he biggest pregnancy and parenting event of the year, The Baby Show with MadeForMums, is the must-attend event for mums and dads-tobe and new parents, with over 200 exhibitors showcasing all the latest essentials for your new arrival, plus a stage programme jam packed with fashion shows and informative talks by renowned baby care experts. Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a valuable partnership between New Ashgate gallery and Surrey Artists Open Studios. Starting in 2009; this aspirational exhibition offers a collective of local quality fine arts and craft as voted for by the public during their June Surrey open studio visits. The top 10 artists come together for an exhibition at the New Ashgate Gallery. Commissioned by their client to create a glamourous, inviting and luxurious home on the prestigious private estate of St Georges Hill in Weybridge, the design team at Concept Interiors, led by Design Director Samantha Morgan, began working on the schemes whilst the build was still in its initial stages. This was to ensure that the design for the entire property flowed seamlessly throughout each of the spaces, whilst still giving each room its own identity. Get set for sensational colour and fantastic family events at the Royal Horticultural Society’s flagship garden in Surrey as RHS Garden Wisley announces an exciting line-up of autumn events set to inspire and entertain visitors this season. Woodfest, sponsored by STIHL, takes place on 8 – 9 October and features talented exhibitors and demonstrations of traditional woodcraft skills and artisan products, from steam sawing to tree-climbing.

GUILDFORD BOOK FESTIVAL 2016:
Line-Up Announced Organisers of Guildford Book Festival today announce a packed programme for the 2016 Festival, taking place at venues across the town between 9 and 16 October.
H
eading the line-up of more than 50 events this year are: legendary broadcaster Jeremy Paxman sharing his long-awaited and candid memoir; brilliant presenter and comedian Graham Norton discussing his darkly funny debut novel, Holding; much-loved chef Rick Stein; popular cookery writer and food blogger, Ella Mills (née Woodward); and Formula 1 favourite Damon Hill, celebrating the 20th anniversary of winning the World Championship. Among the bestselling fiction writers at the Festival will be Robert Harris, Alison Weir, Anthony Horowitz, S J Parris, and Charles Cumming. The Festival is delighted to be offering a minicreative writing course running over five days, hosted by Rachel Marsh of the University of Surrey, and featuring a different guest speaker each day, while the editor of the Writers & Artists Yearbook will lead a session called How to Get Published. The Children’s programme is also bigger for 2016: Alastair Watson will host wonderfully entertaining shows inspired by the Dinosaur that Pooped a Show and the Wimpy Kid series; bestselling children’s author and illustrator
Britta Teckentrup will introduce her latest character, Oskar and young ornithologists will enjoy Mike Langman’s guide to birdspotting. Funds raised through ticket sales at Guildford Book Festival enable the Festival to deliver an exciting Schools’ Programme. This year local schools will have the opportunity to hear from Rob Biddulph, Jonny Lambert, Susan Moore and Laurel Remington. And, for the first time, the Festival has arranged an event for the Borough’s Brownies and Guides, who will be entertained by Lauren Child talking about the latest adventures of Ruby Redfort. Each year, Guildford Book Festival works in partnership with local community groups and other charities to bring unique and inspirational events to members and prospective members, and to raise awareness of these organisations within Guildford and the surrounding area. The Amnesty International event will this year see the return of Ben Holden and Anthony Holden, this time to share Poems That Make Grown Women Cry; while Festival goers can enjoy an hour of reflection with readings from The Poet’s Quest for God, featuring contemporary poems by writers of all faiths, and none. The Festival also looks forward to working once again with GEDFAS and West Surrey Area NADFAS. Art historians Eric Shanes and Linda Collins will provide insight into Impressionist London at the turn of the 20th century and Art &
Culture in Paris, 1850 – 1930. Commenting, Guildford Book Festival CoDirector Jane Beaton says: “We are delighted that so many authors have agreed to come to Guildford this year. Some, such as Graham Norton and Jeremy Paxman, are household names; others may be largely unknown but have extraordinary stories to tell. Some have spoken at the Festival before, while for others it’s their first ever Festival. We look forward to welcoming them all and to nine days of outstanding conversation and entertainment.” Guildford Book Festival Co-Director Alex Andrews adds: “I am greatly looking forward to welcoming some of the country’s best authors and illustrators to Guildford this year and believe we have something for every taste”.

going underground T hroughout autumn and winter visitors to Hatchlands Park will have the chance to go underground into the cellars beneath the Georgian country house to see spaces which have previously be closed to the public. Perhaps not a traditional visit to a National Trust property, visitors will be asked to pick up a lantern and put on a hard hat, for a guided tour of some of the rooms in the maze beneath the house. Just like the house, the cellars at Hatchlands Park have seen different residents come and go and have been used in a variety of different and, perhaps, surprising ways. Today visitors will be able to see the cellars furnished with memorabilia from the 1940s. During World War II, a convent school was evacuated to Hatchlands Park and the pupils used to take refuge in the basement during the frequent air raids. Five bombs were dropped on or around the estate during the War, and Doodlebugs nearby as well. There were about 90 girls at the school so it would have felt quite crowded in the spaces beneath the house. The children’s novel ‘Piggy’, was loosely based on life at Hatchlands during the war and visitors can hear extracts from the book on the tour of the cellars. Visitors will also be able to hear stories about Mr George Tremlett, the head
gardener during this time and also ARP warden for the school. His son recently visited Hatchlands and shared his memories of growing up in the estate during the war. Visitors can see a picture of him surrounded by girls – he was one of the few boys to attend the school. Of course no country house was complete without a wine cellar and a butler, whose job it was to keep track of the number of bottles consumed by the household. Visitors to Hatchlands will able to see today’s wine cellar and also a picture of the last butler at Hatchlands, Mr Archibald Brewster who had previously been Butler to Lord Gladstone before joining Goodhart-Rendel’s staff at Hatchlands. In the 1960s the Mathew family came to live at Hatchlands and the cellars took on another new and interesting use. The eldest of their 11 children used to secretly hold parties in the cellars to entertain their teenage friends. Visitors today can be transported back to those party years with clips of music from the 1960s. THE DETAILS JThe cellar tours at Hatchlands Park take place on selected days throughout the autumn. Normal admission prices apply – there is no extra charge. Hard hats and lanterns will be provided. Children over 8 years old are welcome. For more information about the tours and accessibility please visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/hatchlands-park or call 01483 222482.

Don’t Panic Tried and Tested Investment Leads the Way Post-Brexit
I
t’s been a volatile period in the markets following the decision by UK voters to leave the European Union and much uncertainty remains, given that we are only just setting out on what is a long and arduous road to Brexit. With the full consequences of Brexit still unknown and an additional layer of complexity added into the equation because we effectively have an entirely new Government in power, investors are, understandably, nervous. At times like these, our challenge as investment specialists is to ensure we are providing exactly the right advice to clients so that they have the best chance to preserve and grow their wealth in what are absolutely unchartered waters. In periods of uncertainty tried and tested investment principles come to the fore.
A proven approach
Tried-and-tested principles are the bedrock of Quilter Cheviot’s investment policy. We focus on: • Global investors: Our investment managers seek the best investment opportunities globally. We don’t limit ourselves to the UK domestic market. This diversification protects against localised shocks. We’re well placed to do this thanks to our well-resourced, fully qualified, dedicated research team, which is devoted to seeking out the best investments wherever they may be. • Diversified asset classes: Investing in fixed-income assets, such as bonds, as well as equities helps to cushion against market volatility. • Diversified sectors: Investing across a broad spectrum of sectors also protects against any shocks in specific industries. For example, we invest in pharmaceuticals, telecoms, beverages, commodities as well as banks and real estate companies. • Planning for the long term: Our investment managers always plan for the long term, rather than for one-off 3 8 O C T O ber 2 0 1 6
events such as the UK referendum on EU membership. It’s important not to be distracted from long-term investment goals by the short-term noise created by the markets. This last point is incredibly important. An investor who been tempted to make sweeping changes to their portfolio, or even cashed it in entirely, ahead of an expected financial storm. Such an investor would have been left licking their wounds.
Confounding the optimists
That’s because carefully chosen investments have since confounded even the most optimistic of views. Reacting to short-term events is ill-advised because it’s not just about guessing the outcome of a vote, it’s also about guessing the market’s reaction to that outcome, and making the right call in these circumstances is often notoriously difficult. Having a regular dialogue and direct line of contact with your investment manager will help to provide that extra level of reassurance required in times of flux. At Quilter Cheviot, clients benefit from a combination of in depth analysis provided by our dedicated research teams, whose sole purpose is to identify, research and evaluate investment opportunities across the whole of market, and the support of an experienced, client facing investment manager to help guide them on their investing journey. The truth is that most advisers can make a fist of investment when times are good and times are certain; it’s only during upheaval that the true mettle of an investment adviser is really tested. And that time is right here and right now. Investors should remember that the value of investments, and the income from them, can go down as well as up and that past performance is no guarantee of future returns. You may not recover what you invest.

London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017 Highlights A world of catwalks, celebrities, and glamour
L pringle of scotland
ondon Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity to showcase some of the world’s leading fashion talent, with the schedule packed with shows, presentations, showrooms, events and parties from the best and brightest names in the industry. As usual, celebrities swarmed to attend the fashion event of the year – including Ellie Goulding, Yasmin Le Bon, Cara Delevingne, Eva Herzigova, Steve McQueen, Daisy Lowe, Fearne Cotton and Samantha Cameron, It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends. The world watches as fashion history is made. While most of us are thinking about our winter wardrobes, designers were showcasing next year’s Spring/Summer Collections. So what does SS17 have in store for us, according to Britain’s most trend-setting brands?
BURBERRY
Burberry opened the doors to Makers House, Soho, its new London Fashion Week venue with the presentation of its inaugural straight-to-consumer collection. The origins of the new men’s and women’s collections, which were shown together for the first time, are found in the spirit of Nancy Lancaster’s interior and garden designs and Virginia Woolf ’s novel ‘Orlando’. Inspired by a reflection on the way a house changes its character over the centuries driven by the people, clothes 4 6 O C TO b E r 2 0 1 6
and cultures that inhabit it, the collection combines noble and authentic fabrics, blending denim and sweatshirting with cashmere and pyjama silks. It blurs masculine and feminine, casual and formal, night and day, all mixed together to create a new reality born of all the moments that have gone before. Highlights from the collection include deconstructed trench coats, regimental capes, coats and jackets (including The Cavalry Jacket, The Military Tailcoat and The Parade Jacket), waisted field jackets (including The Floral Field Jacket), pea coats, pyjama-style trousers, shirts and shorts, and ruffle-neck shirts. Also previewed today was The Bridle Bag, a new runway design for men and women, which takes its inspiration from classic British equestrian designs and Burberry’s outdoor heritage.

• Formed for summer streets • Overdyed denim - blue, forest and brown • D-ring belts, elasticated waists, eyelet fastenings • Rolled back sleeves - simplicity of line • Crisp cotton shaped and pieced in graphic colour • Cocoa, Tomato, Lime and Navy • Sun-dressed linen cut to pleat and gather • Deckchair stripes back with white.

infused with detail from its rich heritage, but nonetheless made for thoroughly modern lives. For new season neutrals, read: naturals. in keeping with the ruggedness of summer in the highlands, textures are as raw as possible, with a suite of pieces crafted in a knitted version of pringle’s woven summer yarn, with supporting linen and cotton staples in complementary tones. indigo adds depth to the palette, using natural dyes to create a rich hue for a summery alternative to black. flashes of vivid brights, stripes and contrast trims reference decades of sporting heritage, bringing the tennis and golfing knits of the 1930s up to date with block-coloured skirts, tops and classic cardigans.
“We can now look forward to the designer trends hitting the high streets for Spring/ Summer 2017, and re-create the look so stylishly presented on the catwalk” TEMPERLEY LONDON
Their Summer 2017 collection celebrates the new desert rainbow tribe, exploring a girls desire for escapism with rich sunset colours and iridescent glimmers. They follow her dreams of the other world through the lens of a desert mirage. Hand painted surrealist prints on fluid silk habotai and seersucker chiffon followed by effortless one shouldered drape dresses in a sunset inspired ombre palette. Modern tapestry jacquard with eclectic stripes layered with folk inspired prints and stitch work with magical creatures and surreal elements. Psychedelic waves of rainbow sequin embroidery, kaleidoscopic sun-bleached colours and maypole inspired streamers emanate energy and optimism. Louche tailoring paired with feminine leopard metallic fil coupe chiffon ruffles. Eveningwear adorned with iridescent sequins interspersed with whimsical flowers, cupped clear sequins and tubular beads in a leopard
formation. Embellished tulles and organzas in a spectrum of soft colours channeling the spirit of dreamcatchers.
SOPHIA WEBSTER
Spring/Summer 2017 Sophia Webster exudes attitude, exploring a tropical colour palette against a backdrop of iconic 60’s musical influences. Vibrant prints and delicate embellishments navigate us through the wonderful world of the ‘Dolly Birds Of Paradise’. This collection celebrates my love of music, in particular the original Dreamgirls: Diana Ross and The Supremes, The Shirelles and Martha Reeves and The Vandellas - all musical icons of the 60’s. My inspiration was ‘Dreamgirls’ meets Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’s set within a tropical paradise. This concept enabled me to experiment with the distinctive and feminine shapes of the 60’s in bright, vivid colours and an array of different textures’. Sophia Webster
HOUSE OF HOLLAND
• A chaotic sense of freedom. • Josef Koudelka’s photography of Gypsy communities from the Eastern Bloc. • Noa Eshkol patchwork art. • Frills, flounce, florals and flare. • Embroidered netting negligee, punchy gingham shirting and graphic sequin embellishment. 2016 is a landmark year for House of Holland as the brand celebrates its 10 year history. To mark this milestone, House of Holland have brought back the iconic Fashion Groupie t-shirts that launched the brand in 2006. These re-editions feature rhyming slogans of today’s It Girls and designers, such as – ‘Let get obscene Cara Delevingne’ and ‘I’m yours for a tenner Kendall Jenner’. The collection will be available to purchase from www.houseofholland.co.uk & key retailers including Browns, Luisa Via Roma, Matches, Net-a-Porter and Selfridges We can now look forward to the designer trends hitting the high streets for Spring/Summer 2017, and re-create the look so stylishly presented on the catwalk. www.londonfashionweek.co.uk O C T O ber 2 0 1 6 4 7

Veganism has seen a huge surge over the last 10 years, with nearly 550,000 people now saying they follow a dairy and meat-free diet, compared with 150,000 in 2006, according to The Vegan Society. By Katie Wright, Press Association

owered by (what else?) social media and the ‘clean eating’ movement, more young people are ditching animal products (67% of vegans are under 34), and that includes cosmetics. But even if you scour ingredients lists, it can be hard to know what’s safe and what’s not. Beeswax and honey, for instance, are obviously creature-derived, but did you know collagen and retinol often are too? The good news is, there are now heaps of vegan brands and products that are just as effective as their mainstream counterparts. These are the vegan-friendly buys you can rely on...

Introducing Janine Scott Get to know the Light Touch Clinic’s Senior Aesthetic Nurse.
To begin with, how did you become interested in aesthetics?
After spending many years at the cutting edge of surgery working alongside eight consultant plastic surgeons at St Thomas’ Hospital, it seemed a natural progression to enter the world of aesthetic medicine. In 12 years of working in aesthetics, I feel privileged to have been part of my patient’s journey as they strive to feel more confident about themselves. I never under estimate that any changes, big or small can have a huge impact on a person’s life.
What do you love most about your job?
I love meeting my patients for the first time, it is a very important part of the relationship where I really get to know what each patient wishes to improve. I always strive to combine treatments that deliver a look that enhances the patient’s natural beauty, no one should ever look over filled or ‘done’. I am well-known for a light but effective approach to my work. It really saddens me when I see a patient that has been over filled, lips being a particular bug bear. The ‘slug’ lip should be banned!
What do you love about the Light Touch Clinic? The clinic is brilliantly led by Dr Natalie Blakely. One of the philosophies of the clinic is that every patient should feel comfortable and relaxed, a cosmetic clinic can be quite daunting place for first time patients! Natalie has established a very warm and welcoming safe haven. As a 5 2 O C TO b E r 2 0 1 6
team we demand excellence, never compromising on our patients results as this is what defines us a clinic. The team works closely together to deliver a five star experience that should exceed our patient expectations. I couldn’t wish to work in a more welcoming and ethical clinic.
One of the philosophies of the clinic is that every patient should feel comfortable and relaxed, a cosmetic clinic can be quite daunting place for first time patients!
What do consider the highlights of your career so far?
Too many to mention! Building a patient base over many years is really important to me, I have treated many patients for over 11 years and I still see them now, their loyalty and trust in what I do is definitely a highlight. Being listed as one of the UK’s Best Cosmetic Nurses in Tatler is definitely another achievement as it not only recognized what I personally have accomplished, it also recognized nine other brilliant nurses who are part of a nationwide team of highly skilled practitioners delivering excellence to their patients.
Your top treatment tips What are your three Hero products you wouldn’t be without?
• Sunscreen – I cannot emphasise enough how important sunscreen is, we all know the damage UVA rays can cause. A high SPF along with sensible sun exposure will help to reduce those telltale signs as you age. I particularly like the Heliocare range as they have a more intelligent blend of ingredients to treat as well as protect. • Vitamin C Serum – Free radicals are a common part of everyday modern life, Vitamin C will go some way towards mopping these up as well as improving skintone. I love Obagi 15% Vitamin C. • Glycolic Exfoliation – we all should gently exfoliate our skin to get rid of dead skin cells otherwise our skin looks dull and lifeless. You wouldn’t put a beautiful dress on a dirty body, so don’t blame your make up, blame your skin care! I am a massive fan of Glycogent by ZO.
My top treatments tip is not to have a top treatment tip! Every person is so totally different and that’s what makes my job so interesting. The Light Touch Clinic has many different high end treatments and technologies that we can offer our patients. From injectable fillers to gently support the face, wrinkle relaxing injections to freshen lines and Ultrasound to lift and strengthen collagen, some or all of these approaches can be used to achieve a natural and rejuvenated appearance – no two people are the same!
When it comes to ageing, is there anything you wish you had known years ago?
When I was younger I worried how I would feel about ageing, would it happen overnight? How would it affect me? As I approach my 50th year, I have learnt that it’s really not as bad as I imagined. I feel positive about my ageing because I have a positive attitude towards it, I have had subtle treatments over the years that mean that I am in control of my ageing, not the other way round! I wish I hadn’t worried so much (and not used simple make up wipes as a teenager!)

ot only is this time of year famous for London Fashion Week, and high street autumn/winter arrivals, it’s also when major beauty brands and fashion houses unveil their biggest fragrance launches. The product of months - if not years - of famous ‘noses’ beavering away in their laboratories, mixing and modifying hundreds of ingredients until their creations are ready to be revealed, the hope is that one of these scents will make it onto your dressing table very soon. And what a selection there is, with more than a few worthy of signature scent status. These are the perfumes vying to hit the sweet spot this year...
THE MODERN REDUX
Offering a fresh take on the house’s eternally-adored perfume, Chanel No5 L’Eau, £68 for 50ml, Boots, opens with a blast of bracing citrus, making way for familiar wafts of jasmine and ylang-ylang, and a masculine finish courtesy of cedar and vetiver (www.boots.com).
THE HERBAL REMEDY
Basil is a key component in one of Jo Malone’s bestselling scents, but the new Basil & Neroli Cologne, £86 for 100ml, is like nothing else. A gorgeously green aroma inspired by London’s gardens, it blends two varieties of the distinctive herb with an orange note and white musk, bringing depth to the verdant bouquet (www.jomalone.co.uk).
THE EXOTIC ESCAPE
Conjuring the fragrant air of a hot, humid paradise, frangipani and ylang-ylang are front and centre in Prada La Femme Eau de Parfum, £69 for 50ml, Selfridges. Married with creamy beeswax and vanilla, tuberose and vetiver round off this seductive fusion (www.selfridges.com).
THE BOHEMIAN DREAM
Part of the Les Extraits Vert Private Blend Collection, Tom Ford Vert Boheme Eau de Parfum, £148 for 50ml, House of Fraser, is a Seventies-inspired scent that opens with evocative notes of Sicilian mandarin before drying down to a heady magnolia heart, underscored with Gustavia wood - a rarely used ingredient from the plant known as the ‘Tree of Heaven’ - and heavenly it sure is (www.houseoffraser.co.uk).
THE BIG SMOKE
Dreamt up after years of horse-riding trips in Montana, Jo Loves Smoked Plum & Leather, £65 for 50ml, mingles firewood facets with warm plum liquer and rich leather - one whiff and you can practically hear the creak of a
saddle and the whinny of an ebony stallion (www.joloves.com).
Michael Kors Midnight Shimmer Eau de Parfum, Boots, www.boots.com
THE BERRY BURST
A tangy trio of blackcurrant bud, red ginger and bergamot lead the charge of Liz Earle’s Botanical Essence No.9, £49 for 50ml, with rose, patchouli and vanilla fleshing out this dark, spicy composition (www.lizearle.com).
THE FRESH FLORAL
One of seven simultaneous new releases, Louis Vuitton Roses des Vents, £180 for 100ml, pays tribute to the Queen of Flowers, the beloved floral buffeted with pepper, iris and cedar in a delicately feminine amalgamation (www.louisvuitton.com).
THE EIGHTIES HOMAGE
Inspired by the decade of shoulder pads, perms and excessive eye make-up, Floris 1988 Eau de Parfum, £140 for 100ml, is a thankfully more tasteful affair. Sparkling citrus notes are joined by the savoury tang of rosemary and thyme, with musk and amber imparting an androgynous edge (www.florislondon.com).
THE SWEET TREAT
Undeniably rich and sophisticated, like a perfectly packaged box of Laduree macarons, Michael Kors Midnight Shimmer Eau de Parfum, £79 for 100ml, Boots, falls firmly in the gourmand category. Emanating vanilla and amberwood, this warm, enveloping aroma will satisfy any sweet tooth (www.boots.com).
THE POWDER PLAYER
Powdery and proud of it, Amouage Lilac Love Eau de Parfum, £260 for 100ml, Harrods, frames the classic floral in swathes of jasmine and rose, with tonka bean and sandalwood providing a smoothly sweet finish (www. harrods.com).
GET THE LOOK
Make-up artist Mario Dedivanovic says, for her MTV Video Music Awards appearance, he wanted to make Kim Kardashian look “like a Greek Goddess, with a dewy complexion and a natural glow”. The maestro achieved just that, with a trio of Laura Mercier products: Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation in Maple, £35, followed by Face Illuminator Powder in Addiction, £32, and finished with a slick of Velour Lovers Lip Colour in Sensual, £22, all available at John Lewis (www.johnlewis.com).

Stepping under a cascading shower can be one of the most luxurious feelings in the world. By Sam Wylie-Harris, Press Association
B
ut turning the shower on to be greeted with a pathetic little trickle can be one of the most frustrating and disappointing experiences! Indeed, the power of a good shower should not be underestimated. So much more than a means of getting clean, the right one can encourage us to break into a chorus of Singin’ In The Rain, awaken the senses and leave us invigorated and ready to face the demands of the day. Nearly 90% of UK households, according to AMA Research (www.amaresearch.co.uk), have at least one shower in their home, and with demand for super-stylish systems continuing to grow, leading bathroom specialists now offer an array of solutions for both traditional and contemporary interiors. “The bathroom continues to be a key element of our homes, playing a much greater role beyond that of its traditional function as just another part of the daily routine,” says Robin Levien, international designer at Ideal Standard. “It has become both multi-purpose and multi-functional, an oasis of escapism and relaxation. A place for reinvigoration, transformation and even somewhere to pose, ponder and play.” Dreaming of a shower upgrade? The first stage in the planning process is to address a number of key issues, such as water pressure, the fabric of the building and ceiling height. “ The most important thing is to ensure you choose a shower system that’s compatible with your water supply, to make sure you have sufficient water pressure to give optimal showering experience,” notes Joe Stephens, product designer at Roper Rhodes. Once the practical points have been addressed, you can drench yourself in the fun bits...
DARK DEPTHS
Style and ambience can make a big difference in a bathroom; an uncluttered spa style, and chic, minimal designs are ever-popular. And while lighter colour schemes may be most traditionally associated with this part of the home, don’t rule out moody hues, which can work especially well. “There is a trend for using dark colours on the walls and floor, which with good lighting, can actually make a small space seem bigger, as well as delivering a boutique hotel feel,” says Levien. Think different shades of greys, particularly darker tones, which are very on trend and great for creating a tranquil feel of luxury and relaxation. Bristan’s latest electric shower range has been designed to complement any decor scheme, and their Bliss model comes in a cool black gloss, to combine uber contemporary design with the usual functional benefits. Clever new detailing includes an anti-limescale feature and warm-up mode. • Bristan Bliss Electric Shower 10.5KW - Black BL105B, £149.95 (www.victorianplumbing.co.uk) • Idealrain Shower, from £265, with Tonic alcove door and Simplicity Low Profile shower tray, ITV exposed thermostatic valve with Idealrain S1 shower kit and Idealrain fixed riser with M1 rain shower, Ideal Standard (for stockists, visit www.ideal-standard.co.uk) • Concept Freedom Dual Shower, from £636, with M1 rainshower, fixed riser, M3 handspray and pin handles (for stockists, visit www.ideal-standard.co.uk)

Oversized shower heads can - literally - wash our woes away and make us feel like we’re in Club Tropicana. “Drench shower heads are a fantastic choice for those looking to create a spa-like showering experience,” says Helen Shaw, marketing manager at Laura Ashley Bathroom Collection. “Large, 300mm shower heads, which can be ceiling-mounted for a dramatic effect, are perfect for this as they create a cascading rain shower effect. Diverter valves are very popular, as they give the ability to switch the flow of water between two or even three different outlets, such as the main overhead shower, a handset and a bath filler. Thermostatic shower valves are another popular choice, particularly for families, as they are safe and easy to use.” Lisa Ward, shower design expert at Bristan, agrees: “ Right now, bigger is better. Show-stopping ceiling-fed shower heads are a huge trend, because they look great, and they provide a really luxurious showering experience. “This year we’re seeing the emergence of ‘wow’ shower head features, such as waterfall settings and LED mood lighting, which create a sense of total relaxation,” she adds. “There’s a perception that ceiling-fed shower heads are inflexible, but increasingly, homeowners are investing in a diverter to a second shower head, which can be adjusted to suit the needs of each user, meaning they get the best of both worlds.” • Bristan Glorious Showerpack, currently £305.40 from £509, including Thermostatic Valve, 200mm Fixed Head Shower Rose with Wall Arm and Adjustable Shower Kit (www.tapstore.com) • Clifton Exposed Dual Function Shower, £600, with thermostatic system, height adjustable rigid riser rail and separate flow control to a 200mm shower head or a single function shower handset (www.lauraashleybathroomcollection.com) • Factor Concealed Dual Function Shower System, £640 (www.roperrhodes.co.uk) • Henley Dual Function Exposed Shower System, £570 (www.roperrhodes.co.uk)
THE WOW FACTOR
When space is at a minimum, often it’s all about finding inventive and user-friendly ways of fitting in the essentials - but those lucky enough to have lots of bathroom space to play with can tap into trends on a larger scale. “Bathrooms are moving from the functional into the decadent,” says Edel Nicholson, marketing manager at Merlyn Showering. “There are no longer any taboos and the filter has been lifted! Colour, texture, shape and size have moved from being ‘safe’ to almost stretching the boundaries of good taste. There has never been so much choice and product variation, and trends are very fast moving.” To create a beautiful bathroom, the pros at Merlyn suggest picking a statement piece that you really can’t live without - make that the focus of the room and design your bathroom around it. Talk to your local bathroom retailer, as they can give you professional advice and use a suite of design tools, so you can be confident you’ve made the right choices for your space and needs, before any costly tiling or plumbing work begins. “We love giving a traditional bathroom an up-to-date facelift by removing the bath and replacing it with a large format slim tray and wet room,” says Nicholson. “This totally
“To create a beautiful bathroom, the pros at Merlyn suggest picking a statement piece that you really can’t live without” transforms both the look, life and function of the bathroom. “Again, there is huge choice out there, and if you are concerned about plumbing and drainage, opt for a low level tray for a true wet room look. “Think about coloured glass, as this can offer a ‘wow’ factor and also delivers some privacy, if the bathroom is used by more than one person at a time.” • Synergy Corner Wet Room Panel with straight bracing bracket, end panel and angle bracing bracket, Moments Shower Column, from £350 (for stockists, visit www.ideal-standard.co.uk) • 8 Series Colour Sliding Door in Gold, from £1,495.20, with 8mm toughened safety glass, concealed fittings, translucent seals and frame colour options (for stockists, visit www.merlynshowering.com) • Aquaglass + Sphere Tinted Slider, from £890, featuring concealed fittings, 8mm-toughened glass, and a sleek black handle (for stockists, visit www.frontlinebathrooms.co.uk) 6 O C T O ber 2 0 1 6

he third-generation family firm has been dealing with materials, forms and design for more than 80 years. This combination of tradition and craftsmanship is the basis for a their, timeless kitchen architecture, which combines elegant materials with a selfcontained design language and intelligent functionality. Kitchens with a strong character and lasting perfection are created with responsibility and passion at the company’s headquarters in St. Martin, Upper Austria, where Steininger was founded
ROCK
A joint design by Martin Steininger and Alberto Minotti, is a kitchen archipelago consisting of four different blocks, which can be made from a range of the finest stone materials. ROCK can be implemented either as a bold, monolithic island solution, or as an unusual standalone concept comprising four cubes - based on Donald Judd’s art installation “Minimal Myth” - with a few centimetres spacing to each other. Every kitchen is unique - even the inside is individually designed for each custome.. Drawers made of stainless steel and a magnetic, double hand-stitched, felt base are divided up using magnetic dividers and equipped with a wide variety of functional modules. All parts are made from 6 mm thin natural stone with a 45° edge. Featuring a special, patented handle, the kitchen blocks appear to be one single piece.
Pure
PURE
The monolithic kitchen island PURE impresses with clear and precise style. The integrated solid wood table and stainless steel revolving herbs bed are not only functional elements, but also allow PURE’s surface materials to come alive – particularly in combination with concrete. The 8 mm thin concrete is heat-resistant and food-safe. We developed a procedure that allowed us to make the conrete so thin that it was light enough but not brittle, and maintain its interesting surface texture with fine cracks and bubbles“, says Steininger. What the unusual outer skin of the kitchen promises, is also delivered in the top-quality interior, made of stainless steel and the finest wood. As with all STEININGER kitchens, reduction down to the essentials and visual order are part of the concept.
Slim
SLIM
The elegant kitchen island SLIM fully follows the trend of using extraordinary materials in the kitchen. The unit block and cupboard element are fully clad in anodised aluminium. Austrian workmanship comes into effect in the carefully crafted wine racks and the unusual sliding mechanism of SLIM. Steininger exercised its usual quality in getting down to work on the new SLIM. The aluminium parts are processed with engineering precision. The gap dimensions of the fronts match, in their precision, those found in vehicle manufacturing. To replace and adjust the aluminium parts, Steininger used a patented procedure for the first time to enable an even more precise execution. Thanks to the new processing method, the feel of the aluminium parts is especially pleasant, smooth and silky. “The aim was to produce an even more robust and long-lasting surface. The outer skin of the new SLIM consists of 3 mm thick, massive aluminium. With the newly developed folding technology,we can use it on flat surfaces and fold around corners“, says Steininger. he best kitchens don’t just look beautiful, but they behave beautifully too. That’s what international interiors company Neptune believe, and it’s a belief that’s felt in every inch of its exquisitely crafted kitchens. Timeless in style, thoughtful in design, uncompromising in quality, these are kitchens to last a lifetime. Founded in 1996, Neptune is an award-winning British interiors and lifestyle brand with stores across the UK and Europe, including our very own in the heart of Weybridge. For those who are yet to discover Neptune, theirs is a world of beautifully hand-crafted furniture, textiles and accessories for the home and garden. Design wise, they’re perhaps most known for kitchens with their heirloom-
worthy dressers not far behind. Their trademark ‘look’ is British. Refined, simple, sturdy, and with an almost obsessive attention to detail. And they’re certainly most respected for their commitment to craft and quality. Never will you find chipboard in a Neptune piece, nor will you see MDF, ever. Put simply, they make things they’re proud of, and want you to be too. Neptune’s kitchen collection consists of four signature designs: Chichester, Suffolk, Henley and Limehouse, and each comes with a lifetime guarantee. Chichester is a classic English design with cockbead moulding and has a simple perfection to it. The pared-back Suffolk takes its cue from the Shaker movement and shows a real discipline to design. The almost regal Henley kitchen is crafted entirely from solid oak and includes some rather impressive curved cabinetry. The Limehouse is the sleek one. The most obviously contemporary, it’s full of hidden secrets like a pullout spice rack and white stone prisms that act as drawer dividers. The one thing they all have in common is a wonderful amount of choice. From paint colours and types of cabinetry to work surfaces and even hardware, together with your dedicated kitchen designer you can create the kitchen you’ve always wanted.

THE HEART OF
THE HOME
On average, people spend from £8,000 to a massive £20,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space…so depending on the price range, what can that buy you? Contemporary kitchens
The sleek look that comes hand in hand with a contemporary kitchen will provide instant gratification. The practical use of space allows for more movement in the kitchen and provides easier access to storage areas and necessary equipment as you prepare those mouth-watering dishes. Also, contemporary colours provide a more open feeling which adds into the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs.
French country kitchen
This look combines rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. Opt for units in an aged shade of parchment or dove grey featuring beautifully-turned, bevelled detailing. Team with natural stone or slate on the floor, black or cream enamel Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. This also works well with freestanding features, so choose an antique-style armoire for displaying tableware and an island unit with matching hood as a focal point. Hang copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger and accessorise the room with rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware.
Shaker Style kitchen
The clean lines and rustic feel of a shaker kitchen means they appeal to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillow-fronted 1 2 O C T O ber 2 0 1 6
doors and beautiful woods are features that epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island in the middle can make an attractive and very useful addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in.
Retro Kitchen
A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points.
LAYOUT
Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. There are people who want to frame pictures, wash dogs, even do keep fit in their kitchens. If you’re remodelling from scratch and have a large space, think open plan and multi-purpose – somewhere to eat, work, cook and relax. Kitchen experts John Lewis of Hungerford advise thinking hard about your lifestyle. “The vivacious party animal” needs a U-shaped kitchen with island in the middle and open ended for social gathering, for example. “The Good Life fans” prefers a big L-shaped layout with a range-style cooker, large fridge and freezer and large farmhouse table. “The London weekday bolthole” needs galley-style layout with plenty of wall storage cabinets because most of the below surface cupboards are filled with appliances and gadgets. Meanwhile the “pony club set” loves a free-standing pantry offset to a wrap-around kitchen with peninsula and, of course, an Aga.

5 Top tips for: kitchens INITIAL DESIGN
By Julia Gray, Press Association
You can, of course, design your new kitchen yourself, but expert advice is hard to beat. A good kitchen designer will probably think of things you haven’t, and should know their products inside out. B&Q, for example, will design your kitchen free of charge and give you access to its Spaces 3D planning tool so you can have a go yourself. Working out what you do and don’t like about your current kitchen, and what you do and don’t want from your new one, is a good place to start.
USING THE SPACE
If you’re having an extension built to accommodate the kitchen, deciding how to divide up the space into cooking, dining and living areas should be done before designing the kitchen itself. It’s a good idea to wait until the shell of the extension is up because seeing it may change how you want to use the space.
DELIVERY
Waiting for the kitchen to be delivered can take longer than you think. Some ranges are available off the shelf, such as B&Q’s IT range - many items can be bought in store, but some are only available from the B&Q website, www.diy.com. Some kitchens take weeks, or even months, to arrive, which can seem like an eternity if you’re managing without one. And don’t forget to find a good kitchen fitter in advance and let them know when the kitchen is due to arrive to avoid unnecessary delays. Recent research from B&Q, which coincided with its Homefit installation service (www. diy.com/diy/homefit) being endorsed by the Which? Trusted Traders scheme, revealed that we spend more time choosing the colour of our kitchen than finding the right person to fit it.
DURING INSTALLATION
Cooking meals is the biggest challenge if you have to cope without a kitchen for long, especially if you have a family to feed. However, there are plenty of small appliances that make life easier - Russell Hobbs has a good selection, including a Mini Hob (£34.99, www.uk.russellhobbs.com) and MultiCooker (£89.99, www.uk.russellhobbs.com). George Foreman Fat Reducing Grills are great for cooking all sorts of things, but the new George Foreman Evolve Grill (currently reduced to £99.99 from £149.99, www.georgeforeman. co.uk) is like having a hob, oven and grill in one compact gadget. Another surprisingly versatile gadget is the De’Longhi Multifry (from RRP £159.99), which can be used to cook meals such as risottos and stews, as well as crisp chips.
WOOD CARE
If you’ve opted for wooden worktops, leave enough time to oil them thoroughly before installation to protect them from marks and warping. The worktops must be stored and oiled flat, so they do take up a lot of room. Once they’re fitted, remember to oil any cutouts, especially the one for the
1 4 O C T O ber 2 0 1 6
sink, and keep oiling the worktops in situ - once a day for a week, once a week for a month and once a month for a year, a builder told me recently. The worktops need to be oiled on all sides, but especially the top, and it’s essential to use a good wood oil, such as low-odour Sadolin Worktop Oil (£15.99 for 500ml, Homebase). This isn’t the cheapest oil, but it’s definitely worth paying a bit more to give your worktops proper protection - inexpensive oils often aren’t up to the job. The Sadolin oil takes a while to soak in - leave for 24 hours before re-coating - but it repels water well and gives a lovely natural look.

top tips for tiling By Julia Gray, Press Association
TIP 1 Tiles come in various shapes, sizes and materials,
and it’s important to get ones that suit the style and function of the room you’re tiling, as well as your budget. Often an affordable option, ceramic and porcelain tiles are popular because they’re easy to lay and care for. Glass tiles are also low maintenance and look fantastic, but they tend to be expensive. As are many stone tiles (slate, marble and limestone etc) which are often higher maintenance and can vary a lot in thickness, colour and texture, so they’re not for everyone. TIP 2 Mosaic tiles are available in lots of different materials and are ideal for a feature wall or splashback, 1 8 O C T O ber 2 0 1 6
but they’re rarely cheap. They can be hard to keep looking good, depending on where they are and the colour of the grout, because there are so many grout lines compared to larger tiles. Mosaics aren’t the most practical option as a cooker or hob splashback, for example, especially if the grout’s pale. TIP 3 If you’re buying tiles online that you haven’t seen in person, make sure you get a sample first because you could end up with tiles you don’t like that are expensive to return. Of course, you may prefer to buy tiles in store, where you can see what you’re getting. Another advantage
HOWTO TIP
If you’re doing the tiling yourself, it’s a good idea to buy tile adhesive the same colour as the grout you can get all-in-one ready mixed products. This is because the adhesive can ooze through the gaps between the tiles as you lay them and if the grout’s the same colour, you don’t need to be as meticulous about removing all the excess adhesive before grouting
Product of the month To give kitchens and bathrooms period-style elegance, Quater Bisel wall tiles in Cendre (£64.08 per m2, www. tilegiant.co.uk) are a good choice. These pale beige-grey tiles have bevelled edges and a gloss crackle-glaze finish - because of the crackle glaze, they should be sealed with tile sealer to prevent staining, but the effort will be worth it.
of buying in store is that you can ensure all the tiles come from the same batch (as long as there’s a batch number on the boxes), so they’re exactly the same colour and finish. TIP 4 To work out the number of tiles required, multiply the length by the height of each wall or part wall to be tiled (minus the area of any doors, windows, etc.) and add them together to get the total area, plus around 10% more for breakages and wastage. Lots of tiles are sold per square metre and even if they’re not, it should say what the price is per square metre - this is the easiest way to work out the cost.
TIP 5 Don’t forget to factor in the cost of the tile
adhesive and grout, tools, spacers and other accessories. The adhesive and grout must be suitable for where you’re tiling (not all can be used in showers, for example) and the sort of tiles you’re using. The grout can make almost as much of a style statement as the tiles themselves, as the colour of the grout can make a big difference to the finished look, so don’t decide on the grout as an afterthought. You can get an idea of how grout changes the appearance of tiles at www.tilegiant.co.uk, which also has a visualiser, where you can see how different tiles look in a room set. O C T O ber 2 0 1 6 1 9

top tips for bathroom electrics
TIP 1 The key to good bathroom lighting is flexibility,
because the bright light required for shaving or applying make-up is not the soft, relaxing light you need to enjoy a soak in the tub. As long as they’re suitable for the zone they’re in (see below), recessed spotlights on a dimmer switch are a good solution because you can adjust the brightness to the task in hand. Wall lights can also be bright, task lighting, especially around the basin, or soft lighting when you don’t want the ceiling light on. TIP 2 Bathroom zones are worked out according to their proximity to the taps and shower, with zone 0 being inside the bath and shower. The lower the zone number, the more protected the light must be. This is sometimes expressed as an IP (ingress protection) rating, but it’s simpler to go by the zone - it should say on the box which zone or zones a bathroom light is suitable for. Some even have a diagram of the zones on the box, although you can easily find this online. Lights designed for inner bathroom zones have encased bulbs for safety, but it can be a good idea to have this type of light fitting in outside zones because steam can corrode ‘open’ fittings over time. However, the latter tend to give off a lot more light than ‘closed’ fittings. TIP 3 If you don’t have an extractor fan in your bathroom, get an electrician to fit one. Extractors reduce the damage caused by steam and moisture, and help to prevent mould and mildew. In bathrooms without a 2 0 O C T O ber 2 0 1 6
By Julia Gray, Press Association
window, which is common in flats, an extractor is even more important and should be switched on every time you shower or bath. Extractors are usually wired to come on with the ceiling light, although they can be switched off independently. TIP 4 A centrally heated towel rail (or radiator) and/ or underfloor heating (either electric or ‘wet’) are popular choices for keeping bathrooms warm. When it’s turned on, underfloor heating makes stepping out of the shower or bath on a cold day a pleasure, but fitting it will involve some disruption, so it can be better to wait until you’re redoing the bathroom. If you like toasty towels all year round, an electric towel rail or a central heating towel rail that can be fitted with an electric element may be ideal, as it will dry your towels without the central heating having to be on. TIP 5 Electrical work in the bathroom should rarely be attempted by DIYers - you may be breaking building regulations, as a bathroom is regarded as a ‘special location’ for electrical installations. Play safe and use a qualified and reputable electrician, who will be able to make sure the work’s safe and legal. Although you can employ a building control inspector from the local council or a private firm, the easiest option is to use an electrician who belongs to a ‘competent person scheme’, such as NICEIC (www.niceic. com). They can self-certify that their work complies with building regs and should provide the completion certificate you need.

Self-Cleaning Conservatory Roof Glass
Fact or Fiction? S
elf-cleaning glass was once described as “an impossible dream”, but thanks to an intensive research and development programme many years ago by the world’s leading glass manufacturer, Pilkington, self-cleaning glass is neither fiction or an old wives tale, and it can even over time (with a little precipitation to assist) make bird droppings disappear! Pilkington Activ, was the world’s first self-cleaning glass and has a unique dual action that harnesses the forces of nature to keep the glass free from organic dirt, providing a
8 4 O C T O ber 2 0 1 6
surface that requires less cleaning, whilst also at the same time delivering clearer, better-looking windows. The secret of Pilkington Activ is a special coating that reacts with ultra-violet (UV) rays from natural daylight (which works even on overcast days and during the night) to break down and disintegrate organic dirt. Organic dirt generally comes from livings plants and creatures (i.e. tree sap or fingerprints or bird droppings, whilst inorganic dirt comes from non-living sources (i.e. cement or plaster dust etc.). The special coating needs 5-7
days exposure to daylight to activate fully. Self-cleaning glass really is no fable, as its special coating breaks down organic dirt, whilst reducing the adherence of inorganic dirt. When rain water runs down self-cleaning glass it washes the loosened dirt away (both organic and inorganic), as the special photo catalytic process used on the coating causes water droplets to spread out to form a “sheet”, enabling dirt particles on the surface to be easily picked up by water and washed off the glass. Inorganic dirt will only be removed by water. Compared with conventional glass, thanks to its hydrophilic form, water on self-cleaning glass dries very quickly, reducing unsightly streaks or marks. The special coating on Pilkington Activ self-cleaning glass can break down even heavy deposits of organic dirt, but does need UV light reaching the glass to enable the breaking down process to work. So during long dry dusty spells, or if windows get heavily soiled, it is advisable to clean the glass using a hosepipe to replicate rainfall or a soft cloth and warm soapy water to enable the process to start all over again. Please note that a period of reactivation may be required, which again is typically 5-7 days. The beauty of Pilkington Activ’s special coating is that it lasts the lifetime of the glazing itself, as it will not be worn away or rubbed off under normal conditions. The coating is integral to the glass, it will not flake or discolour, and can only be affected if the surface itself is damaged, for example, by abrasive cleaners or steel wool. The coating is environmentally friendly, containing harmless chemical substances already found in the home (i.e. in bath oils and toothpaste). In fact as only small amounts of cleaning agents are ever needed, selfcleaning glass is kinder to the environment than normal glass, which needs regular cleaning. Self-cleaning glass can be installed on almost any exterior application, such as windows, conservatories and glass roofs. It can be installed vertically or at an angle of at least 10 degrees, although most efficient at an angle of 30 degrees or more. Self-cleaning glass is ideal for inaccessible windows where organic dirt normally collects like skylights. Specialists and Pilkington glass installers Hazlemere Windows, Doors & Conservatories, advise that self-cleaning glass will prove ineffective if installed under
an overhang or in a position where daylight and/or rain cannot reach it, as it has been designed for exterior use only. It should also be noted that slightly darker tints perform slightly better than clear glass in terms of heat reflection. Self-cleaning glass is an excellent long term investment, as over a period it will save time and money, plus from the cleaning standpoint it is far safer than ordinary glass windows, particularly for conservatories. Pilkington self-cleaning glass can be combined with other glass products in insulating glass units to provide benefits such as thermal insulation, noise reduction, solar control and fire protection. Living in Luxury
C
ommissioned by their client to create a glamourous, inviting and luxurious home on the prestigious private estate of St Georges Hill in Weybridge, the design team at Concept Interiors, led by Design Director Samantha Morgan, began working on the schemes whilst the build was still in its initial stages. This was to ensure that the design for the entire property flowed seamlessly throughout each of the spaces, whilst still giving each room its own identity. Using a combination of sumptuous textures and sophisticated finishes they have created a finished property that is luxurious and impacting, yet manages to remain warm and inviting despite its large scale. The Kitchen Family Room mixes gentle grey tones with tactile and elegant fabrics, working beautifully with the sleek kitchen cabinets and statement stone island. Cleverly concealed behind a kitchen door is the leisure complex, featuring an envy inducing bespoke bar and wine room with back lit glass & stone, an entertaining space, gym, spa & pool. Each space has been designed to have its own wow factor, from the Master Bedroom, which takes its design inspiration from the iconic Chanel quilting, to the ground floor cloakroom with its two meter high cascading crystal wall lights. The Drawing Room has an icy elegance, featuring panelled mirror walls, bespoke high gloss furniture and venetian glass lights. Concept Interiors have effortlessly

balanced the cool tones and mirrored surfaces with soft velvets and stunning silks, resulting in a truly breath-taking room that oozes glamour and sophistication. The study is unashamedly dark and masculine, using hints of gold to contrast against the black finishes and the book matched marble flooring. The design team chose to use antique mirror and polished gold detailing in the bespoke joinery to add more drama and finished off the space by tastefully accessorising in a combination of black and gold. In stark contrast to this, Her Master En-suite is overtly feminine. The bath tub is upholstered in white ostrich leather with Swarovski crystal buttoning and finished with a Rose Ogee pink marble top. The large walk in shower has a crystal chandelier shower head and the bathroom fixtures have crystal details. The glamour is continued in the stunning curved, gloss white vanity unit with leather panels and stone worktop and the vanity mirror is equally striking, with its leather and chrome detailing and crystal wall lights, all enhanced with a gorgeous pink marble wall frame.

Bruton Park
A
s we drive through the gates of Bruton park and down the sweeping driveway, we are greeted with a beautiful Limestone façade. Bruton Park oozing a sense of quality and style. “Limestone houses are all the rage here in Wentworth” says Rupert Wyatt, Partner of Boutique Estate Agency firm Barton Wyatt, specialists of prestigious homes within the Wentworth Estate “the first one went up about five or six years and they are proving to be very popular” says Wyatt. “It’s the ultimate statement of style and quality. It also costs a hell of a lot, this building was just over £1M for the Limestone alone” The front door is enormously heavy about 3” thick “another subtle touch of quality that people may not directly pick up on but it’s all about the senses and experience of living in a house like this” continues Wyatt. The ground floor has an impressive entrance hall with sweeping staircases and vaulted ceilings, the principle reception rooms are enormous with high ceilings and a grand sense of occasion and importance. Across the rear of the house, the drawing room and kitchen enjoys magnificent over the park like grounds, with lawns sweeping down to the River Bourne. “Being so elevated, you get the sun very late into the evening on the terrace here as it faces south west to the rear. I have been here during the summer months and the sun sets on the terrace here as late as 8pm or 8.30pm” says Wyatt. 9 4 O C T O ber 2 0 1 6
Upstairs are five sumptuous bedroom suites with lavish and exotic marbles in the bathrooms. There are his and hers dressing rooms and bathrooms to the stunning master bedroom suite with a balcony overlooking the gardens. Down to the lower ground floor where there is an enormous reception area. Wyatt explains “it’s designed as a party reception area as the formal dining room and catering kitchens are here as well as the staff accommodation, cinema room, two stunning guest bedroom suites and an enormous leisure complex. I notice the McLaren has gone from the car turn table overlooking the swimming pool. “I borrowed that from a friend for the photoshoot” says Wyatt. In fact, Ron Dennis (the owner of McLaren cars) lives at the bottom of the garden here!” As we finish our tour of the house, we head outside onto the colossal terrace, “perfect for a wedding don’t you think” says Wyatt grinning from ear to ear and raising his eyebrows as though I might actually buy the house. We wander down the gardens to the River Bourne and peer into Ron Dennis’ garden. What an idyllic setting I think, a perfectly formed mansion as we look back at Bruton Park. What do people look for when buying a house on the Wentworth Estate? I ask. “Something special, unique and above all quality” says Wyatt. “People don’t want what all their friends have got, they want something different. They are also looking for privacy, seclusion and tranquillity and this one pretty much ticks all the boxes” I tell Rupert I’m very impressed, and head off to buy my lottery ticket.

A+ for Surrey property
E
ducation has long been one of the most influential factors for buyers looking to purchase a new home. Whether buying for investment purposes or as an owneroccupier, proximity to good schools and universities is often at the top of a potential buyer’s list. Research from Lloyds Bank shows that many parents are willing to pay an average of £53,000 extra to secure homes close to schools with the best academic outcomes. The figure marks a 31% increase on last year. This has led to areas such as Surrey and the Home Counties to grow in terms of buyer interest and residential prices in recent years. Denise Stewart, Sales and Marketing Director for Antler Homes comments, “Good educational institutions continue to be a key driver for price growth. Surrey has an abundance of highly performing schools with the
9 6 O C T O ber 2 0 1 6
University of Surrey ranking in the top 20 in the UK. “Smart buyers have been pursuing Surrey as an option for a considerable length of time, and with ever-improving transport links to the city and an exceptional quality of life for residents, it is unsurprising that property prices have seen a surge.” Indeed, house prices in Surrey increased by 12.2% between July 2015 and July 2016, while the UK’s national increase was only 9.1% during the same period. (ONS UK House Price Index) With this in mind, Chamberlain Place development by Antler Homes is the perfect area to invest in a property. Located in the picturesque Elmbridge district of Surrey, Weybridge has long been one of the southern counties’ most desirable locations. The area offers schools such as three “outstanding” and “exceptional” primaries, according to Ofsted, in St Charles Borromeo Catholic, Ashley CofE and Cleves. Highly regarded independent schools such as St George’s College and Reed’s dominate the secondary sector, but the state Thamesmead and Heathside are “good”. The abundance of educational institutions coupled with a vibrant town centre, wide selection of leisure activities and good transport connections, make Chamberlain Place an ideal location for modern family living. Each home boasts a spacious Kitchen/
Breakfast/Family area with sliding doors opening into the garden. A luxurious first floor formal living room is complemented by rear facing balcony and the Master bedroom suite has the dressing room of dreams plus en-suite bath and shower room. There are also three further double bedrooms, a large integral garage and a beautiful landscaped garden. Living at Chamberlain Place in Weybridge you really can enjoy the best of two distinctly different worlds. You have easy access to the beautiful Surrey countryside, exemplified by Painshill Park, Surrey Hills, as well as Bushy Park, Virginia Water Lake and Oxshott Heath. This peaceful theme continues through nearby Wisley Royal Horticultural Society Gardens, Claremont Landscape Garden and Hampton Court Palace. If you prefer the bright lights and your shopping and entertainment facilities on a grander scale, local towns like Walton-on-Thames and Kingston upon Thames provide them. In addition, London Waterloo and all the attractions of one of the world’s great capital cities are just 30 minutes from Weybridge railway station. The Chaplins guide to Lighting Trends for Autumn Winter 2016 Custom Colours
L
ighting is a key architectural and design element in our home and as the nights start to draw in it is the perfect time to refresh lighting fixtures and take your interior style to the next level. Lighting is often referred to as the “jewellery of the home” as stylish lighting accessories can often be used to finish off the look of your interior. And although home design trends don’t go in and out as quickly as fashion, there are still some stand-out lighting styles that have gained recent popularity in today’s most designer-focused homes. Here’s our list of the top lighting trends of 2016 to illuminate your new year.
Industrial Luxe
The industrial interior look is one that has been around for several seasons now, but for AW 2016 we have seen a twist on this trend that introduces a little glamour. The industrial interior look is all about exposed raw materials and a pared back style but it is time to start adding shiny decorative elements to help offset the rougher textures seen around the scheme. Lighting is a great place to start when looking to incorporate these touches into your interior with many designers adding a wide range of glossy metal finishes to their collection. A personal favourite of ours are the hand-spun Stanley pendant lights by British lighting manufacturer Original BTC. Group them together for a dramatic effect or mix metals for a laid-back, eclectic look.
It’s time to get creative! In 2015 we saw a steep rise in the way technology is being used in the home sector with many retailers offering virtual interior design services through their websites and apps. This trend looks set to continue as lighting brands start to introduce customisation tools giving the customer the ability to pick finishes, sizes and configurations to suit their individual space. A good example of this is the Bocci 28 pendant, which comes in 68 different colours and be configured in random vertical compositions or cluster shapes
Geometric Lighting
One of the hottest lighting trends right now is geometric lighting fixtures. With clean lines and simple yet striking designs, geometric structures should standout on their own and provide a focal point to the room. Although geometric lighting fixtures invoke a minimalist aesthetic, they’re not just for modern and contemporary interiors. The key to their versatility is in the simplicity of the design. The geometric trend is a great option if you’re looking to give your space a modern or midcentury vibe.
Oversized Fixtures
Lighting fixtures that make a bold statement and serve as the focal point of a room are trending. If you are looking to make an instant impact, why not try a larger-than-life design to add some style and humour to your interior. You don’t have to have a large home to take part in this trend – a statement pendant in a kitchen or huge floor lamp above a dining room table can make for a beautiful style accent. Homes with tall ceilings or a large hallways and landings can also benefit from the increased sizes of today’s most popular lights.
Warm Metals
Nature Inspired
One of the next trends for the home will be lighting inspired from elements of nature: in organic forms, in the spectrum of natural colours and with particular reference to the world of leaf and plant silhouettes. Lighting inspired by nature softens the feel of cold, contemporary spaces by adding softer lines and an organic feel to the room. We particularly like the decorative LED chandelier from Moooi inspired by the Heracleum Plant. 9 8 O C T O ber 2 0 1 6
Warmer metals are in, and this trend is expected to continue through to 2017. Right now, metals in any form are big – but they appear with more subtlety than before. At the moment, there is a real leaning towards warmer tones. From kitchen appliances to hardware to lighting fixtures – bronze, brass and gold tones are making their mark. Not only are finishes “heating up”, but the freedom to mix metals is gaining in popularity. www.chaplins.co.uk
