he UK’s most spectacular winter event returns for the 5th year running with FREE admission and even more entertainment and new attractions. Since its launch in 2007, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland has attracted a staggering 8 million visitors, firmly becoming the Capital’s most popular and dazzling winter event. With beautifully decorated attractions set out across 20 acres of historic parkland, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland provides festive fun over seven weeks. Celebrity fans including Prince Harry, Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer & Matthew Vaughn, Chris Martin, Tom Cruise, Alexandra Burke, Fearne Cotton and Liz Hurley have all been spotted enjoying Winter Wonderland’s festivities. This year, PWR Events and The Royal Parks are delighted to announce that

the ice rink will be given a new home and will surround the Victorian Band Stand, creating a beautiful centre piece for Winter Wonderland. Stretching over 1,350m2, the outdoor rink will be the biggest of its kind in the UK. It will take 10 days to build using 100,035 litres of water which will be frozen at -12c. At night the ice rink will be transformed, as suspended above the rink will be 108,000 pea-lights illuminating the ice, creating a magical atmosphere for skaters. Other attractions making a return include the Giant Observation Wheel and the beautiful Angels Christmas Market, featuring over one hundred wooden chalets offering unusual and handmade gifts. A number of stalls will also feature traditional Christmas items such as wooden toys, nativity scenes and decorations. Last year
Father Christmas handed out over 50,000 presents to well behaved children, and he will make a welcome return this year as an ever popular free attraction. The UK’s favourite, Zippos Circus, also returns with two completely new shows – a daytime show for all the family, Zippos Christmas Circus starring Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
and friends, and an evening show for older thrill seekers, Zippos Cirque Extreme. For thrill seekers everywhere, Cirque Extreme is a jaw dropping, daredevil show combining some of the most thrilling and dangerous acts the world of circus has to offer. Top of the bill is the Motorbike Globe of Death, a beyond-thrilling spectacle starring three Brazilians riding together at up to 60mph in an unbelievably small steel globe. There will be perilous aerial work on the High Wire and Trapeze, death-defying antics on the rapidly-rotating steel Wheel of Death, reckless chainsaw juggling, thrilling fire acts and electrifying break dancing. There will be more bars, cafes & restaurants, including the new Carousel Bar, which rotates gently whilst you sip your mulled wine, and the Bavarian Village where you’ll find Bratwurst, bars and live music. In addition, there will also be the authentic Spiegel Saloon situated within a stunning ballroom, with its cosy booths, tables and chairs and cabaret acts. There will be three new and exhilarating thrill rides in the Alpine Adventure area alongside the ever popular Paower Tower, Christmas Coaster, Avalanche and Ski Jump Swing as well as more traditional rides and games. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is a fantastic day out for everyone, so be sure to book your tickets early and make Winter Wonderland part of your Christmas tradition.

O
ver the past ten years Britain has developed a passion for vintage fashion thanks to the likes of Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Sex and the City stylists who’ve whetted our appetite for a variety of vintage fashion. London offers probably the best shopping experience of any city in the world. London is the shopping capital of the world.
F
rom the boutiques of Bond Street to the teeming Oxford Street fashion stores and vibrant street markets, there is something to suit even the most discerning of shoppers. Find out where the best of London shopping can be found with our guide to where you can get your shopping fix!
REGENT STREET (above)
Regent Street is home to a number of large outlets offering everything from toys and trench coats to fabrics and food. Perhaps the street’s most famous resident is the elegant Liberty store, founded in 1875. Many of the shops along Regent Street (and especially Saville Row, running parallel) are more expensive than most on Oxford Street but more exclusive. If you have children, the world’s best toy shop should give them something to remember! Hamleys is a London institution, a huge, well-run emporium stacked from floor to ceiling with excellent toys. It is a wonderful place to take a child, and great fun for adults as well. Other stores that amaze are Jaeger, Hobbs, Mappin & Webb, Karen Millen, Reiss, Swarovski, TM Lewin, Nike’s flagship store, The Apple Store and the first British Ferrari store a real treat for Ferrari enthusiasts, and so much more. For those looking for that extra special treat, Godiva is one of the most prestigious chocolate brands in the world and if your mouth is watering you can visit one of the many eateries available on Regent Street including the new La bottega del Caffè, Pret A Manger, il Pomodorino, Ping Pong.
BOND STREET
For serious fashionistas, Bond Street and its environs are the place to be seen in and shop! New Bond Street boasts one of the biggest and best concentrations of designer shops in the world, including Donna Karan, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Nicole Farhi, Armani, Jimmy Choo and Ralph Lauren. Quintessentially English style can be found at the Mulberry and Burberry stores. Bond Street also plays host to Sotheby’s auction house and a number of antique stores and markets have popped up in the area. If you or your other half has a thing for diamonds, you should know that Cartier, Tiffany and Asprey are among the jewellers on this exclusive, expensive street.

KING’S ROAD
The area was made famous by a lively local scene during the ‘Swinging 60s’ and punk fuelled seventies. The doyenne of punk fashion, Vivienne Westwood, still runs her first ever store at the so-called ‘World’s End’ end of The King’s Road. Although the area has none of the character of that time, it is still full of famous faces and is one of the best and most varied places to shop and eat in London. For fashion, King’s Road offers high street regulars such as Jigsaw, French Connection and Gap but if you’re looking for something more original American Classics sell vintage Levi’s and tuxedos. At the Sloane Square end, crowned by Peter Jones, there is the pedestrianised Duke of York Square - full of modern shops and cafes, including Mary Quant and Yves Delorme. You can purchase anything from antiques at The Furniture Cave, to a £40,000 bed from Hastens, also taking in upmarket stores quirkily named R.Soles, Sweaty Betty and After Noah.
KNIGHTSBRIDGE
OXFORD STREET
Oxford Street lays claim to being London’s busiest street. The opening of Debenhams and Selfridges in 1909 marked the beginning of the street’s dominance as a shopping area. Amongst the chaos and bustle, retail therapists will find an oasis of calm in the area’s unrivalled collection of department stores. Debenhams, Marks & Spencer and John Lewis all have their flagship stores on Oxford Street. Selfridges is the department store of Londoners. There’s an incredible selection of British and international designers available and plenty of great restaurants and cafes to chill out in if you get a bit tired. Oxford Street also offers some of the best choice in terms of high street fashion, if you can fight your way through the crowds. Among the best shops are inexpensive but stylish favourites Zara, Mango & Monsoon. You will also find one of the largest collection of eateries, where you can relax for 28 d e c e m b e r 2 0 1 1
Knightsbridge is one of the most unchanged, attractive areas of central London, with little in the way of offices nearby but plenty of shops and restaurants to serve the needs of local residents. There are plenty of ways to spend money in this beguiling corner of the capital. Harrods is the most famous of the local stores, a huge tourist attraction employing over 3,000 staff in more than 300 departments. However, some much prefer Harvey Nichols, a chicer alternative with three floors of designer wear, a huge beauty department and delectable delicacies on the fifth floor, all at extremely high prices. If you have the money to spend and want some designer clothes, look no further than Sloane Street. Christian Dior, Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Armani, Fendi and Dolce & Gabbana are all within easy walking distance of each other - even in heels! There are also a number of exquisite specialist lingerie stores including Rigby & Peller on Hans Road and La Perla on Sloane Street itself.
WESTFIELD LONDON
With a distinctive mix of designer and high street labels, Westfield London offers the ultimate shopping experience, with over 265 shops from over 15 countries. The Village is a must-shop for all luxury lovers, featuring premium brands, from the world’s leading fashion houses, hot designers and chic boutiques including Burberry, Dior, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Prada, Versace, Tiffany & Co and Omega. Travelling by car is simple. With easy access from the West Cross route and 4,500 parking spaces housed neatly for you, right underneath the shops. This Christmas, Westfield boasts it’s first ice rink so you can literally skate and shop!
s h o ppi n g COVENT GARDEN
CARNABY STREET
The name Carnaby Street is synonymous with 1960s ‘Swinging London’ - a phrase coined by Time magazine. Nowadays the area has gone through something of a revival and is once again boasting cutting edge designer talents and trendy street ware. With over 140 shops, bars and restaurants to choose from in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit. Shoppers will find rich pickings at urban streetwear shops like Replay, Diesel, Howies, American Apparel and Puma. There are also a number of streets in the immediate area around Carnaby Street - notably Newburgh Street which runs parallel, Foubert’s Place, and Kingly Court which has three floors of one-off ‘concept’ shops, cafes and restaurants set around an open courtyard. Carnaby Street is a fantastic place to buy sports, urban and footwear, and there’s also a number of fine cosmetics shops - seek out the Cowshed and MAC Cosmetics - as well as a few boutiques selling vintage mod clothing. Altogether very stylish.
A visit to Covent Garden is a must, whether you intend to shop, or soak up the atmosphere watching the street entertainers. The focal point of Covent Garden, the market, has dominated the area ever since the Middle Ages. There is also an open-air cobbled area where miming and juggling acts can often be found. Classical music and opera singing often fills the air - not from the Royal Opera House but from street performers who often stage impromptu concerts in the courtyards below street level. Covent Garden is a mecca for shoppers - high Street outlets include Marks & Spencer, Oasis, French Connection, Next and Monsoon, with menswear at Diesel, Replay, Oakley and Paul Smith. Neal Street, which runs to the north west of the Piazza, has more in the way of urbanwear including as well as trendy trainer shops including Office and Size? as well as the Natural Shoe Store and Terra Plana ‘ethical shoes’. If (perish the thought!) you tire of clothes shopping there are scores of excellent places to stop off for a coffee.
CANARY WHARF
Canary Wharf is a thriving space and vibrant business district with a wide range of shops, restaurants, pubs and wine bars, as well as healthcare and leisure facilities and an extensive arts and events programme. Their vast range of highprofile retailers secures them as one of the most popular shopping destinations in London eg Aspinal of London, Austin Reed, Bang & Olufsen, Browns London, Dune, Hackett, Karen Millen, Links of London and TM Lewin.
WESTFIELD STRATFORD CITY
With over 300 stores offering fashion, food, homewares, health and beauty and much more, you’re sure to find just what you’re looking for. With a state of the art cinema, a luxury bowling alley, exciting food options and a range of entertainment, Westfield Stratford City is much more than just a shopping centre. You can now glide over the ice and take in views of the Olympic Park... Westfield Stratford City is celebrating its first Christmas with an amazing outdoor ice rink in Chestnut Plaza! The ice rink will be open morning, evening and night. Westfield’s Santa’s Grotto is the UK’s first to have a 5D film and each child in the Grotto at Westfield Stratford City will have the opportunity to personally feature in the film, helping Elbow the Elf on his journey to help save Santa’s presents from the good Elf turned bad! ince the swinging sixties, the King’s Road has been synonymous with style; today it is still considered one of London’s most fashionable thoroughfares. However, many tourists don’t get beyond the Chelsea fire station and miss some of London’s most interesting, fashionable and stylish secrets: the boutiques, restaurants, cafes and shops that make the western end of the King’s Road THE place to be this Christmas. From Chelsea Quarter Café and My Old Dutch down to Bea’s of Bloomsbury and Tri Yoga, the properties down this stretch of the King’s Road are mainly owned and managed by the Sloane Stanley Estate, which has been a part of Chelsea for over 250 years. The Estate has a continued vision and commitment to invest in properties to ensure this end of the King’s Road will remain a vibrant and unique place to shop, eat, relax and live. Take time out from the shopping and relax in one of the many cafes and restaurants, from the popular and trendy Thai restaurant, Busaba Eathai which is just about to open up, joining Beaufort House Brasserie, the iconic Bluebird restaurant, Sushino, My
Old Dutch and The Big Easy for a range of relaxed but stylish eating options. For a special cake and an amazing cup of coffee try Bea’s of Bloomsbury, or the Chelsea Quarter Café. If it’s sophisticated glamour you’re after, then treat your friends to a cocktail or a glass of champagne at JuJu’s, 2011 winner of The London Club and Bar Awards. If you’re looking for a special Christmas outfit then head to the fabulous fashion boutiques where you’ll discover the timeless and vintage style of Ghost, glamorous, exclusive and secret labels from Austique and beautiful contemporary styles from Anonymous, famed for its signature lace trims. Some people are just hard to shop for at Christmas, but if it’s a unique present you are after then you’ll find it in one of the many fascinating independent shops such as Willow, Green and Stone and Classic Prints. Interior specialists, Designers Guild, Sigmar and Osborne and Little, will be able to provide all year round inspiration to brighten up the home. Those in the know are already attracted to this end of the King’s Road, so this Christmas, head west down the King’s Road to discover an address that will really impress.

THE DEERS OF RICHMOND PARK
Richmond Park was originally a deer-hunting park, and still has 300 Red Deer and 350 fallow deer.
W
hen Charles I moved his court to Richmond Palace (no longer standing) to avoid the plague in London, in 1625, he turned his manor into a deer park with herds of fallow and red deer. The park was enclosed with an 8 mile long brick wall in 1637. Most of the wall that still encloses Richmond park is the original. The Royal deer have been maintained in Richmond ever since. March and early April, when the trees have not yet leafed out, is a particularly good time to spot them. The deer have played a major role in the Park’s history and have shaped the landscape too. Their special grassland habitat depends on grazing and the parkland trees have a distinctive ‘browse line’ as the deer eat all the leaves and twigs growing below about 1.5 metres. Deer grazing also prevents tree seedlings from growing, keeping the grassland open. For young trees to survive they need to be protected against damage from deer antlers for some 50 years. During the autumn the deer ‘rut’ (breeding season) takes place. The red stags and fallow bucks compete for females (known as hinds and does respectively). At this time, the large males roar, bark and clash antlers in a spectacular way in an attempt to fight off rivals and to attract as many females as possible. The young are born mainly in June, and are hidden by their mothers amongst the bracken and long grass. Females and their young are very vulnerable and sensitive to disturbance at this time Herds of red and fallow deer roam freely within much of the park. The herds are culled in November to keep numbers manageable and the park population healthy. The British Deer Society and the Deer Initiative of England and Wales, who are regarded as the main welfare organizations dealing with the welfare and management of deer nationally, recognize that parkland deer numbers must be managed and that removal of some of the deer is
44 d e c e m b e r 2 0 1 1
necessary each year to keep populations at acceptable levels. The keeping of deer in enclosed English parkland has a long heritage. Although many ancient parks were originally maintained for hunting purposes, in recent times it is recognised that the deer herds of the Royal Parks in London are an integral part of the parks’ ecosystem, as well as being a valuable amenity and educational feature. These parkland deer are wild animals, which are not regularly shepherded or handled; they are left to breed normally and to establish normal social behaviour. All deer parks have a maximum capacity of deer numbers, which must not be exceeded to avoid problems of disease and damage to the natural environment (the complex ecosystems for which Richmond Park is notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, National Nature Reserve and a European Special Area of Conservation, being of particular importance). The deer are wild animals, so never try to touch or feed them. Always keep a respectful distance, especially if you have a dog. You can adopt a deer in Richmond Park http://www.royalparksfoundation.org/support/ foundation/foundation_adopt_new.cfm When you become an adopter, you’ll receive a certificate of thanks, postcard, factsheet and a badge pin. An adoption makes an unusual gift and is a great way to mark a special occasion! As well as deer, a range of other mammals lives in the park, though they may not be as obvious. These include Fox, Rabbit, Shrew, Mice and Vole. Unfortunately the Brown Hare, which was once common in the Park, has vanished as a consequence of increased disturbance. The Park’s diverse landscape, abundant insects and plentiful tree roost sites are good habitat for bats. There are recent records of at least nine species including all 3 species of Pipistrelle, Noctule, Serotine, Brown Long-eared and Daubenton’s bats. www.royalparks.org.uk

mare moto I
magine a place where you can eat a yummy plate of exquisite Italian food with a bar flowing with the finest selection of drinks and then dance the night away in the bustling nightclub - say hello to Luigi Ferrara’s Mare Moto on the King’s Road. The experienced restaurateur fell in love with the area when he first laid his eyes on the seductive stretch of road in 1973 after arriving in London. The 55-year-old finally got the chance to open up his restaurant three years ago and went on to design and redevelop the premises with his contractor friend, Alex Ross, to bring, as Luigi puts it, that touch of L.A to the King’s Road. “After owning two restaurants in Los Angeles I wanted to bring that same glamour and sunshine to the area - a place that offers it all, with fine Italian dining in modern surroundings combined with the glam
and glitz of the famous King’s Road. These two ingredients mixed together is a joy to behold and we have exploded onto the fashionable Chelsea circuit,” said Mare Moto director Luigi. The cooking is as innovative as the ambiance with traditional homely Italian cuisine being given a modern twist by head chef Piero La Barbera. Dishes such as his tender veal scaloppini marinated in limoncello herb and crusted sea bass served with sun dried tomatoes and Sambuca sauce provide new, stimulating taste combinations whilst also satisfying the appetite. For the traditionalists among you- don’t fret!- as you can still get hold of a wholesome plate of spaghetti carbonara or Bolognese and risotto. What’s more, the comprehensive wine list is bound to please connoisseurs worldwide. Luigi, a wine appassionato, has brought his

latest batch of vino to Fulham after his summer escape to Tuscany with the Tignanello, Sassicaia and Ornellaia bottles. In addition, Mare Moto has just launched their own House Blanc white and red coming from the vineyards of Abruzzo. With nightclubs Public and Embargo in close proximity, it really is a hub for partygoers who are spoilt for choice now that Mare Moto is in the mix. This unique combination of fine dining restaurant and fashionable nightclub oozes elegance and style - with famous faces seen frequenting the establishment including Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton as well as London singer, Plan B, and international DJ David Guetta. The Best
Hot Chocolate in London Do you remember fondly the milkiness of the cocoa at bedtime? There are a growing, number of hot chocolate specialists in the capital, and one of them is sure to offer your own brand of liquid pleasure! to feed your addiction by selling powder to go! Cocomaya
3 Porchester Place W2 & 12 Connaught St W2 & Unit 10, 186 Pavilion Road, SW1 Cocomaya is another bakery/ patisserie/ chocolatier where everything is handmade. They’ve scoured the world for rare and fine cocoa beans to use in their creations and they’re not afraid of mixing it up a little by adding flavours. And not just caramel, giner and raspberry, they also do sour cherry chocs, lavender and cardamon. On the hot choc side they err towards the French style, serving it in tiny gilt cups sans sugar, which are sipped by the smart set in their pretty store. Artisan du Chocolat

198 Ebury Street, Belgravia & 10 Paved Court, Richmond William Curley is a man who knows chocolate. His chocs, pastries and opulent deserts are both beautiful looking and beautiful to eat. So it is no surprise that his hot chocolates are pretty special as well. They use Amedei Toscano chocolate flakes which are 70% cocoa, served with a ratio of about one part chocolate to four parts hot milk – with a little froth on top. With a bit of extra milk on the side in case it’s just too chocolatey for you. Paul A Young 33 Camden Passage, N1 & 20 Royal Exchange, Threadneedle Street, EC3 & 143 Wardour Street, W1. A standard a cup of Paul A Young hot chocolate is made from a blend of 70% dark chocolate, additional cocoa powder (100%) and organic, unrefined muscovado sugar. All they add to that is hot water, as Mr. Young’s theory is that the chocolate has cocoa butter in it so there’s plenty of fat there and you don’t need more. 89 Lower Sloane St SW1 & 81 Westbourne Grove, W11, Selfridges W1 & Borough Market SE1. By all accounts this was one of the first of the new breed of French style chocolatiers in London. You can smell a rich, sweetness that tells you that they’re making chocolate on the premises with also hot chocolates using traditional 70% flakes, or flavours like salted caramel, mole or matcha. One of their latest creations are their ‘chocolate dippers’ which is a wooden spoon around which chocolate has been encased. All you do is heat the milk and stir them in, which is an easy way to have a good hot chocolate experience at home. They come in different flavours, sea salted caramel being the classic.

Indulgence rarely comes more easily than this: for a luscious chocolate drink, simply dissolve one of Melt’s chocolate blocks in a cup of hot milk - and voila! The stylishly wrapped blocks come in several different flavours including Venezuela Dark, Milk Madagascar, Caribbean Single, Columbia Single and Four Mixed Origin Dark. Theobroma Cacao
43 Turnham Green Terrace, W4 1RG Hopefully this far down in this article you’ll have learned that one hot chocolate is not like another, and in the case of Tehobroma Cacao they have ten of their own for you to taste before you even consider going to another store. The ‘house blend’ is 62% coco and is made with a mix of dark and milk chocolate and smells a little of vanilla. They whisk the flakes into the milk for each batch. Which ever flavour you choose, and the ginger and chilli options are some of their most popular, you’ll get a free truffle on the side! Panettone & Pandoro During the Christmas season, these are the two most popular yeast cakes served. Originally, Panettone, the dome shaped cake made with butter, eggs, raisins and candied peel was invented and produced in Milan, while Pandoro was baked in a special star shaped mould & dusted with powdered sugar and came from Verona. Traditionally Italians eat panettone at breakfast with coffee, between meals with Marsala wine, and after dinner with spumante. Pandoro is more often sliced and served with a sauce. Both are an ideal treat for Christmas.

A history of regents STREET
n 1811 when King George III stepped down, his fashionable son became the Prince Regent, ruling in his father’s place. One of his first acts was to hire the architect John Nash to create a new, formal processional way from the Prince Regent’s palace, Carlton House in Pall Mall to Regents Park. Carlton House no longer exists but it was sited approximately at the point where Pall Mall and Waterloo Place meet. It was Nash’s vision to create a wide, imperious boulevard with sweeping curves. This took over a decade in planning and construction, cutting through the existing network of tiny streets. The result, with the impressive curve of the Quadrant and the formation of Piccadilly and Oxford Circuses, was a masterpiece of town planning. Never before had any part of London been so thoroughly redeveloped with such thoroughness. The actual area of construction was much more than just Regent Street, it also took in the surrounding areas and roads North of Marylebone Road such as Albany Street. Some say it was the first purpose built shopping street in the world. Part of the original Street were Quadrant Colonnades, a covered walkway, which was demolished in 1848 as they became a favourite place for working girls to ply their trade hidden from direct light and proved unpopular with shop keepers who said it blocked their light. But Regent Street soon became the centre of London’s fashionable social and commercial activity throughout much of the nineteenth century. At the end of the century rebuilding had begun, and from 1904, the street was completely rebuilt on the existing plan to designs by leading architects of the
66 d e c e m b e r 2 0 1 1
day being Reginald Blomfield, Norman Shaw and others. By the end of the 19th century, fashions in shopping had changed and the original buildings were unsuitable for their purpose. They were small and old fashioned, and consequently they were restricting trade. In the Edwardian era, department stores were the principal commercial aspiration. Dickins & Jones, Garrard & Co., Swan and Edgar, Hamleys and Liberty & Co. date from this period although only the last two are still there. As the 99-year leases came to an end, Regent Street was redeveloped from 1895 under the control of the Office of Woods, Forests and Land Revenues (now the Crown Estate). The work was delayed by the Great War and it was not until 1927 that the completion was celebrated, with King George V and Queen Mary driving in state along its length. Bars and shops including the Café Royal have hosted talents such as TS Elliot and Oscar Wilde. The buildings escaped unscathed during World War I although the Nash Terraces were demolished. One of the oldest existing establishments is the The Café Royal which was opened in 1865. Every building in Regent Street is protected as a Listed Building, at least Grade II status, and together they form the Regent Street Conservation Area. All Souls Church
All Souls Church, Langham Place, at the top of Regent Street, is a church with a distinctive circular portico surmounted by a stone spire. Completed in 1823 and consecrated in 1824, All Souls is the only surviving building in Regent Street that was designed by John Nash.

1895 1895 Hamleys
Hamleys is named after William Hamley, who founded a toy shop called “Noah’s Ark” at 231 High Holborn in 1760. A branch at 200 Regent Street was opened in 1881, and the Holborn branch was destroyed by fire in 1901 and was relocated. In 1938, Queen Mary, consort of George V of the United Kingdom, gave Hamleys a Royal Warrant. During World War II, the Regent Street store was bombed five times. In 1955 Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom gave the company a second Royal Warrant as a “Toys and Sports Merchant” Hamleys moved its flagship store to its current address at 188 196 Regent Street in 1981. It claims to be the largest toy shop in the world. Café Royal
The Café Royal, located at 68 Regent Street in the Quadrant, opened in 1865 and became an institution of London high society. The present building, by Sir Reginald Blomfield, dates from 1928 and is grade 2 listed. The Café Royal sadly closed in December 2008, as part of Crown Estate plans to redevelop this part of Regent Street. Crown Estate redevelopment today
All of Regent Street, apart from two blocks at the northern end is owned by the Crown Estate. In more recent times, the Crown Estate has embarked on a major redevelopment programme in Regent Street and some of its side streets. Early 20th century offices, which typically have many corridors and small individual offices, are being replaced. Some of the smaller shops are being replaced with larger units. The largest element of the plan is the reconstruction of the Quadrant at the southern end of the street close to Piccadilly Circus. In addition to shops and offices, a five star hotel and a small number of flats will be created here. There is a yearly Regent Street Festival when the street is closed to traffic for the day. The Christmas light displays are a London tradition dating since 1948, when the Regent Street Association decorated the street with Christmas trees. Lighting was not allowed until 1949, following lifting of wartime restrictions, and the first full lighting display was in 1953. There is a different display every year, switched on at an opening ceremony in the first week of November. december2011

THE HISTORY
Fortnum & Mason OF
i
n 1705 Hugh Mason had a small shop in St James’s Market and a spare room in his house. The Fortnum family came to London from Oxford as high-class builders in the wake of the Great Fire, helping to establish the St James’ and Mayfair areas as the most fashionable in London. William Fortnum climbed another rung by taking a post as footman in Queen Anne’s household....and the room at Mr Mason’s. The Royal Family’s insistence on having new candles every night meant a lot of half-used wax for an enterprising footman to sell on at a profit - so while the Queen’s wages paid the rent, William’s enlightened sideline melted down into enough to start a respectable business. The rest, as they say, is grocery. The explosion in trade was creating a middle class with more disposable income and more than ever to spend it on. International trade expanded at a dramatic rate as new routes were discovered and transport became more reliable, with London at the hub of everything - making it a magnet for the world. Fortnum & Mason was at the centre of this whirlwind. Until the General Post Office came into being, the business of sending and receiving mail was open to anyone - and Fortnum’s grasped the opportunity in 1794. It had letterboxes for paid and unpaid letters which were picked up six times a day (this was before stamps, and the recipient usually paid the tab). Soldiers and sailors, already among the company’s best customers, received a discount. The arrangement drew all sorts of traffic to the store to be tempted by the already magnificent window and interior displays. This arrangement lasted until 1839, when the GPO was founded a year before the Penny Black with its bust of a youthful Victoria. Having been integral to morale since the Peninsular War, Fortnum & Mason - the foremost establishment in a “nation of shopkeepers” - helped the army march on its stomach to final victory over Napoleon.Honey, dried fruits, spices and above all preserves were ideal for the campaigning soldier and were advertised as such in The Times. The handsome packaging first helped, then hindered, as everyone at the front caught on to the rare treats contained inside. Fortnum & Mason has always been an enlightened employer, understanding that if shopping there is to remain a unique pleasure, their greatest assets need looking after. Richard Fortnum’s left a fortune in 1846 by way of a gift of £1,500 (around £500,000 today). This is just one in a long list of similar examples: a few years later, staff at Fortnum’s were the only members of the
68 d e c e m b e r 2 0 1 1
1950’s new Shopworkers’ Trade Union who were unafraid to have their names published in the press, being actively supported by the firm. Driven by the passion of Prince Albert, the Great Exhibition of 1851 was London’s tribute to the Industrial Revolution. Fortnum & Mason won first prize as importers of dried fruits and dessert goods but their influence on the nation’s habits was by then acknowledged to be far greater. Pre-fabrication was all the rage: the Exhibition’s home, Crystal Palace, was manufactured in a factory and then assembled on site, and Fortnum’s led a similar trend in ready-to-eat luxury foods such as “poultry and game in aspic, hard-boiled eggs in forcemeat (the famous “Scottish egg”), dry and green turtle, boar’s head, truffles, mangoes all decorated and prepared so as to require no cutting.” Charles Dickens wrote of one Epsom Derby; “Look where I will.... at Ascot, the Boat Race, Henley, Wimbledon, Lord’s and Twickenham - meant that by the middle of its second century Fortnum’s had become the out-of-household name. In 1854 the story of the Charge of the Light Brigade gripped the nation. The Crimean was the first war to be covered by on-the-spot reporters, so for once the home front was aware of the soldiers’ appalling conditions. The Queen took a personal interest, sending Fortnum’s an order “to dispatch without delay to Miss Nightingale in Scutari a huge consignment of concentrated beef tea” after the scandal of the hospitals had become known in England. Every ship that sailed for the Crimea carried cases labelled Fortnum & Mason. Many officers wrote begging to leave it off to discourage pilferers - by now an epidemic, sparked by the sight of the name. Since the middle of the century Fortnum & Mason had been the leader in tinned goods. This made them the obvious first stop for a young entrepreneur lugging five cases of samples from the USA in 1886. Recognising a future staple they took them all,
introducing the mighty baked bean to Britain for the first time. Charles Fortnum, grandson of the original William, had left Royal service in 1788 to concentrate on the business, an event noted on film in The Madness of King George. He was not alone in finding the atmosphere at the palace challenging, but at least life was easier than for a French aristocrat at the time. Eleven years into the new century the Regency period began, with beaux of all kinds flocking to Fortnum’s for snuff and sustenance during the hectic social whirl. Throughout the reigns of George, William and Victoria, Fortnum & Mason grew in influence and stature every year. 1914, World War One and all staff serving in France and Flanders were guaranteed to keep their jobs on their return - which a surprising number managed. In the meantime, the women of London kept things buzzing along brilliantly - while the usual quantity of tuck found its way to the trenches. Fortnum’s is the only store to have a department dedicated to ‘Expeditions’, at a time when huge consignments of home comforts accompanied the English into the heart of Africa and up the Himalayas, right down to such essentials as butter knives and sauce boats. The 1922 Everest expedition, for example, simply couldn’t start without 60 tins of quail in foie gras and four dozen bottles of champagne. The 1933 team, including a young Tensing Norgay, was dismayed to find several of the delicacies replaced by stones - presumably by inquisitive customs officers. Only the Stiltons remained - their covers pierced but the fragrant contents, clearly not to the Nepalese nose, left untouched. In warmer climes Howard Carter’s Tutankhamun expedition used Fortnum’s wine boxes to help catalogue the rare antiquities, including a statue of the boy-king as Aten, the Sun - representing tacit approval from yet another monarch. 1925 was a turning point in the expansion of the store, with extensive refurbishment, new departures & departments. Ladies’ fashions, children’s clothes, kitchenware and perfumes joined the traditional fare on offer as the company embraced the Jazz Age with gusto. King George V’s Jubilee in 1935 drew so many princes and potentates from all corners of the Empire that Fortnum & Mason, having long imported the best from all the continents, created a special department to accommodate their dietary requirements. To whom else might one possibly have turned? 1940’s and a mainstay of the Officers’ Mess since before Wellington, Fortnum’s opened a special Officers’ Department dedicated to providing a respite from bully beef. As well as comestibles it dealt in insect powder, exotic cigarettes and anything else the modern soldier might require, such as an EPNS tip for a bayonet (so much more elegant for spreading Gentlemen’s Relish at El Alamein) and the ‘Spork’, the combination knife-and fork which, naturally, came silver-plated. Arbiters of decorum even in wartime, the company also patented the ‘Fortknee’, a short stocking to cover the knees and lower thighs of lady drivers in the services. Later in 1964 saw a new landmark added to the front of the store - the famous Fortnum’s clock, with bells from the same foundry as Big Ben. Every fifteen minutes a selection of airs is played on eighteen bells, and once an hour Messrs F&M themselves appear to check that standards are being upkept. december2011

Christmas Walks
L
eave the Christmas crackers and Monopoly until later and instead jump on a Boris bike into the heart of London for an intriguing guided walk all about the frothy-haired Samuel Pepys and the genius that was Charles Dickens. Wrap up warm and meet Ed and Richard III at 11am on Christmas morning by the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square to see a sleepy Westminster through the eyes of the eccentric 16th century diarist. The walk is based around a personal and insightful diary entry jotted down on 25th December 1660 (we reckon Pepys would have loved Twitter). If you want a nice long lay 70 d e c e m b e r 2 0 1 1
in opt for the Charles Dickens walk in the afternoon instead. Starting again by the tree in Trafalgar Square at 2pm, you’ll hear charming titbits and tales about England’s most festive author and, of course, plenty of Christmas trivia as well. Discover how England’s capital city influenced Dickens’ writing while exploring historical pockets of central London. There’s the hidden Georgian alleyway; the sole surviving piece of the Victorian underworld and the bustling Covent Garden, where David Copperfield bought flowers and Pip spent a night in the Hummums Hotel. Finish with a cycle ride around St James Park and Green Park to build up
an appetite for lashings of turkey and Christmas pudding in brandy cream. In the run up to Christmas there will be Charles Dickens’s Christmas Carol & Seasonal Traditions! All the delights and delicacies of a London Victorian Christmas with Charles Dickens’ famous story A Christmas Carol as your route map and inspiration. Deck the streets of London with balls of jolly. Scrooge and Marley and the Cratchits... they’re all there. This was where Dickens’ imagination took wing and where the characters did their thing. And as you make their acquaintance they’ll spice things with warming

andmade’ is a word that is often overused but no other pen manufacturer rivals the levels of craftsmanship that go into making a solid silver Yard-O-Led pen or pencil. It takes more than 2,000 strikes by hand to create the hand-chased ‘Victorian’ finish of just one pen, eight different processes to make its clip and a final moment of patience to individually number each one. Compromise is never an option at Yard-O-Led – it is typical of the brand that the nibs of the fountain pens are made from solid 18ct gold – making them wonderfully smooth and forgiving to write with – only to be silver plated so that they remain true to the purity of the original design. Whichever hallmarked pen or pencil you choose it will come with a lifetime guarantee. Buying a yard-O-Led pen says a great deal about how much you appreciate craftsmanship, individuality and the finer things in life. Because of all the skill and time that goes into creating each pen, it instils an extraordinary sense of luxury – and almost never goes unnoticed. Each Yard-O-Led pen and pencil has a lifetime guarantee and is individually numbered and hallmarked – making it unique. The distinctive hand-chased Victorian finish, available on several designs, requires at least 2,000 strikes to create the exquisite pattern. The team of highly skilled silversmiths are based in workshops within Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. All pencils contain 12 three-inch leads – amounting to a ‘yard o led’. DR. ARIEL HAUS
London’s Most Talked About Brazilian Doctor
Dr Ariel Haus Is One Step Ahead Leaving Cellulite Behind As He Unveils VelaShape II™ In London
D
r Ariel Haus is delighted to be amongst the first in London to unveil the VelaShape II. Already a prominent request by patients at both his London & Rio de Janeiro clinics, Dr Haus is now able to offer patients an even better experience and results. The VelaShape II combines vacuum suction, mechanical rollers, and heating through infrared light and bi-polar RF energy to result in a reduction in cellulite and the contouring of lipodystrophies (unwanted bumps/bulges). The treatment is non-invasive and patients achieve an average reduction of 1 inch post treatment, this can range between 0.5 to 3 inches. Cellulite needs no introduction and the VelaShape II offers a gradual improvement of cellulite in treated areas, firmer and tighter skin surfaces are also reported. 4-6 sessions are initially recommended over the space of just over a week. Maintenance treatments are done once a month. Treatment is safe and effective. How does it work?
VelaShape II combines gentle light and radio frequency energies (elōs™) with mechanical rollers and vacuum suction to manipulate 80 d e c e m b e r 2 0 1 1
Dr Haus has regular columns in UK magazines and is often consulted by manufacturers of leading skin products and brands to offer insight and his opinion owing to his extensive experience. the superficial fat tissue layer that contributes to cellulite. The heat from the light and RF energies increases metabolism of this fatty layer and shrinks the size of fat cells. The mechanical rollers and vacuum suction act on
the blood vessels to increase circulation to the local area, as well as massaging the skin to achieve a smoother, less dimpled surface appearance. Dr Ariel Haus is registered as a medical practitioner in Brazil, the United Kingdom
and Portugal. The specific noninvasive cosmetic treatments that Dr. Haus offers are: ✱ Skin peels to remove the effects of sun damage and rejuvenate the skin, ✱ Treatments using Botulinum Toxin to address wrinkles and frown lines, ✱ Dermal fillers to add volume and smooth out deeper facial lines, ✱ Skin rejuvenation and minor procedures using ablative and non-ablative lasers, ✱ Hair removal using laser technology, ✱ Body sculpting, cellulite and fat removal with Velashape, the non-surgical liposuction, ✱ Scar treatment using Dermaroller, ✱ Carboxytherapy which can be used for a variety of conditions including stretch marks and dark rings under the eyes. ✱ General Dermatology Clinic, including treatment for acne, eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, warts and nail diseases. In addition to his private clinic in Harley Street, London, Dr. Haus also works in the NHS and by arrangement is also able to see patients in Rio de Janeiro. Dr Ariel Haus only uses non-invasive treatments and medicines that have been approved by the relevant regulators in the U.K. In most cases, these procedures have also been approved for use in other countries in Europe and the United States. It’s time for a brow re-model. “Semi-permanent make-up has taken a complete turn, gone are the days of the half moon shape slapped above the eye, we have so many different types of fantastic and natural looking ways to enhance your eyebrow shape from fine hair line strokes to simply filling in patchy eyebrows with a shadow effect. I can create a totally realistic and natural arched brow for both men and women!” As you get older the shape of your face changes and it is very important to move with the times, it’s amazing how many women still over pluck their eyebrows into the shape they had in the nineties or even eighties. The area becomes over traumatised therefore making it impossible to achieve that full lush look you had in your 20’s. As the brows are such

The colour of your lip is matched to your complexion and the results are lip transforming! The common question and fear my clients have is “will I get the trout pout?” My answer is emphatically no, no and no again. Kay Greveson RGN BA (HONS) Independent prescriber
london’s BOTOX queen
here is an increasing trend for both men and women to seen non-surgical, non-invasive methods for achieving a younger look. There are various options available that fall into this category, including wrinkle relaxing injections such as Botox®, dermal fillers and skin peels, to name just a few. Erika Moore recently visited Sister Kay Greveson at her clinic in Hampstead after becoming increasingly frustrated by her lines and wrinkles. Here she outlines her experience. I work in a job that involves dealing with clients on a daily basis, so my appearance is important. I was increasingly aware of the lines on my forehead and between my eyes. I always felt as though I looked angry, and older than I was, even though I am only in my early 30’s. I approached Sister Kay Greveson her clinic within Aquarius Spa, Hampstead, about two months ago as I had been recommended to her by a friend. I was initially nervous as I have never had any sort of treatment like that before. I was worried about having the injections and what I would look like afterwards but Kay put my mind at ease immediately. We had a detailed chat about what results I wanted from the treatment; she took a medical history and some photographs. Kay explained that Botox® is a safe, naturally occurring protein that works by blocking nerve

She gave me the option of using a ‘numbing’ local anaesthetic cream, which I took. Despite being nervous, I did not find the procedure bad at all. Kay talked me through each step and made sure I was comfortable throughout. She was very gentle and I hardly felt the injections; it certainly wasn’t as bad as I had imagined. She explained that
it would take between 2 and 14 days for the full results to be visible and advised me to come back after this time so she could check on the result and have a ‘dose adjustment’ of treatment if required. It was so exciting to see the lines disappearing little by little each day and I don’t think I’ve ever looked in the mirror so much as I did in those first 2 weeks! In the end I did not need more treatment as I was more than pleased with the results. I have a natural look and still have facial expression but no lines!! Botox® is not permanent, lasting only three to four months, after which, the lines that were there prior to treatment slowly return. I will definitely have it again when the time comes as it has made me feel so much more confident with my appearance. I feel that I look more relaxed and don’t have an ‘angry’ look from frowning all of the time.

Have you ever sat and stared at an aquarium? You find yourself relaxed. Lost in the moment simply looking at the bright, beautifully coloured fish. Then you wonder how much money and effort it would take to get one for yourself ? Then you realise that maybe it’s not so relaxing anymore!

ntroducing an aquarium for people who want to keep fish - but think it’s too much work. Say hello to a biOrb. In 1999 Reef One, the manufacturers of biOrb ripped up the rule book and started again. They set out on a mission to make better aquariums. Reef One said “We wanted them to be so good, that you’d want to tell your friends about them”.
So how did they do it?
They started with the filter. In many traditional aquariums the filter is on the side or at the top. In a biOrb it’s at the bottom, which might seem unimportant until you realise that fish waste sinks. Think about it, there’s no point vacuuming your ceiling when the dirt is on the floor. The filter itself takes about 40 seconds to change and only needs doing about once a month. Water oxygenation was the next challenge. See the tube in the middle of the aquarium? It has an airline running into it. Air is blown through the base of a biOrb up to the surface.
This has two main benefits, it 100% oxygenates* the water and it drives a circular water flow making sure all the water passes through the filter. How’s it made? biOrbs are not made from glass, they’re made from acrylic. Acrylic is ten times stronger than glass. It’s also clearer. Acrylic has a transparency rate of 93% making it the clearest material known. Glass only allows 70% of light to pass through and thick glass always has a green tint. The final challenge was lighting. In a biOrb, the lighting is always built in – you’d be forgiven for not even knowing it was there - that is, until you switch it on. In the LIFE range (shown) the lighting is fully automatic. There is a sunrise, daylight, sunset and a blue moonlight. The aquarium lighting actually changes throughout the day. All in all, the biOrb is a low maintenance aquarium for people who’d like to keep fish, but think it’s too much work. Visit www.reef-one.com * University of Vetinary Medicine in Hannover.

ary and her team of interior designers offer a combined experience of more than 35 years and have worked on projects ranging from a high tech cinema room to landmark period properties. Here they create a scheme of understated luxury in Richmond, West London. If you would like to discuss a potential project or are interested in any of the items featured you can contact Mary on (0)207 823 3355 As the cost of moving continues to rise and desirable property remains in short supply you may wish to consider how you can adapt the space you already own. Across the Capital people are doing just that and digging down into their basements or transforming their lofts. A case in point is this 1930’s loft conversion that is in the process of being transformed from a previous unutilised space into a super comfortable bedroom with separate wardrobe and shower areas. The bedroom measures 5m x 5.5 m and the dressing room is 5m x 2.6 m. In line with our client’s brief we have created a calm contemporary scheme with a masculine feel. Velvet, silk and wool fabrics have been used to deliver a truly luxurious retreat. The cushions on the bed are to be made up in a stripe claret coloured silk which complement the roman blinds in a matching geometric fabric. Giving further accent a black and cream geometric patterned velvet will cover the seat of the chaise. The large padded headboard is to be covered in herringbone tweed. The statement piece within the room is Bill Cleynderts award winning Herbst writing desk in Macassar ebony. Moving into the dressing room the bespoke wardrobe has been carefully laid out after consultation with our client. The space saving footstools will be covered in circular
patterned velvet. A full height smoked glass panel between the shower and dressing area provides privacy while visually freeing up space. Underfoot in both areas we have specified a luxurious deep cut pile cream bound carpet with a contrast border in claret. With this project we are working with generous proportions. If your space is limited, consider the following; ✱ A neutral palette will reflect light and make a room feel larger. Add interest with contrasting fabric textures and controlled splashes of colour. ✱ Reflective surfaces including gloss coated wallpapers and wood finishes are on trend in contemporary interiors. Utilise these
and they will add a sense of airiness. A large oversized mirror will reflect and provide light. ✱ Look for furniture with clean simple lines to increase the visual sense of space.
by cluttering it up. Stick to simple spot lights and invest in eye-catching wall and table lamps. Floor to ceiling cupboards will also enhance the feeling of height. Keep door furniture simple and streamlined.
✱ If you have a low ceiling height don’t draw attention to it
✱ To even out proportions choose low level furniture.

ne redeeming feature of the antiques trade is that every so often something turns up that at first glance, which is usually enough for a hardened old pro, appears to be one thing but on closer inspection has so many different features that it is difficult to evaluate precisely. One such piece is the small upright chest of drawers decorated with Wedgwood ceramic plaques, illustrated here. It has a distinctly French feel to it and it is indeed an English version of the French original, which would have seven drawers rather than six. It came into being during the mid-18th century, a luxury item for a luxurious age. Essentially an item for the boudoir its seven drawers held clean lingerie for each day of the week. That begs the question why the English version only had six drawers; did we all go grubby for a day? The form was quickly adopted in late Regency and Victorian England on a commercial scale after The Duke of Wellington is reputed to have favoured it as being most compact and convenient while on campaign. From then on and still today the English model is known as a Wellington chest and usually made of good old mahogany. Sometimes the drawers are flanked by two columns, one of which is hinged and lockable when closed thus serving to secure all the drawers. But the one illustrated is very different. My first thoughts were that it might be to a design by Henry Holland, 1745 – 1806 the architect and iconic designer to the Prince of Wales. Irrespective of our being at war we maintained a strong artistic link with France and one of Holland’s favourite themes was the
96 d e c e m b e r 2 0 1 1
John Bly its seven drawers held clean lingerie for each day of the week. classic French style of which this could be a fine example. However, on closer inspection it crosses the boundaries of several collecting fields and manufacturing details. The silver beaded mounts were a novelty that became a most fashionable motif during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The inlay of once bright coloured leaves on thin threads hang from faux bamboo style tubes inlaid onto harewood – sycamore dyed with oxide of iron - are reversed on the lower section. The use of ivory for the John Linnell (cabinet maker 1729 – 96) shape feet was ahead of its time and all the timbers, the marquetry and the form of extended front columns are all elements attributable to Henry Holland. But now it starts to get complicated. The backboard is secured with traditional hand cut screws, while the back edge of each drawer bottom is secured with machine cut screws. Now the immediate reaction to that is that it must be 19th century, because it is generally accepted that machine made screws were not introduced until the 1830’s. However we now know that the first truly modern screw-cutting lathe was likely constructed by J. Ramsden in 1775. Twenty
years later in France, M. Senot created a screw-cutting lathe capable of industrial-level production, and in 1800 Henry Maudslay created a screwcutting lathe that became the international standard machine. These late-18thcentury screw-cutting lathes represented the breakthrough development of the technology but cabinetmakers used them with caution to begin with, combining the use of hand made where they might be seen and the new machine made where not. Another guide to 18th or 19th century is the thickness of the veneers. Prior to the early 1800s all veneers were cut by hand and were rarely less than 1/16th of an inch thick. The development of machinery capable of cutting veneer to a paper thickness by the 1830’s revolutionised the furniture industry and gives us strong evidence for dating. The veneers on this chest are both thick and thin. Thus far we are in mind to say a date for this circa 1830, but a pair of almost identical form and decoration with seven drawers and unquestionably French are housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum and are dated at circa1870. We shall now begin to examine the silver mounts and the Wedgwood
plaques. I will let you know. Another nice surprise recently was the discovery of two miniature portraits, or rather the discovery that one of them was of General Robert Monckton (1726 – 82). We don’t know who the other one is…yet. They are monochrome in a medium known as plumbago. This describes a particular method of drawing with finely pointed pieces of graphite onto vellum, and although it was first developed in the 17th century examples from this period are rare, and it is from the 18th century that most are found today. The fact that there is a name of a famous person on the back of a picture can mean nothing at all, but in this case there are sufficient portraits of General Monckton to be able to identify him as the subject of this miniature. He was an officer of considerable note in the British Army and a colonial administrator in British North America. He established a most distinguished military and political career and was responsible for organising the deportation of the Arcadians from the then British controlled Nova Scotia in the early part of the Seven Years War. In 1759 General James Wolfe chose Monckton to be his 2nd I.C. for the assault on Quebec and so significant was his military role during this part of his life that the city of Moncton, New Jersey is so named in his honour. So what at first glance looked like just another 18th century miniature portrait of an officer turned out to be a history lesson, for me anyway. Always good. John Bly Est Antiques 1891. ounded 20 years ago, The Natural Wood Floor Company is a family run business which has grown to become one of the leading wood flooring manufacturers and suppliers in Europe. Trading began in 1991 selling reclaimed flooring from demolished buildings in the capital. As the company’s reputation grew, the demand for their products increased. Quick to respond, the company soon moved into manufacturing,

The clock is ticking
The Government backed Feed-In Tariffs scheme that pays you for generating electricity is secured for 25 years, tax free and index linked. The revised tariffs still offer you a high return on your investment, typically in excess of 3 times more than a comparable low risk bond or cash ISA investment. Install before the 1st April 2012 to avoid costly alterations to your property in accordance with the new Government guidelines that have been proposed.

London basements The only way is down
W
ith every square foot of floor space at a premium within London, basement construction has become the most popular form of home expansion. When you have either expanded to the limits of your property above ground, or have been refused planning for expansion above, a basement is the obvious solution. Maggie Smith of London Basement tells me that it is no longer a second choice for expanding homes, it has become the first choice for home owners and indeed for purchasers of new properties. It is the only way to gain such a large amount of space, indeed, a whole new floor level! London Basement is the original basement company, who have been building basements for over 15 years, who have to date built a remarkable 1000 basements. Maggie Smith told us that they have seen a steady increase in the construction of basements over the years

service, with all staff trained to the highest standards, Research has shown that there are many new companies springing up, stating that they have the experience and history to be able to take on these highly specialised projects, but please make sure to do your research into the track record of any company
It is the only way to gain such a large amount of space, indeed, a whole new floor level! and they are generally working on an average of 30 – 40 sites at any time. The reasons are simple and obvious, the improvement in lifestyle, a basement is generally cheaper than moving, taking into account the larger house, stamp duty and moving costs, the added living space is a perfect investment in your home where properties have achieved a 30% increase in value and when you have invested time and money to create your home and perhaps
your children are settled in local schools, a new basement floor level to improve your lifestyle, makes complete sense. The old concept of dark damp basements has been fully dispelled, as you can see from the portfolio on London Basement’s web site, showing wonderful living and entertainment areas, which I have to admit, fill me with envy. It is also refreshing to find a company that provides a true design, build and project management
you are considering. You are putting the very foundations of your property into their hands, so you need absolute certainty that you are dealing with the very best with the design, engineering and construction expertise necessary to safeguard your home. The truth about filters... Many traditional aquariums have a filter on the side or at the top, but guess what - fish waste sinks. All biOrbs have a filter at the bottom of the aquarium. Put simply, the filter works where there is most to filter. We’ve even made it easy to change. It takes seconds and you only need to do it every four to six weeks.
Everything you’ll need, in one box When you buy a biOrb you’ll get everything you need to start your aquarium. You won’t need to go shopping for any additional parts and you’ll get full instructions to help you on your way.

Easy to look after biOrbs are simple to set up and easy to look after. Now you can enjoy the magic of keeping fish without lots of work.

GEORGE HARRISONS’
DB5 ASTON MARTIN
An Aston Martin ordered by George Harrison in 1965 sold at auction in London for £350,000 after fierce bidding from around the world.
M
anufactured in late 1964, DB5/1896/R was supplied new on January 1st 1965 through Brydor Cars of Brooklands in Surrey to the famous Beatle and had created huge interest when it was put

up for sale at the COYS True Greats Auction held at the Royal Horticultural Halls in Westminster. There was intense bidding in the room and from telephone bidders in the United States and elsewhere. The car was
eventually knocked down to an anonymous Beatle and Aston Martin fan from Houston in Texas who said:” George Harrison would be amazed about all the money his car is going to raise for Christian causes.”
Model and photographer Patti Boyd, who was married to George Harrison when he owned the DB5 was re-united with the car when it was showcased at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London. Chris Routledge, Managing Director at car auction house, COYS said:” There was a battle royal for this car which went for some £150,000.00 over its estimate. The sale saw some £4.5 million pounds worth of cars being sold. It was a fantastic sale with dealers and collectors from all over the world participating. There is also no doubt that many people who in the past invested in stock and shares and now looking to classic cars as a good investment for the future.” A Cord 810 Phaeton owned by Jimmy Page and Duncan Bannatyyne sold for £80,000 and a Mercedes Benz 300 SL Roadster which had been stored in an Edinburgh garage for the last 23 years made £343,000 which was £100,000 over its estimate. A Mercedes Benz 540 K formerly owned by Bernie Ecclestone, which had been estimated at £500,000, sold for £864,000. www.coys.co.uk

it in Greece, the Olympic Flame arrives in the UK on 18th May 2012. Representing peace, unity and friendship, 8,000 inspirational people from around the UK will carry the Olympic Flame as it journeys across Britain between 19th May – 27th July 2012. Nominated by someone they know, it will be their moment to shine, inspiring millions of people watching in their community. Torchbearers will carry the Flame through more than 1,000 cities, towns and villages. The Olympic Flame will come within 10 miles of 95% of people in the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey. It will enable local communities to shine a light on the best their area has to offer – including celebrations of local culture,

breathtaking landscapes and dynamic urban areas. The London 2012 Olympic Torch features 8,000 small cut-out circles, representing the 8,000 inspirational people who will carry it on its journey. The Torch was designed by east Londoners Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, who won the opportunity through a competitive tender run by the London 2012 Organising Committee and the Design Council. The Torch stands 800mm high and weighs 800 grammes, and is made up of an inner and an outer aluminium alloy skin, held in place by a cast top piece and base, perforated by 8,000 circles which run the length of the body of the Torch also offer a unique level of transparency. You can see right to the heart of the Torch
and view the burner system which will keep the Olympic Flame alive on its journey. More than half of the London 2012 Torchbearers are expected to be young people aged as young as 12, so the designers aimed to make the Torch as light as possible. The circles also help ensure heat is quickly dissipated, without being conducted down the handle, and providing extra grip. The triangular-shaped Torch was inspired by a series of ‘threes’ that are found in the history of the Olympic Games and the vision for the Olympic Movement: ✱ The three Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship; ✱ The three words that make the Olympic motto – faster, higher, stronger; ✱ The fact that the UK has hosted the Olympic Games in 1908, 1948 and will host them for the third time in 2012; ✱ The vision for the London 2012 Olympic Games to combine three bodies of work – sport, education and culture. As it makes its way across the UK on a 70-day journey it will bring the excitement of the Games to everyone.
