SILENT POOL GIN: L

A spirited tale of nature, craftsmanship, and sustainability

et’s take you back to 2013: A group of friends happen on a gorgeous location known as the Silent Pool, deep in the Surrey hills, an area of outstanding beauty. This discovery sparked the birth of Silent Pool Gin, a brand that embodies the essence of its serene birthplace and the surrounding Surrey Hills. They converted dilapidated farm buildings into a working distillery with a restored vintage wood-fired steam boiler powering a hand-built copper still. They source local ingredients, exotic botanicals, and experiment with all kinds of recipes – sometimes failing, forever seeking, always refusing to compromise on quality. Until finally, they create a gin of rare taste and beauty. They christen it after its place of birth. Inspired by the crystal-clear waters of the Silent Pool, sourced from rainwater trickling down the North Downs hills, the gin captures the natural purity of its origin. The iconic teal blue colour of the bottle mirrors the pool’s trademark hue, a result of the chalk bed that purifies and gives the water its stunning appearance. Immediately popular with locals, Silent Pool Gin quickly acquires new fans, a large social following, and rafts of industry awards, amassing an enviable reputation across the world. Silent Pool Gin is classic gin at heart featuring over 24 botanicals. Full-bodied and fresh with depth, clarity and above all else, flavour. It’s a rich, clean, juniper-driven spirit with floral layers of lavender

20 JANUARY 2024

and chamomile. Fresh notes of citrus and kaffirlime are grounded with the subtle sweetness of local honey, creating a well-balanced gin that’s both traditional and refreshingly individual. The Silent Pool distillery is not just about crafting exceptional gin; it’s a commitment to sustainability. From solar panels generating power to a closedloop glycol cooling system and boilers powered by hydrogenated vegetable oil and local sustainable forests, Silent Pool Gin strives for eco-friendly practices. Embracing its local community, the distillery supports beekeeping, sourcing honey from the village Beekeeper, that it’s used in their innovative distillation process providing its signature roundness. Provenance matters, and Silent Pool Gin’s unique characteristics and sustainable practices set it apart. The Surrey Hills and Silent Pool location, steeped in nature shape the brand’s identity. The Deer of Richmond Park

The park was enclosed with an 8 mile long brick wall in 1637. Most of the wall that still encloses Richmond park is the original. The Royal deer have been maintained in Richmond ever since. The deer have played a major role in the Park’s history and have shaped the landscape too. Their special grassland habitat depends on grazing and the parkland trees have a distinctive ‘browse line’ as the deer eat all the leaves and twigs growing below about 1.5 metres. Deer grazing also prevents tree seedlings from growing, keeping the grassland open. For young trees to survive they need to be

22 JANUARY 2024

protected against damage from deer antlers for some 50 years. During the autumn the deer ‘rut’ (breeding season) takes place. The red stags and fallow bucks compete for females (known as hinds and does respectively). At this time, the large males roar, bark and clash antlers in a spectacular way in an attempt to fight off rivals and to attract as many females as possible. The young are born mainly in June, and are hidden by their mothers amongst the bracken and long grass. Females and their young are very vulnerable and sensitive to disturbance at this time Herds of red and fallow deer roam freely within much of the park. The herds are culled in November to keep numbers manageable and the park population healthy. The British Deer Society and the Deer Initiative of England and Wales, who are regarded as the main welfare organizations dealing with the welfare and management of deer nationally, recognise that parkland deer numbers must be managed and that removal of some of the deer is necessary each year to keep populations at acceptable levels. The keeping of deer in enclosed English parkland has a long heritage. Although many ancient parks were originally maintained for hunting purposes, in recent times it is recognised that the deer herds of the Royal Parks in London are an integral part

of the parks’ ecosystem, as well as being a valuable amenity and educational feature. These parkland deer are wild animals, which are not regularly shepherded or handled; they are left to breed normally and to establish normal social behaviour. All deer parks have a maximum capacity of deer numbers, which must not be exceeded to avoid problems of disease and damage to the natural environment (the complex ecosystems for which Richmond Park is notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, National Nature Reserve and a

111 Places In Windsor

That You Shouldn’t Miss Author of new book 111 Places In Windsor That You Shouldn’t Miss, Jonjo Maudsley shares tips for visiting the favourite royal destination.

W

hen you think of Windsor, you think of the castle. The Berkshire town’s central edifice has long been its star attraction and a magnet for so many posh weekend trips. Two million people a year descend upon the world’s longest continually inhabited royal residence to drink in the pomp of the maximalist state apartments, the Gothic grandeur of St George’s Chapel, and the kitsch charm of Queen Mary’s Dollhouse. But such splendour carries an imperial price tag. The entry fee to the castle for a family of four is £99. Factor in the cost of your swish hotel and the obligatory day trip to nearby Legoland and you’re looking at a rather pricey staycation. 24 JANUARY 2024

But there is a cheaper way to see what Windsor has to offer if you’re prepared to forsake the royal pageantry and embrace the town beyond the bastions. Novel enterprises and adventurous initiatives are combining to help the historic market town break out from the shadow of the castle and emerge as a destination in its own right. Better still, they are making it possible to spend a weekend without busting out the privy purse. I start my own weekend a million miles away from the castle (metaphorically) in the heart of the Vansittart Industrial Estate. Here lies the Loading Bay Café, Windsor’s first plant-based, locally sourced coffee shop de force, and an establishment that speaks to the trendiness of Windsor better

than any other. Over a vegan BLT (plates from £8), co-founder Dean Soden proudly tells me of everything this unit is known to contain: a Thursday evening supper club; a vintage bric-a-brac market; and on this particular morning, a punk rock gig that fills the air with anti-establishment rage. In the distance, the Royal Standard flies over the castle, and I wonder if the King is ironically bopping along. Sure, a warehouse district wouldn’t ordinarily feature on a list of Windsor’s ‘must-see’ destinations, but this may well be the epicentre of the town’s fast-changing identity. Bisected by Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Windsor Railway Bridge, the estate has recently become home to an emerging craft brewery scene, instigated by my next destination, the Windsor & Eton Brewery. On their sample-rich tour (webrew.co.uk; £25pp), I learn that Windsor was once a big dot on the national map of beer, a title the town is now poised to seize back. The success of Windsor & Eton Brewery has lately encouraged Indie Rabble and Two Flints to open their own taprooms beneath neighbouring arches of Brunel’s viaduct. Is it too early to call this assembly the ‘Windsor Beer Mile’? Not according to the locals. Eager to learn more about the urban history of Windsor, I head next for a tour of the town’s parochial churches, with my first stop at St Andrew’s. Built from the same chalk upon which his fortification was plonked, William the Conqueror’s favourite church pipped the castle to the title of ‘oldest building in Windsor’. The stained-glass windows are worth coming for alone, these being the work of Sir Ninian Comper, better known for 26 JANUARY 2024

his work on Westminster Abbey (free to visit; Wed & Fri, 10am–12pm; standrewsclewer.org). Then it’s over to All Saints. In 2017, this redbrick Victorian masterpiece attracted national attention when its parishioners stumbled upon an impossibly beautiful reredos by Thomas Hardy, crafted during his short stint as an architect and later inexplicably covered up for 100 years by wood panelling (free to visit; church open Mon– Wed & Sat, 10am–4pm). Later, I head down the Thames Path to Boveney to find St Mary Magdalene. The lonely belfry of this now-redundant Saxon-era chapel looms large over the surrounding fields. During daylight hours it is open to the public, who will find evidence of generations of worshippers dating back

hundreds of years written in the graffiti scribbled in the pews and the knee-shaped abrasions in the hassocks. Time for lunch, methinks, and so I head back into town to Trinity Yard. I while away some time shopping for avant-garde furniture in Urbansuite before ending up in Millar’s Eatery, a love letter to brunches brought back from around the world by journeymen father-and-son co-founders Richard and Ross (millarseatery.co.uk; brunches from £4, mains from £6). For the evening’s revelries, it’s over to Castle Hill, the medieval epicentre of the town, passing along the way via Bachelor’s Acre to admire local sculptor Lydia Karpinska’s The Windsor Lady, a humble bronzework of Queen Elizabeth II. My destination is a building that attracts a glut of interest, known locally – and quite appropriately – as the Crooked House. The story goes that it was constructed using unseasoned green oak, which warped before hardening, resulting in its now trademark nine-degree tilt. This suits its proprietors, The Shambles Bar, who find that social media snappers do half their marketing for them. The other half is down to their own hard work, having renovated this curious casa into an intimate setting in which to enjoy their hand-picked wines (theshamblesbar.co.uk; bottles from £28). When it comes to lodgings, many will head to the glamorous hotels overlooking the castle. But my room is instead a little outside of town. The Loch & The Tyne by Adam Handling is on a mission to be Britain’s most sustainable gastropub, with ingredients grown on-site going on to make mouth-watering interpretations of classic British fare, all sold at what the restaurant calls cost-of-living-busting prices. A hearty six-course tasting menu serenades me to my cosy bedroom with a view over the glebes of Old Windsor and Runnymede (lochandtyne.com; tasting menu £65pp; rooms start from £147). For my second day, there’s enough time to 28 JANUARY 2024

sample Windsor’s museums. Of particular noteworthiness is the Windsor & Royal Borough Museum (Wed–Sun, 10am–4pm), situated within the town’s Guildhall, which houses a collection of incredible Bronze Age finds from nearby Kingsmead Quarry. Then it’s over to Eton, where for one day a month, the kooky-cool History on Wheels museum opens its doors. For just £7, I spend the morning admiring the eclectic collections of Tony Oliver, which includes everything from General McArthur’s Cadillac to the country’s largest collection of Charles & Diana porcelain (see website for opening times; historyonwheels.co.uk). Then in the afternoon, Eton College offers not one, not two, but three of its own museums – all totally free to enter. There is the Natural History Museum, smaller than its South Kensington namesake but no less striking, and the Museum of Antiquities, a collection of ancient artefacts donated by Old Etonians, but the stand-out exhibition is the Museum of Eton Life, a look behind the curtain at how Eton boys live their daily lives within this hallowed school (museums open Sun 2.30–5pm). Minus lodgings, I’ve spent less than the combined ticket price to the castle exploring some of Windsor’s most intriguing and historic sights – and yet, I leave feeling I’ve barely scratched the surface. So yes, it’s not only possible, it’s darn near advisable to do Windsor on the cheap. With so much to see, do and taste beyond the castle walls, you’d be forgiven for forgetting Windsor was ever home to, erm… who was it again?

Cain Manor

A

rriving at this half-timbered hideaway where Hampshire meets Surrey scores higher than most on the fairytale scale. The long approach, up and down through woodland glades; a sign here and there warning of badgers crossing. The first sight of the house, at the brow of the hill - an Elizabethan stunner straight out of Country Life. The sense of space. The postcard-ness of it all. And then you find the story’s just as alluring inside as out. The original oak beams, beautifully restored and everywhere you look, are actually repurposed from ancient ships (who knew the Tudors were so hot on recycling?). There are huge open fires, roaring in winter, and views out to the willow trees and topiary of an idyllic country garden, festooned with lights at dusk. Beyond, you spy the Surrey Hills in the distance, beneath the setting sun. The Music Room is Cain Manor’s showpiece, an airy space with a cathedral-like window at one end and a gallery in the eaves at the other - just the spot for musicians (and birds-eye photography of the proceedings). Bathed in natural light, this barnlike setting needs little decoration, and is equally suited to a ceremony or full wedding breakfast and evening reception (with its own bar tucked away in the corner). In spring and summer, the party spills out onto the patio and the gardens beyond, where younger guests can roam free (or keep themselves busy

CHRISTIAN DIOR, CHRISTIAN BÉRARD. JOYFUL MELANCHOLY, A NEW BOOK PUBLISHED BY GALLIMARD

T

his joint biography of Christian Dior and Christian Bérard’s sets us out into a fascinating period, from inter-war Paris to the post-war Café Society. In a munificently detailed book published by Editions Gallimard in collaboration with Dior, Laurence Benaïm looks back at the sincere ties uniting Christian Bérard and Christian Dior. On the surface, everything seems to oppose them: the extravagant, ultra-sensitive Bébé contrasts with the discreet, mysterious Monsieur Dior. Yet it was love at first sight. “All of Dior is in Bérard, all of Bérard is in Dior. This book is not a two-headed biography — it is a meandering in the heart of a history haunted by dreams, affinities, and secrets sewn in the lining of vanishing time.” Laurence Benaïm* In the 1930s, Christian Dior, then a partner in the Pierre Colle gallery, exhibited the young Bérard’s paintings alongside those of Dalí, Picasso and Matisse. A few years later, when he opened a house in his own name, Christian Bérard gave him

34 JANUARY 2024

his bountiful support. In return, the couturier entrusted Bérard with the decoration of his first boutique, Colifichets, on Avenue Montaigne. Christian Bérard advised him to adorn this initial setting in toile de Jouy – the celebrated signature-print and emblem of French savoir-faire, that would become an iconic Dior reference. “The seeming casualness brought the whole place to life,” Monsieur Dior wrote referring to the work of his friend, ”that arbiter of parties, of all elegance…”. The book Christian Dior, Christian Bérard. Joyful melancholy – sumptuously illustrated with works of art and precious photographs – brings to life the Paris of artists, from the Belle Epoque to the Liberation, from the Boeuf sur le toit to the post-war Café Society. Two destinies that respectfully echo and influence each other; two Christians, two men always brought together by their shared passions, art and beauty in all their forms. From page to page, they appear in the truth of their purest talent, between triumphs and doubts, promises and secrets. An ode to friendship and dreams. What is Accord? Last year saw one of the biggest reforms in family law, with the introduction of no-fault divorce under the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act. This means individuals can now make a joint application for the first time to end their marriage and there is no need to apportion blame. ROYAL REVIEW:

How Kate upped her fashion and beauty game in 2023 The Princess of Wales stepped out in some incredible outfits last year. By Katie Wright.

A

s the royal family’s foremost fashion icon, the Princess of Wales is often in the sartorial spotlight. Aided by assistant Natasha Archer, Kate has continued to evolve her style in recent years, and has impressed royal watchers with her outfit choices in 2023. “Over the last year Catherine, Princess of Wales, has proven she’s equally adept at showstopping glamour for state occasions and formal events, and casual elegance when carrying out charity engagements,” says Caroline Young, fashion writer and author of The Fabulous Frances Farquharson: The Colourful Life of an American in the Highlands. “There may be rules for royal dressing, but Catherine’s style isn’t conservative – she embraces fashion-forward garments from both the high street and haute couture in bursts of colour. “Rather than just keeping it muted with beiges and blues, she often favours warm tones, such as pinks, reds and yellows.” Plus, the royal’s glam squad always ensure her hair and make-up are perfectly suited to her outfit and the occasion. Here, we look back at some of Kate’s most memorable fashion and beauty moments of 2023… 66 JANUARY 2024

McQueen gown On the Bafta red carpet in February the Princess donned a reworked version of a flowing white Alexander McQueen gown she wore to the 2019 awards, with the corsage on the shoulder replaced with a flowing cape detailing. Kate teamed the dress with black opera gloves and clutch bag, finishing her look with a pair of £17.99 statement earrings from Zara, which instantly sold out. “Kate is keen to prove that you can wear the same dress twice,” Young says. “She’s often described as the queen of recycling in the way she re-wears old favourites, which fits with the environmental ethos that she champions.” Erdem suit Attending the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey in March, Kate chose an elegant navy skirt suit with delicate floral embroidery from one of her long-time favourite designers, Erdem. She paired the two-piece suit with a midnight blue saucer-style hat and had her hair styled in a chic updo that beautifully complemented the ladylike ensemble. Coronation outfit Kate was praised for her stunning outfit at the most high-profile royal event of the year, the

coronation of the King. She wore a deep blue Royal Victorian Order mantle edged in scarlet, over an Alexander McQueen embroidered ivory silk crepe dress. In a break from tradition, she decided not to wear a tiara, instead choosing an intricate silver headpiece by Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen, with her long brown locks twisted into a neat updo. Spotty dress Kate has worn trendy London-based designer Alessandra Rich several times in the past few years, including for her appearance at the Order of the Garter service in June. The vintage-style spotty white dress, teamed with a navy and white feather-trimmed hat, drew comparisons to Diana, Princess of Wales, who wore a similar outfit to Royal Ascot in 1988.

were twisted into a braided bun which celebrity hairdresser Edward James described as a “polished Princess Leia” look, referencing the Star Wars character. Purple suit Opting for another sharp suit for the Shaping Us National Symposium in November, the Princess donned a bright purple two-piece by British designer Emilia Wickstead. Young admires Kate’s bold, on-trend look: “Throughout 2023 she’s particularly favoured block-coloured blazers and trousers in various hues, a look that is smart and on-point but also lends a more casual, approachable feel.”

Pink dress “In June, Kate was on-trend with the blush ‘Ahana’ dress by Beulah worn when she opened the Young V&A,” says Young. “With its tailored bodice and floaty skirt, it was the hit dress of the summer, but she got there first, having worn it two years before, at Wimbledon.” The Princess had her glossy locks styled in bouncy waves for the occasion. Balmain blazer For her first appearance at Wimbledon 2023, Kate – who is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club – chose an Eighties-style mint green blazer by glamorous French fashion house Balmain. Tapping into the Wimbledon whites theme, she teamed the double-breasted jacket with a white pleated maxi skirt and court heels. Blazer and twisted braid On a visit to the Orchard Centre in Sittingbourne in September, the Princess rewore a favourite Zara blazer, but switched up her look with a bold new hairstyle. Transform your brow game T Beauty buffs have been sharing their best eyebrow-enhancing advice. By Katie Wright.

ikTok is an amazing source for beauty tips, with professional make-up artists and amateurs alike raving about their favourite products, and posting helpful videos showing exactly how they use them. Recently, there’s been an influx of incredible eyebrow advice as #beautytok stars share the tools and techniques they use to get their brows looking gorgeous.

HERE ARE THREE OF THE BEST TIKTOK BROW HACKS TO TRY NOW… Shape with three dots Mexican beauty influencer Jessica Carrasco (AKA SlaybyJess on TikTok) has shared her foolproof guide for creating the perfect arched brow shape. “A lot of times we don’t know where our brows should start or end,” she says in the video that has had 1.9m views, explaining how to use an eyebrow pencil to map out each brow with three dots. Take your eyebrow pencil (with the lid removed) and start by holding it vertically next to your nose, placing the first dot where the tip hits the inside of your brow. Next, angle the pencil so that it crosses over your pupil and make the second dot, which is the top of the arch. Finally, angle the pencil so it’s just past the outer corner of your eye. “These little marks represent the front, the arch and the end of your brow. Now you can start filling in your brows,” Carrasco explains, using light strokes to mimic brow hairs. “As you start filling in, the little marks will disappear. Lastly, you want to brush them out using a spoolie.” Even out your brows Florida-based beauty blogger Lamia Dagher explains how to use the three-dot technique and a combination of brow-filling products to

70 JANUARY 2024

create a more symmetrical look if your brows aren’t entirely level. After making the first marks on the insides of your brows, hold your pencil horizontally at the top of your highest eyebrow and mark where the other arch should be. “Use a small and precise brow pencil to draw a thin line underneath the brow,” Dagher says. “Use a light hand and flicking upward motion to create the front part of the brow and not make it too harsh.” She recommends using a lighter shade of pencil on the inside and a darker shade towards the end of the brow: “Don’t be afraid to draw an entirely new arch on the lower side with that darker shade.” Use the same shade to fill in the gaps then go in with a liquid brow pen, Dagher says: “For a seamless blend, use a brow pen to fake hair-like strokes throughout the brow – this step has been a gamechanger for me.” Clean up with concealer “I think we can all agree eyebrows are lifechanging,” says celebrity make-up artist Claudia Neacsu in a video showing how she uses a triangular-shaped twist-up brow pencil to create natural-looking brows, offering a clever concealer hack for a more lifted look. “Start by using the flat side of the pencil to fill in any gaps. Switch to the thin side of the pencil in order to create hair-like strokes,” Neacsu says. “I also love to use a little bit of concealer at the end in order to define and lift the eyebrow,” she adds, using a flat concealer brush to apply the product in a clean line and a softer brush to blend it out.

YOUR PERFECT LIPSTICK SHADE ACCORDING TO YOUR STAR SIGN Astrologists suggest the tones that match your traits. By Katie Wright.

ARIES For the sign ruled by Mars, aka the red planet, bright reds and fiery oranges complement Aries’ confident personality. “These warm hues symbolise their dynamic spirit and help them command attention wherever they go,” says intuition coach and psychic Julie Chandler. “Whether it’s a classic red lipstick that exudes power or a statement orange that represents their zest for life, Aries can rock these shades with their natural charisma.”

O

ur star sign can tell us a lot about our personality type and preferences in life, and when it comes to make-up, there’s one product that epitomises one’s style more than any other: lipstick. From matte to gloss and bright to neutral, the possibilities are endless, but what lip look is best according to astrology? We asked Zodiac experts for their advice on the lip shades that suit each sign…

74 JANUARY 2024

“A grounded and peaceful sign, Taurus favours a subtle aesthetic,” says celebrity psychic and astrologer Inbaal Honigman, which is why she recommends a neutral, brown-toned lip colour. “Burnt caramel is a gentle and warm shade, which illustrates the cosy outlook of those born under the sign of the bull. Luxury styling will be enhanced by a rich satin finish.”

GEMINI For the social butterflies of the zodiac, a versatile but vibrant pink or coral will suit their playful nature. “These shades capture their youthful and

lively energy while allowing them to express their fun-loving side,” Chandler says. “Whether it’s a playful hot pink or a subtle coral, Geminis can effortlessly pull off these shades and add a touch of flirtatiousness to their look.”

CANCER For homebody Cancerians, it’s all about simplicity and feel-good vibes. “Cancer likes to get made-up with the minimum of fuss, and will choose a balmy lip tint for ease of application and a fuss-free feel,” says Honigman. “Gentle peach hues fit the loving vibe of those born under the sign of the crab.”

LEO It won’t come as a surprise to glamour-loving Leos that bold hues are best. “A shade that complements their radiant and passionate aura is a deep, rich burgundy or a luxurious, vibrant plum,” Chandler says. “These shades reflect their regal presence and help them command attention wherever they go.”

VIRGO “Neat and organised, Virgos enjoy a natural look, letting their innate beauty shine,” says Honigman, who recommends a lightweight lip tint or stain, rather than a full-coverage lipstick. “A fresh shade of pretty pink, such as rosewood, suits the practical style of those born under the sign of the virgin.”

LIBRA Representing their harmonious nature, a subtle ‘your lips but better’ look suits Librans. “A shade that complements their gentle and romantic aura is a soft, rosy pink or a warm, peachy nude,” Chandler says. “These shades reflect their innate elegance and help them create a sense of balance and poise in their appearance.”

SCORPIO “Intense and dramatic, Scorpio appreciates individuality in styling, with a bit of an edge,” says Honigman, which is why she suggests rich berry tones with a matte or satin finish. “Burgundy lips in berry shades are the perfect balance of shade and sweetness for those born under the sign of the scorpion.”

SAGITTARIUS Free-spirited Sagittarians should embrace their

adventurous side with an eye-catching lip colour. “A shade that complements their bold and fiery energy is a vibrant berry or a fiery orange-red,” says Chandler. “These shades represent their adventurous spirit and help them make a statement wherever they go.”

CAPRICORN “A business-minded and focused sign, Capricorn practically invented power dressing and powerful make-up,” Honigman says, and it’s got to be “luxe not dupes” when choosing a statement red lip. “Nononsense lips in the reddest of reds scream ‘strength’ for those born under the sign of the sea-goat. They’ll favour a matte finish for that upmarket feel.”

ELIZABETH ARDEN BEAUTIFUL COLOR LIQUID LIPSTICK LACQUER BURGUNDY, £14.15, AVAILABLE FROM ESCENTUAL.

VIEVE MODERN MATTE LIPSTICK MUSE, £23, AVAILABLE FROM VIEVE

AQUARIUS One might expect unconventional Aquarians to rock something distinctive such as metallic lilac, but Chandler recommends a more minimalist approach: “A clear gloss, with its natural shine and subtle enhancement, can go a long way in showcasing an Aquarius’ unique and creative personality. “It’s a reflection of their ability to stand out effortlessly without relying on bold colours. The clear gloss adds a touch of freshness and minimalism, allowing their natural beauty and individuality to shine through.”

GUERLAIN ROUGE G SATIN LIPSTICK REFILL ROSEWOOD, £22.10, AVAILABLE FROM ESCENTUAL

PISCES “Dreamy and romantic, Pisces aspire to emulate the feels and looks of storybook characters and leading ladies of their favourite love stories,” Honigman says. That’s why only a rosy pink will do: “Enduring and kissable, a romantic peony shade will suit those born under the sign of the fish. A glossy finish will give Pisces that otherworldly quality that they appreciate.”

Essential loungewear trends Snuggle up in style with these effortless outfits. By Katie Wright.

A

s we get into the depths of winter and the temperatures continue to drop, our comfiest clothes become more important than ever. Whether it’s for weekend cocooning with the family, trying to keep warm while working from home or running errands on chilly mornings, loungewear is the perfect solution for your everyday winter wardrobe. This season, fashion meets function with ultra-cosy fabrics, chic colour combinations, and sportswear-inspired styles you’ll want to wear around the clock. These are the key loungewear trends to know about now… Fuzzy fabrics Teddy bear-esque textiles such as fleece and borg are bang on trend and provide extra insulation when you need it the most. For a beautifully luxe lounge look, opt for a minimalist two-piece set in a soft cream, white or ivory shade. Latte lounging As seen on Jennifer Lawrence and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, the ‘latte dressing’ trend – wearing a combination of coffee colours – has blown up on TikTok and it works perfectly with loungewear too. From milky tones to rich mocha, you can mix and match separates or go headto-toe in one shade. Huggable hoodies For days when you plan to stay put on the sofa, a super-soft oversized hoodie is the ultimate winter fashion fix. A cross between a dressing gown and a blanket, a fluffy hooded dress is wonderfully warm and makes a fantastic gift too. 82 JANUARY 2024

Preparing for Ski Season: How to avoid common injuries W

ith many of us missing the slopes last year because of Covid-19 restrictions, avid skiers will be itching to head to colder climates this winter. Although a hugely exhilarating pastime, skiing can also be classed as an extreme sport. And for good reason too, as not many of us prepare for the physical demand that skiing places on the body, meaning that injuries are common. Here, Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon from King Edward VII’s Hospital in Marylebone, Mr Sam Oussedik, explains how you can prepare yourself for ski season — to help reduce your risk of injury, so you can look forward to your next adventure on the slopes.

What are the most common skiing injuries? As a higher-risk yet popular sport, overall injury 84 JANUARY 2024

“Although a ski injury can happen to anyone, the risk of injury is higher in those who haven’t received professional training”

rate from skiing is close to one injury per 1,000 days skied. And, skiing can result in various types of injuries, affecting different parts of the body. The most common are: • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture or sprain which occurs in your knee • Medial collateral ligament (MCL) rupture or sprain which occurs in your knee • Shoulder sprains, fractures and dislocations • Wrist and thumb fractures • Head injuries, whiplash and concussion

What causes most accidents on the slopes? Although a ski injury can happen to anyone, the risk of injury is higher in those who haven’t received professional training. Those who rent rather than own their ski equipment, and those aged between 35 and 50 years old, are also at a higher risk.

Accidents while skiing are often caused by: • Poor fitness • Not warming up • Not taking enough ski lessons • Misunderstanding or not taking notice of the safety rules on both the slopes and the ski lifts • Taking too many, or large risks, such as going off-piste • Poor judgement • Incorrect, ill-fitting or damaged skiing equipment • Collisions

How can I prevent ski injury? When it comes to skiing, preparation is everything. The more you prepare, the less likely you are to get injured. Here are some tips to help prevent ski injuries: Physical fitness – skiing is a physically demanding sport, so maintaining a good fitness level before you ski is essential for reducing your risk of injury. Performing exercises that help to condition your body and core muscles can help to prevent injury, but it’s important to follow the advice of your GP. If you experience any pain when exercising, stop and seek the advice of your medical professional. Ski lessons – if you’re a beginner or you haven’t skied for a few seasons, then make sure you take professional ski lessons. Even experienced skiers can benefit from lessons. They help with your confidence as well as your technique, and can also teach you how to fall correctly in order to reduce the risk of injury. Skiing to your ability – whether you are new to skiing or not, make sure you stick to the safest run that’s within your ability. Only move up when you’re absolutely confident to do so and wellpractised. Warming up – as with any exercise, physically exerting yourself with cold or stiff muscles can cause an injury. Starting your day on the slower runs is also a good idea, no matter how experienced you are. Use protective equipment – items such as wrist guards and pads for the elbows and knees

More information If you’re concerned about an injury speak to an expert orthopaedic consultant at King Edward VII’s Hospital such as Mr Sam Oussedik on 0203 930 1392 Mon – Fri 9am – 5pm kingedwardvii.co.uk

can help protect your joints. A ski helmet is a good idea to help reduce your risk of injury. Don’t ski when you’re tired – injuries are more likely if you haven’t had enough rest, or you’re keen to squeeze in one last run at the end of the day. Dehydration can also cause tiredness, so make sure you’re properly hydrated throughout the day. Don’t consume alcohol and ski – not only are you more likely to become dehydrated and tired on the slopes, drinking leads to recklessness and accidents because your judgement becomes impaired and you take more risks.

2023: The Year of the

ECLECTIC INTERIOR J

ust where has the time gone... One moment we’re still basking in the glow of Salone del Mobile and now, the year is over and it still feels like we’re still waiting for The Big 2023 Interiors Movement to emerge – this isn’t how it’s supposed to be! Or is it? Sure, there have been some growing themes throughout the year, but unlike before they exist either happily merging into each other, the dividing lines broken down, or completely contradicting each other. And that’s what 2023 has all been about, the throwing away of the rule book, and the uninhibited celebrating of good design, whatever it may be, and whatever it may sit next to in the home. Eclecticism, doing whatever we like in our interiors, was the decorating motto of 2023. We’ve seen the rise of ‘The home as the sanctuary’ in recent years – this year it’s more like ‘My home is just for me’. Like that chair? Take it. Like that table? Take it. They don’t go together? That’s ok, it’s all about how they make us feel – if they summon that warm, fuzzy feeling in your chest, they belong in your dining room. It’s historic. It’s hyper-contemporary. It’s highgloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi. It’s luxe. It’s laid back. Put all of the interior pieces you love into a big pot, mix them all together, and that’s 2023. Spaces became dynamic, personalised and free.

Interiors became about self-expression, each area a visual representation of who you are, design objects becoming strokes on an artist’s canvas. Beautiful objects stood in the home to be admired standalone or as part of the fuller exhibition. Colours danced, textures soared and materials intermingled. Styles, influences and ages fused. It’s wild, it’s calm, and yet it really makes sense. 2023 was the year of the Me Interior, the Do Whatever You Like Interior, the Embrace It All Interior. But there were a few signals along the way as to where we’re headed. Surfaces spanned got tactile, from the highlytextured to the mega smooth, with colours similarly extreme and high-definition, pigmentrich tones taking over. Scandi design took an unexpected twist, sofas went exploring and metallics got involved with it all. It was quite the year. In the closing moments of 2023, the echoes of such eclectic design resonate, leaving a lasting impression for the new interiors era, one where diversity and the celebration of unique aesthetics define the way we curate our spaces. Let us present the key materials and finishes from the mix that will guide us into the coming year...

COLOURFUL EXPLOSION: Dig out your kaleidoscopes and pop on your sunglasses because the pigment party isn’t over. 92 JANUARY 2024

“It’s historic. It’s hypercontemporary. It’s high-gloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi”

Powerful, impactful colours have reigned this year and there’s no sign of a slowdown. Lead by the primary tones of vivid scarlet, rich ultramarine and radiant yellow with support from fiery orange, intense magenta and in-the-jungle green, the modern furniture designs of 2023 were soaked in saturation.

THE NEW NORDIC:

SUPER TEXTURES:

If you’re an aficionado of Scandi style, you always knew what you were going to get when adding to your collection – the highest quality materials, illustrious design names and classic, pass-down-the-generations-worthy design. OK – nothing’s changed in that regard, but this year Nordic furniture had a different feel, many pieces completely shaking off the past and creating brand new, original and innovative designs rather than the quiet subtleties we may be used to.

ADVENTUROUS SOFAS:

From exaggerated upholstery to extravagant finishes, this year we honed in on touch. Ridged markings were carved into solid materials and tailored into the soft to highlight their threedimensionality form a layer of shadows. Glass took a U-turn and went from the definition of smooth to hazy, distorted and uneven, taking on the look of frozen water and casting shadows that transform a room into something ethereal. Materials got loose, relaxing their yarns to become more tactile, plush or soft for a cosy cocooning feel as well as creating experimental juxtapositions alongside other textures.

The modern sofa has moved into the realms of indescribability – it’s something curved, something angled, something long, something compact, something with gaps in, something a bit hard... Furniture-wise, the sofa is the centre of the home. It’s the comfiest place to be, where everyone wants to sit, its where we unwind, its where we relax, it’s where we catch up, it’s where life happens. Our seating needs are growing – to engage with each other, to fit around corners beauty, to fit the extended family, to double as a work space, to create sculptural – and sofas have heard us.

Disco-ball-worthy spaces entered the contemporary design sphere this year with metallic accents edging indoors. It was a year that glittered, glistened and shone as playful and exuberant metallics graced platforms of all kinds: from the most up-to-date of living rooms to the catwalks of Dior, Chanel and Tory Burch, as well as stages stormed by Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. From golden glints to silvery sheens, metallic accents in the home are enthralling and magical.

DAZZLING METALLICS:

Top things to consider when designing a bathroom space fittings are the perfect choice. By hiding the pipes within the wall cavity, the fittings sit flush to the wall, reducing the possibility of bumping into them when showering and creating a sleek finished look. You can create additional in-shower storage by utilising the void in a stud or false wall to build alcoves for storing shower products, in turn maximising space on the floor. These alcoves can easily become a real design feature, by adding lighting and/or contrasting tiles to inject personality into the space.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT GLASS Shower glass comes in many shapes and sizes but there’s always an option to suit your space. Firstly, think about whether you want a shower enclosure or a more open space with a shower screen. If you’re opting for an enclosure, consider which shape will work best, such as pentagonal to utilise the corner of a room or three-sided if you have a bit more space available. If you go for shower glass, think about which style you like, whether that be Crittall-style, fluted or the emerging trend, etched.

GO ECO Sustainability within bathrooms has never been more important than it is right now and with the cost of living also rising exponentially, it’s important to consider the ways in which you can minimise excess energy and water consumption within the bathroom. One way to reduce water usage is to choose a shower head fitted with a flow restrictor. Luckily, this option doesn’t mean you end up with a substandard shower as each flow restrictor shower has been carefully designed to reduce water consumption but still offer a pleasurable showering experience. Alternatively, you can opt for a technology-led shower which enriches shower water with air droplets, making for an invigorating shower experience.

that could be paired with lots of different hues. “For us, we have previously struggled to sell this tone, so it will be interesting to see how it does next year. It will certainly complement our collections, such as “Secret Garden” Tara Rodrigues, award winning interior designer, founder of TR Interiors and winner of Channel 4’s £250,000 Big Interiors Battle, said: “A revival of peach is long overdue. it with rich dark hues of blues and greens to create elegant and bold schemes. It’s a great way to soften a scheme making a home feel warm and inviting. For those that don’t love pink, peach is a great compromise in a family home adding a touch of femininity without being overpowering. I’d mix peach into a contemporary kitchen or living room scheme for a warm pop of colour to elevate a space.” Victoria Yardley, founder of eco-paint brand Victory Colours, said: “It’s a lovely colour and we are seeing a lot of peachy hues at the moment, it is a very similar colour to our “The Donald” which has been top of our colour charts for weeks now. “We think it is a great choice. We have seen a huge trend towards peachy hues and terracottas in the past few months so this wasn’t an unexpected choice from Pantone. “Pantone’s 2024 Color of the Year, Peach Fuzz, heralds a serene shift in interior design trends. This versatile hue inspires a subtle optimism, creating an inviting atmosphere that soothes and uplifts, making any room feel cosy and inviting.” Textile designer Jan Constantine, of Jan Constantine, said: “Peach Fuzz is a really beautiful colour which feels so right for now. It exudes warmth and cosiness, feels safe and is the perfect back drop shade to saturate a room. Its soft tones work perfectly with other warm hues from the same side of the spectrum – pink, terracotta, orange, yellow and red. Peach Fuzz also works well as a dramatic contrast to black and/or cream, hinting back at the most iconic colours of the Art Deco movement. Zoe Eaton, Creative Director at Ohpopsi, said: “Soft and feminine, peach fuzz lifts the spirits. A refreshing tone that will balance any interior space and work with a multitude of different palettes, it’s accessible, friendly and emits an abundance of warmth. It’s a really lovely positive tone and is a colour for everyone!

POOL?

I

f you are dreaming of having your own swimming pool, decide why you want a pool, how it will be used, by whom and whether you want to swim every day. An indoor pool can be used all year round, although if you prefer an outdoor pool, you can extend its use by installing an attractive pool enclosure so you can swim during the winter. Indoor pools offer complete climate control, which makes it easy to maintain a comfortable pool temperature no matter the time of year. Garden pools are ideal if you love to be outdoors and want to create an oasis for entertaining and relaxing away from the house. All pools need space for the plant room equipment, so do note that the space for an indoor

100 JANUARY 2024

pool plant room must be larger than an outdoor one because it must accommodate the ventilation unit. Building an outdoor pool is less expensive than an indoor one because you do not need to install a ventilation unit which is essential for an indoor pool. A new indoor pool tends to be built as part of a bigger building project, either a new build property or a major refurbishment of an existing residence. Typically, an indoor pool installation within a new build or home refurbishment will take 12 to 18 months to complete. Usually, a major contractor oversees the entire project. The pool construction will be just one element of the overall build process, so it will take longer to complete than a discrete installation because the pool contractor must work around other phases of the project. Building a standalone outdoor pool is much faster, around three months and if the garden is easily accessible, there will be little disruption to your home and routine. Running costs for outdoor pools are generally lower than for indoor pools because they are closed during the winter and require fewer services when closed. It is advisable to budget for professional servicing on either type of pool once a week or fortnightly to keep the pool in excellent condition. The choice between indoor and outdoor pools should be based on factors such as your budget, property situation, personal preferences, and intended use. Once you have decided, hire a reputable pool contractor, and work closely to create your dream pool. londonswimmingpools.com

MAKE A SPLASH with the latest bathroom trends for 2024

B

athroom design schemes are typically built to last, but that doesn’t mean that the space can’t be stylish – it’s possible to create a showstopping showering space no matter the theme. Here, Ashley Cooper, marketing director at Triton Showers, outlines the top bathroom trends to accentuate your shower space as we head into the new year: “We’ve seen a lot of changes to interior design over the last year and this won’t be slowing down as we move into the new year. The key focus for 2024 trends is creating a refreshed bathroom space with a focus on bold colours, patterns and the latest technology.

MINIMALISTIC STYLINGS “The minimalist bathroom has undeniably been one of the most popular trends in recent years, and it doesn’t show any signs of backing down in 2024. This style is easy to live with thanks to its versatility and ability to create calmness and tranquillity while providing that spa-at-home look. “Avoid picking the purest whites as these can often make a space look clinical. Instead, opt for off-whites and surfaces with texture and finishes that mimic natural stone materials such as marble, concrete, and sandstone. The key is to keep the core colours neutral and play around with finishes and shapes. “Black fixtures and fittings partner perfectly with these elements and help tie the look together, whilst adding contrast. Alternatively, introduce black into the scheme through a rimmed glass or crittall-style shower screen, mirrors, storage solutions and wall lights. Or if you’re feeling bold opt for a black electric shower unit as a focal point, combining contemporary looks with an efficient way to heat and use water – saving you money.

COTTAGECORE “Leaning into wholesome simplicity, Cottagecore is a trend that first entered the interiors world a few years ago but is set to take off in bathroom spaces as we head into next year. The trend celebrates

cosy and vintage elements, promoting relaxation and a sense of well-being. “Start by creating the perfect colour palette with soft, pastel hues, such as pale pinks and yellows and muted blues. Pair this base with floral prints in the form of wallpaper or artwork for a feminine, romantic feel. “Moving onto the smaller details, style with vintage furniture and décor such as wicker baskets for storage and patterned towels, you can even display masonry jars on open shelving to fill with toiletries. Consider retro lighting fixtures, chandeliers and wall sconces to add a cosy feel – warm lit bulbs will enhance this feeling. Pull the design together with rustic flooring or tiles – wood or stone finishes work well with this trend, but you can opt for metro tiles to add an edge. “Finish the look with simple silver or chrome brassware, along with a vintage-look shower that will perfectly complement the wider scheme. To create a more homely look, add personal touches such as plates and framed pictures to the walls, as this will help bring the look together.

EARTHY TONES “Taking things back to their roots, this trend incorporates tones that reflect the natural world and 110 JANUARY 2024

brings a sense of serenity into your bathroom space. You can incorporate the look into a variety of designs thanks to its neutral nature, from modern and minimalist to traditional and rustic. It’s a truly versatile choice that creates timeless appeal. “Earth-inspired hues have a natural appeal in the bathroom as they create an inviting and serene atmosphere while providing a neutral colour base that avoids being one-dimensional. Don’t shy away from experimenting with textures and materials with this trend, as it will help add interest. “Depending on personal preference you can work with either a warm or cool palette to achieve an earthy look. Consider traditional warm colours like terracotta and hickory or delve to the other end of the colour wheel with muted tones like sage green, cashmere, taupe and stone grey. “There’s so much flexibility with how you can welcome these natural tones into your bathroom, earthy cabinetry is a great option, or accessories can provide a solution that is easy to rework if you fancy a change at a later date. Wicker and rattan furniture, wood surfaces and greenery are great ways to build the scheme. Or keep the look contemporary and sleek by opting for an earthy colour across walls, shelving and sink areas for a monochromatic, minimalistic finish.

DOPAMINE COLOURS “Bathrooms in 2024 will not be confined to clinical white tiles, instead you’ll see designs that boast confidence and are decorated in vibrant tones. Primary colours are back, and here to brighten your day. “If you want a bathroom that instantly puts a smile on your face, then injecting bold colours into your design is guaranteed to make you feel cheery no matter the time of day. This scheme is perfect for a family bathroom and will make shower time fun for all. “Funky tile layouts, pops of colour, geometric towels and rainbow accessories create a technicoloured bathroom delight. If you’re feeling bold, introduce murals to your walls, such as a door lip in a bright hue – adding this wave design will test the creative boundaries of the bathroom. “This scheme isn’t for the faint-hearted. If you’re feeling cautious, start with a clean base of white walls and a matte white shower, then go wild with accessories, which can easily be refreshed should you wish.”

BIOPHILIC DESIGN “With hybrid working very much an integrated part of everyday life, many may find themselves spending increasingly more time inside their homes. So, it comes as no surprise that there will be a continued focus on bringing the outside in over the next year. “Adding a touch of nature to your bathroom design can provide a feeling of calm, acting as a sanctuary and providing a space for waking yourself up in the morning and winding down at the end of the day. Drawing inspiration from the outdoors, this trend incorporates organic wood features complemented by muted, natural hues and greenery to create a space that exudes serenity. “Opt for wood or stone look wall panels or flooring, partnered with an organic palette of greens, blues and browns for a touch of the natural world. Plants are of course a must, not only do they fit the scheme but they can also help make the space feel fresh and improve air quality within your bathroom. Consider using open shelving to store towels and toiletries to create a more open and organic feel in your bathroom. “Many underestimate the effect that lighting can have in a bathroom. When creating a biophilic design, try to maximise natural light with sheer or minimal window dressings – not only will this help to create an open, inviting space flooded with natural light, but also provide a view of the outdoors. tritonshowers.co.uk
