DIGITAL TOUR LAUNCHES AT WEST HORSLEY PLACE
Anew digital tour launching at West Horsley Place this week will give visitors a unique opportunity to discover more about the fascinating history of the Grade I listed Manor House.
The tour, which will be available from Sunday 20 November on the free app Smartify – for visitors to West Horsley Place along with virtual visitors from around the world - features the recollections of people from the local community who knew Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe (19152014), the last private owner of West Horsley Place.
From Gordon Bufton, who lived in the house as a boy in the ‘50s and ‘60s when his parents worked for Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe, to Ian Wright, then manager of Squire’s Garden Centre, whose dog was a favourite of the Duchess, the new tour brings to life the recent past of West Horsley Place.
It is the culmination of Our Stories, an intergenerational community project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund that brought together young people aged 15-18 to interview older people about their memories of West Horsley Place, Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe and the village of West Horsley to create an oral history. 14 young people took part in the project, learning about their local history and gaining new skills, and 29 older people, who shared their stories and were able to create new connections. The full interviews will be held by Surrey History Centre and will be available as a resource for future generations.
Our Stories was devised by West Horsley Place Trust to combat loneliness and to improve wellbeing as part of a wider two-year programme of public consultation and activity supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund that is, for the first time, enabling a wide range of people from the local community to experience how heritage spaces can transform health and wellbeing.
Commenting, Ilona Harris, Director of West Horsley Place Trust, said: “We’re delighted to be launching this new tour here at West Horsley Place. It’s the perfect way to capture people’s stories and memories, and it has been a pleasure to bring all ages together with this project. Visitors
to our Open Days will be able to enjoy this audio tour as they explore our ancient Manor House and, for the first time, we can welcome virtual visitors from anywhere in the world. I’m so looking forward to seeing people experiencing the house in a new way as they listen to Our Stories.”
Ian Wright, who participated in the project, said: “It was a huge privilege for me to have been invited to participate in the West Horsley Place oral history project as it had a been a huge privilege for me to have known the Duchess and welcomed so many times in to her wonderful home.”
“The Duchess was a unique character full of fascinating stories which she gladly and willingly shared with me. She and her family had lived through, experienced and been part of so much of the history of the 19th and 20th century. We became firm friends and I used to relish my weekly visits to the house. Every visit filled me with wonder as she recounted her life stories to me. Those years are fondly remembered as some of the best years of my life and I have been glad to record the memories of a person the likes of which we won’t see again.”
Our Stories will are available on Smartify now by searching West Horsley Place.

Paddington at the Palace
Paddington Bears have been photographed around royal residences ahead of the Queen Consort donating more than 1,000 teddies to the Barnardo’s children’s charity.
Camilla attended a special teddy bears’ picnic at Bow Nursery, which is run by the charity, and she personally delivered the Paddingtons and other cuddly toys that were left at royal residences as tributes to the Queen following her death in September, to Barnardo’s children’s services.
The teddies had been left by members of the public outside Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
The Royal Parks, Buckingham Palace and Barnardo’s released a video documenting the bears’ journeys alongside photos of different Paddingtons enjoying their stay at Buckingham Palace and Clarence House.
One shot shows a bear sliding down the bannister of an ornate staircase while another pictures a bear picking out a Paddington book from a shelf full of books.
Paddington film cast members Hugh Bonneville and Madeleine Harris, and Paddington author Michael Bond’s daughter Karen Jankel for whom he wrote the original stories, also attended the picnic.
It comes after Camilla was pictured surrounded by teddies in a photo taken on October 13 to mark the 64th anniversary of the publication of the first Paddington Bear book.
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee sketch in the summer saw the Peruvian bear visit Buckingham Palace for afternoon tea, during which the Queen produced a marmalade sandwich from her handbag.
It prompted mourners to leave teddy bears
and even some marmalade sandwiches among the floral tributes which amassed outside royal residences following her death.
In 2016, the Queen passed the patronage of Barnardo’s to Camilla, who was then the Duchess of Cornwall.
Barnardo’s chief executive Lynn Perry said: “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was Barnardo’s patron for over 30 years, and we are honoured to be able to give homes to the teddies that people left in her memory.
“We promise to look after these bears which will be well-loved and bring joy to the children we support.
“We are incredibly grateful to Her Majesty The Queen Consort for her support in helping us to raise awareness of the needs of vulnerable children and young people in the UK so that we can continue to support them through our vital services.”
Tom Jarvis, director of parks at the Royal Parks charity, said: “Over the last few weeks we have been looking for a fitting and appropriate use for the hundreds of teddy bears that were left in Green Park and Hyde Park to honour the Queen.
“We are delighted that the teddy bears will now bring joy and comfort to hundreds of children supported by Barnardo’s.”
Buckingham Palace said the teddies were being “well looked after” at the palace, Clarence House and in the Royal Parks nursery in Hyde Park.

SINGING IS BACK!
GARETH MALONE UK TOUR
Guildford Thursday 15th December G LIVE
Singing is back! During the pandemic, singing was as good as banned and we were all silenced! But now the time has come to lift our voices once more as Gareth Malone brings his new tour, ‘Sing-AlongA-Gareth!’ to venues across the UK this autumn.
Join Gareth for this heart-warming show, together with his band, four stellar singers and a choir, local to each venue he will visit. Kicking off on 26 October at The Lowry in Salford, the show will then tour around the UK before culminating on 16 December at the Poole Lighthouse. Tickets go on-sale at 9.00am on Friday 8 July from garethmalone.com
Audiences will get to enjoy an evening of songs that Gareth has sung on TV over the last 15 years, and many of the tracks that were performed by him along with the hugely successful ‘Great British Home Chorus’ - which saw thousands of people around the country sing with Gareth from their kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms during the pandemic, including:
• I’m Still Standing – Elton John
• Walking On Sunshine – Katrina and the Waves
• Ordinary World - Duran Duran
• Somewhere Only We Know - Keane
• Stand By Me - Ben E. King
• Wake Me Up – Avicii
• Bridge Over Troubled Water – Simon & Garfunkel
• Fields Of Gold – Sting
• Along with a unique medley of party songs created by Gareth!
Playing piano, guitar and bass, Gareth will keep everyone entertained throughout the show as he creates songs on the spot and helps the audience to write their own songs, discovering some hidden talent along the way. This is a feel-good evening of upbeat fun tracks we all know and love, which everyone can easily sing-along too. And you’ll be able to download the song list in advance to practice. Whether you are coming with a choir or as sing-along solo, all are welcome to join Gareth in this celebration of community and song.
Gareth Malone said: “I cannot wait to get out on the road and sing with people this autumn. Wherever I go, people are so excited about being able to listen to live music and to enjoy singing once again. This is going to feel like a real party.” glive.co.uk

CHRISTMAS GUIDE

– Everything you need for this festive season –
CHRISTMAS GIFTING WITH THE GORDON RAMSAY ACADEMY
WE ASKED THE CHEFS AT THE ACADEMY FOR THEIR TOP CHRISTMAS TIPS…
How do you get really crispy roast potatoes?
Chef Bea: I always give my potatoes a really good shake in a colander to fluff up the edges after they’ve been parboiled. This will give you more surface area to crisp up in the hot oil.
What’s an easy way to add flavour to root veg?
This year, we think gifting should be about making memories, so why not make them extra delicious with a gift voucher or cooking class for the Gordon Ramsay Academy. This first-ever cookery school from Gordon Ramsay is conveniently located in Surrey (just a quick train ride from London and Southern England), and makes a failsafe option for foodie friends, adventurous family members, or anyone who just loves to learn new skills.
With an enormous range of classes to choose from, from Taste of India to Next Level Baking and Ultimate Fish and Seafood (not to mention Gordon’s signature Beef Wellington) there are dozens of classes suited to people of all ages, interests, and levels of experience. You don’t need to be an expert chef already to give it a go!
What’s more, you can get the whole family involved. If you know a budding young cook then get them whipping up a storm with Junior Chef classes and family Cook Together classes – that’s weekend and school holiday activities sorted. Not local? No problem. Join the chefs for an online class as you cook along together from the comfort of your own kitchen.
There are lots of gift voucher options designed in a way to make gifting as simple as possible. You can buy vouchers from £10 to use towards any class or pick specific classes you think they’ll love. Vouchers can be emailed straight to your inbox, or add a lovely presentation wallet and they’ll post the voucher out to you ready to wrap up under the tree. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get cooking!
Chef Rob: You can’t go wrong with honey and mustard for carrots, parsnips, swede, turnips, celeriac and more. Mix a heaped spoonful of each together and drizzle over the hot veg as soon as it comes out of the oven.
Any new twists you’ll be trying this year?
Chef Andrew: Cardamom is one of my favourite spices so I’m going to add a few crushed cardamom pods to my cranberry sauce this year to add a subtle spice – just remember to remove them before serving!
What would you suggest for a showstopper dessert?
Chef Sally: The Lemon meringue cheesecake recipe from our Next level baking class is always a hit with my friends and family – it looks amazing and can all be prepared in advance so you can just wow your guests by toasting the meringue to serve.

36 DECEMBER 2022 CHRISTMAS GUIDE
Let Princess Alice Hospice recycle your Christmas tree!
Rianna Davies, Partnerships Fundraiser said: “We started the collection service last year which resulted in the collection of 753 trees, raising a fantastic £11,600 for the Hospice. This year, we hope to smash our target of 1,000 trees. “As well as it being an amazing, hassle-free way to support our vital care for patients and their families, you’ll be doing your bit for the environment as every tree is chipped and recycled – and the best part is, you don’t even have to leave your home! Just pop it out the front of your property, and we’ll collect it.”
A small act of kindness can go a long way:
• £17 could pay for a Dovetail session for one child following the death of a parent.
• £28 could cover two hours of support from a physiotherapist.
• £36 could cover the cost of an hour’s care for a patient in our In-Patient Unit this Christmas.
• £81 could enable a Princess Alice Nurse to visit a patient at home over the festive season.
• £215 could pay for a year’s worth of monthly Dovetail sessions for one bereaved child.
• £432 could pay for 12 hours of compassionate care for one patient in our In-Patient Unit this Christmas.
THE DETAILS
To register please visit pah.org.uk/events/ christmas-tree-collection.
We’re also looking for volunteers to help us support this service. If you have a van and are feeling strong, we’d love you to take part in this tree-mendous event. Please contact us at events@pah.org.uk.
What will you do with your real Christmas tree in the New Year? How will you dispose of it? If you’re stuck on how to answer these questions, Princess Alice is offering residents the chance to sustainably dispose of their Christmas tree in exchange for a donation.
If you live in KT8, KT7, KT10, KT11, KT12 or KT13, you can take advantage of our Christmas tree collection service; donations will help to raise crucial funds to allow the Hospice to continue to provide free compassionate end of life care within our local communities.
You can register online, make your donation and have your tree ready for collection on Friday 6 January, Saturday 7 January or Sunday 8 January 2023, and they will do the rest.

Award Winning Patisserie & Chocolaterie
We talk to Chris Bachmann from Bachmann’s Patisserie
Why is Christmas special at Bachmanns?
I think it comes down to our products- we make such a variety of Christmas specialities that everyone who comes through the doors can find something special they like to give as a gift or treat themselves. Over the years we have built up an ever growing long fan base of a “Bachmanns Christmas”. Our regular customers always make a trip in December to see what my team have created, and the shop is always busy during Advent, when we the shops look so festive.
What sells best at Christmas?
That’s a difficult one! It changes from year to year if I’m honest. We make Stollen, Christmas Puddings, Christmas Cakes, Mince Pies, Christmas Petits fours, and a bewildering array of Chocolate Christmas products. If I had to pick out favourites, it would be difficult to be honest, but our Prune and Cognac Tart was previously named as the best Christmas Cake or dessert in the UK, and more recently, our Lebkuchen was named the best gingerbread, so I guess I’m particularly proud of those. A few years ago we won a national Design

award for our Chocolate Christmas pudding- it’s a bit like an Easter Egg in concept , with crunchy almond chocolates inside, and I always take one home for my two boys at Christmas- that’s a really fun product. Our products are only available in the month before Christmas so that makes it special, but also a challenge!
“Tell
us a little about the history of Bachmanns”
My Dad started the business with my Mum in Thames Ditton in 1989. After training in Switzerland he’d enjoyed a stellar career in confectionary including stints as the executive pastry chef at the Dorchester and The Park Lane Intercontinental, and the Chief confectioner at the Swiss centre in Leicester Square. He wanted to create the kind of local shop that they have in Switzerland; a store that covers all aspects of chocolate and confectionary, at the highest of standards. Since it has started, Bachmanns Patisserie has gone on to win over 30 national awards, so I guess you can say he achieved that.
I think that the real reason that we have been so successful over the years, and what I think sets us apart from many places, is the variety and sheer excellence of his recipes. Our products have a simplicity and clarity of flavour that is hard to match, and we do take care to never compromise on the quality of our ingredients. Across the year, we make over 450 different products, and change them through the seasons, so anyone will be able to find a favourite, and it keeps it exciting for our regular customers.
I took over the business just over ten years ago, on his retirement, but he still provides my team with inspiration and guidance- in fact he’s in Thames Ditton right now making our German Lebkuchen (gingerbread)!
A few years back we opened our second store in Weybridge, which was very exciting. It has allowed us to expand- we now have about twenty staff- and had the space to create a special separate chocolate room there, where we produce all our chocolates. The two sites both have their own pastry kitchen and they run in tandem, with each site specialising in certain areas, but all our products are hand finished every morning in both shops. It was a doubling of size and a huge investment for us. So far it has been a great success, and it’s been very satisfying – and a relief(!) to watch the business grow.

wary of leaving drinks where their animals can easily access them.
“The signs of ethanol intoxication are similar to those in humans – vomiting, depression, a lack of co-ordination, disorientation and drowsiness. Dogs with these conditions need warmth, rehydration and immediate nursing care.”
Other festive items which could cause harm to animals include plants such as mistletoe, poinsettia, holly and ivy which can all cause upset stomachs, while lilies can be very harmful to cats.
Food items which should be on the radars of pet owners include grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas, which can cause kidney failure in dogs and cats, along with macadamia nuts, onions and mouldy foods such as walnuts, bread and cheese, which can all be harmful.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth said the general business of the festive season can also cause some anxiety for pets, whose usual routines are thrown by large crowds, noise and celebrations.
Experts at a £1.4 million state-of-the art veterinary clinic in Guildford are warning pet owners to be aware of Christmas hazards which could result in an emergency trip to hospital for their animals over the festive period.
Elizabeth Wozniak, lead clinical director at Alder Veterinary Practice, which recently relocated to a new 5,000 sq ft surgery in Queen Elizabeth Park, said Christmas can present a number of potential issues for pets as homes are decorated for the season and a range of food and drink is often left lying around.
Items which present risks to pets at Christmas include ribbons on presents, tinsel, sharp tree needles, low-lying fairy lights, chestnuts and chocolate, which is often one of the most common causes for a trip to the vets.
Drink, too, can be dangerous and a traditional Christmas favourite, Baileys Irish Cream, can prove particularly dispiriting for animals.
Elizabeth said: “Christmas and the associated festivities can present a bit of a minefield for pet owners. For example, dogs will drink most forms of alcohol left in glasses, so people need to be

She added: “Christmas can often be a busy and quite chaotic time. You can help your pet cope with the chaos by keeping to their normal routine and if you are spending Christmas Day with family and your dog is going with you, take something which smells familiar to help them feel secure.
“We’d also recommend using a calming diffuser, as with fireworks celebrations.
“In terms of household hazards, while tinsel and wrapping paper might be tempting for your pet to play with, just make sure they don’t eat it!
“We want everyone to have a happy Christmas, so we recommend keeping an eye on what your pet is up to during the festivities to keep them safe and well.”

THE CONNAUGHT CHRISTMAS TREE 2022
BY ARTIST SUZY MURPHY UNVEILED IN MAYFAIR
The Connaught Christmas Tree 2022 has been unveiled, and this year has been designed by influential East Londonborn artist and sculptor Suzy Murphy, marking the start of the festive season on Mount Street in the heart of Mayfair.
The magnificent British sourced Nordmann Fir tree stands 9m tall on Carlos Place and is bedecked with 34 ‘soft white’ neon dogs. Suzy’s influence and creative direction for the tree stems from ‘Toby was a girl’, a series of sketches inspired by her childhood pet. Whimsical and poetic, with a sense of nostalgia Suzy’s interpretation of ‘Toby was a Girl’ tells the story of her dog throughout her childhood.
The Connaught tree this year, represents the timeless message of Christmas, one of hope, and peace… and light over dark. So ‘Toby’ arrives to London in Peace, and wishes everyone a truly magical Christmas.
Artist and Sculptor Suzy Murphy comments “I am so honoured to create this year’s iconic Christmas tree at The Connaught, as it is a huge part of the artistic cornerstone of Mayfair. My vision was to create a tree that symbolises my childhood experience and is closely related to a series of works I have created over the years.
‘Toby’ travelled with me artistically, in symbolic form, through various landscapes. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes dark…but here she is arriving now, triumphantly, on the Connaught Christmas tree. It is truly magical”.
This will be the seventh year The Connaught Christmas Tree has been designed by a celebrated artist, past trees include Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley, Tracey Emin, Sean Scully, Idris Khan and Annie Morris. The Connaught has long established itself as playing a significant role in the art world amassing a considerable art collection over its 170 year history.
The Connaught Christmas Tree 2022 by Suzy Murphy will shine bright until the first week of January 2023.
ABOUT THE CONNAUGHT
In the heart of Mayfair, The Connaught, part of Maybourne Hotel Group, blends contemporary style, classic English character and impeccable service to create the ultimate in sophistication. Rooms and suites to suit every mood, exquisite cuisine from Hélène Darroze and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, the charm of The Connaught and Coburg Bars, and Europe’s first Aman Spa make this the perfect place to rest, relax and dine in style.

CLARIDGE’S CHRISTMAS TREE 2022
BY SANDRA CHOI FOR JIMMY CHOO UNVEILED
into a fully immersive space, whilst also ensuring a unique and personal festive moment for every guest.
“I have always said I would love to know what it is like to step inside a diamond, and now I can! To be able to collaborate with Simon Costin on this incredible project has been an honour. The jewel has been a repeated metaphor I have used to describe Jimmy Choo, not just because they are used in our designs, but for the multifaceted nature of the collections we create as well as the reflection and light we want to bring. The power to transform and shine bright.” said Sandra Choi, Creative Director. “Claridge’s is a London icon. The perfect blend of glamour and decadencegreat things happen at Claridge’s. There’s a magic energy as you enter the doors that’s contagious, from the warmth of the staff to the discrete buzz of guests in the lobby. Claridge’s is a London jewel, it’s multifaceted, like the diamond that inspired our tree, like Jimmy Choo.”
The Claridge’s Christmas Tree has long symbolised the start of the festive season in the capital, drawing visitors and Londoners alike to admire its magnificent design.
Claridge’s, London’s legendary Mayfair hotel, has unveiled the Claridge’s Christmas Tree 2022, created by Sandra Choi for Jimmy Choo. This remarkable project has allowed her to expand on her fascination with the concept of the jewel, by exploring her dream of stepping inside one.
Named ‘The Diamond’, the tree is a magnificent sculptural creation standing over 5 metres tall, taking over 350 hours to construct. This extraordinary Christmas tree is crafted from 69 shining, reflective mirrors, accented with 60 meters of sparkling lights which pulse, undulate, and reflect off the multifaceted surface, and 250 individual aluminium panels.
It is finished with a giant, glittering bow topper - a nod to one of the key design themes of Jimmy Choo’s winter collection. The tree, designed in partnership with set designer Simon Costin, has been created to allow guests to stand inside to take in the magical and shining, diamond-refracted space. This experiential element means Claridge’s Christmas Tree, with its mesmerising lights and enchanting reflections, has turned the hotel lobby

The best skincare combinations for GLOWING SKIN
NIACINAMIDE AND VITAMIN C
Shah-Desai also recommends combining niacinamide and vitamin C.
She describes both as “powerful” antioxidants, saying vitamin C can have “a whitening effect on pigmentation and dark spots”, while niacinamide “enhances the prevention of pigmentation, [and] improves the whitening effect on brown spots”.
Dr Sabrina™ Perfect 360 Eye Illuminate, £90
The world of skincare is a crowded one, and it can be difficult to know what ingredients will give you the best results.
If you really want your skincare routine to work hard, it’s all about choosing the right combinations. “Combining ingredients means you can simultaneously treat and protect at the same time. This in turn can increase the effectiveness, which will then deliver greater and faster results,” explains aesthetic oculoplastic surgeon Dr Sabrina Shah-Desai (drsabrina.co.uk).
“Combining ingredients increases the effectiveness of the ingredient – certain ingredients work very well together, which gives enhanced results.”
Whether you layer individual ingredients or choose an all-in-one is up to you. However, ShahDesai urges you to make sure “the formulations are compatible and do not negate each other or irritate or aggravate skin”.
Plus, pre-formulated products have a few extra benefits. “Some people prefer products that have combined ingredients as they are easier to incorporate in a regime, do not negate each other and are sustainably packaged,” she adds. “Remember that using too many products can actually damage the moisture barrier and or cause other skin conditions (such as inflammation, redness and blemishes).”
If you’re looking to boost the effectiveness of your skincare routine, these ingredient combinations are a match made in heaven…
NIACINAMIDE AND SALICYLIC ACID
“Both of these ingredients have anti-ageing and anti-acne effects,” says Shah-Desai. GP and aesthetician Dr Ahmed El Muntasar (theaestheticsdoctor. com) also loves this combination.
“The salicylic acid, which is a chemical exfoliant, helps to get rid of any spots (whiteheads, blackheads) and gets rid of the top epidermis,” he says. “Then the niacinamide comes in and hydrates and nourishes the skin underneath, so it doesn’t get irritated.” e.l.f. SKIN Blemish Breakthrough Triple-Acid Resurfacing Serum, £14; Skin Proud Rise and Defend Kombucha Face Wash, £12.95
VITAMIN C AND VITAMIN E
If you’ve got products with vitamin C and E but you’re not layering them up, you could be missing a trick.
“When combined together, vitamin C and E enhance the effects of each other and give fantastic results,” explains Shah-Desai.
“When applied topically, vitamin C is a powerful skin booster. It improves the appearance of your skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, repairs damage done by UV rays, stabilises collagen and gives dull skin a luminous glow. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory

properties, and combats free radical damage by preventing oxidative damage to cells.”
Wild Science Lab Juice Boost Brightening Serum, £38; Cetaphil Rich Night Cream, £5.32 (was £7.99), Superdrug
RETINOL AND HYALURONIC ACID OR PEPTIDES
Retinol is a powerful ingredient beloved by beauty buffs for reducing the appearance of fine lines, but it also comes with its issues – namely, the dreaded ‘retinol uglies’, when your skin reacts negatively to the product. Potential side effects of retinol include “redness, irritation and dry skin”, says Shah-Desai.
That’s why she likes layering hers with hyaluronic acid, saying it “helps to lessen the potential side effects of retinol… Hyaluronic acid is renowned for its ability to hydrate the skin, it
helps the skin hold onto water, which hydrates the outer layers of the skin.”
To combat the potential side effects of retinol, Muntsara recommends applying a peptide on top. “Retinoids help shed off the top dead layer of the skin, and then what the peptide will do is repair the skin underneath, helping to maintain a nice, healthy skin barrier,” he says.
Dr. Brandt Triple Active Retinol Overnight Renewal Cream, £59; Lacura Multi-Peptide Moisturiser, £6.99, Aldi; Q+A Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum, £6.50, Sephora
“Retinoids help shed off the top dead layer of the skin, and then what the peptide will do is repair the skin underneath”
SPF AND VITAMIN C
Applying vitamin C before SPF in the morning is a genius idea, according to Shah-Desai, as it “will help protect the skin from UV damage and free radical damage.
“Vitamin C helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, slows down skin ageing and reduces the appearance of brown spots.” The order is important here – make sure you apply vitamin C first, “to get the best benefits of these products combined”, she says. Muntasar is also a fan of this combination, saying: “Vitamin C gives you that daytime brightness and antioxidants for a nice glow, then the SPF on top of it protects your skin. There is some research that potentially shows that a good quality vitamin C oil might make your SPF work even better.”

COAT TRENDS THAT WILL BE HUGE THIS SEASON
Wrap up in style for the colder months, says Katie Wright.
Are you excited for coat season?
After a summer that seemed to last forever (not that we’re complaining) and a mild start to autumn, there hasn’t been much call for proper puffers, parkas and trenches yet.
We haven’t been able to enjoy that cosy feeling of bundling up for a brisk day, but that’s set to change as the clocks go back and chillier weather arrives.
It’s great news for fashion lovers, because this season’s high street collections are full of cool, catwalkinspired coats ready to refresh your look.
Here are five fab trends to style with your autumn/winter wardrobe…
PINK
The undisputed colour of AW22, pink was all over the runways, and the trend got a mega boost with the emergence of ‘Barbiecore’ fashion inspired by Margot Robbie and the forthcoming Barbie movie.
A punchy pink coat is the perfect statement piece for the colder months. Keep the silhouette sleek and go for slightly softer shade for maximum dayto-night potential, or opt for a vibrant fuchsia to team with party dresses and tailored looks.
MAXI LENGTH
Along with flowing skirts and gowns, maxi coats swept down the runways at Jil Sander, Altuzarra, Acne and more. The beauty of a loose, longline coat is you can throw it over just about anything.
For an on-trend autumn look, pair with wide-leg jeans and chunky Chelsea boots.
ANIMAL PRINT
From chunky faux fur jackets to chic leopard print coats, animal motifs are everywhere this season –
not that they ever really go out of style. A leopard coat is an excellent investment piece. Easy to style with denim, leather trousers and midi skirts as well as party outfits, you’ll wear yours for years to come.
PUFFER
As seen on the Dion Lee, Dries Van Noten and Michael Kors catwalks, big coats are big news this season. Turn up the volume (and the heat) on your winter wardrobe with a longline padded jacket in a neutral hue – the perfect blend of fashion and function.
SHEARLING
More versatile than a faux fur number, a fuzzy shearling or borg coat in cream, camel or navy is a great all-rounder when temperatures drop. Whether you’re living in joggers, hoodies and trainers right now or prefer a swishy Seventies look, a teddy coat will top off your autumn/winter look perfectly.

DEMI MOORE TURNS 60:
The actor’s most iconic style moments
In a career that’s spanned five decades, Demi Moore has delivered some powerful acting performances and become a style icon thanks to memorable fashion moments both on and off-screen.
The actor – who celebrates her 60th birthday on November 11 –signed to Elite Models as a teen, before taking acting classes and landing her first movie role at the age of just 19.
She went on to become one of half of the Nineties’ most famous Hollywood power couple, alongside husband Bruce Willis (the pair later divorced), and has had her fair share of movie hits and misses.
Here are some of Moore’s most iconic fashion and beauty moments from over the years…
ST ELMO’S FIRE
In the 1985 movie St Elmo’s Fire, Moore played the party girl in a group of recent university graduates –complete with Eighties-style dresses, oodles of jewellery and voluminous, crimped hair.
While not well received by critics, the coming-of-age drama – which also starred Rob Lowe and Emilio Estevez – was a big box office success.
GHOST
Five years later, Moore landed a role in one of the biggest tearjerker films of all time, starring opposite Patrick Swayze in Ghost.
Playing artist Molly Jensen, Moore’s wardrobe consisted of boyish vests, shirts and dungarees, while her formerly long locks were chopped into a super-short crop – a look which daughter Tallulah used as inspiration for her own hair nearly 30 years later.
VANITY FAIR COVER
Wearing nothing but diamond jewellery, the seven months pregnant star was shot for the cover of Vanity Fair in 1991 by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz with the headline ‘More Demi Moore’.
Taken at the height of Moore’s fame, the controversial photo was widely parodied and discussed in the media, with some claiming it objectified the actor, while others seeing it as an empowering image.
80 DECEMBER 2022 FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY
The American beauty has given us some incredible fashion and beauty looks, says Katie Wright.
G.I. JANE
In 1997, Moore embarked on a gruelling training regime to play the first woman to undergo Navy SEAL training in Ridley Scott’s G.I. Jane.
Bulking up for the role, Moore even shaved her long hair into a buzzcut on camera.
STRIPTEASE
Courting controversy again in 1996, Moore became the highestpaid film actress in Hollywood when she starred as an FBI secretary-turned-exotic dancer in black comedy Striptease.
Donning a series of skimpy outfits – including feathered lingerie and a sparkly string bikini – Moore was praised for her raunchy dance performances, but the film was panned by critics.
“Moore became the highest-paid film actress in Hollywood when she starred as an FBI secretaryturned-exotic dancer in black comedy Striptease”
CHARLIE’S ANGELS
Moore made a return to the big screen in 2003 with Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.
Appearing opposite Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu in the action sequel, Moore memorably emerged from the sea in a tiny black bikini.
ROYAL WEDDING
Not long before the release of her bestselling memoir Inside Out, Moore surprised royal watchers in 2018 by attending the wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank.
Moore – who is said to be a close friend of Eugenie’s mother, Sarah Ferguson – looked elegant in a maroon Stella McCartney dress with matching fascinator, heels and a pouch bag by Gabriella Hearst.

Introducing SylFirm X
Ageing process and environmental factors are not kind to the skin which becomes thinner, drier with uneven tone and texture. This gives the dreaded crepey appearance, facial redness and pigmentation. Healthy skin is smooth, elastic and clear of blemishes.
There are many energy based devices which are being used to treat skin concerns.
Microneedling radiofrequency delivers energy through very fine needles which penetrate the skin at different depth allowing on controlled heating effect and stimulation of collagen remodelling resulting in rejuvenated, firmer and smoother skin.
Most people think that microneedling RF is used for skin rejuvenation and tightening as well as the reduction of scars and stretch-marks.
As a skin experts we are always looking for technology which addresses common skin concerns. SylFirm X is the world’s first and only dual-wave microneedling RF system with FDA and CE certification. It employs innovative technology founded upon the “Na” effect created by it’s inventor by Dr JongJu Na who is a dermatologist himself. The “Na effect” refers to the shape of the heat injury which is like a teardrop which maximised the thermal effect, minimises the epidermal damage and makes it much more comfortable.
SylFirm X has a continuous wave CW which non-selectively coagulates the skin resulting in tightening effect, reduction of skin laxity,
pores, wrinkles and scarring. The other pulse wave selectively targets lesions and is effective in reducing redness and pigmentation associated with conditions such as rosacea or melasma. The latter is associated with disruption of the basal membrane of the skin which SylFirm X strengthens preventing pigment getting into the deeper layers. It simultaneously targets the vascular component of melasma and is best combined with specialist skincare and a broad spectrum sunscreen.
SylFirm X can also be used for scalp rejuvenation and stimulation of hair growth as well as treatment of excessive sweating. Combined with the application of hyaluronic acid skin boosters with antioxidants or growth factors it can be used as the delivery system of vital skin nutrients eliminating the need for painful injections.
We launched SylFirm X this month and continue launch offers. To find out more contact Eternal Clinic on 01932300340 or go to eternal.clinic. To find out more contact Eternal Clinic on 01932 300340 or go to www.eternal.clinic

Not only are these blasts of refreshment a delight on sticky days, a beautifying spray can work wonders for your complexion when used in the morning or evening.

AW Interior Colour Trends ‘22
As autumn gets into full swing, the colours we’re pulled towards to build ourselves habitats that make us feel safe, cocooned and calm echo what we can see on the outside (in keeping with the vogue for the allnatural), but with a luxe twist.
With the countdown towards winter marching on, everything seems a bit more difficult. Getting used to, again, the darkness, the drizzle and the dropping temperatures. Let your home shoulder some of the wish-it-was-warmer burden and embrace what the season is offering – a palette of exquisitely rich indulgence, which brings glorious visual warmth to even the frostiest of days.
A WARM WELCOME
Sometimes it’s hard to really appreciate the beauty of autumn as the reality that summer’s gone sinks in. The glory of changing leaves on trees appreciated only for fleeting moments, curtains drawn across intense night skies, the odd splash
of sunlight rushed past in a hurry to seek shelter. These dark, rustic shades may seem a little glum when glanced at but complied into an interiors scheme the result is utterly sumptuous.
GOLDEN BROWN
From the spicy paprika, chilli and cinnamon tones speckled across exhibitions at this year’s directional Salone del Mobile furniture fair, to the reds making their way into the spotlight balanced by flashes of deepest blue, green, and golden ochres, these
“These dark, rustic shades may seem a little glum when glanced at but complied into an interiors scheme the result is utterly sumptuous”
94 DECEMBER 2022 HOME & PROPERTY
colours are the furniture equivalent of a warming mug of chocolate. Rich, luxurious, and just want you need after a wrapped-in-a-scarf walk, cold commute or snow-tipped trip.
RETRO AND RUSTIC
Translating these autumnal hues into something you want to invite indoors is all about materials. This season, we’re looking to the 1970s for inspiration as we are (re)teaming autumn’s lush colouring with similarly luscious finishes – think lashings of velvet for upholstery, and high-shine for hard pieces, the overtly decadent feel balanced by the organic, warm tones. In our collection of
designer sofas and modern chairs, the combination of earthy, natural shades and tactile fabrics says two things: dive right in and bring a blanket, while glossy tables, contemporary storage pieces and statement lights nod to alluring retro 70s glam.
WARMTH BEFORE WINTER
As standalone pieces, the burgundy, red and ochre designs make a bold statement. Sensual. Opulent. Hot hot hot. Place them in pairs and larger groups, and soon you’ll forget that such seasonal photogenic beauty comes with a fall in temperatures – you won’t even mind. Upholstered designs wrap around you, ready to share their anti-winter cosiness, while full on gloss reflects light around the room, adding a flash of energy to the space and reminding us it is ok to venture out. But definitely come back in here soon.

MB Architecture Changing Lives With Beautiful Homes
Matt Bickerton, Managing Partner of the family-owned architectural practice, and his wife Nicky, set up MB Architecture in 2012, specialising in premium detached residential properties and apartment buildings. The firm works in Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire.
“We have a fantastic team with over 70 years combined experience and have developed a reputation for our aspirational designs and expertise, seeing projects through from concept stage to completion and handover. Our clients keep coming back to us and recommending us to friends and family, saying that we produce designs that improve their quality of life.”
Their clients usually require inspiration to create fantastic family and entertaining areas, a general feeling of space, a home office for hybrid working, and importantly a building that will be economical
to run and environmentally responsible in its construction.
“As a company, sustainability is a longestablished part of our ethos whether it’s a new build project, or an extension and remodelling of an existing property.”
MB Architecture create bespoke solutions for each of their clients after taking the time to curate the brief and understand the priorities.
“Our clients get a professional service that encompasses all aspects of the building, considering external and internal appearance and performance, the types of materials, and the use of sunlight and daylight. We focus on designing enjoyable and versatile spaces.”
The impact of the pandemic has created an increased awareness of health and lifestyle balances.
“A recent trend is that with the increase in hybrid working our clients are spending more time at home and wish to enjoy spa-like sanctuaries within their home, from fitness studios to swimming pools. In addition, we have also been trying to bring more natural light into our designs, which clients love. Buildings, done well, improve the occupant’s happiness, their mental health, and their physical wellbeing.”

INDOOR SWIMMING A WORTHY INVESTMENT
When the Baker family initially approached Origin, they were interested in covering an existing outdoor pool. The family had been in discussion for some time, deciding whether or not the outdoor pool was worthy of undertaking as a project.
“We originally had an outdoor pool which was here when we bought the house, it was in a completely different position from where the indoor pool is now, away from the house and further away than was desirable. We knew we were going to stay at the house for at least another 10 years so, to us, an indoor pool was worth the investment.”
Once the Baker family had settled on the idea of an indoor swimming pool, they reached back out to Origin and the planning began. “We knew Origin did it all and after seeing some of their excellent recently completed projects, we decided
to go for it. With the original outdoor pool, we found it such a task having to ‘prepare’ it for the summer months and expensive to run as well even though we had taken the necessary precautions with a pool cover etc… With an indoor pool it’s a temperature controlled environment and the pool is protected by the building, making it instantly ready for spontaneous swims and family parties!”
THE BUDGET
The Baker family had done their research and had a strong idea of what their dream pool house would entail. Keeping in mind the budget the Baker family had put forward, it was Origin’s job to deliver a design that captured every element they wanted. As an active family, they longed for an athome gym. Origin kept this in mind and designed additional multifunctional space, separate from the swimming pool that could be used as a gym or potentially turned into an office in the future.

“Origin was great at keeping in mind the limits we had set and we loved working with a company that took our budget seriously and offered plenty of thoughtful and realistic suggestions throughout the whole process”
THE BENEFITS
“The biggest benefit of the indoor pool is definitely being able to swim all year round. It’s invaluable for us, we use the pool house every day and not just for swimming. Someone is always in the gym or relaxing in the lounge area.” In order to enhance the family’s enjoyment of their garden, Origin centralised the Baker family’s key activities. Origin chose a new area of the garden off to the side of the main house for the pool house, keeping it close enough for connectivity and in a position where you can look out over the garden vista and enjoy the space.
“We loved the idea of an indoor pool as another space for entertaining, we like to have friends and family over for dinner and BBQs in the summer. The pool house works as a social hub, it’s the space everyone congregates around!”

WHY ORIGIN?
“It was clear from the beginning Origin had earned their credentials as the indoor pool experts, our visits to completed projects confirmed this and made us feel comfortable and confident we were in safe hands. Origin consistently kept us up to date throughout the whole process, we’d have regular meetings to choose finishes which helped us make decisions quickly and move things along smoothly. We were very pleased with the quality of the products offered and the guys that came to work here during the construction process were very knowledgeable and helpful.
Origin excelled at communication throughout this process which is such an important skill for a company to master, especially when you’re entrusting them with a big project like ours. Everyone on site and in the office was approachable, we felt like we could talk to anyone and our questions would be heard. Even when it came to the snagging process, everything was sorted really promptly and to a high standard.”
“Origin know how to create something new in an existing setting and blend all the things you don’t think about like pathways, levels, views, security, and desired routes into the finished article so that it appears like it’s always been there at the end of the project – now that’s impressive”

How to create the perfect kitchen for entertaining this Christmas
“G
etting the right kitchen design for entertaining at Christmas requires forward planning to ensure your layout is perfectly placed. When thinking about key features and small details alike, it’s best to consider how you’d use the space, as this will help to inform your design.
“Remember, a kitchen is for life, not just for Christmas, so it’s important to ensure that the space meets your needs all year round, as well as during the festive season. If you’re a regular host, consider how you may like to use your kitchen for dinner parties and get-togethers throughout the year too.
Entertaining with ease
“An island unit is the perfect location to host welcome drinks and exchange presents, as it offers a hub to display perfectly crafted beverages, along with space for family and friends to mingle while you continue food preparations.
“Don’t have space for an island in your kitchen? Consider incorporating an informal seating feature, such as a seating nook. Building a small bench into the surrounding units can really maximise floorspace and positioning a small table in front can create a truly versatile feature that will prove handy throughout the year. You don’t have to forgo storage either, you can integrate clever solutions beneath the seating and surrounding

zone – a great place to hide presents in the run up to the big day, as well as clutter that you’d prefer visitors didn’t see!
“Regular hosts can also benefit from an integrated bar area or wine cooler. A central location avoids the inconvenience of guests rooting through the main fridge to locate drinks whilst you’re busy cooking or entertaining.
Preparations
“To guarantee Christmas dinner and other food preparations run smoothly, there are a range of features you can include into your design that will keep things organised and orderly. Internal storage and integrated appliances not only maximise space but keep surfaces clear from clutter too.
“Integrated carousels are excellent for convenience as they allow you to locate different utensils quickly without you having to scramble around at the back of the cupboards. Pan draws are another useful option as they provide the depth needed to store larger items whilst keeping them accessible, even amidst the busy run up to a Christmas gathering. Make the most of every inch of your cupboard space with concealed drawers, pull out wire shelves and storage baskets too.
“Smart appliances are a great option to keep timings on track, as they can be controlled through a smartphone. If you’re busy getting yourself ready or opening presents but need to pre-heat the oven, you can even do so with the click of a button.
“Discreet dishwashers also help keep a kitchen clean and tidy with minimal effort. Even for modest spaces, there are slimline options that provide a great solution.
The main event
“If your dining space is in your kitchen, a good cooker hood is an essential to remove smells and grease as you cook, so when you come to sit down for your Christmas dinner, you’re not left with lingering scents.

“Innovations such as NEFF’s clear glass downdraft extractor are fantastic for a discreet look, as they don’t obstruct your view – meaning you can continue any conversations whilst tending to the hob.
“I’d also recommend considering whether you’d benefit from a warming drawer. If you’re hosting a large group, warming plates ahead of serving can help keep food hot as you plate up.
“Pendant lighting above your dining table is a great way of adding focused illumination and make that Christmas table layout sparkle. It’s always a good idea to also think about other ambient forms of lighting to set the mood, such as plinth lighting and spotlights, for a sleek, layered look.
“Make serving Boxing Day morning coffees easy by opting for an integrated coffee machine in your kitchen design. Some machines even allow you to enter your guests’ orders on your mobile device, and the machine will even start preparing the drinks – one less thing to worry about!
After dinner celebrations
“As the evening approaches, incorporating wireless speakers around your kitchen will keep guests entertained into the night. Smart technology such as Google Hub can be used to control both music and lighting, so you can easily change the ambience from the convenience of your phone.

Huckleberry creates a unique kitchen for House of Hackney
Tucked away at the entrance to the mystical Cornish Castle of Trematon sits a small lodge house – ‘Quercus Lodge’ – an unassuming octagonal building painted in a dusky cream. Nothing on the outside suggests what you will find within: a riot of pattern and colour, layered fabrics and wallpapers that draw you into a fantasy world of flowers and foliage. Here, the kitchen feels pared back by comparison to the other rooms, with its Huckleberry freestanding kitchen furniture uniquely customised for House of Hackney.
Beginning the latest project in the renovation of their home the Castle of Trematon, owners of House of Hackney Frieda Gormley and and Javvy M Royle approached Huckleberry to design and make a kitchen for the castle’s lodge house. Huckleberry’s Matt and Claire Podesta met Frieda and Javvy and quickly bonded over their shared ethos of sustainability and love of British-made design. And so the plan for the Quercus Lodge kitchen was born.
Huckleberry’s freestanding kitchen furniture is designed primarily as stand-alone pieces which emanate balance and proportion, but at the same

time incorporate appliances, sinks and taps. It is made to look as though it could have been in the house for years, if not decades, completely comfortable in its surroundings. The family of furniture includes islands, dressers, base cabinets incorporating sinks, hobs and dishwashers, tall cupboards, plate racks and tables.
Creating kitchen furniture for this project was exciting especially incorporating the new range of House of Hackney paint and tiles. Huckleberry’s Scullery Bench has been given a House of Hackney twist including a decorative frieze, which is also used on the cooker hood, and finished off with hand turned oak acorn finials.
“Inspired by Georgian cabinetry and Arts and Crafts values, Huckleberry were the perfect people to create the kitchen for the Quercus Lodge,” says Frieda Gormley. “With sustainability at the heart of the brand, their distinctive, enduring design, quality British craftsmanship and responsibly sourced wood ensure each piece is made to last a lifetime; and the results are truly beautiful.” huckleberryhome.co.uk

RUGS WITH A LOT OF BOTTLE
Fabulous floor coverings made from recycled plastic bottles
Whilst we all want a house beautiful, furnishings that cost the earth when it comes to the natural resources, aren’t such a good look. Thankfully, Weaver Green’s latest collection of rugs and runners ticks all the boxes when it comes to style, comfort and sustainability.
Each one is made from up to 5400 recycled plastic bottles – yet amazingly, as soft to the touch as traditional alternatives.
Hand made by skilful artisan weavers, these rugs offer a super cosy toe-cossetting covering underfoot. Yet the hardwearing nature of Weaver Green’s totally recycled (and recyclable) rugs and runners make them an ideal option for areas of heavy traffic in your home.
Weaver Green’s flat woven rugs offer especially resistant protection and are great for heavy traffic zones, preventing clicks and threads from spoiling the overall aesthetic. Take the Kilim Rug collection: designed and woven to reflect the look and feel of their traditional woollen counterparts, these
authentic looking floor coverings come with all of the hard-wearing features that make Weaver Green rugs such a lasting investment in your home.
For those areas of the home requiring a cosier ambience, open-weave options provide a snuggly feeling as you pad softly on your way. All Weaver Green rugs and runners are suitable for use both outdoors and in as they are resistant to water, mould and mildew and are uninteresting to little critters!
