THE MEXICAN PAVILION,YOU KNOW YOU CANNOT SEE YOURSELF SO WELL AS BY REFLECTION BY FRIDA ESCOBEDO

stablished in 2003, the London Design Festival has attained a reputation as one of the largest and most innovative design events in the world. This year the Festival will again celebrate and promote London as the design capital of the world, creating a platform for inspirational design initiatives. Over 350 events and installations will take place, from a stimulating programme at the V&A Museum to a series of installations and exhibitions in Somerset House. The Festival will showcase ideas from more than 250 partners, representing the heart of London’s design community. A major part of the London Design Festival’s programme is the presentation of Landmark Projects in various locations in London. These site-specific installations will demonstrate the imaginative capacity of designers, presenting the potential breadth of design ideas to a diverse audience. This year, in collaboration with Knight Dragon, the Hong Kong based property developer, the Festival has commissioned a major project in the Greenwich Peninsula. Conceptual artist Alex Chinneck is renowned for elevating everyday structures into the extraordinary - uniting the disciplines of art, design, architecture and engineering. ‘A Bullet from a Shooting Star’ takes the form of a regular electricity pylon referencing the industrial history of the site which once included the largest oil and gas works in Europe and a steelworks. The 35-metre high structure can be viewed from North Greenwich Station, the Emirates Airline cable car, the Thames Clipper service, Canary Wharf and all planes that fly to and from City Airport. The Festival will continue its unique collaboration with the world’s leading Museum of art and design. As the central hub location, the V&A will house a broad range of commissioned activity, and will include installations, events, talks and workshops. The V&A and London Design Festival, with support from the government of Mexico, have selected Mexican architect, Frida Escobedo, to create an installation in the V&A’s John Madejski Garden to mark the Year of Mexico in the UK. Titled ‘You Know You Cannot See Yourself So Well As By Reflection’ Escobedo will create a pavilion, inspired by Tenochtitlán, the Aztec city that was built on a lake. Referencing the multicultural influences that coexist in contemporary Mexico, the pavilion will be a flexible space made up of layers of reflective surfaces that can be moved and adapted to hold a wide variety of events and activities. Designers Laetitia de Allegri and Matteo Fogale are joining forces with Johnson Tiles to create a colourful installation on the bridge over the Medieval and Renaissance galleries. Inspired by the Renaissance which saw the birth of perspective in art, the designers have created a landscape of shapes which will emphasise the visitor’s viewpoint at the entrance to the bridge. The overlapping of semi-transparent colours will create a void and feeling of depth while the arrangement of the tiles on the floor will represent the grid and perspective lines on a drawing. An exciting new location for a Festival Landmark Project will be the historic Somerset House, which will house a number of projects this year. As a major centre for arts and culture, this will become a prominent new destination for Festival visitors. In the famous courtyard, internationally renowned architect David Adjaye is collaborating with MINI to create an installation that will reflect the vision and imagination that has made Adjaye globally recognised. Somerset House will also host the work of ten internationally renowned designers in the elegant West Wing Galleries. The London Design Festival achieves its role to celebrate and promote London as the world’s design capital and gateway to the International design community.

THE IVY

reopens after multi-million facelift London’s glamorous A-list restaurant The Ivy reopened on 1st June after a multi-million-pound makeover to see off competition from upstart celebrity venues such as the Chiltern Firehouse.

T

he famous entrance on West Street near Covent Garden - often besieged by paparazzi during its peak of celebrity fame — opened its doors in time for its 100th anniversary, following a six-month overhaul designed “to make the interiors as glamorous as the diners”. High-profile customers with reservations in The Ivy’s first few days back in business included model Lily Cole, magician Dynamo, actors Hugh Grant, Luke Evans and Steven Berkoff, and former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson. The Ivy’s director Fernando Peire said the modernisation had come at a time when London’s dining scene was unrecognisable from the “culinary dark ages” era of its last refurbishment in 1990, with exciting new destinations luring London’s beautiful people. The refurbishment, led by interior designer Martin Brudnizki , who also worked on sister restaurant Ivy Market Grill, sees the tiny bar at the entrance giving way to a new central bar serving cocktails. Other welcome improvements include softer lighting and acoustic engineering to turn background noise into buzz rather than din. There is also new artwork from Damien Hirst, Howard Hodgkin, Maggi Hambling, Tom Hackney and Simon LeahyClark. Mr Peire said he wanted The Ivy to attract younger “generation Google” diners who may have previously seen it as old-fashioned, but without ever losing its traditions of style and elegance. He said: “We do sail against the style of trend. If we wanted to be trendy we would have people sitting in the sort of chair they last sat in when they were at school. We are all about comfort here, but not being fuddy duddies. What’s wrong with comfort?” The menu too has had a revamp although traditionalists

16 AUGUST2015

with a hankering for the classics need not fear. The restaurant’s legendary shepherd’s pie is still there as are staples such as bang bang chicken, haddock and chips, bangers and mash and of course the eponymous hamburger. Executive Chef Gary Lee’s updated menu sees the introduction of more Asian flavours, trendy health foods such as chia seeds and quinoa in the newly robust salad section and the addition of ‘sea and shells’ dedicated to fish and shellfish aficionados. As well as lemon confit salmon and fillet of cod on offer, there is also grilled native oyster, plaice fillets, seared yellow fin tuna and Isle of Mull scallops. New too is a section dedicated entirely to potatoes with chips, hash browns, minted Jersey Royals, matchstick chips and a choice of plain or cheesy mash. Starters include a raw and pickled vegetable salad; barbecued squid; sauteed sweetbreads, and burrata with fried zucchini flower while the main courses feature pork chops, lamb rump and calves liver. In April, many of the contents of The Ivy including artwork, cutlery, glassware and linen napkins were auctioned by Sotheby’s, raising more than £1 million in aid of Child Bereavement UK. Everything from entrance doors to the ladies’ loo sign and the cloakroom tip tray went under the hammer - some indication of the extent of the redesign. LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS Is alive with The Sound of Music T

he Last Night of the Proms will come alive with the Sound of Music next month, as the BBC Proms offers budding singers the chance to see themselves on BBC One as part of a special video montage to The Sound of Music. Budding singers have until 30 August to submit their videos singing Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music. A selection of these entries will be included within a video montage, broadcast on BBC One as part of the Last Night of the Proms, and shown at the Royal Albert Hall and at all four Proms in the Park events across the UK on Saturday 12 September. To send contributions to the Do-Re-Mi video montage, visit the Radio 2 website at bbc.co.uk/radio2. Contributions can be made individually, or as a group - and can be filmed using a camera, a smartphone or webcam. UK’s rarest private collection of £8million coloured gemstones

To Be Auctioned Online September 2015

One of Europe’s largest private collections of precious coloured natural gemstones is to be sold in a multi-million pound international online auction offering.

S

ome of the World’s rarest and purest Rubies, Emeralds, Tanzanites, Sapphires and other prized gems forming over 680 gemstones from the esteemed David Jerome Collection are to be presented to the international market by John Pye’s Luxury Assets Division, a division of John Pye Auctions. The rate of rising values of coloured gemstones are now outstripping those of Diamonds as royals and celebrities alike, including the Duchess of Cambridge, highlight their appeal and have raised their highly prized profile, establishing 2015 as ‘The Year of the Coloured Gemstone’. Ethically sourced directly from precious gemstone mines all over the world – including but not limited to Burma, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Zambia – only the finest natural stones have been selected for the collection, valued at over £8 million retail. All precious gemstones within the collection were originally sourced as loose gems. It is only in recent years these gems have been set and mounted among diamonds, into pieces of fine jewellery, to showcase their desirability and make them a suitable offering for the international public auction market. The anonymous owner has collected the gemstones for over 40 years after buying a highly-prized 133 carat Tanzanite - which ignited a passion to source a range of gemstones from all over the world. Through decades of global travel, the private client has become established and recognised by gemstone miners as one of Europe’s preeminent buyers of natural coloured gemstones. The collection includes a matching set of 35 carat Zambian Emerald earrings with an estimated value of £500,000 to £600,000. John Pye gemstone valuer Ian Hall said: “This is quite simply a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy from an exquisite and extremely valuable collection of gemstones. We believe the collection to be certainly the largest in the UK, if not Europe.

24 AUGUST2015

Every gemstone in the collection has its own independently-issued certificate, a guarantee of both authenticity and quality, including Gem Research Swisslab (GRS) Certificates showing that they are the purest quality in their natural form.” Coloured gemstones have been rapidly growing in popularity and these rising asset values are being reflected in auction rooms globally, with a World record realisation set this Spring for a Ruby sold at auction in Geneva for £19.4m. John Pye’s private client, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he wasn’t sorry to see the collection broken up because he wants others to enjoy them. “I am an avid collector and I love sparkly things,” he said. “I love the buying, the finding of the mine and acquiring the very best stones. The best mines from all over the world come directly to me with their finest stones. We are giving people the opportunity to buy the most beautiful stones in the world, just as nature created them. “I am now happy for the stones to be sold so other people can enjoy them as much as I have.” The owner has travelled all over the World to source the stones which he says are of “Bond Street quality”. The collection of precious gemstone jewellery ranges in value from an 8.96 carat pink Topaz ring with a £600 estimate, to an extremely rare matching set of Zambian Emerald earrings totalling 35 carats estimated to be valued at over £500,000.

The first auction in September will offer

345 coloured stones.

Gentleman’s

JOLLY

The Gentleman’s Jolly was born out of a combined passion for cars, international travel, a general love of the finer things in life, and a lack of any offering which caters for the discerning petrol head and adventurer!

T

he pivotal moment came in early 2014 when founder Daniel Ralph was looking for a road trip adventure but became somewhat despondent with the choices, or lack of choice on offer. “It seemed that you either had to be a snap back wearing, skateboarding burnout king or a stayed and traditional enthusiast who cringed at the sound of a slight tyre squeal. There was no in-between, no one was providing the kind of event which allowed you to combine your passion of driving a supercar on an organized event , to beautiful destinations whilst having an enormous amount of fun, and which also had a certain level of style. Simply put, no one was catering for the true Supercar owner” This year’s Gentleman’s Jolly will take the Jollyers on an epic 4 day adventure starting from the heart of London on Friday the 18th September and will stop in Paris, Geneva and Milan , before ending the 4 day event in the famous Casino Square in the heart of Monte Carlo, with a red carpet Grand Finale awards ceremony and dinner to be held at 7pm on Monday, the 21st September in Beaulieu sur Mer, by the Mediterranean, at an exclusive location. By day the Jollyers will experience testing, yet beautiful driving along some of Europe’s most stunning routes which have been carefully chosen to make this one of the most memorable and desirable driving events on the enthusiast’s calendar. By night Jollyers will be able to relax and enjoy exclusive evening dinners in each of the cities we stop at and go on to taste the night life if they wish in some of the cities’ hottest night spots! As well as the annual international Jolly, The Gentleman’s Jolly provides monthly meets and events throughout the year which give the Jollyers a great opportunity to get to know one another, making the annual international Jolly that more enjoyable with the knowledge that you are in great company and making some good friends along the way! Understanding why we hold The Gentleman’s Jolly is important for all current and future participants .It really is both a passion and challenge for its’ founder, Daniel Ralph. A car enthusiast since a toddler and with his teenage years spent travelling the world surrounded by modified metal and flashing lights, The Gentleman’s Jolly has been many years in the making and we are committed to continuing the development of this annual event, taking it to far flung corners of the globe as well as exploring the beauty of Europe. The Gentleman’s Jolly is also developing as a lifestyle brand and by drawing upon our ever growing portfolio of lifestyle brands and services, we intend to build and deliver events which we aim to become the road event of choice for those who wish to combine their passion for driving supercars, whilst enjoying stylish travel to first class locations. To celebrate and mark the occasion of the start of the Gentleman’s Jolly Race 2015 from London to Paris, Geneva ,Milan and Monte Carlo, our partners Incrwd Global are hosting “ The Jolly Party” on the 10th September to be held at the DSTRKT nightclub in London. West End Legend

‘The American Bar’ at The Stafford London Celebrates UK-US Special Relationship During WW2 The Stafford London served as a club for American and Canadian officers until 1945 Nancy Wake, a highly decorated war hero continues to influence The American Bar with ‘The White Mouse’ cocktail honouring her The American Bar’s collection of memorabilia is a mix of items donated by guests started by an American who donated a wooden carving of an American eagle

I

n the heart of St James’s sits The American Bar, a London legend, brimming with a unique history and character, the perfect destination to enjoy cocktails with true spirit. During the 1930s, it was the fashion for most West End hotels to rename their bars ‘The American Bar’ in order to attract the business of the increasing numbers of North American visitors. The Stafford London is one of only two bars in London who retained the name. With the US friends came the US drinks that the intimate bar is now famous for such as Manhattans, Sidecars and Martinis. The personal gifts that decorate the American Bar have been donated mainly by North American guests over the years and include trophies, flags and other mementos from across the Atlantic. Just to the left of the bar, guests will find a very special, always reserved bar stool. This was the bar stool chosen by Nancy Wake who visited and stayed at The Stafford London for two years. Every day, she would enjoy a Gin & Tonic. Nancy Wake was a highly decorated war hero, working in the French Resistance. One of the most popular cocktails at The American Bar is dedicated to Nancy Wake. The ‘White Mouse’ is the cocktail. The name was chosen as this was the name the Nazis called Nancy Wake because she was never caught. The ‘White Mouse’ is made with Saffron Gin shaken with lemon juice and honey and Champagne is also added with star anise to garnish. The cocktail is priced £18.00. The American Bar delivers a strong selection of both Martinis, Scotch Whisky and American-style Whiskeys along with a monthly signature cocktail. Other standout US themed cocktails include the ‘Pride of Baltimore’ made with Bacardi white run with a touch of Dubonnet

32 AUGUST2015

together with orange Curacao, orange bitter and grapefruit juice. The team at The American Bar deliver colourful stories and tales from across the years. Bar manager Benoit Provost joined The Stafford London in 1993 whilst head mixologist Erik Rychnavsky continues to ensure each cocktail is related to a special Stafford story. The American Bar serves lunch, dinner and light bites throughout the day. The 2001 film Charlotte Grey featuring Cate Blanchett adopted from the novel of the same name, drew inspiration from Nancy Wake (pictured below in “Nancy’s Corner” at The American Bar). Many countries including the UK, US, France and Australia, awarded her several honours after the war. The UK awarded her the George Medal whilst the US awarded her the Medal of Freedom. Visiting The American Bar is similar to being in a gallery. Every available wall and surface is crammed and aside from diverse memorabilia, celebrity fans have also signed photographs for the walls. So excited with the quantity of items on display, long term guest at the hotel, Peggy Clare decided to write a book about the bar and its memorabilia having stayed at the hotel on numerous occasions over a 30 year period. ‘Ties That Bind, A Biography of a Bar’ by Peggy Clare was published in 1990. The bar opens out onto a wonderful mews outdoor terrace ideal for alfresco dining and cocktails. Raise a glass at The American Bar and forge a special relationship with classic and contemporary cocktails, all with a story to share. A

visit to Silverholme, in the heart of the English Lake District, is the ultimate in relaxed luxury. Located on the 5,000 acre Graythwaite estate, this grade II listed Georgian zero carbon footprint country house is the perfect venue to relax and unwind with family and friends. Built in 1820, Silverholme has been immaculately restored and each room has been given its own original style, blending period character and modern comfort. The property sleeps 16 in eight individually-styled en-suite bedrooms, and further two in the original Coachman’s Cottage close by in the gardens. Silverholme has four receptions rooms including an enormous kitchen and a library, plus a dedicated TV room with 50” screen and surround sound. Outside, beautiful large gardens sweep down to the shore of Lake Windermere. The Graythwaite Estate is owned by the Sandys, one of the Lake District’s oldest families who have lived in the area for more than 500 years. This landscape has a rich literary and creative heritage; Graythwaite’s charming woodlands were renowned as one of poet William Wordsworth’s favourite walking spots and featured in Beatrix Potter’s short story ‘The Fairy Caravan’. The house and estate have impressive green credentials, with Silverholme having been awarded Gold for Green Tourism, the highest accolade by the Green Tourism Business Scheme. Softwood chippings from the estate’s trees supply a 100-kilowatt woodchip biomass boiler, producing the heating and hot water, whilst the house also has its own water turbine to provide all the electricity needed to run Silverholme and its surrounding buildings. A carbon neutral Georgian manor house! Available for parties and as an exclusive wedding venue, Silverholme itself is licensed for ceremonies for up to 25 guests, whilst the adjacent Coach House can 34 AUGUST2015

The wedding celebrations then take place in a marquee/tipi which is sited in front of the house on purpose built astro-turf grounds or down by the lake shore, both with astonishing views of Lake Windermere. Guests staying at Silverholme can make the most of this very special location, with concierge services to help plan an almost endless supply of leisure pursuits. The Silverholme team are on hand to take all the hassle out of the arrangements, ensuring visitors can truly kick back, catch up and escape from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Activities available include fly-fishing on Graythwaite’s own private tarn or a helicopter flight from Silverholme over the dramatic vista of surrounding lakes and mountains. Other exclusive experiences range from canoeing and kayaking on Windermere, to spa sessions, wine tasting or perhaps a murder mystery themed dinner party. Silverholme guests can even opt for the services of a private butler, plus full catering and housekeeping services. Anyone staying at the property has access to a heated swimming pool and table tennis room. During the summer months Graythwaite Hall gardens are open to visitors, the first commission for Victorian designer Thomas Mawson, who later went on to lay out the Peace Palace Gardens at The Hague, Netherlands. Everything about Silverholme encompasses luxury, carefully orchestrated by Silverholme’s seneschal (Sophie Schofield) to make each precious moment memorable, we hope to leave you wishing you could stay forever... FEATURE Q. HOW DOES SKC FIT INTO THE SOUTH KENSINGTON SOCIAL SCENE? A. South Kensington remains a village like community but very international with a cosmopolitan feel. SKC offers a platform for community, bringing together like-minded locals under one roof to socialise, be healthy, eat good food and unwind. We are also partnering with the local institutions and museums to provide interesting talks and events as well as bringing to life the important cultural significance of the area. Q. WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU WITNESSED OVER THE YEAR AND WHERE DO YOU THINK SOUTH KENSINGTON IS HEADING? A. South Kensington is finding its energy again. New restaurants, local foodie markets and more avant garde boutiques are popping up, making the neighborhood more attractive than ever and reestablishing it as a destination. Q. FAVOURITE DISH / DRINK AT SKC? A. There are many but I would have to go with the linguine vongole or the crudo of sea bass with tomatoes & olives. My drink would be Jax’s coconut water.

SOUTH KENSINGTON CLUB We asked Luca Del Bono, owner and founder of the South Kensington Club how his prestigious and private members club has become the epitome of elegance, style and community spirit...

Q. FAVOURITE TREATMENT? A. Definitely reflexology, with a busy life in hospitality this is a big part of my health regime. Our resident reflexologist, Charlotte Crowther, practices with a revolutionary method, combining ancient Chinese medicine with western methods... her treatments are the most relaxing and restorative. Q. TELL US MORE ABOUT THE ADVENTURE/TRAVEL ELEMENT OF THE CLUB? A. SKC is all about mind, body, spirit nourishment; travel being one of the most mind opening platforms, it is a big pillar for the club. Our ‘Voyager Programme’ is designed to inspire members to discover new frontiers and find more balance with nature. The programme is composed of three distinct elements: a monthly lecture series; the opportunity to join unique, tailor-made expeditions inspired by the lectures; and preparation / training for these adventures carried out by specialist fitness instructors at the club (depending on how extreme or not these journeys might be). Q.WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES TO TRAVEL AND WHY? A. With most of our planet rapidly being built up, my favourite places to travel are those least contaminated , with raw exceptional beauty and force of nature like Stromboli. Q. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BRING IN JAPANESE, INDIAN, RUSSIAN AND TURKISH INFLUENCES? WHAT OTHER COUNTRIES / TRAVEL ARE YOU INFLUENCED BY THAT ARE REFLECTED IN THE CLUB ETHOS? A. People today are curious travelers and seek to experience cultural influences from all over the world. We are now seeking far more of what we experienced abroad when we get home to enrich the sprit… Bathing rituals have always fascinated me, as such an important part of Eastern cultures.. with both the Wellness and Slow movements well underway , it seemed a relevant time to bring the bathhouse culture to London. At the end of the day, as humans, we are all in pursuit of the same things : happiness, fullness of love and the pursuit of enrichment (depending how we quantify this – material/non material). So all our courses are similar; it is the methodology which is different. We respect the traditions of different cultures, as we seek to find our own greater fulfillment. The ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships 2015 is set to be a family affair this year

Families encouraged to take to their canoes as the World Championships makes its way to London

W

ith new figures from British Canoeing revealing that 1.5 million people went canoeing last year, the organisation is now trying to encourage more families to sample the sport ahead of the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships 2015 in London this September. With statistics showing that female participation rates are now at the highest they have been since 2002 – a 56% increase – the next step for the sport is to encourage more families onto the water, especially since participation in canoeing is currently highest among students, workers and parents. The ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships, which are taking place on the Olympic course at Lee Valley White Water Centre, will have much more of a family feel this year – with a dedicated expo area featuring the best of the Great British Summertime – including food and drinks stands, a bouncy castle, climbing wall and even a Pimms tent for thirsty parents. Howard Blackman, Head of Participation at British Canoeing, said: “Canoeing has experienced a surge in popularity since London 2012, but we want to make sure that people know that canoeing is an inclusive sport which is the perfect hobby for families. Disciplines like slalom are also great to watch – and with an Olympic level course on our doorstep, it’s the perfect chance to sample something different this summer. “We’ve got plenty to keep families of all shapes and sizes entertained – whether you’re looking to try your hand at canoeing or simply want to see the world’s best canoeists battling it out down a thrilling white water course.

42 AUGUST2015

Why not pack a picnic and enjoy the best of the Great British Summertime whilst also sampling some of the most exciting sport the UK has to offer?” Sports fans will also be treated to displays from a host of British talent, including 2012 Olympic Champion Etienne Stott with new partner Mark Proctor and Olympic Silver Medallists David Florence and Richard Hounslow. There will also be a number of future stars taking to the water, including U23 World Champion Adam Burgess and two-time World Silver medallist Mallory Franklin. Canoe slalom is often described as canoeing’s most challenging discipline, as competitors tackle white water rapids which test the athletes speed, agility and precision. Paddlers must navigate a sequence of gates in number order, set up over rapids, waves, eddies and currents along a 300m stretch of water.

Tickets start from as little as £10/£5 for Adults/Under-16s, with discounts available for families and members of British Canoeing. Why family audiences really are

the future of theatre

I

n 2012 the Office for National Statistics and the government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport published “Taking Part”, a report drawn from research into the UK’s leisure habits. For those of us in the theatre industry, the results proved a fact that most of us already had a pretty good idea of – namely, that theatre is losing out to cinema, and by a huge margin. One statistic stood out above all others. According to the report, whilst over a quarter of adults attend the cinema at least once a month, more than three quarters of adults had not been to see a play or a musical in the last year. There are many factors contributing to this, the most obvious of which is surely cost - made even more prohibitive when it’s a family outing. Four tickets to a West End show could easily run to over two hundred pounds, and that’s before you’ve paid for transport or parking and dinner for the family. Equally, for many adults, theatre still carries the stigma of an “educational” activity, something that they first encountered in the company of their English teacher on an organised trip, as a way to animate a novel that they didn’t enjoy reading in the first place. I’ve been misquoted talking about this before and it’s important to say that I think theatre visits with school are essential and a fantastic part of any course, and some students will be lucky enough to see a show that offers a light-bulb moment in their struggle to access a novel or a play in the classroom and also show them just what theatre can do, but unfortunately that’s not always the case. However, if those teenagers watching Macbeth had been going to the theatre since they were very young, they would see the magic when it’s there and not write off theatre if it’s not. Whilst schools can help the situation, the obligation to turn the tide, to establish theatre as a pastime as regular and instinctive as cinema, lies with the theatres themselves. Theatres, and particularly

44 AUGUST2015

local theatres, have the power to change the public’s perception of what a trip to see a play or musical is all about, to change it from something that people do at great expense for a special occasion to something they consider doing as readily as eating out, going to the cinema or a gig, or watching a sports event. One initiative that has increasingly supported that idea is the annual Family Arts Festival, which this year takes place across the country in October. We will be participating in the national programme with three exciting shows – Metta Theatre’s circus-filled adaptation of Jeanne Willis and Gwen Millward’s enchanting story The King Of Tiny Things, Tall Stories autumnal treat The Snow Dragon and Peaceful Lion Productions’ adaptation of Rosie’s Magic Horse by Russell Hoban. Recognising the long-term importance of family audiences, providing high quality shows for them and building lasting relationships that can continue into adulthood, is the only sure way to secure the future of this industry. Without that, theatre will be reduced to the once-a-year birthday present or the international tourist attraction that the West End increasingly represents. Is your child ready for the new school year? With the new school year within view, Isla’s Mum Kirstie, knew her daughter wasn’t ready for it by any means. Kirstie: “I remember one of her teachers saying “Oh, it will be ok, she’ll catch up by the end of the year.” That was at the beginning of this year. But as we were nearing towards March/April time, that was when I said “No, we need to get her reading, especially before next year. She can’t be going into Year 2 with no reading skills.

I

sla hadn’t been doing very well at school, at all. She was getting to her second year of school and she wasn’t reading very well. She wasn’t writing at all. Her attention was really, really poor and she was often getting in trouble for distracting people. She found it very difficult to listen. She’d had eye sight problems from when she was 6 months old. So I kind of put it down to that. But at the end of her reception year, I thought there must be something not quite right. She wasn’t grasping any reading. She would never pick up a book. She’d never want to let me read to her. Her elder sister loved reading, and she loved me reading to her. So I definitely knew then, that something wasn’t quite right. CHALLENGES AT SCHOOL Her school picked up on her coordination, constantly knocking things over. But her teachers never actually said anything might be wrong. It was myself that picked up on that, from her level of

reading and comparing her to her sister. They did say that she slightly struggled with reading & listening. But they never said it could be dyslexia or it could be ADHD or anything like that – never! HELP FROM DAD My Dad had a card dropped through the door a couple of months ago and it was him that actually said,“Well what about this centre? You know, just go for an assessment.” We started treatment a week after her assessment. Which was just brilliant. I didn’t realise they could fit me in so quickly. I was just over the moon, although quite apprehensive, because I didn’t quite believe all the stories I’d heard. But I thought it was well worth giving it a go anyway. The first treatment was absolutely fantastic. Isla really, really enjoyed it. She was very over excited, jumping around & she didn’t listen very well. After about 2 sessions she was getting the hang of

Just 2 weeks - easy to complete in the summer holidays it and it was getting to the stage where she couldn’t wait to go to her sessions, which was great! Before that she’d never really been bothered about school. She found lots of excuses to come home from school, often pulling a ‘sickie’. She’s been excited about doing the treatment, she’s loved the homework. After a couple of sessions, she actually asked to do the homework, which is quite bizarre!

SO, IS YOUR CHILD REALLY READY FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR? If not, contact the Alison Lawson Centre about completing a program during the summer holidays. Meaning your child can go back next year able to put their best foot forward. Reach them on 01935 403260 or treatment@dyslexia-treatment.co.uk.

PROOF OF THE PUDDING We noticed her improvement from the second session, where she moved up a book level in her reading. By the third session she’d moved up another book level. Then a couple of weeks later her teacher actually came up to me as I picked her up to take her to the sessions and said “I don’t know what’s happening, but her listening is just amazing. Her observation is improved, her coordination’s improved and also her patience and frustration is a lot better. I don’t know what’s happening but it’s just fantastic!”And that was her teacher, saying it to me. She used to try and read with a reading ruler, which was red and blue. From about half way through the treatment she didn’t read with it at all and she’s gone up now 3 book stages. I was just over the moon - three book stages in a matter of weeks! Her handwriting’s really improved too. She used to write really big, scrawly, mirrored letters a lot of the time. She’d often miss letters out. Now her writing is a lot smaller, it’s really, really neat. It’s just amazing! I feel like crying. It was well worth it, I’d do it again, a million times, definitely. It was well worth it, every single penny! I’ve recommended it to lots of people already.

Strike a pose in London

T

he sixties were swinging, the seventies went hippie, the eighties spawned punk, the nineties got grunge and today? According to Gity Monsef, Creative Director of Fashion and Textile Museum, “the world is getting smaller - everything cross-integrates. London is a place of eccentricity and creativity and possibilities - it’s more about expression than anywhere else in the world.” London is at the heart of designer and independent fashion with London Fashion Week leading the way. Organised by British Fashion Council and moving to Soho for the Spring/Summer 2016 Collections in September, prestigious designers present their next season’s collections to a star-studded audience, with high street brands following suite with their own take on new designs from the catwalk. In Summer 2012, London Fashion Week for the first time introduced Men’s Collections, and now just as soughtafter and exciting as the Women’s catwalk. Leading designer brands have made London their home with exclusive boutiques such as Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry, Gucci, Emporio Armani, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Prada, just some that you can discover on Mayfair’s Bond Street. Sloane Street brings you equally high-profile expensive brands like Boodles, Cartier, Dior, Gucci, Bulgari and Alexandre Paris. Mount Street in Mayfair has become a designer lover’s paradise with Christian Louboutin, Dunhill London, Pringle of Scotland, Loewe Madrid among the stores selling their exclusive collections. Exciting new boutiques coming to Mount Street include Celine, with Victoria Beckham opening her first flagship store in the Autumn. High-profile department stores like Selfridges, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Fenwick and shopping areas like Westfield, all have designer labels under one roof. There are a huge number of trendy independent boutiques across London offering their own exclusive ranges if you want something that little bit different. Streets such as the famous King’s Road for example have countless shopping opportunities for both elegant and quirky tastes. Mary Quant and Vivienne Westwood continue to maintain the exciting reputation that King’s Road established in the swinging sixties. Vibrant Camden offers some amazing independent stores if you are looking for the ultimate in vintage style. London is a fashion mecca, bringing you the most exclusive, the most elegant and the most quirky when it comes to fashion, there is no other city in the world that can offer such versatility.

Jermyn Street

Quintessentially Stylish Jermyn Street is an air of elegance, class and distinction for which it has been very well known for over 300 years.

J

ermyn Street dates back to 1664 when Charles II authorised Henry Jermyn, the Earl of St Albans, to develop an area close to St James’ Palace. It has flourished ever since and holds a worldwide reputation for high quality British artistry and craftsmanship. The street is home to London’s finest men’s tailors, shirt makers, suppliers of leather goods, food and wine merchants, restaurants, hotels and art galleries. Historically, Jermyn Street’s shops outfitted the aristocracy at The Court of St James’s with bespoke shirt makers; tailors; boot makers; hatters: everything for the elegant gentleman. That tradition continues today with Jermyn Street known throughout the world for its prestigious shirt makers offering a wide range to suit every age and taste. Now ladies can also find exquisite clothing in many shops and, of course, there are numerous other shops punctuating the street selling jewellery; cigars; fine wine and food, especially cheese; perfume; fine art; objets

d’art and tapestries, as well as outfitters, hatters and boot makers: in fact everything one would expect of the street synonymous with British style, luxury and service. Over the years Jermyn Street’s distinguished residents have included the likes of Sir William Stanley; Sir John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough; Sir Isaac Newton; William Pitt; Sir Walter Scott; the poet Thomas Gray; William Gladstone; and W. M. Thackeray. Leading names such as Benson & Clegg, Church’s, Crockett & Jones, Dunhill, DAKS, Emmett, Favourbrook, Floris, Foster & Son, Hackett, Harvie & Hudson, John Lobb, Links of London, New & Lingwood, Paxton & Whitfield, Thomas Pink and Turnbull & Asser, welcome you to their prestigious stores. In its 300-year history Jermyn Street has always retained its distinctive character. This applies to the ambience of the street, the services it offers, and to the shops and businesses and the people who own and run them. Inevitably there have been changes in the architecture over the years, with the old houses converted into shops and some facades modernised. However, much of the original essence of Jermyn Street lingers on and it still provides a quintessentially British experience. HAWES & CURTIS’ FALL COLLECTION H inspired byThe Man from U.N.C.L.E. through a partnership withWarner Bros

eritage brand Hawes & Curtis today unveiled a partnership with Warner Bros, brokered by their partnership agency Lime Communications and the new Hollywood blockbuster The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - creating a stylish collection of ‘60s inspired outfits influenced by the movie. Producing high quality clothing for gentlemen and ladies since 1913, and boasting three Royal Warrants during that period, Jermyn St favourite Hawes & Curtis has evolved into a lifestyle brand which encompasses quintessential British style. Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer as Illya Kuryakin (“The Social Network”) in director Guy Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E,” a fresh taken on the hugely popular 1960’s television series, in cinemas in August 14th. Hawes & Curtis has grabbed the opportunity to showcase its phenomenal heritage, which has long been acclaimed by aristocracy and Hollywood’s elite, by recreating three of the looks from the films scenes and an overall collection that brings out the atmosphere of the time. For men, exquisitely tailored suits and shirts from the company’s premium 1913 Collection steal the show. The suits are made from the finest Italian wool while the Jermyn Street style shirts are made from 140s cotton with silk touch and feature some stunning additional details such as

Mother of Pearl buttons. The ties are the same design as the ones in the movie. Tie-pins, cufflinks and pocket squares add sartorial flourishes and showcase a welcome return to the days when dressing to the nines was important seven days a week. Hawes & Curtis dresses the ladies with monochrome blouses that create a sleek silhouette and the two hero blouses were inspired by the long dresses of the character played by Elizabeth Debicki. For the more casual Weekend Collection, Hawes & Curtis has recreated the third and casual look with soft turtle-neck sweater, leather jacket, cap and leather weekender bag. Owner Touker Suleyman, who’s currently starring in the new series of Dragons’ Den, said partnering with Warner Bros in this iconic remake of the series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was something natural for both brands: a marriage of style and sophistication resulting into British Intelligence. “As soon as we saw the trailer for the film we knew it had bags of style,” he said. “All of the characters are impeccably dressed and we were excited to recreate the Looks and even produce a collection inspired by the film’s atmosphere. This partnership is another step of communicating our brand’s evolution into the British lifestyle territory.” THE DETAILS For more information go to www.hawesandcurtis.co.uk

Back Pain Commonly asked questions...

Mr Rajiv Bajekal

by

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Highgate Private Hospital

Q: “WHY DO I HAVE BACK PAIN?” A lot of different conditions cause back pain and it can be difficult to say what the cause is. It is a very common problem like a cold. In general we think of back pain as being of serious causes if there are ‘red flag’ symptoms or signs. Your Doctor or Specialist will be able to distil this from taking a history or examining you. In general mechanical causes originate from the discs or joints of the back and usually respond to simple measures such as exercise and medication, with the passage of time. If issues persistent then further investigations may be required. Q: “WHAT IS SCIATICA?” Sciatica is pain going down the leg from the back – classically beyond the knee. The commonest cause is a nerve under tension or pressure, often from a slipped disc in the back. It is often a condition that is very painful and limiting. In general nearly 80 percent of people will have improvement in pain in 6 weeks but if it is difficult to manage the pain. Seeing a specialist for pain relief by a spinal injection may help calm the pain down. Q: “WHAT IS STENOSIS?” Spinal stenosis is a condition where the nerves are trapped in the spine usually as a result of wear and tear allowing new bones to grow inwards onto the nerves. It is a common diagnosis in people above the age of 60 and may cause symptoms such as pain down the legs when walking. In general this progresses slowly but pain relief could be achieved by exercise, injection or surgery if the pain becomes severe. Q: “WHEN SHOULD I WORRY ABOUT MY BACK PAIN?” Most back pain is benign however if you are sleeping poorly, are awake through the night after waking up in pain, if you have 72 AUGUST2015

weakness or numbness in the legs or bottom areas, if you feel unwell, have a temperature or have lost weight without intending to and if there is a history of you having suffered with cancer in the past- it is worth seeking medical help. If you find that pain killers have to be increased frequently by your doctor and despite this, pain is poorly controlled-there is cause for concern. Q: “WHAT IS CAUDA EQUINA SYNDROME?” This is a constellation of symptoms that should be taken very seriously but is fortunately very rare. In this condition a large slipped disc compresses the nerves going down to the legs and the organs such as the bladder and bowel. It presents catastrophically, classically with severe pain in the back and both legs, numbness in the back passage area, difficulty in passing water and sometimes incontinence of the bowel and urine. This is a surgical emergency and it is advisable to attend the nearest A and E if this problem occurs. Delay in seeking medical attention could be catastrophic. In this condition surgery is mandatory to get a good outcome. Mr Rajiv Bajekal is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon available for consultation on Thursdays at Highgate Private Hospital. He performs a wide range of back procedures. THE DETAILS Please contact us to make an appointment call 020 7965 7350 email enquiries@highgatehospital.co.uk or visit www.highgatehospital.co.uk/LM

STAR TRAINER URGES

BRITS TO START CYCLING

F

ollowing Chris Froome’s historic Tour de France win and ahead of next month’s Tour of Britain, the UK’s leading personal trainer Matt Roberts is urging more people to start cycling. “You will be surprised how much you can enjoy cycling. It burns calories rapidly, is great for the heart and lungs. Mentally the rewards from cycling are huge. You can move relatively fast for the amount of effort you put in, meaning you can cover large distances. As a result you can see some amazing landscapes and wonderful sites,” says Matt.

BENEFITS OF CYCLING 1. Builds core strength “Cycling is a complete exercise method, so it works all the muscles in the lower body and works an incredibly strong core” 2. Low impact / less strain “The physical impact on the body is low and the strain on the main joints, the ankles, knees and hips is low” 3. High efficiency “The energy required to cycle efficiently is relatively low, requiring less movement which in turn will boost fitness levels and fat loss return” 4. Fitness Control “Cycling is a very controllable activity so you can work very effectively at different activity levels. It is a great way of working both the endurance energy system and also working on the Stamina end of fitness” 5. Social / community “Cyclists are a friendly bunch and very supportive. It is normal to join other groups on rides to pass the time of day or work on pacing” The Prime Minister’s personal trainer also recommended a series of routes for cyclists in the Capital. “Not only are most exercising activities in London free but very easily accessible, giving you a well needed break from the frantic energy of the City. From Hampstead Heath and Alexander Palace, where you can get fantastic scenic views of the City to Richmond or the Olympic Park where you can cycle in complete safety, there is a wealth of areas to explore,” says Matt. 74 AUGUST2015

TOP CYCLING SPOTS IN LONDON 1. Docklands to Mayfair Cycle past the likes of Trafalgar Square and the Mall with this route from Canary Wharf to Park Lane 2. Kensington Gardens Cycle through the Broad Walk, Palace Walk and Mount Walk at the peaceful Kensington Gardens 3. Hampton Court This 750 acre park is open to the public and sits next to Hampton Court Palace and Bushy Park in south London 4. Victoria Park This route is open to the 200 acres of parkland available to roam in East London on what can be a short or long cycle 5. Hampstead Heath Spend hours cycling around Hampstead Heath and give your calves a full workout by challenging some of the steepest hills in London.

Personal Trainers

A Status Symbol Or The Quickest Way To Fitness?

T

he decision to hire a personal trainer is an empowering one. Whether you’re new to exercise or you’ve been working out on your own, using a personal trainer can give you that extra nudge. But you’ve got to show up for the experience, body and soul, and be really clear about creating a two-way exchange that works for you. MAKING IT WORK Meeting potential trainers is an important first step. Ask around for recommendations first from friends and work colleagues. Ask about their credentials, how long they’ve been training and whom they’re certified through. Focus on someone with national certifications or a trainer with a degree in exercise science. To help determine if a prospective trainer is right for you, you need to ensure that they can help you achieve your goals – losing weight, building strength, pre-race training etc Also a good trainer would have no trouble providing references , so speak to their other clients to get a better picture. Beyond that, personal dynamics are key. In other words, it helps if you genuinely like the trainer.

cardio fitness and body weight. If you haven’t worked out recently, your trainer may recommend an initial period of training designed to help you build a fitness base and avoid injury, making all your subsequent workouts more effective. DEVELOP A STRONG WORKING RELATIONSHIP Establishing an optimal training relationship is crucial if you are going to be spending regular time together - so you need to make sure you find someone with the right skills and chemistry. As with any good relationship, you should feel like the trainer brings out the best in you. A good trainer will be open to answering any questions or concerns you bring to each session. The more you get to know your trainer, the more you’ll automatically hear his or her voice directing you through the moves. You should feel challenged, but not pushed beyond your limits. Afterwards, ask yourself: Are you happy with how it went? Do you feel empowered and motivated? For some clients, a limited package of training sessions is all they want. Other clients are in it for the long haul: They have the means to pay for a trainer indefinitely, and they like the ongoing accountability and motivation the trainer provides. As long as the cost-benefit analysis is working in your favour, the decision to keep training is easy.

Finding the right Personal Trainer can transform your health and fitness efforts.

FOCUS ON CLEAR GOALS Prior to your first session, discuss your objectives so that he or she can come up with an appropriate plan to achieve them. This may involve some assessment drills - you want to have an initial measure of things like posture, balance, flexibility and strength. Depending on your goals, you might also measure body-fat percentage, 76 AUGUST2015

Aman therapists have been practicing daily meditation since the launch of the Spa in 2009 to find a personal balance as it helps them sense and craft the most unique and tailored treatments for their guests. This will be the first time their therapists open their doors and welcome guests to participate in their daily habitual. Guests will be welcomed in the lobby by an Aman representative and ushered to the spa into a cool and dim-light treatment room where they will be asked to remove their shoes and turn off any technological equipment. Aman Spa Manager Rene Van Eyssen explains “Meditation encourages you to observe your emotions, which improves awareness of the present moment, bringing clarity and peace. The result is a total renewal of mind and spirit.”

softest MARBLE... THE

At first glance this new fabric from LELIEVRE appears to be marble, it has the sheen and subtle colour shading of the noble veined rock but close your eyes, stroke the surface and there is a warm seductive softness.

C

arriere is inspired by the marble slices hewn and polished at the hands of craftsmen since ancient Roman times. For the full trompe l’oeil effect this refined wave design is woven in rich heavy satin adding a realistic gleam and slinky tactile surface. While using modern technical processes the weave and colour variations mimic the warp yarns used in traditional hand weaving techniques. These effects can also vary from one production to another and each panel has an individual cut marble appearance. There is also no need to align a repeat when making up. The fluidity of curtains in Carriere creates classical curves for a sensuous draped appearance worthy of any sculptor, while stretching the fabric as walling gives the impression of a luxurious marble clad room. Of course you could also create faux marble columns or even your own marble arch!

82 AUGUST2015

Strong enough for upholstery, it is possible to cover chairs, stools, screens and even sofas for a smooth sculpted look that even Michelangelo might envy! Carriere is available in 4 sophisticated colours - Onyx, Amethyst, Quartz and Jade. In 100% Polyester Trevira CS for curtains, walling, upholstery and accessories. Washable at 30°C. Price £105.00 per meter. Lelievre founded in Paris in 1914 specialises in creating exclusive fine furnishing fabrics, accessories and designer collections. Fusion ResidentiAl

And the tiReless puRsuit oF peRFection

A

ntoine Christoforou, the charismatic Managing Director of Fusion Residential, is a man burning the candle at both ends. Not because he is living the playboy lifestyle enjoyed by many of his high-end clientele, but because, as well as leading the team crafting exquisite homes throughout London and the Home Counties, his new daughter is keeping him up at night. At eight weeks little Myla-Sophia is the personification of Fusion Residential’s tireless pursuit of perfection. Antoine won’t be drawn on which gives him the most pleasure, gazing upon his new daughter or seeing one of his company’s amazing homes come to market, though the look in his eyes might just give you a clue. What with the birth, acquisitions and two iconic longterm projects coming to fruition, observers would be forgiven for imagining it’s been a Champagne year for the team at Fusion Residential. But the hard work continues unabated. Coming to market on August 27th is Palazzo; six, gated, concierge-serviced apartments, with underground parking and wall-to-wall luxury in Beech Hill, Hadley Wood. According to Antoine, Palazzo was inspired by the award-winning Murano House apartments in nearby Cockfosters Road, which earned the company honors in the UK Property Awards. Hot on the heels of Palazzo comes The Collection: six apartments setting a new standard of luxury in tree-lined Dollis Avenue, Finchley. Both developments, Antoine says, draw heavily on the heritage of Fusion Residential but the blueprint has been enhanced, fine-tuned and the bar raised in terms of ultra-high specification, finish and the team’s trademark attention to detail. That starts with the careful selection of location. As

Antoine explains: “Beech Hill is simply the most coveted street in Hadley Wood and probably the most coveted address in the whole of Hertfordshire. “There is nothing else quite like Palazzo in Beech Hill in terms of style, sophistication and luxury. “While Dollis Avenue is among north London’s most sought-after addresses.” These homes are simply the best amongst the best, Antoine contends with absolute confidence. Antoine has been at Fusion Residential since its inception more than a decade ago and under his astute guidance he aims to ensure the company keeps doing what it is famed for, pushing the limits in terms of location, finish and specification in luxury home building. The former Merchant Taylor’s and University College London student oversees acquisitions using his extensive contact base and local knowledge to secure the perfect sites. Three new sites have been identified. Planning permission has been secured for six stylish apartments in Ealing and two projects are under starter’s orders in Radlett. Work will begin soon on the creation of seven apartments in Watford Road and in Loom Lane they will be spinning their magic on the ultimate trophy home comprising seven double bedrooms, swimming pool, leisure studio with gym and cinema room over four floors. Antoine explains there is a window of opportunity for a purchaser to acquire this property now and to engage Fusion Residential to design this special home bespoke to their individual needs and lifestyle. One of Antoine’s main interests, besides family and work, is motor racing and, yes, just to keep the Champagne theme flowing, he was at Silverstone to see Lewis Hamilton take the chequered flag at the British Grand Prix in July. It looks like wins all round for Antoine and the Fusion Residential team.

FANS

A

Henley ceiling fan is a simple and effective way to provide cooling while drawing in and circulating fresh air to a room. They are stylish, reliable and silent. They are also environmentally friendly and economical. The movement of the air over the skin produces a typical wind chill factor of 5ºC. They are a much cheaper and healthier alternative to air conditioning as they don’t dry the air or throat. A typical ceiling fan uses less electricity than a 60W bulb with the latest DC ones using an amazingly low 3w. Henley fans are wobble-free, quiet and are the only ones on the market to come with a Lifetime Warranty. As a bonus in the winter they can reduce heating bills by operating in reverse. This mode brings down the hot air trapped under the ceiling and can reduce energy costs by up to 24%. The Henley Fan Company created its first ceiling fan in 1886 and is now the largest manufacturer of ceiling fans in the world. It has led the market with a reputation for outstanding innovation and quality. It is recognised as a top brand worldwide. Apart from providing an important visual style impact for a room, there is nothing quite as calming and refreshing on a hot day as a quietly rotating ceiling fan creating a gentle natural breeze. They can be used not just in conservatories but lounges, kitchens, dining areas and especially bedrooms since they are much quieter than tower fans or air conditioning. The company supplies a wide range of over 45 models in 9 finishes that are unique and stylish making them perfect for any room. There are many stylish models from the five-blade traditional ceiling fan to a more contemporary and ultra-modern three blade fan. There is something for every room type and style. HOUSE & GARDEN

A

TIMELESS ELEGANCE OF SASH WINDOWS

sash window or hung sash window is made of one or more movable panels or “sashes” that form a frame to hold panes of glass, which are often separated from other panes (or “lights”) by narrow muntins. Although any window with this style of glazing is technically “a sash”, the term is used almost exclusively to refer to windows where the glazed panels are opened by sliding vertically, or horizontally in a style known as a “Yorkshire light”, sliding sash, or sash and case (so called because the weights are concealed in a box case). The oldest surviving examples of sash windows were installed in England in the 1670s, for example at Ham House. The invention of the sash window is sometimes credited, without conclusive evidence, to Robert Hooke. The sash window is often found in Georgian and Victorian houses, and the classic arrangement has three panes across by two up on each of two sashes, giving a “six over six” panel window, although this is by no means a fixed rule. Innumerable late Victorian and Edwardian suburban houses were built in England using standard sash window units approximately 4 feet (1.2 m) in width, but older, hand-made units could be of any size. To facilitate operation, the weight of the glazed panel is usually balanced by a heavy steel, lead, or cast iron sash weight or counter-weight concealed within the window frame. The sash weight is connected to the window by a sash cord or chain that runs over a pulley at the top of the frame, although spring balances are sometimes used. Sash windows may be fitted with simplex hinges, which allow the window to be locked into hinges on one side while the counterbalance on the other side is detached, allowing the 90 AUGUST2015

window to be opened for escape or cleaning. The name “hung sash window” is more usual in the United States, and typically refers to a double-hung window with two sashes that can move up and down in the window frame. A single hung window has two sashes but normally the top sash is fixed and only the bottom sash slides. Triple and quadruple hung windows are used for tall openings, common in New England churches. Construction is usually of softwood, and these sashes were traditionally only single-glazed. Modern double-glazed sash windows are now available, which increase energy efficiency and reduce sound ingress whilst keeping the traditional look of a period property. Traditionally styled double-glazed sash windows will often attempt to mimic the original appearance through the use of non-functional muntins or ‘glazing bars’, which are applied to the surface of the glazing, and give the appearance that the sash is made up of several smaller panes, whereas in reality, each sash consists of only one, large, double glazed unit. Sash windows are relatively low maintenance and offer huge advantages in return (style, aesthetics, abides by laws (relating to older houses and buildings), natural resources etc.), however well-maintained sash windows should last generations without needing parts replaced. It is also possible to clean all the glass from within the building by sliding the two panes to different positions. A significant advantage of sash windows is that they provide efficient cooling of interiors during warm weather. Opening both the top and bottom of a sash window by equal amounts allows warm air at the top of the room to escape, thus drawing relatively cool air from outside into the room through the bottom opening.

Extending your home Forget moving - make the most of what you have by extending your house up, out or down.

A

n extension can radically improve a property. Bigger, better space and extra rooms can add value, and make a house more attractive to buyers. If you are making structural changes with the purpose of adding value, you should first find out the current market price of your property, as well as its potential value once the changes have been made. Otherwise, your hard work and cash may not reap rewards. Also be area aware - before you plan that extravagant extension or costly conversion, it’s crucial to talk to a local estate agent to find out what renovations are popular in your area. Every street has a ceiling value so don’t over develop if you want to see a good return on your investment. Additionally, think about less radical changes that can be made - partitioning walls can be knocked down or put up, and bigger windows can make a house appear more spacious. However, in order to really boost what you have, an extension may be the best option. Rising property prices with a premium being put on space can make extensions a wise investment. HOWEVER,THIS IS A MAJOR PROJECT AND SHOULDN’T BE UNDERTAKEN LIGHTLY: Call in professionals to get the job done properly, as there are important planning restrictions and regulations which need to be followed.

98 AUGUST2015

sk friends if they can recommend an architect and A builders. It is really important that you locate the best people, as a botched extension can devalue a property. The National Federation of Builders (NFB) can provide you with a list of registered builders in your area. A builder that belongs to a respected trade organisation will have to comply with membership standards. The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) provides a list of registered architects. Although a modern extension can look good on an old house, when it comes to selling on it is important to appeal to the average buyer’s taste. Therefore it is more advisable for an extension to match the architectural style of the existing house. Be strategic: Extra bathrooms and large kitchens are usually good investments in family-sized homes, and a garage in a busy, urban area will also add value. The room that usually benefits the most from enlarging is the kitchen. Adding a kitchen/diner creates the farmhouse kitchen most people want and provides extra space. The old dining room can become an office, playroom, or an extra sitting room. Kitchen extensions also provide the opportunity to extend upwards - an additional bedroom can be built on top at the same time.

your guide to

Basement Conversions With soaring house prices and space at a premium, basement conversions are a simple solution for families who don’t want to have to compromise or relocate.‘Digdowns’ can be a fantastic way of generating extra space and transforming your home, but where to start?

T

he prospect of converting any part of your home can be daunting, so we’ve asked London’s basement conversion specialist, Simply Basement (www.simplybasement.co.uk) to answer your questions...

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY HOME IS SUITABLE FOR A BASEMENT CONVERSION AND WHAT DO I NEED? Most people don’t realise that you don’t need an existing cellar or basement space to be able to create your basement conversion. In most cases you will require planning permission, unless you are converting an existing residential basement, where the outside of the property is visibly not altered. You will require a party wall agreement, which is essentially a notification and agreement between you and your neighbour on what needs to happen if there is a problem. WHAT CAN I USE THE SPACE FOR? Subterranean kitchens and playrooms are popular, but it really depends upon your requirements. We’ve created everything from bedrooms and selfcontained flats to cinemas and swimming pools.

HOW LONG DOES A BASEMENT CONVERSION TAKE? The duration of a basement conversion can vary dramatically depending on the size and scope of the work. On average it can take anywhere from a couple of months through to a year for more complex projects. WHAT IS THE AVERAGE COST OF A BASEMENT CONVERSION? It depends upon the size and design of your conversion but assuming you opt for an average roof height of around 2.6m, for the structural dig and damp proofing, the average cost per sq metre is £2000.00 + VAT.

WIN!

PRIZE WORTH OVER £5,000!

DO I NEED TO MOVE OUT DURING CONSTRUCTION OF THE BASEMENT? In most cases, you are able to remain at your property whilst the conversion is taking place. Some people however prefer to rent on a short-term basis whilst the heavy work is being carried out.

Simply Basement is offering a fantastic opportunity to win your architect’s drawings, with no obligation to build, worth over £5,000.

Traditional beauty at its best

T

he statutory definition of a conservation area is an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which is desirable to preserve or enhance. The City of London has 26 conservation areas and living in one of these has the obvious advantage of knowing that the pleasant area you have chosen to make your home will stay that way. However, there is of course the disadvantage of the restrictions and special planning controls this imposes on what you can and can’t do to your property. The various Councils in these specially designated areas have a legal obligation to protect these buildings against alterations which can harm their historic character and the contribution they make to the overall character and appearance of their streets and surrounding areas. In dealing with planning applications for all types of developments affecting Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas, Local Councils apply their relevant planning and design policies. Railings, gates and external staircases into basements or lightwells are some of the most important elements of London’s historic architecture and townscape. Together with other traditional equipment, such as rainwater goods and door furniture, they introduce metal, as a material, its technology and its ornamental character to the composition of buildings and the street scene. Boundary railings act as one of the most important traditional elements between the buildings and the pedestrians, and emphasise principles of composition, such as symmetry, hierarchy and uniformity in the design of terraces and the appearance of streets and whole areas. Also, they underline the element of continuity which often characterises whole streets and areas of the same period, style, historic development or original ownership. In order to safeguard this important contribution of railings and original looking external staircases to the environment, the local Councils require that all new and replacement gates, railings

and staircases are designed appropriately, in order to preserve, complement or enhance the historic character of the area. The majority of railings and external staircases in London were removed during the Second World War and relatively few have been properly replaced. Significant time and investment is made by local councils to ensure these are reinstated to the original design and construction, by working closely with architects, developers and property owners, who are interested in replacing, reinstating or repairing traditional railings on historic properties. Given the strict nature of these rules and regulations surrounding gates, railings and external staircases, British Spirals & Castings have created specific patterns to replicate the original castings where existing patterns are no longer available, and have the ability to remove original pieces from existing railings to cast exact replicators ensuring continuity and compliance within the strict guidelines. Having completed work in nearly all the different conservation areas in London and given our understanding of the sensitive nature and the challenges that you can face during the planning process, British Spirals & Castings have the experience and product knowledge to be able to support you through the process and assist in replace boundary railings and external staircases within the guidelines and allowances of the local planning council’s approval. Why not come and visit the London showroom in Highgate to see for yourself what options are available for your project. Every time you open a bottle of champagne,

it’s a celebration... The very sight of a champagne flute, even an empty one, lifts the heart in anticipation. But why that beautiful but tiresome-to-wash-up shape?

A

s long ago as the late 17th century we were enjoying champagne but it threw a heavy sediment and the only way to drink it was in a long thin glass. In such a vessel the sediment sank to the bottom, you sipped off the top inch or so, threw the sediment away, rinsed the glass and started again. The trouble was that the only fine glassware we had came from the continent and this proved to be too delicate for the rumbustious English. Fortunately in the 1670’s George Ravenscroft applied for a patent for his ‘glass of lead’ which contained a proportion of lead oxide. He found that this created a material that was stronger and more durable than that from the continent. This happy development allowed us to revel in the joys of champagne from flutes long after the wine makers had eliminated the heavy sediment. Until indeed the beginning of the 19th century when the ‘coup’ or saucer shape glass became universally popular. There are various stories as to why this happened, but my own favourite puts the blame firmly on George Prince of Wales when as Prince Regent he was hosting a large dinner party in his beloved Pavillion at Brighton. A dessert was served in the traditional 104 AUGUST2015

saucer shaped, short stem bowl. The Prince didn’t like the pudding and slung it over his shoulder, demanding that champagne be put into his bowl to refresh his palate. Protocol meant that the entire company had to follow suit and I love to think of the scene with forty or so guests all throwing their puddings over their shoulder and requesting champagne. But for whatever reason, we drank champagne out of saucers until the early years after the Second World War when gradually we returned to the good old flute. My first glass of champagne was in a dimpled half-pint mug. I wonder what the Prince would have thought of that. Tilly Airers are dedicated to achieving the impossible. That impossibility? Making clothes airing fun! With their range of unique and design conscious airers, they have done just that.

B

ored with the range of ordinary airers on the market, with their unattractive, plastic white, dull designs, Tilly were intent on crafting an innovation for the Airers Industry. The result is Tilly Cat, Tilly Dog, Tilly Fish and Tilly Butterfly. Each is a stylish, colourful and practical airer, ready to make its home in any property. Tilly Airers are proudly made in the UK. Each product is constructed of the same, high quality, sturdy and assured 6mm steel wiring, with a powdered waterproof coating. Every airer incorporates a patented Tilly ‘ball bearing’ in the design, assuring you that your airer is, indeed, a Tilly original. Tilly Airers are the brainchild of Lindsey Russel. A combination of her dissatisfaction with the unsightly appearance of her existing airers and her original creativity, Tilly are Lindsey’s personalised mark upon the Airers Industry. Tilly Airers were born out of the need for something attractive to fit in a bespoke house. After searching the existing market, it became apparent that no pre-existing product would suffice. Thus, she turned to her own imagination, sparking the beginnings of the idea that would become Tilly Airers. Lindsey’s first design was that of the Tilly Cat, a colourful, feline influenced mesh of wire frame that was in keeping with the dynamic of the rest of her home. Family and friends were charmed by the charismatic airer and all wanted one for their own properties. This motivated Lindsey to expand her designs, increasing the Tilly Airers family to incorporate the Tilly Dog, Tilly Fish and Tilly Butterfly. Each respective Tilly Airer was designed for implementation into a range of public and privately owned properties and rooms; schools,

doctor’s surgeries and conservatories, alike. Lindsey is assured that even if not every household is in need, already possessing of a preexisting, commonplace airer, they will yearn for the refreshing design of a Tilly Airer. Fish Airer - The Tilly Fish is the smallest of the Tilly range. The maritime look offered by its blue colouring, and it’s simple yet effective design, ensures that it will fit perfectly into any bathroom or wet room. Dog Airer - Man’s new best friend, the Tilly Dog, is an airer with a minimalist, canine design. The Tilly Dogs’ black colouring further streamlines its appearance and will look great in any room or property. Cat Airer - The Tilly Cat is ‘pawsitively purrfect’, a horizontal steelwired, feline design frame. The green colouring assures an injection of colour into any room, whilst the cats’ whiskers allow for the hanging of even more items. Butterfly Airer - The Tilly Butterfly possesses a large wingspan for hanging items from. It would be at its utmost effective in a garden setting The Tilly Airers are unlike any traditional airers. They are not an appliance to be hidden away. Instead, they are a portable piece of furniture that adds a dash of visual charm to any room! CINEMATIC HEAVEN T

beneath your home

he best way to enjoy a feature film is in a cinema, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave the house. Having a dedicated cinema room is the ideal scenario for many movie fans, whilst increasing the value and demand of your property, and of course major status and assets for you, the homeowner. How you go about achieving this depends on the space you have available, and how much you are willing to invest. If you are really serious about getting a home cinema, it can be a good idea to seek out a specialist company. Acoustics, surround sound systems, matching the screen’s size to the size of the room, home cinema seating and lighting are all areas that need specific attention. Here is our guide to creating your own home cinema.

ROOM CHOICE Ideally you want your home cinema installation to be in a room that is isolated from the rest of the activity in the house. Soundproofing is important of course, and it can also help to choose a room that does not need to be used for any other purpose, and is not a throughway to somewhere else. For these reasons a house extension, loft or basement conversion can be the perfect home cinema choice. TYPE OF SCREEN Your screen size needs to be in proportion with the size of the room. This is very important, as many people make the mistake of simply going for the largest screen available on the assumption that this alone will provide the perfect cinema look and feel. Most people choose not to sit on the front row at the cinema; because it can be uncomfortable looking at too large a screen for a long time. There is also an optimum distance between a projected image and the human eye for those grainy pixels to not be visible. For the real cinema experience, a flat screen with a projector is unbeatable. Most dedicated film fans agree that plasma TVs provide a more cinematic viewing experience than LCD, which is backlit and so performs better in rooms that have plenty of natural light. HOME CINEMA SYSTEMS The potential and sophistication of home entertainment systems

20 2 AUGUST2015 11

is almost limitless. Whether you are looking for a HD projector or a wireless home cinema that also includes a centralised hi-fi system, this is an area that is worth investigating in detail, particularly if you have the funds to really go to town. The Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association is an ideal first port of call for information and advice. Their membership includes thousands of installers and designers of home entertainment systems, who can advise you on the best options for your requirements. SURROUND SOUND SPEAKERS When it comes to home entertainment, the image isn’t everything; sound plays just as much an important role. Subwoofers, sound bars and speakers arranged perfectly so as to get the very best from the room’s acoustics are all part of the audio element. Again, when it comes to acoustics, a professional’s advice can make all the difference. CINEMA ROOM SEATING If you really want the authentic cinema experience, then some rows of tiered movie seats is certainly one way to go. Add popcorn holders in the armrests and the look is complete. If you want something even more relaxing, however, there are plenty of options available. Luxury furniture that is both comfortable and stylish, with built-in storage, drinks holders and iPod speakers is perfectly tailored to suit the movie-watching experience. LIGHTING If your room is really going to have that authentic cinema ambience, it is essential that the lighting is right. Make sure the room you use has either no windows, or windows that can be completely blacked out, and think carefully about how much light the room will need. Dimmer switches, floor lights and sidelights are all part of the mix in creating that night at the movies. If you really want to make it as realistic as possible, you might also consider curtains that can be drawn back from the screen. Ideally, these and the lighting will be adjustable via remote control.

MORPH DESIGNS creating harmonious spaces filled with imagination and joy

ome may consider peacock feathers in the house to be unlucky, but the colourful plumage has proven to be a stunning addition to a recent project on Portobello Road. The feather print created a harmonious atmosphere in the house, adding vibrant colour. In history, myth, legend and lore, the peacock symbolises nobility, protection and joy – you couldn’t ask for more in your home! Samantha Morphew, head designer at established interior design studio Morph Designs explains that your home should be “a place filled with imagination, where you can express your feelings and enjoy your life”. Being an interior designer means that Samantha is able to source some of the best and most beautiful fabrics and soft furnishings from the designer world, she incorporates them into a scheme of your choice and then creates the home of your dreams! “The Portobello Road house”, explains Samantha, “was an exciting project, where the clients were very arty and the brief was to create a unique interior with luxurious touches”. The centrepiece of the sitting room was a stunning Matthew Williamson rug from The Rug Company which is adorned with a striking peacock feather pattern. The bright colours from the ‘eye’ of the feathers were complimented with neutral walls and colourful scatter cushions on a sofa.com designed sofa.

12 14 2 AUGUST2015

The sitting room wasn’t the only place that the peacock feathers were used, the master bedroom was dressed with bespoke hand-made curtains, made with a luxurious Voyage silk in duck egg blue. The curtains added a touch of chic elegance, and although peacock feathers are sometimes seen as superstitious, these clients were very lucky indeed. Samantha explains that “it’s all about the details”, which can be seen in the accessories that were sourced from a nearby boutique. “We were fortunate to have the famous Portobello Road antiques market and designer boutiques on the doorstep, but sourcing pieces to finish a room design is probably the most important and enjoyable part!” After more than a decade in the interior design world, Samantha and her team at Morph Designs pride themselves on their ability to deliver to a high standard whilst concluding the brief to white glove perfection – evidence of which can be seen in their extensive portfolio of work. KITCHENS the hub of the home

ou need to decide on the space that is required over and above your units, worktops, appliances and sink unit. For example, if you have children, is extra eating space required? Are you looking to entertain and relax aswell as prepare and cook the evening meal? Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. The interior style of the rest of your home could dictate the style of your kitchen space, especially if it is open-plan, so you need to take this into consideration.

The design of your kitchen can cover a variety of themes... CONTEMPORARY KITCHENS The sleek look will provide instant gratification. Providing a more open feeling adds to the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs.

colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points. CABINETS & WORKTOPS Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen, so always push your budget as far as possible. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective). Don’t neglect handles – they can make or break a kitchen. Chrome is effective and never dates. Avoid wooden worktops near sinks or you’ll become a slave to re-oiling, and glass worktops quickly look tired and scratched. Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the ubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For taps, the tri-flow system provides filtered water. You

On average, people spend in excess of £30,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space. There are a multitude of choices when it comes to creating your dream kitchen... FRENCH COUNTRY KITCHEN Combining rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. We are talking an Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. Freestanding features and copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger, rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware all combine to give you that French country feel. SHAKER STYLE KITCHEN This design appeals to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillowfronted doors and beautiful woods epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island can make an attractive addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in. RETRO KITCHEN A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic

could also mix and match your worktops – for example, quartz and stainless steel – or vary the depth of work surfaces. KITCHEN FLOORING The flooring in your kitchen space is as important as the kitchen itself, so you need to get it right. Take advice from a flooring expert, or consult your kitchen designer. You can find more information and choices on kitchen flooring later in this guide. KITCHEN LIGHTING Safety comes first in any kitchen, so for high activity areas where you’ll be preparing food you need plenty of illumination, so work out which areas you’ll be using for practical purposes and install task lighting – i.e., focused, directional, bright light. Think of lighting as a design tool to emphasise or detract from good or bad features in a room. You can find more information and choices on kitchen lighting later in this guide. A bespoke kitchen will be tailor made for both the space and you. For pure luxury, this is the best that money can buy. You can have it designed especially for your needs and tastes, and built by the best in the business.

The country-style look is bang on trend for kitchens this year so no matter where you live or what style your home is, you can create the ideal country kitchen. if you’re planning a whole kitchen revamp, or simply would like to introduce some personality to your space, check out these smart kitchen design ideas... For the archetypal country kitchen look, choose generously proportioned pieces made in solid timbers with distressed and painted finishes. Freestanding items, such as butcher’s blocks and wall-hung plate racks, are also key ingredients. If you’re lucky enough to have any original features in your kitchen make the most of them by turning them into a focal point. Modern country kitchens are relaxed and informal: the heart of the home. While fitted furniture uses every inch of space in a kitchen brilliantly, it does have the tendency to look a bit too sleek and uniform. Always choose kitchen cupboards made from wood and pay a little extra for classic-style fittings like cup handles and simple doorknobs for a more authentic look. Shaker kitchens are distinctive thanks to the ‘picture frame’-style design on cabinet doors, this type of kitchen is characteristically country. From beech wood for a light look, to walnut for a darker feel, wood kitchens are a great way to achieve a country look. Solid wood kitchens are expensive but

120 AUGUST2015

definitely worth the investment for that authenticity. A Kitchen island can be a great way to maximise on the space in your kitchen as it can not only house storage, appliances and fittings, but create a real luxurious feel. A range cooker will provide the wow factor for the ultimate country kitchen. A Belfast sink is a must, you don’t want a modern stainless steel sink that will ruin the overall effect. A stylish Welsh dresser would make an attractive addition to house your country style crockery. Kitchen flooring like real stone tiles, terracotta, travertine or slate will provide the country feel under your feet, with authentic wall tiles completing the style. Pastel colours work brilliantly in country style kitchens. As with duck egg blue, mint green rings a change from cream and white, but does not overpower the interior scheme. You don’t need to steer clear of overtly modern touches - a country kitchen can have all the mod cons and be evenly balanced by other features.

This technique is highly regarded for precisely controlling the flavour, texture, freshness and appearance of the food, which is why lots of top chefs use it. If you want to create flawless dishes at home, you can use V-ZUG’s Vacuisine technology to employ this sous-vide technique with complete ease. KITCHEN GUIDE

GOOD KITCHEN DESIGN...

Starts right under your feet

T

o put on a fantastic floor show, start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards. VINYL FLOORING Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most cost-effective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable suraface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through - those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner. STONE OR SLATE Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you. LAMINATE This is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic,

126 AUGUST2015

real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer. HARDWOOD A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again. CERAMIC TILES A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating.

Choosing your kitchen flooring is as crucial as choosing the overall theme for your kitchen, so consult a specialist designer for further advice.

ere at Cue & Co we design kitchens, lighting, furniture and interiors. All of these are represented in our fully working showroom home stretching over two floors of 6,000 sq ft in Parsons Green. Everything is made in-house in our adjacent workshop to meticulous standards by our highly skilled craftsmen where nothing is mass produced and everything is made to order. OUR DESIGNS These are created in such a way that through materials and colours they can be adapted allowing the final piece to be a true reflection of both our client and Cue & Co. This makes for a very unique and unusual collaboration where the clients engage with the piece in a way that is seldom achieved. It allows flexibility and a source of intrigue for us as prototype designs are morphed into something individual whilst retaining their original principles of proportion and character. Our commitment to the final finish is as important as the design itself. OUR KITCHENS Durability, longevity and practicality lie at the core of all of our kitchens making a solid frame for beauty and aesthetics. The process is complete from the initial concept fulfilling our client’s requirements through to the design, execution and completion. We believe that it is the sum of careful attention to detail, excellent craftsmanship and superior appliances that makes a Cue & Co kitchen unique and visionary. Our current ranges are The Bovingdon, The Ladbroke, The Campden, The Waldemar, The Aubrey and The Ebury. Our partners include Gaggenau, Sub Zero & Wolf and Perrin & Rowe. KITCHEN DESIGN PROCESS Our design team is here to help you realize your ideal kitchen and make the procedure as streamline and smooth as possible. The initial meeting with one of our designers should be booked approximately one to two weeks in advance with our office. This first meeting in

our showroom is free of charge.

WHAT TO BRING A short brief on you and your lifestyle and any mood images that can help the designer identify the style you are after. The more information that is brought to this initial meeting will help provide the designer with a comprehensive sense of what you wish to achieve. This includes scaled architectural plans, ceiling heights and any relevant photographs of the space. WHAT TO EXPECT During the first design consultation, the designer will discuss the project in detail with you covering everything from layout, to materials, finishes and colours, through to appliances, fixtures, fittings and brassware. All this important information is taken down and considered in order to produce the initial plans. KITCHEN DESIGN PLANS Soon after the initial appointment, you will receive a pack. This includes a covering letter pointing out any important considerations, mood board images of the kitchen range you have based your design on, a 2D sketch floor plan, one 3D perspective drawing of a section of your drawing and a quotation. FABRICATION AND INSTALLATION Once the drawings have been finalized accurate joinery drawings are then drawn up for the workshop and the fabrication process begins. Our installation team will then arrive on site to bring your kitchen to life! KITCHEN GUIDE

ON THE TILES Selecting the right wall & floor tile for your kitchen can be a real challenge.

T

he range of colours, designs, shapes and textures is simply vast. Get professional advice and guidance from a tiling specialist so you can purchase with total confidence the tiles that will add real style and value to your home. Here are a few hints and tips to think about when deciding on the tile that is right for you‌. The tile must complement, and not clash with, the existing flooring - unless of course you are changing the flooring too! So begin by looking at three aspects of your flooring: its colour, design/shape and texture. Look for wall tiles that complement these features. Clashes of colour design or texture can make the room look far too busy and can even strain the eyesight, especially if you choose brightly-coloured and different patterns and shapes for walls and floors. A simple working principle is this: if you have busilypatterned flooring, go for plainer wall tiles. When choosing a colour for your wall tiles, there used to be a principle that small rooms should have lighter colours, while larger rooms can cope with darker colours. Generally speaking, darker colours do absorb light. So, used to excess, darker colours can have the effect of appearing to reduce the size of the room. However there are some exceptionally attractive darker-coloured tiles available these days and, by mixing these darker shades with light colours, you can overcome this issue while at the same time adding some real eye-catching elegance and charm to your kitchen. On the other hand, if you want simplicity combined with brightness, then the lighter shades will

130 AUGUST2015

reflect more light giving an appearance of space, especially in smaller kitchens. Tiles are available with patterned or plain designs. Patterned tiles, those with individual patterns on their faces, can sometimes be arranged so as to create a larger design and this can be especially effective in a larger kitchen. However, you can also create your own colour designs by carefully selecting differentlycoloured tiles, perhaps to complement the colours of your existing flooring. Another option that can look dazzlingly attractive is to use a patterned or a differentlycoloured plain tile to create a border or edge to walls that are predominantly tiled in a plain colour. The choice of shapes now available is amazing, ranging from the classic square shape through mosaic, rectangular and random shapes. But again, take care to avoid clashes with any shapes on your existing flooring in the room. The range of finishes now available for tile faces is quite remarkable. From smooth and glossy polished marble, through the soft feel of limestone to the rougher texture of other types of real stone, the choice again is yours. But a note of caution: some tiles, like limestone, may be less water- or stainresistant: please check before making your final decision. So, whether you are seeking to create a kitchen in a modern, minimalist style or a traditional, elegant style, think about the size of the room itself, your style requirements, and how your choice of wall tiles should complement your existing flooring and vice-versa.

EXTEND YOUR KITCHEN

A

The kitchen is the heart of the home so extending it to create a big open plan space to relax with the family and wow your friends is a good call.

kitchen extension is one of the most popular home improvement projects and one that’ll really add to the enjoyment and value of your home. In this article we look at the practicalities of planning your kitchen extension.

FIRST THINGS FIRST You’ll be investing a lot of money in this project so ask yourself how you plan to use the space: Do you want a more flexible space for the family to enjoy? Do you want a space for entertaining? Do you want a separate utility room? Do you want to bring the outside in with doors opening on to the garden? As well as considering the here and now think about 5-10 years down the line and the changing dynamics of your family. While play space may be important now, in a few years’ time it’s homework and hangout space they’ll be after. OPTION 1: KNOCKING THROUGH Knocking down a stud partition wall between your kitchen and dining room is the simplest option. Get a structural engineer in to check that the wall isn’t load bearing. If it is you’ll need an RSJ (rolled steel joint) to take the strain. If your property is leasehold you’ll need permission from the freeholder. OPTION 2: EXTENDING OUT If you’ve got time, space and budget this is the perfect blank canvas for you to create your ultimate kitchen. With no pre-existing constraints to work around, you can decide exactly what goes where, from your granite island to the position of your sockets. Got your heart set on a contemporary glass ‘box’ that brings the outside in? OPTION 3:ADDING ON Another popular home improvement is installing a glazed or sky-lit roof over the galley side return on a Victorian terrace. Opening up the space makes it work that much harder and who doesn’t want a wider, lighter kitchen? HOW MUCH DOES AN KITCHEN EXTENSION COST? The Halifax Home Improvement Survey says the minimum cost of a kitchen extension is £20,000. Experts suggest that a kitchen extension can increase the value of your home by as much as 11% so if you’ve got space and budget, go for it. 132 AUGUST2015

GETTING PLANNING PERMISSION FOR A KITCHEN EXTENSION Good news: planning permission often isn’t necessary for small extensions. If you’re knocking through from kitchen to dining room it isn’t usually required. Neither is it necessary if you’re converting a garage, although if you’re enlarging your building’s footprint you’ll need to run it past your local planning officer. However if you live in a listed building, conservation area or area of outstanding natural beauty, you’ll need to ask your local authority for permission. Likewise if you’re planning a substantial kitchen extension you’ll need permission and full architectural drawings of the layout and elevations. Planning applications cost around £150 in England and take around eight weeks to process. It’s worth stating the obvious - all regardless of how big or small - must comply with Building Regulations. As a general rule it’s best to submit full plans to your local authority building control department to be on the safe side. THE PRACTICALITIES Bear in mind that moving water, gas and electrical points will add to the cost and complexity of the work. You’ll need a Corgi registered installer if you’re installing a gas boiler or cooker and all electrical work requires a compliance certificate under Part P of Building Regs. Another key consideration is drainage. Outlet pipes for sinks, dishwashers and washing machines need direct access to external drainage so these often dictate the layout of your kitchen extension. Remember if you start moving pipes you need to check that all work complies with Building Regulations. Consider the flow of natural light at different times of day as this will inform where you need artificial lighting. Some people choose to position their table where there’s most natural light, others prefer their main workspace to be naturally lit. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference. Light and airy conservatory style kitchens can get hot in summer, cold in winter and subsequently suffer from damp and condensation. You’ll need expert architect advice to find the right solution for your property. ONE FINAL THING While the extension is being carried out there will be times when your kitchen is unusable so if you have the space to create a makeshift ‘kitchen’ it’ll be a real stress-saver. It’s only short term, so consider moving to a friend or relative’s. Bear in mind that a kitchen extension is not a quick job. Depending on the scale you could be talking a couple of weeks or a couple of months. Just keep telling yourself, it’ll be worth it in the end!

ABBOTT’S FLOORING

Stylish Designs and Dedication

“I

have been using Abbotts for nearly 40 years, The first thing that hits me every time I visit, is that they are always updating their showroom to not only reflect their amazing range of flooring, carpeting, shutters and blinds, but also to illustrate the latest designs and trends on the market. The staff are incredibly experienced, knowledgeable and friendly, and most importantly - available to advise and guide me as to the most suitable range for my property. With Abbott’s being a traditional family business, you get that personal service and the same fitting team each time. This makes it all the more a pleasant experience. The addition of a blind, shutter and curtain department is a master stroke. It is run by another of the Abbott team so the family connection continues. Abbott’s is definitely worth a visit; allow at least 2 hours if not 3 as you enter a world of stylish flooring and carpet displays and the most impressive blind and shutter department I have seen. This is upstairs where you get the Amtico, Karndean engineered wood, laminate display areas, and the high quality and desirable materials for your curtains; it will take your breath away.

134 AUGUST2015

Recently, we decided to go retro and lo and behold Abbotts came to the rescue! There were some stunning William Morris designs to choose from, but wanting to go for a quirky retro feel; Tom in the showroom was able to present their range of superb fifties and sixties designs. They really can cater for all your tastes whether traditional or modern. We chose a modern take on an old theme by using an Alternative Flooring Quirky design that looked amazing, it could not have worked out better. “For high-quality and a dedicated and experienced team that go that extra mile for you to achieve your dream interior, definitely head to Abbott’s.” MRS A MASON-PHILLIPS.
