F
rom 21 May 2016 – 24 July 2016 The Lightbox gallery and museum will present ‘The Road to Abstraction: The Ingram Collection’, a new exhibition sourced from The Ingram Collection of Modern British and Contemporary Art which will explore how key 20th century artists embraced new forms of representation and developed a ‘language of abstraction’. The exhibition will chart the development of how a group of Modern artists gradually shifted away from traditional figurative forms of representation towards interpreting the world through a series of shapes, lines and colours. This enabled them to express their ideas, values and principles through non-conformist means which in turn created a new and exciting genre of art. Drawing from works by The Seven and Five Society, The Crypt Group, Unit One and the Penwith Society of Arts, the exhibition will also track the progression of individual artists such as
1 2 MAY 2 0 1 6
Henry Moore, Edward Burra, Barbara Hepworth, Bridget Riley, William Gear, Ben Nicholson, Allen Jones, John Tunnard, and William Turnball.
Highlights of the Exhibition
‘The Road to Abstraction’ will focus on the works of Modern British artists who moved fluidly from traditional techniques and representations to experimenting with the more expressive style of abstraction. The works will date from the 1940s through to the 1980s with both 2D and 3D works to illustrate how the shift in style developed over time. Highlights of the exhibition include: William Turnbull (1922-2012) Heavy Insect, 1949, bronze This early piece of abstract sculpture was created in the late 1940s whilst Turnball was living in Paris. His inspiration came from the skewed perspective of lying in the grass on a hot day and seeing insects from a new close-up perspective that made them seem big and odd and ‘a bit like a dinosaur’.

The Ingram Collection Bridget Riley (b. 1931), Woman at Tea-table, not dated, coloured crayons and pastel Bridget Riley was one of the first women to develop an abstract style in the mid-late 1950s following a turbulent emotional period of her life. This undated piece by Riley is a key work in her transition from a figurative to an abstract artist. Later works from the 1960s onwards would see her fully move away from recognisable forms to bold geometric ‘Op Art’ prints that were designed to play tricks on the eye. William Gear (1915-1997) Red Landscape, c. 1965, oil on canvas William Gear typifies the journey of abstract artists in the 20th century. In his early works of the 1930s and 40s he experimented with colour and pen and ink drawings which progressed to more avant-garde monochrome abstract blocks in the 1950s before moving back to colour and a more playful style in the 1960s as represented by this piece ‘Red Landscape’. John Tunnard (1900-1971) Messenger, 1969, oil, tempera, sand and pencil on board This work by Tunnard demonstrates his interest in linking science and the surreal through abstract art. The central image of the piece, a large satellite dish, points skyward towards the heavens, which was resonant at the time as the piece was created in 1969, the year of the first moon landing. Allen Jones (b. 1937) Odalisque (Seat Sculpture), 1984, painted steel The piece ‘Odalisque’ by Allen Jones is a slightly later work that reflects how the abstract movement had progressed. Primarily known as a Pop artist, Jones wrote that he had ‘wanted to find a new language for representation’ which is typified by works such as this abstract sculpture.

he world’s No1 Frank Sinatra, Stephen Triffitt, is coming to town to celebrate the golden anniversary of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ most famous recording – Sinatra Live at the Sands. A brand-new production called Frankly Sinatra features many of the songs from the classic album, performed just the way they were back in 1966. Regarded as the definitive Sinatra live performance, the album was Frank’s first commercially-released live recording, packed with 22 tracks including many of his best-known hits. Frankly Sinatra’s producers say that authenticity can be assured: star of the show – Stephen Triffitt – has himself enjoyed three seasons at Las Vegas’ Sands Casino portraying Frank. Featuring the swing, swagger and the velvet vocals of Frank Sinatra in concert, Stephen Triffitt is acclaimed worldwide as the master of his craft. He created the role of Ol’ Blue Eyes in the original West End production of The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas that toured the USA, Canada and Europe. The lavish production is brought to the stage by Easy Theatres, the theatre show specialists responsible for hit touring stage productions like Magic of Motown, Thank You for the Music, An Evening of Burlesque and A Night of Dirty Dancing. The company’s MD, Michael Taylor, says Sinatra’s golden anniversary is to be celebrated in “swinging style” with a nationwide tour of brand-new stage show Frankly Sinatra in 2016. “There’s no better Sinatra,” says Michael. “Stephen Triffitt has sold out the London Palladium twice and the Royal Festival Hall with solo concert shows. “In Frankly Sinatra he skilfully dips in and out of character

to tell the fascinating tale of the greatest vocalist and most charismatic performer of our time.” The critics agree. The London Evening Standard describes Stephen’s resemblance to Sinatra as ”unsettlingly perfect”. With sculpted hair, twinkling blue eyes, and shiny black patent leather shoes, Stephen is famed for performing classic hits Fly Me to the Moon; Mack the Knife; New York, New York; My Way; That’s Life; Under My Skin; Lady is a Tramp; My Kind of Town; All the Way and Luck Be a Lady with all Frank’s laid back charm. Michael says: “Stephen not only walks the walk, he talks the talk. Combining delicious vocals with a playful, laid-back stage presence, he faithfully recreates Frank’s trademark stage persona with consummate ease.” Backed by the sound of big band swing, Frankly Sinatra brings the Chairman of the Board to town to celebrate the golden anniversary of Sinatra Live at the Sands with StephenTriffitt, described by the show’s creators as “frankly the best thing since Sinatra himself ”. hoosing a school and navigating your way through the prep school years can be a challenging and confusing time. Society and the media often place much emphasis on academic and instant results and less attention to the pastoral development of the whole child. A couple of years ago, in response to questions parents asked throughout their child’s prep school journey, Merinda D’Aprano, Head of Notre Dame Prep School began writing an educational blog. The blog became a book, and joining ranks with Elizabeth O’Shea, a leading parenting expert, they have written a comprehensive guide to navigating the prep school years both educationally and pastorally. The first part of the ceremony involved the laying and blessing of a time capsule containing various aspects of current life at St George’s, which will be opened in 50 years’ time in 2066. The Cardinal was then shown around ‘The Ark’, unveiling a plaque and seeing the location of the new Nursery building next door for 90 girls and boys, which opens soon. INVESTING IN AGRICULTURE: sustainability and the next generation By Claudia Quiroz, Quilter Cheviot’s Executive Director of sustainable investing
A
griculture is not a market for the faint hearted, with volatility inherent in both the creation of the product, and how the market reacts to it. Farmers can’t reliably predict, for example, how much wheat they are likely to produce in a given year. Due to the impact of supply and demand on prices, they find it difficult to predict what prices they will receive for their product either. So far, so capricious. And even though their world may be a million miles away from the City, fluctuations in currency will also have a huge impact on the bottom line. For example, the gods of good fortune can be aligned, with favourable growing conditions, an optimal
needs these innovations quite like agriculture. It is a very thirsty industry, currently consuming more than two-thirds of the world’s fresh water for both irrigation and livestock rearing. For example, cattle consume around 95 to190 litres of water per day, compared to approximately 150 litres per day per person in the developed world and cereal crop farmers using conventional methods of irrigation can waste up to 40% of the water used, especially in developing countries. This issue is driving utilities and regulators to explore ways of maximising water supply, such as new types of infrastructure (e.g. reservoirs, water pipelines and
However, some of farming’s vulnerabilities as an industry can actually lead to opportunities for the investor crop and a level of global supply that will ensure the market is not flooded by product causing prices to lessen, when political or financial events - such as terrorism, or a major corporation folding - will cause a drop in the pound, or for its strength to increase relative to other cropproducing nations, meaning suddenly a farmer’s prices are less attractive and they either have greater difficulty selling their crops, or must accept that their profit margin will be greatly eroded. It is, then, a somewhat precarious investment category. However, some of farming’s vulnerabilities as an industry can actually lead to opportunities for the investor. For example, ‘one to watch’ in the agricultural economy is the provision of water: population is growing driving higher water demand, just as changing weather patterns lead to scarcity of fresh water across the world. And no industry
desalination) and new operating models which can help drive greater levels of water efficiency. For example, a US-based farming supplier has developed central pivot mechanised irrigation with very low rates (around 5%) of water. Similarly, because of the caprices of the agricultural environment, many farmers are adding a side-line in the production of renewable energy and are welcoming investment. Figures from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) showed that in 2010, almost 5% of commercial holdings were producing renewable energy on their farm, for example by harnessing slurries, food and plant waste to produce bio-gas, and using willow, wood waste and crops to produce electricity. Other farmers are exploring the possibilities of getting the most out of their land by generating solar farms. As the agricultural industry seeks new ways of operating in, and catering to, a carbon-constrained world, we expect innovations like these to see favourable returns on investment in the coming years. Investors can also be heartened that in using their portfolio to support sustainability, and specifically sustainability in agriculture, they are not only helping to protect their own future, but that of the planet too. Well, it is a weekend of fantastic motoring action and entertainment that takes place every June at Brooklands celebrating all that made the world famous track in Weybridge a household name. This year it is on 18th and 19th June and in celebration of the Museum being open to the public for 25 years, there is a special silver award in the Councours d’Elégance competition. Among the guests Ian introduced to the Duke were Barrie and Margaret Arminson, whose Kingfisher Farmshop in Abinger has championed Silent Pool Gin from the beginning. “We have sold hundreds and hundreds of bottles,” Barrie told him.

As well as offering effective body contouring solutions, Light Touch Clinic has a range of treatments to make you look and feel fab this summer.
How Does It Work?
CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling, also called Cryolipolysis, to permanently destroy fat cells. By exposing fat cells to low temperatures, they become unstable and die. This innovative treatment can be used to reduce stubborn fat all over the body. Popular treatment areas include love handles, stomach, inner thighs and moobs. Using advanced Freeze Detect technology, CoolSculpting constantly monitors your skin’s temperature to prevent it from damage. If it gets too cold, the machine will automatically switch off. Over the coming weeks, your body will naturally remove the fat cells, resulting in a slimmer figure for you!

Monomania
make-up A
s seen on Rihanna and model of the moment Gigi Hadid, the monochromatic look involves using one colour on the eyes, lips and cheeks, creating a beautifully ‘pulled together’ look. “It’s foolproof when you are super-busy and unable to do a full face of make-up,” says Ruby Hammer, MBE, international make-up artist and make-up salon creative director for Urban Retreat at Harrods. “Plus, it takes the guess work out of co-ordinating your look!” But it’s important to choose the best colour for you, of course. Here’s the expert advice on four shades that will have you catching monomania in no time...
THE BRONZE AGE
Tying in with this fashion’s current Nineties obsession, brown shades are best “if you have a medium to dark skin tone, and either blue or green/hazel eyes”, according to Carla Wall, head make-up artist for Hourglass. “But always go for warmer tones; think bronze, golden and deep copper shades, as anything cooler can wash out the skin. “On the eyes, use a palette that has a combination of satin, shimmer and matte colours. If you want to make the eyes 7 2 MAY 2 0 1 6

more feline, use a darker tone on the outer corners in a V shape, and a lighter colour in the tear duct. “Cheeks and skin should be enhanced with a bronzer, and if you have intensified the eyes, lips should be kept minimal and glossy. “Hourglass Extreme Sheer Lip Gloss in Imagine and Ignite are a perfect complement for this. If you have kept the eyes neutral, then go for a stronger brown-toned lipstick, a la Rihanna.” Hourglass Modernist Eyeshadow Palette in Infinity, £56 (www.spacenk.com); Hourglass Creme-to-powder Bronze Duo Light, £40 (www.spacenk.com); MAC Eye Shadow in Texture, £13 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk); Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Colour in Laura Mercier Creme Dulce De Leche, £22 Smooth Lip Colour in Dulce De Leche, (www.johnlewis.com) available from John Lewis

Tried & tested Katie Wright experiences bath time magic, with Lush’s new spa treatment
“I
begin my treatment, which is inspired by the healing waters of Bath, seated in a candlelit room in Lush’s country cottage-style spa. Wrapped in a wonderfully fluffy robe, I’m treated to a head, neck and shoulder massage, then my therapist leaves the room and I climb into a deep, warm bath that’s already been drawn. A super-sized bathbomb fizzes away and I hear the legend of Prince Bladud (believed to have discovered said waters). Prompted at the end of the story, I get out of the bath, dry off and lie down on my side under a sheet on the massage table, snuggled up to a long cushion. My therapist returns to give me a thorough (but thoroughly relaxing) ‘sideline’ massage, soundtracked by speciallycomposed music (more rousing than your usual spa pan pipes). The whole experience is utterly blissful. If you struggle to find the time to bathe at home, this is a fabulous 75-minute indulgence that will leave you feeling calm and delightfully sleepy.” Lush Tales of Bath, £110, is available in all Lush Spas, in eight locations across the UK (www.lush.com)

Hourglass Modernist Eyeshadow Palette in Infinity, available from spacenk.com
IN THE PINK
“A fair-skinned complexion, blonde with blue eyes, traditionally suits a pink look. However, depending on the shade, you can make it right for any skin tone,” says Hammer. “For darker skin tones, you would need to move away from a pale pink and opt for something that’s vibrant and has a real kick. “Pick a soft colour for your cheeks and eyes, something very feminine - almost peachy - and then up the colour on your lips for maximum impact.” And lookout for multi-purpose cream products that you can double up with: “Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge comes in many shades and is fabulous as dual purpose. I also love Laura Mercier’s Creme Cheek Colour, as it’s long-lasting and allows you to build on coverage for a soft, velvety finish.” Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks in Raspberry, £19.50 (www.bobbibrown.co.uk); Laura Mercier Creme Cheek Colour in Blaze, £21.50 (www.urbanretreat.co.uk)
CORAL RIFF
Orange shades, particularly soft coral, are really flattering on paler complexions. “I would use these tones on someone who has a fair to medium skin tone. The warm, brighter tones complement deep brown eyes beautifully,” advises Wall. “Keep eyes minimal, and focus on cheeks and lips. Use a sheer wash of colour on the eyes that you can double up as a blush. “Using a lipstick as a blush is also fun. Pat it gently on the lips for a more sheer stain effect, and use your fingertips to apply a small amount on the cheeks, to give a nice flushed effect.” Hourglass Opaque Rouge Lipstick in Riviera, £23 (www.spacenk.com); Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss in Folly, £26 (www.urbanretreat.co.uk)
THE GOLD STANDARD
Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss in Folly, available from Urban Retreat
Foil-like gold lips were seen on the Prada spring catwalk, but for a mono metallic, look you want a warm, subtle shimmer all over. “People with olive, bronzed and darkertoned skins, who are brunette with brown eyes, match perfectly with a gold glistening finish,” says Hammer. “A clear lip gloss with gold in it is the best way to take this look from catwalk to everyday wear, and you can use a hint on your cheeks, and a hint on the inner corners of your eyes or brow bones, too. I love this look for summer or on a night out. “Gold powder products can double up well on eyes and cheeks, while cream products are ideal for cheeks and lips - you may just need to add a balm over the top to keep lips moist and glossy.” RMS Lip2Cheek, £30 (www.urbanretreat.co.uk); Surratt Artistique Eyeshadow in Cuivre, £16 (www.urbanretreat.co.uk). TIME TO PLANT YOUR
SUMMER
BULBS S
ummer bulbs are ideal for patio containers and add beautiful colour to borders without taking up much space. Buy dry bulbs when they’re as fresh as possible. Summer bulbs are usually on sale from early spring onwards when they are dormant. Healthy bulbs will feel firm and show no signs of mould or damage. Look for bigger bulbs as they’ll produce bigger blooms.
When to plant
Summer bulbs, such as alliums, agapanthus and cannas, should be planted in spring, when the soil is beginning to warm up. The ideal soil temperature is 13°C as in colder soil bulbs will not start to grow and may rot. Aim to plant dry bulbs directly after purchase. Bulbs you have stored over winter should be planted at the end of their dormant season.
Type of soil
Different bulbs need different soil types but summer bulbs generally like a warm, sunny position. Free-draining soil is important as bulbs are susceptible to rotting. If you have heavy, clay soil dig in one to two buckets of coarse sand per square metre. Adding well-rotted organic matter will also improve drainage.
Different bulbs need different soil types but summer bulbs generally like a warm, sunny position How to plant
• Dig individual holes for each bulb or a trench for many bulbs. Place bulbs in the holes without pushing down hard. • Make sure the growing point is pointing upwards and cover with soil and firm. • Pot-grown bulbs may be planted directly in their desired position in a border where you want them to flower. This is known as planting ‘in the green’. • For these plants make a hole wide and deep enough to allow room for the roots to spread and plant the bulb at the same depth as before. • Many summer bulbs are ideal for growing in patio containers, especially tender species. These can then be lifted in winter and stored.
Planting depth and spacing
Use the bulb as a guide and plant it two or three times its depth. Space them approximately two to three bulb widths apart. 6 MAY 2 0 1 6

This will be our ninth year at the show, and it’s always a highlight of our calendar. Of course, this year marks the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth, and I’m sure there will be many splendid tributes to her royal majesty at the show. At Barlow Tyrie, we passed our 90th a few years back (not individually, I hasten to add, but as a company), and we’re looking forward to celebrating our centenary in 2020. In the meantime, we’re concentrating on developing new products, hoping to add to our 18 awards for design excellence. This has been a hugely successful exhibition, running from January to April at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and featuring works by Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Pissarro, Manet, Sargent, Kandinsky, Van Gogh, Matisse, Klimt, and Klee. Those of you who had the chance to visit will have noticed that many of the individual ‘rooms’ making up the gallery space also contained teak garden furniture. This was an assortment of Barlow Tyrie Glenham teak seats and armchairs, and three Balmoral tables – 29 pieces in all, and was intended to give visitors the opportunity to sit and reflect on the paintings as if in a real garden setting. Exhibition designer Robert Carsen said: “I had the idea to use garden benches very early on. You can’t treat the floors nor the ceiling, so furniture seemed a good way of doing it, and we were very fortunate that Barlow Tyrie – the company that makes this beautiful teak furniture – generously

Whichever materials we use, we make sure to source the best available, and all our furniture is produced using the highest standards of craftsmanship. These are beautiful pieces, built to last. The main criterion is always to combine form and function with manufacturing expertise, and so create pleasing designs with good ergonomic performance, all to make outdoor living as comfortable as it is stylish. Hazlemere Windows still going strong 31 years on 9 2 MAY 2 0 1 6

ack in April 2015, Hazlemere Window Company Ltd celebrated 30 years in business as independent double glazing manufacturers and installers. Another year on and this family owned and run business continues to invest in the latest most thermally efficient products, high tech machinery, expert staff and a long term stable future for all its customers and employees. During Spring 2016 Hazlemere Windows started a major refurbishment of their 8,000 square feet High Wycombe Showroom in Wellington Road, on Cressex Business Park, adjacent to their 38,000 square foot factory. The work is being done in several phases to ensure the Showroom stays open 7 days a week, and inconveniences customers as little as possible. They have already installed as part of this updating of products the latest slimmer
Yet another new product that is on demonstration display within the High Wycombe Showroom is a two section UPVC casement window with a “floating” mullion, enabling both sections to fully open to provide an extra wide opening like French doors, which is sometimes the only way smaller apertures in bedrooms can achieve fire egress that is legally required on replacement windows under the current Building Regulations. Hazlemere have ordered a solid roof conservatory which will be built in the High Wycombe Showroom during 2016, as the level of interest in this product has increased in recent years. Home owners need to be mindful that every solid roof conservatory or orangery falls under Building Regulations which should be obtained prior to commencing construction, as in many cases planning permission for solid roof conservatories is also required. More than 31 years on Hazlemere continues to invest in its future, showrooms (the other being in Welwyn Garden City) and vehicle fleet, which now numbers more than 20 vehicles, the very latest edition being a low emissions Luton delivery van. Hazlemere Window Company Ltd is fortunate to have had such loyal customers over the last 30+ years, but also been able to retain its skilled and experienced workforce, employing its own designers, surveyors, ground workers, fabricators, fitters and service engineers. CHAPLINS IMM COLOGNE TREND REPORT 2016
Going Back to the Future It’s no secret that the furniture world loves a good blast from the past when it comes to introducing ‘new trends’ and at this year’s IMM Cologne Furniture Fair it was no different. There is something very comforting about a familiar design or colour scheme, which transports us back to simpler times. So how did this translate into the collections of our biggest brands? With all this in mind we saw many of our biggest brands celebrating their heritage and values within the new collections. Rediscovered classics of mid-century modernity were paired on the stands with new designs covered in materials such as rattan and bold velvets, displaying a strong association with the Seventies – a trend that has filtered into interiors from the world of fashion. So what pieces caught our eye in Cologne? Going out is the new staying in so why not do both? This year B&B Italia reconfirmed the importance of good design when it comes to our outdoor spaces. Gio, designed by Antonio Citterio, is a new outdoor collection with a contemporary classic look dedicated to living in the open air. From the special teak finish in antique grey, which gives the wood a particular lived-in aspect to the accent orange webbing, this range has the same style, quality and comfort as the indoor collections which B&B Italia have brought to us during their 50 year history. ‘Plumy – comfort with a capital C and relaxation with a capital R. This year we saw the reissue of an ‘iconic’ Ligne Roset sofa called Plumy. At first glance, we thought 1 0 2 MAY 2 0 1 6
it may have been a new addition to the collection with its trendy design and new levels of comfort but we were mistaken, this sofa is an Eighties baby that hasn’t aged a bit! Not only were we impressed by the aesthetics of the piece, the option of angling the back cushions and unfolding the seat cushions made it possible to create a chaise lounge position – retro relaxation at its finest! Multi-Lite embraces the golden era of Danish design With its characteristic shape of two opposing mobile outer shades, Multi-Lite enables you to create your own personal installation with a wide range of lighting options. By individually rotating the shades, the Multi-Lite Pendant Lamp can be transformed into multiple combinations where the light can be directed upwards, downwards or exude an asymmetrical art light. This light is perfect for those who get easily bored and like to keep reinventing their space. Liven up your living space with clashing colours and vibrant patterns The Webby benches with their frames in solid walnut and buttoned seats allow you to experiment with bold and brash colour clashes (another fashion trend which will make its mark on interiors this year). These statement pieces look particularly
effective when selecting contrasting buttons. A new dining table design which doesn’t lose sight of the past With table 1060, Thonet have managed to design a modern piece of furniture that unifies the three themes of living, working and the brand’s 200 year heritage. Designer Jorre van Ast comments “It was a special challenge to design something new and, at the same time, to not lose sight of the company’s past. During the development process, it was therefore obvious to concentrate on one of Thonet’s key competencies: bending solid wood. It was my intention to design a companion for the fantastic Thonet chairs.” We think the table is a massive success, blending the company’s proud bentwood tradition with a new lightweight, contemporary design, perfect for both dining rooms and working environments. A world of design on your doorstep Through our commitment to detail and sourcing the right products, we to continue to drive design forward by showcasing the very best design houses and locating the products that fulfil our clients need for a timeless yet contemporary interior. We look forward to presenting all these lovely new pieces to you over the coming weeks and months. Living in Luxury
C
ommissioned by their client to create a glamourous, inviting and luxurious home on the prestigious private estate of St Georges Hill in Weybridge, the design team at Concept Interiors, led by Design Director Samantha Morgan, began working on the schemes whilst the build was still in its initial stages. This was to ensure that the design for the entire property flowed seamlessly throughout each of the spaces, whilst still giving each room its own identity. Using a combination of sumptuous textures and sophisticated finishes they have created a finished property that is luxurious and impacting, yet manages to remain warm and inviting despite its large scale. The Kitchen Family Room mixes gentle grey tones with tactile and elegant fabrics, working beautifully with the sleek kitchen cabinets and statement stone island. Cleverly concealed behind a kitchen door is the leisure complex, featuring an envy inducing bespoke bar and wine room with back lit glass & stone, an entertaining space, gym, spa & pool. Each space has been designed to have its own wow factor, from the Master Bedroom, which takes its design inspiration from the iconic Chanel quilting, to the ground floor cloakroom with its two meter high cascading crystal wall lights. The Drawing Room has an icy elegance, featuring panelled mirror walls, bespoke high gloss furniture and venetian glass lights. Concept Interiors have effortlessly

balanced the cool tones and mirrored surfaces with soft velvets and stunning silks, resulting in a truly breath-taking room that oozes glamour and sophistication. The study is unashamedly dark and masculine, using hints of gold to contrast against the black finishes and the book matched marble flooring. The design team chose to use antique mirror and polished gold detailing in the bespoke joinery to add more drama and finished off the space by tastefully accessorising in a combination of black and gold. In stark contrast to this, Her Master En-suite is overtly feminine. The bath tub is upholstered in white ostrich leather with Swarovski crystal buttoning and finished with a Rose Ogee pink marble top. The large walk in shower has a crystal chandelier shower head and the bathroom fixtures have crystal details. The glamour is continued in the stunning curved, gloss white vanity unit with leather panels and stone worktop and the vanity mirror is equally striking, with its leather and chrome detailing and crystal wall lights, all enhanced with a gorgeous pink marble wall frame.

O
nce you’ve learnt to play with the options, there’s no limit to the effects you can enjoy, but with such a huge array of lighting on offer, the right choice for your home may not always be glaringly obvious. Here, experts reveal their illuminating advice on ‘seeing the light’, and the top trends for 2016...
BIG & BOLD Industrial style is vying with innovative lighting design for attention - and size does matter for today’s lamps, says Mark Holloway, 44, owner of lighting and furniture specialists, Holloways of Ludlow. SWITCH ON: To large lights - chandeliers, drum pendants and giant floor lamps - and materials such as wood veneers, concrete and hand-blown glass. LEADING LIGHTS: Solid, down-to-earth style is embodied in an Old School Electric Oval Bulkhead Light, in a brass finish, £55. Diva Floor Lamp, £1,749, combines a mouthblown inner glass globe with an exterior made from 32 individual pieces of wood, and is available in laminated oak or walnut.
LIGHTBULB MOMENT Decorative light bulbs, glass shades and cluster pendants are stars of this year’s light range, says Kirstin White, 29, lighting buyer at Habitat. SWITCH ON: To feature lighting - oversized floor lamps through to decorative wall lights - as a form of functional art, which will make a statement in any room. LEADING LIGHTS: Decorative light bulbs, in all shapes and sizes, can be an easy way to add interest, with a Calex bulb, from £10, enclosing a cluster of LED lights, particularly eye-catching. Make a statement with a Bulle Triple Cluster Glass Drop Pendant, £225, (available February), or a Tessellate Gold Metal LED Decorative Wall Light, £275. 1 0 8 MAY 2 0 1 6
MAJOR IN METAL Metallics, especially copper’s warm tones, combine with light to give a warm glow, and will take centre stage in this year’s collections, says Victoria Atkin, 45, co-founder of Atkin And Thyme, specialists in hand-crafted and artisan homeware. SWITCH ON: To pieces made in a traditional way by skilled craftsmen, which bring authenticity to an interior, and embrace transparency with clear glass bases or shades. LEADING LIGHTS: A Castello Three Cluster Ceiling Pendant is a beauty as well as a bargain, as it’s currently reduced from £49 to £29. Floor lamps are versatile, because they can be moved to highlight a feature or area at will, and a Hector Angled Floor Lamp in Copper, £159, is handsome as well as practical. If you love the see-through look, a Kensington Hand Blown Glass Table Lamp With Black Shade, £99, is super-smart.
COLOUR & CALM More use of colour, and co-ordinating the style of a room’s lights, are two strong features highlighted by Nadia McCowan Hill, 32, style expert at online interiors company, Wayfair. SWITCH ON: To tailoring lighting to make the most of a room’s size and shape. Up-lighting makes a space feel larger, low-hung pendants give an impression of height and clusters of lights add cosiness. LEADING LIGHTS: Colour and contemporary style combine in a 10 Light Cascade Pendant by Endon Lighting, £249.60, which has a cluster of multi-coloured tear-shaped glass shades. A 1 Light Mini Pendant by Pacific Lifestyle, £42.99, is covered in faux silk, available in cream or grey and has the appearance of a flower opening. Satisfy your desire to be a star in your own show with a Hollywood Directors Table Lamp by House Additions, in black and gunmetal, £67.99 (down from £79.99).

And the bedrooms are all a very good size too. This is an excellent alternative to a much smaller home in our nearby commuting destinations.” One Eight Zero features an impressive mix of four and five bedroom luxury houses, and all are within easy reach of convenient transport links towards Surrey and the capital. Each home has been designed to take advantage of the views and provide privacy for residents and all overlook the public open space. “Those moving in to new homes at One Eight Zero will enjoy Bedhampton Hill’s close proximity to both countryside and coast, whilst benefitting from easy access to all local amenities,” said Michelle. “There are some great schools right on the doorstep and the south coast has so much to offer - with Bedhampton Hill and Langstone Harbour no exception. The area plays hosts to numerous sailing clubs and is the perfect choice for anyone keen to take up yachting, canoeing or windsurfing. “We’re seeing many more buyers who may previously have opted for much smaller properties further north along the A3 - and we love to see people’s reactions when they visit us here and see just how much house they can get for their hardearned cash. “These beautiful homes won’t be available for very long though, I urge anyone interested in taking a closer look at One Eight Zero to come and visit us soon.”
