cool showers or having a cold drink may be simple measures that help the symptoms of hot flushes and night sweats. Following a healthy lifestyle, reducing alcohol consumption and giving up smoking are beneficial. Regular weight bearing exercises and safe sun exposure for Vitamin D production helps protect the bones against osteoporosis. There is limited evidence on ‘natural’ supplements and safety may be uncertain due to lack of data. Some woman experience benefits from alternative treatments, however you should seek medical advice if you have troublesome symptoms and before starting treatment. If you would like to speak to a Doctor please contact the practice.

Get your new year off to the right start with Westend Bed Company S leep is an aspect of life that is often overlooked. We regularly hear about high-flying business people who boast about the small amount of sleep they can function on and it is often seen as a badge of honour. However, sleep affects every aspect of our waking life. Life is hard, but without sleep it’s even harder. Did you know, a lack of sleep can have the same impact on your reflexes and reactions as being over the drink driving limit? Ever wondered why you have a short attention span or regularly snap at your nearest and dearest? A lack of sleep could be the culprit. This year make quality sleep a priority. At Westend Bed Company we are on a mission to help people achieve restorative sleep, every night, and to enjoy the endless benefits this brings. Time to update O

riginal sash windows can look stunning on a period building, bringing classic good looks and authenticity. Unfortunately, they usually bring freezing cold draughts too! We’ve found so many owners of period homes who have resigned themselves to living in cold rooms, having decided it’s the price they have to pay for the privilege of living in a beautiful older building. Strict conservation rules seem hard to steer around when it comes to updating your windows at all. Wouldn’t it be great to have the luxury of modern windows, which keep the heat in and fit your frame perfectly?! That’s where Storm’s Bespoke Secondary Glazing provides the ideal solution! Our system is virtually invisible, so it doesn’t detract from your handsome primary windows, or convene regulations. We powder coat and colour match aluminium extrusions to blend perfectly with your primary window, creating something which gives your home the comforts of modern glazing whilst balancing preservation issues. Benefits include a warmer home due to the greatly increased thermal efficiency, noise reduction, and easy access to your primary window – an important consideration when it comes to opening, or maintaining them.

“Our system is virtually invisible, so it doesn’t detract from your handsome primary windows” Storm’s engineering background has enabled us to push the boundaries of secondary glazing manufacture, and create secondary glazing which accommodates primary windows of almost any shape and size. If you need regular ventilation, our lower vertical sliding sash can be mounted within the staff beads of a sash window, allowing the lower pane to be opened, whilst the upper pane remains fixed. This also retains the use of working internal shutters which is often a requirement of conservation 180 JANUARY 2018

officers. We also make an upper vertical sliding sash, which works the other way, allowing the upper pane to be opened whilst the lower is fixed. If regular ventilation isn’t a consideration, though, or you only need to access the windows during warmer months, our slimline unit provides the perfect system. This can be used on various styles of windows where it can be installed into the reveals or inset into the primary window. We can also adapt our slimline unit to fit them to French doors and fanlights. In fact, this style of secondary glazing can be produced to accommodate the idiosyncrasies of many primary windows, and can be engineered to facilitate arch or bow tops and even curved-in-plan. Our surveyors visit your home to measure up and put together an accurate template of your window for our skilled craftsmen who hand-make every unit to your exact requirements. This precision allows us to produce glazing for almost all shape of window besides sash, including casement and York sliders, along with Gothic, Norman and Ogee arch shapes, with many styles available in a curved-in-plan. To make your beautiful house an even more attractive, warmer home, take a look at our website www.stormwindows.co.uk, give us a call to find out more on 01384 636365 or email sales@stormwindows.co.uk.

How to Avoid Desserting your Pudding!

A

nd so dear reader once again we hear the call for a dry January. I shall respond in time-honoured fashion by taking no more than two Dry Martini cocktails of an evening. This is really an excuse to bring in my drinks tray, laden with the necessary bottles – such a lovely holly-green colour – ‘v’ shaped glass, mixing jug full of ice, the strainer and a long-handled stirring spoon, and place it on the coffee table in front of the fire. Even before beginning the ritual of preparing the drink I feel better just watching the sparkle of reflected candle and fire light in the worn but still-bright surface of Old Sheffield Plate. Oval or rectangular, silver or plate any such tray will create the same effect. In summer I like to use an 18th century mahogany one, with a brass banded border. These also come in all shapes and sizes, ages and price range, and the deep brown timber can look so evocative of the past in the early evening light of the garden. Trays have been with us for a long while and can give us a fascinating insight into our social history as far back as pre-Tudor times when they were called Voiders, sometimes spelt with a ‘y’. This was because formal meals in great households were held in the main Hall followed by dancing, and the time it took to clear the dining accoutrements was called the ‘void’ – Old French for ‘empty’ – and the trays the staff used took their name from that. During this interval

182 JANUARY 2018

the revellers would take their sticky pudding, also known as ‘the void’, and stroll around the house or walk along the roof tops depending on the season. And here we come to the point. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I we adopted the New French vocabulary, wherein the term for ‘empty’ was translated as ‘dessert’. What with Entrée and Dessert it’s a wonder we don’t have a French word for Menu. Anyway my first drink today will definitely be an English Dry Martini, as an aperitif naturally. Kitchens TO LAST A LIFETIME Limehouse

T

he Neptune kitchen collection is made up of four signature designs: Chichester, Suffolk, Henley and Limehouse. All crafted from solid timber, all structured with traditional joinery, and all created with a careful balance between effortless function and beautiful form.

Henley

Chichester

THE REFINED HENLEY

THE CLASSIC CHICHESTER From £8,000 The epitome of traditional English style with cockbead moulding and a simple kind of perfection. Every component within the Chichester kitchen is made to work together or as standalone pieces and every width is dissimilar to give it a bespoke look and feel. It’s the kitchen that one of Neptune’s founders has in his own home and has done for 25 years and counting. Our favourite part? The ladder and sliding rail to reach the uppermost cabinets.

THE SHAKER-INSPIRED SUFFOLK From £9,000 Taking its cue from the disciplined Shaker movement, the Suffolk is pared-back to the essentials with very little embellishment; it all 184 JANUARY 2018

happens behind closed doors. Painted on the outside but left as exposed oak on the interior, it achieves a perfect balance. Our favourite part? Its very clever larder cabinet.

From £13,000 Crafted entirely from oak and showcasing some impressive curved cabinetry, this is Neptune’s most luxurious kitchen. From cornicing to skirting, its every inch is carefully sculpted from the highest quality timber and has instant country warmth. Our favourite part? The cavernous double drawer unit.

THE CONTEMPORARY LIMEHOUSE From £12,000 This is the sleek one. Strong, sharp lines lend it a streamlined look and with over 30 processes that go into building a single door, it’s Neptune’s most technically advanced kitchen to date. Our favourite part? All its hidden secrets (the pullout spice rack, the discreet wine rack, the stone prisms that act as drawer dividers).

Maximalism blooming

F

loral motifs are one of the most popular and timeless trends in wall decoration. This time, Pixers proposes floral designs in a new version - not as a perfect addition to the interior, but as a mainstay in the interiors following the principles of maximalism. Maximalism combines boho, retro and vintage styling. There is a kind of horror vacui in there – it is hard to find undeveloped space, and at the same time, everything seems to be in place. So can you imagine something more vivid than wallpaper in a maximal interior? One of the most interesting choices that Pixers has to offer in the style of maximalism are the saturated floral motifs. Colors kept in dark tones with shades of purple, black and green ideally suited for large rooms, which provide a mysterious romantic nature. Painted flowers and floral motifs against a dark background refer to the old wallpapers, but in today’s edition, combined with modern elements of the décor, it will be a refined proposition for the daring. In smaller interiors maximalism can have a softer look - dark flowers against a light background. The large magnification of the patterns allows for the creation of a “total effect” (I mean “total look”), in which the wall will play the main focal point. How can one combine expressive floral motifs with furniture and accessories? The interior can be

186 JANUARY 2018

a great “brightening” element – a vivid bed linen or bedspread, natural wood furniture and gold or copper finishes will gently contrast with floral motifs and give the interior lightness. There are also cozy items such as wicker baskets, knitwear or wool. However, the most beautiful part in maximalism is that it’s a style that does not exactly define the rules and allows you to let go of your imagination, experiment and fully reflects yourself in the interiors. www.pixers.uk

KEEP WARM WITH MARBLE HILL M arble Hill Fireplaces has been established since 1974 and are one of the market leaders in fireplaces in London and the South of England. We have 4 floors of showrooms and over 60 fireplaces on display at any one time, many of which are under fire. Marble Hill are constantly developing to keep pace with current trends and now offer not only traditional fireplaces in marble and stone, DFE gas fires, solid fuel stoves, and Eco and Bio Ethanol fires but also an innovative range of balanced flue gas fires from the Dutch manufacturers Bellfires. Bellfires are at the top of the range for both quality and design and their research department are constantly trying to improve and develop even greater efficiency and quality of product. As these fires do not require a traditional chimney they offer developers, architects and designers endless design opportunities to install a dramatic showpiece incorporating both innovative design and efficiency. Bell Fires have recently introduced the Smart Bell range especially for the UK market. The Smart Bell was designed to fit into existing fire chambers of period homes. These fires can more easily be adapted to suit existing chimneys and fire openings. They have an amazing flame pattern and the Premium burner system, which offers a life like fire image with burning wood logs and glowing coals, (ambient lighting) comes as standard. The Bell Fire ‘3’ range of balanced flue gas fires offers the newly developed floating frame concept with ceramic glass mounted behind the profile, the

frame allows it to float optically making the fire look more like a real fire than ever before. The ceramic back creates the perception of extra depth and emphasises the intensity of the flames. In addition the Bellfires 3 is available with a completely new hidden door system and with black screened glass edges to give a minimalistic appearance. Eloquent Eastern Interiors WORDS: Anna Howell

J

apanese is a language with an innate lyricism and rhythm. It is the mother tongue of the Haiku, a tiny poem that in just 17 syllables promises to break your heart or instill some powerful universal truth. And just as the Haiku is soulful and sweet, so are the Japanese philosophies that are captivating the imaginations of designers and homeowners in 2018. Split into several distinct parts, Japanese aesthetics can be best understood through the creations of contemporary designers. While verbal translations can often lead to slippages in meaning, design manages to distill what words cannot, offering us an artistic way in to these elusive Eastern ideas. First up is the principle of Fukinsei, captured effortlessly by B&B Italia’s Tobi Ishi Dining Table. Fukinsei highlights the flawed, asymmetric beauty of the natural world, which is full of harmonious relationships that are contrasted yet balanced. The asymmetric proportions of this stylish dining table establish an arresting focal point, a moment of synchrony in a hectic, modern world. Its calming appearance inspires us to get back to the dining table with family and connect in whatever way we can, putting an end to dinners spent in front of the TV. The takeaway here is that complimentary things are rarely identical, and through the meeting of different personalities and styles, true harmony can be found. Datsuzoku asks us to transcend convention, claiming that only when a well-worn pattern is broken can true creativity and resourcefulness

Noguchi Coffee Table by Vitra - £1,390

emerge. We are all products of our environment, yet we don’t realise the stifling influence a poorly planned home can have on us. One man who set to break with convention was the Japanese sculptor, Isamu Noguchi. His eponymous Noguchi Coffee Table was designed in 1947 and eschewed traditional templates of what a modern table should be. Instead of the predicable four legs he created a mesmerising sculpted base with a freeform glass top. It has since gone on to become an icon of 20th century design, gifting style and sinuosity to homes all over the world. He proved that revitalizing your home with gorgeous design isn’t just about aesthetics. Surrounding yourself with furniture that surprises and delights is an excellent way to stay inspired and kick-start new routines. While each of the teachings offers a new lesson, they often overlap and interconnect, revealing a peaceful existence that is in stark contrast to our breathless Western lifestyle. Shizen translates to a desire to be ‘of nature’ yet somehow distinct from it, a concept that is eloquently expressed in Umut Yamac’s Perch Collection for Moooi. In a wonderful display of contemporary lighting design, several birds balance on a metal perch, free to swing when touched or blown. Their moving joints allow for a joyful interaction between user and object, one that is fleeting yet sweet. Available as a table, floor, pendant or wall light, each carefully crafted bird emits a serene gush of illumination, powered by ecologically efficient LED bulbs. In a world intent on moving ever faster, these Japanese philosophies ask us to rediscover a gentle joyfulness in our physical environment, trusting in the power of good design to dissolve into our everyday behaviour. he Victorian era was a period of fascination and charm which mirrored the life and attitudes of the monarch for which it was named. An age when naturalists, such as Charles Darwin, were exploring the new worlds and, as a result, generating a wide spread desire to acquire things from nature. The Victorians began to display these eclectic items under glass domes in the Victorian parlours of the day and they became known as Parlour Domes. These domes would include exotic birds, elaborate and extravagant arrangements of wax fruit and flowers, statues, shell displays and much more. Her beautiful butterfly displays in glass domes range from a single butterfly to stunning large elaborate displays. She uses modern and vintage glass domes but admits her favourites are the hand sourced antique glass domes. It is important to note that all of the butterflies Charlotte uses in her work are ethically soured and none are endangered or protected species. They are from a UK based conservation project which encourages an active interest in preserving butterfly species and all have died naturally. Charlotte’s butterfly domes have appeared on TV, in films, on London Fashion Week cat walk displays - and are popular with celebrities. A touch of modern English eccentricity

B

oho&Co’s new fabric and wallpaper designs epitomise modern English eccentricity and once you have fallen in love, it’s forever! Although their designs transcend trends, they are in tune with the ever-growing celebration of British design and manufacturing and with it a rebuttal of the throwaway culture of cheaper imports. Their sister company An Angel at my Table, has, for twenty years been quietly painting English and French classic furniture in the colours of your heart’s desire and growing their ranges of uber-desirable and customisable upholstered furniture - all designed to inspire you to style a ‘forever home’ interior of which you’ll never grow tired. This cool combo of striking fabric designs and classic furniture marry beautifully together and can be found at their combined home - Angel&Boho.com. The trend for large scale florals and botanical prints looks set to continue in 2018 with Boho&Co adding their daringly dark and fun of the fair colouring to dramatic florals and botanicals using an archive of textile and wallpaper fragments and vintage imagery to produce designs with names like Floralism and Glory Be!, printed on sumptuous velvets and flowing linens, their understated extravagances bringing a sense of dramatic difference

to your interior decorating schemes. Particularly loved by interior designers and the public alike, at its launch at Decorex last autumn, was their Jardin des Oiseaux design - a take on modern orientalism available as fabrics and wallpapers - which was shown alongside an array of highly customisable and stylish dining banquettes - which have become ‘de rigueur’ as living and dining merge in beautiful open plan spaces or in snug and sophisticated dining areas. Angel&Boho is a family affair, run from well-used barns which house their photographic studio, offices, warehouse and paint workshop, surrounded by beautiful countryside from which inspiration is drawn for their fabric and wallpaper designs, whilst enjoying the daily commute on foot or by bike through the country lanes from nearby villages, having moved out from North London, it is always a delight! Plans for 2018 include new fabric designs, an updated and extended range of stylish upholstered furniture, showcasing their new designs at Decorex 2018 and plans to build a beautiful but rustic design studio which will double up as a location to shoot their latest creations. Ones to watch if you’re a connoisseur of original style! For more information visit angelandboho.com, email info@angelandboho.com or telephone 0845 2000 723

They are also working on a number of grand remodelling and basement projects in St John’s Wood, Hampstead and Westminster. Every project is unique; tailored to their clients’ lifestyle and aspirations, and sensitive to its location. Yet, each of them share a distinctive design philosophy that is evident throughout their portfolio of work. Coupled with a remarkable attention to detail, (clearly visible in the photographs of their finished homes) creating a seamless and often uninterrupted relationship between inside and outside appeals to those wishing to create contemporary environments with an emphasis on clean lines and maximising natural light. A TOUCH OF CLASS

architectural language and perfecting these can make the difference between a well-presented house and an exquisite one.

“Atkey and Company work closely with clients in London and beyond who are restoring and refurbishing period properties”

A

tkey and Company are makers of panelled doors and timber mouldings, with a catalogue spanning over 300 years of British architectural design. Atkey are best known for period accuracy in the design and production of Georgian, Regency, Victorian, Arts and Crafts and Edwardian architectural joinery. This winter sees the launch of Atkey’s new Contemporary Range of panelled doors and mouldings. In this new creative project, Atkey have brought together some of their favourite period designs as well as original designs, all suited to more contemporary interiors. By applying the same attention to good proportion and design, as well as employing the highest standards of production, the Contemporary range seeks to perpetuate the classical elegance of period joinery without the necessity or restrictions of slavish historical accuracy. Architectural mouldings exist to conceal the junction of different building elements, for example, between the floor and the wall or the wall and the door lining. Over time they evolved into a means of creating additional character and interest through the introduction of geometric shapes creating contrasts between light and shade. A simple palate of basic shapes originating in the classical architecture of Rome endures to this day in contemporary designs. The details speak an 200 JANUARY 2018

Atkey and Company work closely with clients in London and beyond who are restoring and refurbishing period properties, where reinstating the original character through the use of authentic designs is either desired or essential because of the property’s listed status. They also work with architects and interior designers on the development of classically inspired, new build properties, such as this example near Henley on Thames, where the doors, panelling and moulding details proposed by Atkey were selected to reflect the style of and in scale with, the external architecture, to create the effortless feeling of “rightness” and good proportion that a period British property might exhibit. In both cases, Atkey’s design teams are experts in period detailing and can advise on doors, architrave, skirting and other mouldings appropriate to the property and hierarchy of rooms within a property. The Contemporary Range of panelled doors comes with a wide selection of door mouldings to choose from, as well as different panel embellishment options and the use of feature timber finishes, all allowing the creation of truly bespoke doors.

Fabulous floors from Turgon

As we enter the New Year, and new interior design trends emerge, we are left undecided as to which bits of furniture to keep that we recently purchased. Typical.

W

ell, we can tell you one thing. Your wooden floors going nowhere. Your furniture may change, and you can dabble all you want with colour schemes for walls etc. but your wooden floors going nowhere. The interior industry experts tell us that the interior fashion is leaving the minimalist Scandinavian features behind, and we are moving forward maximalism and rich earthy colours. And nothing else shows the natural earth tones better then a wooden floor. Just like everything else in the interior design industry, the wooden floors market will change its shape and tones as well. As predicted, in contrast with previous years where we used to see more pale white and deep grey tones and mostly planks, the future shows rather a different trend. We are going back to classic wood patterns and designs. This tells we will be looking at more herringbones , chevron and custom made 202 JANUARY 2018

patterns. The bright side of this trend is, it will last forever, because classic doesn’t mean boring and these floors have shown their uniqueness since forever. They will never be out of trend, you just have to play around with the colours. Talking about colours, the future seems bright, rich and colourful. Even though the natural tone of the wood will remain the most famous, we are happy to see more rich tones such as orange brown that give that warm heritage that we’ve been missing. Walnut, cherry and natural oak are already trending. This year we will be seeing more reclaimed wooden floors. Recently we have discovered historic reclaimed woods that have been on the bogs for thousand of years, and they have shown to be a perfect reclaimed wood solution for the future because of their strength and density. Once again, keep your wooden floor, they will last forever in fashion. www.turgonflooring.co.uk

Wood Flooring That’s Made To Last A t the start of every year, there’s great excitement about the up-and-coming trends for the months ahead. Whilst it’s always fascinating to learn what the next big things is, it’s not always wise to base your entire new decorating plan on these passing fads. What’s in today, will inevitably be replaced by the next new trend. Renovating a property is time consuming and expensive, so when it comes to choosing the materials that make up the fabric of a building, such as flooring, it’s best to think long term and choose something that isn’t going to date. Peter Keane, Director of The Natural Wood Floor Company advises that, “flooring shouldn’t be seen as a temporary feature. It’s going to be down for a long time and is an investment. Don’t be swayed by cheap inferior flooring, as it simply won’t last.” In terms of design, one of Peter’s personal favourites is parquet. “Parquet is on the top of everybody’s wish list at the moment. Popular since the 1700’s, it’s been making a steady comeback for years now and is definitely here to stay. It’s a sign of true quality. Nobody can resist the charms of a well-made parquet wood floor.”

With the advances in manufacturing, there is now more choice than ever when it comes to colours, design and size. Engineered blocks are now available in longer and wider formats and unlike traditional solid wood blocks, they can be used with underfloor heating. When it comes to colours, there are no limits – anything goes. Soft greys and whites are becoming increasing popular and on the other end of the scale, dark hues are also loved for creating a cosy retreat and bringing warmth to a room. Another great advantage of wood is that if you tire of the colour, the blocks can be sanded and sealed in a completely new colour, so the wood can change with your tastes. Before you buy, it always pays to see wood flooring in person, so you can check the quality of the wood and the manufacturing. At The Natural Wood Floor Company’s showroom in Wandsworth, there are large displays of all of their wood flooring products, including an extended parquet display area. So if you are looking for a new floor to get 2018 off on the right footing, this is the place to go.

HOW TO MAXIMISE SPACE IN A CLOAKROOM

Give a compact cloakroom a feeling of light and space with these clever design tricks from Annabel Williams Designer at Ripples London…

I

t may be the smallest room in the home but the cloakroom, or downstairs loo as it’s more affectionately known, can be the most exciting and innovative. There are no design rules or practical restrictions – and with only two essential elements required (basin and WC), there are all sorts of ways you can make this space seem inviting, welcoming and more spacious than it really is…

TAKE IT TO THE WALL Starting with the sanitaryware, there are certain styles that are specifically designed with the cloakroom in mind. At Ripples, we also have a variety of compact models that are ergonomically designed in a smaller size and it goes without saying that wall-hung is the way to go. As well as creating an illusion of added floor space, it also makes it easier to clean around.

MIX IT To complement the basin look for smaller than standard basin mixers, which are in proportion to the basin itself. A single-lever tap keeps things simple but if you want to keep the basin surround completely clear, go for a wall-mounted mixer with a good spout reach over the basin.

BIG IS BEST When it comes to flooring, a pale, neutral coloured tile will open up the space. Large format ceramic or porcelain tiles have fewer grout lines, which makes the room feel larger. For walls, keep it simple with a fresh lick of paint in a lighter shade and add interest with a feature tile area behind the basin. If you don’t mind bringing a splash of colour into the room, this is your chance to be brave with a bolder shade. It’s 214 JANUARY 2018

not a room that’s always on show but friends and family will be utilising it, so be brave with a “wow” colour and bring some personality into the space.

MIRROR IMAGE Other clever design tricks include the use of mirrors and lighting. A large mirror hung over the basin will bounce light back into the room and instantly add a light, bright look. Go as large as you dare! Lighting is another useful feature. Consider LED tape strips mounted beneath basins or shelves to give them a floating effect and install halogen downlights or spots into the ceiling for a layered lighting finish.

KEEP IT SIMPLE Whilst the cloakroom is a smaller space, you still want some decent storage for spare loo roll and soap, so look at compact vanity units with the basin on top and ample cupboard or drawer space below. Simplicity is key so avoid fussy finishes and extraneous detail. Slab-style doors and handless models are sleek and streamlined.

HAVE FUN And last but not least, think outside the box – literally - and use every inch of space. It’s not about creating clutter but more about being creative. A series of floating shelves above the WC for instance can be used instead of a vanity unit in a really tight area. With a little careful planning, a bland cloakroom can soon be transformed into an inviting space packed with plenty of wow factor. LUXURY B ATHROOM GUIDE

224 JANUARY 2018

C

hoosing the right tiles for your bathroom needs some careful consideration. With so many varieties on the market, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Choose from ceramic, slate, glass and metal tiles, plain or patterned, large and small, smooth or textured. The options are seemingly endless. So, to help you through the decision process, we’ve put together some practical tips, making finding the perfect tiles for you bathroom, a breeze

CERAMIC OR NATURAL STONE TILES? Ceramic tiles are the most popular by a long way. They’re durable, their glazed surface makes them highly resistant to harbouring germs, they’re usually very easy to keep clean, and come in styles to suit every taste. If you opt for ceramics, the most important thing to be aware of is that they do tend to vary from lot to lot, so make sure all the boxes you buy are stamped with the same lot number. But if you’d rather try something different... Glazed terracotta tiles are hugely popular right now with the trend for Mediterranean style bathrooms. Good quality terracotta is not only gorgeously rustic, it’ll last virtually forever, but can be hard to find. So the cheapest option might not be the best. Natural stone tiles like granite, slate, marble and even terrazzo (composed of marble chips imbedded in concrete and polished smooth) are beautiful, distinctive, and luxurious. They’ll cost you though. And these materials tend to be porous, so you may need to apply a seal to stop the tiles absorbing water. Make sure you discuss this with the supplier before you buy. Glass, metal, and porcelain tiles look brilliant if installed properly – but that’s easier said than done. Unless you’re really a dab hand at DIY you might want to leave the fitting of these to the experts.

ADD TEXTURE AND INTEREST WITH BATHROOM TILES With the majority of bathroom suites being sleek and white, tiles are a great way to add texture and

interest into a room that can otherwise, look fairly clinical. If you’re talking floor tiles, texture is a must. It sounds like common sense, but many buyers are still seduced by lovely shiny tiles and then end up skidding all over the place every time the floor’s wet. Generally, the rougher the texture, the less slippery the tile when wet. When it comes to wall tiles, shiny tiles look chic and sleek and reflect light, making them a good option when in small or dark spaces. On the other hand, embossed tiles can be a smart way of adding interest to your walls and reducing starkness, especially if your tiles are in only one or two colours.

CONSIDER COLOURFUL OR PATTERNED BATHROOM TILES It goes without saying that white is by far the most popular colour choice for bathroom tiles. White tiles are fresh-looking, classic, and reflect light to give the illusion of a more spacious, lighter room. If you’re worried about the room looking too stark add dark or patterned towels and other accessories to introduce splashes of colour while retaining the clean minimalist look. Colourful or patterned tiles can be used to add detail here and there, or make a bold statement when used to cover the entire wall. They tend to look best contrasted with simpler bathroom fixtures.

SMALLER BATHROOMS LOOK BETTER WITH SMALLER TILES Generally, the more compact the bathroom the smaller the tiles should be, especially if there’s not much space between your sink, toilet, and tub. Smaller tiles will also require less cutting to fit around objects and make for a more flowing feel. If you’re lucky enough to have a big bathroom, large tiles give a sleek look with less exposed grouting in between. Borders or panels of smaller tiles can look fantastic in complimentary or contrasting colours.

I

Stepping under a cascading shower can be one of the most luxurious feelings in the world. But turning the shower on to be greeted with a pathetic little trickle can be one of the most frustrating and disappointing experiences! words: sam wylie-harris

ndeed, the power of a good shower should not be underestimated. So much more than a means of getting clean, the right one can encourage us to break into a chorus of Singin’ In The Rain, awaken the senses and leave us invigorated and ready to face the demands of the day. Nearly 90% of UK households, according to AMA Research (www. amaresearch.co.uk), have at least one shower in their home, and with demand for super-stylish systems continuing to grow, leading bathroom specialists now offer an array of solutions for both traditional and contemporary interiors. “The bathroom continues to be a key element of our homes, playing a much greater role beyond that of its traditional function as just another part of the daily routine,” says Robin Levien, international designer at Ideal Standard. “It has become both multi-purpose and multi-functional, an oasis of escapism and relaxation. A place for reinvigoration, transformation and even somewhere to pose, ponder and play.” Dreaming of a shower upgrade? The first stage in the planning process is to address a number of key issues, such as water pressure, the fabric of the building and ceiling height. “ The most important thing is to ensure you choose a shower system that’s compatible with your water supply, to make sure you have sufficient water pressure to give optimal showering experience,” notes Joe Stephens, product designer at Roper Rhodes. Once the practical points have been addressed, you can drench yourself in the fun bits...

Dark Depths Style and ambience can make a big difference in a bathroom; an uncluttered spa style, and chic, minimal designs are ever-popular. And while lighter colour schemes may be most traditionally associated with this part of the home, don’t rule out moody hues, which can work especially well. “There is a trend for using dark colours on the walls and floor, which with good lighting, can actually make a small

space seem bigger, as well as delivering a boutique hotel feel,” says Levien. Think different shades of greys, particularly darker tones, which are very on trend and great for creating a tranquil feel of luxury and relaxation.

Wet & wild Oversized shower heads can - literally - wash our woes away and make us feel like we’re in Club Tropicana. Large, 300mm shower heads, which can be ceiling-mounted for a dramatic effect, are perfect for this as they create a cascading rain shower effect. Diverter valves are very popular, as they give the ability to switch the flow of water between two or even three different outlets, such as the main overhead shower, a handset and a bath filler. Thermostatic shower valves are another popular choice, particularly for families, as they are safe and easy to use. Show-stopping ceiling-fed shower heads are a huge trend, because they look great, and they provide a really luxurious showering experience. ‘Wow’ shower head features, such as waterfall settings and LED mood lighting, which create a sense of total relaxation are also hot this year.

The Wow Factor When space is at a minimum, often it’s all about finding inventive and user-friendly ways of fitting in the essentials - but those lucky enough to have lots of bathroom space to play with can tap into trends on a larger scale. Bathrooms are moving from the functional into the decadent. Colour, texture, shape and size have moved from being ‘safe’ to almost stretching the boundaries of good taste. There has never been so much choice and product variation, and trends are very fast moving. Giving a traditional bathroom an up-to-date facelift, you could remove the bath and replace it with a large format slim tray and wet room. This totally transforms both the look, life and function of the bathroom. Think about coloured glass, as this can offer a ‘wow’ factor and also delivers some privacy, if the bathroom is used by more than one person at a time.
