The 2012 Xchanging Boat Race Possibly the most dramatic Boat Race ever
O
ne hundred years after both crews sank; this was set to be an even more dramatic University Boat Race. In the weeks preceding The 158th Boat Race in the series, and the last to be sponsored by Xchanging, it had been Oxford who had shown the most impressive form, defeating an under 23 German crew, Leander very convincingly and Molesey Boat Club. Cambridge on the other hand didn’t look so impressive against either Leander or Molesey and despite having 7.9Kg per man weight advantage went into the Race as underdogs. Neither crew could boast a host of returning Blues, only the two Presidents; Dave Nelson bow in the Light Blue Boat and Karl Hudspith, 5 for Oxford. Cambridge’s Mike Thorp also raced in 2011, vowing to grow his hair until his defeat was avenged. Coaches Steve Trapmore, in only his second race at Cambridge, and Sean Bowden in his 14th for Oxford, both worked with international line-ups but it was Bowden who had looked and sounded more confident in the build-up to the Race. In the toss for stations it was Cambridge picking tails who

sport chose the Surrey station, hoping to take advantage of the long bend midway through the Race. This entire preamble counts for nothing though in this, perhaps the most dramatic of all Boat Races. Off the start it was Oxford who looked slicker at 44 strokes a minutes, slightly over-rating Cambridge and taking an early ¼ length lead. They couldn’t break an indomitable Cambridge crew however, who had won the toss and chosen the Surrey station. By the Mile Post which was reached in a fast time of
22 april 2 0 1 2
3 minutes 42 seconds, the dark blues still only had the narrowest of leads and as the two crews settled into their racing rhythms and with continual warnings from the umpires launch to “move apart” there was no advantage to either. And this was how the race proceeded with neither crew giving any quarter, Oxford holding on around the outside of the Surrey bend but unable to move away from the light blues as they raced under Hammersmith Bridge and on towards Chiswick Eyot. With the wind now
behind them and both crews showing great heart and determination it was shaping up to be a truly fantastic race. And then suddenly with Oxford primed to put in a push on the outside of the bend turning into the Crossing, Oxford cox Zoe De Toledo shot her hand in the air to be followed quickly by John Garrett the Umpire waving his red flag stopping the race. Amid some confusion on the river, a swimmer who would have been mown down by the flotilla of following boats if the race had continued, was spotted between the two crews. Later Garrett explained how his assistant umpire Sir Matthew Pinsent had spotted the swimmer and that there was absolutely no choice but to stop the Race. After 20 minutes Garrett (who had disqualified Isis in 1990) got the Race restarted, but it was cold and uncomfortable for the crews, needing to maintain their composure in very bouncy water while boats swarmed around them. Nothing like this had happened in the history of The Boat Race, but the drama was to continue after the restart. With a free start towards the bottom of Chiswick Eyot Oxford were off sharply again slipping out to a ¼ length lead in the first few strokes. Then, just 35 seconds into the restarted race, Oxford on the outside of the bend were continuously warned to move away from Cambridge. This they failed to do and a clash was inevitable. A clash in which the Dark Blues came out the worst, and which cost them the race as Hanno Weinhausen six in the Oxford crew emerged from it with no spoon on the end of his blade. Effectively the Race was over and Cambridge moved steadily away from the 7 man Oxford crew over the next few minutes to win by 4 and a quarter lengths, times to be confirmed. Despite the Oxford crew’s appeal at the end of the Race
Umpire Garrett declared Cambridge the winner. But the drama wasn’t quite over Alex Woods Oxford’s bow man had collapsed after crossing the finish line and was lying unconscious in the boat, having given everything to prevent his team’s loss. Cambridge President David Nelson seemed bemused, and described the Race in his laconic fashion as “pretty dramatic” while expressing his concern for his Dark Blue rival. Race Umpire John Garrett explained his decision to allow the race to continue after the clash, “Crews have to abide by their accidents. I was warning Oxford at the time of the clash,
as they were off station. I was comfortable Cambridge were in the right place on the river, so it was right and within the rules to allow the Race to continue.” After the Race there was no presentation ceremony as both sides showed their concern for Woods who was taken to Charing Cross hospital immediately afterwards, where he was recovering well a short time later. This was a truly dramatic afternoon of sport, one in which the Umpire was adjudged to have made all the correct decisions in an unprecedented race, and in which many people probably didn’t notice that Ed Bosson
had become the youngest ever winning Cambridge cox. In the reserves race earlier in the day Isis (Oxford) beat Goldie (Cambridge) by 5 lengths, setting a new record for this event with a time of 16 minutes 41 seconds. Zoe De Toledo (OUBC Cox) said in an official statement: “Firstly, I’d like to say how proud I am of the eight true gentlemen who I had the pleasure to cox in The Boat Race yesterday. Seeing how the guys attacked the Race in the last 5 minutes was simultaneously one of the worst, but also one of the proudest moments of my life. Ultimately it is just a tragedy
that neither crew had the opportunity to display its best ability over the full course from Putney to Mortlake. We are devastated that we did not get the chance to find out what we were capable of achieving in the second half of the Race, and many of us will never have that opportunity again. It is our sincerest hope that every future Boat Race crew, from both Oxford and Cambridge, is afforded the chance to fairly test themselves over the full 4 and a quarter miles that make The Boat Race such a unique event. We are all extremely proud of The Boat Race as an event and a tradition, and accept that
bizarre events like those that occurred yesterday do happen. That’s sport. Whilst I believe I will remember yesterday’s remarkable events for all the wrong reasons, I would not trade the friendships I have built with my crewmates for anything. Yesterday I truly learnt what it was to be part of a team. A team that rallies around you and shelters you from the storm when you are at your lowest. Lastly I want to finish by saying how proud I am of my teammates in the Isis crew, who not only set the record for the Reserve Boat Race, but also recorded the third fastest time in the history of the Race.” april2012

N A R CI S S Notting Hill based ‘Narciss’ wins designer of the year for second year running
L
uxury ready to wear label Narciss has just won Designer of the Year at the Latvian Style and Fashion Awards for the second consecutive year. Chosen by TellusFashion, the exclusive fashion concierge, it is the second year in a row that the designer Alise Trautmane has won the much coveted title at the awards, which is judged by top photographers, magazine editors and bloggers. Alise says, “It’s amazing to get this very reputable award ‘Designer of the Year’. It’s a great honour… thank you!” Alise originally pursued a successful career in the corporate world. The launch of Narciss was rather unexpected as many never thought that Alise would be associated with catwalk shows, beautiful dresses and glamorous accessories. Though her unconditional

love for beauty, fashion and design saw her quit the corporate world and embark on a very different career path, attending courses at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design and Instituto Europeo di Design. She now produces chic dresses that are designed to make women fall in love with themselves and embrace their sensuality. It has been an exciting time for the label, who exhibited their Spring Summer 12 collection at Riga Fashion Week last September and more recently their Autumn Winter 12 collection at the MercedesBenz Berlin Fashion Week. In January, Narciss was named by WWB as a ‘label to watch’ and has had a presence on the red carpet recently with a number of high profile names wearing her designs to movie premieres. Combining femininity with a modern edge, the new

Narciss Spring/Summer collection includes a wide range of flattering shapes such as midi skirts, straight-leg trousers and cropped jackets; and luxe materials including lace, viscose and silk. Surprisingly, Alise takes her inspiration from her Aunt Zize who enjoyed a long and beautiful life with a wardrobe to match. The collection combines a slightly nostalgic mood, looking back to the silhouettes of the 1950’s and 1960’s merged with some of this season’s most captivating trends. Chic dresses are prominent in the collection, both in the soft pastel hues of blue, pink and peach as well as statement block colour such as orange and the key trend of monochrome. The Narciss flagship boutique is located in the heart of Notting Hill on Westbourne Grove. The key focus of the Narciss collection is on the cut, the quality fabrics and stylish femininity. Infinite attention goes into ensuring each piece is tailored to perfection and with interesting detailing. For the stylish urban lady, her designs hit the perfect note between glamour and practicality, making them the go-to designer for outfits that will take them from day cool to evening sophistication. Using only the finest natural fabrics and manufactured with precision tailoring, the Narciss collection symbolises sophistication and combines femininity with a modern edge. Dresses are the primary focus of each collection, from fabulous evening gowns to beautiful dresses fit to take you from day to night. Each garment is designed to be a unique investment piece, with a nod to the ‘trend du jour’ yet made to blend in effortlessly with your existing wardrobe. Why not go see for yourself…

Mayfair’s Hidden Gem T
hese days, an evening out in Central London can be a daunting experience. The vast array of options available, whilst welcomed as a selling point of our Capital’s entertainment offering, can be overwhelming to say the least. Often a simple gathering of close friends can conjure up more questions than it does answers – Bar? Wine Bar? Pub? Gastro Pub? Nightclub? Lounge Bar? Restaurant? Regardless of your expectations, we all tend to use convenience, atmosphere, quality and location as driving factors in our decision-making. Whether our goal is just the one, quick post-work tipple, or an entire evening of painting the town red, we long for a venue that reflects our mood and ideally, will accommodate us as the night continues. The lengthy queues at one venue might be traded off against the liveliness of another. One establishment might offer us a greater selection of wine, but the other is open slightly later. These decisions might not be necessary next time you find yourself in Mayfair… Tucked away down a neatly cobbled courtyard, just behind New Bond Street, stands ‘Mews of Mayfair’ - a four-story venue founded by London entrepreneur James Robson in 2006. The converted Mews houses date back to the 18th century and boast a smart and lively main cocktail bar complete with heated outdoor terrace, downstairs lounge bar, first floor restaurant, private dining room, on-site wine & cigar café
and private art exhibition space. In other words, everything you could possibly desire from an evening out in one location. Upon arrival, the sheer size of Mews of Mayfair quickly becomes apparent. The building encompasses a central courtyard, which is flanked on either side by both the main Mews building and its private spaces. The venue is busy, but not over-subscribed. It is vibrant and lively, but not raucous. It has the unmistakable aura of a private members club, but without a drop of pretension in sight. The clientele is as varied as the venue itself. As we arrive, we pass a group of men conducting an informal business meeting, two older gentlemen enjoying a cigar, a pair of well-dressed young women enjoying a wellearned post-work drink, and a young couple sampling the cocktails on offer at the bar. This, we would discover, is not only a testament to the diversity of clientele, but an indication of april 2 0 1 2

the atmosphere that the owners and staff promote from within. The main ground floor cocktail bar is a perfect starting point to any evening. The bar itself is impressive in size, with an abundance of comfortable seating. Specific tables and seating area’s can be booked in advance, with plenty of room left over after for people who arrive late. The bar service area is wide and accommodating, ensuring a minimal waiting time for a drink, and the staff are friendly and eager to accommodate. Table service is available, as well as a fine selection of beers, wines, champagne’s, whisky’s and cocktails to choose from. The cocktail list offers an impressive selection of specialist cocktails - the ‘Lychee and ginger Caipiroska’ and ‘Mews Berry’ are especially sublime. The open spaces, well-planned seating and abundance of staff ensure that service is never lacking, even when the venue is at its busiest around 10pm. The heated outdoor terrace provides a refreshing alternative to sitting inside, whether you are a smoker or not. As enticing as it is to continue on at the cocktail bar, we head on to have dinner. After a short walk through the building and up the stairs we arrive at the restaurant. The lively sounds of the bar vanish with the closing of the door behind us and we hand our coats and bags to the charming assistant as we are led to our seats. The restaurant is stunning, beautifully decorated in traditional cream and white. The tables are laid out elegantly and in keeping 36 a p r i l 2 0 1 2
with the luxurious feel of the rest of the venue. The atmosphere is far more relaxed up here, the staff are equally as hard working but there is a laid-back vibe that suits the dining experience perfectly. Whatever your preference, the menu offers everything from Seabream and Tiger Prawns to a Fillet of Beef, Pork Belly, a beautiful Nicoise salad and a delicate Gnocchi with Mushroom and tender stem broccoli for vegetarians. Again, the service is superb and after choosing our wine (A decision that takes quite a while with the selection on offer!) we are poured a glass and immediately given a basket of perfectly-baked bread. The food itself is well-cooked, clean, simple and delicious. The wine list and the knowledge of the waiters ensure each aspect of the meal is perfectly complimented. The venue, standing alone as a restaurant, would easily hold its own against some of the finest establishments in Mayfair. If you desire a more intimate dining experience, it’s worth visiting the ‘Chef ’s Dining Room’ based on the top floor. Accommodating seated parties of up to 28, this stunning private room offers unparalleled luxury. Decorated wall to wall in beautiful antique maps, original beams, fine leather seating, and prime views of the kitchen. The room can also double up as a meeting room or event space, with surround sound, wireless Internet, and a hidden 50” screen. This is a fantastic space,

perfect for a business lunch, private function or special occasion. As we returned to the ground floor we took a quick tour of ‘La Cave’ - another private dining area for guests and boutique bespoke wine retailer just opposite the main bar. They stock some of the most exquisite wine, champagne, whisky and cigars, in an ornate couch area decorated with beautiful dark wood and leather. Directly opposite La Cave, is the ‘Mews Art Gallery’, which we are told, acts as an ideal event space for canapé parties and features pieces from some of London’s top upcoming artists. As the clock approaches midnight, we head downstairs to ‘The Lounge’ to continue the evening. The lounge is located in the basement of Mews and is open until 1am, with a live DJ and cocktail bar with plenty of comfy seating and private alcoves to retire to. The same fantastic selection of cocktails is available as well as vintage champagne and fine wines. As our night draws to a close, there are plenty of happy faces around. Almost everyone we saw earlier in the evening is still there – proving that Mews really does have something for everyone. Mews of Mayfair is an ambitious venue, but its ambition is matched all the way by a fantastic layout, great staff, delicious food and a warm ambience. Whatever it is you are looking for from your well-deserved downtime; chances are you will find it at Mews of Mayfair. See it for yourself…
This month we are offering readers of Life Magazine, the opportunity to win a dinner for two at Mews of Mayfair. Dinner includes 3 courses and a bottle of house wine. foodies Famous Michelinstarred and TV chefs are warming up their pots and pans as they prepare to set tastebuds tingling at Foodies Festivals this summer. Kitchen superstars, such as Ed Baines, Cyrus Todiwala, Levi Roots, Martin Blunos, Matt Gillan, Michael Bremner and Emma Forbes, will cook signature dishes live in the Chef ’s Theatre at Brighton and Hampton Court and explain to fans how they can prepare the same dishes at home. Cyrus, who is taking his mobile kitchen to Foodies Hampton Court, said: “We’re tremendously excited about our new Cafe Spice Namaste Mobile because it’s so state of the art, it’s practically a restaurant on wheels. It certainly has the facility to turn into one. “We’ll be able to prepare on the premises some of the interesting food from all over India that Cafe Spice Namaste 42 a p r i l 2 0 1 2

Just the look of the Cafe Spice Namaste Mobile, we hope, will be very reassuring to people who love and seek out good food.” Sue Hitchen, the director of Foodies, said: “This year, we’ve expanded our creative edge with lots of new event features like the city beach and the cinema. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing the cabaret and burlesque in the VIP Lounge, because the performers are of such high quality and the acts they have planned are such good fun.” The ultra-luxurious VIP Lounge – which, for the first time, is open to the public - will play host to the best of British cabaret, including the much-talked-about saucy burlesque food fight. outside: one for kids and one for adults, both of which are for charity. At the children’s one, the over-sevens can get kitted out in special coveralls before throwing custard pies and gooey cakes at each other in a soft play area. Parents can also take their little ones to the city beach to let them make sandcastles while they kick back in the sun. Staff serving from traditional brightly painted beach huts will bring ice cream, tea - or something a bit stronger - straight to mums and dads’ deckchairs. On the other side of the site, film fans can enjoy a unique culinary experience all of their own at the Food of Love Cinema, which will show the best food films of all time and serve the meals shown in those movies during the screenings. Blockbusters such as Moonstruck (pizza) and Goodfellas (pasta) will be shown alongside independent movies such as Tampopo (sushi) at the pop-up movie house so audience members can taste what the stars taste. Director Hannah Robinson - who curated the programme for the Food of Love - said: “For me, movies and cooking are both hugely creative and a way of exploring other cultures. I have always wanted to go to Vietnam, but until I do, I can get a flavour of the culture by eating Vietnamese food & watching The Scent of Green Papaya.”

Welcome... The independent school system in the UK is one of the finest in the world and you are fortunate to have some of the best schools in the country right on your doorstep. In today’s economic climate, making the right choice for your child’s education is of paramount importance. Sometimes every parent needs a helping hand in deciding what is best for their children. Our Education Life series is an invaluable resource for any parent considering private education. Many schools will be holding further open days during 2012. Encourage your children to come with you and get their feedback after each visit. Take a notebook with you and write down positive or negative things that your child brings up. This will be a useful tool when you are comparing notes! It also provides an insight into the way a child sees a prospective future school. This month sees the second of our three part Education Life series which will also appear in the September issue.

Fairley House, described in the Sunday Times as ‘The Gold Standard’ is London’s leading day school for children with specific learning difficulties. We offer an education almost unique in that Educational Psychologists, with Speech, Language and Occupational Therapists are integrated into the school curriculum. We enjoy a central London location with excellent facilities such as a Science laboratory, art room and outdoor play space. Fairley House addresses the difficulties of children between 5 and 14 with dyslexia and dyspraxia. Children’s learning styles have often not been catered for in their previous school, leading to failure and loss of confidence, but Fairley House offers them a ‘level playing field’ where everyone has similar difficulties. Children receive a rich, stimulating educational experience integrated with therapy and specialist teaching. Teaching is multi-sensory and children learn Science, Spelling, Geography and History through interesting, hands-on activities. There is a staff: pupil ratio of 1: 3.5. The

fairley house school average stay is two to three years after which children return to mainstream schooling with a new ‘can do’ attitude. Our teaching is different. Children with specific learning difficulties benefit from learning in a multi-sensory way. The negative side of dyslexia is so often emphasised but what of the strengths? We bring out pupils’
creativity and the wonderful visual sense that many dyslexics possess if properly nurtured. Our exciting displays of art work and design technology projects are a feature of the school. A full range of sport is available at Fairley House School, including touch rugby, football, netball, hockey and cricket. We use Battersea Park as well as the Queen Mother’s sports hall and swimming pool. We play fixtures against other schools and our after school clubs offer a wide range of activities. At Fairley House our intention is to provide your son or daughter with an educational experience which rivals that of any mainstream independent school. We aim to develop children’s confidence and self-esteem, enabling their talent and enthusiasm to grow and shine. We emphasise the development of the whole child, helping him or her to gain confidence and self-esteem through an encouraging and nurturing ethos. The children have opportunities to develop sound academic and social skills and to become independent. At Fairley House, everyone succeeds.

Independent schools and the world of work
“Work”, with its horny-handed connotations, was once a dirty word in public schools. Teachers, like so many dons from Inspector Morse, preached that academe prized high ideals. Youth was golden, and a bright young thing could not serve both God and Mammon. Many pupils graduated to ivory towers but then failed to grasp the “glittering prizes” of the wider world, having received an education that privileged purely academic content over those broader skills essential to success in life, once one has left university.
The nature of work is changing at a staggering speed. Today’s generation face with choices that go far beyond those faced by previous generations. Increasingly, they will have to become familiar and skilled at working with people of different nationalities, much of their lives, they will be working with people virtually. Most will have three careers, rather than one. At its heart, the modern workplace demands vision, creativity, and innovation as well as the lessons gleaned from real experience. The leaders of today and tomorrow will lead groups and communities of people who are more diverse, virtual and global: it is a complex challenge. It’s tough out there. “A lack of Commercial Awareness is the single most common failing in graduates applying for employment (CIHE “What do employers Think and Want?”). The Times Top 100 124 a p r i l 2 0 1 2
by Pam Dubowitz Head of Merchant Taylors’ Career Service
Graduate Employers received an average of 45 applications per vacancy in 2011. A mere 23% of final year students from the UK’s top 30 universities expect to start a graduate job after finishing their degrees. (UK Graduate Careers Survey 2011). And for schools, most significantly, a record 36% of this year’s graduate jobs at the leading employers will go to applicants who have already had work experience with the organisation. (The Graduate market in 2012). Finding work that excites and inspires your son or daughter will be one of the keys to the good life you wish for them. In order to do this they will have to discover skill and personal competences that they can master deeply. There are literally thousands of different types of jobs. Most studies suggest that about 40% of graduate jobs are open to graduates of any discipline. Employability skills is the buzzphrase used frequently by employers and education professionals. The term sounds rather grey. But the skills themselves are those “soft skills” that so often make the difference between success and failure in a career: the ability to lead effectively, to communicate well, to radiate enthusiasm and commitment, work productively as part of a team,
solve problems creatively and think outside the box; and integrate an awareness of the commercial dimension into any project. Independent schools have responded to this shift. Their Careers Services work increasingly closely with employers and universities to understand what the UK’s top employers are looking for in school leavers and graduates. They aim to provide clear, accurate and up-todate information on the graduate job market and the employment prospects for today’s students, so as to advise their Sixth Formers on the universities and degree courses that are most likely to lead to a successful graduate job in the future. Most Independent schools offer excellent programmes ensuring the development of key employment skills, personal attributes and wider experience as part of the school curriculum. At Merchant Taylors’, for example, every term the Career Service runs a variety of Employer and University Led Skills sessions, which include: making an impact at interview; making effective applications; improving your CV; developing key attributes in leadership, communication and
teamwork; psychometric testing; Careers Conventions and Higher Education Conventions. Our mock interview programme for students is sector specific, involving employers, the universities and our alumni in conducting competencybased interviews, whether the field is Law, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Finance, Dentistry, or the traditional Socratic interviews of Oxford and Cambridge.
Students undertake high quality work experience to improve their skills, commercial awareness and marketability. In most independent schools, and certainly at MTS, alumni are a rich source of information and advice about the realities of a particular occupation, career paths, recommended further study and the value or otherwise of gap year activities. Such networking provides current students with hard-won personal insights into an organisation or occupation, as well as creating valuable opportunities for future networking in their own lives. If students have done all of the above by the time they leave school, they will be better prepared than many final year university students suddenly faced with the conundrum of what to do with their lives. They will be well on their way to being able to respond to the ever-changing demands of the employment market and look forward with confidence to a prosperous and happy future.

Ballgowns British Glamour Since 1950
Sponsored by Coutts. V&A Museum, South Kensington, SW7 19th May 2012 - 6th January 2013
A
spectacular exhibition of more than 60 ballgowns from 1950 to the present day. Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 will be the first exhibition in the newly renovated V&A Fashion Galleries and will feature beautiful ballgowns, red carpet evening gowns and catwalk showstoppers. There is a strong British design tradition of creating sumptuous ballgowns, through the work of designers such as Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. The exhibition will cover more than 60 years of a tradition that continues to flourish. Ballgowns will show specially made designs for social events such as private parties, royal state occasions, debutante balls 52 a p r i l 2 0 1 2
and red carpet events. Tour de force eveningwear from the V&A’s vast collection by designers such as Norman
Hartnell, Victor Stiebel, Zandra Rhodes, Catherine Walker, Jonathan Saunders and Hussein Chalayan will be on show, as well as dresses fresh from the catwalk shows of Alexander McQueen, Giles, Erdem, Roksanda Illincic, Mark Fast and Jenny Packham. Innovative designer Gareth Pugh has created a stunning metallic leather dress especially for the exhibition. Royal gowns always make headlines. A selection of royal ballgowns will be displayed,

including a Norman Hartnell gown designed for Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Princess Diana’s ‘Elvis Dress’ designed by Catherine Walker and gowns worn by today’s young royals. Dresses worn by Sandra Bullock, Daphne Guinness, Elizabeth Hurley and Bianca Jagger will also be shown. Since the 1950s, occasions for wearing formal attire have evolved from the private event to the public parade. In the post-war period as Europe struggled toward recovery, extravagant, exclusive balls provided glittering backdrops for splendid couture gowns, so helping to stimulate sartorial consumption and aspiration in Britain. The emergence of the charity ball in the 1980s provided a new platform for a wider society to dress to impress. More recently it is the red carpet that acts as the most important site of fashionable splendour. What the stars of a film wear to a premiere can sometimes deliver as many column inches as the film itself. The ground floor of the exhibition will feature over 30 ballgowns from the Museum’s permanent collection. Designs include gowns by Hardy Amies, Ossie Clark, Bill Gibb, Belleville Sassoon, Murray Arbeid, Bruce Oldfield and Julien MacDonald. The display will include film as well as contextual images and accessories such as elegant evening bags, gloves and shoes. Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 is part of Fashion 2012, the official fashion industry activity for the Olympic year. Created by the British Fashion Council, it is a central platform under which the industry is able to showcase and celebrate British fashion. It will provide a core focus for the industry and a schedule for the major fashion events and activities throughout London’s Olympic year.

Cutty Sark Her Majesty The Queen Reopens Cutty Sark on the 25th April 2012
O
n Wednesday 25th April, Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, officially reopens Cutty Sark, the world’s last surviving tea clipper and one of Britain’s greatest maritime treasures, following an extensive conservation project, with major support totalling £25 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The following day, the ship opens to visitors for the first time since 2006.
Lord Sterling, Chairman of both Royal Museums Greenwich and the Cutty Sark Trust, said ‘Cutty Sark holds a unique place in the heart for the people of Greenwich, Great Britain and indeed the rest of the world, and it is splendid that she is re-joining the London skyline once again. Cutty Sark is set in the newly landscaped Cutty Sark Gardens, created by Greenwich Council, one of our strongest supporters. We are indebted to those members of the public, who have generously contributed to the preservation of this much loved national treasure. We are also deeply appreciative of the many other major institutions, government bodies and foundations that have played a key role in providing the funds. In particular, our deep thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund who have supported the project and stood by Cutty Sark through its difficult times, and allocating £25 million of public money raised through the National Lottery. Cutty Sark’s re-launch comes in an exceptional year for Greenwich, which was granted the status of Royal
Borough in February, and will have the eyes of the world upon it during The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer. On 25 June 1957 Her Majesty opened Cutty Sark to the public for the first time and we are delighted that The Queen and HRH Duke of Edinburgh, who has been President of the Cutty Sark Trust since 1951, will return to re-open the ship.’ Launched in 1869 from Dumbarton, Scotland, Cutty Sark visited most major ports around the world. She carried cargo ranging from the finest teas to gunpowder, and from whisky to buffalo horns. Cutty Sark made her name as the fastest ship of her era during her time in the wool trade. Many tea clippers that sailed the China Seas during the 19th century lasted for only a few years . By the mid-1920s Cutty Sark was the only one still afloat and from 1938 became a training ship for the Incorporated Thames Training College at Greenhithe. In December 1954, Cutty Sark came to Greenwich where she became, and remains, a memorial to the great days of sail and to all those who served in the merchant service. Information for visitors:
Tickets to Cutty Sark can be purchased online at www. rmg.co.uk/cuttysark . Visitor enquiries: 020 8858 2698 Transport: Cutty Sark is located a short walk from the Cutty Sark DLR, and Maze Hill and Greenwich train stations. The closest tube stations are North Greenwich (to change to local buses) and Canary Wharf (to change to DLR), both on the Jubilee line.

Walking With The Wounded
Everest 2012 Expedition supported by Glenfiddich
Five Injured Servicemen On The World’s Highest Peak in May 2012. Prince Harry is to Become Patron Of The Walking With The Wounded Everest 2012 Expedition
I
n 2011, Walking With The Wounded set a World Record by taking four wounded servicemen to the Geographic North Pole. For May 2012, the charity has set its sights even higher: they will put five wounded servicemen on the summit of Mount Everest, 8,848 metres above sea level. Climbing Everest is one of the world’s toughest challenges. To succeed, the climbers will have to overcome precipitous falls, hurricane force winds and treacherous snow-covered crevasses; their bodies will have to cope with chronic altitude sickness, immense fatigue and bitter cold. Few of the world’s most experienced climbers actually reach the summit. As well as the challenges of the mountain, the Walking With The Wounded team must also deal with the injuries they received in the line of duty. Charity founder Ed Parker says, “Climbing Everest is one
56 a p r i l 2 0 1 2
of the world’s great challenges. It has long been a symbol of overcoming insurmountable obstacles against all the odds - convictions that are central to Walking With The Wounded’s mission. These servicemen physically embody those qualities, having overcome the very gravest of injuries already. They are Taking Steps For A Better Future.” Walking With The Wounded is supported by Prince Harry, who accompanied the North Pole team last year, and who returns as the Expedition Patron for 2012. Each member of the team has their own unique challenges to overcome, due to their injuries. Captain Martin Hewitt, who participated in the North Pole expedition, was injured in a firefight in Afghanistan. “My paralysed
arm means that I naturally fall to my right side,” he explains, “So balance is a major challenge. ... Walking across ladders placed above 300ft crevasses is one part of the expedition I’m certainly not looking forward to.’ Each of the three teams will endure the arduous 10day trek from Lukla in Eastern Nepal to Everest Base Camp, which stands at at 5,380m. From here, only the summit team will undertake the grueling process of acclimitisation to reach the summit. In total, the entire expedition will last for 6-7 gruelling weeks.
Walking with the Wounded aims to raise over £2m to re-skill and re-train injured servicemen and women from the British Armed Forces. The charity aims to raise funds for education projects and training courses which specifically take in to account the physical and mental injuries sustained by servicemen and women. None of this would be possible without the support of sponsors and partners. Corporate sponsors cover the complete cost of the Expeditions. This ensures that every penny of donations made to the Walking With The Wounded charity go to supporting wounded servicemen and women.

It will examine the many sources of his creativity, shoes inspired by performance, cabaret and the showgirl; fantasy and fairy tale; art and architecture; film; landscape and travel. The exhibition will also focus on the handcrafted shoe, one-off designs which incorporate his highly innovative ideas, forms and materials. There will be a special section dedicated to the shoes designed for ‘Fetish’ an exhibition at the La Gallerie Du Passage, Paris in 2007, a unique collaboration of photography between Louboutin and acclaimed artist David Lynch. At the core of the exhibition will be a unique exploration of Louboutin’s design process, taking the visitor through every stage of the design journey, revealing how a shoe is constructed, from the initial drawing and first prototype through to production in the factory. Looking beyond design and production the exhibition will also explore the company’s innovative store design in which Louboutin is always closely involved.

the Macmillan Hampstead Heath walk last year. She had this message for 2012 participants; “’The London Walk is a great opportunity for people to get together, see the sights of London and raise funds for an amazing cause. The atmosphere on the day of the walk is fantastic as everyone has their own personal reason for being there and supporting Macmillan.” She also had nothing but praise for the support (financially and emotionally) Macmillan gave her during her treatment and for the staff at The Royal Marsden Hospital; “When I received my diagnosis, I went online and requested several information booklets. Every one of them was clear, well-written and easy to understand. Many of my questions were answered even before I had even had my first consultation.... “One
of my big concerns was the financial implications of my illness. Macmillan gave me the information that I needed to claim financial assistance, which lifted a great weight off my mind.” There are over fifty organised walks in the UK so you can choose one that’s perfect for you. Or people can create their own route. It couldn’t be easier to take part in Miles for Macmillan. All the money raised through Miles for Macmillan will help Macmillan provide medical, financial, practical and emotional support to the two million people living with cancer in the UK. Walkers will be required to pay a £10 registration fee to participate. Under 16’s go free! Macmillan Cancer Support and Boots UK are working together to improve the lives of everyone affected by cancer. They will help to deliver more ways to access information and support on the high street and online, and increase awareness of vital services that Macmillan provides.

SWIM AT HOME EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR AN ORIGIN POOL. IT'S A FAMILY THING...
O
rigin has been in the business of constructing indoor and outdoor swimming pools for over thirty years. In that time they have progressed from simple timber buildings to the impressive architect design schemes of today. To celebrate this anniversary Origin has commissioned a total redesign of their visual identity. This includes a bright new logo, excitingly updated publicity material and van fleet, and an interactive user-friendly website. To accompany this flurry of activity the company has produced an all new colour brochure, showing as never before the breadth of Origin's capability. Covering all the styles that this unique British company has become known for, from classic original styles to custom designed extensions that are a true product of yours and Origin's combined thinking, the brochure is economical with words, letting the beautiful pictures tell the story. Origin has also committed to an occasional newsletter, NewsWave, to announce the latest and greatest improvements the company has been working ?

on, and of course show the pick of the recent triumphs. Add a monthly emailing, Origin eNews, and the new publicity thrust is complete ready to take on the next thirty years! But the caring attention to detail, the meticulous, design work and the insistence of only using the finest materials available hasn't changed. The company still handles every element of the process, without bringing in any outside experts whatsoever. From the first meeting, to the sketch ideas produced as a result, to the architectural drawings and finished visuals, to the guidance through the planning process, to the earthworks, the building and completing. Origin takes the process from beginning to end -
and all you have to do is jump into the state-of-the-art heated pool at the end of it all. Origin has become Britain's longest established, best known pool company because they have accepted every challenge, crossed every hurdle, and with great experience and ingenuity created a product that is considered second to none, by customers and the pool industry alike. The architects and designers are seasoned players in their fields, and bring a wealth of experience to every aspect of this complex and demanding business. Even the teams who build the final pool houses are eminently professional, many having been involved since the very early days of the company. Building an indoor pool house is a complex business, so many of Origin's buildings are based on the company's established styles. For example,
The Panorama has a light, airy construction with a bright hipped glazed lantern roof – and is built from solid timber with an optional brick or rendered facing, to co-ordinate with the style of your home. The Barn has all the appearance and appeal of a country barn conversion, but built to state-of-the-art standards to be the home for a superb heated pool. The Sirius has exceptional designer looks and a wide expanse of glass bringing a real indoor/outdoor feel to your swimming. These established style-inspired pool houses come in a wide range of standard sizes, and the heated pool will be in a style of your choice. Origin is recognised as the foremost designers of one-o buildings and extensions, designed and developed to co-ordinate with their surroundings perfectly. Materials and finishes are carefully matched with the existing structure – so the finished result is a handsome extension to the property, hiding a luxurious heated pool. To do full justice to Origin's expertise they include outdoor pools as part of their remit. The company is famous for creating pool houses, but they are all too aware that many people prefer to swim in the sun (or under the stars) and an outdoor pool can be one of the most aspirational features a home can have. The level of skill and understanding of pool technology has helped Origin to become one of the country's foremost outdoor pool providers. Origin's new logo has a strapline "The original indoor & outdoor pool company." Get in touch, and find out just why the original is usually the best. Origin Leisure Harefield Middlesex UB9 6TH Telephone 01895 823366 or email info@originleisure.com for the new brochure, or to be included in future distribution of NewsWave and Origin eNews. Glass Glass THE CONCEPTOF OF THE CONCEPT

he concept of glass being introduced to domestic properties with contemporary designs has altered greatly since the early examples during the late 1960’s, today with the technology available and design criteria to produce shapes and structures in accordance with the clients diverse requirements of today, be that flat or curved glass we have the expertise and knowledge to produce a whole range of frameless structural glazing. is can be anything from a full glass structure to walk on glass floors, balustrades or perhaps a rooflight or glass staircase, the choice of bespoke glazing can be fully achieved with ‘Glasspace’. e classic use for ‘Glasspace’ is to create a family room or to add an extension to the kitchen to create an integrated living space. When initial design criteria’s are formed we discuss our clients requirements and now with the extensive use of glass and larger designs has now enabled us to produce single and double storey enclosures thus providing large open areas to enhance properties with a modern and contemporary alternative to standard PVC conservatories. Our projects range in price and we have no minimum order value, each project is priced individually in respect of size and design. We have completed our contracts in Scotland, Wales, throughout England and are presently undertaking projects in both Northern Ireland and Ireland. We also cover the Channel Islands and parts of Europe. Glass is by far the easiest way to enhance your existing or new home, made from sheets of glass; they are designed to connect your living space directly to your garden or terrace. Like traditional counterparts such as PVC or timber conservatories they are available in many alternative shapes and sizes. In many inner city areas where rear courtyard or basements are being re-designed to integrate to the existing house ‘Glasspace’ will connect the area and levels of the home. e use of structural silicones allows bonding of glass to glass and therefore the requirement to provide a solid metal or timber structure for the glass to be glazed into has been removed, we can provide a structure which from the inside viewing out provides a full glass aspect without the inclusion of any vertical bars obscuring the vision, externally the frameless structure provides a strong and visible individual design. All projects are different and the design of the structure is achieved by discussion with the client and architect and also within our knowledge of what engineering requirements are required and available. Glass panels of up to 5.0 metres in length by 3.0 metres in width are the maximum that can be utilised in the design, however this maximum size panel may not always be comfortable with the design and smaller panels should then be used. Eagle S. G & W Ltd undertake the complete project of design and installation of the Glasspace from initial digital survey, production of drawings to site negotiations with your architect or builder to view how the structure will integrate to the existing build and finally to site installation and final cleaning. Should panels require installation by crane then road closure is organised and controlled by us, all our teams of site personnel and office based CAD and management are fully conversant with the system and are available to discuss your requirements at any time. For more information or to discuss your proposed project in more detail call us on 0845 230 9569 or visit or web sites www.glasspace.com or www.eaglesgw.com ■

A house for all seasons!
If you’re in need of more space, moving house can be an expensive business. It was a process that Walton resident Debra found too costly for comfort.
“M
oving home alone costs around £25,000, and that’s before you’ve paid to change the kitchen or the bathroom of your new home to your liking,” says Debra. “I’ve lived in the area for 20 years, and didn’t want particularly to move, so extending my home seemed like the most practical option which would give me the living space I was after.” Debra had wanted a house facelift for some time, so she opted for a threemetre extension and kitchen remodelling to the ground floor of her home, including a new shower room and utility room. The extension would make the house flow better, Debra felt, creating an open-plan feel in the kitchen and living room creating a light, open and airy space to enjoy. The remodelling also created a separate living room for her sons to have as their own space and entertain their own friends in. While she was contemplating having the work done downstairs, Debra decided to treat herself to a bit of indulgence upstairs too. “Although I’d initially just wanted a ground-floor extension, I decided eventually to have an en suite bathroom created to my bedroom in a first-floor extension as well,” Debra reflects. “I wanted a space my two sons, who are both musicians and have taken over the house with their instruments, wouldn’t be able to mess up - that was all mine. As a Mum, I felt I deserved some ‘me’ time at long last!” Debra found the process whereby L&E recommend
82 a p r i l 2 0 1 2
potential customers see work they’ve done in other houses inspiring. “Before you even get involved in discussions with L&E, they recommend you look at other work they’ve produced. That helped me decide on a skylight for my living room which is inset with LED lights, which otherwise I’d never have thought of. It’s one of my favourite features, and the first thing I do when I come home is switch on the lights.” What I also found immensely helpful is that L&E recommended suppliers for all fittings and fixtures, and even got me a discount.” The work has changed the whole feel of Debra’s home, leading her to laughingly suggest that it’s now a completely different house! When the project was finished in June, Debra had missed all the good summer weather to enjoy her revamped home – but it hasn’t stopped her showing it off. “It’s certainly not what people expect when they walk through the door – the feel and
atmosphere of the house has totally changed! It’s a home I can enjoy in any weather – I can’t wait for the nights to draw in so I can light candles and relax with a glass of wine in my new en suite. Equally, when the bi-folding doors are open in my living room and kitchen, I feel like I’m outside enjoying my garden, even when I’m inside baking. “It’s undoubtedly added value to my home, which now feels more like a party house than anything else – it’s amazing how many people I can fit into the kitchen when I’m entertaining.” A house for all seasons, indeed! “Debra Du Toit is so confident recommending the L&E (Lofts and Extensions) she is even happy to show you round her new home. Contact her via L&E to arrange a viewing.” L&E (Lofts and Extensions), The Old Office Block, 16 Elmtree Road, Teddington, TW11 8ST T: 0800 326 5506, E: info@dontmove-extend.com, W: www.dontmove-extend.com

ike most period properties in London lacking in storage space, our home in Wandsworth Common was no exception until a fabulous bespoke furniture company really changed the way we live. My friend Jane who I meet for coffee most days in between school runs had been raving about some new wardrobes these guys had installed for her bedroom and in the kids’ rooms with built-in desk work areas and shelving. Curiosity finally got the better of our family and we decided to visit and take a look. Sure enough, the furniture looked absolutely stunning and my children were envious of Jake and Elly’s bedrooms. The master bedroom was the most inspiring for me, they had built a wardrobe wall to wall over a chimney breast to create plenty of hanging space and shelving in the middle with fab accessories like full length mirrors, shoe drawers, a jewelry drawer and belt hooks for William. All the doors and drawers are on automatic soft closers; it had such a luxurious feel. It wasn’t just the quality of the furniture that had so impressed Jane. She said that the design consultant Andrew Speer had been excellent in conveying her requirements, offering advice and putting a concept together. The whole project was well managed and the installers were fantastic. She told us how it made a big difference that the installers clearly enjoy their job and are all permanent team members, something that really showed in their work ethic. They even cleaned up after themselves! Coming back home after visiting Jane was not easy. We had inherited built-in cupboards in the bedrooms
from the previous owner. It’s incredible now that I look back, how long we put up with them, but until we had seen Jane’s cupboards, I guess we did not realize the potential. Our old wardrobes looked pretty dated and we really lacked hanging space. I even had to have an extra clothes rail in the spare bedroom. My husband John was concerned that this kind of luxury bespoke furniture would be more than we could afford to pay, although I did point out that new built-in furniture would add value to the property. The next day we called the number on the business card that Jane had slipped into my hand as we had left. We at least wanted to take advantage of the free design consultation to hear any ideas they had to maximize storage. I was also keen to see their finishes. Two months on and we were enjoying our own new fitted furniture and John is extra chuffed because it cost less than he thought. I have ceremoniously binned the hanging rail in the spare room and I still have extra space. My modest shoe collection is now super organized; I love my new bedroom and the kids don’t want to leave their rooms. All thanks to the fab team at Proline Interior Solutions in Wimbledon SW19. Take a look for yourself. I promise you won’t regret it. Jane and I are going shoe shopping this weekend to celebrate! Jennifer Layton SW11, London” Proline Exhibition and Interiors Ltd. f you’ve ever kept an aquarium before you’ll know how time consuming they can be. I’m sure that like me, you lead a busy life and would struggle to find the time. Besides, cleaning out any fish tank is hardly what you’d call a fun job.
Now there’s good news.
Not all aquariums are hard work. You’re looking at biOrbs. These aquariums are engineered for people who live a busy lifestyle. They’re easier to look after than conventional aquariums, you only have to change the filter in the tank once every six weeks. It’s also really easy to change, it takes just seconds. What’s wrong with a traditional aquarium?
Not much, they’re quite adequate and that’s the problem. By and large their design is much the same as it was 100 years ago and
Who ever heard of an
aquarium that’s easy to look after?
the plain truth is that a lot of traditional aquariums don’t work very efficiently. Lets start with the filter, surely the heart of any aquarium. Many traditional aquariums have a filter on the side of the tank (some even have them at the top) but they ignore one key fact - fish waste sinks. So does uneaten fish food. So wouldn’t it make sense to put the filter at the bottom? The biOrb designers thought so too. All biOrbs have a filter hidden at the bottom. Put politely, it filters where there is most to filter. Ever wondered why traditional aquariums are generally the same long thin rectangular shape? It’s because folklore says that you need a large surface area of water to allow gases in the water to escape. Like many old folklores, it’s not the full story. Again, the biOrb engineers came up with a more efficient answer - air driven filtration. Air is pumped into the bottom of a biOrb forcing bubbles break the waters surface. According to the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover this creates higher levels of oxygen in the water than a traditional aquarium. They should know, they are probably the oldest and most respected Veterinary University in the world. One last thing.
Anyone with an old style aquarium will know that visitors to their home peer inside and admire the fish. With a biOrb, they stand back and stare at the biOrb first, then they step forward and admire the fish. It’s a cool piece of home furniture as well as an aquarium.

P
urchasing and having a wooden floor installed by The Wooden Floor Specialists Ltd couldn’t have been simpler or stress free. They have been established for 25 years and have evolved into one of the most prominent hardwood suppliers, restorers, renovators and contractors within the industry. They specialize in the supply and installation of new hardwood flooring and the renovation of existing wood flooring. They had been recommended to me by a good friend who had just had her beautiful oak 92 a p r i l 2 0 1 2
parquet floor renovated by them and it looks beautiful. Having decided to have a wooden floor installed in my open plan kitchen/dining/ sitting room area, a trip to their showroom in Balham revealed a huge choice of woods and colours. They offer a full bespoke service, and their boards can be hand finished in a huge variety of colours and finishes or finished to the customers own colour specification, the possibilities are endless. There is even a finishing shop where customers can pop in to meet
the staff and see their floor being finished first hand. Finally with the help of the unbiased and experienced sales team I finally chose a couple of possibilities, jet black and black. Next was a comprehensive and free site survey to discuss my needs in greater detail. I was also able to see my choice of wood in a range of finishes and colours/ shades through samples that the surveyor bought with him. It was great to have the opportunity to see what the range of options were in the room where the floor was to be laid. The surveyor was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions with regard to finishes and fitting. Very professional. The quote arrived within 24 hours and included all of the necessary accessories needed to complete the job, including the dismounting, trimming and re hanging of the doors. With a date agreed, I waited for my beautiful floor to be laid. The fitters were prompt, 7.30am, courteous and extremely professional.
The job took 2 days and I couldn’t be more pleased with the end result. My floor is beautiful and complements my room perfectly, I just love it. The fitters were able to talk me through all the maintenance questions about the floor and left my room clean and tidy. I was also told how to maintain my floor and which products to use to clean the wood and which to avoid. They even told me how to wash the floor, always with the grain, never across it! The Wooden Floor Specialists Ltd are members of the Contract Flooring Association and only derive woods from sustainable sources. Their timbers and products carry FSC certification, something that I was anxious about. Their 5 Year guarantee also gave me peace of mind. As my friend with the parquet floor hidden under a carpet discovered, The Wooden Floor Specialists Ltd, don’t just supply and fit hardwood flooring but also provide a renovation/sanding service for existing wooden floors. 020 8675 2431 wood.floors@btconnect.com www.woodenfloors.co.uk 302-304 Cavendish Road London SW12 0PL Showroom Hours Mon - Fri 9.00am - 5.00pm Sat 10.00am - 4.00pm

Kay Greveson RGN BA (HONS) Independent prescriber
london’s BOTOX queen
here is an increasing trend for both men and women to seen non-surgical, non-invasive methods for achieving a younger look. There are various options available that fall into this category, including wrinkle relaxing injections such as Botox®, dermal fillers and skin peels, to name just a few. Erika Moore recently visited Sister Kay Greveson at her clinic in Hampstead after becoming increasingly frustrated by her lines and wrinkles. Here she outlines her experience. I work in a job that involves dealing with clients on a daily basis, so my appearance is important. I was increasingly aware of the lines on my forehead and between my eyes. I always felt as though I looked angry, and older than I was, even though I am only in my early 30’s. I approached Sister Kay Greveson her clinic within Aquarius Spa, Hampstead, about two months ago as I had been recommended to her by a friend. I was initially nervous as I have never had any sort of treatment like that before. I was worried about having the injections and what I would look like afterwards but Kay put my mind at ease immediately. We had a detailed chat about what results I wanted from the treatment; she took a medical history and some photographs. Kay explained that Botox® is a safe, naturally occurring protein that works by blocking nerve

She gave me the option of using a ‘numbing’ local anaesthetic cream, which I took. Despite being nervous, I did not find the procedure bad at all. Kay talked me through each step and made sure I was comfortable throughout. She was very gentle and I hardly felt the injections; it certainly wasn’t as bad as I had imagined. She explained that
it would take between 2 and 14 days for the full results to be visible and advised me to come back after this time so she could check on the result and have a ‘dose adjustment’ of treatment if required. It was so exciting to see the lines disappearing little by little each day and I don’t think I’ve ever looked in the mirror so much as I did in those first 2 weeks! In the end I did not need more treatment as I was more than pleased with the results. I have a natural look and still have facial expression but no lines!! Botox® is not permanent, lasting only three to four months, after which, the lines that were there prior to treatment slowly return. I will definitely have it again when the time comes as it has made me feel so much more confident with my appearance. I feel that I look more relaxed and don’t have an ‘angry’ look from frowning all of the time.

Rediscover Your
Smile
A
smile is a wonderful thing. At United Smile Centres, we understand the importance of a healthy smile, and the confidence it can bring. That’s why we specialise in smiles, using the latest dental implant technology to help give you the smile you deserve. Our special “Permanent Teeth in a Day” treatment can literally transform your smile, restoring your confidence so you never have to worry about your teeth again. Jo, a busy professional from London, recently came to us for a free consultation: “I had been suffering with serious infection in my teeth for quite some time, and was 104 a p r i l 2 0 1 2
generally feeling very unwell because of it. Ultimately, it wasn’t going to be long before I lost the teeth so I started to consider my options. “If I’m honest the thought of using a denture filled me with horror – I really didn’t want a denture, or even a partial denture in my mouth! Thankfully I came across an advert for United Smile Centres in the paper, and so arranged a consultation to see how they could help. “Philip, the Patient Care Co-ordinator, was absolutely amazing, and clearly explained my treatment options, along with the procedure itself, and even helped me arrange the finance. The whole process
was so smooth and efficient I went for the consultation on the Wednesday and on the following Monday I had the work done.” At United Smile Centres, our team of highly qualified, dedicated clinicians are among the leading dental surgeons in the UK. Because we specialise in the “Permanent Teeth in a Day” technique we have the most up to date facilities to ensure that your implants are fitted precisely and with the minimum of fuss and discomfort – all on the same day. According to Jo, the speed and efficiency of the whole process was a major factor in her decision: “I know other people who’ve had dental implants. The whole process has taken them two years, along with trekking to dentists located in distant locations. Where United Smile Centres is concerned however, you have a full arch of teeth on dental implants – five in my case – which was very reasonably priced when you take into account the whole ‘package’ including the time-scale, the cost of the treatment and all the follow-up appointments. My restoration even has a 10-year guarantee!” Though implant surgery is a detailed and highly involved process, when it came to her treatment with United Smiles Centres, for Jo, the time simply flew by: “The procedure itself took four hours, though I can’t remember a thing about it due to the sedation. The United Smile Centres team have qualified sedationists on hand to oversee the whole process, which was a great reassurance to me as I was very clear I didn’t want a general anaesthetic. “After the treatment was complete, I have to say the aftercare was superb. They escorted me home in a
chauffeur driven car with one of their nursing assistants. The following morning the kind and helpful United Smile Centres team even phoned me to check on my progress. They were so patient, and so absolutely lovely with it. “I’ve had a fabulous experience with United Smile Centres – I really can’t recommend them highly enough. From the nursing staff to the technicians and the surgeons themselves, they were all great. When you look at the credentials of the people treating you, it’s hugely reassuring. You know you’re in the hands of a highly experienced team.” Looking back over her whole experience, Jo is astounded at the level of care she received and the positive difference the “Permanent Teeth in a Day” treatment has had on her life. “Until you’ve been in the position where as a reasonably attractive woman you’re faced with the prospect of dentures, I don’t think you’d understand how horribly that rocks your confidence and generally affects your whole mood. It’s a very depressing thing to confront at a relatively young age. “Thanks to United Smile Centres however I feel as if I’ve got my life back and I can now smile with confidence. I’ve even done some modelling since I’ve had my teeth done!” No matter your age or dental circumstances, United Smile Centres can help transform your smile. If you are suffering with your teeth, and think it’s time to make a change, then why not call us to arrange a free consultation? With state-of-the-art facilities and some of the leading specialists in their field, we offer the very best care in a truly supportive, relaxed environment. Call us today to find out how we can help you rediscover the joy of a simple smile.

as manipulation and massage, together with ultrasound and other forms of electrotherapy to effectively reduce pain, swelling and inflammation. Each instructional plan is tailored to the specific learning needs of the individual and embodies an interactive, balanced approach.
112 APRIL
Many children and adults struggle with problems related to reading, spelling, and language comprehension. Factor in diagnoses like dyslexia, dyspraxia, auditory processing disorder, and autism, and it can be difficult to know where to turn for the right educational assistance. With over 25 years of experience, the internationally renowned organisation Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes offers solutions for many learning difficulties. Lindamood-Bell® researchvalidated instruction is based on a theory of cognition that can address the global learning needs of all individuals. Lindamood-Bell instruction develops and strengthens the sensory-cognitive functions of phonemic awareness, symbol imagery, and concept imagery. A weakness in one of these functions can cause reading, spelling, and comprehension difficulties, and will interfere with a student’s ability to learn. “Our unique instruction and one-to-one setting allows for great growth, and this environment also nurtures each student’s self-esteem and confidence,” explains Darcie Molina, Director of the LindamoodBell London learning centre. “It is our goal that all of our students become independent, self-correcting learners in all aspects of their lives.” In order to provide the appropriate instruction for each individual, a learning profile must be established – this is accomplished with a
comprehensive battery of assessments. This learning evaluation is analysed and a consultation is then held to explain the individual’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as a plan for instruction. Each instructional plan is tailored to the specific learning needs of the individual and embodies an interactive, balanced approach. The intensity of instruction is another notable difference between Lindamood-Bell and other tutoring services that provide learning assistance. Lindamood-Bell often recommends intensive instruction, which consists of approximately two to four hours per day, five days per week. “Our average results with intensive instruction may see two to three years’ growth in as little as six to eight weeks,” Molina says. The majority of Lindamood-Bell students are between the ages of 7-14, but because the unique LindamoodBell instructional programme is not age, year, or performance specific, they see students of all levels and ages, including adults. The Lindamood-Bell centre in London will host an Open Evening on Thursday, 24th May, from 6:30 to 8:30pm, with a presentation at 7pm.
