The 159th Boat Race on 7th April will see oarsmen of six different nationalities competing, as the older, more internationally experienced crew from Oxford take on the younger, heavier Cambridge eight. The idea for a rowing race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge came from two friends - Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his Harrow school friend Charles Wordsworth (nephew of the poet William Wordsworth), who was at Oxford.

ACTOR FREDDIE FOX LAUNCHES

THE DEFINITIVE WHITE SHIRT

W

orld-renowned actor Freddie Fox celebrates The Definitive White Shirt in St James’s. Freddie, currently starring opposite Rupert Everett in Neil Armfield’s production of The Judas Kiss appeared in a crisp white Jermyn Street shirt with an elegant backdrop of window displays designed by the shirt makers of St James’s to celebrate the definitive white shirt. St James’s is home to the famous Jermyn Street, which boasts the highest number of world renowned shirt makers on one luxury shopping street, offering the best quality shirts worldwide. According to Richard Harvie, owner of Harvie & Hudson, “The white shirt remains the best seller in St James’s”. At Turnbull & Asser nearly half of all shirts sold, both ready to wear and bespoke, are white. Popularised by the likes of award winning films James Bond, The Great Gatsby and television series Downton Abbey, the St James’s shirt makers offer a huge variety of white shirts, in the highest quality of cloths. Every design element of the shirt including collar, cuffs, buttons, shape and fit can be created to the specification of the most discerning gentleman. The secrets to many celebrated icons’ stylish looks come from their visits to the area from all over the world to have their shirts personally crafted. A white shirt is synonymous with a message of virtue, precision and power; a bespoke white shirt from Jermyn Street can enhance and define the physique, allowing the shirt to fit all proportions perfectly, even taking into account the size of your watch. Customers often discover that after experiencing a made to measure shirt for the first time, they continue to invest in bespoke. Damien Whitmore the Director of Public Affairs and Programming, Victoria and Albert Museum says, “The white shirt represents the foundations of a man’s wardrobe

10 MARCH2013

IN ST JAMES’S, LONDON and has been for centuries. It seems like such a simple item, but the details are what make it the very epitome of style and elegance.” Each St James’s shirt maker has their own signature design, for which they are known. A shirt exhibiting a three-button cuff is a trademark look of Turnbull & Asser; a ready to wear version of this shirt costs £145. Mother of Pearl buttons complement Emma Willis’ signature look for £290. Emmett’s signature shirt, at £95, is made using Baby Twill White, a weave known for its soft texture that becomes even more supple over time. In contrast, Budd’s distinctive shirt, £115, is made of white poplin two fold cotton with a classic Budd forward collar. New & Lingwood’s signature style involves a curved collar ending in a point, allowing the collar to lay properly on the upper breast bone, and costs £95. Harvie & Hudson’s iconic shirt is the plush and luxurious white Herringbone and a white ready to wear version costs £64.50. Favourbrook’s 1850’s Victorian Morning Wing Collar Dress Shirt at £90 has an accentuated high collar and emphasised wing lapels that create a stunning effect when paired with a silk cravat. Along with the medium weight white cotton poplin, covered buttons and French-cuffs, the straight cut tailoring creates an elegant profile. Hilditch & Key’s bestseller is the Carlton with their classic collar and double cuff, made with the finest two-fold cotton poplin and real shell buttons. Royal Warrant holder Stephen Quin from Turnbull & Asser believes that “Every man should have at least three white shirts in their wardrobe”, with the best accessory to complement the white shirt being a silk tie. onhams, international auctioneers and valuers, return for their exclusive auction of Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia at RAF Museum, Hendon, this April. The aircraft hangars and historic aviation displays provide a magnificent backdrop for the auction. There will be between 60 and 70 motor cars on show, with an expectation of approximately 1,000 registered bidders. And with the viewing audience, attendance will be high. The eager bidders and audience will be made up of a wide range of collectors and classic car enthusiasts, with a huge passion for motoring in style. Rob Hubbard, Senior Specialist in the Bonhams Motor Car Department, said: “As a department we are very much looking forward to our annual sale at the RAF Museum in Hendon. It is an ideal location for a sale of collectors’ motor cars and it is always a sale that attracts a good crowd. It attracts worldwide bidding, and last year’s sale in particular recorded some very strong prices for a number of cars, particularly for those with a strong provenance or cultural significance. It has been an excellent 2013 so far for the global department, with a record sale total at our Scottsdale auction in the US in January, more than €13 million realised at our Paris auction at the Grand Palais at the start of the month, and a

fantastic $3.75 million inaugural auction at Boca Raton in Florida at the weekend. We hope to continue this success, and thus the growth of the classic car market, with our Hendon sale.” About Bonhams Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world’s largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The present company was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son & Neale. In August 2002, the company acquired Butterfields, the principal firm of auctioneers on the West Coast of America. Today, Bonhams offers more sales than any of its rivals, through two major salerooms in London: New Bond Street and Knightsbridge; and a further three in the UK regions and Scotland. Sales are also held in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Carmel, New York and Connecticut in the USA; and Germany, France, Monaco, Hong Kong and Australia. Bonhams has a worldwide network of offices and regional representatives in 25 countries offering sales advice and valuation services in 60 specialist areas. Element 29

The World’s ‘Greenest’ Vodka Launches at Selfridges Element 29 is a new British artisan vodka which offers a revolutionary refill packaging system making it the most environmentally friendly spirit currently available on the market. Made with the purest ingredients, it is named after copper, the 29th element in the periodic table, which gives the spirit its unique smoothness and distinctive character. This spring Element 29 will arrive exclusively in Selfridges with a three-tier installation featuring all sizes of Element 29 Vodka and bottles for refill. There will also be a sustainability postcard to educate customers about carbon cost of recycling versus refilling glass. Refilling bottles provides a 100% saving on the carbon cost of producing new glass and the amount of energy saved by refilling one bottle could power a 100 watt bulb for up to 11 hours. Customers will be able to drop in with their empty bottles and have them refilled with the premium spirit Element 29 or Element 29 Dark Caramel and Sea Salt, a truly innovative blend with a unique sweet and savory character.

in the Black Country. The copper draws out the very essence of the grain, developing all the spirit’s natural sweetness and delicate nuances of flavor. The copper also scrubs it of any unsavoury sulphur compounds and other trace impurities, resulting in a vodka so clear and clean that it needs no further refining. It is finally cut to bottling strength with the soft, sweet spring water that flows through the Weald of Sussex, the ancient heart of England. Element 29 is the only ‘green’ vodka currently available on the market due to its unique packaging system. The spirit is packed into ‘12 bottle refill reservoirs’ which are used to refill the distinctive frosted service bottles. This innovation reduces packaging by 95%, cutting transported weight by 45% and transported volume by 63% and completely avoids the carbon costs of producing and recycling glass. This environmentally friendly innovation also makes Element 29 extremely good value. So Go Green, Drink Element 29

An exceptionally fine spirit, Element 29 is the second drinks project from chef and food and drinks writer, Mark Douglas Hill, creator of the acclaimed Bloodshot Vodka, the ultimate Bloody Mary spirit. It has been created through combining both ancient and state of the art techniques and with the best of British natural resources.

Stockists Available exclusively at Selfridges

The production of Element 29 begins in the fertile flatlands of East Anglia where the excellent winter wheat is harvested and used as the base for the vodka. It then travels north to Manchester where it is mashed, malted and fermented to a strong malt liquor. A state-of-the-art tower still then repeatedly distills it seven times until it attains absolute purity.

The final distillation then takes place in Angela, an antique copper pot still dating from 1903 at the Langley distillery

THE BNY MELLON

2013 BOAT RACE SATURDAY 31st MARCH 2013, 4.30PM

T

he 159th Boat Race on 7th April will see oarsmen of six different nationalities competing, as the older, more internationally experienced crew from Oxford take on the younger, heavier Cambridge eight. The idea for a rowing race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge came from two friends - Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his Harrow school friend Charles Wordsworth (nephew of the poet William Wordsworth), who was at Oxford.

24 MARCH2013

On 12 March 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford and thus the tradition was born which has continued to the present day, where the loser of the previous year’s race challenges the opposition to a re-match. The first Boat Race took place at Henley-onThames in Oxfordshire and contemporary newspapers report crowds of twenty thousand travelled to watch. The race was stopped soon after the start and, following the restart, Oxford were clear winners. Cambridge wore pink, the

colour of Lady Margaret Boat Club (of St. Johns College), who their captain and two other crew members rowed for. Oxford have always worn dark blue. The event was such a resounding success that the townspeople later decided to organise a regatta of their own which duly became Henley Royal Regatta. After the first year, the early Boat Races took place at Westminster in London, but by 1845, when Westminster had become too crowded, the Boat Race moved

F E AT U R E

six miles up-stream to the then country village of Putney. In 1856 the race became an annual event (excepting only the war years). The Modern Boat Race still runs along the same lines but has now become a major international sporting occasion drawing millions of viewers from around the world. The Boat Race course is marked by three classic bends, two in favour of the Middlesex station, on the north bank of the Thames, while the third favours the crew drawn on the opposite Surrey station. In spite of these bends the course is theoretically fair - the start and finish lines are exactly parallel, and in the unlikely event of the crews staying level throughout the race, they will both have covered the magic Boat Race distance of exactly 4 miles 374 yards.

The Finish Line is just a few yards downstream from Chiswick Road bridge and here the crowds on Race Day are as densely packed as those near the Start. What those crowds witness as the crews cross the Line is the ecstasy of the victors and the despair of the losing crew. On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames from Putney to Mortlake to witness the action.

The start of the race is marked by the University stone, a few hundred yards upstream from Putney Road Bridge and for the first quarter of a mile, as the crews pass the historic boathouses of Putney Embankment.

Enjoy the festival atmosphere of the Boat Race by watching for free from one of the many vantage points along the course. You should be able to find a place to watch on either side of the river along the full length of the course, but particular areas to note are: Putney Bridge, Putney Embankment and Bishops Park (at the start); Hammersmith and Barnes (mid-course); Dukes Meadows and Chiswick Bridge (at the finish). Please do not drive to the race if you have a choice. Parking is limited and for non-residents on the day of The Boat race it is extremely hard to find. You risk listening to the race on the car radio instead of seeing it from the riverbank! There are large screens at Bishops Park, Fulham and Furnival Gardens, Hammersmith which mean you will be able to watch the whole Race before and after the crews have passed. The parks will also feature food outlets, beer stands and merchandising stalls. BBC1 will be showing the Boat Race live including build up from around 2pm, visit www.bbc.co.uk for more information For more information www.theboatrace.org

How to get there... BUS For the start in Putney, the number 14 bus from Tottenham Court Road and the 22 from Piccadilly Circus will both take you across Putney Bridge. For the middle part of the Race at the Surrey Bend, the number 9 bus from Charing Cross or the 10 from Euston and Oxford Circus or the 27 from Camden will take you to Hammersmith - close to the riverside at Chiswick Malls. For the Finish in Mortlake, take the 209 or 190 from Hammersmith. Bus routes are shown on all maps. TRAIN For the start in Putney, Putney railway station is on Putney High Street at the

Upper Richmond Road. Trains arrive from Clapham Junction, Waterloo or Victoria. West of Putney, the line divides at the next stop Barnes Station - just over a mile away - going towards Barnes Bridge where the finishing stretch begins, or towards Mortlake for the Finish. Stations are shown in all maps. LONDON UNDERGROUND For the Start, East Putney is south of the river and Putney Bridge is north Putney Bridge is the closest station. Ravenscourt Park and Hammersmith are closest to the viewing areas at Chiswick Mall. Stations are shown on all maps. Hammersmith station is accessible for wheelchairs but the Putney tube stations are not.

BRITISH BEACH POLO CHAMPIONSHIP 2013

A

s a highlight of the South Coast’s summer season, the Asahi British Beach Polo Championship will return to Sandbanks, Poole for its sixth year on the 12/13thJuly 2013. Supported by some of the best arena polo players the hotly anticipated beach festival promises more excitement and glamour both on and off the pitch. England, Ireland, Scotland (sponsored by our very own Sandbanks Life for the second consecutive year) and Wales will be competing with Ireland keen to retain the title after a gripping final against Wales last year. There is floodlit night beach polo on the Friday evening, visiting international polo teams and of course the ‘bonkers’ beach polo after parties. Arena polo is a spectacular spectator sport and played on a stunning Blue Flag beach (preferable sundrenched!) brings the very best out

28 MARCH2013

of the players and guests. The thorough bred ponies and high goal players love playing on the beach in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd. Jack Kidd who is a regular for England at the Championships says ‘I have been lucky enough to play polo all round the world – Sandbanks is still one of my favourite weekends of the year. The polo is insanely competitive, the guests are always on great form and the beach party’s well – they are simply the best!’ Whether visitors are dining in the waterfront Sandpolo Hospitality marquee, enjoying the exclusive VIP experience, soaking up the atmosphere with General Admission tickets, or just choosing to sit outside the fence on the purpose built beach viewing area it is a chance for polo and Sandbanks to show off its attributes to about 5000 seasoned and new supporters each year.

F E AT U R E

To complement the polo The Asahi British Beach Polo Championship offers a host of other activities such as ‘have a go’ polo, the Oakley Ladies Beach Volleyball, fashion shows, the charity Audi V Polo Pony race and the vibrant retail village. The polo is an excuse to dress up (or strip off for a quick swim), stay up late and indulge. Founded by Johnny Wheeler and David Heaton-Ellis the publicity for the inaugural Championships in 2008 was kick started by Piers Morgan drawing people’s attention to Sandbanks as ‘Britain’s Monte Carlo’ . Despite the onset of the recession a growing number of businesses use this ‘boutique’ event to entertain clients, reward their staff and promote their brands. Whilst sponsorship is still an important revenue stream new ideas such as camel polo (stand by for the elephants!), floodlit beach polo, equine displays and the appearance of the odd celebrity has kept people talking about the event and coming back year on year. So why does the Championships keep returning to Poole. Johnny Wheeler says ‘a cooperative council and a large stunning easily

accessible beach are the vital ingredients for us as event organisers. Some good weather, the best polo players and an enthusiastic crowd is pretty important too’. The beach polo continues to add massive value to Sandbanks and continues to go from strength to strength. After Dark Polo players and supporters have something of a reputation for letting their hair down. The polo ‘beach after parties’ at Sandbanks provides seasoned and new comers to the sport with a very cool but exciting place to relax, socialise and dance until the small hours of the morning. On the Friday evening live music will increase in tempo after the floodlit beach polo match with the most original DJs connecting with the mixed generation audience. The closing party on Saturday night brings an unmissable eclectic mix of sounds to rock the Jurassic coast. With the title sponsors Asahi beer providing a refreshing balance to the flowing champagne and excellent food to fuel the dancing it is rare to see people leave the beach before the 1am survivors photo. www.sandpolo.com

Art & Antiques

…an alternative investment

T

here is no doubt that collecting art and antiques is not a guaranteed investment, and like any other investment it had its ups and downs in the past, and of course there are no guarantees of converting small investments into big bucks. Over the last decade the art and antiques market has generally accelerated with only a few, small dips, and the market is currently looking on the up. The key to investing in art and antiques, however, is that you have to really like what you are buying, not only will it be part of the furnishings in your home, but if you want to successfully invest, you will have to learn about what you are trying to collect to make sure you spot good deals. The best way to start collecting, is to find an era or objects you particularly like and then research this further. Visit specialist museums, subscribe to art and antiques magazines, attend lectures and most importantly talk to dealers who are leaders in their field. The Chelsea Antiques Fair is the perfect place to start collecting antiques and fine art. The 38 dealers exhibiting have been carefully selected to represent the crème de la crème in their specialist field from around the UK. There will be exhibitors, who have years of expertise in areas such as furniture, glass & ceramics, fine art, but even in such specialist fields as carpets, jewellery and sculptures. Due to the boutique style set up, the dealers are always happy to part with some of their knowledge and to help setting up a collection. In addition, the March fair and The Chelsea Art Fair in April offer specialist guided tours to educate visitors. Ideal for those wanting to start collecting as well as for collectors eager to learn more.

32 MARCH2013

The key points to remember are To buy the best you can afford in the field - quality and condition are key to collecting. Make sure that you know the object’s provenance...a good story behind an object will not just make dinner conversation, but always help with a sale. It tends to be better to buy an immediately recognisable example of an artist’s work unless your aim is to start a collection just focusing on one particular artist. Top-quality items will be a better return on your investment and are least likely to depreciate in value. The beauty of collecting is that, unlike other investments, it will add some style and pedigree to your home. Sometimes you may just be looking for that one nice painting for the dining room or a special piece of furniture and that may lead to collecting additional items that will complement your first buy. Don’t forget the market is not clearly defined and much more volatile. Art and antiques’ values are very much dependent on public tastes, which change all the time, so don’t buy anything you don’t genuinely like, you may have to live with it for quite some time, should trends change for a bit. Everyone in the antiques world will agree, you have to buy objects primarily because you like them and only secondarily because they may return a profit – quick sales rarely make the desired profit. The Chelsea Antiques Fair from the 13th to 17th March 2013 (www.penman-fairs.co.uk) and The Chelsea Art Fair from the 11th to 14th April 2012 (www.chelseaartfair.org). Both fairs will take place at the Chelsea Old Town Hall.

his year Easter at Kew is all about eating; where hungry little children can nibble on chocolate, and big hungry plants can nibble on you! Don’t worry, plants prefer eating bugs, but still, they are pretty scary! Join Kew on an exciting quest to discover the history of chocolate this Easter. Children will love the arts and crafts activities including chocolate making, origami and face painting, as well the wonderful Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday. Adults meanwhile can enjoy fascinating educational talks, guided tours and a spot of retail therapy. Pick up your Time Traveller’s Map from one of the gates and take a journey through 4,000 years of history to find out how the passion for chocolate developed, from bean to bar, and learn how Kew’s scientists are working to protect this valuable treasure for the future. On route is the chocolate factory in the Munch Box at Climbers and Creepers. In the late 19th century, chocolatiers like the Cadbury family started to mass produce bars of chocolate in factories, making delicious chocolate available to everyone, not just high society. Hear from a professional chocolatier about the ingredients that go into making chocolate and join the chocolate-making workshops where you can decorate and take home your very own delicious treat. Lara Mistry, Festival Manager at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew says, “Easter at Kew is all about family fun, learning, and of course chocolate! Our trail and hands-on activities encourage children to

THE ULTIMATE LUXURY CHOCOLATE GIFT FOR EASTER What do you do if you really want something special and just can’t find it? When all you yearn for is just the best of its kind in the world - and no-one seems to have produced it; at least not to the standard you desire?

I

f you are Roy and Tracey Jones you initially scour the earth for a key ingredient and, when you have finally tracked it down, you create what you were looking for in the first place - the world’s finest luxury chocolate experience. “I wanted to buy a very special present for a very special person on a very special day - her 40th birthday,” explains Tracey. “Like me she is a chocoholic! I went to the top-end departments stores and even some of the little luxury chocolate boutiques but just could not find what I wanted. There is a lot of nice chocolate about, of course, but, I don’t know, there was always something missing. It was very frustrating and in the end I bought her something else entirely. ”That was the beginning but by no means the end of a two year journey which has reached a triumphant conclusion with the launch of ‘the Chocolate’ Roy and Tracey’s new business dedicated to producing ‘the best luxury chocolate experience in the world.’ What is it ? In its simplest form we are talking about an amazing ‘experience’. Handmade truffles using an award winning, secret recipe Italian chocolate, filled with champagne, flaked with edible 24-carat gold all enclosed within a bespoke handcrafted boutique box encrusted with more than 450 Swarovski Crystals inside and out. Also made by hand no two of these boxes will ever be the same. The chocolate itself is 63% Toscano Black sourced from a tiny artisan chocolate maker based just outside historic Pisa. The cocoa beans are refined using a traditional granite stone mill and the result has been judged by the Academy of Chocolate as officially the best in the world. What experts call the ganache - basically the mixture of cocoa, cream and a variety of other ingredients to form what consumers think of as, well, the chocolate – that forms ‘the Chocolate’ is a closely guarded secret but Roy and Tracey are happy to confirm that there are several glasses of champagne added to the normal recipe. “As we make everything ourselves we can, of course,

36 MARCH2013

produce ‘the Chocolate’ without alcohol if required,” commented Tracey. You Eat the Gold? It’s the world’s most expensive foodstuff and has been eaten for millennia. Although the Ancient Egyptians believed it gave them immortality no such claims are made for ‘the Chocolate.’ (yet). However other authorities do claim that gold has many attributes when eaten, including generating a higher IQ, managing rheumatoid arthritis, developing mystic power and contributing to a long and healthy life. More seriously it is authorised for use in food products in both Europe and the USA. High quality chocolate also has its enthusiasts. They claim that chocolate with over 60% cocoa content (‘the Chocolate’ has 63%) reduces blood pressure, decreases the chance of both diabetes and heart attack, improves the memory and even eases a persistent cough amongst a plethora of other attributes. Be that as it may the fact remains that ‘the Chocolate’ has a fantastic taste that will exceed the expectations of the wildest choccie enthusiast. And the memory of the experience will last and last. The Products Available online at www.the-chocolate.com and and seasonally at Harrods, the Boutique Box contains 15 chocolates minimum and a weight of 200 grammes (shown above). It retails at £190 including postage and packing. Delivery of this unique hand-made product is within five days or can be expressed for specific delivery date. Various box designs starting from £20 delivered. Available online and seasonally at Harrods For more information on the Chocolate visit: www.the-chocolate.com

Café Royal celebrates reopening with exclusive ‘Revival Package’ Café Royal has re-opened as a contemporary, luxury hotel marking its long-awaited return to the capital. The revival of this legendary institution has been the culmination of a four-year transformation under the direction of David Chipperfield Architects and has seen Café Royal join The Conservatorium as the second hotel of The Set.

F

eaturing 159 rooms and suites (including six historic suites), an array of dining venues, a private members club, high-tech meeting rooms and a Holistic Wellbeing Centre, Café Royal bears every trait of a 21st century luxury hotel. However, the sensitive restoration of the rooms by Donald Insall Associates, seamlessly weaving together original 1865 details with contemporary design, also pays homage to the architectural heritage of the building. It is in this meticulous fusion of the traditional and the modern – an inherent characteristic of The Set Hotels – where Café Royal finds its niche. The first phase included rooms and suites, the Ten Room, the exquisitely restored Grill and Domino Rooms, The Bar and a contemporary café – all under the direction of Executive Chef, Andrew Turner. Quick to follow, will be the rest of the building, welcoming the Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Centre, and the remaining suites of historical significance.

38 MARCH2013

To celebrate this first stage of its re-emergence on London’s social scene, Café Royal has introduced an opening package to include accommodation in a Portland or Portland Deluxe room, a bottle of chilled Taittinger Champagne in-room on arrival, late check-out and VIP Regent Street Association Membership entitling guests to discounts in local boutiques. Guests upgrading to a junior suite or above will have the additional benefit of a complimentary dinner for two with a bottle of house wine. This offer is available until 31 March 2013 and rates start from £350 (excluding taxes and breakfast). From 1st April, room rates will be £450 (excluding taxes and breakfast). The History Of Café Royal The Café Royal opened for business in 1865, since which time virtually every notable figure in London society has passed through its doors. Oscar Wilde hallucinated on absinthe in the Grill Room, mistaking a waiter stacking chairs for a man picking tulips. Shaw and Kipling, Yeats, Sickert and Whistler were patrons, as were Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor and David Bowie. The Café Royal long ago entered the literary and artistic vernacular and features in the works of D.H.Lawrence, W.Somerset Maugham, G.K. Chesterton, Arnold Bennett, Sir Beverley Baxter and Stanley Makower and portrayed by artists including Ginner, Beardsley, Sickert, Lavery, Orpen, Adrian Allinson, Donald Maxwell and Francis Marshall. Nor was the Café Royal solely the haunt of celebrities from the arts. Winston Churchill and Rufus Isaacs dined together here night after night in 1905, awaiting a call from the new Prime Minister Campbell-Bannerman. The future Kings Edward VIII and George VI lunched here regularly (the waiters’ instruction book noting: “Always plain food. No fuss.”) and Princess Diana. Throughout the long, colourful and fragmented history of the Café Royal it also has been a place where the great and the good have happily rubbed shoulders with panoply of the capital’s regulars from bookmakers, crooks, pimps and loafers to hopeful and hopeless amateurs, celebrity hunters, bankers, diplomats and eccentrics... The Café Royal was founded by Daniel Nicolas Thévenon, a former Parisian wine merchant. Thévenon fled bankruptcy in France with his wife arriving in England in 1863 with five pounds in cash. He changed his name to Daniel Nicols and opened the Café Royal on Glasshouse Street in 1865. The establishment rapidly flourished and expanded in 1870 to include its current address 68 Regent Street. If Charles Dickens’ Dictionary of London can be trusted, by the late seventies the Café Royal had an excellent reputation among those “who knew how to order their dinners.”

the Café Royal, the Marquee’s mood worsened and he left a misspelt calling card at Wilde’s club, “for Oscar Wilde posing as a somdomite.” Wilde held a council of war at the Café Royal with George Bernard Shaw and Frank Harris, and against their advice, launched the famous libel action against the Marquis of Queensbury that was to result in his eventual imprisonment.

1880 - 1923 Under Daniel Nicols’ son, another Daniel, and his cousin Eugene Delacoste, a famed sommelier, the Café Royal became famous for fine cuisine and what was reputed at the time to be the best cellar in the world. However the expense of assembling the latter almost bankrupted Nicols and led to a large portion of the cellar being sold in an auction that reputedly lasted for two weeks. By the 1890s, the Café Royal had become a place to see and be seen with the Brasserie becoming the gathering place of poets, painters, wits and eccentrics. It was here that Oscar Wilde held court night after night arguing into the small hours with, among others, Aubrey Beardsley, Frank Harris and Bernard Shaw. Other notable artistic patrons during this period included James McNeill Whistler and Max Beerbohm. John Sholto Douglas, the ninth Marquess of Queensberry, a keen boxing patron who sponsored The Queensbury Rules for boxing in the 1860’s was also a regular customer. It was the relationship between his son, Lord Alfred Douglas, (AKA “Bosie”) and Oscar Wilde that was to lead to perhaps the most notorious incidents in the history of the Café Royal. After an apparently civil meeting with Wilde at

1972 - 2008 In 1972, the Café Royal was acquired by David Locke who rapidly returned it to fashionability. Locke placed great emphasis on the vast array of wines on offer to his guests establishing an excellent cellar and a good reputation for its cuisine. In July 1973 David Bowie held a “retirement party” at the Café Royal attended by a Who’s Who of rock including Paul and Linda McCartney, Keith Moon, Lulu, Tony Curtis, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, The Goodies, Cat Stevens, Ringo and Maureen Starr, Mick and Bianca Jagger, Jeff Beck, Lou Reed, Barbra Streisand, Ryan O’Neil, Sonny Bono, Elliot Gould, Britt Ekland, Spike Milligan and Hywel Bennet. Other patrons during this period included: Margaret Thatcher, Muhammad Ali, Yul Brynner, Brigitte Bardot and Graham Greene. In December 1976, the very first Olivier Awards, then called The Society of West End Theatre Awards, were held at a ceremony at the Café Royal, once again attracting the latest theatrical stars.

1923 - 1955 In November 1922, the startling announcement was made that the Café Royal was to be pulled down and rebuilt, though in practice Sir Henry Tanner’s scheme incorporated many of the rooms from the original Nash building including both the Grill and Domino Rooms. When the Café Royal reopened in 1924, it immediately reasserted its cultural position and its central place in the social and cultural life of the capital, playing host to a plethora of important figures including Virginia Woolf, Noël Coward, Laurence Olivier, Ivor Novello, J.B. Priestley as well as Winston Churchill. Towards the end of this period, the Café Royal reinforced its long association with both gastronomy and the noble art of boxing, hosting the inaugural meeting of the Wine and Food Society in 1933 and becoming home to the National Sporting Club in 1951. 1954 - 1972 After World War II, the old Brasserie died along with bohemianism and reopened in 1951 as a very well regarded restaurant. Having passed through various hands, Charles Forte bought the Café Royal in 1954, refurbishing and extending it into an eight-storey conference and banqueting centre. The Café Royal was reputedly Lord Forte’s favourite acquisition and during this period his son Rocco, who went on to found Rocco Forte Hotels, worked as a cellar boy for two weeks, before being offered a job by one of the suppliers for twice the pay.

THE ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB F

ounded in 1897, with the aim of encouraging automobilism in Britain, today the Royal Automobile Club is a private members’ club that combines over 100 years of tradition with contemporary and luxurious facilities. Two unique clubhouses, one in the heart of London’s Pall Mall, the other Woodcote Park, a peaceful estate set within 350 acres of rolling Surrey countryside, offer a la carte dining, banqueting, accommodation, golf and sporting facilities. Membership remains at record levels of around 17,000 members in the UK and beyond with members ranging from those in their teens to those over 100 years of age. Set in the heart of St James’s, the Pall Mall clubhouse provides a welcome sanctuary away from the bustle of Central London, in which members and their guests can relax. In all its Edwardian splendour, the high ceilings, rich carpets and ornate plasterwork, as well as a fine collection of art, help create a contemporary experience set within the luxurious and comfortable surroundings of a traditional club. The clubhouse provides a fine choice of restaurants, lounges and bars with décor and menus that range from opulence to relaxed to meet every member’s requirements. In 2007 The Great Gallery restaurant enjoyed a metamorphosis with its lavish use of gold leaf, a hand-blocked wood floor inspired by Pavlovsk Palace in St. Petersburg and a series of murals by artist Catherine Lovegrove. The unused terrace beyond became a splendid topiary-filled oasis for al fresco dining and, when smoking became outlawed, the Smoking Room also underwent a transformation. Now known as the Club Room, it retains a cheerful informality as

regulars enjoy afternoon tea and play chess in an awe-inspiring interior that was described in Country Life as ‘English Palladian style at its most sumptuously architectural’. The room boasts a ceiling and frieze modelled on the old War Office that stood at 89 Pall Mall before the Club was built. Members and guests can unwind in leather armchairs, sample sandwiches or a drink, play backgammon or chess and read a daily paper or a book from the well-stocked clubhouse library. The elegant Cocktail Bar and Art Deco inspired Brooklands Room, a smaller and more informal brasserie-style restaurant, rarely have a spare table and for member functions, there are six impressive private dining and meeting rooms allowing for all kinds of events, from intimate dinners, cocktail parties and small private meetings to the very grandest receptions for up to 450 people. The exceptional sports facilities include a well-equipped gym, unique Turkish baths for male, female and mixed days, squash courts, billiards tables, treatments rooms, barbershop and hairdresser and the famous marble columned 26 metre swimming pool at the heart of the clubhouse. New to the clubhouse in 2012 was the Simms Centre, the new business centre. Situated on the second floor of the clubhouse the centre houses; 16 complimentary desks, a range of different sized meeting rooms available to hire by the hour and a large presentation suite with projection facilities and blackout screens. The centre has been named after, Frederick Simms, the motor industry pioneer and founder of the Royal Automobile Club in 1897.

Out of town members benefit from the use of its 106 en-suite rooms and full housekeeping services, including a laundry, seamstress and valet service, while the business centre and library provide the latest technology to members away from their offices. The History Of The Pall Mall Clubhouse The purpose built Pall Mall clubhouse took three years to complete. Responsible for the work were the famed architects Messrs. Mewes and Davis, who numbered the nearby Ritz amongst their achievements. Together they pioneered a steel structure as an internal framework and utilised every new scientific innovation available at the time, electric and hydraulic lifts, central heating and air conditioning, 120 telephone lines, gas flares to illuminate the front of the building and even electric lighting. Eventually opening in March 1911, at a cost of £250,000, a Vanity Fair article of the era described the clubhouse as being ‘on a scale of grandeur absolutely unparalleled anywhere.’ The Committee convened in the new clubhouse for the long-awaited opening, but half of them got lost in the vast new building and needed guides. The interiors were equally as impressive, as were the views over London, from Nelson’s Column to Buckingham Palace. Opulent French Renaissance style décor, Doric colonnades in the central vestibule and fine paintings, all added to the splendour. In total the clubhouse contained 258 rooms, including a library, photographic studio, barbers and hairdressers, bedrooms, waiting rooms, assembly rooms, committee rooms and smoking rooms. Dining has always been central, with the original Great Gallery able to accommodate up to 500 people. Unsurpassed recreation and sporting facilities have also been a constant, with card tables, a billiard-saloon, fencing, gymnasium, a rifle range and even a bowling alley. Squash courts and a Turkish Bath were also installed, but the piece de resistance was the swimming pool with its mosaic columns, white Sicilian marble walls and bronze balconies overlooking the shimmering green water. It is even rumoured that Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret learned to swim in the pool at the Club. Motoring History The Royal Automobile Club, Britain’s oldest and most influential motoring

organisation, was founded in 1897 by Frederick Richard Simms, assisted by Charles Harrington Moore, the Club’s history mirrors that of motoring itself: In 1900, Claude Johnson organised the ‘Thousand Mile Trial’, putting British motoring on the map. Three years later, the Club vigorously campaigned for the Motor Act, having long had the interests of the private motorist at heart. This Act increased speed limits and removed other restrictive legislation. In 1905 the Club became the governing body for motor sport in Britain and introduced driving certificates, a responsibility which was not to be taken over by the government for another thirty years. In 1911 the Club turnover rose to £970,000 from £385,000 the previous year, all paying 25 guineas a head to join and an annual subscription fee of 10 guineas. In 1943 Lord Mountbatten became the Club’s President. From the 1950’s to 1960’s the British car industry began to suffer from overseas competition and inefficiencies and the Club’s main rival the AA began to modernise and consolidate its service to members. Despite this the clubhouse itself continued to prosper. After Lord Mountbatten’s assassination by the IRA in 1979, Prince Michael of Kent became President of the Club. 1991 saw the formation of the RAC Foundation for Motoring. Long before that the Club, through its Public Policy Committee, had become a respected voice in the formulation of government policy on roads and motorised transport. 1999 also saw a very new era for the Club as ladies were admitted as members in their own right! Present day Overseen by the Club’s Motoring Committee, the Club continues to own and maintain a unique fleet of veteran and historic vehicles and runs a number of annual events including the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which commemorates the Emancipation Run of 1896. It is the longest running motoring event, with people coming from all over the world annually to view over 500 cars dating from before 1905. Members can participate in a range of varied motoring related events whilst the Committee continues to foster links and relationships with industry and the wider motoring world. ARMANI’S

ADMIRALTY ARCH Armani plans to convert iconic Admiralty Arch into a luxury hotel in London

T

he name is a byword for style and sophistication. And having made their name in sharp Italian tailoring, it has been revealed that Armani now plans to open a £100million luxury hotel in the heart of London.

The fashion house is close to snapping up Admiralty Arch, the majestic gatehouse leading from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace, and plans to offer rooms from December 2015. The landmark Admiralty Arch, which lies between The Mall and Trafalgar Square in memory of Queen Victoria, will now transform into a multi-million luxury hotel. The iconic hotel will house 80 to 100 guestrooms, including royal and presidential suites. It will also include a restaurant and bar for public with official Armani shops selling the luxury label’s goods Armani’s bid has not been made public, but a well-placed source has revealed the deal is at an advanced stage. It was already known that the Government has leased the landmark to developers led by Spanish entrepreneur Rafael Serrano who was behind the glitzy Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge. Mr Serrano stressed that the 100-yearold building’s period features would be painstakingly preserved. Giorgio Armani is one of the most iconic designers alive today. Armani’s involvement follows the success of its hotels in Dubai and Milan. It is looking at sleek marble fittings for between 80 to 100 44 MARCH2013

guestrooms, royal and presidential suites, with initial estimates suggesting the bedrooms will each cost £600,000 to kit out. A restaurant and bar will be open to the public. There will be shops too, selling the luxury label’s goods. It is understood Giorgio Armani himself would design every aspect of the hotel from the bespoke furnishings to the menus. A source said: ‘Armani has been looking for the ideal London base for some time, and this is the result of a long search. It is a closely guarded secret but the plans are at an advanced stage.’ The developers, a London-based consortium called Prime Investors Capital, are liaising with the Government on the security implications, due to the arch’s position overlooking Whitehall. Buckingham Palace has been consulted. The deal depends on Westminster council granting planning permission, which will take at least six months as the proposals must be scrutinised by conservation experts. Prime Investors Capital denied they had chosen an operator for the hotel. An Armani spokesman said its involvement was ‘unfounded rumours’. A Cabinet Office spokesman said: ‘The restoration project that will see Admiralty Arch turned into a publicly accessible landmark hotel is still in the early planning stage. ‘No decisions on the hotel operator have been made. Prime Investors Capital are consulting their in-house advisers on hotel operations.’

THE OTHER ART FAIR

25TH – 28TH APRIL 2013 AMBIKA P3, UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER, 35 MARYLEBONE ROAD , LONDON, NW1 5LS The Other Art Fair, London’s leading artist-led fair, is delighted to announce the details for their fourth edition in Spring 2013. It will be partnered with leading creative companies including CultureLabel, Jotta, Aesthetica and Sipsmith to name a few. The fair is unique in its approach of using a selection committee of industry experts to handpick 100 of the most exciting unrepresented artists from across the globe. Participating artists are given the opportunity to curate individual stands from which to sell their work directly to the public providing an open platform for communication between artists, buyers and art-lovers. By encouraging this direct interaction, The Other Art Fair hopes to forge lasting relationships between artists and experienced collectors and first-time buyers alike. The fair has quickly gained a reputation as one of the best locations for collectors to find undiscovered talent who are yet to gain gallery representation. The autumn 2012 fair saw a significant increase in sales as well as numerous artists being commissioned to create new works by commercial and private benefactors. In keeping with these successes The Guardian stated it was the place to “…bag a bargain” and Stylist Magazine commented it was a “… chance to pick up the work of a future Young British Artist”. The Other Art Fair selection committee for spring 2013 includes Turner Prize nominee Yinka Shonibare MBE, art critic and prize-winning journalist Laura McLean-Ferris, and international curator and dealer Mila Askarova. Indeed, since the fair’s inception in 2011 The Other Art Fair has developed from a platform for London-based artists to attracting artists worldwide with applicants from France, Italy, Japan, Brazil, Puerto Rico and beyond. Ryan Stanier comments “As this is our fourth edition of the fair, the calibre of artists is now particularly high. We are matching this standard by launching a whole new look as well as some great new features. There will be something for everyone – from ‘Kids Create’ to live bands playing in the bar. This year promises to be very exciting for both exhibitors and visitors.” The Others Live At the past three editions of The Other Art Fair, visitors have enjoyed a dynamic programme of live performance. The April fair will host an even more diverse events timetable: live acoustic sessions from London’s best unsigned musicians as well as unique presentations from contemporary performers fusing video, theatre, music and visual art. The Others Talk Following their successful talks at previous TOAF editions, Jotta will be conducting curated walks around the fair. Connecting buyer directly with artists and highlighting choice artworks, discussions will be led by Jotta and TOAF curator Dave Charlesworth. 48 MARCH2013

Photo 15 Celebrating the best fifteen unrepresented photographers from the UK and beyond, this section not only suits visitors particularly interested in the genre but also highlights the importance of photography as a medium within the fair. The Print Shop Limited edition prints will be available to buy from selected artists. All prints under £50. The Other Art Fair partner, CultureLabel, will also offer visitors the opportunity to purchase a range of these prints at their online shop. Food Stalls and Bar Eclectic pop-up food stalls offering vintage cupcakes, gin cocktails and delicious salads. Located on the balcony, this space enables visitors to enjoy the bustle of the fair below whilst relaxing with refreshments from London ’s most innovative boutique food vendors. Kids Create New for TOAF April 2013, interactive art sessions, led by exhibiting artists, allow younger visitors to unleash their creative talent – and enable parents to discover whether their child is the next Picasso. Artist Activities The Other Art Fair is dedicated to supporting emerging artists and finding additional ways of helping each artist fulfill their potential. As part of the pre-fair support package, all exhibitors are offered: Pre-Fair Workshop, Gazelli Art House: Discussions will be led by fair director Ryan Stanier, gallery founder and director, Mila Askarova, and previous TOAF exhibitors. Mentor Programme An initiative that supports both exhibiting artists and budding curators, the mentor programme is a platform for MA curatorial graduates from The Courtauld Institute of Art to give one-to-one support to individual artists, advising them on pricing, self-representation and stand organization. LYES & JONES PRESENT

ARINA I

The Theatre of One Artist

TUESDAY 16TH - SATURDAY 20TH APRIL 2013 20TH CENTURY THEATRE, 291 WESTBOURNE GROVE, LONDON, W11 2QA

n keeping with the rising popularity of Russian art in the UK and around the world, exhibitors Lyes & Jones will be providing you with the perfect opportunity to invest in one of the most exciting and credible contemporary artists. They will be showcasing the paintings of Russian born hypersurrealist ARINA at the 20th Century Theatre in Notting Hill.

Lyes & Jones’ ethos is working with credible artists who have developed their own style and identity, bringing them to a sophisticated audience who seek quality, originality and inspiration. The exhibition is designed not just for art collectors and investors, many of whom have seen strong returns on Russian art due to its growing popularity, but also for art enthusiasts who will simply enjoy hanging these works in their homes. Most recently Russian art took centre stage in London when Saatchi Gallery announced two blockbuster exhibitions, one focusing on Non-Conformist Art of the 1960s-80s and the other on art since the fall of Communism in 1990. Their aim was to raise the profile of Russian art and their success has not only been felt by the capital’s artists and galleries but has also led to a significant boost in interest from the major auctions houses. Russian-born British artist ARINA is a multi awardwinning artist who exhibits her works all over the world. Her paintings have featured at such acclaimed venues as the Saatchi Gallery in London, the Venice Arsenale in Italy and the BJ Spoke Gallery in New York. ARINA has also been included in Reinhard Fuchs’ book, “Women in Art, 520 Masterpieces of Visual Art The Great Female Artists: From The Middle Ages To The Modern Era.” At first glance, paintings by ARINA may be perceived as grand self-portraits, as her works usually depict her own face. But it is not a traditional portraiture. It is rather a theatrical performance where the painter is, in fact, an actress who uses her face to express what she aspires to convey through her paintings and then documenting this one-actor show in paints. ARINA transforms images on her canvases into poignant representations of human feelings and emotions, into magnetic, almost tangible symbols of movements of the human spirit, the human soul. Immediately recognisable, they have their own individual and unique voice in the vast choir of contemporary art. The first glance at her paintings takes your breath away. Against the background of the monochromatic minimalism there is the sudden explosion of energy,

50 MARCH2013

the passionate call to participate and be involved in the depicted image - the vividness of Red Colour! With help of the deep and powerful cadmium red ARINA generates the hypnotic whirlpools of energy that mesmerise the viewer. ‘Red colour is very meaningful to me’, says the artist, ‘in many cultures ‘red’ often symbolises passion and love, in the Tibetan philosophy red symbolises connection with the Universe. In Russian language, particularly in Russian folklore ‘red’ often means ‘beautiful’. Dostoyevsky once said ‘Beauty will save the world’ and I am convinced that images and objects created with love and faith in love can have an immense influence on physical and mental state of the beholders.’ Lyes & Jones was established in 2012 by Antonia Bowen-Jones and Tim Lyes. Their launch exhibition “State of the Art” was held at the Hoxton Arches receiving both commercial and critical success. It is their defining belief that collecting art is a long-term lifestyle passion, facilitating an involvement with innovation and creativity. Antonia has been involved in the arts world her whole life; as a student, an artist, a curator, and a gallerist. She is the founder of the legendary Bristol gallery café, The Arts House, where she showcases work from Banksy to emerging local talent. She was introduced to Tim Lyes, an international commodity trader and keen collector of contemporary art, by a London art critic in 2005 and they decided in 2012 to bring their respective skills together to create Lyes & Jones. The 20th Century Theatre, originally built in 1860, will act as the perfect canvas for the exhibition with its high ceilings and stunning arches. The walls will be decorated by the stunning paintings along with a large projection on to the stage itself, giving you a sense of the high theatre that this imposing space was intended for. Its development required many months of research, study and tests to ensure the piano retained Pleyel’s high sound quality, while delivering a unique playing experience and innovative exterior The end result features a number of unique innovations now patented – for the first time in the history of the piano the audience can see the artist play from all frontal views, showing off the pianist’s hands and creating a higher level of sound response and interaction between them and the audience The Peugeot Design Lab simultaneously develops products and brands in multiple worlds and this first project has just changed the conventions of the music world

F E AT U R E

This baby grand’s first major innovation is the lowering of the mechanics in order to align the pianos cover and keyboard. “This is one of the biggest innovations in the contemporary history of the piano” notes Cathal Loughnane, Head of the Peugeot Design Lab, who acknowledges two exceptional properties of the instrument: For the first time in the history of the piano, the audience can see the artist play from any viewing angle. This shows off the pianist’s hands and creates a higher level of interaction with the audience. Also for the first time, the pianist hears the sound of their instrument with a level of quality never previously attained. The lowered action no longer inhibits the sound projection, which consequently becomes immediate. “For the first time in my life, I truly hear the sound of the piano” reports Yves Henry, concert pianist, Professor at the Conservatoire de Paris, charged with testing the musical instrument. Working with Pleyel’s engineers, the Peugeot Design Lab has done away with the traditional piano lid prop by coming up with a selfsupporting lid mechanism that can be raised with one hand, an idea borrowed directly from a vehicle tailgate. With this component out of the way, one can freely admire the piano’s mechanism in action. The traditional three piano legs are replaced by a single cantilever leg with all the elegance of a suspension bridge. This original innovation, borrowed from the world of architecture, creates a surprising levitation effect by offering the sight of the mechanism, supposedly heavy, floating above the stage. It confers exceptional visual lightness to what is traditionally one of the heaviest instruments in the musical world.

With the same interest of not altering the performance in a concert and the lightness of the instrument, the Peugeot Design Lab team created a sheet music-stand of unequalled finesse, invisible and perfectly integrated into the piano once closed. Although the body of the piano and the soundboard are made of wood, which reacts best to sound, the lid and the leg are been made of carbon fibre with its properties of lightness and also of sound projection. Although the central frame is made of steel so that it can support the weight, the leg has also been created in carbon fibre, and filled with expanded foam to eliminate any sound box effect and best control all of the sound components. Even though the piano retains its black lacquer finish - one of the classic cues of the piano world, the Peugeot Design Lab has completely revisited the instrument by endeavouring to change all of the traditional conventions, as regards volume, ergonomics and construction. The studio created a design language that rewrites the visual conventions of what a piano should look like, suggesting dynamism, lightness and an effect of levitation. The designers then gave it a sculpture, quality and sophistication of surface taken from the world of the automobile. In this way, its soft and structured silhouette takes the appearance of the streamlined hull from a competition sailing boat. A truly sculptured surface with an aerodynamic look, the piano has a slender appearance, resolutely revolutionary. “We do not do style for the sake of style” explains Gilles Vidal, Head of Design at Peugeot, “Nothing is free in this project and the innovations we have brought have to be understood. This instrument is not a concept but a real product which involves an exchange of expertise between the design studio and its client”.

SATURDAY 27TH APRIL 2013 GROSVENOR HOUSE HOTEL, PARK LANE, LONDON W1

A

Anthony Nolan’s annual black-tie fundraising event the spectacular Daisy Ball, is now celebrating its nineteenth year. This year the ball is being held at the prestigious Great Hall at the Grosvenor House on Park Lane on Saturday 27th April 2013.

nthony Nolan is the only charity which can directly provide a cure for cancer. Every 20 minutes a child or adult in the UK will be diagnosed with a blood cancer such as leukaemia or lymphoma. Anthony Nolan use their register to match amazing individuals willing to donate their blood stem cells to people who desperately need lifesaving transplants. The dazzling Daisy Ball attracts over 750 guests to the event who enjoy a sensational evening of entertainment. The night includes a scrumptious three course meal, inspirational real life stories and a world class cabaret, with The Osmonds taking to the stage in 2012. This annual extravaganza is always supported by high profile celebrities, which last year included Andrew Strauss, Mark Ramprakash, and Dominic Holland. Guests have the opportunity to win exciting prizes in the raffle and bid on amazing unique experiences in the auction. This year these include a day’s shooting and private coaching from the World Shooting Champion, tickets to the Investec Ashes Test Series at the Kia Oval and an exclusive opportunity to drive the brand new luxury Jaguar for the weekend. You can support Anthony Nolan’s lifesaving work by taking a table at the Daisy Ball which includes: Sparkling drinks reception An opportunity to take home fabulous unique auction and raffle items Delicious three course dinner 64 MARCH2013

Superb live band Star-studded cabaret Surprise headline act Individual tickets are priced at £230 and £2760 for a table of 12. The Daisy Ball raises over £170,000 each year, enabling the charity to recruit more donors to the register and save more lives. It costs £100 to recruit each potential donor on to the register, so fundraising is a vital part of Anthony Nolan’s lifesaving work. Anthony Nolan was founded 1974 by young mother Shirley Nolan, desperately seeking to save the life of her seriously ill son Anthony. She set up the world’s first bone marrow (now known predominately as stem cell) register – since replicated in many countries worldwide the 1 millionth global transplant took place in December 2012. Despite all Shirley’s efforts, Anthony died aged seven, before a matching donor could be found for him. The charity continues in his name, drawing inspiration from his mother’s vision, courage and determination. Last year, Anthony Nolan gave a record 1272 people the chance of life. BURBERRY PRORSUM FINALE

London Fashion Week Highlights Autumn/Winter 2013 Collections A world of celebrities and famous people, beautiful and expensive clothes and general fashion glitz. The vibrant and internationally renowned London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that.

L

ondon Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. A constantly buzzing key event for those who haven’t got the patience to wait until the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into the fashion magazines. 62 catwalk shows and 20 presentations took place across the 5 days. The magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers’ and fashion stylists’ cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. The allure of the show is exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe, with international press attending from 42 countries. It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. The world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our Spring and Summer wardrobes, designers were showcasing this year’s Autumn/Winter collections during last month’s London Fashion Week. PRINGLE OF SCOTLAND The Pringle of Scotland Autumn/Winter 2013 collection offers a clean and structured silhouette, softened through the use of luxurious knits and a colour palette that builds from white, chalk, praline and caramel tones through to vivid cornflower and sea blue, with a 1960’s influence. The brand’s iconic argyle is presented in varying forms, from a more literal interpretation on a knitted dress with devore effect diamonds, to the subtle formation of pixelated prints, to the use of sharp angles that mimic the points of a diamond seen on the v neckline of a tuxedo jacket and in the rib hem detail of a cashmere knit. The twinset concept is developed through the matching of elements throughout looks; from the yarn on a knitted sweater that is mirrored in the knitted pocket panels of the trouser, to skirt and trouser suits that pair double weave fabrics, to the trimming of a knitted dress and cardigan with matching tubular knit piping. Pringle has been a favourite of the stars of stage and screen since the 1940s. in the 1950s, the original sweater girls: Jean Simmons, Margaret Lockwood, Deborah Kerr, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, and many more all wore Pringle. Pringle now

sells from London, Milan and New York showrooms, with their London flagship store in Sloane Street, Chelsea. BURBERRY PRORSUM Burberry showed its Burberry Prorsum Womenswear Autumn/Winter 2013 collection, inspired by Burberry classics, sixtiesbeauty Christine Keeler, and featuring an iconic Burberry colour palette. The show culminated in a surprise music performance that celebrated Burberry’s support of emerging British music talent. The runway opened up to reveal a stage with Tom Odell, 2013 Critics’ Choice BRIT award winner and Burberry Acoustic musician, accompanied by a choir of concert backing singers. The performance of the forthcoming single ‘Hold Me’ served as the backdrop for the show finale, concluding a British soundtrack by Paloma Faith and Burberry Acoustic musician Misty Miller. The show marked Burberry’s debut of Runway Made to Order, a service that offers custom-made outerwear and bags from the collection featuring personalised engraved nameplates. Over 1500 guests attended the show at the custom-built Burberry show venue in London’s Hyde Park, including Les Miserables director Tom Hooper, actors Kate Beckinsale, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Freida Pinto, Vicki Zhao, Melanie Laurent, Michelle Dockery, Gabriella Wilde, Alinne Moraes, Alice Braga, Olivia Palermo, Douglas Booth, Harry Treadaway, Joe Dempsie and Callum Turner. Musicians Rita Ora, Tinie Tempah, Jake Bugg, Dan Gillespie-Sells, George Craig, Harley Viera-Newton, Nil Karaibrahimgil and Misty Miller and 2012 Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton also attended. As part of the show, Burberry also introduced Burberry Nail Polish to its beauty collection, launching in stores in Autumn 2013. JASPER CONRAN Jasper Conran lit up London Fashion Week, with models sporting bold creations in navy, blue, brown, black grape, ultra violet and moss green. F E AT U R E dresses with a silk binding with a patent shoe. Geranium, Bubblegum gold, Brown and Black Organza, Chiffon and Zibeline – The dress a soft trapeze, pailettes and beaded spirals. A colour hit. PAUL SMITH Packed with rich texture and vibrant colour combinations, Paul Smith’s autumn/winter 2013 women’s collection offers a contemporary twist on sartorial classics. The collection mixes hard and soft textures contrasting soft alpaca tweeds and lambskin with silk twill and layered organza. Dark, wintry shades collide with optimistic brights and a softened silhouette with harsh lines; relaxed shoulders contrast with tailored trousers and sharply cut collars and sleeves in outerwear. Geometric prints are subtly incorporated into fabrics, bonded onto felted wool and crisp cotton, and inject a signature Paul Smith twist into linings and soft accessories. Vivid accessories mix and match with bold separates, either complementing rich hues or clashing with right tailoring. The oversized portfolio clutch is a key accessory, available in an array of colours, asis the ‘Ziggy’ bag. The ‘Base’ holdall is reinvented this season in ‘Point’ fabric, designed by Paul in collaboration with textile designers Maharam. Key shoe styles include ‘Pepper’ court shoes with an elegant pointed toe, ‘Eta’ low-cut booties with ankle straps, ‘Waters’ elongated loafers and ‘Miles’ loafer ankle boots. MATTHEW WILLIAMSON This season, Matthew Williamson imagines a TOM FORD spirited English rose seeking adventures new. It’s an idea that best translates into a unique jacquard that sets a red rose against a rich tapestry, conceived entirely in-house and which often appears further enhanced with hand embroideries, creating an almost 3D effect. Opulent colour and print is informed by the Northern Lights. This spectacular light show is depicted as digitally printed snowscapes with acid green-lit skies, and also, as long shards of neon and iridescent sequins which land on full-length column sheaths. This concept of surprise illumination continues into sequined floor-skimming evening gowns, in degrade pewter, gunmetal and sulphur yellow. Silhouettes are refreshed and now fall away from the body in favour of trapeze and tunic designs with longer hemlines. Below-the-knee skirts are knife pleated and erupt into fluted shapes inspired by the traditional dress of Nordic natives, whose eclectic costumes also inform strings of mini pompoms and jewels adorning necklines of sweaters, blanket-style dresses and coats in hyper-coloured stripe and chevron. Waffle sweaters are knitted with rabbit fur, and elsewhere, wildly colourful fox and raccoon stoles add new verve to clean line tailoring and evening wear. Autumn/Winter 2013 also sees the debut of Matthew Williamson leather handbags, a capsule collection of roomy handheld totes, and smaller duffle styles in leather and jacquard boasting longer across-body chains. HOUSE OF HOLLAND ‘Nana Rave’ House of Holland harks back to the autumn of 1989, the end of the second summer of love and the acid house scene. A field full of “like minded people” a pocket full of “treats” and they’re all up at 9 to collect their state pension. 70s graphic interior prints, jewel coloured palettes of tonal ruby, emerald and sapphire, pops of neon appear in shearling trims and floor length zips. Crystal embellishments of club night indulgence all collide in this 70s – meets – 90s nostalgic homage. Silk fil coupé, printed and embellished wool crepes, printed stretch and patent leather, and maribou embellished grey marl all come together to create a rich layering of textures. VIVIENNE WESTWOOD RED LABEL This season the collection took inspiration from mythical nature. The collection began looking at feminine prints of delicate flora and wild fauna,

looking at patterns in nature, that then lead to studying gods of nature and Greek mythology, split into 3 main areas of inspiration: ‘Pan’- in Greek Mythology is the God of Wild, shepherds and flocks, nature, hunting and rustic music, and companion to the nymphs. ‘Pan’ is the more masculine part of the collection- with oversized, boxy, loose coats and minimal clean lines in jersey and knitwear. ‘Artemis’- is the great Olympian goddess of hunting, wilderness and wild animals and is also a goddess of the nymphs. Artemis is one of the patron gods of the mythical, warlike, bow-wielding Amazons. ‘Artemis’ is the pared down feminine part of the collection that offers rounded shoulders, fitted high waists, hiplines curving outwards creating a slight 40’s silhouette, soft curved lines in tailoring with contrasting voluminous and narrow silhouettes. ‘Selene’- is the moon goddess and Pan’s greatest conquest. He wooed her by wrapping himself in a sheepskin to hide his goat form and drew her down from the sky into the forest where he seduced her. ‘Selene’ is the most sensual part of the collection, offering cape details in coats, fluid draping in tops and dresses, short jackets and bolero styles in leather and sequins, and feminine voluminous knitwear. Vivienne Westwood’s press release presented at the show is in support of the Climate Revolution: The Revolution is already begun. The fact of man-made climate change is accepted by most people. Through every walk of life people are changing their values and their behaviour. The fight is no longer between the classes or between rich and poor but between the idiots and the eco-conscious. Climate Revolution is the only means towards a sound economy. When the general public massively switches on to this fact we will win. If we want a sound economy we have to have a sound environment. What’s good for the planet is good for the economy / What’s bad for the planet is bad for the economy. How to join the revolution sign up today at http://climaterevolution.org.uk/ www.activeresistance.co.uk/getalife ISSA LONDON Rolling sandy hills, sprawling valleys, endless blue skies. The rugged home of native Navajo Indians acted as a rich source of inspiration to Issa this season. From the bold geometric designs of woven blankets to wide brushstrokes mimicking the flow of the Colorado River, Issa delivers prints as diverse as the landscape from which they originate, experimenting with fabrics and textures rich in tradition, yet re-worked to deliver a thoroughly modern finish. Woven, monochrome feather jacquards feel warm and comfortable but fashioned into pleat front trousers, circle skirt dresses and fitted jackets they’re the epitome of understated chic. Our Fit & Flare jacquard dresses have been updated with a variety of contemporary prints from skeleton, monochrome designs to striking geometric, bright angles. Silk, in all its timeless indulgence, is part of Issa’s culture and has been expertly tapered into slim-fit, printed shirts and neatly fitted or flowing, wide leg trousers to effortlessly take you from day to evening. Alternatively, the Issa woman can waft through the heat of the day in breezy silk chiffon kaftans printed with majestic eagle feathers; embroidered with plumes and beaded fringe echoing the headdresses of warrior tribes as they fan out sumptuously across the neckline. As the light fades and evening sets in she slips into one of this season’s show-stopping, embroidered evening dresses. Ultra-glamorous shapes cut from heavy crepe de chine are adorned with cut mirror and crystals to ensure she glimmers alongside the camp fire. Gliding through the crowd in a long, languid dress cut to reveal an open back, seductively long sleeves or teasingly closed neck. These are dresses to guarantee you’ll have all eyes on you. F E AT U R E JOHN ROCHA Continuing his exploration and love of colour from his Spring Summer collection, John Rocha finds inspiration in the winter bright landscapes of Wicklow and the palettes in the work of Gary Hume. As always with John’s work there is a duality – a balance between the tender and the strong. The palette, while grounded in all the textured tints of black, is bold and beautiful with meadow greens, olive and lime, candy and sugar pinks, coral, red and flame. The silhouette is crafted in rugged felts, autumn sparkled tweed, mohair, double jerseys, latex glazed lace and John’s signature silk georgettes and chiffons. Over-sized great coats envelope the body, falling from the shoulder or tucked to the waist with slender belts. Cape coats and cropped reefers feature embedded collars. Figured dresses with cropped kimono sleeves bell or skim the form. While long sleeved shifts and trouser suits create a slim, more austere silhouette. Throughout the collection surfaces are densely worked in tone on tone stitch work, looped felts, and cartwheels in hand crochet mohair, and flurries of wonderful blossoms lend an almost couture sensibility. The collection is dressed with colour bright patent shoes and over size felt clutch bags. Headdresses draped in tulle, wrap the hair adding a little beautiful whimsy. MARIA GACHVOGEL Reflection Maria Grachvogel Autumn/Winter 2013 presents extreme simplicity and modernity in cut and texture. The collection is inspired by the quiet calm of winter woodland landscapes laid bare. Through artwork prints and intricately textured fabrics, Maria Grachvogel explores the beauty of winter decay and the introspection provoked by witnessing the changing seasons. The collection expresses this reflection through the purity of carefully composed prints and tailoring, embodying nature’s cycle of birth and rebirth through the seasons. Stark bare branches printed on a fragile silk chiffon slip dress, decaying leaves cascade down tailored wool pieces or monochromatic looks with Japanese-inspired architectural folds cling to the female form with silent strength. Pared down white-onblack graphic botanical prints and their negatives evoke a photographic quality. These give way to the soft beauty of fragile change through dark hues of ashen, lichen, bone, oxblood and deep winter rivers of teal blue edged with ice and bare-branch black. The ethereal sparseness of the season is illustrated with discreet flashes of print that are revealed upon movement and the play of light and dark that give symmetry to the body through the cut of textured fabric. As a counterpoint to the mood of decomposition, the collection is infused with elements of newness, marking an evolution for Maria Grachvogel. Texture is explored through the use of innovative, technically sophisticated fabrics, adding a dimension of unique discovery and illusion. Woven jacquard, reminiscent of vintage embroidered lace, is cut into inherently modern pieces. Degradé wool weaves together black and bone and is cut to create a textured illusion that sculpts the body. Printed velvet adds richness to the Maria Grachvogel signature jumpsuit. Maria Grachvogel introduces an expanded knitwear offering and new capsule jersey collection that offer new options to form luxe, go-anywhere looks. Drapey, simple knits pair with structured, tailored pieces whilst Maria’s signature artwork print tops are shown for the first time with a skinny stretch pant. Maria Grachvogel has once again partnered with Atalanta Weller to create wedge ankle boots in artwork printed leather and glossy patent to finish the look. A softly tailored kimono cape jacket and a leather belted-waist sheepskin coat embody the pared-down simplicity of Maria Grachvogel Autumn/Winter 2013 collection. 70 MARCH2013

JULIEN MACDONALD Autumn Winter 2013 sees Julien Macdonald’s return to the catwalk to present a ready to wear collection displaying his signature styles, embodying Macdonald’s aesthetic of chic, modern glamour. Taking inspiration from the energetic, bright lights, casinos and graphic architectural aesthetic of Las Vegas, Macdonald fuses elegant style with elements of modern construction, tinged with a rock and roll edge for a fresh geometric feel. Focusing solely on dresses named after luxury Las Vegas hotels and iconic places, encompassing the high energy of the casinos, the collection showcases long, lean graphic silhouettes softened with feminine adornment as well as short dresses vibrant with pops of colour. Each dress encapsulates the atypical Macdonald woman, strong, confident and sophisticated. Luxe detailing and eccentric styling translates into expertly placed feathers, Swarovski beads and graphic sequins creating luxurious, opulent sheets of armor. The collection is highlighted with flashes of colour such as poison green, while dangerous reds, Ochre yellow and burnt orange imitate the saturated colours of a desert sunset, contrasting with shimmering metallics reflective of Las Vegas architecture. The collection is completed with Macdonald’s signature knitwear styles. New bionic stretch lace mixed with velvet yarns is seen on body-con dresses and cat suits, while other styles are infused with metallic thread and chain breaking the boundaries of stitching techniques within knitting. Launched in January of 2012, Julien Macdonald continues to offer a bespoke service to private clients made in his London atelier. OSMAN A journey to an otherworldly place, an ethereal fantasy Colours - bright winter white, icy tones of blue, smokey greys, gold & cream punctuated with deep black sheers Fabric - finely woven double faced cashmere, hand loomed brocades, bonded techno fabric, jacquard wool, crochet, karakul, lurex and wool blend, leather and lurex sheers. 2012 was an unforgettable year for our city and the serotonin is still flowing with the launch of the talentfest that is London Fashion Week. We have astonishingly creative people working in the capital, bringing energy and ideas as well as generating business. “Over just a few days Fashion Week showcases our best fashion designers, puts London’s creative industries on the front pages and brings in over £100 million of orders alone” THE MAYOR OF LONDON BORIS JOHNSON

Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors (including Canon Europe current headline sponsor for seven consecutive seasons). London Fashion Week puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. www.londonfashionweek.co.uk

BRUSH WITH AN EXPERT When a model struts her way onto the catwalk, the clothes are only half the story. Backstage, she may have been in hair and make-up for two to three hours as the beauty teams preen, polish and perfect to create the image visualised by the designer.

V

al Garland is puppeteer of her make-up team, pulling the transformation strings. A top makeup artist for 27 years and with M.A.C Cosmetics since 1994, you may not have heard her name but you’ll undoubtedly have seen her work - in magazines, on television and at international fashion weeks. It’s day three of London Fashion Week and Sunday is anything but a day of rest for Garland. She is the key artist at nine shows but today she is juggling five backstages in just one day. From late model arrivals to dealing with indecisive designers, we shadow her day.

Preen by Thornton Bregazzi Some make-up artists work quietly and seriously. Not Val Garland. After going to bed at midnight and getting up at 4.30am, Garland is the life and soul of the backstage party at the 6am ‘call-time’ for Preen while others are still rubbing the sleep from their eyes. Her temporary backstage home is made obvious by her trademark ‘Val Garland’ branded tape marking out her area. She describes the look 72 MARCH2013

for Preen as “delicate punk”, created using grey eyeshadow mixed with water to create a liquid liner, drawn in a sharp diagonal line on either the upper or lower lid. It’s modern and graphic but there were a few variations before getting to the final runway look as the designer switches from one line, to topand bottom line, before reverting back to one line. “The only way you can decide on the make-up is when you see it on the runway, under the lights,” says Garland. “I’m always there for pre-show rehearsal with the designer and stylist. We have a list of the models and I might say, ‘She’s too shiny’ or ‘I don’t like that’ or the designer says, ‘I love that’ and that’s how it works.”

shows, with the wind blowing in my hair as I take in the capital’s sights.” All of Val’s immediate crew are miked up with headsets so there’s no shouting between make-up stations. Just calm, orderly beautifying. The inspiration at Temperley is Hitchcock heroine Kim Novak, and it’s all about the eye with a bold liner. Although it’s a retro inspiration, Garland is adamant the eye shouldn’t look too Fifties. Using one of her prized possessions, an artist’s brush, she lines with fine precision using her statement glasses for close-ups. Garland dubs herself the ‘Queen of Brushes’ and estimates she has thousands in her total kit.

Vivienne Westwood

Time is tight between Preen’s finale and Garland’s 9.30am arrival for Temperley but luckily Val has a motorbike revving outside for her. “As the finale starts, I run outside, hop on the back of the bike and whizz to the next show,” she says. “It’s essential for getting to each backstage on time in traffic. “I love it because it’s a moment of relaxation between

The midday atmosphere backstage at Vivienne Westwood is frantic and highly-charged. The face chart is like the blueprint for the final look and this one resembles a Jean Cocteauinspired avant-garde painting. While some designers want to keep the focus entirely on the clothes, Vivienne Westwood’s makeup is always a masterpiece in itself. Today’s

Cheat a bouncy blow-dry with a volumising dry shampoo. Our testers try three root-lifting hair saviours: Batiste XXL Volume Dry Shampoo, £3.99 (Boots/Superdrug) This Batiste XXL has magic root-boosting powers. Applied correctly, as well as mopping up greasy roots, it adds extreme volume. The texture is slightly gritty afterwards but it’s worth it for the big hair pay-off. This One Rescues Roots & Revamps Volumising Dry Shampoo, £3.99(Superdrug) I needed to use a generous amount of This One to rescue my limp, latherloving hair. reference is ‘Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour, shot by Helmut Newton’. The creative look is achieved using bright products like M.A.C’s Pro Chromalines in red, yellow and cyan. “It’s been a sea of grey and monochromes so far this season so it’s great to see colour and have some fun,” Garland enthuses. “I love working with Vivienne Westwood because as a make-up artist it’s all about ideas and I can go in there and really open up the toybox, throw all the toys in the air and see what sticks!” The show is due to start at 2pm and two late-running models sprint in at 2.05pm but Garland isn’t fazed. Four hairdressers, two make-up artists and two nail artists on each model and they’re ready in five minutes flat.

Mary Katrantzou US Vogue editor Anna Wintour is on the front row so the pressure is on for “beautiful superskin” that complements the clothes. The late-running Westwood show means Garland doesn’t arrive until 3pm and it’s a 4pm show but her proficient team has everything in hand and Garland greets the crowd of beauty press waiting to jot the show inspiration in their notepads, Tweet the looks and take videos of make-up artists in action. As well as overseeing the final make-up looks, Garland is story-teller of the designer’s vision. “I deal with the press, ensuring journalists get what they need for the story and talk about the products we’ve used to create the look,” she explains. “I’ve worked with M.A.C for so many years, they will make me a product if I need something specific.” Katrantzou’s busy designs are all about architecture and landscapes so Garland explains she’s keeping the make-up very pure. There’s an intriguing ‘ghostliness’ to models’ faces, created with a cellophanelook gloss on eyes and by highlighting bone structure to reflect under the high beam of the catwalk lights.

Marios Schwab It’s Garland’s last show of the day and her energy hasn’t waned in the slightest. The call-time is 5.30pm and she’s flaunting a glossy manicure to beauty journalists that she’s managed to squeeze in between shows. “We’ve got a bit of a skin eruption going at Fashion Week so we’re bringing out the M.A.C Mineralize Concealer,” Garland teases, referring to the models’ skin that’s already feeling the strain of Fashion Week. She pulls out an iPhone from her Celine bag of essentials to reveal a snapshot of a beautiful medieval woman, the inspiration for the show. “It’s all about skin sculpture but in a much more modern way,” she reveals. “It’s medieval futurism!” The show time may be 8.30pm but it’s running 40 minutes late and Garland never packs up her make-up kit until the finale when the models take their final catwalk. But the show isn’t over for Garland. A quick recharge and then the action continues at Paris Fashion Week, but she shows no sign of backstage fatigue, saying: “I’m alongside make-up artists that have worked with me for years. They know what the Val-ism is - ‘Give me your magic!’”

Make-up “It feels like there’s a really big punk thing going on in London for A/ W13,” says Val Garland. “There are references for punk, skater girl and ‘really British’ with lashings of black and grey and very little colour.”

Who wants a hottie tummy? Do you have stubborn pockets of fat that just won’t disappear no matter how hard you exercise or diet? If so, the VASER Lipo may well be for you.

W

ith the likes of TOWIE’s Maria Fowler, and several other celebrities all benefiting from the amazing results of VASER Lipo, Dr Jain’s high definition body contouring practice is growing from strength to strength! VASER Lipo uses revolutionary new ultrasound technology which removes stubborn pockets of fat resistant to diet and exercise. The procedure has been hailed as ‘six pack surgery’ as it is even possible to reveal your hidden six pack with this revolutionary form of liposuction. Dr Jain will not only get you looking fit, you’ll look younger, more energetic and in one word, fantastic. You’ll want to use that new body of yours. With no hospital stay, little bruising and minimal incisions VASER Lipo is the answer. Reshape your body and invigorate your life Traditional liposuction is like sculpting with a shop vac. Everything gets sucked and chipped away without any detail. VASER 4D liposculpture is like taking a fine chisel and tapering each and every curve; every angle is perfect and muscular. Its not just liposuction. Its VASER 4D Sculpt. VASER 4D Liposculpture is a revolution to the cosmetic surgery industry. At its inception, liposuction was designed just to remove fat. Liposculpture is a whole new way of looking and designing the anatomy so that it fits you and your lifestyle like your body should. With the VASER technology, Dr Ravi Jain removes extra fat and tightens your skin around the new curves and muscles. He leaves certain deposits of fat to accentuate your muscles while removing others to create dips and valleys around them. He sculpts your body into the ultimate harmony of art and science, talent and medicine Who can have VASER 4D? The VASER 4D procedure is meant for people who are already in good

76 MARCH2013

physical shape but have trouble achieving a defined ,athletic physique. Both men & women can be treated. VASER 4D is not mean for people who are very overweight or obese. The procedure depends heavily on skin retraction to help define the anatomical results. For people who are overly heavy, the skin has stretch beyond where VASER could help it retract. Please ask Dr Ravi Jain what other cosmetic options you may have if this describes you. How does VASER work? VASER is an advanced medical ultrasound technology (VASER stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance). During surgery, the VASER probe emits sound energy that literally liquefies fat tissue before it is gently suctioned away. In traditional liposuction, the fat is just sucked away taking blood vessels, nerves and important connective tissue with it - resulting in severe pain, a longer recovery and mediocre results. With VASER, the liquid fat is easier to suction away, far gentler on the body and can be sculpted to enhance muscle appearance. Can you say “Confidence boost” ? Just imagine how you would feel without any extra fat, keeping you from your own carefree lifestyle. No more worrying about how that bikini will fit, or swimming with a T-shirt on. No more crash diets/ No more staring in the mirror, wishing you were slimmer. Areas commonly treated: Double Chin & Jowls Bingo Wings (Upper arms) Saddle Bags / Love handles Upper / lower abdomen Inner / outer thighs Dr Ravi Jain is one of a few experts in VASER high definition liposculpture in the world. I have regular pain in my breasts - what should I do? Breast pain or MASTALGIA effects 85% of women at some stage during there life. Whilst a woman is less likely to have breast cancer if she has pain than if she is pain free it is still a significant symptom in terms of impact on quality of life. WORDS PROFESSOR PHILIP J DREW, PROFESSOR & CONSULTANT BREAST SURGEON

T

hose women with breast pain report a dramatic impact on their lives including problems in relationships, at work, exercising or even simple social interactions such as hugging their children. Mastalgia There are two types of mastalgia: cyclical and non-cyclical. As its name implies cyclical mastalgia occurs a few days before a period is due. It is probably due to the engorgement of the breast tissue that occurs just before a period. This is under the control of the female reproductive hormones: oestrogen and progesterone. Towards the end of the cycle they have a

78 MARCH2013

histamine like effect on the blood vessels of the breast leading to an increase in the fluid in the breast tissue. This normally resolves once the period has started. However it can continue to varying degrees throughout the cycle becoming worse just before the period and never completely resolving. Cyclical mastalgia tends to occur in puberty or just before the menopause when the hormonal milieu is at its most unstable. Despite this it can occur at any age and may be related to external stresses that can affect the well being of the woman concerned. Non-cyclical mastalgia is unrelated to the period. This tends to occur in the post menopausal patient. A significant percentage

of patients are actually suffering from referred pain or chest related discomfort. Management Acknowledgement by the clinician that mastalgia is an important condition with significant impact on a woman’s quality of life is vital. A full history will be taken and a pain chart may be required so the woman can record the severity of the pain throughout the cycle in order to establish whether there is a pattern. The type of contraception is important with the Mirena coil as well as other hormonal contraceptives possibly playing a role. Imaging will be guided according to the results of the clinical assessment but usually involves mammogram and / or ultrasound to help exclude other causes for pain such as cysts.

H E A LT H & B E AU T Y

Treatment Cyclical Mastalgia A full range of treatments are available but it is imperative that the woman herself chooses which to take as the side effects can be worse than the pain and the woman is the only one who can decide as she is the one with the pain!

If on a hormonal contraceptive it may be worth changing this first and if perimenopausal and not on the pill it may be worth actually starting a low dose pill to regulate the hormonal situation as long as the risks are explained and the woman can make an informed choice.

Surgery is very rarely indicated and not always successful. If as a last resort it is being considered a second opinion should always be sort and also psychological counselling is mandatory.

Simple advice like reducing caffeine intake, wearing appropriate bra sizes (including perhaps a larger comfortable bra at the end of the cycle), a healthy diet and reducing external stress etc. would not be unreasonable as a starting point. There is some evidence that iodine can help so I normally advise some vitamin and mineral supplement. The evidence around gamma linoleic acid (GLA) and mastalgia is controversial. However I believe it is reasonable to try either Evening Primrose Oil or Star Flower Oil (this contains more GLA so you don’t have to take so many tablets) to give a dose of arounf 320mg of GLA a day. As it is a food supplement it can take a couple of months to work so in the mean time unless it is contra-indicated some ibuprofen or voltarol gel massaged into the painful areas of the breast twice a day may help. The massage may help reduce the congestion in addition to the pain relief in the gel. Those wishing to use more natural approach can try a Savoy cabbage leaf placed in a comfortable bra at night – there is evidence that this is as effective as the gels. If these measures do not work then the woman must decided on whether she wishes to explore more radical hormonal manipulation.

In the premenopausal woman with resistant mastalgia a trial of Zoladex injections could be used to stop her periods altogether and render her temporarily postmenopausal. Clearly this decision must be made in partnership with the patient.

Non – Cyclical Mastalgia. This type of mastalgia is much more difficult to treat as hormonal manipulation is less likely to work, especially in the postmenopausal woman – unless she is taking HRT. The basic advice remains the same and the clinician will pay particular attention to any signs of sites for referred pain or general rheumatological conditions such as fibromyagia.

Other options include the use of drugs such as Danazol. This acts like a male hormone and around 25% of women suffer side effects such as male pattern hair growth, weight gain, voice changes, aggression and increased libido. If this is unsuccessful then some women will choose a trial of Tamoxifen. This antioestrogen is not licensed for the treatment of mastalgia and although effective it has significant potential side effects which can be fatal and therefore should be fully explained.

Summary Mastlagia effects 85% of women during their lifetime. It is rarely associated with breast cancer. Cyclical mastalgia is the commonest type. It is generally self limiting and resolves without treatment. However, treatment is available although it is imperative that the woman herself decides on how far she wishes to go.

He has spent the last seven years in clinical practice in America and underwent training on the Pinpointe Foot Laser in Sacramento, California. Following his training he pioneered the Pinpointe Laser technique in South Texas where he carried out this procedure for 4 years and treated some 3,000 patients, seeing many successes over this timespan. From experience gained he acknowledges that each patient has different levels of infection, therefore the procedure is applied diligently and must afford each person a fair and measured amount of time. With this wealth of experience he is confident that with the new Pinpointe Laser technique he can restore embarrassing infected nails. Felix is dedicated to his work. He gets immense satisfaction from seeing positive results for his patients and especially takes great pride in having treated a Physician who served an ex-President of the USA & basketball stars. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour depending on the level of infection. Pictures or the nails are taken before the procedure and again when the patient returns for his or her follow up visit in 3 months’ time to show the before and after progress. The follow up visit is at no extra cost to the patient. The nails are prepared prior to applying the laser, for example debriding

the nails as appropriate. Patients can expect to experience only a warming sensation during the procedure and the patient’s comfort level is constantly monitored too. The laser will be applied over each individual nail; the beam will penetrate the infected nail bed. There are no side effects and the laser will not affect surrounding tissues. Once the procedure is complete the patient can simply go about their normal routine. All patients are asked to bring a change of socks or tights (if normally worn) to prevent re-infection of the treated nails. Felix offers extensive aftercare advice to all patients in order to prevent re-infection. The patient will notice the positive results from the new nail growth. With Spring and Summer just around the corner many people will be thinking about going on holiday so Felix suggests that now is the time to start treatment so that you can have healthy nail re-growth. BENTLEY SENSES SUCCESS WITH NEW FRAGRANCE COLLECTION Bentley is delighted to announce the launch of its first luxury fragrance range for men, which brings together the two worldrenowned brands of the master French crystal maker Lalique and the iconic British car company.

Lalique creates the first limited edition crystal flacon for Bentley fragrance collection of luxury scents for men A Unique artwork reflects dynamism of Bentley design

Lindsay Weaver, Director of Licensing at Bentley Motors, comments: “This collaboration has allowed the transposition of Bentley brand core attributes into luxury fragrance.” ‘Lalique for Bentley Crystal Edition’ “Bentley and Lalique have a similar history. Both companies were founded almost 100 years ago. Both stand for craftsmanship and tradition, but also for luxury, lifestyle and innovation. To create a fragrance together is to capture 88 MARCH2013

the essence of our skills and our vision in a bottle,” says Silvio Denz, CEO of Lalique. The collaboration between Bentley and Art & Fragrance, owner of Lalique, creates the bespoke ‘Lalique for Bentley Crystal Edition’, an impressive crystal flacon with the legendary ‘Flying B’ Bentley mascot. Finely wrought in gleaming crystal, the dynamic styling of its wings epitomises timeless beauty.

Daniele Ceccomori, Bentley Designer, says: “The crystal edition is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, reflecting the unrivalled luxury and elegant values of both Bentley and Lalique. Just as the ‘Flying B’ sits gracefully on the front of our flagship Mulsanne model, we wanted to communicate the

same importance with the preciousness of the crystal artwork and the uniqueness of the essence treasured by its delicate flacon”. The eau de parfum itself, composed by Mylène Alran, from the French perfume house Robertet, is a fitting elixir of fine woody notes and exquisite leather to complement the epicentres of excellence within Bentley’s craftsmanship. Further, precious orris butter accord enriches the scent to create a sensual and charismatic character. The ‘Lalique for Bentley Crystal Edition’ showcases the finest glassmaking expertise and is limited to only 999 pieces, available at a number of carefully selected retailers from April 2013. ‘Bentley for Men’ and ‘Intense’ range The ‘Bentley for Men’ and the high-impact ‘Bentley for Men Intense’ fragrances are created by top French perfumer Nathalie Lorson, from the perfume house Firmenich. She has skilfully transformed the quintessence of the luxury automotive brand Bentley into a superb and unmistakeable fragrance experience. To do so, the finest perfume raw ingredients have been used, including those must-haves for Bentley’s debut fragrance, fine wood and leather notes. “I chose cedar because of its powerful unadulterated scent and patchouli for its sensual depth and natural elegance,” explains Nathalie.

The ‘Intense’ version will take these notes to another level by infusing the rich scent with aromatic African geranium. The bottle design echoes the luxury of the cars with an elegant symmetrical shape, striking appeal and a knurled ring around the top. Both captivating Bentley fragrances will be available at selected perfumeries and department stores from April 2013.

ARE YOU SLEEPING ON THE RIGHT BED?

T

he right bed is extremely important to our health and wellbeing because our sleeping environment will affect the quality of our sleep – which in turn has a big effect on how well we feel, both physically and psychologically. A bed with the correct support, comfort and space will ensure you wake less, move about less, are less disturbed by your partner and are less likely to wake up feeling tired or aching. So, what is the right bed? It’s not easy to make specific recommendations. There’s such a huge choice on the market place and the key deciding factor – is it comfortable – is such a subjective measure. “All we can do is give people an overview of the different types of bed available and tips on how to go about the process of choosing the right bed for them,” explains Sleep Council spokesperson Jessica Alexander. The Sleep Council was set up to provide an independent source of advice on bed buying – as well as to raise awareness of the importance of getting a good night’s sleep to health and wellbeing. According to The Sleep Council, Goldilocks had the right idea: the right bed’s neither too soft nor too hard – but it suits everyone’s very individual needs. First and foremost it must give you correct support and comfort – but individuals might also have to consider factors such as back pain, allergies, breathing problems, available budget, whether a type of mattress makes you too hot, storage or space requirements: not to mention style preferences. Size is important. The most common British double bed size of 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in (135cm x 190cm) really isn’t big enough for two to sleep well without disturbing each other: studies have shown that more space – even a slight move up to a 5ft x 6ft 6in (150cm x 200cm) King size bed – can make a lot of difference to night-time comfort. Always consider both the mattress and its support, whether divan base or

118 MARCH2013

bedstead. They work together to create the overall feel and performance of a bed, with different combinations producing differing results. If you are not buying a base and mattress from the same supplier, make sure the mattress is suitable for use with the type of support you are considering: if you don’t, lack of durability could be a problem, with no comeback to the supplier. There are many types – and prices of beds – from which to choose, each offering their own features and benefits. Mattresses come with various types of internal spring unit – open coil, pocket sprung or continuous springing – in ordinary foam, visco-elastic or latex foam, filled with cotton or other fibres (futons!). You should spend as much as you can afford on a new bed – it’s probably one of the most important investments you’ll make, not just for your home but also for your own wellbeing! Remember, every £100 you spend represents just 2.7p a night over 10 years. Once you’ve got your new bed, do remember that it won’t stay wonderful forever – beds get a lot of wear and tear! Over time, your comfort and support needs change, too. Do the Bed MOT test once a year – National Bed Month, which runs throughout March, is a good time to consider the state of your bed and your sleep and comfort quality. Visit www.sleepcouncil.com to take the Bed MOT, New Bed Profile, reach bed-buying and sleep tips, and watch videos that help people sleep better or select the right bed for them. The Sleep Council is a generic organisation which seeks to promote the importance of a good night’s sleep to health and wellbeing and the advantages associated with a comfortable bed, regularly replaced. In addition to advice on how to get a good night’s sleep, the Sleep Council provides tips on choosing the right bed. The Sleep Council is funded by the bed industry.

Lamborghini aventaDor roaDster LP700-4 The latest set of wheels are taken for a spin. This week: Lamborghini Aventador Roadster LP700-4

C

an you ever have too much of a good thing? There are those who seem pretty confident that there is no such thing as too much. How else could you explain the existence of the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster LP700-4; even the name is longer than the Coupé on which it is based. The burning enthusiasm that rages down in Sant’Agata has resulted in a drop-top version of its incredible supercar, which gives you more of pretty much everything.

6.5-litre V12 engine that debuted in the fixed-roof version, pumping out a spectacular 691bhp. The roof system also helps keep the weight down; with that plus a little body strengthening the Roadster is a mere 50kg heavier, and as a result it can post 3.0 seconds for the 0-62mph sprint and bash past the 200mph mark. Lamborghini claims that the Roadster posts exactly the same lap times around its test circuit as the Coupé, so you can sleep safe in the knowledge you’ve not compromised yourself around the racetrack in the name of open-air fun.

There’s the looks for starters. The Aventador Coupé is hardly a wallflower, but the Roadster has a few tricks of its own. For starters it has to accommodate some sort of roof mechanism, so at the back where there is normally a slated window there are two hexagonal windows into the engine bay. The roof itself comes in two pieces of carbonfibre, and although at launch they’re coloured matte black other colour options will be available later. To remove them you have to tilt the seat forward, release a catch, pull the panel out of position and stash it in the boot at the front. You could argue that’s a bit of a faff (and you’d be right) but the alternative would compromise the car’s looks, and a fabric roof would not handle 217mph.

Unusually for a supercar drive, Lamborghini let us loose around a circuit first before trying the Aventador on the road but it gave us the opportunity to savour the performance in full flow. Idling down the pit lane it’s hard not to be a little intimidated given the huge amount of power and the whopping price tag, but after only a few corners it’s clear to see that it is actually a remarkably friendly device. There’s four-wheel drive spinning away beneath you to keep the power in check, and the Sport and Corse modes (selectable on the centre console) not only alter the operation of the ESP and the gearbox but also the power split between front and rear.

Yes, the Aventador Roadster is not a fraction slower than its Coupé counterpart. Under those little windows there is the same satanical

Select the most aggressive Corse mode and the Aventador feels pinned to the track, and allows you to get on the power early out of

the bends and simply rocket down the straights. Even in the tighter bends where the weight should count against it the Aventador feels surprisingly nimble too; the steering is packed with feel and the carbonfibre brakes remain strong lap after lap, even slowing down from over 150mph. Switch to the Sport mode and there’s an increased power bias to the rear (90% as opposed to 80%) which makes the tail a little more happy to swing, but even then it is far less demanding to drive than you might imagine. And all the while the glorious V12 is wailing away behind your head, and with the roof up you can still lower the little rear window to allow the incredible sounds to flow more easily into the cabin. After the track came the road drive, and a quick look at the map revealed just why; Miami may be the playground of the rich and famous but it doesn’t have a twisty road for miles in every direction. However a cruise along Ocean Drive revealed the other reason why you’d want to buy one; people love this car. Some other rival marques might not enjoy the same universal approval that the Aventador got, thanks to its sheer outlandishness. The maximum possible speed on Ocean Drive is about 15mph, but the crowd along the street waved, applauded, wanted their picture taken with it and were calling out for us to rev the engine. One guy raced out into the middle of the road

and offered us a free lunch if we parked the Aventador outside his restaurant; that’s the kind of response it provokes. And that’s exactly why you’d buy one. At almost £300,000 it won’t be your only car and if you have that much to spend you’re unlikely to be much of a wallflower yourself. Its rivals seem a bit plain and straightforward in comparison - this is a proper, outlandish, cartoonlike Lamborghini supercar that can still do the boring stuff too.
