O

riginally created as a Royal pleasure ground, the spectacular lake at Virginia Water is now a destination for families to enjoy all year round. The woodland shores of this magnificent lake are hugely popular amongst people who love to take part in the wide range of activities that are possible here - from walking or running the perimeter, to simply relaxing and enjoying the view. This area is steeped in a rich history that spans centuries - from ancient monuments, to cascading waterfalls and stunning vistas. Virginia Water is popular all year round with its glittering waters and abundance of wildlife. The ornamental Cascade waterfall is always a favourite feature - while children love the towering 100 foot Totem Pole, being fascinated by the ten mystical totem characters.

“The 100 foot totem pole was a gift to HM the Queen from the people of Canada”

2 6 M AY 2 0 2 2

The Lake The lake at Virginia Water was created in the 18th century under the stewardship of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, with the help of his architect Henry Flitcroft – and the construction work first began in 1752. The Duke had ambitious plans for the area, and his work on the project continued when his brother Henry Frederick succeeded him as Ranger. However on 1 September 1768, under Henry’s stewardship, a great storm destroyed the pondhead and Cascade, and emptied the lake! Thankfully, under the guidance of George III, work soon began to reconstruct and extend the lake to its present day size and scale. The lake and

its grounds were reinstated as a place of pageantry and spectacle, with fishing temples along the shore and an ornate Chinese junk peacefully resting on the waters. Today, our team continues in the traditions of skilfully tending and developing this ever changing landscape - with new trees and plantings, careful restoration and the uncovering of stunning vistas.

The Ruins The Leptis Magna ruins is a folly that, in the fashion of the time, was built to look like a genuine Roman relic - using some of the remnants of a Roman town near Tripoli. Because of the age and delicate nature of the ruins they are now enclosed within a fence line, but you can still get remarkably close to these impressive stones - and restoration in 2009 meant that even more of them can now be seen.

“The lake at Virginia Water was created in the 18th century under the stewardship of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, with the help of his architect Henry Flitcroft – and the construction work first began in 1752”

The Totem Pole The 100 foot totem pole was a gift to HM the Queen from the people of Canada, carved by master craftsman Chief Mungo Martin of the Kwakiutl Federation. It was erected in 1958 to mark the centenary of the establishment of the province of British Colombia as a Crown Colony. M AY 2 0 2 2 2 7

CHISWICK HOUSE & GARDENS Resurgence of period dramas spark interest in historic houses leading Chiswick House to introduce NEW Spotlight Talks for 2022.

C

hiswick House and Gardens are delighted to be introducing NEW Spotlight Talks for 2022. House and Garden ticket holders will be able to join the Visitor Experience Assistants at 2pm every day the house is open to discover more about the objects, stories and people who have influenced the history of this glorious example of 18th-century British architecture and landscaped gardens. Xanthe Arvanitakis, Director of Chiswick House & Gardens Trust, said: “The rise in popularity of period dramas such as Bridgerton and The Crown has sparked a great deal of interest in heritage properties and historic homes. Our Grade-I listed Neo-Palladian Georgian villa is full of surprising stories. Our new Spotlight Talks allow our visitors to delve deeper into the fascinating history surrounding the people and collections of Chiswick House.” Chiswick House was the home and creation of Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington. However, the Chiswick House we see today was never designed to function as a conventional house.

3 8 M AY 2 0 2 2

THE DETAILS Entry to the House and Kitchen Garden is £12.50 per adult and free to Chiswick House members. The house and gardens are open from April until late October each year. Even while the villa was under construction in 1727, one visitor commented that the house was more curious than convenient. Highlights this year include the reopening of the Summer Parlour having been closed since 2019 due to Covid-19. The Summer Parlour is said to have been built as early as 1716/17 and attributed to Lord Burlington and celebrated eighteenth century architect James Gibbs. In 1735 the interior of the Summer Parlour was completely redesigned by William Kent as a garden room for Lady Burlington whose flower garden and aviary lay immediately to the east. The main surviving feature of the room is the intricate not to be missed ‘grotesque’ style ceiling by Kent featuring figures, animals and foliage all intertwined. The Spotlight Talks will be included with an admission ticket to the House and will be limited to 15/20 people and will operate a first come, first served basis. chiswickhouseandgardens.org.uk

Tickets can be purchased at chiswickhouseandgardens.org.uk Chiswick House was used as a location for the 2004 film adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s 1848 novel Vanity Fair featuring Reese Witherspoon. Most recently some rooms were used in the filming of BBC period drama Harlots.

THE NEED FOR ‘FINANCIAL ADVICE’ HAS NEVER BEEN GREATER! Cliff Cooper of Weybridge Financial Services explains Over the past two years, economically Covid has dealt an economic blow. Recent events in Ukraine have cliffcooper@salisbury.co.uk also added to the rising cost of living and borrowing, which means that our investments and pension portfolios have to work harder to keep pace. This month, we are highlighting key areas that our readers should be considering and ways in which Weybridge Financial Services can assist, bearing in mind potential interest rises ahead!

Investment & Retirement Planning Global stockmarkets have been impacted by Covid-19 and events in Ukraine. Concerns remain that rising interest rates, supply chain

issues, energy costs and inflation will impact the stockmarket, even the more traditional cautious assets such as Bonds and Gilts are not immune! Therefore, it is vital that your investment and retirement strategy is ready for the challenges ahead and must be reviewed. Since we are also at the beginning of a new tax year, we will ensure you are making the use of your valuable allowances. If you have cash deposits, it is also worth talking to us to establish whether an investment is right for you. Although interest rates are increasing, standard savings rates are not keeping pace with inflation, the result being over time the value of your cash is falling.

Mortgages and Equity Release Lenders’ criteria is tightening and interest rates are rising, so it’s worth seeking professional advice when

considering a re-mortgage or next property purchase loan. Our advisers are experienced in securing mortgages for those who may have been declined elsewhere or have non standard income sources. With access to the whole of market and exclusive rates, they will recommend competitive deals subject to status. Before interest rates rise further, now is the time to benefit and save on monthly mortgage costs! For homeowners aged at least age 55 and over, ‘Equity Release’ frees up value (equity) tied up in your home tax free! Again, with interest rates low and fixed for life, it’s an ideal time to consider an equity release loan. If you have an existing equity release mortgage, it’s worth reviewing too as you might just save a significant sum on the accruing interest!

If you wish to discuss any aspect of your financial planning or borrowing needs, contact Tom Beckett on (01932) 842532 today for an initial discussion. Equity Release is a lifetime mortgage. Interest is charged throughout the duration of the loan, however this, together with the capital released, does not need to be repaid until the mortgage is cleared on death or a permanent move into a long-term care arrangement. Interest charged will increase the amount to be repaid to the lender. Entering into an equity release scheme will reduce the size of your estate on death and the amount available to be left as an inheritance. WFS would encourage you to discuss this with the potential beneficiaries. You must be aware that taking out an equity release mortgage may affect current and potential future entitlements to state benefits, your personal tax allowance and the amount of tax you pay. Please contact your local benefits office for further details on means-tested state benefits and either your accountant or HMRC for further information on taxation consequences. The value of investments can fall as well as rise. Capital may be at risk. Weybridge Financial Services is a trading style of Salisbury Financial Services Ltd. Salisbury Financial Services is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

The grounds at Guildford Castle were opened as public gardens in 1888 to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887. HOW TO ENCOURAGE YOUR DAUGHTERS INTO STEM

Danielle Desouza discovers how to inspire girls within the realms of science, technology, engineering and maths.

W

hen you think of women in science, some key names might come to mind, such as Marie Curie, Mae Jemison or Sarah Gilbert. But this is just scratching the surface: there are countless other women working to find cures for illnesses, teaching future generations about gravity or making coding seem as easy as breathing. Women across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) share their advice on how parents can positively encourage daughters into these fields… 5 8 M AY 2 0 2 2

Boost your daughter’s confidence Tell your daughters to “go for it”, says Dr Ems Lord, director of NRICH (nrich.maths.org), the University of Cambridge’s maths outreach programme. “You’ll never be bored if you love a challenge, and the thrill you get from solving a problem never wains.” Stress the importance of not giving up, advises Rachel Youngman, deputy chief executive at the Institute of Physics (iop.org). It can be intimidating entering a male-dominated field, but it is important for young people to realise “you are just as worthy of a place on a STEM course as a

male student, and just as able to achieve success”, she says. It’s also worth challenging your own stereotypes, with Youngman saying: “Leave your preconceptions at the door, and acknowledge that your idea of what it means to study physics may not be an accurate one.” “I think I was lucky, because my parents were very supportive,” says Dr Sadie Jones, outreach leader in astronomy at the University of Southampton. “I would say stuff like, ‘I want to be an astronaut’, and they would say: ‘Why not?’” Reach out to organisations supporting women in STEM As a parent, it can be hard to answer questions about STEM if you’re not involved in the field – but there are plenty of networks that can help. Pioneer (joely-to.wixsite.com/pioneer) is a support network for girls wanting to pursue maths, set up by Joely To, who’s a student herself. It provides work experience with top companies, and gives girls the opportunity to connect with female mentors in the industry. You could also reach out to Women In Tech (women-in-tech.org) – an organisation founded by Ayumi Moore Aoki to empower women to enter STEM, or The Blackett Lab Family Group (theblackettlabfamily.com) – a collective of black physicists. Jones says parents should encourage their daughters to get involved in the area they’re

interested in. “I managed to get a week of work experience at a university,” she says, recommending “emailing people and just seeing if you can shadow someone, even if it’s only for a few days, just so you can get a feel of what the job is like”.

“Parents should encourage their daughters to get involved in the area they’re interested in”

Encourage curiosity from a young age Lord says you don’t need to purchase expensive STEM tools or resources to spark curiosity in your child’s mind. “If families are looking to support their daughters, I’d encourage them to be more curious about their world when out and about,” she says. “Take time to notice the world around you, wonder at what you see and discuss what else you’d like to discover.” Vanessa Oakes is doing her PhD in biomedicine, and is a clinical instructor in anatomic pathology at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (vetmed.vt.edu). Her advice is: “Take her to the zoo, take her to museums, spend time outdoors looking at grass and leaves and twigs, let her ask what they’re made of and how they grow. Every STEM field is about asking questions first, and finding answers only second.” Advocate for STEM opportunities at school Schools can play a major role in a student’s development. “I remember when I was doing my GCSEs, the teacher actually showed us a video about supermassive black holes and I remember being so fascinated by that – and that’s what I ended up doing my PHD in,” says Jones. She now gives educational talks in schools, highlighting the contributions made by female scientists. If you think your child’s school should be offering more STEM-based activities, why not feed that back and see if you can cultivate change?

A NEW ERA IN DIVORCE LAW

T

here has been a welcome change in divorce law; however, there still remains what can be difficult decisions to make regarding child arrangements and finances and we can help guide you through. Making the decision to bring your marriage to an end is understandably a difficult and at times traumatic one. Historically the situation was compounded by the legal requirements to apportion blame and responsibility for that breakdown in most cases. After much lobbying by the legal profession and Resolution specifically on our behalf, no fault divorce came into being on the 6 April 2022. This is a long heralded change in divorce law and enables parties to bring an end to their marriage in a more dignified and constructive fashion. We, at Moore Barlow championed this change and consider it one of the most positive changes in family law in decades. A more pragmatic approach at the

6 2 M AY 2 0 2 2

commencement of the process will also help promote a better prospect of the spouses being able to work together to resolve other consequences of the breakdown of their relationship, such as agreeing the arrangements for their children and managing their finances in a more progressive and positive manner. There are now many dispute resolution options available to clients such as mediation and the collaborative practice giving rise to out of court solutions in family law. This enables clients to work together with the mediator or their legal advisors to achieve solutions that are bespoke to them and their families. This also invariably gives rise to a quicker and more cost effective resolution than can be achieved in court based proceedings. Our team at Moore Barlow promote all out of court resolution processes and assist our clients to navigate which of the many options available are best for them and their family.

HOME GYM

– MAKING THE MOST OF AVAILABLE SPACE AND WHAT MISTAKES TO AVOID A view from our expert.

W

e talk with Mick Rolton, owner of Gym Design & Supply, who shares advice and tips gained from installing more than 100 gyms and spas for over 20 years – from large corporate projects for businesses, property developments, educational facilities, and hotels through to small bedroom and garage conversions. We’ll be looking at making the most of available space and what mistakes to avoid as well as the importance of designing a gym that you’ll not only use regularly but will help you achieve your fitness goals.

M: 07976 237907 E: hello@gymdesignsupply.com W: www.gymdesignsupply.com F: @GymDesignSupply I: #GymDesignSupply

Double-check your dimensions - Sounds simple but disastrous if you get this wrong! Take into consideration the finished area including skirting boards. 2.5m is an ideal minimum height, but you can go much lower if you are smart with your machine choice. TV, Power & Data Points – These need to be in front of the cardio machines as well as for any planned future purchases. Cables across the floor are ugly! Corners - These can be dead-space, so you could fit an upright dumbbell rack in there or a V or U-shaped multi-gym. Operational Space - It’s very important that you understand how much room you need to exercise in the wider space beyond the equipment itself. Remember space for mind/body activities such as yoga, pilates and stretching. Lighting – This depends on the amount of available natural light. Lights should not glare directly onto the cardio consoles or onto your stretch area (there’s nothing worse than trying to stretch during a cool down with a bright light directed into your eyes!) Flooring - With so much focus on the machines and equipment, flooring can be an afterthought. Much of the available flooring can be of poor quality and will not last long and is often thin, soft and porous (attracting and retaining water and dust). You are putting heavy, expensive equipment on this, so the floor needs to be durable, able to support these machines and look good. Go for a minimum of 20mm thickness, non-porous and a dark colour with fleck or a

pattern in it which will help hide any dust/dirt. 1 sq m tiles will make the gym feel bigger. Flooring rolls are also an option for larger spaces. Versatility - Most home gyms do not have the space for every single piece of equipment available so look for machines that provide versatility. Barbells, dumbbells and cable machines are a good start. Peleton is a great brand but if you buy a Peleton machine, you are limited to the Peleton app. Is the whole family happy with this? Consider cardio machines that are compatible with not just the Peleton App but also other third-party Apps including but not limited to Zwift, iFit, Les Mills and Sufferfest. Go for Well-known Brands - There is nothing worse than having your only source of cardio sitting unusable for well over a month still awaiting a repair. In-house or unknown brands can cause big problems if a piece of equipment is faulty. Many companies offering budget equipment have a poor service and maintenance department (if at all!). Look for larger companies that offer a multi-year parts and labour warranty, especially for the larger pieces. Finally, make sure your gym is truly an inviting space, a space that you wake up in the morning and excited to look at as well as use! Although this initially costs more than a gym membership, you gain back time and it allows you to exercise more regularly than going to a standard gym, improving both you and your family’s health and wellbeing even further. This is absolutely priceless! Gym Design & Supply gives you 20 years’ of experience with an exclusive personal service, a wide range of options as well as an online price match guarantee.

STYLE SECRETS OF THE

QUEEN’S WARDROBE A royal fashion expert reveals some surprising things about the Queen’s fashion. By Katie Wright.

M

any of us know the Queen often wears eye-catching colours so she’ll stand out from the crowd during public appearances. But there’s a lot more to Her Majesty’s fashion choices than just bright frock coats and matching hats, as Bethan Holt discovered while researching her latest book, The Queen: 70 years Of Majestic Style. To mark the Queen’s 96th birthday which was on April 21, Holt shares some of the surprising facts she learned about the monarch’s wardrobe…

While most of her clothes are bespoke, during the early years of her reign she sometimes donned ready-to-wear dresses by British label Horrockses while on foreign tours. Holt explains: “She allowed the company to sell the same dresses she wore, which was a gift for the fashion pages.” And she’s continued to set trends, with Holt saying: “Even today, her colour choices often spark a rise in interest – sales of lime green rose by 134% after she wore the shade for her 90th birthday celebrations in 2016.”

She’s always been a style influencer

Her handbag is specially adapted for her

During her younger days, the Queen was as much of a fashion icon as the Duchess of Cambridge is today. “I found throughout her life, the Queen has had the power to influence trends,” Holt says. “As a baby, her mother’s preference for dressing her in cotton rather than wool impacted trends.”

British leather brand Launer (launer.com) has a Royal Warrant, and makes the Queen’s trademark handbags to her specific requirements. “They have an extra-long 16-inch strap so they hang comfortably from her arm, they are lined in silk rather than suede, and over the past eight or nine years, they have been modified to be as light

you from a lady-in-waiting when he sent over a pair of scarves in the requisite size and print.

She often wears trousers in private “The Queen has only been pictured wearing trousers in public a handful of times throughout her reign,” Holt says. “One such moment came in 2003 as she was leaving hospital following a knee operation.” Following the appearance, the tailor behind the trousers, Peter Enrione, revealed he had in fact made countless pairs of trousers for the Queen over the years. Holt adds: “While seeing her wear them in public might have caused a furore, they’re a central part of her private wardrobe.”

She’s her own style muse as possible for Her Majesty to carry,” Holt says. “Contrary to popular belief, she doesn’t own 200 styles – just a select few in different styles and neutral colours.”

She’s very particular about her silk scarves

The Queen: 70 years Of Majestic Style by Bethan Holt is published in hardback by Ryland Peters & Small, priced £18.99.

The Queen’s sartorial archive is an inspiration to designers today. “Rachel Trevor-Morgan, the Queen’s milliner, told me she continues to be inspired by Her Majesty’s 1950s style for the hats she makes for her now,” Holt says.

She’s the original diplomatic dresser

When she isn’t wearing a formal hat, the Queen protects her hair with a neatly tied silk scarf, many of which are from Hermès. But on one occasion, Launer gifted her two scarves. “Gerald Bodmer, the owner of Launer, told me he was given very specific instructions about the gift the Queen would like as a birthday present,” Holt recalls. Bodmer was told she’d like a square floral silk scarf measuring 34-inches, and received a thank

Throughout her reign, the Queen has made numerous diplomatic statements with her clothes. “In the 1950s, Norman Hartnell created special gowns incorporating meaningful symbols, whether it was wattle embellishments in Australia, or bees (the symbol of Napoleon) in France,” Holt explains. “Over the years, she’s worn cherry blossom in Japan, modest clothing in Saudi Arabia and red and white in Canada.”

ORIGIN - A SANCTUARY

T

ransforming your home with a bespoke pool house is the ultimate in home improvement. It allows you to create a place of relaxation, wellbeing and fun all in the comfort of your own home. Origin knows that a swimming pool can not only add value to your home but to your home life as well and there are many decisions to be made along the way. Attention to detail and precise planning is crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house as the process is quite unlike any other building project and requires more than just finding a competent builder. It’s important to understand that indoor pools require specialist design in three major areas: the pool chamber, the building structure and the management of the pool building environment (heating, dehumidification and ventilation). All of these specialisms should be integrated into a consolidated design from the start, to avoid disruptive, complicated and potentially costly alterations after your pool house has been built.

“Swimming has many benefits, as well as the obvious, it improves quality of sleep and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression”

IN YOUR OWN HOME This is where Origin comes in. Simply put, they do it all. Building swimming pools requires a holistic approach with all the key elements working together from the beginning. Origin eliminate the need to employ separate companies by managing the whole process for you, from concept to completion. Access to a pool right on your doorstep means it’s easy to swim and exercise everyday in the privacy and safety of your own home. They’ve been building award winning swimming pools for over 40 years and in that time have successfully completed thousands of pools and pool houses to a wide range of specifications. Swimming has many benefits, as well as the obvious, it improves quality of sleep and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression. Origin believes owning a pool is about more than the pool itself: by adding a spa, sauna or yoga room your swimming pool and pool house could be a centre of wellbeing. If you’re looking to increase family time, your pool house could become a new

social hub for everyone to enjoy by adding a gym, lounge area or even a bar. Whilst jumping in may seem daunting, making the decision will bring you measurable benefits. Whether you’re looking to create a sanctuary in your home or somewhere to just have fun, Origin have experienced it all and are available to help you bring your dream pool to life, managing every stage from start to finish, giving you the confidence and freedom to enjoy finally swimming in your own home. Origin’s experts can discuss requirements, guide you through the options and produce a fully costed proposal and design allowing you to undertake the ultimate home improvement so you can finally achieve the perfect work life balance.

A new concept in outdoor cooking for your best summer ever for outdoor entertaining.

The Charlie Outdoor Charcoal Oven

I

t’s time to take the cover off the BBQ and enjoy the Summer. But will the reality live up to our dreams? well, it all depends on what you’re cooking with. We think of BBQs for warm, sunny days. But we use our BBQs a lot less than we’d like to. In the UK – largely thanks to the weather - the average BBQ is only used five times a year. But with Charlie, it’s always BBQ weather! Its front-opening design minimises heat loss and protects your food from the elements. The cooking is all done in the sealed oven chamber, while the chef can sit indoors, just waiting till Charlie has created its magic, whatever the weather outside. Charlie is totally weatherproof. It’s made in Britain from solid steel, in nine striking colours. It can live and work outdoors all year round. You can use it day in, day out. When we think BBQ, it’s sausages, burgers, maybe steaks. But it so often over-promises and

under-delivers. How about fish, charcoal-grilled with the taste of the Mediterranean? Seafood? Vegetables? Bread? Fruit? Desserts? Pizzas? With Charlie you can do the lot. And add amazing, smoky flavour to whatever food you choose to cook. It’s a BBQ, a pizza oven, a smoker and a grill. With 2.5 times the capacity of a domestic oven. Delight the meat lovers, the vegans, the vegetarians, the pescatarians. Cook vegetables so tasty that even your children will eat them. There’s no need to be an “expert” at BBQ-ing: anyone can use Charlie. Even though it’s inspired by the front-opening charcoal ovens that are the secret of top professional kitchens. We call Charlie, “The Chef Maker”. In many ways, using Charlie is the opposite of BBQ-ing. It’s totally hands-off. No need for constant attention, no face full of smoke and heat. You can set Charlie from 100°c for low ‘n’ slow, up to 500°c for incredibly fast searing of meat or pizzas. Easy peasy. Just put in your food and Charlie will create the magic for you! Sit back. Relax. Enjoy looking at your beautiful oven. Enjoy the incredible food. Enjoy the sunshine….but enjoy The Charlie Outdoor Charcoal Oven all year round! charlieoven.com @charliecharcoaloven 8 8 M AY 2 0 2 2

How to turn your garden into a

SPA SANCTUARY

Take inspiration from Chelsea designer Kate Gould’s ultra-zen creation, says Hannah Stephenson.

I

magine the setting – a cornucopia of tropical planting shadowing a hidden oasis of calm, replete with hot tub, comfortable loungers, subtle lanterns and tea lights dotted around, and the scent of jasmine in the air. This might seem like an unrealistic aspiration of how to create the perfect garden sanctuary, especially if you have a small space. But if you’re able to include just a few of these features in your outdoor space – which all star in Chelsea garden designer Kate Gould’s ‘Out Of The Shadows’ sanctuary garden this year – you could be on the road to zen. Gould’s creation is a lesson in how post-pandemic gardens are being asked to work harder for us than ever. Not only to grow plants but to provide an outdoor extension to our homes, where we can relax, exercise, entertain and eat. “The RHS has a category called Sanctuary Gardens and it’s my interpretation of what coming out of Covid was, in terms of clients making their gardens safe, usable and able to exercise in and gather in small numbers,” says Gould. The garden features a stateof-the-art jacuzzi swim spa, spaces for seating and relaxation, climbing bars, and a yoga/ meditation space all elegantly situated among dramatic and exotic, tropical-style planting. Here, Gould offers a few pointers on how to create your own garden sanctuary…

9 0 M AY 2 0 2 2

PLANTS ARE KEY “My idea of sanctuary would be digging a big hole and gardening. If you are talking about creating a spa feeling, it’s more than anything about the plants,” she says. “If you want to use a spa all year, a lot of the plants will have to be evergreen, which either leads you down a supermarket car park look, which you don’t want, or a more tropical look using palms, ferns, leafy perennials, or other plants which will give you that lush green look.” Gould’s Chelsea garden features palm trees, bamboo, false pepper trees and ferns. White or blue flowers will pop out in the sunnier aspect at the front, but the whole effect is a subtle, muted palette.

CREATE A CANOPY If you have a tree fern, you could be nestled under a canopy to make the area feel really private.

USE SUBTLE LIGHTING “You can light the canopy beautifully, because all those plants light beautifully at night. Really simple uplighters are very effective at lighting trees and

don’t necessarily cost the earth. You also don’t have to see them,” says Gould. “Then you have decorative lights like standard lamps and lanterns, floor-mounted objects which look amazing and you can just layer it up. The only thing you really want is to make sure, if you are using electrics, is that somebody qualified installs it for you.”

CONSIDER AN OUTDOOR SHOWER On hot, balmy summer days or nights, an openair shower might be just the ticket – but get a professional to install it for you. Create privacy by sheltering it with plants, Gould suggests.

GIVE YOURSELF SPACE TO STRETCH “In the Chelsea garden I’ve designed, there’s space to do some yoga to relax or meditate, even though the space is only 10m by 10m. We have a very light gravel area and you’d have a dense yoga mat on top of it. It’s surrounded by bamboo and tree ferns and acers so it feels very quiet.”

can swim against – says Gould, whose Chelsea garden will be incorporating one of these. “The spa becomes not only something you can sit in for relaxation, but you can exercise in it,” she notes. “Water’s like Marmite – you either love it or hate it. If you have a spa, you can get in it and sit there in the bubbles, and maybe drink bubbles when you’re in it. Alternatively, a still pool of water can reflect. “But you could equally have a sculpture or a firepit, which is less to maintain and might aesthetically fit the garden and doesn’t necessarily need the upkeep that a water feature would.”

MAKE COSY SEATING AREAS “This has changed over the years. If you have a large area and can really customise it, you could make it long and low and really comfortable with cushions. But remember you will have to put the cushions away in the winter,” says Gould. “Otherwise, there are many other lovely furniture options to choose from. Modular sofas can be assembled in the configuration you want [and many] come with waterproof covers. “Spas tend to want to be relaxing, so if you choose colours which uplift you, such as reds and yellows, you’d probably avoid those. Go with gentle blues, greys and greens because that will also reflect the planting.”

WHAT ABOUT WATER? With Covid, more people are investing in their gardens, which means they might put in a swim spa – a large jacuzzi with a current in it which you

SCENT-SATIONAL PLANTS

“In the Chelsea garden I’ve designed, there’s space to do some yoga to relax or meditate, even though the space is only 10m by 10m”

“The best one for this is Chinese jasmine (trachelospermum), which has lovely glossy evergreen foliage which flowers in the winter. You could also have Christmas box. If you have lots of pots and a bit of sunshine, you could plant pittosporum, which smells like holidays,” says Gould. “You probably wouldn’t want to mix your messages, so if you are going down a leafy, tropical theme, you are not going to want to put lavender in.”

SPRUCE UP YOUR GARDEN FURNITURE READY FOR SUMMER

C

Time to transform tired seating, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

hances are, you can’t wait to get a head start on your garden, with longer, brighter evenings and warmer weather on the cards. One thing that might prove tricky is outdoor furniture. Even if you’re lucky enough to have a garden shed to store stuff, cobwebs, mildew, dust, dirt and leaves might have soiled soft furnishings – and anything in the open air will have taken a beating. Sound familiar? Here’s how to give your furniture a facelift…

Set the scene First, have a general tidy up. “Just as you would inside your home when tackling a little spring clean, clear the clutter,” says Wayfair’s resident style advisor Nadia McCowan Hill (wayfair.co.uk). “A quick brush of the patio or sweep of the decking to remove fallen leaves and general dust and debris will help revitalise the area. Pressure washers come into their own this time of year, for fast action cleaning with impressive results.” Whether it’s hosing down the walls or mowing the lawn, take this opportunity to think about how your furniture will be framed.

Tackle your furniture “For rattan furniture, you can always try dipping an old toothbrush into the soapy water to scrub away any dirt, and allow to dry in the sunshine”

9 2 M AY 2 0 2 2

“Before starting any restoration work, it’s a good idea to give it a thorough clean – this can make a world of difference to furniture that’s gathered dirt during the winter,” says Holly Sambells, Christow’s home and garden guru (christowhome.co.uk). “Use warm, soapy water with sponges and brushes to give your furniture a deep clean.” Ben Thornborough, co-founder of Thorndown Paints (thorndown.co.uk), agrees: “If your furniture is old, make sure the surface is thoroughly cleaned. Wash off any dirt with soapy water or use a pressure washer. Washing with a light bleach and water solution will also help to kill off algae.” For rattan furniture, you can always try dipping an old toothbrush into the soapy water to scrub away any dirt, and allow to dry in the sunshine.

Get rid of rusty stains Harsh weather conditions can can take their toll on heavy pieces. “The wind, rain and humidity of colder seasons will have likely caused metal to corrode, building a layer of rust on the surface,” notes Jon Sharpe, chief creative officer at LuxDeco (luxdeco.com). “Luckily, there are simple home remedies that can remove rust and return your furniture to its former glory. Simply use white vinegar and pour it evenly on the affected areas. Leave it to sit for a while, then wipe away once the product has worked its magic.”

Metal effects

Prepare tables and chairs “Preparation is key when it comes to the perfect finish, so before you consider painting your old, tired furniture, sand off any rough patches or loose old coatings that will show or affect the finish,” suggests Thornborough. “Wooden furniture may need preserving with a wood preserver. If your furniture is made with treated softwood, remove any surface residue from the pressure treatment process.”

Take your time with painting “Don’t rush to start your paint job. Make sure your wood is dry, otherwise coatings won’t fix properly to the timber, affecting the paint’s performance and longevity,” advises Thornborough. “To ensure the perfect finish, apply a knotting agent or stain-blocking primer to prevent possible tannin staining of the paint coating. However, if you’re a fan of all things natural, don’t worry about it and let nature take its course. “If there’s any rust on fixings, treat the metal surfaces or use paint with flash rust inhibitor, to stop rust from forming on non-galvanised metal or metal screws and nails (other than stainless steel).” And before you start painting, Thornborough adds: “Check the weather to make sure rain isn’t forecast for at least 24 hours. This will allow plenty of time for the paint to dry and fix/bond properly.” 9 4 M AY 2 0 2 2

For a pop of colour, Annie Sloan (anniesloan. com) Chalk Paint is a go-to for all exterior paint jobs, including metal dining chairs and tables. For extra durability, sand the area and treat with a rust inhibitor before painting. Annie Sloan English Yellow is especially cheerful styled with jugs of daffodils spilling over.

Wash cushion covers Even though they’ve been weather-proofed, soft outdoor furnishings will still need some TLC. As Sharpe points out, some will have simply picked up a stale smell from being packed away so long. “Wash on a low heat and use a gentle setting to ensure they keep their size and shape, and don’t tumble dry,” he says. “Use the upcoming sunny weather to let the covers dry outdoors before putting them back on.”

The final flourishes “With the recent storms, many parasols might have been damaged,” says Sambells. Rather than buying new, she suggests buying a fresh canopy to put on an existing frame – a more sustainable option, and a win-win if there’s nothing wrong with the frame. Likewise, a sofa set, bench or hanging chair can be transformed with a cushion update. “A cost-effective way to make an impact, rather than replacing the whole set,” says McCowan Hill. “A different colour or pattern will give existing furniture a whole new look. “Make a focal point of seating areas with a splash of colour, or choose bright contemporary whites to reflect the sunshine. A few smaller stylish decorative touches, like outdoor lanterns and a change in plant pots, can make a big difference to the overall finished look.”

MORE INSPIRATION For more inspiration, check out websites such as Celina Digby (celinadigby.co.uk) – it has a great garden range of water resistant garden cushions (starting from £29.99) and matching tablecloths (from £49.99).

It’s Time To Get Your

Nature Fix A

t first glance, modern life seems to come with all the bells and whistles. There is the internet, for one, coupled with apps that mean you can now easily summon a packet of raspberries for midnight pavlova cravings. But it also seems to be accompanied by an undeniable twitchyness. Finding focus is harder than ever. And our senses simultaneously duller as we overindulge on the images fed by screens. Some concerned have inaugurated digital detoxes. Or set up ambitious limits on screen time. And yet there is a third way for those who don’t wish to swear off their social media entirely. Known in Japan as forest bathing, it involves the kind of regular immersion in nature that our ancestors would have recognised. Or, as the Finnish government is now prescribing, at least 5 hours per month spent exploring landscapes that are lush and living. Making sure we get our nature fix is an argument that’s eloquently been explored in a new book by Florence Williams. Over the course of 300 pages, she reveals how, in the open-endedness of nature, creativity soars, worry subsides and we become our most 1 0 4 M AY 2 0 2 2

“civic-minded selves”. A heartening notion, until she drops the bombshell that we Brits spend on average just 7% of our day outside. Part of the problem, we learn, is an overbearing culture of office life and commuting. But as we inch closer to a world of hybrid work and a fourday working week, we have a unique opportunity

“As we inch closer to a world of hybrid work and a four-day working week, we have a unique opportunity to make life outdoors a permanent fixture”

to make life outdoors a permanent fixture. Meeting us there is an eclectic mix of designers, each of which have been busy developing avantgarde furnishings that help us live outdoors with new fullness and serendipity. At Cane-Line this looks like the invention of quick-drying cushions — each fully ready for use just 60 minutes after a downpour. Flexform, meanwhile, have focused on bringing the icons of their lounge catalogue out, setting the stage for an al fresco experience that prioritises both comfort and quality. “For aeons, outdoor furniture was characterised by plastic or timber,” says Ludovic Aublanc, Creative Director at Chaplins. “Wonderfully resistant materials, it’s true, but not always the most inviting thing to sit on. These brands have changed all that. In taking the time to understand the way people live and lounge, they’ve brought the living room into the garden, allowing us to sink into new rhythms and rituals.” With many of these luxury

designs, it’s also about what the eye can’t see. Advances in both foam and fabric technology mean that these new sumptuous styles are virtually impervious to the elements. “You can be a bit lazy now,” explains designer Patrick Jouin in a recent Architonic interview. “Outside used to be rough — simplistic almost — but now you can indulge more. You can leave your furniture out in the rain for two weeks without covering them.” And when the sun does come out to play? You can enjoy the outdoors like never before. Indulging in all the magic that is dinner beneath a canopy of stars. Or else that delicious morning coffee, nestled in a lovely lounge chair on the patio. Simple pleasures — it’s true — but ones that help anchor us to the world and everything in it. Did you promise that 2022 would be the year you spent more time outdoors? Then why not pay our Hatch End showroom a visit? As well as our dedicated outdoor living studios, you can also take advantage of our exterior design service — offered in conjunction with garden design specialists Pen & Barrow — and which has the power to transform any al fresco space into an unprecedented Eden.

Van Gogh Art Remastered as Wallpaper Patterns

T

wo of Van Gogh’s most famous artworks have been remastered as stunning wallpapers by design studio Bobbi Beck. Starry Night and Almond Blossom have provided the inspiration for the wallpaper designs which were created by taking motifs from the artworks and carefully crafting them into seamless repeat patterns. The artworks were painted between 1889 -1890 and are now 132 years old, but remain popular across art, design and pop culture. Now, through clever design, the artworks can be enjoyed across all four walls of the room. Bobbi Beck is a design & print studio specialising in sustainably-made luxury wallpaper.

Providing wallpaper for both homes and commercial spaces, the company is based in Cornwall UK. The studio makes its products to order, using PVC and metallic-free paper from FSC-certified forests. All inks are water-based and non-toxic and packaging is 100% plastic-free and fully recyclable. bobbibeck.com 1 1 4 M AY 2 0 2 2
