Guildford Symphony Orchestra Presents Beethoven And The Emperor and beauty too. The nickname allegedly arose from a comment by one of Napoleon’s officers stationed in Vienna that it was ‘an emperor of a concerto’. The theme of empire runs through the concert. The programme opens with Finlandia, Op 26 a symphonic poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It was written in 1899 as a covert protest against increasing censorship by the Russian Empire. Most of the piece is taken up with rousing and turbulent music, evoking the national struggle of the Finnish people, before leading into the serenely melodic Finlandia Hymn. The final work in the concert was written in the twilight of the British Empire. William Walton’s 1st Symphony composed in 1934 paints a vivid musical picture of a young man’s emotional turmoil at the break-up of an intense relationship and the ecstacy of falling in love all over again. Walton intended to ‘blow his contemporary composers out of the water’ with this symphony and the volcanic eruption of searing, emotion with its contrasting, wildly celebratory, final movement with its echoes of Elgar, certainly did just that.
U
nited by a passion for playing classical music, a motley collection of doctors, teachers, students, scientists, lawyers, mothers, grandparents and more gather every week to play in Guildford Symphony Orchestra. This community orchestra is the oldest, and the only surviving, orchestra in the borough. It performs to a high standard under the exacting direction of conductor Darrell Davison and its 97th season of five very varied concerts is looking exciting. After launching the season on October 4 with a family concert for all generations: It’s Magic, at Guildford Spectrum, the orchestra is now gearing up for the first of its major events at G Live on November 21. Beethoven’s grand tour de force, the Emperor Concerto, will be the high spot of this super programme which includes Sibelius’s Finlandia and Walton’s Symphony No 1. The soloist for the Beethoven is Peter Foggitt, pianist, organist, composer, singer and conductor, who will bring fantastic all-round musicianship to his interpretation of this very popular piano concerto that breaks the bounds of the Classical and looks towards the Romantic Movement. Peter is famous for his improvisation skills. Acclaimed at the age of seventeen for his ‘stunning... fire-breathing virtuosity’ in extemporisation, he is equally comfortable in classical and contemporary styles, working with jazz trios and improvising classical fugues. His ‘Emperor’ will definitely breathe fire! Every portrait of Beethoven implies a composer of tempestuous, brooding and muscular music. But his final piano Concerto No 5, ‘the Emperor’, reveals tenderness

Festive Family Fun with Santa Bring the whole family along to jog, run or walk this year’s Santa Fun Runs to raise sponsorship money for Princess Alice Hospice.

ast becoming a fun, festive, family tradition; donning a Santa suit, complete with a big white beard, is guaranteed to make you feel all Christmassy and in the seasonal spirit of giving you’ll be raising money for a fantastic cause. The first of the Santa Fun Runs will be at Bushy Park on Sunday 29 November at 10.30am. A further two runs will be taking place at Richmond Park on Sunday 13th December at 10.30am and 12.30pm. In previous years Santas have ranged from as young as 10 weeks old in a baby carrier to those in their eighties. The event is now in its eighth year and the target is to smash last year’s total of £44,000 which will be used to care for patients and their families during the Festive Season; both in the Hospice and in their own homes. The first Santa to cross the line at Bushy Park last year was Cameron Gibson, 15, from Horsley. Cameron said: “I did the run last year but I was a lot faster this time. It was really weird being chased by all those Santas. “I registered for the event because I appreciate the work the Hospice carers do and I wanted to do my bit to support them.” Cameron was shortly followed at the finish by his younger brother Joseph Gibson, 11, who was the first under 12 to complete the run. Joseph said: “Winning was never really in my mind. I was just looking to do a good run for a good cause and raise a bit of money so the Hospice can continue to do

their fantastic work.” The first Santa to cross last year’s finish line at Richmond Park was Nick McKay, 36, from Wimbledon who successfully defended his title, winning for the third year in a row. He was running the event in memory of his sister-in-law, Jo Crossfield, who was cared for by the Hospice in 2010. Nick said: ““The run has become an annual festive family event for us and my young son was also able to take part too from the comfort of his buggy.” Mia Patterson from the Hospice’s Fundraising Team said: “Taking part in our Santa Fun Runs to raise money for the Hospice has become a tradition now in many households, with families raising huge amounts of money for us. “They are lots of fun and it really is an incredible sight to see hundreds of Santas running across the Royal Parks. ““Places are limited, so it’s best to register as soon as possible. The cost to enter for over 12’s is £12 and for this you’ll receive a Santa Suit. For the under 12’s it’s £6 and they will receive Reindeer Antlers.” THE DETAILS For further details and to enter please contact the Princess Alice Hospice Fundraising Team on 01372 461808 supportercare@pah.org.uk www.pah.org.uk

Autumn comes to Windsor
O
n a global scale it is one of ‘nature’s great events’ as deciduous forests of the northern hemisphere lose their leaves and produce spectacular colours. But there’s no need to travel overseas when hickories, larches, birches and Japanese maples from around the world are right here, close to home. Expectations for a stunning autumn show are very high. A combination of weather conditions throughout 2015 and the immense diversity of the ornamental plant collections held in The Savill and Valley Gardens, are the perfect ingredients for a memorable season.

The top six ways to enjoy autumn on your doorstep:
• Seek out colour. Japanese maples are the backbone of the Savill Garden displays and can be found in many different forms. Autumn Wood offers glades of vibrant colour while drifts of coppery coloured Royal Ferns clothe the banks of the ponds. Feathery ornamental grasses sparkle in the autumn sun and masses of golden dogwoods all come to prominence. An added bonus, Sculpture in the Garden sees over 40 pieces inspired by the Natural World installed until 01 November. • Follow a nature trail. The Windsor Great Park Autumn Trail is a fun way for children to explore nature, collect
Great Park leaves and look for signs of wildlife around Obelisk Pond. Special trail packs cost £3.50 per child and are available from the Savill Building from 24 October - 01 November, 10am - 4pm. Normal car park charges apply. • Take a refreshing walk. In the Valley Gardens and discover an ornamental forest alight with russets, purples, reds, oranges and yellows with maples, sweet gums and birches centre-stage against the evergreen background of numerous conifers. • Kick up leaves. The Beeches area beside Virginia Water drop their colourful leaves on paths leading down to the waterside and a fine vista over the lake.
• Explore in style. Horse-drawn carriage rides around Windsor Great Park evoke a bygone age. Carriages seat six people in comfort and trips cover 30 or 60 minutes duration, operated by Ascot Carriages and Orchard Poyle. • Steer clear of the deer. Autumn is rutting season, when red deer stags fight for dominance of the herd in the Deer Park. As mighty roars echo across parkland, legend has it they are calling to Herne the Huntsman. Don’t forget to visit the award winning Savill Building made from locally grown larch wood. Excellent visitor facilities include a self-service restaurant, café, gift shop and gallery. www.windsorgreatpark.co.uk

Giggling Squid
announces Esher opening First site inside M25 for Thai tapas concept
T
he growing Giggling Squid family of Thai restaurants is to open in Esher on 17th November. Located at 58 High Street on the former Carluccio’s site, this will be the familyrun group’s third site in Surrey site – and its first inside the M25. Following a £100,000 refit the 120 cover restaurant will create around 20 jobs. The company will create more jobs in Surrey when it establishes a group headquarters in Guildford, where it opened a branch in August, later this year. The company will recruit a financial director and finance team, an area manager, executive and development chefs plus posts in human resources, training and marketing. The first Surrey Giggling Squid was opened in Reigate in July 2013 Esher is at the centre of the Elmbridge Borough of Surrey, which, according to reports, pays more income tax than the whole of Scotland and the North of England combined. “Despite the well-heeled customer base, we felt the area really lacked for good places to eat,” said Pranee Laurillard who co owns the restaurant group with her husband Andrew, and added, “We lived a few miles down the road in Oxshott for a couple of years and usually ended up in Wimbledon when we wanted something decent.” The Laurillards have since moved to Merrow, on the outskirts of Guildford. Andrew runs the property management, marketing and financial side of things, while Pranee who left her native Thailand to take her a masters degree, takes care of restaurant design, operations and staff management. Giggling Squid opened in Guildford in August. Andrew is currently negotiating on three more sites in the county. These will be larger than existing branches; such is the demand for their food. The people of Surrey have really taken to the Giggling Squid brand of authentic, rustic Thai food, to the extent that the restaurants are busy for lunch and dinner services throughout the week. Only a hopeless optimist would try to secure a table at a weekend without pre booking. The food, prepared on site from scratch by skilled chefs, using fresh ingredients is especially popular with health conscious ‘yummy’ mummies’ and ‘ladies who lunch’. The restaurants also benefit from the vibrant local economy and frequented at lunch time by high numbers of office
1 6 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 5
workers who work nearby, rather than having to rely on the evening trade of commuters. Questioned as why she feels Surrey, apart from the occasional Michelin star and some decent gastro pubs, is punching below its weight in culinary terms, Pranee Laurillard cites several reasons. “The high rents don’t help nor does the close proximity to the capital – talented young chefs want to make a name for themselves in London. “And despite the best efforts of some artisan producers and farmers’ markets – perhaps Surrey does not have a strong food identity with specific produce, in the same way that, say, Kent or Cornwall have,” she said. However, the Laurillards feel that the local restaurant scene is changing fast. Speaking to industry analysts, commercial estate agents, the trade press and other restaurateurs – it transpires there are number of big names running the rule over the area. Giggling Squid, it is believed, is at the vanguard of on influx of higher end restaurants that are coming to Guildford over the next few years.

TRADITIONAL BUTCHERY WITH A MODERN TWIST
I
n the highly sought after village of Oxshott sits a very traditional butchers shop, sadly becoming increasingly rare these days. We spoke with Simon Taylor, patron butcher of Surrey Hills Butchers, to see why his butchers is going from strength to strength. “We pride ourselves on being traditional as well as moving with the times. I have learnt from some very traditional butchers and I use these teachings and then apply forward- thinking to create twists on classics”. Simon says that not only do they still offer classic cuts for the classic cook but they are willing to do more of the leg work in almost creating ready meals. “We make a lot of ready to go products these days like stir-fry and handmade chicken kievs ready to cook”. Simon has worked in traditional butcher shops since the age of thirteen meaning he has seen the trade move for over twenty years and has been running his own for the past four. “Butcher shop numbers do worry me as they have been in decline for decades, and all we can do really is keep trying to educate people that it is far more natural to buy what you can actually see”. Simon went on to say our “disconnection” from meat was the real cause of the horse-meat scandal, not being able to see or trust what is happening behind closed doors. He believes in old school face to face transactions where people can ask questions and more importantly see what is happening to their food. He goes on to explain “Here at Surrey Hills Butchers we always try to use as much local produce as we can. We do of course have standards, we like to meet these standards and keep the produce local wherever possible. It is always a pleasure dealing with farmers and their families as well as market men. We are very lucky to have some great farmers around us and to be based next door to the Surrey Hills. As well as having a 4th generation market man at Smithfield on our side. We mix with the sort of people who care about their livestock; from field to plate starts very much with the farmer. Every step of our food’s journey is important, from how the animal is fed to how it is slaughtered. Not to mention how it is butchered and cooked!”
1 8 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 5
The newest battle for Surrey Hills Butchers is the new research into cancer-causing preservatives. Even though this has been thought to be the case for a long time, The World Health Organisation now say there is a direct link between processed meats and cancer. He says “I think we do need to be careful with how this is worded and how we explain processed meat… I think new guide lines and clearer information need to be given out to butchers and alike as quickly as possible”. Although Simon claims to be no scientist himself I wonder if he had seen this coming telling me that at Surrey Hills Butchers they have been making a range of preservative free sausages and burgers for a long time. I certainly would not be surprised if he sees a big uptake in those. “This all goes back to being open again, having that relationship with our customers, we can actually talk to each other and look at the options available to them”. In speaking with Simon on these issues I feel he is indeed very traditional yet also young enough to move with modern times and give advice. I don’t think this latest test will stop him moving forward. To end our chat I asked him what the future holds for Surrey Hills Butchers. “Although I have done this for a long time I know the world of food moves daily. I will always go forward being open and ready to be reeducated”.

rooklands Museum will take on a camouflaged air on Sunday 15th November as scores of assorted vehicles ranging from armoured cars to troop carriers and motorcycles from all eras congregate for the Museum’s 13th annual Military Vehicles Day. Among the fleets of Jeeps and Land Rovers setting up base for the day at the 32-acre site in Weybridge, Surrey will be a Commer Q4 troop carrier and a pair of amphibious 6-wheel-drive Alvis Stalwarts. These fivetonne load carriers from the 1960s, along with their sister vehicles Saracen, Salamander and Saladin, were known for their exceptional versatility off-road and through water. Another household automotive name is Daimler, which will be represented by some Ferret Scout cars used for reconnaissance in the 1950s. The event attracts vehicle designs from across the globe: booked to attend are a WWII German signals van, restored to its original condition and a Fiat Topolino which was once owned by leading aviation figure and founding Chairman of Brooklands Museum, Sir Peter Masefield. The white Fiat featured in the 1954 movie The Dam Busters in a scene depicting Barnes Wallis visiting Weybridge, where
From noon a beautifully-restored Routemaster bus from London Bus Museum will take groups of spectators to a viewing area it can be clearly seen in the background outside an aircraft hangar. This links it directly back to Brooklands, where Wallis ran the Vickers Research &Development department after the War in the Clubhouse and where he built the Stratosphere Chamber, which Museum visitors can see today. Based in and around the Paddock area will be re-enactors representing military personnel demonstrating their equipment and always keen to speak to visitors about their areas of expertise. The Luftwaffe, Russian group Defenders of the Motherland and Normandy 44 as well as Winston Churchill (courtesy of Stan ‘Winstan’ Streather) and Field Marshal Montgomery will all be represented together with Staff Cars and RAF personnel. At 11am a two-minute silence across the site will be heralded by a bugler while from noon a beautifully-restored Routemaster bus from London Bus Museum will take groups of spectators to a viewing area alongside the offroad course at neighbouring Mercedes-Benz World, where some of the lighter military vehicles will be put through their paces on the tricky terrain. Later on, at 2.15pm back over on the Museum site, they will line up to tackle the steep incline of Test Hill. The Museum’s collections of cars, motorcycles and aircraft will be open as usual and visitors will be able to discover how Brooklands was involved in both World
Wars through aircraft and weapon design, testing and manufacture. Concorde Experiences will be available too and the Museum Shop will be packed with games, toys, books, DVDs and other memorabilia. The Sunbeam Café will be open, together with a barbeque, and running all day will be three dynamic rides in the 4D Theatre enabling visitors to race around the original Brooklands track, fly with the Red Arrows or lap LeMans with racing legend Mike Hawthorn in his D-Type Jaguar. As a special Autumn offer, rides in the 4D Theatre will be just £3 each for adults and £2 for children.

CoolSculpting is approved by the FDA (USA Food&Drink Administration) and has a fantastic track record of success with more than 1 million treatments performed worldwide. One of the biggest advantages of CoolSculpting is that it is non-invasive. This minimises the patient’s discomfort both during and after the treatment. In addition, CoolSculpting’s same-day recovery makes it easy to fit an appointment into your diary. Prior to a CoolSculpting treatment at the Light Touch Clinic, all patients are invited to a consultation with one of our CoolSculpting experts. Why Light Touch Clinic?
• Our team have attended CoolSculpting University • Performed hundreds of treatments with fantastic results • Beautiful clinic with 5 star service • Bespoke treatment plans which match the patient’s goals and body type.
What about downtime? Afterwards the area that has been treated feels solid to the touch, but within 10 minutes resumes a normal texture. The area may feel slightly bruised and tender for up to 10 days.
What areas does it work best on? The ideal candidate is within two stone of their ideal body weight with pockets of pinch-able soft fat on the abdomen, flanks, back, upper arms and inner thighs. One treatment is usually enough to result in a permanent reduction in fat. A treatment plan includes a review after 12 weeks when the fat cells will have fully broken down.
How long do the results last? CoolSculpting destroys fat cells permanently. Providing you maintain your weight with a normal diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable.

ProSkin Clinics Breaking boundaries in the fight against ageing… Introducing the latest in Anti-Ageing skin treatments – PicoSure Skin Revitalisation with combined treatments
A
ward winning clinic chain, ProSkin, have introduced a revolutionary new course of treatments by combining the award winning PicoSure skin revitalization laser treatment with a series of other advanced skin treatments such as Dermaroller, Injectables or chemical peels; dramatically increasing the results that you can expect. PicoSure Skin Revitalisation can diminish the deepest lines and take years off your skin — with minimal downtime, and with long-lasting results – and without the concerns and side effects associated with surgical face-lifts. Combined with a secondary treatment, the results can be even more impressive by targeting even more of your antiageing and skin concerns. The options include:
PicoSure & Injectables
PicoSure combined with injectables such as Botox or fillers will produce the most effective results for ‘dynamic’ lines; that is, lines that are caused by muscle contractions, commonly found around the eyes and forehead. Botox is administered to the problem areas and PicoSure is carried out two weeks later to address the overall complexion. You can expect smooth, healthy and glowing skin!
PicoSure & Dermaroller
The combination of PicoSure with Dermaroller will yield incredible results for acne scarring, even severely pitted skin will respond quickly and effectively. The combination also works wonderfully at targeting anti-ageing concerns due to the collagen boosting properties of the treatment. Combined with PicoSure your overall complexion will be smoother, more plumped and more radiant.
PicoSure & Chemical Peel
Skin peels work by removing the damaged outer layers of skin, allowing new skin cells to grow; combined with PicoSure, you can expect faster and more dramatic rejuvenation of skin concerns such as uneven pigmentation, sun damage, acne scarring and ageing. These combined treatments are now available at our Esher Clinic. For more information contact us at reception@proskinclinics.com. Victor Pajak,
I
n our never-ending quest for youthfulness, the fashion accessory that is fast becoming an essential part of every woman’s beauty regime – young or old - is, in fact, not Botox, or an impossibly expensive face cream formula – but hair colour! “Not so long ago, hair colour was all about keeping the grey at bay – or perhaps adding a sun-kissed look – if it wasn’t a colour change,” explains Victor. “But today, people are coming to realise that clever use of colour can in fact take years off you. In the quest to stay youthful-looking, there is no doubt that hair colour is the one product that has the biggest impact on overall appearance.” One of the key things that the right hair colour can do is to enhance and brighten a complexion. “Just as our hair loses pigment as we get older, so too does our skin” explains Victor: “So, steadfastly trying to maintain your natural hair colour as you get older can look too harsh against your paler skin. In your 40’s, most people would look much better going a couple of shades lighter – or at least introducing lighter tones around the face. It gives an instant complexion boost.” Strategically-placed highlights and lowlights can also enhance or play-down various facial features – “a bit like contouring make-up” says Victor. “Depending on where colour is placed, by adding lighter tones or darker tones around the hairline or jawline we can help elongate a round face, or create the illusion of a slimmer face, soften the angles of a square face, or enhance cheek-bones and make a face look more angular.” Colour can also be used to turn a good haircut into an amazing one: “With a long-layered style, for example,
adding highlights can accentuate the different layers,” says Victor: “ Multi-tonal hair colour can give the illusion of volume to any cut; and a sleek sharp bob can be hugely enhanced with a solid all-over colour that really reflects light and adds shine.” Hair colouring to achieve these kinds of results does however require a great deal of skill, knowledge and artistry. “At Headquarters, we’ve invested in advanced colour training for all our colourists,” explains Victor: “In addition, three of our team hold the L’Oreal Colour Specialist degree – putting them in the top 1% of L’Oreal colourists in the UK – and there is always at least one of them available at any time to supervise all our colour work.” Victor believes that every client can be made to look younger and healthier with a bit of clever colouring : “We want people to come up to you and say ‘Wow, you look well’, without actually realising it’s your hair colour that’s taken years off you!”. Lisa Haynes faces autumn with a seasonal complexion brightener...
I
hate autumn. It’s the start of cold, dark months ahead, and this year my face has started to protest about the seasonal change too. To banish my new-found dry patches and dull complexion, I head for a Sothys Oxygenating Seasonal Facial. The five-step treatment uses blueberry and cranberry-enriched products to detoxify and oxygenate skin. The therapist begins by peering closely at my skin with a beaming magnifying mirror to assess the damage. I’m told I have typical combination ‘city skin’, with some congestion and random dry patches, so a facial at this time of year is perfect to hydrate, restore radiance and buff away any dregs of summer tan. My make-up is removed with micellar water and then my face is swathed in hot towels, before a two-in-one mask exfoliant is applied to my face and neck for five minutes. The blueberry and cranberry combination smells fruity but not overpowering, and once removed, my skin feels instantly fresher. Next, a rich, luxuriant modelling cream is used to massage my face. It feels unbelievably relaxing but, at the same time, wakes up my lazy facial muscles. Once again, there’s
a focus on the neck, which the therapist tells me is a commonly neglected area. A thick paste of peel-off mask is applied while my hands and arms are blissfully massaged, then the final step is an oxy-mineral serum that’s smoothed onto my face. I look in the mirror, having de-aged about five years on the treatment bed. The next day, my skin looks even fresher. Autumn, I am officially ready for you. Sothys Oxygenating Seasonal Facials, from £45 for one hour, are available at Sothys salons and spas nationwide. To find your nearest spa, visit www.sothys-uk.co.uk

How is prostate cancer diagnosed?
Prostate cancer does not normally cause any symptoms until there is a reasonable sized tumour within the prostate. If prostate cancer is to be diagnosed early a blood test called the PSA must be undertaken. This can be done at the GP surgery. By doing the blood test whilst a man has no symptoms the cancer may be diagnosed early when it is still curable. However, the PSA blood test may also be high when there is no cancer present or indeed low when there is cancer present and therefore is not an ideal test, but it is currently the best test currently available.
How do we diagnose prostate cancer?
The way we are diagnosing prostate cancer is changing rapidly. In most hospitals in the UK an ultrasound scan is performed via the back passage and biopsies are taken randomly in the prostate at areas where prostate cancer may be found, if it is present. However the cancer cannot be seen with the ultrasound scan and therefore significant

There are a number of new blood or urine tests that are undergoing further evaluation. The aim being to improve on the current blood test (PSA) in identifying patients who have disease that may affect them during their normal lifetime. One such marker is urinary EN2 and we have just started a 500 patient study looking at this test to see if it can help diagnose important cancers in men with a borderline high PSA. It is an exciting time to be in prostate cancer research. Great strides have been taken over the last few years to improve our diagnosis and the treatment of this very common disease. exclusive new range with finishing touches by Linda Barker
W
ren Kitchens is exceptionally proud to present an exclusive range of Linda Barker kitchens, which incorporates the thoughtful finishing touches you’d expect from experienced interior design specialist Linda Barker. The collaboration began back in 2012 when Wren Kitchens donated a kitchen to a family of flood victims, which was shown on a programme that Linda was presenting. Wren started talking to Linda and it soon became clear that they shared the same values; Wren are proud to be a family-owned business, with roots in Yorkshire where Linda herself is also from. Linda admired Wren’s ambition to completely transform the UK kitchen market, and the collaboration blossomed from there, with Linda becoming Wren’s ‘Creative Director’. They soon began working on an exclusive kitchen collection which would provide consumers with the biggest choice of kitchen door styles and colours in the UK. And all manufactured here in the UK at Wren’s own factories in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. This Collection was a year in the making, and was launched to the UK-wide market at the end of 2013. There are eight door styles to explore and 40 sumptuous shades chosen exclusively by Linda herself for her Collection - each available in a gloss, eggshell or matt finish. Traditional dovetail jointing on solid oak drawer boxes reflects the level of quality: another opulent feature unique to the Linda Barker collection, which comes with a lifetime guarantee. Last year Linda had her own Wren kitchen installed in her beautiful Yorkshire home. Linda wanted to make the most of her space, while creating a social environment where she could entertain her family and friends, incorporating the panoramic views through her floor-toceiling windows of the Yorkshire countryside. She chose the Sculptured door style with complementary colour palette, combining Gullwing, Royal Purple and Damson to great effect. “All the internal fittings are beautifully lined in oak, 6 6 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 5
which means I never worry about my cupboard doors being left open. The design maximises the space available and although no structural changes were made I feel as if I have a much bigger, more efficient kitchen with infinitely more storage space.” Linda is now heavily involved with Wren’s Kitchen Designer training at their head office, ‘The Nest’ in North Lincolnshire. At the end of the designers’ 2-week induction, Linda provides a specialist interior design session, encouraging them to experiment with colour and offering advice on everything from kitchen layouts to the latest appliances and trends. Linda has become a part of the Wren family, and she is more than just the ‘face’ of Wren, it’s a synergy that is cemented in her passion for interiors and love of the brand.

Is it time to join the
Conservatory Party?
A
ccording to Wikipedia “a manifesto is a written public declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. It often is political in nature, but may present an individual’s life stance.” If and when replacing a conservatory with a modern thermally efficient double glazed one, or when adding a new bespoke glass extension, be it a conservatory or orangery style, the manifesto in such circumstances is clearly going to be more tailored to one or two individuals tastes, needs and requirements, plus probably the quality of living these 7 2 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 5
individuals want for their family, friends and visitors. Consequently to ensure any new or replacement bespoke conservatory adds valuable high quality living space that is usable 24/7 to your home, here is a brief summary of the Conservatory Party’s manifesto to ensure you get what you expect, and don’t end up with an empty room with an unpleasant living environment:• No conservatory to be too hot in summer and/or too cold in winter • All conservatories must be leak proof, plus as draught proof as possible
Any glass extension to be designed bespoke to your property, so that it looks part of the initial build • All conservatories need to be double glazed with high performing Low E Argon filled sealed units with warm edge spacer bars and soft coat heat retentive glass to prevent too much heat loss or too much solar gain • Any glass extension to be designed bespoke to your property, so that it looks part of the initial build and not an after-thought. • Important that bricks (or render) not only match, but so do the brick courses or render painted same colour as existing dwelling • Be sure of the quality of workmanship and product by visiting reference sites and the installers showroom before placing any order • The glass used in any conservatory must all be toughened safety glass and have a high specification, and when conservatories are south facing, the exterior glass to a have a heat reflective coating • The concrete floor to contain 65mm-100mm deep proven floor insulation such as Celotex or Jabolite • Wherever possible all conservatory roofs to be double glazed with thermally efficient glass and not have noisy and ugly looking polycarbonate • Any side or dwarf walls will conform to current building regulations for extensions and have thermally efficient cavity wall insulation • Every new conservatory should come with a fully comprehensive 10 year parts and labour warranty with no call out charges during the guarantee period that is worth the paper it is written on (so before joining the Conservatory Party it is important to make sure your installer is well established, trustworthy and has a proven reputation for build quality and fulfilling warranties) • All new conservatories must have sufficient ventilation i.e. have enough opening vents on the upright parts, and at least one double glazed roof vent (Larger conservatories will need more than one roof vent) • Conservatories must have enough independent heating so that they are warm and comfortable throughout all winters and on cold summer evenings • Ensure the ground workers, double glazing fitters, plumbers, bricklayers, plasterers are experienced and that the electrician is fully qualified and accredited • All new conservatories being built under permitted development (i.e. without planning permission or Building Regulation Approval) must have compliant exterior doors between the existing property and the new conservatory. Such structures must be under 30 square metres, and not project more than 4m on detached houses and no more than 3m on semi-detached houses. These glass extensions must have walls that are at least
50% double glazed and translucent roof of 70% or more. • Obtain all permissions before ordering, such as Water UK sewer build over agreements, Party Wall Act permission from your neighbour(s) if required, planning permission in relation to Conservation Area, A.N.O.B. or Listed Buildings etc. • Find out about the planning rules and Building Regulations before ordering a new conservatory Consequently, if you do decide to join “the Conservatory Party” and benefit from the extra high quality all year round living space a modern high specification conservatory affords, make sure that your conservatory supplier and installer can and will fulfil every one of the above Conservatory Party manifesto pledges.

to still be a decent focal point. Keeping everything off the floor is a must and switching the door to open outwards, or better still a sliding one will open the space to a fresh perspective. Old tricks like floor to ceiling mirrors behind basins keep on delivering and keeping the space seamless with large format tile and Corian are also great for cutting out countless grout lines and a claustrophobic feel.
West One Bathrooms offers a highly professional sales and design service to suit today’s lifestyle constant supply of new and exciting ranges added to these beautiful showrooms is assured. West One Bathrooms offers a highly professional sales and design service to suit today’s lifestyle. With extensive staff training programmes and continuing investment in new technology, we boast an unparalleled service and product range achieved by dedicated and highly knowledgeable staff. Our aim is to make purchases as streamlined and fulfilling as possible. We asked the Senior Designer at the Oxshott showroom about what to think about when designing/fitting for a small bathroom: Small bathrooms can come in any shape and size and thankfully the industry has gone out of its way to provide a variety of short projection and compact options. The Senior Designer from their Oxshott showroom says: ‘Personally I think defaulting to miniature versions of preferred products can be a mistake, the ergonomics of the room should be the main focal point when choosing the products.’ Quite often a corridor room can give way to a large shower wall to wall at one end, or even doing away with glass altogether in favour of a wet room can allow the basin 8 2 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 5

SHOWER POWER Five top tips for dealing with showers. By Julia Gray, Press Association
Mira Adept BRD+ thermostatic mixer shower, available from mirashowers.co.uk.
1. There are three main types of shower: power, electric and mixer. Power showers are ideal for homes with plenty of hot water, as they take stored hot and cold water and mix it together to create the desired temperature. A built-in pump boosts the flow of water, creating a powerful spray, even if you have low water pressure (a tank-fed, gravitybased water system is required). 2. An electric shower only needs cold water because it heats the water as you shower and so will work even if the boiler isn’t working. These showers are great for homes with limited hot water and will work with any plumbing system. “Electric showers come in a range of kilowatt ratings - go for nine kilowatts or above, as you’ll enjoy a better flow rate,” says Emma Foster from Mira Showers. 3. Mixer showers need a supply of both hot and cold water, and blend them to the required temperature. Mixers are either surface mounted or have valves buried in the wall - the former are usually easier to install, as they fix to the tiled wall, but hidden valves often look nicer. Foster says: “Go for a mixer shower that offers thermostatic control to ensure the temperature stays constant, even when the toilet is flushed.” 4. Digital mixer showers control the flow and temperature of the water digitally, so you can have exactly 8 4 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 5
the same showering experience every time by setting personal preferences. “You can set a maximum and minimum flow rate, as well as temperature,” says Foster. “A digital shower can even be programmed to switch off after a pre-set time, should you have teenagers who spend all day in the shower. Digital showers also have an electronic display that can show the temperature, flow rate and time.” These showers can often be controlled wirelessly from another location, so you can turn the shower on to warm up before you’re even out of bed. 5. If your shower produces little more than a dribble, an electric shower pump should make it more of a deluge, but pumps aren’t compatible with all boilers or the answer for all homes - a power shower is sometimes better. In some older properties, it may be necessary to replace the pipework, especially the pipe bringing in water from the main in the street, to improve the water flow rate. A better boiler and/or hot-water cylinder may also be the answer ask a good heating engineer for advice.

Desirable Homes Developed By Design
Miram House is due to launch in early 2016 and is already the talking point of Hadley Wood. Paul Artemi’s passion, desire and attention to detail are evident in every corner of Miram House. The specification, which is far too long to list, is jaw dropping; only the best of the best make it in to Miram House. Artemi & Gibbs have been successfully developing properties in London for over nine years. Priority is given to the design and construction of all their developments, creating the kind of home we all aspire to live in. Homes that are thoughtful in design, friendly to the environment and built by craftsmen with modern skills and traditional values. Both Paul Artemi and Stephen Gibbs work ‘hands on’ in the business and many of their skilled team have been with them for many years.
They do not sub-contract to third party construction companies and they personally manage each one of their developments from the initial design right through to the handover at completion Unlike many other developers, Artemi & Gibbs are also the builders. They do not sub-contract to third party construction companies and they personally manage each one of their developments from the initial design right through to the handover at completion. This approach ensures they are in full control of every detail of the build, for their peace of mind and yours.

rtemi & Gibbs were awarded Best Residential Development (Hertfordshire) for Miram House, at the 2015-2016 UK Property Awards held at the London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square, Mayfair on the 9th October. Nick Staton and Jenna Dooley of Statons joined Paul Artemi and Stephen Gibbs to help celebrate their success. The developers have always known their development is a cut above the rest, so it was a real honour to be awarded such an accolade to affirm what they already knew. Miram House (Miram from the Latin word for amazing) is a development of six stunning and spacious apartments in Hadley Wood. With bespoke floor-to-ceiling doors, elegantly designed interiors and Hadley Wood’s golf course as its backdrop, these apartments are luxury personified.
