party on the Hyperion Lawn. Images taken of Vogue, captured at the racecourse are themed around the event’s tagline ‘The Supreme Test of the Racehorse and the Wardrobe’. This emphasises the two key aspects of the festival, the best horses in the world competing on the track and racegoers striving for high style stakes off the track. This year’s fashion shoot was specifically styled using affordable fashion, drawing inspiration from vintage and charity shops as well as the high street to show how racegoers can put together a fabulous outfit at minimal cost. Vogue said “I’ve absolutely loved the shoot styling this year and it’s inspired me to try to incorporate a bit of vintage into my Investec Ladies Day look, combined with high street fashion to keep it affordable. I’m new to vintage shopping and am definitely ready to start hunting!” Investec Ladies Day is famous for its celebration of females both on and off the course, combining high style stakes along with attracting some of the top middle-distance 3-year-old fillies in the country for the feature race of the day, The Investec Oaks. Talking about the Style Awards and atmosphere Vogue added, “I’m really excited to see everyone’s looks. I’ll be searching for the most well put together outfit, from the headwear right down to the shoes. I’m incredibly excited about the day; it’s so much fun from the moment you arrive.” The Investec Derby sees three-year old colts from across Europe descend to battle it out for the prestigious Investec Derby title. The unique undulations and camber over one and a half miles of the Epsom Downs track makes this the supreme test of the racehorse and is Britain’s richest race worth £1.5million. Two-time Investec Derby winner Frankie Dettori will also be joining Vogue as an ambassador this year. Britain’s best-loved champion jockey won the race in 2007 on Authorized and 2015 on Golden Horn, and will be looking for a further win in
2019 to add to his triumphant tally. Completing the line-up is Clare Balding, one of the UK’s most prominent sport broadcasters and journalists. Investec Ladies Day tickets start from £12.50 and Investec Derby Day tickets from £20 for the outer enclosures and £60 and £65 respectively for the Grandstand Enclosure where the Style Awards take place on Investec Ladies’ Day. The Hill is accessible free of charge on both days of the Festival. NEW for 2019 is the Queen’s Stand Lawn, part of the Queen’s Stand Enclosure with views of the horsewalk, a selection of luxurious food and drink options and live music. Dress Up and Get Down for a Celebration of Vintage at Brooklands Museum
The Brooklands Vintage Festival Saturday 18th May 2019, 10am – 9pm Simon Burgess Photography
T
he public are urged to dress up in vintage style, step back in time and immerse themselves in nostalgia well into the evening at Brooklands Museum’s annual homage to the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s on Saturday 18th May. Live period music in the dance marquee, aircraft and vehicle displays and a well-stocked trade village will mean an unmissable day as the 32 acre site brings together the fashion, music, dancing and vehicles from these great post-war decades of style. In the dance marquee will be a rolling programme of live music, DJs and FREE dance classes while outside, under the Race Bays will be traders selling everything from clothing and records to homewares, books and magazines. Any ladies wishing to refine their look should head to the Press Hut as a vintage-style hair and make-up parlour will be set up courtesy of Hair That Turns Heads – a troupe of stylists who specialise in recreating the looks and styles from the period. Due to the high demand on the day, they are already taking appointments in advance. To discuss a booking, speak with the team directly on: 07733 383 735 or e-mail: lucy@hairthatturnsheads.co.uk. Displays of vehicles will include saloons, tourers, vans, motorcycles, hot rods and military which will fill the Paddock, Motoring Village and surrounding areas along with re-enactor groups portraying everything from the Home Guard, RAF and Land Army Girls to civilian and family life adding to the ‘time travelling’ effect. In the skies, the organisers are planning fly-ins of period aircraft*. These will land on the airstrip opposite the Museum entrance at Mercedes-Benz World and visitors will be able to see them up close and meet the pilots. Special guests on the day include the Vintage Tourists, a couple of globe-trotting gals who write about the very finest places to visit all with a vintage twist. They have been tasked with scouting the site for the best-dressed man and lady at this

year’s event which culminates in a prize-giving ceremony in the marquee in front of eager crowds. Also making an appearance will be Studio Harlow: specialising in Hollywood style portraits, they will be setting up a free portrait studio in the Art Deco surroundings of the Ladies Reading Room in the Clubhouse. This will give visitors a chance to capture their inner film star and provide a memorable keepsake of their day. Brooklands was the world’s first purposebuilt motor racing venue which retains its 1930s appearance and buildings so is a perfect venue for such a nostalgic event as this. As well as the motoring heritage, aircraft production and flying which took place at Brooklands over an 80 year period can be fully explored by visitors as their entry ticket includes access to the incredible Award-Winning Aircraft Factory. Inside, full size sections of aircraft are displayed on ‘assembly lines’ and visitors can try some of the tooling and manufacturing skills used by workers through specially-designed interactive work stations. The centre piece in the factory is ‘R for Robert’, the Brooklands WW2 Wellington Bomber surrounded by artefacts that tell the incredible stories during this period and ‘meet’ some of the pilots, engineers and 14,000 workforce that made Brooklands one of the most productive aviation sites in Europe. All the aircraft, racing car and motorcycle exhibition areas at the Museum will be open as usual from 10am until 5pm. However, the music and dancing will continue in the marquee until 9pm with a bar and catering to keep visitors sustained. There will be a Family Activity Zone led by the Brooklands Learning Team where children can make their own traditional toy to take home. FREE parking will be available, just follow the event signage on the day. www.brooklandsmuseum.com
THE DETAILS Tickets are available in advance at a discounted rate or on the day: Adults £14.50/£16, Seniors £13.50/£15, Children (5-16 yrs) £8/£9, Family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 children) £38/£42. A Gallery Resurrected Coalminer turned illustrator, painter and caricaturist back in the limelight as trustees set out plan to guarantee gallery’s future
A
£42,000 National Lottery Heritage Fund will help secure the future of a unique archive of more than 800 works of art that have lain quietly in a Surrey village hall for more than 60 years. The award, the result of a highly competitive campaign by the Sidney Sime trustees, will bring the talents of this extraordinary Victorian/Edwardian artist back into the limelight as they create a sustainable programme of funding and management to ensure that his legacy is preserved for the enjoyment and fascination of future generations. Appropriately entitled A Gallery Resurrected, the campaign finally met success just before Easter. Built in 1956 from the proceeds of the sale of the nearby family home, the Worplesdon Memorial Hall (www.sidneysimegallery.org.uk) houses all 800 of Sidney H Sime’s (1865-1941) artworks, as well as letters, books and personal memorabilia in his wife Mary’s possession, as a permanent memorial for future heritage, conservation, enjoyment and interest. Subsequent acquisitions include personal letters and 36 caricatures of local men who frequented the New Inn pub nearby whom Sime drew. A career as an artist, caricaturist, humourist, scholar, philosopher and illustrator must have seemed an impossible dream for the povertystricken young man from Manchester who spent his early years down coalmines, but his extraordinary imagination and raw talent led to him becoming a renowned illustrator of books and magazines following formal training at Liverpool School of Art. Sime was patronised by wealthy aristocrats Lord Dunsany (book illustration) and Lord Howard de Walden (Theatre design), and his unique 3 2 M AY 2 0 1 9
style, reminiscent of Blake, Rackham, Dulac and Beardsley reflects a fascination for the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The legacy is important as a valuable international resource for research by experts with many articles in illustrated magazines and books available for examination. Art UK have catalogued and published all 132 of his oil paintings. Trustee Mary Broughton expressed thanks to local groups who had supported the endeavour, including Guildford and West Surrey Area Arts Society, the Friends of Guildford House and Surrey Museums Committee. “This is the most wonderful news after many months of hard work and working closely with HF,” she added. “It is the catalyst we needed to take the gallery into the 21st century and crucially, to explore the possibilities of how to promote the wonderful variety of artworks we have by this amazing and talented artist, yet little known still by many. “The gallery must be placed on a sound footing with professional advisors and Lawyers to guide us in this process to ensure as trustees, we can create a sustainable future.”

Step into the most exciting school in England “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised”
A
lthough it has all the facilities of a typical public school, Hurtwood House specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. Changing schools at 16 opens up a whole new world of fresh experiences and challenges and provides the perfect steppingstone between school and university. Hurtwood House is young, exciting and dynamic and, most importantly of all, it is exceptionally creative with drama, media, art, textiles, dance, music and singing to die for. Famous former students include Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (music for Gladiator, Rain Main, Lion King) and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon’s Daughter) and watch out for Hollywood hot-tip Jack Huston (Factory Girl). Zara Brownless (winner of the first Young Apprentice). But marvellous as the performing and creative arts are, this school is definitely not a one-trick pony. It also caters for the budding entrepreneur, doctor, lawyer, architect, etc etc etc with a range of subjects which, though less eyecatching, are no less successful and inspirational. Small wonder, then, that the world is beating a path to Hurtwood’s door, and one of the first things to strike visitors is that it has a completely different “campus” feel about it – not like school at all. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition - more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store. At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time 3 6 M AY 2 0 1 9
to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. As one satisfied customer puts it: “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised.” Indeed, Hurtwood has a file of letters as thick as your arm from grateful parents, and clearly what they appreciate most is that Hurtwood has given their children the confidence to cope with anything in life and has fired up their enthusiasm. “Her mind was turned on,” says one, “and her appetite for learning is voracious. I want you to know that you lit the fuse.” Who could ask for anything more?

ow approaching their ninth month of operations, Seven Bluebirds in Esher, is still keeping things very interesting in the local food scene with their innovative menus, fresh food cooking and high quality dining experience, all at an affordable price. “In order to keep our regulars, and new comers, interested and coming back for more, we spend a lot of time coming up with dishes that are not only unique to the the local dining scene, but also interesting twists on some of the classics” says owner Daryl. Case in point: the Chickpea & Aubergine Curry. A vegan dish on their dinner menu that uses pan fried gnocchi as opposed to rice as the carrier. It’s in keeping with their philosophy of thinking outside the box, and bringing unique dishes from around the globe into Esher. Something Daryl attributes to his numerous years working in high end hotels and restaurants around the world. Think Chicken & Waffles on their brunch menu, Beef Barbacao Tacos on the lunch menu and countless internationally inspired items on the Dinner menu. This independent restaurants’ “outside the box” thinking is not only confined to the the food offering. Their recently introduced cocktail menu features the likes of a Spicy Margarita, French Martini and a very interesting sweet cocktail. “My Jam” incorporating egg white, orgeat syrup and vodka along with, of all things, raspberry jam. All priced at a very reasonable £8. When asked what the coming months hold for Seven Bluebirds, Daryl was quick to point out

some interesting new additions to the menu, as well as some old favourites from last August when they first opened. “Our take on the classic Prawn Cocktail as well as a Gazpacho were incredibly popular last summer, so much so that many of our regulars have insisted that they return to the menu. We’re constantly thinking up new ideas that keep interest peaked, as well as menu items that you wouldn’t normally find in the immediate area.” He goes on to mention that with Spring now in full swing, diners can expect new seasonal dishes that he is confident cannot be found anywhere within a 10 miles radius of Esher....he hinted at a Moroccan inspired, 48 hour braised Lamb Breast. Seasonal menu changes, along with a fabulous Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, and Weekend Brunch (including free flowing proseccco on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays), all professionally served in a beautiful, unpretentious space seems to be keeping Seven Bluebirds firmly in the minds of diners in the area looking for something a little different than what the chain restaurants have on offer. Don’t take our word for it though, try them out. You wont be disappointed. Menus and reservations available at: www.sevenbluebirds.co.uk

Women in Photography: A History of British Trailblazers Until 2 June 2019 This new and unique Lightbox exhibition will for the first time in over 30 years present a comprehensive historical survey of the achievements of female photographers working in Britain. From the early innovations of Anna Atkins through to Dorothy Bohm’s documentation of 1960s London, through to the contemporary self-portraiture of Sarah Lucas in the 1990s – Britain has cultivated a long tradition of trailblazing women whose significant contribution to the medium will be recognised in this exhibition.

omen in Photography: A History of British Trailblazers will feature around 70 works including Turner Prize winners and nominees and Venice biennale exhibitors such as Helen Sear, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Collins, Gillian Wearing and Jane and Louise Wilson. The works featured will date from the mid-19th century through to 2009 and will chart progressions in style, techniques and popular subject matter. Early notable photographers include Julia Margaret Cameron, Lady Hawarden and Queen Alexandra. Works have been generously lent by many leading museums and galleries including by Her Majesty The Queen from the Royal Collection, Tate, Victoria & Albert Museum, Arts Council Collection, British Council Collection, National Portrait Gallery, Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Lee Miller Archive. The works will be presented chronologically and visitors will be transported on a whistle-stop journey of the history of female photography. There will be five key themes running throughout this story: ‘Photographic Processes’ as demonstrated by Anna Atkins, Susan Derges and Joy Gregory. ‘Staging the Scene’ where artists create a narrative with their compositions which will be represented by artists such as Emma Barton, Eveleen Myers and Mitra Tabrizian. ‘Photo Journalism’ is a theme which starts from the early 1900s with Olive Edis through to Edith Tudor-Hart, Lee Miller, Grace Robertson and Val Wilmer. ‘Interiors and Spaces’ will reflect on women’s role and position within society and will also include some personal, often psychological responses from the artist. This will be demonstrated by photographers such as Sirkka-Liisa Konttinnen, Hannah Starkey, Jane and Louise Wilson and Sam Taylor-Johnson. ‘Race and Representation’ will explore issues of diversity and inclusion as represented by Gabriella Sancisi, Sonia Boyce, Joy
Gregory, Suki Dhanda, Maud Sulter, Shirley Baker, Val Wilmer and Jane England. To complement the photographs on display, Professor Jean Wainwright from the University of Creative Arts has compiled new and archival interviews with a selection of the artists included in the exhibition. The interviews will be installed as sound compilations, as conversations directly referring to the artists’ individual photographs on display. Professor Wainwright will chair a talk and panel discussion ‘Her Stories in Photography’ at The Lightbox on 30 May in collaboration with Fast Forward Women in Photography at University for the Creative Arts. The exhibition is part of an ongoing international campaign to bring pioneering women photographers to a wider audience and expose the discrimination of working in a male dominated world. The exhibition is generously supported by a Jonathan Ruffer Curatorial Research Grant from Art Fund and a grant from The Arts Society. Women in Photography: A History of British Trailblazers will be on show at The Lightbox in Woking, Surrey, until 2 June 2019. The awards are for companies holding the Surrey Hills Trade Mark that excel in their collaboration with other businesses, improve environmental sustainability and conserve the Surrey Hills. Shere Kitchens won gold because they pledge to plant special elm trees for every one of their bespoke kitchens. Four special elm trees were planted at the Clandon Woods Nature Reserve in November 2018 to help provide a wildlife corridor for the endangered White-Letter Hairstreak butterfly. Ann Moriarty, the creator of the original awards concept said: “The Trade Mark Surrey Hills promotes the best of what Surrey has to offer and celebrates those organisations that share the values of supporting the local environment”. The Gold Trade Mark Surrey Hills was awarded to Shere Kitchens and to Clandon Wood Nature Reserve & Natural Burial Ground. Real Shopping & Dairy Dolls I Take a browse around Lavender Goose in Gomshall t’s always a joy to discover a local independent shop that’s just that little bit different. Old school browsing – that’s where you can see, touch, and even smell products– has always been the remit of gift and lifestyle store Lavender Goose in Gomshall. Once an“add-on” to a large tearoom, the shop is now the main event, spread over 2 floors of a former Victorian inn. There’s still a cosy café serving excellent coffee and enhancing the “Real Shopping” experience created by owner Jane Radford. With an eclectic mix of fashion, accessories, homewares and soft furnishings Lavender Goose is the perfect one stop shop for thoughtful purchases. With discerning customers always looking for the unique – preferably with a Fair Trade or artisan provenance - Jane certainly rises to the challenge. “Every year we find new ethically produced products and UK designers - it’s no coincidence these become our best sellers” says Jane.” Fair Trade brands such as Nkuku, Dassie, Namaste and Jarapa are always in stock and it’s good to know those sales benefit everyone.” It’s so easy to pick up a “little something” seasonally fashionable at Lavender “One of our favourite Uk designed brands is One Hundred Stars” Jane tells us. She discovered them long before Nigella Lawson caused a buying frenzy wearing their Venice Map Gown on TV. This year’s Kew Garden collaboration range is a stunner – “this rail has the biggest Ooh Aah factor “ laughs Jane. Choosing small and precious gifts demands the hands-on approach. The beautiful Tales From The Earth jewellery range at Lavender Goose is a joy to choose from with beautifully designed and packaged silver pieces that say just the right thing. “Sharing precious sentiments without sentimentality” as Jane says. Candles and cushions, baskets and bracelets, mugs and monkeys ( yes, monkeys currently pop up all over Lavender Goose but of course they’re not real) – there’s lots to see including a fabulous new faux flower florist and gardenalia “department” on the first floor. “Customers often say they could stay all day” Jane tells us. It really is one of those magical shops - you could swear something had just appeared that wasn’t there minutes before. “It’s an endless challenge finding new things” Jane tells us “but I have great chats with our customers, I get a good feel for what they like - and they spur me on! ‘til death do us part I
n the flurry of activity leading up to the ‘big day’, reviewing Wills is not considered a priority and is often overlooked and left unresolved for some time. This can have unfortunate consequences. ‘It is important to appreciate that marriage or remarriage will automatically revoke any existing Will that you have in place.’ We recommend that you include on your to-do list making a Will which is prepared either: • ‘in contemplation’ of the marriage so it is not revoked by the subsequent marriage; or • After the wedding, but this is understandably a risky approach. If you die without a valid Will in place the intestacy rules apply, which set out who will benefit from your estate. This could lead to some undesirable results, particularly if it is your second marriage. Children from a previous marriage may not inherit from your estate as you would wish. This could lead to potentially unexpected and unwelcome claims against your estate. Tensions may arise between the competing and conflicting interests of those expecting to benefit, such as children from a previous marriage (or relationship) and the new spouse. Preparing a Will can avoid leaving your family in this uncomfortable situation. For couples who have children from a previous marriage you could consider including a type of trust in your Will which balances the competing needs to provide for your current spouse (and perhaps young children from the new marriage), whilst also treating any children from a previous marriage fairly. This can be done through providing your new spouse with the ability or right to use and enjoy your assets during their lifetime, but on their death they can then be divided fairly between all of your children. This is
5 2 M AY 2 0 1 9
just one way in which a Will is helpful in structuring your assets and protecting them when entering a new marriage and ensuring that your wealth passes according to your wishes.
Lasting Power of Attorney (‘LPA’) You should also review any existing powers of attorney. A power of attorney allows a person or people you choose and trust to make decisions for you in the event that you are no longer able to do so. There two types being a: • Property and Financial Affairs LPA; or • Health and Welfare LPA. LPA’s allows you to choose the people that you trust to make decisions about your finances, or ongoing health and welfare decisions, such as consenting to or refusing life-sustaining treatment on your behalf. You can also appoint trusted individuals to manage your financial affairs on your behalf. Quite often people will appoint their spouse as an attorney. Unlike Wills, powers of attorney are not revoked by divorce or remarriage and therefore they will need to be updated to remove any former spouse. ‘Who would want a former spouse or partner making personal decisions about matters such as life support or refusing medical treatment, especially if it was an acrimonious divorce’? ‘ Do you want them to have control over finances, which no doubt you spent a lot of time negotiating upon’? We would always hope that these issues outlined above would not apply to us but it is important not to leave these matters to chance. If you would like to discuss any of the matters raised then contact us. Julie Man, Head of Private Wealth 01932 590643 julie.man@mundays.co.uk www.mundays.co.uk

Why moving in together means preparing for the worst T here is an increasingly common scenario that I see which goes as follows: a couple who are not married have decided to live together and wish to purchase a house. For various reasons, one party provides a greater contribution to the purchase of the property (and in some cases, the only contribution), usually supported by a mortgage for the balance. The property is purchased in joint names with no declaration regarding shares or ownership. Time passes on, the relationship ends and the couple separate. At this point, the party providing the greater investment is shocked to learn that their contributions are not accounted for and that their share of the property is a simple 50%. So what’s going on? When purchasing a property in joint names, there are two ways in which you can own the property: as Joint Tenants or as Tenants in Common. If you hold the property as Joint Tenants, you each own the whole of the property together. If one of you were to die, the survivor would inherit the property regardless of the contents of any Will.
This is often seen as a benefit which protects your loved one from having to jointly own a property with your beneficiaries should the unexpected happen. However, it does not take into account contributions and the view of the Court is that there is a presumption to own the property equally. This means when it’s time to separate, each party will usually be considered to own half the property. If you hold the property as Tenants in Common, you each have defined separate ‘shares’ in the property. You can define the respective percentages owned by each of you and your ‘share’ of the property will pass in accordance with your Will. So how do I protect myself ? Whilst separation is the last thing you want to be discussing when purchasing a property, it is important to have the ‘what if ?’ conversation before you buy. If you are putting down a greater deposit, or are expecting to pay a greater share of the mortgage payments, it may be worthwhile considering how you wish to reflect this in your ownership of the property – especially if the funds are coming from a third party (such as parents loaning deposit monies). Provided you hold the property as Tenants in Common, you can record your respective shares in the property in a legal document called a Declaration of Trust or Deed of Trust. This document would set out how any sale proceeds are to be split in the event that you separate, which can be as simple or as complex as required. I’ve already bought my property – is it too late? Even if you’ve purchased your property, you can still take steps to protect yourself by preparing a Declaration of Trust and, if necessary, changing from Joint Tenants to Tenants in Common. This will require the agreement of the other party however, so it is best to approach this when the relationship is still amicable.
We’re separated. We previously agreed I would own a greater share but now my ex-partner wants 50% - is there anything I can do? The Court has the power to determine the respective shares each party owns in a property where there is a disagreement. However, such cases can be complex and require evidence. The Court is primarily concerned with the parties’ intention at the time of purchase, and if the property was purchased as Joint Tenants or as Tenants in Common with 50% shares each this will be evidence to the intention of an equal split. If you are concerned about the ownership of your property, it is always best to take legal advice. 5 4 M AY 2 0 1 9

THE LOST WORDS AT GATTON PARK I
nspired by evidence that children are no longer using words like ‘dandelion’ and ‘kingfisher’, award-winning author Robert Macfarlane and illustrator Jackie Morris, have created The Lost Words. Gatton Park is supporting Lost Words for Surrey, a campaign to have a copy of the book in every primary school in the county. www.lostwordsforsurrey.co.uk
About The Lost Words In 2007 a well-known children’s dictionary, using established algorithms, found that children were no longer using words such as ‘acorn’, ‘conker’ and ‘otter’, instead words such as chatroom and blog were becoming increasingly popular. Reflecting this usage, and with a finite amount of space in the dictionary, these nature-based words were taken out to make space for those more commonly used words. Children were no longer talking about nature. By way of an answer to this, award winning author Robert Macfarlane and award winning author and illustrator Jackie Morris, got together to create a book celebrating these missing words. The book explores twenty words including ‘kingfisher’, ‘heather’ and ‘newt’, each word has its own magicalacrostic spell and beautiful illustration. The hope is that The Lost Words will recapture children’s imaginations and stir in them a love and appreciation of wild places, plants and animals. In a 2008 National Trust survey, only a third of 8-11 year olds could name a magpie, and in a paper published in Science magazine, a group of 11 year olds had 80% accuracy at identifying Pokemon
5 6 M AY 2 0 1 9
“In a 2008 National Trust survey, only a third of 8-11 year olds could name a magpie”
characters, and only 50% accuracy at identifying common species of British plants and animals. With evidence of an increasing disconnect between children and nature, it is more important than ever that they know and understand these words. If children do not feel connected to the natural world, they won’t feel concerned about it. If we can inspire a love of nature at a young age, it will last a lifetime! There have been several crowd-funding campaigns up and down the UK to raise enough money to get The Lost Words into schools. There is an illustrated map showing the areas where this has been successfully achieved. We would love to make Surrey part of this amazing movement. As well as the book, each school will receive a copy of ‘An Explorer’s Guide to the Lost Words’, a teaching resource which overlaps with the National Curriculum. A sparkling launch weekend for vineyards of the Surrey Hills
A celebration of local vineyards offering outstanding wines, beautiful views and a warm welcome. Five leading vineyards, based in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, announce their inaugural weekend of festivities June 8th – 9th 2019 to celebrate the formation of a new English wine region: ‘Vineyards of the Surrey Hills’
A
new collaboration of five multi-award winning vineyards have announced a special launch weekend on 8th and 9th June 2019, to celebrate the formation of a new English wine region - ‘Vineyards of the Surrey Hills’. This collection of top producers, located in the glorious Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), offers guests a fantastic experience – outstanding wines, beautiful views and a warm welcome. This group of picturesque vineyards excels in producing outstanding wines, ranging from exquisite English sparklings, through still white and rosé wines, to sumptuous sweet wine. Each will host unique experiences to delight visitors. Guests of this celebratory weekend can choose to take part in a range of different activities at each vineyard; from viewing Sculptures, enjoying music or a picnic in historic gardens, exploring a ‘secret vineyard trail’, sampling a range of wines from tasting bars set in the vineyards, or even participating in a Battle of Waterloo ‘Champagne vs English sparkling taste-off,’ hosted by a master of wine. “England is now internationally recognised as a leading producer of top quality wines” explains Nick Wenman, owner of Albury Organic Vineyard and chair of Wine GB South East. “We are proud to be putting Surrey on the map as a premium wine region, offering some of the very best wines and visitor experiences that England has to share”. Sibylla Tindale, co-owner of High Clandon and a member of the group explains: “This initiative not only celebrates our outstanding wines but also the beauty of the five vineyards set within the Surrey Hills AONB. Each vineyard, from boutique to big, has unique offerings in multi-award winning English wines and tours. We want our visitors to delight in wandering through the vineyards, tasting the wines, to learn something new and to really immerse themselves here.” Vineyards of the Surrey Hills was recently 5 8 M AY 2 0 1 9
created to celebrate the excellence of wines grown in this unique area. Nurtured on the chalky limestone hills with the same geology as that of the Champagne region, these vineyards have a unique location and represent the very pinnacle of quality in the increasingly-successful English wine industry, having won top international awards for their wines and wine tourism. Easy to find and easy to reach, just 20 miles from London, the vineyards comprise Denbies Wine Estate, High Clandon Vineyard, Albury Organic Vineyard, Chilworth Manor Vineyard, and Greyfriars Vineyard. A map of the wine region invites visitors to explore the area using easily accessible routes whether they’re walking the North Downs, hopping on a train from London, or enjoying a drive along the leafy lanes of Surrey. They invite you to enjoy their stunning vineyards, taste the wines, and learn something new. Immerse yourself in this area of outstanding natural beauty.

Do you want to improve skin laxity, texture and fine lines? Profhilo – An innovative approach to skin rejuvenation
P
rofhilo is an exciting and unique rejuvenation product for the face, neck and décolletage, being unlike any other skin treatment on the market. Dr Peter Forrester always looks critically at new treatments and never jumps on the bandwagon of new treatments until he has had time to evaluate the exaggerated claims made by some manufacturers and occasionally other practitioners. He has regularly used Profhilo since Summer 2017 and hence has had a good opportunity to evaluate its effects. He is now convinced Profhilo is a safe, effective and innovative product. Profhilo is designed to improve skin laxity, texture and lines by stimulating collagen and elastin production. This effect combined with increased hydration will produce a subtle lifting and tightening effect. Although Profhilo is composed of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) it is not a filler and is aimed at achieving a very different effect from all the currently available HA fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero. It will not add
excessive volume and hence there is no risk that a Profhilo treatment will result in an obviously filled or ‘pillow face’ look. It is manufactured by IBSA, a long-established and highly reputable Swiss company and was first launched in Italy in 2015 and subsequently in the UK in January 2016. Since launch there have been an increasing number of positive reviews and opinions in the media. A Profhilo treatment is quick and easy. Just 5 small injections of Profhilo are administered to each side of the face. Discomfort is minimal and other than the possibility for a small bruise there is no downtime. There will be an initial increase in hydration, but the main effects will build over the following weeks. A second treatment must be given 4 weeks later to maximise the beneficial effects. Also Dr Forrester now offers the option of combining Profhilo with INTRAcel, our proven and long-established radio-frequency micro-needling treatment. Together they are an unbeatable combination.
Non Surgical Treatments • Anti-wrinkle Injections - reduce frown lines and crow’s feet. • Dermal Fillers - smooth deeper lines and furrows as well as returning lost volume to the face. • Thread Lift - minimally invasive procedure where surgical threads are used to lift and support cheeks, jowls and neck. • Facial Peels - helps to return a healthy glow to dull tired skin. Peels also reduce fine lines, wrinkles uneven skin tone, acne and scarring. • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) natural anti-ageing skin rejuvenation treatment using small amounts of recipient’s blood to improve the skin’s texture and to reduce lines and wrinkles.

HOW
MARY QUANT CHANGED FASHION
Prudence Wade explores
M
the legacy of the feminist icon who helped make the miniskirt famous
ary Quant may be instantly recognisable for her ginger bob, but it’s her youthful mod designs that she’ll be forever remembered for. Looking back at her influence, it’s clear Quant’s impact was far greater than just bringing miniskirts and hot pants into the mainstream - her impact on the fashion industry and society as a whole really can’t be understated. Walking through the Victoria & Albert’s latest exhibition, which is dedicated to the designer’s career between 1955-1975, brings the extent of this impact to life. Now aged 89, Quant’s designs - and her ethos - are as relevant today as they were back in the Swinging Sixties. Born in London to Welsh parents in 1930, Quant
6 6 M AY 2 0 1 9
grew up in an age of austerity - but her designs were an antidote to this, championing fun, frivolity and women’s liberation. She set up her first store, Bazaar, on the King’s Road in London’s Chelsea in 1955, and her fashion and lifestyle empire only grew from there.
A true titan of the industry, here are just some of the ways Quant revolutionised fashion... She was a role model for young women Quant’s clothes struck a particular chord with young women who, like the designer, were children of austerity who wanted to enjoy life a bit more
than the generation before them. Her style was playful and fun - she riffed on the tweed suits her customer’s mother wanted her to wear by raising hemlines and making everything a whole lot more youthful. Unlike many of the more traditional fashion houses, Quant wasn’t catering for the old elite instead, she encapsulated exactly what it was like to be a young woman in the 1960s. As a female professional excelling in a male-dominated industry - to this day, many of the major fashion designers are men - she was inspiration for a new generation of working women. She was the first designer to use PVC, they shiny, wet-look synthetic material. The result was clothes which were young, daring and just a bit sexy which was counteracted by the schoolgirl style she favoured, with Peter Pan collars galore. Quant certainly knew her audience - one of her ad campaigns was entitled ‘Youthquake’, showing just who she wanted to dress. She ended up trademarking the daisy symbol, which signified youthfulness and fun. And while Quant might not have invented the miniskirt, she certainly helped it become the defining garment of the decade.
She was a feminist icon The fashion industry predominantly caters to women, and yet the designing of womenswear is monopolised by men. Past exhibitions at the V&A have been dedicated to the likes of Christian Dior, Cristobal Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen titans in the industry, but all men. Quant managed to break the glass ceiling which still exists for female designers, but this wasn’t the only way she was a true feminist hero. In the lateSixties and early-Seventies, the women’s liberation movement exploded into the mainstream, and with it came various social shifts. Things were increasingly opening up to women in the UK - the Pill became available and society’s expectations of how women should dress were also changing. Her designs were a way for women to express their independence - she famously liked shorter hemlines because it made it easier to run to the bus. Hers weren’t clothes made to restrict the wearer, but to give them more freedom - Quant favoured a stretchy, wearable jersey material for many of her designs. She was also ahead of the curve in terms of androgynous dressing and constantly played with masculine tailoring. With ultra-girly miniskirts as well as more tailored suits, Quant showed that women didn’t have to express themselves in a singular way.
clothes were beautiful, but wholly unattainable for most women. Not only did Quant manage to shift more of the world’s focus on London, but she also worked hard to bring fashion to a wider group of people. As well as her eponymous high-fashion label, in 1963 she launched a cheaper diffusion line, called Ginger Group. With this, she pioneered new methods of production to make her designs cheaper and more widely available for the average woman. On top of this, she sold sewing patterns (known as Butterick patterns) so home dressmakers could recreate her clothes with their own materials for a fraction of the price.
Mary Quant became the template for the modern lifestyle brand
“The fashion industry predominantly caters to women, and yet the designing of womenswear is monopolised by men”
A retrospective like the V&A’s exhibition shows how Quant was a pioneer in more ways than one. Nowadays, the fashion industry loves a bit of nostalgia - whether it’s bringing back chokers from the Nineties or power shoulders from the Eighties. Quant was an early adopter and knew how to harness the power of bygone styles, giving Victorian outfits a Sixties update and even bringing back flapper styles. Another thing she became the template for was becoming a broader lifestyle brand. Today, fashion brands rarely do just one thing, instead in a race to diversify their offerings. Quant knew she could capitalise on her brand, so instead of just sticking to designing miniskirts, she tried her hand at everything from cosmetics and tights, to underwear, shoes and home furnishings. Quant’s style was instantly recognisable and easily translated to other products, making her the true template for the modern lifestyle brand we’re so accustomed to today. Mary Quant is on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum until February 16, 2020. See vam.ac.uk.
She made fashion more widely accessible Quant was a breath of fresh air in the fashion industry. This was a time when Paris was seen as the fashion capital of the world, with an emphasis on haute couture and uber-expensive garments. These M AY 2 0 1 9 6 7

The Mayor and David Marshall opened the doors to the Hospital’s brand new reception and outpatient suite on 8th April. They greeted the first patients to the new facility. This marks the completion of the Hospital’s extensive £30m redevelopment. The new entrance and reception leads into a modern, fit-for-purpose outpatient facility with increased capacity. This includes twelve consulting rooms, a cardiac diagnostic room, five treatment rooms including for colposcopy, audiology and phlebotomy. The Mayor said “Congratulations to New Victoria Hospital for completion of this impressive redevelopment, which provides top class facilities for patients and staff alike. It is particularly timely as the Hospital marks its 60th anniversary.” David Marshall said “We are so excited that the building work is finally finished and we can reveal our new main entrance, which sits alongside Coombe Lane West. For the first time people can see the Hospital from the road. In addition to the entrance and reception, we have gained a redeveloped outpatient department with more space. Our patients will continue to receive the quality of care we have always provided, but this will now be in a five star environment. Our staff have continued to work in difficult circumstances during all the building work and now they will be able to do their jobs in a more comfortable environment in purpose built facilities. “The Hospital has been here for 60 years. My vision is to develop the Hospital for another 60 years. It’s recognised as a leading provider of safe, robust health services, and has an excellent

Biokinetics…
Addressing the cause not the symptoms
H
ave you got niggly knees, a sore shoulder, bad back or even achy ankles? Or do you feel fine but are also aware of the fact you don’t move as easily as you used to? Have you tried different treatments and found some relief but the problem reoccurs down the line? It could be that your symptoms are being treated rather than determining and addressing the cause of your complaint. Have you really tried everything? Enter Biokinetics, a South African based profession registered under the Health Professions Counsel of South Africa. The primary function of biokinetics is to improve health care and physical functioning using exercise as the main mode of treatment. Biokinetics looks at the body as a whole, how the soft tissues work together and takes into account previous injuries which can create imbalances. And... there is a Biokineticist right here in Kingston, Surrey. Julia Trollip, a registered biokineticist, has her practice, JT Biokinetics, situated at the Coombe Wood Golf Club. At JT Biokinetics , Julia uses exercise as her main mode of therapy to treat orthopaedic injuries, chronic diseases and lifestyle diseases. She explains that movement is essential for all individual’s mental and physical well being. However, in modern society, movement and exercise are often forgotten or pushed to the bottom of the list. Movement is also hampered or lost due to injury, age, lifestyle
7 2 M AY 2 0 1 9
or disease. Lack of movement can alter the body’s biomechanics which in turn can lead to discomfort or niggles and eventually injuries. Julia believes that there is a need for biokinetics here in the UK. This partly stems from her personal experience after a horse riding accident in 2001 left her with years of discomfort. She saw many therapists here and was given the common advice of rest and medication. She was also given prescribed generalised exercises and over time her condition worsened to the extent she was told she would just have to stop exercise. “I am so glad I didn’t accept that advice and that I found the help of a biokineticist back in South Africa. After diligently doing my rehab program (which was tailored to my ability at the time and altered according to my progress) I could go back to exercising at a high level”. Julia feels that there is a lack of or outdated education about injuries, how to rehab them and what can be done during the rehab process. She also believes that prescribing medication and rest can, at times, slow recovery. An individual’s age should not either be a reason why they should not be able to still enjoy certain activities or recover from injuries. Yes, age does have an impact but there are always ways in which help an individual be more comfortable or improve their daily activities. She does not use a “one size fits all’ approach and believes in empowering individuals to take responsibility for their process. This, she feels leads to more positive, long lasting outcomes. For more information please visit www.jtbiokinetics.com or call 07496 068 206.

HOW COOL IS YOUR POOL? They’re glamorous, highly desirable, fun and great for parties! And if you’ve been stuck in a car or train on a sweltering summer day, nothing beats diving into one as soon as you get home. A swimming pool will keep you fit and have friends beating a path to your door on a hot day.

O
utdoor pools (not counting the above-ground temporary ones) can cost anywhere from about £30,000 up to £1 million depending on how luxurious you want to go. Do check whether you need planning permission before you start to create your dream pool. Position is everything: south-facing, out of the wind, away from falling leaves and the right distance from the house provides maximum enjoyment. There are two main types of swimming pool: above ground pools and submerged pools. Above ground pools tend to be cheaper because you don’t have to dig a hole and fit them but submerged pools are more traditional and provide easier entry for children or elderly people. In addition to the type of pool, you will have to decide on the type of materials you want your pool to consist of... There are three common finishes: liner; fibreglass shell; and tiles. These all require different amounts of maintenance and will affect the overall price of the job. You can use eco-friendly equipment such as ground source heat pumps and solar pool covers can reduce running costs. Increasingly popular is a pool as part of an outdoor entertaining area, perhaps with other leisure facilities, like a hot tub or play area. The addition of a spa to your swimming pool really adds a social dimension. What better way is there to while away some time in comfort and warmth, without all that energetic swimming? Safety is a priority: a surrounding fence with a lockable gate, and steps leading down to the main pool are advisable. Especially if you have children. They
can still look stylish, ie the curved Roman steps add a particular feeling of luxury to your swimming pool. You need to consult a specialist swimming pool company - they will be able to guide you from day one... beginning with the type of pool and size you would like, space availability in your outdoor space, and any specific requirements you have to ensure a swimming pool is tailored for you. They will take you through the process as to how your pool will be built, and ensure everything is set to what you want. SPATA (the Swimming Pool and Associated Trades Association) vets its members before membership to ensure that they are competent, professional and up to date in their methods and workmanship, which means that a SPATAaccredited contractor is likely to be a good bet. That said, the single most important thing you should look for in a contractor is experience. Someone with at least several years’ experience in building swimming pools is ideal: they will know what does and doesn’t work and will have built several different types of pools, which means they will be well-placed to advise you on yours.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G Investments, is back for 2019 with another spectacular show brimming with style and elegance.
Highlights of the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show include……. SHOW GARDENS RHS BACK TO NATURE GARDEN – co-designed by The Duchess of Cambridge and awardwinning landscape architects Andree Davies and Adam White of Davies White Landscape Architects The Garden is part of the RHS’s partnership with NHS England, which promotes the physical and emotional wellbeing that access to green spaces and gardening provides. After Chelsea, some of the planting and landscaping will go to an NHS Mental Health Trust, as part of a national competition by the RHS. The garden will include a beautifully crafted hollow log for children to climb through, a den, waterfall, stream and tree house. The tree house will form the centrepiece featuring a swing seat hanging from the branches, a place for children and families to play together. The waterfall and stream will also encourage play. Flowers, fruits and seeds provide food for wildlife and nectar for bees and butterflies, while the plants offer nesting sites and shelter for birds and other animals. Water pours from hand-crafted spouts into a series of pools and streams trickling down through the garden alongside a staircase of vast stone platforms before ending in a tranquil pool. MONTESSORI CENTENARY CHILDREN’S GARDEN – designed by Jody Lidguard It will celebrate the work of Montessori St Nicholas and commemorate 100 years of Montessori in the UK. Like the Montessori teaching method, the garden is child-led yet future-driven, offering an engaging space to nurture children, teaching them about the natural world set alongside technology: the future of horticulture. TRAILFINDERS ‘ UNDISCOVERED LATIN AMERICA’ GARDEN - designed by Jonathan Snow. Inspired by the temperate rainforests of South America, the garden is built on a steep slope, which is covered in lush, temperate rainforest planting that enjoys high rainfall, cool temperatures, and wet conditions underfoot. Dramatic waterfalls cascade into a pool, and a striking red walkway winds its way through the garden, around the waterfalls and among the planting. The temperate rainforests of South America are under threat from urbanisation, over-farming and logging. The garden raises awareness of these fragile ecosystems. Brighten up your bathroom
Create a tropical paradise Following on from one of last year’s key interior trends, we’re set to continue welcoming an oasis of plants into our homes. However, for those of us who do not withhold green fingers, this isn’t a trend we’ve all been able to embrace, until now. So far, 2019 has seen the introduction of bold, leafy prints into interior décor and, thanks to Original Style’s Eden range, homeowners are now able to bring nature into bathrooms through the use of tiles. Original Style’s Eden range contains a variety of lush and leafy designs for a tropical paradise, from the soft and delicate Pergola, through to the more dramatic Hothouse and Glade. Pergola displays trailing fronds, Hothouse is a riot of palm leaves and Glade is a delicate bouquet of ferns. Designed and printed in-house at Original Style’s production site in Exeter, Devon; Eden’s designs provide a sensation of calm and are the epitome of the botanical trend. These tiles also feature a large format (600 x 300mm) to provide an almost seamless look for an appearance that mimics wallpaper but with all the advantages of tile. www.originalstyle.com 9 8 M AY 2 0 1 9

Be bold with a variety of bathroom wall lights from Besselink & Jones. Sometimes ceiling lights don’t give off the light that is desired in a bathroom, so adding wall lights not only makes for a brighter bathroom, it also adds a touch of sophisticated style. Brass lamps are vivid and luxurious which will make your bathroom radiant. With brass and gold being a traditional trend, this movement has carried on into the interior world today because of the sense of warmth it brings to any living space. Opt for the Large Horizontal Bathroom Light with Pineapple Finials or the Swivel Bathroom Light in Distressed Brass to achieve this glossy glow-up. For a more subtle and modern look, choose the Double Swivel Bathroom Light in Brushed Nickel or the Double Curved Arm Bathroom Light in Polished Chrome. About Arlo & Jacob Founded in 2015, Arlo & Jacob is a British family furniture brand that offers exceptional quality and beautifully designed sofas, armchairs and living room accessories. They are named after their founder’s children; two energetic little boys who love to build forts from their home sofa. It’s thanks to their imagination of turning their sofa into a playground that they decided to create sofas that were built to last a lifetime of jumping, playing, napping, and snuggling. All their furniture is handmade here in Britain, at their factory in Long Eaton, the home of British upholstery. ‘We know that families come in all shapes and sizes, which is why our furniture does too.’

Totally Tropical Trend
W
ith its bold colour scheme, punchy prints and eclectic decor, Tropical Crush is a great way to introduce fun, stylish elements of summer into your home and to celebrate the changing seasons. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice explores how to showcase this tropical look in the home, in two signature ways: first, an all-out maximalist approach and second, an elegant minimalist take.
1 0 8 M AY 2 0 1 9
Play with prints, colours and patterns for a maximalist approach For a huge dose of personality, a maximalist take on the tropical trend is the way to go. With vibrant hues, nature-inspired motifs, and colourful prints all part of the mix, the trick here is in layering them all together. “The maximalist approach is a fun, chic way to introduce the tropical look in key areas of the home such as the living room or even the bedroom,” Rebecca explains. “It all begins with a good centrepiece: a cosy grey sofa, or dark fabric bed is a solid, comforting anchor to add and build on. And from there, anything’s possible! To really celebrate this trend, animal-inspired decor and art are a fun way to go, and other tropical elements such as palm prints and lush indoor plants also up the ante. Round off the look with gold or brass accents for an elegant, contemporary touch.”
“Colour also takes the tropical-meets-maximalism approach to new heights by adding a cheerful boost to the space. Whether it’s through brightly-hued cushions and throws or colour-blocking the walls, opting for striking colour combinations - such as Pantone’s Living Coral with teal - really embraces the tropical aesthetic and creates a strong, stylish contrast.”
Opt for a light, breezy palette for relaxed, minimalist style
Tropical’s calmer, natural qualities can also be embraced through a more minimalist aesthetic. “This take on tropical works in all parts of the home, all the way from the living area to dining room, thanks to its welcoming, soothing aesthetic,” Rebecca says. “It’s a stylish, versatile look that can be adapted from season to season, while still evoking a fresh, summery feel.” “Opt for airy hues like off-whites and cream for a breezy, well-lit interior. This creates a chic backdrop for a comfy grey velvet sofa, or even a rich green settee for a luxe boost. Soften the look with various textures such as cushions, rugs, and of course, natural greenery to keep in with the tropical theme.” Green’s lighter tones can also double as a stylish neutral for the walls. “Sage is still a trending colour for the home, and its tranquil vibes fit right into a minimalist, tropical-inspired space,” adds Rebecca. “Its soothing, warm undertones offer a subtle pop of colour, and lends a welcoming feel to rooms like the dining area. Lighter furniture will contrast beautifully with this versatile hue – a white dining set stands out nicely as a strong focal point. Natural textures are go-to elements for this look, so slip in materials like rattan and wood to tie the entire room together.” www.furniturechoice.co.uk

Buy To Let Is Dead W
ell it’s on a life support machine at least and the government are doing their very best to pull the plug. There is still a core of investors keeping it alive but it’s nowhere near the busy market it once was. So how is the rental market being fuelled with a supply of stock for the private rented sector? On the whole it’s not but one contributor is the owneroccupiers who can’t sell and are deciding to rent out their homes instead. This however is mainly larger houses and doesn’t really help with the need for flats and affordable homes. The government really needs to go to Spec Savers with their short sighted view of the housing market, although not really surprising given that we’ve had eight housing ministers in as many years! Continued legislation and meddling with the private rented sector makes it less and less appealing to investors. We are told this is done to assist first time buyers get on the ladder and deter the greedy landlords. But it’s not working. First time buyers still aren’t buying because mortgages are hard to get and the right homes aren’t being built. Shortage in stock, plus increased legislation and taxation means that rents will rise, fact. This then hits the people that the government are trying to help, so the housing market is not only on life support but the doctor just shot himself in the foot too. Out of this however comes opportunity for the smart few. Property is still, long term, a safe place to keep your money. Even if the market remains flat or dips for the next 2-5 years it would be a very negative forecaster that wouldn’t agree capital growth over 10 years +. So, rents are on the way up and sales are soft, that means there are deals to be done. Many developments are offering excellent incentives to purchasers so now is the time to strike. That just leaves a seemingly exhaustive amount of 1 1 2 M AY 2 0 1 9
legislation and red tape to wade through but this is where a good agent is worth their weight. By that I don’t mean the new breed of cheap pretenders in call centres but experienced and qualified agents of which there are thousands out there in most High Streets and local offices. Talk to them, see what their market is doing, what type of property is in short supply and where there is strong demand. They will guide you through the legal maze, motivated by having a new Buy To Let landlord….which is a rare commodity nowadays. Going for grey R
ume was established over fourteen years ago when husband and wife Richard and Libby Baker left the family furniture firm to strike out on their own. The philosophy behind the new company was to delight in the beautiful and the beautifully made and to pursue this by making lovely furniture of original design to the very highest standards here in England. Taking the idea of classic English furniture as a starting point Richard stripped it back to its barest essentials to capture its inimitable timelessness. It is this enduring yet contemporary quality that is quintessentially Rume. The pieces are never mere copies, never pastiche, they are resolute in their contained elegance and confidence, furniture that is both familiar and startlingly original. To complement this contradiction Libby started to gather together an unrestrained collection of accessories and cushions from just about everywhere. The idea was not to choose items that would simply blend or fade into the background but to source objects that would not only hold their own but also work together, it was in fact an extension of what Richard and Libby had been doing for years in their own home. With the inclusion of beautiful lighting from some of the most regarded designers and manufacturers

in the world it has developed over time into a unique look, one of playful sophistication and elegant eclecticism. There is no reason why a well considered interior has to be dull or dutiful and Richard and Libby have made it their mission to slay the overstuffed, to cheer the earnest mantelpiece and to banish once and for all the beige. We can’t get enough of the yellow and grey combo, it’s an ongoing obsession at Rume.Cheery and stylish what more could you want? www.rume.co.uk
