Journey through a colourful Costa Rican Paradise:

Kew Gardens’ Orchid Festival returns for 2022 Saturday 5 February – Sunday 6 March 2022, Princess of Wales Conservatory

K

ew Gardens’ much-loved annual orchid festival returns, taking inspiration from the rich and colourful culture of Costa Rica, where visitors can escape the UK’s winter weather and embrace the sights and sounds of this internationally recognised biodiversity haven. For 2022, the route around the Princess of Wales Conservatory will be designed to recreate the varied and verdant landscape of Costa Rica, transporting visitors through the wonders of this biodiversity hotspot, from the tropical dry forest of the north Pacific, to the rainforests of the southern coastline. Throughout their journey around the glasshouse, visitors will encounter an assortment of native animals replicated across a series of stunning horticultural displays. Monkeys, sea turtles, toads and hummingbirds- all intricately hand-crafted from plants- will burst into colourful life for the duration of the festival. The central display in the glasshouse pond will be filled with brilliant vibrant orchids and bromeliads.

THE DETAILS Entry to Orchids is included when purchasing a ticket to Kew Gardens, visitors must book separate timed entry slots for Orchids 2022. The best value tickets can be booked in advance via kew.org

18 JANUARY 2022

Kew’s focus on Costa Rica for Orchids 2022 will highlight the country’s unique position as a biodiversity hotspot, as recently recognised by the country being awarded the inaugural Protect and Restore Nature Earthshot Prize. Home to 5% of the world’s biodiversity, despite covering just 0.03% of the planet, Costa Rica is a role model for the conservation of biodiversity; with around a quarter of its land part of a protected forest or reserve. RBG Kew has many collaborative scientific projects located in Costa Rica, which include constructing a ‘family tree’ for all of its orchid species to learn how to better protect them, and documenting plants in La Amistad Biosphere Reserve - one of the richest places on Earth for plant diversity. What Kew are doing to keep visitors safe The safety and wellbeing of visitors is of the utmost importance to them and are continually monitoring and responding to the Covid-19 pandemic as it evolves. They are adhering to government advice to ensure visitors and staff remain safe while enjoying Orchids 2022. Safety measures will reflect government advice at the time of the exhibition run and will be clearly communicated across RBG Kew’s channels and onsite.

Ben, who also won the Small World category, said: “I’m so happy that the judges liked my photo so much. “I found this wasp spider on its web down in the grass and it was quite hidden away. I laid down to try and get lower than the spider so I could get the sunset coming through the grass in the picture.” The double victory followed a win in last year’s awards, as he claimed a category award for an image of a swan chasing another swan. The RSPCA Young Photographer Awards are open to anyone 18 or under, and recognise the best images taken on a camera or mobile. The awards are judged blind by a panel which includes RSPCS vice president and TV presenter

He said: “Ben’s photo of a wasp spider really stood out to all of us on the judging panel. “We felt it was a very skilful capture, with a carefully considered composition bringing colour into the scene. “It’s certainly unique in its approach to an often overlooked species, and a very worthy winner.” Other winners included nine-year-old Isabella Martin, who claimed the Mobile Phone & Devices prize for under-12s with a picture of her kitten, Hattie, playing on the bed. Another mobile winner was Ollie Smith, 12, for his picture of a stingray.

Featured artists are: Diana Croft, who has made a linoprint of Watts Cemetery Chapel specially for this show; Jennifer Jokhoo, who is drawn to the county’s wide skies and spectacular seasonal changes; Yeside Linney, recently runner-up in the Surrey Artist of Year 2021 competition plus Ruth Taylor, Grace Ellen, Jane Browne, Tania Busschau and Janina Klein – a number presenting new work for the first time. Heartlands: Inspired by our Landscape echoes the love of landscape that brought G F and Mary Watts to Compton, in the Surrey Hills. George 36 JANUARY 2022

Frederic Watts (1817 – 1904) - who together with his wife, the artist and designer Mary Watts (1849 – 1938), established Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village in the last decade of the 19th century - was himself a great painter of landscape, and a series of pictures from the 1890s depicting the Surrey countryside surrounding the Wattses’ Compton home can be seen in G F Watts’ studio, which has recently reopened to visitors. Alistair Burtenshaw, Director of Watts Gallery Trust, said: “Following what has been an extraordinary time, which has led to many of us rediscovering just how beautiful the countryside is here in the Surrey Hills, we are delighted to be celebrating local artists and our local landscape here at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village. We look forward to welcoming you to this exhibition, with all sales helping to raise funds for our wide-reaching Art for All learning programme.” Heartlands: Inspired by Our Landscape opens at Watts Contemporary Gallery on 14 January (until 13 March). All work is for sale, with prices from £200. During the exhibition, there will be a series of opportunities to ‘Meet the Artist’ (22 January, 5 February, 19 February,12 March, 11am-1pm). The artists will talk about their inspiration, their methods and the challenges they face. Some will also demonstrate their working practice.

Don’t call me stupid

N

ot everyone wakes up one morning having had an epiphany. Sometimes it takes a very long time to realise that you are coming to the conclusion that you need to do something with your life, which is frightening. You begin to question why, when reflecting on the past, you have only just reached this decision? And then the 101 questions and self-doubts start. Questions like: how will you manage on your own, can you afford to be on your own and do you even want to be alone? Afterall, you have put up with it for this long – why rock the boat? Are you blowing everything out of proportion? If you have reached this conclusion, surely you should already have answered many of these questions. It is sometimes a struggle to accept these feelings and self-doubt, and to voice these questions out loud. If you ask them now, are you being exactly what you have been told: “you’re just being stupid!” Every individual is different, we don’t look the same so why should we think the same? Despite all this, questions still arise, whether they’re intended or not. Where will I live? How do I afford to move? Can I afford the legal costs? You’ll start questioning how you can tell your partner the relationship is over, when you’ve been “given” such a comfortable lifestyle. How do you negotiate with them, and where do you even

Furthermore, how do you support your children through this, all whilst still questioning who will support you and listen to you. All these questions and more can be overwhelming and consuming, but there are answers, and a path through the worry. New Year – New Start

Resolving family disputes without going to court

THE DETAILS

I

t’s a sad reality that the heightened expectations of Christmas and the gathering of family members can put extra strain on family relationships, leaving parents and partners alike feeling the fallout in the New Year. There has long been a belief that the courts are busiest in January and the backlog caused by the pandemic will cause an already overloaded court system to creak under the pressure of new cases. We as a profession, and ever more so at Moore Barlow, promote numerous options to avoid the courts and the inherent delays, costs and adversity incurred in that approach. Dispute resolution is at the centre of our offering at Moore Barlow. We signpost clients to the now well-established methods of resolving family disputes outside the court process. As a result of a recent national independent survey undertaken by Moore Barlow, the evidence gathered supports this potential increase in family breakdowns over the last 12 months and the desire for many to find more bespoke ways to manage their relationship issues and to address issues in respect of the care arrangements for their children. With the Government raising concerns about parents bringing cases about their children

“We signpost clients to the now well-established methods of resolving family disputes outside the court process” before the court we all need to look to other ways of resolving such disputes. At Moore Barlow we have mediators to address all areas of family law, be it the grounds for divorce, the terms of a financial settlement, the arrangements for whom the children spend time with and when and issues arising for joint property ownership and cohabitation. Karen Barham, a consultant in our team, is a parenting coordinator who assists parents together, to develop a more constructive relationship about their children and is there to assist them resolve issues they cannot agree on, without the threat of, or recourse to the courts. Many of the team are trained as collaborative lawyers, being a process whereby the solicitors and clients all work together to resolve matters and are required to sign up to an agreement committing to reaching an out of court settlement.

About the research: On behalf of Moore Barlow, specialist research agency Censuswide conducted a national independent survey of 250 UK adults, all of which hold a c-suite-level position, earn £200k or more a year and have capital assets worth at least £2m. The survey asked respondents to answer questions about their personal wealth and family status.

WHY SEPARATION AND DIVORCE SHOULD BE A CIVILISED AFFAIR By Teresa Payne

I

f you are experiencing the anxiety and loss of a relationship ending and suffering sleepless nights worrying about the future, you are not alone. Almost 50% of all marriages end in divorce and for many it can be the most traumatic time in their lives. Months and sometimes years are spent deciding whether to separate and then, when the decision has been made, it can take an age to pluck up the courage to take action. Emotions run high and delays are usually down to fear of the unknown and what life will be like after the separation. Not to mention how you’ll cope financially and what you’ll tell the kids. The truth is there is no easy way out. However, the actions you take now and the choices you make will have a big impact on your new life. Your future is in your hands. You can choose to be reactive to your situation or you can be proactive and take the lead and put a stop to the fighting, anger and hurt. Divorce and separation is a life changing event and mistakes can be costly both emotionally and financially and you must be prepared to invest in order to secure your future. To take control you need information and advice from an experienced and trusted advisor which will allow you to make informed decisions about your future.

Why non-invasive treatments are becoming more popular than injectables! Lisa Harris, of Lisa Harris Skin Science, explains

Why Injectables can speed up the Ageing Process. Most clients, who have “over done” their skin by over using skin peels, harsh products, dermaabrasion, Botox and other fillers, are now looking to repair & improve skin health with other alternatives. Overuse of Botox can lead to muscle atrophy, causing the muscle to become lifeless, making it hard to stimulate & correct the muscle definition during skin treatments. Also thinning of the skin where you can visibly see discolouration with waves of reds & purples (where the skin transparently shows the muscle). Overuse of fillers, can stretch the skin over time and migrate causing facial distortion (pillow face), leading to an undesirable look. My Expert Advice Injectables are relatively safe but overuse is not a good thing. It’s a “No” for me & I’m glad that there is more awareness and better ways to improve your skins youthfulness. Skin can be transformed using non-injectable skin aesthetics, cosmeceutical skin care and skin food supplements. All three ways will transform the skin positively, and the client will see for themselves the improvements that all three together elicit. This is why I am so confident – there is nothing more persuasive than seeing positive results, especially when you know they are achieved in the right way. 56 JANUARY 2022

Corrective Treatments & Alternatives for Botox & Fillers With 27+ years in the Aesthetic Industry, I have used my wealth of knowledge, and clinical experience, to create Signature Skin Treatments, combining exclusive advanced technology & natural raw materials that organically rebuild the integrity of the skin, which addresses all skin concerns. Improving muscle tone, skin vitality and boosting Collagen (skin tightening), that results in a more natural, desirable look. We have global recognition for delivering facial rejuvenation & body treatments with long-lasting benefits. Gut & Skin Health Your skin is like a window into the health of your inner world, and because so many things in our lifestyles can wipe out the good bacteria we’re supposed to have, our skin often reflects imbalances in the system. Looking after your gut with; Prebiotics & Probiotics, help to repair your gut lining and feeds your microbiome (good bacteria). This will help to heal inflammation within your body (linked to Rosacea, Acne & Eczema), as well as keeping your skin looking younger & healthier. My ethos is to improve the overall skin health and speak the truth about skin ageing and how to slow this process down by increasing the volume within the skin and not by thinning out the skin.

Love Thy Handbag: The IT bag is back in a big way, and this is why.

N

ever has a new season wardrobe update meant quite so much or been so important. Many of us are struggling with how to freshen our collections after so many months spent in lounge wear and leggings, but the investment bag is here to save the day. The investment bag is back in a big way and there’s good reason for it. A quality, designer bag delivers a quick update to any wardrobe, but at the same time, offers reassurance that we are making a good investment in what is undoubtedly still an uncertain time. “Women are shopping for handbags in a very different way than before the pandemic,” states Paige Mengers, owner of popular pre-loved boutique chain, Phoenix Style. “Currently a third of our sales account for handbags, that is an increase of 105% from 2019 but whilst many of us may previously have had a different IT fashion bag for every day, we are now looking more towards classic and retro styles. Shoppers are spending more time doing research on what was cool and looking at the past for inspiration. Quality is also a big consideration and people are purchasing luxury brands such as Chanel, YSL, Gucci etc, as this reassures them that their exciting new bag will also deliver a return on investment,” she continues.

“The investment designer bag is back and in a big way and there’s good reason for it”

66 JANUARY 2022

For those of us looking to find the ultimate investment bag – Paige offers some tips: • Quality is king. • Consider pre-loved, not only are you doing your bit for the circular economy, but you are also more likely to bag a high-quality classic for a fraction of its original price. • Colour is great. We love colour, but if you want a bag to stand the test of time, neutral is best. • Lastly, brand is important if you want an investment bag that you can sell on at a later stage. Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermes are the top brands for resale. • You have to love it. None of the above counts for anything if you don’t just simply fall in love with that bag!

THE DETAILS PHOENIX STYLE is one of the UK’s original destinations for luxury re-sale fashion – specialising in handbags and accessories. The Enduring Appeal of

Japanese Interiors Anna Howell, Chaplins Interiors Editor

I

t’s been likened to a quiet storm. The type of idea that makes its way to our shores in whispers, riding the crest of waves like origami, wabi sabi and kintsugi. Far too ancient to be considered trendy, Japanese influences are nevertheless ever-present — at once as a vehicle for outstanding aesthetics, and as a roadmap for a more fulfilling life. The infatuation predates even today’s crop of international tastemakers. Charlotte Perriand, the acclaimed French designer, spent much of her heyday in Japan, and so did Italian architect Gianfranco Frattini. But what is novel, perhaps, is how necessary the Japanese approach to living now feels. How the Japanese home came to embody the ideals of serene, considered living is explained by Joy Hendry in her seminal 1995 essay, Wrapping Culture. “In Japanese culture, there is a certain power attached to the condition of being enclosed. Ascetics who shut themselves away were said to gain spiritual power, a concept in Japan known as utsubo”. While utsubo initially only applied to a handful of Zen philosophers, it soon trickled into the wider culture, leading to a reverence of life indoors and a more thoughtful approach to the way we design interiors. Today, many Japanese homes are distinguished by a sense of lightness. Dining room furniture is kept classic and minimal with clear open lines that encourage conversation, while sculptural

paper lanterns provide a soft halo of luminosity overhead. In this pantheon of aesthetics, sharp edges find short shrift, replaced instead by soft rounded silhouettes that seem to have been shaped by the elements instead. It’s an idea that even extends towards some of the more traditionally bulky items of furniture. In the hands of designers like Isamu Noguchi and Naoto Fukasawa, beds, bookcases and coffee tables seem to float above the ground, maximising the sense of available space. Journalist Marilena Sobacchi has described this new lexis of lightness as a concentration of expressivity in minimal form. We like to think of it as the ability to say a lot with a little. In the absence of excessive ornamentation, there is room to think. An idea that Marie Kondo explores in her bestselling series The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. “When your room is clean and uncluttered, you have no choice but to examine your inner state.” Marie Kondo Nor is the search for levity directly restricted to

interiors. As the news cycle intensifies, downloads of meditation apps like Calm and Headspace have reached fever pitch. So too, has the demand for a new type of influencer, the kind that advocates buying once and buying well over an endless cycle of materialism. Transcending the Zeitgeist in 2022 will naturally look different for everyone. But there’s something rather endearing about the idea that calm, stillness and serenity can become the house you live in. It’s in this arena that Japanese inspired-interiors excel. Championing intentionality over excess and stillness instead of clutter. To shop any of the Japanese-inspired designs in this article, simply head to chaplins.co.uk. The year of you

T

his year brings new health and wellness trends to the centre of our attention. 2022 is all about connecting to your inner wellbeing and embracing mindfulness and the good news is, both of these can be achieved through swimming. Wellbeing essentially refers to quality of life and can apply to both our mental and physical health, the aim being to make choices that are good for us and have positive impacts on our overall health. Mindfulness

78 JANUARY 2022

on the other hand, is the basic human ability to be fully present and aware of our feelings, thoughts and surroundings moment by moment. Steps towards mental and physical wellbeing can come in various forms, for you it could mean creating a place where the whole family can be together and spend time having fun or building somewhere just for you to wind down and relax. Swimming is a fantastic activity and an excellent way to work your entire body and cardiovascular system. As well as the amazing advantages for your physical health, swimming also has a remarkable impact on your mental health as it improves your mood, increases your self-esteem, lowers the risk of depression, slows dementia and cognitive decline, improves sleep and reduces stress. Numerous studies have also proven the benefits swimming can have on your body; swimmers have a lower risk of heart disease and strokes, lower blood pressure and reduced joint pain. Swimming is a great all round activity as a source of family fun or the hard hitting form of exercise you’re

Traditional wall panelling is finally affordable!

T

raditional wooden wall panelling has always extremely expensive, requiring many hours of carpenter’s time both in the workshop making it and on site installing it. These days even a single modest sized wall measuring 4m x 2.4m can easily cost more than £6000 to panel. One of the more creative uses for MDF is to turn it into decorative wall panelling. There are significant advantages of MDF over “real” wood panelling not least of which is cost. The fact that it is in sheet form also cuts down dramatically on installation time again adding to savings over traditional methods. The same size wall in the above example would typically cost around £400 for the panels and can easily be installed in a day by anyone with average DIY skills. And if you need to employ someone to install for you that should not add much more than £200 as a handyman capable of tiling or wall papering would tackle this with ease - no need for a highly skilled carpenter! Unlike timber MDF won’t shrink and expand every time the heating goes on and off, and so no need for the endless cycle of filling and redecorating! MDF does however vary enormously in quality and type so be careful when choosing your supplier. There is a lot of cheap imported boards

82 JANUARY 2022

that simply do not come close to the quality that some home-grown suppliers can offer. This is critical when it comes to how well the boards take a painted finish. It is also vitally important that you use the moisture resistant versions available for any panelling being installed in a bathroom or kitchen where there is bound to be higher levels of humidity as well as occasional splashing. The English Panelling Company (part of the long established Scumble Goosie furniture business) uses only moisture resistant (MR) grade boards as the extra additives that make the boards moisture resistant also greatly enhance the surface quality. This makes for easier painting and a better finish all round. Panelling has been around for hundreds of years and pre-dates plaster finished walls. It is important to choose an appropriate style that is sympathetic to the age of your property if living in an older house. Tongue and groove boards suit humbler cottages or the “downstairs” quarters, gun rooms and bathrooms of grander properties. Designs that incorporate squares and rectangles give a more classical feel and tend to suit town houses and larger country properties. The less is more rule always applies and sometimes just a feature wall in a room can look just as good as panelling the entire room.

THE DETAILS For advice on choosing the best style of panels, or help with estimating how much you need, just call The English Panelling Company on 01453 731305 or visit their website englishpanelling.com. Getting your garden in top shape this winter Planting Although a lot of people may think that winter is a time for shut down in the garden, Marcus points out that there are still plenty of options for those looking to do some planting in the winter. “In winter, you can plant Skimmia, which is a fantastic hardy shrub with beautiful flowers that look like berries at this time of year because they’re really tight and red. You can also plant winter Heathers, and Dobbies has a fantastic collection of these in stores now.” When discussing where best to place plants, Marcus recommends arranging winter containers near your back door so you can admire them from the comfort of your home without having to step outside.

Dobbies Ambassador, Daisy Payne

Grow your own Growing vegetables is something you can make a start on in winter and something that Marcus recommends if you’d like to reap the benefits earlier in the year. Marcus said: “It’s a bit more of a challenge to grow vegetables in winter but things like broad beans can still be planted and protected with a cloche, as well as onions and garlic, and green crops like winter gem lettuce will tolerate lower temperatures. Just make sure you check on varieties and give them as much protection as possible.”

T

he New Year brings a fresh start for all, including in our gardens. Winter is a fantastic time to prep your outdoor space for the warmer seasons, and Dobbies, the UK’s leading garden centre retailer, has outlined the best gardening jobs to get stuck into during winter on their latest podcast. In episode 21, Winter gardening tips, guest host and Dobbies’ Ambassador, Daisy Payne chats to Dobbies’ Horticultural Director, Marcus Eyles to find out what people can be doing in winter to prepare their gardens for spring and summer.

88 JANUARY 2022

Tidy up Marcus said: “We’re in that period where we want to be cutting back our herbaceous plants and getting rid of a lot of the debris that’s around. Do think about keeping some of the seed heads and branches that can give you some structure in the garden though, don’t go too crazy on tidying up.” Mulching is another tip that Marcus has for getting your garden looking polished in winter, with Daisy agreeing that it’s one of the best jobs to do at this time of year. Daisy said: “Mulching is one of my favourite things to do in the garden. One of the things I really love about it is that in itself, it tidies the garden up a bit and gives it a completeness in your borders and where you’ve got all your plants.”

Pruning Another important job for during the winter months is pruning to ensure any harsh weather doesn’t interfere too much with your garden. Marcus recommends taking the stems down by half to stop the wind catching plants as much over winter, and then in spring, he suggests pruning back the fresh shoots which will give nice structure for the plants ready to flower next year. Marcus and Daisy also discuss their top picks for must-have gardening accessories, perfect for gifting to loved ones who want to get into gardening this Christmas. Head over to Spotify or iTunes to listen to the podcasts and get more hints and tips on how to get your garden looking its best this winter. Browse all Dobbies podcast episodes here. dobbies.com

‘Flower Power’ roller blind range Ella Doran launches

D

esigner Ella Doran has announced the launch of a brand-new range of roller blinds entitled Flower Power. The new collection, joining her established, made-to-measure range, is made up of two mini collections – Floral Portraits, a series inspired by the great Dutch floral still life paintings of the late 17th and early 18th centuries and Floral Bursts, which feature a slightly more informal series of arrangements. The images were all shot and composed by Ella Doran, who first made her name in the late 1990s with her pioneering application of photography-based images and patterns onto products for the home. There are four new blind designs in each mini-collection, making eight in the overall series. ‘The works of the still life painters Jacob Woutersz Vosmaer and Rachel Ruysch were the initial inspiration for the series’ Ella Doran explained. ‘I’ve long been a fan of the arrangements in these paintings, where the flowers are portrayed against dark backgrounds and strike a great balance between formality and a certain real-ness and celebration of Nature’s imperfections. I wanted to pay homage to the paintings, but in a contemporary way, with the photographic style allowing the flowers themselves to win out more over the background.’ elladesign.co.uk
