World-renowned jewellery brands including Chopard and Boucheron will open their vault to release seldomseen pieces, thus contributing to the unique appeal of this special Tiara Shop. Jermyn Street The hidden treasure of London’s Luxury Quarter

N

o other city in the world does luxury and refinement quite like London, seamlessly marrying craftsmanship and creativity with elegance and eclecticism. Jermyn Street & St James’s is a key part of London Luxury, a New West End Company initiative, which encompasses Bond Street, Savile Row, Burlington Arcade, Mount Street and Cork Street including the destination stores of Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason, Liberty and Browns. London Luxury brings together the world’s most discerning shopping streets, luxury retailers, hotels and restaurants in central London into a defined luxury quarter. Tucked away from the bustle of neighbouring Piccadilly, Jermyn Street is a hidden treasure, a street famed for fine tailoring, luxury craftsmanship and first class service. Jermyn Street has a rich history closely interlinked with that of the Royal Household, dating back to 1664 when 16 j u n e 2 0 1 2

King Charles II granted Henry Jermyn, Earl of St Alban’s permission to develop a residential neighbourhood. Today, the world renowned Jermyn Street businesses maintain these connections, many being Royal Warrant holders. These Royal Warrants are highly prized and hard won and are a mark of recognition to individuals or companies who have supplied goods or service for at least five years to HM Queen, HRH Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales. Brands patronised by the Royal Family are abundant on Jermyn Street. Floris, sole Perfumers by Appointment to HRH Queen Elizabeth II, has brought to light their original ‘Royal Arms’ recipe in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee. This perfume was originally created by the Floris family to celebrate the birth of King George V’s first grandchild, Elizabeth. Floris have produced six Diamond Editions of this iconic perfume, each hand poured into an antique bottle from the Floris collection dating back to the 1900’s.

Benson & Clegg, bespoke tailors based in the Piccadilly Arcade just off Jermyn Street, also have long standing royal connections. The company held a Royal Warrant as bespoke tailors to HM King George VI, and holds a warrant to HRH The Prince Of Wales as Suppliers of Buttons, Badges and Military Neckwear. To mark the Diamond Jubilee, Benson & Clegg has commissioned two brand new blazer buttons featuring the Royal Arms and The Queen’s Cypher in both gold plate and sterling silver, as well as two English silk ties with a royal motif and stripe. Foster & Sons, the leading bespoke shoe maker established in 1840, epitomises the craftsmanship of Jermyn Street. To celebrate the Jubilee, Caroline Groves has designed a one off pair of shoes for Foster & Son with gold leaf along the soles, showcasing the very best of British design, traditional methods and materials. Meanwhile, the Royal Grocers Fortnum & Mason are allowing individuals the chance to eat like kings throughout the Diamond Jubilee. Fortnum’s has created a range of 60 celebratory foods, drink and gifts. Each item has been thoughtfully designed and created using superlative ingredients. The design inspiration for the Fortnum’s Jubilee range harks back to Queen Elizabeth’s coronation and takes inspiration from the Queen’s Beasts; animals (real and mythical) that feature in the Coat of Arms of several of Her Majesty’s forebears. The Ritz London has been the home away from home for British and international Royalty since the hotel’s opening in 1906. Within the gilt-edged walls HRH The Duke of Windsor dined and danced, HRH Queen Elizabeth celebrated her 80th birthday and HRH The Prince of Wales awarded the hotel its prestigious Royal Warrant. The Ritz will commemorate the Diamond Jubilee with The Definitive Diamond Jubilee accommodation offer, including a three night stay in a sumptuous Louis XVI inspired room, with unique Jubileeinspired gifts, tickets and transfers to iconic events such as Her Majesty leading the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant from the Royal Barge. Jermyn Street’s world class reputation for luxury goods and service has gained it a rich history, adorned with Royal connections and justifying its status as the hidden treasure of London’s Luxury Quarter. www.jermynstreet.net www.londonluxuryquarter.com

run by Amika London, offering an eclectic mix of international opera, jazz and swing sounds. e tempo increases throughout the evening as organisers encourage the guests to party the night away. After the prize giving on Saturday evening, ‘Beach Party the Polo’ will kick off, infusing the chic surroundings with a festival atmosphere as live bands will perform, followed by the beats of international House DJ Colin ‘StarRocker’ Pereira. e competition is being sponsored by a range of companies, including Asahi, Sunseeker, Pommery Champagne and Amika London, and even us here at Sandbanks Life; who are set to sponsor the Scottish boys. Captain of Scotland, Jamie le Hardy said of the event: “It’s a very social weekend and it’s a lot of fun – there’s a real buzz! It’s a great spectacle. You’re right next to the action so it’s a great way of showing polo to the public.” Jamie Le Hardy is widely considered to be one of the best British players the game has seen over the last decade and has been decorated with a host of prestigious awards. Born in Dorset, into an Army family, whose parents travelled extensively throughout Jamie’s early years, his first recollection of polo was watching his father play in Hong Kong. On returning to the UK, Jamie became involved in pony club polo where his passion for the sport started to flourish and his talent clearly showed. He began his career fresh out of school; within three years he had won ‘Young Player of the Year’ award and the British Open Gold Cup: “ose two events really launched my career and since then I’ve been one of the highest rated players in England... I’m half Scottish, half English; my Mum’s Scottish. I played for England a lot in my career and now I’ve taken up the Scottish mantel and am captaining the team.” His other accolades include numerous ‘Most Valuable Player’ awards; he was the first England captain to beat Argentina since World War II and he has won the Golden Jubilee Trophy with Prince Harry. As well as being a world-class talent on the pitch, le Hardy is also a professional A Grade Umpire, and an HPA qualified coach; he owns and runs the le Hardy Polo Academy (based in Surrey) which caters for all ages and abilities: “I spend quite a bit of time coaching, developing horses and

putting a bit back into the sport... If you want to get into polo, have a look at our website and speak to me.” www.lehardypolo.com World renowned English polo-player Jack Kidd is also one of the fantastic sportsman playing during the tournament. Among his numerous achievements which include tournament victories around the world, Kidd has achieved two European gold medals in the Federation of International Polo Championships on grass and an Arena Gold Cup win in 2006. In addition to his success as an outdoor player on grass, Kidd is also perhaps one of the best known players on the Snowpolo circuit; claiming victory at numerous tournaments, perhaps most notably Cartier in St Morita. He is also a pivotal promoter in the recent launch of the Berenberg Snowpolo tournament in January. Influenced by his father who show-jumped for Great Britain at the Olympics and played polo for England, Kidd’s love of the game began at the tender age of 14, “By the time I was 17 I was a professional and twenty years later I’m still a pro”, he said. A truly passionate player, Kidd said of the game: “It’s completely addictive; the most amazing sport you could ever play; to gallop on horses and score goals... its a great, great sport!” I spoke to Kidd, who having spent the last five consecutive days on the pitch, was cooling down and getting some well earned respite. For a man who plays polo consistently throughout the year, his praise of the British Beach Polo Championships was illustrative of the fabulous weekend spectators can expect, “It’s one of the best weekends of the English polo season. I look forward to it immensely and I look forward to playing against all the other countries” Spectators can expect some exciting games, watching these world-class talents stretched to their best, as the sand surface does for a fast paced and technically demanding game: “Sand is probably the most difficult surface to play on out of them all; snow or grass. You have to be very skilled with the horse and very good at hitting the ball in the air.” When I asked him what visitors to the championships can expect, Kidd simply said, “Big parties and big polo matches. It should be a stonker!” Visit www.sandpolo.com for more information on how to book ■ june2012

Since the first Championships in 1877, Wimbledon has grown from its roots as a garden-party tournament to a Grand Slam tournament with a following of millions around the world. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, responsible for staging the world’s leading tennis tournament, is a private Club founded in 1868, originally as ‘The All England Croquet Club’. Its first ground was situated off Worple Road, Wimbledon. In 1875 lawn tennis, a game introduced by major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so earlier and originally called Sphairistike, was added to the activities of the Club. In the spring of 1877 the Club was re-titled ‘The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club’ and signalled its change of name by instituting the first Lawn Tennis Championship. The only event held in 1877 was the Gentlemen’s Singles which was won by Spencer Gore, an old Harrovian rackets player, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final.

The lawns at the Ground were arranged in such a way that the principal court was situated in the middle with the others arranged around it; hence the title ‘Centre Court’, which was retained when the Club moved in 1922 to the present site in Church Road opened by King George V. The foresight of building the present stadium, designed to hold 14,000 people, did more to popularise the game worldwide than anything that has happened to date. However, in 1980 four new courts were brought into commission on the north side of the ground, which meant the Centre Court was once more at the centre of the tournament. The opening of the new No. 1 Court in 1997 emphasised the description. By 1882 activity at the Club was almost exclusively confined to lawn tennis and that year the word ‘croquet’ was dropped from the title. However, for sentimental reasons, it was restored in 1899 and the club has been known as ‘The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’ ever since. june2012

of the Tournament, these players will be joined by Juniors, Veteran and Wheelchair competitors, playing in their own events on the Championships’ lawns. The All England Club, Wimbledon has announced that the total prize money at this year’s 126th Championships, will be £16.1million, an increase of 10% on 2011. Grounds open at 10:30am each day. On Courts No.2–19, play is provisionally scheduled to start at 11:30am for main draw matches on at least the first eight days and at 11:00am for the Junior matches on the middle Saturday and during the second week. Centre Court play scheduled to start at 1pm, except the last two days when 2pm. No.1 Court play scheduled to start at 1pm for all 13 days. CHANGES TO THE ORDER OF PLAY The Club tries to play all matches on the courts and days published. However, occasionally it is necessary to switch a match from one court to another. This can be for a number of reasons. Some players remain involved in several events towards the end of The Championships and it may be necessary to move a match to avoid a clash. The Club tries to give similar rest periods between matches for players due to play each other. The majority of tickets for The Championships are allocated through the Public Ballot. Applications for the 2012 Ballot are now closed. The Ticket Office is open for all ticketing queries, normal opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9am – 5pm (excl. Bank Holidays). Tel: 020 8971 2473. Please Note: The Ticket Office is available for all ticket and ballot enquiries but is NOT a Box Office.

ENTER THE LADIES In 1884 the Ladies’ Singles was inaugurated and, from an entry of 13 players, Maud Watson became the first champion. That same year, the Gentlemen’s Doubles was started, with the trophy donated by the Oxford University Lawn Tennis Club after the end of their doubles championship, played from 1879 to 1883. OVERSEAS CHAMPIONS By the turn of the century Wimbledon had assumed an international character and in 1905 May Sutton of the United States became the first Champion from overseas when she won the Ladies’ Singles. She repeated her success in 1907, the year when Norman Brookes of Australia became the first Gentlemen’s Singles champion from overseas. Since that year, only two players from Great Britain, Arthur Gore and Fred Perry, have managed to win the Men’s Singles while there have been five British Ladies’ Champions since Wimbledon moved to Church Road — Kitty McKane Godfree, Dorothy Round, Angela Mortimer, Ann Jones and Virginia Wade. WARTIME WIMBLEDON During the Second World War the Club managed to remain open despite a severe curtailment of staff. The premises were used for a variety of civil defence and military functions such as fire and ambulance services, Home Guard and a decontamination unit. Troops stationed within the vicinity were allowed to use the main concourse for drilling. Another familiar sight around the ground was a small farmyard consisting of pigs, hens, geese, rabbits, etc. In October 1940 a ‘stick’ of five 500lb bombs struck Centre Court, resulting in the loss of 1,200 seats.

With the war in Europe over, signs of normality began to return to Wimbledon during June and July 1945, when a series of matches between Allied servicemen took place on the old No. 1 Court, which had escaped enemy action. Early in 1946 the decision was taken to resume The Championships that summer. In more recent years long-standing records have been broken. In 1980 Bjorn Borg of Sweden became the first player to win the Gentlemen’s Singles five times in the post-challenge round era; a feat replicated by Roger Federer between 2003 and 2007. In 1985 Boris Becker, aged 17, became the youngest player, the first unseeded player and the first German to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. In 1987 Martina Navratilova of the United States became the first player to win the Ladies’ Singles six times in succession and in 1990 she attained the all-time record of nine victories in the event. Pete Sampras of the United States registered his seventh win in 2000 and in 2001, Goran Ivanisevic became the first wildcard to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. Over the years the Club has constantly been aware of the need to provide facilities and ground improvements compatible with the pace and demand of modern day sport. Seldom has a year gone by without alteration to the ground or some organisational change taking place. In recent years the momentum has increased and major works programmes have provided improved facilities for the players, spectators, officials and media. WIMBLEDON 2012 Wimbledon 2012 will see the finest players from over 60 countries compete in the five main Championships events. In the second week

Henley Royal Regatta 2012 Wednesday 27th June - Sunday 1st July The Henley Royal Regatta is one of the premier sporting and social occasions in the British calendar. With its 160 year history, it is undoubtedly the best known regatta in the world and it holds a unique place in the respect and affection of all oarsmen - both active and retired. Founded in 1839, it is famous both as a great sporting occasion and as a social event. People come from all over the world to attend, either as competitors or as spectators. Winning an event at Henley has always been considered one of the greatest achievements of a rower’s career, even amongst those who have become world champions; and a rowing life is not complete if it does not include competing at Henley. Unlike multi-lane international regattas, Henley still operates a knock-out draw with only two boats racing in each heat. This entails the organisation of up to 90 races on some of the five days. The length of the Course is 1 mile 550 yards. It takes approximately seven minutes to cover, so there are often two races at once on the Course for much of the day. The number of races is, of course, reduced on each successive day, leaving only the Finals to be rowed on the last day. The first rounds of the Thames, Temple, Princess Elizabeth, Wyfold, Britannia, Prince Albert and Fawley Challenge Cups will begin racing on Wednesday 27th June 2012. The racing timetable for the Wednesday will be posted on the Regatta website on the afternoon of Sunday 24th June. The first rounds of all other events will begin racing on Thursday 28th or Friday 29th June. There are 20 events in total: 6 classes of race for Eights, 5 for Fours (3 coxless and 2 coxed), 5 for Quadruple Sculls, and races for Coxless Pairs and Double Sculls. In addition there are single sculling races for both men and women. A record number of 133 overseas crews have entered this year’s event, easily breaking the previous record of 126 overseas crews set in the 150th Anniversary year back in 1989. Twenty one overseas nations are represented, the second 26 j u n e 2 0 1 2

Olympic Flame comes to London

L

it in Greece, the Olympic Flame arrived in the UK on 18th May 2012. Representing peace, unity and friendship, 8,000 inspirational people from around the UK will carry the Olympic Flame as it journeys across Britain between 19th May – 27th July 2012. Nominated by someone they know, it is their moment to shine, inspiring millions of people watching in their community. Torchbearers will carry the Flame through more than 1,000 cities, towns and villages. The Olympic Flame will come within 10 miles of 95% of people in the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey. It will enable local communities to shine a light on the best their area has to offer – including celebrations of local culture,

breathtaking landscapes and dynamic urban areas. The London 2012 Olympic Torch features 8,000 small cut-out circles, representing the 8,000 inspirational people who will carry it on its journey. The Torch was designed by east Londoners Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, who won the opportunity through a competitive tender run by the London 2012 Organising Committee and the Design Council. The Torch stands 800mm high and weighs 800 grammes, and is made up of an inner and an outer aluminium alloy skin, held in place by a cast top piece and base, perforated by 8,000 circles which run the length of the body of the Torch also offer a unique level of transparency. You can see right to the heart of the Torch

and view the burner system which will keep the Olympic Flame alive on its journey. More than half of the London 2012 Torchbearers are young people aged as young as 12, so the designers aimed to make the Torch as light as possible. The circles also help ensure heat is quickly dissipated, without being conducted down the handle, and providing extra grip. The triangular-shaped Torch was inspired by a series of ‘threes’ that are found in the history of the Olympic Games and the vision for the Olympic Movement: The three Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship; The three words that make the Olympic motto – faster, higher, stronger; The fact that the UK has hosted the Olympic Games in 1908, 1948 and will host them for the third time in 2012; and The vision for the London 2012 Olympic Games to combine three bodies of work – sport, education and culture. As it makes its way across the UK on a 70-day journey it brings the excitement of the Games to everyone.

JAMES BEIM

“ The best feeling in the world” AUDI ROARS INTO THE POLO ARENA WITH ITS SPONSORSHIP OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FORMAT, CREATING A MEMORABLE POLO DAY FOR BOTH PLAYER AND SPECTATOR

T

he biggest spectator polo day in the world is held at Guards Polo Club in the heart of the Royal Park at Windsor. From this year, this historic event will be sponsored by Audi, the leading luxury carmaker. is company is no stranger to polo though, as it has been the sponsor of the England polo team for several years. is makes it the perfect partner for the leading showcase event for the England Polo Team – the Coronation Cup on the Audi International Polo Day. Last year, the sport’s governing body, the Hurlingham Polo Association, in conjunction with Guards Polo Club, celebrated the centenary of the Coronation Cup, which has been played at this most famous of polo clubs for 40 of those past 100 years. Even today, the Coronation Cup is viewed by English polo players, and indeed some of the most famous international names in the sport, as

32 j u n e 2 0 1 2

the most coveted event to play for during the English polo season. e England team manager Andrew Hine, who has also captained the England team on this day many times too, believes International Day has a flavour that cannot be matched anywhere else in the world. “You can play in the Argentine Open in Palermo, Buenos Aires, which for many is the Mecca of the sport, with the noise and 5,000 people on top of you; but when you play at Guards Polo Club in e Coronation Cup, and you hear the roar of some 25,000 people, there is nothing like it anywhere in the world. No event can claim those sorts of numbers, and when you get a great, close match, and the crowd in those stands gets behind you, the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. It is the biggest game in the world. We love that as players. ere’s no greater feeling.” e England team has dominated the Coronation Cup in the past couple of years, defeating both New Zealand and Brazil on the

Club’s most famous of grounds – e Queen’s Ground. is year the team, led by the talented Luke Tomlinson, will be hoping to retain its clean sheet against a talented team from South Africa. is will be the third time that these two countries have met in this competition and the tally currently stands at 2-0 to the home side. So no pressure for Luke and his team-mates then! But win or lose, Luke, who has worn the skipper’s armband since 2006 knows it will be a match to remember. “It’s always a great occasion to be involved in,” he says. “To play for your country, and to be captain, is a high honour in any sport. It’s always a great feeling to go out there and play in front of a huge home crowd. As players, it means so much to us.” e support of Audi at this International Polo at Guards Polo Club on Sunday 22 July not only guarantees to give the best English players the opportunity to shine on this most famous of days, but is also enabling the governing body, the Hurlingham Polo Association and Audi to create a platform of international events at other clubs around the country too. Audi has created an International Test Match Series – with England games at Cowdray Park in Sussex, Beaufort in Gloucestershire and, for the first time at Cheshire Racecourse too. is not only says much about the depth of talent and interest in the sport in the UK today, but also highlight’s Audi’s commitment to the oldest team sport in the world. e Audi International Day naturally becomes a late summer highlight of the British sporting calendar. However, to ensure that it does not clash with that other great sporting occasion in 2012, the London Olympics, the polo will be staged a week earlier than usual – on Sunday 22 July. Despite this date change, it remains framed around those other great sporting and social events - Henley, Wimbledon, Ascot and the Lord’s Test match and continues to offer two outstanding polo games – the Coronation Cup in the afternoon and a morning game – showcasing up-and-coming English talent. Of course this year, in honour of Her Majesty e Queen, the winners of the morning game, Young England v e Commonwealth, will receive a new cup this year – the Diamond Jubilee Trophy. Her Majesty, of course, is a huge supporter of the sport, having watched her husband and eldest son play and now two of her grandsons, HRH e Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Harry. Although there is a new name associated with this event, some things remain very much the same. Pomp, pageantry and elegance will be very much the order of the day, with plenty of opportunities for visitors to Guards Polo Club to enjoy some of the finest hospitality available at any sporting event. is may be courtesy of Pink Food in the Guards Members’ Marquee, with its delicious lunch and afternoon tea menu or seated within Keith’s Prowse’s Chukkas marquee. Here guests have the perfect environment from which to enjoy a wonderful, relaxing day of polo, including a wonderful Best of British menu in honour of the Diamond Jubilee. Meanwhile Chinawhite will be celebrating its 11th year at the International Polo. With hospitality options for both day and evening – or even a combination of the two, this fantastic, dramatic marquee can offer something for everyone. With leading DJ Calvin Harris headlining the decks in the evening, the marquee will become the polo party of the year – if not the decade. e Audi International Day has all the ingredients to create a polo day to remember. So whether you have an Audi invitation to its elegant lunch in the Clubhouse or planning a more informal affair with friends and family at the Club, there are plenty of opportunities to create your own lasting memories.

T

his month, we were invited to dine at the locally renowned ‘Stuzzico’ restaurant. Tucked away down Kendall Street, this modest, modern Italian eatery has been surprising critics and visitors for years. Located within walking distance from London’s prestigious ‘Bond Street’, ‘Marble Arch’ and ‘Paddington’ stations, the restaurant and its refined, quiet surroundings provide a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the City. Stuzzico was the brainchild of Pino Guido, an Italian born, local man, passionate about authentic Italian cooking and the people that enjoy it. Having owned the restaurant since 2001, Stuzzico operates as an up-market cafe, serving breakfast and lunch, only to be changed to its true form in the evening. By day, the cafe sell a number of cooked breakfasts, simple lunches, pastries, coffee’s, juices etc. The large wooden tables are stripped bare, and the grand folding doors at the front of the restaurant are opened to allow guests to appreciate the beautiful weather outside. As the sun falls, Stuzzico is transformed. The candlelit tables are dressed elegantly in white, and are decorated simplistically and traditionally. The large open windows at the front of the restaurant are now closed and soundproof, providing a tranquil environment for dining with a pleasant view on to the street. As we arrive, Pino welcomes us with open arms, whilst the polite and friendly staff set up our table. It takes only a few minutes for more guests to arrive, all of which Pino greets with the same attention and excitement, many of which he knows on first name basis. The atmosphere in the restaurant is quite unique; it feels intimate and homely. Perfect for family, couples and business people who simply want to eat great 34 j u n e 2 0 1 2

A TRUE TASTE of Italy food and feel very comfortable. Pino and his supporting service staff are committed to making their customers feel at home. Whatever you are looking for on your evening, they remain focused on making sure you enjoy it. ‘Whatever you like’ and ‘Enjoy yourself ’ can be heard around the room, as new customers can’t quite believe the homely atmosphere, and regular customers finally sink their shoulders for the day, knowing what to expect. There is a grand selection of dishes to start. We recommend the deliciously simple; ‘Asparagi e Pancetta con Salsa Olandese’ - Asparagus wrapped in Pancetta with Hollandaise sauce. The fresh and nutty; ‘Crudité con Caprino e Noci’ (Crudites with goats cheese, walnuts and balsamic dressing.) Alternatively, if pasta is your thing, the ‘Tagliatelle con Ragu

di Vitello, Olive e Pistacchi’ (Tagliatelle with veal ragu olives and pistachio) is too good to miss and the ‘Raviolone Melanzane e Mozzarella com Pomodorini e Rucola’ (Aubergine with Mozzarella Ravioli with cherry tomatoes and rocket) is exquisite. The portions are large enough to give you a true taster of the dish, but not too big that they ruin your appetite. The quality and variation of the main courses are extraordinary. A welcome contrast to the typical ‘English Interpretation’ of Italian food, Stuzzico have created a truly authentic and impressive menu. To name just a few; the ‘Scaloppine di Vitello alla Romana’ (Veal escallops with Parma Ham and sage served with French beans) ‘Tagliata di Manzo con Rucolo, Parmigiano e Aceto Balsamico’ (Sliced dry

aged sirloin steak with rocket, parmesan and balsamic) and various delicate alternatives including a freshly grilled chicken in herbs and chilli, Grilled Mackerel with a lime risotto, Lemon Sole with a sauté of asparagus with clams and a vegetarian lasagna. Our personal favourite was the ‘Spada alla Griglia Agretti e Olive, Capperi e Pomodorini’ (Grilled swordfish with agretti, olives, capers and cherry tomatoes.) The dishes are delicious, perfectly balanced and the produce is clearly very fresh. Pino is as passionate about his wine as he is about his food, so naturally the wine list is built to compliment the meal and cater for those with a penchant for very good Italian wine. Offering handpicked and carefully selected bottles from Sicily, Tuscany, Apulia and Abruzzo ranging in tone, length, richness and flavour, it’s not so much a case of whether to have another bottle, but what to have. Our personal recommendations, white: Bramito del Cervo Chardonnay 2010 Antinori. Red: Conti Zecca Cantalupi Primitivo. Finally, to finish the meal Stuzzico offer a delicious ‘Tiramisu’, the ‘Stuzzico Mess’ home-made ‘Fruit cake’ or our personal favourite; ‘Panacotta with Raspberry’. We would strongly recommend any lover of Italian food to visit Stuzzico. The food is authentic, fresh and delicious, served with a smile and immaculate customer service. The restaurant itself is beautifully simple, elegant yet understated and one would be hard pushed to find a friendlier environment to dine. Perfect for couples, families, business people - a passion for food is the only requirement. It is no wonder why Stuzzico has built up such a loyal base of local customers, but now the secret is out, I would recommend booking early!

BBC Proms 2012 International orchestras, animated artists and an iconic Barenboim Beethoven cycle for BBC Proms 2012.

T

he 2012 BBC Proms has revealed details of the broad-ranging programme of events planned for its 118th season. Opening at the Royal Albert Hall on 13th July 2012, the festival promises two months of the world’s greatest artists, composers, orchestras and ensembles across 92 concerts, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, this summer promises to be unlike any other, and as such, the Proms is delighted to be part of theLondon 2012 Festival. Throughout the season there is music to reflect these major events, and on the opening night of the Proms, four British conductors take to the Royal Albert Hall stage to ‘pass the baton’: Martyn Brabbins,Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner and Sir Roger Norrington. Daniel Barenboim and his celebrated West-Eastern Divan Orchestra make Proms history by performing all nine Beethoven symphonies - the first time the entire cycle has featured at the Proms in over 60 years -whilst also becoming the Proms’ first ever nonBBC orchestra-in-residence. English National Opera and the Royal Opera House both

44 j u n e 2 0 1 2

perform complete operas in the same season for the first time; the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra becomes the first Brazilian orchestra to appear at the festival and in an exciting collaboration with Aardman Animations, the much-loved Wallace & Gromit characters are transported to the Royal Albert Hall stage for the world premiere of Wallace’s new work, a BBC commission! The season celebrates some of the world’s most eminent living composers including Pierre Boulez. British composers celebrating significant birthdays include Oliver Knussen and Simon

Bainbridge at 60, and Hugh Wood and Alexander Goehr at 80. There are also 150th birthday tributes to Debussy and Delius. As ever the Proms remains firmly committed to new music, with 17 BBC commissions - a further five world premieres and 14 other UK and London premieres, including versions of music by Mendelssohn and Gabrieli, previously unheard in the UK. On top of this are 10 short BBC commissions which make up the Music Walk around South Kensington, part of the centenary celebrations of John Cage.

Full details of the season and tickets are available at www.bbc.co.uk/proms or 0844 209 7353 and in person at the Royal Albert Hall

Youth is a major focus of the festival. From 4th – 6th August four youth orchestras from around the UK, as well as the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and Wales, perform at the Proms. Other UK and international youth ensembles include the Juilliard Orchestra and the Aldeburgh World Orchestra, created to bring together the best young performers from around the globe. The BBC Proms Youth Choir gives its inaugural performance, part of an on-going four-year project. In addition to the six BBC performing groups who once again provide the backbone to the season, there is a stellar line up of international orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker with Sir Simon Rattle and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Bernard Haitink, who for the first time give two performances each in one season. The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly also gives two concerts. In the spirit of the Proms enduring mission to make the best classical music available to everyone, every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 with many televised on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Four. For the seventh year in a row, Promming tickets remain just £5 and for the first time this season, seats are half-price for under-18s. Roger Wright, Director BBC Proms and Controller BBC Radio 3, says: “From Daniel Barenboim to Wallace & Gromit, we once again look forward to welcoming the world’s greatest artists to a festival where there is something for everyone to enjoy. Promming tickets remain just £5 and there are plenty of ways for people to enjoy the events in person, on radio, television and online. The BBC’s on-going commitment in running the festival allows the Proms to be one of the best value-formoney experiences anywhere.”

Love Parks Week Healthy parks, happy hearts Saturday 21st July to Sunday 29th July

L

ove Parks Week aims to raise awareness of the importance of parks and green spaces, showcasing the benefits they bring and highlighting the need for continual investment and engagement. This year Love Parks Week will be focusing on access for all, to healthy green spaces. The campaign will highlight what a healthy, and quality green space looks like and will begin to assess the nation’s parks by encouraging people to give their park a simple health check. GreenSpace has launched a new website for Love Parks Week with a fun mascot called Rootz. The site will still provide resources and tools for running successful, well promoted events and will include new features to help people get more involved in campaigning for and improving their local green space. The campaign hopes to grow on the success of last year’s numbers which achieved

one million people taking part. Circus skills workshops, Nordic walking, art in the park, military fitness, and music and theatre performances were just some of the 1,200 events people attended. By holding an event in a park or by simply attending one, you will be helping to drive the message that our parks and green spaces are essential to healthy, happy and strong communities. Paul Bramhill, CEO of charity GreenSpace, highlights the importance of the campaign: “As the benefits of parks have become more recognised, unfortunately the future of green space management is at risk. Local authority budgets are being dramatically reduced and we cannot expect community groups, that already identify they need more funding, training and volunteers, to be the only solution. Parks need to be properly financed to remain healthy – accessible, safe, lush, full of life, welcoming and a hub of the community. I cannot stress

enough how important this year’s campaign is, please start to think about the future health of your park.” Love Parks Week is encouraging event organisers, such as local authorities and other charity groups to embrace the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by running Community Games events which can be any type of sporting event from a torch relay through the park to tennis tournaments to kid-friendly events like egg and spoon races. A guide and collection of fun promotional materials have been created for event organisers to provide ideas and to help promote their events with the prestigious Inspire brand. www.loveparksweek.org.uk Love Parks Week is organised by parks charity GreenSpace.

GreenSpace is a registered charity which works to improve parks and green spaces by raising awareness, involving communities and creating skilled professionals. For more information: www.green-space.org.uk.

25TH ANNIVERSARY

The Importance of Dividends Patrick Gordon, Senior Investment Strategist and Partner at Killik & Co, discusses why dividend income has become so important during the current investment climate.

T

he second quarter has been a volatile period for the equity markets, which have reacted to the uncertainty resulting from developments in the eurozone and to some signs of slowing economic growth. However, the period also saw a number of companies reporting results which exceeded analysts’ earnings forecasts. Many of these companies also have strong balance sheets and have been increasing their dividends. The base rate of interest has been at 0.5% now for 39 consecutive months, following the Bank of England’s decision to leave it unchanged in June. Given the fragile state of the economy and the negative impact that the eurozone crisis is having on confidence, the rate is likely to remain low for some time yet. In fact, recent talk has been of a potential further cut to interest rates! When we combine this with the exceptionally low yields currently on offer in the Gilt market, it makes for a challenging environment for the income seeking investor. In such an environment we believe that investors should not lose sight of the importance of dividend income. The UK is one of the highest yielding markets globally with a prospective net dividend yield of 4.4% on the FTSE 100, with the index at 5435. There are, however, a number of companies with yields comfortably ahead of this and which have an impressive record of growing these dividends over time. Dividends can form an important part of an equity investment’s total return. For investors who are able to withstand the fluctuations in the capital value of their investments, the dividend yields offered by these companies can be appealing. It is worth noting that for a basic rate tax payer to achieve a net yield of 4.4% from a taxable deposit account, the account would need to pay gross interest of 5.5%. 48 j u n e 2 0 1 2

2 012

arking the first anniversary since Seve Ballesteros lost his battle with brain cancer, celebrities from the world of sport and entertainment have united to launch the first ever ‘Seve Day’ - a European-wide golf tournament set up by YourGolfTravel.com, in partnership with the Seve Ballesteros Foundation and Cancer Research UK. Celebrities including pro golfer Justin Rose, Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans, former footballer and England manager Kevin Keegan, and Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp, have all committed to support Seve Day which starts on July 1st 2012 - paying tribute to Seve’s first Major title at The Open in 1979. Seve Day hopes to attract thousands of participants and raise significant funds for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation which, in partnership with Cancer Research UK, funds vital research into brain cancer. Justin Rose said: “Seve has been a hero to me all my life. Seve’s style of play continues to inspire me, and golfers all over the world, but there will never be another Seve. Seve Day in aid of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation gives golfers everywhere the chance to ‘play like Seve’ in his memory, while raising vital funds for brain cancer. I encourage golfers everywhere to show their support and play too.” A star-studded grand final will be held at Celtic Manor’s championship 2010 course in October 2012, just after the Ryder Cup, where the top 72 Stableford score entrants will play for big prizes and the Seve Day 2012 trophy. Ross Marshall, co-founder of YourGolfTravel.com, said: 52 j u n e 2 0 1 2

“Seve Ballesteros was, and still is, such an inspirational figure in European golf. We wanted to create an event that he would have been proud of, a tournament that would capture his very golfing essence; great camaraderie, brilliant shot making, courage under pressure and all round excellence on the golf course. Golfers will have to play the greatest round of their life to make the final, just the way that Seve would have wanted it!” Ivan Ballesteros, Seve’s nephew and Vice President of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of Seve Day 2012, which we hope will be a huge success in our aim to raise money for brain cancer research. Golfers all have their own favourite memories of Seve and this event gives them a chance to remember his brilliance, and support a cause that was very close to his heart.” • The entry fee of £25/€30 will go directly to the Seve Ballesteros Foundation in its entirety. • Entrants are asked to play a round of golf on any course in Europe and register their scores on the Seveday.com website. • All registered participants will receive benefits worth £250 including golf lessons and complimentary rounds of golf, as well as the chance to win an exclusive prize which includes a trip to the US Masters if they win the grand final. Ballgowns British Glamour Since 1950

Sponsored by Coutts. V&A Museum, South Kensington, SW7 Until 6th January 2013

A

spectacular exhibition of more than 60 ballgowns from 1950 to the present day. Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 will be the first exhibition in the newly renovated V&A Fashion Galleries and will feature beautiful ballgowns, red carpet evening gowns and catwalk showstoppers. There is a strong British design tradition of creating sumptuous ballgowns, through the work of designers such as Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. The exhibition will cover more than 60 years of a tradition that continues to flourish. Ballgowns will show specially made designs for social events such as private parties, royal state occasions, debutante balls 54 j u n e 2 0 1 2

and red carpet events. Tour de force eveningwear from the V&A’s vast collection by designers such as Norman

Hartnell, Victor Stiebel, Zandra Rhodes, Catherine Walker, Jonathan Saunders and Hussein Chalayan will be on show, as well as dresses fresh from the catwalk shows of Alexander McQueen, Giles, Erdem, Roksanda Illincic, Mark Fast and Jenny Packham. Innovative designer Gareth Pugh has created a stunning metallic leather dress especially for the exhibition. Royal gowns always make headlines. A selection of royal ballgowns will be displayed,

Open daily 10am - 5.45pm and until 10pm every Friday Tickets: £10 (concessions available) V&A Members go free. For advance bookings visit www.vam.ac.uk (booking fee applies)

including a Norman Hartnell gown designed for Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Princess Diana’s ‘Elvis Dress’ designed by Catherine Walker and gowns worn by today’s young royals. Dresses worn by Sandra Bullock, Daphne Guinness, Elizabeth Hurley and Bianca Jagger will also be shown. Since the 1950s, occasions for wearing formal attire have evolved from the private event to the public parade. In the post-war period as Europe struggled toward recovery, extravagant, exclusive balls provided glittering backdrops for splendid couture gowns, so helping to stimulate sartorial consumption and aspiration in Britain. The emergence of the charity ball in the 1980s provided a new platform for a wider society to dress to impress. More recently it is the red carpet that acts as the most important site of fashionable splendour. What the stars of a film wear to a premiere can sometimes deliver as many column inches as the film itself. The ground floor of the exhibition will feature over 30 ballgowns from the Museum’s permanent collection. Designs include gowns by Hardy Amies, Ossie Clark, Bill Gibb, Belleville Sassoon, Murray Arbeid, Bruce Oldfield and Julien MacDonald. The display will include film as well as contextual images and accessories such as elegant evening bags, gloves and shoes. Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 is part of Fashion 2012, the official fashion industry activity for the Olympic year. Created by the British Fashion Council, it is a central platform under which the industry is able to showcase and celebrate British fashion. It will provide a core focus for the industry and a schedule for the major fashion events and activities throughout London’s Olympic year.

BRITAIN’S RICHEST ARE GETTING RICHER

B

ritain’s rich are getting richer, and steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal is still the richest of them all, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. The Indian-born billionaire topped the list for the seventh successive year with an estimated fortune of £12.7bn, despite also suffering the biggest fall in wealth of any of the 1,000 men and women named. Mr Mittal and his family were worth 4.8bn less than last year, leaving them only just ahead of Uzbek metals magnate and Arsenal shareholder, Alisher Usmanov, with £12.3bn. Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich came in third with £9.5bn, down £800m on last year. The wealthiest Briton is the Duke of Westminster, in seventh place with an estimated £7.35bn, thanks to his central London property empire. The combined wealth of Britain’s 1,000 richest men and women reached a record high of more than £414bn. Rich List compiler Philip Beresford told us: “Obviously it’s very difficult in this age of austerity when the government puts out the mantra ‘we’re all in this together’ and

56 j u n e 2 0 1 2

the rich seem to be getting richer and richer.”However, I wouldn’t criticize the rich because a lot of those on this rich list are based here, they’re investing in companies here, and if they get richer hopefully the rest of us will get a bit more prosperous on the rising tide of wealth.” The Hinduja Brothers, Srichand, 76, and Gopichand, 72, returned to prominence this year, rising five places to claim the fourth spot, with an estimated fortune of £8.6bn, up an impressive £2.6bn on last year. 2012 saw a record eight lottery millionaires joining the list, led by Europe’s biggest

The Top 10:

1 - Lakshmi Mittal and family - £12.7bn 2 - Alisher Usmanov - £12.3bn 3 - Roman Abramovich - £9.5bn 4 - Sri and Gopi Hinduja - £8.6bn 5 - Leonard Blavatnik - £7.58bn 6 - Ernesto and Kirsty Bertarelli - £7.4bn 7 - The Duke of Westminster - £7.35bn 8 - David and Simon Reuben - £7.08bn 9 - John Fredriksen and family - £6.6bn 10 - Galen and George Weston (Toronto) and family - £5.9bn

lottery winners Colin and Chris Weir at number 462, with £160m. They donated £1m to the Scottish National Party, making them the country’s top political donors, ahead of Peter Cruddas, Sir Anthony Bamford and Lord Sainsbury. “This year we’ve got a record 77 billionaires, a lot of them foreign-born billionaires, based in London who like London as the centre of their particular universe,” Mr Beresford said. “ But the best examples of people who are getting prosperous and rich on the back of their own endeavours are Britons like a guy called Michael Oliver (number 243), who is in his 70s and yet runs the biggest valve-making company in Europe. He’s making enormous sums of profits and they’re generating more jobs and more tax revenue and it’s exactly what we need.” London and the southeast still dominate the list with 53% of entries, but there are now 74 Scottish entries (up from 70 last year), and 24 Welsh (the same as last year). The list’s compilers admit it is a “broad brush estimate”, based on public accounts, market intelligence, and in some cases the individuals themselves. And those behind the list report more than a slight air of one-upmanship amongst our wealthiest citizens. Mr Beresford related the story of one man who phoned his friend, also on the list to say: ‘Hello, number 21 here, am I talking to number 36?’”

An oasis for people and wildlife By Catherine Starling

ouldn’t it be great if, instead of trogging all the way out to the country for a bit of R&R, someone would bring the countryside to your doorstep instead? Well that’s exactly what the Wildfowl & Wetland Trust has done at London Wetland Centre – created a little bit of countryside close to the heart of the capital. The Centre is a tranquil oasis just 10 minutes from Hammersmith, but it could be a world way. For keen bird watchers London Wetland Centre offers the chance to see rarities such as avocets, bitterns and snipe in an urban setting. But you don’t need to be Bill Oddie to enjoy a visit. Just keep your eyes and ears open and you are likely to spot birds of prey, lapwing chicks, water voles and frogs, not to mention sand martins on CCTV feeding

Even if you’re not in ‘Springwatch’ mode, the Centre offers Londoners a space to just relax and recharge their batteries. Take a stroll along the scenic walkways that meander among the lakes, reedbeds, gardens and meadows, followed by lunch in the Water’s Edge Cafe or a cup or tea or glass of wine on the terrace. If you prefer a more handson day out London Wetland Centre runs regular activities too. For instance, during the summer months you can try out some ancient rural skills at the Traditional Craft Fair. Expert photographer Mark Carwardine is holding photography workshops and there are regular guided wildlife walks including the ever popular bat walks. Younger visitors have their own adventure play zones where they can let off steam

their young. And if you can’t tell a tufted duck from a wigeon, don’t worry because there are plenty of guides on hand to help point out what’s what. World Wetlands gives you a chance to see exotic, colourful ducks and geese from around the world up-close. In fact, this spring two of the world’s rarest geese, nenes, were born at London Wetland Centre. And a new family of everybody’s favourite wetland animal – otters - arrived at the beginning of June.

and there are always plenty of events for them to get involved in at weekends and during the holidays. Wetland arts and crafts are always popular and, of course, you can’t spend the day at the Centre without grabbing a net for a spot of pond dipping. People today may no longer be so aware of the benefits that wetlands offer but they still value them for their scenic beauty, their wildlife and as places to walk and relax.

London in Full Bloom! CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2012 HIGHLIGHTS

L ONDON EVENTS

L ONDON EVENTS

T

he Chelsea Flower show is one of the most famous flower shows in the world, put on each year by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. It is the garden design equivalent of a catwalk at a fashion show. The flower show sold out in record time this year, as the UK’s love affair with gardening shows no sign of dimming.A patriotic flavour dominated this year’s Show with Union Flags, topiary corgis and nostalgic touches in many displays Year on year, garden designers at the Chelsea Flower Show are expected to put on a novel show, and this year certainly did not disappoint. The talking points this year ...

The show gardens always dominate the media headlines, though it is often noted it is the Great Pavilion that represents true Chelsea. The skill of nurseries exhibit to such a high standard, with such attention to detail irrespective of the respective natural flowering seasons. Diarmuid Gavin set the tongues wagging again with his giant pyramid - the Westland Magical Garden won the award for most creative show garden and certainly looked the part on Press Day with Chelsea pensioners forming a guard of honour ringing each of the pyramid’s seven terraces. Celebrities were spotted at the worldfamous RHS Chelsea Flower Show decorating miniature plant pots to help raise funds for the RHS Campaign for School Gardening. Pot Art were auctioned online so that more school children have access to gardening. Pots by Alan Titchmarsh and Rachel de Thame, presenters of the BBC Chelsea Flower Show programmes, were added to the online eBay auction, and within a few hours had reached over £200 each. Ricky Gervais, Antonio Carlucci, Rob Brydon, Lorraine Pascale and Esther Rantzen to name a few, joined the Pot Art line up at the RHS show. Joan Collins, Julian Fellowes and Miranda Richardson also stopped by to see their pots showcased alongside other participants, including Dame Judi Dench, Sir Paul Smith, Pixie Lott and Fearne Cotton. The plants pots are being auctioned online to raise money for the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, which helps more than half of all British schools to get pupils growing. Ricky Gervais said: “Everyone should do something creative and I can’t think of anything better than appreciating the beauty of nature. That is why I support a campaign that encourages kids to get involved in gardening.” The RHS Campaign for School Gardening supports over half of all schools in the UK, engaging three million children, who learn about plants, gardening and the environment. The campaign has gone from strength to strength since launching less than five years ago. RHS research shows that gardening boosts children’s development, teaches life skills and makes them happier andhealthier. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh took a private tour of the Chelsea Flower Show before its public opening, She chose a lilac crepe coat and appropriately themed headwear for her 66 j u n e 2 0 1 2

visit. In celebration of the Diamond Jubilee, a new award has been created at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The Diamond Jubilee Award has been specially designed by Dartington Crystal. It is a large lead crystal presentation (or fruit) bowl with a solid crystal pedestal base. It is hand engraved with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2012 Iris images, incorporating the Diamond Jubilee celebration and RHS Chelsea Flower Show logos. The Queen presented HW Hyde & Son with the award for the best exhibit in the Great Pavilion. For this year’s show the company created its first-ever walk-through lily display, consisting of several hundred growing plants arranged in three beds. During her visit, the RHS also presented The Queen with a brooch, donated by Kristjan Eyjolfsson, an Icelandic jewellery designer and goldsmith, who uses recycled metals and ethically-sourced stones in his work. The brooch was specially designed and inspired by Iris ungicularis, the flower chosen by the RHS to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. To welcome HM The Queen when she visited the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2012, the RHS commissioned a large floral bedding scheme designed by the Parish of St Helier, Jersey. The scheme was a three dimensional tiered design created from a mixture of summer flowering and foliage plants. The centrepiece was a rotating Jersey Accession Issue Postal stamp. She also saw three floral corgis on the St Helier Jersey garden, made by Anna Brook at iapetus gallery, and the RHS has added two new Royal Autographs to its collection, one signed jointly by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, and one signed by The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

Celebrities visiting the show included Cliff Richard, Piers Morgan, Jerry Hall, Amanda Holden, Joan Collins, Ringo Starr, Michael Caine and his wife Shakira and Roger Daltrey. The award and medal winners at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2012, sponsored by M&G Investments, have been announced. Bob Sweet, Head of Shows Development of RHS Chelsea Flower Show, said: “As the world’s most famous flower show, our awards celebrate best in class gardens, designers and horticulture.” You voted in your tens of thousands - and congratulations to RHS People’s Choice award-winners the Arthritis Research UK garden (Show garden) and The Brontës’ Yorkshire Garden (Small gardens). The RHS People’s Choice Awards - the only Chelsea awards voted for by the public - is awarded to the show garden that takes the most public votes, as well as one award for the favourite small garden from the Fresh, Artisan and Generation garden categories. It was a double celebration for designer Cleve West winner of Best Show Garden for the second successive year with Brewin Dolphin. Cleve West MSGD took the highly sought-after ‘Best in Show’ Award for a spectacular topiary garden for Brewin Dolphin on Chelsea’s Main Avenue. Meanwhile TV gardener Joe Swift celebrated gold with his first show garden, the Homebase Teenage Cancer Trust garden. LIFE IN LONDON IS A BEACH The Beach is the most exciting new venue to come to London.

C

ity Beaches already grace the shores of cities like Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Cologne and New York. Residents and visitors all enjoy leisure and entertainment spaces where they can feel sand between your toes, their eyes on the water and city skyline beyond. And now London too will feature a 68 j u n e 2 0 1 2

permanent Beach location on the Thames in Greenwich. The Beach is to be Europe’s largest man-made beach and will feature entertainment and hospitality. The organisers, Peninsula Festival, plan a number of music, and cultural events on the Beach as well as exhibition sports such as Beach handball and Beach rugby. The Beach will provide

an excellent spot to chill and enjoy the Summer in London, with bars, acitvities and even dance nights. Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said: “I’m delighted that after a thousand years, London will soon have golden shores to rival even the best of the Caribbean. Greenwich Peninsula has already been transformed from an industrial hinterland into a vibrant commercial and entertainment hub, and the Beach will a magnificent addition to a fantastic series of spectaculars and events we are planning for visitors in the coming months. 2012 is a truly remarkable year for London in so many ways and we’re delighted to invite the world to sample our summer like no other .”

The organisers Peninsula Festival are transforming Greenwich Peninsula during the Olympic Games into an exciting destination with BIG screen, live coverage, a large Festival area with Live music and VIP village. “The Beach is part of our legacy from the Games” says Frank Dekker, Spokesperson for the Festival company. “We are really passionate about this part of London and believe that the site, with view over the Canary Wharf skyline and the O2, will deliver huge benefits for Greenwich, Greenwich Peninsula and the wider area”. The Beach is located on the North Western side of Greenwich Peninsula, less than 400m from North Greenwich Tube and bus station.

The Diamond Jubilee highlights

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II marked her Diamond Jubilee, celebrating 60 years on the throne, with a four-day weekend of events, between Saturday 2nd and Tuesday 5th June 2012. For only the second time in its history the UK celebrates the Diamond Jubilee of a monarch.

Let the celebrations commence....

At Windsor Castle, 21 mini cannons were fired to mark the start of the Diamond Jubilee weekend. In London The King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, fired a 41-gun salute. It followed the Major General’s Parade, which drew large crowds to Horse Guard’s Parade. After the parade 72 horses and six First World War era 13-pounder gun carriages passed along Horse Guard’s Parade for the salute. THE EPSOM DERBY

On Saturday 2nd June, The Queen marked the start of her Diamond Jubilee weekend by attending the Epsom Derby. Katherine Jenkins sang the National anthem as the Queen joined around 130,000 spectators waving Union flags and lining the Queen’s route into the stand, named in her honour, and opened by the monarch in 1992. The Queen was accompanied by two of her sons, The Earl of Wessex and the Duke of York, granddaughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Demonstrating her lifelong passion for horses, The Queen rarely misses attending the Epsom Derby. The royals were treated to an aerial display by members of the British Army’s Red Devils parachute team before the racing began. 72 j u n e 2 0 1 2

THE THAMES DIAMOND JUBILEE PAGEANT

On Sunday 3rd June, the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, saw a flotilla of tugs, steamers, pleasure cruisers, dragon boats and kayaks escort Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge on board a specially decorated royal barge, the Spirit of Chartwell. More than one million spectators lined the route. The wind and the rain had not detered millions across the UK from their street parties - and it was not going to deter Her Majesty from enjoying the pageant either. The pageant started at Albert Bridge at 2:40pm BST and ended as the last vessel completed the seven-mile route to Tower Bridge just after 6pm BST. A boat carrying eight speciallycast Jubilee bells led the water-borne procession. There were 10 musical barges, carrying choirs and orchestras. Leading the rowing boats was the million-pound row barge Gloriana, with Olympic gold medallists Sir Matthew Pinsent and Sir Steve Redgrave among its 18 rowers. A collection of small ships used to rescue stranded troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940 also

took part, led by the Motor Torpedo boat 102, the flagship of the officer who co-ordinated the evacuation. The Guinness World Records said the pageant had set a new world record for the largest parade of boats, surpassing the previous record of 327 in Bremerhaven, Germany, last year. Prince Phillip was sadly absent for Monday and Tuesday’s celebrations after being taken to hospital with an infection, we wish him a speedy recovery. THE DIAMOND JUBILEE PICNIC

It was the most regal of picnics, thousands of guests sat down to a feast in the gardens of Buckingham Palace on Monday 4th June, ahead of the star-studded concert that evening. The palace grounds were filled with ballot winners, who had won tickets to the evening show. But first they were to enjoy a sumptuous picnic filled with a menu created by celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal and the Queen’s royal chef, Mark Flanagan. Blumenthal is famous for his scientific approach to cooking, while Mr Flanagan and his team specialise in scale and catered for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding last year. Heston Blumenthal said the menu was tasted by the Royal Family, who gave their seal of approval at each stage. He said it was an honour to have been chosen. “My name is a lot more exotic than I am. British. I’m proud to be British, and I’m proud of the Royal Family. They have done so much work for the country, and that should be noted.”When you look back over the Queen’s reign, Britain has changed so much in the past 60 years. “We have come on culturally in terms of music and films, but one area that had lagged behind was food, but all that has changed in the last five years. We now have a great culinary tradition.” THE DIAMOND JUBILEE CONCERT

The show went on for the star-studded Diamond Jubilee Concert on Monday 4th June. Crowds gathered and waved their Union Jack flag on The Mall, attended by 12,000 ticket holders, with thousands more spectators lining the length of The Mall. Robbie Williams opened the concert with “Let me Entertain you”, Gary Barlow and the Commonwealth band performed the official Diamond Jubilee song “Sing”. Sir Elton John performed a number of songs and the legendary Dame Shirley Bassey sang of course, “Diamonds are Forever”. Jessie J, Sir Tom Jones, Stevie Wonder, Sir Cliff Richard all performed and singer Grace Jones hula-hooped her way through Slave To The Rhythm. Madness literally raised the roof by performing on the roof and turning the Queen’s house, into their very own terraced street thanks to some amazing visuals, to sing

some of their classic hits accompanied by the creative light show, singing ‘Our house, in the middle of One’s street’. Musician Sir Paul McCartney drew the Buckingham Palace Concert to a close. The former Beatle closed the show with a medley of hits, with a crowd participation version of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, after singing his historic song “Let it Be”. Just hours later, it emerged that he would be back in the spotlight “closing the opening” of London 2012 on 27th July. Prince Charles then made an emotional speech to ‘Your Majesty... mummy’ ‘for making us proud to be British’ and the sky was lit up by an incredible fireworks display, illuminating the Queen Victoria monument after the Diamond Jubilee concert. The Queen then laced a cut glass diamond into a wooden cradle, completing the ceremony that lit the National Beacon, the centrepiece of more than 4,000 stretching across the UK and the world. After lighting the national beacon the Queen took time to meet the stars of the show backstage. THE DIAMOND JUBILEE ROYAL PROCESSION

On Tuesday 5th June, the Diamond Jubilee celebrations continued with a Service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral. . The royal entourage arrived to cheers and flag waving, while chants of God Save

The Queen broke out spontaneously. The service was led by the Archbishop of Canterbury who praised the Queen for dedicating herself to the service of her nation and the Commonwealth. And then, after a Mansion House reception, it was time for the Carriage procession back to Buckingham Palace. There, the Queen, her eldest son and daughter-in-law, her two grandsons and granddaughter-in-law watched from the balcony as the Red Arrows flew past streaming red, white and blue smoke trails from their Hawk jets. It was a fitting end to a truly momentous occasion. The Queen has said she has been “deeply touched” by the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and has thanked everyone involved for what she called a “humbling experience”. All over the weekend, families and friends, displayed their bunting and union flags, tucked into cucumber sandwiches, pork pies and endless cake at street parties across the country celebrating the Queen’s reign. The world has been reminded that, whatever the weather, nobody does pageantry quite like Britain, and put on such a spectacular show. The celebrations will continue as we look forward to the London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics next month, and again be proud to be British. Long may it continue.

Summer series at Somerset House

WITH AMERICAN EXPRESS® 7th - 19th JULY 2012

T

his July will see the much anticipated return of one of London’s must-see events of the festival season, Summer Series at Somerset House. Set in the spectacular courtyard of one of London’s most celebrated historic buildings, Summer Series at Somerset House is a wonderfully unique event in the summer’s live music calendar. This extraordinary open air venue will be the setting for a truly exciting and eclectic array of musical talent. Australian musical cabaret superstar Tim Minchin will kick off proceedings on 7th July, paving the way for 13 nights of truly diverse programming; ranging from the slinky urban soul of Jill Scott to the chart smashing pop of dubstep breakthrough Katy B; from returning indie rock juggernauts The Enemy and The Temper Trap to the darker, more dramatic palettes of Anna Calvi and Paloma Faith. In addition, M83, fresh from the critical acclaim of their new album “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” also play a much anticipated show, as do Tindersticks, renowned purveyors of finely wrought melancholia. French chanteuse Charlotte Gainsbourg will be sharing centre stage with psychedelic pop talent Connan Mockasin and a night will be devoted entirely to Afrobeats, the vibrant and hugely thrilling strain of politically infused 80 j u n e 2 0 1 2

his year’s Barnes Fair, organised by Barnes Community association, is held on Barnes Common and around Barnes pond. Its Olympic theme is reflected from the outset, when the Grand Parade of decorated floats from local schools and community groups takes to the streets. The floats will be judged by The Mayor of Richmond. Our Olympic-themed events include a Rowing Challenge, Climbing Wall, Fitness demos, Ballet Shows and, at 2pm, the Barnes Mini Olympics. Here there will be running, tennis and hockeybased fun races for children - and if you don’t win a medal, you could always make your own, in the ongoing arts and crafts events going on in the Events Arena. There will also be a Helter Skelter, fairground attractions and, new for 2012, Robbie The Land Train. Olympic appetites are well catered for this year with barbeques, a hog roast, fish and chips, Reubens sandwiches and more - all provided by our favourite local restaurants. Sip a Pimm’s, have a picnic and enjoy live music from jazz to rock and roll and more from the bandstand. Leave time for some shopping too! This year, there over 300 stalls selling everything from vintage clothes, garden gifts to home accessories and lots more. The BCA Bookstall will have hundreds of titles to browse through - and also based in the BCA Marquee you can enter our Sporting Prize Draw. Barnes Fair takes place on Barnes Common and admittance is free. The BCA supports local charities and good causes. Supporters of London 60s Week make this possible by getting back to the basics and creating their own grass roots happenings. We are a not for profit organisation and no one gets paid, people get involved because they are passionate about the 60s and celebrating that with London’s new generation of bands, designers and fashion leaders. Summer Swimwear! MAKE A SPLASH WITH YOUR

S

hopping for swimwear is enough to bring a woman really out in a sweat. But there’s such a great range of styles, colours and flattering cover-ups available that everyone can look hot on the beach, no matter what their shape or size.

If you’re very slim:

If you have no waist and shoulders the same width as your hips, you can get away with pretty much anything bikini-wise, but make sure you go for one that makes you look feminine. Triangle bikinis look great on slim women, as do bikinis that fasten around the back of the neck (they flatter shoulders and rectangular shapes). Plus, tie bottoms look great on svelte legs. If you prefer a one-piece, go for one with geometric motifs to highlight your waist and give you shape. Choosing a simple style in an attention-grabbing colour is a good way to stand out from the crowd. 96 j u n e 2 0 1 2

If you’re full-figured:

And no waist, go for a one-piece swimsuit in a matte colour to highlight your décolleté. One-pieces camouflage little sins like tummies and flab. Balcony shapes are glam and sexy. If you go for a two-piece, avoid bikini shorts or high-cut bottoms which will weigh down your figure. Whether you’re slim or full-figured, avoid: Square décolletés and horizontal stripes, which can make you look bigger than you are. If you’ve got a boyish, triangular shape:

If you have large shoulder and slim hips, balance out your figure and make it more feminine in high-waisted short bikinis that lengthen your legs (these are also great at hiding any hint of a tummy!). They widen your hips and make you look more in proportion. If you have a small chest, try push-up plunge bras to give you a bit of oomph. One-piece costumes suit

you well, especially V-neck ones which widen your figure in the right places. Think Bond Girl! Avoid: Plain, shapeless ‘swimming’ costumes that make your figure look boyish. Low waists which highlight slim hips and wide shoulders. If you’re pear-shaped:

If you have big hips and slim shoulders, definately go for a bikini. Weigh out your bottom half with a balcony top that draws attention to your chest. Triangle tops tied behind the neck show off good shoulders, while low-waisted bottoms with little ties balance out your shape well. One-piece swimsuits highlight your waist, but they make your legs look shorter - or even heavier - than they really are. Avoid: High waists. They don’t flatter heavy hips and thighs. If you have well-proportioned curves:

If your shoulders and hips are the same width and you have a slim waist, you’re lucky enough to be able to wear pretty much any kind of swimwear. Take care with one-piece costumes, though. They have to fit perfectly: if they don’t hug your curves in the right places they flatten your shape and make you look heavier than you are. If you have little love handles, avoid tight strings that make you look like you’re squeezed into your bikini. Avoid: Bandeau tops if you’re big-busted. They only flatten out your assets! Accessorise with simple jewellery and classic sunnies for a shortcut to A-List style!

If you have a small chest, try push-up plunge bras to give you a bit of oomph. june2012

Stretch Mark Removal Using Carboxytherapy & Cellulite Removal Using VelaShape

DR. ARIEL HAUS Has Solutions To Restore Your Body This Summer

D

r Ariel Haus is an expert using Carboxytherapy and has used this procedure in his Brazilian clinic for over 10 years. In the UK Dr Haus has just unveiled treatments using Carboxytherapy specifically targeting Stretch Marks. Dr Haus’ Harley Street clinic already offers Carboxytherapy treatments combating dark under eye bags and these have proved very popular. Carboxytherapy involves the injection of a small amount of carbon dioxide gas just beneath the skin’s surface and it delivers results by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area. Carbon dioxide is produced by the body naturally, and should not be confused with the potentially fatal carbon monoxide. Carboxytherapy is a popular choice for the treatment of stretch marks on the stomach and legs. Stretch marks are often the result of the rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth or weight gain (e.g. pregnancy or rapid gain of fat). Stretch marks may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with pregnancy. A minimally-invasive treatment that is virtually painless, it can be done in around 5 minutes. Following treatment the skin texture will improve. Between 6-12 Carboxytherapy treatments are usually required for stretch marks, all spaced one week apart. This is a treatment that is suitable for all skin types and involves no downtime following the treatment. Carboxytherapy dates back to the 1930s and by using this additional carbon dioxide the body recovers from poor blood flow and in turn the body reacts by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area. Another great summer bikini season solution is VelaShape. VelaShape II combines gentle light and radio frequency energies (elōs™) with mechanical rollers and vacuum suction to manipulate the

The heat from the light and RF energies increases metabolism of this fatty layer and shrinks the size of fat cells. The mechanical rollers and vacuum suction act on the blood vessels to increase circulation to the local area,

as well as massaging the skin to achieve a smoother, less dimpled surface appearance. elaShape II offers a gradual improvement of cellulite in treated areas, firmer and tighter skin surfaces are also reported. 4-6 sessions are initially recommended over the space of just over a week. Maintenance treatments are done once a month. Treatment is safe and effective. Dr Ariel Haus is registered as a medical practitioner in Brazil, the United Kingdom and Portugal. The specific non-invasive cosmetic treatments that Dr. Haus offers are: • Skin peels to remove the effects of sun damage and also to rejuvenate the skin • Treatments to address wrinkles and frown lines • Dermal fillers (bioplasty and Restylane SUBQ) to smooth out deeper wrinkles and lines • Skin treatments, rejuvenation and hair removal using eMax laser • Body sculpting, cellulite and fat removal with Velashape, the latest technology to achieve non-surgical liposuction. In addition to his private clinic in Harley Street, London, Dr. Haus also works in the NHS and by arrangement is also able to see patients in Rio de Janeiro. Dr Ariel Haus only uses non-invasive treatments and medicines that have been approved by the relevant regulators in the U.K. In most cases, these procedures have also been approved for use in other countries in Europe and the United States.

JOHN LEWIS OXFORD J STREET BEAUTY HALL gets a multi-million pound makeover for 2012

106 j u n e 2 0 1 2

ohn Lewis Oxford Street launches revamped Beauty Hall in time for London 2012 John Lewis celebrated the relaunch of the Beauty Hall at its flagship department store in Oxford Street on 8th May, unveiling the results of a £7.8m spend ahead of London 2012. The Beauty Hall has been expanded by 40% to 19,000 sq ft to house 24 new beauty brands including Jo Malone, Topshop and Burberry; and will become one of the highest turnover beauty halls in the world. The unveiling of the Beauty Hall is the result of four months of work to the ground floor of John Lewis Oxford Street, which will culminate in the revamp of the menswear department in July - increasing in size by 2,000 sq ft to 17,000sq ft with a sleek and modern design. Brands and celebrities attended the event including Alice Temperley, Charlotte Tilbury, Lisa Butcher, Laura Bailey, Lisa Snowdon, Grace Woodward and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. Designed by gpstudio, the new Beauty Hall concept is based on the idea of a Town Square, where all the premium cosmetics brands including Chanel, Dior, Crème de la Mer and Jo

Malone are positioned like ‘houses’ around a central area focused on fragrance and niche assortments such as haircare, skincare, and nails. The revamped ground floor Beauty Hall will make John Lewis Oxford Street a major national and international beauty destination and put the department store firmly on the map with visitors who come to London this summer. Simon Fowler, managing director, John Lewis Oxford Street said: “The multimillion pound facelift of the Beauty Hall in John Lewis Oxford Street marks the first step in our preparations for the London 2012 Games and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee the month before. “The investment underscores our commitment to making John Lewis Oxford Street the must-visit destination

the new ‘Town Square for Beauty’ will also include a Jo Malone shop for those coming to the capital this summer.” Famous for its rich heritage and royal warrant status, John Lewis Oxford Street is home to some of the best British beauty brands, including Liz Earle, Miller Harris and Molton Brown as well as leading international brands and exclusive ranges. Amanda Scott, head of buying for beauty, John Lewis said: “The launch of our revamped Oxford Street Beauty Hall is a key part of our vision for beauty which is a major growth category for John Lewis. The facelift allows us to express ourselves as an authority on beauty and skincare and engage our customers in a more emotional and inspiring experience.”

Say Hello To Your Smile With Leading London Dentist

Dr. Harry Kafetzidis D

r Harry Kafetzidis, a leading Harley Street Implant & Restorative Dentist has unveiled a campaign targeting all of us who hide a smile or hold onto ‘negative smiles’. The aim is to encourage patients to not only have healthy smiles that look good and enhance confidence but also to discover options for perfecting that individual smile including: • Replacing old/unsightly fillings with materials including resins or porcelaincolour matched with the tooth in question. These would be mercury free-fillings • Tooth Whitening both AtHome or In-Surgery • Porcelain Veneers & Crowns • Aesthetic Gum Contouring

Often and sometimes without choice, mercury fillings fill mouths and these fillings tend to date back to darker dentistry days. These are not only old but unsightly when we smile. Dr Harry Kafetzidis believes that by replacing these fillings a smile is enhanced. Using products such as resins or porcelain, colour-matched with the tooth in question, patients are left with an almost invisible and definite aesthetically pleasing filling. Dr Harry Kafetzidis ensures the new materials used provide strength, durability and longevity. Tooth Whitening has taken off in the UK over the past few years and with the guidance of the right dentist that white smile is just a few steps away. Yellowing teeth are a fact of life due to aging. Food, drink and smoking cause stains that can be quickly removed by either At-Home or In-Surgery whitening. Both options enhance a natural smile. For those seeking a fast, bright, white smile with long lasting results, Dr Harry Kafetzidis recommends a combination of both 110 j u n e 2 0 1 2

At-Home & In-Surgery procedures. Porcelain veneers and crowns can last for many years. These tooth-coloured, stain resistant moldings cover the fronts of the teeth and greatly improve a smile. A natural looking smile is delivered as the high-tech materials used appear tooth-like. An attractive smile is more than just beautiful teeth but also the gum tissue

that is symmetrically draped around each tooth. The gum tissue – the gingival, acts as a frame for the teeth and if it is red and swollen or if your teeth look too short or too small because of the relationship between your teeth and gums being disproportionate, then gum contouring may be the right solution. This is a surgical, corrective procedure and one that Dr Harry Kafetzidis often performs to achieve an attractive and healthy smile. ‘Negative Smiles’ result in a person being unable to show upper front teeth or less than 1mm resulting in a perception of hidden/no upper teeth and leading to an aged facial appearance. This can be a result of nature or bad dentistry and Dr Harry Kafetzidis acts as an ‘architect’ by designing a new smile. This is not an instant process but is achievable over time resulting in a perfect smile. The above four forms of Aesthetic Dentistry are the most appropriate and best procedures to say goodbye to that ‘Negative Smile’ whilst maintaining healthy teeth. Dr Harry Kafetzidis performs all on a daily basis along with dental implants. Alongside general and preventive dentistry, Dr Harry Kafetzidis specialises in cosmetic and implant dentistry. His bespoke attention to every detail ensures all patients achieve a consistent, safe, trusted, comfortable experience and a great result. He is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the Association of Dental Implantologists UK. ‘Super’ foods are not just to be eaten; they can make you beautiful too! By Levanah ReyesWainwright

‘S

Feed your skin!

uper’ foods have long been associated with fighting free radical damage due to their high levels of antioxidants. We’ve been eating them by the bucket load in order to reap their anti-ageing benefits, and now beauty companies have harnessed theses ‘super’ foods to put in our skincare.

Coconut and Plums

Coconut contains a group of nutrients called cytokinins, which many scientists think can play a role in human health – slowing ageing and lowering the risk of cancer. A great source of nourishment for the body and the skin, it wasn’t going to be long before someone decided to add it to skincare and who better than world-renowned dermatologist to the stars Dr Perricone. His Get Super (getsuper.co.uk) range combines the power of science with the forces of nature. The Hyper Hydrator Daily Moisturiser (£29.50, Boots) with coconut water is a source of revitalising minerals and nutrients that quench thirsty skin, whilst reducing redness and relieving dryness. Encouraging our teenagers to start protecting their skin from environmental and lifestyle damage is becoming easier thanks to Elemis. New to their FreshSkin 112 j u n e 2 0 1 2

range is Super Boost Moisturising Serum (£18, SuperDrug, timetospa.co.uk) containing virgin prunus oil extracted from plums. Plums are a great anti-inflammatory fruit and contain powerful antioxidants, and this aromatic oil is rich in vitamin E. This lightly textured serum is ideal for when skin looks dull and lifeless and needs a hydrating boost, as well as protecting the skin from potential damage caused by exposure to UV light.

Apples

While all apples are good for you, Granny Smith and the Red Delicious in particular contain abundant amounts of collagen and elastin for healthy hair and skin. SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF Gel (£150 for 30ml, skinceuticals.co.uk) has caused a stir in the beauty industry for its new serum-in-a-gel technology, with SkinCeuticals revolutionising the texture of topical antioxidants. Phloretin is in the green skin of apples that stops them from turning brown, and this wonder product will effectively reduce the appearance of wrinkles, even skin tone and brighten the complexion. This superfood staple is also known for its beneficial effect on troublesome and sensitive skin. Apple Pectin contained in Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist (£46 for 100ml,

omorovicza.com) restores suppleness and provides long lasting hydration, tone and revitalise in just one spritz. It seems that the old adage ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’ really is true. Lychee and Quinoa

Lychees originated in China over 2,000 years ago and were reserved for the Emperor. The fruit was considered the most refined in the Celestial Empire and it contains high levels of vitamin C and the skin-boosting mineral potassium. Bourjois have created a super-formula with this ‘super-fruit’ with their popular Healthy Mix Serum (£10.99, Boots). This gel formula foundation available in 6 shades, also contains other super ingredients including pomegranate and goji to erase signs of fatigue, even out the complexion and revive radiance. Considered sacred by the ancient Incas, Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is a nutritional wonder packed with nourishing vitamins, minerals, proteins and essential fatty acids to combat free radicals and boost moisture levels. Cowshed Quinoa Hydrating Daily Moisturiser (£32,50ml,cowshedonline. com) is perfect for combination skin types. This lightly textured cream hydrates, softens and smoothes the skin. Almonds and Acai

Exceptionally nutritious, high in flavonoids and great at eliminating toxins, Almonds are known to improve the complexion. Restore dehydrated skin with Dr.Hauschka Almond

Body Moisturiser (£22.95, drhauschka.co.uk). Ideal for sensitive skin, this body moisturiser is infused with almond oil and marsh mallow extracts to leave skin silky-soft. Acai Berry is considered the world’s most powerful superfood and delivers optimal levels of antioxidants to the skin. Jergens® Naturals® Daily Moisturising Body Moisturiser (£4.99, Tesco) is full of nutrient rich acai and fortified with 97% natural ingredients, to promote skin health and stimulate cell turnover for a visible improvement in moisture levels. Grapes and Tomatoes

Organic Grape Water, like thermal spa water, contains trace elements of minerals, antioxidant vitamin C and rich polysaccharides (sugars) which reduce skin hyper-sensitivity and possesses ultra moisturising properties. Ultra concentrated with this magical ingredient, Caudalie’s S.O.S Thirst Quenching Serum (£29, caudalie.com) is brilliant at soothing and hydrating dehydrated sensitive skin for an extremely natural moisture surge. The humble tomato has been touted as the secret to eternal youth due to its ability to boost collagen production and neutralise free radicals that damage the body. Harness that power with Yes to Tomatoes Deep Pore Exfoliating Cleanser (£9.99, victoriahealth.com). Powerful enough to combat blackheads and breakouts, but gentle enough for daily use, this effective cleanser includes a blend of the potent antioxidant lycopene naturally found in tomatoes to protect the skin from environmental agents that can cause clogged pores. june2012

But with busy city lives it can be difficult to focus on a detox, which is why the Dolphin Square Spa in central London has unveiled unique new packages with the Lemon Detox. The overall objective is to eliminate wastes and toxins while simultaneously shedding unwanted pounds in a manageable environment. For those on the go, the first few days of any detox may prove the most challenging

Dolphin Square Spa, London Unveils Unique City Day Spa Detox Packages & Overnight City Spa Detox Packages during which time the body starts to eliminate toxins. The lack of food is substituted by detoxers enjoying either 2 or 3 spa treatments during usual meal times combined with the Lemon Detox formula. For those opting to detox whilst maintaining day-to-day activity the Day Spa packages are ideal. Detoxers start the day (breakfast) at the Dolphin Square Spa by enjoying their first Lemon Detox formula tasting and speaking with a therapist. This is then followed by a Rhassoul. Detoxers then return for what would be lunch and enjoy a bespoke massage whilst enjoying an additional Lemon Detox formula drink. To end the day (dinner), guests return for a final treatment of a prescriptive facial. Whilst it may not be possible to

get away at lunchtime, two treatments can be enjoyed instead of all three whilst the Lemon Detox formula can be consumed throughout the day as and when needed. The above package can also be spread throughout the working week specifically over three days as detoxers commence a five day or longer detox. This package is priced £114.00 per person with the Rhassoul and Massage or Facial

or £183.00 per person for all three treatments and includes a litre tin of the Lemon Detox and a book on the detox. For detoxers wishing to remain in the city but stay within close proximity to the spa, a selection of luxury serviced apartments located inside Dolphin Square adjoined to the spa are available. Here detoxers can enjoy luxury accommodation whilst embarking on a 1 night or 2 night package, with spa treatments on offer each day. The benefits of the Lemon Detox are extensive and include a Cleansed body and mind and Weight loss whilst the detox also offers users an improved complexion along with Thicker & shinier hair. The Dolphin Spa is inspired by the essence of Morocco, the spa is a fusion of ancient therapies and contemporary spa philosophies centred around four core principles; cleansing & purifying, relaxation & balance, wellness & integrated health, prescriptive maintenance & repair. Visitors to the spa can enjoy a Hammam Ritual, Rhassoul Ritual and an extensive selection of other treatments. Whether you’re working or looking to take a break, there really is no excuse to not detox in the city and get ready for summer. www.dolphinsquare.co.uk/spa www.lemondetox.com Dolphin Square, Chichester Street, London, SW1V 3LX, 020 7798 6767

Design, Build & Make

I

f you are undertaking a building project of any size there are three key factors to consider; quality, programme & budget. Naturally you as client would expect all three, the best quality design and build and for it to be finished on time and for an agreed cost. This does not seem at all unreasonable but traditionally to achieve all three is hard. The traditional relationships between client/designer, designer/builder and client/builder can become confused and grey. This can compromise quality, lead to delays and increase costs; the process becomes stressful and unenjoyable, the phrase “i’ll never do that again” springs to mind. Footprint design studio and L&D are currently working

116 j u n e 2 0 1 2

on a collaboration they are calling Design, Build, & Make the idea is to bridge these gaps. By working together with the client from the outset we offer clients a complete service. We take responsibility for everything from conception to completion. Design

Jon from footprint design studio says “the key is to talk about what you, the client, want to do”, this includes a visit to your home or site to discuss & listen to aspirations and ideas. the transition from Design to Build is smooth. The people building helped the people designing so everyone knows exactly what to build and what it will cost. Detailed construction drawings show every aspect of the project; structure, services, interior details, joinery and furniture. Make

This modern take on an age old process allows projects to be delivered to an exceptionally high standard, at great value for money and are not reliant on third parties which cause delays and often break budgets. Ayrton Bespoke Period timber windows and doors

l

ondon was the world’s largest city from 1831 to 1926 and the building boom created many of the Victorian houses Londoners live in today. However age is catching up with the beauty and charm of the many special features of these properties such as the doors and windows. That is where Ayrton Bespoke steps in. The company specialises in the accurate replication of these original windows and doors, introducing modern benefits such as double glazing and weather seals. As energy conservation becomes an ever 128 j u n e 2 0 1 2

more important requirement, homeowners can benefit from modern joinery without compromising the valuable period features of the 19th Century and indeed earlier. Replacement windows and doors substantially enhance heat retention, noise insulation and isn’t it nice to have windows that open and doors that close! It can appear to be a daunting process replacing windows and doors. In an ordered and well worked fashion the Ayrton designers conduct a full survey, discuss design and plans with the customer before manufacturing commences. Fitting is typically 8 to 10 weeks later, carried out by their in house team who ensure that there is minimum disruption to the property. The company has experience working with local authorities and understands the planning stipulations for approval of changes to windows and doors in London’s conservation areas (and listed buildings). With an increased focus on refurbishment in the house market, the company is also involved with extension work and in particular the supply and fit of bi fold doors. The company offers 10 year guarantees on all their products and with an East European manufacturing base the company offers a price pledge matching any quote on a like for like basis. All their products are on display in their Showroom in Wandsworth, open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm and Saturday mornings. 0208 877 8920 www.ayrtonbespoke.com

Moving The Earth

An increasing number of homes in the area now boast basements. So, why are residents choosing to look down when it comes to looking up?

130 j u n e 2 0 1 2

T

he local housing market has lost the buoyancy that once made selling smaller and buying bigger a wise investment. Now, a larger home is not, automatically, a guarantee of a more impressive capital gain when you resell. Add stamp duty on property transactions – 4% on properties between half and one million, 5% on million-plus homes – to agents and legal fees, and moving becomes an expensive proposition even before you’ve found the money or taken on a mortgage to pay for the extra space. Yet the need for bigger homes has not gone away. Children are still being born, people choosing to work from home and ageing parents need to be cared for. The answer to the question of how to get more space? seems to be – judging by the excavations seen on our streets – “Dig down”. With an impressive track record of basements built and 100 plus directly employed staff, Cranbrook Basements is a leader in exploiting the land beneath our feet. Now in its 25th anniversary year it has excavated, built and equipped kitchens, media rooms, storage spaces (especially for wine!), family rooms, bathrooms, libraries, gyms, granny flats, bedrooms, studies, even swimming pools. A day spent with the company, visiting sites and talking with staff and specialists, convinces you that this is a company that loves what it does, and does it very well. Providing basement space is a serious business that starts with a site visit and definition of the customer’s requirements and budget. It then moves on to planning considerations – what will and won’t be possible under local regulations, and looks at architectural and engineering solutions. Soil analysis is required and if the property adjoins another, a party wall agreement is drawn up. A study determines whether gas, electricity, water, drainage and sewerage need to be rerouted. Questions of access for spoil removal and materials delivery have to be resolved. Finally, fully costed plans and work schedules are drawn up in agreement with the homeowner before planning approval is obtained. At every stage in the pre-build process Cranbrook employs its own specialists; land, building and quantity surveyors, architects, interior designers, structural engineers and planning experts.

One specialty at Cranbrook is light. “Every prospective client,” explains Kevin O’Connor, MD, “is worried about light. They all want as much daylight as possible, as little artificial light as is necessary. In all the years we’ve been building down, we’ve used or even invented different techniques to bring natural light into basement areas and disguise electric lighting when its use can’t be avoided. And when we’ve completed a project, we’ve never had a customer who hasn’t been happy with the lighting solution; nowadays living in a basement is not like living on the Central Line. After a few days people don’t even notice that they’re living underground.” “Another common concern,” Mr O’Connor continues. “is structural security. Effectively, building a basement or extending a cellar means that a building’s foundations are under threat. It’s an area where we simply can’t take short cuts. Over the years we’ve learnt more about how London’s houses were built than anyone else. Absolutely our prime consideration is how to secure, reinforce or replace existing foundations. We’re confident that on every project we’ve undertaken, the house is more solid after our work than it was before.” When building does begin, once again Cranbrook only uses its own staff. From labourers to craftsman, the company wants things done the right way, with staff it has recruited and trained and who take pride in their work. As one client said to Kevin O’Connor “Everyone was a pleasure to deal with and you should justifiably be proud of your professionalism and skills – even our neighbours liked you!” To return to where we started – investing in property – how does building down compare with moving up? The money spent on enlarging an existing home all goes into that home, and is reflected in the price realised when the property is resold. Those who trade up by buying bigger spend capital on stamp duties and professional fees that they will never recover. And, as is often noted, moving house is the one of the most stressful thing families ever experience. Cranbrook Basements can be contacted at 0800 525 883, or visited at www.cranbrookbasements.co.uk

“W

indows are the eyes to the world so it makes sense to dress them well,” says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys. She believes that putting up a new blind, curtain or shutter can be a great start to adding or changing the style of a room. And with the promise of longer, lighter days ahead it’s important that your window dressings also make the most of the light while controlling its flow when shade is needed. “If you’re a fan of opening up your home during the warmer months and letting the light flood in then curtains are a great option, “says Sarah. And you can maintain a feeling of summer all year round by choosing fabrics in light, fresh colours. It’s a good idea to make sure the curtains reach all the way to the floor and are fully lined, this way when the cooler months arrive, you can pull them closed and keep the chill out – it may even save you a few pennies on the heating bill too. “Shutters are also steaming ahead in the style stakes, “continues Sarah. “Once all it took was the twitch of a net curtain, but now the UK’s nosey neighbours are more likely to be peering through 134 j u n e 2 0 1 2

the slats of a shutter! “With their sleek good looks and practicality they have many plus points giving privacy, light control, sound and draught proofing. And like a key piece of furniture, shutters stand the test of time as more homeowners opt to buy once and buy well rather than going for an off-the-shelf fashion fix.” Pleats are a massive trend in fashion this season and where the High Street leads, interior design invariably follows. Many pleated blind fabrics feature a solar reflective backing so the blind can reflect heat and light from the sun to help keep you cool in the summer whilst retaining heat in the chillier months. “It’s also worth noting that tab pleated blinds which have no cords or loops are completely child safe and therefore the ideal choice for a nursery or child’s bedroom.”

“For people who’d like a home aquarium, but think it’s too much work” A revealing truth about aquarium filters

Many traditional aquariums have a filter on the side or at the top, but guess what - fish waste sinks. biOrbs have a filter hidden at the bottom of the aquarium. Put simply, a biOrb filter works where there is most waste to filter. Inside the patented biOrb filter. Air driven filtration creates vigorous water flow. This maintains oxygen saturation. Circular water flow collects fish waste and traps it in the easy-to-change cartridge.

Why they’re made from acrylic, not glass

Acrylic is ten times stronger than glass. Why’s that so important? Just ask anyone who’s broken a glass aquarium and flooded their home. Did you know it’s also clearer? Acrylic has a transparency rate of 93% but glass only allows

70% of light to pass through. With a biOrb it’s been said that “it’s like watching fish in high definition”.

All you’ll need to get started is included You’ll also get step-by-step instructions to help you on your way. Just sit back and enjoy the magic of keeping fish. What’s more, every biOrb has a 12 month guarantee.

Outside In

See how, with the help of L&E (Lofts & Extensions), the Iddon family have transformed a patio and side garage into a family-oriented light filled extension.

B

athed in sunshine from a large roof light and bi-folding doors, you’d probably find it hard to imagine this bright open-plan living space as the dark, dingy patio it once was. It’s a happy home where contemporary sits comfortably alongside period features, but it’s only recently that much of this transformation has taken place. Having lived in their Victorian home in Surbiton for several years, Caroline and Andrew Iddon found themselves increasingly frustrated by its layout. “When we bought it over six years ago, we could see its potential as a family home” Caroline says, “but with two young children, we became progressively more fed up with the Victorian corridor of rooms, meaning we were constantly separated from each other. Instead, we wanted to create a space where all four of us could be together. “ Andrew drafted a two-fold design, drawing a large open space for a seamless flow from kitchen through to garden, and upstairs, a spacious dressing room with en-suite bathroom over the existing garage to the side of the building. “Next door had a large extension and so we felt confident that with a precedent set, our plans would be accepted” Caroline remembers. These big ideas with the help of an architect, became a reality when planning was granted and the couple set about finding a building team to complete the work.

140 j u n e 2 0 1 2

After inviting three building companies round to quote, the couple chose L&E. “We loved the surveyor’s energy and enthusiasm. He made it sound an easy, stress free undertaking - which surprisingly it actually was!” L&E were also able to project manage the build. “The other builders didn’t offer this and along with L&E’s competitive price, this was another deciding factor - with two young

children in tow I had no time or inclination to oversee the work” Caroline remembers. In February 2011, the builders started work. Disruption was kept to a minimum, by tackling the work from the outside in. “They built the entire shell from the outside before knocking through. By giving us advance warning we were able to prepare and moved out for a week while the worst of the

alterations took place. When we returned home, L&E had plasterboarded up both entrances to the extension so we were hardly affected by the work at all,” Caroline comments. The couple had met the foreman before the start of the project and had been given a documented schedule of work along with a related payment plan. “Andrew and I are very organised people and we liked the structured “tick list” format and payment system, meaning that during scheduled meetings, we could go through what had been completed and understand when the next phase of work would start.” While the couple were around for much of the

time, the foreman was on site daily to oversee the work. With the structural changes complete, the team were able to turn their attention to detail. Caroline and Andrew wanted to create a welcoming family space and one which would enhance rather than compromise this traditional house. By combining an enormous roof light with floor to ceiling bi-fold doors they have created a room bathed in sunlight, and with clever tiling have ensured a seamless continuity linking inside and out. L&E’s team were able to advise too. “The foreman chosen for our project is a specialist in period conversions and suggested exposing the

beautiful London Stone brickwork for that clever mixing of old and new. He also suggested we add hidden LED lighting around the edge of the ceiling - these create a subtle yet effective glow at night. “ Caroline comments. The couple sought an environment that was light, welcoming and family focused,

and in June 2011 L&E’s team moved out leaving them with just that. Now that all the hard work is finished, they are thrilled with the result. They have an elegant, light filled room where they can spend time together as a family or use for entertaining. “It changes the way we live - before we were split up at the weekends

between rooms. We pictured sitting here relaxing with the children popping in and out to the garden and that’s exactly what we now have”. Mr and Mrs Iddon are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing. june2012

New CEO Appointment ROGER MARRIS JOINS THE RITZ CLUB AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE Acknowledged industry trailblazer to spearhead the development of The Ritz Club

Roger Marris has joined The Ritz Club as Chief Executive. He brings with him over 17 years operational, commercial and business management experience. Scotsborn Marris who studied law and politics at Aberdeen University through a bursary with the British Army, and went on to be a Captain with the Black Watch (now The Royal Highland Regiment), moved into senior management in 1993 when he left the services for the commercial world. Although Roger has some exciting ideas for the Club including some subtle improvements, some things though will not change. “The Ritz Club brand will continue to be a strong, luxurious and stylish brand, and it will sit comfortably alongside our sister companies The Ritz Hotel, and Ritz, Fine Jewellery. As CEO, I intend to spend my time thinking about what our customers would expect from their ‘Ritz Club experience’.” Roger has set ambitious targets for the 146 j u n e 2 0 1 2

Although we want to consolidate our activities and focus on the home market this year; we do see continued opportunities in Europe, the Middle and Far East.” I’ve been involved in several flagship brands in my professional career, but none have been so quintessentially British on a global scale, nor the epitome of cool as the Ritz.
