ortnum & Mason opened their newest outpost at one of the world’s most iconic centres of trade, The Royal Exchange in November 2018. After years of close ties with the City through its Concierge service, Fortnum’s brings the exceptional hospitality and gifting for which it is world-famous straight to London’s financial centre. ZSL London Zoo opened its gates to visitors on Monday 15th June for the first time since its historic closure on 21st March, after months of lost revenue put the oldest scientific zoo in the world in a perilous position. The iconic landmark closed for the first time since World War Two then immediately offered up its car park to NHS key workers and sending packages of perishable food from its Terrace Restaurant to nearby hospitals. Seductively hidden and accessible from inside the hotel, The Secret Garden Bar is a secluded stylish oasis for guests to drink and dine al fresco and enjoy the English Summer Season in the centre of the city. Located on the edge of Royal Green Park, The Ritz London’s new elegant Secret Garden Bar has been designed with trimmed topiary, verdant green foliage, vibrant flower boxes featuring colourful geraniums, olive trees and fragrant lavender pots. Chelsea Flower Show is the most prestigious shop window for garden design in the world. Careers are launched by gaining that elusive gold medal for a show garden. For visitors they are the big draw; fascination with the huge cost, a sense of fantasy, and admiration for the prodigious skill required to create something so accomplished in such a short time. Maddox Gallery is proud to present Terry O’Neill “Every Picture Tells A Story”, an exclusive retrospective exhibition devoted to the renowned and celebrated British photographer, Terry O’Neill.

YOUR DREAM WEDDING AT BROCKET HALL
W
hether you’re newly engaged or have been thinking about booking a wedding venue for some time now, you’ve no doubt done some venue research. As you’ll realise, there are several unique styles of wedding venues out there, all offering couples a different experience when it comes to their actual wedding day. The difference between non-exclusive and exclusive use venues may seem trivial during the wedding planning stages but, on your big day, it could add that little bit of extra something which every couple deserves. Exclusive use guarantees you your privacy for the duration of your wedding day. You’ll generally receive sole exclusivity of a wedding venue, the grounds, the staff and anything else you require. It means you can be sure that you’re not going to bump into anyone on the day that isn’t a guest, or a member of staff, at your wedding. Some exclusive wedding venues will differ in terms of what they will provide within their exclusivity package. Hiring a blank canvas wedding venue could mean that you need to bring in every wedding supplier yourself; from the tables, chairs, linen, catering team and more. Booking to have sole use of a wedding venue means that you and your guests will have the use of the whole property for the duration of the wedding. Feel like royalty for the day with a complete exclusivity where the only guests are the ones you have specially invited. Find a venue that has accommodation on-site too, and your wedding venue will be transformed into a special retreat for the duration of your celebrations. If you’re unsure about how hiring an exclusive use wedding venue can enhance your wedding day, here are eight reasons which might just convince you to go for that exclusive use venue. 2 6 J U LY 2 0 2 0
Privacy A wedding is a personal occasion for your family and friends, so it’s natural to want complete privacy to enjoy the day with only ‘your people’. There won’t be any strangers roaming around the venue staring while you’re all in your finery and you won’t find any strangers in the background when you’re flicking through your wedding photo album. You will be able to choose exactly who you’ll be spending your day in the company of, giving your wedding the ultimate sense of intimacy.
Security Exclusive use venues tend to be a lot more secure and, with just your party on-site, it’s a lot safer and

you won’t have the fear of strangers gate-crashing your wedding reception.
Staff Exclusive wedding venues tend to lend themselves to better service because all of the staff at the venue are there to serve your party alone. That means you won’t have to queue up with strangers at the bar and you and your party will receive the undivided attention of the venue’s staff. It’s likely that the experienced staff will have seen every possible wedding-related mishap there is to see and they’ll know exactly how to rectify it; so you can feel safe in the knowledge that the happiest day of your life is being handled by the experts.
Travel From getting ready in the morning, to saying “I do” and have the last dance of the night, choosing exclusive venue hire means you don’t have to travel anywhere during your big day. Not needing to worry about travel makes everyone more relaxed. It also means there’s no need for taxis or designated drivers. You can keep the party going as long as you like, stay over and have breakfast together in the morning.
Attention When opting for an exclusive use venue, you can rest assured that you and your partner will be the centre of attention all day, without having to compete with other couples.
No Hidden Extras Exclusive use venues and all of their bonuses usually come as a package, so there are no hidden costs involved.
Location Some of the most beautiful venues in the country can be exclusively yours, but it’s not just the stunning barn or grand country house you’ll have, but the grounds and gardens too. Can you imagine celebrating in acres of rolling parkland, as Lord and Lady of the Estate? Amazing outdoor space could take your wedding to the next level.
More Quality Time Being in the same venue for the duration of your wedding gives you more time with your guests and

loved ones. It means the celebrations can last a lot longer too, as everyone can stay until it’s time to leave the following day. Since you’ll be at the venue for the duration of your celebrations, you can also build in extra time to capture more happy moments on camera too. As you can see, there’s much more to selecting a venue than simply price and location. The benefits of having exclusive use of a wedding venue are genuinely compelling, so make sure you explore it as an option. Choosing an exclusive use wedding venue could add the perfect touch to your big day, with a homely feel and endless privacy and security for an intimate atmosphere. It could just give you a wedding day that exceeds expectations and is unforgettable. Set in 543 acres of idyllic Hertfordshire countryside, Brocket Hall has played host to a variety of special and important events. The elegant and romantic setting is the perfect location for your special day. The Brocket Hall Estate, designed by Richard Woods, with the meandering Broadwater Lake and charming Paine Bridge offers the perfect backdrop for your wedding photographs. Few properties in England can claim to have been the home to two prime ministers, played host to George IV, Queen Victoria and the infamous Lady Caroline Lamb who introduced the Waltz to England in the Ballroom – which can seat from 50 – 150 guests for your wedding breakfast. The Ballroom is sumptuously decorated with fine paintings, including the stunning ceiling painted by Sir Francis Wheatley. Your special day includes the traditional butler service, with our Head Butler and his team catering to your every need. There are 30 luxurious double bedrooms within Brocket Hall and a further 16 bedrooms in the Melbourne Lodge, sleeping a maximum of 88 guests on the estate. On the Estate, we also have alternative venues to the Hall including our exclusive-use fine dining restaurant, Auberge du Lac (pictured above), and The Oak Room which is room-hire only. The launch of Mens Superbrands is the first step in this exciting journey, which will create a new home for the Harrods Man in 2020. Harrods’ commitment to menswear was evident with the opening of the tailoring workshop on Hans Crescent, built to provide a bespoke service to customers looking for suiting. In 1930, menswear took centre stage with the launch of The Man’s Shop. Located on the Ground Floor of the rebuilt Basil Street block, this one-of-a-kind department had its own entrance and became known as the ultimate shopping destination for men, offering the finest tailoring and cutting-edge fashion. www.harrods.com

ZSL London Zoo reopens London landmark set to welcome back visitors after unprecedented three-month closure
Z
SL London Zoo opened its gates to visitors on Monday 15th June for the first time since its historic closure on 21st March - after months of lost revenue put the oldest scientific zoo in the world in a perilous position. The iconic landmark closed for the first time since World War Two then immediately offered up its car park to NHS key workers and sending packages of perishable food from its Terrace Restaurant to nearby hospitals. Beyond the closed gates, life carried on for its dedicated team of zookeepers - as the charity behind the zoo launched a new fundraiser to support the care of its 18,000 animals. Behind the scenes, devoted zookeepers – some living on-site in the Zoo’s Lion Lodge guest accommodation observed social distancing while cleaning Penguin Beach, preparing food for the giraffes and caring for the meerkats, while the nearly 200-year-old charity appealed to the public for donations to help cover the costs. Staff have been busy preparing the zoo for visitors while waiting for the green light to open the gates; numerous measures are now in place to ensure that the zoo is a safe, inspiring place for visitors to enjoy the wonders of wildlife, while supporting ZSL’s vital science and conservation work. Additional handwashing facilities and sanitiser stations have been placed across the Zoo, while 2m distance markers have been laid out in exhibits and one-way routes introduced to control the flow of visitors. The Zoo’s Terrace Restaurant remains closed for now - with feeding time for visitors replaced by takeaway provisions at a number of

snack bars across site. ZSL London Zoo’s Chief Operating Officer Kathryn England said: “Along with the rest of the country, we watched as this unprecedented situation unfolded around us and began making detailed plans in anticipation of having to do the previously unthinkable - close ZSL London Zoo to the public. “A core team of zookeepers, vets, security and grounds staff stayed on-site and to make each day as normal as possible for our much-loved residents, many of which are endangered species and part of important global breeding programmes.” “We’re delighted that we can once again welcome visitors to ZSL London Zoo. We’ve gone to great lengths to make the Zoo a welcoming and safe space for people to visit, including installing additional hand sanitation points and creating colourful one-way wildlife walks across our 36-acre grounds - ensuring visitors can experience the natural world while observing social distancing. After weeks of behind-the-scenes work - painting route markers and putting up more than 2,000 new directions and signs - we’re looking forward to connecting people with nature again, a mission that has been the beating heart of ZSL for nearly 200 years.” While the news is certainly cause for celebration, it does not signal the end of ZSL’s urgent fundraising efforts: the increased safety measures mean London Zoo will be offering pre-allocated, timed entry slots, limited to just 2,000 visitors a day - well below the numbers needed to recoup the charity’s costs. Director General Dominic Jermey added: “Reopening is an important step towards securing ZSL’s future but is by no means an instant fix. We rely heavily on zoo ticket sales to fund our vital conservation work, and after months of enforced closure we still urgently need support. “We battened down the hatches to weather the storm - furloughing staff and cutting costs wherever possible - but our animals, many of which are threatened in the wild, need the same outstanding level of animal care whether we are open or closed. “We are enormously grateful to all those who have generously donated to our cause during this unprecedented time, but we still need support to get our zoos back on their feet, our conservationists

“ Its two zoos, London and Whipsnade, are home to over 20,000 animals, many of which are globally threatened and some already extinct in the wild. ZSL has already supported the re-introduction of some of the most threatened species back into the wild and helped to increase wildlife populations globally. With 75% of new infectious diseases, including COVID-19, originating from animals, ZSL’s work researching and tackling these issues is needed now more than ever. “Without your help, we could see the closure of the world’s oldest scientific zoo, home to thousands of animals and the place where generations of people have forged a love of wildlife through their joyful encounters with animals. Now more than ever we must support the work of this global conservation charity.”

Monaco Yacht Show 2020 A Superyacht Industry Support Show. September 23 – 26, 2020, Port Hercule, Monaco
T
he Principality of Monaco and Informa have announced a secure, not-for-profit event in 2020 They have confirmed they are working together to deliver an intimate, not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in Port Hercule in September 2020, with full details to be announced in the coming weeks. The proposed event will employ the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness and be dedicated to supporting the speedy recovery of the industry post COVID-19, providing an invaluable platform for designers, brokers, shipyards and other key players within the yachting industry to connect with their customers and share ideas in a safe environment.
Return & Recovery post the COVID-19 Pandemic Like most industries, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a marked impact on the international yachting community, with many businesses temporarily closed and staff furloughed, and the usual annual cycle of industry activity severely disrupted. As countries and locations around the world gradually relax lockdown restrictions and ease control measures, it is imperative that the superyacht community is supported in every way possible to help the industry return and recover safely and quickly.
The 30th Monaco Yacht Show in September 2020 With this in mind, The Monaco Yacht Show has been working closely with the Principality of Monaco to determine how best to support the industry in 2020. This year’s Monaco Yacht Show is scheduled from 23 to 26 September. With control measures steadily being relaxed in Monaco, around Europe and internationally, on current course and speed, this should allow for a carefully staged event to still take place this year. Therefore, it is our intention to retain these dates for the 2020 Monaco Yacht Show and work with

suppliers and local authorities over the coming weeks to confirm full details of the event. In the spirit of the history and position of the event within the superyacht industry, the 30th Monaco Yacht Show will be run on a not-for-profit basis, recognizing the challenges facing everyone post the COVID-19 pandemic and, therefore, providing direct support to all attendees and exhibitors from across the market. Whilst the intimate nature of the 2020 event will prioritize the safety of participants, both Informa and the Monaco Principality are committed to ensuring the quality of the event and show experience is maintained for everyone. Charlie McCurdy, Chief Executive, Informa Markets (organiser of the Monaco Yacht Show) said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on all industries, not least the international yachting community. As we move to the other side of the pandemic, all parts of the industry need to work collaboratively to ensure a speedy return and recovery. We are playing our part by hosting a notfor-profit Monaco Yacht Show in 2020, providing an opportunity for the community to come together, share ideas, meet with customers and start to rebuild positive momentum.” www.monacoyachtshow.com

hy open a great bottle and let it spoil? Coravin, the company behind the world-renowned wine preservation system, has recently launched three new models to its award-winning range: Model Three, Model Five and Model Six. Each model includes the new and intuitive SmartClamps™ technology, designed to make it easier than ever to enjoy a glass of wine without removing the cork and preserve the bottle. Coravin has revolutionised the way that the world drinks wine with its range of innovative wine preservation systems. Each system includes patented technology to protect your wine from oxidation, allowing you to pour any wine, in any amount, without pulling the cork. The devices work by inserting a needle through the cork and pressurising the bottle with Argon gas. The cork then naturally reseals the bottle allowing the wine to enjoyed for months, or even years, to come. Designed with consumers and first-time users in mind, the Model Three, Model Five and Model Six are fitted with exclusive SmartClamps™. Until now, the SmartClamps™ technology was only being used on the most premium product, the Model Eleven. The Right Fit for Them F
rederick the Great of Prussia first described the millennia -long history of close relationship, loyalty and companionship between people and their dogs as a ‘best friend’ relationship. Though dogs share 99% of their DNA with wolves it is interesting to reflect on their very different evolutionary paths. While the wolf, our fiercest pointy-eared enemy, roams free, sourcing its own food; dogs adopted us, evolved floppy ears and took on the role of playmate, companion and confidant. While floppy ears are the secret to free food, there’s something more going on here. Dogs appear, quite effortlessly to ‘get’ loyalty and love. Not only do canines understand our emotions and body language, but when dogs and humans interact, both our bodies release oxytocin; a hormone commonly associated with feelings of love and protectiveness. We love our dogs. They love us. In January our beloved Labrador gave us all a bit of a surprise. It wasn’t just weight gain after all! She had hitherto refused all suitors – signalled by sitting down with tail wrapped around legs. But the gun

dog, who we thought had been similarly spurned, had apparently been to her taste. What joy to discover 3 gorgeous boys snuggled next to her one winter morning! It was less than a minute before we were absolutely torn at the thought of letting them go to new homes. While we couldn’t keep ‘the boyz’ we could not face losing them. After weeks of tussle we resolved to gift them to families no more than 100 metres from home so that we could always be on hand for dog-sitting opportunities. And naturally they are proud to wear collection collars and leads. Jade by Kera for Jumbo, Red by Kera for Ace, and the double comfort of Kera Lux collar and lead for Lucky. Affordable luxury collars for modern dogs. Here’s a test to see if your dog is truly happy with their collar: Take off their collar and present it to them. Does your dog display ‘proud’ behaviour, like, “WOW. Where did that come from?” Do they pick it up and try to stash it with their toys? Does your dog lick it or stretch their neck to have it put back on? Are they bedazzled by it? For many dogs their collar represents their security and they feel lost when they are removed. It’s worth spending time finding the right collar – like us they are individuals and have different needs. Your dog may enjoy a more lightweight collar in summer to stay cool. Or a bit of glitz for winter mornings. At all costs avoid a collar that is too tight, or has rough uncomfortable edges. National Garden Scheme launches
Chelsea Flower Show Special Collection for Virtual Garden Visits campaign
C
helsea Flower Show is the most prestigious shop window for garden design in the world. Careers are launched by gaining that elusive gold medal for a show garden. For visitors they are the big draw; fascination with the huge cost, a sense of fantasy, and admiration for the prodigious skill required to create something so accomplished in such a short time. After Chelsea is over, often the only way people can enjoy the work of the designers is by visiting gardens they have created which open for the National Garden Scheme. With no show this year, we are celebrating these talents with virtual visits to memorable gardens designed by four of the most distinguished current designers – two of which are their own – and one garden designed for this year’s show. Together the five have amassed an impressive 29 Chelsea gold medals between them. Tom Stuart-Smith, who lives in Hertfordshire, is one of the most admired garden designers in the world who in the early-2000s created a series of the iconic Chelsea show gardens, winning 8 gold medals and three best in show awards in the process. Tom’s career revolves around the garden he has created at his Hertfordshire home The Barn. In a gorgeous film vignette he takes us on a tour and talks about his work. Similarly, another favourite designer, Bunny Guinness, winner of six Chelsea gold medals and popular panellist on Radio Four’s Gardener’s

Question Time, takes us on a tour of her Cambridgeshire garden where sustainability and self-sufficiency are the watchwords. Julie Toll and Marcus Barnett both have similarly enjoyed Chelsea success to help boost their now international reputations as designers. Their contrasting ability to blend modern and contemporary with a more traditional country garden style are brilliantly shown off at the Manor House, Ayot St Lawrence designed by Julie and 15 The Avenue, Cheam, designed by Marcus. And in celebration of the National Garden Scheme’s relationship with nurses we feature what would have been one of the stars of this year’s show, the Florence Nightingale Garden: a Celebration of Modern Nursing; designed by Robert Myers, which we will now have to wait until the 2021 Chelsea Flower Show to enjoy. The film is introduced by the President of the Florence Nightingale Foundation, Baroness Watkins, who explains the link between Florence Nightingale and the National Garden Scheme, before designer Robert Myers explains the inspiration for his garden and reveals some of the key features. The films are part of the National Garden Scheme’s Help Support Our Nurses campaign which it has been running while all its gardens are closed. The charity is sharing weekly portfolios (released each Thursday) of films made in their gardens by owners who open and inviting people to make a donation when they watch in a bid to make up the huge funding gap for nursing and health charities that the closure of the gardens has created.

addox Gallery is proud to present Terry O’Neill “Every Picture Tells A Story”, an exclusive retrospective exhibition devoted to the renowned and celebrated British photographer, Terry O’Neill. Spanning over 60 years, no other photographer has embraced the span of fame, capturing the icons of our age. From the faces of film to fashion, movie stars to musicians and presidents to pop stars, Terry has become one of the world’s most collected photographers. His work now hangs in national art galleries and private collections around the world. Terry began his career at the birth of the 1960s. While other photographers concentrated on earthquakes, wars and politics, he realised that youth culture was a breaking news story on a global scale and began chronicling the emerging faces of film, fashion and music who would go on to define the Swinging Sixties. By 1965 he was already being commissioned by the most prominent magazines and newspapers in the world. “When Elizabeth Taylor asks you for a favour, you don’t say no”, this initiated the celebrated image of Taylor and Bowie when Terry was asked to initiate a meeting between the two for the 1976 film ‘The Blue Bird’. The moment captures the extraordinary and intimate introduction between two icons, directed and composed by Taylor. The shot still highlights their instant chemistry and solidified a lifelong friendship between them. In the first retrospective show since his death, the exhibition includes a portfolio of witty and

TATE MODERN presents Andy Warhol Until 6 September 2020. A new look at the extraordinary life and work of the pop art superstar
A
ndy Warhol (1928–87) was one of the most recognisable artists of the late 20th century, yet his life and work continue to fascinate and be interpreted anew. A shy, gay man from a religious, migrant, low income household, he forged his own distinct path to emerge as the epitome of the pop art movement. This major new exhibition at Tate Modern – the first at the gallery for almost 20 years – offers visitors a rare personal insight into how Warhol and his work marked a period of cultural transformation. Drawing upon recent scholarship, it will provide a new lens through which to view this American icon. Featuring over 100 works from across his remarkable career, the show will shed light on how Warhol’s experiences helped shape his unique take on 20th century culture, positioning him within the shifting creative and political landscape in which he worked. While he is best known for his iconic paintings of Coca-Cola bottles and Marilyn Monroe that held up a mirror to American culture, the exhibition will emphasise recurring themes around desire, identity and belief that emerge from Warhol’s biography. Key works from the pop period, such as Marilyn Diptych 1962, Elvis I and II 1963/1964 and Race Riot 1964, will be examined in relation to contemporary issues around American culture and politics, while Warhol’s limitless ambition to push the boundaries of media will be represented via his famous Screen Tests 1964–6 and a recreation of the psychedelic multimedia environment of Exploding Plastic Inevitable 1966. Visitors will also be able to experience Warhol’s floating Silver Clouds 1966 installation, initially meant to signal his ‘retirement’ from painting in favour of moviemaking. He famously stated that ‘good business is the best art’: the exhibition will look at how Warhol’s forays into publishing and TV, as well as his interest in club culture. The exhibition will emphasise his skill as a painter

Donna Engstrom is a self-taught, abstract expressionist. Driven by the power of words, her paintings are inspired by quotes, book passages and poetry. Color and texture are integral elements of her work, creating paintings full of energy and joy. The warm colors in ‘It’s Rhetorical’ glow with excitement and happiness. The cooler palette of the other pieces is a further exploration of mark making and color balance. ‘My goal, as an artist, is to create work that makes people feel positivity and wonder’. Engstrom’s mantra is ‘Good art does not have to match your sofa.’ Her paintings are the perfect accent to any room. Engstrom’s work was recently seen in the January, February, and March issues of House & Garden UK magazine and she has work in both private and corporate collections.

nna van den Hövel wants to give the viewer more. She connects the creative process with its own individual perception of the world. Expressive and unconventional techniques are used. After a long study of materials, Anna has found the perfect mix for her works to create a collage through layering and blending. She combines acrylics, pigments, lacquer and materials such as sand, earth or mortar to make the images in her head a reality. “My definition of art is to create something with my hands that expresses who I am,” says the artist about her work. Her works are more than just painting. The often large-format canvases with generously applied layers wrap the viewer through powerful movements and offer a surprisingly new and charming view of our planet. “Birdview”, a series from her creative cycle. The bird’s-eye view makes her motifs smaller, smaller and powerless. Only the big picture of colors, shapes and materials offers the viewer a scope to perceive buildings, objects and landscapes. The success proves Anna right. Currently, exhibitions are planned in Los Angeles and New York. Her agent in the US is none other than Guy Hector. ark’s work over the past twenty years has been devoted to those landscapes that are associated with the untamed and wild landscapes that can be found in the Moors, Fens, Fells and Estuaries of Britain. He has carried those impressions of the sublime in the landscape that were left on him as a child growing up in the Fens of East Anglia, impressions that are still relevant to his work today. It is this sense of the liminal landscape that persists. A line between two worlds, given its focal point in the horizon. It is also something he keenly feels and anticipates when the first marks of charcoal, pencil or paint are made on the paper, that he is breaking into another plane or perceptual depth, this “liminal” space which is so important to his work. Marks influences are many and varied and include the calligraphic paintings of Cy Twombly, the tonal ink paintings of Hosagawa Tohaku and the landscapes of Constable, Claude, Cottman and Turner. He has exhibited work around the country, most notably on a number of occasions at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol as well as being shortlisted for SKY’s Landscape Artist of the Year 2016, he was also a finalist for TOAST’s “works from the heart” 2017. Mark has also been successful as a published poet being shortlisted for the Brit Writers’ Award 2012 and winning Fleeting Magazines International Best Short Writing 2010. “Mark Stopforth’s work captured me from the first. The delicate relationship between expression, fluidity and order is one that occupies me in the searches of my own work, and in encounters with art that moves me. reach should cease, leaving a clear space in the ether where we can take up and build with the strands that he has placed so carefully. Only in this way can landscapes draw themselves in mind, and draw us to look outwards again, anew. aroline is originally from Amsterdam, Holland but lives in London since 2016. She has had several exhibitions in Holland and in London art galleries in the past years. The majority of Caroline’s work consists of collections and women, although she made individual art work, she emphasizes on her collections. Love for the ocean, Inspired by Picasso, Women in abstract and Let’s face it’ are her main collections. A distinctive signature from her which returns in all her paintings are straight lines and cubicle shapes mixed with a contemporary art style. The fashion runways and the beauty of women are what inspired her to create her latest collection ‘Strength’. Her background in fashion clearly comes back in this collection. There is a bit of mystery in the face expression which you have to believe but can also be intriguing. By using elements of abstractionism and realism at the same time there is contradiction in her work, you have to take an extra look and have your own imagination. As this collection is about the power and beauty exposed by so many different women, ’Strength’ is the only true name for her latest collection. Living in History “W
hen I draw a ‘Then & Now’ twin set of house portraits, I can re-create historic scenes dating back to different periods of the house, adding a deeper appreciation and understanding of the property and its heritage” says Eli Ofir a full-time, professional House Portrait artist, and the author of the worldwide renowned publication: ‘Living in History’. Mr Eli Ofir specialising in detailed English period & current architecture. His unique art style and technique of drawing a portrait with a “Gentle Twist to Perspective” made him one of the most sort-after and busiest commission artist in his field. The portraits are all hand-drawn and created with a unique touch & feel that Eli portrays from the specific house type, period, and character. “This results in an art piece with a life of its own, crafted carefully to reflect the unique story and beauty of the house” (The Observer). During the years Mr Ofir has been commissioned by many historic building owners, ranging from famous places such as Hever Castle, or The Compleat Angler Hotel, and through to privately owned country houses such as Great Ote Hall, Mersham Le Hatch, Bathampton House, and many more period, mock and modern properties. The ‘Then & Now’ concept re-creates historic scenes dating back to different periods of the house, adding deeper appreciation of the building and its heritage. Eli creates this by adding items and figures from the era such as a horse & carriage, vintage vehicles, historic agriculture equipment, or people dresses in period clothes. If required, he can alter or change parts of the building to reflect what it used to look like, based on historic deeds or other information revealed by the owner. His ‘Artistic License’ allows him to draw scenes that are normally not seen and are hidden behind a hedge, wall, or tree. He can ‘move’ the neighbours

out or ‘move’ features such as a pond, a well, views, or an outbuilding into the portrait. He can also include pets and vintage cars to be part of the portrait alongside the house. Eli does not draw every house and is very particular and keen to firstly see initial photos and feel if the house will benefit and be suitable for his technique and artistic style. In some cases, if the property is not too far, Eli prefers to personally visit the house, see it for himself, feel its character and take his own photos from angles that one might not think of. He draws only by commission and produces one or two commissions per month, to allow him to dwell and concentrate on the unique features of the house while he is creating the art-piece. The result is an original, or a set of original framed portraits ready to hang on the wall, along with high-resolution scanned copies of the portraits, that can be used as stationary print such as greetingcards, letterheads, placemats & coasters etc… Eli’s price range depends on the number of portraits & angles one orders, the size of the portrait & frame, and the range of stationary printed.

Planning a ‘Great Escape’ to the country?
H
enley has so much going for it as a market town. We may be famous internationally for the Royal Regatta and boy do we miss it this year - but as a place to live, the locals are thrilled to call it home. Lockdown has revealed the strong town community, a veritable army of local helpers and heroes, and a sense of gratitude for this beautiful area. The Henley area has always been attractive to a London market. Located in the Thames Valley it’s a natural progression for those seeking more space and a great quality of life. As an independent Henley estate agent, we’ve seen at least 70% of new enquiries coming from London postcodes since Lockdown. And who can blame them? Henley has it all, all year round: Green space - with open fields and ancient woodland less than a mile from the centre of town, part of the Chilterns ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, and with riverside parkland, towpaths and hundreds of miles of footpaths, Henley is the gateway to the countryside.
Transport links - our town is only 35 minutes from Heathrow Airport, 8 miles from the M4 or M40, connected via railway to the Great Western mainline into Paddington and connected to Crossrail when it opens in the next year. Schools - with a plethora of high quality primary, prep, secondary and private schools within
7 2 J U LY 2 0 2 0
a 20 mile radius, families are spoilt for choice. Sport, entertainment and leisure - Beyond the spectacle of the Henley Royal Regatta, and Henley’s reputation as the global home of rowing, Henley’s entertainment and leisure scene are vibrant and varied. We have one of the oldest theatres in the UK - The Kenton Theatre. We have a 3-screen cinema (with wine bar). We have a modern museum by the river. We have festivals that celebrate literature, food, children and the performing arts, Christmas and a Living Advent Calendar, the pop music of the 1980s, and of course the Henley Festival itself - a 5-day black-tie spectacular of music and song and dance and comedy and art. The food scene is growing, with the arrival of several high-end independent restaurants and cafes, and the Market Square has facilities for ‘al fresco’ dining. The riverside is a generous expanse of mooring, paths, meadows, a cafe and playground. There are cycling clubs, running clubs, hockey teams, a successful cricket club, a vibrant and social rugby club and football teams. Clubs - there are private members clubs on both sides of the river, with world-class facilities and a variety of member activities that serve many interests. High-speed broadband - with both the traditional providers, and now our own ‘Zzoom’ fibre-optic network, working from home or bingewatching has never been quicker. In short, there’s a lot to living in Henley, and it justifies the increased interest in our town. So, in case you were on the fence about moving away from London, we thought you might like to give Henley another look. Many appealing properties have recently come to market, and even some which are being kept off-market for the right buyer. So, if you were thinking about a ‘Great Escape’ why don’t you call us to discuss it. phil@philipboothesq.com or 01491 876544

LOUT AW & ABOUT
Life After Covid A
s we hopefully turn the corner with Covid-19 and life starts returning back to normal, we ask a panel of solicitors from long-established Battersea firm Hanne & Co how they see Coronavirus impacting life and business. Liz Francis, who is the Managing Partner of the firm comments: “In its 120 years as a local Southwest London law firm, Hanne & Co has seen it all…including two world wars! While not of the same order, the last few years with first Brexit and now Covid-19 have certainly been a rollercoaster ride. The last few months, especially, have put a huge strain on our business, not least because of the uncertainty, but I feel we are now seeing some green shoots of recovery. For example, our conveyancing work, often a good indicator of the state of things, has picked up to a phenomenal rate.” Sue Harlow heads the Family & Divorce Law team and reflects, “It is an unfortunate side effect of the lockdown that there has been an increase in the rate of breakdown of relationships. It is the role of my team to deal with the fallout from this and we see it as a very important part of our work that we help people find closure as quickly and painlessly as possible so they can move on with their lives.”

There is no doubt that in the medium-term, Covid-19 will continue to have an impact on the business community and James Collier, a Senior Associate in Hanne & Co’s Employment Law Department, provides a suggestion on just one of the things enterprises need to consider in the new post-Coronavirus landscape: “In the few years before Brexit, most firms were treading water and held off on key decisions such as investment and the related issue of engaging new staff. Now Coronavirus has come along bringing about yet more change and levels of complexity to the way they do things. I think that it is key, therefore, that all companies review their HR policies and handbooks to ensure they are fit for purpose and that these policies, along with internal procedures, do not expose them to expensive employment claims.” Liz rounds the discussion off with a final sentiment: “The last few years have been full of great uncertainty and it is very likely that this will continue for the foreseeable future. For 120 years, through good and bad, Hanne & Co has stood by the local community offering all the support it can. I would like to think we will continue doing this for another 120 years…at least!”

Why Your Law Firm Can Become a Frequent Companion on Your Journey Through Life… Liz Francis of Hanne & Co Solicitors explains
R
elationships, work and home are perhaps the three main cornerstones of our journey through adult life. Unsurprisingly all three of these are likely to involve a trip to your solicitor at one time or another. The first major milestone is marriage/civil partnership. This is a happy event, but with the increase in the divorce/separation rate over the years, more and more couples are signing prenuptial agreements and these need to be drawn up by an experienced family lawyer. The next major milestone is the purchase of the first family home, requiring a conveyancing solicitor to deal with this often tricky process. Then, as you start a family, attention is naturally drawn to the need to have a will in place that reflects your final wishes and safeguards the financial interests of your family. Even straightforward wills need to be prepared by an expert from the Wills, Probate and Trusts team, who, incidentally, can help you put trusts in place for your children as part of your tax planning strategy. If the family expands further you usually find that the first family home has become too small for your needs and that the will has to be amended to make provision for the new addition(s)…so it’s back to your conveyancing and wills solicitors for further assistance. You may also have to be prepared for the odd dispute with your neighbour, tenant or landlord (if you’re still renting). If you can’t come to an agreement with them, a conversation with a litigation expert may be required. Moving on to work, as an employer you may
become involved in an employment dispute with an employee. A solicitor with great experience in Employment Law and Tribunals, settlement agreements and redundancy consultations, amongst other things, will be essential to navigate you through these difficult times. The same holds true if you are not the business owner, but, as an employee, experience unfair dismissal, harassment or discrimination in the workplace. If disaster strikes at home and the relationship with your partner breaks down, you will need the involvement of your firm’s Family Law Department to handle your separation/divorce – as well as your conveyancing solicitor since the matrimonial home may need to be sold or transferred to allow for both parties to live separately. Your wills also need to be changed again to reflect the new arrangements being put in place. It is important to find a law firm with the range of expertise to cover all situations and who you can develop a trusting relationship with. Hopefully, you won’t need to put their phone number in your mobile’s speed dial list, but as you can see, you may find yourself having to dig it out from time to time. Hanne & Co has been providing legal services to London’s residents for over 120 years with its reputation being built on its strong technical expertise combined with a friendly and reassuring touch. And as a full-service firm there is a wide range of legal areas we cover – including Family & Divorce Law, Property Conveyancing, Wills, Probate & Trusts, Property Litigation and Employment Law amongst others.

e don’t think of Wills as being sad, quite the opposite. In fact, we think of them as being filled with love. The reasons people write a Will are numerous, from ensuring your family are provided for to protecting assets from care home fees, to just leaving gifts to make people smile once you’ve gone. Whatever your reasons, the benefits are clear. A Will gives you peace of mind that your wishes are formalised as well as appointing people you trust to look after your affairs and loved ones. Having run a genealogy company, our founders saw first-hand the problems that not leaving a Will can cause. From arguments between families, partners feeling like they’ve been forgotten, and pets being left to fend for themselves, we’ve seen a lot of sad stories. When we start speaking with clients about writing their Wills, we don’t focus initially on the boring legal bits. We want to know their why. Watching people’s faces light up as they talk about their

WillPlan™ Changing the approach to Future Planning We help a lot of families with probate. It’s a complicated and time-consuming process. One of the most common causes of problems is an outof-date Will. People write their Will, then put it in a drawer for 20 years. When it’s found, people have married, moved or even passed away. We developed WillPlan™ for this very reason. For an annual fee of just £39, we offer an annual update and keep in touch with our clients with regards to any changes in relevant tax laws. This means our clients can update their Wills when: • They marry or divorce • They move house • A new addition (child or grandchild) arrives • They inherit assets or money • Their children become adults • Beneficiaries move or pass away Encouraging our clients to take stock regularly, means they are confident their Will reflects their current situation. All of our WillPlan™ clients benefit from free storage of important documents in our offsite facility, as well as discounts on our other services. To decorate your outside space, start with festoon lights, hang them as a single string or double up for added illumination, position them over outdoor seating to be enjoyed on warmer days. Finally add finishing touches such as wall lights near the door, which’ll be very practical once the sun has set and for an extra decorative touch place a pair of garden lanterns near the door. www.lights4fun.co.uk

THE NEXT BIG GARDENING CRAZE?
“I guess part of that is the perception of weeds. Some weeds in the right context can look decorative. We know there’s a lot of benefits to nature from dandelions, for example, which are quite decorative. But then you might look at another weed, like a thistle, which could look out of place. The point where something becomes needing to be maintained is where you’ve let wabi-sabi go too far.”
Wabi-sabi is all about a more relaxed style, says expert Michael Perry, aka Mr Plant Geek. Hannah Stephenson discovers how to get the look.
P
lant expert Michael Perry, also known as Mr Plant Geek, was introduced to the world of wabi-sabi while working in Japan. The horticulturist, blogger and TV gardener - who hosts The Plant-Based Podcast with Ellen Mary, and provides a wealth of gardening information on his website mrplantgeek.com says it’s an ideal technique for gardeners with little time, and those who want to get back to nature. “Wabi-sabi is still a little bit under the radar,” he says. “I knew about it, because I did a lot of work in Japan, and realised what a lovely way it was for people to feel more relaxed about gardening.” Here, he offers the low-down on wabi-sabi, and how you can get the look in your garden.
What is wabi-sabi? “Wabi-sabi comes from Buddhist teachings and it’s basically allowing nature to influence and enhance man-made objects.” How does that relate to gardens? “The teaching can be translated into gardens, so just as an overview, that might mean allowing a gate hinge to rust, allowing plants to go to seed, allowing rockery plants to topple over where they shouldn’t be. It’s about having that little relaxed angle to your outdoor space. That’s what the philosophy is about.” So, it doesn’t recommend neatness, then? “No, it’s the opposite. Wabi-sabi is about allowing gardens to do their own thing and not to manicure or titivate them too much. It’s about allowing the things that nature does to happen. That then softens the scene and makes things more relaxed, more mindful.” Does it matter what size garden you have? “You can do it in whatever space, allowing nature to come in and letting the garden age naturally, allowing moss to grow on pathways over rocks, even leaving some pretty weeds, such as clover, in the lawn. It should be a perfect marriage between what is man-made and allowing it to age with algae or moss.” What should you do with your plants? “Allow them to intermingle and not be these neat little soldiers sitting eight inches apart. For instance, let clematis weave through borders. Plants that are airy and open - such as thalictrum and Verbena bonariensis - are good, as well as plants which selfseed freely, such as cerinthe and violas. Is there a fine line between letting nature take the lead and the garden looking messy?
8 8 J U LY 2 0 2 0
How can you get the look? “Allow hard landscaping to age. Allow algae to grow on walls and rocks, grow plants through paving - it could be thyme or chamomile or anything that’s going to soften the edges and give a more naturalistic feel to it. If you have fencing, allow a climbing plant to run a bit more wild on that than you usually would. You could intermingle climbing plants, such as honeysuckle and clematis, to give you a more natural, relaxed look. A lot of people train clematis neatly on a column or a trellis or a fence. Just think about it a little bit differently.” Go back to nature “A lot of wabi-sabi style is allowing nature to play a bit part, so keeping logs for wildlife habitats would fit in. Also, use old twigs for supports rather than neat bamboo canes. At the end of the season, allow plants to run to seed and give you different autumn and winter textures and colours.” Can you create a wabi-sabi look indoors? “Yes. Houseplants may be in individual containers but you can always group them together for a more natural appearance. They don’t have to be standing apart like neat little soldiers. They can be intermingling as the foliage dances from one pot to another.”

Gardens of the Future
Tougher plants, smaller plots and more communal spaces may all form the gardens of the future. Hannah Stephenson finds out more.
G
ardens are extremely important for both physical and mental wellbeing - which has become increasingly apparent this year. But what are they going to look like in the future? “We are finally starting to re-evaluate how we spend our leisure time and appreciate the real benefits, both mental and physical, that access to the outside world provides,” says award-winning designer Joe Perkins (joeperkinsdesign.com), who won a gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show last year with his Facebook-sponsored garden Beyond The Screen. “These factors, along with our changing climate and the need to protect and support wildlife, will have greater significance for designers when it comes to planning gardens, and means that gardens could look radically different in 10 or 20 years’ time.” Here, Perkins shares more thoughts on what gardens of the future could look like... Will gardens be smaller? “As the price and pressure on available land becomes greater and we extend our interior living spaces, gardens will be smaller. We will see a mixture of balcony and roof space with limited outdoor areas at ground level.” What about lawns? “Manicured lawns will become, for the most part, a thing of the past. Essentially a green desert for
9 0 J U LY 2 0 2 0
wildlife, they have little benefit and they will be replaced with either wildflower versions or removed and replaced with productive areas or larger flower and shrub borders. “Social media is flooded with nature appreciation at the moment, so I hope that a more relaxed approach to gardens will start to emerge, with the focus less on control of wildlife and more in support of it.” How will technology play a part? “Walls and boundaries will become clothed with plants and we could see advanced hydroponics being used to transform our spaces into hi-tech allotments, growing fruit and veg very productively with a minimum requirement for space, water and nutrients. We could even turn our roofs green to help improve air quality, as well as insulate our homes.” Will outdoor socialising change? “Socialising has always been a priority in the garden, so I believe gardens of the future will incorporate more permanent places that we will use year-round. No more dragging the garden furniture out of the shed and dusting off the umbrella; we will have covered, heated areas for eating, entertaining and even working, now that we have all proved that we can do this from home. “Practically, these areas will allow us to use make the most of the changing climate too, enabling us to escape the downpours and provide shade through the hotter dry spells.” Will plant choices change? “Our plant choices will need to change and we will need to select varieties that are more resilient to extreme weathers, choosing plants that cope with high winds and flooding followed by long periods
“These factors, along with our changing climate and the need to protect and support wildlife, will have greater significance for designers when it comes to planning gardens, and means that gardens could look radically different in 10 or 20 years’ time”

of hot dry weather. “Southern France, northern Italy and either side of the Pyrenees can provide us with inspiration and many of the plants that thrive there are familiar to us already. Iris pallida, agapanthus, many of the herbs, as well as tough characters like acanthus and cistus will work well. “Some from further south, such as the European chain fern (Woodwardia radicans) and even the more exotic palms such as Phoenix canariensis will start to migrate northwards. We could even see abutilon, hibiscus or Prunus dulcis (almond) in drier parts of the UK such as East Anglia.” What will be the major emphasis? “Planting for pollinators is crucial, as we all know, but will become more so as the growth cycle of plants becomes longer. Higher average temperatures will mean earlier activity from animals such as the solitary bee. “Providing food sources throughout the year for these creatures is something we should be thinking about as gardeners and designers.”

Could smaller trees gain popularity? “Trees have a vital role in mitigating flooding, alleviating rising temperatures, cleaning the air and preventing soil erosion and yet few people would contemplate planting one in their garden, let alone on their balcony. “Acer palmatum, Amelanchier lamarckii, Malus domestica are all varieties that can be grown in pots and have almost year-round interest with blossom, fruit and winter colour. “We need to get behind creating urban forests. Think of the trees of Singapore that cloak the sides of skyscrapers. There are many small trees we can plant in our gardens which contribute to this urban forest: Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’, Malus toringo, Stewartia monodelphato.” What about communal gardens? “I would hope we would have greater access to larger areas of communal gardens or landscapes, areas with diverse habitat and productive gardens, accessible for our enjoyment and wellbeing, especially when our collective mental and physical health is under threat, but which also provide critical homes for wildlife.”

A TREE HOUSE For Your Children
I
t’s a dream of many children to own their own tree house where they can escape and immerse themselves in fantasy and imagination. The tree house has long been a symbol of the freedom of youth, and of creativity running wild. Tree houses have changed over the years, from rickety and unsafe structures, to modern designs that now even incorporate swings, slides and climbing frames. Despite their evolution, their popularity has remained consistent. When you really want to give your kids the ultimate custom tree house or wooden playhouse for the garden, getting a bespoke timber building from skilled craftsmen guarantees you get exactly what you want! The shops are full of playhouses barely big enough for the children’s toys and with a similar limited shelf life! If you really want to give your children a

playhouse or tree house that lasts their whole childhood, bespoke wooden buildings are ideal. Bespoke treehouses are a big trend in many gardens; with elaborate designs built high up on stilts, within and around branches. They can take on many different shapes sizes, colours and themes, too, and feature a number of cute accessories and fun activities to keep kids entertained throughout the summer! And you don’t need a tree to have a tree house. It can be built in the right location for you. The areas surrounding your tree house could be landscaped with shrubs, trees or a lawn - whatever is needed to enhance the appearance of your treehouse. Your children’s safety is of paramount importance. The construction process of a treehouse can be demanding - not kids’ stuff at all; requiring a great deal of planning and ensuring European safety standards are met. Approach specialist tree house companies and get recommendations from friends. It is crucial that you receive professional advice and guidance, with construction and installation done by experts to keep your child safe. Provide them with a fantasy hideaway in natural surroundings by making a part of the garden their own. www.cheekymonkeytreehouses.com

HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR GARDEN IN ONE EASY STEP!
2020 is the year that ‘staying in’ became the new ‘going out’ and with much of the UK likely to spend the summer at home, this is the perfect time to invest in carrying out home improvements, especially in your garden. The COVID-19 pandemic has completely transformed how we live, work, travel and socialise, and none of us know how and when we will ever be able to return to some form of ‘normality’ or even what the new ‘norm’ will look like! Therefore, you probably won’t be surprised to hear that even when the government decides to permit travel abroad, many people will still feel too anxious to travel and are considering investing their holiday budget into home improvements instead, by creating their very own ‘slice of paradise’ in their gardens. A garden room is a fantastic investment that will bring any garden alive, providing endless opportunities and possibilities.
A SOUND INVESTMENT! You might think that adding a garden room to your property is extravagant at first but look a little deeper and you’ll soon discover that it can be a very good investment. Even the smallest garden rooms can make a garden look impressive and add the ‘wow factor’. This will make any property stand out against the competition and it is reported that houses with garden rooms tend to have a higher number of viewings, which in turn makes it likelier to sell quickly. It’s hard to put an exact figure on how much money a garden room will add to your property as there are lots of things that affect the price of a property from the location to the space available. However, most garden rooms add approximately five per cent to the value of a property which is often more than enough to cover the price of 9 6 J U LY 2 0 2 0

previous coatings and finishings and degrease with methylated spirits. And having closely followed the painting instructions, you can then look forward to the fun bit of styling up the seating. 4. Build a wall Not that you don’t want to see your neighbours, but building your own wall can change the whole look of your patio or garden, and create separate areas. You could even build a BBQ area to make the most of staying at home this summer. Heather Foo, regional sales manager at Bradstone says their Easy Stack Walling is a great way to change the style of your garden. Whether to demarcate a seating area or perhaps separate two different garden terrains, she says even a low-lying wall can add a bit of depth and texture to your outdoor space. And as she points out, it’s ideal for novice DIYers, as the hollow bricks can simply be stacked and bonded together with a suitable sealant, and then filled with concrete to create a stable base for a feature wall.
W
ith summer well within our sights, there couldn’t be a better time to home in on design ideas and projects outside, preferably under blue skies. Of course, when it comes to DIY, some might say confidence is key. But with the right tools and a little guidance, it is possible to reimagine your outdoor space and style it up for when the time comes for those much longed for summer socials. And having made the most of your time at home being super-duper organised, you’ll be able to showcase your achievements, when we finally throw open our doors. In the meantime, here’s how to get those projects off the ground...
1. Celebrate ‘happy hour’ in your own garden Building an outdoor bar can be the next best thing to visiting your local. Splash out on a pre-assembled drinking hole - Argos sells one that comes with a couple of stools, or opt for a tiki style, stocked at places like Wayfair and John Lewis. Or if you’re ultra handy, knock your own up from wood or pallets, or upcycle an old bookcase. Add some theatre to your stylish serves, by decorating with bunting, furnishing with bottles of spirits and juices, and adding a selection of stemware. Grab an ice bucket and fill with beers and spritzers, and you’ve made the perfect pub in the garden. 2. Paint your sunroom Think South of France, olive groves, and a courtyard with a lovely sun trap and you’ve found your colour. This Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Arles - a rich, deep yellow - is inspired by Arles in the heart of Provence, and inspiration behind some of Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous paintings. Paint the walls of your sun room, conservatory, garage or summer house - and even some wooden furniture too - for a fresh new look. 3. Make wooden furniture look like new Sadolin’s Classic Wood Protection in Light Oak is ideal for garden furniture, decking and large timber surfaces; and will breathe new life into weathered pieces. Available in a wide range of wood colours, you’re sure to find one you like. For old and previously treated timber, you’ll need to sand down

5. Light up your space With everything coming into bloom, it’s only natural you’ll want to put the spotlight on your best borders and flower beds. And, on sultry summer evenings, ambient lighting makes for a relaxed, luxe atmosphere. Try LED torch lights with a flickering candle effect, which are quick and easy to install, outdoor pendants, string lights and bordering your garden with lanterns and spikes. Alternatively, Paul Davey, category director for Timber, Hardware and Electrical at Wickes, says wall sconces and up/down lights are a compact way of illuminating large areas. Or, for a more traditional evening option: “A fire pit can be used as a great statement and centrepiece, providing not only light, but the opportunity to freely roast marshmallows with the family.”

While most of us cannot afford the luxury of owning a roof terrace, while the sun is out in London, it is hard not to look up and dream about spending an afternoon basking on your own luxurious roof terrace
A roof with a view F
or full-scale entertaining or quietly admiring the sunset in the evening, there is no doubt that a good roof terrace can be the main attraction of a property. Rooftop gardens provide an oasis of calm from the hustle and bustle of London. They say that typical urban Georgian and Victorian streets have the potential for roof terraces, while modern apartment blocks need them to compensate for the lack of private gardens. They are the ultimate refuge from the stresses of city life and can raise the value of your property. You might be after an entertaining space with a comfortable seating or alfresco dining area and a hot tub, or plants, shrubs, and even a lawn! All of which can be enhanced by soft lighting.
“They are the ultimate refuge from the stresses of city life and can raise the value of your property” If you’re considering creating your own oasis above the eaves, however, there are vital considerations to take into account. If the space overlooks other properties or you want to build substantial walls, for example, then planning permission is likely to be required even if you are converting an existing flat roof. Whatever layout you choose, take account of the view. Whether you are looking out across the Thames or have an attractive view of the city, make the most of it in your design. Organise your area to maximise good views, maybe framing them with tall container plants or pencil junipers. Decking is a good choice for a roof terrace or balcony because it’s warm underfoot, easy to work 1 0 0 J U LY 2 0 2 0
with and lightweight for carrying up several flights. Choose western red cedar or hardwoods such as ipe or balau (from a sustainable source). They retain their colour, last much longer than softwood decks and look better too. If your roof terrace abuts a room with wooden flooring, use decking of a similar colour to help blur the boundaries between the two. Most roof terraces are covered in a waterproof membrane, while others have a fireproof layer, so be careful not to puncture them with fixtures and fittings. A rooftop terrace in the capital allows you to enjoy London from a completely different perspective.

Discover St Dunstan’s St Dunstan’s College announces new format for upcoming open events
S
t Dunstan’s College, Catford, south London, has taken the decision that open events planned for September to November 2020 can no longer go ahead in their usual format following the Coronavirus pandemic. Last year, the College welcomed more than 2,000 individuals to St Dunstan’s across six major events; however, the safety of our staff, pupils and visiting families is paramount. The College is delighted to announce that it will be launching a series of smaller ‘Discover St Dunstan’s’ events that will allow prospective families to visit the site safely and following social distancing guidelines. There will also be a series of virtual events with the leadership team for prospective families to join. Speaking about the new format, Director of Marketing, Admissions and Development, Mrs Isabelle Blake-James explained: ‘We are delighted to be able to still offer prospective families a chance to visit the College site and experience a taste of life at St Dunstan’s. ‘We are busy planning the new look open events

and can’t wait to share with prospective families.’ Open events planned for the autumn come at an exciting time for St Dunstan’s, as in September 2021 a new Junior School building, STEM Centre and Sixth Form Centre will open. The new facilities will include state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories, new outdoor learning spaces and a Sixth Form café. The developments will also include a performing arts centre and a new outdoor space for pupils, which they have voted to call ‘The Plaza’. The College has been closed for most pupils since the lockdown started in March, however, pupils from Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 returned on Monday 1 June following government advice. During the Coronavirus crisis, the College has been producing PPE for local hospitals, hospices and GP surgeries and has remained open for children of key workers. Further details about the ‘Discover St Dunstan’s’ will be announced in due course. Visit our website to find out more: www.stdunstans.org.uk

The principles of preparing for a whole school reopening
The new Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s talks about planning for a September reopening, for all age groups, and his vision for the Collegiate.
S
tarting the next academic year as the new Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate will be a very different experience to that which I had envisioned when I was first appointed. Having been in education over 30 years, 17 of these as the head of large UK and international independent schools, I’ve seen some change in practice. The challenges facing schools across the UK in preparing for full reopening in September - as we’ve heard said many times already - are unprecedented. With key worker and Forces boarding students staying on campus throughout lockdown, and a successful welcoming of our Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 cohort in early June, we now have plenty of experience of operating in a controlled lockdown. QE has complied with, and gone beyond, the measures required by government and we have committed ourselves to the BSA School Safe Charter. We are using this experience to ensure we have adaptable plans in place, as we welcome students back at the start of term. We have issued guidance to our students and parents on the measures we are taking to keep the campus as safe as possible, whilst maintaining the welcoming and happy atmosphere that they know and love. Our location is ideal. Queen Ethelburga’s benefits from a highly secure, rural campus, set in the stunning North Yorkshire countryside.
1 0 6 J U LY 2 0 2 0
It is looking increasingly likely that school will be reopening in September without the social distance restrictions we have now, however, we are still planning to bring our boarders back two weeks earlier in August, so that we can offer quarantine if necessary, but also to offer a curriculum preparation programme for the year ahead. Our priorities for the next year build on QE’s success story to date. We know that the key to academic excellence is the consistency in quality of teaching, therefore this will always be the focus for the Collegiate. Continuous improvement is also key. We will be reflecting on everything we do and will always seek feedback from our students, parents and teachers so that we understand our community needs and find ways to meet them. We will continue to find ways to broaden and improve the curriculum and enrichment opportunities we offer, and extend students learning beyond the restraints of the classroom. We will use our recent online teaching and learning experience to develop our IT strategy, taking the opportunity to develop e-learning in an impactful way. Through our academic, pastoral and enrichment programmes, we will continue to develop the personal qualities of our students, such as leadership, resilience, critical thinking and responsibility. As always, we will prioritise the safeguarding, health and wellbeing of all our students and staff. To find out more about QE, visit www.qe.org

How parents can help graduates A
s a parent, you may be wondering why it is so difficult for your child to land a job if they have recently graduated. If they graduated last year or the year before and are still underemployed, then both you and they will be under extreme stress by now. The truth is, it has become increasingly difficult for graduates to land graduate jobs. It may seem ludicrous, but even before the pandemic there was an oversupply of graduates in the job market. With the market down 60% this year, most graduates are now having to compete with up to 300 others for every position. Their task is made even more difficult as 90% of them don’t know: • How to create an employer-ready CV. • What career would suit them best. • How to interview well. • About the nine key employability skills – understanding and being able to articulate these skills is fundamental to landing a graduate-level job. Most graduates and many parents still think a great degree from a good university will ensure career success. With 85% now graduating with a 1st or a 2:1 and half with a master’s degree as well, academic excellence counts for a lot less with employers. They want graduates they don’t need to train, who are fully work-ready and have demonstrated they understand the world of work. Therefore, if recent graduates don’t have these skills, they are going to have to acquire them fast. You should encourage your child to take online courses, carry out volunteer work and see what you and any contacts you may have can do to get them vital work experience. Internships will be critical. Fact: 95% of employers will not consider a graduate who has no work experience. So, what can you do to help? • Understand and convey the importance of the 1 0 8 J U LY 2 0 2 0
nine key employability skills. • Work out with them what type of career would suit them best. • Ensure their CV has their employability skills clearly laid out. If their CV is not gaining them interviews then there is something wrong with it. • Concentrate on their interview technique and competency. The average graduate spends just 36 minutes preparing for this life-changing event! We spend 36 hours prepping graduates, because preparation makes for perfection. • Make sure they understand it’s going to be a difficult transition this year… If they aren’t completely confident, think about coaching them yourself or getting specialist help. Now more than ever, getting that elusive first foot on the ladder needs dedication, resilience and expert help. You wouldn’t expect your son or daughter to achieve academic, sporting or artistic success without coaching, would you? It’s the same with graduate career success. Managers get specialist ongoing job coaching from their employers. Shouldn’t graduates be given the same opportunities to help them become the ideal candidate?

ArtsEd introduces The Green Roof A
rtsEd Day School & Sixth Form is an exceptional independent school, where the performing arts sit at the heart of an outstanding education. Pupils immerse themselves in high-calibre academic study whilst developing their talent and their passion for performance. The school moved to Chiswick over thirty years ago, making relatively few changes to 14 Bath Road, a building originally created for Chiswick Polytechnic. In 2013, they made their first improvements with the opening of the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation Theatre, a West End quality performance space that delights performers and audiences alike. In early 2021, pupils will be moving into a brand-new suite of dance studios, classrooms and communal spaces, currently under construction. And what’s more, this new building has a jewel in its crown – The Green Roof. A versatile and welcoming outdoor space, this rooftop terrace has an adjoining drama studio and lovely views over London. Excited about the new development, Headteacher Adrian Blake says: “This wonderful new outdoor space will provide brand new opportunities to encourage our pupils’ zest for learning, enhance our outstanding pastoral care and sprinkle a little extra magic on every school day.” Always eco-conscious, ArtsEd’s new building has been designed with environmental issues in mind. The Green Roof plays a large part with bee and butterfly friendly planting a priority and a solar panel ‘field’ taking advantage of a new flat roof. In addition to being a lovely place to admire the view,

Les Vins de Bandol T
here is nothing better than a glass of cold rosé on a summer’s night, don’t you agree? To find some of the best rosé wines travelling to Provence is a must. The area is known for its wine but particularly in Britain we know it for its rosé. The truth is down in southern Provence there is an area that is unique in its wine making due to its location close to the Mediterranean Sea but sheltered by the hills of the Sainte-Baume to the north. Bandol wines have a long history dating back to the 6th century BC when the Phocaeans landed on the Provence shores. Along with the amphoras they brought the wine and the vine. During the Roman Empire the vineyards were created around Le Castellet, clinging to the hillside they were planted in terraced rows, as they still are today. Early fame for the Bandol wine came with the enterprising wine growers who realised wine could travel easily by sea, at the same time that the maritime trade was developing and the deep-water harbour of Bandol was constructed. To this day certain vineyards export much of their wine, with the U.S. being a strong market. Today the vineyards, of approximately 1,600 hectares, benefit from more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year with the Mediterranean protecting them from the heat and the hills to the north protecting them from the cold. The soil is essentially marl and limestone and the wines prosper in the prized aridity of the poor soils, which befits the grands Crus. Bandol was one of the first areas to receive the A.O.P appellation in 1941 with strict rules that have to be abided by. Initially the “viticulteur” has to send a request to find out if his land is within the AOC Bandol zones. Once this is agreed an application then is made to buy the vines. The vineyards are also restricted to 5,000 plants per hectare with the harvesting only being done by hand with pickers selecting the ripest grapes. The regulations include the percentages of certain varieties of grapes within the wine and the time it is in the old oak barrel, which for red needs to be at least 18 months.
1 2 6 J U LY 2 0 2 0
Although rosé is nearly 80% of the Bandol production it is the 15% of red wines that the area is famous for. The Mourvèdre is the main grape in the Bandol red (50%-95%). Using this quantity of such a powerful and spicy grape variety makes for a very charismatic wine – one that certainly would be hard to create in other parts of France, since Mourvèdre will only ripen reliably in a climate as sunny and hot as that which prevails along the shores of the Med. Grenache is the other main component of the Bandol red. To prevent it ripening too soon and bringing too much potential alcohol to the wine the local vignerons plant this variety on the cooler north facing slopes. Although the Bandol red is a perfect wine for cellaring, it is also possible to enjoy all the strength and generosity of youth. This is the paradoxical nature of Bandol red wine. For those who have the luxury to bide time, laying down the wine for 10-25 years produces an amazing wine. The Bandol rosé in contrast is a wine to drink young although certain bottles also benefit from laying them down. Mourvèdre is again a key grape (20%) within the rosé blend along with Grenache and Cinsault and give a well-structured, palecoloured wine with delicate salmon hues. The Bandol white is produced in a lower quantity but this should not dissuade you. The “viticulteurs” take delight in surprising wine lovers with their white wines made from Clairette (which needs to be at least 50%), Ugni Blanc and Bourboulenc. There is nothing better than sitting along the Provence coast with a beautiful glass of Bandol wine. With sixty-seven vineyards you could be sat for a long time. www.olivesandvines.eu

HOW WILL OUR HOLIDAYS LOOK IN THE FUTURE?
The pandemic will change the way we travel, but what can we expect when we finally pack our suitcases? Sarah Marshall asks the experts.
S
everal weeks ago, the idea of even stepping outside your local area felt like a fantasy. But slowly, as lockdown restrictions ease, the situation seems to be changing, and there’s a glimmer of hope it might be possible to enjoy a holiday this year. The situation, however, is far from normal. From beach breaks to escorted tours, the way we travel will look very different from now on. Some hotels, tour operators and cruise lines have already published details hinting at how we might navigate a new world of socially-distanced sunseeking and ethical escapism. These are some of the trends starting to emerge.
Caravans and cottages promise peace of mind Although the race is on to squeeze in a summer holiday, it’s likely, once government advice allows, that most people will choose to staycation. Along with self-catering cottages, demand for caravans and holiday parks is set to be high. According to Auto Trader, searches for caravans are up by 18% compared to this time last year. Hardly surprising given The National Caravan Council’s claim that caravans and motorhomes are ‘socially distanced by design’. There are no issues with shared facilities, they say, and camping lots are generally set five or six metres apart. Lloyd Figgins, chairman of the Travel Risk & Incident Prevention (TRIP) Group, says holiday parks are a low-risk option for similar reasons. “With everything included within the four walls of your holiday park rental, your holiday can be as safe as being at home,” he says. “There’s also the advantage that many holiday parks are situated in stunning locations, allowing you to get outside and enjoy the countryside or nearby beach, while still being able to maintain social distancing.” 1 2 8 J U LY 2 0 2 0
It’s hygiene on the high seas from now on The return to normality is set to be tricky for cruise ships. The floating hotels have a history of upsets with virus outbreaks, and companies are having to work much harder to regain their customers’ trust. But many have already taken steps towards

TRAVEL
making their fleets as germ-free as possible. All passengers travelling on Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet will be given a touchless temperature screening every time they return to the ship and when entering dining areas. Capacity will also be limited to allow social distancing on board. Princess, meanwhile, have pledged to constantly monitor the global health map, cancelling stops and modifying itineraries if areas have been impacted by Covid-19 outbreaks. Self-service buffets will be heavily reduced and hand sanitiser will flow like water. River cruise company Uniworld has gone even further by discontinuing self-service snacks, removing all books and magazines, discontinuing buffets and introducing set mealtimes.
Tech will replace human contact in hotels As hotels across Europe plan to reopen, companies have adopted a range of new measures to make sure their guests feel safe. Although reputable hotels already have high hygiene standards, new levels of meticulous disinfecting and scrubbing are set to become the norm. Groups such as Wyndham, who have an international portfolio, are working with Ecolab products specialised to prevent the spread of infections on surfaces, and have promised supplies of PPE to staff. Even smaller, family-run resorts, like Elivi Skiathos in Greece, are upping their cleanliness game: public areas will be regularly disinfected and online check-in will reduce face-to-face contact. OYO, who have properties ranging from guesthouses and B&Bs, to city-centre hotels, are introducing a new system of “sanitised stays”. Their plans include: removing excess furniture from lobby areas to discourage guests from lounging; presenting disinfected room keys and TV remotes in zip-lock bags; and limiting lifts to one group of room occupants at a time. Ikos, who have luxury all-inclusive beach resorts in Greece and Spain, have designed a new Infinite Care Protocol. Staff will be regularly tested for Covid-19, and anyone staying at the properties given a free rapid antibody test upon arrival. An in-resort ambulance and 24-hour medical support are reassuring additions, while a mobile app will allow contactless room service, restaurant and spa bookings.
Group tours set to connect in new ways An entrepreneur and philanthropist who started one of the world’s most successful group tour companies with nothing more than a vision and a credit card, Bruce Poon Tip is an agile thinker. Rather than dwell on the negatives of the pandemic, The G Adventures founder and CEO sees this as an opportunity to reflect upon and readjust the way we travel. 1 3 0 J U LY 2 0 2 0
“Why fight so damn hard to return to normal when the opportunity to transform travel is on the other side of this mess?” he says. He’s used his time in lockdown to write a free e-book, Unlearn: The Year The Earth Stood Still, detailing his thoughts. (Download it at unlearn. travel.) The future, he says, revolves around the power and privilege we have as travellers to make informed choices about where our money is invested. “At the moment, people are being sold amenities - the biggest ship, the biggest go track etc - and they are forgetting about the destination. This is no longer travel in my mind,” he writes. “The travel industry has made us into tourists, consumers of culture, rather than contributors to it. From now on, he suggests we should take a different approach: “Destination and local people are key.” For that reason, G Adventures will continue to use local restaurants on their tours with options for “grab and go” boxes and al fresco dining. Affordable ‘My Own Room’ rates will also make it easier for solo travellers to avoid sharing.

from travels, a walk in nature, a memorable experience or an afternoon with your loved ones. The choice was made very naturally on the subject of the rose print, as a perfect link between a strong symbol of British identity, timeless chic and, in ancient Greece, the symbol of Aphrodite: the goddess of beauty and love. The mini rose print has a feel of the artist Monet’s ‘Lily Pond‘ collection which is a favourite of our designer. The large flower print was inspired whilst promenading the wonderful city of Madrid, and the beautiful flora in El Retiro, Madrid’s (royal) park. A fabulous getaway in the centre of Madrid. The colours were taken from the natural surroundings: brown earth, flame red flowers and blue skies. “I was inspired to design the mini rose and the larger flower prints during my travels. I chose a rich, soft, sateen and a lighter floaty georgette fabric in referencing old Hollywood glamour in soft romantic styling. ” Jayne, Winser London Designer Winser London was launched in 2013 by globally-respected businesswoman Kim Winser OBE, to meet the needs of busy women – adapting to the demands of our multi-faceted lives. beautiful bespoke jewellery M uch of our day here at Gerry Summers is dedicated to making bespoke pieces of jewellery or remodelling clients’ existing jewellery. The commissioning process starts with a consultation where we discuss your ideas. Gerry, an award-winning master jeweller, will work with you to ensure that your piece is entirely unique to you, or your loved one. He will create a series of drawings for your consideration. Beauty of line, form, colour and scale are key elements in the design process, and so too are the elements that reflect your sentiment for the piece. Gerry has access to the most exquisite of precious stones, and if your commission is gem-set, you’ll be invited to view a selection of gems from which you can choose. Remodelling a piece of treasured jewellery allows you to preserve the sentiment and memories behind a piece while endowing it with new life. The process is similar to a bespoke commission. Equally, Gerry is happy to work with loose stones you may have. The Kimono Collection P
oison Pure Silk, the up-and-coming brand by the stylist Eugenia Marescalco, is based in the stunning city of Noto, situated in South-Eastern Sicily, among baroque balconies, a crystal clear sea and the scent of sweet almonds. Inspired by her travels in Japan, Eugenia conceived her brand as a project that harmoniously mixes distant cultures, combining the exquisite elegance of Japanese style with Italian sartorial tradition in “The Kimono Collection”, where Made in Italy joins the East. The Kimono Collection showcases unique pieces, each handmade from 100% Italian pure silk. Silk patterns range from floral to typically Sicilian designs, such as citrus fruits and majolicas, also including jungle and tropical atmospheres, as the last catwalks showed. The peculiarity of the product lies precisely in the raw material, one of the most refined and luxurious fabrics in the world. carried out with love and passion. This western version of the traditional Japanese kimono has proved to be a versatile and easy to wear garment: a perfect match with the right outfit in any occasion, weather dressy or casual; it can be perfectly matched both with a swimsuit and a cocktail dress. It can be a colourful outerwear or a comfortable dressing gown. Just choose pattern and length of the model and you’ll have a unique garment that no one else in the world owns. A kimono by Poison Pure Silk is the perfect compromise between fashion, luxury and craftsmanship, both an easy and sophisticated dress for all seasons. A parallel kimono collection called “Beyond the Mirror” has recently been added. “Beyond the Mirror” presents a selection of kimonos inspired by seven great women from the worlds of entertainment, art, science and myth (Artemisia Gentileschi, Hedy Lamarr, Kiyohara Tama, Pandora, Hypatia) including a special dedication to Eugenia’s mother. A concept collection that wants to focus the attention on overcoming the appearances and stereotypes which have often afflicted women of all ages. For the Beyond the Mirror Collection the silk has prints in intense colours and flowers for a scenographic result: a wonderful bouquet of roses, anthurium and cherry flowers, for a strong and at the same time delicate result, as the women to whom this Collection is dedicated. But Poison Pure Silk is constantly evolving, always tryng to include other artisans and artist while promoting the brand, with original illustrations by young artists or special collaborations with other craftsmen.

STRAPPY SANDALS
FASHI ON, HEALTH & BEAUTY
A pair of sexy, ankle-tie sandals is a must-have this summer. Katie Wright reveals her top picks.
I
f you make one purchase from the shoe department this summer, it has to be a pair of strappy sandals - but not just any kind. The focus is firmly on the ankles this season, at least according to the catwalks, where skiny straps, ropes and ribbons of all kinds were wound round models’ legs. At JW Anderson, the rope-ties of flat sandals were wrapped round trouser legs too, proving the transitional power of this trend - but now that we’re heading into summer proper, it’s all about bare legs and sexy sandals. That doesn’t mean you have to totter around on stiletto heels, however. Take your cue from Toga SS20 with Nineties-style square-toed flats, or chunky ‘flatforms’ for a bit of height with maximum comfort. As for stilettos, there are plenty of party-ready options out there too, from rainbow-bright hues to metallic tones with chain detailing. Spurred by the catwalk focus on natural materials such as raffia, espadrilles with extra-long ankle ties are making a comeback too. Whether flat or wedge, neutral toned or in a summery bright, they’re perfect for pairing with floaty dresses or linen shorts.

A SWITCHBAG – ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES ELEGANT ORGANIZATIONAL TALENT: Utmon es pour Paris unites luxury, timeless elegance and organization with its Switchbag. The pochettes coordinate well with the interior of an elegant tote bag or a simple shopper and, as a clutch, rival the best designer models. The exterior design is thus as timeless as it is elegant: a narrow trapezoidal shape with a minimalistic magnetic closure; side-on, the lines form a unique ‘heart shape’. The leather moulds itself into the implied heart – a visual homage by Erzsébet I. Wagner to her design, which is a true affair of the heart for her. Designed in Germany, all bags and accessories are elaborately handcrafted in highquality materials both to meet the highest standards and also to keep them looking good for a long time.
MINIMALISM IN PERFECTION: the geometrical trapezoidal form, the subtle magnet fastener, the decent outside pocket, plainly sewed – UTMON ES POUR PARIS model renounces superfluous details, in favour of a clear, high quality. The Switchbag is an all-rounder – just like its owner. It is designed for women who are always on the move, who fulfil countless roles at once, have a lot on their to-do list and just as much in their bags, but who do not wish to waste any time packing up all their equipment whenever they move from one place to the next. SMALL BLACK DRESS: the basis model of UTMON ES POUR PARIS is held in timeless black, only a subtle stamp and a golden ornament decorate the clear design. The bright red inside leather sets a fashionable contrast and lightens the bag to make the object inside easier to spot and much time is saved. ‘UTMON ES POUR PARIS is an abbreviation of Tout mon esprit pour Paris – the inspiration behind the brand. Erzsébet I. Wagner arrived in the city of love at the age of 19 and found in it a 1 4 8 J U LY 2 0 2 0

How to Cope When There’s Wall to Wall Grass Pollen G
rass isn’t easy to avoid when it’s all around us, in gardens, parks, roadsides, meadows and verges. Around 95% of hay fever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen, which affects around 2 million people in London. Airborne allergens expert, Max Wiseberg offers some practical tips to sufferers to help sufferers survive this summer symptom free… “Antihistamine tablets, capsules and nasal sprays,” comments Max, “can relieve sneezing, itchy, runny eyes, skin irritation, itchy nose and throat – but are less effective for nasal congestion. Allergen barrier balms help trap the pollen before it gets in the body where it can cause symptoms. Steroid nasal sprays and drops reduce inflammation in the nose; they work best for clearing nasal symptoms. Eye drops may reduce itchy, watering, swollen eyes.” “Create your own hay fever first aid kit, with eye drops, one or more natural product, only one antihistamine and only one steroid nasal spray. This can prove very effective, especially when pollen counts are very high or you suffer with severe symptoms. Always ask your GP or pharmacist before combining treatments.” “Avoiding the allergen is key with any allergy, and it’s the same with hay fever.” “Apply a drug-free allergen barrier balm, such as HayMax (www.haymax.biz), to the nostrils and around the bones of the eyes in the morning, throughout the day and at night to trap pollen before it enters the body. HayMax has been proven to trap dust and pet allergens and more than a third of pollen before it enters the body [1]. Less allergen, less reaction. As they are drug-free they are suitable for children, pregnant and breast-feeding women, and whilst driving or operating machinery.” “Tie your hair up before going outdoors and wear a hat, cap or other head cover to prevent
pollen particles being caught in your hair. And wear wraparound sunglasses to prevent them coming in contact with your eyes.” “As well as washing your hands, wash your face as soon as you get indoors. This will wash away allergens so that they can’t cause a reaction.” “Vacuum the house regularly, especially beds and fabrics to remove pollen, and damp dust surfaces – this removes the pollen without dispersing it into the air. Keep windows and doors closed and use an air conditioner to capture the pollen particles.” “Dry your clothes indoors rather than on an outdoors clothes line to prevent pollen particles being blown onto the clothes by the wind. Or dry in middle of day when there’s less pollen in the air – avoid mornings and evenings when the pollen count is at its highest” www.haymax.biz Reference: [1] Chief Investigator: Professor Roy Kennedy, Principal Investigator: Louise Robertson, Researcher: Dr Mary Lewis, National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit, 1st February 2012.

DARK LIPS
FOR THE SUMMER
asks a make-up artist how to get the vampy look.
Prudence Wade
A
s summer approaches, we tend to put our winter clothes away and bring out our warm weather outfits. The same ethos is often applied to our beauty bags: when the sun comes out, we pack up our dark lipsticks and eyeshadows in favour of brighter colours. However, this doesn’t always have to be the case. While you might associate berry lipsticks with autumn and winter, designers like MaxMara and Rick Owens made a strong case for darker pouts this season. It’s a surprising choice for the spring and summer months, but still totally wearable. It’s a way of experimenting with make-up without having to draw anything wacky on your face, or even learn any new techniques. Admittedly, you don’t want to look like Morticia Addams did your make-up in the middle of summer, which is why we asked Stila’s lead make-up artist Sascha Jackson for her top tips...
Preparation
dry skin,” advises Jackson. It’s not like you need fancy new products to get soft, smooth lips, because there are plenty of home remedies which work just as well. The make-up artist has a few favourite DIY methods of her own, saying: “You can use some lip balm and an old toothbrush and gently scrub your lips until super smooth. Or, my personal favourite is making my own home-made lip scrub using coconut oil and brown sugar (if you only have white then that’s fine too). Mix them together in a small pot and work into the lips for a minute or two, then wipe away. Your lips will be super-smooth and soft.” For super-hydrated lips, you might be tempted to use lip balm or oils before applying lipstick, but Jackson warns against this as they “may hinder the performance of your lipstick - so make sure you wipe away any excess product”.
With any type of make-up, it’s important to prep your skin properly so the products glide on seamlessly. The same logic applies to your lips - and priming them is even more important when you’re wearing a bold, statement colour. “First, exfoliate your lips to get rid of any excess
Luckily, applying lipstick is one of the easiest things you can do in the world of make-up - all you need to do is draw the colour onto the shape of your pout.

However, Jackson says: “The bolder colour, the more precise you will need the finish to be” - so you might want to try something different than just swiping on lipstick. She suggests using a lip brush or a small, dense eyeshadow brush: “Load up the brush, then start by lining your lips, as you would a lip liner. Lining first makes sure you have crisp, neat edges. Then, you can then fill in the middle and any gaps - making sure your lips are evenly coated with product.”
Illamasqua Antimatter Lipstick in Turntable, £10 (was £20)
Finishing off the look Jackson calls this trend for darker lips a “welcome change from the usual summery shades of corals and pinks. But wearing a darker, bold lip in the summer months needs adapting from how you would perhaps wear it in the winter season, to make sure it keeps within the summer vibe.” This means you need to think about how your dark lip pairs with the rest of your make-up. Instead of going for a smokey eye, Jackson says: “I love pairing a dark berry lip with a contrasting pop of colour on the eyes. Nothing bold or crazy - just a bright eyeliner or a wash of a pastel shade will do. Think of wearing a dark berry lip with a yellow eyeliner, or pairing a deep burgundy brown lip with a wash of turquoise shadow.” She also recommends using bright and summery make-up for your skin. “Keep everything light and glowy,” Jackson suggests. “Try using an illuminating primer under your foundation, use highlighter on the cheekbones and high points of the face, and try to keep textures to a cream formula, as opposed to matte powder. This will make sure it sets off against the darker lip and ties in nicely with summer fashion and trends.”

Is Your Skin Looking Older Than You Feel? Blame it on Menopause
Jane Atherton, CEO of Phytomone London answers questions on Menopause Skin Care What’s different about your skin care business? Phytomone is a skin care company dedicated to enhancing menopausal skin. The formulations are all developed with ingredients and special actives which specifically target hormonal skin ageing at the root cause, loss of oestrogen, allowing mature skin to keep looking youthful and radiant. Can the beauty industry help menopausal women? Menopausal skin is definitely ‘a thing’ and I was truly astonished that no other companies were taking this group of women in to account. Women over 45 (which is our demographic) now account for over 58 percent of the beauty market and it is important to stay relevant to their physiological and emotional needs. They don’t necessarily want their skin to look wrinkle free, but they do want it to look the best it possibly can for their age, so enhancement products rather than anti-ageing are far more appealing. Phytomone focus on identifying, fine tuning, upgrading and simplifying the somewhat complicated beauty regimes. For example, Pause Hydra Creme is a cream/serum hybrid which has been carefully formulated to be used as a eye cream and neck cream, as well as a moisturiser and serum. Mature women really don’t want a complex skin care regime, they want all the benefits in the easiest way possible, which our award winning multifunctional products can now offer. 1 6 2 J U LY 2 0 2 0
How else is your business different from others in the market? We have built up an incredible community around Phytomone and supporting menopausal women. Our social media platforms are extremely interactive and informative. Our facebook page has almost 100k followers (fb.com/themenopauseroom) and is the most popular menopause ‘hang-out’ in the UK. Having this strong, trustworthy presence on social media gives us the ability to reach out and connect with our demographic, making them feel like they ‘belong’, during times of uncertainty. We encourage, motivate and inspire women to keep looking and feeling great, optimistic and confident. I’m not sure of any other cosmetic house which offers such support, outside of selling their products. What’s your ultimate goal/ambition? To ensure every women receives the best possible care, advice and knowledge as they enter the mid life transition. For them to fully understand what is happening to their body and the changes they need to make to keep looking youthful, healthy and radiant. Ultimately it would be fabulous to have a Phytomone wellbeing retreat for women to carry on recognising and reaffirming how wonderful they are and how to keep looking and feeling their very best.. I’m meeting Marcella Polzer, founder of accessory label Marc Ella London , at a juice bar in Battersea to get the inside scoop on how she took the leap to start her own business. Her entrepreneurial story begins in 2014. Daughter of an entrepreneur, Marcella found herself in a place she never thought she’d end up in: Insurance. “I don’t think anyone grows up dreaming about working in insurance; as a girl I didn’t even know what it was,” Marcella says, sipping her Energizer juice. “I loved my job, but knew that I had to take the leap at some point and now was as good a time as any.” Marcella went on to launch Marc Ella London — an affordable luxury accessories brand, mainly focusing on handbags. But it wasn’t pre-determined: “Back then, I took a good chunk of time out of my diary to generate ideas and prioritise them. I remember sitting at a restaurant with my husband, trying to cut down a list of 30 ideas to 5.” Today, Marcella has designed more than 90 products, all the while juggling family life. She takes her inspiration from the London scene, her travels across the world, but also family and nature: “I want to create products that are as versatile as they are fashionable. For me, it is a statement of freedom— of the independent woman, always on the move.” I look across the table and see her bag and instantly know what she means; she has an adorable Monty bag sitting next to her (seen above). It’s a bucket bag, and has a soft, origami-like construction. “It’s not just a bucket bag, it can be collapsed or even rolled up, which is perfect for the world traveler and mum alike,” Marcella explains. The Monty bag, it turns out, is named after her newborn son, who is now 5 months’ old. She also

Ultimately, both my family and my business give each other the flexibility so that I can pursue both,” Marcella says. We are both long done with our juices. As we both get up to leave, I can’t help but think what’s next for Marcella and Marc Ella London. She leaves the cafe effortlessly, with her stylish, uniquely recognisable pram, onto her next mission. Yes, that’s what it is… she’s a woman on a mission. About Seashell Magic ‘Seashell Magic’ is made by combining felt fabric and glitter textures in a digital medium. Soft pastel colours promote tranquillity and magical ambiance, which are perfect for viewers who seek to wind down after a hectic day. The randomly oriented seashells remind us to look at a situation at multiple angles. Just like solving a problem, there are various solutions to it. Additionally, the contrast between flat background and gold foil sand grains symbolises the excitement of life itself. Uncertainty breeds fear in us, but they are opportunities for us 1 7 0 J U LY 2 0 2 0
to grow too. Conclusively, ‘Seashell Magic’ signifies the limitless opportunity that awaits us in the future.
About Pine + Mint Foliage ‘Pine + Mint Foliage’ was created initially as a study of non-flowering plants. This process turned into an artwork that aims to harmonise nature with man-made elements. Contrasting the felt fabric textured leaves with the flat white background, this digital artwork juxtaposes sterility to richness. The varied thickness reminds the viewers to stay strong through thick and thin, just like how these plants remain standing through the seasons. Finally, Jessie added the silhouettes in the scattering motifs to signify the depth of exploring Mother Nature. Private commissions are also welcome. Pregnancy and early motherhood during Covid-19 pandemic
T
his different and difficult time is bringing a lot of concern to many generations. “When we are talking about fertility, trying to get pregnant and pregnancy, it can be particularly stressful. It can bring along worry, anxiety and loneliness. We are going into unchartered waters and this, in its own right, brings fear” says renowned King Edward VII’s Hospital fertility expert, Mr Michael Dooley. If you find you’re pregnant or have a new-born whilst in lockdown, the most important thing is to give yourself permission to be upset with the current situation. It’s not what you would have planned or expected, but there can also be hope. Remember, you are not alone. Healthcare professionals are here to help and guide you through this difficult time.
Coronavirus and pregnancy “We are still in the early days of understanding
Covid-19” says Dooley. “New information and data is coming in every day for us to provide advice – this can be difficult for our patients as facts change, and they can get confused. Currently, it does not appear that pregnant women are any more likely to get Covid-19, or if they do catch it, to be seriously unwell.” Usually, patients will get mild flu-like symptoms, although pregnancy may give slightly more aggravated symptoms. Obviously, severity increases as you get older, if you’re immune-compromised or have another medical condition.
Will Covid -19 affect my baby? Mr Dooley says: “There is no evidence that it increases the risk of miscarriage and no evidence that it increases the risk of abnormality. It may transmit vertically at birth, and this is how new-born babies can obtain it. This has been documented anecdotally as well as from two small studies.” You can reduce your chance of catching Covid-19 by routine hand washing, using tissues for facial contact and discarding the tissues in a safe container, and obviously avoiding social contact. “Social isolation is important, and if there is any concern you’ve been in contact with someone who has contracted Covid-19, don’t panic. Self-isolate and monitor your symptoms” explains Dooley. “It is especially important that you continue to listen to and follow the up to date Government guidelines.”
Ante-natal care and labour during Covid-19 Understandably, people are often worried about 1 7 4 J U LY 2 0 2 0

their ante-natal care and how they will be affected. It is important that you talk to your midwife and your medical team – fear of the unknown can be reduced this way. A pregnancy is there to be enjoyed and cherished, so talking to your care team if you feel overwhelmed will really help alleviate worry. “Scans are still being arranged, but there may be some restrictions on when the partner can attend. Certain appointments may also be conducted via phone. However, it is extremely important that if you have any concerns, whatever they are, including decreased movement, bleeding etc, that you still call your midwife or maternity unit or 111” explains Dooley. If you develop a cough, fever, loss of taste or smell, or shortness of breath, it is important that you call 111 and do not attend your scheduled appointment. A lot of these symptoms could be due to other medical conditions, such as a urinary tract infection. However, appropriate care will be offered by specialists who will be well equipped to look after you. “Remember, a lot of health professionals will be wearing PPE. If you have indeed contracted the virus, a lot of hospitals after a Covid-19 infection arrange for a scan to be done 2 weeks later” says Dooley. “If your partner gets symptoms, it is essential that they do not attend the hospital, follow government guidelines and make your hospital aware. They will be able to help you.” During labour, there will be local policies and again, it is important that you talk to your hospital about their policy. “It is important that a plan is put together, and the involvement of your partner
is discussed. This is true for spontaneous labour, induced labour or for caesarean section. There obviously will be a difference in the environment and a lot of the staff may be wearing PPE” says Dooley.
Breast feeding and Covid-19 A lot of new parents are worried about breastfeeding. “At present, there is no evidence you cannot continue with this” explains Dooley. “If you do contract Covid-19, speak to your midwife and follow the latest guidelines but at present, it is advisable to wear masks and take the usual precautions.” Again, with social isolation, all visitors should be avoided.

Osteoarthritis in young people: it doesn’t just affect the elderly O
steoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the UK. It’s a chronic, debilitating condition that affects over 9 million people. However, misconceptions about osteoarthritis proliferate - perhaps most notably, the myth that it only affects the elderly. This is not the case: although older people are more likely to get osteoarthritis (it is, in fact, most common in adults in their mid-40s and older), about 15,000 children and young people also develop this condition.
What is osteoarthritis? King Edward VII’s Hospital physician Dr David Porter explains: “Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that develops when cartilage in the joints wears down over time. Cartilage is a spongy material that’s present at the ends of the bones, to help 1 7 6 J U LY 2 0 2 0
cushion them and prevent them rubbing against each other.” Dr Porter continues: “When cartilage wears down and bones rub against each other causing friction, it leads to pain, stiffness and loss of movement.” Osteoarthritis can affect any joint, but it most commonly affects the hands, knees, hips and spine. It occurs gradually and will eventually become worse over time.
What causes osteoarthritis in the young? The causes in the young generally differ from those of an older person, and include being overweight or obese, leading a sedentary lifestyle, having a job that requires sitting down for long periods of time, and poor posture when sitting for long periods. “Performing regular impact sports, such as football
“When cartilage wears down and bones rub against each other causing friction, it leads to pain, stiffness and loss of movement”
or hockey is also a common cause” explains Dr Porter, an internationally renowned senior physician in sports medicine and previously the Club Doctor at Chelsea FC. “A family history of osteoarthritis, or having diabetes or a disorder related to growth hormones can also be a cause” says Dr Porter. “Osteoarthritis in older people and the elderly is usually down to wear and tear of joints that naturally occurs with age.” How does osteoarthritis affect young people differently? Early onset osteoarthritis can affect a young person’s ability to carry out their job or perform their favourite exercise. Older people will still be affected in the same way, but perhaps they might be retired and less keen on intense exercise or professional level sports. “In especially young people, such as teenagers, osteoarthritis can affect mental wellbeing too” explains Dr Porter. “This is a time when there’s a pressure to ‘fit in’ and be like everybody else. If osteoarthritis means teens can’t do the same sports or have the same social life as others, then they may feel left out and socially isolated.” Osteoarthritis in young people can also have an impact on education. If time is needed off school to attend appointments, have surgeries or to deal with pain, then they could be at a disadvantage
when it comes to exams. Young people in their 20s and 30s can be left behind in the race for university places, jobs and careers if their school grades have been affected or they’re suffering flare ups preventing them from achieving what they want to achieve.
THE DETAILS For more information on Dr Porter and the treatment options at King Edward VII’s Hospital, call our patient services team: 020 7467 4344, Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm www.kingedwardvii.co.uk
What are the treatment options? Although any damage to the joints cannot be reversed, the symptoms of osteoarthritis can be managed, allowing sufferers to live as normal a life as possible. Treatments for osteoarthritis include lifestyle advice, medications, orthobiologics and surgery. Dr Porter specialises in Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, a highly-personalised treatment which has been used for more than a decade in professional sports for both men and women. “PRP treatment involves the collection of a small amount of the individual patient’s own blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the red blood cells. The platelets are then injected into the area of injury to stimulate healing and regeneration. Platelets are the body’s own wound and injury healing mechanism” says Dr Porter. If you’re a young person suffering with osteoarthritis, Versus Arthritis has lots of valuable help, information and support available on their website.

If moles could talk… W
e often notice moles on our skin – some have been with us since birth while some make an appearance overnight. But what exactly are these spots and what are the key things to keep in mind? In this article we uncover – what is a mole and when to be concerned? To start of, let’s understand what a mole really is; a mole (or melanocytic naevus) is the term applied to a lesion on the skin made up of a cluster of cells called melanocytes (pigment cells).
Spot the difference Moles can differ in shapes, size and colour. Most moles are brown, but they vary from flesh coloured to brown or blue and sometimes black. Most people have moles and some people have more than others. They can affect any part of the body. Most are formed before the age of 20, but some people can develop new moles well into their 30s or beyond.
Vigilance is key The vast majority of your moles are benign (non cancerous) and never cause any trouble. However, a small number may change and have the potential to become a cancerous mole (malignant melanoma). So, if you notice any changes in your mole, be it: • the size or colour or shape • if it itches • is painful or bleeds • if new nodules develop within or around it • or it looks red and inflammed the mole should be checked by a dermatologist and removal considered.
Examining that treacherous spot If you observe changes in your mole, you need to see a dermatologist. The mole should be removed if there are concerns that a melamoma could be developing. Moles can either be: • Benign (non cancerous) – most moles are harmless • Dysplastic - these are thought to be precancerous moles that have the potential to become malignant melanomas. Although many of them will not become cancerous it important that they are closely monitored for change in size, shape, colour and symptoms such as itching or bleeding, and removal considered by a dermatologist. • Malignant melanoma – these moles have developed into a skin cancer. 1 7 8 J U LY 2 0 2 0
Early detection of melanoma is so important! Malignant melanomas (cancerous moles) have the ability to spread around the body. The earlier they are diagnosed the better. Like any other cancer it is important that people who have had malignant melanomas are treated by a multidisciplinary team of specialists which includes a dermatologist, plastic surgeon, oncologist and a skin pathologist.
Crucial check ups Some groups of people should be regularly checked for abnormal moles. These include people who have had a malignant melanoma in the past or have a family history of melanoma, people who have fair skin or red hair and those with a large number of moles (dysplastic naevus syndrome). People who have had considerable sun exposure, particularly with episodes of severe sunburn when young, or have used sunbeds, should get their moles checked regularly. Avoid use of sunbeds. Sunbed use is a high risk activity that can cause malignant melanoma. Remember prevention is always better than cure. So stop and take a look at your moles and see what your moles are trying to tell you and whether you need to get your moles checked by a dermatologist.

MARVELLOUS MARBLE
Introducing original marbled wallpaper prints made in the traditional Japanese Art of Suminagashi, meaning ‘floating ink’ The process of Suminagashi involves colours being placed on the water surface, which then begin to expand on the water. They are only encouraged to move by air, nothing else disturbs the surface. The colours move in an organic way - when a dynamic pattern has been shaped, Natascha makes a print by placing and moving the paper on the water. Each piece is unique. Colour combinations are inspired by paintings such as Klimt, Monet and Van Gogh’s Starry Night, marbled in blues, yellow and gold. Contemporary pieces are created with bolder colours including neons. www.natmaks.com

Dog, Dome & Daughter D
og & Dome was set up in Spring 2019 by Mother and Daughter duo Flora Woodruff and Catriona Hall. Catriona is an artist whose primitive, portly and folk art animals grace the walls of many homes, both in the UK and further afield. The creative process for Dog & Dome products begins with Catriona painting an original picture in her earthy palette. Flora uses her creative skills to take particular elements of the original, adding patterns to come up with newly formed artwork to specifically fit the three dimensional products. After much discussion and tweaking on Flora’s part at Catriona’s direction, the embellishment process is complete and the finished designs are sent to the manufacturer for samples and feedback before the final printing onto the products. The Dog & Dome Headquarters is based in rural Derbyshire, in the Peak District National Park, which provides inspiration for the designs. Flora and Catriona were adamant that their products must be British made and were lucky to able to tap into
1 8 4 J U LY 2 0 2 0
the expertise of the area’s longstanding cotton and silk industries. As a result, they are able to source the materials for their goods within a 40-mile radius and are proud to support local British businesses. They liaise directly with these local suppliers and build relationships with them to ensure the best quality products. Dog & Dome believe in using ethically sourced, sustainable materials; their paper products are produced from recycled paper and their packaging, where possible, is eco-friendly to have as little adverse effect on the environment as possible. Organic cotton is used for many of their products and as colour is so important to the finished result, they choose the process of screen printing for most of their products, meaning they are hand printed as well as hand made. Dog & Dome produce quirky, fun and quintessentially British products that appeal to all ages with many products to choose from, including kitchenware, homeware and stationery and offers gift ideas and bundles for those who want a helping hand when it comes to choosing. They aim to enhance homes with unique, quintessentially British products which add charm and colour to any household. www.doganddome.com

aving spent so much time in lockdown in your home, whether you want to ‘kiss your kitchen’ because it’s done you proud or ‘kiss your kitchen goodbye’ and can’t wait to see the back of it, the chances are that there’s something you want to change! They say that the kitchen is the heart of the home, and over the past few weeks this sentiment has most definitely been proved true! Not just a practical room where meals are prepared and often served, it’s become the real hub of the home. From home schooling and a ‘hot desk’ office space to stay-at-home dinner parties, the kitchen has become the soul of the home as well as the heart. With kitchens to suit all budgets, Ray Munn’s most popular kitchens are supplied by the Arredo 3 and Davonport brands. Our British Bespoke partner is Davonport. Based in Colchester they have been manufacturing bespoke handmade kitchens for over 20 years in both classic and modern styles. We love the new “Shoreditch” range seen here with its nod to

ORCHIDS
KEEP YOUR BLOOMING THROUGH SUMMER
Expert Mark Riley shares five hacks to stop your orchids from overheating.
S
truggling to stop your orchids from wilting? Direct sunlight and high temperatures can wreak havoc on our most popular indoor plant, and so a major orchid grower is advising flower fans to make some simple changes to their normal plant-care routine. Millions of phalaenopsis orchids, commonly known as moth orchids, are sold every year and normally require minimum upkeep, until summer temperatures can result in flopping flowers. But there are easy solutions. “Growing orchids in the summer heat is really easy as long as you make some simple tweaks,” says Mark Riley, an expert from specialist Love Orchids (loveorchids.co.uk). “Extra water, some plant food and a position away from direct sun is key. Orchids look beautiful, can flower for months and last for years. And there’s an orchid for everyone’s tastes.” Some hacks can be followed all year round. Don’t, for instance, leave your orchid next to your fruit bowl, as they’re sensitive to ethylene gas, which can be produced by ripening fruit. If you leave your orchid too close to your fruit, its flowers may drop. Other methods work well in summer. Riley offers five further hacks to keep plants blooming for weeks in the warmer weather...
Water twice a week instead of once “Orchids normally only need a weekly water, but in high temperatures, this should be increased. Run your orchid under a tap or let it soak in the sink for a few minutes. Well-watered roots have plump green roots. If they look silvery grey or shrivelled, pop the plant under the tap.” 1 9 4 J U LY 2 0 2 0
Use the ice cube trick “Add a few ice cubes to the surface of the bark instead of watering, avoiding the leaves. They will gradually melt and provide the required hydration. Make sure any surplus water is removed from beneath the orchid within an hour, as orchids don’t like sitting in water.”
Grab some gravel and give misting a miss “Orchids originate from warm, tropical Asia and prefer humid conditions, rather than dry. Increase humidity for your orchid by placing the pot on a layer of wet gravel, keeping the water level below the top of the stones. “Avoid using a water ‘mister’ as this can lead to spotting on the flowers and deposits on the leaves, as many water supplies are ‘hard’, containing limescale.”
Add feed “Orchids grow more actively during the summer, so add fertiliser to the water fortnightly. Their nutritional requirements are very minimal so only use orchid-specific ‘food’ and never exceed the recommended dose. During cooler weather, orchids can happily survive on water without additional feed.”
Don’t let it shine “Orchids love a bright window, but they’re not keen on direct sunlight, particularly in hot, dry weather. They also don’t like radiators. East or west-facing windows and bathrooms are best. “While some houseplants can be placed outside in summer, orchids are best grown inside. If you desperately want to put them outside, avoid bright sunlight and bring them inside if night temperatures are likely to dip to lower than 10C,” Riley advises.
“Orchids normally only need a weekly water, but in high temperatures, this should be increased. Run your orchid under a tap or let it soak in the sink for a few minutes”

The close-knit team at Conquest, like so many other businesses, have had to adapt and respond to the pandemic. The Conquest team have been adjusting their service with showroom visits by appointment, design consultations by video link and strict social distancing during manufacture and fitting so they are able to continue to offer a personal and excellent customer experience.
A Bespoke Renaissance The pandemic has not only made us rethink our work practises but our buying behaviour, our homes and our impact on the environment. Could it perhaps have added a sense of belief in our ability to bring about dramatic change - a belief that change on a global scale is possible? Conquest’s founder and inspiration John Adey, who recently celebrated his 78th birthday certainly thinks so. “A bespoke approach to furniture was already experiencing a renaissance as more people discovered the value of sustainable furniture and design without limitations. The pandemic has been a global shock and a wake up call in so many ways,
telling us now is the time to act and become more sustainable in our buying practices.”
Conquer Working From Home We’ve all had to spend a lot more time working from home and Conquest’s designers know that it is possible to be much more productive with a home office that perfectly fits your needs. Beautifully, intelligently designed fitted home office furniture, including desks, shelving, drawers, cabinets and display space should all combine perfectly to create a comfortable refuge for action, reflection and creative thinking.
Dress in Style A handcrafted fitted dressing room is perhaps one of life’s luxuries but a tailored dressing area in your bedroom can serve equally well. A bespoke approach means that your dressing room or dressing area is designed to complement your home. It will provide the perfect storage solution for your clothes, shoes and accessories, meaning you will always look and feel your best.

SIMPLE
WAYS TO FENG SHUI
Finding calm and positive energy at home has never felt more important, says
a connection with nature,” says Rosheen Forbes, commercial activity & events leader at IKEA UK & Ireland. “Adding plants and greenery is an easy place to start, and depending on the ‘bagua’ (centre of energy), the colours you choose can increase the energy in certain areas. Calculating your bagua map is simple but needs approaching differently depending on your home,” Forbes adds. “If you live in an apartment, align the bottom of the bagua map with the front entrance wall. If you live in a house, use a compass and place the ‘career area’ (bottom middle on the bagua map) where your compass indicates the north. “So, when planning your garden, think about planting blue and purple flowers in your ‘wealth corner’ (south east), and pink, white and red flowers in the ‘relationship corner’ (south west) to increase the energy around love and partnerships. “Furthermore, outdoor mirrors can be used to attract abundance. With its curved shape and smooth flowing lines, an oval mirror can be used to reflect the light from the sun, making the space feel bigger and brighter. For smaller spaces, place two mirrors to face each other so the light bounces off, creating beautiful brightness.” Fancy giving your home some Feng Shui magic? ith a growing focus on finding comfort at home and turning our living spaces into calming sanctuaries, this year has reignited our interest in Feng Shui. The ancient Chinese practice is all about creating harmony in a space - but goes far beyond using colour and light to create the right ambience, for instance. Strategically placing furniture to promote wellness, using artwork and living plants to get the right vibes and keeping rooms clear of clutter all factor. Based on the belief there’s a continuous flow of ‘chi’ - or energy - between an individual and their surroundings, thinking about how to arrange our objects to promote good work-life balance has additional appeal right now, with so many more of us adapting to life without a commute. There’s plenty of scope for Feng Shui to feature in gardens and patios too, for an extra boost when you throw open the doors or look out the window. “The practice of Feng Shui aims to strike a balance between the self and the natural world. “The ancient Chinese practice is all about creating harmony in a space”
“When introducing the tools of Feng Shui into the home you need to think about adding balance and drawing energy into the room,” says Wil Law, home design stylist for John Lewis. “You can start with colours - using muted tones mixed with natural materials and soft furnishing accessories immediately creates a calming effect. Try a natural wooden armchair (like our Croft Collection Frome Leather Armchair, £899, John Lewis), with muted colours on the walls and textured vases and ornaments with a soft rug or carpet underfoot,” says Law.
Keep colours positive if you’re not into neutral Of course, colour is subjective, and what’s positive and calming to one person may be undesirable to

another. Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper, suggests using colours that reflect your personal happiness - but try to avoid darker colours or too much black, as these can sap positive energy flows throughout the home. “Brighter colours will have an immediately uplifting effect, so this may be the perfect opportunity to create a feature wall. You might even want to go so far as using your ‘commanding position’ (the spot furthest from the door and not in direct line with it) wall as the accent - and earn yourself double Feng-Shui points while you’re at it.” If you’re not sure where to start, check out I Want Wallpaper’s Erismann Paradiso Tropical Leaves Pattern Wallpaper in Jungle Leaf Forest, £12.99 per roll. In Feng Shui, green is the colour of renewal, fresh energy and new beginnings and is believed to help relieve stress. If going green with walls isn’t possible, Whitecroft says to look for accessories to enhance good energy. Living plants, brightly coloured cushions or a wall decoration will brighten a room and tie the look together in one fell swoop.
and bobs will maximise your desk area, while taking up less room - and they can be rolled away when it’s time to log off. Ikea’s FJALLBO Laptop Table, £55, ticks all the right boxes - and can even double up as a drinks trolley in the garden.
Aim for minimal clutter
Try to separate work and relaxation Another key Feng Shui tip is to keep your work space separate from your relaxation area, to help balance your work and home life and enable you to properly ‘switch off ’ while working from home. Out of sight, out of mind can only be a positive move on many levels - signalling when it’s time to end those video conferencing calls, light a candle and chill out. And just in case you’re wondering, candles should be placed in the bagua of your home - as well as releasing daily stress, their glow brings fiery energy and will keep the ‘chi’ harmonious and happy. But back to the business of a work station: slim, movable tables, deep enough for a laptop and bits

“If you’re short on outdoor space, stress not. Think about bringing the outside in with some greenery”
The starting point for any positive environment is to keep kitchen work surfaces and table tops as clear as possible. This might mean having a good sortout, and investing in some suitable storage solutions. “Old magazines, dusty ornaments and general brica-brac once placed in haste and never removed will not contribute to a positive energy environment,” says Whitecroft. “If you find it hard to part with sentimental clutter, find a box to neatly pack it away. Do be cautious though - simply moving clutter from one spot to another won’t do much to aide your energy flow. Donate to charity shops or find a way to bid farewell to items in order to clear your space, and ultimately, your mind.”
Bring the outside in If you’re short on outdoor space, stress not. Think about bringing the outside in with some greenery. “Plants are a brilliant way to bring energy into the room, add colour and cleanse the air. They look great in natural baskets or ceramic vases and succulents are easy to care for,” says Law Last but not least, another important Feng Shui tool to build a soothing environment is to consider carved furniture with smooth edges, over angular and sharp designs. Sharp edges and corners, otherwise known as bad energy ‘sha’, could have a negative effect when you’re unwinding - and right now it’s all about maximising the feel-good factor where we can and letting positive vibes flow!

Blue Room: PANTONE’S 2020 COLOUR OF THE YEAR We’ve found 10 ways to give your home a beautiful blue injection, to take it from dull to dazzling in 2020 and beyond... words: Gabrielle FagaN Splash out on a statement seat “The popularity of blue is down to its versatility. Blues are easy to live with and simple to pair with other colours,” says Charlie Marshall, founder of furniture company, Loaf. “Plus they don’t really ever go out of style, unlike some bolder, fleeting of-the-moment shades. “If you want to make a real statement, then a sofa or love seat in a blue fabric will add real wow-factor to a sitting room.” If you’re baffled by blues and its many hues, Marshall advises checking out blue interiors on Pinterest and Instagram. “It will help inspire you and show you how the colour works,” he adds. “Experiment first, before you invest in a large item, by updating inexpensive, smaller accessories like cushions and throws, or introducing an artwork that features a blue palette.”
Take flight with blue “Classic Blue is a strong, honest colour that gives you a feeling of being anchored when you look at it,” declares Anna Jacobs, one of many designers inspired by this year’s blue palette. “There’s nothing frivolous about blue,” she adds. “This timeless colour will outlast through multiple trends. It also makes a fantastic base colour for many colour schemes, as it will support and enhance bright colours, while enlivening neutrals.”
Go grand with majestic blue Bold decorative designs in rich dark blues will add a touch of grandeur that could turn your home into a little palace. “Although it may be considered a bold choice for walls, Classic Blue is surprisingly versatile,” points out Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper. “It can be styled in many ways to achieve different looks. Deeper shades of blue can look regal, so add a splash of opulence to your living space with a quirky feature wall, such as one papered with a Rasch Portfolio Peacock Print.” Alternatively, for a contemporary vibe, he advises geometric prints with metallic detailing.
Think blue & take two Splashing out on the home may not be on the agenda - but you can easily add a fashionable dash of blue by styling up with a couple of affordable accessories. Give a sofa a smart, new look with a cosy throw, and invest in that most useful of occasional seats - a plush pouffe.
Dream in blue Colour blocking is another chic way to introduce Classic Blue while creating visual interest, enthuses Rebecca Snowden, interiors style adviser, Furniture Choice. “Painting a blue band on the lower half of a wall, and having the upper half ivory or white, is super effective” she says. “Take the colour up to less than half the height of the room and paint the larger proportion in ivory or white. This will 2 0 8 J U LY 2 0 2 0

make the wall appear higher and is ideal for making smaller, low-ceiling rooms look airy and more spacious.” Blues are perfect for rocking a coastal vibe, she points out. To channel this look, Snowden suggests pairing the shade with light wood and natural materials like rattan or jute, and completing the effect with sea-inspired artwork.
Feast on blue A deep blue tone brings a summer vibe to any room, which is calming, relaxing and ideal for an eating area. Combine fresh white and blue with a pared-back contemporary interior, free of clutter, and let the colour sing in the space.
Transform a tabletop A successful table setting is one which is a visual feast for the eyes, but doesn’t compete or clash with colourful food, allowing the meal to star. Serve up delicious shades of cool blue in tableware and contrast with a pure white tablecloth, or for a more rustic feel, display on a richly grained wooden table.
Guarantee a blue skies outlook Add drama and luxury to a room by dressing windows with new curtains in a deep blue shade, reminiscent of velvety blue skies. “It’s amazing how blue can transform a home, and a sophisticated, deep, dark blue for curtains and Roman blinds will not only be dramatic and striking but will ramp up a feeling of cossetting comfort,” says Susan White, group marketing director for blinds and shutters specialists, Hillarys. Their Onyx Magma curtain and Roman blind range, in a blue-toned marble effect print, starts from £276, Hillarys.
Make an open & shut case
“Brightly coloured shutters make for a fantastic alternative to a feature wall,” says Chrissie Harper, customer experience manager at California Shutters. “Full height or solid shutters work particularly well painted in a bold shade, instantly creating a major statement. Classic Blue is striking but not anchored to a season, so the shade will make your home feel cosy during the colder months but bright and open when days are lighter and longer,” she adds. The company has a colour-matching service, which gives you the option to match your shutters to your wall so you can achieve an impressive all-over look for a room.
Quick step into blues Interior designers always plan the floor before the walls, because they know the impact it can have on a space. Carpet or flooring in a deep, rich hue could lead your scheme and make your wall colour choice easy, as it should merely complement the floor. “Carefully considered flooring is the perfect way to introduce blue in a subtle yet stylish way,” says Anna Del-Molino, buyer at Carpetright. “Using a deep shade of blue on floors, curtains and walls adds depth and interest to a space. To keep the shade from overwhelming your room, complement with pops of softer colours, such as dusky pink, grey, or rich oranges, and reflect the light with gleaming metallics.” 2 1 0 J U LY 2 0 2 0

Tales of Morocco Warm tones can enhance a chilled-out vibe at home, says Sam Wylie-Harris
T
hese are challenging times for style hunters, especially if you’re in need of a far-flung fix and long to be somewhere else. In the new normal, souvenirs from souks, textiles and prints that draw on a mix of cultural influences, and decorative trimmings that reflect our eclectic tastes, feel as out of reach as a Moroccan riad - and wafting down a mosaic-tiled courtyard in a beaded kaftan. But while we’re social distancing, would-be globetrotters and those loving lockdown are perfectly placed to spice things up at home with warm tones of terracotta, a gleam of gold, and rich fabrics to capture a timeless, laid-back look inspired by the past, as we look forward to the future. Here’s how to introduce some sun-drenched stylish updates... “As spring creeps into summer, add touches of warmth to your scheme with terracotta reds, soft pinks and hints of gold,” says Emily Dunstan, home buyer at Heal’s. “Drawing inspiration from
the outdoors will create a comforting environment that’s gentle on the eye, perfect for a relaxing lounge area or bedroom; while blending rich, earthy tones with refined elements of brass and gold will evoke an exotic feel, bringing a sense of holiday heat into your home.”
It’s all in the detail
“Dunstan suggests weaving earthen tones into your existing palette with soft furnishings”
2 2 0 J U LY 2 0 2 0
Dunstan suggests weaving earthen tones into your existing palette with soft furnishings, such as their Linie Design’s Monu Rug in rose. “Its elegant, abstract motif will add interest, whilst subtle golden detailing will catch the light and create a subtle shimmer.” For smaller finishing touches, try introducing a distinctive pattern, such as those seen on this Stones Cushion, which combines rich gold with an eyecatching print, to add a hint of nomadic luxe. And to mirror the ornate carved detailing and handmade pieces you might see in a souk, Amara’s version looks as authentic as one you might be tempted to try and stuff in your suitcase. To make a larger statement, a patterned sofa in warm hues will create a focal point within the room: “This season, One Nine Eight Five (Heal’s design studio) took inspiration from the curves of our Wallis sofa, creating an abstract design that echoes the shades of spring. Featuring deep red and orange brush strokes alongside nude shades,
this bold upholstery also includes a velvet ochre backing, drawing the eye from every angle,” explains Dunstan.
Beige and browns blend effortlessly together Bold without being overpowering, shades of spice, rust and terracotta are design staples that lend themselves to a multitude of decors, from Scandi to mid-century,” says Suzy McMahon, buying director for Sofology. “These are colours that work best when chosen to complement, rather than clash. Keep walls and furniture tonal and embrace the richness that comes from reddish oranges and rusty browns.” For a truly impactful scheme, she recommends pairing accents of saturated tones of green, black and navy. And you can enhance the look with darker metallics, such as gold and bronze, rather than silver or chrome. “Furnishing your space with upholstery in one of these versatile spiced hues will create a warm and cosy feel,” says McMahon, and the choice of material will really set the tone here. “Selecting a velvet will create an opulent, luxurious finish, whereas a linen or cotton will bring a sophisticated
yet relaxed atmosphere. Layer with throws and scatter cushions in similar shades and tactile textures, to bring added comfort and depth to your scheme.”
Make the switch to decorative lighting As Claire Hornby, head of creative at Barker & Stonehouse points out, lighting is an integral part of any Moroccan-inspired interior. As well as floor-standing lanterns with an artisan feel, and the flattering soft glow of candles, an array of rattan pendants hung at various heights will offer a nod to bazaar style, without compromising the calm vibe of the space.
Warm golds radiate warmth A cool palette of grey and deepest charcoal, backed by a wall painted in gold or mustard, offers an earthy contrast and works brilliantly in an entrance hall or fireplace surround. Team with monochrome travel prints for a glowing getaway feeling. “Terracotta and rust are colours found in nature and offer a connection to the outside world, creating a sense of calm,” says Helen Shaw, director of Benjamin Moore UK. “Incorporating rich, bold spice colours creates instant character, taking a small space from sterile to stylish.” And if you really want to luxe it up, what could be more wondrous on the wall than metallic feather wallpaper? “We may not be able to go on fabulous holidays right now, but that doesn’t stop us taking inspiration from the stunning aesthetics of Moroccan interiors,” says Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper. “The use of spicy, warm tones and pops of gold can bring a much needed heat, and create a sense of the exotic in any room. Try a splash of cobalt blue to really bring a room to life - as inspired by the incredible Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech.”

“This means it always stays fresh because it’s constantly evolving to take into account our changing tastes. Currently, the trend is for a fresh, sharp, more pared-back look, still using the traditional blue and white palette and stripe designs but more pin-stripe than deckchair. “Punchy injections of red are must. My advice would be to keep a scheme simple and edit ruthlessly, so it’s more sophisticated than sea-shanty.” Reflecting our concern for the environment and our oceans, designers are focusing on sea creatures and marine life in designs, often botanical in their detail, she points out. Featuring these in accessories will give a modern twist to a scheme. A few details may be all that’s needed for an injection of sail-away style. Display a beautiful shell, an antique ship’s lantern, a painted wooden boat or carvings of fish or sea birds. Perhaps you’ve got a special collection of beach treasures collected during holidays by the sea. Place these on shelves or in a dish on a sideboard.

Faux or real palms and foliage are in harmony with our desire for bringing the outdoors in and they have a lovely, lush, exotic feel. These will also work to soften dark textures and sharp outlines, to give a rounded balanced feel to a room.” As a final flourish, she suggests: “Add an instant bold, glamorous interiors update.” 2 2 6 J U LY 2 0 2 0

If you’re a fan of laid-back living, you’ll love a cool style which balances effortless understatement with dashes of the Golden State’s trendy Venice Beach chic. “When it comes to colour, sunshine brights are the perfect choice to recreate that chilled-out holiday feeling at home,” says Lauren Harris, senior designer at DFS. Zingy shades create a playful, uplifting mood and paired with contemporary design, such as a bold yellow sofa, are a great way to bring a space to life. Patterned footstools are another way to add extra colour, pattern and personality,” she adds. “Key into a colour palette of terracotta, yellow and coral - shades which will naturally bring a zest and sense of energy to a room.” Pair bright yellow furniture with a neutral background, Harris suggests, and then introduce pops of colour and pattern with cushions and bright, bold art, to create contrast without overwhelming a room. Finally, she says, this is a too-cool-to-care aesthetic so feel free to experiment with quirky, flamboyant touches - they’ll only add to the charm.
