he internationally renowned BADA Antiques & Fine Art Fair is the only fair exclusive to members of the British Antique Dealers’ Association. As a result, the BADA Fair exhibits an unrivalled range of high quality paintings, furniture, silverware, ceramics, clocks, jewellery, glass & textiles from world-class artists & designers such as Chippendale, Tompion & Turner. Chelsea is one of London’s most affluent commercial and residential districts, with Michelin-starred restaurants, independent boutiques and international power-house luxury brands all situated amidst the Regency houses and tree-lined cobbled streets which recall the area’s rich history. The Duke of York Square just off the King’s Road opened in 2003 and was the largest open space to be created in London for over 20 years. Together with nearby Sloane Street, the Duke of York Square contains many of London’s most revered designer names: Lulu Guinness, Smythson and Jo Malone represent some of the best of British brands, while Cartier, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Hermès bring the area to the international forefront of luxury retail. The area overflows with cultural attractions all situated within a few minute’s walk of the BADA Fair: The Royal Court Theatre

reitling has chosen David Beckham as the face of its Transocean Chronograph Unitime worldtimer watch. The new campaign establishes a long-term partnership between the innovative and historic Swiss brand and one of the world’s most celebrated icons.

Mojave Air & Space Port in California, the striking image shows Beckham standing in front of a private jet wearing his Transocean Chronograph Unitime. Through its long-established ties with aviation, the sky has always been the limit for Breitling – as the brand has proved throughout its history by creating a number of travel watches including the famous Unitime in the 1950s and 60s.

F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3 2 1

F E AT U R E

In the spring of 2012, it took things to the next level by presenting the Transocean Chronograph Unitime. Equipped with the new Manufacture Breitling Calibre B05 featuring a patented mechanism, this world-timer chronograph has asserted itself as the ultimate travel watch thanks to its double disc enabling permanent readings of the time in all 24 timezones, and its ultra-user-friendly crown-operated correction system.

BRINGING THE WORLD TO THE WRIST Breitling reasserted its horological mastery by launching a “world time” chronograph equipped with a new calibre entirely developed and produced in-house. Thanks to its double disc, the Transocean Chronograph Unitime simultaneously and constantly indicates the time in all 24 timezones. An innovative system based on a patented mechanism enables the user, when changing timezone, to adjust all the indications in one smooth and easy move by simply turning the crown. An exceptional new instrument has made its grand entry into the world of exclusive fine mechanisms.

2 2 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

TIME FOR TRAVEL While the chronograph and instruments for professionals have established themselves since 1884 as Breitling’s domain of excellence, travel watches have also played an important role in the history of the brand with the winged B. In sharing the finest hours in the conquest of the skies, Breitling accompanied the boom in air transport and long-distance travel. During the 1950s and 60s, the brand distinguished itself by introducing a sophisticated model named Unitime, a selfwinding “world time” watch that has since become a much sought-after collector’s item. Today, Breitling is further extending its invitation to enjoy travel and performances by combining universal time and the chronograph function within a new model in the Transocean range – a collection reflecting all the refinement and prestige of luxury long-distance journeys. Associating innovative technology with stylish aesthetics, the Transocean Chronograph Unitime is distinguished by its modern, pure lines and the infinite care lavished on the smallest details – such as its dial

bearing a globe pattern. It comes in steel or red gold versions with the city bezel available in several languages. That unmistakable first-class feeling on the wrist.

PERFORMANCE AND COMFORT In creating Calibre 01, the Breitling engineers devised the world’s best chronograph movement. In developing the new Calibre 05, based on the same high-performance architecture, they have also reinvented the world time mechanism by equipping it with an adjustment system boasting unprecedented user friendliness. The Transocean Chronograph Unitime features two mobile discs: a 24-hour disc and a disc bearing the names of 24 cities representing the world’s 24 time-zones. The time shown by the central hands corresponds to that of the time-zone displayed at 12 o’clock. The city disc also bears indications serving to take account of “summer” or daylight saving time (DST). When the user changes timezone, he need only pull out the crown

and turn it forwards or backwards in one-hour increments in order to correct the hours, the city disc and the 24-hour disc in one smooth move. Meanwhile, the calendar is easily adjusted in both directions to the date corresponding to local time. During these manoeuvres, the minute and seconds hands continue turning normally without any loss of precision, and without disturbing any chronograph timing operations in progress. “I’ve always been a long-time admirer of Breitling”, said David Beckham. “As a company they create not only the highest-performance watches but also timeless designs that have inspired generations. It was a natural choice for me to partner with this fantastic brand.”

The bike is expected to fetch somewhere between £40,000 and £60,000 when it rolls onto the auction block at a special sale of sports memorabilia held by Bonhams in Chester on Wednesday 20TH February.

However, the most striking of the new additions is the special shift rod that incorporates some 21 black AA diamonds and a white TW/VS diamond. Rooney said: “I was really excited to have the opportunity to be involved in the design of a unique ‘Wayne Rooney’ Lauge Jensen custom bike. The bike we have designed takes its inspiration from the celebration of my overhead kick against Manchester City last

All the proceeds from the sale will be going to KidsAid, a Danish charitable foundation that helps young people affected by illness.

100 YEARS OF ASTON MARTIN

Aston Martin launches global celebrations marking a century of success

THE LUXURY BRAND IS MARKING THE OFFICIAL ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR OF ITS FOUNDING 100 YEARS AGO.

L

ondon marked the start of a year-long celebration of all things Aston Martin, with a ceremony in Chelsea’s Henniker Mews – the original home of the company that went on to become Aston Martin, founded on 15th January 1913. Joining with the Aston Martin Heritage Trust to unveil a commemorative plaque, the sports car maker is lining up a special centenary edition of its new ultimate GT – the Vanquish – alongside the oldest Aston Martin in existence, A3. The event recalls the day 100 years ago when founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford saw their new automotive venture incorporated as ‘Bamford and

Martin Ltd’. Production of the very first Aston Martin car, known as ‘Coal Scuttle’ commenced soon after. The ‘Aston’ element was inspired by Lionel Martin’s passion for hill climb competitions, in particular the Aston Clinton hill climb in Buckinghamshire. Aston Martin CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez said: “I am proud to be celebrating 100 years of heritage and the best of British craftsmanship. “Aston Martin is known around the world for our leading design combined with advanced technology. Ours is the coolest luxury car brand on the planet and I am looking forward to our second century of building the world’s most desirable sports cars.” F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3 3 1

Speaking at the unveiling, Roger Carey, Chairman of the Aston Martin Heritage Trust said: “It’s fitting, I think, that we have both the newest and oldest Aston Martins in existence here at Henniker Mews, where this remarkable story began 100 years ago. This is where the workshops were first located and the Aston Martin Heritage Trust felt it was important to record the centenary by creating and displaying a plaque commemorating the start of such an iconic car business.” Aston Martin Chairman, David Richards said: “It’s great to be back at the place where it all started. The Aston Martin story reaches a significant milestone in 2013 with our unique heritage and fiercely independent tradition inspiring exciting chapters yet to come. “We look forward to sharing this milestone with our team, our partners, our customers and Aston Martin enthusiasts with events taking place worldwide over the next 12 months.” In the UK, a week-long Aston Martin festival will take place from 15th July to 21st July. Designed to appeal to owners and enthusiasts of the brand, the Centenary Week will include ‘open house’ activities at Aston Martin’s exclusive Gaydon headquarters, including factory-based events and driving tours and will culminate in a 1,000-guest ‘birthday party’ on Saturday 20th July and a spectacular Centenary gathering in Central London on Sunday 21st July. This highlight of the centenary celebrations will be held in partnership with the Aston Martin Heritage Trust and the Aston Martin Owners Club and will feature 100 of the brand’s most iconic cars in a multi-million pound timeline display. The event will also see one of the largest gatherings of Aston Martins in the 100-year history of the great British marque. In addition, appearances at iconic events throughout 2013 including Nürburgring 24-Hours, Silverstone Classic, Villa D’Este, Le Mans 24-Hours and Pebble Beach will ensure that the celebration is truly global. 3 2 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

Exam tips from Isadora Platoni, year 10, Sydenham High School “Although exams are a scary prospect I feel well prepared for my GCSEs. The school teaches us how to revise in year 7 and 8 through lessons given by my school’s learning strategies department. We are taught how to make ‘revision products’ which are easily remembered summaries of the things we have to revise. These can be mindmaps, file cards, posters, games - whatever suits our learning style. We learn these techniques early so we have plenty of time to practise them before GCSEs and the teachers include these approaches in their lessons. I use a lot of mindmaps because they show connections between ideas. We also get given a Revision Guide before each set of exams which is a booklet that lists all the things we have to revise. I find this helpful because it helps me to plan my revision.”

8 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

From my experience these would be my top tips for exams:Break your revision up into chunks each day Have a plan Start early and make revision products when you have a class test. “My mum came to a revision seminar for parents here when I was in year 7 so she helped me in years 7&8.” For more information about Sydenham High School 19 Westwood Hill, London SE26 6BL Call 020 8557 7000 www.sydenhamhighschool.gdst.net

Why choosing an independent school leads to top university places words Peter B Hamilton, Headmaster of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School

I

t is getting inreasingly difficult to get into the top universities - competition is fierce with thousands of students applying for each place. It is worth taking a step back to review how parents can best support their children through the daunting process of UCAS applications, and ultimately achieve the university place of their choice.

demands of higher education. Many will have debated at The Hague with the Model United Nations, played London concert venues, taken plays to Fringe festivals, and competed at national level in rugby, fencing or lacrosse all relevant to their personal statements. Participating in such activities demonstrates a willingness to get involved, an aptitude for tackling complex challenges, and a social awareness of the world around them; all qualities expected by university admissions teams.

Instilling the right attitudes and approach is paramount in achieving success. This is one of the many strengths of the independent school system. Academic excellence is a crucial factor as university offers are conditional on achieving specific results. At interview, however, intellectual rigour and curiosity will help your child stand out from the crowd. The independent system fosters that from day one, encouraging students to go beyond the basic curriculum, discover their own interests in the world and pursue them. Students can devise their own coursework titles, choose additional languages, and undertake contemporary scientific research simply unavailable to them elsewhere. Having the support and resources to make these choices increases their value as a prospective undergraduate.

Many independent schools offer dedicated careers teams, who will discuss your child’s university options, enabling them to make the best choices possible for their future success and happiness. As your child progresses through the public examination years, having someone to guide them through their choice of subjects can make or break their application. The most competitive courses - Law, Medicine, and Economics - require you to take a specific set of A Levels just to apply. Excellent pastoral care can also ensure the whole UCAS process won’t seem as daunting. Students often receive one-to-one attention from tutors who know them personally, producing stronger and more successful applications.

Independent schools also help develop intellectual independence and encourage students to have the confidence to articulate their opinions, particularly in the Sixth Form. This can make a noticeable difference when students attend interviews. They are better informed, more relaxed and self-assured than other candidates.

Choosing an independent school means more than ensuring your child has access to the best facilities and educational support, it is an investment in their future that will develop the life-skills they will need for future successes, and greatly increase their chance of securing a place at a coveted university.

Academic successes, however, will only take them so far. The best universities are on the look out for students who have already distinguished themselves across a range of extra-curricular programmes. The independent sector is fortunate to be able to offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities, which can provide a wealth of additional experiences and skills that will equip your child for the 1 0 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

port will be high on your child’s list of priorities when it comes to senior schools! You will understand that sport plays a pivotal role in child development. Sport develops teamwork and confidence through mastering new skills. It helps form fast friendships and the habit of participation. It is the key to a healthy lifestyle. The relaxation it provides may be a crucial antidote in years to come to the fierce pressures that are the norm in many careers. Your child will grow through sport and discover a source of joy and passion that can last a lifetime. So consider: does the school have a sporting ethos in which fair play, as well as excellence is considered an important aspect of education? Has it the sort of talented coaches that can inspire and pass on skills and disciplines to youngsters? Does it provide opportunities for your child to develop as a sportsman across a wide range of sports? At the elite end, are there students playing at county, regional and national level? Are there academic PE options at GSCE and A-Level that can open up career opportunities in performance, psychology and the business of sport: marketing, sports media, and research? Is sport delivered primarily by the PE staff or does the whole school commit to games, with all pupils and staff are out on the pitches together? ‘Whole school games’ has several advantages. It allows the pupils to see subject teachers as more than narrow specialists. It promotes warm pupil-teacher relations. It provides children with admirable role models who share their enthusiasms. It also makes it far easier to recruit external coaches to support the outstanding specialist teachers. Some schools focus on high-end performance; others – like Taylors’ - provide a ‘developmental’ approach, focused on participation for the younger children and developing that into performance for the older ones. All boys (even the not particularly “sporty”) find something they can enjoy that

1 2 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

becomes part of the fabric of their lives. This breadth is complemented by an ethos that includes increasing the number of pupils representing their county, region or indeed performing in national squads. “Facilities” are secondary – look at Bradman or Pelé! If a school really wants to offer rowing, equestrianism, golf, fencing, fives, windsurfing, swimming, croquet, sailing, and sub-aqua sports - it will! Most schools offer competitive sport to all pupils. How many teams are put out? What range of sports is offered (individual and team)? Will your child get a game? Is the approach ‘win at all costs’ or a developmental one? Children learn nothing from a 10-0 drubbing. They learn very little from a 10 wicket victory. Check out the fixture list. Is it the same as a few years ago? A dynamic sports school will not rest easy on its laurels and retain traditional fixtures if they result in embarrassingly easy wins. Look for a school that develops its fixture list so that the children may at first experience narrow defeat against strong opposition, but then be motivated by this to raise the bar so that their confidence, skills and performance improve year-on. Many schools offer scholarships for sport. What does their scholars’ programme actually offer? The best programmes support and improve high level youngsters and also encompass all-rounders and specialists. They focus on supporting and improving the pupil – not the school’s results! Taylors’ has a dynamic programme where scholars enjoy additional classes including yoga and ballet – for strength and conditioning. A personal mentor meets each scholar weekly to review progress and discuss performance. Sport is a common language that cuts across social and national divides and provides life-changing experiences. Pupils learn respect, adherence to a set of rules, to win modestly and lose with dignity. Few lives are failure-free and the resilience that a child needs to overcome life’s knockbacks and go on to success is often first learned on the sports field.

So... you want to meet someone this year?

YOU’VE GOT A LIFE NOW GET A LOVE!

Exclusive drinks parties, for single, sophisticated, successful guests. No games, no gimmicks, just drinks. Meet new friends whilst looking for ‘the one’

Y

ou’ve got the best home life and enough invitations to fill a diary - just nobody to spoil, to laugh with, no-one to hold your hand & no-one to ask what they did today. You have a wonderful life; full of friends, family and children, but have yet to find ‘the one’ a romantic life filled with passion as grand as that which lives in your own heart. You have done internet dating – met married who said they were single, the 10 years older or 3 stone heavier than their photo, the nose-bleedly boring, the perfect but ‘just no chemistry’, the bitter divorcee still telling the story of his/her ex and how he/she doesn’t ever want to get married again... the ‘seperated’ person who is in a candy-store of divorcees in the internet and who has been multi-dating for 5 years... the too ‘mature’ chasing the too young, the aged lothario who thinks he/she is hot stuff, the 30 year old who wants a sugar mummy/daddy, the arrogant, the poor artist who really could do with someone to pay their rent, the one who lives abroad (and you have children here), one who has an allconsuming hobby, the great body but awful mind, the great mind but awful body... the friends who could have been lovers, the lovers who should have been friends... you’ve met them all, but where, oh where is the lady/man who is nice but not boring, interesting but not neurotic; self confident but not arrogant, is organised without having compulsions, is normal, and real and honest and straightforward, is sociable enough but enjoys the privacy of being together as a couple? They are out there... love is out there but you have to be ‘out there too - he/she is at these events looking for you!

dating; just the best way to meet someone naturally – in person over a drink - and they come recommended through a trusted network of friends and their friends’ friends. Since we out-grew ‘disco’ and had kids and important jobs, many of us want to go out and meet the ‘right kind of people’ and hopefully, ‘the One’ in a relaxed, comfortable environment. One local lady wanted to do just that so she held low-key sophisticated parties in her home for the last 6 years. The parties were hugely successful and word of mouth spread and they grew year by year, and by 2011, there were 180 guests. Every guest said they wanted more friends to come, and wanted to have singles events monthly. So; since then she has arranged drinks parties in some very select cocktail lounges and private members clubs in London for 2 years - and they just keep getting bigger! This is old fashioned social networking at its best – with the concept that you are more likely to meet someone special through a trusted network of friends; and friends-of-friends. These singles drinks evenings are attended by many single, elegant and eligible people who, like you, believe that love is out there, and that looking for it should be fun and fabulous! They are relaxed evenings; just like going out for a normal drink in a smart cocktail bar except everyone there is lovely, single, and eligible! There are now regular Exclusive drinks parties for single, successful, sophisticated people who bring their eminently eligible friends with them just to meet you, creating an ever changing circle of gorgeous, pre-vetted people who are making wonderful and exciting connections. Come and meet new friends, and even better – a gorgeous partner!

If you are happy, no hang ups, no baggage, no tissues or issues. If you are single or divorced - and now you want to meet new friends whilst looking for ‘the one’... If you are unashamedly romantic; have had one taste of love, and got your appetite back... have known love and are ready to find it again, if you have left your emotional baggage in the past, and have been fortified by experience rather than embittered by it - you have come to the right place!. He / she is at these events looking for you!!

There have been many, many couples dating as a result - three engagements and one marriage so far! Do be brave and make the most of the opportunity! Far easier to meet someone in a cocktail bar in a relaxed atmosphere, than to be set up on a date by a friend or pay thousands of pounds to an agency, or trawl through a website to find ‘the one’.

This feels more ‘natural’ somehow, doesn’t it – ‘chemistry’ cant be detected on websites – you have to meet in person - its just “something in the way she moves” .

Join us – we are all making new friends, and many are finding new love! Next drinks evening is very soon! Sign up by email now to get details and be on the guest list.

In a world where so many people are searching – there is now a whole new way of social networking – no games, no gimmicks, no cringe; no awful matchmaking or speed 6 2 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

As each piece is available to buy and take home the very same day, the fair has established itself as a go-to destination for those looking for unique one-off purchases, as well as more seasoned collectors. Over 100 specially selected galleries from across the UK and abroad will bring their very best work to the famous Battersea Park location; from bronze sculpture to aquatint prints, oil paintings to photography and etchings. Director of the Affordable Art Fair Battersea, Nicky Wheeler, comments, “There truly is something for everyone at the fair. Whether it is photography, print or sculpture that you love, we have created an atmosphere that is relaxed and informal so that visitors can browse the galleries and lose themselves in the art that inspires them – uncovering new gems as well as established artists. We encourage people to ask questions, meet some of the 6 6 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

artists responsible for the artworks on show and even have a go at producing their own pieces at one of our many workshops.” As well as browsing thousands of pieces of art, visitors at the event will be able to take part in hands on workshops, attend talks and participate in informal guided tours. In terms of budding talent, the fair will feature an emerging artists’ showcase selected by curatorial collective Jotta, giving visitors the opportunity to spot (and purchase works by) the next rising stars. Families too are encouraged to join in the fun at the fair, where a whole host of free kids’ art activities take place in the Education Space every day so visitors may leave with a few personal pieces - courtesy of their own family talent. For little ones that would prefer to play while parents shop, the fair’s on-site crèche is a bright and fun space for under 10s. The event takes place at Battersea Park on 7th – 10th March. FASHION FIT FOR THE OSCARS W A Guide to looking like a star on the Red Carpet

ith this year’s Oscars taking place on Sunday 24th February, want to hit up your next big event like an A-list celeb? We consulted top fashion and beauty experts to find out how you can take a paparazzi-approved pic, avoid wardrobe malfunction, and rock any red carpet.

It’s all About the Cocktail Dress You likely don’t have the six-figure budget or 13-person glam squad that your favourite stars do, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look stunning. Celeb stylist Phillip Bloch — who wrote The Shopping Diet: Spend Less & Get More— says that it’s really all about the dress, anyway. “Have a cocktail dress always at the ready,” he advises. “Cocktail has become the new black tie, so you can always get away with a cute little black dress. And that LBD can be green or blue or purple.” The best 7 2 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

part? You don’t have to spend a fortune on it. “With Facebook photo tagging, real women can’t always wear the same exact dress twice anymore,” he says. “Find clothes that are transformational. Don’t buy something you will only wear once. Know what you can do with it afterwards.” Draw a Line Between Sexy and tarty There’s nothing wrong with being sexy or seductive, but you don’t want to look tarty. To avoid showing too much skin with your dress, as with your makeup, be sure you are playing up one feature and not all of them. If you have a high slit, we advise against doing a plunging neckline. If you have a backless dress, keep the hemline from creeping up too high. If nothing else, show your shoulders. That’s a great feature on anyone. Think before opting for a skintight frock. If you go with a ‘standing dress,’ you might not be able to dance, sit, or eat. Don’t Overdo the Makeup You may think that this is the time to go all-out

FA S H I O N

NAOMI WATTS

JESSICA CHASTAIN

with your makeup. Whatever you do, don’t. “This is not the time to try something new, like 12-inch fake eyelashes … A little bit goes a long way” Bloch says, adding that you should pick one thing that’s easy to finesse but doesn’t require constant upkeep. “Bold red lips are great, but don’t do this and a smoky eye. Pick one. You only want to take a lip gloss and maybe some mascara with you, so know your limits.” Ying Chu, Marie Claire’s beauty director, offers up a great trick for intensifying your eyes for photos without looking overly made up: “Take a black kohl pencil and dot it along your lash line, between your eyelashes, before applying mascara.” Go for Some Killer Heels Always wear a heel when venturing to a party, noting Gwyneth Paltrow’s penchant for wearing sky-high seven-inchers. The higher the better. Platforms are the easiest in this set to walk in, but test them out in advance — wear them around the house for a couple hours — to make sure you can stand and walk in them without toppling over. Also, make sure the shoes are padded so they are a bit more comfortable. If You Can’t, Opt for a Wedge If you know you won’t make it two steps without a rolled ankle in stilettos, wedges are a good compromise. They are obviously more comfortable, or you can go with a thicker heel. In rare cases, flats work. A flat works really well with a ball gown or a full skirt, but it doesn’t look chic with a fitted dress or, say, a mermaid silhouette.” And make it a jeweled sandal, not just a flip flop. Tame those Flyaways If you plan on wearing your hair in a smooth updo or ponytail, like Blake Lively so often

JENNIFER LAWRENCE

does, “toss a clear brow gel in your evening clutch. Her favorite go-to product? The new Flyaway Tamer from John Frieda Brush the wand over flyaways around your hairline and part whenever you’re checking your lipstick. “No Photoshop needed later!” Make Your Best Pap-Worthy Pose Whether paparazzi are swarming or you are taking a few photos yourself, you want to make sure you look your best. Always puts an arm on your hip and lean against the person you are posing with … You lose a lot of your body and it makes you look slimmer.” It’s all about the grin. “Smile, or flirt, with your eyes,” she says. “Don’t smile too big with your mouth.” Be Strategic with Jewellery Always focus on one statement bold piece per look, but be careful — don’t overcrowd your neck, arms, and fingers with jewellery. If you’re wearing earrings, you can wear a bracelet, and if you are wearing a necklace, you can wear a ring,” she says. Case in point: Heidi Klum, who paired her striking Lorraine Schwartz diamond and ruby necklace (worth $3 million!) with only a pinky ring. Don’t Get on the Worst-Dressed List Be wary of making too bold a statement, like a white dress to a friend’s wedding or a crazy new trend that hasn’t made its way to popular culture just yet. What is a head-to-toe catwalk look that has just come off the runway at London Fashion Week may not necessarily look stylish in a real situation, also this month they are showing their Autumn/Winter 2013 Collections so you don’t want to be out of season, and end up on the worst-dressed list. In what is thought to be the finest set of Penfolds wines ever to be sold, ‘The Penfolds Collection’ includes a full vertical of signed Grange spanning six decades, from the experimental first vintage of 1951 through to current vintage of 2007. Each bottle has been authenticated and signed by one of Penfolds Chief Winemakers including Max Schubert, John Duval, and Peter Gago – masters of Grange, past and present. Assembled for the ultimate wine connoisseur, ‘The Penfolds Collection’ also includes a set of thirteen magnum cases, including Penfolds 2004 Bin 60A (James Suckling 100 point wine) and Penfolds 2008 Bin 620 Coonawarra Cabernet-Shiraz. In addition, the buyer will be sent a case of Penfolds Icon & Luxury* wines upon release for the next decade; and the wine team will work with the buyer to acquire £50,000 of unique Penfolds wines to tailor ‘The Penfolds Collection’ to the buyers taste. To store the finest collection of Penfolds wines ever assembled, the owner will be entitled to the ultimate bespoke Penfolds cellar built in their own home, courtesy of ‘The Spiral Cellar Company’. Here the buyer will receive two nights’ accommodation and a private guided tour including a trip to the Penfolds Kalimna homestead and Block 42, the oldest continuous producing cabernet vines in the world. is rounded off with the culinary delights of the Penfolds Magill Estate Restaurant. To complete this ultimate experience, the buyer is eligible to VIP access at future Penfolds re-corking clinics, the pinnacle of after sale service in the world of wine. Hedonism Wines buyer Alistair Viner said: “This is an incredible once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase something truly special in the world of wine from one of the world’s greatest wineries.” ‘The Penfolds Collection’ includes several legends of the wine world. The 1955 Grange was named in the top 12 wines of the twentieth century by Wine Spectator magazine; the 1990 was cited as ‘Wine of the Year’ by the same magazine in 1990; and in 1995 influential wine critic Robert Parker scored the 1976 Grange, a 100 point wine. Just a few vintages which demonstrate a mastery of excellence over the six decades.

About Penfolds Penfolds has been creating an impressive array of wines since 1844 and many would agree, led the development of Australian fine wine into the modern era. The introduction of Penfolds Grange in 1951 forever changed the landscape of Australian fine wine. Since then a series of standout wines, both white and red, have been released under the Penfolds masthead.

The Penfolds Collection goes on sale at Hedonism wines this month priced £1.2 million ($AUS 1.8 million). For more information call +44 (020) 729 078 70 or visit www.hedonism.co.uk

The world’s most expensive gifts revealed for St Valentine’s Day Most of us will be hoping for a nice card or a bunch of flowers, but for any man looking to really spoil his partner this 14th February, there are the world’s most expensive Valentine’s Day gifts to consider.

of US star Oprah, consists of 70% Valrhona cocoa blended into a creamy ganache with French truffle oil - which should explain the price tag of £1,800 per lb.

From solid gold heels encrusted with over 2,000 diamonds for an eyewatering £140,000 to a £25,000 compact mirror - these Valentine’s gifts are surely the most lavish ever created.

And for those of us just hoping for a card this year could be in line to receive a very bling version - such as the custom made luxury Grand Couture line of cards - should our partners wish to part with around £3,000.Created by Gilded Age Greetings in Miami, USA, the cards are the most expensive in the world and feature rare pink diamonds and sapphires, white diamonds, red rubies and authentic Swarovski crystals.

British designer Christopher Michael Shellis - who’s taken note of a woman’s love of shoes - spent three years creating the stilettos, which were crafted by skilled goldsmiths in temperatures of more than 1000C. Naturally, he realised the shoes would indeed need a matching bag, so has also designed an equally luxurious clutch - for a whopping £200,000. So you’re all in for £340,000. The traditional gift of chocolates on Valentine’s Day hasn’t been overlooked either, with a truly extravagant truffle being created by Danish chocolatier Fritz Knipschildt. The company has even hired a poet to serve as a personal Shakespeare to help customers express the love they feel for their other half in a one-of-a-kind poem written in the classic prose of centuries gone by. Co-founder of Gilded Age Greetings Melissa Schechter said: “Giving or receiving a Gilded Age Greeting Valentine’s card is truly a memorable experience to cherish forever. I can’t think of anything as romantic as this unique and heartfelt keepsake.”

Who wants a hottie tummy? Do you have stubborn pockets of fat that just won’t disappear no matter how hard you exercise or diet? If so, the VASER Lipo may well be for you.

W

ith the likes of TOWIE’s Maria Fowler, and several other celebrities all benefiting from the amazing results of VASER Lipo, Dr Jain’s high definition body contouring practice is growing from strength to strength! VASER Lipo uses revolutionary new ultrasound technology which removes stubborn pockets of fat resistant to diet and exercise. The procedure has been hailed as ‘six pack surgery’ as it is even possible to reveal your hidden six pack with this revolutionary form of liposuction. Dr Jain will not only get you looking fit, you’ll look younger, more energetic and in one word, fantastic. You’ll want to use that new body of yours. With no hospital stay, little bruising and minimal incisions VASER Lipo is the answer. Reshape your body and invigorate your life Traditional liposuction is like sculpting with a shop vac. Everything gets sucked and chipped away without any detail. VASER 4D liposculpture is like taking a fine chisel and tapering each and every curve; every angle is perfect and muscular. Its not just liposuction. Its VASER 4D Sculpt. VASER 4D Liposculpture is a revolution to the cosmetic surgery industry. At its inception, liposuction was designed just to remove fat. Liposculpture is a whole new way of looking and designing the anatomy so that it fits you and your lifestyle like your body should. With the VASER technology, Dr Ravi Jain removes extra fat and tightens your skin around the new curves and muscles. He leaves certain deposits of fat to accentuate your muscles while removing others to create dips and valleys around them. He sculpts your body into the ultimate harmony of art and science, talent and medicine Who can have VASER 4D? The VASER 4D procedure is meant for people who are already in good

8 4 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

physical shape but have trouble achieving a defined ,athletic physique. Both men & women can be treated. VASER 4D is not mean for people who are very overweight or obese. The procedure depends heavily on skin retraction to help define the anatomical results. For people who are overly heavy, the skin has stretch beyond where VASER could help it retract. Please ask Dr Ravi Jain what other cosmetic options you may have if this describes you. How does VASER work? VASER is an advanced medical ultrasound technology (VASER stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance). During surgery, the VASER probe emits sound energy that literally liquefies fat tissue before it is gently suctioned away. In traditional liposuction, the fat is just sucked away taking blood vessels, nerves and important connective tissue with it - resulting in severe pain, a longer recovery and mediocre results. With VASER, the liquid fat is easier to suction away, far gentler on the body and can be sculpted to enhance muscle appearance. Can you say “Confidence boost” ? Just imagine how you would feel without any extra fat, keeping you from your own carefree lifestyle. No more worrying about how that bikini will fit, or swimming with a T-shirt on. No more crash diets/ No more staring in the mirror, wishing you were slimmer. Areas commonly treated: Double Chin & Jowls Bingo Wings (Upper arms) Saddle Bags / Love handles Upper / lower abdomen Inner / outer thighs Dr Ravi Jain is one of a few experts in VASER high definition liposculpture in the world. I THINK I’VE FOUND A LUMP IN MY BREAST...

WHAT DO I DO? It is completely understandable that you might worry about the possibility of breast cancer if you find a lump, but remember; most lumps are not cancer. The most likely cause for a lump depends on your age.

Women from 20s to 30s In women from 20 to 30 a definite lump is most likely to be a fibroadenoma. These are benign lumps that can sometimes be painful or enlarge but they are not cancerous and do not turn cancerous.

Women between 40s and 50s Between 40 and 50 breast cysts becom more common. These are also entirely benign. They are collections of fluid within the breast and although they can also be painful they are not dangerous.

Women aged 30 and onwards From the age of 30 onwards the gland tissue in the breast changes and it becomes more fibrous and nodular. The way the breast feels has been described as like a scaled down packet of frozen peas and occasionally, in just the same way that frozen peas can stick together to form a clump, so breast tissue can “stick together” to form definite nodular areas. These areas are also often tender but, once again, are not a sign of cancer. 8 8 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

The rate of breast cancer begins to rise after the age of 40 and increases with age. Of course, breast cancer can occur at any age and I have seen cases in women as young as 19 and in their early 20s, but they are very, very rare. The important message is, if you notice a change in your breast please get it checked. Let’s go through what you need to do. The first thing to do is to see your GP and explain what you have noticed. They will examine you and in some cases may suggest a further check at a different time of your menstrual cycle. Some of the nodular areas can change with the cycle and this is actually a reassuring sign. If a discrete nodular area persists or your GP finds a definite lump, or is unsure, they will refer you to a breast clinic for a full assessment by the breast team. The team should consist of several consultants working together, and includes a surgeon a radiologist and a pathologist. The investigation of any breast problem revolves around, what is

H E A LT H & B E AU T Y

called, the triple assessment. It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle; pieces (of information) are collected and put together until the whole picture (the diagnosis) becomes clear. Indeed, this is often termed “the diagnostic jigsaw”. In some cases only 2 pieces may be needed, in others 4, but 3 (the triple assessment) is most common. Let’s have a look at what the pieces are. The first specialist you meet will often be the breast surgeon. They will ask questions about your symptoms (called taking your “history”). They will also ask about previous medical problems and your family history. They will then examine both breasts. How the breast feels when it is examined is the first part of the jigsaw. If there is a definite area of change then a fine needle aspiration may be carried out. This test uses a normal sized syringe and needle. The needle is placed into the area of the breast and “jiggled” so that a small amount of material is sucked into the syringe. This is sent away to be looked at under the microscope. More commonly now a test known as a core biopsy is done. A core biopsy takes a core of breast tissue about 1.5 cm long and 2 mm in diameter. The core biopsy is carried out by first putting some local anaesthetic into the skin of the breast. Once this has worked (it is quite quick) a small nick is made in the skin to allow the core biopsy needle, attached to the biopsy “gun”, to be placed into the breast. When the “gun” is “fired” (it is painless, but does make a noise rather like a large stapler) the needle takes the sample. This is often repeated a few times. The appearance of the cells that have been removed with a fine needle aspiration, or the result of the core biopsy, is the second part of the jigsaw. The final part of the triple assessment involves taking images of the breast. In ladies under 35 an ultrasound scan is the commonest way of doing this. In ladies over 35 they will have a mammogram as well. Full field digital mammograms are the most sensitive type available at the moment. What an area of the breast looks like on a mammogram or an

ultrasound scan is the third piece of the jigsaw. If the triple assessment produces the same answer at each stage the result is said to be concordant and no further tests may be needed. For example, a lump in a 30 year old lady may feel like a fibroadenoma, look like one on an ultrasound scan and a core biopsy shows pieces of a fibroadenoma. What if the pieces don’t quite fit and the picture (diagnosis) is not initially obvious (the triple assessment is then said to be discordant)? For example, in a 50 year old lady a lump may feel like a benign nodular area but look odd on an ultrasound with a normal mammogram. In this case another piece of the jigsaw may be needed, such as an MRI scan or even, occasionally an operation to remove an area for full examination under the microscope. An important part of the triple assessment that is not commonly mentioned is to watch how things change (or not) with time. It would not be unusual to check things a few months later, repeating some, or all, of the assessment to make sure nothing has changed. A thorough triple assessment may actually be a quadruple assessment! Once again it should be emphasised that in the majority of cases a triple assessment (or a quadruple one) will reveal that cancer is not present. Most symptoms are age related changes or benign lumps. However, it is important that any new change is thoroughly investigated by a specialist to make absolutely sure that all is well.

What’s in a mole? A mole (or naevus) is the term applied to any spot on the skin. Many molesare coloured (pigmented) but some have no colour. What is a Melanoma? A melanoma is the medical term for a mole. This simply means any pigmented or n on pigmented lesion; it does not mean a cancer. Although most moles are brown, they can vary from flesh coloured through yellow and blue, to black. Moles can be many different shapes and can be single or multiple, on almost any part of the body. Everybody has moles; some people have more than others. Most moles have formed before the age of 20, but some people can get new moles well into their 30s or beyond. Melanoma Symptoms The vast majority of moles remain benign (non cancerous) and never cause any trouble. However, a small number may change with time and have the potential to become a cancerous mole (malignant melanoma). If a mole changes in size or colour, if it itches, is painful or bleeds, or if new nodules develop around it or it looks red and inflamed then the mole should be removed for examination. Melanoma Treatment It is important that moles are removed properly so they can be thoroughly examined. It is usually recommended that moles are removed with an ellipse of normal skin around them, aiming for a 2mm margin of clearance. Most of the moles that are removed turn out to be fine. Pathologists (doctors who examine tissues under the microscope) use different terms for benign moles. They may be junctional, juvenile, blue, compound, dermal or intradermal. All these are descriptions for benign (non cancerous) moles. Some will be what are called dysplastic moles. These are thought to be precancerous moles that have the potential to become malignant melanomas if they are left. Although many of them may not turn cancerous it is impossible to tell and so they should probably be removed. The next stage after the dysplastic 9 0 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

mole is the malignant melanoma in situ. This has just turned cancerous, but does not have the ability to spread. Like the dysplastic mole, it is cured by removing it properly. Malignant melanomas proper have the ability to spread around the body, so the earlier they are caught the better. It seems that the most important factor in determining whether a malignant melanoma may have spread or not is its thickness. This is measured in mm and is called the Breslow thickness. Depending on the thickness, a wider removal of the skin around a malignant melanoma is usually recommended. Malignant melanomas that are less than 1mm thick have a greater than 95% chance of causing no further trouble. Another way of measuring the thickness of a malignant melanoma is the Clarke’s level. This relates to which layers of the skin the malignant melanoma has penetrated. This is less accurate that the Breslow thickness in predicting the likelihood of further problems.Melanoma Specialists As with other cancers, it is important that people who have had malignant melanomas are treated by a team of specialists. Melanoma specialists include a dermatologist, a surgeon and perhaps a plastic surgeon, an oncologist and a pathologist. Kitchens are the

new living rooms

On average, people spend from £8,000 to a massive £20,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space…so depending on the price range, what can that buy you?

Choosing a theme for your kitchen Contemporary kitchens The sleek look of a contemporary kitchen provides the practical use of space allowing for more movement in the kitchen and easier access to storage areas and necessary equipment. Contemporary colours provide a more open feeling, adding into the functional atmosphere of the space. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs. French country kitchen This look combines rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. Opt for units in an aged shade of parchment or dove grey featuring beautifully-turned, bevelled detailing. Team with natural stone or slate flooring, Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. This also works well with freestanding features, like an antique-style armoire for displaying tableware and an island unit with matching hood. Hang copper pans and accessorise the room with rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware. Shaker Style kitchen The clean lines and rustic feel of a shaker kitchen means they appeal to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look. The round knobs, pillow-fronted doors and beautiful woods are features that epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. An island in the middle can make an attractive and very useful addition. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in. Retro Kitchen A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points. Layout Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. If you’re remodelling from scratch and have a large space, think open plan and multi-purpose – somewhere to eat, work, cook and relax. Kitchen experts John Lewis of Hungerford advise thinking hard about your lifestyle. Cabinets Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours which, incidentally, rarely work in small kitchens. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective).

Don’t neglect handles They can make or break a kitchen. Small handles generally don’t work, but chrome is effective and never dates. Worktops Avoid wood near sinks or you’ll become a slave to re-oiling, and be warned, glass worktops quickly look tired and scratched. Consider twin-edged worktops that look like glass, but are laminate.Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the ubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For taps, the tri-flow system provides filtered water. Kitchen Flooring To put on a fantastic floor show, start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards. Kitchen Lighting These days, the kitchen is a hub of activity so your lighting has to be flexible: illuminating work stations for cooking and offering a warm, welcoming glow for dining and entertaining. Task Lighting Safety must come first in any kitchen. For high activity areas where you’ll be preparing food you need plenty of illumination, so work out which areas you’ll be using for practical purposes and install task lighting. To avoid task lights throwing shadows over your work surfaces, make sure you position them directly above or slightly in front of where you stand to prepare food, and on a different circuit than your mood lighting to give you more flexibility in your lighting scheme. Downlights Downlights provide a general ambient glow. Choose halogen lights if you like clean, sparkling white illumination and put them on a dimmer switch so you can adjust the clarity to change the mood in the room. If you install more than one dimmer, you can create a variety of lighting effects – almost like building layers of light to give depth and warmth to the kitchen. Light for decoration If you have features in your kitchen that are particularly attractive, show them off using light. Draw attention to shelves by installing lights underneath; fit downlights into glass display cabinets to show off a collection of china; or use picture lights on the wall to draw the eye to a beautiful print or poster. If you’re getting a kitchen made specially for you, a truly bespoke kitchen, it will be tailor made for both the space and you. For pure luxury, this is the best that money can buy. So you can create your own dream kitchen! F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3 9 7

Neptune Kitchens London

CLASSIC, SOLID AND EXCEPTIONAL VALUE!

R

ay Munn Kitchens now have one of their Bespoke Kitchens displays in Fulham at 861-863 Fulham Road as well as a showroom on the Upper Richmond Road West in Sheen. The Bespoke display in Fulham shows off a Hand Painted Classic Shaker kitchen made in our workshops in Lincolnshire whilst the Sheen showroom continues to showcase “Neptune Kitchen Furniture” and our Bespoke Contemporary “Handleless” Range. Neptune has been making classically designed hand built solid timber furniture for a decade. The company’s roots were in manufacturing solid timber garden furniture which they still do today. The principals are simple, to make beautiful kitchen furniture with the best materials possible using traditional tried and tested techniques. There is no chipboard and none of the ubiquitous MDF used in Neptune Furniture. Instead our kitchen carcases (the insides of the cabinet to the layman) are made from “birch plywood” This depending on

1 0 0 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

the range is either painted or veneered with real Oak or Ash. Drawers are traditionally made with dovetailed joints in solid ash or oak, whilst doors and frames are made in solid birch and oak with mortise and tenon joints. There are three ranges to choose from, two hand painted “Chichester” and “Suffolk” and then there is “Henley” our gently washed oak finish which gives immediate grace to any kitchen. Ray Munn Kitchens is run and partly owned by Bob Malston who has 20 years experience in the kitchen industry, having worked for a number of bespoke manufacturers over the years like “Robinson and Cornish” and latterly “Martin Moore & Co.” Bob says: “I have the utmost confidence in this furniture which is why I joined and became a shareholder in the company. It represents incredible value on all levels because of the design, materials used and the build quality.” “Here at Ray Munn Kitchens I am offering the same service as the top end bespoke

manufacturers with furniture that more than matches, in many cases at half the cost.” Our service is comprehensive but flexible. We can supply just the furniture for your builder to fit but our preferred route is to manage the whole kitchen project. Starting with designing your space, we take your brief on what you need to include in the kitchen, appliances type of sink, specific types of storage etc. and prepare a first draft plan using our years of kitchen design experience. This is presented to you together with a quotation.

We then fit the kitchen and work surfaces using our own fitters which enable us to carry out quality control throughout the project. Providing we have fitted and project managed the kitchen we then offer our limited “Lifetime Warranty” Why not come into the showroom to discuss your project with Bob over a cup of coffee. We look forward to seeing you soon.

We fully expect that you should participate in the design process at this stage and tell us what you like and dislike so that we can modify the plan until it is right for you. Once you are satisfied and wish to commission the kitchen we take a deposit which enables us to release the plans and begin the management phase, liaising with your builder or recommending a builder we work with to prepare the space for the new kitchen.

Get a handle on it!

Locks & Handles is a shop specializing in British door and window handles in a bewildering array of sizes and finishes. Comprehensive stocks of furniture, cabinet and cupboard hardware are held. Architectural Ironmongery including all types of locks & latches, brass electrical switch plates and ventilation grilles are available. They also sell bathroom accessories like taps and an amazing selection of shower baskets. The business, founded in 1965, used to be located in Exhibition Road in South Kensington but has now relocated to larger premises on Effie Road, just off Fulham Broadway. It is now easier for parking and is a minute walk from the Underground station.

While traditional period design brass fittings are the main stock line, Locks & Handles now sell an increasing quantity of contemporary designed chrome plated products. Currently polished nickel plate is the fashionable finish and is being specified by many customers. Bronze is of course the perfect finish for front door furniture and, although this is more expensive, is highly recommended. Although Locks & Handles is based in London a good selection of ‘rustic’ black iron door furniture, usually associated with country cottages, is held in stock. It is lovely to see quality British manufactured brassware so well represented in this shop along with

European manufactured products. Unlike the high street DIY stores, Locks & Handles specialize in the higher quality English manufactured hardware. This is one of the industries that Britain leads the world in. The quality & finish of English manufactured door furniture & bathroom accessories is far superior to the imported items.

The Locks & Handles sales assistants are willing to help with any enquiry no matter how unusual and are extremely knowledgeable. Even if you are not quite sure about what exactly you might require or need, they can offer advice or find you a solution to your enquiry. Most fittings are actually on display in the showroom so you can really

get a feel of them in a tactile way and have a better sense of the different finishes available, which is something that you cannot always get from looking at a picture on the internet or from a catalogue.

The shop tries to keep most items in stock but if something is unavailable they have regular deliveries from all British manufacturers. The company offers to supply bespoke items and other finishes to ‘special order’ and regular customers include many of the worlds leading interior designers, hotels, palaces and luxury liners. A visit to this specialist shop is highly recommended to everyone who has an interest in interior design, building or renovating their home.

1 1 6 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

There is an immense amount of ornate plasterwork in Great Britain in many different styles. Over the years much has become damaged or destroyed. The means of restoring and conserving ornate plasterwork has changed over the centuries. While it is important to maintain as much as possible of the original plasterwork it may be necessary to restore or replace missing or damaged sections. To carry out this work requires considerable experience. Their modeller is able to take mouldings from existing designs, if symmetrical or modelling can be executed from a photograph or drawing. Plasterwork can be cleaned or left, a model laid down and a mould made in varying types of compounds, from this mould a section of plasterwork can be reproduced and installed. A cast is then produced which can then be installed to match the original. Their work is not limited to interior cornices, decorative ceilings, arches and columns. They also manufacture and install exterior mouldings, both ornate and plain. These can be produced in sand and cement, fibreglass or Jesmonite, a resin bonded cement. This product is lighter and more durable and comes in Limestone, Portland stone, Sandstone and plain white. WHO, AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIVES, HASN’T DESIRED

THEIR OWN ISLAND? The Osros floating Island is designed to offer the billionaire super-yacht lifestyle, for mere millionaire money.

It’s hard to give a name to this unique structure — is it a boat or an island? The Osros floating island was designed as a way to have the best of both worlds. It is over 20 metres wide and more than 37 metres in length, and with about 400 m² on three floors, the Island offers up to 1,000 m² of living space. It boasts six luxury double bedrooms, with space for 12 residents and accommodation for up to four staff members.

Buyers can tailor the interior and design to their individual needs. The sun deck area features sun roof loungers, a BBQ area, Jacuzzi, and a bar with seating for up to 15 people. There is storage for water sports and diving equipment and a mooring for motor boats along with a handy hatch for loading and unloading of provisions. The main deck hosts a spacious living room and lounge with exotic aquarium, regulated lighting and air supply.

But let’s get into the details; they’ll have you mouth-watering in no time… 1 2 0 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 3

of US$100 million, but Orsos Island creator Gábor Orsós aims to combine the positive aspects of mainland real estate and luxury yachts at much reduced cost, albeit in comparison to superyachts.

Six 20m² state rooms, with en-suite bathrooms, are accessible through the living room, half a level lower, and boast large windows that afford a panoramic view of the surrounding area.

He explains: ‘In the beginning, my goal was to create an exclusive, high-quality hotel chain based on floating platforms. With the progress of the project it became clear that the attractive and unusual concept of Orsos Islands should not be limited to only a selected group of people.’Orsos Islands should reach a much broader audience, people with an awareness of modern life and a feeling of responsibility towards the environment.’

There is what the manufacturers describe as an ‘autonomous power supply based energy system’ powered, both day and night, by a noiseless wind energy system, as well as more than 120 m2 of solar panels making the most use of daylight. Heat recovery from sea water is the basis for heating and air conditioning. Previous floating island designs have come with price tags in excess

The Austrian-based company has begun manufacture of the prototype in Germany and Hungary and hope show it to the public at the end of 2013.

T

he Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Stadium will reopen to host two major London festivals and at least two celebratory gigs. The news is the result of a deal between Live Nation, the world’s biggest live music company, and the London Legacy Development Corporation, who are responsible for the future of the Olympic Park in Stratford. Live Nation has confirmed that London multi-day events Wireless Festival and Hard Rock Calling will be held in the North Park of the Olympic Complex in July. The main stadium is set to re-open on 27th July for two concerts to celebrate the first anniversary of the Opening of the 2012 Games. No acts for either the festivals or the concerts have been confirmed. Last year’s Wireless featured performances from Rihanna and Calvin Harris, while Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney appeared at Hard Rock Calling.
